- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. OK, how many of you have heard
- 0:32of the theory of an ear worm? You know, we all have heard them
- 0:37in the in the out in the real world.
- 0:38But when you really think of what is an ear worm, well,
- 0:41basically an ear worm is a song that gets stuck in your head and
- 0:45obviously through hearing and it stays with you and you can't get
- 0:49it out. And I apologize for the fact
- 0:51that I'm going to even mention the words Baby Shark, but we all
- 0:55know that song over years is the most annoying song.
- 1:00But babies love it. And we all say Oh my gosh, I
- 1:04don't even understand why. Why does the baby love it so
- 1:07much? And we've had other songs that
- 1:09get stuck in our head. There was a whole Seinfeld
- 1:11episode about a song being stuck in in George's head and how
- 1:16Jerry kept telling him it was going to make him insane and how
- 1:19this happens to us. Well, you have to realize there
- 1:23is a plan in that. And part of that plan when they
- 1:26create an ear worm is repetition, repetition,
- 1:31repetition. Why repetition?
- 1:33Because the brain learns and remembers through repetition.
- 1:37That's why there's always a chorus in a song.
- 1:41So when we why do we love music as human beings, why are we so
- 1:44drawn to it? Because of the repetition.
- 1:47And there's an art to repetition.
- 1:49There's an art to making it happen, which is why music is so
- 1:53important to all of us because the, the melody, the, the, the
- 1:56pace, the tone, all of it matters.
- 1:59And a big, huge part of it is repetition.
- 2:03So let's stop and pause for a second here and think about
- 2:07this. If an ear worm can start because
- 2:10of a song, you know, like when you get back to baby shark God,
- 2:15that song, we all know, it gets in there instant.
- 2:20It's catchy, it has a phrase, a hook.
- 2:22We we get pulled into it and then it and it runs.
- 2:27Every great writer who writes music understands this and they
- 2:33look for it. They make it into their music
- 2:37because they want you to remember their music, even if
- 2:39you can just remember the chorus.
- 2:41So why is that important to us? Well, when you recognize that
- 2:45the brain learns through repetition.
- 2:47When you recognize that the brain loves repetition, that's
- 2:52why we are creatures of habit. We all know it.
- 2:54We all say we have our habits. It's why if you paid attention
- 2:57and you brush your teeth in the morning, you always start on the
- 3:00same side. When you get in the shower, you
- 3:03wash the same way. You wash your body in the same
- 3:06patterns. When you put socks on, you put
- 3:08them on the same way. When you get dressed, you get
- 3:10dressed the same way. We have patterns and remember
- 3:15the old phrase, I got up on the wrong side of the bed?
- 3:18Well, that's because we have a habit of where we get up and if
- 3:22we have something throws us off, we have a bad morning or
- 3:26something throws us out of our pattern.
- 3:28That's when we start to go awry. Now, all of this, including the
- 3:33earworm, is so important to us because when we are talking to
- 3:36ourselves, we are repeating. Most of the time we are
- 3:40repeating the wrong things. And if we can remember to ask
- 3:45ourselves the very important distinct question of am I giving
- 3:48myself the right information right now, or am I repeating the
- 3:52wrong things? Am I repeating the things I
- 3:54don't want to repeat to myself? Super important question.
- 3:59Because if we're saying to ourselves, oh, I'm just dumb,
- 4:01nothing's going to work. I don't understand why this
- 4:04didn't work and we just keep looping.
- 4:08We're not going to get anywhere. We're going to have the same
- 4:10problems over and over and over again because we are in that
- 4:14loop that the ear worm creates and we're building it for
- 4:17ourselves. So we've become our own internal
- 4:20ear worm and we have to stop it, which is why breaking the
- 4:25phrases is so important, which is why rhyming is so important.
- 4:30So if you have mantras or you have affirmations that you've
- 4:35made for yourself and you know, we've talked about these many
- 4:37times over the years together, but it does help if you create
- 4:41rhyming ones. It does help if you have a
- 4:44phrase that's why in the in the bus book and who's driving your
- 4:48bus, there's that phrase that says stop, reflect, choose,
- 4:52redirect. It rhymes.
- 4:54It rhymes for a reason. That was an actual planned thing
- 4:58that it rhymed easier to remember earworm, earworm,
- 5:02earworm. So create your own earworms in
- 5:05your own patterns and you're going to start to see a
- 5:07distinction. And this was, this is really
- 5:09funny because I will tell you I do not.
- 5:12I've written children's books that rhyme and I love rhyming.
- 5:15I obsessed with Doctor Seuss, but guess what?
- 5:19I don't have mantras that rhyme. And I was going through some old
- 5:22stuff, listening to the power of Auto suggestion by an old French
- 5:28author. And Emil Cote, I think it's how
- 5:31you say his last name. I probably butchered it, but in
- 5:34any event, and and was this is where this got all prompted from
- 5:38auto suggestion. And I had this random thought
- 5:41about, I wonder why none of it rhymes because that would be so
- 5:45much better. And then I started doing some
- 5:47research and ran into a bunch of stuff again about the power of
- 5:51the ear worm. And I was like, OK, I need to go
- 5:53rewrite mine some of them and I want to make them rhyme.
- 5:56So here's an assignment if you would care to indulge me.
- 6:01Go look at your mantras and see how you can make them rhyme.
- 6:04Even if you get just one phrase that like feels like you can
- 6:08make it rhyme and create your own ear worm.
- 6:11See how it goes because I'm going to be doing the same thing
- 6:14this week. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:16you have a blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:19Bye.
