Transcript
- 0:00Hey everyone, and welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bring you the biggest stories from social
- 0:05media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:09through Thursday. My name is Annabelle and I am
- 0:11your Wednesday Mini Scroll host and also.
- 0:13The deputy editor of The Youth. Digital media brand Centennial
- 0:16world. Welcome back to mini Tech scroll
- 0:19everyone. If you are watching this week,
- 0:22you will notice that my hair. Is very curly it.
- 0:25Is in its natural form today which we.
- 0:27Love although. I do not know how it looks with
- 0:30the headphones over it so. Hopefully.
- 0:32It doesn't look. Too crazy.
- 0:34But at the end of the day. This is a podcast, so the
- 0:37priority should be audio. But.
- 0:39We are back. For another.
- 0:40Week of Stories. This week Lauren and Alex have
- 0:43been joking with me about how many Tech scroll is literally me
- 0:47just taking the listeners hostage for like 15 minutes and
- 0:50talking about whatever I. Want to talk about whether it is
- 0:53tech or not? And honestly, it's kind of true.
- 0:55Because I feel. Like half the time I'm like
- 0:57sorry this isn't really tech and then talk about random tech
- 1:01adjacent. Stories but with like a.
- 1:03Political spin on them so I hope you're enjoying that other than
- 1:07that Please remember to rate review and subscribe to infinite
- 1:12scroll we. Are so so close to. 10K
- 1:15subscribers on YouTube. So please help us get there.
- 1:18If you haven't. Subscribed already.
- 1:21But let's just get into the content for this week.
- 1:23My first story today happened last week and is a little bit
- 1:26more of a long. Serious story to start off with,
- 1:30but it is how Adobe. Recently got.
- 1:32Bullied off blue sky? I am sure you are all familiar
- 1:36with. Blue sky, but.
- 1:37Just in case you aren't. It is what?
- 1:39People consider as the most formidable competitor to.
- 1:42Twitter it operates. Similarly with text post being
- 1:45the main form of communication on the platform.
- 1:48But I will. Say.
- 1:49The platform does lean towards the left.
- 1:52Politically, which is obviously a big.
- 1:54Difference from X these days nonetheless.
- 1:57Last week, Adobe. Finally joined the platform and
- 2:00they shared a welcome post. That read quote Hey, we're
- 2:03Adobe. We're here to connect with the
- 2:05artists, designers and storytellers who bring ideas.
- 2:07To life What's? Fueling your creativity right
- 2:10now? Drop a reply.
- 2:11Tag a creator or share your latest work.
- 2:14We'd love to see what inspires you.
- 2:15Now obviously that post does seem quite harmless, but the
- 2:19welcome. Post quickly got ratioed.
- 2:22If you don't know what that means, that time is very popular
- 2:24online, specifically on Twitter I think, but it means that a
- 2:28post has received more negative or kind of critical feedback
- 2:31rather than positive engagement. Most of the.
- 2:34Backlash towards. The platform on Blue Sky isn't
- 2:37necessarily unwarranted, but it was arguably misdirected.
- 2:41What I mean by? That is, that the gripes of
- 2:43users are fair. But I don't know if blue sky was
- 2:46necessarily. The best place to air.
- 2:48Them nevertheless I. Thought I would.
- 2:49Read what 1 user wrote so you kind of get the.
- 2:52Idea of what people are so frustrated with Adobe about so
- 2:56they said quote after decades. Paying for your apps, watching
- 3:00them become bloated messes. Full of useless.
- 3:02Features, experiencing your overpriced subscriptions and
- 3:05seeing your embrace of Gen. AI.
- 3:06I'm happily living. Adobe free after.
- 3:08Cancelling last year I also saw some blue.
- 3:11Sky Posts. That were encouraging users to.
- 3:13Flood Adobe's replies with a picture that showed.
- 3:15Alternative platforms to use for different editing functions.
- 3:19Meanwhile, while some users were kind of taking this more
- 3:21seriously. Others were.
- 3:23Obviously making a meme of this all where one popular comment
- 3:27was. A copy pasta of The Curse of
- 3:29RAW, which was. Kind of funny, but like also
- 3:32kind of crazy. As you probably gathered from
- 3:34the post though. Many people have an issue with.
- 3:36The way Adobe is. Leaning into AI.
- 3:39Last year, Adobe. Found itself in the center of
- 3:41controversy after implying that it would use content that had
- 3:44been uploaded to the platforms to train AI models internal.
- 3:48Records acquired by. Business Insider even showed
- 3:50that some of the employees were. Frustrated by the.
- 3:52Company's decisions, One Slack message.
- 3:55Wrote quote. If our goal is truly to
- 3:57prioritize our users. Best interest, which, to be
- 4:00honest, I sometimes question. It's astonishing how poor our
- 4:03communication can be. The general perception is Adobe
- 4:06is an evil company. That will do.
- 4:08Whatever it takes to F its users.
- 4:10Aside from this recent criticism, there has been like a
- 4:13negative. Attitude towards Adobe for
- 4:15years, particularly how? They managed to monopolize
- 4:18editing and as a result making it very.
- 4:20Difficult. To access anything.
- 4:22Without a subscription. I saw one TikTok explain this
- 4:25really well, so I'll inside it here.
- 4:27Adobe has cemented themselves as an industry standard.
- 4:30And this creates a cycle where in order to get a job, you need
- 4:33to know how to work Adobe software.
- 4:35So colleges teach it and so graduates know how to work it.
- 4:39And so when graduates get jobs, if the jobs do not yet have
- 4:42software, they get Adobe software.
- 4:45And then anyone else coming onto the team needs to know how to
- 4:47work Adobe software. And it goes around and around.
- 4:49And what Adobe did with this is they made it impossible to buy
- 4:53their software. They moved it all to a
- 4:54subscription service. So now if companies want to
- 4:57continue doing business, they need to keep buying the software
- 5:00over and over and over and over again at rates that just keep
- 5:04going up. The next thing Adobe did was
- 5:06they set up a platform that was, in theory, a way for people to
- 5:10sell stock photography. And then once millions and
- 5:13millions and millions and millions of images had been
- 5:16uploaded, Adobe was like, Oh, yeah, by the way, you gave us
- 5:20permission in your license agreement to scrape all this for
- 5:24AI. They used incredibly vague
- 5:26language before people had even heard of AI scraping and used it
- 5:30to scrape all this data. And by the time people realized
- 5:33that that's what they had agreed to, it was already too late.
- 5:37Anyway, back to the blue sky of it all.
- 5:39Adobe would. Go on to delete their welcome.
- 5:41Post but their. Account is still active on the
- 5:44platform. Many social media users still
- 5:47consider this a. Victory.
- 5:48Happy that. They kind of drove the company
- 5:50to delete. The post I thought.
- 5:52What Ryan Broderick? Wrote about this.
- 5:54Whole situation in the Garbage day newsletter was kind of a
- 5:57funny take on. It, he said quote if I was a.
- 6:00Predatory subscription only software monopoly that recently
- 6:03went all in on AI. I don't think I'd make it an
- 6:06account on a website full. Of leftist fairies.
- 6:08But hey, that's. Just me.
- 6:11All in all, I don't think this was necessarily a good response
- 6:14by Adobe. It's really important for
- 6:16companies when they're showing up online to.
- 6:19Look like they're. Dealing with issues and
- 6:21addressing criticism on social media, but.
- 6:23What they did? Is very much.
- 6:25The opposite. I also think this incident shows
- 6:28how different political cultures on social media platforms can
- 6:31influence how. Users approach corporations.
- 6:34In other news Related. To a Twitter.
- 6:37Alternative I have a. Quick offshoot story.
- 6:39And that is that Open AI is reportedly working on its own
- 6:42social media platform that would.
- 6:43Be like XI saw this reported by The Verge just.
- 6:46Before I sat down to record so I don't have too much information
- 6:49on this. But as reported by Kylie.
- 6:52Robinson and Alex Heath quote Open AI is working on its own X
- 6:56like social network, according to multiple sources familiar
- 6:59with the matter. While the project.
- 7:00Is still in. Early stages we're.
- 7:02Told there's an internal prototype focused on Chat GPT's
- 7:05image generation that has a. Social Feed CEO.
- 7:08Sam Altman has been privately asking outsiders.
- 7:10For advice about the project, our sources say.
- 7:13Obviously if an open AI LED X type platform comes about, this
- 7:18will probably make the rivalry between the tech Bros even
- 7:21worse. I did cover the so-called.
- 7:23Rivalry between Elon Musk and Sam Altman earlier this year
- 7:27when Elon made a. Bid to purchase.
- 7:29Open AI. But obviously this is all very.
- 7:32Early and who knows if this will even happen, but I just thought
- 7:36it was an interesting little tidbit.
- 7:37About where? Open AI.
- 7:39Sees itself. Going anyway, the next real.
- 7:43Story I have. Is an update coming out of
- 7:45YouTube and how the platform is doubling down on protecting a
- 7:48creator's likeness. On April 9th, the platform
- 7:52announced that it is supporting the No Fakes Act, which is
- 7:54legislation that has previously been introduced into the US
- 7:57Congress. But it essentially is seeking
- 8:00to, quote, protect intellectual property rights in the voice and
- 8:04visual likeness of individuals and for other.
- 8:06Purposes. So it is essentially trying to
- 8:08standardize this protection when it comes to AI generated content
- 8:13that pulls from a person's likeness.
- 8:16And for more context, the full name of the legislation is
- 8:19actually Nurture Originals, Foster Art, and Keep
- 8:23Entertainment Safe. Act which obviously.
- 8:24As an acronym. Is no fakes.
- 8:26Since being introduced, the bill has gained support from various
- 8:29entertainment organizations like SAG.
- 8:31After all. I never know how to say that, to
- 8:34be honest. And the Recording Industry
- 8:36Association, but it hasn't been. Without its criticism.
- 8:39Particularly around issues of. Free speech.
- 8:42The liability of. Platforms and just kind of
- 8:44generally vague language, but. This.
- 8:47Reportedly has been refreshed since its original introduction.
- 8:51The bill includes a notice and takedown provision where
- 8:54platforms would be exempt for hosting deepfakes and other
- 8:57quote unauthorized digital replicas as long as they.
- 9:00Act quickly to address it. And in this context, an
- 9:04unauthorized. Digital.
- 9:05Replica is essentially AI generated content that mirrors
- 9:08someone's likeness. So YouTube has expressed its.
- 9:11Support for the No Fakes Act. As well as.
- 9:14The Take it Down act which makes it a crime to publish non
- 9:17consensual intimate images, including AI generated ones.
- 9:21Obviously, this also forces social media sites to have
- 9:24processes in place to remove said content.
- 9:27This is obviously. Extremely important.
- 9:29We have seen time and time again the danger of deep fakes online.
- 9:33I mean, last year we saw. Falsified sexually.
- 9:35The explicit images. Of Taylor Swift.
- 9:37Rack up around 40 million views before being removed.
- 9:41And of course. With.
- 9:42AI generated intimate, not safe for work content.
- 9:46This is an issue that disproportionately effects women
- 9:49online. For years, obviously.
- 9:51Women have endured. The.
- 9:52Objectification and sexualization of their identity
- 9:55and likeness online without their consent but.
- 9:58Obviously. As AI advances, we are seeing
- 10:01unregulated avenues emerge for Internet users to.
- 10:04Act out certain fantasies that they.
- 10:06Couldn't. Otherwise, aside from.
- 10:08Supporting this legislation, YouTube has also announced the
- 10:10expansion of its. Pilot.
- 10:12Likeness management technology. To creators.
- 10:16The company originally introduced its detection program
- 10:19in partnership with. The creative arts.
- 10:21Agency or CAA last year, but from all the recent reporting I
- 10:25have seen it is being shared with some of the top creators on
- 10:28the platform including but not limited to Mr. Beast, Doctor
- 10:33Mike Marquez, Brownlee along with others.
- 10:36I don't think this is the full list and I couldn't exactly find
- 10:39the full list, but from all the reports that mention a list.
- 10:43Of creators. There does seem to be a gender
- 10:45imbalance with more men receiving access to this pilot
- 10:49program, and while they may just be the top creators, and they
- 10:52are. Obviously at risk of.
- 10:54AI generated content that takes their likeness.
- 10:57I wish this. Would be more.
- 10:58Accessible. Across the board and I'm sure.
- 11:00It will be. But you know, the sooner the.
- 11:02Better As for what the creators will do with.
- 11:05The pilot program. Sarah Perez.
- 11:07Reports for TechCrunch. Quote during the testing period.
- 11:10YouTube. Will work with the creators to
- 11:12scale the. Technology and refine its
- 11:14controls. The program will expand to reach
- 11:16more creators. Over the year.
- 11:17Ahead the company also. Said, however, YouTube.
- 11:20Didn't say when it expects the likeness detective system to
- 11:23launch more publicly. Overall, I think this is
- 11:26definitely. A good move because this type.
- 11:28Of content is only going to become more widespread and it
- 11:31has major consequences for misinformation as well as
- 11:35obviously AI generated not safe for work content and obviously
- 11:39legislation moves quite slowly so I'm.
- 11:41Glad that aside. From just supporting the
- 11:44legislation, they are doing their own thing.
- 11:46Anyway, my next story is a little bit more Internet culture
- 11:49E and is actually pulling from an article from the Cut, but it.
- 11:53Is all about how. Tweens are starting podcasts.
- 11:56This piece was written by EJ Dixon, who we often cite in our
- 11:59Sobstack newsletter. But she started.
- 12:02By referencing a podcast called MD Foodie.
- 12:04Boys, which is hosted by 4 Eighth Grade BFS.
- 12:09As Dixon notes. Quote It feels a.
- 12:11Bit like watching Joe Rogan, except cursing isn't allowed and
- 12:14the discussion topics are about double stuffed Oreos instead of
- 12:18IVA, mectin and ayahuasca. She explains that the podcast
- 12:21gained popularity last year when one of the hosts.
- 12:24Brothers who also access the podcast.
- 12:26Social media manager. Posted a TikTok video about
- 12:29celery that started to go. Viral The Instagram now sits
- 12:33AT219K followers. With their tik.
- 12:35T.O.K just under 100K followers. As you probably would have
- 12:38guessed by. The name.
- 12:40On the podcast they. Discuss food and.
- 12:43They also have. Different nicknames, one of them
- 12:46is Mclovin, like from Superbad. They have also made significant
- 12:49waves in the podcasting world already, even going to the bar
- 12:52stool office recently and meeting Dave Portnoy Dixon.
- 12:55Also adds that this. Obviously isn't the only tween
- 12:58slash teen run podcast. She does know a couple of
- 13:01examples, one of them being Girl Talk which includes 4 teenage.
- 13:05Girls who quote. Expose all things about their
- 13:07boyfriends, cheating exes, social media insecurity,
- 13:10hygiene, parents, and more. I think this is a really
- 13:13interesting development because we've obviously seen tween and
- 13:16kid influences for years at this point, with many of them
- 13:19starting on YouTube. Or TikTok.
- 13:21Or obviously being part of a family vlogging channel, which
- 13:23is not. Good, but obviously.
- 13:25With a general trend in the online world seemingly moving
- 13:29towards podcasting, I can see how podcasting has become
- 13:32another place for them to expand into.
- 13:35I'm obviously in two minds about.
- 13:37All of this. Because first, I know just how
- 13:40fun it can be being a tween or a young teenager to watch people
- 13:44your own age just vlogging or chatting.
- 13:47Like I grew. Up watching the likes of makeup
- 13:49by Mandy 24, also known as a Man of Steel, and later Emma
- 13:53Chamberlain, who. Are both around my?
- 13:55Age and it just hits different watching people in your own age
- 13:58demographic, so I can see why. There is a.
- 14:01Place for this kind of content, but now we just have it so much
- 14:04more context than we did back in the 20 tens around how how the
- 14:08digital space works and how influencing them operates.
- 14:12It is so clear. How overwhelming going viral can
- 14:15be and developing a following can be at such a young age.
- 14:18Also, since podcasting is a relatively nascent industry,
- 14:23there is no way that there is enough protection around these
- 14:26young. Podcasters.
- 14:27It is safe to say though, that with the rise of kid.
- 14:31Fluences and this niche of podcasting, it definitely raises
- 14:35some interesting questions around the line between hobbies
- 14:38and labor and profit, as well as consent versus control and at
- 14:42the end of the. Day that just.
- 14:43Definitely needs to be. Guardrails to protect.
- 14:46Teen and young. Podcasters especially.
- 14:48When they are out there doing it themselves also, I can't help
- 14:51but find it maybe a little bit concerning that many of these
- 14:55young boys would probably be inspired by the likes.
- 14:58Of Bastille, Joe. Rogan and Theo Von Of course,
- 15:02these podcasts may not be inherently political.
- 15:05But they would. Lean towards the right
- 15:08politically and with that context and the rise of the
- 15:10manosphere and just the general direction.
- 15:13Of the digital space as it veers towards.
- 15:15Conservatism. I don't know if this source of
- 15:18inspiration is a positive thing, but then again, they can make it
- 15:22their own thing. As well also.
- 15:23Just before we finished up, I just wanted to know that there
- 15:26is a lot happening with the Meta antitrust trial at the moment,
- 15:30which has come up since the. U.S.
- 15:32Federal Trade. Commission says that Meta has
- 15:34monopolized the social media market.
- 15:36Through. Purchasing Instagram and
- 15:38WhatsApp over the years, Honestly I'm not.
- 15:41Entirely sure, if you guys. Would be interested in that.
- 15:43Because it feels. Like a bit more of.
- 15:45A crossover of. Politics and tech.
- 15:47As opposed. To tech and Internet culture
- 15:50which is I feel like more where infinite scroll and mini scroll.
- 15:53Lives so I. I didn't.
- 15:54Choose to cover it this week but I just wanted.
- 15:56To flag it in case you wanted the rundown.
- 15:59I'd be happy to throw it in. To a later.
- 16:01Episode. OK, well I guess that is.
- 16:04Everything from me today. Lauren will obviously be jumping
- 16:07back on the pod tomorrow and there will also be a new
- 16:10episode. Of high stakes, otherwise I will
- 16:13just. Speak.
- 16:13To you next. Week, thanks for listening.
- 16:15Bye.
