Latest / The Rand Report: Sports / Judge Progress, Villain Locked, Race On
Transcript
- 0:00The rib is still broken, but the scans finally
- 0:02moved. Aaron Judge walked onto the field at Yankee
- 0:05Stadium in full gear, stretching, jogging, resistance
- 0:08bands, light activity only, no swings yet, and
- 0:11the three -time MVP looked straight at the cameras
- 0:14and said the only thing that mattered. I'll be
- 0:17back this season. I don't know why I wouldn't
- 0:19be. Welcome to The Rand Report. I'm Jim Rand.
- 0:22This is the day the Yankees got a real update
- 0:25instead of another holding pattern. Judge has
- 0:27been on the shelf since May 31st with a stress
- 0:30fracture in that right rib, moved to the 60 -day
- 0:33list in July, weeks of lower body work only.
- 0:37Sharp pain turning into dull pain, then Tuesday's
- 0:40scan, enough healing to open the next door. Boone
- 0:43is still careful. Running, upper body resistance,
- 0:46weight room, nothing that loads the rib the way
- 0:49a swing does. Judge knows the math. 52, 53 games
- 0:53left. He's not waiting for perfect. He's waiting
- 0:55for functional. That's the difference between
- 0:57a star and a guy who just wants the narrative.
- 1:00Judge is not performing recovery for the cameras.
- 1:03He's tracking the days and the healing. Meanwhile,
- 1:06in Phoenix, Dylan Brooks just got paid, 3 years,
- 1:1073 million, fully guaranteed, through 2029 -30,
- 1:15and the first thing out of his mouth? Villain
- 1:17is here to stay. Championship is all on my mind.
- 1:21Love it. Brooks came over in the Durant deal
- 1:23and delivered a career -high 20 .2 points. Defense
- 1:27that still gets under people's skin, a culture
- 1:29shift the Suns actually needed. Owner Matt Ishpia
- 1:32already shut down the trade rumors months ago.
- 1:35Now the paper matches the talk. This is not a
- 1:38soft extension for a role player who plays nice.
- 1:41This is the son saying they want the edge. The
- 1:43guy who talks, the guy who bumps, the guy who
- 1:45doesn't apologize for it. In a league that sometimes
- 1:48pretends toughness is optional, Brooks just got
- 1:51a long -term vote of confidence for being exactly
- 1:54who he is. And while we're talking impact players,
- 1:58the NL MVP race just got louder. Pete Crow Armstrong
- 2:01and Shohei Otani are trading haymakers. Crow
- 2:05Armstrong with the multi -homer knights and the
- 2:07aggressive base running that changes innings.
- 2:09Otani still doing the two -way thing at a level
- 2:12that shouldn't be normal. It's not settled. It's
- 2:15better than settled. It's competitive. Meanwhile,
- 2:18the AL East has the rays sitting on top. Yankee
- 2:21still in the hunt, but missing their captain.
- 2:23Brewers rolling in the central like they plan
- 2:25on staying there. August is when the standings
- 2:28start telling the truth. Injuries, extensions,
- 2:30and MVP races all collide in the same week. Judge
- 2:34is not back yet, but the path is open. Brooks
- 2:37is locked in and leaning into the role, and the
- 2:39best players in the National League are forcing
- 2:42each other to raise the bar. That's the board
- 2:44right now. No soft takes, no waiting for the
- 2:47perfect narrative. This has been The Rand Report.
- 2:50I'm Jim Rand. Remember, less hype, more truth.
- 2:54Until next time, keep competing.
