- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 2nd of April. April Fools has come and gone
- 0:20and here we are rolling back into a bit of normality.
- 0:24We have had the long weekend for Easter.
- 0:26Some of you might get today off as well, but no, for many of us
- 0:30we are back to the grind, back to normal life.
- 0:32I hope you're going well because today today's a day that we are
- 0:36going to open up a new book. And it's not really a new book,
- 0:40but it is a continuation of the book of Samuel.
- 0:44Today we begin Second Samuel, and Second Samuel really is the
- 0:48the continuation of the narrative of First Samuel.
- 0:51We have gone through the rise and fall of Saul, the
- 0:54introduction of the monarchy in Israel, and now we have this new
- 1:00King David. And the book of Second Samuel is
- 1:03going to really talk us through David's rise, David's great
- 1:08successes, and then David's well shortfalls as king.
- 1:13And I know I spoke about in First Samuel a lot about the
- 1:16fact that this is the king after God's iron heart.
- 1:19And in David, we see we see what God's rulership looks like,
- 1:24God's kingship looks like. But the thing about this story
- 1:27is it's not just about David. While the people of Israel chose
- 1:31Saul to be their king, God chooses David not just to be a
- 1:35king, but to be the beginning of a dynasty that will stretch all
- 1:40the way through to his son. Coming in, the incredible Easter
- 1:44story that we just celebrated. So this is an epic tale of God's
- 1:50setting up a new covenant with his people and showing what his
- 1:55godly authority looks like. So you're ready.
- 1:58Let us do it together. Let's read together Second
- 2:02Samuel Chapter one. After the death of soul, David
- 2:16returned from his victory over the Amalekites and spent two
- 2:20days in Ziklag. On the third day, her man
- 2:24arrived from Saul's army camp. He had torn his clothes and put
- 2:28dirt on his head to show that he was in mourning.
- 2:31He fell to the ground before David in deep respect.
- 2:35Where have you come from? David asked.
- 2:37I escaped from the Israelite camp, the man replied.
- 2:41What happened? David demanded.
- 2:44Tell me how the battle went, the man replied.
- 2:47Our entire army fled from the battle.
- 2:50Many of the men are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are
- 2:55also dead. How do you know Saul and
- 2:58Jonathan are dead? David demanded of the young man.
- 3:01The man answered. I happened to be on Mount
- 3:05Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear with the
- 3:09enemy Chariots and charioteers closing in on him.
- 3:13When he turned and saw me, he cried out for me to come to him.
- 3:17How can I help? I asked him.
- 3:19He responded. Who are you?
- 3:21I'm an Amalekite, I told him, and he begged me.
- 3:25Come over here and put me out of my misery, for I am in terrible
- 3:28pain and want to die. So I killed him, the Amalekite
- 3:33told David. For I knew he couldn't live.
- 3:36Then I took his crown and his armband, and I've brought them
- 3:40here to you, my Lord. David and his men tore their
- 3:44clothes in sorrow when they heard the news.
- 3:47They mourned and wept and fasted all day for Saul and his son
- 3:51Jonathan, and for the Lord's army and the nation of Israel,
- 3:56because they had died by the sword that day.
- 3:59Then David said to the young man who had brought the news.
- 4:02Where are you from? And he replied.
- 4:05I'm a foreigner and a malachite who lives in your land.
- 4:11Why were you not afraid to kill the Lords Anointed 1?
- 4:14David asked. Then David said to one of his
- 4:17men. Kill him.
- 4:19So the man thrust his sword into the Amalekite and killed him.
- 4:23You have condemned yourself, David said.
- 4:27For you yourself confessed that you killed the Lord's anointed.
- 4:311 Then David composed a funeral song for Saul and Jonathan, and
- 4:37he commanded that it be taught to the people of Judah.
- 4:40It is known as the Song of the Bow, and it is recorded in the
- 4:45Book of Jasher. Your pride and joy are Israel's
- 4:50lies dead on the hills. Oh how the mighty heroes have
- 4:54fallen. Don't announce the news in Gath.
- 4:57Don't proclaim it in the streets of Ashkelon, or the daughters of
- 5:01the Philistines will rejoice, and the pagans will laugh and
- 5:05triumph all mountains of Gilboa. Let there be no due or reign
- 5:11upon you, nor fruitful fields producing offerings of grain,
- 5:16for there the shield of the mighty heroes was defiled.
- 5:20The shield of Saul will no longer be anointed with oil.
- 5:24The bow of Jonathan was powerful, and the sword of Saul
- 5:28did its mighty work. They shed the blood of their
- 5:31enemies and pierced the bodies of mighty heroes.
- 5:36How beloved and gracious was Saul and Jonathan?
- 5:40They were together in life and in death.
- 5:43They were swifter than Eagles, stronger than lions, are women
- 5:47of Israel. Weep for soul, for he dressed
- 5:51you in luxurious scarlet clothing, in garments decorated
- 5:55with gold. All how the mighty heroes have
- 5:59fallen in battle. Jonathan lies dead on the hills.
- 6:03How I weep for you, my brother Jonathan Ohe, how much I loved
- 6:09you. And your love for me was deep,
- 6:12deeper than the love of women. Oh, how the mighty heroes have
- 6:16fallen. Stripped of their weapons, they
- 6:19lied dead. Lord, you are a mighty mighty
- 6:34God, and your plans stretch throughout history, both past
- 6:39and forwards, and we just can't fathom the length and the
- 6:44breadth of your understanding and your guidance of all the
- 6:48things that happen around us. So, Lord, while we don't
- 6:53understand it, we do know that it all sits in the palm of your
- 6:58hand. And so we submit to you and your
- 7:01rule and the greatness of your narrative that plays out in this
- 7:06world. And when things seem confusing
- 7:09and we don't understand what's happening, we trust that this is
- 7:13part of your good plan for your creation, and that in the
- 7:18fullness of your planning, you restore all things back to
- 7:23yourself. So we will Live Today in all the
- 7:27challenges and all the drawbacks and all the joys, and we will
- 7:32know that it all fits in your hand and in your embrace.
- 7:39We worship you, our mighty, and our omniscient God, and it's in
- 7:43the name of Jesus that we pray these things.
- 7:47I'm in.
