- 0:00Welcome everybody to did that age well at Dude IDK Studios.
- 0:04I'm Molly Smith, your host, and today I am so excited to welcome
- 0:08back my friend Al Jackson. Welcome back to the pod.
- 0:12I'm excited to be here on 2 Levels.
- 0:15And let's talk about, you know, we've been talking before we
- 0:18started the pod. Yeah.
- 0:20About. I am literally in the middle of
- 0:22moving. Yeah.
- 0:23And I was in a pinch to get out of the house that I was in and
- 0:26into my girlfriend's condo. And then one of those pinches
- 0:29where you were just going through what's in the house.
- 0:31Like, could I live without that? Yeah.
- 0:33Do I need my toothbrush? Really need to bring that.
- 0:36Shoes. Are they oppressive?
- 0:38I don't know if I need all of them.
- 0:40Maybe I'll be the no shoes guy. Yeah.
- 0:43So I mean, I was in a pinch and this sounds like such a, a, a, a
- 0:47bug, but it's, it's really personal to me.
- 0:50I was talking to Nick, who runs the studio yesterday.
- 0:52I was doing another podcast and he was like, well, these guys at
- 0:55Spider Moving sponsor my studio. I was like, how do I get out of
- 1:01my house? I was like, hey Nick, are those
- 1:02guys still available? They were Spider Moving came
- 1:06through for me. I cannot, this is not a
- 1:09commercial. This is happening currently as
- 1:11I'm talking. They're at my condo.
- 1:14Shout out to Spider Moving you. You didn't know, but there was a
- 1:1847 year old black man that had one option.
- 1:21Left. You know like you.
- 1:24You know the life is you bumper stickers.
- 1:26Life is full of options. Life is full of option.
- 1:29It was that. Or just walk away from my stuff
- 1:32and they look, Molly, if we're going to keep it 100, I didn't
- 1:36get a chance to get over there and box up the last bit of it.
- 1:38So not only did they pick my stuff up, they got it in
- 1:41division. It'd be like if you worked for
- 1:44Uber Eats and I was like, can you go pick up some Jelly beans
- 1:47at CVS for me? And you were like, sure, it's my
- 1:50job. And I was like 01 thing.
- 1:51They're all separate and then they're scattered around the
- 1:55store. So embarrassing.
- 2:02And I didn't just seeing these two guys moving like picture
- 2:07frames individually and my mom. I was like, I love y'all.
- 2:11I will every time I get a chance.
- 2:14I will shout you all out you guys spider moving if you need
- 2:18real help or if you are a planner and.
- 2:21If you can even plan. To do something like a nut case,
- 2:25do that as well. So shout out spider movie.
- 2:29I had to get that out. That's been like I don't know
- 2:30how they did it, but they came through for me.
- 2:33So that's amazing. In the middle of all this
- 2:34nonsense, though, the one you know, I to go to sleep.
- 2:39This might sound morbid. I I on YouTube, I watch those
- 2:43tornado videos. I don't want to talk about it.
- 2:47Like as white noise or just to be like, I'm so small, the
- 2:50world's so big. It's the guy's voice.
- 2:52He'll just be like Tulsa, OK 1988 and F5 is barreling towards
- 2:58the town of Haysville. They don't know, and so I don't.
- 3:02It's horrible, but I know a lot more about tornadoes than I
- 3:05should. It takes what it takes.
- 3:06Yes and there is a moment in a tornado where it when you're in
- 3:11the true eye of it, it's very peaceful and when I was in the
- 3:15eye of this tornado of moving there was some peace and that
- 3:19piece was watching this movie I'm.
- 3:22So glad that is beautiful. Remember the Titans was the only
- 3:26thing where I was like, it's great to have appointment
- 3:28television where you got to watch it like a movie that makes
- 3:31you happy. So yes, when you have to sit
- 3:35down and do your homework of watching a heartwarming American
- 3:38classic. Yes, based on a true story.
- 3:42That I think, I think based on maybe doing a lot of work there,
- 3:46but I mean, it does seem like, you know, Coach Boone was a real
- 3:49guy. He was a real.
- 3:51Guy coach for five years, you know, after, you know, after the
- 3:54movie was made. So I have thoughts.
- 3:56So what are yours? Let's kick it off all.
- 3:58Right. Well, let's kick it off.
- 3:59You know, I felt like this movie was just so fun to rewatch.
- 4:04I love Remember the Titans because it's the perfect sports
- 4:08formula movie where it's like, oh, uh oh, are they going to
- 4:13win? Are they not going to win?
- 4:15Are they going to solve racism? Are they not?
- 4:19I just felt like it was it was perfectly wrapped up in a bow.
- 4:24And sometimes we need that. Sometimes we need a movie that
- 4:26doesn't leave us with any questions.
- 4:29No lingering thoughts of like, Oh, well, what's going to happen
- 4:32now? I didn't need to really worry
- 4:35about that. I mean, they gave us at the end
- 4:36like the where are they now? Which everybody loves.
- 4:39Shut up. Everybody loves that.
- 4:40You want to know, like, you know what?
- 4:42What happens when they're 40? Oh, he has three kids now.
- 4:44Yeah, I want to know that. I want to know that.
- 4:47But unfortunately I feel like the facade was a little bit
- 4:51broken when I looked into kind of more of the true story.
- 4:55That's why you don't do. That it's.
- 4:57Called Living the lie OK? Why did I start this podcast
- 5:01just to do this kind of shit to myself and my friends?
- 5:05Shattering everything. Yeah, so I went ahead and kind
- 5:08of shattered everything. It's not as though, OK, so
- 5:11Howard Boone, it's not as though he wasn't a black man who led
- 5:16this football team to victory and helped bring this community
- 5:20together along racial lines. But he was unfortunately fired
- 5:25like five years later for abuse of players.
- 5:29It what did, what did I say exactly?
- 5:31It was like he. Oh yeah, there was this actually
- 5:41Obama, when he was campaigning in February of 2008, went to to
- 5:48TC Williams High School and like did a whole yeah, he like did a
- 5:54whole thing with Howard Boone and was like, woo Hoo.
- 5:57So. How long after the Obama visit
- 5:59did things go fall apart? See, that's a good question.
- 6:05The thing is, Boone was fired from his coaching position in
- 6:071979 after allegations of player abuse and related complaints by
- 6:12three assistant coaches. So.
- 6:15I could see that just from the movie.
- 6:16From the movie, it doesn't seem like he was sweet to his
- 6:21players. I did really like when he
- 6:23confronted the white coach and was like, you coddle the black
- 6:28players and not the white ones. I see that.
- 6:32But there were a couple of players who who spoke to the
- 6:36press basically being like, well, I can say that he treated
- 6:40white and black students equally bad.
- 6:44See, that's a quality. There you go.
- 6:46That you get. Sometimes you get what you asked
- 6:48for, I mean. It was the 70s, you know, there
- 6:52were you could call, you could call your football players.
- 6:57So many things I can't say on the mic right now.
- 7:00But I mean, and you know, he did, I just, I, we were watching
- 7:04just to skip ahead a little bit. But there's a moment when
- 7:06they're training in the summertime doing 2A days and he
- 7:10goes, you need water. He goes, water is a bad word
- 7:14around here. Water is weakness.
- 7:16I'm like, we've had a number of players collapse because of that
- 7:21theory. Turns out we need water because
- 7:23our body is 70%. So it's a lot of things that I
- 7:29think the ideology of my way or the highway, I'm very tough on
- 7:35people. I think that works a lot.
- 7:38I think that it's, it's almost like if you were to say, you
- 7:42know, I'm going to, I'm going to tar and gravel this road myself,
- 7:47Could you do it? Probably.
- 7:50But is there probably a better way to do it working with
- 7:52people, learning about it first approach?
- 7:56It's like the the whole tough guy mentality.
- 7:58It's great for bumper stickers and great for movies because
- 8:02it's such a typecast. You know who the hard ass is,
- 8:05But that strategy doesn't work, and that strategy gets you fired
- 8:08in five years. Unfortunately, yes.
- 8:10But it still doesn't necessarily damage your reputation because
- 8:14then 20 years later they're going to make a movie about you.
- 8:16And then eight years after that, the soon to be president of the
- 8:20United States is going to come visit the school where you
- 8:22worked and say you're a hero. Yeah, I mean, there's got to be.
- 8:24So. How many people watch that movie
- 8:27and watch him be applauded and be like, that guy called me a
- 8:30shithead in front of my mom? Like there have to be a lot of
- 8:35people that were like, that guy was really rude to me.
- 8:38But I mean, it's it's kind of like, I think it takes an
- 8:42extreme personality to get a movie made about them.
- 8:45And you know, he was definitely that.
- 8:48I think what initially caught my attention because I I kind of
- 8:52went through this movie chronologically is like there's
- 8:55a coach Yost. He's the initial white coach
- 8:58that is supplanted by the black coach kind of like
- 9:02unceremoniously. They're just like you're he was
- 9:04like the white coach was like, well, I'll just quit.
- 9:06And then he was like, well, I'll stay on his assistant coach
- 9:09show. All the white players don't
- 9:10quit. And I was thinking, if they
- 9:12don't, if he doesn't make the move to become an assistant
- 9:17coach and he leaves and the white players leave and it
- 9:19there's an all black team, that would explain.
- 9:22I remember, like when I played high school basketball, we would
- 9:25go play away games and we would always look at like the team
- 9:29through the years. And then there was just one year
- 9:32where the team was all black immediately in the player's
- 9:40name. It was like Rob Berkowski,
- 9:43Johnny Franklin, Mike Painter, and then the next thing, Jerome
- 9:48Wallace. And it's just like one year.
- 9:52Yeah, it was. And it was.
- 9:53And it like I was like, that would have explained every high
- 9:57school. That explains.
- 9:58Everything. Tori Schulman, her dad, went to
- 10:06Eastside High in Jersey, which is the high school that Lean on
- 10:09Me was made the all black high school, but he was there when it
- 10:12was all white. Oh my God.
- 10:14So it's so interesting. Blue, he was best friends with
- 10:17Bruce Filanch, No way, who came on DBL and was super awesome and
- 10:21remembered her. They were really close.
- 10:23That's. So cool.
- 10:23Isn't that weird? And it's like Bruce Filanch went
- 10:25to Eastside High. Oh my.
- 10:27God. Isn't that life is so life is
- 10:29the overlap. So you know, Coach Yost, he
- 10:32decides to stay on, but they have this little heartwarming
- 10:35moment because they have to introduce his daughter, who
- 10:38plays a major, some would say wildly annoying role in the
- 10:43movie. She was a little much.
- 10:45As you get a little older, she was a little much but.
- 10:48Sometimes kids, like, don't need to do that.
- 10:51It was. She had a lot of lines and they
- 10:54almost seem kind of like wild lines, like they did them after
- 10:58the movie is done. It's like, come on, guys, you
- 11:01can do better. It's like a sheet.
- 11:03What? And there's just a line in that
- 11:06that really I feel like hit hit me and I don't know if you it
- 11:09even resonated with you. They were like, you know,
- 11:11because it's rare to see a dad that gets full custody, right?
- 11:14And it's like he they were like he separated from his wife
- 11:17because he just couldn't put down high school football.
- 11:19And then they just move on. I'm like.
- 11:21They moved on so quickly, they said she's like dad worked too
- 11:24hard and so mom left what she. Never.
- 11:28Seen again, never seen again, never mentioned.
- 11:30They never mentioned. They why, why did they have to?
- 11:35Was that like an element of his real life that they were like,
- 11:37oh, well, I guess he was a single dad, so we shouldn't
- 11:39introduce this new character if, you know, his wife wasn't in the
- 11:43picture. Or were they just like?
- 11:45It's simpler if we just get rid of.
- 11:48I think you you forget this movie is what the 2000.
- 11:52And so even back then, 25 years ago, a lot of things that were
- 11:59not a heteronormative male female relationship had to be
- 12:03explained. Like famously like the girl, The
- 12:06Golden Girls, you know, they were allowed to kind of get away
- 12:09with that because four women in the house with no man because
- 12:12they were older and the sexual element was kind of removed,
- 12:15except for Blanche, of course. But you know, so like you back
- 12:18then, you had to be like, here's a single dad, but here's why.
- 12:22Yep but then the reason why so vague and never mentioned ever
- 12:27get dad worked too hard What that?
- 12:31That sounds like why did you get arrested last night?
- 12:34I was being too nice. I was too.
- 12:35I was too nice to the staff at Hooters and they arrested me for
- 12:40being too nice and then never mentioned again.
- 12:44When they go into a job interview and they're like,
- 12:45what's your worst quality? And you're like, I work too
- 12:48hard. That's what they did with him.
- 12:50With him and his entire relationship with his daughter,
- 12:54who as far as I could see, never attended school.
- 12:58I don't think that she ever had to attend school.
- 13:00I think football is what did they say at the beginning of
- 13:03this movie that they say at every football movie?
- 13:04Football is a way of life In Alexandria, VA, football is a
- 13:08way of life. And so I think that that means
- 13:11school. Not a way of life.
- 13:14And it wasn't, you know, just cutting to the end.
- 13:17I was waiting to see in the montage at the end like that.
- 13:20She went on to be the first assistant coach at the and she
- 13:23just like, no, I went into to hand goods.
- 13:26I started knitting things on Etsy, threw away the 1st 30
- 13:30years of my life. Now I make covers for butter
- 13:33dishes. It was a very, you know, she
- 13:36went to camp with them. Yeah.
- 13:38She went to an away college and did what all day?
- 13:42Who's to say? I thought that they were going
- 13:44to have a scene where they were like she was going to like
- 13:49suggest the play that was going to work or something, but she
- 13:52just really kind of like nagged you could you could be run
- 13:55faster like. What, and using a whole bunch of
- 13:59technical language, like it really was a one note joke that
- 14:02they just had over and over and over.
- 14:04It didn't come full circle with her suggesting a play.
- 14:07It didn't come full circle with her saying like, well, mom would
- 14:10have wanted you to do this or something.
- 14:13She just, it's just for comedic relief I guess, to be like,
- 14:17that's so funny that this annoying as fuck little kid.
- 14:21Is she telling me she was? Grown up.
- 14:23Startlingly annoying. Yeah, it was it.
- 14:26Was shocking how annoying she was, especially compared to the
- 14:31other little girl who couldn't have been more charming and
- 14:34lovely. Right.
- 14:36I'm like, that's how that's how kids should be.
- 14:40Cena, not her. Yeah, just on the floor playing
- 14:43with Barbies. Yeah, there was a scene where.
- 14:46She was like, she's. Accessorizing.
- 14:48Yes, very good call. Good catch.
- 14:50She's accessorizing with the Barbies on the floor.
- 14:52And I even think that going back and playing like, you know, fake
- 14:57director or writer in this movie, she could have taken the
- 15:00Barbies and put them in like a football formation or something
- 15:03to show that this carried over. But she's just like, I don't
- 15:05want to do that. And then she just looked back at
- 15:08the game film, which should have been they should have been
- 15:11looking at on an Atari 1800s. It was in black and white.
- 15:15I mean, it was old school. And she just looks and she goes,
- 15:18man, we suck. And it's.
- 15:20Like what? And then a brick comes through
- 15:22the window. Yeah.
- 15:24I, I, I don't know if you want to talk about the brick
- 15:26situation now. I mean, look, let's just get,
- 15:29well, I don't know, I don't know exactly what you as a whole,
- 15:33like feel about this movie. Like what was your overall
- 15:36impression? And then we can kind of get into
- 15:38more of the specifics. My overall impression was you
- 15:42you really hit it on the head when you started talking about.
- 15:45There were a lot of storylines that had a nice little bow, just
- 15:48like dad worked too hard. I mean, mom, dad worked too
- 15:51hard. Mom left.
- 15:53There's your bow and you're like, but wait.
- 15:54And they're like, shut up. We gave you the bow.
- 15:56And then you move on. And you're like, I have a
- 15:58question. They're like shut your.
- 15:59Mouth, they said, ain't no mouth.
- 16:02You hit it on the head. Just when you start to wonder
- 16:05this isn't adding up, they start saying some more soul music.
- 16:11I did not remember how much singing there was in this movie
- 16:15to the point that it made me want to ask you today, could
- 16:19this be remade as a Broadway musical?
- 16:22I hope it one day is. I think it absolutely could, and
- 16:26I think it should. Well, let me ask you this.
- 16:30OK? Did the saying start to annoy
- 16:31the piss out of you? Because it did.
- 16:33The black defensive lineman, Blue.
- 16:36I think his name was the first two songs.
- 16:40All right, dawg. Sure.
- 16:42Like song, because anything that would happen, it would be just
- 16:45be like we got a big game coming up.
- 16:48We got a big game. I'm like bro, my mom has cancer,
- 16:53yo Mama like hey. It was the go to way to break
- 16:57the tension for anything. They'd be like, man, someone
- 17:01threw a brick through our coach's window.
- 17:03Amazing. I mean, she is not lying.
- 17:10Every scene they threw a brick through your window brick house.
- 17:19So it was so much singing. My girl was like, there's a lot
- 17:23of singing. I am not here.
- 17:25I'm just saying that was what really hit me was the singing,
- 17:29you know, the the process of them coming together as a team.
- 17:37Initially, I just kept being struck by the fact that first of
- 17:42all, this happened in 1971, so 6 years before I was born, You
- 17:46know, like the fact that like the military with M sixteens had
- 17:50to be like this kid can go to algebra.
- 17:53It's it's insane. And it just kind of shows you,
- 17:56and it's always been a not a conspiracy theory of mine, but a
- 17:59theory of mine is like, I think Americans are not deprived
- 18:05totally of our history, but like when things took place and how
- 18:09things overlapped. Like there's that thing that
- 18:12like, like, like Ruby Bridges, who needed to be escorted by the
- 18:17military police into school. She's the exact same age as like
- 18:21my mom's husband. But when you look at the
- 18:24pictures, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, was there
- 18:27screaming at her. But you you look at those
- 18:30pictures and you're like, that must have been like 1714.
- 18:33Yeah, it was not that long ago. I know.
- 18:37And so like, it's hard with these period pieces like this to
- 18:42really grasp like how recent it was because thank God, it does
- 18:47seem crazy. You know, it wouldn't be like,
- 18:50Oh, my kids are starting school so well, you know, we got to put
- 18:52on our Kevlar, you know, like that was like a real
- 18:56conversation not that long ago, almost with almost within my
- 18:59lifetime. But my mom was like a person
- 19:02like kicking it, you know, So it's like it, it that's what
- 19:05what struck me. And I one thing that really hit
- 19:08me before I get into my real synopsis was just like, you
- 19:11know, there is this the big kerfuffle, you know, as the
- 19:16busing starts and some of the signs I saw a sign that said
- 19:22moms against bussing. I was like, damn, y'all, what
- 19:27did black people do? The moms got together.
- 19:31Moms against, what are you down with?
- 19:32I'm down with Mothers Against drunk driving and bussing.
- 19:35And bussing, not not drunk bussing.
- 19:39You can be sober, just don't have any black people in that
- 19:42bus. So yeah, that And then like, you
- 19:45know, they kind of had the show, the team going from a period of
- 19:50not accepting each other at all to then forced to being sit next
- 19:55to each other and realize that we're all people, we're all one
- 19:59and you know, the bond. There.
- 20:03It is and there it is. And just, you know, the, the and
- 20:08then it kind of all being reset again when they come back from
- 20:11Camp Gettysburg from the Gettysburg College, which I know
- 20:15that when movies are made and the college is portrayed, you
- 20:18want to portray them in the best light.
- 20:20So that 12 year old looking goes, I want to go to USUSC when
- 20:24I'm that it looks hot, hot cheerleaders.
- 20:27The one real scene we see of Gettysburg College is when he
- 20:32runs them on a death March in the middle of the night to a
- 20:37cemetery that's filled with fog and talks about dead young men
- 20:42with the blood burgling out of them.
- 20:45I was like, good historical note, not great for Gettysburg
- 20:49College. Do you want to come here?
- 20:51It was very just like I really I, I've, I've felt for
- 20:55Gettysburg College in that sense.
- 20:57And then, yeah. It's funny that we didn't hear
- 20:59from Gettysburg College about that.
- 21:00Like we heard from Duke when that guy in White Lotus was
- 21:04wearing a Duke shirt when he was like contemplating killing
- 21:07himself. But we didn't hear from
- 21:09Gettysburg College when they said, look at this place.
- 21:12All all that we have to show you is this really sad, sad cemetery
- 21:18and talking about the brutality of war.
- 21:21And then they're all like, you know what?
- 21:24I think that maybe we have more in common than we thought.
- 21:29We all don't want to be dead in the middle of a field, OK?
- 21:32We never want to come back here again.
- 21:34So they get back to town and they get right back into the
- 21:39racial strife, which weirdly ends up kind of bonding them
- 21:42together, which is kind of the point of boot camp, which is
- 21:46really what they're that what they went through at the
- 21:49college. The point of boot camp,
- 21:51especially for, you know, people that want to be Navy Seals and
- 21:54Marines, is they want you to hate your Sergeant so much and
- 21:58be so used to so much trauma that when you get in the
- 22:00battlefield, you just react and you don't think about it.
- 22:03And I mean, in that case, Coach Boone was probably a good
- 22:07appetizer for what they were walking into.
- 22:11So, you know, they get into the season and there were some just
- 22:16not to nerd out on football, which I could, but there were
- 22:19just, I get that the halftime scenes are very important to
- 22:24push the story along because there has to be a moment where,
- 22:29you know, there's a player that hasn't bought in and another
- 22:32player pulls them aside and they have, you know, a discussion.
- 22:35And then they go out in second-half and they've not
- 22:37bonded more. But what ended up happening for
- 22:40the football nerd in me is they would have this whole like,
- 22:42Molly, you got to play better. All right.
- 22:44We worked really hard. I love you like a sister.
- 22:47You have to play better. And you're like, all right, Al,
- 22:49I will. And then you go out and you're
- 22:51like, you guys didn't discuss any strategy at all.
- 22:52Strategy. It's just like, well then all of
- 22:55a sudden I decided maybe I will try.
- 22:58Yeah, and then they just go out and because they wasted
- 23:01halftime, falling back in love together.
- 23:04Denzel's like giving play calls as they're.
- 23:06I'm like, you had a whole halftime.
- 23:08He's like, you're going to guard 23.
- 23:10I'm like, you're doing this now? Their bouts went out there and
- 23:14then they're like, Oh yeah, what should I do?
- 23:17They were putting players out there that had never played
- 23:19defense. It was a very if I could go back
- 23:24and look at one thing, I wanted to know where the games as close
- 23:28as they said they were in the movie or they were they
- 23:30blowouts? They were all blowouts.
- 23:32Yeah, I kind of gathered that. They were all blowouts.
- 23:34Of course, that's not interesting to watch if it's a
- 23:37movie. So I understand, you know, they
- 23:38got to do a little Hollywood magic.
- 23:39But I did think it was pretty clear.
- 23:42As a person who doesn't know anything really about football
- 23:45myself, even I could tell like, this was not made by sports
- 23:50people. No, this was this was made by
- 23:53people who are good at writing stories about, you know, high
- 23:59school communities and maybe friends and maybe.
- 24:03Friend drama. Yeah, friend drama.
- 24:05You know, like some sweet stuff tied up in Bows, but there's not
- 24:10a whole lot of sports knowledge in executed in this movie.
- 24:17Well, you can tell that because when they're staying closer to
- 24:21the at least the sports, the true sports script is they would
- 24:25have spent time building up the end of the season opponent.
- 24:29They would be like our last game against Liberty High and they
- 24:33would show like, you know, TC Williams wins, you know, Liberty
- 24:37High wins to build that that drama to that meeting.
- 24:40But like their last game, they just played A-Team and their
- 24:43coaches like just wearing a blue best.
- 24:46And this is I wanted to talk about because we did learn some
- 24:49things about certain teams. There was one team that had a
- 24:52very racist coach and he went on the TV giving an interview and
- 24:58on television he said that he was going to knock the chocolate
- 25:03out of out of the T series players.
- 25:08And as a black man that takes racism very seriously, I will
- 25:12say this. The one Achilles heel to racism
- 25:16is when you make it sound delicious.
- 25:19I was like. What is what did you just say?
- 25:24I was telling my boy one day I was like, you know, everybody
- 25:27has racial slurs. People have racial slurs against
- 25:29black people. But the Italian racial slurs,
- 25:32they sound like really delicious.
- 25:34They're like bunch of caramel fusiles in here.
- 25:37And you're like, what? You call me?
- 25:38A bunch of meatball sandwiches out in here.
- 25:42It's very weird so but. Then that was it.
- 25:45They just they just got killed. There was never, you know, I
- 25:49don't know if that was part of the narrative, but I just, you
- 25:54know, with movies like this, they the camera wants us to
- 25:57focus on them starting to win and them winning over the
- 26:01townspeople. But I had to think that at some
- 26:07point and we haven't really gotten to this, but we'll get
- 26:10back. That's townspeople that were
- 26:12worried about their all white football team being integrated.
- 26:17Takes the field dancing with a white quarterback that is
- 26:25heavily seen to be gay. And that must because I'm sure
- 26:31people were like, calm down, They're just boys playing
- 26:33football. Yeah, but that's a lot for a lot
- 26:35a racist guy in 1971 to take in in the course of a few things.
- 26:40You got to ease the old men into it.
- 26:42Look, they were doing the Electric Slide at like the
- 26:45second game. What are you going to be doing
- 26:50dancing at midfield? Yeah, they are.
- 26:54And they're not just dancing choreographed.
- 26:59Dancing, I mean, it was and, and I do want to talk to you.
- 27:02What were your thoughts on the introduction of the player
- 27:05Sunshine, who got dropped off by his military dad from
- 27:10California? And I'm putting California in
- 27:12quotes because boy did this movie use California with some
- 27:18quotes. Yeah.
- 27:20So what were your thoughts initially?
- 27:21OK, so my thought initial when I first saw this movie when I was
- 27:25a little kid, I was like, oh, it's the gay one, right?
- 27:27I'm like, OK, so that guy is gay.
- 27:30Watching at this time, I was like, oh, actually the whole
- 27:33thing is that like it's supposed to not matter?
- 27:37Like when one second can we post this?
- 27:38This isn't live, is it? Oh no, this isn't.
- 27:40Live OK. Yeah, you're totally fine.
- 27:42Des, what's up? Hey, I'll have to leave.
- 27:43In a minute they're almost done, but I don't.
- 27:46Know if. I'll oh, that's, that's, that's
- 27:51OK. Just tell them.
- 27:51They don't even lock the door. Whenever they're done, they can
- 27:53just take off. And I'm plugging.
- 27:57First of all, I've already plugged Spider and I'm gonna do
- 27:59it again. I'm on the phone.
- 28:01Keep this in. Yeah.
- 28:02We're keeping this in right now. I'm at I'm at the podcast that
- 28:06was Jacob. I'm with Molly and I'm on camera
- 28:08right now. This is no, no, no, it's fine.
- 28:12This is my friend Destiny. She's calling to let me know
- 28:15that the spider moving people have done an outstanding job.
- 28:17This is not a joke and and we appreciate them.
- 28:21And thank you shout out Spider. So, all right, Des, I'll call
- 28:25you back. All right.
- 28:27Thanks. Oh, all right, bye.
- 28:29And you've been here for we've only been recording for 30
- 28:32minutes and they worked so swiftly.
- 28:34It's it's incredible. They saved my life.
- 28:37Yeah, they say. They were my sunshine.
- 28:39They're here at Sunshine. So talk to me, I gotta, I need
- 28:42to know your thoughts about sunshine.
- 28:43Because sunshine so so he comes in with his long hair and he is,
- 28:51they call him fruit cake. He kisses Gary on the mouth
- 28:54which I thought was such a funny troll now like I thought when I
- 28:59first. I think you need to set for our
- 29:01viewers how we kiss Gary, because it was out of nowhere in
- 29:04the locker room and I was like, did we just witness a sexual
- 29:07assault? Yeah, it does actually kind of
- 29:10read that way a little bit when I first, OK, when I watched him
- 29:15when I was younger, I thought that he had like a crush on him
- 29:18and that he literally like was just like, I want to kiss this
- 29:21guy because I think he's hot. What he was actually doing was
- 29:25like, you know, essentially bullying him, putting him in his
- 29:28place the way that these boys do.
- 29:30Wow, That's a great point. That is bullying.
- 29:32You don't look at it from that side.
- 29:33It's like, because it was like, I, I do Tai chi, which does not
- 29:37work. No, I've seen a lot of MMA
- 29:39fights. Yeah.
- 29:40And when people are introduced, they'll be like, here is Molly
- 29:42Smith. She has been trained.
- 29:45She's a black belt in karate, jiu jitsu, and she's a
- 29:48kickboxer. You never see Tai chi.
- 29:50You never see an old man channeling the ocean waves that
- 29:55will get you destroyed. And it's like, oh, you 2 thugs
- 29:58want to take my wife's purse? It's like what is.
- 30:04That, yeah, I don't think that that's exactly what.
- 30:07That is on the field. But yeah, I thought that he was,
- 30:09he was trying to like, ironically, he was like puffing
- 30:13up his own masculinity to be like, all right, I'm proving
- 30:17myself. I'm going to like, I'm going to
- 30:19troll on this guy who's in charge and like show him who's
- 30:24boss, Which, yeah, OK, fucked up power dynamic.
- 30:27But I kind of, I read it really differently this time.
- 30:31And I really liked that they included it because I thought
- 30:34it, unfortunately, I did think it was funny.
- 30:37I know, I know. She was like, what?
- 30:41Because you just don't see that's the way like when you
- 30:44would watch things in the 80s and it me and you were doing a
- 30:47ROM com and you're like, ow what?
- 30:49I'm like, shut up woman and kiss me and that just kiss you.
- 30:52And like that was like, consider romance.
- 30:54Can you imagine grabbing the back of somebody's head?
- 30:56Yeah. Just playing crazy.
- 30:59It is crazy. And the guy shut up.
- 31:03The real life guy, he said. That did not happen.
- 31:08He's like, people ask me about that all the time and no, I did
- 31:10not kiss him in the Walker. First of all, we, we, we started
- 31:15talking about bows. They put a nice little bow on
- 31:18that one because when your team's starting Allstate
- 31:23linebacker has a a stranger walk into that locker room, doff his
- 31:30hat and kiss him like the end of Indiana Jones.
- 31:34Usually you're going to lose some respect with you in the
- 31:37locker room or in prison. Like you can't let that happen.
- 31:41And he was like, all right, man, let's chill out.
- 31:43And I was like, that's that's the bow.
- 31:45And you're like, but I have a question.
- 31:47We bowed it. And it was.
- 31:49Never discussed. It was never what's the the the
- 31:54young demo faison he brought up one more time in the lunch.
- 31:57Room. Yeah, that's where I think
- 31:59that's the point where it's like, we're supposed to not
- 32:04care. It's sort of.
- 32:04And I really liked that. I liked that he never said
- 32:07whether he was gay or not because Donald Faison's
- 32:10character is like, OK, man, so like, are you?
- 32:13And he's like, I don't know, am I?
- 32:17Yeah, it was very. He was like, doesn't he's like,
- 32:20well, it doesn't matter to me. He's like, well, if it doesn't
- 32:22matter, then and then that, that just.
- 32:26Ends and then you're like but what was the conclusion that
- 32:29conversation Bo that's it never mentioned again.
- 32:32So yeah I I thought that that was an interesting element.
- 32:37I had a few things that I had written down because I I was
- 32:40looking for the movie for and whenever movie I look at like
- 32:44what it's the golden age for what like it's the peak of what
- 32:47and I I would say a couple things.
- 32:51This is definitely the peak for the word hind parts.
- 32:55I have maybe heard that phrase once and I went to College in
- 32:59the South. My family's from the South.
- 33:01He used the word hind parts so much that it's.
- 33:06I don't know about you, but I feel like the euphemisms that
- 33:09people use instead of cursing are way.
- 33:11They're way weirder. Weirder and good.
- 33:13Like, yeah, hit him right in his prison pocket.
- 33:15You're like what? Like, Oh my God.
- 33:19Just say yeah, it's like the hind parts.
- 33:21Just really. The PG of this movie really was
- 33:25shining in those moments where they're like, this is a bunch of
- 33:29crap. And that was, yeah, the little
- 33:34girl used up the the crap a couple times, the hind parts.
- 33:37And the other thing I think this was the peak for was men wearing
- 33:43dress shirts and slacks at 9:47 at night.
- 33:48Yeah. Absolutely.
- 33:49All times of the day you are dressed like you are having a
- 33:54casual but serious business lunch.
- 33:56Yeah, it's so weird. They really were.
- 34:00They were dressed to the nines and they really, it's
- 34:03interesting. This piece is almost like a,
- 34:05it's like 1970s nostalgia, but it's also a period piece about
- 34:12racism. So it's kind of interesting how
- 34:14they lean into the like, oh, look at the 1970s.
- 34:17They were so cool. Let's listen to, like, let's
- 34:21listen to all of this, like, classic 70's rock.
- 34:24And like, I don't know, the outfits and everything about the
- 34:29aesthetic is so 70s. And we're supposed to be like,
- 34:31oh, yeah, like, remember the 70s?
- 34:33I love that song. But then it's also like, yeah.
- 34:37And that was only at the time that this came out.
- 34:39It's like, that was only 30 years ago.
- 34:41And this is about the first time that this team has integrated.
- 34:46Yeah, and it was not going. Well, and it was not going well.
- 34:50I, I just, I mean, it's, it's very interesting.
- 34:52I have a weird relationship to movies like around this era, you
- 34:59know, because I had this very strange experience that happened
- 35:01to me in college. I did 2 years at Brown.
- 35:06I did my first two years at a small black school in
- 35:09Mississippi called Tougaloo. And when I was down at Tougaloo,
- 35:12they were filming A Time to Kill in Madison, Ms. My cousin Rayna,
- 35:19what was auditioning to be the court reporter in that movie.
- 35:23So I used to play a a lot to pick up basketball.
- 35:25And she was like, why don't you ride down here with me while I
- 35:27auditioned? So I was like, fine.
- 35:29So I'm playing basketball in the hood in the most rural part of
- 35:34Mississippi. She comes over to the court, she
- 35:36goes, they're auditioning young black dudes to be part of that
- 35:40group of kids that throws the malt health cocktail on the
- 35:44Klansmen. And I got the part shut.
- 35:47I'd never wanted to act. I never thought I just went over
- 35:50there and they were like, act out seeing your friend.
- 35:52I I think it was because I was so raw.
- 35:54Ohh. My God.
- 35:55That I just. I got it.
- 35:57I was for three days. I was on set, Sandra Bullock.
- 36:01I was in craft services. I didn't even know what craft
- 36:03services. I didn't know.
- 36:04I didn't know what a big deal it was.
- 36:06A star is born. I had no idea.
- 36:09That is so. Listen to the disappointing
- 36:11conclusion there. Was Oh no.
- 36:13There was my pre algebra teacher 'cause I was at remedial of
- 36:16math. For sure I get it.
- 36:18She found out that I got the part in the movie and she called
- 36:21me and she said she congratulated me and she was
- 36:23like, if you missed one more day of class, you're going to have
- 36:27to do it again next year. And I was so short sighted.
- 36:29I gave that roll up. So when you watch a A Time to
- 36:33Kill, there's and I knew those guys too.
- 36:36Like we were on set together for hours.
- 36:38The. Black kid that throws the
- 36:40Molotov cocktail on the Klansman and he lights up.
- 36:42That was supposed to be me. A hunt like that story's 1000%.
- 36:47True. And it was so, like, I was so
- 36:49naive. I didn't even realize how big
- 36:52getting a movie was. Yeah.
- 36:55And I wouldn't go in after show business for another eight years
- 37:01probably. So random.
- 37:03So random. Yeah, So anyway, so I have
- 37:06experience with, like, being on a movie set where there's racial
- 37:09strife because everybody's chilling.
- 37:12And then it's like, you know, and action, you whore.
- 37:16It's like, Jesus Christ. Oh my God, it's so weird 'cause
- 37:22it's like these people that were just standing in line with each
- 37:25other getting, you know, really good food, lobster linguine or
- 37:29something and talking about I'm on, I'm up for this other role
- 37:33on, you know, some daytime show. Not as soon as they and it just
- 37:37like, so it's just very this weird dynamic.
- 37:40So it's very hard for me to see those scenes with the moms
- 37:43against bussing and everything. I'd be like, oh, those people
- 37:45were hanging out all week together.
- 37:48But you feel it. I mean, it does.
- 37:50There's a tension there. It's a tension, like whenever
- 37:53you just see somebody in a clan outfit, even when they're
- 37:56acting, it's a visceral response, your body.
- 38:00Has I can't imagine. It was so, and it's in
- 38:03Mississippi. It's hot.
- 38:04It's where that shit went down. You know, there's a lot of
- 38:07elements. It's like we're acting, but it's
- 38:09like if there was domestic violence and then they made you
- 38:11go back to the house and we're acting.
- 38:13It's like. Holy shit.
- 38:14It's very hard to disassociate, so yeah.
- 38:16Whoa. And you went through all that
- 38:18and still didn't get to do the. I just want to.
- 38:21Go back and shake young Al and be like, here's what you do.
- 38:24You go up to your algebra teacher.
- 38:29You're pre algebra. You brush past her, you go
- 38:33straight to the dry erase board, and the first letter you write
- 38:35is F. And then you let me know when
- 38:39you're done writing. And then you go do a movie with
- 38:42Sandra Bullock and Charles Dutton.
- 38:45What? But it just shows you like, I
- 38:48don't think my kids would have made that mistake.
- 38:49I was so naive. I was really a child at college.
- 38:53Like you people at 17 hadn't done anything right.
- 38:57And so like I didn't know like, oh, this would be cool and
- 39:00residuals. I did line right.
- 39:02I would have been sad. I was.
- 39:03Just gonna say you could have been sad.
- 39:04I didn't know what the fuck Sag was.
- 39:06Oh my God. So crazy.
- 39:08But I, you know, I feel like if I pursue that, that's my sliding
- 39:12doors moment and maybe I go after acting and I'd stand up.
- 39:14And so like, yeah, that's how I lied to myself so I can sleep at
- 39:17night. 100% because we can't. We can't go there, right?
- 39:21We can't go there. Well, that's actually not how
- 39:23you sleep on that. How you sleep at night is
- 39:24watching tornado videos, which we've already established.
- 39:27Let me let me give you one more White Plains, Illinois.
- 39:32Oh my God, 1998. It's a calm day.
- 39:36Watson Elementary's just getting out and it's been a beautiful
- 39:39day thus far. A little Do they know?
- 39:41And it's just like, so depressing.
- 39:42I love a little. Do they?
- 39:43Know. Oh man.
- 39:44Little do they know they're about to get their shit wrong.
- 39:48My God. It's I I had a lot of a lot of
- 39:53fun. Are we watching this movie?
- 39:54But there was like there were some things.
- 39:56Let me let me see if there's anything else that.
- 39:58Oh, do you want to talk about the brick through the window?
- 40:00Oh, yeah, let's see. Oh, and the other the this was
- 40:02the golden age using calling somebody a Sissy.
- 40:06Oh my gosh. Yeah, I know.
- 40:08That's a lot. Well, yeah, and you know that a
- 40:13coach who unfortunately, five years later did get fired for
- 40:17alleged abuse of the players, I don't think he's calling them
- 40:21sissies. I don't think so.
- 40:23Either. I don't think so either, but I
- 40:24did. I did.
- 40:25Yelling California a lot of times it's such a.
- 40:32Lot of California. OK, now I wanted to know if you
- 40:36wanted to. Obviously, Gary Bertier very
- 40:42close to my heart. I have a close friend of mine,
- 40:44comedian Forrest Shaw, and we've known each other 25 years and
- 40:51every six months he'll just leave me a voicemail.
- 40:54And all to say is cannot replace Gary Bertier.
- 40:57That's all it is. He just loves that line.
- 41:00He loves that player. We all love Gary Bertier.
- 41:02Yeah, we do. But we need to talk about his
- 41:05accident. We need to talk about the
- 41:07accident. What are your thoughts set the
- 41:09scene for like why Gary ends up soloing it?
- 41:12Has there ever been a situation where the star linebacker leaves
- 41:15the pep rally by himself by. Himself come on, 'cause his
- 41:19girlfriend is still too racist to be with him and his and his
- 41:24bestie needs to hang out with his girl and so I guess that's
- 41:27it. But it is kind of, I mean, there
- 41:30is something to be said for like the person who might be the most
- 41:34popular but is truly the loneliest, you know, the person
- 41:38who's always surrounded by people but never really
- 41:42connecting with people. Which is probably how famous
- 41:44people feel because Justin Bieber can't meet anybody.
- 41:48No, you can't. Just you're on an island chat.
- 41:50You want to go to the mall? Sure, we'll close it for you.
- 41:52Yeah. Oh, you want to go to Disney
- 41:54World? We'll close it for you.
- 41:55They can't meet people. Can't just go to Disney World
- 41:58and be Justin Bieber. Right.
- 42:00They'll be a riot. Like people will die.
- 42:02Yeah, and in Alexandria, VA, football is a way of life.
- 42:06I don't know if you know that. That is what they say in the
- 42:08very beginning of the movie. The little girl in the movie, we
- 42:11find out that it was you really quickly.
- 42:14Side note, but just this made me think of it.
- 42:16I used to host a like a kid show, a Guinness Book of World
- 42:19record show that was on the BBC for years.
- 42:21That's so fun. And I had a Co host.
- 42:24It's really cool. Asian chick.
- 42:25And we did the show for seven years.
- 42:29Yeah, like year 2, we were sitting at the bar just having
- 42:31like a casual conversation talking about how we got in the
- 42:33business. And I was still drinking,
- 42:35obviously at that point. And I was like, oh, what did you
- 42:37do 'cause I remember she, she was like, oh, I have a house in
- 42:40London. I was like.
- 42:41You a house? Wow, you know, like you're like,
- 42:43where did where did our past die?
- 42:45But I was like, maybe, you know, it was like, maybe they call
- 42:48apartments houses over there, you know, And so they're so.
- 42:51Court, yeah, I was like those Brits and I.
- 42:53Was like, oh, what'd you do? And she said her first, she went
- 42:56to like, a performing arts college.
- 42:57And her first audition was when the guy from Blur was creating
- 43:01the gorillas to shut. And she was like, I was the
- 43:06chicken, the gorillas. And like, what?
- 43:08I almost fell off my bar stool. I was just, she just, she was
- 43:14such a cool. She like was the coolest chick
- 43:16I'd ever met. Of course she was.
- 43:17She was in the gorillas. Never mentioned it.
- 43:21She was a professional storyteller and she showed me
- 43:23pictures. She had like one of those Janet
- 43:25Jackson headsets and was telling stories like thousands of tiny,
- 43:29adorable Asian kids. And she also, she taught child
- 43:34martial art fight sequences for movies.
- 43:39I was like, are you a real? Person that's not.
- 43:41Real, she was the best person. So anyway, sorry, side note, but
- 43:44yeah, everybody, some people do have these weird side notes
- 43:46where they're like, oh, I was the kid.
- 43:48And yeah, you're like, what? That's help.
- 43:50Yeah, everybody's something. So.
- 43:52All right, so let's talk about Gary Bertier.
- 43:54And so he's, yeah, the likelihood that this guy, the
- 43:59most popular kid in school because.
- 44:01Because football is a way of life in Alexandria, VA.
- 44:05He is like the celebrity of the town, right?
- 44:08And so he's driving through town, it's kind of like a parade
- 44:12and he's waving at all the people and he's getting all of
- 44:15this love and attention. And then he gets hit by a semi
- 44:18and is paralyzed. In real life that guy actually
- 44:21did get in a car accident and get paralyzed and he did die in
- 44:26another car accident 10 years later, which is fucking wild my.
- 44:30Girl and I rewound that because we were like, my girl goes what?
- 44:33And I was like, what? And she's like, did you read
- 44:34that? I was like, no, I had to.
- 44:36I was like, wait, there was a second.
- 44:38There was a second car accident. So wild it was.
- 44:43Final destination to like what? What is happening?
- 44:46Family curse. I don't know.
- 44:47Maybe I don't know, but it's it is absolutely wild.
- 44:52I so yeah, I read that Gary Burtier actually did get in a
- 44:58car accident. It was after the state
- 45:00championship. You.
- 45:02Know so, but they had to do it for.
- 45:03But they had to do it before so that he could be shouting in the
- 45:07hospital bed. And also, it's not a good end of
- 45:09the story when the last thing that happens is this guy gets
- 45:13paralyzed, you know? They show that and then they go.
- 45:16And then he died 10 years later in a similar accident.
- 45:19You can't end the movie. Like that, Yeah, you got to do
- 45:21it. You got to do it before you got
- 45:23to give everyone a chance to step up, you know, but he sorry,
- 45:28that was maybe a little incentive since he can't step
- 45:32anymore, but. No, I'm not going to say that
- 45:35because I mean, yeah, but I just, maybe I'm picking a NIT
- 45:41here, but I had an issue with the accident itself because it
- 45:47was extremely strange. Because he's being lauded by the
- 45:51townspeople that have formed a Soul Train line of love for him
- 45:57to go down honking. We love you.
- 45:59We love. You and he's going about two
- 46:00miles an hour. About two, yeah.
- 46:02He gets to the last guy and the guy goes Gary Bertier, we love
- 46:05you. And he points at the guy.
- 46:07His signature Gary Bertier points.
- 46:10I don't know if the foot that was on the accelerator was
- 46:14connected to his arm, but Molly, when he pointed to this man,
- 46:21inexplicably, he decided to floor it but continue to look at
- 46:29that guy. So the car just started
- 46:32accelerating in this weird way and the accident happened and it
- 46:38was like, you love Gary, but I was like, Gary, that is your
- 46:41fault, dog. Like you not only were you not
- 46:44looking through the intersection, you, you just
- 46:46speed up for No, it was the weirdest accident and it kind of
- 46:52took me out of it. And what brought me back weirdly
- 46:55is like, you know, when you they got it, the one of the last bows
- 47:00we get the second to last, because the last one I consider
- 47:03to be Emma is and my girlfriend was like, what it's like, you
- 47:08know, they got to make it that it's OK that he's paralyzed and
- 47:11it's OK if you're if you're in a wheelchair, that's it.
- 47:13Your family, who cares? But it's the fact that they they
- 47:17got a tabe on it. So they go, are you upset that
- 47:21you're in a wheelchair? You goes they got Olympics bow
- 47:25and that's it. It's not.
- 47:27But then get some pictures because he went.
- 47:29To the Olympics, because he actually did.
- 47:31Yeah, he had he's he's like an actual Olympian.
- 47:33He won the shot put. Yeah, so show us that.
- 47:37Show us. That, yeah.
- 47:38So I don't know. That would have been a cool
- 47:40picture and I think really inspiring for people that have,
- 47:44you know, suffered injuries where they've lost the ability
- 47:47to because since the year 2000, think about how many people saw
- 47:50that and then went on to have something happen and be like,
- 47:53I'm going to be like Gary Bruchier.
- 47:55Now we see those. We see those athletes a lot.
- 47:57But I don't think in the year 2000, I think people would just
- 48:00like, go get your wheelchair. That's it, bro.
- 48:02And he had the foresight to be like, Nah, dog.
- 48:04Yeah, we doing this? Totally.
- 48:06But then, if they had done that, they wouldn't have had time to
- 48:10sing hey, hey, hey, goodbye at the funerals.
- 48:16I need to know your thoughts. I'm going to sip.
- 48:19I can imagine by that point you were probably a little fatigued
- 48:22by just like the singing. Please don't.
- 48:25Don't not at. The you knew.
- 48:27You knew they were going to. But is that the song?
- 48:34Because yeah, the sports nerd in me always thinks that na na na
- 48:40na is literally the word na na na is kind of.
- 48:44It plays two roles because the home team chants that when the
- 48:48visiting team has no chance to win the game anymore and they
- 48:52start to. So it's kind of like a mocking
- 48:54chant as I've always heard it. I've never heard it in a very.
- 48:58Never heard it as like bye. Yeah, like it's.
- 49:02Like goodbye. Yeah, yeah, yeah, over it.
- 49:05It should have been like, I don't think it was out yet, but
- 49:06maybe, maybe was end of the road out in 2000.
- 49:10Well, not 1971, so. I guess it was 10 years later,
- 49:13so 81. Yeah, so that's not yeah, that's
- 49:16not out, but I just would think that there'd be a better
- 49:19homecoming song than that in terms of like somebody is going
- 49:25to the next they're transitioning into whatever you
- 49:28think the next life is. If you think there is a next
- 49:30life and I that song fit as well as like We Will Rock you it just
- 49:38I didn't see it in. There.
- 49:40It didn't fit to me. Can I ask you really quickly
- 49:43about Emma's handshake right before the game started?
- 49:46You can ask me about Emma's handshake.
- 49:48Because you know, when she breaks up with Gary Burtier, it
- 49:56really kind of initiates when Gary's on the sidewalk after
- 49:59being they were basically thrown out of a bar for being.
- 50:06It is weird that like a gay man and two black guys were shocked
- 50:11that they were thrown out of a bar in Virginia.
- 50:12I was like, you guys probably shouldn't go in there.
- 50:14I OK, I actually do have to say something about this, but let's
- 50:17OK, should we come back to it or should I?
- 50:20Yeah, let me because I'm going to ask you a question.
- 50:22So they're on the sidewalk and Emma, her home girl and two
- 50:27dudes, is an unseen dude in that passenger seat.
- 50:31Pull up like, yeah, we're going to the pointer with a kissing
- 50:34rocket wherever they're going. And I felt like that car
- 50:36represented whiteness and racism.
- 50:42And he had to make the the decision of living a life of
- 50:46privilege in a car or walking the sidewalk with his rainbow
- 50:52coalition of friends. With the Gay Straight Alliance.
- 50:58Really, it was like, it was a real dichotomy of like standing
- 51:02versus them being in the car. And, you know, he makes the
- 51:05decision that he makes. Emma previously snubbed Wood
- 51:10Harris's character Julius, on a handshake.
- 51:12And so she decides to give him that handshake seconds before he
- 51:17takes the field for the championship.
- 51:19Game. Somehow she gets on the field.
- 51:20How? Did she get down there?
- 51:22We don't know. Why did she think that that was
- 51:24the moment? She could.
- 51:28The movie's been leading up to this, and it's just like, it'd
- 51:31be like if I if, like, you were about to do a karate tournament
- 51:36and I walked up to you right before the referee said fight.
- 51:39And I was like, Hey, I think I broke your remote.
- 51:42So, so not the time to just like, I don't care about that.
- 51:46Handshakes. I don't care.
- 51:47I don't give a shit about her. I don't know about her.
- 51:51I don't care that she has had this reckoning and decided that
- 51:55she's not racist anymore. I don't care about her.
- 51:58I don't know her. We don't know her.
- 52:01We don't care. Right, we don't care.
- 52:03No, because every opportunity she had to do something shitty,
- 52:06she took it. She did.
- 52:07She snubbed him. Yeah.
- 52:08Left her boyfriend clearly going to bang the other guy.
- 52:11What are they going to have a threesome with the one girl?
- 52:13No, that is the silent friend. Like yo, I got a girl for you.
- 52:17Herman's tripping. Yeah, you can you can get in
- 52:19there, and that's why that guy was in the front.
- 52:21So even if he was going to go, what was up with that?
- 52:23What are they going to all posse up?
- 52:24Come on, they. Knew that he wasn't going.
- 52:26To go I'm not down with Team Emma in any way.
- 52:28And she said something that was so, so odd to me.
- 52:32She said that. Was it odd than the phrase
- 52:37You're overcooking my grits, which is what Boone said
- 52:41earlier. She's yeah, that was wild.
- 52:44But she said something. God, I wish that I had had
- 52:47written it down, but it was basically like we're, we're just
- 52:50growing in the wrong directions or something like that.
- 52:54And it was like. She said something like, I'm not
- 52:56growing as fast as you are. Yeah.
- 52:59And it was. Just it was like, I don't know
- 53:01that that's really the, that's really the thing to say right
- 53:05now, but I but I do want to go back to that scene where
- 53:08Sunshine and the and the other three guys go into the
- 53:11restaurant and then they're turned away.
- 53:13I actually really liked that part because I felt like
- 53:20Sunshine was the one that was like, no guys, come on, it's
- 53:23going to be fine. It's going to be fine.
- 53:24Racism is over. I'm with you, it'll be fine.
- 53:28And then of course, they come back out because they've been
- 53:32kicked out. And the other three guys are
- 53:35like, look, we told you. Because he's like, I didn't
- 53:37know, I didn't know. And they said you didn't want to
- 53:39know. And I was like, there it is,
- 53:42there it is. He didn't want to believe that
- 53:46he was still getting this privilege over them.
- 53:50He didn't want to believe that racism still existed in this
- 53:54town despite the fact that they're doing really well at
- 53:56football. And I was really.
- 54:00I mean, I do think it's weird that they still, I mean, despite
- 54:03the fact that they were like, yeah, this is not going to work
- 54:06out well. They're like, well, we'll just
- 54:07go in and try anyway. I'm like, I don't think those
- 54:09guys would have done that. Absolutely not.
- 54:11But I liked how they called him out after and it was sort of
- 54:15this moment of like, oh, yeah, we're not at camp anymore.
- 54:19We're not, We're not in our little isolated world anymore.
- 54:22Like, this is real life. And I think maybe I'm guessing
- 54:25probably one of them even said exactly that, you know, because
- 54:28they don't really leave a whole lot of room for interpretation
- 54:31in this movie. They probably did say we're not
- 54:33at camp anymore. Something like.
- 54:35That we're not there. But yeah, I think you're exactly
- 54:38right. And it does.
- 54:39I love situations like that in that there is not these polar
- 54:44opposites where California was trying to embarrass him because
- 54:47embarrass him because he's a bad person.
- 54:49And the black guys in that situation were just these
- 54:52perfect people. It was life.
- 54:55It was a person that, you know, it's it was assumed to be gay.
- 54:58But obviously that besides having long hair, he really
- 55:02didn't stand out that much from anybody else in the town.
- 55:05So he was of a disadvantaged group of people.
- 55:10But hoping and wishing that racism or sexism or homophobia
- 55:16or xenophobia doesn't exist is a good thing.
- 55:19And I think it's very plausible and I'm sure we are all of
- 55:23guilty of it that we try and forget about it because it sucks
- 55:27so bad. And we want to just be like, you
- 55:30know, hey, I just, you know, it'll be fine, even though, you
- 55:34know, it probably won't. There's a party that just like
- 55:37just tonight, can you guys not suck and just let it play?
- 55:40And it's like, no. And so I understand the position
- 55:43of just like, because the mind always wants to kind of relax
- 55:45itself. It doesn't want to think it's
- 55:46under threat. So you do convince yourself
- 55:48racism isn't that bad. I can speak from personal
- 55:52experience with the Me Too movement that hit right when,
- 55:57you know, we were at the height of our talk show and really we
- 56:00saw the beginning, middle and kind of like the teetering out
- 56:03of it in terms of it being at the forefront of public
- 56:06conversation. And when it first came about, I
- 56:09was like, of course there's sexism, you know, we've seen
- 56:12cases of it, but I was like, everybody's had experiences.
- 56:16And then, like every woman that I know, love, knew slightly had
- 56:25these stories that never made the news.
- 56:27And they'd just be like, oh, yeah, my, my manager at, you
- 56:32know, chain restaurant here. Yeah.
- 56:35He used to make us all. We, we, he used to guess what
- 56:39color underwear we were wearing. And it's just like, it was.
- 56:42And you're just like, you're like.
- 56:44Wait, this is. As a person that knew that it
- 56:46was happening, didn't know that it was on this scale, and then
- 56:50it touched everybody in the things that people would say out
- 56:53loud and just like shocked, you know?
- 56:57Because if you don't live it, you're like, I know it's bad,
- 56:59but I didn't know it was like these dudes are cuz if you don't
- 57:02live that, if you don't feel that way, you assume you're not
- 57:05that different from other people.
- 57:06But apparently. Apparently.
- 57:09Yeah, it's it was something else.
- 57:11So yeah, that was a really great underrated scene.
- 57:13Yeah, because he The thing is like, he had good intentions,
- 57:19but he still put his friends in danger.
- 57:20Absolutely. You know, 'cause they could
- 57:22easily block the door and be like, hey, y'all ain't going
- 57:24nowhere, Yeah. Exactly.
- 57:26Exactly. Very much so.
- 57:27So, so, so I liked that they did that even though it was kind of
- 57:31like that wouldn't happen, still illustrated something that I
- 57:35thought was important. So, OK, what do you think about
- 57:41the the whole like he's not getting into the Hall of Fame
- 57:46thing and like the whole Hall of Fame debacle?
- 57:50Like how do you feel like that fit in to the movie?
- 57:54Do you feel like they did it well or do you feel like it was
- 57:57just maybe a little far fetched? I felt like it was.
- 58:01It just, it seemed like it was very flippant because those same
- 58:04people were just like, just give me a second.
- 58:06We're going to get this black out of here.
- 58:08They tried to cheat with the refs.
- 58:10They tried to, you know, tank him every single way.
- 58:13And I think they were trying to hammer home the the idea that if
- 58:18you truly believe in a principle, it may result in you
- 58:21giving up the one thing you care about most.
- 58:24Yeah, and I did not look up. Do you know if he ever he had to
- 58:28have gotten in the Hall of Fame? Yeah, probably.
- 58:30I'm assuming so. But I'm like, even with the
- 58:33whole Hall of Fame, was it worth losing your wife?
- 58:39It all comes back to daddy work too.
- 58:40Hard daddy work too hard. If you lost, your wife became a
- 58:46single parent. With an annoying as fuck little
- 58:50kid. And all.
- 58:51And it all comes down to a bunch of weathered old white guys
- 58:56deciding on whether you're going to get in this Hall of Fame that
- 58:58nobody ever talks about. No one's ever been like, oh, oh,
- 59:01Jacob from dude, IDK where are you this weekend?
- 59:03I was at the West Virginia High School Hall of Fame.
- 59:07No one has ever cared. No one's talking about it, and
- 59:09I'm not. Trying to like, I know it was a
- 59:11big deal to him, but you know, his character was very strange
- 59:19because he was a he was a guy that loved football.
- 59:22I feel like he fairly unfair. I'm not about to say nothing was
- 59:27fair in 1960. So he loses his job due to no
- 59:30fault of his own. He then makes a decision to be
- 59:34an assistant coach under Coach Boone and he's shown as this
- 59:39kind of figure that's that's willing to acquiesce.
- 59:44But at the same time, I don't really get his motivation.
- 59:48I don't know if he was just trying to be a good guy.
- 59:52I didn't really. He just seemed like he spoke in
- 59:54like, platitudes. Well, I'm behind you, coach.
- 59:57It's like, what is behind this person that like is so down with
- 1:00:01helping this black guy? I was like, can you maybe if you
- 1:00:03showed your wife some love, like seriously.
- 1:00:05Like it just seemed like maybe he was just obsessed with
- 1:00:08football, but he was willing to walk away from being a coach
- 1:00:10totally. So I didn't really get his
- 1:00:13motivation for being so malleable about this one thing
- 1:00:17that he loves that cost him the love of his life.
- 1:00:21But maybe he didn't really like her that.
- 1:00:23Much Maybe. Maybe.
- 1:00:25Maybe it was an excuse to get away from her.
- 1:00:27Maybe she he just didn't really like her that much.
- 1:00:29And he's like, oh, I've got to work again.
- 1:00:31Yeah, just to go back to that sad shed, Can you imagine how
- 1:00:35hot it was in Virginia? You know, there was no AC for
- 1:00:38another 10-12 years. Yeah, just like Dad's in his
- 1:00:41shed again. Yeah, there he is.
- 1:00:43Just. Melting.
- 1:00:44I just thought he was Coach Joe's character.
- 1:00:48Just I don't think that you could look at that and not like
- 1:00:53him, but I don't think that you could watch that movie and love
- 1:00:56him because they don't show you enough of him.
- 1:00:58Yeah, because all he is is football.
- 1:01:00Yeah. But then at the same time, yeah,
- 1:01:02he is willing to take an assistant coach position.
- 1:01:05But it's also it's like, what were his other options?
- 1:01:08He could go to whatever, like some other school and some other
- 1:01:10community. Could take the year off, yeah.
- 1:01:12Yeah, but it's like, I don't know, I think that he loved
- 1:01:15football too much to not coach, even if it was as an assistant
- 1:01:19coach. Or at least that's what we're
- 1:01:20meant to believe. Yeah, I I guess so.
- 1:01:22And I do like that he suggested they were at camp 2 very strange
- 1:01:29things happened. They were sitting down to eat
- 1:01:30for the first time. Denzel Washington.
- 1:01:33Coach Boone does maybe the weirdest thing I've ever seen in
- 1:01:35a movie. He puts a singular grape on the
- 1:01:38spoon. Yeah, he does.
- 1:01:39And eats it. That's that's, I'm sorry, serial
- 1:01:43killer behavior. That's not insane.
- 1:01:45It took me out of the movie. Yeah, Yep, same.
- 1:01:49I was like, where was that grape?
- 1:01:50Where did it come from? Why is it on a spoon?
- 1:01:54A spoon and he left it there to deliver a line and basically the
- 1:01:58line was like again, sports nerd, check out if you want to.
- 1:02:01But he goes, hey, we want to make the guys engage, so maybe
- 1:02:05we start talking about some trick plays right at the
- 1:02:08beginning of camp. You guys are just getting in
- 1:02:11shape. You guys are barely glancing at
- 1:02:13the playbook. You're just trying to bond.
- 1:02:15You're trying to just kind of get an idea of what kind of
- 1:02:18offense you guys are going to run.
- 1:02:19The idea of throwing and a trick play would be like, hey, we just
- 1:02:22got our podcast set up. Miley didn't really know.
- 1:02:25She's doing. I don't really know where these
- 1:02:27chords go. We're going to try and do a live
- 1:02:29stream. It's just like you are going way
- 1:02:32too far. You you got to slow it down.
- 1:02:35Way to trick play Trick play The players are yelling racial slurs
- 1:02:40at each. Other you're making them
- 1:02:43interview each other to humanize them.
- 1:02:47Grudgingly. Yeah.
- 1:02:48All right, Molly's mom's. Name is all right.
- 1:02:51Jesus, don't say my mom if you're going to mention with
- 1:02:53that. Yeah, seriously.
- 1:02:54Oh, the the Your Mama jokes. Those were great.
- 1:02:57I'm sorry. I do.
- 1:02:58I do love those. That was pretty funny.
- 1:03:01Do you think that was the highlight of the movie for the
- 1:03:04big guy? What was his name?
- 1:03:05Kyle. Oh, his name is.
- 1:03:07It starts. It starts with.
- 1:03:10An. F it's oh, it's Louie, Louie.
- 1:03:18Where else do we know him from? He's in a few other things he's
- 1:03:21been in. He's been in some TV shows and
- 1:03:24in some movies. And he's also married to
- 1:03:29somebody famous. Juliette Lewis's sister, really.
- 1:03:33And a Scientologist. Oh.
- 1:03:36Just some facts about that guy. But yeah, I felt like that was
- 1:03:41probably the highlight for him. I did.
- 1:03:46I did think that it was nice that nobody made fun of him for
- 1:03:51being fat. That was pretty cool that we
- 1:03:55just had a fat guy who fits some of the tropes.
- 1:03:58But he wasn't the butt of every joke.
- 1:04:00He was the new kid in town and it was kind of he he was sweet
- 1:04:04and naive, not that bright, but wasn't, you know, wasn't the
- 1:04:09butt of every joke. He didn't have to overcome his,
- 1:04:13you know, fatness to become a good player or something like
- 1:04:17that. Like he was just good at
- 1:04:18football. Yeah, and his I think it you hit
- 1:04:21it right on the head. His motivation to play with
- 1:04:23pure. I just want to hit people
- 1:04:25because I'm not good at school ends up having a very heartfelt
- 1:04:29scene over a C minus average. No shade, but it was a beautiful
- 1:04:33thing. He got into college and like,
- 1:04:36yeah, had it seems like he had a great life.
- 1:04:38Yeah, I think he had a good life.
- 1:04:39Shout out, shout out and shout out to Coach Boone saying, you
- 1:04:42bring me your test scores every week and we'll work on.
- 1:04:45It's like, well, by the time I've taken the test, I've
- 1:04:47already gotten the F coach. Right.
- 1:04:49We need to get. You're going to look at them
- 1:04:52with me and tell me I'm a Sissy, but maybe that'll motivate me.
- 1:04:54Here's another F Molly, Maybe we can meet on Mondays.
- 1:04:57Yeah. Oh God.
- 1:05:03OK, one, one final thing that I feel like I wanted to address is
- 1:05:08do you think that they maybe had to lean too much into Coach
- 1:05:15Boone being like the model minority?
- 1:05:18Like the first thing we learn about him is that he's like, I
- 1:05:20don't miss an appointment. And he's like telling the kids
- 1:05:23that they need to like wear their suits and look nice and
- 1:05:27presentable. And he's very, you know, the man
- 1:05:29means business. And I couldn't decide if it was
- 1:05:32like, you know, they're just showing a man who is really type
- 1:05:35A and high strung like the real life person or was was it like
- 1:05:42they needed to make sure that they portrayed this black guy as
- 1:05:46model minority and not as, I don't know, a guy who's late to
- 1:05:50appointments. Right.
- 1:05:51No, definitely. I mean, I think it can be.
- 1:05:54I think it could be both things at once.
- 1:05:56And I really thought that his character, Coach Boone,
- 1:05:59paralleled Morgan Freeman's character.
- 1:06:02We talked about earlier and Lean on Me, where the black men of
- 1:06:06that era were raised. A lot of them were raised by
- 1:06:11parents that were like to be a black man in society because
- 1:06:15there's so many things working against you, you have to be
- 1:06:17perfect. And I think that ended up being
- 1:06:20beneficial because they knew when they were going up for any
- 1:06:24job, any position, that they were already at a disadvantage.
- 1:06:27And so that work for them professionally.
- 1:06:30The problem is, and we saw this as well and Lean on Me is
- 1:06:35socially and interpersonally. It's horrible because people are
- 1:06:40like, Hey, welcome to the welcome to my high school and
- 1:06:43you go to extend your hand. I'm like, look in your hand
- 1:06:46like, why aren't you in third period?
- 1:06:48And you're like, I just came to say hi and welcome.
- 1:06:51Because they don't they can't switch from that mode because
- 1:06:54that mode is the only way that they can get to where they're
- 1:06:56going. So I, I wonder if that probably,
- 1:07:01if you ask people that were raised by men of that
- 1:07:03generation, guys that were in their 30s and 40s, in the early
- 1:07:0880s, late 70s, that we're trying to become professionals in a
- 1:07:11white world that wasn't going to accept them really from another
- 1:07:1410/15/20 years, how that resonated with their families.
- 1:07:19Because I have a lot of friends. They were just like, you know,
- 1:07:22my dad was a great provider and a good guy, but you couldn't
- 1:07:26relax because, you know, if you're sitting on the couch, sit
- 1:07:28up, you know, like, Jesus Christ, it's Saturday morning.
- 1:07:31I know you know, you're like, holy shit, Dad sucks, but it's
- 1:07:35just like Dad has to be in that mode because he's it.
- 1:07:39There's no other mode that doesn't land him on a chain gang
- 1:07:43or in the military. So I think that was a great
- 1:07:46question. I think that's why those
- 1:07:48personality types ended up to being the first black insert
- 1:07:52here. You know, a fighter pilot,
- 1:07:55principal, you know, all these things.
- 1:07:58Head coach, you had to be a hard ass.
- 1:08:00You can't be, I've always said like true equality is when you
- 1:08:05can just be average and be random totally, you know, like.
- 1:08:10When your life just matters because you are alive.
- 1:08:13Yeah, and you can suck. That would be great.
- 1:08:16If like when there's like a Blackhead coach in the NBA and
- 1:08:18he stinks, I'm like that's a quality.
- 1:08:20They hired an under qualified person and he didn't have to be
- 1:08:26Jackie Robinson. It was like I'm going to go up
- 1:08:28to hit a baseball. They say it's the hardest thing
- 1:08:30to do in the world. And 10,000 racial slurs and
- 1:08:33death threats. They said Hank Aaron, who broke
- 1:08:36the Babe Ruth's home run record. The FBI said he got the most
- 1:08:39recorded death threats of anybody that's ever lived.
- 1:08:42Think about that and you're trying to hit a baseball.
- 1:08:44And yeah, you're trying to focus on any.
- 1:08:46And so it's just like you have to be that level of human being.
- 1:08:50And I just want to see a world where a lot of average ass black
- 1:08:54people get fired for showing up late four days in a row.
- 1:08:59That's real equality. When you can just be a person,
- 1:09:02you can be the best or the worst or somewhere in the middle.
- 1:09:05And we we can all just kind of figure out path in his life.
- 1:09:08That's why I don't care that much that Howard Boone and ended
- 1:09:13up getting fired five years later.
- 1:09:15You know, it's like it does kind of sour the movie for me a
- 1:09:18little. You know, it kind of makes the,
- 1:09:20you know, all the sissies and all that kind of it paints it in
- 1:09:25a different light. But honestly, it doesn't make me
- 1:09:28say like, we need to cancel Howard Boone.
- 1:09:31You know, like I'm not like, you know, it's, it's, it's like he
- 1:09:35was probably doing the same shit that every other football coach
- 1:09:40in the 1970s was doing. And football coaches even now,
- 1:09:45you know, it's like, yeah, they're all, they're all talking
- 1:09:49shit to their teenage players. Even when I played high school
- 1:09:53basketball in the 90s, my coach and it's funny because people
- 1:09:58don't find this as funny as me. He was just like a jerk and he
- 1:10:02would just yell things at practice that would like just
- 1:10:04get you. I remember one time we were
- 1:10:06running wind sprints and he stopped the team for running and
- 1:10:10he goes, hold on, hold on, Jackson, are you out here just
- 1:10:14to show us that all black men aren't fast?
- 1:10:26So that's funny and like, Oh my God, like you could not say
- 1:10:32that, but it was that was a, that was a, that was a zinger
- 1:10:35that, that that's they would meet 20-30.
- 1:10:38I mean, that was so funny. And it's like, you can't say
- 1:10:42that anymore, but I was like, damn.
- 1:10:44But like those men existed and not they don't anymore.
- 1:10:47Those guys have all been fired from whatever position.
- 1:10:50But I, I think you're right. I think that that's personality
- 1:10:53type that has a short shelf life, but it's it's like, it's
- 1:10:59like having like a flamethrower. If you need to to get rid of a
- 1:11:02forest to get somewhere, OK, it's great.
- 1:11:06But like the small things it doesn't work on well.
- 1:11:08And that's kind of like that personality is only good for
- 1:11:12space and time, and then it's five years got to go.
- 1:11:14It works for when your community is at a total crossroads and you
- 1:11:20need to bring this team together and you need to like make sure
- 1:11:24that everyone is really falling in line so that you can
- 1:11:28accomplish this goal. But then it's like, OK, so then
- 1:11:31they they integrated the team. Every, every game was a blowout.
- 1:11:35They're doing great. And it's like, maybe once the
- 1:11:38dust settles, then they're like, well, you got to stop calling US
- 1:11:42Californians now. Now you can't keep doing that.
- 1:11:47It's not really it's there's not really as much of A purpose for.
- 1:11:51It and I don't know if there's a switch for that.
- 1:11:53I don't think there's. A.
- 1:11:54Cool ass coach. Boom.
- 1:11:55It's like, take your shoes off, put them on my coffee table.
- 1:11:57It's fine. I don't know if he ever chills
- 1:12:00out. And I think that a lot of guys
- 1:12:02from that era, if you talk to the kids that they raised, were
- 1:12:06like, my dad was a great man and a good man and a man of his
- 1:12:10convictions. But I wish I could have seen him
- 1:12:14laugh more, you know? And they never got a chance to
- 1:12:17because their life was warfare everywhere.
- 1:12:20You went to the store and just like, yeah, we don't have any
- 1:12:23soda. It's.
- 1:12:24I can see it over your shoulder. We're out.
- 1:12:26Imagine that's every day. Every day.
- 1:12:27You know, like, it's very hard to take your armor off and just
- 1:12:30be like, hey, let's kick it today.
- 1:12:32You know, So I get where that personality type comes from.
- 1:12:36And I get where that personality type makes you say I want to get
- 1:12:3950 miles away from this person right now.
- 1:12:41Yeah. 100%, yeah. Well, listen, what else do we
- 1:12:45need to talk about? Is there anything else that we
- 1:12:46didn't address? I think that is it.
- 1:12:49Is there one more thing? Because if I leave anything on
- 1:12:51here, I'll be like we have no water.
- 1:12:56We talked about that hind parts. Oh.
- 1:12:58I must say that that the screenwriter Gregory Allen
- 1:13:03Howard is the first African American screenwriter in
- 1:13:07Hollywood history to write a script for $100 million
- 1:13:13generating motion picture drama, and the only African American
- 1:13:17screenwriter in film history to write a spec script that
- 1:13:20garnered $100 million in revenue.
- 1:13:23Wow, yeah, 100 million. I mean, this movie really hit
- 1:13:27and I mean it, it it I feel like for when it was made, it held up
- 1:13:33incredibly well. And I know people you can pick
- 1:13:36it apart now. It's like it was 2000.
- 1:13:38Go back and watch reality TV. You have to add a show where he
- 1:13:41was kissing 19 year olds in the mouth.
- 1:13:42That's true On syndicated television.
- 1:13:44Everybody was like, cool. So like we were not all the way
- 1:13:48there yet. So shout out.
- 1:13:50I think we have hit everything. I have the uniforms I'll
- 1:13:54fitting. Yes, that's very true.
- 1:13:57And let's say there was one more thing that I had.
- 1:14:01OK, No, I think I think that's it.
- 1:14:04We talked about everything. Wow.
- 1:14:07OK, actually I will say one more thing that actually really
- 1:14:10brought a smile to my face is that so at the time it got like
- 1:14:15mixed but generally positive ish reviews.
- 1:14:20But then over time it's become like more and more appreciated.
- 1:14:25But when it came out, Roger Ebert in his review basically
- 1:14:29was like, it's not radical enough.
- 1:14:31It's like, let's see what he said, he said.
- 1:14:35Still, the story sweeps certain obvious questions under the rug.
- 1:14:39One, we see that the whites don't want to play with the
- 1:14:42blacks and are afraid of losing their starting positions.
- 1:14:44But what about the black students?
- 1:14:46Weren't they in a black high school last year?
- 1:14:48Aren't they losing their team, too?
- 1:14:50Aren't some of them going to be replaced by white starters?
- 1:14:52The movie shows the whites. The movie shows the whites as
- 1:14:58resentful and possessive, but assumes that the black players
- 1:15:01are grateful for the chance to leave their old school and
- 1:15:03integrate into the other team. And then it says whether the
- 1:15:07Titans win or lose has nothing to do with the season they have
- 1:15:10played and what they were trying to do.
- 1:15:12But it has everything to do with the movie sleight of hand, which
- 1:15:15is we cheer the closing touchdown as if it's a victory
- 1:15:18over racism. He was basically like, they
- 1:15:21didn't solve racism, but they made it look like it's that easy
- 1:15:25to score a touchdown and race and racism is gone.
- 1:15:29And I thought that was like, I was like, wow, that's that's
- 1:15:33kind of delightful that in the year 2000 that Roger Ebert was
- 1:15:36like, no. It's yeah, he, I mean, he's
- 1:15:41totally right. And it kind of goes back to what
- 1:15:43I was saying earlier where there is a part of all of us, I think,
- 1:15:49inside where we just want to feel like at least for a moment,
- 1:15:52because we all have the struggles of the world that
- 1:15:54like, for one night, it was all right.
- 1:15:57And it probably wasn't. There were probably half the
- 1:16:00people in those stands. Like, I ain't cheering for that
- 1:16:02team, but they didn't put the camera on them.
- 1:16:05And in a weird way, it's OK because they're always going to
- 1:16:08be people that suck. And every once in a while, even
- 1:16:13if it's not true, you just want to thank the good guys. 1 And
- 1:16:16that's where Based on a True Story comes in.
- 1:16:18They're like close enough. Don't look it up if you don't
- 1:16:21want to know. If you don't want to know, don't
- 1:16:23look it up. It's close enough.
- 1:16:24Everything's tied up in a boat. Stop asking questions.
- 1:16:27Just enjoy it. Yeah, just sit down and enjoy a
- 1:16:29movie. That's what I think.
- 1:16:30Was California gay? There's your bow.
- 1:16:32Here's your bow. Yeah, who cares?
- 1:16:33Yeah. Was it was this a real story?
- 1:16:35We already put the bow on it and it kind of makes you feel, yeah,
- 1:16:37it's over. Yeah, no more questions.
- 1:16:39Yeah, exactly. So, well, I am so glad that we
- 1:16:42did this. Tell the people what you've got
- 1:16:43going on, What's going on in your world?
