- 0:00Speaker 1: First Nephi, chapter five. And it came to pass that
- 0:05Speaker 1: after we had come down into the wilderness unto our father, behold,
- 0:09Speaker 1: he was filled with joy. And also my mother Soria
- 0:12Speaker 1: was exceedingly glad, for she truly had mourned because of us,
- 0:17Speaker 1: for she had supposed that we had perished in the wilderness.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And she also had complained against my father, telling him
- 0:23Speaker 1: that he was a visionary man, saying, behold, thou hast
- 0:27Speaker 1: led us forth from the land of our inheritance, and
- 0:30Speaker 1: my sons are no more, and we perish in the wilderness.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And after this manner of language had my mother complained
- 0:37Speaker 1: against my father, and it had come to pass that
- 0:41Speaker 1: my father spake unto her, saying, I know that I
- 0:44Speaker 1: am a visionary man. For if I had not seen
- 0:47Speaker 1: the things of God in a vision, I should not
- 0:49Speaker 1: have known the goodness of God, but had tarried at
- 0:52Speaker 1: Jerusalem and had perished with my brethren. But behold, I
- 0:57Speaker 1: have obtained a land of promise in the which things
- 1:00Speaker 1: I do rejoice yea. And I know that the Lord
- 1:03Speaker 1: would deliver my sons out of the hands of Laban
- 1:06Speaker 1: and bring them down again unto us in the wilderness,
- 1:10Speaker 1: And after this manner of language did my father Lehi
- 1:14Speaker 1: comfort my mother Syria concerning us while we journeyed in
- 1:17Speaker 1: the wilderness up to the land of Jerusalem to obtain
- 1:21Speaker 1: the record of the Jews. And when we had returned
- 1:24Speaker 1: to the tent of my father, behold, their joy was full,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and my mother was comforted, and she spake, saying, now
- 1:32Speaker 1: I know of a surety that the Lord Hath commanded
- 1:35Speaker 1: my husband to flee into the wilderness yea. And I
- 1:38Speaker 1: also know of a surety that the Lord Hath protected
- 1:41Speaker 1: my sons and delivered them out of the hands of Laban,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and given them power whereby they could accomplish the thing
- 1:48Speaker 1: which the Lord Hath commanded them. And after this manner
- 1:51Speaker 1: of language did she speak. And it came to pass
- 1:55Speaker 1: that they did rejoice exceedingly, and did offer sacrifice and
- 1:58Speaker 1: burnt offerings unto the Lord Lord, and they gave thanks
- 2:01Speaker 1: unto the God of Israel. And after they had given
- 2:05Speaker 1: thanks unto the God of Israel, my father Lehi took
- 2:09Speaker 1: the records which were engraven upon the plates of Bras,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and he did search them from the beginning, and he
- 2:15Speaker 1: beheld that they did contain the five books of Moses,
- 2:18Speaker 1: which gave an account of the creation of the world,
- 2:20Speaker 1: and also of Adam and Eve, who were our first parents,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and also a record of the Jews from the beginning
- 2:26Speaker 1: even down to the commencement of the reign of Zedekiah,
- 2:29Speaker 1: King of Judah, and also the prophecies of the Holy
- 2:33Speaker 1: prophets from the beginning even down to the commencement of
- 2:36Speaker 1: the reign Zedekiah, and also many prophecies which have been
- 2:39Speaker 1: spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah. And it came to
- 2:43Speaker 1: pass that my father Lehi also found upon the plates
- 2:47Speaker 1: of Bras a genealogy of his father's wherefore he knew
- 2:51Speaker 1: that he was a descendant of Joseph yea, even that Joseph,
- 2:55Speaker 1: who was the son of Jacob, who was sold into Egypt,
- 2:58Speaker 1: and who was preserved by the hand of the Lord,
- 3:00Speaker 1: that he might preserve his father, Jacob and all his
- 3:02Speaker 1: household from perishing with famine. And they were also led
- 3:07Speaker 1: out of captivity and out of the land of Egypt
- 3:09Speaker 1: by that same God who had preserved them. And thus
- 3:13Speaker 1: my father Lehi did discover the genealogy of his fathers.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And Laban also was a descendant of Joseph, wherefore he
- 3:20Speaker 1: and his fathers had kept the records. And now when
- 3:26Speaker 1: my father saw all these things, he was filled with
- 3:29Speaker 1: the spirit and began to prophesy concerning his seed, that
- 3:32Speaker 1: these plates of brass should go forth unto all nations, kindreds, tongues,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and people who were of his seed. Wherefore he said
- 3:40Speaker 1: that these plates of brass should never perish, neither should
- 3:43Speaker 1: they be dimmed any more by time. And he prophesied
- 3:47Speaker 1: many things concerning his seed. And it came to pass
- 3:51Speaker 1: that thus far I and my father had kept the
- 3:53Speaker 1: commandments wherewith the Lord had commanded us, and we had
- 3:56Speaker 1: obtained the records which the Lord had commanded us and them,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and found that they were desirable, yea, even of great
- 4:03Speaker 1: worth unto us, insomuch that we could preserve the commandments
- 4:06Speaker 1: of the Lord unto our children. Wherefore it was wisdom
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the Lord that we should carry them with us
- 4:13Speaker 1: as we journeyed in the wilderness towards the land of Promise.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Chapter six. And now, I, Nephi, do not give the
- 4:23Speaker 1: genealogy of my fathers in this part of my record,
- 4:26Speaker 1: neither at any time shall I give it after upon
- 4:29Speaker 1: these plates which I am writing, For it is given
- 4:31Speaker 1: in the record which has been kept by my father.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Wherefore I do not write it in this work, for
- 4:37Speaker 1: it sufficeth me to say that we are descendants of Joseph.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And it mattereth not to me that I am particular
- 4:43Speaker 1: to give a full account of all the things of
- 4:45Speaker 1: my father, for they cannot be written upon these plates.
- 4:48Speaker 1: For I desire the room that I may write of
- 4:50Speaker 1: the things of God. For the fullness of mine intent
- 4:54Speaker 1: is that I may persuade men to come unto the
- 4:56Speaker 1: God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the
- 4:59Speaker 1: God of Jacob, and be saved. Wherefore, the things which
- 5:03Speaker 1: are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but
- 5:06Speaker 1: the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those
- 5:08Speaker 1: who are not of the world. Wherefore I shall give
- 5:12Speaker 1: commandment unto my seed, that they shall not occupy these
- 5:14Speaker 1: plates which things which are not of worth unto the
- 5:17Speaker 1: children of men. Chapter seven. And now I would that
- 5:23Speaker 1: ye might know that after my father Lehi had made
- 5:26Speaker 1: an end of prophesying concerning his seed, it came to
- 5:29Speaker 1: pass that the Lord spake unto him again, saying that
- 5:32Speaker 1: it was not meet for him Lehi, that he should
- 5:35Speaker 1: take his family into the wilderness alone, but that his
- 5:38Speaker 1: sons should take daughters to wife, that they might raise
- 5:41Speaker 1: up seed unto the Lord in the land of Promise.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Lord commanded him
- 5:47Speaker 1: that I Nephi and my brethren should again return unto
- 5:51Speaker 1: the land of Jerusalem and bring down Ishmael and his
- 5:54Speaker 1: family into the wilderness. And it came to pass that
- 5:58Speaker 1: I Nephi did again, with my brethren, go forth into
- 6:01Speaker 1: the wilderness to go up to Jerusalem. And it came
- 6:05Speaker 1: to pass that we went up unto the house of Ishmael,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and we did gain favor in the sight of Ishmael,
- 6:10Speaker 1: insomuch that we did speak unto him the words of
- 6:12Speaker 1: the Lord. And it came to pass that the Lord
- 6:16Speaker 1: did soften the heart of Ishmael and also his household,
- 6:19Speaker 1: insomuch that they took their journey with us down into
- 6:21Speaker 1: the wilderness to the tent of our father. And it
- 6:25Speaker 1: came to pass that as we journeyed in the wilderness,
- 6:28Speaker 1: behold Laymen and Lemuel, and two of the daughters of Ishmael,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and the two sons of Ishmael, and their families did
- 6:34Speaker 1: rebel against us, yea against me Nephi and Sam and
- 6:39Speaker 1: their father Ishmael, and his wife and his three other daughters.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And it came to pass in the which rebellion they
- 6:45Speaker 1: were desirous to return unto the land of Jerusalem. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: now I, Nephi, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts,
- 6:53Speaker 1: Therefore I spake unto them, saying, yea, even unto laymen
- 6:58Speaker 1: and unto Lemuel. Behold, ye are mine elder brethren. And
- 7:02Speaker 1: how is it that ye are so hard in your
- 7:03Speaker 1: hearts and so blind in your minds, that ye have
- 7:06Speaker 1: need that I, your younger brother, should speak unto you, yea,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and set an example for you. How is it that
- 7:13Speaker 1: ye have not hearkened unto the word of the Lord.
- 7:16Speaker 1: How is it that ye have forgotten that ye have
- 7:18Speaker 1: seen an angel of the Lord? Yea? And how is
- 7:21Speaker 1: it that ye have forgotten what great things the Lord
- 7:23Speaker 1: hath done for us in delivering us out of the
- 7:26Speaker 1: hands of Laban, and also that we should obtain the record? Yea?
- 7:31Speaker 1: And how is it that ye have forgotten that the
- 7:33Speaker 1: Lord is able to do all things according to his
- 7:36Speaker 1: will for the children of men, If it so be
- 7:39Speaker 1: that they exercise faith in him. Wherefore, let us be
- 7:42Speaker 1: faithful to him. And if it be so that we
- 7:45Speaker 1: are faithful to him, we shall obtain the Land of Promise.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And ye shall know at some future period that the
- 7:51Speaker 1: word of the Lord shall be fulfilled concerning the destruction
- 7:54Speaker 1: of Jerusalem. For all things which the Lord hath spoken
- 7:57Speaker 1: concerning the destruction of Jerusalem must be fulfilled. For behold,
- 8:03Speaker 1: the spirit of the Lord ceaseth soon to strive with them.
- 8:06Speaker 1: For behold, they have rejected the Prophets and Jeremiah, have
- 8:09Speaker 1: they cast into prison, and they have sought to take
- 8:12Speaker 1: away the life of my father in so much that
- 8:14Speaker 1: they have driven him out of the land. Now behold,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I say unto you that if ye will return unto Jerusalem,
- 8:22Speaker 1: ye shall also perish with them. And now, if ye
- 8:25Speaker 1: have choice, go up to the land, and remember the
- 8:28Speaker 1: words which I speak unto you, that if ye go,
- 8:31Speaker 1: ye will also perish. For thus the spirit of the
- 8:34Speaker 1: Lord constraineth me that I should speak. And it came
- 8:38Speaker 1: to pass that when I Nephi had spoken these words
- 8:41Speaker 1: unto my brethren, they were angry with me. And it
- 8:44Speaker 1: came to pass that they did lay their hands upon me.
- 8:46Speaker 1: For behold, they were exceedingly wroth, and they did bind
- 8:50Speaker 1: me with cords, for they sought to take away my life,
- 8:53Speaker 1: that they might leave me in the wilderness to be
- 8:54Speaker 1: devoured by wild beasts. But it came to pass that
- 8:58Speaker 1: I prayed unto the Lord, saying, O, Lord, according to
- 9:02Speaker 1: my faith, which is in thee wilt thou deliver me
- 9:05Speaker 1: from the hands of my brethren. Yea, even give me
- 9:08Speaker 1: strength that I may burst these bands with which I
- 9:10Speaker 1: am bound. And it came to pass that when I
- 9:14Speaker 1: had said these words, behold, the bands were loosed from
- 9:17Speaker 1: off my hands and feet. And I stood before my brethren,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and I spake unto them again. And it came to
- 9:23Speaker 1: pass that they were angry with me again and sought
- 9:25Speaker 1: to lay hands upon me. But behold, one of the
- 9:28Speaker 1: daughters of Ishmael Yea, and also her mother, and one
- 9:31Speaker 1: of the sons of Ishmael, did plead with my brethren,
- 9:33Speaker 1: insomuch that they did soften their hearts, and they did
- 9:36Speaker 1: cease striving to take away my life. And it came
- 9:40Speaker 1: to pass that they were sorrowful because of their wickedness,
- 9:43Speaker 1: insomuch that they did bow down before me and did
- 9:45Speaker 1: plead with me that I would forgive them of the
- 9:47Speaker 1: thing that they had done against me. And it came
- 9:50Speaker 1: to pass that I did frankly forgive them all that
- 9:53Speaker 1: they had done, and I did exhort them that they
- 9:55Speaker 1: would pray unto the Lord their God for forgiveness. And
- 9:59Speaker 1: it came to pass that they did so. And after
- 10:01Speaker 1: they had done praying unto the Lord, we did again
- 10:04Speaker 1: travel on our journey toward the tent of our father.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And it came to pass that we did come down
- 10:09Speaker 1: unto the tent of our father. And after I and
- 10:12Speaker 1: my brethren and all the house of Ishmael had come
- 10:14Speaker 1: down unto the tent of my father, they did give
- 10:17Speaker 1: thanks unto the Lord their God, and they did offer
- 10:19Speaker 1: sacrifice and burnt offerings unto him. Chapter eight. And it
- 10:26Speaker 1: came to pass that we had gathered together all manner
- 10:28Speaker 1: of seeds of every kind, both of grain of every kind,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and also of the seeds of fruit of every kind.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And it came to pass that while my father tarried
- 10:37Speaker 1: in the wilderness, he spake unto us, saying, behold, I
- 10:40Speaker 1: have dreamed a dream, or in other words, I have
- 10:42Speaker 1: seen a vision. And behold, because of the thing which
- 10:46Speaker 1: I have seen, I have reason to rejoice in the
- 10:49Speaker 1: Lord because of Nephi and also of sam, for I
- 10:52Speaker 1: have reason to suppose that they and also many of
- 10:54Speaker 1: their seed, will be saved. But behold, Layman and Lemuel,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I feared exceedingly because of you. For behold, methought. I
- 11:02Speaker 1: saw in my dream a dark and dreary wilderness. And
- 11:06Speaker 1: it came to pass that I saw a man, and
- 11:08Speaker 1: he was dressed in a white robe. And he came
- 11:10Speaker 1: and stood before me. And it came to pass that
- 11:13Speaker 1: he spake unto me and bade me follow him. And
- 11:17Speaker 1: it came to pass that as I followed him, I
- 11:18Speaker 1: beheld myself that I was in a dark and dreary waste.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And after I had traveled for the space of many
- 11:24Speaker 1: hours in the darkness, I began to pray unto the
- 11:27Speaker 1: Lord that he would have mercy on me according to
- 11:29Speaker 1: the multitude of his tender mercies. And it came to
- 11:33Speaker 1: pass after I had prayed unto the Lord, I beheld
- 11:35Speaker 1: a large and spacious field. And it came to pass
- 11:39Speaker 1: that I beheld a tree whose fruit was desirable to
- 11:41Speaker 1: make one happy. And it came to pass that I
- 11:45Speaker 1: did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof, and
- 11:48Speaker 1: I beheld that it was most sweet above all that
- 11:50Speaker 1: I have ever before tasted. Yea, And I beheld that
- 11:54Speaker 1: the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the whiteness
- 11:57Speaker 1: that I had ever seen. And as I par took
- 12:00Speaker 1: of the fruit thereof, it filled my soul with exceedingly
- 12:03Speaker 1: great joy. Wherefore I began to be desirous that my
- 12:06Speaker 1: family should partake of it also, for I knew that
- 12:09Speaker 1: it was desirable above all other fruit. And as I
- 12:13Speaker 1: cast my eyes round about, that perhaps I might discover
- 12:15Speaker 1: my family, also, I beheld a river of water, and
- 12:19Speaker 1: it ran along, and it was near the tree of
- 12:21Speaker 1: which I was partaking the fruit. And I looked to
- 12:24Speaker 1: behold from whence it came, and I saw the head thereof,
- 12:27Speaker 1: a little way off, And at the head thereof I
- 12:29Speaker 1: beheld your mother, Syria, and Sam and Nephi, and they
- 12:33Speaker 1: stood as if they knew not whither they should go.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And it came to pass that I beckoned unto them,
- 12:40Speaker 1: and I also did say unto them with a loud voice,
- 12:42Speaker 1: that they should come unto me and partake of the
- 12:44Speaker 1: fruit which was desirable above all other fruit. And it
- 12:48Speaker 1: came to pass that they did come unto me and
- 12:50Speaker 1: partake of the fruit also. And it came to pass
- 12:53Speaker 1: that I was desirous that Layman and Lemuel should come
- 12:56Speaker 1: and partake of the fruit also, Wherefore I cast mine
- 12:59Speaker 1: eyes towards the head of the river, that perhaps I
- 13:01Speaker 1: might see them. And it came to pass that I
- 13:04Speaker 1: saw them, but they would not come unto me and
- 13:06Speaker 1: partake of the fruit. And I beheld a rod of iron,
- 13:10Speaker 1: and it extended along the bank of the river and
- 13:12Speaker 1: led to the tree by which I stood. And I
- 13:15Speaker 1: also beheld a straight and narrow path which came along
- 13:18Speaker 1: by the rod of iron, even to the tree by
- 13:20Speaker 1: which I stood. And it also led by the head
- 13:23Speaker 1: of the fountain unto a large and spacious field, as
- 13:26Speaker 1: if it had been a world. And I saw numberless
- 13:29Speaker 1: concourses of people, many of whom were pressing forward that
- 13:33Speaker 1: they might obtain the path which led unto the tree
- 13:35Speaker 1: by which I stood. And it came to pass that
- 13:38Speaker 1: they did come forth and commence in the path which
- 13:40Speaker 1: led to the tree. And it came to pass that
- 13:43Speaker 1: there arose a mist of darkness, yea even an exceedingly
- 13:47Speaker 1: great mist of darkness, insomuch that they who had commenced
- 13:50Speaker 1: in the path did lose their way, that they wandered
- 13:53Speaker 1: off and were lost. And it came to pass that
- 13:56Speaker 1: I beheld others pressing forward, And they came forth and
- 13:59Speaker 1: caught hold of the end of the rod of iron.
- 14:01Speaker 1: And they did press forward through the mist of darkness,
- 14:04Speaker 1: clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did
- 14:06Speaker 1: come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And after they had partaken of the fruit of the tree,
- 14:12Speaker 1: they did cast their eyes about, as if they were ashamed.
- 14:16Speaker 1: And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld
- 14:19Speaker 1: on the other side of the river of water a
- 14:21Speaker 1: great and spacious building. And it stood, as it were,
- 14:24Speaker 1: in the air, high above the earth. And it was
- 14:28Speaker 1: filled with people, both old and young, both male and female,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine. And they
- 14:35Speaker 1: were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers
- 14:37Speaker 1: towards those who had come at and were partaking of
- 14:39Speaker 1: the fruit. And after they had tasted of the fruit,
- 14:43Speaker 1: they were ashamed because of those that were scoffing at them.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And now I, Nephi, do not speak all the words
- 14:52Speaker 1: of my father, but to be short and writing. Behold,
- 14:56Speaker 1: he saw other multitudes pressing forward, and they came and
- 14:59Speaker 1: caught hold of the end of the rod of iron.
- 15:01Speaker 1: And they did press their way forward, continually holding fast
- 15:04Speaker 1: to the rod of iron, until they came forth and
- 15:06Speaker 1: fell down and partook of the fruit of the tree.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And he also saw other multitudes feeling their way towards
- 15:12Speaker 1: that great and spacious building. And it came to pass
- 15:16Speaker 1: that many were drowned in the depths of the fountain,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and many were lost from his view, wandering in strange roads.
- 15:22Speaker 1: And great was the multitude that did enter into that
- 15:25Speaker 1: strange building. And after they did enter into that building,
- 15:28Speaker 1: they did point the finger of scorn at me, and
- 15:30Speaker 1: those that were partaking of the fruit also, But we
- 15:33Speaker 1: heeded them. Not these are the words of my father,
- 15:37Speaker 1: for as many as heeded them had fallen away, and
- 15:41Speaker 1: Layman and Lemuel partook not of the fruit, said my father.
- 15:45Speaker 1: And it came to pass after my father had spoken
- 15:48Speaker 1: all the words of his dream or vision, which were many,
- 15:50Speaker 1: he said unto us. Because of these things which he
- 15:52Speaker 1: saw in a vision, he exceedingly feared for Layman and Lemuel,
- 15:56Speaker 1: yea he feared lest they should be cast off from
- 15:59Speaker 1: the presence of the Lafe. And he did exhort them then,
- 16:02Speaker 1: with all the feeling of a tender parent, that they
- 16:04Speaker 1: would hearken to his words, that perhaps the Lord would
- 16:07Speaker 1: be merciful to them and not cast them off. Yea,
- 16:10Speaker 1: my father did preach unto them. And after he had
- 16:13Speaker 1: preached unto them, and also prophesied unto them of many things,
- 16:17Speaker 1: he bade them to keep the commandments of the Lord,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and he did cease speaking unto them Chapter nine. And
- 16:26Speaker 1: all these things did my father see and hear and speak,
- 16:29Speaker 1: as he dwelt in a tent in the valley of Lemuel.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And also a great many more things which cannot be
- 16:34Speaker 1: written upon these plates. And now as I have spoken
- 16:37Speaker 1: concerning these plates, behold, they are not the plates upon
- 16:40Speaker 1: which I make a full account of the history of
- 16:42Speaker 1: my people. For the plates upon which I make a
- 16:44Speaker 1: full account of my people I have given the name
- 16:46Speaker 1: of Nephi. Wherefore they are called the plates of Nephi,
- 16:50Speaker 1: after mine own name. And these plates are also called
- 16:53Speaker 1: the plates of Nephi. Nevertheless, I have received a commandment
- 16:57Speaker 1: of the Lord that I should make these plates for
- 16:59Speaker 1: the special purpose that there should be an account engraven
- 17:02Speaker 1: of the ministry of my people. Upon the other plates
- 17:05Speaker 1: should be engraven an account of the reign of the
- 17:07Speaker 1: kings and the wars and contentions of my people. Wherefore
- 17:11Speaker 1: these plates are for the more part of the ministry,
- 17:13Speaker 1: and the other plates are for the more part of
- 17:15Speaker 1: the reign of kings and the wars and contentions of
- 17:18Speaker 1: my people. Wherefore the Lord hath commanded me to make
- 17:22Speaker 1: these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose
- 17:25Speaker 1: I know not. But the Lord knoweth all things from
- 17:28Speaker 1: the beginning. Wherefore he prepareth a way to accomplish all
- 17:31Speaker 1: his works among the children of men. For behold, he
- 17:34Speaker 1: hath all power under the fulfilling of all his words.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And thus it is Amen Chapter ten. And now I, Nephi,
- 17:44Speaker 1: proceed to give an account upon these plates of my
- 17:46Speaker 1: proceedings and my reign and ministry. Wherefore, to proceed with
- 17:50Speaker 1: mine account, I must speak somewhat of the things of
- 17:52Speaker 1: my father and also of my brethren. For behold, it
- 17:56Speaker 1: came to pass after my father had made an end
- 17:58Speaker 1: of speaking the words of his dream, and also of
- 18:01Speaker 1: exhorting them to all diligence. He spake unto them concerning
- 18:04Speaker 1: the Jews, that after they should be destroyed even that
- 18:07Speaker 1: great city Jerusalem, and many be carried away captive into Babylon.
- 18:11Speaker 1: According to the own due time of the Lord, they
- 18:14Speaker 1: should return again, Yea, even be brought back out of captivity.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And after they should be brought back out of captivity,
- 18:20Speaker 1: they should possess again the land of their inheritance. Yea,
- 18:25Speaker 1: even six hundred years from the time that my father
- 18:27Speaker 1: left Jerusalem a prophet, would the Lord God raise up
- 18:30Speaker 1: among the Jews, even a messiah, or in other words,
- 18:33Speaker 1: a savior of the world. And he also spake concerning
- 18:37Speaker 1: the prophets, how great a number had testified of these things,
- 18:40Speaker 1: concerning this Messiah of whom he had spoken, or this
- 18:43Speaker 1: redeemer of the world. Wherefore all mankind were in a
- 18:47Speaker 1: lost and in a fallen state, and ever would be save,
- 18:50Speaker 1: they should rely on this redeemer. And he spake also
- 18:54Speaker 1: concerning a prophet who should come before the Messiah to
- 18:56Speaker 1: prepare the way of the Lord. Yea, even he should
- 18:59Speaker 1: go forth in crying the wilderness, prepare ye the way
- 19:02Speaker 1: of the Lord, and make his paths straight. For there
- 19:05Speaker 1: standeth one among you whom ye know not, and he
- 19:07Speaker 1: is mightier than I, whose shoes latchet I am not
- 19:10Speaker 1: worthy to unloose. And much spake my father concerning this thing.
- 19:15Speaker 1: And my father said he should baptize in Bethabara, beyond Jordan.
- 19:19Speaker 1: And he also said he should baptize with water, even
- 19:22Speaker 1: that he should baptize the Messiah with water. And after
- 19:26Speaker 1: he had baptized the Messiah with water, he should behold
- 19:29Speaker 1: and bear record that he had baptized the Lamb of God,
- 19:31Speaker 1: who should take away the sins of the world. And
- 19:35Speaker 1: it came to pass after my father had spoken these words,
- 19:38Speaker 1: he spake unto my brethren concerning the gospel which should
- 19:41Speaker 1: be preached among the Jews, and also concerning the dwindling
- 19:44Speaker 1: of the Jews in unbelief, and after they had slain
- 19:47Speaker 1: the Messiah, who should come, and after he had been slain,
- 19:50Speaker 1: he should rise from the dead and should make himself
- 19:52Speaker 1: manifest by the Holy Ghost. Unto the Gentiles. Yea, even
- 19:57Speaker 1: my father spake much concerning the Gentiles, and also concerning
- 20:01Speaker 1: the House of Israel, that they should be compared like
- 20:03Speaker 1: unto an olive tree, whose branches should be broken off
- 20:06Speaker 1: and should be scattered upon all the face of the earth.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Wherefore he said, it must needs be that we should
- 20:12Speaker 1: be led with one accord into the land of Promise,
- 20:15Speaker 1: unto the fulfilling of the word of the Lord, that
- 20:18Speaker 1: we should be scattered upon all the face of the earth.
- 20:21Speaker 1: And after the House of Israel should be scattered, they
- 20:23Speaker 1: should be gathered together again or in fine after the
- 20:26Speaker 1: Gentiles had received the fullness of the Gospel, the natural
- 20:30Speaker 1: branches of the olive tree, or the remnants of the
- 20:32Speaker 1: House of Israel should be grafted in or come to
- 20:35Speaker 1: the knowledge of the True Messiah, their Lord and their Redeemer.
- 20:39Speaker 1: And after this manner of language did my father prophesy
- 20:42Speaker 1: and speak unto my brethren. And also many more things
- 20:45Speaker 1: which I do not write in this book, for I
- 20:47Speaker 1: have written as many of them as were expedient for
- 20:49Speaker 1: me in another book. And all these things of which
- 20:52Speaker 1: I have spoken were done as my father dwelt in
- 20:55Speaker 1: a tent in the valley of Lemuel. And it came
- 20:59Speaker 1: to pass after I Nephi, having heard all the words
- 21:02Speaker 1: of my father concerning the things which he saw in
- 21:04Speaker 1: a vision, and also the things which he spake by
- 21:07Speaker 1: the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received
- 21:10Speaker 1: by faith on the son of God. And the Son
- 21:12Speaker 1: of God was the Messiah who should come. I Nephi
- 21:16Speaker 1: was desirous also that I might see and hear and
- 21:18Speaker 1: know of these things by the power of the Holy Ghost,
- 21:21Speaker 1: which is the gift of God unto all those who
- 21:23Speaker 1: diligently seek Him, as well in times of old as
- 21:26Speaker 1: in the time, that He should manifest himself unto the
- 21:28Speaker 1: children of men. For He is the same yesterday to
- 21:32Speaker 1: day and forever, and the waves prepared for all men
- 21:35Speaker 1: from the foundation of the world. If it so be
- 21:38Speaker 1: that they repent and come unto Him, for he that
- 21:42Speaker 1: diligently seeketh shall find, and the mysteries of God shall
- 21:45Speaker 1: be unfolded unto them by the power of the Holy Ghost,
- 21:48Speaker 1: as well in these times as in times of old,
- 21:51Speaker 1: and as well in times of old as in times
- 21:53Speaker 1: to come. Wherefore the course of the Lord is one
- 21:56Speaker 1: eternal round. Therefore, remember, o man, for all thy doings,
- 22:01Speaker 1: thou shalt be brought into judgment. Wherefore, if ye have
- 22:04Speaker 1: sought to do wickedly in the days of your probation,
- 22:07Speaker 1: then ye are found unclean before the judgment seat of God.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And no unclean thing can dwell with God. Wherefore ye
- 22:14Speaker 1: must be cast off forever. And the Holy Ghost giveth
- 22:18Speaker 1: authority that I should speak these things and deny them not.
- 22:23Speaker 1: End of First Nephi, chapters five to eleven.
