Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: You Have To Have Grace With Yourself, OK?
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Badi here. You are listening to five
- 0:26Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. Happy for the July everyone. I
- 0:30Speaker 1: don't usually release on holidays, but it's been a second AKA.
- 0:36Speaker 1: This is exactly what I'm going to talk about today.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Last week I was doing the most. I get the
- 0:43Speaker 1: opportunity to do a lot of different things that I enjoy,
- 0:47Speaker 1: from writing and editing to podcasting and hosting, and I
- 0:53Speaker 1: did so many of those things last week. I was
- 0:57Speaker 1: in Paris for Breaking, which I was reporting on for
- 1:02Speaker 1: Marie Claire as a writer, and I was also podcasting
- 1:06Speaker 1: them while I was there, and working through emails and
- 1:10Speaker 1: edits on other projects that I'm working on, and planning
- 1:13Speaker 1: months ahead at the same time, and taking meetings and
- 1:16Speaker 1: so many things. And it came to be Wednesday, and
- 1:24Speaker 1: I got to this point when I realized that something
- 1:29Speaker 1: had to give, and I am bad at that. I
- 1:32Speaker 1: am bad at letting something fall by the wayside when
- 1:36Speaker 1: I commit to something like I am all in. And
- 1:39Speaker 1: as many of you know, I have a newsletter that
- 1:42Speaker 1: comes out every Friday.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's called the Weekly Hurdle.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And upon evaluating all the different things that I was
- 1:50Speaker 1: doing and all of the obligations that I had. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: made the conscious decision that I had to let the
- 1:56Speaker 1: weekly hurdle go last week.
- 1:58Speaker 2: It had to happen.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I thought about the repercussions, I thought about the other
- 2:03Speaker 1: things on my to do list, and I made the
- 2:06Speaker 1: decision that this was the thing that I was going
- 2:09Speaker 1: to let slide.
- 2:10Speaker 2: And I got home on I.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Ended up getting home on Monday because they canceled my
- 2:15Speaker 1: flight on Sunday, which is a completely different story. But
- 2:18Speaker 1: when I got home on Monday, I had two meetings
- 2:22Speaker 1: back to back. I got home to my apartment around
- 2:25Speaker 1: twelve thirty in the afternoon, two meetings back to back.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I hit a deadline that I needed to hit.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I finished something for the podcast, like I was doing
- 2:34Speaker 1: a lot of things, and I remember thinking in that moment, Wow,
- 2:38Speaker 1: like you did it. There were so many things that
- 2:42Speaker 1: were on your plate going into last week, going into
- 2:46Speaker 1: the international travel, and I gave myself the grace to
- 2:51Speaker 1: choose what I could do, execute what I could do
- 2:56Speaker 1: to the best of my ability, and release the rest.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I have been in so many different phases, at so
- 3:05Speaker 1: many different points where my best I would get down
- 3:09Speaker 1: on that being not good enough. And now I recognize
- 3:14Speaker 1: that all I could do is the best I can
- 3:16Speaker 1: with what I've got. And so last week that's exactly
- 3:20Speaker 1: what it looked like. It looked like no newsletter, and
- 3:24Speaker 1: next week it will look entirely different. And that grace
- 3:30Speaker 1: is something that has grown with me. That grace is
- 3:35Speaker 1: like a muscle. It is something that I am strengthening.
- 3:39Speaker 1: How does a muscle strengthen? You give it something to
- 3:42Speaker 1: push up against. My grace with myself is pushing up
- 3:47Speaker 1: against challenge and adversity and moments where I feel frustrated,
- 3:51Speaker 1: right and in those moments, it is growing, it is developing,
- 3:57Speaker 1: and for that I am so grateful.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You've got to be easy on yourself. We only have
- 4:03Speaker 2: this one shot. Right.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Not to be corny or anything, but there is no
- 4:08Speaker 1: use spending your time shoulding on yourself, woulding on myself
- 4:12Speaker 1: saying I could have done something this way. I refuse
- 4:17Speaker 1: to live my life like that. I accept that in
- 4:21Speaker 1: all circumstances, I have the best intentions, and so I
- 4:25Speaker 1: exercised those intentions last week. I chose myself. I chose
- 4:31Speaker 1: my colm and for that I am better for it.
- 4:36Speaker 1: My question for you this week is where could you
- 4:39Speaker 1: be offering yourself some more grace. It's hard. I get it.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I've been there. Where could you be a bit easier
- 4:48Speaker 1: on yourself? And what would that look like in practice?
- 4:53Speaker 1: And now a listener question. Hey, Emily, I've been your
- 4:56Speaker 1: listener and follower for quite some time, and even to
- 5:00Speaker 1: say hi in person a few times when you visited Boston.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I am also a runner, and even after ten plus
- 5:06Speaker 1: years of running marathons, I still struggle to balance strength
- 5:09Speaker 1: training and running. It's always in either or for me.
- 5:12Speaker 1: If my running is going well, it's almost inevitable that
- 5:15Speaker 1: my lifting sessions will drop to zero or maybe one
- 5:19Speaker 1: per week with no progression. Following you on Instagram, I
- 5:23Speaker 1: can see that you are able to successfully combine the
- 5:25Speaker 1: two and it's very impressive to me. So my question
- 5:28Speaker 1: is can you describe how you did it and what
- 5:30Speaker 1: are the principles you follow. I've been working with a
- 5:33Speaker 1: personal strength trainer and also a running coach, but the
- 5:35Speaker 1: strength trainer tends to overload my legs and my running suffers.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Any advice on this, thanks so much, best, Svetlana. So, Svetlana,
- 5:45Speaker 1: great question, and honestly, I want you to know that
- 5:47Speaker 1: you are not alone in this You know how many
- 5:49Speaker 1: I mean this was me. I wasn't strength training at
- 5:52Speaker 1: all at all until I had to because running was
- 5:55Speaker 1: taken from me. And so what I've done over the
- 5:58Speaker 1: last year is really prioritize strength, but really take a
- 6:02Speaker 1: step back to zoom out on my goals. Right now,
- 6:06Speaker 1: my goals are twofold one. I'm having a lot of
- 6:09Speaker 1: fun chasing my own potential on the run, and I'm
- 6:12Speaker 1: also having a lot of fun chasing my own potential
- 6:14Speaker 1: in the gym. It is hard to do both of
- 6:16Speaker 1: those things simultaneously. The best way that I can is
- 6:20Speaker 1: by creating an open avenue communication with my strength coach
- 6:24Speaker 1: about where I'm at with my running goals. So I
- 6:28Speaker 1: right now strength train for days a week. I run
- 6:31Speaker 1: fortays a week. As you can tell, they are only
- 6:33Speaker 1: seven days a week, which means that one or two
- 6:36Speaker 1: of those days, depending on what's happening, might be a double.
- 6:42Speaker 1: To that note, I work on my schedule in a
- 6:47Speaker 1: way that I am not over doing it on my legs.
- 6:53Speaker 1: So if I'm doing an interval session which is leg heavy,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I will try to do my life strength workout on
- 7:01Speaker 1: the same day, so that way I can give that
- 7:04Speaker 1: group of muscles, that muscle group time to recover and repair.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Fun fact, your muscles create small tears when you are
- 7:12Speaker 1: strength training. It's totally natural, something to worry about. But
- 7:15Speaker 1: those typically need at least forty hours to repair themselves,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and in that act of repairing themselves, they get stronger.
- 7:25Speaker 2: It's important. It's good.
- 7:26Speaker 1: It's good, I promise. So I'm giving you all this information.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I'm giving you some insight into how I operate. What
- 7:33Speaker 1: does this mean for you? It means that, dependent on
- 7:36Speaker 1: your goals, it will be helpful to talk one on
- 7:38Speaker 1: one with a trainer. I love that Svetlana is saying
- 7:41Speaker 1: that she has a strength trainer and a running coach, right,
- 7:45Speaker 1: So communicate with those people about what you're excited about,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and those individuals might need to communicate with one another
- 7:53Speaker 1: as well. I cannot even stress how helpful it has
- 7:57Speaker 1: been for me to go to physical therapy, to talk
- 8:00Speaker 1: to my guy Luke and then have him give me
- 8:03Speaker 1: information that I can then pass along to my strength coach.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It's so helpful and above all else, at the end
- 8:10Speaker 1: of the day, listen to your body, because when you've
- 8:13Speaker 1: got a bunch of different goals, there are going to
- 8:15Speaker 1: be times where you can't do things as planned and
- 8:18Speaker 1: that's okay. This goes back to our topic of having
- 8:20Speaker 1: grace with ourselves. So listen, don't judge yourself, do the
- 8:27Speaker 1: best you can with what you have, and take things
- 8:29Speaker 1: one day at a time.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I hope that helps. I hope my insight helps.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And like I said above all else here, having your
- 8:37Speaker 1: expert team communicate with one another and listening to your
- 8:39Speaker 1: body will be majorly helpful in the pursuit of the
- 8:44Speaker 1: things that excite you. Make sure you're following along with
- 8:48Speaker 1: Hurdle Over at Hurdle podcast, I'm over at Emily a
- 8:50Speaker 1: Body another hurdle conquered.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
