- 0:31i'm pastor david and today we're exploring one
- 0:33of the most remarkable threads of history a date
- 0:36that keeps reappearing across centuries always
- 0:40asking the same question what happens when conscience
- 0:44has a cost from the storm -tossed voyage of a
- 0:48puritan minister in sixteen thirty five to the
- 0:51moral storms of modern politics august seventeenth
- 0:54has carried stories of courage conviction innovation
- 0:57and consequence let's walk through six defining
- 1:02moments that reveal how faith freedom and conscience
- 1:05have shaped our world on august seventeenth sixteen
- 1:08thirty five puritan minister richard mather reached
- 1:11boston after surviving the great colonial hurricane
- 1:14aboard the ship james he had left england because
- 1:17his conscience would not allow him to conform
- 1:20to the state church mather's arrival marked more
- 1:23than a migration it was a declaration that faith
- 1:27sometimes demands departure his descendants including
- 1:30increased mather and cotton mather became pillars
- 1:34of new england's spiritual life what was the
- 1:38lesson conscience can call you to leave everything
- 1:42familiar behind fast forward twenty -seven years
- 1:46on sunday august seventeenth sixteen sixty two
- 1:50hundreds of puritan and nonconformist ministers
- 1:53preached their farewell sermons before being
- 1:56expelled from the pulpits under england's act
- 2:00of uniformity they were told conform or lose
- 2:04your ministry thousands chose loss over compromise
- 2:09this became known as the great ejection a defining
- 2:13moment in the history of religious liberty the
- 2:17lesson there Freedom of conscience is not free
- 2:20because government says it is. It becomes real
- 2:24when believers are willing to bear its cost.
- 2:28On August 17, 1807, Robert Fulton and Robert
- 2:33Livingston launched the North River Steamboat,
- 2:36later called Claremont from New York City. It
- 2:40wasn't the first steamboat, but it was the first
- 2:42to prove that steam power could work commercially.
- 2:45fulton's success transformed transportation and
- 2:48commerce across america the lesson there innovation
- 2:52doesn't always mean inventing something new sometimes
- 2:55it means making an old idea practical and powerful
- 2:59on august seventeenth eighteen sixty three union
- 3:03forces began their massive bombardment of fort
- 3:05sumter the confederate stronghold in charleston
- 3:08harbor nearly one thousand shells were fired
- 3:11that day the fort that had symbolized the start
- 3:15of the civil war now symbolize the union's determination
- 3:18to reclaim the nation lesson symbols matter and
- 3:24when conscience and convictions collide even
- 3:26stone walls can become battle grounds for belief
- 3:29august seventeenth nineteen fifteen one of the
- 3:33darkest chapters in american justice leo frank
- 3:37a jewish factory superintendent convicted of
- 3:40murder amid anti -semitic hysteria was kidnapped
- 3:45from prison and lynched by a mob in georgia decades
- 3:49later the state issued a limited pardon not declaring
- 3:53him innocent but admitting its failure to protect
- 3:55him the lesson when public anger replaces due
- 3:59process justice dies conscience must stand against
- 4:04the crowd even when the crowd demands vengeance
- 4:07on august seventeenth nineteen ninety eight President
- 4:10Bill Clinton testified before a grand jury and
- 4:14then addressed the nation, admitting an inappropriate
- 4:16relationship with a White House intern. The moment
- 4:20blurred the line between private morality and
- 4:23public accountability. His impeachment months
- 4:26later forced America to ask, what is the difference
- 4:30between moral failure, legal guilt, and constitutional
- 4:34responsibility? Lesson? Leadership demands integrity.
- 4:39and conscience must guide both private choices
- 4:42and public actions across nearly four centuries
- 4:46august seventeenth keeps asking the same question
- 4:49what convictions are worth the cost richard mather
- 4:54left england for faith the ejected ministers
- 4:57lost their pulpits for conscience fulton risked
- 5:00ridicule for innovation soldiers fought for unity
- 5:04leo frank died because justice failed and a president
- 5:09faced the consequence of personal choices. Each
- 5:14story reminds us that liberty, truth, and conscience
- 5:17are not abstract ideals. They are lived realities
- 5:21that demand courage. So today, as we remember
- 5:25August 17th, let us ask ourselves, what do we
- 5:28believe strongly enough to stand for, even when
- 5:31standing costs us something? This has been The
- 5:35Voices of Life. Did you know? I am Pastor David.
- 5:39Stay faithful, stay courageous, and keep living
- 5:42the truth that conscience is never free. It's
- 5:45proven by the price we're willing to pay. Thank
- 5:48you for joining us today on the Voices of Life
- 5:51podcast, a ministry of the Church for Life. As
- 5:56we close, may the stories we share strengthen
