- 0:00Speaker 1: Dixie, a touring dance band leader, arrives in an unnamed
- 0:04Speaker 1: small town for a one-night high school engagement and unexpectedly
- 0:08Speaker 1: reunites with Julia, his former vocalist and fiancée. When a
- 0:13Speaker 1: young fan dies in an accident connected with Dixie's hotel room,
- 0:18Speaker 1: an angry crowd gathers outside and Dixie and Julia face
- 0:21Speaker 1: a community demanding its own justice. That is Suspense, Death
- 0:26Speaker 1: on My Hands, Episode Zero, from May 1st, 1951. Phil
- 0:32Speaker 1: Harris and Alice Fay appear in dramatic roles, with Joseph Kearns,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Herb Butterfield, and Barbara Whiting. John Michael Hayes and E.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Jack Newman wrote the script, and Elliot Lewis produced and directed.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And now, the original broadcast.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Autolite and its 96,000 dealers present Suspense. Tonight, Autolite brings
- 1:05Speaker 2: you the story of an accidental death and an attempted escape.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Death on my hands. Starring Phil Harris and Alice Faye.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Hi, Harlow.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Well, flood my carburetor if it isn't Oscar the Orating Otto.
- 1:27Speaker 6: What's up?
- 1:27Speaker 4: My hood, Harlow.
- 1:29Speaker 7: It's been nearly 5,000 miles since my last spark plug check.
- 1:33Speaker 5: And you're set for a session with your Autolite spark
- 1:36Speaker 5: plug dealer, eh, Oscar? His exclusive new plug check indicator
- 1:39Speaker 5: will quickly show the condition of your spark plugs and
- 1:42Speaker 5: whether they're right for your style of driving.
- 1:44Speaker 7: I'm not up to par, Harlow. I've lost my usual
- 1:47Speaker 7: pep on the hills and I'm using too much gasoline.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Well, if the plug check indicator shows your spark plugs
- 1:54Speaker 5: need cleaning or adjustments, your Autolite spark plug dealer has
- 1:57Speaker 5: all the equipment to do the job right.
- 2:00Speaker 4: And if my plugs are worn out, Harlow?
- 2:02Speaker 5: Then he'll replace the worn out spark plugs with ignition
- 2:05Speaker 5: engineered Autolite. Resistor-type or standard-type spark plugs to give you
- 2:09Speaker 5: smoother performance, quick starts, and gas savings. So, friends, have
- 2:14Speaker 5: your spark plugs checked regularly. And when you do, see
- 2:17Speaker 5: your neighborhood Autolite spark plug dealer. And remember, you're always
- 2:22Speaker 5: right with Autolite.
- 2:24Speaker 2: And now, with death on my hands and the performances
- 2:28Speaker 2: of Alice Faye and Phil Harris, Autolite hopes once again
- 2:32Speaker 2: to keep you in suspense.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I won't mention the name of the town. It won't
- 2:50Speaker 4: help any. I don't think I'll even tell you what
- 2:52Speaker 4: part of the country it's in. It's just a place
- 2:54Speaker 4: in a long valley with hundred-year-old elms and hills you
- 2:58Speaker 4: can't stop looking at. And the people? Well, maybe they're
- 3:02Speaker 4: not much different than anybody else. 2,500 of them. The
- 3:07Speaker 4: kids went to schools with big lawns and long walks.
- 3:10Speaker 4: And the men walked up Oak Street from the mills
- 3:13Speaker 4: right after the five o'clock whistles. Some stopped for a
- 3:16Speaker 4: beer at Mike's or the Green Rooster or Eddie's Tavern
- 3:19Speaker 4: and some went right on home. Sounds wonderfully ordinary, doesn't it?
- 3:26Speaker 4: That's what I thought. Until they tried to hang me.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Dixie! Dixie! Oh, Dixie.
- 3:40Speaker 4: I can't believe it.
- 3:41Speaker 6: It's me, all right. I saw you from across the street.
- 3:45Speaker 4: What in the world are you doing in this little town, Julia?
- 3:47Speaker 6: Oh, just getting a little rest.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Don't give me that. Your idea of rest was always
- 3:53Speaker 4: to sit in an air-conditioned cocktail lounge.
- 3:56Speaker 6: Gee, you look good.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Well, what about you? I wish you'd have stayed with
- 4:00Speaker 4: the band, Julia.
- 4:01Speaker 6: I just felt like drifting, Dixie.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Where did you drift?
- 4:06Speaker 8: All over.
- 4:07Speaker 6: Ended up with a carnival.
- 4:08Speaker 4: A carnival?
- 4:09Speaker 9: I saw the posters about you and the band playing
- 4:11Speaker 9: for the high school dance tonight.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I couldn't believe it.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Well, you don't get young doing one-nighters, but you see
- 4:16Speaker 4: a lot of country and some swell people. You, for example.
- 4:20Speaker 6: How are all the boys?
- 4:22Speaker 4: Well, I'm the only one of the original bunch left.
- 4:25Speaker 6: No.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Yeah. Sugar Thompson went with Kenton. Bill Candoli joined the
- 4:29Speaker 4: circus in Cleveland, married a snake charmer.
- 4:31Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Yeah. And then Squeak Hanley lost himself up with the
- 4:35Speaker 4: law in Virginia. You know how it goes. I got
- 4:38Speaker 4: all new side men now, just kids.
- 4:40Speaker 6: Yeah. Things change, don't they?
- 4:42Speaker 4: Yeah, they do. Hey, look, Julia, why don't you drop
- 4:45Speaker 4: in at the dance?
- 4:46Speaker 6: They'd think I was an old science teacher.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Nah, you'll knock them dead. No.
- 4:51Speaker 6: No, look, Dixie.
- 4:53Speaker 9: I want to talk to you. I'm at the embassy,
- 4:55Speaker 9: across from the railroad station. The only hotel in town.
- 4:58Speaker 9: I'll see you after the dance, outside. And we'll have
- 5:01Speaker 9: a sandwich and a drink and a.
- 5:02Speaker 6: Talk, huh?
- 5:03Speaker 8: Okay.
- 5:04Speaker 4: If that's the way you want it. Look, it's the
- 5:06Speaker 4: high school auditorium, you know.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Well, I'll see you. Dixie. Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Who's singing in my place now?
- 5:15Speaker 4: You.
- 5:17Speaker 7: Me.
- 5:17Speaker 10: We walked opposite directions and caught each other looking back
- 5:29Speaker 10: a couple of times.
- 5:31Speaker 4: She looked good. But then she always had. There had
- 5:34Speaker 4: never been anything wrong with how Julia looked. That night
- 5:40Speaker 4: at the high school dance I played like I hadn't
- 5:42Speaker 4: played for weeks. Man, that band caught fire. You should
- 5:46Speaker 4: have seen the faces of those kids dancing by the bandstand.
- 5:48Speaker 4: They looked at me as if I invented music. And me,
- 5:52Speaker 4: a third-rate clarinet player. Trouble was as far from my
- 5:55Speaker 4: mind as Carnegie Hall is from Bop City. It was
- 5:59Speaker 4: backstage after the dance that the bubble blew up in
- 6:02Speaker 4: my face.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Here's the loot, boss. Look at it.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Big, coarse notes. Yeah, what does it come to, Teddy?
- 6:09Speaker 11: Well, a cashier says 1,200 round simoleons. But I'd count
- 6:13Speaker 11: it myself.
- 6:14Speaker 4: That's not bad for this town.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Listen, it's a.
- 6:17Speaker 11: Lot better than standing on Vine Street waiting for a
- 6:19Speaker 11: recording date. I'll take this kind of loot any day
- 6:22Speaker 11: in a week.
- 6:23Speaker 4: I better put this in my bag. Hey, that bag
- 6:25Speaker 4: must be loaded by now. I got two weeks' take
- 6:27Speaker 4: in there. But I'll drop it in the bank when
- 6:29Speaker 4: we get to Kansas City.
- 6:31Speaker 11: Are you still carrying that gun for protection?
- 6:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Ted. Right here. I wouldn't know how to use it, though. Loaded?
- 6:38Speaker 4: Every chamber. See? Oh, those things give me the creeps.
- 6:43Speaker 11: Hey, what else you got in that bag?
- 6:44Speaker 4: Just some publicity pictures of me. I'm going to get
- 6:47Speaker 4: some new ones, though.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Get them while you're young.
- 6:50Speaker 11: When they start camouflaging those age lines in your face,
- 6:52Speaker 11: the cost goes up by leaps and bounds.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, I know. Uh, Teddy, tell the boys
- 6:57Speaker 4: I'll be at the next stop tomorrow.
- 6:59Speaker 9: Oh?
- 7:00Speaker 3: Who'd you tie up with?
- 7:03Speaker 4: Juliet.
- 7:04Speaker 6: She here?
- 7:05Speaker 3: Well, I'll be darned.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Small world, huh?
- 7:08Speaker 11: What's she doing now?
- 7:09Speaker 4: I'll tell you tomorrow. We got about six years talking
- 7:11Speaker 4: to do in eight hours. Now get on out of here, huh? Yeah, right, boss.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Come in.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Come in.
- 7:25Speaker 4: I'll be with you in a minute, Julia. I just want.
- 7:27Speaker 6: My name isn't Julia. It's Emily.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Oh. Oh, Emily. Well, what can I do for you?
- 7:34Speaker 8: Well, they all.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Dared me to come in and tell you how much
- 7:37Speaker 4: we liked your music. Well, bless you. So you liked it, huh?
- 7:41Speaker 4: Never had such a good band at our dance before.
- 7:43Speaker 4: It was like having Benny Goodman. Well, now, aren't you sweet?
- 7:48Speaker 4: I'll tell Benny when I see him.
- 7:49Speaker 6: Do you have a picture I could have?
- 7:52Speaker 4: Well, I don't have any real good ones, but... Hey,
- 7:54Speaker 4: I'll tell you what. You give me your name and address,
- 7:56Speaker 4: and I'll send you one autographed. With love to Emily,
- 7:59Speaker 4: my prettiest fan.
- 8:01Speaker 6: I can see some in that suitcase.
- 8:02Speaker 4: No, those aren't any good. They're kind of old. I mean.
- 8:05Speaker 6: I just got to get one. They dared me.
- 8:07Speaker 4: All right, but don't pull that suitcase, kid. Look out!
- 8:12Speaker 11: Kid.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Kid.
- 8:16Speaker 4: What did you do? She fell to the floor and
- 8:22Speaker 4: her head suddenly spurted red. For a moment I was
- 8:25Speaker 4: so shocked I didn't know what to do. Then I
- 8:28Speaker 4: bent over and I picked her up and... I ran
- 8:30Speaker 4: to find the nearest doctor. I ran almost four blocks
- 8:33Speaker 4: with people staring at me like I was crazy. I
- 8:36Speaker 4: couldn't even feel myself. I was just a thought.
- 8:39Speaker 8: Get to a doctor. Get to a doctor.
- 8:42Speaker 4: And I finally did.
- 8:44Speaker 6: She died instantly.
- 8:46Speaker 4: No doctor in the world could help her. From then on,
- 8:52Speaker 4: it was a nightmare. There was only four policemen in
- 8:56Speaker 4: town and they were all handling highway traffic 30 miles
- 8:58Speaker 4: away because of a big mill fire. I told the
- 9:01Speaker 4: doctor and the people who crowded around me that I'd
- 9:03Speaker 4: stay in town and face a police inquest the next morning.
- 9:06Speaker 4: There were some grumbles and some nasty words, but nobody
- 9:11Speaker 4: stopped me from checking in at the embassy hotel. But
- 9:14Speaker 4: I was there only an hour when I realized I
- 9:16Speaker 4: wasn't going to get off that easily. A group of
- 9:19Speaker 4: men formed outside the hotel and stood looking up at
- 9:23Speaker 4: my window. Then all of a sudden I realized they
- 9:28Speaker 4: wanted to lynch me.
- 9:38Speaker 12: Listen.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Now listen down there.
- 9:41Speaker 8: I know you're there.
- 9:41Speaker 4: You don't need no rocks through no windows.
- 9:43Speaker 8: You don't need any lousy notes. I know why you're there.
- 9:46Speaker 6: How long are you waiting, Dixie?
- 9:48Speaker 7: How tight are the ropes going to be?
- 9:49Speaker 8: You're never going to use a rope on me.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Never. Do you understand?
- 9:52Speaker 6: Never.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Who is it? Who is it?
- 9:58Speaker 6: It's Julius.
- 10:05Speaker 4: What do you want?
- 10:06Speaker 6: Who are you doing all the shouting at?
- 10:10Speaker 4: Them. Those people down there. If you can call them people.
- 10:15Speaker 4: They threw a note through the window on a rock.
- 10:17Speaker 4: They want me for killing that girl.
- 10:20Speaker 6: Maybe I can help you.
- 10:21Speaker 4: What can you do?
- 10:23Speaker 9: Don't kick a friendship in the face, Dixie. You never
- 10:25Speaker 9: know when it'll come in handy.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Yeah, tell me all about it. Look at him down there.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Watching the window like hound dogs with a treed possum.
- 10:33Speaker 9: Oh, Dixie, why don't you think of something to do
- 10:36Speaker 9: instead of just burning off steam?
- 10:37Speaker 8: Think?
- 10:38Speaker 4: In the past hour, I've thought more than that Greek
- 10:40Speaker 4: philosopher did in a lifetime. But it all boils down
- 10:44Speaker 4: to me ending up with a tag on my toe.
- 10:47Speaker 6: I wish I could help you.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Look, what are you hanging around me for? They might
- 10:51Speaker 4: try to do something to you if they find out
- 10:53Speaker 4: you've been nice to me.
- 10:54Speaker 6: I'll take my chances. I got nothing else to do.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Oh, thanks. Don't waste your time. I don't think it's
- 11:02Speaker 4: going to pay off. You know what? They make me
- 11:04Speaker 4: feel like a criminal. They found my car.
- 11:07Speaker 6: They did?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yeah. Somebody told the manager. What's his name? Abdo. The
- 11:12Speaker 4: car's three miles north of here in an empty riverbed.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Burned to a crisp. The only thing in the world
- 11:18Speaker 4: I own.
- 11:19Speaker 6: Oh, Dixie, don't let it get you.
- 11:20Speaker 4: But how much do they want? Julie, an accident is
- 11:24Speaker 4: an accident. That means it wasn't done on purpose. She
- 11:27Speaker 4: grabbed the bag and the gun went off. And she would...
- 11:33Speaker 4: She would... Just a little kid.
- 11:35Speaker 9: Oh, Dixie, Dixie, stop it. You're not doing yourself any
- 11:39Speaker 9: good this way. It could happen to anyone.
- 11:42Speaker 6: To me... Or the people next door, or even to
- 11:46Speaker 6: one of them down there. Come on, sweetheart, and sit
- 11:49Speaker 6: down here with me.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Wait a minute.
- 11:52Speaker 6: What is it, Dixon?
- 11:54Speaker 4: More of them. And they got guns now. Not just
- 11:57Speaker 4: clubs and ropes. Guns.
- 11:59Speaker 6: Get away from that window.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Maybe I don't want to. Maybe I could get them
- 12:02Speaker 4: to shoot me from here, and then it... Well, it'd
- 12:04Speaker 4: be over with like that.
- 12:06Speaker 6: Get back from that window. Come on.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Let go of me. They wouldn't shoot. They want their
- 12:12Speaker 4: fun later.
- 12:13Speaker 9: Do what I say. You gotta think, Dixie. You gotta
- 12:17Speaker 9: think of some way to get out of here.
- 12:19Speaker 4: I'm sorry that girl got killed. Sorry as an honest
- 12:24Speaker 4: man can be, but... Well, there's no point in dying
- 12:27Speaker 4: to prove it.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Thank God understands, Dixie.
- 12:31Speaker 4: It's just another rock.
- 12:33Speaker 5: No, it isn't.
- 12:33Speaker 6: Look what the... Oh, never mind, Dixie. It's what she said.
- 12:37Speaker 4: A rock. Wait a minute now. It's something else. What
- 12:39Speaker 4: is it? Don't hide it from me.
- 12:40Speaker 6: Oh, Dixie.
- 12:40Speaker 8: Give it to me.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Oh, a shoe. One of her shoes. What are they
- 12:48Speaker 4: going to throw up next, her body?
- 12:50Speaker 3: Dixie, let me take it.
- 12:52Speaker 9: Let them keep it.
- 12:54Speaker 8: You dirty, dirty....
- 12:59Speaker 4: Oh, Dixie, Dixie.
- 13:03Speaker 9: There was only something we could do.
- 13:04Speaker 4: There isn't. When people get like that, they're just as.
- 13:10Speaker 6: I'm not going to let this happen.
- 13:11Speaker 9: I'm not going to.
- 13:12Speaker 8: Julia, listen.
- 13:14Speaker 4: They're breaking the door down. They're coming in.
- 13:17Speaker 6: We've got to get out of here somehow.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Get out? There's no way to get out now. Now
- 13:21Speaker 4: go back to your room, Julia.
- 13:22Speaker 6: I won't.
- 13:23Speaker 4: I said go on.
- 13:24Speaker 6: It's too late, Dixie. They're coming down the hall.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Autolite is bringing you Phil Harris and Alice Faye in
- 13:44Speaker 2: Death on My Hands. Tonight's production in radio's outstanding theater
- 13:49Speaker 2: of thrills, Suspense.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Yippee!
- 14:02Speaker 5: Why the loud levity, my loquacious limousine?
- 14:05Speaker 7: I just visited my neighborhood auto light spark plug dealer, Harlow.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Did he check your spark plugs with the nimble nemesis
- 14:12Speaker 5: of nefarious spark plugs, the auto light plug check indicator?
- 14:16Speaker 7: Yes, sir, Harlow, and it showed that my plugs were
- 14:19Speaker 7: not functioning properly. So he replaced those worn-out spark plugs
- 14:23Speaker 7: with the matchless magic manifested by the multiple magnificence of
- 14:27Speaker 7: ignition-engineered autolight spark plugs.
- 14:29Speaker 8: Eh, Oscar?
- 14:30Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:30Speaker 7: And now I'm giving smoother performance, quick starts, and gas savings.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Ha, ha, ha.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Well, it pays to see your neighborhood auto light spark
- 14:38Speaker 5: plug dealer. He carries ignition engineered auto light spark plugs,
- 14:42Speaker 5: the world famous spark plugs that are designed by the
- 14:45Speaker 5: same engineers who design complete ignition system for many leading
- 14:49Speaker 5: makes of our finest cars.
- 14:51Speaker 4: And I'm off for a spring fling.
- 14:53Speaker 7: So long.
- 14:56Speaker 5: So, friends, see your neighborhood Autolite spark plug dealer soon
- 15:01Speaker 5: and have him replace worn-out spark plugs with ignition-engineered Autolite
- 15:05Speaker 5: resistor-type or standard-type spark plugs. Remember, you're always right with Autolite.
- 15:12Speaker 2: And now, Autolite brings back to our Hollywood soundstage Alice
- 15:17Speaker 2: Faye and Phil Harris in Elliot Lewis's production of Death
- 15:21Speaker 2: on My Hands. A tale well calculated to keep you
- 15:25Speaker 2: in suspense.
- 15:28Speaker 13: Quiet, you dear. Don't make any noise.
- 15:43Speaker 6: It only sounds like one person.
- 15:46Speaker 4: One person can carry a gun.
- 15:49Speaker 6: Couldn't be them, Dixie. They wouldn't knock.
- 15:52Speaker 8: Who is it?
- 15:53Speaker 3: Abdo, the hotel owner left me.
- 15:58Speaker 4: All right. What's on your mind?
- 16:06Speaker 3: They broke in the door downstairs. I stopped them in
- 16:09Speaker 3: the lobby. They had ropes and guns.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Thank you, Abdo.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Oh, don't thank me.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I told them that they couldn't come in after you,
- 16:16Speaker 3: but that you would go out.
- 16:18Speaker 4: You don't mean that.
- 16:20Speaker 3: I told them within 15 minutes.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Abdo.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Let me stay a little longer in the name of
- 16:25Speaker 4: humanity till I can dope this out. I got enough money.
- 16:29Speaker 4: I don't worry about money. Well, what have you got
- 16:32Speaker 4: to lose?
- 16:32Speaker 6: Listen, I give you a break.
- 16:35Speaker 3: They could have come in here and got you and
- 16:37Speaker 3: torn you.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Up in little pieces.
- 16:39Speaker 6: But I said no.
- 16:41Speaker 4: One little word.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Now, long after you are gone, I have to live
- 16:44Speaker 3: in this town. You've got your troubles.
- 16:47Speaker 6: I've got mine.
- 16:48Speaker 3: That's the way things work.
- 16:49Speaker 4: What's the matter with this town? Why does it act
- 16:51Speaker 4: the way it does?
- 16:52Speaker 3: After what you did, you expect them to treat you
- 16:55Speaker 3: with brotherly love?
- 16:56Speaker 4: You got to be born here before they think you're human?
- 16:59Speaker 4: There's a lot of world outside this flea-bitten town, and
- 17:02Speaker 4: most of it's better. They should be happy that someone
- 17:04Speaker 4: brings a little of it in with them once in
- 17:06Speaker 4: a while.
- 17:07Speaker 3: What you brought in was tragedy.
- 17:09Speaker 4: But it was an accident, a statistic. The kind of
- 17:12Speaker 4: thing insurance companies make a fortune predicting. Don't blame me.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Blame that big wheel of chance.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Dixie.
- 17:19Speaker 4: I just didn't get the right number on this spin,
- 17:21Speaker 4: that's all.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Well, you've got now 30 minutes to think of another one.
- 17:32Speaker 6: What can I do for you, Dixie? Tell me something.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Just let me alone.
- 17:37Speaker 6: Well, I'm going to do something anyway. Did you turn
- 17:42Speaker 6: on the radio? I turned on the radio.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Turn it off.
- 17:45Speaker 6: I'm not going to.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Turn it off!
- 17:46Speaker 6: I'm not going to!
- 17:48Speaker 4: What do you want music for?
- 17:50Speaker 6: Because I want to dance.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Are you crazy?
- 17:52Speaker 6: Oh, come on, Dixie, dance with me. Come on, it
- 17:55Speaker 6: used to take your mind off things.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Oh, I know, but I.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Oh, come on, come on, that's it. Oh, pull me closer, Dixie.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Oh, I wish this hadn't happened. So I could enjoy you, Julia. Oh.
- 18:13Speaker 9: Let's just pretend this is the future. And we're dancing
- 18:16Speaker 9: somewhere in love and.
- 18:18Speaker 4: What can I think like that when all I can
- 18:20Speaker 4: see are those guys down there loading buckshot and guns
- 18:23Speaker 4: just to.
- 18:23Speaker 6: Dixie, Dixie, shh, shh, shh. Just dance.
- 18:27Speaker 4: But I can still think.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Oh, honey, this is wonderful.
- 18:33Speaker 4: You know, I've played for a lot of dances. I
- 18:38Speaker 4: never realized until now what it does to you inside.
- 18:42Speaker 4: What does it do to you, Dixie? Makes me wish
- 18:45Speaker 4: I'd have gone to high school. I never got there.
- 18:49Speaker 14: That was Early Autumn, done by the Woody Herman Aggregate,
- 18:53Speaker 14: the band that plays the blues.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Not that you're blue right now.
- 18:59Speaker 14: And this is Charlie Schaefer, your early evening platter party
- 19:01Speaker 14: host on KNOK. And I want to remind you that
- 19:05Speaker 14: if you have any request whatsoever, just dial KNOK. The
- 19:09Speaker 14: switchboards are waiting. Now, how about a little bit of
- 19:13Speaker 14: Glenn Miller, In the Mood?
- 19:17Speaker 4: I like that. I can request any tune in the world,
- 19:21Speaker 4: but I can't save my life. What a great place
- 19:24Speaker 4: to live.
- 19:25Speaker 6: Let's dance some more.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. What should I request? Don't break the news
- 19:28Speaker 4: to Mother, or maybe I'm in the mood for life.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Oh, Dixie, don't talk like that. Dixie?
- 19:37Speaker 4: Give me the railroad station.
- 19:39Speaker 8: Um.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Uh, freight division.
- 19:41Speaker 6: Dixie, what are you doing?
- 19:42Speaker 4: Stop talking. Hello?
- 19:44Speaker 5: Hello?
- 19:46Speaker 4: Um, what time does the next freight train leave? Yeah. I.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I have some.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Valuable freight I want to put on board. Oh. An hour, huh?
- 19:59Speaker 4: Are you sure the time? Exactly one hour? Well, I...
- 20:05Speaker 4: I guess there wouldn't be time tonight. Thanks anyway.
- 20:08Speaker 6: Dixie, you just couldn't get to that train.
- 20:10Speaker 4: It's my only chance, but I need an hour. An
- 20:12Speaker 4: hour of safety to get to it.
- 20:14Speaker 6: I'll be right back.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Where are you going?
- 20:16Speaker 9: To find a policeman or to talk to those men
- 20:18Speaker 9: or to do something.
- 20:19Speaker 4: The police are all over in another town. They couldn't
- 20:22Speaker 4: get here in time.
- 20:22Speaker 6: You just wait here. I'll be right back.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Emily, if... If anybody caught me on my knees like
- 20:39Speaker 4: this talking to you, I suppose they'd think I was crazy.
- 20:45Speaker 4: But I'm not. Emily, you know it was an accident.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Pure and simple. It wasn't my fault. Only nobody really
- 20:55Speaker 4: believes it. They're waiting for me outside. Your people... And
- 21:02Speaker 4: they want me in exchange for you. Only it isn't
- 21:06Speaker 4: an exchange. It's just blood revenge. An eye for an eye.
- 21:11Speaker 4: And it doesn't make sense. I know that saying all
- 21:15Speaker 4: this will never do you any good. But, Emily, I
- 21:20Speaker 4: just wanted you to hear how sorry I am. How
- 21:24Speaker 4: deeply and tragically sorry I am. Emily, have a good
- 21:31Speaker 4: long rest. Maybe someday I'll meet you in person again
- 21:34Speaker 4: and we'll talk about it. And that someday might be today.
- 21:40Speaker 12: Hey.
- 21:51Speaker 6: What are you doing down in the.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Lobby, young lady?
- 21:53Speaker 4: Where are you going?
- 21:53Speaker 9: Mr. Abdo, we've just got to do something. Get some
- 21:56Speaker 9: police or get rid of those men out there.
- 21:58Speaker 3: I have long ago sent somebody for the police, but
- 22:01Speaker 3: I don't expect them to get here.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Why don't you let him stay here longer?
- 22:05Speaker 3: Because I can only hold these men a while.
- 22:09Speaker 4: After that, they come in. I don't want to see it.
- 22:13Speaker 6: Why do these men want him?
- 22:16Speaker 3: I don't want to talk anymore.
- 22:18Speaker 6: Well, I'm going to find out. Where are you going, lady?
- 22:25Speaker 6: I want to ask you why you want Dixie. That
- 22:28Speaker 6: ought to be plain. He didn't kill that girl. It
- 22:31Speaker 6: wasn't his fault. You must have a better reason. Whose
- 22:35Speaker 6: little girl was it?
- 22:37Speaker 4: Yours?
- 22:39Speaker 6: Or yours?
- 22:40Speaker 3: Whose?
- 22:42Speaker 6: Is that why you want him? Because it was one
- 22:44Speaker 6: of your children?
- 22:45Speaker 12: Lady, you'd better go on about your business and leave
- 22:48Speaker 12: ours to us. We got our own reasons for getting
- 22:51Speaker 12: that skunk. What'd you find out, Julia? What happened?
- 23:07Speaker 6: Abdo's been trying to get the police.
- 23:08Speaker 4: They won't come. Don't worry. How many of their neighbors
- 23:11Speaker 4: do you think they'll shoot down to save me?
- 23:13Speaker 6: I don't know, Dixie. I don't know.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Look, I got five minutes, that's all. Five minutes to
- 23:17Speaker 4: walk out of here. And I need an hour.
- 23:20Speaker 6: I'm sure the ringleader of that gang... I talked with him.
- 23:24Speaker 6: I'm sure he's the father.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Oh, let's see. I give up.
- 23:29Speaker 6: But you can't, Dixie. You can't.
- 23:31Speaker 4: What do you expect me to do? Perform a miracle?
- 23:35Speaker 3: It's after. Let me in.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Are you.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Are you ready to go, son?
- 23:45Speaker 4: No, I'm not ready to go. I still got five minutes.
- 23:48Speaker 4: You must have made a mistake with the time. Your
- 23:51Speaker 4: time is up.
- 23:52Speaker 6: It is like.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Look at this watch. Look at it. Still better than
- 23:55Speaker 4: four minutes.
- 23:56Speaker 6: I'm sorry.
- 23:57Speaker 4: But now is the time.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Before they come in the hotel after you.
- 24:01Speaker 4: I don't get it. I don't get this whole setup.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Why did you bother to stop them once if you
- 24:07Speaker 4: send me out to them now?
- 24:09Speaker 3: I did what I felt I must do. For me,
- 24:12Speaker 3: that was enough.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Well, I'm not going. Do you understand? I'm not going.
- 24:17Speaker 4: They'll have to work to get me. Haven't you done
- 24:19Speaker 4: enough to me already? To you? The little girl you.
- 24:26Speaker 6: who was killed.
- 24:28Speaker 4: Was my little girl.
- 24:31Speaker 8: Oh.
- 24:34Speaker 4: Mr. Abdo, I'm... I'm really sorry. I'll go. You won't
- 24:43Speaker 4: have any more trouble from me.
- 24:46Speaker 6: I'm going with you, Dixie.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:48Speaker 3: I had to turn off the lights in the lobby.
- 24:51Speaker 8: Had to bite them.
- 24:54Speaker 6: Shall we take the elevator?
- 24:56Speaker 4: No, I need the stairs. I want to make it
- 24:58Speaker 4: last as long as I can. Dixie.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Not see I want to cry.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Who do I? But it wouldn't help. I'm having trouble
- 25:10Speaker 4: enough seeing now.
- 25:12Speaker 6: I'll go out with you and fight. Let me, Dixon.
- 25:15Speaker 4: You're going to stay right here in this lobby. You
- 25:17Speaker 4: said you'd do anything for me, and that's what I
- 25:19Speaker 4: want you to do.
- 25:21Speaker 6: How are you going to do it?
- 25:23Speaker 4: I'm going out. Turn right alongside the building, and then
- 25:26Speaker 4: I'm going to run. Run, you hear me? Then maybe somewhere, somehow,
- 25:31Speaker 4: I can find help. So long, Julia.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Dixie, I love you.
- 25:37Speaker 7: Good.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Take it easy.
- 25:40Speaker 8: Hold it and stay right where you are. Why should I?
- 25:52Speaker 6: Shut up.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Now, if you know what's good for you, walk over
- 25:55Speaker 3: to that car and make a track.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Take that gun out of my face.
- 25:57Speaker 8: Do what I tell you and stop talking. There he is.
- 26:02Speaker 8: All right, everyone, stay where you are. Hey, what do
- 26:04Speaker 8: you think you're trying to do?
- 26:05Speaker 15: I said stay where you are or I'll put a
- 26:07Speaker 15: bullet to the face of the first man who moves.
- 26:08Speaker 7: Are you going to let a guy get away with
- 26:10Speaker 7: a crime like that?
- 26:11Speaker 6: Baby killing? Whatever or not.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Come on, guys.
- 26:16Speaker 15: The next one will go through somebody's head. I want
- 26:18Speaker 15: you to notice this badge on my coat. You people
- 26:21Speaker 15: pay me to protect you and everybody against lawlessness in
- 26:24Speaker 15: this town. And I'm going to earn my money whether
- 26:26Speaker 15: you want me to or not. Some more police will
- 26:29Speaker 15: be here in two minutes and anybody standing around will
- 26:31Speaker 15: be arrested.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Now go on home. Break this up.
- 26:34Speaker 8: All the fun is over.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Can you drive? Thank you, officer.
- 26:41Speaker 8: I said can you drive?
- 26:42Speaker 4: Well, I could yesterday, but I don't know now. My knees... Well, try.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I've got to be ready for anything.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Where do I go? To jail.
- 26:50Speaker 8: That's all right, mister.
- 26:52Speaker 4: You'll be safe there. Hello. Hello, Julia. Would you care
- 27:13Speaker 4: to go and get that sandwich we talked about a
- 27:15Speaker 4: thousand years ago?
- 27:16Speaker 6: Oh, I'd love to, Dixie. What did they say?
- 27:21Speaker 4: The coroner acquitted me ten minutes ago. Accidental homicide.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Oh, that's wonderful. Well, what are you going to do now, Dixie?
- 27:30Speaker 4: Oh, just catch up with the band and drift, I guess.
- 27:34Speaker 6: Dixie, I don't suppose I could.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Go back with the band?
- 27:38Speaker 6: Well, just singing, that's all.
- 27:39Speaker 4: You could do a bigger job than that if you
- 27:41Speaker 4: want to.
- 27:42Speaker 12: You mean it?
- 27:42Speaker 6: Sure.
- 27:43Speaker 4: Look, here's your wedding ring. You know, I never threw
- 27:47Speaker 4: it away.
