Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Cardinals bounce back with series win over Dodgers: Are they officially a good team?
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: What's that?
- 0:06Speaker 2: Oh, no, no big deal, just another series win, this
- 0:09Speaker 2: one over the Rainy World Series champions. Welcome back to
- 0:12Speaker 2: Cardinal Territory, Katieu, Bernie Nicholas, here with you. The Saint
- 0:16Speaker 2: Louis Cardinals played another thrilling series here at Bushetia, and
- 0:19Speaker 2: they took two or three from the Dodgers, won five nothing,
- 0:22Speaker 2: shut them out on Friday, the walk off win two
- 0:24Speaker 2: to one on Saturday, and lost seven to three today.
- 0:26Speaker 2: But a lot to like about Michael mcgreevy's spots start,
- 0:29Speaker 2: which we'll get into. All around, though, pretty good weekend
- 0:33Speaker 2: for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 0:34Speaker 1: They seem to be back on track. Bernie, your opinions.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Well, I know, we'll talk about McGreevy. I'm totally cool
- 0:40Speaker 3: with the way he pitched the to day. You know,
- 0:42Speaker 3: he showed some real quality And as I told you
- 0:46Speaker 3: before we started recording, I mean, did we really think
- 0:49Speaker 3: that in three days the Los Angeles Dodgers wouldn't score
- 0:53Speaker 3: some runs?
- 0:53Speaker 1: Right?
- 0:54Speaker 3: I mean, you know it's inevitable. They did an incredible
- 0:57Speaker 3: job really holding the Dodgers down, as like Otani and
- 1:01Speaker 3: Freeman especially so. But I like the way McGreevy looked
- 1:05Speaker 3: today like the way he battled back up. The other
- 1:07Speaker 3: thing is, and we were talking about this, so the Cardinals,
- 1:10Speaker 3: you know, win a series from the Dodgers, and is
- 1:14Speaker 3: it time? And I'm nationally is one thing, but I'm
- 1:17Speaker 3: even talking about locally, isn't it time that we sort
- 1:22Speaker 3: of view the Cardinals differently? You know? Whenever they beat
- 1:26Speaker 3: a really good team, like they win in Philadelphia or
- 1:29Speaker 3: you know, something like that. You know, they beat the
- 1:31Speaker 3: Mets here, you know, whatever it may be. Now, the
- 1:35Speaker 3: Dodgers and Arizona before that, there's always kind of like,
- 1:39Speaker 3: you know, collectively, we're like surprised, we're a little surprised. Well,
- 1:43Speaker 3: why should we be surprised? The Cardinals have been once
- 1:46Speaker 3: they got their bullpen straight. The Cardinals have been winning
- 1:50Speaker 3: series against really good teams, you know, for more than
- 1:53Speaker 3: to say April May, you know, almost two months. So
- 1:57Speaker 3: this is who they are. But we we you know,
- 1:59Speaker 3: I think I think in Saint Louis, you know, and
- 2:02Speaker 3: this applies to everybody. I'm not dogging fans, there's almost
- 2:05Speaker 3: this tendency to just kind of like, okay, they you know,
- 2:07Speaker 3: they didn't have a good series against Kansas City, at
- 2:10Speaker 3: least what you know with It's like everybody's like, oh
- 2:14Speaker 3: the other shoe about the drop type thing. I think
- 2:17Speaker 3: it's I think it's kind of funny. There's anxiety over
- 2:20Speaker 3: the Cardinals when they lose a series, but we sort
- 2:22Speaker 3: of we almost minimize the fact that they've had so
- 2:25Speaker 3: much success against really good teams.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're reading my mind. Shocker, because I
- 2:32Speaker 2: struggle with this a little bit. The Cardinals had that
- 2:35Speaker 2: not good series against Texas and I got a lot
- 2:38Speaker 2: of here they go aggressing to their met and the
- 2:40Speaker 2: real Cardinals are here, and I thought, well, they just
- 2:43Speaker 2: won eight of their last ten series and they tied
- 2:45Speaker 2: one of those, So really nine out of ten successful
- 2:47Speaker 2: series and they have one bad one that's going to
- 2:50Speaker 2: happen over the course of a one hundred and sixty
- 2:52Speaker 2: two game season. I think we're being a little dramatic.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And the Royal series didn't go much better. But look,
- 2:57Speaker 2: there's a doubleheader in there. It is really hard to
- 2:59Speaker 2: win both games of a doubleheader. I know the Cardinals
- 3:01Speaker 2: have done that a couple times, but that does not
- 3:03Speaker 2: take away from how difficult that task is.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And came in and you know, it was like the
- 3:08Speaker 1: sky was.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Falling, you know, the pitching. Here comes the regression. Matthew liberatory,
- 3:12Speaker 2: he is who he is. That was his first bad start,
- 3:15Speaker 2: like really bad start, where the metrics weren't there and
- 3:18Speaker 2: the mechanics weren't there all season, And I get we've
- 3:20Speaker 2: been conditioned to expect the worst with his organization, So
- 3:23Speaker 2: maybe that's why we're a little hesitant to accept that
- 3:25Speaker 2: good things are happening here. But my argument there, especially
- 3:29Speaker 2: seeing how this how this team played against the Dodgers,
- 3:32Speaker 2: is I actually think the average is a series like this,
- 3:35Speaker 2: and the anomalies are a series like the Rangers series
- 3:38Speaker 2: and to an extent, the Royal series. So I don't
- 3:39Speaker 2: think it was that bad of a series. And maybe
- 3:42Speaker 2: the Saint Louis Cardinals are a good team this year.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Are we ready to say that?
- 3:49Speaker 3: You know, you and I did this a couple three
- 3:51Speaker 3: weeks back, maybe, and I think we agreed at that
- 3:53Speaker 3: time we were, Yeah, I think they're good. But I'm
- 3:57Speaker 3: even more convinced that they're good. You know why, because
- 3:59Speaker 3: you find out of the team when they hit their
- 4:01Speaker 3: first little rut, like the Cardinals have been just rolling
- 4:03Speaker 3: over everybody. You know, and they lost what was it,
- 4:06Speaker 3: they lost three three out of five series, two in
- 4:10Speaker 3: a row, and you know, they were like five hundred
- 4:13Speaker 3: for about two weeks, and so you're like, okay, well
- 4:18Speaker 3: they've they've come back to earth. Now what now they
- 4:22Speaker 3: beat the Dodgers two out of three and they're pitching
- 4:25Speaker 3: for two days, held them to one run in eighteen innings,
- 4:29Speaker 3: you know stuff. So I think we need to have
- 4:33Speaker 3: a little more confidence in them. But the other thing,
- 4:35Speaker 3: and I'm not going to get into like, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 3: a lot of numbers in terms of but I was checking.
- 4:39Speaker 3: You know, you go through all the teams in the
- 4:41Speaker 3: National League that are considered better than the Cars. Okay,
- 4:45Speaker 3: they've all had patches where they're terrible. They all, they've all,
- 4:49Speaker 3: you know, they're like, this isn't a Saint Louis thing
- 4:52Speaker 3: where the team plays well and then it maybe stinks up,
- 4:55Speaker 3: it stinks a couple series. Everybody does that, everybody.
- 5:00Speaker 2: So literally, the Phillies got set by the Pirates this weekend.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Are we ready to say the Phillies are not a
- 5:04Speaker 2: good baseball team?
- 5:05Speaker 3: Yeah? I didn't even realize that. And then the other
- 5:07Speaker 3: thing I was telling you about this this morning, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 3: just to update it. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised that
- 5:13Speaker 3: they beat the Dodgers two out of three at home,
- 5:15Speaker 3: because number one, First of all, the Cardinals are very
- 5:17Speaker 3: good at home. The Dodgers are about a five hundred
- 5:20Speaker 3: team on the road. But the other thing, that's here's
- 5:23Speaker 3: stuff I don't think most Cardinals fans realize. And by
- 5:25Speaker 3: the way, I didn't realize it either until I looked
- 5:27Speaker 3: it up. The Cardinals actually have a better record than
- 5:30Speaker 3: the Dodgers since April eleven. That's early in the season.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Remember when the Cardinals got home from they had that
- 5:35Speaker 3: terrible trip to Boston then Pittsburgh. Since that road trip,
- 5:41Speaker 3: the Cardinals have a better record. They're thirty two and
- 5:45Speaker 3: twenty three, and you know the Dodgers over that time, Well,
- 5:51Speaker 3: I don't. I didn't look the Dodgers' record up, but
- 5:53Speaker 3: I know putty this way. See, I'm screwing up my
- 5:56Speaker 3: own note I got. Since April eleventh, the Cardinals have
- 6:00Speaker 3: the third best winning percentage of the National League, behind
- 6:03Speaker 3: Chicago and the Mets. Now, if you want to go
- 6:05Speaker 3: to April thirtieth, if you want to go from the
- 6:07Speaker 3: start of May, you want to go. Since May fourth,
- 6:09Speaker 3: the Cardinals have the best record either in the National
- 6:12Speaker 3: League or the Majors. And the thing that's really kind
- 6:15Speaker 3: of funny to me. Since May the fourth, when the
- 6:18Speaker 3: Cardinals got hot, going into today, they were seven and
- 6:21Speaker 3: a half games ahead of the Dodgers. Since May the fourth,
- 6:25Speaker 3: they have a better record than the Dodgers since April eleventh.
- 6:28Speaker 3: So I gotta admit, though, I'm not being a hypocrite.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I mean, I'm gonna same way. I was the same way.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I get it. You know.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I thought, maybe, like, well, they'll probably yeah, maybe they'll
- 6:38Speaker 3: lose two out of three, you know, the Cardinals, And
- 6:41Speaker 3: so I was a little skeptical, even though the Dodgers
- 6:43Speaker 3: are torn up, just chewed up by pitching injuries. But no,
- 6:48Speaker 3: I think maybe we need to give the fellows a
- 6:51Speaker 3: little more confidence, show a little more confidence to them.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I tend to have a little bit of an overreaction
- 6:56Speaker 3: when they play a couple they play an ugly series.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I don't like it. It's also a good sign because
- 7:01Speaker 3: it means that I expect more from them, and we
- 7:03Speaker 3: should because they're good.
- 7:05Speaker 2: They are, They've I think they've earned this kind of again.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I know when you've had trust issues with his organization,
- 7:11Speaker 2: like many of you feel that you have.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I certainly understand you have this. You've been guarded. I
- 7:15Speaker 1: get it. Let's unpack that. But they've done a really
- 7:19Speaker 1: nice job in coming out.
- 7:20Speaker 2: A here and after the Rangers series sucked and they
- 7:23Speaker 2: come out against Kansas.
- 7:24Speaker 1: City and doesn't go their way. The weather does play
- 7:26Speaker 1: into that.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Then you're all of a sudden looking at the Los
- 7:29Speaker 2: Angeles Dodgers and you're like, oh, great, But good teams
- 7:33Speaker 2: respond to that. And something that Allie Marmal said postgame
- 7:35Speaker 2: today stuck with me. He said, look, we dropped the
- 7:38Speaker 2: game today, didn't sweep them, but they felt us every
- 7:41Speaker 2: single inning of all three of these games. They felt
- 7:45Speaker 2: us pressing, they felt our advats, they felt our defense.
- 7:48Speaker 1: They could not let up.
- 7:49Speaker 2: And that was so true because while the Cardinals didn't
- 7:52Speaker 2: cash in on an abundance of scoring opportunities in Sunday's game,
- 7:55Speaker 2: they were there and the Dodgers had to keep tacking
- 7:57Speaker 2: on to ensure that they felt comfortable with that lead.
- 8:00Speaker 2: That's a sign of a good team that they came
- 8:02Speaker 2: out here and they said, yeah, we had not a
- 8:04Speaker 2: great week of baseball. We're facing one of the best
- 8:05Speaker 2: teams in baseball at home, and this can go one
- 8:08Speaker 2: of two ways. We can roll over or we can fight.
- 8:11Speaker 2: They fought, They took two out of three, and even
- 8:13Speaker 2: their lost today. I didn't really have a lot of
- 8:14Speaker 2: issue with and we'll get into McGreevy later in the show.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Sure, but look how many good teams do the Cardinals
- 8:20Speaker 1: have to beat?
- 8:20Speaker 2: I mean, let's look at the records between the two
- 8:22Speaker 2: right now, Bernie at the Dodgers are thirty nine and
- 8:24Speaker 2: twenty seven. The Cardinals are thirty six and twenty nine.
- 8:27Speaker 2: That's not that far apart from each other. So the ironically,
- 8:32Speaker 2: the last I think truly good team the Cardinals have
- 8:35Speaker 2: to face in the National League it's the Chicago Cubs,
- 8:38Speaker 2: and they'll see them for the first time at the
- 8:40Speaker 2: end of June. But I mean, am I out here
- 8:44Speaker 2: saying that the Cardinals are like the favorite to win
- 8:45Speaker 2: the World Series?
- 8:46Speaker 1: No, of course not.
- 8:47Speaker 2: But when I'm looking at the National League, do I
- 8:50Speaker 2: throw the Cardinals now in.
- 8:51Speaker 1: The competitive team bucket? I do, I very much, do
- 8:55Speaker 1: you want?
- 8:55Speaker 3: And yeah, one more point to add, and this is
- 8:57Speaker 3: something I know a lot of Cardinals fans know and
- 8:59Speaker 3: even the Cardinals loss today, but coming into today, you know,
- 9:03Speaker 3: they had the third best record in the majors against
- 9:06Speaker 3: teams with a winning record. They were, they were behind
- 9:09Speaker 3: the Mets and the Yankees. They were. They have they
- 9:12Speaker 3: had a better they had they Yeah, the Cardinals, the
- 9:15Speaker 3: poor little Cardinals had a better record against winning teams
- 9:19Speaker 3: than the mighty Dodgers with their If you add in
- 9:21Speaker 3: the penalties and all this stuff of the luxury tax,
- 9:24Speaker 3: the Dodgers are gonna end up spending five hundred and
- 9:26Speaker 3: sixty million players this year. So the poor little, the
- 9:28Speaker 3: poor little you know, the poor little weak Cardinals, a
- 9:32Speaker 3: little the little engine that could. You know, they're they're
- 9:35Speaker 3: they're a good team. So let's let's show let's show
- 9:38Speaker 3: them some respect.
- 9:39Speaker 2: We're declaring this five fifty two pm Central Time Sundays.
- 9:42Speaker 2: You may say, Louis Cardinals are a good baseball team.
- 9:45Speaker 3: They got, they got they got another test though Toronto
- 9:48Speaker 3: has been red hot there, so this will be another
- 9:51Speaker 3: test for our poor little Cardinals.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I think heading into play today, the buddhas had what
- 9:57Speaker 2: eleven of their last twelve, but some really good base fall,
- 10:00Speaker 2: so we'll see a never ending test over the course.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Of six months. What a season?
- 10:05Speaker 2: All right, Cardinal territory listeners, fans, whatever you call yourselves,
- 10:10Speaker 2: bear with me. We got a segment here from Arena Club.
- 10:12Speaker 2: You know how I am with the technical duties, but
- 10:14Speaker 2: I feel good about it.
- 10:15Speaker 3: You'll do it.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Bit about myself.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Let's let's hear about our We'll call it a player
- 10:21Speaker 2: of the series. He did not play, but it's important
- 10:23Speaker 2: to have an injury update here on Jordan Walker. So
- 10:25Speaker 2: we'll do that, presented by Arena Club. All right, no
- 10:32Speaker 2: pressure or anything. So Jordan Walker, we have an update
- 10:35Speaker 2: with him. He went on the injured list out in
- 10:37Speaker 2: Texas and the Cardinals were hoping to activate him before
- 10:43Speaker 2: or today before the game against the Dodgers. Now that
- 10:47Speaker 2: did not happen, and the reason for that is because
- 10:50Speaker 2: he had a minor setback, had a little bit of
- 10:53Speaker 2: some some soreness in that risk, so he got an
- 10:55Speaker 2: injection earlier in the week, some anti inflammatory injection. So
- 10:58Speaker 2: he was not able to take swings for the last
- 11:00Speaker 2: couple of days. He did take swings today and according to.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Ollie Marble, everything looked good.
- 11:09Speaker 2: There we go, nice Jordan Walker card here from Arena
- 11:12Speaker 2: Club night. So took swings and it sounds like well,
- 11:17Speaker 2: the Cardinals were hoping that he would not have to
- 11:20Speaker 2: uh want to rehab assignment.
- 11:22Speaker 1: He might have to take a couple of days, but
- 11:24Speaker 1: they still don't think it's.
- 11:26Speaker 2: That serious with Jordan Walker. He could be back as
- 11:28Speaker 2: early as the end of next week. So yeah, a
- 11:30Speaker 2: little bit longer than his originally planned injured league st
- 11:34Speaker 2: are injured injured listent, but all things considered, he's respondibilly
- 11:39Speaker 2: well to that shot and should be good to go,
- 11:41Speaker 2: hopefully later in the week. We'll have a better idea
- 11:43Speaker 2: on Tuesday if he does need a rehab assignment.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Obviously, there are no.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Minor league games on Mondays, so the earliest he'd be
- 11:49Speaker 2: able to go out would be Tuesday.
- 11:52Speaker 1: So that's where they're with Jordan Walker.
- 11:53Speaker 2: In the meantime, we've seen a lot of Ryan Belay, honestly, candidly,
- 11:57Speaker 2: a little bit more than I thought we would.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I thought we'd see.
- 12:01Speaker 2: More of Nolan Gorman, and I know that the Cardinals
- 12:03Speaker 2: have faced a lot of lefties, including today Clayton Kershaw.
- 12:07Speaker 2: They had two lefties in the doubleheader against Kansas City.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I'm a little disappointed in the lack of playing time
- 12:13Speaker 2: we've seen from Nolan.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Gorman so far.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I hope with the stretch of right handers coming up
- 12:16Speaker 2: that we'll be able to see more of him because
- 12:18Speaker 2: I thought he actually took some really good at bats
- 12:20Speaker 2: and some really good swings, So we'll see something I.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Really liked about Nolan Gorman.
- 12:26Speaker 2: And you can see these in the swings, even if
- 12:28Speaker 2: they don't really amount to contact at the moment.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Is watch his front stride.
- 12:33Speaker 2: It's way less in front, his hip is flying less out,
- 12:37Speaker 2: it's more in control. He told me he's been working
- 12:39Speaker 2: on this since the series in Kansas City, where he's
- 12:41Speaker 2: trying to limit that French stride and limit the amount
- 12:43Speaker 2: of motion in the front and stay more at level,
- 12:46Speaker 2: and he feels like he feels like it's really helping.
- 12:48Speaker 2: He had a textbook swing and the ninth inning to
- 12:50Speaker 2: lead off for that Grandmial double that ultimately won the game,
- 12:54Speaker 2: and I think that's.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The swing he's trying to replicate.
- 12:56Speaker 2: So while we don't like this for Jordan Walker, fully
- 13:00Speaker 2: this does ley for more playing time for Nolan Gorman
- 13:02Speaker 2: this week. I don't really know what we need to
- 13:03Speaker 2: see out of Ryan Blade. He's done a nice job.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I thought he'd be a twenty six man, not a starter.
- 13:08Speaker 2: So hopefully we'll see some playing time more in Nolan
- 13:11Speaker 2: Gorman's favor. But yeah, thanks to Arena Club. We can
- 13:14Speaker 2: talk about it and you go sign up to Arena Club.
- 13:17Speaker 2: We'll go up and rip up on one of their
- 13:19Speaker 2: slap packs right now. Don't know what card we're gonna get.
- 13:22Speaker 2: We'll see. Suspense is building? Oh, Tony great?
- 13:28Speaker 1: Saw him?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Okay, I'm actually disappointed. I wanted to see an Otani
- 13:33Speaker 2: Homer so bad.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Is that too much to ask? Is that what?
- 13:36Speaker 2: That too much to ask for this weekend? I just
- 13:38Speaker 2: for for the optics alone. I know it's not what
- 13:40Speaker 2: we should be rooting for, but I wanted to see
- 13:42Speaker 2: an a Tani Homer.
- 13:43Speaker 1: That thing is magical. Give people what they.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Want it is it is? Hey. By the way, Otani
- 13:48Speaker 3: and Freeman in this series against Cardinals five for twenty four,
- 13:52Speaker 3: how about that?
- 13:53Speaker 1: That is about that?
- 13:56Speaker 3: May I chime in on behalf of an Arena Club
- 13:58Speaker 3: with something that's totally to what you were talking about?
- 14:01Speaker 3: May I ask because I'm a huge fan of Arena Club.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I think it's great. All right? Listen, Jordan Walker was
- 14:08Speaker 3: starting to hit. He was starting to becoming an increasingly
- 14:11Speaker 3: important member of that lineup now, and this ties into
- 14:17Speaker 3: who was playing. Who was the Aufner you mentioned Latti, Yeah,
- 14:20Speaker 3: I say his name wrong. So that's why I've been
- 14:22Speaker 3: insecure about that. All right. Here, here's why this is
- 14:26Speaker 3: all intertwined. You know, not enough at bats for Gorman,
- 14:30Speaker 3: Walker being injured, having to rely on you know, a
- 14:33Speaker 3: kind of a triple a quadruple a player to start
- 14:37Speaker 3: games in the right field. I think other teams realize
- 14:42Speaker 3: the Cardinals are really heavy with left handed hitters. Right,
- 14:46Speaker 3: So the Cardinals have had going into today, They've had
- 14:51Speaker 3: it today, won't change it because Kershaw is great. The
- 14:54Speaker 3: Cardinals have had the third most played appearances against left
- 14:57Speaker 3: handed pitching this year, and they are twenty sixth in
- 15:01Speaker 3: the number of plate appearances against right handed pitching. And
- 15:05Speaker 3: the Cardinals as a team, because of all the lefty
- 15:07Speaker 3: bats are you know, frankly are below the numbers say
- 15:11Speaker 3: they are below average against left handed pitching, and they
- 15:14Speaker 3: are very healthily above average against right handed pitching. So
- 15:18Speaker 3: it isn't a matter of like, oh, I hope Walker
- 15:20Speaker 3: can do, but you know they need Walker because he
- 15:22Speaker 3: can make a difference because I was surprised to see
- 15:26Speaker 3: Maybe I shouldn't be surprised that they were so, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 3: so mediocre against left handed pitching this year and they're
- 15:31Speaker 3: seeing a lot of it. It all makes sense because
- 15:35Speaker 3: they just have that heavy population of left handed hitters.
- 15:38Speaker 2: They do, and I think you're seeing some of that
- 15:41Speaker 2: across the board. Some you know, Burlison can mash and
- 15:44Speaker 2: Righty's not too great against lefties. Victor Scott going through
- 15:47Speaker 2: some struggles right now, specificly against lefties.
- 15:49Speaker 1: So it does make sense.
- 15:50Speaker 2: But that was our player to watch, or player of
- 15:52Speaker 2: the series, our player to monitor over the next week.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Jordan Walker presented by Arena Club. You can twenty percent
- 16:00Speaker 2: off your first slap pack or card purchase by going
- 16:03Speaker 2: to Arena club dot com slash foul and use code foul.
- 16:07Speaker 2: That's Arena Club dot com slash foul, code foul for
- 16:10Speaker 2: twenty percent off your first purchase.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Nicely done, a lot of pressure. I would say that
- 16:20Speaker 3: was a very highly, highly professional presentation, and then I
- 16:24Speaker 3: kind of jumped in with I'm going to use an
- 16:26Speaker 3: old school reference here. I'm old what do you want
- 16:30Speaker 3: me to say? And then then I kind of jumped
- 16:33Speaker 3: in doing the Ed McMahon thing to your Johnny Carson,
- 16:35Speaker 3: So I hope, I know I wanted. I wanted. I
- 16:38Speaker 3: wanted to help our arena club segment.
- 16:41Speaker 2: No, they're a great sponsor, and I think it's really cool.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I might have told the story already. I don't know,
- 16:47Speaker 2: but I ripped open a trading card pack for the
- 16:50Speaker 2: first time in a very long time. Pulo Sencio Cardinals,
- 16:53Speaker 2: Spanish radio broadcaster, and I were going to seven eleven
- 16:56Speaker 2: before a game and they just had these these packs
- 16:59Speaker 2: and I was like, I haven't seen them, like just
- 17:02Speaker 2: available out to buy. Anyway, I pulled a twenty twenty
- 17:06Speaker 2: two Stephen matt In a twenty twenty two Eric Fetti
- 17:08Speaker 2: and they asked me. I told both of them I
- 17:10Speaker 2: was very excited about it, and they were like, it's
- 17:12Speaker 2: probably worth the combined two dollars.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Said, okay, probably, but no, rita club really cool way,
- 17:16Speaker 1: a real modern way to keep up with with trading cards.
- 17:20Speaker 1: That's a really fun part of the game. So I
- 17:23Speaker 1: like them. I think it's fun.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Now.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Something else I thought was really fun was watching Michael
- 17:27Speaker 2: mcgreeby today. As we know, I'm cardinal territory. This is
- 17:29Speaker 2: a pro Michael McGreevy podcast. Yes, and I thought his
- 17:33Speaker 2: outing today I actually had zero issue with.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I know, the line isn't like super great.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Six innings, four or runs, eight hits, no walk, So
- 17:40Speaker 2: got to like that five strikeouts.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Threw one hundred and one pitches.
- 17:43Speaker 2: But it was the way that the outing came together
- 17:45Speaker 2: that I thought was super encouraging. He comes out first
- 17:48Speaker 2: pitch of the game, one hundred and six mile power
- 17:50Speaker 2: laser off of Battle of Tani, standing on second base.
- 17:52Speaker 1: All right, here's your test.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Ollie Marmel said before the game that this would be
- 17:56Speaker 2: a really good test for Michael mcgreeby because of the
- 17:59Speaker 2: amount of lefties in the Dogger's lineup. But yeah, when
- 18:02Speaker 2: you have lefties like Otanni and Freddie Freeman, that certainly
- 18:05Speaker 2: checks out. So he goes out there. In the first
- 18:07Speaker 2: eleven batters, he faced eight registered exit bulows of ninety
- 18:11Speaker 2: five miles per hour or higher. He was getting rocked.
- 18:14Speaker 2: It led to a three to zero deficit by the
- 18:18Speaker 2: second inning. Could have been a lot worse if not
- 18:20Speaker 2: for an estellar play by Mason Winn and the favorable
- 18:22Speaker 2: outcome for replay review.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I kind of thought Conturers was off the bag. But yeah, oops.
- 18:28Speaker 1: And then here's what I really liked about the outing.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Bernie McGreevy had a mid game adjustment, came out in
- 18:35Speaker 2: the third inning, switched it up, kept his same mindset though,
- 18:38Speaker 2: didn't panic, just executed differently and allowed oneer and run
- 18:41Speaker 2: over his last four innings offer fifty five mile per
- 18:43Speaker 2: hour like Swibbler off the bat of Tommy Edmund, and
- 18:47Speaker 2: everything played up. The whips played up, the execution played up,
- 18:50Speaker 2: the hard contact was down, and he found a way
- 18:53Speaker 2: not only to mitigate the damage, but stay in this
- 18:56Speaker 2: ballgame for six innings to relieve a very tax bullpen.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I thought that was well. Of course, the Cardinals didn't
- 19:03Speaker 2: get the win. That's the ultimate goal. That's a huge
- 19:05Speaker 2: test from a greevy and where he's at in his
- 19:07Speaker 2: development and where he can adjust at the big league level.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Being able to do so and get such good results
- 19:12Speaker 2: that to me is super super encouraging.
- 19:14Speaker 3: No, you're absolutely right. Listen, and all pitching performances, especially
- 19:18Speaker 3: by starters, should be we should always put it into
- 19:22Speaker 3: proper context. I mean, the Dodgers came to town, and
- 19:26Speaker 3: even though the Cardinals did an incredible job of limiting
- 19:29Speaker 3: them in the first two games. The Dodgers came to town,
- 19:32Speaker 3: and the reasons for some of their losing ways ninety
- 19:36Speaker 3: eight percent of it is pitching. Lack of pitching depth.
- 19:39Speaker 3: They came to town basically ranked first or second in
- 19:42Speaker 3: the majors in everything offensively. I mean, it's just like
- 19:45Speaker 3: just a scary deep lineup. So you have McGreevy who
- 19:49Speaker 3: is really very much in experience at the major league level,
- 19:53Speaker 3: and like you said, they were hitting rockets and it
- 19:56Speaker 3: started off pretty rough, very loudly for him to make
- 20:02Speaker 3: to not fall apart, not get rattled, and to calmly
- 20:06Speaker 3: make adjustments on the fly and to shut them down
- 20:08Speaker 3: for what did you say, four more innings after that.
- 20:11Speaker 3: I mean that that's a victory within a loss, if
- 20:16Speaker 3: that makes sense.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Oh, is that a great way to put it.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Because that really it was a victory because he saved
- 20:21Speaker 3: the bullpen with Toronto coming in. But it was a
- 20:23Speaker 3: victory also because he earned credibility even though he's the
- 20:27Speaker 3: losing picture in the game. He earned credibility as a
- 20:30Speaker 3: young starter because he was a total pro. It's like, Okay,
- 20:33Speaker 3: these are the Dodgers they're getting wax, I better change
- 20:37Speaker 3: some things up and approach this different, and he did.
- 20:40Speaker 3: This is a kid, I mean, this isn't an experienced
- 20:42Speaker 3: major league starting pitcher. So I was very impressed by
- 20:46Speaker 3: the way he adjusted on the fly.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Same and this is how we evaluate under Kiwante might
- 20:51Speaker 2: be liberatory, right, if their starts are going walking to
- 20:53Speaker 2: begin the outing, how do they adjust? And you know,
- 20:56Speaker 2: Livy especially has been able to do a really nice
- 20:58Speaker 2: job of that. But with macgree this is the first
- 21:00Speaker 2: time that we really seen him at the major league
- 21:02Speaker 2: level have to do that, and that game could have
- 21:04Speaker 2: gotten really out of hand. I mean, it could have
- 21:05Speaker 2: been six seven, nothing after three innings if he didn't
- 21:08Speaker 2: do that. So that to me shows where he is
- 21:11Speaker 2: as an early major league caliber starter. Look, I know
- 21:15Speaker 2: Michael McGreevey does not have anything left to prove in Memphis.
- 21:19Speaker 1: He should be on the major league club.
- 21:20Speaker 2: We all know this. The Cardinals know this, he knows this,
- 21:24Speaker 2: we know why he's not. And we're not going to
- 21:25Speaker 2: rehash the say margament we had alive spring training because
- 21:27Speaker 2: I do. While I don't lug it, I do understand it,
- 21:30Speaker 2: and I do ultimately think it's the right call for
- 21:33Speaker 2: the organization. But in terms of what's next for Michael mcgreeby,
- 21:39Speaker 2: I can see him taking his immediate.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Future at least one more spot start this month.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be any time in
- 21:45Speaker 2: the next week or so, because the Cardinals on June
- 21:47Speaker 2: sixteenth have their one off day this month, so there
- 21:51Speaker 2: is a way to keep the projected five your five
- 21:54Speaker 2: starters on.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Their six day schedule using that off day.
- 21:57Speaker 2: But after that off day, the next scheduled off day
- 21:59Speaker 2: is not July third, So I believe this is my speculation, but.
- 22:03Speaker 1: It makes sense somewhere.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Between June sixteenth and July third, we will see Michael
- 22:07Speaker 2: McGreevy in the same role again, the same spot start.
- 22:09Speaker 2: But to me, it seems like the Cardinals that's how
- 22:12Speaker 2: they're gonna use him, that's how they're gonna keep him
- 22:13Speaker 2: in the majors.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Doesn't mean he's gonna be on the major league roster
- 22:15Speaker 1: all the time.
- 22:16Speaker 2: In fact, I would not be surprised if he's optioned
- 22:18Speaker 2: on Monday just to bring in a new bullpen arm.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Because the Cardinals aren't spots of through fifty pitches right,
- 22:23Speaker 2: They'll be down to six bullpen arms.
- 22:24Speaker 1: That's not gonna fly.
- 22:26Speaker 2: So if the Cardinals do option McGreevy tomorrow, I still
- 22:30Speaker 2: think we see him at least one more time this
- 22:32Speaker 2: month and then who knows from there. But again, McGreevy
- 22:35Speaker 2: doesn't have anything to prove in the minors.
- 22:37Speaker 1: He should be at the majors. He's not right now
- 22:39Speaker 1: because of the lack of depth issue.
- 22:41Speaker 2: But I think the way that they're using him right now,
- 22:43Speaker 2: they're alling Marble and Dusty Blake, are finding ways where
- 22:46Speaker 2: he can come help them win.
- 22:48Speaker 1: It's smart and hopefully.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Soon well not hopefully soon, because I would mean someone
- 22:53Speaker 2: is hurt, but hopefully we'll get to see Michael McGreevy
- 22:56Speaker 2: in some capacity as a regular starter going forward right now,
- 23:00Speaker 2: although using him as a spots start I think makes
- 23:01Speaker 2: sense for all parties, including McGreevy, and I'm excited to
- 23:04Speaker 2: see what he does when he does take that next one,
- 23:06Speaker 2: or whenever that is.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you this because I'm curious, and
- 23:10Speaker 3: I know everyone watching us, listening to us, and thank
- 23:14Speaker 3: you very much. As always, I know that this is
- 23:17Speaker 3: on the minds of the masses. So let me ask
- 23:19Speaker 3: you this. How long do they stay with Polante. He's
- 23:23Speaker 3: got a five eight er eight his last night starts.
- 23:26Speaker 3: More problematic than that, I don't have the stats. I
- 23:28Speaker 3: ask people to trust me because I'm all over this stuff.
- 23:31Speaker 3: He is. He is statistically one of the worst pitchers
- 23:35Speaker 3: in the major leagues starting pitching the major leagues. In
- 23:38Speaker 3: his performance against right handed batters, they're just crushing them.
- 23:42Speaker 3: He's almost I'm going to I'm gonna exaggerate it, but
- 23:45Speaker 3: he at times he's almost defenseless against them. If that continues,
- 23:49Speaker 3: how how long can you stick with that because you
- 23:52Speaker 3: face a lot of right handed hitters. You know you can't.
- 23:55Speaker 3: There's no way for him to duck right handed batters
- 23:57Speaker 3: right The numbers are terrible and they are what they are.
- 24:01Speaker 3: And then there's a also, Matthew Libator, And I'm gonna
- 24:05Speaker 3: get differ to you on this one because you were
- 24:07Speaker 3: down there talking to everybody. But I'm glad that what
- 24:11Speaker 3: appeared to be a big time scare the Cardinals are
- 24:14Speaker 3: minimizing and saying everything's fine. Libby said, everything's fine, But
- 24:18Speaker 3: I think we all want to see evidence of that,
- 24:20Speaker 3: you know, not that anybody's lying, not that anybody's lying.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I really don't think anyone's think so. But still his
- 24:28Speaker 3: next time out, you know you were going to be wondering, Okay,
- 24:31Speaker 3: what's up? Is he going to get in sync this
- 24:32Speaker 3: time or is he going to maintain his velocity? So
- 24:35Speaker 3: my point is there are Polonte, especially, there's a rotation
- 24:40Speaker 3: spot that is very wobbly right now. And Polonte starts
- 24:43Speaker 3: against the Blue Jays tomorrow night, He's scheduled to very
- 24:47Speaker 3: very wobbly. So to play the devil's advocate, how could
- 24:51Speaker 3: they stay with him if nothing gets better? When they
- 24:54Speaker 3: have a guy like McGreevy who's earned a lot of
- 24:56Speaker 3: respect up here already, but keeping him down, Like, at
- 25:01Speaker 3: what point do they reconsider that? Do you think this
- 25:04Speaker 3: is a.
- 25:05Speaker 2: It's a great question because this brings our theme of
- 25:07Speaker 2: the year, runway verse results back into play. If you're
- 25:10Speaker 2: playing for results right now on June eighth, which there's
- 25:13Speaker 2: honestly not really that much of a reason to I
- 25:15Speaker 2: think maybe you're having a different discussion. But this season,
- 25:18Speaker 2: for as successful as the Cardinals have been in the
- 25:20Speaker 2: win loss column, remains focused on Runway. So they're going
- 25:24Speaker 2: to give onre Polante an extended look. They're same with
- 25:26Speaker 2: Matthew Libert where we know this and that meant good
- 25:29Speaker 2: or bad.
- 25:30Speaker 1: He's staying in.
- 25:31Speaker 2: The rotation because we need to figure out what he has. So, yes,
- 25:34Speaker 2: the last month for Polante has not been great. It's
- 25:36Speaker 2: been frustrating. He's frustrated about it. We saw the results
- 25:40Speaker 2: in a it was Texas, right, all the day, all
- 25:43Speaker 2: the time, one together. Okay, we saw the results in
- 25:45Speaker 2: Texas and no, do you know he's not happy with that.
- 25:48Speaker 2: But for the Cardinals, is it really fair for Polante's
- 25:51Speaker 2: long term career and what they need from him long
- 25:54Speaker 2: term to yank him after a month?
- 25:56Speaker 1: Probably not. It's it's complicated because it's pitcher.
- 26:00Speaker 2: You get one start every five six days, and very
- 26:04Speaker 2: much the team result hinges on how a starting pitcher does.
- 26:06Speaker 1: So I understand that.
- 26:08Speaker 2: But in a season that was designated about runway and opportunity,
- 26:12Speaker 2: they're going to continue giving Polante some until they have
- 26:15Speaker 2: to make a choice between runway and results.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Right now, they still don't have to.
- 26:19Speaker 3: The one thing I would say is that you know,
- 26:22Speaker 3: earlier in his career, you know, when he came up
- 26:24Speaker 3: to the Cardinals. One of the reasons why they liked
- 26:26Speaker 3: him in the bullpen a first because he was very
- 26:28Speaker 3: good against left handed batters, but they also realized that
- 26:32Speaker 3: he was ironically, because he's a righty pitcher, he was
- 26:35Speaker 3: vulnerable to right handed batters. And for a time they
- 26:39Speaker 3: kind of fixed that. In fact, was when he took over,
- 26:42Speaker 3: when he got a rotation spot. From May twenty ninth
- 26:44Speaker 3: to the end of the season last year, he did
- 26:47Speaker 3: a nice job of neutralizing right handed batters. They did
- 26:50Speaker 3: some damage, but it wasn't like it was a route.
- 26:52Speaker 3: It wasn't like they were beating him up. So I'm
- 26:54Speaker 3: not sure what's happened here. They're killing his four seam fastball.
- 26:57Speaker 3: I did a lot of numbers on that. Just trust me,
- 27:00Speaker 3: they're killing his four seam fastball. But this year, because
- 27:04Speaker 3: I looked it up, Yeah, I can multitask, even doing
- 27:09Speaker 3: live believe, even doing a live recording right handed batters.
- 27:12Speaker 3: This year, hitting three hundred with a three sixty four
- 27:15Speaker 3: on base percentage and a four ninety six slug eight
- 27:20Speaker 3: sixty oh ps, six home runs, five doubles in a
- 27:23Speaker 3: triple and he acts and he also walks. He doesn't
- 27:27Speaker 3: get much swing missing strikeout against him because they're just
- 27:31Speaker 3: crushing his four seam fastball. So my only thing is
- 27:34Speaker 3: that he sort of went through this earlier. And I
- 27:37Speaker 3: definitely get your point about the runway, and he had
- 27:40Speaker 3: to show this year that he could do what he
- 27:43Speaker 3: did last year because he was a very pleasant surprise
- 27:45Speaker 3: last year. So I'm just wondering He's like, this is
- 27:48Speaker 3: a this is a question for Dusty Blake. But I'll
- 27:51Speaker 3: ask ally about a Tuesday when he's on KMOX, what
- 27:53Speaker 3: is it noon on Tuesday? I'll ask him, you know,
- 27:56Speaker 3: what is it about Palante where he that's where he's
- 28:01Speaker 3: sort of back to where he began in a way
- 28:03Speaker 3: where he's so vulnerable against right handed batters, because that's
- 28:05Speaker 3: a big problem.
- 28:07Speaker 2: I think it's a fair question and we'll see that.
- 28:08Speaker 2: We'll see that with Polante. There's early yes tomorrow against
- 28:11Speaker 2: the Blue Jays. Again they've had.
- 28:13Speaker 1: They've been on a year lately, so it should be
- 28:16Speaker 1: a good test for Polante. We'll see where he's going.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I get why this is a question, and I don't
- 28:23Speaker 2: disagree with the sentiments behind it, but also just knowing
- 28:26Speaker 2: how the organization is thinking and knowing the overall point
- 28:29Speaker 2: of this season was to figure out what you have
- 28:31Speaker 2: long term if Libby was struggling like this after a month,
- 28:35Speaker 2: would we be having the same conversation.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Probably not.
- 28:38Speaker 2: And I think while Polanate has had an extended role
- 28:39Speaker 2: as a starter much longer than Libby, it's still the
- 28:42Speaker 2: same sentiment.
- 28:43Speaker 1: It's still we need to see what he is.
- 28:44Speaker 2: We need to give them the opportunity to bounce back
- 28:46Speaker 2: and figure things out at the major league level, because
- 28:48Speaker 2: I too say similar with the Greevy, don't think Polante
- 28:51Speaker 2: has anything left to prove in Triple A. I don't
- 28:54Speaker 2: think we know who he is as a Triple A pitcher.
- 28:57Speaker 2: We need to know who he is as a major
- 28:58Speaker 2: league pitcher, and part of that is figuring out how
- 29:00Speaker 2: to make those adjustments when things aren't going well, Very
- 29:03Speaker 2: similar to offensive players.
- 29:04Speaker 1: So that's where I think there are Burnie out. We'renna
- 29:07Speaker 1: come back to you with one more segment.
- 29:08Speaker 3: Good good discussion, good discussion.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Yeah I like that one because I can see both
- 29:12Speaker 1: sides of it. But we'll do one more. We'll get
- 29:13Speaker 1: you ready for the Blue Jay Series. After a quick
- 29:15Speaker 1: message from Arena Club, I just want to.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Say before Arena Club, if you were trying to very
- 29:20Speaker 4: actively buy sell trade, it was very complicated and used
- 29:25Speaker 4: a lot of mail that was unnecessary.
- 29:27Speaker 5: I don't know I even know how to do it,
- 29:28Speaker 5: but I'm glad we have Arena Club now because it's
- 29:30Speaker 5: a one stop shop for everything card related.
- 29:32Speaker 4: It is, and right now you can get twenty percent
- 29:34Speaker 4: off your first slab pack or your first card purchase
- 29:37Speaker 4: by going to Arena club dot com. Slash foul, use
- 29:41Speaker 4: code foul. If you're a collector, you've got to check
- 29:44Speaker 4: out Arena Club. Go get after it.
- 29:49Speaker 2: You heard them, go get after it all right, Bernie.
- 29:51Speaker 2: As we're heading to another week, we'll have three against
- 29:54Speaker 2: the Blue Jays and then four in Milwaukee, my favorite
- 29:57Speaker 2: road city.
- 29:58Speaker 1: You can't wait for that? What are you looking at?
- 30:00Speaker 2: What's what's as a player that you're monitoring Nolan Gorman?
- 30:05Speaker 3: And again I say that without looking ahead to seeing
- 30:08Speaker 3: who the Blue Jays are scheduled to start uh in
- 30:11Speaker 3: the series. But Nolan Gorman has been doing really, really,
- 30:16Speaker 3: really well. I mean, whether you want to talk about
- 30:19Speaker 3: his last ten or eleven games, but his numbers are
- 30:21Speaker 3: very good and he's had some big hits. How many
- 30:24Speaker 3: times you and I have talked about this here on
- 30:27Speaker 3: Cardinal Territory, He has made major, major improvement in his
- 30:31Speaker 3: plate discipline. Strike out total down, chase rate way down,
- 30:35Speaker 3: swinging mis rate way down. And he had to slow
- 30:38Speaker 3: up his bat a little bit, not to be so
- 30:40Speaker 3: jumpy and ferocious. He had just stay within himself to
- 30:43Speaker 3: make that plate discipline work. So he wasn't really doing
- 30:47Speaker 3: a lot of damage. But now he's starting to. He's
- 30:50Speaker 3: starting to take what he learned with Brent Brown about
- 30:53Speaker 3: plate discipline and the way he's got to approach his
- 30:55Speaker 3: at bats. But now the bang is starting to come.
- 30:59Speaker 3: Now the are starting to come, and I think especially
- 31:02Speaker 3: with this offense at times sagging a little bit, they
- 31:05Speaker 3: need they need, you know, an infusion or a transfusion,
- 31:08Speaker 3: whatever the proper word is there. They need another guy.
- 31:12Speaker 3: They just need another guy to start, you know, cranking
- 31:15Speaker 3: some big hits and hitting for power. And Jordan Walker,
- 31:19Speaker 3: you know, was he had found a lot. He had
- 31:22Speaker 3: found a lot, and he was still striking out too much,
- 31:24Speaker 3: but boy was he just blasting baseballs. So Gorman is
- 31:27Speaker 3: starting to do that now. And that's a pretty scary
- 31:30Speaker 3: thought for opponents if if these two guys get going
- 31:33Speaker 3: at the same time. So Gorman's first up, while we
- 31:35Speaker 3: wait for Walker to get back. And uh, this is
- 31:38Speaker 3: a big week for the Cardinals. They all are because
- 31:40Speaker 3: Toronto's a good club, Milwaukee has been on a roll,
- 31:44Speaker 3: and they're getting pitching back so these and it's a
- 31:48Speaker 3: four game series, which are always tough. So I'm really
- 31:51Speaker 3: curious to see how this will play out this week
- 31:54Speaker 3: because it's going to be an interesting week. If the
- 31:56Speaker 3: Cardinals go three and four, No, I'm not going to
- 32:00Speaker 3: be I won't be sitting here next week and saying, oh,
- 32:03Speaker 3: well see they they can't sustain theirs And I'm not
- 32:07Speaker 3: going to overreact to that. Well maybe if they go
- 32:09Speaker 3: one and.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Six and six we can never react.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Yeah, deal, But it's like this is the Cardinals have
- 32:16Speaker 3: so many checkpoints and this is another one. And it's
- 32:18Speaker 3: not that I doubt that they're a good team, because
- 32:20Speaker 3: we talked about that they are a good team and
- 32:22Speaker 3: their record against other good teams shows that. But the
- 32:27Speaker 3: Cardinals all season long, locally and nationally, people are going
- 32:31Speaker 3: to be keeping an eye on. I'm still wondering if
- 32:34Speaker 3: it's for real.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's fair because of the hole that they
- 32:38Speaker 2: put themselves in two seasons ago, because of their weird
- 32:40Speaker 2: ass off season because of their transition plan. I'm not
- 32:44Speaker 2: saying I get it, again, I do I get it.
- 32:46Speaker 2: I would probably feel a little bit of the same
- 32:47Speaker 2: way if I was a fan. But seeing this team
- 32:49Speaker 2: every day, seeing the buy in, which I know is
- 32:51Speaker 2: like kind of a tired cliche phase a phrase.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But I wouldn't say it if I didn't see it.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Seeing the work that Alling Marble is done, seeing the
- 32:57Speaker 2: clubhouse get behind him, and seeing most importantly, these young
- 33:01Speaker 2: players start to believe in themselves. I mean it's it
- 33:06Speaker 2: gives me optimism that this summer might be a lot
- 33:08Speaker 2: more fun than we envisioned.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Also, is that a younger hat?
- 33:11Speaker 3: It is? Yeah, you told me.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I would have worn my younger shirt. We could have matched.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Because I you know, I know some people say, what
- 33:17Speaker 3: is a senior citizen man wearing a younger Yet well,
- 33:20Speaker 3: first of all, I'm not young, but I am hungry
- 33:22Speaker 3: because all I do is say I'm so hungry, and
- 33:25Speaker 3: I'm literally physically hungry too. Spaghetti's waiting downstairs. But but no,
- 33:31Speaker 3: But but also I got this like timing because Victor
- 33:34Speaker 3: Scott's really struggling right now. I'm not turning on them, see,
- 33:39Speaker 3: but I just don't believe.
- 33:40Speaker 1: So that's my pick.
- 33:42Speaker 2: That's actually who I'm picking to watch this next week
- 33:44Speaker 2: because the ups and downs are going to come offensively,
- 33:48Speaker 2: especially with Victor, who you know, never really profiled as
- 33:50Speaker 2: an offense for a centerfielder. His glove is going to
- 33:52Speaker 2: earn him plain time every single day. There is going
- 33:54Speaker 2: to be no optioning Victor Scott to Memphis. As many
- 33:58Speaker 2: of you have decided to DM me on Twitter if
- 34:00Speaker 2: you're gonna if you plan on dming me that, do
- 34:01Speaker 2: yourself a favor, don't. There was not gonna be a
- 34:04Speaker 2: diminished playing time of Victor Scott as he struggles through this.
- 34:07Speaker 1: This is part of the plan.
- 34:08Speaker 2: This is part of the transition season, part of your
- 34:10Speaker 2: favorite buzzwords of the year. He is supposed to struggle
- 34:13Speaker 2: and figure it out. Same thing with Walker. It was
- 34:16Speaker 2: a brutal three weeks and then he started figuring things out.
- 34:19Speaker 2: You're starting to see the light hopefully with Nolan Gorman.
- 34:21Speaker 2: So same things apply with Victor Scott. The second how
- 34:24Speaker 2: is he going to adjust to players making adjustments to
- 34:26Speaker 2: him and so on and so forth.
- 34:29Speaker 1: It is that's.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Baseball, you guys, and we're just gonna see it we're
- 34:32Speaker 2: seeing it a lot because there are so many young
- 34:33Speaker 2: players on this roster, but that's the whole point.
- 34:36Speaker 3: The other thing is like, again, I agree, listen, it's
- 34:39Speaker 3: it's a weird season because yeah, you know they're gonna
- 34:43Speaker 3: they're gonna keep the runway in place, and they should.
- 34:45Speaker 3: That was the whole main objective of the season. So
- 34:49Speaker 3: the Cardinals better than a lot of people thought. So
- 34:52Speaker 3: now there's we all have to fight these impulses to like, oh,
- 34:55Speaker 3: you got to send this guy down, or you know,
- 34:57Speaker 3: you gotta bench this guy if he's off to a
- 35:00Speaker 3: as a bad couple of weeks. It's just not going
- 35:02Speaker 3: to happen. And some people say, well they benched Gorman,
- 35:05Speaker 3: they didn't Bence Gorman is more more more along the
- 35:08Speaker 3: lines of Burlesson deserved more playing time than he did.
- 35:11Speaker 3: And also just again, they see so much left handed
- 35:15Speaker 3: pitching that works against Gorman's bid for playing time. But
- 35:19Speaker 3: now some people would argue, and I think I would
- 35:21Speaker 3: be one of them. But if you ever want him,
- 35:23Speaker 3: if this this is major League Baseball knows you're top
- 35:26Speaker 3: heavy with left handed hitters. You can't hide a guy
- 35:30Speaker 3: that can be an impact hitter. He how is he
- 35:32Speaker 3: ever Gorman, how is he ever going to get better
- 35:35Speaker 3: against lefty pitchers unless he faces them? You know, that's
- 35:38Speaker 3: a great right, you know. So the runway is going
- 35:42Speaker 3: to be in place. And I would also I would
- 35:45Speaker 3: also say this, and I know that we have all
- 35:49Speaker 3: not me because I'm being sarcastic. Now we've all turned
- 35:52Speaker 3: Thomas to Jayce into Rogers hornsby Okay, Like I'm surprised
- 35:56Speaker 3: they don't have the hall of fame like the Bronze
- 35:58Speaker 3: Bust outside the state him yet you know, just settle
- 36:03Speaker 3: down on that. That's my thing because his time's coming.
- 36:06Speaker 3: His time is coming. But it's really hard to sort
- 36:10Speaker 3: of have it all, like, you know, you can't when's
- 36:13Speaker 3: going to be the shortstop every day? Gorman will play
- 36:15Speaker 3: third when Aronatto can't. Uh, Donovan is really good at
- 36:20Speaker 3: second base, second here, So if j C was a
- 36:24Speaker 3: corner outfielder or he could play center field, I would say, yeah,
- 36:27Speaker 3: get him here. But he's not right. So, you know,
- 36:30Speaker 3: the Cardinals are still the island of misfit toys when
- 36:34Speaker 3: it comes to the roster. There's no question about it.
- 36:37Speaker 3: You know, they's still there, and there's even going to
- 36:40Speaker 3: be more of that coming. When you look at all
- 36:42Speaker 3: the left handed hitters they have in the system making
- 36:44Speaker 3: their way up here, come on Joshua Bias.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Oh, he's going to tear it up.
- 36:49Speaker 5: He's a right handed power bat and he's he is
- 36:53Speaker 5: on all of a sudden, taken off right, and it's
- 36:56Speaker 5: I looked because I want to say, oh, but don't
- 36:58Speaker 5: tell me he's another left handed hitter outfielder, because I
- 37:00Speaker 5: couldn't remember.
- 37:03Speaker 3: This is like two am. This is my life. So
- 37:05Speaker 3: I'm looking at him up last night at two am,
- 37:07Speaker 3: laying in bed, I'm like, oh, my gosh, is he
- 37:09Speaker 3: another left hand edding outfielder. Not that he's going to
- 37:12Speaker 3: be up here, like in an imminent basis, but he's
- 37:15Speaker 3: you know, he now has put himself on a much
- 37:17Speaker 3: faster track. And they got JJ weatherhold coming up, you know,
- 37:20Speaker 3: Chase Davis in the mix somewhere. It's all lefty, lefty, lefty, lefty, lefty.
- 37:24Speaker 3: So the argument for j C is, you know, you
- 37:29Speaker 3: need a better right handed bat than Barrero coming off
- 37:32Speaker 3: the bench. But I just don't see where j C
- 37:35Speaker 3: would get that much playing time. I just don't.
- 37:38Speaker 1: So what's the point.
- 37:39Speaker 3: Yeah, So what's the point, what's Yeah, what's the point
- 37:41Speaker 3: of keeping him in there, keeping him up here to
- 37:43Speaker 3: sit on the bench. And so I'm just sort of
- 37:46Speaker 3: doing a little preemptive strike on the rogers hornsby talk.
- 37:50Speaker 3: You know, we got oh, you got to get you
- 37:51Speaker 3: got to get the next Rogers hornsby up here. You know, No,
- 37:55Speaker 3: actually you don't, you know, because okay, it's okay.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Right now, should be time for Gorman and I hope
- 38:01Speaker 2: we see that, you know you were I mean, do.
- 38:04Speaker 3: People really want to pull the plug on Victor Scott?
- 38:06Speaker 3: Do they really want to pull the plug? How many
- 38:07Speaker 3: people pull the plug on Walker and Gorman? I mean,
- 38:11Speaker 3: we talked, everybody talked about this for months in the offseason,
- 38:15Speaker 3: what this was going to be all about. And just
- 38:18Speaker 3: because they're better and expected, it doesn't mean you just
- 38:20Speaker 3: bury these guys now.
- 38:21Speaker 1: That would be the worst thing. That'd be the worst
- 38:23Speaker 1: thing they could do.
- 38:24Speaker 3: And it's not like they have great options in the
- 38:26Speaker 3: minor leagues either.
- 38:28Speaker 1: They're they're not They're not.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Like, like, look at who they brought up right, No
- 38:32Speaker 3: disrespect to him. I mean, I know he's trying the loatti,
- 38:35Speaker 3: but you know they're starting him every day like me
- 38:38Speaker 3: and Kevin Wheeler of the you know cam Wix. We
- 38:41Speaker 3: were texting each other like, my gosh, he started how
- 38:46Speaker 3: many games in a row now? And Gorman's on the bench,
- 38:48Speaker 3: you know.
- 38:49Speaker 1: So that's that's what I have a little bit of
- 38:51Speaker 1: an issue with.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I would like to see more Gorman and nothing against
- 38:54Speaker 2: Brian whose I just thought he'd be up here as
- 38:57Speaker 2: a twenty six man, right, but you know, he had
- 39:01Speaker 2: a really good at baut today and he did it
- 39:02Speaker 2: was wonderful. That was a very good at bat. So
- 39:04Speaker 2: maybe they'll turn things around. But I would like to
- 39:06Speaker 2: see more of Nolan Gorman this week. So Ollie Marvel,
- 39:09Speaker 2: if you're watching, you're not just no, just not that
- 39:11Speaker 2: someting to ask you about tomorrow for pregame. Uh, speaking
- 39:14Speaker 2: out of the future, we have a lot of fun
- 39:16Speaker 2: things coming up on Cardinal Territory. Both Andre Polante and
- 39:19Speaker 2: Matthew Libertoo are going to join the show early next week,
- 39:21Speaker 2: and Dusty Blake will be our second guest, that's right,
- 39:23Speaker 2: two guest episode week, yes, and then Berniane, I'll be
- 39:27Speaker 2: back with.
- 39:28Speaker 1: You, hopefully after the Brewer series. So let's look forward
- 39:30Speaker 1: to here on the show.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Lots of lots of lots of look forward to in
- 39:34Speaker 2: Cardinal Land as well.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I know, Bernie, and I certainly appreciate your support.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Bernie, got anything any fun projects up on STL Sports Central?
- 39:44Speaker 3: Long story, long long story, short stop. STL dot com
- 39:49Speaker 3: still exists, it's under a different name. There's some station
- 39:52Speaker 3: in radio station in Boston. Because we were using the
- 39:54Speaker 3: turn you know, sports Hub STL, they called themselves the
- 39:59Speaker 3: Hub and some I didn't realize that gave you international
- 40:02Speaker 3: rights to use the PIP.
- 40:03Speaker 2: I don't know, Bernie. I think I know of a
- 40:04Speaker 2: certain other hub that's much more popular.
- 40:06Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, right, So yeah, So
- 40:10Speaker 3: rather than give money to lawyers, Dave Green, who runs
- 40:13Speaker 3: it up, just said we're going to change the name.
- 40:15Speaker 3: And they are actually there. There used to be a
- 40:18Speaker 3: STL Sports Central and people at our place actually own
- 40:22Speaker 3: the name, so they just flipped it to that. So, uh,
- 40:26Speaker 3: five five videos a week, five columns a week for me,
- 40:29Speaker 3: plus I jump in on Randy Characters show, and they
- 40:32Speaker 3: have shorts for my videos. I'm all over the place.
- 40:34Speaker 3: So yeah, thank you thanks for letting me plug that
- 40:37Speaker 3: and let people know where they should go. Don't be
- 40:39Speaker 3: confused by the name.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Change, same same site, different name, but here are Cardinal Territory.
- 40:45Speaker 1: We're gonna stick with you.
- 40:46Speaker 2: And you can read all about Michael McGreevey what's next
- 40:49Speaker 2: for him on the Athletic that will be out tomorrow morning,
- 40:51Speaker 2: Monday morning, and hopefully lots of fun stuff ahead for
- 40:55Speaker 2: the Cardinals. So Bernie, thanks as always for doing this.
- 40:58Speaker 2: I'm going to get out of Bush Stadium. I've been
- 41:00Speaker 2: here for entirely, way too long this week, and I'm
- 41:04Speaker 2: going to go enjoy.
- 41:06Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't even know what's on my agenda.
- 41:07Speaker 1: I'm just so excited to go home. You know.
- 41:09Speaker 3: They turned the light out on you.
- 41:10Speaker 2: I know. I'm actually I don't I don't even think
- 41:12Speaker 2: I'm supposed to be here. I don't Cardinal pr If
- 41:14Speaker 2: you're watching this, sorry, I don't know.
- 41:15Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I just need a quiet place. Yeah, Bernie, Thanks is always.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Courting Territory subscribers.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Thank you. We'll be back with you with Tuesday.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Andre Polante Matthew Libertore two guests of Specials.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Should be a lot of fun. Thanks for watching
