- 0:06Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:09Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Bar and Lazarre.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Hello, everybody nailed it. Joined us always by our Here
- 0:20Speaker 1: is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars.
- 0:23Speaker 3: I think the the other element with Josh Allen, just
- 0:25Speaker 3: from my standpoint, is that he's probably the hardest quarterback
- 0:29Speaker 3: to defend in the in the league, because he's just
- 0:33Speaker 3: so otherworldly talented physically, Like there's really not a weakness
- 0:38Speaker 3: to his game from a physical talent standpoint, because of
- 0:42Speaker 3: how good he is with his arm man with his legs.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I think Lamar is harder to defend.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I don't Lamar to me, and I love Lamar, you know,
- 0:49Speaker 3: but Lamar is a between the numbers thrower. If you
- 0:51Speaker 3: can funnel the ball outside the numbers and make him
- 0:53Speaker 3: push the ball outside the numbers, Lamar is not the same. Well,
- 1:01Speaker 3: I guess we'll find out.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I guess we want.
- 1:03Speaker 3: We got the back to back here at the two
- 1:06Speaker 3: most recent NFL MVPs, right, I think I think that's right.
- 1:10Speaker 3: And some people think Lamar should have been the MVP
- 1:13Speaker 3: last year. Should have so maybe some people sitting to
- 1:16Speaker 3: my right. So yeah, there's a it'll be interesting to
- 1:20Speaker 3: see how it looks against these two guys. Now, Lamar
- 1:23Speaker 3: is not fully healthy, so I think that that is
- 1:28Speaker 3: an important caveat to put on it. But we'll get
- 1:31Speaker 3: to Lamar and we'll get to the Baltimore Ravens. Sorry,
- 1:33Speaker 3: we're a few minutes late. I know none of you care,
- 1:37Speaker 3: but there was some bad traffic, maybe an accident or
- 1:40Speaker 3: something on our both of our commutes this morning, so
- 1:43Speaker 3: i'lex meet me by a few minutes, so he would
- 1:45Speaker 3: have been on time. It was it was me that
- 1:47Speaker 3: was three minutes late, So I apologize. But we're here.
- 1:51Speaker 3: We're up and running. All things considered, it wasn't as
- 1:54Speaker 3: late as we could have probably been given the traffic
- 1:57Speaker 3: in the situation, so we'll take it. Anyway. Let's talk
- 2:01Speaker 3: a little bit about this Bills game. We'll certainly get
- 2:04Speaker 3: to the Ravens here, probably in the second hour of
- 2:07Speaker 3: the show. We'll take your calls and emails. With the
- 2:09Speaker 3: phone lines already lighting up this morning and the emails.
- 2:13Speaker 3: And it does seem like a loss like this one
- 2:17Speaker 3: elicit's a lot more response than a ten game winning streak.
- 2:20Speaker 3: For some reason, that might just be the market we
- 2:23Speaker 3: are in but I want to start here with the
- 2:25Speaker 3: Bills in this game on Sunday, because we texted back
- 2:30Speaker 3: and forth about this Sunday morning, Sunday night into Monday morning.
- 2:33Speaker 3: It felt like about where we were in our steps
- 2:38Speaker 3: of processing this loss. And I think that where I've
- 2:43Speaker 3: settled now as I kind of put a bow on
- 2:46Speaker 3: this for the week and turn the page here to
- 2:49Speaker 3: Baltimore is there's like a macro and microway to look
- 2:53Speaker 3: at this game. And I think after the game, I
- 2:57Speaker 3: was trying to kind of live in the macro for
- 3:00Speaker 3: a second and realize that if you had told me
- 3:03Speaker 3: coming into the season they were going to play two
- 3:05Speaker 3: games against Buffalo, they were gonna split those two games,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and they were going to be super competitive in both games.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I would say that's great. You know that that's a
- 3:16Speaker 3: good step forward. I think that there's no doubt about it,
- 3:19Speaker 3: and I think the people of Bill's mafia are sort
- 3:22Speaker 3: of feeling this as well. There's no doubt about it.
- 3:25Speaker 3: The Patriots have closed the gap with the Bills, like
- 3:27Speaker 3: they can now go on the same field, stand toe
- 3:30Speaker 3: to toe with Buffalo and play them close and maybe
- 3:34Speaker 3: even beat them. And maybe they should have even beaten
- 3:36Speaker 3: them on Sunday, right, and been two and zero against
- 3:39Speaker 3: the Bills. So I think if you came into the
- 3:42Speaker 3: season with that and you were told that, you would
- 3:47Speaker 3: be really really optimistic and happy about where they at.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I think it's really good thing that this show is
- 3:54Speaker 3: perfect for this type of loss that we're going to
- 3:57Speaker 3: talk about all this different minutia that can tributed to
- 4:00Speaker 3: the loss, instead of just saying we just don't got
- 4:03Speaker 3: the personnel, we don't got the horses to hang with them, right,
- 4:06Speaker 3: you know, it's a Jimmy's and Joe's not nixes and nose.
- 4:09Speaker 3: This is about the margins. Like, this game was decided
- 4:13Speaker 3: by a bunch of little things that we'll certainly get to,
- 4:17Speaker 3: even to the point where you know, I was getting
- 4:20Speaker 3: mocked yesterday about bringing up the kickoff coverage, which was
- 4:23Speaker 3: a huge part of this game massive, Right, So like,
- 4:26Speaker 3: these are things that we're going to talk about today
- 4:28Speaker 3: that aren't just yeah, they're a lot better than they
- 4:33Speaker 3: than we are.
- 4:33Speaker 4: No.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I think that's that's the way you got to look
- 4:36Speaker 3: at it.
- 4:36Speaker 2: From the one thing I'll put back push back on
- 4:39Speaker 2: a little bit with that, and I agree with a
- 4:41Speaker 2: good chunk of what you said. There are some personnel things,
- 4:45Speaker 2: but it's about injuries. It's not about not having the players.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Injuries are the kind of things that didn't happen over
- 4:51Speaker 2: the course of year. We had talked a lot at
- 4:53Speaker 2: the beginning of the season about how depth was going
- 4:55Speaker 2: to be one of the biggest issues for this team. Yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 2: credit to the Patriots training staff. It really didn't come
- 4:59Speaker 2: up until. I mean, this has been a very healthy
- 5:01Speaker 2: team all year. But yeah, in the areas that we
- 5:05Speaker 2: are going to talk about, because I just I don't
- 5:07Speaker 2: want you to give that qualifier and then I come
- 5:08Speaker 2: back and say it later and it sounds contradictive. Yeah,
- 5:11Speaker 2: of the few areas we will talk about, well, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 2: better personnel here, better personnel there. I do think they
- 5:18Speaker 2: have the guys, they just weren't on the field, and
- 5:19Speaker 2: that that's the National Football League. Like guys get hurt.
- 5:22Speaker 2: That happens. And I know the Bills had guys hurt too,
- 5:25Speaker 2: and the Patriots not taking advantage of that was also
- 5:27Speaker 2: part of the problem in this game. But you know,
- 5:30Speaker 2: when you look at Okay, where were the Bills really
- 5:33Speaker 2: bettered in the Patriots some of that and you know,
- 5:36Speaker 2: credit to the Bills. They attacked areas where the Patriots
- 5:39Speaker 2: were banged up, and that's what a smart football team does.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, so I think that's all fair. I think then
- 5:45Speaker 3: there's you know, this is more maybe part of the
- 5:47Speaker 3: second thing I was going to say, but you just said,
- 5:50Speaker 3: then there's the micro view of it. Yeah, analyzing this
- 5:54Speaker 3: specific game in a vacuum and then analyzing the twenty
- 5:57Speaker 3: twenty five New England Patriots. Not the program Mike Rabel's
- 6:01Speaker 3: trying to build in the career that Drake May is
- 6:03Speaker 3: trying to have, but just what this means on Sunday,
- 6:07Speaker 3: what it meant on Sunday, and what it means for
- 6:09Speaker 3: this season and the rest of this season. And I
- 6:13Speaker 3: think the disappointing part about it is, well, just come
- 6:17Speaker 3: out and say it. You blew a twenty one point lead, right,
- 6:20Speaker 3: So that's obviously in itself a disappointing part. But the
- 6:24Speaker 3: second part that I think is the most disheartening was
- 6:27Speaker 3: that this was the first time that Josh McDaniels and
- 6:31Speaker 3: Drake May didn't seem to have any answers, Like it
- 6:33Speaker 3: was the first time all season where they just couldn't offensively.
- 6:39Speaker 3: They couldn't put a drive together when they needed a drive,
- 6:42Speaker 3: And all year long, McDaniels has pressed all the right buttons.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Drake may has made all the plays, even going back
- 6:48Speaker 3: to Week five against Buffalo in Buffalo on that game
- 6:51Speaker 3: winning drive. So you just look at all these different
- 6:53Speaker 3: types of things that happened, and you're discouraged by the
- 6:58Speaker 3: fact that they blewed twenty one point lead seventeen at halftime.
- 7:02Speaker 3: You're discouraged by the fact that they for the first
- 7:06Speaker 3: time really all year, didn't have the answers to the
- 7:09Speaker 3: test offensively, and we can break down exactly what happened
- 7:12Speaker 3: there and then defensively. There was some things that were
- 7:16Speaker 3: going on under the hood that we talked about on
- 7:18Speaker 3: this show, not bragging, just saying we did, and that
- 7:23Speaker 3: were kind of going on under the hood during the
- 7:25Speaker 3: ten game winning streak and the Chickens kind of came
- 7:28Speaker 3: home to roost finally on some of these things. And
- 7:30Speaker 3: I'm talking about the red zone defense, the run defense,
- 7:35Speaker 3: the lack of pressure with four you know, you have
- 7:38Speaker 3: to kind of blitz in disguise and you know, draw
- 7:41Speaker 3: it up to get pressure on the quarterback without Millon
- 7:44Speaker 3: Williams out there. So all these different things that contributed
- 7:49Speaker 3: on the micro level to this loss are discouraging, even
- 7:53Speaker 3: though I still think the arrow is pointed upward on
- 7:57Speaker 3: where they're going in the macro sense of it. But
- 8:00Speaker 3: let's get into some of the micro you know, we
- 8:02Speaker 3: start big and then we zoom in, you know, zooming
- 8:05Speaker 3: into it. I want to get to the good, bad
- 8:08Speaker 3: stuff that gets you beat. But did you just have
- 8:09Speaker 3: any opinions on it? Big picture, little picture?
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you. I mean big picture, Look, they're
- 8:16Speaker 2: right there. But I think it's maybe a reminder that
- 8:20Speaker 2: and we talked about a lot. Hey, this is a
- 8:24Speaker 2: young team, this is a new team. It's a bunch
- 8:26Speaker 2: of guys that haven't been together that long, even if
- 8:28Speaker 2: they have experience elsewhere, and those teams typically go through
- 8:32Speaker 2: growing pains, and we'd been surprised at the lack of
- 8:35Speaker 2: growing pains over the course of this season, which they
- 8:39Speaker 2: should have had more, and credit to them that they didn't.
- 8:43Speaker 2: This game was kind of a frank reminder of, oh, yeah,
- 8:46Speaker 2: this is still a team that kind of needs to
- 8:48Speaker 2: learn what to do when they get in that situation. Now,
- 8:50Speaker 2: what you hope is, because I'm somebody who's been. You know,
- 8:53Speaker 2: I can't I criticize teams all the time for blowing
- 8:55Speaker 2: big leads. I can't come in here and say it's fine, right, yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 2: shouldn't blow up twenty point one point lead at home
- 9:01Speaker 2: to a division opponent with the division on the line,
- 9:03Speaker 2: like that is a bad loss. However you want to
- 9:05Speaker 2: spin it, you want to talk about, Okay, well, it
- 9:07Speaker 2: shows they're making progress and it shows they're better in
- 9:09Speaker 2: the long term. That can be true, but it's still
- 9:12Speaker 2: a bad loss. And now next time they're in this situation,
- 9:15Speaker 2: you know there's gonna be that question. The Patriots have
- 9:17Speaker 2: not been a good fourth quarter team for a few
- 9:19Speaker 2: weeks now. It just hasn't mattered because they've gotten off
- 9:22Speaker 2: to these big leads. Right Well, now, you know, against
- 9:26Speaker 2: a better opponent that came back to bite them. So
- 9:29Speaker 2: this is gonna be something they're gonna have to figure out.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Now.
- 9:31Speaker 2: They've done a great job this year when we come
- 9:33Speaker 2: in after a game and talk about, well, this is
- 9:35Speaker 2: a question, this is a question, this is a question.
- 9:37Speaker 2: They've done a good job of answering them and answering
- 9:39Speaker 2: them pretty quickly and answering them positively as well. So
- 9:42Speaker 2: we'll see if and when they get their redemption shot
- 9:44Speaker 2: at this one. But it's it's a tough loss, and
- 9:49Speaker 2: this was a game where you want, especially once you
- 9:52Speaker 2: got that big lead, keep the clock running shorten a
- 9:54Speaker 2: game established ball control they get. I don't want to
- 9:58Speaker 2: be too on them for getting away from the run
- 10:02Speaker 2: in the second half simply because they had to get
- 10:05Speaker 2: away from everything because they only ran eighteen plays. Yeah,
- 10:07Speaker 2: and that forty six to eighteen play disparity in the
- 10:10Speaker 2: second half is on all three phases. So to say, oh, well,
- 10:13Speaker 2: they lost control of the game because they didn't run
- 10:15Speaker 2: the football, I don't think that's incorrect. But I also
- 10:17Speaker 2: think that that's a monumental under cell of what happened.
- 10:21Speaker 2: That wasn't like the one thing that led to all
- 10:24Speaker 2: of it. And you know, for the people want to
- 10:26Speaker 2: look at it and say, hey, they got up to
- 10:28Speaker 2: twenty one point lead on the Bills. That's good, that's encouraging,
- 10:30Speaker 2: Like I don't. You can have some you know, you
- 10:35Speaker 2: can kind of look at that. You can look at
- 10:37Speaker 2: that game and say there's positives.
- 10:40Speaker 3: It's interesting.
- 10:40Speaker 2: When I was on with David Andrews on Monday, he
- 10:42Speaker 2: talked about the twenty eighteen season when they lost to
- 10:45Speaker 2: Pittsburgh and they lost to Miami at the end of
- 10:46Speaker 2: the year, and it's a different context because that team
- 10:49Speaker 2: was a veteran tea in their experience blah blahlah whatever.
- 10:51Speaker 2: But people kind of pointed maybe not so much to
- 10:54Speaker 2: the Miami loss, but the Pittsburgh loss as hey, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: they needed to lose one, and it's good perspective and
- 11:00Speaker 2: it'll get them reset. And Andrew said, in the minute moment,
- 11:03Speaker 2: you're a player there, you're sitting there saying, no, we
- 11:04Speaker 2: don't want to whether we want to lose, we don't
- 11:06Speaker 2: need to lose.
- 11:07Speaker 3: That's bad.
- 11:07Speaker 2: You're frustrated with the loss, he said. Then they won
- 11:09Speaker 2: the Super Bowl and you look back and like, okay,
- 11:12Speaker 2: like you know that that that kind of helps shift
- 11:13Speaker 2: the perspective.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Well, it certainly helped this team and when they lost
- 11:16Speaker 3: to Pittsburgh.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Right, so you you hope it's one of those uh,
- 11:20Speaker 2: you know, we could do the whole and again it's
- 11:22Speaker 2: it's not exactly apples to apples, but people love to
- 11:25Speaker 2: do the debate. If the seven team had lost once
- 11:27Speaker 2: during the regular season would have helped them, and you know,
- 11:30Speaker 2: it's not exactly that again, but like it's just not
- 11:33Speaker 2: it had to be, but like it had to be
- 11:35Speaker 2: that game in that way, that's not just like a loss.
- 11:40Speaker 3: It did dawn on me multiple times because call it
- 11:44Speaker 3: O seven PTSD would call whatever you want. I never
- 11:47Speaker 3: want the Patriots to be on some like ten plus
- 11:51Speaker 3: game winning streak going into the playoffs. Ever, again, I
- 11:53Speaker 3: am completely done with that. Like I've seen that, I've
- 11:57Speaker 3: been there, you know, I know in two that one
- 12:00Speaker 3: they rattled off like ten straight eight eleven straight won
- 12:02Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. They've had years like that in the
- 12:05Speaker 3: Brady years where they where they just were a wagon
- 12:07Speaker 3: and they just won all the way through the playoffs.
- 12:10Speaker 3: But in that sense, I do think that it could
- 12:13Speaker 3: be a good thing to have one hiccup. Now, you
- 12:15Speaker 3: mentioned the second half offense, and I will be the
- 12:19Speaker 3: first to admit I downplayed the lack of second half
- 12:23Speaker 3: offense because of the reason you said, they really haven't
- 12:26Speaker 3: needed it. They haven't played a team that's been good
- 12:29Speaker 3: enough to push them in the second half of games
- 12:32Speaker 3: where it was necessary to empty the clip offensively. So
- 12:35Speaker 3: I'm not going into these games thinking, oh, would have
- 12:39Speaker 3: been nice for Josh McDaniels to script together a drive
- 12:41Speaker 3: against the Giants or the Jets, Like why would you
- 12:44Speaker 3: use those plays against the Giants and the Jets? Like
- 12:46Speaker 3: if you have these plays that could maybe get you
- 12:49Speaker 3: in rhythm or out of a rut or whatever the
- 12:51Speaker 3: case may be. So I downplayed it, But now I
- 12:57Speaker 3: think that we have to call this a trend, like
- 12:59Speaker 3: this is a thing, and I would say, you know,
- 13:02Speaker 3: before I rattle off a few numbers. It's also they
- 13:08Speaker 3: had a sixty five yard touchdown run in the second
- 13:10Speaker 3: half of this game. They had a huge touchdown run
- 13:13Speaker 3: in the Tampa Bay game in the second half, and
- 13:17Speaker 3: then outside of that, they haven't really sustained any drives,
- 13:21Speaker 3: Like they've had one play sixty five yard touchdown type drives,
- 13:25Speaker 3: but they haven't really had a whole lot of sustained
- 13:28Speaker 3: offensive success going into the third and fourth quarters of games. Now,
- 13:33Speaker 3: they used to be like around the Titans Browns that
- 13:38Speaker 3: area of the season. They were a great third quarter team.
- 13:42Speaker 3: They were at blowing doors in the third quarter. But
- 13:45Speaker 3: really since that Atlanta game where they lost a big
- 13:47Speaker 3: lead again and had to hold on at the end
- 13:50Speaker 3: against the Falcons. Since that Atlanta game, they have not
- 13:53Speaker 3: been a good second half team, and they are now
- 13:56Speaker 3: the best first half offense in football. They are number
- 13:59Speaker 3: one points their number one in EPA in the first
- 14:02Speaker 3: half of games, and the second half of games they're
- 14:05Speaker 3: twenty second in scoring offense. So there's clearly a trend here,
- 14:10Speaker 3: there's clearly numbers that back up. This is no longer anecdotal,
- 14:14Speaker 3: and I don't think you can no longer use the
- 14:17Speaker 3: excuse of, well, you know, you're up big against the Jets,
- 14:20Speaker 3: what do you you know, what difference does it make?
- 14:22Speaker 3: So the second half offense is a real issue and
- 14:26Speaker 3: something that they need to address now. I don't know
- 14:30Speaker 3: if he would talk about this in the press conference,
- 14:32Speaker 3: but I think one thing that's interesting to me is
- 14:35Speaker 3: that my understanding with Josh McDaniels has always been that
- 14:39Speaker 3: he's not a big script guy. Like he's not one
- 14:42Speaker 3: of those coordinators that comes into a game and scripts
- 14:44Speaker 3: the first fifteen to twenty plays, which is a lot
- 14:47Speaker 3: of the time. What you see with offenses that sput
- 14:50Speaker 3: her out is that the coordinator just has a great
- 14:52Speaker 3: play sheet for the first like fifteen to twenty plays,
- 14:55Speaker 3: you know, two or three drives, and then once they
- 14:58Speaker 3: get out of the script, defense adjusts and they don't
- 15:01Speaker 3: really have anything else. McDaniel's in the past has not
- 15:04Speaker 3: been somebody that calls games that way. Usually in the
- 15:09Speaker 3: past he would call the first couple of drives was
- 15:12Speaker 3: actually more about gathering information of like, if we put
- 15:16Speaker 3: this personnel on the field, you know, how are they
- 15:19Speaker 3: gonna match our base Like how are they going to
- 15:22Speaker 3: match twelve or twenty one personnel? Are they going to
- 15:24Speaker 3: match that with nickel or are they going to match
- 15:26Speaker 3: that with base defense? If we run this formation, you know,
- 15:30Speaker 3: how are they going what are they going to check
- 15:32Speaker 3: to to cover this bunch or what are they going
- 15:34Speaker 3: to check to to cover this motion? And then what
- 15:37Speaker 3: we you can do with that is that you use
- 15:39Speaker 3: that as information for later in the game whenever, you know,
- 15:42Speaker 3: when the stakes are higher. So that's how he's done
- 15:44Speaker 3: it in the past. But it does feel like based
- 15:47Speaker 3: off of the data that they are coming out like
- 15:51Speaker 3: gangbusters in the first half with the really good script,
- 15:54Speaker 3: and then right around halftime they fizzle out and that's it.
- 15:57Speaker 3: So I don't know if that's changed. I don't know
- 15:59Speaker 3: if having a young quarterback has changed that or whatever
- 16:03Speaker 3: the case may be, but that's one theory, and I
- 16:06Speaker 3: do want to talk about some of the good things.
- 16:08Speaker 3: But what are you seeing in the second half of
- 16:10Speaker 3: these games, because it is kind of bizarre that they
- 16:13Speaker 3: are literally the best offense in football for two quarters
- 16:16Speaker 3: and then they can't put together a first down in
- 16:18Speaker 3: the in the fourth quarter of games.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it feels like there's a ramp down
- 16:22Speaker 2: a little bit. I think some of it they're playing
- 16:24Speaker 2: the clock, which I'm not inherently against what we've talked
- 16:26Speaker 2: about their issues in the run game. Yeah, and so
- 16:28Speaker 2: when you're trying to play the clock and you're struggling
- 16:30Speaker 2: to run the ball, it'll slow you down a little bit. So,
- 16:32Speaker 2: I mean, I think that's been part of it. It's
- 16:33Speaker 2: been a little different every game, but you know, struggling
- 16:36Speaker 2: to run the ball and then just trying to manage
- 16:38Speaker 2: the clock as much as they are, you know, I
- 16:40Speaker 2: think they're okay with with the They're just trying to
- 16:43Speaker 2: keep the clock running, yea more so than push the ball,
- 16:46Speaker 2: and they're just trying to get to the finish, which
- 16:47Speaker 2: inherently I don't hate, but you got to be able
- 16:49Speaker 2: to run the ball to do.
- 16:50Speaker 3: That, all right, let's get into the good and the
- 16:52Speaker 3: bad and the stuff that gets to be There is
- 16:54Speaker 3: a lot of good from this game that I want
- 16:56Speaker 3: to talk about. Yeah, the first half, well if it's
- 16:58Speaker 3: in the first half for the most part, but I
- 17:01Speaker 3: thought that there was some really good stuff in the
- 17:04Speaker 3: first half of this game, specifically in the run game.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Obviously offensively, to me, this was probably the best game
- 17:12Speaker 3: the offensive line's played all year, and the run blocking
- 17:17Speaker 3: in particular was really really good. Eighty nine yards before
- 17:21Speaker 3: contact in this game is a season high. So the
- 17:24Speaker 3: running backs now on his cut back, I guess technically,
- 17:27Speaker 3: you know, Travon Henderson probably wasn't touched, but you know,
- 17:30Speaker 3: eighty nine yards before contact is a good number. That's
- 17:34Speaker 3: a workable number. You know, they had almost a sixty
- 17:37Speaker 3: percent rushing success rate thirty two percent pressure rate for
- 17:40Speaker 3: the game. But the first half run game, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 3: just in general, one hundred and forty two rushing yards
- 17:46Speaker 3: on nineteen carries. That's seven and a half yards of carry,
- 17:50Speaker 3: three touchdowns, all on the ground. This was a really
- 17:53Speaker 3: really good half for the offensive line, a really really
- 17:56Speaker 3: good half for the run game. Finally, this has been
- 17:59Speaker 3: a run game that has really struggled. Now the Bills
- 18:03Speaker 3: run defense has really struggled, But the Patriots played the
- 18:05Speaker 3: Giants a few weeks ago with a historically bad run
- 18:09Speaker 3: defense and didn't really run the ball particularly well against
- 18:12Speaker 3: the Giants. Same thing with the Bengals. So this has
- 18:15Speaker 3: been a weakness on weakness thing for like a month now,
- 18:18Speaker 3: where they faced week run defenses with a week rush offense.
- 18:21Speaker 3: This was the first time that they exposed a week
- 18:25Speaker 3: run defense and hopefully that is a sign of things
- 18:28Speaker 3: to come, because December football January football, like it would
- 18:32Speaker 3: be a nice thing to have if they could run
- 18:34Speaker 3: the ball here a little bit.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's what made it so exciting. Not only
- 18:38Speaker 2: were they beating the Bills, they were you know, doing
- 18:41Speaker 2: so in ways where they hadn't been able to succeed
- 18:44Speaker 2: in recent weeks, so it felt even more encouraging. Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I thought the blocking in particular, they gave the backs
- 18:49Speaker 2: room and a lot of people are going to talk
- 18:51Speaker 2: about the game Travan Anderson had, and he had a
- 18:53Speaker 2: great game. Modern Stevenson was really good too, agreed, in
- 18:57Speaker 2: the first half, and obviously they kind of went away
- 18:59Speaker 2: from him as they went away for the run game again.
- 19:00Speaker 2: They only had eighteen plays in the second half. But
- 19:03Speaker 2: I thought you saw a great example of where Trayvon
- 19:06Speaker 2: Henderson was great was those big plays outside of those
- 19:08Speaker 2: two carries, and I don't want to erase them. I
- 19:11Speaker 2: mean they're massive plays in the game. Outside of those
- 19:13Speaker 2: two carries. I think he averaged like three yards of carry, yeah,
- 19:16Speaker 2: where Stevenson averaged what was it, like five something yards
- 19:20Speaker 2: of carry but didn't ever run longer than thirteen yards.
- 19:23Speaker 2: So we've talked about their need for that intermediate run game,
- 19:28Speaker 2: just the kind of sustaining Not every run is going
- 19:30Speaker 2: to be the home run. So when you're not hitting
- 19:32Speaker 2: those or you're still managing to get four or five
- 19:35Speaker 2: six yards on the ground, that's frankly what the Bills
- 19:37Speaker 2: did in the second half that gave the Patriots so
- 19:39Speaker 2: much trouble. And Ramandre Stevenson still looks like the better
- 19:43Speaker 2: back in that regard. So I said going in, I
- 19:45Speaker 2: wanted to see more of a healthy split of the
- 19:46Speaker 2: two backs. I thought it'd set up well in the
- 19:48Speaker 2: first half, and then obviously they weren't able to keep
- 19:50Speaker 2: it going in the second half.
- 19:51Speaker 3: This was the vision, you know, this was the vision
- 19:52Speaker 3: of Vermandre kind of being the singles hitter, grind out
- 19:55Speaker 3: the tough yards, run between the tackles. Trevon Henderson is
- 19:59Speaker 3: your home run hitter. This was what they envisioned when
- 20:02Speaker 3: they drafted him. This is a you know, I thought
- 20:05Speaker 3: also probably one of their best plans, like in terms
- 20:09Speaker 3: of game planning in the run game as well. The
- 20:12Speaker 3: tackle power plays with Morgan Moses pulling instead of Mike
- 20:15Speaker 3: on Wnhu pulling really worked. I think that's something that
- 20:18Speaker 3: they might have found works a little bit better. You know,
- 20:20Speaker 3: Moses just a little bit more nimble, a little bit
- 20:22Speaker 3: more athletic in space than Mike on WNU. Who's better
- 20:26Speaker 3: in a phone booth, you know, So keep Mike on
- 20:28Speaker 3: when who you know, base blocking on the line of scrimmage,
- 20:31Speaker 3: let him turn guys out. Let Moses be the one
- 20:33Speaker 3: that polls. That really seemed to work out a lot
- 20:37Speaker 3: they I know, everybody hates the draws, but they did
- 20:39Speaker 3: get some draws going in this game too, some inside
- 20:41Speaker 3: draws that were successful. You know. Obviously, the toss plays
- 20:46Speaker 3: you know, ended up working, you know, kind of the
- 20:47Speaker 3: damn kind of broke on those as well. But the
- 20:50Speaker 3: power plays, you know, pulling the guards or pulling Morgan Moses.
- 20:54Speaker 3: You know, Jared Wilson pulls out in front of Trayvon
- 20:57Speaker 3: Henderson on his first long touchdown run. That thing could
- 21:00Speaker 3: not have been blocked better. That was a that is
- 21:03Speaker 3: teach tape of how to block one back power. I mean,
- 21:06Speaker 3: that was just perfect execution. Egos untouched to the house
- 21:10Speaker 3: for fifty plus yards. That was all on the blocking.
- 21:13Speaker 3: I thought Garrett Bradberry was outstanding in this game, had
- 21:17Speaker 3: multiple standout run blocks. Watching this game back so really
- 21:22Speaker 3: encouraging stuff. And then of course, you know we have
- 21:25Speaker 3: to talk about the Drake runs and you know, getting
- 21:28Speaker 3: that going in the red zone was something that I
- 21:31Speaker 3: think we all sort of felt like was in their
- 21:33Speaker 3: back pocket and something that they could pull out in
- 21:36Speaker 3: a big game. They decided to pull it out this week,
- 21:39Speaker 3: and I obviously, you know, two runs, two touchdowns couldn't
- 21:43Speaker 3: go much better than it did. And I really liked
- 21:46Speaker 3: the way that they had a couple of different wrinkles
- 21:49Speaker 3: and a couple of different designs on them as well.
- 21:52Speaker 3: You know, the first ones like a peer zone read
- 21:54Speaker 3: and the second one was a quarterback draw. I thought
- 21:57Speaker 3: that that second one probably was an RP where he's
- 22:00Speaker 3: kind of reading the linebacker. Is he going to drop
- 22:03Speaker 3: out into coverage or is he going to join the rush.
- 22:05Speaker 3: If he joins the rush, you throw it. If he
- 22:06Speaker 3: drops out, you run it. But both of them worked.
- 22:10Speaker 3: The second one worked really well. The first one they
- 22:13Speaker 3: got some good blocks on the perimeter there by Booty
- 22:15Speaker 3: and Hunter Henry to help him get in. But that
- 22:20Speaker 3: that was exactly what the doctor ordered. It seemed like
- 22:22Speaker 3: in the red zone. And now you put that on
- 22:24Speaker 3: film and now teams have to prepare for his legs
- 22:27Speaker 3: down there, and you can have different things that branch
- 22:30Speaker 3: off of those two kind of core plays of your
- 22:34Speaker 3: run game down there in the red zone. So that
- 22:37Speaker 3: was extremely encouraging that they finally got some red zone
- 22:40Speaker 3: success with the Drake runs.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of people talked about it going into
- 22:44Speaker 2: the bay, right, what's one of the wrinkles you want
- 22:46Speaker 2: to see fix the red zone and maybe get Drake's
- 22:48Speaker 2: legs involved, And they did it, even that second run.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I know this has been said, but in case anybody
- 22:51Speaker 2: missed it, like you see the linemen start to get
- 22:54Speaker 2: up to the next level, so it looked like he scrambled,
- 22:56Speaker 2: but that's a designed Yeah, like that's a delayed quarterback run.
- 22:59Speaker 2: If he throws, that be a legal man downfield. So
- 23:02Speaker 2: they put that wrinkle in, and you're right, even if
- 23:04Speaker 2: they don't go back to it a ton, it's now
- 23:06Speaker 2: something teams are gonna have to think about and be
- 23:08Speaker 2: prepared for.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was. It was well designed. It was
- 23:12Speaker 3: well done by Drake. Now, I didn't think that Drake
- 23:15Speaker 3: May did a whole lot of heavy lifting in the
- 23:17Speaker 3: first half of this game. But he was still nine
- 23:20Speaker 3: to eleven with one hundred and eight yards passing, So
- 23:22Speaker 3: it wasn't It was a pretty good statistical half for
- 23:25Speaker 3: Drake May in the first half at least, you know,
- 23:27Speaker 3: one hundred percent tile epa per drop back. I mean,
- 23:30Speaker 3: he was he was dealing. He was dealing in the
- 23:32Speaker 3: offense was humming in the first half. Now, like I said,
- 23:35Speaker 3: it wasn't a ton of heavy lifting. I you know,
- 23:38Speaker 3: the runs were more the highlights. You know, the seventeen
- 23:41Speaker 3: yard scramble in particular was just a great run by him.
- 23:44Speaker 3: But we're gonna probably say some not so flattering things
- 23:48Speaker 3: about Drake May here in a few minutes. And the
- 23:51Speaker 3: first half I thought was was really good from him,
- 23:54Speaker 3: and he was doing his thing. He was doing the
- 23:56Speaker 3: MVP thing. You know, you're running, you're you're throwing, you're
- 23:59Speaker 3: running in touchdown. That that was the type of half
- 24:01Speaker 3: that he, you know, has. It makes you think that
- 24:05Speaker 3: this guy can beat Josh Allen right toe. So that
- 24:09Speaker 3: was the offense. Defensively, I tried to come up with
- 24:12Speaker 3: some good things to put for the defense. I had
- 24:14Speaker 3: a tougher time, frankly than the offense. I did not
- 24:17Speaker 3: think the defense played particularly well at in this game
- 24:21Speaker 3: from start to finish. The opening drive is Buffalo has
- 24:24Speaker 3: two wide open receivers that they stub their own toe
- 24:28Speaker 3: Like Brandon comes is wide open and he bobbles the
- 24:31Speaker 3: ball and falls out of bounds. Dalton Kincaid's wide open
- 24:35Speaker 3: on third down and Josh Allen airmails it. Like So
- 24:39Speaker 3: was that good defense or was that bad offense? They
- 24:42Speaker 3: did have some good rushes in the first half. I thought,
- 24:45Speaker 3: you know, pass rushes. They had one nice blitz on
- 24:49Speaker 3: third down. I think it was the second drive of
- 24:51Speaker 3: the game for Buffalo.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Yeah, was that the one they sent Marcus Jones?
- 24:54Speaker 3: Yeah, where they got some free runners and they really
- 24:57Speaker 3: it was a good blitz. Good call, and then Harold
- 25:01Speaker 3: Landry had sack. Was a nice rush by him and
- 25:03Speaker 3: Barmore on the stunt over the right hand side there.
- 25:06Speaker 3: So I put first half pass rush. I thought that
- 25:09Speaker 3: it was solid.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Better.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Now do you maybe you like to see them hold
- 25:15Speaker 3: that blitz in their back pocket for the fourth quarter? Like,
- 25:18Speaker 3: I guess you could make that argument, but I'm not
- 25:20Speaker 3: going to be two nimpicky. There were a couple of
- 25:22Speaker 3: good rushes in there. I thought in the first half
- 25:24Speaker 3: that that got them off the field in some big spots.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I have a problem with them using it
- 25:28Speaker 2: there because you want to you want to get ahead,
- 25:30Speaker 2: and they this is what's crazy. I mean about this
- 25:32Speaker 2: whole game. We can talk, you know, we'll talk more
- 25:35Speaker 2: about this show was on a lot of what the
- 25:37Speaker 2: Bills did, a lot of what happened in that game,
- 25:40Speaker 2: and Mike Rabel kind of said this after the game.
- 25:43Speaker 2: There were no surprises. The Bills did not. There were
- 25:46Speaker 2: a couple of small wrinkles here and there. But Mike
- 25:49Speaker 2: Vrabel talked during the week about, hey, we got to
- 25:52Speaker 2: play sixteen minutes as a team that knows how to
- 25:54Speaker 2: come back. They're not out of any game despite deaf sit.
- 25:57Speaker 2: We'll get to the kick return. Jeremy Springer talked about
- 25:59Speaker 2: the kick returning unit things like that, like they knew
- 26:01Speaker 2: they had to get the momentum as quickly as possible.
- 26:04Speaker 2: So I don't mind using that play early because, yeah,
- 26:07Speaker 2: you get up twenty one nothing, you should win the game, right,
- 26:09Speaker 2: And that's probably the thought process is let's not keep
- 26:11Speaker 2: it in our back pocket for when the Bills have
- 26:14Speaker 2: all this momentum and are steaming downhill, let's prevent them
- 26:16Speaker 2: from getting there. And they did that, so in that
- 26:18Speaker 2: sense it's encouraging. They just needed more just that one play.
- 26:22Speaker 3: So some major breaking news in the AFC East.
- 26:25Speaker 2: That I was gonna read this. I didn't usually get
- 26:28Speaker 2: annoyed when I pop in with breaking different things.
- 26:30Speaker 3: This is pretty major. Do you want to read or
- 26:32Speaker 3: do you want me to read it?
- 26:33Speaker 2: I will now. I don't know if we're thinking the
- 26:34Speaker 2: same thing.
- 26:35Speaker 3: The Dolphins are are benching to.
- 26:37Speaker 2: A oh no, all right, Wow, I had a different thing.
- 26:41Speaker 2: They are benching to. The Dolphins made another move to, well,
- 26:44Speaker 2: they benched to it. Okay, they also cut Matthew Judon.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Okay, Well, benching to is a bigger deal than that. Well,
- 26:49Speaker 3: Matthew Judon's washed. Sorry no, I love Matthew Judon from
- 26:54Speaker 3: what he did for the Patriots for a couple of
- 26:55Speaker 3: years there, but that's that's not a no anyways. Has
- 26:59Speaker 3: he been like a good secial teams player for maybe
- 27:02Speaker 3: you can tell me that. I don't know. So Tua's cut, benched,
- 27:06Speaker 3: not cut, Sorry, yeah, benched. Queen Yours is going to
- 27:09Speaker 3: start the rest of the way. So there's a short
- 27:12Speaker 3: term implication of this, which is the Patriots play the
- 27:15Speaker 3: Dolphins in Week eighteen and probably are gonna need to
- 27:17Speaker 3: win that game to win the AFCs, so they'll they'll
- 27:20Speaker 3: be up against Queen Yours it sounds like, but this
- 27:23Speaker 3: is a massive, massive move for the Dolphins because I
- 27:29Speaker 3: don't know how you come back from this with Tua,
- 27:31Speaker 3: Like do you go back to Tua for twenty twenty six?
- 27:34Speaker 3: I think that's hard to do. He's not hurt. You're
- 27:37Speaker 3: benching him because of performance, So I think that that's
- 27:41Speaker 3: hard to do. Now they might have a new head
- 27:43Speaker 3: coach as well. But so this could be the end
- 27:45Speaker 3: of the two eight era in Miami, is what I'm
- 27:47Speaker 3: trying to So I.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Talked about this yesterday on felgrin MAZ, do you let
- 27:54Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel pick a new quarterback? Because if you do that,
- 27:59Speaker 2: and I know there's been this whole run of first
- 28:01Speaker 2: round picks who or first overall picks, who's coaches got
- 28:04Speaker 2: fired whatever, But like, you don't want to be that
- 28:06Speaker 2: team right now.
- 28:07Speaker 3: So and this isn't really a class to be.
- 28:11Speaker 2: And this is not a class. No, so if but
- 28:13Speaker 2: if if you're if you're going with a new quarterback,
- 28:16Speaker 2: to me, that means in part that you're committing to
- 28:20Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel for two more years.
- 28:21Speaker 3: You also want a victory lap on Mike McDaniel.
- 28:24Speaker 2: He should have been fired a long time ago. I mean,
- 28:26Speaker 2: I think my my stance is pretty clear on that.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Is a new GM going to want new GM is
- 28:32Speaker 2: not going to want to inherit a quarterback, especially not
- 28:34Speaker 2: a quarterback like Toua with this contract, who plays this way.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Is he gonna want to inherit that coach? So that's
- 28:39Speaker 2: what it comes down to me. I would move on
- 28:41Speaker 2: from both. I don't think that's surprising anybody, but I.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Think that's where we're headed. But you also, it's bold
- 28:50Speaker 3: as an organization to allow Mike McDaniel to make this decision,
- 28:54Speaker 3: because if you're too, like this could burn a bridge
- 28:57Speaker 3: with two that there's no coming back from if you
- 28:59Speaker 3: want to have to as a part of your future
- 29:01Speaker 3: at all. And I know they don't know who's gonna
- 29:04Speaker 3: be running a team, but you understand what I'm getting at,
- 29:07Speaker 3: Like you if you know Mike McDaniel's a lamb duck
- 29:09Speaker 3: head coach and he's gonna get fired at the end
- 29:12Speaker 3: of the year, Like, do you let that coach bench
- 29:14Speaker 3: your franchise quarterback? Like that's that's a big move to
- 29:18Speaker 3: allow guy that's going to be fired in three weeks.
- 29:21Speaker 2: So unless you know, are you moving on from both
- 29:23Speaker 2: of them?
- 29:24Speaker 3: Yeah, fair enough, But I just it's an interesting move
- 29:28Speaker 3: obviously in the short term that Miami game. Look, the
- 29:33Speaker 3: Dolphins have played spoiler before. We all remember twenty nineteen.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Yeah, this isn't like the upstart Dolphins with Brian Flores
- 29:39Speaker 2: trying to prove the owner wrong.
- 29:41Speaker 5: Though.
- 29:41Speaker 2: This is a little different.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Yeah, this is sky is following the franchise. Fifty six
- 29:46Speaker 3: million dollars quarterback is benched and now they're going to
- 29:49Speaker 3: have to come up here in week eighteen. It's probably
- 29:51Speaker 3: gonna be freezing and play a game against the Patriots
- 29:54Speaker 3: who are probably gonna need it to win the division.
- 29:57Speaker 3: So some things breaking the Patriots way there in Miami. Uh,
- 30:03Speaker 3: let's get back to real quick.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Where yours wasn't bo Nix your comp for him, like
- 30:07Speaker 2: a year ago, a year and a half ago.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Oh No, I don't think he's as talented as both. Okay, no,
- 30:12Speaker 3: I think he's got.
- 30:12Speaker 2: A well, I think I might have been a lesser
- 30:14Speaker 2: Bonnix was your comp.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think he's got a great arm. So
- 30:18Speaker 3: I'm not a big Queen Ears guy. I think that
- 30:21Speaker 3: once you saw him a little bit in the college
- 30:23Speaker 3: football playoff and and the struggles that he had pushing
- 30:26Speaker 3: the ball down the field. Uh, in terms of arm strength,
- 30:28Speaker 3: you know, he's he's maybe a little bit more talented
- 30:31Speaker 3: than like a mac Jones, but it's not much that
- 30:34Speaker 3: arm isn't isn't great. But we'll see, Uh, we'll see
- 30:38Speaker 3: with Quen yours that that's a that's an interesting move.
- 30:42Speaker 3: I think that. I do think.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I will say I do think it's less damning that
- 30:47Speaker 2: they make it now when they're eliminated from the playoffs,
- 30:50Speaker 2: because this could also be and whether this is true
- 30:52Speaker 2: or not, you know, you sell it to too is
- 30:53Speaker 2: well we're out. You know, I think he's been playing
- 30:56Speaker 2: through something, right, he's banged up. I mean, he was awful,
- 31:01Speaker 2: I know, but you can you can sell this as
- 31:04Speaker 2: I think he's.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Really like even though they've won some games, like he's been.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Bad, right, And no I'm not.
- 31:11Speaker 3: There is also some stuff and I don't necessarily care
- 31:13Speaker 3: about this at all, but you know, I don't know
- 31:17Speaker 3: how much it rubbed the teammates a great way. And
- 31:20Speaker 3: I'm not down there.
- 31:21Speaker 2: But when he said the thing about the meetings or whatever.
- 31:24Speaker 3: And he's like smiling and like having a great time
- 31:26Speaker 3: as they're getting blown out by the Steelers, I just
- 31:29Speaker 3: think that it was over. I think the whole thing.
- 31:31Speaker 2: I think so too. But I do think it's if
- 31:33Speaker 2: they were still in playoff contention and they did this,
- 31:35Speaker 2: it's a lot more damning and and it's still damning,
- 31:37Speaker 2: but like, you know, okay, like like the commanders are
- 31:42Speaker 2: doing Jadan Daniels, Hey, we're gonna sit you down. We're
- 31:44Speaker 2: out of playoffs. We don't want to get hurt. Sure,
- 31:46Speaker 2: YadA YadA, YadA, like and I don't think that's what
- 31:49Speaker 2: this is. I think this is a benching. But they
- 31:50Speaker 2: can at least kind of sell it like that. Where
- 31:52Speaker 2: is if you bention when you're still alive for the playoffs,
- 31:54Speaker 2: there's no right, there's no two ways around what that is.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Fair point. I just think that it's an interesting thing
- 32:00Speaker 3: to do with Mike McDaniel on such thin ice that
- 32:05Speaker 3: you're allowing a coach that's job security is not great
- 32:10Speaker 3: to bench a guy that you owe fifty six millions.
- 32:13Speaker 2: You already know that what's happening to that.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Coach, But if you're going to fire him, allowing him
- 32:18Speaker 3: to make a decision like that is bold.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Well, unless you know you're moving on from both.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Right, So maybe, but that's the only way that this
- 32:24Speaker 3: is kind of makes.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Sense or or it's yeah, like if they're so you're saying, like,
- 32:29Speaker 2: what if they want to stick it out with two
- 32:31Speaker 2: of them move on for McDaniels, correct, Well, then it
- 32:34Speaker 2: becomes well, no, he benched you, so he fired him,
- 32:37Speaker 2: and now we'll get you a new coach that'll fix it.
- 32:40Speaker 3: I don't know. It's a mess.
- 32:41Speaker 2: It's a mess.
- 32:42Speaker 3: It's a mess situation. Let's get back to the Patriots.
- 32:45Speaker 3: We can talk a little bit more about the Dolphins
- 32:47Speaker 3: A mess, and I'll come on, we can talk a
- 32:50Speaker 3: little I thought you were going to go into the
- 32:51Speaker 3: battle it's but but it's not. It wasn't a mess.
- 32:55Speaker 3: It was a little extreme, a little extreme.
- 32:58Speaker 2: It's a extreme.
- 33:00Speaker 3: So I put some things in the bads that you
- 33:03Speaker 3: maybe you might think are stuff that gets you beat.
- 33:06Speaker 3: But I thought, for the most part this was just bad,
- 33:09Speaker 3: not stuff that gets you beat. Let's start on. Let's
- 33:13Speaker 3: start with the offense. I just thought, for the first
- 33:17Speaker 3: time really all year, in the second half of this game,
- 33:22Speaker 3: I thought separation and just like receivers, seeing coverage and
- 33:27Speaker 3: understanding things. And I heard you talking a little bit
- 33:29Speaker 3: about Digs yesterday with Badard, and I agree with his
- 33:32Speaker 3: analysis that it seemed like everybody was confused about what
- 33:37Speaker 3: the Bills were doing in the second half, not just
- 33:39Speaker 3: Drake May. And that was a little bit weird to me,
- 33:45Speaker 3: because like, you have Digs, you have Hunter Henry, you
- 33:48Speaker 3: have Mac Collock. These are veteran guys. Yeah, you know,
- 33:50Speaker 3: these are veteran receivers. It just didn't seem like they
- 33:54Speaker 3: really It's like they went and it came out in
- 33:57Speaker 3: the second half, and they kind of like completely lost
- 34:01Speaker 3: a feel for the game, like they just didn't really
- 34:03Speaker 3: know what was going on from like reading out coverages,
- 34:06Speaker 3: seeing the rotations, all that kind of stuff, and just
- 34:10Speaker 3: going back to the first half. I come back to
- 34:13Speaker 3: that play in the two minute drill right before halftime
- 34:16Speaker 3: where the Bills rotting to cover three, Hunter Henry just
- 34:20Speaker 3: sits right down in the middle of the zones and
- 34:22Speaker 3: they hit like an eighteen yard play. And then in
- 34:25Speaker 3: the second half, they couldn't do that at all, you know,
- 34:27Speaker 3: they couldn't find the soft spots, they couldn't separate versus
- 34:30Speaker 3: man to man coverage. I think we've known for a
- 34:33Speaker 3: while now that this receiving gore is average, maybe you know,
- 34:38Speaker 3: like middling in the NFL, being elevated by a good
- 34:41Speaker 3: scheme and a great quarterback. But this was the first
- 34:44Speaker 3: time all year where that really came to roost, where
- 34:47Speaker 3: it just didn't feel like the guys were really getting
- 34:50Speaker 3: open for Drake May on tape and we'll talk about
- 34:53Speaker 3: Drake May. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't just all
- 34:56Speaker 3: on the receivers, but it was a little bit odd,
- 34:59Speaker 3: like I don't I want to call it concerning because
- 35:01Speaker 3: it hasn't happened yet until this point. It was more
- 35:04Speaker 3: just strange that they were all seem so kind of
- 35:07Speaker 3: flummixed by what the Bills were doing and all they
- 35:10Speaker 3: you know, they were doing a good job of disguising
- 35:12Speaker 3: it and dressing it up and spitting post snap and
- 35:15Speaker 3: all that good stuff. But they were just playing cover two.
- 35:18Speaker 3: It wasn't like it was like some exotic coverage that
- 35:21Speaker 3: they've never seen before. Uh. But I did think that
- 35:24Speaker 3: there was a lot uh in the second half of
- 35:28Speaker 3: covered snaps, like just where guys were just stuck to
- 35:32Speaker 3: coverage and couldn't get it separation. And even when there
- 35:35Speaker 3: were a few opportunities, it wasn't like guys were open
- 35:38Speaker 3: like it we're talking about, you know, the third down
- 35:40Speaker 3: throw to Hunter Henry that I'm sure Drake may would
- 35:42Speaker 3: want to have back. He's open, but it's not like
- 35:45Speaker 3: it's you know, wide open like we've seen some times
- 35:48Speaker 3: this year.
- 35:49Speaker 2: The whole thing goes back to I hate to keep
- 35:51Speaker 2: going back to this, but it's a story the game
- 35:53Speaker 2: for me. You run eighteen plays in the second half,
- 35:55Speaker 2: they never gotten a rhythm, and we've seen what this
- 35:57Speaker 2: offense can do when they get in Rythm. We saw
- 35:59Speaker 2: it in the first half. Yeah, and that impacts everybody
- 36:02Speaker 2: so and that impacts are out running. I think that
- 36:04Speaker 2: impacts the connection between the quarterback and the receivers, all
- 36:06Speaker 2: of it. And I do wonder too if some of
- 36:09Speaker 2: it was you know, they've got no more man, which
- 36:11Speaker 2: the Patriots weren't expecting, and that kind of threw some
- 36:14Speaker 2: things off as well.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean the last play of the game for
- 36:18Speaker 3: the Patriots, that fourth downplay that gave me some serious
- 36:22Speaker 3: like flashbacks to what this offense has looked like the
- 36:25Speaker 3: last few years, like from like twenty two to twenty four,
- 36:29Speaker 3: where it wasn't good, where you just have guys bottled up,
- 36:34Speaker 3: terrible spacing, like nobody open and it just looks like
- 36:38Speaker 3: a kind of a jumbled mess and you're just like,
- 36:41Speaker 3: what is going on here? And they played manton man coverage.
- 36:44Speaker 3: They dropped the ends out into like little like robber zones.
- 36:48Speaker 3: It was, but it wasn't like something that Digs and
- 36:52Speaker 3: Hunter Henry have never seen before that they should have
- 36:54Speaker 3: been totally stuck like glue to the coverage. It was.
- 36:59Speaker 3: It was odd. Now, I didn't put it in the
- 37:02Speaker 3: stuff that gets you beat because it hasn't happened routinely yet,
- 37:04Speaker 3: you know, I want to give them a couple of
- 37:07Speaker 3: some grace here and say, all right, if this happens again,
- 37:10Speaker 3: let's say on Sunday night against the Ravens, then maybe
- 37:13Speaker 3: we have more of a bigger picture concern here. Right now,
- 37:15Speaker 3: it's just bad. It's not stuff that gets you beat.
- 37:19Speaker 3: To me, the other category are things in this category
- 37:22Speaker 3: the run defense. This is just this is starting to
- 37:26Speaker 3: get under my skin a little bit out, yeah, because
- 37:31Speaker 3: the one thing that I think is a non negotiable
- 37:35Speaker 3: for Mike Rabel and this football team. You cannot let
- 37:40Speaker 3: the you know, posing run run running back right up
- 37:43Speaker 3: the gut, like you can't let them just run it
- 37:46Speaker 3: right down your throat like that. That is something that
- 37:49Speaker 3: needs to be unacceptable as a defense, right like especially
- 37:53Speaker 3: you know the A gaps, Like you can't just run
- 37:55Speaker 3: like James Cook run right through the A gap every
- 37:58Speaker 3: single time untouched. That that was concerning this run defense.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Since Milton Williams has gone out, has gone in the tank.
- 38:09Speaker 3: We've all put the stats up at this point, but
- 38:12Speaker 3: they're bottom five in the league and EPA and rushing
- 38:15Speaker 3: success rates without Milton Williams, after being top ten run
- 38:19Speaker 3: defense from pretty much the entire first nine weeks ten
- 38:22Speaker 3: weeks of the season. I think this kind of started
- 38:25Speaker 3: in Tampa. You know, Tampa had some cracks there in
- 38:28Speaker 3: the run defense with Milton Williams out there, and then
- 38:32Speaker 3: Milton Williams gets hurt against the Jets and then it's
- 38:34Speaker 3: really gone into the Crappers since then. So the couple
- 38:39Speaker 3: of different things about the run defense. You know, in
- 38:41Speaker 3: this game, James Cook eighty two for fifteen attempts on
- 38:47Speaker 3: inside runs, just right down your throat, eighty two rushing
- 38:50Speaker 3: yards fifteen attempts. That can't happen. You know, at some
- 38:53Speaker 3: point you have to put your big boys in the
- 38:56Speaker 3: A gaps and say run outside like you got you know,
- 39:00Speaker 3: like you got to run it someplace else because you're
- 39:02Speaker 3: not coming in here now. Roberts Blaine should have been
- 39:04Speaker 3: right there, right like that.
- 39:06Speaker 2: That right, that's an underrated loss too. Like obviously Milton
- 39:09Speaker 2: Williams a big part of it. I think, don't leave
- 39:10Speaker 2: out them not having Roberts Blaine.
- 39:12Speaker 3: But the fits and we'll get to this and the
- 39:15Speaker 3: stuff that gets you beat. So I'll put that on
- 39:17Speaker 3: the back burner. But just in general, this run defense
- 39:20Speaker 3: post Milton Williams injury has kind of fallen apart a
- 39:22Speaker 3: little bit here, a little bit.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, I do think getting him back
- 39:26Speaker 2: will help. Now they're not going to have him back
- 39:27Speaker 2: for this game against the Ravens, who run the ball
- 39:29Speaker 2: really well. So that's you know, and you hope they
- 39:32Speaker 2: have Roberts Blaine back. We'll see if he's out of
- 39:34Speaker 2: practice today, first practice of the week. But are there
- 39:37Speaker 2: some you know, people keep saying, is it a schematic thing?
- 39:39Speaker 2: Is it just as simple as personnel. I do think
- 39:41Speaker 2: there's you know, some schematic tweaks, but it's I don't
- 39:47Speaker 2: think it's a coincidence that the run defense fell off
- 39:49Speaker 2: when they lost Milton Williams and then and not only that,
- 39:52Speaker 2: like they've they haven't had Kiros Tonga for parts of
- 39:54Speaker 2: this stretch. They haven't had Roberts Blaine for parts of
- 39:57Speaker 2: the stretch. They have Jelani to fe for parts of
- 39:59Speaker 2: the stresses. Player, this is.
- 40:00Speaker 3: The spine of your defense.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Listen, and this is where I, as I said kind
- 40:04Speaker 2: of when we open the show, I don't think that
- 40:08Speaker 2: there's no personnel concerns from this game. But it's not
- 40:11Speaker 2: like past years. It was just like, well the roster sucks. Yeah,
- 40:13Speaker 2: they we knew it going into the season. Like they
- 40:15Speaker 2: did a great job of overhauling the top twenty two,
- 40:19Speaker 2: you know, the starters on both sides of the ball.
- 40:20Speaker 2: They did a great job upgrading those spots. The depth
- 40:23Speaker 2: still isn't quite where it needed to be. And you know,
- 40:26Speaker 2: Tonga looked like maybe an answer there his first game
- 40:29Speaker 2: back from an injury. I didn't think he had one
- 40:31Speaker 2: of his better games. I don't know what was going
- 40:33Speaker 2: on with him. I just I figure he's probably still hurt.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I don't because I didn't look at it like he
- 40:41Speaker 3: was physically getting moved. He kept on trying to like
- 40:45Speaker 3: backdoor their zone runs, so like they were you know
- 40:49Speaker 3: when you run zone, like the brokers are going to
- 40:51Speaker 3: reach on the line of scrimmage, flowing you know, horizontally
- 40:54Speaker 3: to the line of scrimmage. And he just kept on
- 40:56Speaker 3: like trying to swim and shoot gaps into the backfield
- 41:00Speaker 3: on the back door, you know, the backside A or
- 41:01Speaker 3: the backside B gap, and like nobody was replacing him
- 41:05Speaker 3: in the gap, right, So he was swimming and he
- 41:07Speaker 3: was jumping in, trying to jump into the backfield, and
- 41:10Speaker 3: there was no fill from the second level or something
- 41:13Speaker 3: or anywhere really to try to replace him, And so
- 41:16Speaker 3: all James Cook was doing was aiming that run outside
- 41:19Speaker 3: and then just cutting it back right through the middle
- 41:20Speaker 3: because Tongo was just vacating the middle of the field.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Like I didn't feel like it was like that Tongo
- 41:25Speaker 3: was getting like manhandled in there. I felt like there
- 41:27Speaker 3: was like what we're like, what are we fitting here?
- 41:29Speaker 3: Like what's what's the call and what's what's the plan
- 41:33Speaker 3: of how we're trying to fit the run here? And
- 41:35Speaker 3: I'll admit, like you can't it's really hard to watch
- 41:38Speaker 3: film and without knowing what the call is defensively to
- 41:43Speaker 3: tell you like what exactly the fit was like and
- 41:45Speaker 3: what who's where everybody was supposed to go? But all
- 41:49Speaker 3: I can tell you is that there was nobody in
- 41:50Speaker 3: the a gap right right and that is obviously not
- 41:53Speaker 3: how you draw it up. So they were like loading
- 41:56Speaker 3: the front a little bit to the play side of
- 41:59Speaker 3: the form and trying they were trying to force the cutbacks,
- 42:02Speaker 3: like they wanted him to cut back, but there was
- 42:05Speaker 3: just nobody there for him. You know when he did
- 42:08Speaker 3: cut back, there just wasn't anybody there, So it was
- 42:10Speaker 3: more and we'll get to this, like I said, but
- 42:13Speaker 3: this was more to me. This was more like you know,
- 42:16Speaker 3: details like this was like not necessarily that I thought
- 42:19Speaker 3: that they were just getting blown off the ball. It
- 42:22Speaker 3: just felt like they were kind of beating themselves a
- 42:23Speaker 3: lot in the run game. So I want to put
- 42:25Speaker 3: that on the back burner because we'll get to it.
- 42:27Speaker 2: The last thing I had on the back bry just
- 42:29Speaker 2: to finish that thought like that that the run game.
- 42:31Speaker 2: To me, I do think the issues are more personnel
- 42:35Speaker 2: than schematic. Again, it's not to say that they're in
- 42:37Speaker 2: some things they can do better, like you just highlighted,
- 42:39Speaker 2: but yeah, Spallain or mill Williams and Robert explaining like
- 42:42Speaker 2: don't forget that part of it too. Getting those guys
- 42:45Speaker 2: back should be a big help. It's just you know,
- 42:47Speaker 2: they're not getting mill Williams back for this game. He's
- 42:49Speaker 2: still not eligible to come off. I are for at
- 42:51Speaker 2: least another week and then we'll see about Splain.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Right, And I think that two things can be true
- 42:55Speaker 3: at the same time, Like they're not going to be
- 42:57Speaker 3: a dominant run defense. Without all their guys health. But
- 43:00Speaker 3: it doesn't got to be it doesn't have to be
- 43:02Speaker 3: bottom of the league, right either.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it shouldn't be this bad, but it's I think
- 43:06Speaker 2: there is an element, there's like a reverse ewing theory
- 43:11Speaker 2: element here where like, it doesn't need to be this bad,
- 43:13Speaker 2: but because mill Williams was such an important player, as
- 43:16Speaker 2: they try to reinvent it, because they have to kind
- 43:18Speaker 2: of reinvent it without them, you go through growing pains
- 43:20Speaker 2: of trial and error and experimenting with different things. You know.
- 43:23Speaker 2: I think if they had time, eventually they would water
- 43:27Speaker 2: would find its level and they'd figure it out. But
- 43:29Speaker 2: at that point, you'd rather just get in the Lewis
- 43:31Speaker 2: back sooner at that point than go through all that.
- 43:33Speaker 3: Okay, last thing in the bads and then we got
- 43:35Speaker 3: to get to the stuff they get to be, which
- 43:37Speaker 3: is probably gonna be a few minutes of breakdown here.
- 43:40Speaker 3: But just the four man pass rush, yeah, they just
- 43:44Speaker 3: they don't get home with four against good offensive lines
- 43:47Speaker 3: like Buffalo twenty one percent pressure rate on their four
- 43:50Speaker 3: man rushes, which you know they use about almost sixty
- 43:53Speaker 3: percent of the time as most teams do, so they
- 43:56Speaker 3: need a lot more from Chase On and Landry. Then
- 43:59Speaker 3: they got in this game, you know, they know a
- 44:01Speaker 3: lot more. Now, was there an element of you know,
- 44:05Speaker 3: rush lane integrity and not getting past Josh Allen and
- 44:09Speaker 3: having to kind of contain him in the pocket from
- 44:12Speaker 3: the edges. I think that's absolutely fair to say that
- 44:16Speaker 3: there was some element of that. But at the end
- 44:18Speaker 3: of the day, you can't just let him sit there
- 44:20Speaker 3: and throw the ball right. You have to get some
- 44:22Speaker 3: pressure on him, and you have to be able to
- 44:25Speaker 3: get some pressure without blitzing too on occasion, and they
- 44:28Speaker 3: just didn't have it in this game. You know, Landry
- 44:30Speaker 3: had the sack in the first half, that was his
- 44:33Speaker 3: only pressure in the entire game, and then Chason had
- 44:36Speaker 3: one hurry in this game and that was it. They
- 44:38Speaker 3: had two pressures combined out of their starting edge guys. Like,
- 44:41Speaker 3: that's just not going to cut it. And with Christian
- 44:44Speaker 3: Barmore in the inside getting double teams and triple teams
- 44:46Speaker 3: all the time, like, there's where's it going to come from?
- 44:49Speaker 3: You know, it's just not going to come from anywhere
- 44:51Speaker 3: at that point. So they just need more from both
- 44:53Speaker 3: those guys. And I don't know if that means with
- 44:56Speaker 3: Landry into particular. I don't know if that means rotating
- 44:59Speaker 3: him a little bit more with Ponder Jenning is to
- 45:01Speaker 3: try to keep them fresh. I don't know what the
- 45:04Speaker 3: response or the answer is there, but they just need
- 45:07Speaker 3: more four man pass rush. They can't blitz all the time,
- 45:10Speaker 3: so you have to find a way to get some
- 45:12Speaker 3: pressure with four.
- 45:13Speaker 2: It's funny I before the game, I was kind of
- 45:15Speaker 2: getting started. We we've obviously it's been great. We haven't
- 45:18Speaker 2: really done draft talk this year because we haven't had to,
- 45:20Speaker 2: but I'm still gonna have up tomorrow my like players
- 45:23Speaker 2: to watch in the college football playoff thing for Patriots fans. Yeah,
- 45:26Speaker 2: And I put the list together a Thursday Friday last
- 45:28Speaker 2: week whenever it was and I was like, there's a
- 45:30Speaker 2: lot of edge rushers on here. My two edge rusher
- 45:32Speaker 2: had out. I think it's on the n I saw
- 45:34Speaker 2: that game and I put I added another edge rusher
- 45:37Speaker 2: to the list. I was between an edge rusher and
- 45:39Speaker 2: wide receiver from one team, and I was like, Nope,
- 45:41Speaker 2: we're gonna add more edge rushers to this. Like it's
- 45:43Speaker 2: a great edge class. We're gonna talk. There's a lot
- 45:45Speaker 2: of names we're gonna get familiar with people already probably
- 45:47Speaker 2: familiar with some cash as Hall, Dave Bailey, Romelo Height. Like,
- 45:52Speaker 2: we're gonna get ready for a lot of edge rusher.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Talk to Spring by the way, you'll have your time
- 45:57Speaker 2: to talk about your edge. Well, I'm gonna add this
- 45:59Speaker 2: real quick. I texted you this morning, but I'm just
- 46:00Speaker 2: gonna put it out there now. The top edge guy
- 46:03Speaker 2: in the class who the Patriots probably have a shot
- 46:06Speaker 2: at Rumbain. Yeah, there are questions about his arm length,
- 46:08Speaker 2: about his arm light. Here we go, so we get
- 46:10Speaker 2: to do that whole thing. Well, they're not going to
- 46:13Speaker 2: be picking that well unless.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Is falls because of his arms, and then we do
- 46:17Speaker 3: have to be a pretty big fall. But yeah, they
- 46:21Speaker 3: to me, and I know we're going to probably talk
- 46:23Speaker 3: a little bit about receivers and playmakers on offense, which
- 46:27Speaker 3: is absolutely in neat as well. I think they could
- 46:30Speaker 3: still use that top guys too, But I think edge
- 46:33Speaker 3: rusher right now is the number one night.
- 46:35Speaker 2: And oddly enough, because again, as I was going through this,
- 46:37Speaker 2: I'm like, all right, which guy do I take from
- 46:38Speaker 2: each team? There's a lot of teams with a really
- 46:40Speaker 2: good receiver and a really good edge rusher. We're going
- 46:42Speaker 2: to be talking about a total of like ten schools.
- 46:44Speaker 3: Yeah, this whole.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Spring, because all the players that that are fits are
- 46:47Speaker 2: on the same teams.
- 46:47Speaker 3: All right, let's go over to the stuff togainst you
- 46:49Speaker 3: beat and you'll have your special teams minute here in
- 46:53Speaker 3: a second.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Well, I'm just glad it's in this category.
- 46:55Speaker 3: So the first thing that I have here, let's stick
- 46:58Speaker 3: on the defense, because we were talking by the defense,
- 47:00Speaker 3: and we'll get back to the offense. So in the
- 47:03Speaker 3: Patriots meeting room, they have a sign that has the
- 47:07Speaker 3: team identity and these are basically just like non negotiables
- 47:11Speaker 3: for Mike Rable. Number one is effort in finish. Yeah right,
- 47:14Speaker 3: That's that's like kind of his mantra. That's his thing.
- 47:17Speaker 3: That's one of his sayings. Effort and finish is number one.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Do you remember against Tampa Bay Tony Romo said that
- 47:24Speaker 3: the Patriots were DTF and everybody made a big deal
- 47:27Speaker 3: about it on the broadcast because of what the other
- 47:29Speaker 3: meeting of DTF is. Well, they have their own meeting
- 47:32Speaker 3: of DTF. And my guess is that this is either
- 47:35Speaker 3: just football lingo across the league that you hear a lot,
- 47:38Speaker 3: or Mike Rabel said it to Tony Romo in a
- 47:40Speaker 3: production meeting, But the Patriots version of DTF is details, technique, fundamentals, right,
- 47:47Speaker 3: those three things. And I just thought defensively in this
- 47:50Speaker 3: game they were not DTF at all. Like their pass
- 47:55Speaker 3: rush was kind of a jumbled mess. Their run fits
- 47:57Speaker 3: were kind of a jumbled mess. I thought coverage at
- 48:00Speaker 3: times they were busting coverages at different times in this game. Uh,
- 48:04Speaker 3: maybe a little bit more.
- 48:05Speaker 6: You know.
- 48:05Speaker 3: The one the plays that stood out to me that
- 48:07Speaker 3: really bugged me the third and seven backed up they
- 48:11Speaker 3: have Buffalo backed up. It's third and seven from the
- 48:14Speaker 3: Buffalo twelve. They I don't know what they were doing
- 48:17Speaker 3: up front. They like had guys running into each other upfront,
- 48:21Speaker 3: Like we talk about that a lot with like routes
- 48:23Speaker 3: spacing on offense. This was that equivalent but on defense
- 48:26Speaker 3: where they'd literally have dudes running into each other in
- 48:29Speaker 3: the pass rush and picking each other. And in the
- 48:32Speaker 3: back end, Uh, they someone didn't carry or someone didn't
- 48:35Speaker 3: pass off or something in zone and h Dalton Kincaid
- 48:38Speaker 3: is just wide open in the middle of the field.
- 48:42Speaker 3: The coordination of the defense in this game was poor.
- 48:47Speaker 3: They did not tackle. Well, they had ten miss tackles
- 48:49Speaker 3: in this game as well, But overall, I you know,
- 48:53Speaker 3: we were talking just about this with the personnel versus
- 48:55Speaker 3: the scheme. If you play a good offense like Buffalo
- 48:59Speaker 3: and you're not sharp on the details and the techniques
- 49:03Speaker 3: and the fundamentals, you were going to give up thirty
- 49:05Speaker 3: five points. Like That's just the way that this goes
- 49:08Speaker 3: in this league. When you play a good quarterback, you
- 49:11Speaker 3: can't make mistakes like that. You just can't. And that's
- 49:13Speaker 3: exactly what Mike Rabel said on Monday. So this is
- 49:17Speaker 3: just one of those things where, yeah, you were shorthanded defensively,
- 49:21Speaker 3: you don't have Splin, you don't have Milton Williams. But
- 49:24Speaker 3: if you were a DTF, I think that you don't
- 49:26Speaker 3: give up five straight touchdown drives and lose the game.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Right, Yeah? No, I mean they got sloppy, and we
- 49:32Speaker 2: talked last week about how the Bills were sloppy, and
- 49:34Speaker 2: you know, the Patriots, you know, you didn't count on
- 49:37Speaker 2: them playing a clean game. I don't think the Bills
- 49:38Speaker 2: played a perfectly clean game either, but the Patriots were
- 49:42Speaker 2: the sloppier team.
- 49:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yep, absolutely, So then the other things you know,
- 49:46Speaker 3: going to the offense. I do think that it's fair
- 49:50Speaker 3: to second guess the second half play calling, but not
- 49:53Speaker 3: necessarily just because they didn't run the ball enough. I
- 49:55Speaker 3: think that's part of it. But you know, they're getting
- 49:59Speaker 3: all these too high state safety structures from Buffalo. Eighty
- 50:02Speaker 3: six percent of the time, the Bill has played two
- 50:04Speaker 3: high safeties in the second half, and we all talk
- 50:08Speaker 3: about it when you know they're playing well. Drake May
- 50:11Speaker 3: is the best deep ball thrower in the NFL. So
- 50:14Speaker 3: the Bills said, you're not thrown deep. If you're gonna
- 50:17Speaker 3: beat us, it's gonna be by taking profits. It's gonna
- 50:19Speaker 3: be by driving the ball. You're gonna have to go
- 50:21Speaker 3: on ten twelve play drives. They kind of just said
- 50:24Speaker 3: enough is enough on the big plays. Now most of
- 50:26Speaker 3: the big players are on the ground in this game.
- 50:27Speaker 3: But regardless, they said, we're not giving up, you know,
- 50:31Speaker 3: one play sixty five yard touchdown drives anymore. We're gonna
- 50:34Speaker 3: make you march it in the fourth quarter. We're gonna
- 50:37Speaker 3: play two high safeties, we're gonna play man to man
- 50:40Speaker 3: underneath it, and you're gonna have to find ways to
- 50:43Speaker 3: beat us. And it was just disappointing that Josh McDaniels
- 50:46Speaker 3: did not have any sort of beater ready, right, Like,
- 50:50Speaker 3: you have to there's got to be something that you
- 50:52Speaker 3: can do against two man to get somebody open, you know,
- 50:55Speaker 3: and I know it's it's a difficult coverage because the
- 50:58Speaker 3: guys are sitting inside levery and this team and this
- 51:01Speaker 3: offense wants to throw the ball breaking into the middle
- 51:04Speaker 3: of the field. And that's exactly what Buffalo took away
- 51:08Speaker 3: in this game. They took away the deep ball, and
- 51:09Speaker 3: they took away the middle of the field, which is
- 51:11Speaker 3: where the Patriots live as an offense. So they're trying
- 51:14Speaker 3: to make you play left handed, and they deserve credit
- 51:16Speaker 3: for doing that. But at the same time, your offensive
- 51:20Speaker 3: coordinator needs to at some point like you have to
- 51:22Speaker 3: have something right. And I also would say we talked
- 51:26Speaker 3: about this going into the game, that this is what
- 51:28Speaker 3: Buffalo was going to do. Now, it took them a
- 51:30Speaker 3: half to figure it out, but I knew going into
- 51:33Speaker 3: the game they were going to play cover two. I
- 51:34Speaker 3: knew it because that's what they did in the first
- 51:36Speaker 3: half in Week five that gave the Patriots trouble. In
- 51:39Speaker 3: Week five second half, they come out, they start blitzing
- 51:42Speaker 3: and doing all this ridiculous stuff, and Drake May tore
- 51:44Speaker 3: them apart. That's what the first half looked like this time,
- 51:47Speaker 3: and the second half looked like the first half in
- 51:49Speaker 3: Week five. So I do I hold Josh m McDaniels
- 51:53Speaker 3: accountable because he's really good at his job and he's
- 51:56Speaker 3: the veteran OC, and I think that they should have
- 51:59Speaker 3: been able to find a way to scheme some stuff
- 52:01Speaker 3: open in the passing game, even if it was just
- 52:04Speaker 3: to get Drake May into a rhythm and then maybe
- 52:07Speaker 3: he makes some plays. But once you're asking him, you know,
- 52:10Speaker 3: I'm not trying to absolve him. We're gonna get the Drake.
- 52:12Speaker 3: But once you ask him in the fourth quarter, you know,
- 52:14Speaker 3: there's two thirty left and you have to drive the field.
- 52:17Speaker 3: Like he's already out of whack at that point, right,
- 52:20Speaker 3: and so like at some point you have to get
- 52:22Speaker 3: him some easy completions. You had to get him a
- 52:24Speaker 3: rhythm and then maybe he could have pulled out that
- 52:26Speaker 3: two minute drive to win the football game. So I
- 52:29Speaker 3: think both of them kind of sharing it equally. You know,
- 52:31Speaker 3: he didn't play well. McDaniels didn't call it particularly well.
- 52:35Speaker 3: And they lost.
- 52:36Speaker 2: What's the opposite of complimentary, not like complimentary, like.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Like complimentary football, Yeah, I mean non complimentary.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I don't try I'm trying to think if there's an exact,
- 52:48Speaker 2: incomparable or contrasting. Okay, so it was contrasting football because
- 52:53Speaker 2: I mean there's some truth to it all you say,
- 52:55Speaker 2: to everything you said. But again, it's also it's hard
- 52:57Speaker 2: to get into that rhythm and develop when you can't
- 53:00Speaker 2: stay on the field and when the defense can't get
- 53:02Speaker 2: you the ball back and this and that. So yeah,
- 53:05Speaker 2: it's a little bit on everybody. I just when I
- 53:06Speaker 2: look at the play calling, get eighteen plays to work with. Yeah,
- 53:10Speaker 2: there's only so much you can do in eighteen plays.
- 53:12Speaker 2: It's just the reality of it, right, which.
- 53:14Speaker 3: Is why it's important to establish get a few.
- 53:17Speaker 2: First downs, establish some Drake said that after the game
- 53:20Speaker 2: when he was asked what went wrong in the second half,
- 53:22Speaker 2: So we couldn't get the first first down?
- 53:24Speaker 3: Yeah, right, So that's a big thing to me. I
- 53:27Speaker 3: think that that first first down is a big emphasis
- 53:30Speaker 3: for Josh McDaniels as well, in terms of drive starters
- 53:33Speaker 3: and things like that. That's always big with him, Like
- 53:35Speaker 3: we got to get the first first down in the
- 53:37Speaker 3: drive and get the drive moving, and they weren't able
- 53:39Speaker 3: to do that in this game. Then there's the whole
- 53:42Speaker 3: conversation about Drake May in the second half of this game.
- 53:46Speaker 3: He was not good. I mean, there's really just no
- 53:48Speaker 3: other way to put it. You know, five minus plays
- 53:50Speaker 3: for me in this second half. I only had him
- 53:52Speaker 3: with one plus play. He had the turnover worthy play
- 53:55Speaker 3: on the spray to Henry that hit Jordan Poyer right
- 53:58Speaker 3: in the face. It should have been an interesting He
- 54:01Speaker 3: was not good. I didn't think that he was very
- 54:03Speaker 3: decisive or saw the field well. He wasn't, you know.
- 54:07Speaker 3: Vrabel said this on Monday and kind of back it up.
- 54:11Speaker 3: He wasn't. His first reads were covered a lot in
- 54:13Speaker 3: the first half and the second half, excuse me, his
- 54:16Speaker 3: first reads and the progressions were covered a lot, and
- 54:18Speaker 3: he wasn't progressing quickly enough off the first read like
- 54:22Speaker 3: if it's covered, move on right like that was what
- 54:24Speaker 3: Rabel's message kind of was, and he didn't do that
- 54:27Speaker 3: very well in this half of football. You know, the
- 54:30Speaker 3: throw to Hunter Henry on third down. I know a
- 54:32Speaker 3: lot of people are going to call it a drop.
- 54:33Speaker 3: I didn't think it was a good ball. You know,
- 54:35Speaker 3: it's behind him and makes Hunter Henry make like a
- 54:38Speaker 3: twisting kind of catch attempt at it. If that's out
- 54:41Speaker 3: in front of Hunter Henry where it should be, it's
- 54:43Speaker 3: a first down, you know. So they just didn't play well.
- 54:45Speaker 3: And I don't need to drag him for it. We
- 54:48Speaker 3: don't need to kill him for it. But if you're
- 54:50Speaker 3: being objective, it was not a good half of football
- 54:53Speaker 3: for him, and you know, you expect better and he
- 54:56Speaker 3: can definitely play better, you know, you see that. So
- 54:59Speaker 3: putting these two together of you know, the lack of
- 55:01Speaker 3: answers that they had schematically for what Buffalo is doing
- 55:05Speaker 3: and Drake may struggling in this game, I just wonder,
- 55:08Speaker 3: you know, if they see this again and whether we
- 55:11Speaker 3: can kind of get into whether it's a blueprint not
- 55:13Speaker 3: a blueprint whatever. You know, if they see this from Baltimore,
- 55:16Speaker 3: if they see this in the playoffs, you know, what
- 55:18Speaker 3: do they kind of go to to have better answers
- 55:22Speaker 3: the second time around? I think will be important.
- 55:25Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean some of it's just the accuracy, right,
- 55:27Speaker 2: like the sprays came back, and you know, when you
- 55:31Speaker 2: don't have answers, you start getting sped up, and that's
- 55:33Speaker 2: where some of those those accuracy issues come from. But
- 55:36Speaker 2: they've seen it now, right for all to talk about, Okay,
- 55:39Speaker 2: this is the blue Is this the blueprint for Drake
- 55:41Speaker 2: May And we've said a lot this year, Okay, that
- 55:43Speaker 2: might be the blueprint. And he comes out the next
- 55:44Speaker 2: week in shreds and so we'll see expect the Ravens
- 55:47Speaker 2: to do a lot of what the Bills did. But
- 55:49Speaker 2: you've seen it now, right, So now they can start
- 55:51Speaker 2: trying to put together some answers. They have a whole
- 55:52Speaker 2: week to start putting together some answers.
- 55:54Speaker 3: It was very weird to see him struggle so much
- 55:56Speaker 3: with two high safeties because he's shredded two high safeties
- 55:58Speaker 3: all season long, and this game he just didn't see
- 56:01Speaker 3: it well, just wasn't seeing the field well, wasn't seeing
- 56:04Speaker 3: the rotations and stuff like that well. And then throw
- 56:07Speaker 3: it particularly well either. So not a great half of
- 56:09Speaker 3: the quarterback. All right, last thing here and then we
- 56:12Speaker 3: can stop being so doom and gloom about this. The
- 56:16Speaker 3: kickoff coverage, man, I mean fifty eight forty five and
- 56:19Speaker 3: then thirty eight plus the fifteen yard penalty makesed that
- 56:22Speaker 3: a fifty three yard net return as well change the game,
- 56:27Speaker 3: Ray Davis, and the kickoff return changed the entire game.
- 56:30Speaker 3: You know, they get two big kickoff returns in a
- 56:33Speaker 3: row that sets up two short fields, two touchdown drives
- 56:37Speaker 3: for Buffalo to get back in the football game. This
- 56:40Speaker 3: was one of those times. And this is often the
- 56:42Speaker 3: case with special teams, kind of like offensive line. Usually
- 56:45Speaker 3: only talk about it if it's really good or really bad.
- 56:48Speaker 3: This is one of the times we're talking about it
- 56:49Speaker 3: because it was really bad.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and again you go back to the big gear,
- 56:53Speaker 2: you go back to Thursday and Jeremy Springer talked about
- 56:59Speaker 2: how they were going to be a threat. And after
- 57:01Speaker 2: I think the third return and the offense, the Patriot's
- 57:05Speaker 2: still somewhat in control the game at this point. But
- 57:07Speaker 2: after the third return, I turned to Matt Dollf I said,
- 57:09Speaker 2: this is exactly what happened when the Bills played the
- 57:12Speaker 2: Buccaneers a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, was the Buccaneers
- 57:15Speaker 2: had control that game early on, but the Bills broke
- 57:18Speaker 2: a couple of not like highlight tape returns, But they're
- 57:21Speaker 2: getting right around midfield and now the offense has a
- 57:23Speaker 2: short field and they're able to start getting in a rhythm.
- 57:26Speaker 2: And you know I've said this, some people said, well,
- 57:28Speaker 2: you know, this first couple of kick returns, the Patriots
- 57:30Speaker 2: are still in control the game. But the Bills offense
- 57:32Speaker 2: started getting their legs under them. And then when they
- 57:34Speaker 2: had to drive longer down the field later on, they'd
- 57:37Speaker 2: already kind of been able to figure out some things
- 57:39Speaker 2: that work when they'd worked on those shorter fields. So
- 57:42Speaker 2: you just can't have it. Goes back to what we
- 57:44Speaker 2: talked about turning the trade ubline about the Patriots acquirming
- 57:46Speaker 2: and kick return. Now, I Thinkyle Wims been good in
- 57:48Speaker 2: that role, should have had a big return, got wiped
- 57:49Speaker 2: out by a penalty. I do want to add one
- 57:51Speaker 2: more that reminds me to the things that get you beat.
- 57:54Speaker 3: But yeah, I knew.
- 57:56Speaker 2: I say, yeah, you can't have it. You just can't
- 57:59Speaker 2: have it. Can't be giving over their first five drives.
- 58:03Speaker 2: So this is through the opening kickoff of the second half,
- 58:05Speaker 2: the Bill's average starting field position was the Patriots forty
- 58:08Speaker 2: two yard line when you take out the one that
- 58:10Speaker 2: came off a punt, So the first four kickoffs for
- 58:13Speaker 2: the Patriots, the Bill's average starting field position was the
- 58:16Speaker 2: forty nine yard line. Yeah, you can't win that way.
- 58:18Speaker 2: You can make a good offense, you cannot win only
- 58:21Speaker 2: giving a team half the field.
- 58:22Speaker 3: Yeah, so it was a huge part of the game.
- 58:25Speaker 3: Vrabel really stressed it Sunday and Monday, saying we can't
- 58:29Speaker 3: leave out the field position that day. You know, we
- 58:31Speaker 3: were putting the defense in some tough spots, especially against
- 58:33Speaker 3: you know, the raigning MVP. Those are some tough spots
- 58:37Speaker 3: to be in. That's not to absolve the defense, but
- 58:39Speaker 3: all of this goes hand in hand. And you know,
- 58:40Speaker 3: when we'd unpack this loss, this was all three phases
- 58:44Speaker 3: in the second half of this game that came apart.
- 58:46Speaker 3: You know, like, this isn't just Drake May. I've seen
- 58:48Speaker 3: a lot of that that this loss is on Drake May.
- 58:51Speaker 3: I think that's bullshit. Honestly, I think that that's frankly bs.
- 58:55Speaker 3: And a big reason why is because of all the
- 58:58Speaker 3: things that we've just talked about about the other two
- 59:00Speaker 3: phases of the game, Like the defense gave of five
- 59:03Speaker 3: straight touchdown drives, the kickoff coverage was not good, Like
- 59:07Speaker 3: you can't just take those things out and say, well,
- 59:09Speaker 3: you know, the quarterback should just save everybody all the time,
- 59:12Speaker 3: like that's not fair to hit.
- 59:13Speaker 2: It was again, it was everything. It was. It was offense, defense,
- 59:15Speaker 2: special teams. It was a lotdown in all three phases.
- 59:17Speaker 3: So you really have to put into all of it.
- 59:20Speaker 3: I thought, you know, just we got a break, but
- 59:22Speaker 3: the kickoff coverage just really quickly they got schemed up
- 59:26Speaker 3: in the kickoff coverage. Now I'm not a kickoff coverage savant.
- 59:29Speaker 3: I don't know enough about it to tell you. I
- 59:32Speaker 3: don't know if they got schemed up because the Bills
- 59:36Speaker 3: saw something in the Patriots kickoff coverage and how they
- 59:40Speaker 3: cover kicks, or if the Bills just have these kind
- 59:43Speaker 3: of neat little wrinkles in their scheme and and the
- 59:47Speaker 3: Patriots just weren't totally prepared for it. Either way, it's
- 59:50Speaker 3: not good. But if it's something that the Bill saw
- 59:53Speaker 3: on tape that they could expose with the Patriots, I'd
- 59:55Speaker 3: say that's probably worse because now you're gonna go up
- 59:58Speaker 3: against Baltimore and John Hart, a former special teams coordinator,
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: He's going to see the same things on the film, right,
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: He's gonna be able to design it up. So the
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: first big kickoff return they had, they basically ran power.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: They had pulled a guy from the other side of
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: the field in front, like as a lead blocker, and
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: created a crease. The second one, they put an offensive
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: lineman at in the middle of the field, which is
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: not usually you don't see offensive linemen on the field
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: on kickoff return. So you see an offensive lineman there
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: in the middle of the field, you know, he just
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: opens a hole for Davis. A third one was kind
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: of more just like straight kickoff, like normal kickoff return.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: But it was really just all three times they kind
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: of got schemed up, and I think that was a
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: little bit worrisome as well. So can't have it, Like
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: you said, you can't special teams is just like offensive
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: line to me, you can't have wild swings either way. Right,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: You just want the special teams to not get you beat.
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: It doesn't necessarily need to win you the game, but
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: it can't get you beat either. In this game, it
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: was definitely part of the things that got you beat.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: All right, let's take a hang on. Okay, I want
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: to add one more thing though, go ahead.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: It's seven penalties, yes, five month third or fourth down
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: two on kickoffs.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: I'm not rolling my eyes because I disagree that it
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: wasn't a factor in this game because it was. I'm
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: rolling my eyes because those penalties were so borderline penalties.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: I think the more egregious was the non calls compared
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: to the calls.
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: The call on Carlton Davis is bad.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: So here's the thing with Carlon Davis went to make
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: I've seen that called before and and it's a TICKI
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: tak call. I would rather they not call it. I've
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: seen it called. The bigger issue and this goes back
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: to something I've talked about all year. There's poorly officiated
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: games and there's unfairly officiated games. Different things. So a
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: a all unfairly officiated game are poorly officiated. A game
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: could be poorly officiated without being unfairly officiated. I said,
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: because I know the Bills fans are all hot and
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: bothered on this, I said Week five was a poorly
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: officiated game. It didn't impact the outcome, neither did it here.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: But there's a certain operational level I think it's fair
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: to expect from officials in the National Football League. As
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Carlton Davis said, it should not take you ten seconds
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: to get the flag out right. It's like in baseball,
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: when an umpire.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: Does you know it when you see it, it's either
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: it's either a penalty or it's not a penalty. And
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: if you have to sit there and think about it,
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: then it's probably not a penalty.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: You shouldn't right, if you have to reconsider it, don't
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: call it. That's just that should be the instruction point.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: It was not as delayed, but it was kind of
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: like in New Orleans.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Finished his celebration in New Orleans.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Yeah, when they scored that touchdown and then they like
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: had the extra point team on the field and they
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: called it. They called a penalty for a pass interference,
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: like out of nowhere. Look, the reason why I didn't
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: have it is because I feel like it was a
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: bit a poorly officiated game. And so I have a
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: tough time sitting here today and saying you got you know,
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: you were sloppy and he had too many penalties called
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: on you, because I just didn't really think the game
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: was very well.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Efficient to the two penalties on the kickoff were there? Definitely,
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: the face mask on score yeah. The faalse start and
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: hold were there, yep, And those are very costly penalties.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, but the hold on The kickoff too by
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: Mapu is tough because all he's got to do is
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: let go, like right, Like all you gotta do is
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: as you know, so Kyle Williams reversus field, which is tough. Right.
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: You don't know your back is to him, so you
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: don't know that he's reversing field. But all you got
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: to do when you feel the guy trying to go
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: outside of you is just is just let go and
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: then it's not holding.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: The two that I questioned the most were the Marcus
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Jones went, I don't know what the hell happened there
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: between the catch non catch and whether or not it
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: was a penalty like that. That thing was a mess. Yeah,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: and the non call on the ball the hole Hollins
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: with Tray White, which happened to be similar plays, right,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: because you know, my thing with the officials like be consistent.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: I had as much of an issue with the Hollands
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: one as I did with the Davis one. So the
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: Hollins ones, it's a it's a heave, it's an arm punt.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: So here's my issue with the Hollands one. You know,
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: people might look at that and say, well it wasn't catchable.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: They have not really cared this year. Really going back
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: to last year. It wasn't that it wasn't catchable, It
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: just what was the one to what was the Mark
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Jones one?
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: I couldn't explain. There was an arm punt, So this
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: was that wasn't an arm punk? Yeah it was, No,
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: it wasn't. There was. There was a fourth down play
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: and like they.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Don't do the Josh Allen thing, that was as much
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: an arm point.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: No, not even close. Yes, what do you mean? They
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: took the safety out of the middle of the field
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: and it was the read of where he's supposed to
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: go with the ball.
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: It's fourth and three and he hums went down the
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: field to a covered player.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: I that was not an arm punt.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Those two you either call both of those or you
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: call neither of those, and I'd be.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: Throwing either a fifty plus yard bomb down the right side.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Well, it was a little more of an arm punt
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: than the other. But that was that was the catch.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Was not an arm that that was that was an effort.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: Let's see what happens he from Josh Allen. That was.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Let's not act like that was some unbelievable other worldly play.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: It's not what that was.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: I didn't say that. I just said that that was
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: that was the play.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: It's fourth down. There's nothing here. I'm gonna throw this
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: up in hunting.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: I don't think that that was nothing there.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: There was nothing there, no here. Jones is right there.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: I'm trying to explain to you what happened. Okay, the
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: safety's in the middle of the field. It was Jalen Hawkins.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: They run mesh right, the wheel comes out of the
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: backfield from the running back. Jalen Hawkins takes the running
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: back out of the backfield, so it's basically cover zero. Okay,
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: there's nobody in the part of the field, so he's
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: one on one down the field with Shakiir and Marcus Jones.
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: That's the only place there was to go with the ball.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Okay, it's josh Allen. Yeah, couldn't run around scramble whatever
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: he threw to covered receiver down the field.
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: I don't even think he threw to a cover receiver.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: To be honest with you, I think Marcus Jones did
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: a really good job of driving the catch point. But
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: I don't think he was like he was not like
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: wide open by any means. But Marcus Jones got beat
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: off the line of scrimmage on the play.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: Like I'm I don't know. Those two plays should have
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: been called the same way. To me, there are very
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: similar plays. They should have been called the same way.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: I'd be fine if they threw a flag on neither. Personally,
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: That's how I'd rather they do it. I think that
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: the Jones was sticky tack. It also definitely wasn't caught.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: But whatever. But again, the officiating didn't ultimately impact the
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: outcome of the game. To me, you plow a twenty
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: one point lead, it's a lot more in officiating, but
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: between the conferences, the long conferences, and they couldn't figure
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: out the clock at the end of the first half,
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: and they weren't all plays consistently, and they're throwing the
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: flags late, like, it just was not John Hussey, John
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Hussey has.
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: Been a leaf twenty four years. It wasn't a good
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: It was officiating. It was not all right. Let's take

- 1:09:49Speaker 11: Hey, guys, good morning. Before I forget, I'm sure we
- 1:09:53Speaker 11: won't chat again. So happy holidays to all of you guys.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: Thank you too, Thank you.
- 1:09:58Speaker 11: Yeah. So you know, I'm still trying to figure out
- 1:10:01Speaker 11: the Buffalo loss, and definitely I agree listening to the
- 1:10:05Speaker 11: show it was all three phases that cost us the game.
- 1:10:09Speaker 11: But if I have to put my finger on one
- 1:10:12Speaker 11: one of those three phases. I'm going to put it
- 1:10:14Speaker 11: on the offense because the defense are all banged up
- 1:10:19Speaker 11: and we can expect much more of the same next game.
- 1:10:22Speaker 11: Baltimore is going to want to run the ball and
- 1:10:24Speaker 11: we have a scrambling quarterback. But I'm going to put
- 1:10:28Speaker 11: it on the offense. Like you guys said, we're the
- 1:10:32Speaker 11: highest scoring offensive team in the first half, and in
- 1:10:36Speaker 11: the second half, things just shut down. If you take
- 1:10:38Speaker 11: away that run from Anderson in the second half, which
- 1:10:42Speaker 11: was unbelievable, and you can't count on that very often.
- 1:10:45Speaker 11: We were really scoreless in the second half.
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: I'd like to see.
- 1:10:51Speaker 11: May scramble more, uses legs more, especially in those like
- 1:10:57Speaker 11: at the last drive, third down, four down, only five
- 1:11:02Speaker 11: yards we needed. I was surprised he didn't use his
- 1:11:05Speaker 11: legs and Buffalo did go to man to man and
- 1:11:08Speaker 11: there was no separation with the receivers. So that's all
- 1:11:14Speaker 11: I have to say. I'm gonna listen to the rest
- 1:11:15Speaker 11: of the show. Thanks again, guys, and go path.
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: Thanks Tony, thanks for the call. Yeah, we talked a
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: little bit about that on PU yesterday. Alex just you
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: know it wasn't. The system wasn't working right. There wasn't.
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: The guys weren't getting schemed open. The receivers were having
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: trouble separating, you know, So could Drake may have just
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: gone playground mode and start running around and try to
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: make some plays. I think there's some truth to that. Now,
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: Buffalo did strategically spy him a couple of times on
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: third and fourth down, and they had a nice nice
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: job of doing that on a handful of plays. So
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: you know, the third down that he threw the ball
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: up the sideline to Henderson kind of into no man's land,
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: there was a spy on that play, So I didn't
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: know if he necessarily could have ran. I mean, he's fast.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: He hit twenty point whatever miles an hour running in
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: front of Trevon Henderson, So could he run away from
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: the spy. Sure he could have. But you know that's
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: what teams are gonna do. They're gonna keep him in
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: the pocket. They're gonna make him read it out, you know,
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: find the open guys like you. He had booty on
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: the backside coming across the field on the shallow on
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: that particular play, so as somebody you know, watching it,
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: It's easy for me to say with a clicker, but
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: I would have rather him come off the covered side
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: and come to the backside crosser and hit Booty coming
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: across the field and give him a chance to get
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: the first down. But I do hear the argument that
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: when there's nothing there and the plays aren't developing the
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: way you want them to develop, he has that second
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: reaction ability to just kind of start going playground mode
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: on everybody, and maybe he could have done that a
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: little bit more. Patty is an aguan. What's up, Patty?
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: Hey, Good morning, Jens.
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: Hey.
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: I just want to share the same sentiment. Happy holidays
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: to you guys. If you remember last Wednesday when I
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: called in, I said that I believe that offensive execution
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: was going to be paramount to the past win in
- 1:13:07Speaker 5: the game and to me, and like, it just brings
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: up what happened in the second half brings up a
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: much bigger problem just for this season, because I mean,
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: I know we see that like they don't have the depth,
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: you know, especially defensively. But I think the only game
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: that I could say that they probably played a good
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: sixty minute game was the Panthers game. And to me,
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: that's like the biggest it's it's the thing that's going
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: to hamstring them the most going forward and into the playoffs.
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: But I mean, I'm already, I'm listening. I'm alright with it.
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: I kind of feel like we're playing with house money.
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: I do think they're going to win the division and
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: you know, hopefully want a playoff game this year. But
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: I just think that, like when they do get to
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: the playoffs, And I said this on the postgame show,
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: you have to play sixty em in a game against
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: good teams and because if you don't, you can't expect
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: to play one half of good football and expect to win.
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: That's that's my uh, that's my little rant. And I
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: just wanted to get your guys opinion what that What
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: the hell do you think is going on with Christian Zalids.
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll take that question off here.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for the call. Bat. It just on the
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: first thing. That was sort of why I opened the
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: show the way that I opened, because I do think
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: there is an element of they might just not be
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: quite their talent wise to play sixty four minutes against
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: a good team like Buffalo. Well, and that's not to
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: let them off the hook. But it's just they might
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: be a little bit, a few pieces away from being
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: that kind of but I do think they're more talented
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: team at this point than Buffalo.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: Now the injury is hurt, but I don't know, after
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: Allen and Cook, where does Buffalo have? Line's good? The
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: line's very good. I shouldn't say the offense lines a
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: very good, but like, yeah, not a lot of talent
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: on the defense on a wide receiver, you know, it's
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: all in the running backs tight ends the line.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: Well, that's what I say. It's close, and that I
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: think that that's reassuring even though you lost the game,
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: Like you saw two teams on the field, and I
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: don't want to offend anybody in Denver, so I'll say, yeah,
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: two of the three best teams in the AFC maybe
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: played that game on Sunday, Like I think you could
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: really make.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: There's only four one of four teams gonna come out
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: of the a FC, and there may be different odds
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: for each, but it's only gonna be one of four
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: teams in my mind, to come out of the AFC.
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: And I'm just listening in the order off the top
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: of my head. Patriots, Bills, Broncos, Texans.
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: Yeah. See, I don't see it for the Texans, but
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: I agree with you all that defense. It's a really
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: good defense. But they're gonna have to go on the
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: road three straight games, and I just.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: That defense will travel.
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: Maybe maybe they get the maybe they do catch the Jaguars,
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: but it's gonna be hard.
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: But all right, let me ask you this. Are the
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Texans closer to the Patriots, Broncos, and Bills or are
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: they closer to these Steelers, Jaguars and Chargers.
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: Probably the first group, but I think the Jaguars are
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: kind of sneak.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: We'll see with the Jaguars.
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: And I'm not getting too caught up with what happened
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: on the Jets, but every single time I try to,
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: I keep on thinking the Jaguars are going to be
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: the Jaguars. They keep winning, so I have to give
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: them credit. I do give them credit.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: But they beat the Jets, they beat the Colts without
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: a quarterback, they beat the Titans, they beat the Cardinals,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: like that's their win streak right now. They do have
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: a win against the Chargers at home like they have.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: We could do the easy schedule thing with them too,
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: and Houston has beat them, I think twice this year
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: and now they split. But just to one more thing,
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: to Patty's point, like you hope this game is Mike
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Rabels said earlier this year, and I look, I think
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: it was a good quote. You'd rather learn from winning
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: than you would learn from losing. Yeah, and I think
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: that's a good approach. But I do think there's some
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: things that are just gonna be hammered home with a
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: loss more than they are with a win. And the
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: playing sixty minutes the fourth quarter all that, it's kind
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: of easy for that to go in one ear and
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: out the other if you're still winning. And so you
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: hope that this isn't. You don't want them to be
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: one of those teams, sorry, Evan, like the forty nine
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: ers that can't hold the lead in a big game.
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: Don't smur.
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: I think Kyle Shannon is the most blown fourth quarter
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: leagues in the NFL.
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: Because this is this is You've done a nice job
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: of not making this show about this, because this is
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: the crux of your frustration of this. Yeah, you are, mister,
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: don't blow big lead, don't blow le Kyle Shanahan is
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: your right.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: You so put them on that level because they did
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: it once. Yeah, and they did it in a regular
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: season game. Kyle Shanahan has done it in multiple Super
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: bowl Kyle, by the way, one more year, one more
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: year until he's out of the Marv Leavy list. By
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: the way, one more year.
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: Can we just this is not the forty nine ers show.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: But Kyle Shannan has done a hell of a job
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: with that San Francisco team this year.
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: You know what, he's a great regular season coach. You
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: know what I have to see. We both know.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: But they have been decimated by and and you know.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Credit to Mac Jones, your credit to Jones. Jones not playing,
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: Jones not played.
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: Wekay, can you finish your point? Don't blow big le
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: you hold.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: It's a wake up call. And I trust Rabel, Like
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: Rabel's a coach I trust in this situation. So okay,
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: like this is what happens when you let go of
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: the rope. Don't do it again. But it is something
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: that's now on the radar. But you know next time
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: that you know, let's say they get up big on
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: the Ravens early step on the throat and you now
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: have this in the back of your head. The team
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: has in the back of the head of all right,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: we know what it looks like when we don't finish.
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: We know what a poor effort down the stretch looks like. Uh,
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: you know, we're We're going to turn around. So I Rabel,
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: I trust for this not to be an issue because
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: I just the way he's approached other elements of the
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: game and stretches a part of this too, Like they're
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: so focused.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: On the spot. I'm just so surprised like that a
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: team coached by Rabel and Josh McDaniels fell apart the
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: way that it did.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: And that's why I don't think that's why as frustrated
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: as I was, Okay, it was very frustrating.
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: Yeah, you were in a dark place, so frustrated.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: But it's not something I'm gonna panic about because I
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: don't think that that's the DNA of what Mike Rabel's
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: program is going to be. I think they they it's
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: a young team that needed a wake up call and
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: got at a bad spot, and hopefully they treated as that.
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I agree, and that was sort of why
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: I was on the other side on right when you
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: were kind of you know, I know nothing bothers you
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: more in sports, not just football. Nothing in sports bothers
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: you more than blown blowing big leads.
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: I mean, had you Celtics got up fourteen nothing on
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: the Pistons and had you feel about that like it's frustrating.
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: It's frustrated in the.
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: First quarter of an NBA game.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: So the NBA is a little different. And I said
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: this to you that the NBA do that.
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: But do you want to bring up the Celtics against
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: the Knicks and the playoffs last year? That's it.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: We don't need to go back. But that's a more
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: fair comp to what happened in this game. Look, and
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: you just hope they learned from it and move on.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: And again, they've been so good with the clock. You
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: look at the end of the game in Tampa, right, Yeah,
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: they've been so good with the clock in managing these things.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: I trust them to get it fixed and get it
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: cleaned up. It's just unfortunate had happened in that spot,
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: specifically with was on the line against that team.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: So the other thing that Patty brought up, that this
- 1:20:05Speaker 3: thing goes up your backside. The Christian Gonzales thing is
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: starting to irk me a little bit. Because I hold
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: Christian Goanzales to a really high standard because I think
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: he's a hell of a football player. And I you know,
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: we've all loved Christian Gonzalez since the draft they drafted him,
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: and I've you know, thought he's been a great player
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: ever since. Like we know what Christian Gonzalez is capable
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: of doing. I did not think he played well in
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: this game, and it didn't show up in the box
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: score because they kept.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Dropping that first drive, he gets beat twice.
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: Yeah, he got beat twice on the first drive, both
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: one drop, one air mail by Josh Allen. Then Josh
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: Palmer dropped another pass that he got beat on. Later
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: on in the game, he busted a coverage that Allen
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: was late to the deep ball to Cooks that Jalen
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: Hawkins came over and broke up. Yeah, but that was
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: the whole defense was in cover three and Christian Gonzales
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: was in Cover two for some reason. Okay, so he
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: thought he had a safety behind him and he didn't,
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: so he let Cooks go down the sideline to nobody.
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: I just know that there's another level for Christian Gonzales
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: that he I don't think has always played to this year.
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: Ye.
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if that's the hamstring. I don't
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: know if it's the scheme. I don't know what it is.
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: But there's another level that he can get to and
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: we've seen it. And the last thing I'll just say
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: on the Christian Gonzales thing, this was one of those
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: games where the defense needed somebody to make a play.
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: You needed to stem the tide. You needed somebody to
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: step up and make a play. And on Monday, Mike
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: Rabel was asked, and I'm not trying to throw shade,
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: but Mike Rabel was asked about Christian Barmore and he
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: pivoted the question Drake May a little bit as well,
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: but he said, all of our good players and I
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: just if you're gonna hold it against Christian Barmore that
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: he's getting double and triple team because Milton Williams isn't
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: a rushing with him anymore and he's not necessarily making
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: as many impact full plays as he was before, then
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: we have to do the same thing with Christian Gonzales.
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: Like you can make a play, like you can pick
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: something off, you can break up a pass on third down. Uh,
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: you know you you can, you know, do something like
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: do anything.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: Well, I I think I don't get on Gonzalez's lack
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: of on ball production as much as some other people, because.
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: To me, the great corners have on ball production. But
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: like it's not enough to just cover your guy.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: But if you're not targeted, you're not targeted. But he
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: was targeted right now he's getting targeted. So that's where
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: I was gonna say, this game is a little different targeted.
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: Ty Law, you know kee to leave Gilmore.
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: Well, okay, but there's there's two kinds of corners. Like
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: there's been a lot of lockdowns versus ball hawks, but
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: a lot.
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: Of those, like Diana's a ballhawk, but like a lot
- 1:22:45Speaker 3: of the all the guys that I just named, Revus, Gilmour,
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: sird Tan, those guys locked their guys down too.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: They locked Reavis didn't have a ton on ball production,
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: so we threw him. But Revis, when he was thrown at,
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: you pay sure. And Gonzalez has done that at times.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: I think people get a little too like why doesn't
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: he have ten interceptions? Yeah, they're not thrown at him
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: that much. In this game he was thrown at. He
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: didn't find a way to make an impact on the ball.
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: All I'm saying is is that it takes all your
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: stars in a game like that, not you know, Drake
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: may Barmore, Gonzalez, Diggs, who I think needs you know,
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: should be held accountable for his game and his performance
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: as well. It takes all your stars in a game
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: like that. And I don't know why. It just seems
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: like because maybe he didn't actually give up the catches
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: in those spots that you know, Christian Gonzalez has kind
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: of skated a little bit. But in my opinion, you know,
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: when your defense is giving up five straight touchdown drives
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: against the reigning MVP, like you need your stars to start.
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: You need somebody to make a play, and I hold
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: all of them accountable for not making the plays. All right,
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: let's move on to Sam here in Virginia. What's up? Sam?
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:23:57Speaker 12: Covered a lot of what I wanted to talk about
- 1:24:00Speaker 12: you guys invest in the business here, But wanted to
- 1:24:02Speaker 12: ask on that fourth down play call late in the
- 1:24:05Speaker 12: fourth quarter, what'd you see on that? It kind of
- 1:24:07Speaker 12: looked like, I don't know, some poor esecution, kind of
- 1:24:10Speaker 12: a weird play call where they stacked Mac mccollins and
- 1:24:14Speaker 12: Hunter Henry and they basically just get pushed into each other.
- 1:24:17Speaker 12: It digs gets no separation and Sposa bat it down.
- 1:24:21Speaker 12: I don't know that one stuck out to me obviously
- 1:24:23Speaker 12: because of the circumstances. And one thing I wanted to
- 1:24:26Speaker 12: ask about Trick mays an accuracy. Taylor Kyle's brought up,
- 1:24:30Speaker 12: you know, poor weather obviously maybe being a factor, citing
- 1:24:34Speaker 12: the Bucks game as well, using that could contribute to
- 1:24:37Speaker 12: the inaccuracy. Do you think that's something worth monitoring. Just
- 1:24:40Speaker 12: kind of want to check in on what you guys
- 1:24:42Speaker 12: saw in the film from that, So thanks, I'll take
- 1:24:44Speaker 12: it off one.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: Yes, Sam. You know, look, I don't know if we
- 1:24:47Speaker 3: have a large enough sample size yet on the poor
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: weather thing. I admit I kinda I kind of defend
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: the wall a little bit on the poor weather thing
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: because I think it's kind of low hanging fruit, like
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: it was cold out. Okay, Well, you play football in
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: New England, so that's really a big thing for Drake
- 1:25:03Speaker 3: May Then he's got to find the right combination of
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: whether it's gear clothing, whether it's you know, practicing in
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: the cold more. I don't know how you do that
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: in the offseason. But find a way. I don't know,
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: but I'm not. I just I think it's kind of
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: like an excuse, like, well, he played poorly in the cold.
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: I don't want to go there. I want to give
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: him the benefit of the doubt that he's gonna figure
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: that out and get better. Like this isn't like Tua
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: in the cold, you know what I mean?
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: Like this is I also think, you know, you want
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: to break it down. Okay, so it was in the cold.
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: That's a varia, But we don't really know about Drake May. Yeah,
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: was also coming off an extended week off where he
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: struggled as well against Cincinnati. So is it some of that.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: It's also we didn't talk about there's enough going into
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: the game. That's the first time Drake Mays played a
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: team twice in a season in his career. Yeah, because
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: last year he didn't play in the first Dolphins game, right,
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: he played the very end of the first Jets game,
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: got hurt very early in the second, and then he
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: played the first Bills game, played well, and then the
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: second game is that Week eighteen thing where he you know,
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: played a drive and came off. So it could be
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: any number of variables like This is just a young quarterback.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: You kind of learn as you go. These questions come
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: up and you see, oh he answers them. So or
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: he just could have had a bad day.
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: I don't know, yeah, so like.
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: It could be any number of things.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I just I admitted it. I'm sensitive to the
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: whole you know, he's bad in cold weather thing, because
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: I think it's just such a small sample size of
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: meaningful football games in cold weather, like this is basically
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: the only one. Like I'm not given gonna go back
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: to his rookie season when they are getting blown out
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: by the Chargers or something like that and say, ah,
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: he's bad. You know, that's another one, right Like that
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: teams stunk like there was nobody around him, there was
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: nothing he could do about it. This is the first
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: time that I really feel like he, you know, played
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: a true cold weather game. You know, I don't think
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: it's gonna be quite as cold in Baltimore. You know,
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: we'll see, but you know, have the Jets game, I'll
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: have the Dolphins game in Week eighteen. It's gonna be cold.
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: You know, we'll see what happens if this starts to
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: snowball like it did for Tua. Where Tua I think
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: is like oh and seven and now when it's below
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: forty degrees with like a terrible passer rating and all
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: that stuff, then we can then we can start to
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: talk about it. I think it's still a little bit
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: too early to kind of put that on him as like, oh,
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: he's a bad cold weather quarterback. I think we're being
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: a little bit premature. Sean is in Vancouver.
- 1:27:15Speaker 6: What's up, Sean, Hey, Alex, I been happy Kunaka, thank you,
- 1:27:20Speaker 6: thank you, find thank you. Will I want to find
- 1:27:22Speaker 6: out if you think Joe Toney is getting enough praise, because,
- 1:27:27Speaker 6: like you look at his career and he kept doing England.
- 1:27:30Speaker 6: He wont two Super Bowls with the Patriots. He leaves
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: the Patriots are terrible, and he goes to Kansas City.
- 1:27:36Speaker 6: They win another two super Bowls. He leaves their terrible
- 1:27:41Speaker 6: well in you know, relative terms, and he's with Chicago
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: and they were terrible. Now they're going to win their
- 1:27:47Speaker 6: division most likely. So what's your opinion about Joe Toney.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: That's a very off topic conversation, Sean, But we both
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: love Joe Touney. I think, you know, he's probably one
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: of the best guards of his era. Yeah, I think
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: he's gonna have a really really strong Hall of Fame case.
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: It's hard for guards to get into the Hall of Fame.
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: It's harder than it should be. But he's gonna have
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: a really strong case for it. I mean, he's probably not.
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: His whole thing is probably more consistency than it is dominance.
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: Like I don't think that he's had.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: Quite the peak, but like his sad moments, I mean,
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: you go back to the twenty eighteen super Bowl, is
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: going to be what they show when they make his case.
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: One on one against a Yeah, but they're I don't
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: know about man handling, but he's one on one and
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: Heed he took kind took him out of the game.
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: He won the reps. He won the reps. Zach Martin,
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: Quentin Nelson. I think those guys might have been better
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: at their peaks, Like they might have been more dominant,
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: you know, because they're both the kind of like road
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: graders too, so it's like a different type of thing.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: But he definitely definitely has the Hall of Fame case.
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: Great player. I don't know, you know, let's just leave
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: it at that. I'm not sure if I would say, like, oh,
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: the Patriots winning and the Chiefs winning is all because
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: Joe Toney, like.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: He's won a lot of football anam.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: Yeah, he's playing with braid Ian Patack Mahomes, but he's
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: an awesome player and deserves a spot in the Hall
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: of Fame. Mark is in Connecticut. What's that? Mark?
- 1:29:07Speaker 11: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. Happy holidays to
- 1:29:10Speaker 11: you as well. I was at the game over the weekend,
- 1:29:15Speaker 11: and again it was a tail of two half and
- 1:29:17Speaker 11: you know, it's just disappointing because you had like the
- 1:29:19Speaker 11: so high in the first half and then you had
- 1:29:21Speaker 11: the real love in the second half. But what I
- 1:29:24Speaker 11: wanted to ask you is, you know, the Philip Rivers
- 1:29:28Speaker 11: thing is kind of interesting because do we have anybody
- 1:29:32Speaker 11: sitting at home or anybody that is like an outside linebacker,
- 1:29:36Speaker 11: edge rusher, or even a middle linebacker that can add
- 1:29:39Speaker 11: some depth that you know, is not like a practice
- 1:29:41Speaker 11: squad player, but like a legit kind of player that
- 1:29:44Speaker 11: can come in here and help this team out.
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for the call.
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: Mark.
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: If that player existed, then he'd be on at the area.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: It's quarterback kicker on her really the only position you
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: do that He almost won, though.
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: It almost went. I had to watch it.
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: He almost won. I saw a second half. I mean,
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: Judo just got cut. Like that's probably as close you're
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: going to get to that. Yeah, I mean, and he's
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: he's not had a great year. Yeah, not had a
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: great year.
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: Chad Muma.
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: Maybe Chad Mooma is not forty five years old.
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: We were overre talking about that, Oh that thing like
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: pulling Luke Keikley out of retirement or something like that
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: what his question was.
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: But yeah, I get like, is there anybody borderline like
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: just retired that they could try to bring back for
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: a run.
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: It's a pretty ridiculous that Luke Keikley wasn't the first
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: ballot Hall of Famer him, but him coming back and
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: then resetting his clock five years after he got snubbed
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: last year would be kind of funny.
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: Would be great. He probably still play. He's not that old.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: You're tired young. Yeah, a lot of those linebackers do,
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: Chad Mouma. Was it just me or were you also
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: in on him in that draft?
- 1:30:49Speaker 3: I remember, I mean it was an awesome athlete coming out,
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: you know, one of the better combines for a linebacker
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: in his class. But it just you know, hasn't translated.
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: I'm sure that they probably have an idea of him
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: cover and kicks, like, you know, that's the type of
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: profile that.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: Also, Louke Keigley's only one year older than Matthew Judon.
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: Yeah, he's not old at all. Neither was like Patrick
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: Willis or Patrick Willis is older when he were was Uh,
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: I think it was Willis.
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: I think in Navara Bowman.
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: Navara Bowman was young too.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: Oh wilsonly played eight years.
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, a lot of those guys. All right, Hayden
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: is in Minnesota. What's up, Hayden?
- 1:31:24Speaker 10: Hey, first time, first time caller, longtime listener. Uh, just
- 1:31:29Speaker 10: want us to say, you know, how awesome you guys are.
- 1:31:33Speaker 10: You know, you guys actually talked ball and and actually
- 1:31:37Speaker 10: talk about the sports instead of this this junk on
- 1:31:40Speaker 10: you know, SBC SPN where they talk about just how
- 1:31:44Speaker 10: everything affects legacies. So I just wanted to say, you
- 1:31:49Speaker 10: guys are awesome. You can you know, and Pature's unfiltered
- 1:31:52Speaker 10: as well.
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: Thank you appreciate that, Hayden, Yeah, of course.
- 1:31:56Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: And then.
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: Two questions here.
- 1:32:00Speaker 10: One, I was looking for Christmas presents for my dad
- 1:32:03Speaker 10: and the rivalry collection he was he was wanting some
- 1:32:07Speaker 10: of the rivalry collections. Couldn't find it anywhere. Do you
- 1:32:10Speaker 10: guys know if that's gonna be on fail or you know,
- 1:32:13Speaker 10: gonna be gonna be out uh for for purchase. I
- 1:32:16Speaker 10: saw like a bunch of different different teams, you know,
- 1:32:21Speaker 10: all the other teams, but couldn't find any Patriots stuff.
- 1:32:23Speaker 10: So was just curious what what that looks like on
- 1:32:26Speaker 10: on your website there, Yeah, go ahead, and then and
- 1:32:30Speaker 10: then the and then the last question I have is
- 1:32:34Speaker 10: just you know, I've noticed this over the past couple
- 1:32:37Speaker 10: of weeks of the past couple of games watching the
- 1:32:39Speaker 10: Patriots and was just curious. I haven't heard any anybody
- 1:32:41Speaker 10: talk about it, but is there any concern from Drake
- 1:32:45Speaker 10: may like not having that closer mentality like you think
- 1:32:51Speaker 10: of like you know, Kobe Lebron fourth quarter, need a shot,
- 1:32:55Speaker 10: they got it. You know, there's been I know the
- 1:32:59Speaker 10: Dolphins game, he had an opportunity to close it out
- 1:33:02Speaker 10: and couldn't put a drive together, had to have the
- 1:33:04Speaker 10: defense close it out. I think the same thing happened
- 1:33:07Speaker 10: with the Falcons game and this Bills game two, you know,
- 1:33:12Speaker 10: three examples of him being able to have a drive
- 1:33:15Speaker 10: to close it out and then not having you know,
- 1:33:17Speaker 10: not completing that drive and making the defense close it out.
- 1:33:19Speaker 10: Is there any concern there?
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:33:22Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for the call. And I think that this
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: is another one that is filed in the interesting but
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: not quite enough evidence yet, kind of like the cold
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: weather thing. Yeah, there's definitely something to what he said.
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: The caller said, Uh, he did put together the game
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: winning drive in Buffalo, And I do think he has
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: the right mentality and has the right background to be
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: a good clutch quarterback because you know, he talks a
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: lot about basketball and his brothers and you know, wanting
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: that last shot and that sort of thing. So I
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: do think he has that mentality. But uh, I clutches
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: a thing. I'm not trying to go on nerd on
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: you and say clutch isn't a thing, But it's also about,
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: you know, being able to execute really well right, And
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: you know, it's not just enough to like want to
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: be clutch or or you know whatever. But you know
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: what makes the great ones great is that they execute
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: in the clutch on top of that. So you know,
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: he's a young quarterback and hopefully that comes along here eventually.
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: It's not that we've seen it in flashes. You know,
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: he did it against Buffalo in week five, and yeah,
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: you know, hopefully there's more of that to come to
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: the Rivalry gear. That's more of a question for the
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: boss man. But I do think that I heard a
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: rumor that maybe they were getting more in stock for
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: the holiday season at the Pro Shop. But I gotta
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: tell you, because I have the Bomber jacket. As you know,
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: people stop me everywhere when I'm wearing that thing. Like
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: if I'm out in public in that jacket, I get
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: asked at least once like where did Like how did
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: you get that? You know, it's kind of crazy how
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: much people want it, so you're not alone hated and
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: everybody's looking for the rivalry gear. It's it's hot right now.
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: But I did think I do think that Fred might
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: have said that they might be trying to restock it,
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: like for you know, Christmas coming up now, but for
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: the holidays, so maybe look on the Pro Shop. Justina
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: is in North Carolina. What's up, Justina?
- 1:35:12Speaker 6: Hi?
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: Evan, You know that you and I were the first
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: to support Drake and we knew we knew his talent,
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: but at the same time, we also noticed that at
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: the end of games he's some of the games he
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: finished good, but in some of them he also seems
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: to choke. Even back in North Carolina State, even back
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: last year with the cold, you know, through the interceptions
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: and sometimes you can see that he has that I
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: don't know what it is, but he's it's like he's
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: had that hyperactivity and he may not see things as slowly.
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: I'm just thinking that maybe he should possibly when he
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: feels that way, they should enable him the ability to
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: call the time out to regroup, you know, in it's
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: a critical situation like that at the end of the game.
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: What do you think about that?
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: Yeah, Justina, it's funny. Uh, Paul said yesterday he needed
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: a hockey time out.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: I was going to say, like, would you want a
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: basketball time out there at any point?
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: And I kind of do did kind of expect I
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: kept on looking over to the sideline to see if
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: Rabel kind of did any sort of like but you know,
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: when it was kind of getting away from them in
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: the second half, like a hockey timeout, like obviously don't
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: have as much time necessarily, or it's not exactly the same,
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: but I hear what Justina is saying, and I hear
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: what she's saying about his college game as well, because
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: that that was sort of them in college for Drake
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: May was that you could put up his ten best
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: throws from a game against anybody in the country, but
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: then you look up at the scoreboard in North Carolina
- 1:37:00Speaker 3: losing and it was like kind of like a weird
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: thing of like style over substance, where like he was
- 1:37:07Speaker 3: clearly talented and was just making unbelievable throws even at
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: North Carolina. But they his first year as the starter,
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: they won some a good amount of games and made
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: it to the a SEC Championship game, and they were
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: a good team. But his second year they were not
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: a great team. And I think a lot of people
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: were kind of like, sort of like what we do
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: with Justin Herbert, like why is this guy so good?
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: And the eye test is so clear that he's this good,
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: but then he doesn't win in the big spots. And
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: I think there's some truth to that in a young
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: player's career, But I do think that that can develop,
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: Like I do think he can get better at those
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: types of things, and I do think it's still kind
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: of a small sample size. We have eight minutes here
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: to talk about the Ravens, which is always how this
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: kind of feels like it goes down. So I'll just
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: kind of whittle this down to like my few big
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: picture points on this game. The number one thing I
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: always think about what the Baltimore Ravens before you play
- 1:38:01Speaker 3: a game against them is physicality. Like you better be
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: ready to hit on Sunday night. This is gonna be
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: an old school, smash mouthed bully ball type of game,
- 1:38:12Speaker 3: and you better bring your hard hat, says Kevin Garnett
- 1:38:15Speaker 3: would say, like, this is not this is not for
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: the fan of this is not for the week. This
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: is not gonna be one of those types of games.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: This isn't gonna be finesse. They're gonna come at you
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: in the trenches, especially offensively. Can the Patriots fine a
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: run defense in six days?
- 1:38:31Speaker 11: Like?
- 1:38:32Speaker 3: I don't know, But this Baltimore team, even though they've
- 1:38:35Speaker 3: had some struggles this year and Lamar hasn't been quite
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: as good because of the injuries and all that kind
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: of stuff, they still run the ball with the best
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: of them, and they're gonna put heavy personnel on the field.
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: You're gonna have multiple tight ends you're gonna have Patrick
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: Card their full back, who's a beast, and they're gonna
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: have Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson, and they're gonna come
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: right at you running the football. So can you find
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: a way to stop the run? I wish I had
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: like some I don't know, like schematics or x's and
- 1:39:05Speaker 3: o's that I could tell you all. But to me,
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: this is just about want to Like, you just have
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: to have that mentality to her.
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: Players say a lot, that's what we're on defenses. You
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: know how many yards the Ravens averaged on the ground
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: last week?
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: Oh? Got it? Probably a lot?
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: Nine point one?
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: Yeah, they like they do an excellent job of scripting
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: and sequencing their run game two. Yeah, Like I'm gonna
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: publish game plan my preview tomorrow. And there's one power
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: play that they run and they hit it three different ways,
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: but it all looks the same, right, and so they'll
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: run power lead just the natural way, just right down
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: at your throat run game. Then they have like a
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: misdirection toss off the power lead where they pull the
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: guard and then they toss it out to Henry out
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: on the perimeter in the opposite direction and then they
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: have power lead play actions. They have pop passes where
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: they are running play action off the power lead. Not
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: even to mention the gun runs and the RPOs and
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: the Lamar Jackson elements and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:40:06Speaker 3: It is a terrifically well designed run game. Like Todd
- 1:40:10Speaker 3: Monkin is a wizard with the run game.
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: I mean, I'm looking at the Ravens and they only
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: threw the ball twelve times last week. Now they got
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: up early, Yeah, so that helps. But like, what incentive
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: is there for the Ravens to throw the ball in
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: this game zero. I would not be surprised if the
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: Ravens come out run the ball thirty somethingtimes if the
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: Patriots opened the door for him. But now here's the thing.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: This is where you go back to last week's game.
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: The Bill showed that just because you're behind multiple scores
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: on the Patriots doesn't mean you need to stop running
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: the football. So this is where you're gonna have a chance, hopefully,
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: like if the Patriots are getting early, lad, you're gonna
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: have a chance to kind of right the wrong from
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: last week. Because in theory down twenty one nothing you
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: should stop running the ball. Bill's doubled down on running
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: the ball and it worked.
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40:52Speaker 2: I would not be surprised if the Ravens take the
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: same philosophy if they fall behind.
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: Yeah, you got. This is one of those games where
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: this is not negotiabull, stop the run type of game.
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: And you're not going to completely shut out Derrick Henry
- 1:41:03Speaker 3: and Mitchell's a good back too, Like they're change of
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: pace back. He's good as well. You're not going to
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: completely shut those guys down, but you need to manage
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: the run game so that it doesn't take over the
- 1:41:13Speaker 3: football game.
- 1:41:13Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: That's a big part of this game as well, a
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: big thing for me.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: We didn't talk about it earlier, but part of what
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: killed him against the Bills was, especially in the second half,
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: there were some players where I'm watching it and it's like,
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: all right, well they got contact with James Cook, like
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: a yard or two from line scrimmage. Great, And then
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: I look up and it's second and five. Yeah, because
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: Cook's winning the tackle when the two come together.
- 1:41:38Speaker 3: Derrick Henry is gonna win every tackle.
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: So but they he is. You're run but like you
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: got and that's where they miss Splaine. You got a
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: gang tackle. You got to get multiple defenders to the football,
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: so that Okay, you hit him two yards past line
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: of scrimmage, but then he drags guys and he falls
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: forward and suddenly you actually defended the run. Okay, but
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: it's still a seven yard run. Yeah, R Henry, it's
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: a key to the game. And it sucks because Derek
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: Henry is the best in the league at this, maybe
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: the best at this all right, Jim Brown, Earl Campbell R. Yeah,
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: it's gonna vote Earl Campbell or some of those guys. Yeah,
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: but those hidden yards killed them? Was it one hundred
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: one of one hundred and seven yards after contact for
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: one oh one out of one oh seven? I forget
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: if that was Cook or the team, but that was Cook.
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: You cannot allow hitting yards, but it just so happens.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: He's there facing is maybe the greatest hitten yard of
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: running back of all time.
- 1:42:31Speaker 3: Yeah. So it's a tough matchup in that sense. But
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: this is not Pete Lamar as a passer or a runner.
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: There's some he's clearly hurt and limited with his ability
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: to run because like he's getting caught by like defensive linemen,
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: which is just you never see that from Lamar Jackson, like,
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: that's that's super rare from him. So it's not that
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: you can take him lightly. But I do think if
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: the Patriots can turn this into a drop back passing
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: game for Lamar and at least manage the run, you know,
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: and not get completely exposed in the run game, I
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: don't think this is the best the Ravens have ever
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: really been as a drop back passing team, and they've
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: always been a little bit, you know, kind of weary
- 1:43:13Speaker 3: in that regard. Anyways, big thing with Lamar, you know,
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: I love Lamar, but going back to college, he does
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: not want to throw the ball outside the numbers. He's
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: always been a better middle of the field thrower. The
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: stats bear that out. This is one of those games
- 1:43:28Speaker 3: where when you do get him to throw, you want
- 1:43:31Speaker 3: to funnel the ball outside. You want to make him
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: try to push the ball outside the numbers. He can
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: be lethal if you let him live on seams and
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: crossers in the middle of the field, to the tight
- 1:43:40Speaker 3: ends and zay flowers, he will tear you apart. He
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: will be lethal. But he is not a great outside
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: the numbers thrower and never really has been going back
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: to college. Defensively, really quickly. They're going to spin the
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: dial on Drake May. It's what they did to Joe
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: Burrow last week. That was a first time Joe Burrow's
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: been shut out in his NFL career last week against
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: the Ravens. They are exotic. They spin the dial a lot,
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: but they have to because they don't get a ton
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: of pressure without it. So they are kind of in
- 1:44:15Speaker 3: the same boat as the Patriots, where like their standard
- 1:44:18Speaker 3: four man rushes have not been very good this year.
- 1:44:20Speaker 3: They're thirty first in the league in ZACH rate their
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: twenty fourth and pass rush win rate. So they're creating
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: pressure with scheme like they're disguising pressure. They're doing different
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: things to get quarterbacks to hold the football, which is
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: in allowing them to get pressure. So I do think
- 1:44:37Speaker 3: that Drake May is going to have time to survey
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: in this game. But they have to do a much
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: better job of reading out coverages and seeing the open
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: spaces and separating than what they did against Buffalo. So
- 1:44:50Speaker 3: I think that the Ravens are going to hit all
- 1:44:52Speaker 3: the same notes that the Bills did. They're gonna run
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: the football, They're going to just dress it up and
- 1:44:57Speaker 3: disguise it on defense, and I'm sure that John Harbaugh,
- 1:45:01Speaker 3: because he normally does, will probably have some returns you
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: know ready on the kickoff returns as well. So I
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: think that this is going to be the exact kind
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: of game that you just played. I don't know if
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: they're going to be up twenty one nothing, but the
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: type of game and the way it's going to go
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: is going to be exact.
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: They're gonna have a lot of chance to prove what
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: was real last week and what was an anomaly.
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: Yeah, this is going to be one of your types
- 1:45:23Speaker 3: of games. Al, It's going to be a bully ball.
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: This is smash mouth football on Sunday night football. The
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: Ravens need it too. I don't think they're mathematically eliminated
- 1:45:33Speaker 3: if they lose, but it gets the real dicey for them.
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: I mean, the AFC North is a beautiful mess.
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: Well, they have to win the North. They're not going
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: to win. They're not going to be a wildcard team.
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: So if they're going to make the playoffs, they have
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: to beat the Steelers. I think they play in Week eighteen.
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: I'm sure that game might be the last game is
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: Sunday night game.
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, they also at the Beckers after this one.
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: Okay, So yeah, they're in trouble if they lose this game.
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: There's no doubt about that. So that's the Ravens. I
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: wish we had a few more minutes to break that down,
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: but that's that's the juxt of it. That's the simplest
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: of it. Really quickly. Actually, just one last thing, tight ends.
- 1:46:08Speaker 3: This is gonna they he loves throwing to is likely
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: and Mark Andrews. The Patriots had some issues with Knox
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: and Kincaid last week, so that would be another key
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: to the game. But that's it. Stop the run, have
- 1:46:19Speaker 3: some fun. It's gonna be a tough one, I think
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: on Sunday night. But I do think the Patriots bounced
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: back in this game. I think they're the better team,
- 1:46:28Speaker 3: and they are at least the healthier team, you know,
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: with where Lamar is at right now. But we'll see.
- 1:46:33Speaker 3: I'll be there in Baltimore, Alex and I will be
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: back next week to talk about this Ravens game. Previous
- 1:46:39Speaker 3: the Jets, I guess. I mean, you know, whatever is
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: left of the Jets by the time that rolls around,
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: Cook Brady Cook could be not you know, they can't
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: win the division by themselves. But if the Eagles beat
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: If the Patriots win the next two and the Eagles
- 1:46:55Speaker 3: beat the Bills in Buffalo in week seventeen, raps, that's wraps. Yeah,
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: so maybe they'll be in position if they can take
- 1:47:01Speaker 3: care of business on Sunday night. Patriots on Filter will
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: be up in nine minutes. We'll be back next week
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: on Catch twenty two. We'll see you guys.
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: Then. Hey, this is Alex.
