- 0:31SPEAKER_01: At SoFi Stadium.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: There is no time for pre-podcast banter.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: We did not even exchange one word before hitting record.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Bills 37, Rams 34.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Overtime.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Josh Allen.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: There were struggles through the air.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Pushing the ball down the field.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: He discussed his mechanical issues after the game.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: There were penalties.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: There were penalties.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: They were feeling the loss of DJ Moore.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: He was off.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, there were guys open that he couldn't hit.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: And then Harrison Beavis has his kick in overtime blocked.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: And you just see the reaction from Josh Allen on the sideline.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: It's go time.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: It's Liam Neeson and Taken.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: Or maybe he just wanted to go kick somebody's ass in the parking lot
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: for not returning a shopping cart.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: The look in his eye is a look that you don't see often.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: And that's why Josh Allen is different.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: He just took over the game.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: The Bills win.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: There was a lot of good.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: There was a lot of bad.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Gut reaction to an instant classic, Monday Night Football.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, gut reaction is that's when we talk about, let's just talk about quarterbacks.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, all we do is talk about quarterbacks.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: That's the game.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Just watch that game.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: That's your every flavor of quarterback that you want was playing last night.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Whether it was high level toughness, instincts, accuracy, arm strength, athleticism, legs.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: You saw every form of quarterback play last night at its highest level.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Gets no better for me.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Entertainment value through the roof.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Football value we're going to get into.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot to unpack.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: This Rams team is not done by any means.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: As you know, football is a long season and we'll get into this.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: But this is Josh Allen's signature moment again.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, maybe he's had some before.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: I feel like a Monday night football regular season type game
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: against this quote unquote Rams team this year.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: To do that, that was like Josh Allen.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: That's the old tennis.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Who has the serve?
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: The basketball, Durant versus LeBron.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: You know, who gets the ball?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Who can't stop each other?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: That type of.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: High level.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Nobody can stop each other.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: When it's playing at that highest level, it's that good.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: You just got the sense he wasn't going to be denied.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: It was all guts.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: All heart.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: It wasn't pretty, but that's why Josh Allen is Josh Allen.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Tyler, I had a thought with Josh Allen, too.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: It was almost like peewee football.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Take you back to when the biggest,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: fastest kid, you just put him at quarterback, snap the ball, go run.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: There it is.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Joe Brady, hey, things weren't working down the field.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: We don't have our number one wide out.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Nothing's clicking.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Josh, this is why we haven't had to do this all the time,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: but we're going to snap the ball to you and just run.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Like it.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Whatever it takes to win, do it on the road.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: It's so impressive.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Let's get into it.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Here's what I want your take on right now.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Where are you at with – well, a lot to unpack here.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Couple questions.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: We got to get into the running back, Cook.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I want to get into the defense.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: But where were you at with Joe Brady right now, head coach-wise?
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there is a lot to unpack.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: where I think Joe Brady had
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: some clock management debates will be had this morning
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: on that clock management.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: I want to get your take as well.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Joe Brady, James Cook, the defense,
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Greg Russo.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: I want to get to all that.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Let's stay on Josh Allen for a moment because you're right.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: That's the headline here.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: He's going back and forth with Matthew Stafford,
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: two different styles,
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: two different ways of decimating your defense on this particular night.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: And I was just trying to pull it up here because watching Josh Allen take over
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: with his legs, it brought me back to a couple of quotes.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: One from A teammate,
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: a friend of his,
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: a longtime Bill will just say,
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: this was in that three-parter a few years ago, quote,
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: he wants to run through your face and establish the fact that he's
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: the biggest alpha male dog quarterback in the history of pro football.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And then there was another quote.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Let me see if I can find it here.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Because it just, this is the essence of Josh Allen.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Quote like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: This ain't Tom Brady.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: This is a freaking 10-year-old kid who just wants to have fun.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: And by the way, that's pretty cool for the Buffalo Bills quarterback.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: The guy freaking makes him happy.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Just let him be him.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: It's bananas.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Here we are.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Coach is leaving a Super Bowl team for lateral moves.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: So that was, you know, back to the strife there with the coach and the quarterback.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: You just saw it uninhibited Josh Allen.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Throwing the team on his back.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: He gave him a sliver of daylight.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And Nate Landman was an animal in this game, right?
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Punching at the ball constantly forces the huge fumble on James Cook.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Incredible.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: That's a take of yours that has aged very gracefully,
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: as I texted you, like the finest wine in all of France.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: But Nate Landman is right there.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: It's one-on-one.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Josh Allen makes a miss, right?
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: He gets to the corner.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: He's off.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: The very next play.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: It's a designed boot to the left,
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: and Aaron Donald looks like somebody that's been retired for a while.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: By the way, I know he had a sack.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: It was called back.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: He only had two tackles.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: He was mostly a non-factor in this game.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: This is the essence of Allen,
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: and this is exactly the kind of quarterbacking that he promised he would bring,
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: right?
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: And you go back to last year,
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: how it ended,
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: the Denver play at the end of the first half,
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: all the turnovers,
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: and Every offseason, it's like, should he change his style of play?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Should he do this?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Should he do that?
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: When we sat down in the summer, I'm going to play football.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: I know how to play it until I can't.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: And when I can't play it the way I want to play it, it's probably when I'm done.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: So what did we talk about last week off of his horrendous interception that cost him
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: the game against the Patriots?
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Don't change.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Don't.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Play your style.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Play your brand.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Because the competitive juices...
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Are unlike anybody at the position in the sport, in my opinion.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: And they needed all of that in this game against the Rams.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: It's just every cent that has been paid to him.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Terry Pagula can feel so good at night as there is no wasted money.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: There's nothing going on like in Nashville with Cam Ward.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: There's no developing.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: There's no.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: I just gave Baker Mayfield a big contract, and this undrafted guy is better.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: There's none of that for an owner.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: For Terry Pegula, he can go to bed at night knowing every single cent.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: You might have to spend more whenever that comes up, but guess what?
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: You just keep getting more and more proof of concept for your investment.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And that's why I'm glad that we start heavy with 17 because he is the center
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: of this organization's universe.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: In every way.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Make a lot of problems go away.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And Lordy, they have problems.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: C.J.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Gardner-Johnson was a mess.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Not that you know through his celebrating.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm all for taunts.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: I'm all for celebrating.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: It is kind of interesting to see a player play so badly and try to stomp all over
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: the grave after the game.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: But you know what you were going to get in C.J.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Gardner-Johnson.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: The cornerback play.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Maxwell Harrison's the first-round pick.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: He's benched.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: He can't even get on the field.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: For most of this game, that's a problem.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: On the heels of Kyrie Elam,
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: another first-round pick that you eventually have to jettison away for scraps.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: There aren't really options at that position.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Igbenosin will at least fight.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Igbenosin
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: is tough.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I was just going to say, we'll get into it.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: I'm hard on a lot of these guys, but I like him so far.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: His fight is exactly what they need right now.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Sorry about it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: You hit him and it sparked me.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: But Joe Brady was getting a lot of criticism for the way in which he speaks
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: about his quarterback and professing his love for Josh Allen and we're going
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: to do everything in our power to empower Josh Allen and the kind
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: of rhetoric really day one of that introductory press conference.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I remember sitting there,
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: and you could see Josh Allen in row one looking up at Joe Brady with this gleam
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: in his eye.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Almost like he's looking at his wife, Haley Steinfeld.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: This love, this affection that they have for each other, it's real.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: But this is why, because shit's going to happen in a football game.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: There's going to be special teams, snafus if you're the LA Rams, and man...
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: That problem isn't going anywhere for the Rams.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: You're going to have fumbles.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: James Cook, again, puts it on the ground, and you're going to have those issues at cornerback.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: But if you can just remember that you've got Michael Jordan,
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Magic Johnson, all the names we've thrown around over the years.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: LeBron, Durant, Shaq.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: LeBron,
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: I bring up MJ and Magic Johnson because those teams also had to move on
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: to another coach to win a championship, right?
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Magic and Jordan had about 500 Hall of Famers playing with them.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Josh Allen does not.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: He does not.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: He does not.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: That's going to be your source of hope, though, all season long.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: And so I think it's important to note they have a coach who gets it.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Joe Brady gets it.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: And he was far from perfect in his seat as head coach in this game.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: But I think the fact that cosmically he knows you have to take the reins off of Josh Allen.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: That's how you win a game, like you won.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, let me get your take then on Joe Brady first.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: I guess, like, you know, let's reverse engineer it.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: The decision to just kick, what was it, 47?
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Should be at the ready here.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Oh, the... 45, I'm sorry.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: It was a 45-yarder in overtime for Tyler Bass when they could have tried...
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Inch a little closer for their kicker.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: I did appreciate his explanation after the game where the Rams are in all out blitz mode.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: They're going to crowd the line of scrimmage.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: You're not going to just take knees to melt the clock and lose two or three yards
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: and make it closer to a 50 yarder.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: But you also don't want to give the ball back to the Rams.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: A lot of bad things can happen if you try to run it to James Cook again, obviously.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: A lot of bad things can happen if you try to push the ball down the field.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: The passing game was a struggle.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: Josh Allen, yeah, you could run a boot or something.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: That could blow up in your face, and you got somebody right there, and you fumble.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Anything can happen.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: So they had a lot of time to think about that, right?
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: If you remember, there was a good – the play clock and the game clock We're in their favor.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: So they had a good 38, 39 seconds to just think about this.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: And then it hit the two-minute warning.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: And then they had that long break.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: So Joe Brady said it took a long time.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: They were going through all these scenarios in their head.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: And they decided, okay, 45 yards, Tyler Bass, kick it, end it, win it.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Initially, I was like, what in the hell are they thinking here?
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Get closer.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: And...
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: It's all resulting.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: I remember Sean McDermott used that word with me once when I sat down with him.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: We all do it, right?
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: It's a good decision if it worked out.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: It's a bad decision if it didn't.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Joe Brady can't get caught up into that.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: The process that led him to that decision to just kick it versus inch
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: a little closer with that element of risk.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: What did you make of that?
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: So I'm laughing because you are right.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: I think after this weekend too, we are,
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: And I love it too,
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: because we are, everybody now is a game time clock management expert.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Just like I used to say when I was in personnel, everybody's definitely a draft expert.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: On the day of the draft, the grades come out.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Nobody's played football.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: You know, Reuben Bain destroying the NFL.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: You see what I'm saying?
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: We got the Reuben Bain.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Well, we're going to get into,
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: I'm going to finish with him because we're going to,
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: we're going to talk about him at the end.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: But my point is that Everybody thinks they can do everybody's job.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And for this to be his fifth game as a head coach at whatever age he's at
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: and experience that he's had, A-plus, man.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Just keep going.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: You're going to learn.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: Learn from whatever you want from this game.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: You got away with one because you have 17, however you want to phrase it.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: But learn from it.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: You can't be too critical of Joe Brady right now.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: They're playing a big-time team, one of the best head coaches in the NFL, McVay.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: On the road, Monday Night Football, and you just won.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Great job.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: I like it.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Now, let's fine-tune it.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: We know there's a mess going on on defense.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: We can get there when you want.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Here's one thing I love that Joe Brady's doing,
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: the way he's handling Cook, because not everybody's gone through this before.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: When you have a leading rusher who,
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: at this point, I mean, we've talked about it for two years now, it's real.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: The fumbles are real.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Now, those punch-outs were amazing.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: I'm not taking away the punch-outs are incredible.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: I don't really know what else Cook can do because you have to give credit to the defense too.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: But it's in his head.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: It's in Brady's head as a head coach now.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: If he's thinking about,
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: can I not run Cook in the fourth quarter, which we've talked about before.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: So this is where they have to iron out.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: But what I love what he did was he just kept giving him the ball and didn't phase.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he phased him out a little bit.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: He mixed him in, but he got him right back involved.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: And I think that's key.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: You're not getting away from it.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: I talked about Adrian Peterson's the only one I keep thinking of with this,
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: where you have a top-level talent, but there is a serious issue.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: And I always say when I worked for the Saints in that NFC Championship game
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: when we beat Favre and the Vikings,
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: early in that game, the Vikings were the better team.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: They should have won that game that day.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: But Peterson fumbled early that killed some momentum for Minnesota.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: And I'm just telling you,
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: I remember thinking that – This guy,
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: you can never put Adrian Peterson as the greatest back ever in your conversations
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: because of that.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: He just had that issue.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: And that's what Cook has.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And I think you live with it as best you can,
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: but you have to still have, you have to believe in him, have faith in him.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: He has to know it.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: You saw one of the greatest running backs in
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: the NFL look like every high school kid you've ever seen that you've played with
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: or you've seen have a bad game.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: It brings you all back to it's humbling.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: It hurts.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: We're all rooting for Cook right now because we know how good he is.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: But it's not like second base Chuck Knobloch when you get in baseball
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: and you can't throw to first base from second base.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: It's not that because it's not that he has a mechanical issue, a toughness issue.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: I went back.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: I've looked at his fumbles.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: They are some really great plays by the defense, too.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: I don't always want it.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: They really do.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And he does have a lot of attempts.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: So you're going to have some more fumbles.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, we can get into all the basics of it.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: But I think you just got to keep keep the faith.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Keep going with him.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: He is so good.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: And the combo right now with Josh Allen and Cook in the backfield for any defensive coordinator.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Can't mess with it.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: You can't stop it, so just keep riding it.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: He's going to figure it out, and let's go.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: The whole city, the whole team at Buffalo, everybody just keep backing Cook.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: He'll be all right.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: And it aligns with what Joe Brady has said all along and believing in his players.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: You're not going to screw up and grab some bench and be in the doghouse
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: because you're going to – You're going to mess with a guy's mentality in
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: the short term and the long term.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: James Cook is one of, if not the best running back in football.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: And he showed it in this game.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Do you know he's averaging 5.6 yards per carry this season?
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: And that's the best of his career on the heels of leading the NFL in rushing
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: and everything that he can do.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: There's not many backs in the NFL that are that tough between the tackles and a home run threat.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Usually you're one or the other.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Or skewed heavy one way or the other.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: He does it all.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: You need him on the field.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: That's what I said.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Last night it just hit me.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: It's Adrian Peterson.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: The production equals all that tolerance, production.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: You got to live with it.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: The talent is that good, so keep moving.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: That being said, 15 fumbles in the last three years and five games.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: So it is a problem that he's got to figure out.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: But yeah, production equals tolerance.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: You just take it.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: You can take it.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: But to think about, like, so we're saying Joe Brady keeps, hey, keep riding it.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you saw the clip of the Alabama head coach this weekend,
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: but they had a play at the end of the game against Georgia,
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: and a player had like a penalty, a bad penalty.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: And as the player's coming off, you can read his lips saying, you just cost us the game.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Like that is, that's a little bit of the opposite of to me, how you want to handle.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: I did see that actually.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: How you want to handle your players when they're a little fragile and they had
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: a rough play and they know it.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: You might not want to just, I just think about how we always preach.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Like it's, it's never one play will cost you the game.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Hey, no, there's never one play.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And there's a,
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: I think X Packer, ha ha Clinton Dix.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: He's on the Alabama staff.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: He grabs the player and, Like, no, you need to listen to your coach here.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: And that was being praised by many for what I saw as, oh, I don't know if that's good coaching.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: I'm all for hard coaching, but there is some sort of line to straddle.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Fine line.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Are we ready to talk defense?
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Do you want to start or shall I?
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: Well,
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Let's start here.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: To me, most underrated play of the game.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Nobody's talking about it.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Two snaps before the Mavis block.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Russo, you know, he's 6'6", the long arm, unbelievable block.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: But he might have made a better play two snaps before that.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: It looks inevitable.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: Cook fumbles, the Rams drive right down the field.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: They're already in long field goal range.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: And I know Sean McVay was killing himself.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: And good for him, I guess.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: He wants to fall out all the swords that he can.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: And he was so conservative in that Bears divisional round game last year.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: I still remember that one where he just turtled up.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: They stopped the Bears at the goal line when it really could have been a pick six.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: On fourth and goal.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: But they get the ball, and they just were running into a brick wall.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: They gave it right back to Caleb Williams.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Caleb Williams had the improbable TD to Cole Komet.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: And Chamevae said it then.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: He got way too conservative, way too safe.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: Should have put the ball in Matthew Stafford's hands, all that.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: And he kind of said the same stuff after this game.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: And true, they did run it on third and five.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: The play before that, though, they had a nice little receiver screen to Puka Nakua.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: And before that, Tyron Williams is wide open down the middle of the field.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, the Bills linebackers are also a mess right now.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: That was a nice day.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: And Greg Russo saved the day.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Russo was in his face.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: He forced the errant overthrow.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: That's a completion, a touchdown, walk off.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And Russo saved the game there and then saved it again with a blocked field goal.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: He's been incredible for the Bills.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Deion Walker has been incredible for the Bills.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Didn't make as many splash plays in this game.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: But he has.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: We've got a story at Golong.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: But he has.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: He's a presence.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: It's funny.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: I was laughing.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: I read your story,
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: and it was awesome on Walker because last week when we were talking about him,
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: or a couple weeks ago,
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: I mentioned I went back and watched him at Kentucky from a couple years ago
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: because he had a high production year, and you had kind of smiled.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: And you didn't tell me at the time.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: You were already digging away on that.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: So it was fun.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: It was cool.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, okay.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: That's why he was laughing.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: It was good to hear all the...
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: But go ahead.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: But to your point, those two...
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: I want your take, though, because you're... As an aside, Eagle Scout, St.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Scout, Bill's Director of Personnel, Jim Onus, obviously.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: I was really fascinated by his fall to 109 overall.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: It's tattooed on his shoulder.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: He doesn't have a chip on the shoulder.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: He's...
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Whether it's Deion Walker himself,
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: his coaches,
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: everybody says he doesn't use that as motivation,
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: but he does have a tattoo of where he was picked.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And we heard about the back issue, and that obviously was a problem.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And it's a pars defect,
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: which a lot of adolescents get,
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: where it's like a crack between the vertebrae, right?
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And he just got it later in life.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: And he attributed...
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: The lack of production,
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: his junior year at Kentucky,
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: I think he had seven and a half sacks as a sophomore, one as a junior.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, as a nose tackle, though,
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: not to cut you off,
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: but as a nose tackle or D tackle at his size, sacks, the stats, we don't give it.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: We don't care about the stats.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: What we care about is that freak movement that you have.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: And now I want you to get back on this,
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: but I think where you're headed, the medical thing may be the reason.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: It was, but where I want your scouting perspective is,
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: and Brandon Bean was really honest,
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: because whether it's the GM in Buffalo,
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: the GM for any of the 32 teams, you're trying to get the truth.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: You're trying to get into these buildings and get the good, the bad, the ugly.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: You know there's a lot of dabbles out there that are going to just wax poetic
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: about everybody in the building being a stand-up human being.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: It's hard to get the truth.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: So Deion Walker doesn't even blame the NFL for his fall to 109.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: He pinpointed it.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: It was the offensive coordinator and people on the offensive staff bad-mouthing him
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: to NFL teams, saying that he's lazy.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: And that was where they got out.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: There it is.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: Vince Moreau was the associate head coach.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: He was there in Kentucky.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: He liked the head coach kind of had his back as well.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: But he's like, you know, The NFL teams, they don't really know.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: They're just trying to get the truth.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: So if you're hearing that I'm lazy from these coaches,
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: and he didn't even want to blame some of those coaches because he's like,
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: they're not exactly talking to the trainer about my pars defect and what I'm going
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: through and the pain that I have out there.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: So anyways, he had it all up.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: And yeah, he would play high.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: He admitted he'd kind of stand up right away and get pushed around at times.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: That's how a Deion Walker falls somehow to the fourth round.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's the strength of the team.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Walker, Dwayne Carter had a big play.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Greg Rousseau had the two game-saving plays.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: I suppose you hang your hat on that if you're Buffalo.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: You're going to be relying on these guys to get any stops,
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: to get any turnovers, because there are issues galore.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: In the secondary, especially.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, Matthew Stafford, he got it.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: I felt like he threw to Puka Nakua 50 times.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: 24 targets to Puka Nakua.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: It seems like every game, too.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: Almost to the point.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: That's funny you're saying.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: It doesn't seem like there's enough catches to go around for the Rams,
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: for all these guys, but they're doing it.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: I would be frustrated if you're a Bills fan out there,
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: though, is, okay, Obviously, there are holes at safety, at corner, at linebacker.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Why isn't Jim Leonard just going down swinging?
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: You know, and I talked to Russo about this.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: I'll write a story this week.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: He loves the scheme.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: He loves creating havoc up front,
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: sending pressure,
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: attacking, not just sitting back and letting offenses go 12 to 15 plays.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: Yet, You watch the Bills' defense, and I don't know.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: I haven't crunched the numbers.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: It didn't seem like they wanted to pressure Stafford a ton or show him a bunch
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: of different stuff.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: I suppose Stafford's seen it all, and he'll carve you up that way.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: But you're getting carved up anyways.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: And they were playing that 15-play drive kind of style in this game.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Brady even referenced it at halftime and then after the game that they were pleased
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: with the fact that the Rams had to work for their points,
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: work throughout their drives.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Puka's longest reception was 21 yards on his 17 receptions.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: But that strikes me as the defensive old.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: The defensive new should be attacking.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Even if it's not pretty, do whatever you can to wreak havoc.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Get a turnover.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Get a stop.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Get the ball back to Josh Allen.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: Big picture-wise, something is amiss there, it appears.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: We were texting a little bit earlier in the week on...
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: When a defensive coordinator starts using the word simplify,
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: like Jim Leonard did, that that can be a problem.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: So maybe they are trying to simplify things in a complicated scheme, and this is the result.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: The reason I roll eyes or when I text you simplify scares me is because
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: when you enter a – coaches are teachers.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: So if you're teaching, anybody knows.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: You build your syllabus, your outline for the class, your whole – There's a progression.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: And I don't like if you're coming in blazing and now you got to back off and simplify.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: That doesn't make sense to me.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: The great teachers, you teach.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: You establish your base.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: This is what we are.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Everybody knows it.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: This is what we do.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: These are our core values.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Until that is done, until the core value is in place, then you add on.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: That might be the old school in me.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: But that's how football I've always been raised and taught with it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: I've seen it from my whole life,
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: from my father,
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: who's a Division III Hall of Fame head coach,
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: to Andy Reid starting a West Coast offense in Philly,
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: to Sean Payton starting his offense from fresh in New Orleans.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: I've seen all of this, and there are progressions, and it goes on defense too.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: And that's what I always worry about when I just, what are you?
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: I still don't know what you are.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Tell me what you are.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Don't tell me you're a mix of 4-3.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: You're a match.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: You're this.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: We're a zone.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: We're multiple.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: No.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: I want to know you're 3-4, 4-3.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: I want to know roles because those are the teams that draft the best, too.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: The teams that know what you are, you draft the best.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: I always felt that way in New Orleans.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: We could close our eyes, hear another scout talk about a player from his area and already know.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: He's probably going to end up on our team.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Like he hit all the check marks that we look for, blah, blah, blah.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: That's the great teams when you're rolling like that.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: And that's where you got to get to is the Bills right now.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: And I'm not, it's still, look, it's game five for all this.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't mean it can't be corrected because you have some things going on,
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: like we say, that are good up front on the D line that you like.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Now, last night, I didn't notice much, but it's okay.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: It was a tough game.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: You're going against, you know, world-class players.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: We can shootouts or shootouts.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: Um, But like I said, there's some good things on the D-line.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: So can you build on that?
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but man, the rest of that defense to me, I don't know.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: I keep saying it.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I've said it now for a year and a half on this pod.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: I don't see the talent.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: I don't think – I tell you.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: So I'm already documented.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: I don't want to come across too like I'm against it.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: I just don't see the talent.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: So that's why it's hard
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: for me to say how do you fix it.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Missing on two first-round cornerbacks would be really bad.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Now – The saving grace with the Kyrie alum pick was Christian Bedford finding him.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: But what have I said?
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: How does he look to you, though?
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: How does he fit into this?
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he looks a little he looks off.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: He looks I don't want to say slow, but he looks off.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean,
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: literally off these third and three and third and fours where
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: the cornerbacks are not even on the screen.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: What?
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Create pressure, send blitzes, have your cornerbacks up in their mug.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: If you get beat for 70 yards, who gives a shit?
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Josh Allen is going to get the ball and he's going to score.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: That's the beauty of an attacking scheme.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: And Russo talked about that.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: He's like, we got to get the ball back to Josh Allen as often as we can.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: And this was a point made by a coach on the Packers staff
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: with How Jeff Halfley's defense and Matt LaFleur's offense really clashed toward
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: the end of last season when Green Bay's offense was at its best.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And you think about that Bears playoff game,
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: quick strike, Watson, Golden,
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: who are like, I guess the best one-two punch at receiver in the NFL right now.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: And it's five plays, 80 yards, touchdown.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: And then the defense with Halfley, it's very bend but don't break.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: McDermott-like, keep it all in front of you.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Force them to go the length of the field because there'll be a holding call.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: There'll be a sack.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Something will screw it up.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: It's sound logic.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: It works for a lot of teams.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: But then you have a case that Chicago, the three and outs start adding up.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: The defense is on the field forever.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: They're getting gassed.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: They're getting worn down.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: And it all comes to a head.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: So why not when you've got Josh Allen?
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: We talked about it before the season, Jim.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Just let the dogs out.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Go.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Hell, whatever's being called isn't really working right now.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Granted,
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: you had the MVP winner and then the player who finished just,
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: what, a vote shy of winning MVP in back-to-back weeks, but it has not been pretty.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Maybe what the doctor ordered is a little Kirk Cousins out there in Las Vegas.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, that leads me.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Do you know if the Bills are staying out West?
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: Are they going back?
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: They are.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: What would you do?
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Is that smart?
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: Not smart?
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: Smart.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Stay.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: That's tough.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: And now you're in this, you go into kind of a, you know, you're in this bunker mentality.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: It's kind of, it breaks up the season, to be honest.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: I think they, and nobody hates LA and Vegas.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: So wherever they're staying is going to
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: be all right.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Josh Allen had a quote.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: I'm paraphrasing.
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: We're trusting guys to be professionals here.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: Man, I told you before, we had those talks in draft meetings.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: I worked for New Orleans all the time.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's a different beast when you live in certain cities, New Orleans being one of them.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the curfew is there in Vegas or how many days they're staying in Vegas.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: I would imagine,
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: a few of these vested vets who have lived in Hamburg or Orchard Park or Colton,
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: New York may Want to explore.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Maybe want to stray from the nest.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: They got the win.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: And you don't care how you get it.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: I think the identity on defense is a major question mark.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: The identity of the team is not, though.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, the resilience that they showed is evident once again, whether it's whoever.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, it starts with Josh Allen.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: He's the Energy source for everything.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: But even like a Ty Johnson, he had some really big plays in this game.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: It seems like whenever he touches the ball, good things happen.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Bench and Russo, Khalil Shakir had the 57-yarder.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: The play right before Cook's fumble, I think it was a shoestring tackle by Kitchens.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: So to hang in there through the ups,
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: through the downs,
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: through the ebbs,
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: through the flows,
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: there are a lot of teams with a lot of players who just don't respond
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: to things going haywire well.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: Green Bay got back on track, 31-7 against Chicago.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: We'll see where their season goes now.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: But that has been a problem for LeFleur's teams up to that point.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: But that's what stood out to me, Jim.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, just...
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: The guts, the resiliency, deriving hope from 17.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: What was your final takeaway from this win?
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Well, a couple things.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: I want to touch real quick for you.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: The Rams, the special teams coordinator, I would think, may be out like today.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: I have a feeling that could be going down.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: I've been through that before.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: The way McVay spoke, you know, kind of after the game, he was angry.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: He was angry for a reason.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: So that's going to get fixed.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: The other thing,
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: that safety,
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: the Bills may have cost the Rams safety number 37, last name Lake from UCLA.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: They may have cost him his – Quentin Lake.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Quentin Lake needs to be a – he doesn't move.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: The Bills exposed him badly last night in space.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: He's a slow guy to begin with.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: He was a late-round pick.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: That guy can't be playing.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: He should not be in space like that.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: He can't move.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: So I think the Rams,
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: they have some things to clean up there that the Bills definitely exposed
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: that player on defense for sure.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: But, yeah, this was the Josh Allen moment.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: It's his team.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: Can't wait to see where it goes.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: The defense has to hang tight, keep getting after the quarterback, pop that ball out.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: That's like break and serve at this point, and you should be good to go with 17.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: I think that's where they're at, and keep pulling for Cook to hold on.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: But I think we know what this team is right now.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the real question is, Josh Allen, does he get a few days off a change in diapers?
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: He took such pride in it and detailed the art of a tightly strapped diaper
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: and waking up in the middle of the night.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: I feel like, let's give Josh just a night or two off.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: He earned it.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: He earned it.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: I know they don't like nannies and help,
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: and him and Haley are doing it all themselves, which is awesome.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: I just hope he gets at least one full night's sleep after that game.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: You know, you're saying this.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: I love the analogy.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: I forget who said it.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: Somebody's like, he's treating his body like a rental car.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the Bills don't want to hear that.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: No.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: No, but the way you're just talking, you're right, though.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: The Bills owe him this week in Vegas.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Like, Cook, everybody owes Josh Allen a little bit, okay?
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Like, he needs to be able to maybe let him step up this week.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Against Vegas.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: They owe him.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: 54 pass attempts for Stafford.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: He was only hit four times.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: I thought that's what I was going to say.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: I didn't notice.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: I was really, I thought the Rams, if you really, I went back, I was looking enough.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: They were paying attention to Walker.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: He was having a tough time getting his initial.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: He likes to like, like just shock people with that length off the ball.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: And then he can kind of get you off balance.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, he just gets you awkwardly pushes people around, but.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: To be honest,
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: like his movement skills aren't,
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: he's not a great, like Marcel Darius was a top high level athlete at D Tackle.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: Walker's not a great athlete.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: He's a big, powerful, kind of just move straight ahead type player.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: But his actual speed and so it's his numbers, his testing numbers are bad, like combine stuff.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: So when I watched him, but anyway, point is they did a good job on him.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: They paid attention to him, kind of grabbed him off the snap, neutralized him a little bit.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: And Stafford, what do I always tell you about the great quarterbacks?
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: They get rid of the football.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: They don't take sacks.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Jeff Rogers, the Bill's special teams coordinator, let's give him a game ball, too.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Whether it's Tyler Bass getting his confidence back.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: you know that Jeff Rogers has to relay that to Joe Brady at that two-minute mark
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: in overtime.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Is where's CBass' head at?
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: In so many words.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: And he's got to sound like this is what he did at warmup.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: This is where he's at confidence-wise.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: It's such a mental position.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Got Trey Smack is hitting 60 yarders.
- 37:52SPEAKER_01: Now he can't make a kick.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Harrison Beavis had the game winner in the frigid cold against the Bears.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Now he can't make a kick.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Week to week, you don't know where these kickers are mentally.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: And that wide right to in the 23 divisional round against
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: the Chiefs could have ruined Tyler Bass's career.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: And they've got the confidence in him to step up, drill that kick.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: And also Jeff Schwartz, former NFL lineman, does an excellent job wherever you hear him.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: We've had him on the pod too.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: He pointed this out, just how the schematics of that block.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: It was to a tee.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Michael Hoyt to Rousseau right down the line.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Everybody just did their job perfectly to allow Rousseau to get in there and get an arm up.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: That's coaching.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: And you get what you emphasize, as Mike McCarthy loved to say.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: It does not seem like the Rams really give a damn about special teams.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: It's like a nuisance to McVay, Shanahan, LaFleur, these coaches from that tree.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Like, ugh, I don't want to deal with special teams.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: That's for...
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: That's for the fools.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: That's for the peasants.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Screw it.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: It matters.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: It matters.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: You saw it in Philly, Jacksonville.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Eight seconds.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: It matters.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: And whatever Jeff Rogers is doing is working.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: So kudos to him.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: Just do whatever you can to.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: That's the only thing I've ever learned with kickers.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: You're never going to be able to fully.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: They're going to go through it.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: They're going to have breakdowns, and it's hard.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: So do whatever you can to avoid having to use kickers.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Score touchdowns.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: That's what I've always said.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: We do want them eliminated from the game.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: We're giving kickers way too much love.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: We want them out of football.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: Stop.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: They're not yet.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Don't let those guys ruin your careers.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: You guys are out there killing yourselves.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: I'm with you on Joe Brady.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: That's like his first nut cutting time making decisions on the fly game.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: That former fifth string wide receiver in high school running on the field
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: when it wasn't his turn.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: It's a strength of his to make decisions quick.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: And however that went down at the end,
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: he was going to be praised or killed and to have the conviction to do what he did.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: He did it.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: Well done, Joe Brady.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: But he might do it differently next time saying he learned from it, you know, and it's.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: The chip shot field goal though, Jim.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: The chip shot field goal.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: It made me want to puke.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: Hard to believe.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: You know it's going to be a shootout.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: I'm with you.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: Even though the defense did a pretty good job against Stafford for a while,
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: you know they're going to put up points to settle for.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: It was a, oh goodness, a 23-yard field goal.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: It's hard to believe.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: A fourth and three?
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: No.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: We're better than that.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a fourth and three from the Rams five.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: No, we're better than that.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Agree.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: You break my heart.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: We're better than that.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: We have 17.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: All right, let's end it there on a somber note involving kicking.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: No, last thing.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: I snuck in Reuben Bain, the defensive end rookie for Tampa.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: For your people that follow prop wagering, he's going to get a sack this week.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: They play Pittsburgh.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: He's going to get the old man.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Bain, his first sack in his NFL will be this week against Aaron Rodgers.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: He's got to get one.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: He's done nothing.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: Noted Bain hater, Jim Otis, says Bain.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: No, not hater, just thought he was overdrafted.
- 41:27SPEAKER_00: A little overdrafted.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: A little overdrafted.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: A little overdrafted.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: I like the player.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: He is tough.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: He is a tough player.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: I like him.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: That's why I think he's going to get one because I feel now I'm kind of pulling for him.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: Like, all right, now it's time to do something.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Reuben Bain will sack Aaron Rodgers.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: I hate gambling.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: It's a poison on society.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: And here you are dropping frickin' prop bets on a Bills podcast.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: I wanted to talk about Bain.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: You're killing me.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: I just wanted to talk about Bain.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: We'll allow it.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: We'll allow it.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: We didn't mention Keyon Coleman.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: I thought we were going to get to Keyon, but we'll save that for another day.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: that was a problem when Kincaid,
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: Knox, and Keyon Coleman combined for three receptions for 20 yards.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: They got to get that passing game going.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: They need DJ Moore on the field.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Maybe we buried the lead here.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good point.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: Offense look different without him.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, he can get separation.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: He gets open.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: Josh goes to him.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: They need DJ Moore back ASAP.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: But in the meantime, you get this crazy-ass win.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: The Bills will take it and head to Sin City to face the Raiders next.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Jim Onus, thank you so much for your time.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: Everybody out there, thank you so much for watching, listening, sharing, and reading.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Deion Walker got a lengthy feature live at golongtd.com.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: Everybody can read it.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: And I sat down with Deion Walker at his locker, Greg Rousseau, Dwayne Carter, Jason Rebrovich.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: The senior defensive assistant he's been coaching forever.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, you were with him in Buffalo.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: Rebs is, hey, D3 Nation.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: Rebs, he's part of D3 Nation.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: SUNY Cortland, he was awesome, Jim.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: He was awesome to talk to.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: His analogy for defensive line play was great.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: He's like, it's like you're driving down the road.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: A deer jumps in front of you, and you've got to make that decision right now.
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: Am I going to hit the deer?
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: Am I going to swerve?
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Am I going to break?
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: And there's so much that leads up to that millisecond decision that Deion Walker,
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: I think we answered the question,
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: how in the hell is he doing this at 6'8",
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: 3.30, moving like he moves, as physically imposing as he is.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: It really is...
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: All between the ears.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: He's not just guessing out there.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: He really is.
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: No, he's powerful.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: He's putting in a lot of film work and reading linemen and knowing how
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: to redistribute somebody's weight.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: He did it to Panay Sewell in week two.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: But yeah, Rebs, he was great.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: And I totally forgot about your connection.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: He was there for Marone, for Rex, worked a lot with Marcel Darius.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: And we'll finish on Rebs because I want to give him respect
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: because he has been around some great defensive lines.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Players and as a unit and coaches, he has been through it.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: So he, I have a lot of respect for Rebs and the coaching he is.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: And when you hear him speak,
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: I know you were loving it because he is a true football,
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: you know, he's blood and guts type.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: Rebs is, he's, he's through and through old school football.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: So I know you like that.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: No, he's, he's qualified.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: Rebs is a good football coach.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: He was with the Saxville Jaguars.
- 44:43SPEAKER_00: You know, that crew that went down there.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: They took him down there.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: Robbed of the Super Bowl.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: Miles Jack wasn't down.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: And he's not a bullshitter, which I appreciate.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: You can tell he's given it to these guys straight.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: He's had a lot of heart-to-heart conversations with Deion Walker.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: He's pulling the best out of Deion Walker.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: And that's what it takes.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: and I think one question that a lot of people had in Kentucky,
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: even early on in Buffalo,
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: Brandon Beam,
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: where they had him in on that top 30 visit,
- 45:12SPEAKER_01: and they're trying to see what makes him tick.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: You got to make sure this guy loves football, that he's got that fire inside.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: Some have it, some don't.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: And his personality is very jovial.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: Rubbervich called him like a bumbling giant.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: And then he dove into the story of, yes, one day they had a heart-to-heart conversation.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: And he was blunt, I'm sure, and used rhetoric he could not repeat.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Then practice began.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: They dispersed individuals.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: And Deion Walker absolutely launched him.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: And he crashed on his shoulder.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: The coach did.
