Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / My Take On NASCAR Going To Mexico City & Richmond Losing a Cup Date
Transcript
- 0:03Happy Wednesday morning, everybody.
- 0:06Well, the legendary Gutter is very sad because the swimming
- 0:11pool's been getting a lot of attention.
- 0:14There she is, standing tall and proud.
- 0:19Starts real nice, comes away from the house.
- 0:22Hey Wallace, why don't you go to the Lowe's and get you a 45 and
- 0:29hold it close to the house? All right, so today's subject is
- 0:40Ben Kennedy, who owns NASCAR. He came out yesterday and said
- 0:48that Richmond Raceway is going to lose 1 date next year.
- 0:55Story in the garage area is that NASCAR is getting ready to come
- 0:58out with 2025 NASCAR schedule and in June I guess we are going
- 1:08down to Hermano Rodriguez down there in Mexico City.
- 1:12The NASCAR Cup Series is going to Mexico again.
- 1:18It was the Xfinity Series or Nationwide Series that I raced
- 1:22at I I've raced at Hermano Rodriguez about three times.
- 1:26I really enjoyed my time in Mexico.
- 1:29It was a fun track. And you know, Formula One has
- 1:33raced there, a Formula One their, their circuit ran through
- 1:37the stadium and back out. And we, we ran around the
- 1:41outside of the stadium. Actually, as we were coming
- 1:43around the stadium, you could look to the right and you're
- 1:46passing the ticket gate with your race car and then down the
- 1:50long front straightaway. So I, I like the idea that that
- 1:55NASCAR is going to Mexico. Yeah, I know the it's way up in
- 2:02the air up there. We, we did several different
- 2:04things to race in Mexico City. Mexico, the largest, the largest
- 2:10city, I believe in the world. Respond right here if I'm wrong,
- 2:14but I believe Mexico City, Mexico, largest city in the
- 2:18world. And so it was a good time.
- 2:22I will tell you, though, I never left my hotel.
- 2:26You got to watch your back down there.
- 2:29You got to watch your back. That's that's no joke.
- 2:32Richard Childress Racing. Some of those guys will tell you
- 2:35some stories. I don't know if they're true or
- 2:37not, but I believe that bunch store in the garage areas that
- 2:42Richard Childress Racing went out, went out partying one night
- 2:46did not end too well with them. But anyway, Hermano Rodriguez,
- 2:51great racetrack. I'm sure my amigo Daniel Suarez
- 2:54is very happy. All his amigos will will be
- 2:59excited that they're coming to his home home country of Mexico.
- 3:04So that's in the middle of June next year.
- 3:07I believe that's what respond right here.
- 3:09You know everything. What is it?
- 3:12June 14th, 1516, something like that.
- 3:16All right, one thing that's bothering me, the herminator
- 3:23right here was Mr. Richmond Raceway.
- 3:26Yes, I am. I won in that red Dog car and
- 3:32the TIC car. Did you ever wonder what TIC
- 3:36stand for? It stood for Transportation
- 3:41Industry Consultant. I drove for that Fillmore race
- 3:45team out of Nashville, TN Crew chief was Gil Martin, Newt
- 3:50Moore, all the big boys. That team ended up going to big
- 3:55Cup teams. So that film, our race team,
- 3:58they ended up having a lot of talent and that's why I won a
- 4:01lot with them. So I guess I'm just a little
- 4:05taken aback. We won Richmond 19949596.
- 4:13The Herminator got some good trophies from Richmond Raceway.
- 4:17That racetrack really suited me well and all I remember was the
- 4:21packed grandstands, standing room only.
- 4:25How about the guy remember, remember the guy there and turn
- 4:27forward and got so drunk that he went up on top the fence.
- 4:30Remember that legendary. Hey, somebody grabbed the
- 4:33picture and put it right here, if you don't mind, put it right
- 4:37here in this timeline. But anyway, Ben Kennedy says
- 4:40we're going to take a date away from Richmond and my has this
- 4:45racetrack fallen from grace? Why?
- 4:50Why has Richmond Raceway fallen from grace?
- 4:53Respond right here. My track.
- 4:57Now, my dear friend Max Pappas says something that I agree
- 5:01with. Max came out on the X timeline
- 5:05and he said Kenny, he said, you know, when race tracks don't do
- 5:11good, you get rid of one day and go to a road course.
- 5:15So I agree with Max. He says Formula One doesn't run
- 5:19twice at the same racetrack. I agree with that.
- 5:23I just I just shocked, you know, there's a study in these dates.
- 5:31Let's go do Atlanta, for example, Atlanta Motor Speedway.
- 5:35Just the attendance was past tense was horrible.
- 5:42And boy, Marcus Smith, he took a beating because he tore that
- 5:47racetrack up and he made a new racetrack.
- 5:50And everybody's like, you're stupid, you're dumb.
- 5:54And now Atlanta is the greatest racetrack of them all.
- 5:58Have you learned a lesson? Their children change is hard.
- 6:03When Marcus Smith was tearing the old Atlanta right, You know,
- 6:07Atlanta's been through three designs, the very old Atlanta,
- 6:11then the next new Atlanta where they moved the front
- 6:14straightaway to the back straightaway, that's Atlanta
- 6:16too. And now Atlanta 3.
- 6:19But Marcus changed this racetrack and last year, or
- 6:23earlier this year, excuse me, earlier this year, 2000, there
- 6:27went Louis the legend. 2024 was one of the greatest race
- 6:31finishes in NASCAR history. 3 wide at the line.
- 6:36And Daniel Suarez wanted, man, what a race that was.
- 6:40But what happened to Richmond? What happened to Richmond?
- 6:45The races were unbelievable. They they used to pack them in
- 6:50there. I will say that I will say this,
- 6:56love the town of Richmond, but the people just quit showing up.
- 7:01You, you would think that Richmond, VA was close to
- 7:04Washington, DC. We always had all the government
- 7:08people coming there. You know, it was such a such a
- 7:13great race track for, you know, some of our leaders in our
- 7:21defense, you know, the people that go to war, they were always
- 7:23coming to the Richmond Raceway. Just made a lot of sense, you
- 7:27know, But how in the hell do we lose one of the greatest race
- 7:33tracks in NASCAR history? Because the finishes were
- 7:37unbelievable. I, I don't think there's ever
- 7:39been a bad finish at Richmond. So today, today's I guess
- 7:47question begs is, is Max Pappas right?
- 7:53Respond right here. Does NASCAR need two dates at
- 7:58Martinsville? Does NASCAR need two dates at
- 8:03Bristol? Does NASCAR need two dates at
- 8:07Charlotte? That is the question.
- 8:11Should we go to all new tracks and just race one time at these
- 8:16tracks? Because Max Pappas, my dear
- 8:18friend, says Kenny Wallace, my dear friend, Formula One doesn't
- 8:22race 2 times at one track. I kind of got to agree with Max.
- 8:27You know, they paved Paradise put in a parking lot.
- 8:33Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got till
- 8:37it's gone? Don't it always seem to go that
- 8:42you don't know what you got till it's gone?
- 8:46They paid Paradise put in a parking lot, lot, lot.
- 8:50Richmond Raceway is down to one day.
- 8:54Keep it up, everybody, and we'll be down to one racetrack a year,
- 9:00and then that will make you like it because less is more.
- 9:04And while we're at it, do you also agree with Dale Earnhardt
- 9:08Junior? We race too much.
- 9:11Respond right here. Do we race too much?
- 9:15Dale Junior says the NFL does it right.
- 9:18They only play so many games a year and it's always over early
- 9:23and they leave you wanting for more.
- 9:26So the question is, is Dale Junior right?
- 9:30Do we race too much and is Max Pappas right?
- 9:34Should we only race one time at each race track?
