- 0:01Speaker 1: And you're in hell week. And you're hour one of
- 0:04Speaker 1: 130 fucking hours. All you want to do is go
- 0:07Speaker 1: back home.
- 0:09Speaker 2: You want the warmth. You may want something to eat.
- 0:12Speaker 2: You want your girl to hold you.
- 0:14Speaker 1: All those things of comfort are there in that one second.
- 0:17Speaker 1: And this is where people lose. How hard that training is.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I don't expect anybody to understand it.
- 0:24Speaker 1: But 1%. But the loud voices of this world. Are
- 0:29Speaker 1: the 99% who don't understand exactly what you have to do.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So I ended up doing like... Almost like back to
- 0:40Speaker 1: back 200 mile runs. So I got lost the first time.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I got seriously sick. Was off course.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So basically... I... Bed down... About 12 hours. Then I
- 0:52Speaker 2: got back in the race. I was still part of
- 0:54Speaker 2: the official race now. Got back in the race... After
- 0:56Speaker 2: 12 hours of being out of the race. So now...
- 0:59Speaker 2: I get to about 200 and some odd miles and
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm sick as hell. Can't breathe.
- 1:04Speaker 1: How to pulmonary edema. Now the doctor tells me, if
- 1:09Speaker 1: you get off course now and you go to the doctor,
- 1:12Speaker 1: you won't be able to come back and finish the race.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So I had to make a call. So this is
- 1:16Speaker 2: where you're talking about. I'm literally laying in bed and
- 1:19Speaker 2: I'm feeling better. I thought, honestly, I swear to God,
- 1:23Speaker 2: I thought that someone was speaking to me. It was like,
- 1:26Speaker 2: you're not done yet, motherfucker.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It was actually probably my subconscious saying, get your ass
- 1:31Speaker 1: back out there.
- 1:32Speaker 2: This isn't for glory.
- 1:33Speaker 1: No. This is now for the fact that you can.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So you can sit here and not and think about
- 1:40Speaker 1: that for a whole year. Or you can go out
- 1:44Speaker 1: there for yourself and take some kind of pride in
- 1:46Speaker 1: knowing that you could and you did. You figure it
- 1:53Speaker 1: out by going inside yourself. by callousing over the victim's mentality.
- 1:59Speaker 1: You're always a victim, even if you have everything in life,
- 2:03Speaker 1: until you realize.
- 2:04Speaker 2: What you've achieved.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And they forget that, and it takes a very, very
- 2:10Speaker 1: unique person and unique mind to do some of these
- 2:14Speaker 1: jobs that are necessary in this world. So we are
- 2:18Speaker 1: the only access. We have to save ourselves. Mental hardening,
- 2:24Speaker 1: mental toughness, It's a perishable skill. Just because you went
- 2:28Speaker 1: through some training once and you got through it, doesn't
- 2:31Speaker 1: mean it lasts forever. And that's where most people hated
- 2:36Speaker 1: me because I realized that. You recall everything and you
- 2:41Speaker 1: definitely must recall when it comes to the mind. That
- 2:45Speaker 1: is one of the biggest requalifications you must have. And
- 2:47Speaker 1: when you're at that level, you got to recall every day.
- 2:50Speaker 1: A lot of people, man, how do you do what
- 2:53Speaker 1: you do? At the end of the day, I ask
- 2:56Speaker 1: myself one question. Can I take one more step? And
- 2:59Speaker 1: usually the answer is yes. So if you can answer
- 3:03Speaker 1: that question and not take another step, that is real failure.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So a lot of people can take one more step,
- 3:09Speaker 1: but they choose not to. I don't know if you
- 3:11Speaker 1: can take two steps. You got to answer that question
- 3:13Speaker 1: after you take the first step. But I can always
- 3:16Speaker 1: take one more step. So if I choose not to,
- 3:18Speaker 1: that's on me.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And I got to live with that.
- 3:19Speaker 1: All the fun.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Fucking times that I was like, this is, I'm not
- 3:27Speaker 2: going back. And I went back. I'm not going back.
- 3:30Speaker 2: And I went back. I'm not going back. And I
- 3:31Speaker 2: went back.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It showed me even more of what we have as humans,
- 3:36Speaker 1: if we're willing to go there and we're willing to push.
- 3:39Speaker 2: That extra step. I'm always looking for more.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I'm always looking for what's the next thing for myself?
- 3:46Speaker 1: How can I grow? And that right there was the
- 3:50Speaker 1: next thing for me.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I had to take myself to the sewer to show people, hey,
- 3:56Speaker 3: I come from hell. Once you come face to face
- 4:02Speaker 3: with who you are, you have a starting point. All right,
- 4:07Speaker 3: I'm not real smart. I have no courage. I have
- 4:11Speaker 3: no self-esteem. I have no nothing.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Nothing. That's my starting point. Now we can move from there.
- 4:20Speaker 2: What do you think most people get wrong about motivation?
- 4:24Speaker 1: They think it's a permanent fix. They think it's something
- 4:28Speaker 1: that is a constant. They think that maybe once I
- 4:33Speaker 1: get it, I'm going to hold on to it. Nothing
- 4:37Speaker 1: is permanent. Nothing is permanent. And a lot of times
- 4:41Speaker 1: you have to learn to perform without motivation. You have
- 4:45Speaker 1: to learn to perform without purpose. You have to learn
- 4:47Speaker 1: to perform a lot of different things. And that's what
- 4:50Speaker 1: people think. They think I need to have this motivation
- 4:54Speaker 1: to work out, to study, to be better. So if
- 4:58Speaker 1: they don't have it, they just don't do it. And
- 5:01Speaker 1: that's where you fail. You have to learn to train
- 5:05Speaker 1: your mind well beyond motivation. If you have motivation, that's great.
- 5:11Speaker 1: That's some kindling to the fire. All it takes is
- 5:13Speaker 1: a little bit of spark and you can burn a
- 5:15Speaker 1: whole forest up. But motivation, you have to learn to
- 5:19Speaker 1: exist without it. You have to learn to be, you
- 5:22Speaker 1: have to be your best self and your least motivated.
- 5:25Speaker 2: And that's the tricky part about all that. Motivation is
- 5:28Speaker 2: just a word.
- 5:30Speaker 1: You have to have these different things in your mind
- 5:32Speaker 1: on where you want to go and know that motivation
- 5:34Speaker 1: is not going to get me there.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Because I'm not going to always be motivated. Jocko said
- 5:39Speaker 2: the exact same thing. You said that discipline eats motivation
- 5:41Speaker 2: for breakfast.
- 5:43Speaker 1: But without a clear headspace, there's no discipline. Discipline is great.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Motivation is great. But if you can't fit shit in
- 5:52Speaker 1: your brain because it's all fucking cluttered with shit, there's
- 5:56Speaker 1: no discipline.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Let me use Hell Week. This is a perfect example.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Hell Week is 130 hours. And 130 hours is a
- 6:05Speaker 2: lot of seconds.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Let's say you're in extreme cold water and your life
- 6:15Speaker 1: is flashing before your eyes.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Every time that wave goes over your head, your thought
- 6:20Speaker 2: process is, I got to get the fuck out of
- 6:22Speaker 2: this water.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And you're in hell week and you're hour one of
- 6:34Speaker 1: 130 fucking hours. And then this is where that one
- 6:39Speaker 1: second decision comes in. You forgot every reason why you
- 6:43Speaker 1: wanted to be there. You don't care about seals. You
- 6:47Speaker 1: don't care about any of this. You don't care about
- 6:48Speaker 1: fighting for your country. You don't care about that gaudy
- 6:51Speaker 1: gold trident that they.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Put on your chest. You don't care about any of
- 6:54Speaker 2: that shit no more. All you want to do is
- 6:56Speaker 2: go back home.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You want the warmth. You may want something to eat.
- 7:01Speaker 1: You want your girl to hold you. All those things
- 7:04Speaker 1: of comfort are there in that one second. And this
- 7:07Speaker 1: is where people lose. What I do in that one second,
- 7:11Speaker 1: because we all think about quitting when it's hard. But
- 7:15Speaker 1: what you have to do in that one second is
- 7:17Speaker 1: hard to process information during pain.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Because that pain takes over and you can't think rationally.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You're thinking about fight or flight, save yourself. That's not
- 7:32Speaker 1: a rational thought. It's not a thought that's going to
- 7:34Speaker 1: get you through hard times. Most people fail that one second.
- 7:41Speaker 1: So what happens, what I do, I physically stayed in
- 7:45Speaker 1: that water. Because if I get out of the water,
- 7:48Speaker 1: I quit. So I physically stay in the water, but mentally,
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm on.
- 7:52Speaker 2: The fucking beach with the fucking instructors. I'm still in
- 7:57Speaker 2: the water, physically, but mentally, I'm back, I'm chilling.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I got my parka on, and now I'm thinking logically,
- 8:02Speaker 1: because I'm warm now.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Mentally, I'm warm. I've taken that one second. Let's not
- 8:07Speaker 2: quit yet, guys. Let's fucking think about it. your options.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Where are you going to end up if you quit this?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Where are you going to go? I calm my brain
- 8:17Speaker 1: down because your brain just wants to get the fuck out,
- 8:19Speaker 1: ring the bell, push your helmet down, get warm.
- 8:21Speaker 2: And then you're really fucked. And these are the things
- 8:24Speaker 2: you have to think about the one second decision. So that's,
- 8:27Speaker 2: that's all about.
- 8:28Speaker 1: It's about gaining control of your mind and then saying,
- 8:32Speaker 1: I really do want to be here. And I'm going
- 8:36Speaker 1: to have a bunch of these one seconds through this.
- 8:39Speaker 2: 130 hour journey.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And I have to learn to control these because if
- 8:43Speaker 1: I fail one of these one seconds, I will not
- 8:46Speaker 1: be a SEAL. I will not be a doctor. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: will not be a lawyer. I will not be whatever
- 8:49Speaker 1: the fuck it is. So that's how important that one
- 8:52Speaker 1: second decision is. It's all about your mind takes control
- 8:56Speaker 1: of you.
- 8:57Speaker 2: You have to say, fuck you. I run this mother.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And that's what that's all about.
