- 2:12Speaker 3: bit of water yesterday. Brad is not there right now.

- 2:33Speaker 3: his mother, a couple kids, and also his stepfather. That
- 2:39Speaker 3: case went to the Supreme Court, and now it looks
- 2:42Speaker 3: like there's going to be another trial in that particular case,

- 2:59Speaker 3: I want to welcome to the show. Dick Daughtry now
- 3:00Speaker 3: from the Kanawh Valley Fellowship Home. How are you doing, sir?
- 3:03Speaker 5: I'm fantastic, Dave, how are you?
- 3:05Speaker 3: I am doing fine? A little traffic update if you're
- 3:08Speaker 3: traveling on I sixty four this morning. There might be
- 3:11Speaker 3: a little bit of a delay as as you experience
- 3:14Speaker 3: yourself this morning.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Right yeaes sir, I live at Nitro and I get
- 3:17Speaker 6: on at the Institute exit coming towards town and they're
- 3:21Speaker 6: doing some construction right there that slowed things down. And
- 3:24Speaker 6: so anyway, I should I knew about it. I should
- 3:26Speaker 6: have left a little bit earlier. But it's all right.
- 3:28Speaker 6: I called you a two moments or two minutes before
- 3:31Speaker 6: time to yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 3: We were trying, we were trying to find you, and
- 3:33Speaker 3: you said, I'm just pulling a parking lot. I said, okay,
- 3:36Speaker 3: that's fine because it happens. I mean, I live listen,
- 3:38Speaker 3: I live in tays Valley. I know all about it,
- 3:40Speaker 3: but I appreciate you making the the time to be
- 3:44Speaker 3: here with the state. First of all, you're the executive
- 3:46Speaker 3: director of the Knah Valley Fellowship Fellowship Home. Tell us
- 3:50Speaker 3: about this particular entity and what it does.
- 3:55Speaker 6: I'd be happy to I am the executive director of
- 3:57Speaker 6: the Canal Valley Fellowship Home is a sober living facility
- 4:00Speaker 6: for men that are battling addiction issues. They're trying to
- 4:06Speaker 6: get better change their lives. We've been in business since
- 4:09Speaker 6: nineteen sixty seven. We were originally an outreach mission of
- 4:13Speaker 6: the First Presbyterian Church, and our facility used to be
- 4:16Speaker 6: right next door to the church, and then we moved
- 4:19Speaker 6: and that's to your west here from the studio, and
- 4:23Speaker 6: we moved to the east from the studio across the
- 4:25Speaker 6: parking lot. We've been there since two thousand and five
- 4:29Speaker 6: and it's a fifteen bed facility at Virginia Street. And
- 4:33Speaker 6: then we have incorporated aftercare, an aftercare home called Kimball
- 4:38Speaker 6: Hall and another apartment building called Dickinson Place, and those
- 4:44Speaker 6: both are on Choir Street. So as men face through
- 4:49Speaker 6: after they come to us, after they've been in either
- 4:51Speaker 6: treatment for alcohol and drug addiction or they've maybe come
- 4:56Speaker 6: out of incarceration, a lot of people get in trouble.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Good people do bad.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Things when they're under the influence of drugs and alcohol,
- 5:03Speaker 6: and so we help. It's basically a structured living program
- 5:07Speaker 6: that helps we talk about structure, action, accountability, so one
- 5:11Speaker 6: day to time we get over our addiction. And I'm
- 5:14Speaker 6: proud to be a part of I'm a person in
- 5:15Speaker 6: long term recovery. I've been sober, i haven't had a drinker,
- 5:18Speaker 6: moved to my honoring drug for thirty seven and a
- 5:20Speaker 6: half years, and so it's a mission for me.
- 5:23Speaker 5: It's a personal thing.
- 5:24Speaker 6: I've retired from the car business, and I've done a
- 5:27Speaker 6: lot of things here in the Canall Valley, but I'm
- 5:30Speaker 6: a riverboat captain, former Captain of the Spirit of West Virginia,
- 5:34Speaker 6: different things like that. But the Fellowship Home, I've been
- 5:37Speaker 6: a volunteer there for thirty years and I've been the
- 5:40Speaker 6: executive director of the former director, David McFarland retired in
- 5:43Speaker 6: two thousand and one and I applied for the job
- 5:45Speaker 6: and took his place.
- 5:46Speaker 5: And so.
- 5:48Speaker 6: It's a sense of purpose an advocation for me, rather
- 5:51Speaker 6: than the vocation.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I want to talk about your journey to get where
- 5:56Speaker 3: you are and how you wanted to give back, because
- 5:59Speaker 3: so many times I think when people are trying to
- 6:01Speaker 3: overcome anything, it doesn't matter whether it's drugs, alcohol, whatever.
- 6:06Speaker 3: You know, people sometimes I guess they find themselves talking
- 6:11Speaker 3: to people that they can't relate to. You know, you've
- 6:13Speaker 3: never been in my shoes. But in your case, Dick,
- 6:16Speaker 3: you have been in these people's shoes.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 6:20Speaker 6: I've been in their shoes and I've been right exactly
- 6:24Speaker 6: where they are. And in fact, this past weekend, I
- 6:27Speaker 6: spent the in Pinehurst, North Carolina, at a fraternity reunion.
- 6:31Speaker 5: I was a member the or.
- 6:33Speaker 6: I am a member of the Phi capha Psi fraternity
- 6:35Speaker 6: from in Morgantown, West Virginia, Alpha.
- 6:37Speaker 5: And.
- 6:39Speaker 6: My addiction to alcohol blossomed while I was in college,
- 6:44Speaker 6: and I went to this reunion with we had ninety
- 6:47Speaker 6: men from the middle seventies to the early eighties, and
- 6:51Speaker 6: half of them said, Captain Dick, I'm surprised you're still alive,
- 6:55Speaker 6: because they knew me as the drunk captain and you know,
- 6:59Speaker 6: I got so it up several years ago. And they
- 7:01Speaker 6: and and they, you know, they're all happy to see me,
- 7:03Speaker 6: and they were, they were, you know, pleased to see
- 7:05Speaker 6: that I was doing well. And I told them about
- 7:07Speaker 6: our mission and what we do to help men, and
- 7:10Speaker 6: you know, so it's because of that I've been active
- 7:13Speaker 6: in recovery ever since then. And part of our the
- 7:16Speaker 6: steps is the twelfth step in the in twelve step,
- 7:20Speaker 6: recovery is having had a spiritual awakening as the result
- 7:22Speaker 6: of these steps. We tried to practice these We try
- 7:24Speaker 6: to stay sober and practice these principles and all our affairs,
- 7:28Speaker 6: so we you know, one day at a time. We
- 7:29Speaker 6: don't drink, we don't drug, and we practiced the principles
- 7:33Speaker 6: that we learned through the steps and that's that's part
- 7:35Speaker 6: part of the recovery process. So I get to be
- 7:36Speaker 6: a part of it because I've been through it.
- 7:38Speaker 3: And I would I would imagine again and we'll move
- 7:41Speaker 3: on from it from your story, but I would imagine
- 7:43Speaker 3: again that that these men that are in these homes
- 7:46Speaker 3: are looking at you going okay, well I can I
- 7:48Speaker 3: can relate to this guy?
- 7:50Speaker 5: You know, well I have gray hair, so is that
- 7:53Speaker 5: what it is?
- 7:54Speaker 6: But yeah, they think I'm their their grandfather.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Right, that's or whatever it takes. Hey, Dave Island Showing
- 7:59Speaker 3: five eighty line is brought to you part by Meekx
- 8:01Speaker 3: Realty Group where you can unlock your dream property. Rich
- 8:03Speaker 3: the Realtor makes real estate dreams a reality, whether it's
- 8:06Speaker 3: residential or commercial. They have Charleston to Huntings and covered
- 8:09Speaker 3: Meeks Realty Group. Your journey home begins with them. Contact
- 8:12Speaker 3: Rich the Realtor three zero four nine three two seventy
- 8:15Speaker 3: four eighty eight or email our client that's client with
- 8:17Speaker 3: a k at Meeksrealtygroup. Dot com one of the things
- 8:21Speaker 3: that you mentioned there and in reading about your organization
- 8:23Speaker 3: as I was getting ready for the show, you talked
- 8:26Speaker 3: about these words structure, action, and accountability. Why are those
- 8:31Speaker 3: things so important? And give me a definition as it
- 8:34Speaker 3: pertains to the Sober Living Facility what those things mean.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Well, those are the catchphrase for what basically what we do.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Because men that are mired in addiction, they're shackled to
- 8:47Speaker 6: a disease. We you know, American Medical Association defined are
- 8:51Speaker 6: they They said that alcoholism addiction to alcohol was a
- 8:56Speaker 6: disease back in nineteen fifty five. And drugs that particularly,
- 9:02Speaker 6: you know, the drugs of late the opioid crisis and
- 9:05Speaker 6: the settlement fund that happened because of the APU week
- 9:07Speaker 6: crisis with you know, and that's turned into a heroin crisis,
- 9:10Speaker 6: has turned into a funnel crisis that's turned into just
- 9:13Speaker 6: these other drugs that people become addicted to. When men
- 9:17Speaker 6: get in a situation where they're they're hopelessly addicted, they'll
- 9:21Speaker 6: do things that are out of character and out of
- 9:23Speaker 6: there what they were raised and trained to do, and
- 9:26Speaker 6: they become they lead an unstructured life. They need to
- 9:29Speaker 6: learn how to get up and make their bed. We
- 9:31Speaker 6: provide structure for that. We provide three meals a day,
- 9:35Speaker 6: We provide addiction counseling, provide a lot of things.
- 9:38Speaker 5: You know, we take action.
- 9:40Speaker 6: We go to twelve step meetings, we go to AA
- 9:42Speaker 6: and n A, and we go to celebrate recovery. We've
- 9:44Speaker 6: got any kind of a twelve step recovery meeting. Or
- 9:46Speaker 6: if we go to church, if we find help in church,
- 9:49Speaker 6: we encourage that. We so we take action and then
- 9:54Speaker 6: we we're accountable to one another. We drug test our men,
- 9:57Speaker 6: and you know, routinely randomly on a week basis. They
- 10:00Speaker 6: don't know when it's going to happen. So in the
- 10:03Speaker 6: beginning phases, when they still have cravings, we want to
- 10:05Speaker 6: make sure that they you know, they got to have
- 10:08Speaker 6: a desire to want to be with us. And when
- 10:09Speaker 6: they when we when we test them, they that makes
- 10:13Speaker 6: them feel comfortable. So there it's a sober environment where
- 10:15Speaker 6: they're safe. We don't lock our doors on the inside.
- 10:20Speaker 6: We you know, we we're accountable to one another in
- 10:22Speaker 6: the house and and we we just practice.
- 10:25Speaker 5: Good wholesome basically wholesome living.
- 10:27Speaker 6: We learned how making our bed, believe it or not
- 10:30Speaker 6: making your bed start your day right, You say your
- 10:32Speaker 6: prayers and make your bed when you come home that evening.
- 10:35Speaker 6: If you've had a bad day and you come in
- 10:36Speaker 6: home into a nice room with a made bed, you
- 10:38Speaker 6: can lay down and take a nap. And it's just
- 10:41Speaker 6: organized as reorganize the things that gets on here.
- 10:43Speaker 3: It's about much more than making the bed correct. It's
- 10:46Speaker 3: it's it's kind of symbolism a little bit. It just
- 10:48Speaker 3: said it kind of it kind of starts your day.
- 10:49Speaker 3: If you had to guess Nick, over the years, give
- 10:53Speaker 3: me a ballpark, how many how many men you've been
- 10:55Speaker 3: able to help?
- 10:56Speaker 5: Uh?
- 10:57Speaker 6: We Well, we have records and we we the older
- 11:01Speaker 6: records are not as good as the new records, but
- 11:02Speaker 6: we've helped over two thousand men find sobriety and recovery
- 11:07Speaker 6: over this since nineteen sixty seven.
- 11:10Speaker 3: How difficult is it to get in there? And what's
- 11:13Speaker 3: the process like, Because that's what we hear a lot
- 11:16Speaker 3: with people that are addicts. I'll say, well, I you
- 11:19Speaker 3: know them, or their family will say, well, we want
- 11:21Speaker 3: to get help, but there's no beds available. How difficult
- 11:24Speaker 3: and what's the process like to get in.
- 11:26Speaker 6: Well, the process with us It starts with an application
- 11:30Speaker 6: and so it's on our website. It's kV FH dot
- 11:34Speaker 6: o RG. That's our initials. Canall Value Fellowship Home dot org.
- 11:38Speaker 6: And there's an application process. You fill the application out
- 11:41Speaker 6: that goes directly to my computer. We review the application
- 11:45Speaker 6: with the house manager and some of the other people
- 11:47Speaker 6: the team at our house, and we do an interview
- 11:50Speaker 6: and sometimes we do two interviews with people. We usually
- 11:53Speaker 6: have right now, we have a waiting list to get
- 11:55Speaker 6: in our house, and that's true when we've heard the
- 11:58Speaker 6: rumors that it is true. It's hard to get in,
- 12:00Speaker 6: especially in a nice facility like ours, and we look
- 12:05Speaker 6: for people they're serious. We want to hear that they're
- 12:07Speaker 6: not just wanting to get out of jail, or they're
- 12:09Speaker 6: not wanting to get their wife back, or they're not
- 12:11Speaker 6: wanting to you know, they're doing it for their because
- 12:13Speaker 6: they want to get better from their no'm me.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Jump in here. What do you look for if you're
- 12:17Speaker 3: having a set down with these men that lets you
- 12:21Speaker 3: know or let your staff know, this guy is really serious.
- 12:24Speaker 3: This guy's just not trying to get his family back
- 12:26Speaker 3: or trying to stay out of jail. To make you know,
- 12:28Speaker 3: to make the parole officer happy or whatever. What what
- 12:31Speaker 3: do you see in their eyes? What do you what
- 12:33Speaker 3: do you pick up on that says, hey, this guy
- 12:36Speaker 3: is legit, this guy's a real deal.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Well willingness, willingness to do whatever there is, suggested our
- 12:44Speaker 6: assistant manager House director, Jay has been with us nineteen
- 12:47Speaker 6: years and he he can sniff out bs. Basically it's good.
- 12:53Speaker 3: But that's the scientific term.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Yes, so he can tell one of guys not authentic.
- 12:59Speaker 6: And you know, we're not perfect. We can't tell that
- 13:02Speaker 6: every time. You know, we we we're you know, we're
- 13:04Speaker 6: impostors and we can put on.
- 13:05Speaker 5: A good show.
- 13:06Speaker 6: But but we look for the guys that are serious
- 13:09Speaker 6: and we talked to them. One of the questions is
- 13:11Speaker 6: are you willing to do anything steak to get sober?
- 13:14Speaker 6: We can say sober and you know, if the answer
- 13:16Speaker 6: is yes, are you willing to work at a fast
- 13:18Speaker 6: food restaurant? Because all our men, after they're there for
- 13:20Speaker 6: two weeks, they have to get a job within two
- 13:22Speaker 6: weeks and they pay a small program feed. That's another
- 13:25Speaker 6: accountable thing that they do is pay a program fee
- 13:27Speaker 6: to offset our cost of operating the facility. And you know,
- 13:31Speaker 6: if they say they're willing to work at McDonald's and
- 13:32Speaker 6: flip Hamburgers. If that's what it takes, then that's a
- 13:35Speaker 6: good sign. When they say no, I you know, I
- 13:37Speaker 6: have an accounting degree. I want to you know, I'm
- 13:39Speaker 6: going to go back to arenot fosters to an accounting firm?
- 13:43Speaker 6: You know, we want the guys that are going to
- 13:44Speaker 6: come in because we want them to get a job.
- 13:46Speaker 6: We often tell them their jobs have to fit into
- 13:49Speaker 6: our program because their sobriety comes first. So we say
- 13:53Speaker 6: that that you have to get a job, not the job.
- 13:57Speaker 3: You'll get the job later on. And so it's just steps.
- 14:00Speaker 3: It's like it's like steps of a ladder. I mean,
- 14:03Speaker 3: you've got to start at the bottom and kind of
- 14:04Speaker 3: work your way up. What you talked about the number
- 14:07Speaker 3: of men that you've seen, Can you give me a
- 14:10Speaker 3: success rate or.
- 14:12Speaker 6: I can by that statistically, I can qualify it, Yes, sir,
- 14:16Speaker 6: there's a there's a nice video on our website and
- 14:18Speaker 6: there's some YouTube videos that Josh Lewis did for our
- 14:21Speaker 6: recent fundraiser. But what we found is that our minimum
- 14:26Speaker 6: commitments six months if you come and stay at knaw
- 14:28Speaker 6: Valley Fellowship poem for six months, your chances of maintaining,
- 14:32Speaker 6: staying and maintaining sobriety as long as you stay in
- 14:35Speaker 6: recovery is one and three. It's thirty three percent. That's
- 14:39Speaker 6: that's a pretty that's a statistic that is real. But
- 14:43Speaker 6: if you stay with us a year, we believe that
- 14:45Speaker 6: a minimum really should be a year. If you experienced
- 14:48Speaker 6: four seasons, your birthdays, your grandmother's death, your the new job,
- 14:53Speaker 6: a baby being born, somebody you know, a tragedy, or
- 14:57Speaker 6: a big life event, and you've experienced all four seasons,
- 15:00Speaker 6: there's something about it, a magical about a year. If
- 15:03Speaker 6: you get a year sobriety and you stay with us
- 15:05Speaker 6: and you stay active in recovery, you'r changing to go
- 15:07Speaker 6: up to seventy percent. And the caveat is staying active
- 15:11Speaker 6: in recovery. We you know, part of our mission, part
- 15:14Speaker 6: of that action and accountability is getting involved in the
- 15:17Speaker 6: recovery process. And there's a recovery community here in the
- 15:20Speaker 6: Kanal Valley that is the biggest in West Virginia, and
- 15:24Speaker 6: there are people that will help you, and you get
- 15:26Speaker 6: to help people. After you've been helped, you get to
- 15:27Speaker 6: help people. And so we the success is that you
- 15:31Speaker 6: know that we you know, we worked that twelve step.
- 15:34Speaker 6: We carry the message to the sick and suffering, and
- 15:36Speaker 6: so if you stay with us for three years, we
- 15:39Speaker 6: have sober living apartments and a lot of men have
- 15:41Speaker 6: to get their CPS cases taken care of.
- 15:43Speaker 5: They've got to get their teeth fixed.
- 15:44Speaker 6: We help them get their teeth fixed through grants here
- 15:46Speaker 6: in the valley through the Greater Canal Valley Foundation and
- 15:50Speaker 6: the Palatine Foundation.
- 15:51Speaker 5: We do.
- 15:52Speaker 6: The United Ways a big supporter of ours, and they
- 15:55Speaker 6: help us with basic needs, and so we collaborate with
- 15:58Speaker 6: different people West Virginia Health Right people in the community.
- 16:02Speaker 6: If we keep them three years and they're active in
- 16:04Speaker 6: our program and they're given back and they keep going
- 16:07Speaker 6: to meetings, they keep doing the things that they understand,

- 20:05Speaker 3: Well not yet, No, now it does, and I'm sorry.
- 20:07Speaker 3: So the Governor UH has been having a lot of
- 20:10Speaker 3: press events lately, which is good for the press covering it.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Though generally speaking, when I hear from from some of
- 20:16Speaker 3: you folks is you don't always know what the subject
- 20:18Speaker 3: of said pressers is until you get there, or you
- 20:21Speaker 3: tune in online or whatever. Yesterday kind of that way,
- 20:23Speaker 3: in Bridgeport, and Mike Nolton covered He writes about at
- 20:26Speaker 3: wv metronews dot com, the governor calling it a new
- 20:30Speaker 3: way to think about roads, bridges, et cetera in West Virginia.
- 20:33Speaker 3: What did you take from it?
- 20:36Speaker 9: I did watch it, as you said, Metro News intrepid
- 20:39Speaker 9: reporter Mike Milton was there on scene.
- 20:43Speaker 7: Uh.
- 20:43Speaker 9: I will just say from a basic and maybe not
- 20:46Speaker 9: very interesting viewpoint, it was hard to hear the audio.
- 20:49Speaker 9: Uh it was it was kind of hard to make
- 20:51Speaker 9: out what it was outside. It was breezy. It seemed
- 20:54Speaker 9: like there was maybe a little bit of a microphone
- 20:56Speaker 9: connection problem. But the governor, the current governor, does want
- 21:01Speaker 9: to make highway maintenance a priority, had lots of people
- 21:06Speaker 9: there backing them up. I think it's one that resonates
- 21:09Speaker 9: with West Virginian's You know, we had a former flagship
- 21:15Speaker 9: talk show program host who presented the listeners with hashtag
- 21:22Speaker 9: ft d R fixed the darn roads. The prior governor,
- 21:27Speaker 9: i would say, also made an emphasis of highway and
- 21:33Speaker 9: bridge maintenance, construction and repair. However, this governor drew a
- 21:40Speaker 9: distinction yesterday and said that much of the work under
- 21:44Speaker 9: the prior governor this is me paraphrasing, was inefficient. Had
- 21:49Speaker 9: some criticism for Roads to Prosperity. If you'll remember Roads
- 21:54Speaker 9: to Prosperity, that there was a statewide vote on the
- 21:58Speaker 9: authorization of those bonds, occurred on a Saturday. It was
- 22:01Speaker 9: fairly low turnout. That money then was meant to be
- 22:07Speaker 9: used for I'm being critical of Morsey sound and now
- 22:11Speaker 9: I can hear my own audio crackling. Anyway. The more
- 22:17Speaker 9: the critique is that that money got used fast and
- 22:23Speaker 9: there are still many years ahead of to pay those
- 22:30Speaker 9: bonds down. And he said that means that for governors
- 22:32Speaker 9: like him in the future, the money is limited, but
- 22:35Speaker 9: he intends to take a data driven approach to the
- 22:39Speaker 9: kind of highway repair people expect.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Here's a fun fact on that Roads to Prosperity election,
- 22:44Speaker 3: which you mentioned was on summer in twenty eighteen. That
- 22:47Speaker 3: was the first election in the state of West Virginia
- 22:49Speaker 3: to require voter I d I just thought you should
- 22:53Speaker 3: know that that's a fun fact. I learned my time
- 22:55Speaker 3: in say government.
- 22:57Speaker 9: Fun fact, and it was a good test case because
- 23:00Speaker 9: the actual participation on that Saturday election, which as I recall,
- 23:05Speaker 9: was a heavy football watching Saturday. Yeah, it was it
- 23:09Speaker 9: was a fairly low turnout. Yeah, very and for good
- 23:13Speaker 9: or bad, West Virginia has the consequences have been that
- 23:17Speaker 9: the state drew down millions of dollars in road bonds
- 23:22Speaker 9: and built a bunch of new roads. In the meantime,
- 23:28Speaker 9: it feels like, I mean, this is this is anecdotal
- 23:32Speaker 9: for me. It feels like people's complaints about the highway
- 23:36Speaker 9: quality has has not gone down.
- 23:39Speaker 3: And what I gathered in listening later and we've actually
- 23:42Speaker 3: played back some of that audio on Metro News midday afterday, Brad,
- 23:45Speaker 3: what I gathered is the governor again, like you, I
- 23:48Speaker 3: don't want to paraphrase, but I think what I what
- 23:50Speaker 3: I gathered from this, Brad from the governor is that, Okay,
- 23:53Speaker 3: it's great that we have built new roads, but what
- 23:55Speaker 3: about the roads we have now? Not everybody, I mean
- 23:59Speaker 3: I travel on an interstate every day to come to work,
- 24:01Speaker 3: but also travel on some non interstate roads that are
- 24:03Speaker 3: in pretty horrible shape right now to get to the interstates.
- 24:07Speaker 3: And I think that's what a lot of people have
- 24:11Speaker 3: concerns with. Is that what you hear as well as
- 24:14Speaker 3: some of these I mean the back roads, the hollow roads, whatever,
- 24:18Speaker 3: are are in pretty pretty crappy shape, Brad.
- 24:22Speaker 9: Yeah, potholes, grain edge, the I mean even the major highways.
- 24:29Speaker 9: There's bobly construction going on, but there's orange cones everywhere,
- 24:32Speaker 9: and I think as a it might not be the intent,
- 24:36Speaker 9: but I think what you hear as a critique of
- 24:38Speaker 9: that is we're not ever going to finish this. There's
- 24:40Speaker 9: been orange cones for a weeks. I have to go
- 24:43Speaker 9: thirty in the fifty zone all the time.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean certainly, Yeah, those of us here
- 24:49Speaker 3: in the Kanaw Valley in anytime you travel what we
- 24:51Speaker 3: call Advantage Valley from Huntington to Charleston, you'll certainly realize

- 25:05Speaker 3: house out there tonight. I'll give you a quote here, Brad.
- 25:09Speaker 3: This is from the governor yesterday. There were some divisions
- 25:11Speaker 3: within the state Department of Transportation that have five assistant
- 25:15Speaker 3: directors and in most cases it was unnecessary. In quote, now, Brad,
- 25:20Speaker 3: you start talking about taking away some of the bureaudic
- 25:23Speaker 3: the bureaucratic jobs, if that, if that's what they were,
- 25:26Speaker 3: and for those some of those in state government, them's
- 25:29Speaker 3: fighting words. Buddy.
- 25:32Speaker 9: Uh, you know, I it was an interesting thing you
- 25:35Speaker 9: pointed out. I guess, I guess I would like to
- 25:37Speaker 9: hear more about specifics. It felt like early in the
- 25:43Speaker 9: Justice administration there actually was a problem employing enough people
- 25:48Speaker 9: in highways, particularly engineers. A lot of them had left
- 25:52Speaker 9: and Justice was trying to hire more. Justice Justice had
- 25:57Speaker 9: practically a meme of complaining that the Mansion administration had
- 26:02Speaker 9: gotten rid of all the great alls the highway equipment.
- 26:06Speaker 9: Justice was very upset about the acquisition of grade alls. So,
- 26:10Speaker 9: I mean, it's it's all in eurovision of what the
- 26:13Speaker 9: department should be, and it's efficiency levels and what's required
- 26:17Speaker 9: to do a good job. Clearly, Governor Morrissey has a
- 26:21Speaker 9: different view of that than its predecessor, and has blamed
- 26:26Speaker 9: his predecessor for some of the structure, some of the priorities.
- 26:33Speaker 9: That doesn't surprise me, you know, when it's somebody a
- 26:36Speaker 9: relatively new office holder able to say, oh, the previous
- 26:40Speaker 9: administration didn't do it right, it's it comes across I
- 26:44Speaker 9: think as more more sort of grassroots, more more natural
- 26:51Speaker 9: when the prior administration was the opposite party. When it's
- 26:55Speaker 9: the same party, are you guys on the same team
- 26:58Speaker 9: or not?
- 27:01Speaker 3: But it started out being the opposite party, you know,
- 27:04Speaker 3: in the before the governor made to switch over from
- 27:07Speaker 3: from uh, from Democrat to a Republican as he did.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I don't know, Brad, It just seems to me, And
- 27:12Speaker 3: that's a very good point. You reference that. How Jim Justice,
- 27:16Speaker 3: you know, at some point would would take a shot
- 27:18Speaker 3: maybe at previous administrations.
- 27:20Speaker 9: Uh.
- 27:20Speaker 3: But it seems to me and he never comes out
- 27:24Speaker 3: that I've heard anyway. He never Governor Morrissey never comes
- 27:27Speaker 3: out and mentions the Justice administration by name. But it
- 27:31Speaker 3: seems to me, bubbling under the surface there that there
- 27:34Speaker 3: might be some some bad blood still there, because it
- 27:38Speaker 3: seems like every opportunity right or wrong, that the governor, uh,
- 27:42Speaker 3: the current Governor Morrissey gets cast a little shade over
- 27:45Speaker 3: on the previous administration of now Senator than Governor Jim Justice,
- 27:49Speaker 3: like he kind of takes that opportunity. Is that what
- 27:51Speaker 3: you see as well?
- 27:54Speaker 9: I mean, it feels like there are there are invitations
- 27:59Speaker 9: to comparison, and I mean Morrissey has his own idea
- 28:03Speaker 9: of his administration's priorities and its values. But this was
- 28:08Speaker 9: an example yesterday of drawing a comparison with what the
- 28:12Speaker 9: Justice administration had done, in particular being critical of Roads
- 28:15Speaker 9: to Prosperity. I should say that Metro News Midday, which
- 28:20Speaker 9: is the program that you co host, reached out to
- 28:22Speaker 9: the to now Senator Justice. His staff provided a response
- 28:27Speaker 9: which was, you know, fairly gracious, just you know, they
- 28:31Speaker 9: supported Roads to Prosperity. Thought I got a lot done.
- 28:34Speaker 9: But there have been other instances. I mean, within a
- 28:37Speaker 9: week of taking office, Governor Morrissey pointed to what he
- 28:43Speaker 9: called a four hundred million dollar gap in the upcoming
- 28:45Speaker 9: budget year. He was pointing towards the budget year that
- 28:48Speaker 9: begins this July first, and said that his administration isn't
- 28:54Speaker 9: going to fill those gaps with one time dollars. So
- 28:58Speaker 9: that was the first line in the sand where Morrisy
- 29:02Speaker 9: said we're going to do it differently and was, you know,
- 29:04Speaker 9: critical of the way Justice had done the budgeting. Didn't
- 29:08Speaker 9: mention Justice by name, but that's what you took away
- 29:12Speaker 9: last week or the week before. There was a press
- 29:14Speaker 9: conference where Governor Morrissey said that his administration is going
- 29:19Speaker 9: to be more open about questions regarding child welfare and
- 29:24Speaker 9: outlined some other things, but again without naming Justice. He
- 29:28Speaker 9: was critical of that administration, described it as being too
- 29:32Speaker 9: closed down. So there have been yes, instance after instance,
- 29:38Speaker 9: and I mean, it's it's it's intriguing the conflict. It
- 29:43Speaker 9: is a little bit awkward because it is one big
- 29:46Speaker 9: Republican tent with these guys, and Jim Justice hasn't gone away.
- 29:50Speaker 9: He's now a US Senator, so he's, you know, right
- 29:53Speaker 9: there taking part in our politics.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I had somebody who is in the Republican Party said,
- 30:00Speaker 3: and they're not in a position of leadership, but they
- 30:02Speaker 3: are a Republican that said to me the other day,
- 30:05Speaker 3: are in a conversation not on the air, that said,
- 30:09Speaker 3: people can say what they want about about Jim Justice
- 30:12Speaker 3: at the time he was governor, but he had one
- 30:14Speaker 3: of the depending on which pole, you look at the
- 30:16Speaker 3: top three or four approval ratings of any governor in
- 30:19Speaker 3: America at one point, and they were asking would the
- 30:26Speaker 3: has there been any approval rating type polls out yet
- 30:29Speaker 3: from blankenshep or others. Uh, that's Mark not don about
- 30:35Speaker 3: the approval of approval rating of Governor Morrisey and how
- 30:39Speaker 3: the two would would compare to each other. I mean,
- 30:42Speaker 3: and to be fair, you know, Governor Morsey just took
- 30:44Speaker 3: office a few months ago and the session just wrapped
- 30:46Speaker 3: up and so on and so forth. Uh, but I mean,
- 30:48Speaker 3: I'm just kind of curious as to as to what
- 30:50Speaker 3: those would look like.
- 30:53Speaker 9: Let me buy myself some time because I am using
- 30:56Speaker 9: my search engine.
- 30:57Speaker 3: But well, while you do that, let me just say
- 30:59Speaker 3: this Island Show on five eighty lives broad to a
- 31:01Speaker 3: good part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty

- 31:22Speaker 9: Oh thanks, yet I have failed to use it. So
- 31:28Speaker 9: let me let me just say maybe that I was
- 31:32Speaker 9: trying to look up Morning Consults, governor rankings and what
- 31:35Speaker 9: I came up with was Morning Consult Pro, which makes
- 31:38Speaker 9: you pay for a subscription, and we ain't doing it,
- 31:40Speaker 9: and well I don't have one, but we're still.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Trying to pay for the studio here.
- 31:45Speaker 9: So you know, uh, but I did see one from
- 31:50Speaker 9: Morning Consults.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I thought, okay, well, I'll tell you what we can.
- 31:54Speaker 3: We can look that up and and maybe get a
- 31:57Speaker 3: result to somebody at a at a future time. How's that?
- 31:59Speaker 3: I do want to ask you about.
- 32:01Speaker 9: This multi states? It wasn't Morning Consult, it's multi state.
- 32:11Speaker 9: Has Morrisey fairly well, number tied for number seventeen in
- 32:18Speaker 9: America and popularity overall. Let's see, I'm trying to read
- 32:24Speaker 9: the church as I.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Mean, really, Brad, that's not bad. That's not bad at all.
- 32:30Speaker 9: No, it's not bad at all.
- 32:31Speaker 3: It's not Jim Justice numbers. But again, to be fair
- 32:34Speaker 3: to the governor, he just his administration just took over
- 32:37Speaker 3: a few months ago, so that there's time to get there.
- 32:40Speaker 9: Yeah, and you know, Morrissey won with a plurality. It
- 32:46Speaker 9: was well, he won he won the primary, which West
- 32:49Speaker 9: Virginia is back to that being the main election. He
- 32:52Speaker 9: won the primary in a plurality among you know, four
- 32:55Speaker 9: leading candidates, so it was reasonable to split that. But
- 33:00Speaker 9: then you know one but general election fairly overwhelmingly, and
- 33:06Speaker 9: I will, I will send this to your I'm going
- 33:11Speaker 9: to send this to Dave Allen's phone. I happen to
- 33:13Speaker 9: know the number, okay, and then if you want to
- 33:17Speaker 9: play around.
- 33:17Speaker 3: With it, I will. I've had the same cell phone
- 33:20Speaker 3: numbers since like nineteen ninety seven, so everybody knows Dave
- 33:22Speaker 3: out all right, all right, all right, before we let
- 33:26Speaker 3: you go, I always ask you, what else are you
- 33:28Speaker 3: looking at today? That's kind of a running joke between
- 33:31Speaker 3: me and you. But I know what people were looking
- 33:33Speaker 3: at yesterday is about ten thousand gallons of water flowing
- 33:37Speaker 3: through the Capitol basement where people like you and Steven Allen,
- 33:41Speaker 3: Adams and Amelia a Million nicely and others work from.
- 33:46Speaker 3: You know, it's kind of an off season, so I
- 33:47Speaker 3: don't know that anybody. Well, Stephen was probably there because
- 33:51Speaker 3: I think he actually made the call to Jeff Jenkins
- 33:52Speaker 3: and said, hey, we got a mess out here. I
- 33:54Speaker 3: actually did talk to Mike Queen with the Secretary of
- 33:58Speaker 3: State's office a little bit earlier, and that the basement
- 34:01Speaker 3: area houses not only the press room, but also the
- 34:05Speaker 3: I T Department for the Secretary of State's office and
- 34:08Speaker 3: several other facilities. I think what the title was, but
- 34:11Speaker 3: it's like a legislative services or something is down there
- 34:14Speaker 3: as well. What are you hearing about this mess at
- 34:16Speaker 3: the capitol yesterday? I know they're working to clean it up,
- 34:18Speaker 3: but it was a mess yesterday. We got a picture,
- 34:20Speaker 3: as a matter of fact, posted a WV metro news
- 34:23Speaker 3: dot com about it.

- 45:25Speaker 3: years of age, convicted of killing four family members back
- 45:27Speaker 3: in two thousand.
- 45:28Speaker 13: Now.
- 45:28Speaker 3: The conviction came in twenty twenty two on three counts
- 45:33Speaker 3: of first degree murder, one count of second degree murder,
- 45:36Speaker 3: and one count of using a firearm during the commission
- 45:38Speaker 3: of a felony. He was sentenced to three life sentences
- 45:43Speaker 3: with mercy, with an additional fifty years now. He was
- 45:47Speaker 3: granted mercy because he was a juvenile and state law
- 45:51Speaker 3: does not allow for a juvenile to be sentenced to
- 45:53Speaker 3: life without mercy. He was, however, tried as an adult now.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Smith was sixteen at the time and was accused of
- 46:01Speaker 3: shooting and killing his stepfather, his mother, and two young brothers.
- 46:05Speaker 3: One was twelve and the other was three. This took
- 46:08Speaker 3: place on Cemetery Hill in Elkview. Hold the phone, though,
- 46:12Speaker 3: because yesterday the State Supreme Court of Appeals ruled to
- 46:16Speaker 3: vacate the sentence, claiming that the Kanawha County Circuit Court
- 46:21Speaker 3: messed up, saying that the court improperly informed the jury
- 46:26Speaker 3: that if Smith were to be convicted a first degree murder,
- 46:30Speaker 3: he would be eligible for parole because of his juvenile status. Now,
- 46:36Speaker 3: Justice Haley Bunn wrote the majority opinion, while Justice Tim
- 46:40Speaker 3: Armstea Armstead dissented. Both opinions are contained as part of
- 46:44Speaker 3: Aaron Parker's story at wv Metronews dot com. So it
- 46:48Speaker 3: looks like Smith is now going to get a new trial.
- 46:51Speaker 3: And you know, I'm no legal expert, and by the way,
- 46:54Speaker 3: no datesmen set for the triphy. I'm not a legal expert,
- 46:57Speaker 3: but I think what I'm reading into the story here
- 47:02Speaker 3: is that by simply uttering that in court, it makes
- 47:07Speaker 3: the whole thing null and void. And so he's going
- 47:10Speaker 3: to get a new trial. And this is the guy again,
- 47:12Speaker 3: he was sixteen at the time that he is alleged
- 47:16Speaker 3: to I guess I have to go back to saying
- 47:17Speaker 3: the ledge now alleged of committing the crime. So now
- 47:21Speaker 3: there's going to be a totally new trial. No date
- 47:23Speaker 3: has been set. He is accused again of killing his
- 47:26Speaker 3: mother's stepfather and two siblings, one of which was only
- 47:29Speaker 3: three years old. It happened on a cemetery here hill
- 47:32Speaker 3: at Elview. So an interesting story. Indeed, Aaron Parker did
- 47:36Speaker 3: a great job with it over at the website wvmetronews
- 47:39Speaker 3: dot com. And continuing with the crime blotterer, this one
- 47:42Speaker 3: from South Charleston Police say a man was stabbed several times,
- 47:46Speaker 3: apparently a domestic dispute early this morning. It was reported
- 47:49Speaker 3: at around three point thirty this morning at an apartment
- 47:53Speaker 3: complex and the twelve hundred block of East Village Drive
- 47:55Speaker 3: in South Charleston. Man and woman involved. Apparently the man
- 47:58Speaker 3: was stabbed up to fourteen times. The woman also injured.
- 48:01Speaker 3: And that's all the information at this time that we
- 48:03Speaker 3: have available. We will have more, of course, available on
- 48:06Speaker 3: the website when it becomes public knowledge and statements are released.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Text says props to John Fetterman for calling out his
- 48:15Speaker 3: party for refusing to condemn these riots. Oh that's right,
- 48:19Speaker 3: it's not January sixth, so they're perfectly cool with all this.
- 48:22Speaker 3: In fact, many are actually defending these domestic terrorists. Exactly
- 48:26Speaker 3: why I walked away years ago. I'm presuming the texture
- 48:28Speaker 3: mean they walked away from the Democratic Party. Look I
- 48:32Speaker 3: I I don't. I don't disagree with anything the text
- 48:35Speaker 3: are said at all. I don't agree. I don't. I
- 48:39Speaker 3: have questions about the way the Trump administration is handling it.
- 48:43Speaker 3: But as far as as as the unlawfulness that is
- 48:48Speaker 3: going on there, I have no issue with cracking down
- 48:51Speaker 3: at all on that. I just have I have some
- 48:53Speaker 3: quite I don't even have issues. I think I have
- 48:55Speaker 3: questions on the way the Trump administration is handling I
- 48:58Speaker 3: do find it very is heartening, though to hear the
- 49:02Speaker 3: president he actually yesterday used the term insurrection of talking
- 49:07Speaker 3: about what's going on out there in Los Angeles and
- 49:11Speaker 3: those that failed to see the correlation between Los Angeles
- 49:14Speaker 3: and January sixth, I can't understand your thinking on that,
- 49:18Speaker 3: although it was a I guess a much, but I mean,
- 49:21Speaker 3: what you're seeing on television is about a two to
- 49:24Speaker 3: three block area of Los Angeles. This is not widespread,
- 49:28Speaker 3: and I'm not defending it by any stretch of the imagination,
- 49:31Speaker 3: but it's this is not like they're burning down Rodeo
- 49:33Speaker 3: or Beverly Hills. You know, like Danny and I talked
- 49:36Speaker 3: about on the show yesterday, where he spends a lot
- 49:39Speaker 3: of time an hour away, there's nothing going on. It
- 49:41Speaker 3: seems to be in this area. But you know, I'm
- 49:46Speaker 3: not defending what's going on out there at all, but
- 49:48Speaker 3: I'll tell you one thing I would like to see.
- 49:52Speaker 3: We talk a lot in this country about illegal immigration,
- 49:55Speaker 3: which is a major problem, and I say crackdown on
- 49:57Speaker 3: at one hundred percent. But I'm talking about the people
- 50:01Speaker 3: that come here and want and actually want to contribute,
- 50:05Speaker 3: but haven't yet gone about it the legal way. I
- 50:09Speaker 3: would like to see in this country US go after
- 50:11Speaker 3: the people that are hiring them. And guess what their
- 50:16Speaker 3: the color of their skin ain't brown. You go to
- 50:20Speaker 3: any large city and you go buy your And I'm
- 50:22Speaker 3: not picking on home depot or lows. I'm just saying
- 50:24Speaker 3: any any large scale store like that, a hardware store,
- 50:29Speaker 3: number whatever. I saw it firsthand. I was in North
- 50:32Speaker 3: Carolina visiting some of my wife's family a couple of
- 50:35Speaker 3: years ago, and I think I mentioned on the show
- 50:37Speaker 3: I had my brother in law asked me to take
- 50:40Speaker 3: a ride down to a local home depot in North Carolina.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Not that I'm actually going to be able to, you know,
- 50:44Speaker 3: do anything with a hammer, but but I rode with
- 50:46Speaker 3: my brother in law, Johnny, in a pickup truck, so
- 50:49Speaker 3: that makes me tough. And we went to a local
- 50:51Speaker 3: home depot and I saw all these people standing around
- 50:53Speaker 3: and I see these contractors pulling up in other pickup
- 50:57Speaker 3: trucks and getting these people and put them on the
- 51:01Speaker 3: back of the truck and taking them out, And I think,
- 51:02Speaker 3: what's going on here? He goes, Oh, yeah, they're they're
- 51:04Speaker 3: illegal immigrants and they come here and the local contractors
- 51:08Speaker 3: come down pick them up and then take them and
- 51:09Speaker 3: put them to work. Okay, that's a crime in and
- 51:13Speaker 3: of itself. How about we go after those people too. Yeah,
- 51:17Speaker 3: we go after the people that are illegal immigrants. I
- 51:20Speaker 3: have no issue with that at all. But how about
- 51:22Speaker 3: we also go after the people that are hiring them,
- 51:24Speaker 3: and those aren't brown people, those are white people. Just say,
- 51:28Speaker 3: Jack says, why are the looters and rioters lumped in
- 51:30Speaker 3: with Democrats? They aren't flying flags with names of their
- 51:33Speaker 3: favorite politician, says a Texter TJ. Meadows flying the flag
