- 0:05Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports for a daily bringing you the
- 0:08Speaker 1: Saturday sports show right here on Radio Folkestone. Well, there's
- 0:20Speaker 1: no AD today as he'll be at Western Supermare commentating
- 0:24Speaker 1: on Folkestone Invictus away game for Seasiders Radio. However, we
- 0:28Speaker 1: do have a busy show as three guests join us
- 0:31Speaker 1: to tell us all about a sporty challenge they completed
- 0:34Speaker 1: earlier on in the year, raising money for action and
- 0:37Speaker 1: medical research. Now, I was hoping it would be the
- 0:40Speaker 1: full team of four, but one of the team is
- 0:43Speaker 1: on Saturday morning children's club taxi duties. So very shortly,
- 0:55Speaker 1: we will introduce them all after a birthday wish to
- 0:58Speaker 1: Mitch Ewer. And Mitch Ewer is 73 today. And Mitch
- 1:02Speaker 1: was the frontman of Ultravox in the 80s. And in 1981,
- 1:07Speaker 1: this track was released as a single and spent four
- 1:10Speaker 1: weeks in at number two in the UK charts. So
- 1:15Speaker 1: sit back and enjoy Ultravox and Vienna. Classic track from
- 2:00Speaker 1: 1981 there, Ultravox, Vienna. Quite a different sound, actually, that one.
- 2:08Speaker 1: It kind of took a lot of people by surprise,
- 2:10Speaker 1: but it stood the test of time. It's still out there. Well,
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm joined in the studio now by three members of
- 2:17Speaker 1: Team Quad Goals. We've got Martin Murray, John Morton and
- 2:20Speaker 1: Eve Gardner. So let's go around the table. Let's say
- 2:23Speaker 1: good morning to Martin. Morning, Martin. How are you?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, morning, Kev. I'm good, thank you.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I know your event was some time ago, but you're
- 2:32Speaker 1: fully recovered. Did it take a lot of recovery after
- 2:34Speaker 1: doing that?
- 2:35Speaker 2: A couple of days.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Did it?
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Okay. We'll describe the event in more detail very shortly.
- 2:43Speaker 1: We want to say good morning to Eve.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Hi.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Good morning, Eve. Morning. That's it. How are you? Are
- 2:49Speaker 1: you all right? Yes, thank you. Okay, good. Well, now,
- 2:52Speaker 1: good morning to John.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Morning, Kev.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Morning, how are you?
- 2:55Speaker 4: Yeah, well, thank you.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say you're probably one of
- 2:58Speaker 1: the fittest blokes around at the moment, still playing rugby,
- 3:01Speaker 1: but you're injured, aren't you?
- 3:02Speaker 4: I am injured, yeah. I got injured a couple of
- 3:04Speaker 4: weeks ago up in Newcastle.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Oh, dear.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Is it a long-term injury?
- 3:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to need an operation.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Oh, are you?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Next week or the week after.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Oh, really? Is that bad, is it?
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I tore my bicep tendon.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Oh.
- 3:14Speaker 4: So that's going to be reattaching.
- 3:17Speaker 1: You was obviously playing at the time.
- 3:18Speaker 4: I was 10 minutes in.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Was you?
- 3:21Speaker 4: 10 minutes in, yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Oh, dear.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Right. That's the whole season gone then, isn't it? Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Is it the career?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Is it the career?
- 3:27Speaker 4: I think it might be.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I think it might be.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Oh, dear. Can't have that. But now, coming back to
- 3:33Speaker 1: you then, Martin. Now, you've been a sporty man and
- 3:36Speaker 1: you still are in your time.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So you played rugby for a long time and then you,
- 3:42Speaker 1: what happened next after your rugby?
- 3:44Speaker 2: I started on the running. Yeah. So I do see
- 3:47Speaker 2: you frequently out there.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Yes, that's right.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Look forward to the shout out to the end of
- 3:50Speaker 2: the race.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, right. So then this event occurred. Now, did it
- 3:57Speaker 1: happen like down the pub one evening when you'd all
- 4:00Speaker 1: been drinking or was it really structured that you should
- 4:02Speaker 1: do this event?
- 4:04Speaker 2: No, I think it did happen at my 40th birthday.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 3: And the girls were talking, and they decided after a
- 4:11Speaker 3: few drinks that this was going to be a good idea.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Okay. So did you then start looking for an event,
- 4:17Speaker 1: or did you have this one in mind?
- 4:20Speaker 2: I think Rachel had it in mind.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Rachel definitely instigated it.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it was definitely Rachel's idea.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Was it?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Well, we blame her because she's not here this morning.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Okay, so for the listeners who are dying to know
- 4:34Speaker 1: what it was, so tell us exactly what you did
- 4:36Speaker 1: on this event.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Well, it was a bit of a triathlon.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So it was a 32 mile bike, two mile kayak
- 4:45Speaker 3: and a nine mile hike just to finish it off.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Right. So quite a full on day. And we're going
- 4:51Speaker 1: to go through the training procedures a little bit later on.
- 4:54Speaker 1: But Eve, hang on a sec, Eve. So Eve, were
- 4:58Speaker 1: you a sporty person, you know, from school and things
- 5:01Speaker 1: like that? Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 6: I play netball and done a bit of running as well.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Oh, good. So when this challenge was sort of thrown out,
- 5:11Speaker 1: was you under the influence as well, or did you think, oh, yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I'm going to go for this?
- 5:14Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I got roped in by Rachel.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Oh, did you?
- 5:16Speaker 6: It seemed like a good idea at the time.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And, I mean, the training, did you suffer in the training?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Because there was, I mean, the kayaking for a start,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I'd like to talk about that.
- 5:26Speaker 6: Well, we didn't actually do any training for that.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I was going to say, did you do any training
- 5:31Speaker 1: for that at all?
- 5:32Speaker 2: No.
- 5:32Speaker 1: No? Okay, so... um you had the bike and did
- 5:35Speaker 1: you all get out on.
- 5:36Speaker 7: The bike yeah got out on the bike did a
- 5:38Speaker 7: few together obviously the logistics of trying to get all
- 5:42Speaker 7: four of us out with kids and life um so
- 5:44Speaker 7: yeah early morning stints out on the bike.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Was yeah yeah okay so the event took place uh
- 5:49Speaker 1: around about july time so excuse me leading up to
- 5:53Speaker 1: it and how was the weather was you still sort
- 5:56Speaker 1: of coming out of these sort of springtime or was
- 5:58Speaker 1: it you have some rainy mornings when you was training.
- 6:00Speaker 7: Um i personally didn't did you boys I think the
- 6:05Speaker 7: weather was okay.
- 6:05Speaker 4: I think it was pretty mild and we were quite fortunate.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Oh, that's good. You are then, because sometimes people train
- 6:11Speaker 1: for the London Marathon, which is in April, train for
- 6:14Speaker 1: the winter. And all of a sudden that April day
- 6:16Speaker 1: is like mega hot and they all suffer. So John,
- 6:19Speaker 1: John come in. So at the time you were, you
- 6:22Speaker 1: were fighting for it, raring to go. I take it. Oh,
- 6:25Speaker 1: you were cycling a natural thing for you or did
- 6:27Speaker 1: you have to go out and buy a bike?
- 6:28Speaker 4: I'm not. No, I had to go out and buy
- 6:29Speaker 4: a bike.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Did you?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 5: I got it through the cycle to work scheme, through work,
- 6:33Speaker 5: went into Halford, picked a hybrid. which done the job.
- 6:37Speaker 5: I think a road bike might have been a little easier,
- 6:39Speaker 5: but the hybrid's a bit more practical long-term.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Yeah, okay. Have you still got it, or have you
- 6:44Speaker 1: kind of put it away after the event?
- 6:45Speaker 4: Oh, no, I've been out on it twice.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Me and Martin went out a month or so ago,
- 6:49Speaker 5: and it chucked down with rain, so it's stayed in
- 6:51Speaker 5: the garage since.
- 6:54Speaker 1: So are you like a fair weather cyclist?
- 6:56Speaker 4: I'm a fair weather everything.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Right, well, we're going to play
- 7:01Speaker 1: a little song now, and then we're going to come
- 7:03Speaker 1: back to these three, because I can feel we've hardly
- 7:05Speaker 1: touched the surface of this morning's interview. So I've got
- 7:09Speaker 1: a little song in here, and really, Julie Wallace. Good morning, Julie.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I'm sure you're listening. Now, a little while ago, we
- 7:15Speaker 1: did a special on your three grandchildren, or Fila, and
- 7:18Speaker 1: we played a couple of their songs back-to-back. First time
- 7:21Speaker 1: I've ever done that. Now, I've been in touch with Matt,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and he's told me that he's got some more songs
- 7:26Speaker 1: that he had on his playlist. The ones I played
- 7:33Speaker 1: were their early ones, but this one was a little
- 7:35Speaker 1: bit later. So I've put another three or four songs
- 7:39Speaker 1: on the playlist. So really, this is for you, Julie.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And this is a later song by Orfila, and this
- 7:44Speaker 1: is called Hit the Ground Running. Pretty powerful song. It's
- 8:10Speaker 1: not like them, actually. I was listening to that a
- 8:12Speaker 1: couple of times during the week, and their early stuff
- 8:16Speaker 1: was more of a lovely, melodic country style, but that's
- 8:20Speaker 1: a real punchy one. That's great. I love it. So
- 8:23Speaker 1: hit the ground running, that's what these three guys did. Well,
- 8:26Speaker 1: I hope they didn't hit the ground, literally. But we're
- 8:28Speaker 1: going to hear how it all went on the day.
- 8:30Speaker 1: First of all, coming back to you, Martin. Now, am
- 8:34Speaker 1: I right in saying this was at the Cheddar Gorge,
- 8:36Speaker 1: this event?
- 8:36Speaker 2: It was, yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And, I mean, that's a pretty fair old drive down
- 8:41Speaker 1: to Somerset there. So what was the logistics? Did you
- 8:44Speaker 1: all go out the day before? Let's just start from
- 8:46Speaker 1: the basic stuff.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, we all went the day before. What?
- 8:52Speaker 3: We had sports day for our kids, Rachel and I.
- 8:55Speaker 3: So we left a lot later than, uh, John and Eve.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 3: We went down a bit earlier and we had a
- 9:01Speaker 3: little like mobile home type thing, um, down.
- 9:05Speaker 2: There for a couple of days. So it was nice.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah. All right.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So had a hot tub. So we needed that for
- 9:10Speaker 2: the recovery. Yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Yes. Um, so I mean, four bikes, well, you took two,
- 9:16Speaker 1: obviously geared up for that with a cycle rack and that.
- 9:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Um, So you got there, was it a Sunday event?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Saturday.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Saturday, so you got there Friday night, was it literally
- 9:28Speaker 1: straight into it Saturday morning then?
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Yeah, right. So early start, were you far from the start?
- 9:32Speaker 3: We were about a mile from the start, so we
- 9:35Speaker 3: cycled down to the start, which meant we had to
- 9:38Speaker 3: cycle back up the hill at the.
- 9:40Speaker 2: End, which wasn't pleasant.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Not the best of things, was it? No.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I think it's like 8 o'clock start in the morning.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yeah, 8 o'clock.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Nice and early.
- 9:52Speaker 1: So you've got four of you in this mobile home thing,
- 9:55Speaker 1: as you call it.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I mean, get any sleep? Nervous?
- 10:00Speaker 2: No, I was not nervous.
- 10:01Speaker 8: No?
- 10:01Speaker 2: No, it's not like rugby. No.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Excuse me. So you cycled down there. So let's just
- 10:09Speaker 1: briefly go through the route. A tough, I could imagine,
- 10:13Speaker 1: tough route on the cycle, was it? Was it a
- 10:17Speaker 1: lot of terrain, a lot of elevation?
- 10:18Speaker 2: A lot of elevation, yeah. Really steep, right from the start.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Was that a shock? I mean, it's quite hilly round here,
- 10:24Speaker 1: but were you training up.
- 10:25Speaker 2: We were training all round the hills.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 2: We'd been out to Etch and Hill quite a few times,
- 10:31Speaker 2: up to Hawkins. Yeah.
- 10:33Speaker 1: But still, it was tough.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, really tough. Was it? Nothing round here prepares you
- 10:37Speaker 2: for it.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Ah, okay. Yeah, yeah. And so the cycle, 32 miles.
- 10:43Speaker 1: How long was that? this event was all in one
- 10:47Speaker 1: day wasn't.
- 10:48Speaker 3: It it was yeah so it's three three hours 47
- 10:51Speaker 3: minutes we've done the cycle yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Right um so let's switch to uh somebody else now
- 10:57Speaker 1: eve come in eve how did you find the cycle
- 11:00Speaker 1: had you been out up and down the tough hills
- 11:02Speaker 1: because you know both families have got young children and
- 11:05Speaker 1: as you say it's a job to get together and
- 11:08Speaker 1: at times probably just mum and dad to get out
- 11:11Speaker 1: together so was your training ready for the uh cheddar
- 11:14Speaker 1: gorge on the bike.
- 11:15Speaker 6: As well yeah as much as it could much as
- 11:17Speaker 6: it could be yeah yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 7: Rach and i did a few spin classes um but
- 11:22Speaker 7: yeah it's not the same as it is.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Yeah but it gives you a bit of core strength
- 11:25Speaker 1: though didn't it yeah i mean there was probably times
- 11:30Speaker 1: uh on that first cycle race where you thought god
- 11:33Speaker 1: i wish i'd never gone to martin's birthday party yeah
- 11:36Speaker 1: was it like that yeah yeah was you cursing him
- 11:39Speaker 1: no not all the way no just a little bit.
- 11:41Speaker 7: Just just his fitness because he powers up them hills yeah.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Yeah i suppose the men to be fair have got
- 11:46Speaker 1: the advantage that um you know they've been doing sort
- 11:49Speaker 1: of heart moving stuff and to get their to get
- 11:52Speaker 1: their strength up and you're perhaps a little bit behind
- 11:54Speaker 1: on that i understand that so john come in and
- 11:58Speaker 1: john um 32 miles on the bike how did you
- 12:01Speaker 1: find that.
- 12:02Speaker 4: It was a challenge but it was quite enjoyable as
- 12:04Speaker 4: well As he said.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Mine's really good. You saying that, sorry to interrupt. What
- 12:09Speaker 1: was the weather like that day?
- 12:10Speaker 4: It was so hot, Geoff.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Was it?
- 12:12Speaker 4: 30 odd degrees. It was roasting.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Oh, dear. It's that extreme, yeah? Yeah, so extra fluids.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I mean, was there water stops along the way or
- 12:22Speaker 1: were you just on your own?
- 12:23Speaker 5: There was, yeah. We took, obviously, water bottles on the
- 12:25Speaker 5: bikes and then there was water stations around. It's hard
- 12:30Speaker 5: because you want to sort of not go too hard
- 12:33Speaker 5: because of the sun but then the longer you're out
- 12:34Speaker 5: in the sun the more it.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Is yeah yeah you want to get a fine balance
- 12:38Speaker 1: yeah yeah yeah was the terrain apart from hilly was
- 12:42Speaker 1: there any shelter were you i've imagined the cheddar gorgeous
- 12:46Speaker 1: high cliffs or was it open countryside at least yeah.
- 12:49Speaker 5: A bit of both it was there was high cliffs
- 12:51Speaker 5: around um you know there's bits where there's mountain goats
- 12:54Speaker 5: climbing up the side just an indication of how high
- 12:56Speaker 5: you are you've got some really lovely views there wasn't
- 13:00Speaker 5: much escape from the sun but it was an odd.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Bit yeah yeah all right okay so did you all
- 13:05Speaker 1: stay together yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 5: We all stayed together and there was bits where sort
- 13:09Speaker 5: of one of us would be struggling so we'd wait
- 13:10Speaker 5: or you know you'd stop to have a drink and
- 13:12Speaker 5: everyone would stop yeah and so yeah we all done
- 13:14Speaker 5: it started finished together.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Right that's good yeah good teamwork and team quad goals
- 13:18Speaker 1: where did that come from team quad is for you.
- 13:20Speaker 5: I think it came from chat gpt i think it
- 13:23Speaker 5: was uh We had a little vote in there. We
- 13:25Speaker 5: had a WhatsApp group and had a vote in there.
- 13:26Speaker 5: We had a few different names. I can't remember what
- 13:28Speaker 5: they were now. But this is what we ended up on.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Right, right. It sounds like a massive event. Were there
- 13:35Speaker 1: many teams from all over the country?
- 13:37Speaker 5: Yeah, there was teams from everywhere. There was three different
- 13:40Speaker 5: waves that started. I think there was about 20 different
- 13:42Speaker 5: teams in each wave. You could be a team of
- 13:43Speaker 5: two or a team of four.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Oh, I see, two or fours.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Were there many fours? Yeah, there was a few.
- 13:50Speaker 4: I think it was more twos than fours, but there
- 13:52Speaker 4: were some fours.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Okay, so Martin, coming back to you. How
- 13:57Speaker 1: did Rachel get on? Unfortunately, she's not with us today,
- 13:59Speaker 1: so we can talk about her as much as we like,
- 14:01Speaker 1: but she's going to hear it anyway, so keep it clean.
- 14:04Speaker 1: So how did Rachel cope? What's her background in the
- 14:07Speaker 1: sporty world?
- 14:10Speaker 2: She's not a very sporty person.
- 14:11Speaker 7: No.
- 14:11Speaker 2: She plays a bit of netball.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Yes.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And that's it.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:15Speaker 2: A little bit of running.
- 14:17Speaker 1: So this was pretty tough for her, wasn't it?
- 14:18Speaker 2: It was a tough, yeah, tough challenge for her, yeah.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Well, how did she cope?
- 14:23Speaker 2: Well, yeah, she's done really, really well.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Um like john said we we tended to stick together
- 14:27Speaker 3: mostly but she did drop off a little bit and
- 14:31Speaker 3: got in behind um another team who were just wearing
- 14:35Speaker 3: um budgie smugglers the team budgie smugglers the speedos team
- 14:41Speaker 3: so yeah i did drop back she stayed there did
- 14:43Speaker 3: she yeah she stayed in there right all the way
- 14:45Speaker 3: up the hill just behind them.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I can't go any faster martin.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah that's it she said they really motivated her i.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Did yeah Took her mind off the cycling, did it?
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Oh, right.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Oh, I love that. So you left her to it
- 14:59Speaker 1: at that time. I mean, to be fair, if you're
- 15:01Speaker 1: not as fit as perhaps you and John, it must
- 15:05Speaker 1: have been that extra burden. But she coped okay?
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah, she'd got out quite a lot with folks in
- 15:12Speaker 2: the cycling club.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 15:14Speaker 3: We'd go on a social ride every Sunday, so she
- 15:16Speaker 3: got out quite a few times with them in preparation
- 15:19Speaker 3: for it.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And juggling it. with the children was that a bit
- 15:22Speaker 1: of a task in itself.
- 15:23Speaker 2: That was hard yeah yeah because only one of us
- 15:25Speaker 2: could be out at.
- 15:26Speaker 1: One time or so you probably never trained with her then.
- 15:29Speaker 2: We trained a couple of times yeah when we got
- 15:31Speaker 2: babysitters yeah yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 1: All right okay so uh we're gonna have a little
- 15:35Speaker 1: another music break and then we're gonna come back i
- 15:37Speaker 1: think we've covered most of the things on the cycling
- 15:40Speaker 1: so we're gonna go on to the next leg which
- 15:42Speaker 1: was uh two miles in a kayak with absolutely no
- 15:46Speaker 1: training at all so let's uh let's bring this one
- 15:49Speaker 1: up to 2021 and this is ed sheeran and bad habits.
- 16:00Speaker 10: Every time you come around you know i can't say.
- 16:08Speaker 9: Every time the sun goes down, I let you take control.
- 16:15Speaker 9: I can feel the paradise before my world implodes. And
- 16:22Speaker 9: tonight had something wonderful. My bad habits lead to late
- 16:31Speaker 9: nights and then alone.
- 16:33Speaker 10: Conversations with a stranger I barely know.
- 16:36Speaker 9: Swearing this'll be the last, but it probably won't. I
- 16:41Speaker 9: got nothing left to lose, or use, or do My
- 16:44Speaker 9: bad habits lead to white eyes staring at space And
- 16:48Speaker 9: I know I lose control of the things that I
- 16:51Speaker 9: say I was looking for a way out, now I
- 16:54Speaker 9: can't escape Nothing happens.
- 16:57Speaker 10: After two, it's true, it's true My bad habits lead
- 17:01Speaker 10: to you My bad habits lead.
- 17:09Speaker 11: To you My bad habits lead to you Every pure
- 17:12Speaker 11: intention ends when the good times.
- 17:15Speaker 10: Start To reach the first time spark.
- 17:31Speaker 9: It started under neon lights And.
- 17:36Speaker 10: Then it all got.
- 17:37Speaker 11: Dark I only know how to go too far.
- 17:47Speaker 9: My bad habits lead to late nights ending alone Conversations
- 17:52Speaker 9: with a stranger I barely know Swearing this will be
- 17:56Speaker 9: the last but it probably won't I got nothing left
- 18:00Speaker 9: to lose or use Or do my bad habits lead
- 18:03Speaker 9: to white eyes staring at space And I know I
- 18:07Speaker 9: lose control of the things that I say I was
- 18:10Speaker 9: looking for a way out now I can't escape Nothing
- 18:14Speaker 9: happens after two, it's true It's true, my.
- 18:20Speaker 11: Bad habits lead to you.
- 18:25Speaker 10: My bad habits.
- 18:27Speaker 11: Lead to you We took a long way round And
- 18:30Speaker 11: burned till the fun ran out.
- 18:47Speaker 9: Now, my bad habits lead to late nights and then alone.
- 18:52Speaker 9: Conversations with a stranger I barely know. Swearing this will be.
- 18:57Speaker 10: The last, but it probably won't. I got nothing left
- 19:01Speaker 10: to lose or use or do.
- 19:03Speaker 9: My bad habits lead to.
- 19:05Speaker 10: White ice staring at space. And I know I lose
- 19:08Speaker 10: control over the things that I say and whisper.
- 19:12Speaker 9: It's you and bad habits in 2021.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Right, we're just going to take a little diversion from
- 19:42Speaker 1: the team called Goals because this is a little interview
- 19:47Speaker 1: that I did yesterday. current um i do want to
- 19:51Speaker 1: play it so i mean yesterday morning i went up
- 19:54Speaker 1: to william harvey to see one man do something really
- 19:57Speaker 1: special he was raising money for a hospital charity now
- 20:01Speaker 1: this short interview will explain all about it so sit
- 20:04Speaker 1: back and listen to just two minutes of me talking
- 20:07Speaker 1: to a former guest of the show we He's a
- 20:09Speaker 1: recovering alcoholic, as you will hear, and his name is
- 20:12Speaker 1: Paul Cousins. So just sit back and listen to this.
- 20:15Speaker 1: This is Kevin Daly from Radio Folkestone, and I'm up
- 20:18Speaker 1: at William Harvey Hospital today, and I'm here for a
- 20:20Speaker 1: special event. I'm joined now by Paul Cousins.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Good morning, Paul.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Good morning, Kev.
- 20:24Speaker 9: All right?
- 20:25Speaker 1: Yeah, good, thanks. Now, Paul, we know what you're doing,
- 20:29Speaker 1: but just briefly describe to our listeners... What's going on today?
- 20:33Speaker 8: Yeah, so today I'm going to do a 32-mile ultramarathon
- 20:37Speaker 8: between three hospitals. I'm going to start at the William
- 20:40Speaker 8: Harvey in Ashford, then stop off at the Kenton Canterbury,
- 20:45Speaker 8: and then from there finish up at the QEQM in Margate.
- 20:49Speaker 1: All right, so quite a feat. And looking at the
- 20:51Speaker 1: weather at the moment, it's very kind to you. But
- 20:53Speaker 1: you've got a long shift ahead of you, haven't you?
- 20:55Speaker 1: How long do you think it might take you?
- 20:56Speaker 8: Well, I'm hopeful to do it in under eight hours,
- 20:59Speaker 8: but I've said it to you before, Kevin, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 8: the time is irrelevant.
- 21:03Speaker 4: It's the challenge, my friend.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah. And what exactly is the challenge and why are
- 21:07Speaker 1: you running today?
- 21:08Speaker 8: Yeah, so as we discussed on your program before, I'm
- 21:11Speaker 8: a recovering alcoholic. I was taken into the QEQM by
- 21:15Speaker 8: ambulance and that place saved my life. And then, bizarrely enough,
- 21:19Speaker 8: I ended up working there, and I still work there
- 21:22Speaker 8: as a porter, so aiming.
- 21:24Speaker 2: To give back. Brilliant.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And the charity, what's the charity called?
- 21:28Speaker 8: Yeah, it's East Kent Hospitals Charity. So it works with
- 21:32Speaker 8: all of the hospitals in the East Kent Foundation. So, yeah,
- 21:35Speaker 8: they're going to help out a lot of people with
- 21:36Speaker 8: the money we raise.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And how much is the target? How is it going
- 21:39Speaker 1: so far?
- 21:40Speaker 8: So I set a target of £ 1, 000, and as it stands,
- 21:43Speaker 8: we're at just over £ 2, 500.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Oh, that is brilliant, Paul. It's brilliant. So.
- 21:48Speaker 1: That adds a little bit of pressure, I suppose, but
- 21:50Speaker 1: I mean, I can see you're sort of loosening up
- 21:52Speaker 1: and raring to go, and you must be looking forward
- 21:55Speaker 1: to this.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I am looking forward to it.
- 21:57Speaker 8: I mean, it wouldn't be normal if I wasn't apprehensive
- 22:00Speaker 8: and a little bit nervous, but that's all good. It's
- 22:02Speaker 8: a challenge I set myself, so I know I will
- 22:05Speaker 8: finish it. Like I say, eight hours would be great,
- 22:07Speaker 8: but if it's ten, so be it.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Paul, you're a fine example to everybody, recovering alcoholic to
- 22:13Speaker 1: a porter, patient to porter, as it says on your T-shirt.
- 22:16Speaker 1: All we can do is wish you all the best
- 22:18Speaker 1: from Radio Folkestone, and have a great day, and just
- 22:21Speaker 1: go after yourself.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Thanks very much.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Thank you. So there you go, that was Paul Cousins yesterday,
- 22:26Speaker 1: and that was at the start of his ultramarathon 32 miler.
- 22:30Speaker 1: And I'm pleased to say that he did finish in
- 22:33Speaker 1: one piece. I'm not sure of the exact time, but
- 22:36Speaker 1: I worked it out, he did it in less than
- 22:38Speaker 1: eight hours predicted. There was a team following him along
- 22:41Speaker 1: the way, taking little clips, and if you have a
- 22:43Speaker 1: look on my Facebook page, He looked so fresh. He
- 22:45Speaker 1: said he was exhausted, but it was such a, I
- 22:49Speaker 1: don't know, inspirational man to come on this show. Admit
- 22:53Speaker 1: he was an alcoholic, he's a drug user, and he
- 22:56Speaker 1: reckoned QEQM saved his life. So a little diversion there
- 23:00Speaker 1: from our three guests, but we're back in the studio now.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And so let's turn to you, John. John, so finishing
- 23:08Speaker 1: the bike, so you all came across the line on
- 23:10Speaker 1: the bike together. I mean, how much of a window
- 23:13Speaker 1: did you get until you went onto the kayak.
- 23:17Speaker 5: They didn't time your gaps in between, so you could
- 23:18Speaker 5: take as long as you wanted, but we kind of
- 23:20Speaker 5: just stopped, had a sandwich. There was some food, drinks
- 23:24Speaker 5: provided there, and we also had our own stuff with
- 23:26Speaker 5: a sandwich, and then cracked on with a kayak. Unfortunately,
- 23:29Speaker 5: you had to walk a fair way to get to
- 23:32Speaker 5: the kayak, which is a bit of a nuisance.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Well, when you think about it, though, John, you'd just
- 23:35Speaker 1: come off a 36-mile bike, and if you'd gone straight
- 23:37Speaker 1: into a kayak, it would have probably... Yeah, yeah. So
- 23:40Speaker 1: it gave you a little bit of a looseness, didn't it?
- 23:42Speaker 1: um so how did the training go in the kayak.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Uh the training was non-existent for the kayak.
- 23:48Speaker 1: This is the bit i like so you all got
- 23:50Speaker 1: in um uh you're all facing one way i'll take
- 23:54Speaker 1: it um first of all you're a big lad and
- 23:56Speaker 1: so is martin so you've got to get the balance
- 23:58Speaker 1: right tell us about that.
- 24:00Speaker 5: So it's two kayaks which are tethered together um so
- 24:04Speaker 5: it's like a bit of wood joining the two kayaks
- 24:06Speaker 5: so martin and i went at the back and two
- 24:08Speaker 5: girls went at the front martin um and rachel on
- 24:11Speaker 5: one side and me and eve on.
- 24:12Speaker 1: The other i see and you all had paddles we
- 24:15Speaker 1: all had paddles right and tell us how that the
- 24:18Speaker 1: first tell me how the first hundred meters went.
- 24:21Speaker 5: It didn't seem like we were going too bad until
- 24:23Speaker 5: we realized we were probably drifting off course a little
- 24:25Speaker 5: bit um sort of pulling to one side or to
- 24:27Speaker 5: the other yeah because obviously you've got a road with
- 24:29Speaker 5: the same same strength same speed to be able to
- 24:31Speaker 5: go in a straight line um so the coordination wasn't
- 24:34Speaker 5: as easy we kept having to stop on one side
- 24:36Speaker 5: and paddle on the other so we could get back
- 24:38Speaker 5: to where we wanted to go.
- 24:39Speaker 1: So um i'm just picturing you four in the two
- 24:42Speaker 1: kayaks um the the start point uh was the finish
- 24:47Speaker 1: point the same so was it a circular.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Route yeah it's a reservoir so you do a lap
- 24:51Speaker 5: around the reservoir which is which is two miles i
- 24:53Speaker 5: mean we've probably done more than two miles of course
- 24:56Speaker 5: but it was a two mile route.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Bit of zigzagging was it there was a little bit
- 24:59Speaker 1: yeah okay so eve over to you um eve now
- 25:02Speaker 1: you are in the front of this this little kayak
- 25:05Speaker 1: and uh You've got these two guys hopefully pushing you along.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Was it a chance to have a little rest and
- 25:10Speaker 1: let them do all the work? I did get.
- 25:12Speaker 7: Told off a few times for getting my phone out
- 25:15Speaker 7: and taking a few selfies on the kayak. But luckily
- 25:20Speaker 7: these two behind.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Were probably putting. Was it choppy? I know it was
- 25:27Speaker 1: a reservoir.
- 25:28Speaker 6: It was a little bit actually.
- 25:30Speaker 7: There was a few boats going around, so you'd see
- 25:32Speaker 7: the waves.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So if you get two in a kayak and they
- 25:36Speaker 1: come speeding past you, was there a bit of a
- 25:38Speaker 1: wash afterwards?
- 25:39Speaker 6: Oh no, like little speed boats were going around.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Oh, I see.
- 25:42Speaker 6: I guess they were kind of the marshals.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Were they safety boats? Yeah. So they were upsetting your
- 25:47Speaker 1: natural rhythm, were they? A little bit.
- 25:51Speaker 6: I'm not sure how much natural rhythm we had, but yeah.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Okay, so Martin, coming over to you, how did you
- 25:55Speaker 1: find the kayaking?
- 25:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it went better than when Rachel and I had
- 26:00Speaker 3: done a bit of kayaking on holiday once.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:03Speaker 2: That was a tested relationship. So it went better than that,
- 26:07Speaker 2: I'm pleased to say.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Right. And, I mean, from, let's say, as I said before,
- 26:12Speaker 1: you've just got off a bike for 32 miles. I mean,
- 26:15Speaker 1: were you aching in certain parts? Were your legs all wobbly?
- 26:18Speaker 2: Yeah, back of the shoulders were a bit sore, but yeah.
- 26:22Speaker 9: Right.
- 26:23Speaker 1: And how did Rachel get on?
- 26:24Speaker 2: Yeah. She enjoyed the kayak, yeah.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I suppose there's little chance to have
- 26:29Speaker 1: a proper sit down without a saddle between your legs
- 26:32Speaker 1: for 32 miles. Yeah. And what about the navigating? Was
- 26:36Speaker 1: it kind of you and John working it out between you?
- 26:39Speaker 1: Was it, obviously it was one, was it like an
- 26:42Speaker 1: anti-clockwise route or a clockwise route?
- 26:44Speaker 2: Anti-clockwise route, yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Anti-clockwise. So whoever's on the inside has to kind of
- 26:49Speaker 1: do all the steering, putting in a bit more pace, yeah?
- 26:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so I suppose by the time you finished, you
- 26:54Speaker 1: were just getting the hang of it, was you?
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty much.
- 26:58Speaker 1: And, I mean, did you, like John said, did you
- 27:01Speaker 1: go off course a bit? Was it a job to keep?
- 27:03Speaker 2: It was a job to keep on track, yeah.
- 27:05Speaker 1: On the bollards? Yeah. And was there safety boats out there?
- 27:08Speaker 2: There were safety boats out there, yeah, looking after us, yeah.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Were they by your side, because they see you were not? Chucking,
- 27:16Speaker 1: ready to throw out lifeboats, lifebelts.
- 27:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Okay, so you've done the two kilometres, was it? Did
- 27:24Speaker 1: that seem a long two kilometres or was it gone quickly?
- 27:26Speaker 2: No, it didn't seem as long as it was, to
- 27:30Speaker 2: be fair.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, right. So you get off, you all get out
- 27:35Speaker 1: of the kayak, aching all over. So what's next? You've
- 27:39Speaker 1: got a hike, haven't you?
- 27:41Speaker 2: The hike, yeah.
- 27:42Speaker 1: How long was that?
- 27:43Speaker 2: The hike was nine miles.
- 27:46Speaker 3: It took just over three hours to do.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Right, yeah.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Really tough terrain.
- 27:50Speaker 1: I was gonna say before you even started that was
- 27:53Speaker 1: there um you'd have to you probably i don't know
- 27:57Speaker 1: if you're still in your cycling kit did you did
- 27:59Speaker 1: you have backpacks to put on and you know extra
- 28:02Speaker 1: kit feet you know change your footwear.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Yeah change the footwear um had a bag ready to
- 28:07Speaker 3: go to take the water.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Was there like a little transition area.
- 28:11Speaker 3: There was a transition yeah it's a rugby club Yeah.
- 28:13Speaker 3: So they started a rugby club, so there's changing rooms
- 28:15Speaker 3: and toilets.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So you get off the kayak and you've got another
- 28:18Speaker 1: kilometre to walk back? Yeah.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Did that help at all? Or did it work against you?
- 28:24Speaker 2: I don't think it helped Eve.
- 28:26Speaker 7: No?
- 28:26Speaker 2: She had broke her toe the week before, so.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, we've got to come to that, yeah.
- 28:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll do that right now. Eve, come in. So, Eve,
- 28:34Speaker 1: you had a, what would you call it, an industrial
- 28:36Speaker 1: accident at home.
- 28:37Speaker 6: That's the one, yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Was it at home or at work?
- 28:39Speaker 4: It was at work.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 7: Yeah, I stubbed my toe and well and truly broke it,
- 28:44Speaker 7: as I say, the week, well, just over a week before.
- 28:46Speaker 6: So the hike was definitely the worst part for me.
- 28:49Speaker 1: I bet, yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 6: Pretty, yeah, pretty, pretty sore.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:53Speaker 6: Especially coming downhill.
- 28:54Speaker 10: Right.
- 28:55Speaker 6: Yeah, you can't.
- 28:56Speaker 1: And, I mean, your footwear, oh, you've got a broken toe.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Did you have a bandage on it, which made your
- 29:03Speaker 1: feet swell up inside a shoe or whatever?
- 29:05Speaker 7: I put my hiking boots on for the hike, which
- 29:08Speaker 7: were definitely more comfortable than the trainers. And I've got
- 29:11Speaker 7: some running trainers that are a size bigger than I.
- 29:14Speaker 6: Would usually wear.
- 29:15Speaker 7: So I had a bit of giving everything I wore.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Did you ever think to use these Nordic poles at all?
- 29:22Speaker 7: I didn't, but there were people with poles that were
- 29:26Speaker 7: doing it.
- 29:27Speaker 6: But yeah, we didn't use them.
- 29:29Speaker 2: No.
- 29:29Speaker 1: To be honest, I did a walk many years ago.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I walked from London to Brighton, 62 miles. And I
- 29:37Speaker 1: tried these poles out because when I was walking... all
- 29:40Speaker 1: my fingers were getting fat because the blood wasn't circulating
- 29:44Speaker 1: properly so they told me to hang on to my
- 29:47Speaker 1: rucksack which did work but someone else said why don't
- 29:51Speaker 1: you try the poles and I thought no but they
- 29:54Speaker 1: worked they worked I was using the poles and it
- 29:59Speaker 1: took the pressure off my knees, which I was suffering
- 30:02Speaker 1: with at the time. So, yeah, it was too late
- 30:04Speaker 1: for you to do that, but it was a good idea. Right, John,
- 30:08Speaker 1: come in. So you've got out the kayak and you've
- 30:11Speaker 1: done your kilometre and you've got all your stuff ready.
- 30:16Speaker 1: How was the walk for you?
- 30:17Speaker 5: It started off really nice and it was flat and
- 30:19Speaker 5: you went through a little village and there was a
- 30:21Speaker 5: nice little pub and you thought, oh, we could stop
- 30:22Speaker 5: there on the way back. That looks lovely. But then
- 30:25Speaker 5: it kind of started going uphill again. pretty quickly yeah
- 30:28Speaker 5: it was really hot sort of early afternoon at this
- 30:31Speaker 5: point yeah um yeah going uphill was a challenge and
- 30:35Speaker 5: it just didn't seem to stop going uphill yeah um
- 30:39Speaker 5: also when you get to the top there's some amazing
- 30:42Speaker 5: views and you could kind of see how far you've
- 30:43Speaker 5: come up and how well you've done yeah but it
- 30:45Speaker 5: was a long way up yeah um also i expected
- 30:48Speaker 5: it to be on sort of a path but it
- 30:50Speaker 5: wasn't really it was all all trail was it yeah
- 30:52Speaker 5: all trails all like broken bits of rock and all
- 30:55Speaker 5: right it's a bit hard.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Did you have any of them um uh styles to
- 30:59Speaker 1: get over at all or was.
- 31:00Speaker 5: It yeah there was a few sort of um like
- 31:03Speaker 5: kissing gates and styles that you have to have to traverse.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I do remember that when i did my walk the
- 31:08Speaker 1: styles were the worst thing at all lifting your feet
- 31:11Speaker 1: up and trying to get over them and most of
- 31:14Speaker 1: us uh we took our bags off and passed them
- 31:16Speaker 1: over to someone else um so were you all carrying
- 31:20Speaker 1: your own rucksacks or did you have like yeah we.
- 31:22Speaker 5: All had our own rucksacks um there was a load
- 31:25Speaker 5: of fruit at the beginning Eve decided she wanted half
- 31:27Speaker 5: a dozen apples for some reason so they went in
- 31:29Speaker 5: my rucksack and didn't get eaten um so I just
- 31:32Speaker 5: carried them around for no.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Reason right and so you're right Eve sometimes coming down
- 31:39Speaker 1: even if you haven't got a broken toe can be
- 31:41Speaker 1: harder is that right John.
- 31:42Speaker 5: Yeah definitely um especially at that point you know you've
- 31:45Speaker 5: you've done the ascent you've seen the views at the
- 31:48Speaker 5: top so you've done all the hard work well you
- 31:50Speaker 5: think it's a hard work you've got the good bit
- 31:51Speaker 5: with the views and you think if we're done now
- 31:54Speaker 5: we can get back yeah but you're not done there's
- 31:55Speaker 5: still a long way to go.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Yeah yeah so was it like halfway when you got
- 31:59Speaker 1: to the top or was it like a little bit unbalanced.
- 32:03Speaker 5: I think it was a bit it was probably about
- 32:05Speaker 5: halfway maybe just over yeah um it just it kind
- 32:09Speaker 5: of all rolled into one at the end where you
- 32:10Speaker 5: got to the top and then you think oh we'll
- 32:12Speaker 5: walk up here and then walk down.
- 32:13Speaker 4: You're not, you're walking along the top for quite a while.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Oh, I see. Yeah.
- 32:16Speaker 4: And then you have to come back down again. Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 4: And the pass down was tough.
- 32:19Speaker 1: You do end up at the rugby club.
- 32:21Speaker 4: You end up back at the rugby club. Yeah.
- 32:23Speaker 5: Okay.
- 32:23Speaker 1: So that must've been a nice feeling. Um, so Martin,
- 32:27Speaker 1: how did Rachel get on with the walk?
- 32:29Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a few moans and groans, but she managed it.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Well, I suppose you've got to keep saying it's psychological
- 32:35Speaker 1: because you like on the last event and, uh, you know, um,
- 32:39Speaker 1: I mean, were there between all of you, was there
- 32:41Speaker 1: any sort of, down times where you really had to
- 32:43Speaker 1: like oh come on we can do.
- 32:45Speaker 3: This there are a few moments particularly on the hike
- 32:48Speaker 3: i think the heat really got to everyone and on
- 32:52Speaker 3: that um that climb up was pretty brutal yeah so the.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Bit along the top was a bit of respite but
- 32:59Speaker 1: um you thought you knew you gotta go down.
- 33:01Speaker 3: It wasn't quite respite because the terrain was so uneven
- 33:04Speaker 3: so you really had to be have to you wits
- 33:06Speaker 3: about you just to make sure you didn't watching what
- 33:08Speaker 3: you're putting your foot all the time.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Yeah and did you do any sort of walking practice around.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Here no no a couple just to break the boots
- 33:17Speaker 3: in um but yeah yeah all right.
- 33:19Speaker 1: And were there water stops along the way whether did
- 33:21Speaker 1: you see other walkers and um.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Yeah plenty of water stops along the way um which
- 33:26Speaker 3: is refreshing because it was so hot when you got
- 33:29Speaker 3: your water bottle out it was just warm water so
- 33:31Speaker 3: it wasn't yeah it wasn't refreshing.
- 33:34Speaker 1: No that's all yeah so you're coming down the hill
- 33:38Speaker 1: um is it one of these uh terrains where can
- 33:42Speaker 1: see the finish in the distance.
- 33:44Speaker 3: You could see the finish at the top and you
- 33:46Speaker 3: thought that's not that far and then you you navigate
- 33:50Speaker 3: your way down and then it seemed like we walked
- 33:53Speaker 3: forever through that village again yeah around a little industrial
- 33:57Speaker 3: estate you didn't stop at the pub well there was
- 33:59Speaker 3: a pub and it there was a lot of people
- 34:01Speaker 3: by this time there was a lot of people outside
- 34:03Speaker 3: you know the beer garden was full and it looked
- 34:06Speaker 3: really appealing yeah Were.
- 34:07Speaker 1: They all walkers from the... No, no, just locals.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Just locals, yeah.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Because I suppose at 30 degrees it was a lovely
- 34:13Speaker 1: day to go out and have a drink.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Yeah, and England were on that evening as well in
- 34:17Speaker 3: the World Cup, so yeah, the pubs were full and
- 34:20Speaker 3: it looked appealing and I think someone did suggest we
- 34:23Speaker 3: did nip in there for a quick cold drink.
- 34:26Speaker 1: But being true athletes, the true team that you are,
- 34:29Speaker 1: you decided against it and sold it on, is that right?
- 34:31Speaker 2: We did, yeah.
- 34:32Speaker 8: Yeah, good.
- 34:33Speaker 1: OK, well, time for another bit of music. We've been
- 34:35Speaker 1: doing a lot of talking, which is great, because this
- 34:38Speaker 1: is becoming so interesting, and we're going to talk about
- 34:41Speaker 1: you crossing the line, how you feel, but we mustn't
- 34:43Speaker 1: forget that we want to know why you did it.
- 34:46Speaker 1: So after this song, now, this is Example from 2012
- 34:49Speaker 1: and Say Nothing. MUSIC PLAYS From 2012 there, that's Example
- 35:05Speaker 1: and Say Nothing. OK, now we have got a massively
- 35:11Speaker 1: busy show here and we're joined by a special guest.
- 35:14Speaker 1: And we want to say good morning to Ollie. Good morning, Ollie.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Morning.
- 35:18Speaker 1: How are you? I'm all right. Good, you're all right. Good,
- 35:21Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear it. Now, Ollie, a little birdie
- 35:24Speaker 1: tells me you play rugby. Is that right? It is.
- 35:26Speaker 1: And who do you play for?
- 35:27Speaker 9: Folkestone.
- 35:28Speaker 1: All right. And what age group are you?
- 35:31Speaker 9: Under 12.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Under 12. And have you got a game this weekend?
- 35:34Speaker 8: I do.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Oh, right. And have you had any games? Is this
- 35:38Speaker 1: your first game or have you had a couple of
- 35:39Speaker 1: games already? No, this is the second one this season. Right.
- 35:43Speaker 1: How did you get on in your last game? We
- 35:46Speaker 1: did pretty good.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Does that mean you won then?
- 35:50Speaker 10: Yeah, we did.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Or are you true? Or you got big in a
- 35:52Speaker 1: 50-0 and you don't want to talk about it?
- 35:53Speaker 4: No, we won, but we should have done better.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I see.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 35:57Speaker 5: And.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Who are you playing today? Do you know you're playing
- 36:00Speaker 1: at home or you're playing away?
- 36:02Speaker 11: At home.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Against, do you know who it is?
- 36:05Speaker 11: Tunbridge.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Tunbridge. Yeah. That sounds a very tough game, actually. Yes. So, Ollie,
- 36:11Speaker 1: have you been playing rugby long? Yeah. I don't really
- 36:14Speaker 1: know how long. Yeah, so long you can't remember.
- 36:17Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah, good. And what position do you play?
- 36:21Speaker 4: Fly half.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Fly half. Oh, right. Okay, that's a good position. And
- 36:25Speaker 1: have you scored any tries?
- 36:27Speaker 4: Yeah, quite a lot, actually.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Oh, have you? All right. Oh, good.
- 36:30Speaker 7: Good.
- 36:30Speaker 1: That's great news.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Well, we've had, in recent times, we've had plenty of
- 36:35Speaker 1: rugby players in. So, we're going to put you to
- 36:38Speaker 1: that list. And thank you for having a little chat. So,
- 36:42Speaker 1: I'm going to pass you over, if you don't mind,
- 36:45Speaker 1: to John now.
- 36:46Speaker 2: John.
- 36:47Speaker 1: John, if... Before we've only got less than 10 minutes left.
- 36:51Speaker 1: So what I want to do is just if you
- 36:55Speaker 1: tell us a little bit about why you did it,
- 36:57Speaker 1: why you did this challenge. And then if we've got time,
- 37:01Speaker 1: we're going to speak to Thea.
- 37:03Speaker 5: So we set out to raise some money for actual
- 37:05Speaker 5: medical research. So a fantastic charity who look after sick,
- 37:10Speaker 5: disabled young children.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Really worthwhile.
- 37:13Speaker 5: We set out to raise £ 2, 000, which we got to yesterday,
- 37:16Speaker 5: thanks to your kind top-up, Kev.
- 37:19Speaker 4: We didn't know it. We was at £ 1, 996, just slightly short.
- 37:22Speaker 1: I could see that for quite a while, and I thought, oh,
- 37:25Speaker 1: someone is going to put £ 4 on there. You can't,
- 37:28Speaker 1: you know. So, yeah, I'm glad I did that for you.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Yeah, we appreciate that.
- 37:33Speaker 5: And the fundraising bit is a bit that actually takes
- 37:36Speaker 5: quite a lot of time and effort. You know, you've
- 37:37Speaker 5: got to do your training, get out on your bike,
- 37:39Speaker 5: but the fundraising sort of, arranging the quiz which again
- 37:42Speaker 5: we're very thankful for you coming down and being our
- 37:44Speaker 5: quiz master and then doing fantasy football and then sharing
- 37:48Speaker 5: stuff on social media it takes like quite a bit
- 37:49Speaker 5: of time and effort to get get the money together
- 37:51Speaker 5: but thanks to people's generous donations we're able to make
- 37:54Speaker 5: it did you.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Set your own target or was it something that you
- 37:57Speaker 1: kind of had to achieve because the charity wanted that
- 38:00Speaker 1: it's a.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Preset target yeah yeah from them so yeah 500 pound
- 38:04Speaker 5: per person is is doable okay it doesn't come easily
- 38:07Speaker 5: does it.
- 38:07Speaker 1: No no i mean it's um I mean, it's getting
- 38:10Speaker 1: tough now because a few years ago, London Marathon, for example,
- 38:15Speaker 1: was about £ 1, 000. And now what I'm seeing, and I've
- 38:19Speaker 1: done a few quiz nights and I've got a few
- 38:20Speaker 1: coming up, people are asked to find 2,200, which is
- 38:25Speaker 1: a big ask. I mean, with the quiz night, I
- 38:29Speaker 1: think I've said to both of you, the more you
- 38:33Speaker 1: put into it, the more you get out of it
- 38:35Speaker 1: because people are receptive and they give you drinks prizes
- 38:39Speaker 1: and then come along and you had a great afternoon
- 38:41Speaker 1: actually um you managed to get hold of the pub
- 38:44Speaker 1: and uh it was um almost like it was uh
- 38:48Speaker 1: just your family and friends you know i mean there
- 38:49Speaker 1: was no no punters from that were drinking there might
- 38:52Speaker 1: have been one or two but it was a great
- 38:54Speaker 1: atmosphere wasn't.
- 38:55Speaker 5: It john yeah there was a couple of regulars in
- 38:56Speaker 5: there but none in the quiz i don't think so
- 38:58Speaker 5: it was all family and friends from from the four
- 39:00Speaker 5: of us have kind of put a table together and
- 39:02Speaker 5: come down and participate in the quiz and giving us
- 39:04Speaker 5: a hard-earned money.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Right excellent uh okay martin so coming back to you
- 39:09Speaker 1: i mean that was the challenge that came out of
- 39:12Speaker 1: your um your 40th birthday um now your next birthday
- 39:19Speaker 1: will you be coming up with something else or have
- 39:21Speaker 1: you got something else already lined up or has it
- 39:23Speaker 1: put everybody.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Off i don't think we're doing another challenge quite like
- 39:26Speaker 3: that yeah i would like to do a few more
- 39:29Speaker 3: cycles because i really enjoyed the cycling aspect of it
- 39:32Speaker 3: i think say to rachel and talking to her afterwards
- 39:35Speaker 3: i think we'd like to do a few more of
- 39:37Speaker 3: them longer rides yeah and there's loads around kent that we'd.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Like yeah yeah i think pilgrims have got pilgrims is
- 39:45Speaker 1: on the list three choices yeah yeah.
- 39:47Speaker 3: Pilgrims is definitely on the list um The Rotary Club
- 39:50Speaker 3: do one in the marsh as well, which is quite
- 39:52Speaker 3: a nice one.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I've done that a few times.
- 39:54Speaker 1: I've heard of that. It must be nice and flat,
- 39:55Speaker 1: a bit different from.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Yeah, chair de gorge. Chair de gorge, yeah.
- 39:59Speaker 1: And Eve, come in. Eve, would you be up for
- 40:03Speaker 1: just a cycling challenge?
- 40:05Speaker 7: Yeah, it's not something that we'd ever done before, really, cycling.
- 40:09Speaker 7: So we've all had a go at a bit of
- 40:11Speaker 7: running and some other sports.
- 40:12Speaker 6: So, yeah, definitely. It's not off the cards for me.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Right. And when you finish, when you'd finally finished your...
- 40:18Speaker 1: Your Cheddar Gorge Challenge. Did you think, oh, that is it.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I'm never doing anything like that again. Or is it
- 40:25Speaker 1: one of those things that, you know, like once you
- 40:28Speaker 1: got over the initial shock, you thought, oh, I've really
- 40:30Speaker 1: enjoyed that.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Yeah, it was good fun. It was a good day out.
- 40:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:34Speaker 6: Something a bit different. It was testing, but not unachievable.
- 40:38Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 40:38Speaker 6: I think it was, yeah, really good.
- 40:40Speaker 1: That is a great attitude, actually. Great attitude. Because there
- 40:44Speaker 1: are times when you're doing, well, I've done a few
- 40:46Speaker 1: marathons and done a long walk and... there's times when
- 40:48Speaker 1: you think, oh, why am I doing this? You know,
- 40:50Speaker 1: but you've got, it's a mental thing, isn't it? You've
- 40:52Speaker 1: got to turn it around in your head and, uh,
- 40:54Speaker 1: you know, well, you had a team, team around you
- 40:56Speaker 1: or all of you. Uh, what about you fellas? You
- 40:59Speaker 1: two fellas, uh, John, did you have any low points
- 41:01Speaker 1: or were you kind of, and Martin always kind of
- 41:04Speaker 1: G in the ladies up or did you have any
- 41:06Speaker 1: low points?
- 41:07Speaker 4: Um, I don't think I had any low points at all.
- 41:09Speaker 5: I think I might've got a bit grumpy at one
- 41:10Speaker 5: point when I was a bit hot and hungry, but
- 41:12Speaker 5: other than that, I was, I was okay.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Oh, good.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:16Speaker 1: All right. Um, So, Martin, this cycling challenge, is this
- 41:23Speaker 1: a definite, do you think? It's not a drunken night
- 41:26Speaker 1: and you're going to do it. Your experience of cycling
- 41:30Speaker 1: has led you on to do more challenges?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so, yeah. I'll keep with the running
- 41:35Speaker 2: as well.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:36Speaker 2: But, yeah, it's nice.
- 41:38Speaker 1: How's your running going? I haven't seen you lately at races.
- 41:40Speaker 2: I was in Copenhagen two weeks ago.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Oh, was you?
- 41:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Oh, I did text you and you said you was
- 41:45Speaker 1: in Copenhagen.
- 41:46Speaker 2: What were you doing there? Half Marathon.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Oh, wow. Brilliant. Oh, that's another programme to talk about. Oh,
- 41:52Speaker 1: it's good to see you're still doing it. And John, John,
- 41:55Speaker 1: come in. I did say we've only got like four
- 41:57Speaker 1: minutes left, but tell me briefly about something you support massively.
- 42:01Speaker 1: It's another charity, the Wooden Spoon Charity. Explain to our listeners.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Yeah, so the Wooden Spoon Charity.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Provides facilities for disabled young children across the country. I'm
- 42:12Speaker 5: the treasurer for Wooden Spoon Kent. I do a lot
- 42:15Speaker 5: of work for them. I enjoy doing charity stuff for them.
- 42:19Speaker 5: The tournament I went to in Newcastle was a charity
- 42:21Speaker 5: tournament organised by them. They have open teams, vets teams,
- 42:25Speaker 5: mixed teams. And we're hoping to put out a Kent
- 42:29Speaker 5: vets team or a Kent open team against a tour
- 42:31Speaker 5: inside next weekend at Folkestone. To raise a bit of money,
- 42:35Speaker 5: raise a bit of awareness around.
- 42:36Speaker 4: What the charity do, who they are.
- 42:39Speaker 5: And also have a bit of a social and a
- 42:41Speaker 5: nice time on a Saturday evening under floodlights.
- 42:44Speaker 1: All right. So you've got, is that the game next weekend?
- 42:47Speaker 4: That's the game next weekend at Folkestone, yes.
- 42:48Speaker 1: And what about this touring side that are coming?
- 42:51Speaker 5: So we're playing a team called Viper Club Octopus who
- 42:53Speaker 5: are based in Ooden in Holland. We have been, we
- 42:58Speaker 5: were founded in the same year. We've been there a
- 43:00Speaker 5: number of times, sort of a twin club. I can't
- 43:03Speaker 5: remember how long it goes back to, but certainly as
- 43:05Speaker 5: long as I've been in the club for the last,
- 43:06Speaker 5: 30 years they've been a part of it. It used
- 43:08Speaker 5: to be an annual fixture. We went a couple of
- 43:10Speaker 5: years ago. And yeah, they're coming over to see us
- 43:14Speaker 5: for the weekend. So they turn up on Saturday. They're
- 43:16Speaker 5: staying in folks on Saturday night. Were due to stay
- 43:18Speaker 5: at the Burst Inn, but had to reorganise their plans.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Then they're off to Harlequins on Sunday to watch Harlequins play.
- 43:25Speaker 5: Then they'll go back Sunday night.
- 43:27Speaker 1: All right. So it's a real... A rugby weekend for
- 43:30Speaker 1: them coming over here. And really, London's not too far
- 43:33Speaker 1: if they go on the train, is it?
- 43:34Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not too bad at all.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Yeah, right. So that's next Saturday?
- 43:40Speaker 4: Next Saturday, yeah.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Next Saturday.
- 43:42Speaker 4: Next Saturday, 5 o'clock at the club.
- 43:43Speaker 2: 5 o'clock.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Has the first team got a game?
- 43:45Speaker 4: The first team kick off at 3 o'clock.
- 43:47Speaker 1: At home?
- 43:47Speaker 2: Yeah, at home.
- 43:48Speaker 4: So we follow in the first team game.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Oh, back to back.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Right, OK. Well, as I say, the time is running.
- 43:55Speaker 1: So really, I just want to bring you all in
- 43:57Speaker 1: because I just want to say our goodbyes. So, Eve,
- 44:01Speaker 1: let's come to you. Eve, thank you so much for
- 44:03Speaker 1: coming in. You seemed a little bit nervous at first,
- 44:05Speaker 1: but you've done so well telling us about it. And
- 44:10Speaker 1: it's good that you've come out of this challenge, come
- 44:12Speaker 1: out the other side feeling rather positive. Some people do
- 44:15Speaker 1: a marathon for the first time and they go, absolutely
- 44:17Speaker 1: never again. So, are you looking forward to a cycling challenge?
- 44:22Speaker 7: Yeah, sounds like we're probably going to go away from
- 44:25Speaker 7: this and be discussing it after this.
- 44:28Speaker 1: All right. Well, I'm going to keep tabs on you now.
- 44:30Speaker 1: So we want to find out when this next challenge
- 44:33Speaker 1: is and, um, want to hear all about it. So John,
- 44:36Speaker 1: over to you. Now, John, you, you're suffering with this injury,
- 44:38Speaker 1: which is, must be a real, uh, um, well, pain
- 44:42Speaker 1: in the backside because a man of your sporting, uh, experience. Um,
- 44:48Speaker 1: do you think this, would this stop you from doing
- 44:50Speaker 1: other things like cycling or?
- 44:52Speaker 4: No, it won't stop me.
- 44:53Speaker 5: It'll probably push me towards more, um, or sorry less
- 44:57Speaker 5: vigorous activity yeah so rather than playing rugby i might
- 45:00Speaker 5: end up doing more cycling yeah walking i've done a
- 45:03Speaker 5: few charity events and which i've quite enjoyed so i'm
- 45:06Speaker 5: going to sign up for another one for next.
- 45:07Speaker 1: Year martin before we finish um i mean would you
- 45:10Speaker 1: take apart from the cycling you think you've sort of
- 45:12Speaker 1: overcooked it a little bit doing the the cheddar gorge.
- 45:16Speaker 2: No, no. I still have plenty to go.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Right. So I'm really sorry to say this. We could
- 45:22Speaker 1: have easily done another out here. But thank you all
- 45:25Speaker 1: for coming in. Thank you, Martin.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Thank you, Kev. Thanks for having us.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Cheers, Kev. And thank you, Eve. And thank you to Ollie.
- 45:30Speaker 1: And sorry, Theo, we didn't have time to talk to you.
- 45:32Speaker 1: But here we go. It's time for the news.
- 45:37Speaker 5: On 105.9 FM, online at RadioFolkestone.com and on your smart speaker.
