Transcript
- 0:00you Hello and welcome to another episode of Abby
- 0:07the podcast lady so you clicked on this because
- 0:09you obviously saw the title of Taking a break
- 0:12from your podcast without losing momentum and
- 0:14that is what we are going to be covering today
- 0:16I have a pretty extensive background with podcasting
- 0:19at this point I am producing 10 shows every single
- 0:23week for different people across the country
- 0:26and across the world and they're all in different
- 0:29places with what they want their podcast to do
- 0:31for them for their brand for their business and
- 0:33a lot of have been doing this for a while. A
- 0:35lot of my clients have had for almost four years
- 0:37now. So I have some really dedicated people making
- 0:40some really incredible content, but that doesn't
- 0:42mean that they don't need to take a break every
- 0:45now and then. Podcasting is a grind and you see
- 0:47the best results when you stick with it for a
- 0:49long time, but life doesn't always work that
- 0:51way. I think we're all well aware that we go
- 0:53through different seasons and different struggles
- 0:55and different priorities. Things change and your
- 0:58podcast should be able to adapt with that as
- 1:00well. So today we're gonna be talking about how
- 1:02you can take a break. while you're podcasting,
- 1:04but not lose momentum in the process. We're gonna
- 1:07go over some case studies of the clients that
- 1:09I work with and what they're doing. And I also
- 1:11wanna touch on a celebrity podcast that's been
- 1:14doing this lately as well. So let's dive in.
- 1:16The first one I wanna touch on is my client Liz.
- 1:19She is the host of the Rooted Agri -Tourism podcast.
- 1:22She also hosts the Farmers to Florist podcast
- 1:25that just launched in the month of March in 2026
- 1:28as a companion to her new online software platform.
- 1:31She is a busy lady. She not only has two podcasts,
- 1:35but she also, like I mentioned, has an online
- 1:37software platform. She's trying to get off the
- 1:39ground. She just launched her very first book.
- 1:42She wrote a memoir and put that out into the
- 1:45world. That published the first week of March
- 1:47of 2026. She also is running an event venue.
- 1:50She's a wedding florist and she's running a cut
- 1:52flower farm. So she's got a few things going
- 1:54on and the podcast. is a priority. I'm not saying
- 1:58it's not a priority for her. It definitely is.
- 2:00Both podcasts are. But with this busy season
- 2:03of life that she's in, she did need to take a
- 2:05step back from the Rooted Egg Retourism podcast
- 2:07and just pump the brakes on it a little bit.
- 2:09And that is totally fine. When she reached out
- 2:11to me and she expressed that she didn't think
- 2:14that she had the capacity to make the Rooted
- 2:16Egg Retourism podcast on the scale of what she
- 2:19wanted it to during this busy season, I said,
- 2:21that's fine. It is so fine. That podcast has
- 2:24been going on for, well, it's actually been a
- 2:26few different podcasts. It started as the Sunny
- 2:29Mary Meadow podcast, which was all about her
- 2:31cut flower farm. She thought she was going to
- 2:33connect with her customers that way. Turns out
- 2:35her customers just wanted to buy flowers. They
- 2:37didn't really care how they were grown, but she
- 2:38found this audience of people wanting to start
- 2:41cut flower farms. So it morphed into the Flower
- 2:44Farmer Forum podcast. We rebranded it. And then
- 2:47a couple of years later, we rebranded it again
- 2:49to be Rooted Agri -Tourism to just kind of expand.
- 2:51the scope of what she wanted to talk about and
- 2:54she just couldn't give it the attention that
- 2:56she thought it deserved during the super busy
- 2:58season of her life with trying to you know market
- 3:01a book and run this software platform and book
- 3:05out her venue so it's just been kind of on the
- 3:07back burner and what I've been noticing because
- 3:09I've been monitoring the numbers of this podcast
- 3:11as we have not released an episode since early
- 3:14February what I've seen is that the numbers well
- 3:18they'll never go down your downloads will never
- 3:20go down I'll tell you that much I mean they might
- 3:22like on a weekly basis but the overall downloads
- 3:26are still going up it's still trending up because
- 3:28she has this back catalog of so many evergreen
- 3:31episodes which if you're unfamiliar with what
- 3:34evergreen is it means that they're always relevant
- 3:36it's good information that people can find years
- 3:39down the road and still find pertinent to what
- 3:41they're looking for and she has this incredible
- 3:44deep back catalog of episodes that people are
- 3:47still discovering that people are still finding
- 3:49because we set up correctly with proper keywords
- 3:52and tags and there's blogs built for every single
- 3:55episode so people are still on the internet searching
- 3:57for these topics finding the podcast downloading
- 4:00it listening to it subscribing following along
- 4:03even though there hasn't been a new episode in
- 4:06a month and a half now so she Kind of, this is
- 4:08gonna sound weird, but she kind of has a privilege
- 4:11of taking a step back and not releasing new episodes
- 4:14right now just because she has such a deep back
- 4:16catalog of episodes. So if you are in a position
- 4:19of you've been podcasting a long time, you got
- 4:21a bunch of episodes and you just need to take
- 4:23a break, you probably can. And you're probably
- 4:25still gonna get downloads. Another example of
- 4:28this happening is my very first podcast. It's
- 4:30called The Small Town Tourist. It was just a
- 4:33passion project. I never really... had big aspirations
- 4:36with it I just kind of wanted to make it and
- 4:38last year at this time I put out my last episode
- 4:42of it not on purpose just because I got busy
- 4:45producing for other people and your own shows
- 4:47kind of end up on the back burner when you're
- 4:49working for other people so I just didn't have
- 4:51time to make the small town tourist anymore I
- 4:54actually went and checked in on the analytics
- 4:57for that show last week and I was shocked to
- 5:00see that I had crested like over I think it was
- 5:03like 12 12 ,000 downloads on a show that I think
- 5:06when I last checked it I was maybe at 6 ,000
- 5:09a year ago. I don't know something took off again.
- 5:12I had the proper SEO built for it I had keyword
- 5:15rich show notes. I had like location tags. I
- 5:18had blogs built for everything So something somewhere
- 5:21caught someone's attention and that podcast is
- 5:24still getting listens It's still getting downloads
- 5:26to this day, even though I haven't touched it
- 5:29or done anything with it in over a year. So that's
- 5:32another example of taking a break and just kind
- 5:34of letting it sit and seeing what happens. If
- 5:36you don't have time for it, people are probably
- 5:38still going to be discovering your show, even
- 5:41if you're not actively making new episodes. Another
- 5:43example of this is my client, Amanda Radke. She
- 5:46is the host of the Heart of Rural America podcast.
- 5:49She's based in Mitchell, South Dakota, and she
- 5:51is in a super busy season of her life as well.
- 5:53She's a public speaker. She's on the road a lot.
- 5:56She is a private property rights activist, and
- 5:59she is just kind of leading the charge for that
- 6:02in South Dakota. She's also a cattle rancher
- 6:04and she's got four kids. So she is super busy.
- 6:07She started the year off really strong. We had
- 6:09episodes lined up for, oh gosh, I think we had
- 6:11them like through the first or second week of
- 6:14March. She realized that we were at episodes
- 6:16and she didn't have time to record more and that's
- 6:18okay. So instead what we're doing because we've
- 6:21seen such a big uptick in her numbers for downloads
- 6:24as well is I really wanted to keep this momentum
- 6:26going. And I knew that we would probably need
- 6:28to keep the feeds at least fed. So what we were
- 6:32doing for that is going back and finding some
- 6:35of her more popular episodes, which if you use
- 6:38RSS .com, you can actually sort your episodes
- 6:41based on how many downloads they had. So you
- 6:44can kind of go in and see, OK, that episode really
- 6:46resonated with people. That one was super popular.
- 6:49That one had a huge download spike. Let's replay
- 6:51those episodes. and bring them to the top of
- 6:54the feed so you can go and grab the audio. I
- 6:58luckily keep everything in a folder for all of
- 7:00my clients so we can go through and grab that
- 7:02old audio. Grab the cover art if you need to,
- 7:05copy and paste the title and the description
- 7:07over. Make sure you put in the title that it
- 7:09is a replay episode so people know, especially
- 7:11if they're diehard listeners that like... Have
- 7:13I listened to this one? Yes, you probably have
- 7:15but you know what? It's good to revisit these
- 7:17things sometimes So I've been going through and
- 7:20putting replay episodes together for her on her
- 7:22RSS feed Just so that every Wednesday morning
- 7:26The people who have subscribed to the show the
- 7:28people who have been loyal listeners the new
- 7:30people who have just got on board They're getting
- 7:32that notification going Oh a new episode right
- 7:34the heart of rural America comes out on Wednesdays
- 7:37I'm gonna listen to this and the new listeners
- 7:39are gonna get basically a fresh episode because
- 7:41they probably haven't gone this far far back
- 7:43and heard these episodes, the old listeners might
- 7:46get to revisit something and learn something
- 7:48that they didn't catch on the first time around.
- 7:50And it's just staying top of mind for people.
- 7:52It's just staying in their feeds, which is super
- 7:55important because you want to build those relationships.
- 7:57You want to build trust. You want to be part
- 7:59of your listeners weekly listening. So it's just
- 8:03a really good way to stay top of mind without
- 8:06having to create a brand new episode. on the
- 8:09fly at the last minute, stressing yourself out,
- 8:12stressing your producer out. Like it is just
- 8:14an easy way to stay relevant in people's feeds
- 8:17and ready to rock. So I mentioned at the start
- 8:19of this episode that there's a celebrity doing
- 8:21this as well with their podcast right now. I
- 8:23noticed Amy Poehler is doing this. Yes, Golden
- 8:26Globe winner for podcasting, Amy Poehler is doing
- 8:29replay episodes of her podcast. Now they're not
- 8:32necessarily like full blown replay episodes.
- 8:35Instead, she is doing basically like a clip show.
- 8:38So she has done different categories of like,
- 8:40she always asks her guests what they're laughing
- 8:42at these days. So she made like a big montage
- 8:45of what her guests said they were laughing at.
- 8:47She did one that was a montage of people sharing
- 8:49SNL memories. So when she would talk to someone
- 8:52on her show from SNL and they'd tell a story,
- 8:54she pulled all those clips and put them together
- 8:57in a new episode of basically just highlights
- 9:00from the show. It's pretty sweet and it takes
- 9:03a lot of time. I will warn you that if you want
- 9:05to do this as like your replay episodes or as
- 9:08a new episode, you're going to have to be pretty
- 9:10diligent about it. And I would honestly just
- 9:12start keeping a ongoing folder of like highlights
- 9:16and clips as you're editing episodes. Like if
- 9:18you think, oh, this is a great standout moment,
- 9:20cut that part out, throw it in a folder somewhere.
- 9:23And then the easiest thing would be to go and
- 9:25grab those clips and mash them all together.
- 9:28If you're starting this from scratch and you're
- 9:29like, oh, yeah, I don't have an episode for next
- 9:31week I want to do a clip show honestly you'll
- 9:34probably spend more time trying to make a clip
- 9:36show from old episodes than you would just sitting
- 9:38down to record a fresh one so if this is something
- 9:40that piqued your interest you're like I would
- 9:42like to do a clip show highlight reel that sort
- 9:44of thing someday start saving those clips now
- 9:47because it is a labor of love but Amy Poehler
- 9:52is even doing it Amy Poehler even needs a break
- 9:54from podcasting she's only been doing it a year
- 9:56she won an award for it but You still need a
- 9:59break sometimes. Life gets busy. Life gets chaotic.
- 10:02And when you need a break, you should be able
- 10:04to take one. And there's definitely ways to do
- 10:06that. The last thing I want to mention is that
- 10:08you probably have a bunch of content that you
- 10:10have not shared from old episodes. How many of
- 10:13us have made reels and posts and Pinterest pins
- 10:17and blogs for podcast episodes, but we haven't
- 10:20shared them anywhere. They just sit in a void
- 10:22waiting for us to share them. And we just never
- 10:24do. So if you need a break from podcasting, just
- 10:27go and share those clips. that you already have
- 10:29made and never got around to posting on social
- 10:31media because chances are good if you didn't
- 10:33share it no one found the episode so share it
- 10:35with the link to the episode boom fresh content
- 10:38ready to go might not seem fresh to you, but
- 10:40it's gonna be fresh to your audience. So make
- 10:42sure that you're sharing all that social media
- 10:44goodness that you're creating to promote your
- 10:46show. So that's all I got for you this week.
- 10:47Thank you so much for tuning into another episode
