- 0:04Speaker 1: Cal Poly is in session. Students swarm through campus and
- 0:07Speaker 1: file in and out of classes. They're thinking about the
- 0:09Speaker 1: chapter reading.
- 0:10Speaker 2: They have tonight, their next class, their new door, their
- 0:12Speaker 2: senior project.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Got to get to the gym.
- 0:14Speaker 2: What's for dinner tonight?
- 0:16Speaker 1: Where's the nearest bathroom? Kate and I know things can
- 0:21Speaker 1: get a bit chaotic as a student navigating the inns
- 0:24Speaker 1: and out of college life.
- 0:26Speaker 2: At cal Poly. We focus on learning by doing, but
- 0:28Speaker 2: sometimes you don't know what to do well. Emma and
- 0:32Speaker 2: I are here to answer your who, what, when, where, why,
- 0:35Speaker 2: and how's here? On CP one oh one Learned by Listening,
- 0:38Speaker 2: presented by KCPR ninety one point three. Hi Mustang, I'm
- 0:41Speaker 2: Kate Lopenske, a fourth year journalism student, and.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I'm Emma Hughes, a fourth year English student here at
- 0:47Speaker 1: cal Poly.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And we're here to share our tell all guide on
- 0:50Speaker 2: how to survive and thrive at cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
- 0:53Speaker 1: So grab a notebook. You may want to write this down.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Today we are talking about one of my favorite places
- 1:10Speaker 2: at cal Poly, the rec Center.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, you know that big building with the treadmills, StairMaster
- 1:15Speaker 1: and waits. That's the hot topic of the day. We're
- 1:18Speaker 1: going to be giving you the need to know on
- 1:20Speaker 1: all things cal Poly fitness.
- 1:22Speaker 2: We'll be covering the basics like different facilities and amenities,
- 1:26Speaker 2: the exercise and kinesiology classes, and we might just have
- 1:29Speaker 2: a special interview set up just for you.
- 1:33Speaker 1: With that being said, it's time to get physical.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Physical.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I want to get physical.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Oh it's so bad, but I love it. Okay, let's
- 1:43Speaker 2: just backtrack a little bit and talk about the overview
- 1:46Speaker 2: of the rec center and what it's like, the allure
- 1:49Speaker 2: of it. Yes, So, Emma, why don't you start us
- 1:52Speaker 2: off and just talk to me about the rec center?
- 1:54Speaker 1: Okay, So, after the remodel, the cal Poly Recreation Center
- 2:01Speaker 1: now has twenty thousand square feet and is composed of
- 2:05Speaker 1: two stories. WHOA, yes, so it has an upper exercise room,
- 2:09Speaker 1: a track exercise room, and a lower exercise room.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Do you use the rec center?
- 2:15Speaker 1: I did freshman year when I was living on campus,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and now that I don't live on campus and I
- 2:20Speaker 1: actually live like far away, like i'd have to drive
- 2:24Speaker 1: to campus to use it, I more so just work
- 2:26Speaker 1: out at home.
- 2:27Speaker 2: That makes go for walks.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So personally no, So doing this research, it was kind
- 2:33Speaker 1: of like a refresher of like freshman year time.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm really fortunate in that I live pretty close
- 2:38Speaker 2: to campus now, so I'm able to just walk on
- 2:41Speaker 2: over right and it's like less than ten minutes. So
- 2:44Speaker 2: I'm living the dream. And I love the rec Center.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It's just she's perfect to me. Yeah, the rooms are
- 2:52Speaker 2: definitely different vibes, Like the lower weight room is a
- 2:56Speaker 2: little scary. It's a little darker, and everyone that knows
- 2:59Speaker 2: what they're doing are down there. You know what I
- 3:02Speaker 2: was doing, like my heavyweightlifting, I was down there all
- 3:04Speaker 2: the time. But now that I've kind of moved away
- 3:05Speaker 2: from that, I mainly do exercise classes like we're gonna
- 3:08Speaker 2: talk about later, and I use the upper weight rooms.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember. I would always use the upper weight rooms. Yeah, totally,
- 3:15Speaker 1: especially just because like it felt more open. Also wanted
- 3:19Speaker 1: to let y'all know that in case you haven't yet
- 3:23Speaker 1: been to the rec Center and you want to get
- 3:25Speaker 1: like a lay of the land before you go, there
- 3:28Speaker 1: are guided tours available with no reservations needed, and that's
- 3:33Speaker 1: an in person tour, so someone will kind of just
- 3:35Speaker 1: walk you through the rec center, get you familiar with
- 3:38Speaker 1: the different rooms and areas available. There's also virtual tours
- 3:42Speaker 1: on their website, so feel free to check that out
- 3:44Speaker 1: in case you are unsure of how to navigate the space.
- 3:48Speaker 2: This is especially great if you are a prospective student, yes,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and wanting to check it out. I know that we're
- 3:54Speaker 2: kind of in like application season right now and people
- 3:58Speaker 2: should be hearing back around March. Yeah, so this what
- 4:02Speaker 2: this episode is actually going to be a great resource
- 4:04Speaker 2: for you, so you can learn all about our amazing
- 4:06Speaker 2: rec center.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yes, and then once you're here, just want to preface
- 4:10Speaker 1: the hours. So Monday through Friday six am to twelve am,
- 4:14Speaker 1: so it's open like all the time except for like
- 4:17Speaker 1: late late at night, but you have it all day,
- 4:19Speaker 1: welcome to use it. And then Saturday and Sunday from
- 4:22Speaker 1: eight am to ten pm, so again it's pretty pretty
- 4:26Speaker 1: open and pretty there at your disposal.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I remember once I showed up at seven am on
- 4:30Speaker 2: like a Saturday, just because like I was having problems
- 4:33Speaker 2: sleeping or something and close. Yeah, that's brutal. It was
- 4:37Speaker 2: brutal and it was really cold that morning. So I
- 4:40Speaker 2: recommend taking those hours to heart.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That's just a recommendation, but also listed on the website,
- 4:46Speaker 1: so if you're ever confused or want to double check
- 4:50Speaker 1: really quick search.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, don't make my mistake. And then so going off
- 4:55Speaker 2: of the overall layout and just like facilities and amenities,
- 4:58Speaker 2: so it has those rooms I've already talked about, and
- 5:01Speaker 2: then there's also a matte room where there's wrestling karate
- 5:06Speaker 2: classes and Emma likes to take the kids from the
- 5:09Speaker 2: Children's center there.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Yes, so the young like babies, people who are not
- 5:14Speaker 1: even like one years old yet, will keep go. The
- 5:17Speaker 1: people the little like the little tiny children. The babies
- 5:21Speaker 1: will just run around the mattroom. So that's a fun
- 5:24Speaker 1: little amenity. Also the courts, the racquetball courts, gyms, exercise studios,
- 5:30Speaker 1: also indoor track that's there.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Like I've walked on the indoor track before. I feel
- 5:34Speaker 2: like that's a little bit more accessible. Kah. People usually
- 5:37Speaker 2: just use that to get from place to place. I
- 5:38Speaker 2: don't know. There's also study spots which is really nice.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I've definitely used that before when I've been in between
- 5:44Speaker 2: classes because it is a really nice place to study
- 5:46Speaker 2: because it's very well lit. And then there's also the
- 5:49Speaker 2: bean bags and I've seen a few people sleeping on
- 5:52Speaker 2: those same in between classes. It's not a horrible.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Idea now because it's comfy. Also, something that was really
- 5:58Speaker 1: cool that I found on the website was is their
- 6:00Speaker 1: open Recreation Center schedule where they kind of list out
- 6:04Speaker 1: when you can just go and like play different sports
- 6:07Speaker 1: and do different exercises and things. So they had like
- 6:11Speaker 1: certain hours during the week when you could just go
- 6:13Speaker 1: play basketball, go do some volleyball things like that. So
- 6:17Speaker 1: definitely the website is a great resource to check out,
- 6:20Speaker 1: so highly recommend if you're looking for something to do,
- 6:23Speaker 1: why not check out the rec center schedule And.
- 6:26Speaker 2: You can borrow that equipment that you're gonna need for
- 6:29Speaker 2: open gym at the pro shop. And so this equipment
- 6:32Speaker 2: is offered for only personal use and it can't be
- 6:35Speaker 2: used by clubs organizational events, so remember that that is important.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And rec center members can check out equipment for up
- 6:42Speaker 2: to three days and equipment must be returned at least
- 6:45Speaker 2: fifteen minutes before the rec center closes on that date,
- 6:48Speaker 2: and that will help you avoid a late fee charge
- 6:51Speaker 2: and users will be charged with a replacement fee for
- 6:55Speaker 2: any lost or damaged equipment. So important information to remember.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So now let's just step outside and let's just talk
- 7:04Speaker 2: about all the fun things you can find outside of
- 7:06Speaker 2: the rec center that is still part of it. So
- 7:09Speaker 2: they have a lap pool, my favorite, the leisure pool
- 7:12Speaker 2: so fun during the spring and summer.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And then tennis courts, sand volleyball courts that are right there,
- 7:21Speaker 1: also multi purpose field, and how can we forget the
- 7:26Speaker 1: climbing park. I'm sure we've all seen it. I personally
- 7:29Speaker 1: don't even know how to like use the climbing.
- 7:33Speaker 2: You go to the paly the escapes office, you like
- 7:36Speaker 2: fill out a way where you get like a wristband,
- 7:37Speaker 2: and you can rent climbing shoes okay for the day,
- 7:40Speaker 2: and then you just climb that rock wall. I did
- 7:44Speaker 2: a freshman year. Was it second? It was fun, but
- 7:47Speaker 2: it was kind of scary because I free climbed, like
- 7:49Speaker 2: I didn't use a harness or anything. Oh yeah, so
- 7:51Speaker 2: then I liked it though.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I've always I see them out and
- 7:55Speaker 1: they play like the best music and they're just having
- 7:57Speaker 1: a blast. But I like never knew it was through
- 8:00Speaker 1: the rec center, so now you know.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And then further away from the rec Center, but it's
- 8:04Speaker 2: still kind of in that umbrella are the basketball courts
- 8:09Speaker 2: and the sports complex that's pretty much everything that you
- 8:13Speaker 2: can find there.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and the rec center does span like it's a
- 8:19Speaker 1: pretty large twenty area yeah, like inside and outside.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And part of that rec Center building you can find
- 8:27Speaker 2: the poly Escapes office. And this is super cool if
- 8:31Speaker 2: you're into all of that outdoorsy stuff they have. You
- 8:35Speaker 2: can rent equipment to go camping. You can rent paddle boards, surfboards, wetsuits,
- 8:40Speaker 2: all that fun stuff. And they also have guided trips
- 8:43Speaker 2: and you can get certifications.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah, so they offer like training and certifications such as CPR,
- 8:50Speaker 1: Wilderness First Aid, and like BLAT qualification. So like you
- 8:54Speaker 1: with the free climbing, you know, we can go get
- 8:56Speaker 1: blayed and then help you out.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I know, but you should get your bullet certification.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And now I got it in middle school because we
- 9:05Speaker 1: had a rock climbing unit for pe and I was
- 9:08Speaker 1: the only one in my class who decided to be
- 9:11Speaker 1: a blayer and then I was stuck never getting to
- 9:14Speaker 1: rock climb and I had to belay for everyone. So
- 9:16Speaker 1: kind of a poor decision on my part.
- 9:17Speaker 2: But but you're really good, is what you're saying.
- 9:19Speaker 1: So I'm a plan bro. Actually. Anyways, one important thing
- 9:25Speaker 1: to note about the rec Center, apart from all the
- 9:28Speaker 1: facilities and things that it has to offer, is that
- 9:31Speaker 1: it also has fitness classes, both for class credit and
- 9:36Speaker 1: for fun.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Okay, so let's start off with those kinesiology classes that
- 9:40Speaker 2: actually count towards your graduation credits if you have any
- 9:44Speaker 2: free units. So I was fortunate enough to have a
- 9:48Speaker 2: couple of units in there that I just got to
- 9:51Speaker 2: take for fun.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'm jealous.
- 9:52Speaker 2: So I took a jogging class, which literally put me
- 9:56Speaker 2: in the best shape of my life so far. And
- 9:58Speaker 2: I went around like back to track out there, and
- 10:01Speaker 2: I was just doing a thing, running like three miles ever.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Class, and she would have this right after our class together,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and so she would show up and be like, I
- 10:09Speaker 1: got my jog after I'm already show.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Up in my like same worry out clothes all the time.
- 10:15Speaker 2: And then I also took the weightlifting class, so that
- 10:18Speaker 2: was fun. It's just like obligatory workouts, which I really
- 10:21Speaker 2: like because like, I love working out, I absolutely love it,
- 10:26Speaker 2: but I won't do it unless there's some sort of obligation,
- 10:29Speaker 2: whether it be like a class or like I pencil
- 10:32Speaker 2: it into my calendar, like you need to work out
- 10:35Speaker 2: at this time.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Right, just hold yourself accountable.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, but other than that, they have like tennis, swimming, yoga, pilates,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and even pickleball that could count towards class credits.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And pickleball is all the rage I would face. So yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: my parents have a set, so every time I go home, cute,
- 10:52Speaker 1: I like force them to come out with me and
- 10:54Speaker 1: do pick a ball.
- 10:55Speaker 2: That's super fun.
- 10:56Speaker 1: So yeah, love pickleball.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You can also opt for the free workout classes, which
- 11:01Speaker 2: happen throughout every weekday and Saturdays. There's nothing on Sundays,
- 11:06Speaker 2: but these examples include Breakaway which is cycling, body Pump
- 11:10Speaker 2: which is weights, Zoomba one of my personal favorites, yoga,
- 11:14Speaker 2: aqua Fit, and more so, so many different things to
- 11:17Speaker 2: choose from. It's so fun because it kind of takes
- 11:20Speaker 2: all the pressure out of working out off of you
- 11:23Speaker 2: because you don't have to think about designing your own workout.
- 11:26Speaker 2: They're telling you what to do, they pick the music
- 11:28Speaker 2: for you, and I really enjoy that because it's my list,
- 11:31Speaker 2: but I'm able to put my one hundred percent effort
- 11:33Speaker 2: in well.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I also feel like Zoomba is almost like just dance
- 11:37Speaker 1: for adults. It's so fun, like live action. Yeah, like
- 11:41Speaker 1: just dance because like.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I take it a little too seriously. Like my friend
- 11:44Speaker 2: and I are at the very front row at every
- 11:47Speaker 2: single class, Like go to Zoomba at six thirty pm
- 11:50Speaker 2: on Wednesday, you will see me there. Love it, Like
- 11:53Speaker 2: it's practically like a class that I'm obligated to take.
- 11:56Speaker 2: My presence is necessary.
- 11:58Speaker 1: It's not a real classify, it's not there.
- 12:01Speaker 2: So much fun. And to tell us more about these
- 12:04Speaker 2: classes and what it's like to teach at the rec Center,
- 12:06Speaker 2: we have a special guest, Christiana, and she's just gonna
- 12:10Speaker 2: tell us all about what it's like to be a
- 12:13Speaker 2: rec center teacher here and give us so many fun
- 12:17Speaker 2: tips and tricks.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Yes, we're so happy to have her here with us.
- 12:21Speaker 2: So why don't you introduce yourself? Just your name entitle
- 12:24Speaker 2: to get us started off.
- 12:25Speaker 3: All right, So I'm Christiana Schrute. I'm a fittest instructor
- 12:29Speaker 3: at the Capollio Recreation Center. I'm really excited to be
- 12:32Speaker 3: here today.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Well, we're so excited to have you because I single
- 12:36Speaker 2: handedly credit the abs that I have coming into you.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm excited about that.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I take full credit in seeing her in my classes,
- 12:46Speaker 3: and that's probably the beauty of this episode you today
- 12:49Speaker 3: that we are kind of connecting in real life. Believe
- 12:52Speaker 3: it or not. The Recreation Center is gorgeous right now,
- 12:55Speaker 3: it was not always gorgeous, right, and there was a
- 12:59Speaker 3: time and you you can maybe ask your parents if
- 13:01Speaker 3: they studied here or maybe like dig a little bit
- 13:03Speaker 3: through the archives when the Recreation Center was a little
- 13:06Speaker 3: bit that's maybe some more.
- 13:09Speaker 1: A cake.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Right. So it was a long stretch up building didn't
- 13:13Speaker 3: really lead to community interaction and anything like that. So
- 13:16Speaker 3: just after it got remodeled, I want to say in
- 13:20Speaker 3: twenty thirteen, right, that's when I became really active in
- 13:24Speaker 3: the recreation center. It really made sense for me. And
- 13:28Speaker 3: you need to pick that time in your life out personally,
- 13:31Speaker 3: because my daughters are born in two thousand and seven
- 13:35Speaker 3: and in two thousand and nine, right, so you kind
- 13:37Speaker 3: of need to think a little bit in your own life.
- 13:40Speaker 3: It's like, all right, so what in my life is it?
- 13:44Speaker 3: What's my why that makes me go to the recreation center.
- 13:47Speaker 3: So for me, I wanted to be a role model
- 13:49Speaker 3: for my children, but I also want to take care
- 13:51Speaker 3: of myself. I'm a busy mom, I work full time,
- 13:54Speaker 3: and I needed some incentive to do something fun, and
- 13:58Speaker 3: I mean, what better way to do it? Because I'm
- 14:01Speaker 3: a professor on campus I teach innovation entrepreneurship to do
- 14:03Speaker 3: it right there where I work, So I kind of
- 14:07Speaker 3: put the workout classes on my calendar. That's my first secret.
- 14:10Speaker 3: You have to schedule your workout classes. And then in
- 14:14Speaker 3: between my academic classes, I went and I worked out,
- 14:17Speaker 3: and eventually the fitness instructors started noticing me. They were like,
- 14:20Speaker 3: oh my gosh, I see you here all the time
- 14:22Speaker 3: and it's really great. And then I thought, well, hold on,
- 14:26Speaker 3: if I were to teach these classes, I have an
- 14:28Speaker 3: extra bonus of showing up even more because I need
- 14:32Speaker 3: to teach the class and I'm already a professor as
- 14:35Speaker 3: it is. So I love teaching and I love inspiring people.
- 14:39Speaker 3: And then I became certified.
- 14:41Speaker 2: That's incredible. That balance is extremely impressive. The fact that
- 14:44Speaker 2: you're able to be a professor and an inspiring and
- 14:47Speaker 2: motivating workout in structure as well.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Thank you. I also love the like penciling it into
- 14:52Speaker 1: your schedule, so it's like holding yourself accountable and being like,
- 14:55Speaker 1: I have to show up and other people will show
- 14:57Speaker 1: up as well.
- 14:58Speaker 3: When people walk in honor that they spend this time
- 15:01Speaker 3: with me. I want to make it as special as possible.
- 15:04Speaker 3: I just taught a spin class and I heard somebody
- 15:06Speaker 3: say I heard you singing, and I was like, yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 3: I'm incredibly bad and I'm singing. But the reason why
- 15:12Speaker 3: I'm doing it is not to impress you, is just
- 15:14Speaker 3: to let you know that I'm doing this to make
- 15:16Speaker 3: this a fun workout, and if it involves me singing
- 15:20Speaker 3: really badly, let's.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Do it right totally.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Can you just tell us a bit about the different
- 15:25Speaker 2: RAC classes that you teach, and like, do you have
- 15:28Speaker 2: a favorite one or are they all like your babies?
- 15:30Speaker 2: You all just love them equally.
- 15:32Speaker 3: That's such a great word, because that's how I look
- 15:34Speaker 3: at them, right. It's just like if you have siblings,
- 15:38Speaker 3: you might be drawn closer to one sibling or another sibling,
- 15:41Speaker 3: but in reality, you know, you kind of relate to
- 15:44Speaker 3: all of them. So when I started with les Mill's
- 15:48Speaker 3: Body Pump, I would say, if you have not tried
- 15:51Speaker 3: that class, it's a barbell based, choreographed weightlifting class, that
- 15:56Speaker 3: one will change your body a lot, right.
- 15:59Speaker 1: It's as it's.
- 16:00Speaker 3: A one hour you're running through all muscle groups with weights,
- 16:03Speaker 3: and especially as females, we tend to not want to
- 16:06Speaker 3: work out with the machines or with weights. That class
- 16:09Speaker 3: will change your body a lot. So that was my
- 16:11Speaker 3: first baby, and then after that I became certified as
- 16:15Speaker 3: a spin instructor. And I know I'm using the word
- 16:18Speaker 3: spin now at the recreation center, please look for the
- 16:22Speaker 3: word breakaway. It's taught in Studio one. You need to
- 16:26Speaker 3: look for the word breakaway. So that's how we call
- 16:28Speaker 3: it because it's cycling or breakaway. So that studio one,
- 16:32Speaker 3: Studio three is where the weightlifting and cardio classes take place.
- 16:36Speaker 3: In Studio two, I'm teaching the class that Cage just
- 16:39Speaker 3: talked about, which is that bar or pilates class, and
- 16:43Speaker 3: that's another certification that I have. And in a little
- 16:45Speaker 3: while I'm going to go over there and teach total
- 16:48Speaker 3: body resistance training, which uses straps that I attached at
- 16:53Speaker 3: an anchor point and you're using that to use your
- 16:56Speaker 3: own body weight to build brasilience and using bait. Basically
- 17:01Speaker 3: very simple things that you could do at home, but
- 17:03Speaker 3: you get stronger without always using weights. And then I
- 17:06Speaker 3: teach a six back apps class as well, and again
- 17:10Speaker 3: my goal is to look at them like they all
- 17:12Speaker 3: work together, like you're creating a really good meal and
- 17:14Speaker 3: you're using spices. So they're all spices in my little portfolio,
- 17:18Speaker 3: and I wouldn't want to put any other ones in
- 17:22Speaker 3: there right now, and my spice cabinet is pretty full.
- 17:25Speaker 3: But at the same time, they all have a great
- 17:28Speaker 3: place in there, lovely.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And then as far as your class is going, it
- 17:32Speaker 1: might be different for each class. But are they for everyone?
- 17:36Speaker 1: Are they for like people who are beginners, experts, things
- 17:40Speaker 1: like that, or can anyone show up?
- 17:42Speaker 3: Oh, that's a great question. So it's kind of like
- 17:44Speaker 3: the mind and the body connection. Right there is a
- 17:47Speaker 3: beautiful schedule when you walk in a weekly schedule, look
- 17:50Speaker 3: at the schedule and then read the class description and
- 17:54Speaker 3: see whether that's something that your mind and your body
- 17:57Speaker 3: kind of resonates with. And I would say say that
- 18:00Speaker 3: all classes could be beginner friendly.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 2: What I appreciate about your teaching style is like, for example,
- 18:08Speaker 2: I just keep using bar because that's the class that
- 18:09Speaker 2: I take with you, whenever someone's doing a modification, you'll
- 18:13Speaker 2: look at them and say, I love that. Keep listening
- 18:15Speaker 2: to your body. So I feel like that's the appeal
- 18:18Speaker 2: of these recenter classes that maybe come off as a
- 18:22Speaker 2: bit more challenging when you're looking at the overall description,
- 18:25Speaker 2: but like you are able to modify, which kind of
- 18:27Speaker 2: leads me to my next question. So Emma and I
- 18:30Speaker 2: were talking before this and I was like, you have
- 18:33Speaker 2: to come to one of Christiana's classes with me, like
- 18:35Speaker 2: there's so much fun. She's like, I'm scared, Like it's
- 18:38Speaker 2: a it's an intimidating environment being in that room with
- 18:40Speaker 2: all those people, having to push yourself physically. So what
- 18:43Speaker 2: would you say to someone who is like more hesitant
- 18:46Speaker 2: to take one of those challenging fitness classes.
- 18:49Speaker 3: So it helps to go with a friend, right, because
- 18:52Speaker 3: that friend then can help you, Especially in body pump,
- 18:54Speaker 3: there's a lot of setup that goes into this and
- 18:58Speaker 3: the other thing that helps, and I'm picking body pump
- 19:00Speaker 3: non purpose is to go a little bit earlier and
- 19:03Speaker 3: connect with the instructor. So I always help people get
- 19:07Speaker 3: set up at the beginning of class. I always ask
- 19:09Speaker 3: is there anybody here for the first time, And then
- 19:11Speaker 3: people raise the hand and we give them like a
- 19:13Speaker 3: good round of applause and they're like, oh my gosh,
- 19:15Speaker 3: it's great. I'm getting like you know, and standing ovation
- 19:18Speaker 3: here so the instructor will help you, and that is
- 19:22Speaker 3: something that's really important. You can't walk in when the
- 19:25Speaker 3: class is starting because at that point the instructor has
- 19:28Speaker 3: to get started. So sometimes in body pump, I have
- 19:29Speaker 3: people that come in just as I'm starting, and I
- 19:33Speaker 3: know that they are there for the first time, and
- 19:35Speaker 3: I so wish I could go over and give them
- 19:37Speaker 3: like a welcome spiel about what they need, et cetera.
- 19:40Speaker 3: And it makes it challenging because that class again needs
- 19:43Speaker 3: a lot of setup, or a spin class which might
- 19:46Speaker 3: need a setup of your bicycle. So go earlier, ten
- 19:50Speaker 3: minutes earlier, and tell the instructor I'm here for the
- 19:53Speaker 3: first time, can you get me set up? I actually
- 19:56Speaker 3: celebrate modifications because it's just like having allergies or food sensitivities.
- 20:03Speaker 3: If you're aware about it, you can really like thrive
- 20:07Speaker 3: in your life. Right. I mean, it's no like one
- 20:11Speaker 3: box fits all. If you know how your body responds
- 20:14Speaker 3: to a certain exercise and you need to modify it,
- 20:16Speaker 3: I love it.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Yeah. So, then once you have people set up and
- 20:21Speaker 1: in your classes, how do you keep people motivated and
- 20:24Speaker 1: keep people going during the actual work.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I know the answer to this, but I want to
- 20:28Speaker 2: hear it come from you.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I mean, like I just pointed out, I
- 20:32Speaker 3: was singing this morning, I am definitely. I don't want
- 20:37Speaker 3: to say you know that it's it's really good, especially
- 20:41Speaker 3: with my accent. And then I change the words of
- 20:44Speaker 3: the song to match what we are doing. Okay, it's
- 20:47Speaker 3: like making it like about a hill because we're going
- 20:51Speaker 3: up a hill on the bike right now, making it
- 20:54Speaker 3: about a sprint because now we's sitting in on my
- 20:56Speaker 3: going fast. And so the people, whether they like to
- 20:59Speaker 3: singing or not, just have to laugh. They're like, oh
- 21:01Speaker 3: my gosh, this lady, she's.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Like you're squeezing exactly exactly.
- 21:07Speaker 3: So I make the song work, and that helps. Another
- 21:12Speaker 3: thing that helps is again sharing a little bit about yourself, right,
- 21:16Speaker 3: so I weaven little stories about my daughter, about my daughters,
- 21:21Speaker 3: about my husband. Again, speaking about the mind and the body,
- 21:25Speaker 3: to not only work your body, but also do something
- 21:29Speaker 3: fun with your brain and maybe just do something listening
- 21:32Speaker 3: to something different than and I usually talk about inspiring
- 21:35Speaker 3: things too, and how people are like, oh my gosh,
- 21:38Speaker 3: this lady she's actually doing some fun things. Maybe I
- 21:41Speaker 3: should try something like that too. She's already smiling right there.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I was just thinking about how, like when I'm just
- 21:46Speaker 2: in pain, trying to like be in the moment, I'll
- 21:49Speaker 2: play Christian A Bingo in my head because you'll like
- 21:52Speaker 2: break up similar things. My ones for you are your daughters,
- 21:56Speaker 2: the color pink, tailor swift and right now Valentine's Day.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Oh gosh, it's the best.
- 22:01Speaker 2: So I'll be like, there it is. It's so funny
- 22:04Speaker 2: and it definitely keeps me engaged. So it works.
- 22:07Speaker 3: This is one of the biggest compliments, Christiana Bingo. I
- 22:12Speaker 3: love it. How amazing, Thank you.
- 22:14Speaker 2: You're welcome. And then so a lot of people show
- 22:20Speaker 2: up for your classes again and again and again. So
- 22:23Speaker 2: what would you say is your key to having those
- 22:25Speaker 2: same students show up to your classes a week after week.
- 22:29Speaker 3: I think the results build the movement that you're kind
- 22:33Speaker 3: of generating buzz, and I think that's really really important.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I would see people taking selfies after my class and
- 22:42Speaker 3: they post it, and I think that's just the very
- 22:45Speaker 3: best thing because it builds accountability. You could take a
- 22:48Speaker 3: picture before you walk into the rec center and take
- 22:50Speaker 3: a picture after the rec center and say this was
- 22:52Speaker 3: really fun. I'm so glad I did that and somebody
- 22:54Speaker 3: will see it and they were like, oh my gosh,
- 22:55Speaker 3: let's do it together next time. So I think that
- 22:58Speaker 3: I really treasure that you do that and please coming back. Yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Perfect, So switching gears here, We're coming up in our
- 23:07Speaker 1: last three questions and we wanted to keep it kind
- 23:09Speaker 1: of fun. But what is your favorite part about being
- 23:13Speaker 1: a rec center instructor?
- 23:15Speaker 3: The people? For sure, Yeah, it's the people. It's making
- 23:19Speaker 3: the people smile, appreciating that they are there to get healthier,
- 23:24Speaker 3: and really sharing that moment with them.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Wonderful.
- 23:28Speaker 2: And then we also wanted to know do you use
- 23:30Speaker 2: the rec center for your personal fitness or are you
- 23:32Speaker 2: just there to teach classes.
- 23:34Speaker 3: That's a great question. So now with my schedule, how
- 23:38Speaker 3: it is. I mostly use the pool for my personal fitness,
- 23:45Speaker 3: not in the wind, I have to be honest.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And then our last question here is just in general,
- 23:51Speaker 1: which you might have already answered it, but what is
- 23:52Speaker 1: your favorite part about the rec center? Just overall?
- 23:56Speaker 3: I like that there is so much light coming in,
- 23:59Speaker 3: I think.
- 24:00Speaker 2: But actually I really thought to think about that, all.
- 24:02Speaker 3: The big windows, it's really smoothing your path to a
- 24:06Speaker 3: successful workout because you see the sun coming in, you
- 24:10Speaker 3: connect with the world outside. And it's just such an
- 24:15Speaker 3: important piece that there are all these windows everywhere. You
- 24:18Speaker 3: can see the pool outside, you can see other people
- 24:21Speaker 3: working out. It's very open and airy and filled full
- 24:25Speaker 3: of light.
- 24:26Speaker 2: And then, real quick, before you have to go teach
- 24:28Speaker 2: your TRX class, go ahead and plug your podcast in
- 24:31Speaker 2: case people want to tune in your Instagram where people
- 24:34Speaker 2: can find you.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Yeah, so please connect with me. My podcast is called
- 24:38Speaker 3: Happy Healthy Hussle. Of course, now listening to me, I
- 24:42Speaker 3: see nodding heads here, You're like, that totally makes sense
- 24:45Speaker 3: because I want that you keep hussling, but that you

- 24:58Speaker 3: but also lots of business advice there for the students

- 25:33Speaker 1: loved hearing from you.
- 25:34Speaker 2: And we're gonna link all of her resources and like
- 25:38Speaker 2: where you can find her in the bio, so please
- 25:41Speaker 2: check that out. I know that we will. Right after this,
- 25:43Speaker 2: I'm definitely gonna make one of those smoothies.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Yes, no, that sounded so good. Well, that's all the
- 25:51Speaker 1: time we have for today. One last piece of advice,
- 25:54Speaker 1: don't be afraid to go to the rec center and
- 25:56Speaker 1: try something new. Whether you are looking for an intense
- 25:58Speaker 1: cardio workout, or same day at the pool, or just
- 26:01Speaker 1: a place to study, the rec has it all, so
- 26:03Speaker 1: make sure to get your money's worth while you're still paying.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yeah, when are you going to ever have this opportunity again?
