- 3:29Wet Dreams. The title speaks of the book itself. So if you
- 3:35know me, you know I love to read erotica. That is one of
- 3:38my favorite genres. Don't judge me, don't judge me, Okay, But
- 3:46this book, Wet Dreams, of the book of poetry about this author and
- 3:50her journey of her life in that little realm. That's all we're gonna say
- 3:54tonight. Y'all gonna have to tune in next week to get the insight on
- 4:01the Wet Dreams. But remember that because at the end of this broadcast,
- 4:06I'm gonna tell you how you can possibly win your own copy of Wet Dreams
- 4:13by author Nicole Okay, So let's bring her up. Come on up,
- 4:17girly, come on up and join us. Hi, Hey are you I'm
- 4:26good? How are you? I am good? I am good? Welcome
- 4:31to sc Book Galas and friends. So we always start off. You have
- 4:36to tell everybody a little bit about yourself. So go ahead and tell us
- 4:40Hi, Hi, everyone. My name is author Nicole as Brown. I'm
- 4:44the owner and operator Poetry at Best Well we literally serve you the best.
- 4:47And it started here in Baton Rouge, but I'm a native of Monroe,
- 4:51Louisiana, which is a three hour drive away from Baton Rouge. I have
- 4:57a total of fifteen books right now, and I'm still working on more books
- 5:03as I speak. Sixteen, seventeenth, and eighteen simultaneously. I wrote seven
- 5:11books in one year because I was ready to get out of a situation that
- 5:15I didn't want to be in anymore. And I think we're probably going to
- 5:18discuss that a little bit, not too much in detail. But I love
- 5:24reading, I love writing, I love spending time with my kids, and
- 5:29I love to cook and do a whole bunch of other creative things. Singing
- 5:32as well. I love to sing. I can sing too. So I
- 5:36served as a music teacher for nine years. Oh wow, oh wow,
- 5:42that is awesome. I know that. Yeah. One more thing, I'm
- 5:46cert about to teach eight different subjects. Oh ooh, So, so if
- 5:55you can teach any subject. What subject would it be? Now? Music?
- 6:03I was okay, So let's narrow down a little bit more. If
- 6:05you can teach a course subject. I'm looking at you and I'm getting reading
- 6:16and I'm thinking science, but I think reading both of them. Yeah,
- 6:26because I incorporate a lot of reading strategies in my science classes. I'm certified
- 6:32in reading, okay, you know for kids because some of the science worst,
- 6:39some of the scientific words, you know, are are kind of difficult
- 6:44for students to read, So I teach them a way to read it,
- 6:49you know, you know, phonetically. You know they call it what do
- 6:55they call it? Sense or not sense? Read syllabic multi syllabic instruction.
- 7:08Yeah, we're gonna leave that up to you. Me and science no was
- 7:15Latin words, you know. I'm gonna tell you by me and science.
- 7:19When I was in high school, all my last period class of the day
- 7:25was science. And for some odd reason my tenth grade year, my little
- 7:31boyfriend was in the science class. So half of the time my mama she
- 7:35don passed on so I could talk to him. Half of the time it
- 7:39wasn't in school. So yeah, me and science just never got along.
- 7:45Wasn't happening. So what made you want to become an author? Well,
- 7:51I always liked writing and I always loved poetry because, like I said,
- 7:58I don't think I even told you, but music was always played in by
- 8:01a house growing up, so a lot of music is poetry. So whenever
- 8:07we did do in English classes and such, whenever we did do poetry,
- 8:15that was my thing. I loved Robert Frost and the poem nothing Gold Stays
- 8:20and the song that Stephen Wan wrote, uh stay Gold. I love that
- 8:26song. I did a when I was a music teacher. I had girls
- 8:31in a fall festival. I had girls sing not singing, doing a scarf
- 8:37routine and the gloves on the hands to that stay Goal. And before that
- 8:43they did the poem. They read the poem Nothing Gold Stays. So I
- 8:48do a lot of different things. Okay, So I guess my next question
- 8:54would be, like, what a right you said you've written? But over
- 8:58fifteen boats, I'm taking my time, I don't know, but take your
- 9:07time with all the books you got going on. Well, my next question
- 9:11to you would be what genres are those books about? Is everything poetry or
- 9:18you got a little bit of mixture things I got a little mix. Some
- 9:22of it is what I call a hybrid. It has some poetry and some
- 9:26paragraphs, like Wet Dreams has some paragraphs and some poetry. And then I
- 9:37have a book called Life Support that's the same thing. So it's some poem
- 9:43books that are hybrids, or I call them po VELAs or whatever. I
- 9:50made that term because of a novella is shorter than a novel, so I
- 9:54call it a poe vella because it has poetry and it has a little piece
- 10:00with novella as well. Okay, okay, So if you could choose any
- 10:05of your fifteen books, which one of those books would you say is your
- 10:13baby, like this book. If you had to recommend one of them to
- 10:18me, which one of those would be your baby? To say this is
- 10:22the book, which book would it be? You probably wouldn't believe. But
- 10:26it's not Wet Dreams my very first book, because it's it it started.
- 10:39I started writing a book when I was a pre service teacher. When I
- 10:43was in student teacher, and I was writing you know, educational poems and
- 10:46stuff when I was in college. So then when I became a teacher,
- 10:52I was writing them all along and along and along, and then when I
- 10:54became a music teacher, they kept you know, I kept adding, adding,
- 10:58adding, because I wrote all of the programs for the school. You
- 11:01know, the kids will sing or dance or something, and then I have
- 11:05something for them to read. So it's school days, holidays and all days
- 11:09a lot between. That's my baby, right there. I love that book,
- 11:11you know, that's like my favorite. And it's a three book series
- 11:18because I love teaching the kids. I love the kids, so I'm none
- 11:22of go ahead, sweetheart. Uh. And it's in special collections in the
- 11:28Louisiana State University Library and in the Missouri Southern State Library and the University of
- 11:37Missouri Library. And they also were contenders to be supplemental texts supplemental texts to
- 11:46teacher ed programs. Alright, so I guess my next question. It's kind
- 11:54of controversial, so I want you to listen to it. I know that
- 11:58we've had a lot of controversies when it comes down to teachers and their writings
- 12:05or the things that teacher has done in the classroom, Like the teacher just
- 12:11lost his job because the kids were taking out his hair, whereas another teacher
- 12:18different race was letting kids playing their hair. So my question to you has
- 12:26is has your writing ever caused an issue with you being a teacher? Yeah?
- 12:37But and it was before we dreams, you know, it was before
- 12:41we dreams. You know. Now when I get into situations where I have
- 12:48to work, I already tell them, will you have a problem? Ask
- 12:52where you have a problem with this? Because you know a lot of times
- 12:56people will say always saw ms Brown on Instagram, and she will say in
- 13:01this and this and this. But that's my thing outside of work, you
- 13:05know. I mean, I'm a spoken word artist, so it's probably gonna
- 13:09be some things that I say, but it doesn't mean that I'm saying it
- 13:11in class. You know. Whatever I say at home is what I say
- 13:16at home. Whatever I say at work is what I say at work.
- 13:22I'm just curious because I know where I work at there is I work at
- 13:26a public library, and I've been working this library for nineteen years. You
- 13:31guys. The craziest thing that's this happened in the state of South Carolina.
- 13:37Now, we have to put, as they say, provisions in the books,
- 13:41so and there has to be a certain area we keep those books that
- 13:48are controversial. I never thought I would see that, and I got kind
- 13:54of worried because the books that I read hmmm yeah, Like the last book
- 14:01I read was Choke Well, no choke me, spank me, pull my
- 14:05hair. Then there was another book called Deep Throat Divaults. So I was
- 14:11like, yo, what about the people like me who read these controversial titles?
- 14:16And you know, how would that affect? So that's what made me
- 14:20ask you that question, because now seems like everything is somehow being tied together.
- 14:28When we're supposed to have this work life balance quote quote, but now
- 14:33we have to worry about whatever we do in our life reflecting on our work,
- 14:37which is so wrong so many levels. So that's what made me ask
- 14:41you that question. You have the opportunity, okay, to write with any
- 14:50author. Who would it be? And why dead? All lie dead,
- 14:58are alive? Bring them back if your ha mm hmm oh just one okay,
- 15:05okay, I'll give you three choices. Three choices, Well, Shakespeare
- 15:09is one, Maya Angelo and Langston Hughes. Oh why is Shakespeare? Girl?
- 15:22Ooh? I love I love him and I always want to go to
- 15:26London to see the Globe Theater because I love Romeo, Juliet and Julius Caesar,
- 15:33all of those all place, all of them. I feel like the
- 15:37way his the way, his choice of words I have. I want a
- 15:43poster for Christmas, and I hope my kids get it for me that says
- 15:48insult like Shakespeare because because words? Oh, okay, okay, Why am
- 16:03Langston huge Langston Hughes. He was part of the Harlem Renaissance. He was
- 16:12one of the four runners of it. And he just had a lot a
- 16:18lot of He just had a unique style. It's hard to explain. I
- 16:22just really liked a lot of his work, Okay. And then Maya Angelo.
- 16:29Why her? Because she's from the South and she now she's from not
- 16:34too far where I'm from. She's from she was from Arkansas Stamps and she
- 16:40grew up in a small town just like me. And she's She's went through
- 16:45a lot of stuff in her life just like I did. And I can
- 16:48identify with her, especially with the book that a lot of people I know
- 16:55why the Cage Bird Sings because she was really quiet because of some of the
- 17:00issues that she grew up having. Uh. She was really quiet, and
- 17:07as a child, I was really quiet. I won the Quiet Game K
- 17:11through twelve on Mash I understand. I understand one of the quiet games.
- 17:19So it's it's you have so many books and I just I want to tap
- 17:30into each of them. But can we get a little bit of what Wet
- 17:36Dreams is about? So we can have you know, yeah, okay,
- 17:41I'll give you one call let me see it. I know that one by
- 17:47hard, time out, time out. Oh oh, y'all, please please
- 18:00what you know? What? Go ahead? I think you might answer with
- 18:07the point, go ahead, go ahead. This is called let me see
- 18:12it from Wet Dreams. I know that the neighbors hear it, but they
- 18:18definitely don't see it. What are they here? Let me see? They
- 18:22hit a bed rocking, They hear both of us cussing. They hear me
- 18:26screaming. They hear me and you laughing. They hear ugk playing loudly.
- 18:32Then hear you calling my name, then hear me calling here, You calling
- 18:36me all kinds of names that I like to hear you say. Let me
- 18:38see. I bet the neighbors say them. Nasty niggas be at it every
- 18:41damn day. They be fucking all kinds of ways. Now never get tired
- 18:45of doing that shit. The fucking maybor be saying to his wife that black
- 18:48girl got some big gass lips, and that black dude of the suit that
- 18:52draws the luxurious car leaves that apartment every day smiling bigger than the superstar.
- 18:57But she leaves to get the mall. She's smiling to what they do.
- 19:02Hm, we hit every day of day. I'm just gonna knock on the
- 19:06door one day while they're at their buck wild play, just to say hey
- 19:10and let me see it. That's that piece, all right, y'all were
- 19:14about to go into commercial. That sude. We're going fin this to often
- 19:21the cool girl. Let me find out, y'all, we're gonna be back.
- 19:27We're gonna try to get that commercial. Turn off the la can tonight
- 19:56an imagine, let's take a shower shower together. I'll watch a Bundy you
- 20:14must not that some wealth day and save Jayce. Turn On, Come to
- 20:44girl. I'm want to give you a special tweet. You're so sweet.
- 20:49Turn on. You know that song is very appropriate when time y'all heard the
- 21:03point. If you want to hear it again when we come off, y'all
- 21:07and go and catch the replay. But I have a question for you.
- 21:11Someone asks, have you ever had any backlash when writing The Point, while
- 21:18writing Wet Dreams. After writing Wet Dreams, Oh yeah. A lot of
- 21:25women, a lot of mad wives, a lot of a lot of men,
- 21:30uh sending me things that I didn't know want to see a lot of
- 21:36guys on Instagram on DM and me talking about I love you so good,
- 21:45so good things. I mean, some of it was good and some of
- 21:51it was not so good. So how do you deal with criticism when it
- 21:56comes to your books? Huh? How do you what criticism? Yes,
- 22:08like, when somebody gives you a negative comment or they say something negative about
- 22:11your books, or excuse me, say something negative about the poems in your
- 22:17books. How do you deal with it? Oh? I try to take
- 22:21it in stride and just let it, you know, try to deal with
- 22:23it in a positive way. Because everybody has their own opinion. I love
- 22:30that. I love that because I do reviews and people I've had some people
- 22:33get mad at me and I'm like, hey, it is just my opinion.
- 22:37Every book is not for everybody, you know. I can't read the
- 22:41OM series because I'm gonna get bored. But I can set up here and
- 22:47read Thugs and the Woman who love them and have no problem whatsoever. I
- 22:51can read Queen Latifa, girl, fixed your crown, but then I can't
- 22:56read think like a women, Act like a woman, think like a man.
- 23:02So it's really about the person who's reading your book. The fact that
- 23:06they read your book is a thing that gets me. That should give you
- 23:10the honor and the pride. So we're getting down to those last moments,
- 23:18baby girls. So tell us how we can follow you, how we can
- 23:22get our copy of Wet Dreams, because we're gonna be talking about it next
