- 0:00Speaker 1: Ted, Clay Travis Law. Accidents don't wait for great timing.
- 0:06Speaker 1: One bad moment, you got a wreck, a fall, a
- 0:08Speaker 1: doctor who wasn't paying attention. Suddenly, you're fighting an insurance
- 0:12Speaker 1: company that does this every single day. And that's why
- 0:14Speaker 1: Clay started Clay Travis Law.
- 0:15Speaker 2: He's a Vanderbilt Law grad.
- 0:16Speaker 1: He built the firm around the idea that people deserve
- 0:18Speaker 1: someone willing to pay attention, ask the hard questions, push
- 0:22Speaker 1: back when things don't add up, experienced trial attorneys who
- 0:26Speaker 1: Bring the fight to corporations and insurers based in Nashville
- 0:29Speaker 1: and trusted across the country.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Car and truck wrecks, rideshare accidents, medical malpractice, premises liability,
- 0:34Speaker 3: product liability. If you were wrong, they want to hear
- 0:37Speaker 3: about it. Here's what they promise. Honesty. They don't sugarcoat
- 0:39Speaker 3: your case. You'll hear what it's actually worth, not what
- 0:42Speaker 3: you want to hear. Case evaluation is free. No charge,
- 0:45Speaker 3: no pressure, no hassle. Just tell them your story. Go
- 0:47Speaker 3: to claytravislaw.com or call 877-222-4444. That's claytravislaw.com. No case is
- 0:50Speaker 3: too big or too small.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hey, last we checked, Chad, the line in the Kentucky-LSU game,
- 1:00Speaker 1: it was LSU, was it 9.5?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Is that right? Hard Rock bet?
- 1:04Speaker 1: I think that's correct with LSU favored this week. I'll
- 1:08Speaker 1: go and check that right now.
- 1:09Speaker 3: It was the exact same as Ole Miss at Vandy,
- 1:11Speaker 3: and I think it's 9.5 for both. The road team's
- 1:13Speaker 3: favored by 9.5.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Well done, guys. There it is, 9.5.
- 1:16Speaker 1: A little steep is the way I look at that
- 1:20Speaker 1: with Kentucky. Kentucky's bringing back the retro– Power K helmets
- 1:25Speaker 1: this Saturday for the homecoming against the number 10 Tigers
- 1:30Speaker 1: this week.
- 1:30Speaker 2: It's a good look. Even perfect for Kroger Field.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, this is the Billy Jack Haskins Kentucky Wildcats look.
- 1:40Speaker 3: from quarterback back in the day, which even Jacob Lutz,
- 1:43Speaker 3: a resident Kentucky fan, probably doesn't remember him at quarterback.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It's a great look. This is what Kentucky should go with.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I like this. There are a number of jersey schemes,
- 1:54Speaker 3: color schemes, helmets that teams never should have abandoned that
- 1:58Speaker 3: they should go back to. I think this Kentucky look,
- 2:01Speaker 3: as they call the Power K, looks great, looks better
- 2:05Speaker 3: than their current uniforms. I think in the NFL, some
- 2:08Speaker 3: teams that come to mind, the Philadelphia Eagles should always
- 2:10Speaker 3: wear their Kelly Green jerseys. Going back to the Reggie White,
- 2:14Speaker 3: Buddy Ryan, Eagles days, looks way better. I think the
- 2:18Speaker 3: Denver Broncos older uniforms look better. I think anybody who
- 2:22Speaker 3: went to the darker blues or darker colors or darker
- 2:24Speaker 3: greens and away from their original colors looks worse than before.
- 2:29Speaker 3: The Seattle Seahawks are a great example. Their throwback uniforms
- 2:32Speaker 3: better than their current uniforms. Tampa Bay Buccaneers throwbacks better.
- 2:37Speaker 3: This throwback, to me, is superior than the current Kentucky helmet.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I love it.
- 2:41Speaker 3: The white helmet looks clean. The white helmet with the
- 2:43Speaker 3: blue K.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Think about Will Stein, because I believe his father played
- 2:47Speaker 1: for Kentucky during this era with just the power K
- 2:51Speaker 1: on the helmet. It would have been in the 80s.
- 2:54Speaker 1: How cool that's got to be for him to see that.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Just based on the fact that he's now the head coach,
- 3:01Speaker 1: And it brings back the childhood memories. Bones Fossil recently
- 3:04Speaker 1: went back to New York to face the Giants as
- 3:07Speaker 1: the Titans special teams coach. He's done that several times,
- 3:10Speaker 1: but he was like the ball boy. He would help
- 3:13Speaker 1: warm up the quarterbacks pregame for the Giants when his
- 3:16Speaker 1: father was there.
- 3:17Speaker 2: That's cool stuff, man.
- 3:18Speaker 1: The teams I was growing up with, the Braves and
- 3:25Speaker 1: all that stuff, and just knowing if you went back
- 3:27Speaker 1: to the old school Tennessee jerseys, you got the old school,
- 3:32Speaker 1: the Patino Kentucky basketball uniforms. If you watch that and
- 3:37Speaker 1: you're a fan of Kentucky and you go and you
- 3:38Speaker 1: see that, that's got to be pretty cool if you're
- 3:40Speaker 1: then involved with the program.
- 3:42Speaker 2: So well done by Will Scott.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I hate those Patino Kentucky, well at least the second one.
- 3:47Speaker 2: The denim ones?
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah, the denim ones are terrible. It was 96 or 98.
- 3:51Speaker 3: So 96 they won it with Patino, 98 they won
- 3:54Speaker 3: it with Tubby.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You're like the Jamal Mashburn era.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't like that version of it. I like
- 3:59Speaker 3: anything that's a little older. But, yeah, that white helmet
- 4:03Speaker 3: with the blue Power K looks terrific. So, Hutton, there
- 4:06Speaker 3: is a tie in here. Yeah, that's a good look.
- 4:08Speaker 3: I like a little more blue. I like that they
- 4:10Speaker 3: have the blue pants, I think, on the uniform they're
- 4:12Speaker 3: wearing this weekend. That's a little too much white in
- 4:14Speaker 3: the uniform for Kentucky.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But, yeah.
- 4:17Speaker 3: By the way, is that Jack Lambert they're playing against there?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Look at the linebacker that they're playing. The Pittsburgh Steelers
- 4:23Speaker 3: they're playing.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I believe that's Will's dad. Okay.
- 4:27Speaker 3: And that's Vanderbilt they're playing. I think I see a
- 4:30Speaker 3: star V on that. But it almost looks like the
- 4:32Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers that the Kentucky Wildcats are playing in that game.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Looks like a guy that's playing for Canyon County.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Hey, there's a tie-in here to a question I have.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Kentucky Wildcats. Could they be the Tampa Bay Rays of
- 4:43Speaker 3: college football? Because here's what we have in Major League
- 4:47Speaker 3: Baseball right now. We have the Tampa Bay Rays up
- 4:49Speaker 3: two games to none, going to New York, going to
- 4:51Speaker 3: the Bronx. to try to eliminate the New York Yankees.
- 4:54Speaker 3: The New York Yankees payroll is $ 301 million. The Tampa
- 5:00Speaker 3: Bay Rays payroll is $ 89 million. They are outspending the
- 5:06Speaker 3: Rays by 3x plus, even more than 3x, when you
- 5:11Speaker 3: look at their payroll compared to the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Could we even have this in college football right now?
- 5:16Speaker 3: And I know we're talking parity and, boy, all these
- 5:19Speaker 3: teams are good and everybody pays. And I do think
- 5:22Speaker 3: at the highest level, SEC and Big Ten, it's led
- 5:25Speaker 3: to some more parity where you're going to have more
- 5:27Speaker 3: of that. But the parity does not necessarily mean, okay,
- 5:31Speaker 3: teams that don't spin now are going to go win
- 5:34Speaker 3: a college football playoff. Because everybody's going to point to Indiana. Yes,
- 5:38Speaker 3: Indiana was, has been, really never was in college football.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And they got good because they made a great coaching hire.
- 5:46Speaker 3: with Kurt Cignetti, but they also invested. Indiana spends as
- 5:49Speaker 3: much as anybody on their football roster. It's not like
- 5:52Speaker 3: they're the Tampa Bay Rays spending less than three times
- 5:56Speaker 3: less than what the New York Yankees are spending and
- 5:58Speaker 3: still beating them. The Rays beat the Yankees in the
- 6:00Speaker 3: AL East throughout the year to win the division. Now
- 6:03Speaker 3: they're beating them in the playoffs. Hutton, could we even
- 6:06Speaker 3: replicate this in college football? And could a team like
- 6:09Speaker 3: Kentucky with Will Stein, with an inventive offense that can
- 6:13Speaker 3: get things done that way, could they spin to a
- 6:16Speaker 3: lesser degree and still become nationally relevant for college football?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Playoff berths for national championships, all that. I don't know
- 6:23Speaker 3: the answer to it, the way college football is structured
- 6:26Speaker 3: right now.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I don't think right now you can. Not right now.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I think the answer will be in the future, I
- 6:36Speaker 1: think potentially.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Potentially.
- 6:37Speaker 1: As you go to the Power Conference and you start...
- 6:40Speaker 1: If you start paying players to come in at a
- 6:42Speaker 1: low overall roster number, Chad, like a low salary cap number,
- 6:46Speaker 1: if there's a minimum and you're spending the minimum, but
- 6:49Speaker 1: you're recruiting good players into your team that year and
- 6:52Speaker 1: you're facing the top teams, top talent with good coaching
- 6:57Speaker 1: can develop into a winning program. Now, are you going
- 7:00Speaker 1: to lose those players after that?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Probably. But just.
- 7:03Speaker 1: the low payroll versus high payroll. If you're, if there's
- 7:06Speaker 1: a floor and you're meeting the floor, uh, I think
- 7:10Speaker 1: you could on a one, any given year.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:12Speaker 1: But like when a title that's, that's tough, man, in this,
- 7:17Speaker 1: in this college football era, that is tough because you
- 7:20Speaker 1: could be bad and spend like Texas tech spins and
- 7:24Speaker 1: they make it, you know, like, uh, it, it.
- 7:27Speaker 2: It's hard for me to believe.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Again, I'm talking about getting outspent. Let's say those $ 40
- 7:31Speaker 3: million to $ 50 million rosters.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 7:34Speaker 3: LSU and those. I'm talking about someone spending $ 10 million,
- 7:38Speaker 3: $ 15 million on their roster and competing with the LSUs
- 7:42Speaker 3: of the world or the Ohio States of the world
- 7:44Speaker 3: to win a college football playoff just because they're so
- 7:47Speaker 3: good at evaluation and they're so good in coaching that
- 7:50Speaker 3: they can get players that fit their system and win
- 7:52Speaker 3: at the highest level. Jason Kelly in the YouTube chat says,
- 7:55Speaker 3: The Yankees spend the most every year, and they only
- 7:57Speaker 3: have one title in the last 25. It's true they
- 8:00Speaker 3: spend a lot. They don't spend the most. They're actually third.
- 8:02Speaker 3: The Mets spent more, who were terrible this year, and
- 8:05Speaker 3: the Dodgers spend more by $ 22 million than the Yankees
- 8:08Speaker 3: for this season. And the Dodgers are probably about to
- 8:10Speaker 3: win their third straight World Series. So it's smart spending also,
- 8:14Speaker 3: and it's spending in the right places that gets the
- 8:16Speaker 3: job done.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's the style of play, too.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm not even saying it's guaranteeing you winning
- 8:22Speaker 3: titles when you spend a ton. I'm saying, can you
- 8:24Speaker 3: have a Tampa Bay Rays that's so good in their
- 8:27Speaker 3: farm system, so good in their evaluations, so good with fits,
- 8:32Speaker 3: that they can spend $ 89 million compared to the Yankees,
- 8:36Speaker 3: $ 301 million, and not only beat them in a best-of-five
- 8:40Speaker 3: game series, which they're likely to do, but also beat
- 8:44Speaker 3: them throughout the course of 162 games over the regular
- 8:47Speaker 3: season and win a division. I don't know that it's possible.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I'd love for people in the YouTube chat to give
- 8:53Speaker 3: me examples of of where you think this could happen
- 8:55Speaker 3: if you see a coach, a program where that could
- 8:58Speaker 3: make this work. I'm throwing Kentucky out there as a
- 9:01Speaker 3: possibility because they're never going to spend as much as
- 9:04Speaker 3: they do in basketball in terms of within the sport,
- 9:09Speaker 3: outspending other people. They're not going to spend as much
- 9:11Speaker 3: as some of the football powers in the SEC, so
- 9:14Speaker 3: could they possibly do that with a great coach like
- 9:16Speaker 3: Will Stein?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Making the playoff is the key part of it, too. Like,
- 9:21Speaker 1: Vanderbilt would be a decent example because they're spending, but
- 9:24Speaker 1: they're not spending nearly as much as what those other
- 9:26Speaker 1: teams were, but they didn't make the playoff, but they
- 9:28Speaker 1: had a historic year. But Ole Miss, Ole Miss was
- 9:32Speaker 1: spending certainly, you know, like a historic year. Like I,
- 9:35Speaker 1: I don't, I don't know that you can in this era, Chad, like,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and now if you want to go down a notch
- 9:39Speaker 1: and say like the James Madison's of the world, Are
- 9:42Speaker 1: always competing for that spot just based on the way
- 9:45Speaker 1: the structure is to get into the playoff.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Sure.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Like Navy comes to mind for me with just a
- 9:50Speaker 1: style of play. It's just so different that you can
- 9:53Speaker 1: recruit to that style and not have to spend as much.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:57Speaker 1: But to actually be in the conference and compete at
- 10:00Speaker 1: the level that we're talking about with the Kentucky, that's difficult.
- 10:05Speaker 1: It would be Arkansas, Mississippi State era level two. On
- 10:10Speaker 1: a week-to-week basis, I'm not so sure about that.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Well, I know even mentioning the AP poll pisses people off,
- 10:15Speaker 3: but let's go to the AP poll. To show you
- 10:17Speaker 3: examples of where the money is being spent.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Top ten. All right. Stop me, Hutton, when you hear
- 10:23Speaker 3: a program that you think is not spending a ton
- 10:25Speaker 3: of money on the roster. Okay? Let's go right through it. Texas, Georgia,
- 10:29Speaker 3: Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State, Alabama, Indiana, BYU. Let's hold
- 10:35Speaker 3: there for a second because we've got people in the
- 10:37Speaker 3: chat saying, could BYU be that type of program that
- 10:40Speaker 3: could do it? Yes. I'd like to see numbers, though,
- 10:43Speaker 3: on BYU's roster. I bet they're spending a ton. I
- 10:45Speaker 3: don't think they're spending at a Tampa Bay Rays level.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I don't think they're spending $ 10 or $ 15 million on
- 10:50Speaker 3: their roster. It's probably more like $ 20 to $ 30 million
- 10:52Speaker 3: they're even spending, which is not as much as LSU
- 10:55Speaker 3: or Georgia or Texas. But they're still spending a lot
- 10:59Speaker 3: of money at BYU, and they're a top-ten team. Ole
- 11:01Speaker 3: Miss is going to spend. LSU is 10th. Texas Tech
- 11:05Speaker 3: and Cody Campbell and the oil money coming through there.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Utah is interesting. To me also, if you're looking for
- 11:12Speaker 3: that possible Tampa Bay Rays of college football.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And the longevity there we just saw, yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And you go from Kyle Whittingham to an assistant who's
- 11:19Speaker 3: got that thing rolling again. Could that be an identity-type
- 11:22Speaker 3: program where you don't have to spend quite as much
- 11:25Speaker 3: and you could compete for a national title? They don't
- 11:27Speaker 3: compete for national titles, though, at Utah, or really playoff
- 11:30Speaker 3: spots currently in the Big 12. So I don't know. Oregon,
- 11:35Speaker 3: Missouri would be interesting to look at. Tennessee at 15%.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Florida at 16, Mississippi State, don't think so. Oklahoma State,
- 11:43Speaker 3: T-Bone Pickens isn't around anymore, and they're not going to
- 11:47Speaker 3: spend as much as anyone. It's hard to find. UCLA,
- 11:52Speaker 3: maybe being in their market with a good coach in
- 11:55Speaker 3: Bob Chesney, could they spend less and still compete with
- 11:58Speaker 3: some of the big boys?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Hard to see it.
- 12:00Speaker 3: It's tough to find. In Major League Baseball, you have
- 12:02Speaker 3: those stories every year. You have a Tampa Bay Rays.
- 12:05Speaker 3: You have someone. who's in the playoffs, they're in the
- 12:08Speaker 3: final four of their league, they're doing something with less,
- 12:13Speaker 3: with a payroll than other teams. You don't have that
- 12:16Speaker 3: in football. Maybe it's the manpower associated and how many
- 12:20Speaker 3: bodies you have to be, the depth you have to
- 12:22Speaker 3: have to compete at that level to go compete for
- 12:24Speaker 3: a national title. But Hutton, if somebody gives the right
- 12:28Speaker 3: answer or something I haven't even thought about, I'd love
- 12:30Speaker 3: to see it. I just don't think there's an easy
- 12:32Speaker 3: answer to this about how you could replicate that in
- 12:35Speaker 3: college football.
- 12:36Speaker 1: We can talk about this with Coach Derek Dooley in
- 12:38Speaker 1: just a moment.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Can't wait for that. He's about to join us.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Plus, last time he joined us, he heard about Clay
- 12:44Speaker 1: Travis Law. Now he gets to learn about Crockett Coffee,
- 12:47Speaker 1: and I can't wait to get his reaction to this.
- 12:50Speaker 1: That is straight ahead here on Hutton & Withrow. Hutton & Withrow,
- 12:53Speaker 1: we are presented by Hard Rock Bet. I wonder if
- 12:56Speaker 1: Coach Dooley was a big coffee guy, because if he was,
- 12:58Speaker 1: he would go with Crockett Coffee, at least I assume.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Started by Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother Mason.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Named after Davy Crockett. Hunter, storyteller, patriot, backwoods legend. Look
- 13:09Speaker 1: at the logo here. You've got Davy Crockett standing on
- 13:11Speaker 1: the backs of crocodiles. It tells you everything you need
- 13:14Speaker 1: to know here. 100% pure arabica, high-altitude beans, small batch
- 13:17Speaker 1: roasted right here in America, Tennessee, the heart of the country.
- 13:20Speaker 1: It ships fresh roasted, not sitting on a warehouse shelf
- 13:22Speaker 1: for six months. Light, medium, dark, decaf, organic, even a
- 13:26Speaker 1: mushroom blend. Whole bean, ground, K-cups. Chad, it's however you
- 13:29Speaker 1: make it in the morning.
- 13:31Speaker 3: David Crockett on the back of a crocodile. Maybe historically inaccurate,
- 13:34Speaker 3: but we don't care. We're not going to stand in
- 13:36Speaker 3: the way of a good story. You can set up
- 13:38Speaker 3: a subscription. Shows up on your schedule. Changes are canceled
- 13:41Speaker 3: anytime you want, as the free market intended. Free shipping
- 13:44Speaker 3: on orders of $ 59 or more. And there's a discount
- 13:46Speaker 3: for veterans. And Crockett partners with Tunnel to Towers, building
- 13:49Speaker 3: mortgage-free homes for the families of fallen service members and
- 13:52Speaker 3: for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. Good coffee, made
- 13:56Speaker 3: in America, doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com. That's Crockett. C-R-O-C-K-E-T-T, coffee.com.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Coach Dooley joins us here on Hutton and Withrow, presented
- 14:08Speaker 1: by Hard Rock. Coach, Chad's got the Hard Rock coffee
- 14:11Speaker 1: right in front of him. I'm curious, would you as well?
- 14:14Speaker 1: Are you a coffee guy?
- 14:16Speaker 5: You know, every time I get on with you guys,
- 14:18Speaker 5: I find out another thing in common that Clay and
- 14:21Speaker 5: I have. You know, of course, we have the law background.
- 14:24Speaker 5: We both love sports. We both love politics. We both
- 14:27Speaker 5: love a good haircut. nice hairstyle. And now I'm learning
- 14:32Speaker 5: we both love coffee. And so Clay's just done a
- 14:35Speaker 5: better job of monetizing all his loves than I have.
- 14:38Speaker 5: But if I was him, I would open that thing
- 14:40Speaker 5: up in Texas. I mean, nobody owes Davy Crockett more
- 14:44Speaker 5: than the state of Texas.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I believe this is sold at the Alamo. Not kidding.
- 14:49Speaker 2: It should be.
- 14:51Speaker 5: And I look forward to getting my first cup. So
- 14:54Speaker 5: I'm all in for the Crockett coffee.
- 14:56Speaker 3: We're going to make that happen, Coach. Speaking of monetization,
- 15:00Speaker 3: We just talked about this, the monetization of college football
- 15:04Speaker 3: and what we see in Major League Baseball with the
- 15:06Speaker 3: Tampa Bay Rays who can somehow go beat the New
- 15:08Speaker 3: York Yankees, even getting outspent 3X by the Yankees. Is
- 15:13Speaker 3: this even possible in college football where over the course
- 15:17Speaker 3: of an entire season, you could have a team that
- 15:19Speaker 3: spends $ 10 to $ 15 million on their roster compete with
- 15:23Speaker 3: those that spend $ 35 to $ 50 million on their roster?
- 15:25Speaker 3: Is it possible? I don't think it is.
- 15:28Speaker 5: I'd love to see the guy that pulls it off.
- 15:30Speaker 5: And if he does, it's a one-time outlier. But over time,
- 15:34Speaker 5: football just requires so many pieces, so much depth, lines
- 15:39Speaker 5: of scrimmage, quarterbacks, runners, secondary. And that requires a lot
- 15:45Speaker 5: of resources to go buy them. And you look at
- 15:49Speaker 5: these kids nowadays, I mean, are you really going to
- 15:52Speaker 5: go somewhere that's going to pay.
- 15:53Speaker 4: You $ 400, 000.
- 15:54Speaker 5: As opposed to somebody that's going to pay you $ 1. 2
- 15:58Speaker 5: million at that age. I don't see it happening. And,
- 16:01Speaker 5: you know, I think the best example is all you
- 16:03Speaker 5: got to do is look at the group of six
- 16:05Speaker 5: right now. They don't have any money and they can't compete.
- 16:09Speaker 5: And now I think your question is, can you be
- 16:12Speaker 5: a little more streamlined? And I think that's a fair question.
- 16:15Speaker 5: You know, if you look right now, I think of
- 16:18Speaker 5: all the big boys, Georgia probably has the lower number
- 16:22Speaker 5: roster payment of a lot of these other big boys.
- 16:25Speaker 5: So there is a point where you can, you know,
- 16:28Speaker 5: the most money doesn't always win. So we got to
- 16:30Speaker 5: acknowledge that because you've got to pick the right players.
- 16:34Speaker 5: And so the ones that do the best job of
- 16:37Speaker 5: sort of identifying what they want, staying disciplined to the process,
- 16:41Speaker 5: they're going to win over the long haul.
- 16:42Speaker 4: It's no different than in the NFL.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Could you do this with a different style, like with
- 16:47Speaker 1: a system that's a little bit unconventional, something you have
- 16:51Speaker 1: to prepare for on a weekly basis that's outside the box?
- 16:54Speaker 1: Would that be more likely to work than not?
- 16:59Speaker 5: I would certainly, if I was in that situation, try
- 17:02Speaker 5: something different if your hands are tied. But, you know,
- 17:06Speaker 5: Nick used to always say, and he stole the line
- 17:08Speaker 5: from Parcells, there's a reason that they have weight classifications
- 17:13Speaker 5: in boxing. Because the big guy always beats the shit
- 17:16Speaker 5: out of the little guy. And so the better players
- 17:20Speaker 5: always tend to beat the worst players. And so I
- 17:25Speaker 5: wish those guys luck. I would love to give it
- 17:27Speaker 5: a shot. But I'd rather have a nice bankroll for
- 17:32Speaker 5: me to pick the right players.
- 17:34Speaker 1: What is the coach's involvement in the logistics of moving
- 17:37Speaker 1: a football game due to weather?
- 17:38Speaker 2: How crazy is it? What's the communication like? How distracting
- 17:42Speaker 2: is it?
- 17:43Speaker 4: It's zero involvement.
- 17:46Speaker 5: You know, it's the athletic directors, the presidents and the
- 17:49Speaker 5: commissioner are the ones that are being involved here. And
- 17:53Speaker 5: I think the important thing for the coach.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Is not to be distracted.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 5: And I'm sure Kirby's pulling his hair out right now
- 17:59Speaker 5: because it's creating a distraction that they don't need. You
- 18:02Speaker 5: don't need to be sitting there when you're working on
- 18:05Speaker 5: third downs on a Wednesday and the players are wondering
- 18:08Speaker 5: if they're going.
- 18:08Speaker 4: To play or not.
- 18:10Speaker 5: You know, we kind of had this, you know, I
- 18:12Speaker 5: reflect back to 9-11, a much different situation. But I
- 18:16Speaker 5: remember it was on a Tuesday of Auburn week. We
- 18:19Speaker 5: were at LSU. And then all the week, are we playing?
- 18:21Speaker 4: Are we playing?
- 18:23Speaker 5: I'm glad we didn't play because it was a real distraction.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Of course, I don't want to compare this event to 9-11.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Please don't, you know, get me in trouble for that.
- 18:32Speaker 5: But I suspect in the next 24 hours, they'll make
- 18:35Speaker 5: a decision. But it's certainly going to impact the game
- 18:38Speaker 5: one way or the other.
- 18:40Speaker 3: If you are Kirby smart, let's say in this situation,
- 18:45Speaker 3: the solution that you want is to move this game
- 18:48Speaker 3: and make sure it's played on Saturday, right? Just from,
- 18:51Speaker 3: and I know everybody wants everybody to be safe and
- 18:52Speaker 3: all that as a given, but if you're preparing as
- 18:56Speaker 3: a coach, you don't want your schedule to get affected
- 19:00Speaker 3: for the next game and the next week, right? Like
- 19:03Speaker 3: the hope is that you play it Saturday somewhere.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Yes.
- 19:07Speaker 5: I mean, Saturday to me, I mean, if you're a coach,
- 19:10Speaker 5: you want to just go play the damn game. I mean,
- 19:12Speaker 5: you're prepped all week.
- 19:13Speaker 4: You're ready.
- 19:14Speaker 5: It doesn't impact you down the line. And, you know,
- 19:17Speaker 5: we had a situation when I was at SMU back
- 19:20Speaker 5: in 1999, I think it was. And we were at
- 19:25Speaker 5: San Jose State at a night game, and the transformer
- 19:29Speaker 5: literally blew up, okay?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 19:32Speaker 5: And, you know, this is 1999 whack. So we don't
- 19:35Speaker 5: have the resources for all these guys coming in to,
- 19:39Speaker 5: And we looked at each other like, what do we
- 19:41Speaker 5: do now? And it was the last game of the year.
- 19:45Speaker 5: But they had one option was to play it the
- 19:48Speaker 5: next day on Sunday. And for some reason, everybody agreed,
- 19:53Speaker 5: just cancel the game and we never played it. But,
- 19:56Speaker 5: you know, that's another option that nobody's really talked about
- 19:59Speaker 5: is you could maybe go one day after. And if
- 20:02Speaker 5: you remember, they did that in the Sugar Bowl when
- 20:06Speaker 5: the terrorist attack came. That was the solution. tarp the field,
- 20:10Speaker 5: let the thing run through still. But there's a lot
- 20:14Speaker 5: of options. I hope they play the game. I hope
- 20:17Speaker 5: the weather dies down. It just becomes kind of a rain,
- 20:19Speaker 5: wet game so they can move on with the season.
- 20:23Speaker 3: What do you think about the game itself, Coach, when
- 20:26Speaker 3: you look at what Alabama has been able to do
- 20:28Speaker 3: offensively with Keelan Russell and Georgia has just been Georgia
- 20:32Speaker 3: throughout the year? I mean, it sounds crazy to say
- 20:35Speaker 3: that a team that as successful as them has kind
- 20:38Speaker 3: of been boring to this point because of the way
- 20:41Speaker 3: they're beating people, the way we've come to expect those
- 20:44Speaker 3: Georgia teams to beat people.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Well, if you remember about a month ago when I
- 20:48Speaker 5: was on, I told you guys the most underrated player
- 20:51Speaker 5: in college football is Gunnar Stockton, and he's really talented.
- 20:54Speaker 4: He's good.
- 20:55Speaker 5: He's not just a game manager. He's not just– and
- 20:58Speaker 5: I think people are now starting to see that. I've
- 21:00Speaker 5: noticed more in the national media recognizing how good he
- 21:05Speaker 5: is And I will tell you, knowing what you know now,
- 21:09Speaker 5: after five weeks, if you said I can pick two
- 21:12Speaker 5: quarterbacks for my team, these are my first two picks.
- 21:15Speaker 5: I've got to tell you, it's Gunner and Keely. Because
- 21:18Speaker 5: when you look at their numbers, they're insane how they're playing.
- 21:22Speaker 5: And this young kid is just incredible. He's got a
- 21:25Speaker 5: great arsenal of receivers outside. Their defense has been a
- 21:29Speaker 5: disruptive kind of big little type style. They create a
- 21:33Speaker 5: big play, but they've given up some plays. If you
- 21:36Speaker 5: ask me ultimately who I'm going with, of course, you
- 21:39Speaker 5: know the answer already. I'm going to go with the dogs.
- 21:42Speaker 5: But if you ask me why, to me, the number is,
- 21:47Speaker 5: I think it's 15. Gunner has 15 more starts over Keelan.
- 21:54Speaker 5: He's 17-3 as a starter. Keelan's 5-0. This is really
- 21:59Speaker 5: his first super primetime game. And listen, I'm not saying
- 22:05Speaker 5: he can't do it, but history tells me I'm going
- 22:08Speaker 5: with the more experienced quarterback. But Georgia's got to find
- 22:12Speaker 5: a way to affect him and get him to make
- 22:14Speaker 5: some mistakes, throw it to their guys, be a little
- 22:17Speaker 5: bit off. And that's going to be a big challenge
- 22:20Speaker 5: because Alabama has really looked unstoppable.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Stockton is so clutch.
- 22:26Speaker 1: The throw last year at Tennessee comes to mind on
- 22:28Speaker 1: the fourth down.
- 22:30Speaker 2: The big moments, he's ready for the moment.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Over your career, Coach, which player comes to mind as
- 22:35Speaker 1: just the clutch guy?
- 22:37Speaker 2: Pro, college, whatever. Is there one guy that just stands
- 22:40Speaker 2: out to you?
- 22:41Speaker 4: Well, there are so many.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Having coached nine years in the NFL, you see guys
- 22:46Speaker 5: who have that trait. And listen, I think clutch performance
- 22:51Speaker 5: is an underrated component. And clutch isn't just two minutes
- 22:56Speaker 5: to go in the game and win it. There are
- 22:57Speaker 5: these critical third downs in a game or a fourth
- 23:00Speaker 5: down And you just watch sort of how does he
- 23:04Speaker 5: look on that play relative to all his other plays.
- 23:07Speaker 4: And I've always said that about Gunner.
- 23:09Speaker 5: He's always played his best when his best is needed.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Go look at the fourth quarter or the second half
- 23:15Speaker 4: of last year.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Every time they were in tight games, he made throws
- 23:19Speaker 5: that you never saw in the first half. And so
- 23:22Speaker 5: he's got a real innate ability to find a way
- 23:24Speaker 5: to win football games. And I hope he can continue
- 23:27Speaker 5: it because I'm obviously one of his biggest fans.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Hey, speaking of quarterbacks, Josh Heupel made a change of
- 23:33Speaker 3: quarterback in-game this past weekend, and Faison Brandon, the star freshman,
- 23:39Speaker 3: gets pulled out. George McIntyre comes in, and it really
- 23:42Speaker 3: salvages the game against Auburn, where Tennessee was really sputtering offensively.
- 23:47Speaker 3: How difficult are those decisions from a coaching standpoint of
- 23:51Speaker 3: doing something that's right for the team in the moment
- 23:54Speaker 3: while also trying to manage and not lose the kid?
- 23:57Speaker 3: that's your starting quarterback that you still have a lot
- 23:59Speaker 3: of faith in for the future?
- 24:02Speaker 4: They're incredibly difficult.
- 24:03Speaker 5: And you said it's because you don't know if it's
- 24:06Speaker 5: the right decision. That's what makes it so hard. You know,
- 24:10Speaker 5: of course, I went through this. You guys will remember
- 24:12Speaker 5: our first year at Tennessee. We were struggling and we
- 24:15Speaker 5: made a switch and it worked out.
- 24:18Speaker 4: I know this.
- 24:19Speaker 5: I mean, Hypes, a quarterback, he's been around quarterbacks all
- 24:22Speaker 5: the time. The first thing you say is, well, Tennessee
- 24:24Speaker 5: won the game. So he had an instinct that says,
- 24:28Speaker 5: I got to do something to win this football game.
- 24:30Speaker 5: And to his credit, he did it. Now, I will also,
- 24:33Speaker 5: you don't want to get into this day trading quarterback.
- 24:36Speaker 5: So it's always a challenge. But here's what I'll say
- 24:39Speaker 5: about their quarterback.
- 24:40Speaker 4: He's young.
- 24:41Speaker 5: He's a true freshman, man. And I know Hype's going
- 24:44Speaker 5: to do a great job of loving on him, teaching
- 24:47Speaker 5: him that, look, this is a process. He's going to
- 24:50Speaker 5: be a star player. And we got to work our
- 24:52Speaker 5: way through this process. Just look, you know, we've been
- 24:56Speaker 5: talking about Gunner. Gunner had the luxury of sitting on
- 24:59Speaker 5: the bench, you know, behind Carson Beck.
- 25:01Speaker 4: You're learning, you're, you know, you're growing.
- 25:04Speaker 5: You're not going out there because there's that old saying
- 25:07Speaker 5: in coaching, sometimes a year late is better than a
- 25:12Speaker 5: day early when you're talking about when to play a quarterback.
- 25:15Speaker 5: But I know this, this isn't the last time you've
- 25:17Speaker 5: seen him. I know Height believes in him. He gave
- 25:20Speaker 5: up 10 sacks against Texas. He's got to learn not
- 25:23Speaker 5: to do that. He was probably hobbled a little bit.
- 25:25Speaker 5: That was affecting him. And so Haidt just used his
- 25:28Speaker 5: instincts and made the right decision. The hard part now
- 25:31Speaker 5: is how do you manage it? Because if George starts
- 25:35Speaker 5: having success, it gets harder and harder to put the
- 25:38Speaker 5: other guy back in. But my guess is they know
- 25:41Speaker 5: he's our guy for the future. And in this world
- 25:44Speaker 5: of NIL and free agency, he's going to have to
- 25:47Speaker 5: do a great job of convincing them that.
- 25:49Speaker 3: A NFL story out there. NFL refs gone wild this
- 25:53Speaker 3: past weekend with a couple of incidents and guys getting
- 25:56Speaker 3: suspended for multiple games. Hutton was saying, who's a sideline
- 26:00Speaker 3: reporter in the NFL for a while, that it's not
- 26:02Speaker 3: uncommon to see refs go back at a coach or
- 26:06Speaker 3: a player and curse at them the way that we saw.
- 26:10Speaker 3: Did you feel like anything that was done in those games,
- 26:13Speaker 3: the incidents you saw, were different than things you've seen
- 26:16Speaker 3: in the past?
- 26:18Speaker 5: Well, you know, I don't have any lost love with
- 26:20Speaker 5: officials over my years. I mean, I've been a part
- 26:23Speaker 5: of some games. My issue with officials is when they
- 26:26Speaker 5: make it about them. And too many of them do.
- 26:29Speaker 5: I mean, you look now, it's like the best officiated
- 26:32Speaker 5: games to me are when you don't even notice them.
- 26:34Speaker 4: They're out there in their tight shirts now.
- 26:36Speaker 5: They want to have a long delay on call penalties
- 26:39Speaker 5: at critical moments. It's about the kids. But here's what
- 26:43Speaker 5: I'll tell you, Chad, and I believe this. Now, you're
- 26:45Speaker 5: going to think I'm crazy. But the way we can
- 26:49Speaker 5: get a lot of this resolved is we need more
- 26:53Speaker 5: female officials.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Hear me out, okay?
- 26:56Speaker 5: Because everybody's like, what are you out of your mind?
- 26:58Speaker 5: When I was in the NFL, as you said, there
- 27:02Speaker 5: is a lot of jawing back and forth with that
- 27:05Speaker 5: line judge and the coach. It can get ugly. The
- 27:08Speaker 5: testosterone's building on both of them, okay? We had this official, Sarah,
- 27:15Speaker 5: who is still in the NFL and, you know, she's
- 27:20Speaker 5: former athlete, you know, looks great. I don't mean that
- 27:24Speaker 5: in a sexist way at all, but she doesn't hide
- 27:27Speaker 5: the fact that she's a female in a, you know,
- 27:29Speaker 5: kind of a man's world. And I'm watching in the
- 27:33Speaker 5: first half, our coach yelling, screaming at this line judge
- 27:38Speaker 5: when the second half they switch sidelines.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:42Speaker 5: Flag comes out. He goes, hey, Sarah, what'd you see?
- 27:47Speaker 5: And she goes, well, I saw you. Oh, okay, good call.
- 27:50Speaker 5: And I'm just like, holy smut, this is unbelievable. You
- 27:53Speaker 5: talk about taming and quieting things down. She didn't make
- 27:57Speaker 5: it about her. She has this calming effect on a coach.
- 28:01Speaker 5: I actually believe, and it convinced me right there, we
- 28:04Speaker 5: should have more officials that are females working that sideline. Obviously,
- 28:08Speaker 5: they got to be very qualified. They got to be able,
- 28:11Speaker 5: athletic to move around, not get hurt. But it really
- 28:14Speaker 5: struck me. But there is so much, you know, testosterone
- 28:19Speaker 5: and vitriol because it's an emotional game. And so sometimes
- 28:24Speaker 5: the officials reach a point they've probably had enough of
- 28:26Speaker 5: the barking and they bark back. And it just so
- 28:29Speaker 5: happens now in this day of cameras, everything is highlighted. And,
- 28:34Speaker 5: you know, I'm glad the NFL came down, did a
- 28:36Speaker 5: little discipline. But now the officials unions, you know, fighting back.
- 28:41Speaker 5: They think it's unfair.
- 28:43Speaker 1: The thing I pointed out was like it's not unusual
- 28:46Speaker 1: because it's just people don't see it, right? It's like
- 28:49Speaker 1: how the sausage is made. It's how the officials will
- 28:51Speaker 1: talk back to the coaches while watching a play. Like
- 28:54Speaker 1: they're locked in and then they're still jawing with them
- 28:57Speaker 1: with the whistle in. It's not uncommon. It's just we
- 29:01Speaker 1: don't see it on TV.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot.
- 29:03Speaker 4: Of complaining, you know, head coaches do.
- 29:06Speaker 5: And most of the time the guy they're complaining to
- 29:09Speaker 5: has nothing to do with the call or what went on.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:12Speaker 4: Somewhere across the field. But what you're trying to do
- 29:15Speaker 4: is get an answer.
- 29:16Speaker 5: And, you know, a lot of those guys who are
- 29:19Speaker 5: line judges, they know how to manage these coaches.
- 29:22Speaker 4: They can keep it calm.
- 29:23Speaker 5: They don't escalate. And I think that's the important thing
- 29:26Speaker 5: for the official. I think if you talk to any
- 29:28Speaker 5: good officials, they know, you know, these guys jobs are
- 29:32Speaker 5: at stake and there's a lot of emotion and things
- 29:36Speaker 5: get said in the heat of the moment that they
- 29:38Speaker 5: probably look back and wish they did. The coach certainly
- 29:42Speaker 5: shouldn't reach that point, but I think a good official
- 29:46Speaker 5: is able to diffuse it.
- 29:47Speaker 4: He doesn't escalate it.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Coach, I mentioned earlier in the week, I'm bummed that
- 29:51Speaker 1: it doesn't work out at South Carolina right now because
- 29:54Speaker 1: Beavers stayed, players came back.
- 29:56Speaker 2: It's unusual to see that. I liked seeing that.
- 30:01Speaker 1: How difficult is it to keep the ball from just
- 30:05Speaker 1: rolling off course whenever you have some things slide to
- 30:09Speaker 1: get things back on track, not lose a locker room?
- 30:12Speaker 2: A & M' s going through a season right now of struggling.
- 30:15Speaker 1: How do you get it to where it's just at
- 30:17Speaker 1: least going in the right direction?
- 30:19Speaker 4: I'll tell you what, it's hard, man. And it's I'm
- 30:23Speaker 4: watching Shane now.
- 30:24Speaker 5: And it just I reflect back to 2012. You know,
- 30:30Speaker 5: my third year, you're on the hot seat. And we
- 30:35Speaker 5: were playing great football offensively and special teams, terrible on defense.
- 30:40Speaker 5: And every game was exciting. And it was going down
- 30:43Speaker 5: to the wire and we would lose. And then we
- 30:46Speaker 5: would put up this great and then lose. And it
- 30:49Speaker 5: just starts, you know, piling on. He's dead man walking.
- 30:53Speaker 4: He's fired.
- 30:54Speaker 5: And as much as you talk to your team to
- 30:57Speaker 5: try to keep them insulated from all that, what's hard
- 31:01Speaker 5: is you think about you have your players four hours
- 31:04Speaker 5: a day. So there's 20 other hours where they're not
- 31:08Speaker 5: with you and they're getting fed from either social media
- 31:11Speaker 5: or their parents or their friends, really trashing the coach.
- 31:16Speaker 5: And so Shane's got an incredibly difficult job ahead of him.
- 31:20Speaker 5: At some point, you know, what happened to us, it
- 31:23Speaker 5: was really the Vandy game down at the very end
- 31:26Speaker 5: is when you saw, man, we, you know, you lose.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Them and it's a tough thing. So I hurt for him. But,
- 31:32Speaker 4: you know, it's part of coaching, man.
- 31:34Speaker 5: I mean, it's a results business and you got to
- 31:36Speaker 5: do everything you can to get your players to go
- 31:39Speaker 5: play their best. But I think, you know, I really
- 31:41Speaker 5: didn't have as hard a time of getting them to
- 31:43Speaker 5: show up and compete. But it's that extra belief that
- 31:47Speaker 5: you're going to win. That's, you know, and that's what
- 31:49Speaker 5: they're missing. They're out there competing, playing good football, but
- 31:53Speaker 5: it's making that last play, making the last catch. And
- 31:56Speaker 5: that comes from a real belief and synergy with the
- 31:59Speaker 5: team has that it's just hard to get.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Hey, real quick.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Clay had it earlier in the week, too, about teams
- 32:07Speaker 1: being pissed off about the kickoff times with ESPN. Would
- 32:10Speaker 1: you be with some of the primetime games being earlier
- 32:13Speaker 1: in the day?
- 32:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it was kind of weird to me.
- 32:17Speaker 5: I don't really know much about it, you know, but
- 32:21Speaker 5: I would certainly be upset in the SEC if I
- 32:24Speaker 5: started seeing, you know, don't get me started on Notre
- 32:27Speaker 5: Dame and that crowd.
- 32:29Speaker 4: So I'm a homer like Trey with the SEC. I mean,
- 32:32Speaker 4: like Clay with the SEC.
- 32:34Speaker 5: But, you know, those are high-level decisions, you know, and
- 32:40Speaker 5: as a coach, you just got to stay focused and
- 32:43Speaker 5: getting your team ready to play. But, you know, LSU
- 32:45Speaker 5: has had a lot of advantages playing these night games,
- 32:48Speaker 5: and everybody around the league has complained about it. So
- 32:52Speaker 5: I think a lot of people are happy they're going
- 32:53Speaker 5: to be teeing it off early in Baton Rouge.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Well, and it's also, Coach, it's interesting because, and Clay
- 33:00Speaker 3: said it, you know, Tennessee has ticked off. that they
- 33:02Speaker 3: were promised, they thought the Texas game was going to
- 33:04Speaker 3: be at night, and they said, well, don't worry about that.
- 33:07Speaker 3: We're going to do it at 11 a.m. The Alabama
- 33:09Speaker 3: game will definitely be at night. Now that's not at night,
- 33:11Speaker 3: and it's going head-to-head with Georgia and Auburn at 2.30
- 33:14Speaker 3: in the afternoon. But also I'm thinking when they're reached
- 33:17Speaker 3: for comment, there is no comment.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Well, why?
- 33:19Speaker 3: Because they're accepting those checks from ESPN and ABC and
- 33:23Speaker 3: the Disney Corporation, so there's not much you can say
- 33:27Speaker 3: when you take the money and they dictate when you play.
- 33:30Speaker 4: That's exactly right. And, uh, you take the check, they're
- 33:33Speaker 4: in charge. They set the schedule. You agreed to it.
- 33:36Speaker 5: And if you want to change, you got to wait
- 33:38Speaker 5: until the next negotiation round and you can get whatever
- 33:41Speaker 5: you want, uh, or walk away.
- 33:44Speaker 1: A lot of, uh, reasonably drunk fans will be at
- 33:46Speaker 1: this game, uh, because of the lemonade kickoff.
- 33:48Speaker 2: That's for sure.
- 33:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 33:50Speaker 5: The, the, the drunk fan standard. Uh, I still see
- 33:54Speaker 5: it every week on replay. Um, But, you know, who
- 33:58Speaker 5: knows if we'll ever get there. But it goes back
- 34:00Speaker 5: to the officials trying to take over the game and
- 34:02Speaker 5: make it about them.
- 34:04Speaker 4: So, I don't know. I'm looking forward. The season's really
- 34:07Speaker 4: getting fun right now, guys.
- 34:08Speaker 3: Yes, it is.
- 34:09Speaker 4: This is when it gets good.
- 34:10Speaker 5: You start getting a feel for who the good teams
- 34:12Speaker 5: are and who's got a chance to jump in.
- 34:15Speaker 4: So, these games are going to get more and more exciting.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Hey, I wasn't even drunk. I still can't tell if
- 34:20Speaker 3: that Virginia Tech kicker made that kick or not on
- 34:22Speaker 3: Friday night against Pittsburgh. I mean, I've watched that thing
- 34:25Speaker 3: from every angle, Coach. I can't tell.
- 34:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Listen, man, at my age, I end up hurting for
- 34:32Speaker 5: the coaches and the players more than I do celebrating
- 34:35Speaker 5: for the guys that win. Because I know how it
- 34:37Speaker 5: feels on the other side, man. That was a tough
- 34:40Speaker 5: one to swallow.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Hey, we always enjoy these conversations. Let's keep this up.
- 34:44Speaker 1: But we appreciate your visit for sure, man.
- 34:46Speaker 4: Okay, guys. Appreciate what you do.
- 34:48Speaker 1: There's Coach Derek Dooley. Love getting his perspective.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 34:55Speaker 3: And that's one I've never thought about, more female officials
- 35:00Speaker 3: being the answer to some of the shouting and testosterone
- 35:03Speaker 3: back and forth between officials and coaches. Interesting perspective from
- 35:08Speaker 3: Coach right there. I'm sure that we'll probably write about
- 35:11Speaker 3: that at Sporting State and spark some discussion going forward.
- 35:16Speaker 1: We can discuss that and much more straight ahead here
- 35:18Speaker 1: on Hutney Withrow.

- 36:15Speaker 1: Chad, so Awful Announcing had a piece on Caitlin Clark
- 36:18Speaker 1: that they were referring to in her appearance on game day?
- 36:23Speaker 3: Yes. So Charlotte Wilder is the host of a show
- 36:26Speaker 3: called The Sports Gossip Show. I have never seen this show.
- 36:30Speaker 3: I do not watch this show. But Charlotte Wilder appears
- 36:34Speaker 3: to be someone who doesn't like Pat McAfee, okay, and
- 36:38Speaker 3: doesn't like Caitlin Clark fans. And there's been this big
- 36:43Speaker 3: issue with The Athletic writing a story that the Indiana
- 36:47Speaker 3: Fever should trade Sophie Cunningham because she's so controversial, because
- 36:52Speaker 3: she thinks that men should stay out of women's sports, apparently.
- 36:55Speaker 3: And there's a lot of anger towards Kaitlyn Clark for
- 36:58Speaker 3: not being outspoken against people who allegedly attack other members
- 37:04Speaker 3: of the WNBA, right? There's this idea that Every time
- 37:08Speaker 3: someone goes to Indiana, the WNBA, they're threatened by the crowd.
- 37:11Speaker 3: You've got Asia Wilson walking into the crowd to nearly
- 37:14Speaker 3: attack a fan because the fan pointed at her. And
- 37:17Speaker 3: they want Kaitlyn Clark to use her platform to speak
- 37:20Speaker 3: out against any of her fans that are racist, homophobic, transphobic,
- 37:27Speaker 3: whatever they're deemed to be by Charlotte Wilder and listeners
- 37:31Speaker 3: of her show. That's what they want. What they don't
- 37:34Speaker 3: want is for her to appear on College Game Day
- 37:36Speaker 3: next to Pat McAfee, who's taking his shirt off to
- 37:39Speaker 3: start the segment and be a part of that after
- 37:43Speaker 3: Pat McAfee, if you remember, famously referred to Caitlin Clark
- 37:46Speaker 3: as a white bitch at one point and then had
- 37:49Speaker 3: to come back and apologize. to Kaitlin Clark, which he
- 37:52Speaker 3: did personally. And he and Kaitlin Clark have been very
- 37:54Speaker 3: cool ever since. I would say in total, like, it's like...
- 37:58Speaker 3: The context of it is important, too. The context is important.
- 38:01Speaker 3: It was like, you're a badass type thing where he
- 38:04Speaker 3: said that, but everybody's going to take that line and
- 38:08Speaker 3: run with that. But, yeah, Charlotte Wilder is questioning whether
- 38:12Speaker 3: or not Kaitlin Clark should be going on college game
- 38:14Speaker 3: day sitting next to Pat McAfee instead of speaking out
- 38:19Speaker 3: against her fans... that may be deemed to be a
- 38:23Speaker 3: problem for other WNBA players. I think it's ridiculous. Whenever
- 38:28Speaker 3: we get to this referee game, you should be saying this.
- 38:32Speaker 2: The assumption there is being made like anyone who's.
- 38:35Speaker 1: On the side of, like the fan that she's talking
- 38:41Speaker 1: about is automatically assumed to be a Caitlin Clark fan.
- 38:46Speaker 1: Automatically in a category of a Caitlin Clark supporter.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Which is ridiculous.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Like, automatically assumed to be an Indiana Fever fan. Which, again, like,
- 38:59Speaker 1: they're WNBA fans. You know, like, that's the thing, is like,
- 39:05Speaker 1: they're supporting, just because they're an Indiana Fever fan doesn't
- 39:08Speaker 1: make them racist or homophobic or anything along those lines.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Just because they support the Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark,
- 39:16Speaker 1: which is ridiculous.
- 39:18Speaker 3: Well, and we need to We need to have a better–
- 39:22Speaker 3: Karen Krause at Sporting State wrote a great piece about this,
- 39:26Speaker 3: about let's have a conversation about safe spaces and about
- 39:29Speaker 3: feeling threatened or being safe or not. Let's have a
- 39:33Speaker 3: broader conversation about what is it about playing in Indiana
- 39:37Speaker 3: that makes the Las Vegas Aces feel so threatened when
- 39:39Speaker 3: there's been no big incident there? That's happened at a
- 39:43Speaker 3: game like this. They're acting like it's malice in the
- 39:46Speaker 3: palace every time they have to go suit up at
- 39:48Speaker 3: the field house in Indy to play a game. It's
- 39:51Speaker 3: just not. I don't I don't know where that's coming from.
- 39:54Speaker 3: So where it's coming from is it's this. It's being
- 39:58Speaker 3: too much strong line. and on your phone, and in
- 40:01Speaker 3: your mentions. And look, I'm getting lit up in mentions
- 40:04Speaker 3: right now by a small segment of the Titans fan
- 40:07Speaker 3: base that's going to support Cam Ward no matter what.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Would that then cause me? I would sound like an
- 40:12Speaker 3: idiot if I came out and said, boy, Cam Ward
- 40:14Speaker 3: needs to speak out against his fans that are making
- 40:17Speaker 3: me feel bad. That are sending me mean things online.
- 40:20Speaker 3: If someone threatens you online or a family member or
- 40:24Speaker 3: says something that crosses the pale so much, report them
- 40:27Speaker 3: to the authorities. If you don't want to report them
- 40:29Speaker 3: to the social media authorities, report them to the actual authorities.
- 40:33Speaker 3: If you feel seriously threatened, someone's talking about knowing where
- 40:37Speaker 3: you live or knowing how to get to you or whatever,
- 40:41Speaker 3: we need those people reported. It needs to be public.
- 40:45Speaker 3: I think when we live in a world of vague
- 40:47Speaker 3: accusations about, I feel threatened, this person says this, they
- 40:51Speaker 3: don't respect me because of who I choose to love.
- 40:54Speaker 3: They don't respect me because of who I am. They
- 40:56Speaker 3: don't respect me because of the color of my skin.
- 40:58Speaker 3: And because of that, I'm threatened. Well, then show the proof.
- 41:02Speaker 3: And I want those people prosecuted. I don't need Caitlin
- 41:05Speaker 3: Clark to go out of her way to condemn those people.
- 41:08Speaker 3: They should be condemned by being arrested.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:11Speaker 3: You need to go after them. Asia Wilson or whoever else.
- 41:14Speaker 3: I mean this as an advocate for what you're saying. Well,
- 41:17Speaker 3: if these things are truly happening, then go after the
- 41:20Speaker 3: people that are doing it instead of lumping Caitlin Clark
- 41:23Speaker 3: in with every racist in America. and acting like she
- 41:26Speaker 3: owes it to you and to the league and to
- 41:29Speaker 3: humanity to go use her platform to speak out against
- 41:33Speaker 3: her fans that might be making someone feel uncomfortable. I
- 41:36Speaker 3: think that's ridiculous.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Which is what should happen if people are sliding up
- 41:41Speaker 1: in the DMs of Cam Ward's sister and doing things
- 41:44Speaker 1: like that.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Correct.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 41:46Speaker 1: And when I say sides, everyone is on the same
- 41:49Speaker 1: side of that.
- 41:50Speaker 2: That's totally ridiculous. And common sense. That's common sense there.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Going on college game day is, you know, sitting next
- 42:02Speaker 1: to McAfee inside this is also just.
- 42:05Speaker 3: She's also promoting her new shoe is the reason she
- 42:08Speaker 3: was on college game day. I mean, they made a
- 42:10Speaker 3: spot for her where she promoted.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Her new shoe. You know what else she's promoting? The WNBA.
- 42:15Speaker 3: And also, call me an old fuddy-duddy again, like when
- 42:19Speaker 3: I don't like the spots for other mommy. during football.
- 42:24Speaker 3: Isn't this a great example of how we can forgive
- 42:26Speaker 3: and forget and move on and be cool with each other?
- 42:29Speaker 3: I mean, Pat McAfee said something about her that everybody
- 42:33Speaker 3: was upset about that he called her about and apologized.
- 42:37Speaker 3: And now they're good friends. They both live in Indianapolis.
- 42:40Speaker 3: She's gone on the show since then. They're totally cool.
- 42:43Speaker 3: They're having fun together on set, picking college football games.
- 42:47Speaker 3: She's coming in prepared to know the team's and pick
- 42:50Speaker 3: the games. It's fun. Isn't that what we want? I
- 42:54Speaker 3: don't think that what we want for eternity is someone
- 42:58Speaker 3: said one thing that may have offended somebody, and now
- 43:01Speaker 3: these two hate each other for life. And you owe
- 43:04Speaker 3: it to everyone else that doesn't like this person. to
- 43:06Speaker 3: condemn this person forever and condemn your fan base that
- 43:10Speaker 3: may have said something mean to somebody online. Saying something
- 43:13Speaker 3: mean to somebody online and threatening someone, two different things.
- 43:17Speaker 3: For those that are making someone legitimately feel threatened, I'm
- 43:20Speaker 3: saying this to every WNBA player who is claiming this,
- 43:24Speaker 3: show us the proof. Show it to the authorities. I
- 43:26Speaker 3: want to see them condemned by getting legally prosecuted or
- 43:31Speaker 3: something happening to them for threatening you. But until that's
- 43:35Speaker 3: the case, I mean, I just asking Caitlin Clark to
- 43:39Speaker 3: white knight everything for you and expecting her to be
- 43:42Speaker 3: a certain way when she's not, I think is unfair
- 43:45Speaker 3: to her on either side. That would ask her to
- 43:48Speaker 3: advocate for something they want advocated on behalf. I think
- 43:51Speaker 3: it's ridiculous. And the Sophie Cunningham hate is beyond absurd
- 43:55Speaker 3: that people want her traded. She's not controversial at all
- 43:59Speaker 3: because she doesn't want boys playing girls sports. Come on.
- 44:03Speaker 3: I mean, that's not controversial. She seems to be a
- 44:05Speaker 3: good teammate with her own team.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 44:08Speaker 3: And she's a good player. And people like to watch her.
- 44:11Speaker 3: She's a great salesperson. She's a great pitch person.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Come on.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yep.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Totally agree with you, man. Coming up, we have the bundle.
- 44:20Speaker 1: We're going to tell you the parlay to play. We're
- 44:23Speaker 1: going to combine ours together. here on Sports State, here
- 44:26Speaker 1: on Hutton and Withrow, presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 44:28Speaker 4: This year, the party's getting even bigger.
- 44:30Speaker 3: Hey, there's Jay Boyd. They know me.
- 44:32Speaker 4: This party, everybody's somebody. And Hard Rock Bet has something
- 44:37Speaker 4: for everyone.
- 44:38Speaker 6: Plus, new customers bid $ 5 and get up to $ 500
- 44:40Speaker 6: in no-sweat bets.
- 44:42Speaker 4: Hey, big friend!
- 44:44Speaker 1: And you can take advantage of that by going to hardrock.bet.clay. Hardrock.bet.clay.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Bet $ 5. Get up to $ 500 in no-sweat bets. It's fantastic. Hardrock.bet.clay.
- 44:59Speaker 1: It is time for going for the bundle.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Austin getting a defensive touchdown in the third quarter.
- 45:04Speaker 4: Cats, three interceptions from Ahmaud Hawkins. On first down, Smoker
- 45:09Speaker 4: back in his own end zone, going for the bundle.
- 45:11Speaker 6: He's got Bonner, who lays it out and catches the
- 45:14Speaker 6: ball down on the seven, and he's in for the touchdown.
- 45:17Speaker 4: He was not touched.
- 45:18Speaker 1: He was not touched by the defender, Nate Coggins.
- 45:22Speaker 5: Jeff Smoker is a touchdown-throwing inferno.
- 45:25Speaker 3: It's 57-49, Nashville.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Shout-out Mark Howard going for the bundle, the original, the
- 45:32Speaker 1: organic drop in there, and it turns into going for
- 45:35Speaker 1: the bundle with hard rock bet.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Chad, let's get to it.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Give me Georgia money line right here, plus 100.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Spread's only one and a half anyway. It's basically a pick-em.
- 45:47Speaker 1: I'm taking Georgia, especially with everything going on. Give me
- 45:49Speaker 1: the clutch quarterback. I'll ride with Derek Dooley, too, what
- 45:52Speaker 1: he said about Gunner Stockton. I'm taking Georgia over Alabama
- 45:56Speaker 1: straight up.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Well, and even if the weather models work out perfectly
- 45:59Speaker 3: and this game is played on time Saturday night in Tuscaloosa,
- 46:02Speaker 3: it is going to be soggy. It is going to
- 46:04Speaker 3: be wet when that game starts. There's going to be
- 46:06Speaker 3: some wind. And if this is a pound the rock,
- 46:09Speaker 3: load the wagon type of football game, I'm with you, Hunt.
- 46:12Speaker 3: I like Georgia to go on the road and win
- 46:15Speaker 3: in a football game like that. I'm going to go Texas.
- 46:18Speaker 3: Eight and a half sounds like a lot of points
- 46:21Speaker 3: for this rivalry. But when you factor in how bad
- 46:24Speaker 3: John Mateer and Oklahoma have been on offense this year
- 46:26Speaker 3: with Texas' defense, I just don't see a way Oklahoma
- 46:31Speaker 3: scores much more than 10 points in this football game
- 46:34Speaker 3: unless their defense scores or their special team scores. They're
- 46:37Speaker 3: going to have a hard time scoring. Texas' offense has
- 46:40Speaker 3: not been great. They're going to be good enough to
- 46:42Speaker 3: win this game by double digits. Give me the Longhorns.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Hook them to win by more than 8.5 points in
- 46:48Speaker 3: this game.
- 46:49Speaker 1: I've already played this as well. I like the start
- 46:52Speaker 1: to this. Georgia to win. Texas minus 8.5. And right
- 46:57Speaker 1: now that's down to 7.5 at hard rock bet. Tennessee
- 47:00Speaker 1: minus 13.5 on the road against Arkansas is JT's pick.
- 47:04Speaker 2: There's the bundle. Georgia to win. Texas.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Eight and a half, Tennessee, 13 and a half. Roll
- 47:10Speaker 1: with us at hardrock.bet, hardrock.bet slash clay to download the
- 47:16Speaker 1: app today. New customers right now, $ 5 to get up
- 47:20Speaker 1: to $ 500 in no sweat bets. You can do that
- 47:23Speaker 1: and play the bundle with us. Roll with us at hardrock.bet. JT,
- 47:27Speaker 1: you like Tennessee big.
- 47:30Speaker 6: Yeah, I think, you know, I think thanks to that
- 47:33Speaker 6: dominant pass rush, I think the switch at quarterback will help.
- 47:38Speaker 6: Ground game has been phenomenal.
- 47:41Speaker 3: And let's be honest, Arkansas has been awful.
- 47:43Speaker 6: So, I mean, I don't see any reason why Tennessee
- 47:45Speaker 6: can't score two touchdowns.
- 47:50Speaker 3: If I played that game, I'd probably bet the under first.
- 47:53Speaker 3: And I don't even know what the over-under is. And
- 47:54Speaker 3: I would bet Tennessee minus 13 and a half seconds.
- 47:57Speaker 3: If I'm picking someone to cover the spread, it's likely
- 48:00Speaker 3: Tennessee in that game. I don't hate it. Here's what
- 48:02Speaker 3: I love, though. You said that Texas-Oklahoma is down to
- 48:05Speaker 3: 7.5 right now.
- 48:06Speaker 2: It is.
- 48:06Speaker 3: At Hard Rock Bet. I think that we should be allowed,
- 48:10Speaker 3: hear me out here, to play it. If it improves
- 48:13Speaker 3: our percentages, then we play that line at kickoff. In
- 48:18Speaker 3: terms of our overall record for going for the bundle, locks,
- 48:23Speaker 3: everything else, right? So I got it at 8.5. If
- 48:26Speaker 3: that thing improves and let's say they win by 8 points,
- 48:29Speaker 3: I'm a winner. If it's 7.5 come Saturday.
- 48:32Speaker 1: It was that way where when we started the segment
- 48:36Speaker 1: going for the bundle, it was already at 7.5. That's
- 48:40Speaker 1: the good thing here is our viewers right now can
- 48:43Speaker 1: get it that way anyway.
- 48:45Speaker 2: So that absolutely counts for you, Chad. Perfect. And I
- 48:49Speaker 2: was with you. I was going to play it at
- 48:50Speaker 2: 8.5 too. Let's go.
- 48:52Speaker 1: The rivalry, it's not– I mean, I think they have
- 48:54Speaker 1: combined Oklahoma the last two years to score, what, nine points?
- 48:59Speaker 1: They scored like three or six in one of these games.
- 49:02Speaker 1: There's been field goal offense for Oklahoma. Nothing has improved there.
- 49:07Speaker 1: I'm not expecting– I saw what Texas' defense is capable
- 49:11Speaker 1: of against Tennessee. We saw it– We saw what they
- 49:14Speaker 1: were able to do in a comeback win over Ohio State.
- 49:16Speaker 1: I like what I've seen from Texas. I don't like
- 49:19Speaker 1: what I've seen from Oklahoma.
- 49:22Speaker 3: I don't see a route for Oklahoma to suddenly light
- 49:25Speaker 3: up a scoreboard against this Texas defense. I'm with you, Hud.
- 49:30Speaker 3: I think if any defense is going to score, it's

- 49:40Speaker 3: with here. I feel a lot of times there's some
- 49:42Speaker 3: apprehension when I see this going for the bundle parlay
- 49:45Speaker 3: for us, but I really like what we're looking at
- 49:48Speaker 3: with all three of these picks.
- 49:49Speaker 2: I'm rolling with the Braves, Chad, tonight.

- 49:58Speaker 3: the Braves. Let's roll. Let's get it going. Let's Ronald
- 50:02Speaker 3: Acuna get something going offensively. The Braves have not been
- 50:04Speaker 3: great on offense throughout these playoffs, especially Acuna. Let's get
- 50:08Speaker 3: it going tonight.
- 50:09Speaker 2: We will.
