[instrumental music] Join us for our fabulous modern interpretive dance edition of the Weekly Dose of Fat with your host, Sven.
• 0:26
We will wear bells around our ankles as proof of this majestic and folkloric dance. A- and across the desk from me is the inimitable Mr. JK Living, everybody. Thanks to Surly for sponsoring our show.
• 0:41
Surly makes bikes and parts that don't suck, like me. Learn more at surlybikes.com..com. Hey, JK, tell our listener what we've got in store on the show this particular evening.
• 0:56
This week we'll talk to Dave Schlabowski about Chris' Slow Roll to celebrate bike industry veteran, Mr. Chris Kegel. Our special guest this week is the in absentia Mr.
• 1:09
Uncle Gomez, as he calls in from Lost Wages with all the schwag-tastic news from the Interbike outdoor dirt demo in Boulder City, plus possibly a peek at what was happening on the f- show floor on Wednesday.
• 1:25
We'll delve into beers and beer. Our crack panel will discuss the 10 best essentials to keep in your frame pack, and we'll share links from the interwebs. [bell ringing] It's the top of the hill.
• 1:42
Top of the hill [laughs] Top of the hill already, folks. Top of the house rover. We'll have, uh, Mr. Dave Schlabowski on the line in here in, uh, in just a couple of minutes, but, uh, meanwhile,
• 1:50
we've resurrected, somewhat, the, uh, the beer segment of the show where we'll just have a little bit more [laughs] to talk about than, uh, Dale's Pale Ale. This is, um, a seasonal from Founders. It's Mosaic Promise.
• 2:08
It's got a pretty label. Pretty... It's a single hop ale. I will give it a swallow now and then we'll tell you a little bit about what we learned about it over at The Beer Advocate. Well, it got a 91 on the ye old...
• 2:21
Wow, that's something else. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's, that's pretty good. Yeah, 5.5 ABV, so it's not knee-walkin' [laughs] Right, right. Yeah. Had a few of those in the past. And
• 2:34
those bitter IBUs [laughs] Yeah, I don't even- 10.50 50. Kinda in the middle of the road a little bit. Yeah, it's got flavor. Flavor all over the place. Oh, yeah. I'm gonna give it a couple more swallows.
• 2:49
[laughs] How's the, uh, how's the beard thing going? Uh, it's continuing. It's going outwards and [laughs] Yes. Yes, it is Outwards, out- out- outwards and downwards. Yeah, I can see that from here.
• 3:02
And I've, I've got a wedding in, like, two weeks that I have to [laughs] kind of figure out how to negotiate that and the mop on the head. Right on. [laughs] Well, we have a caller. Let's see who we have on the line.
• 3:18
Welcome to the radio program. Mr. Smith, it's Mr. Sevo. How are you doing, sir? Hey, Sevo, you're, you're, uh, out there in Vegas, huh? That I am. Cool. For better or for worse.
• 3:31
Are you, uh, are you having fun at the Interbike yet? Uh, it's really been slow as far as the show itself goes. Like, the, the traffic just isn't nearly what it's been in the past. Okay.
• 3:43
Um- I think we, we kinda heard a little bit about that going into it with a lot of the majors doing, like, their own dealer shows and, you know, doing separate events outside the, the, uh, Interbike, uh, canopy.
• 3:57
[laughs] Well, and when you see, um, fairly big names not there, like, you know, your Rocky Mountain's not there and Velocity is not there, people that were always at this in the past,
• 4:10
um, and like Dirt Demo is really anemic as well on Monday. Yeah, we're gonna- Like I, I've seen local demos get more people. Right on. We're gonna talk to Gomez a little later.
• 4:18
He was out there on, uh, Monday and Tuesday I believe, so maybe he's got, uh, some stuff to report. I saw you, you got some pictures of some stuff.
• 4:25
There's still cool things happening in the fat bike space and a lot of stuff in the plus bike space, so, uh- Oh, yeah, the plus bike stuff, I mean, just wa- walking around you can definitely see that plus is,
• 4:36
um, a very universal thing that everybody has out showing off, so a lot of new tires from different companies, so. Cool.
• 4:46
Um, well, we've got, uh, we've got a caller calling in that we're gonna talk to about an event, and, uh, you wanna just hang out for a little bit? Sure. Okay, I'm gonna put you back in the queue. Talk to you in a bit.
• 4:58
All right, everybody, it's time for the, uh, the event of the week. Um, this week it's a little bit of a somber event.
• 5:05
You know, sometimes we, we get some news we'd rather not get, and Chris' Slow Roll is a ride to celebrate the life of Chris Kegel. He's a, a b- a bike industry legend.
• 5:14
He's actually a local guy, so I think everybody around here knows him. He owns the Wheel & Sprocket chain of bike shops that's been around forever in the, the southeast Wisconsin area.
• 5:24
He was, uh, he was recently diagnosed with a rare and fast-paced form of cancer, um, and he's, he... Prognosis isn't great.
• 5:32
So, um, to tell us more about the ride and the celebration of all that Chris has meant to the bike industry, we've got Bike Fed of Wisconsin's Dave Schlabowski on the line to give us, uh, specifics of the ride, a little more about Chris, and the day's events that are happening this Sunday, September 25th, in Milwaukee.
• 5:49
Welcome, Dave. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks, Lockrid.
• 5:52
Yeah, um, I wish I was, uh, calling in under, under a little bit more, uh, um, sunny circumstances, but, um, you know, uh, the upside of this is, is that, uh, we really do get to celebrate, um- The life of a guy who is really a, a cycling legend, um, not just around here, but, but in the United States, across the country, um, and, and really beyond.
• 6:14
I was in visiting Chris at the hospital the other day, and, uh, there were people in here from all across the country, um, v- inside visiting him. Uh, there was one guy who heard about it.
• 6:26
He was, uh, up, uh, camping, uh, camping in his, uh, RV up in Ottawa, and as soon as he heard about it, he, like, uh, pulled up stakes and, and drove straight through, uh, to Milwaukee.
• 6:36
And he's, uh, he's got his RV set up now at, uh, at the State Fair Park where the, where the ride is gonna start on Sunday. So- Right on... so yeah, Chris, you know, yeah, he, he was...
• 6:47
In addition to, you know, owning The Wheel & Sprocket and, and, you know, providing ride support for, you know, uh, hundreds of rides around Wisconsin, uh, for, for decades, Chris has, has been, you know, on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Bike Fed, on the board of directors for the League of American Bicyclists, on the board of directors for IMBA, uh, on the board of directors for the, you know, Bicycle Dealers Association.
• 7:11
So I mean, on and on and on. Yeah, yeah, for sure. Um, and he's been doing this stuff for, you know, decades, and always, anybody that knows Chris, always with a smile on his face.
• 7:22
Um, he is, like, the m- most likable guy you'll meet in the bike industry, and there's lots of reasons that many, [laughs] many in the bike industry will tell you, um, although it's fun to be in it, um, there are oftentimes reasons not to smile.
• 7:35
But I've never seen Chris when he wasn't smiling, so. Yeah, I mean, I see- Um, so anyway- I used to see, see him regularly riding his tandem. You know? He's riding all over the place. [coughs] Or, a tandem. Sorry.
• 7:45
Well, yeah. He, he- Re- recumbent, I should say... he, yeah, right. He, he, he walks the walk and rides the ride, you know.
• 7:51
Um, uh, for years he, he lived up in, up in Mequon and, and commuted daily to the store in Hales Corners. Um, he now lives in Milwaukee.
• 8:01
But, uh, but, uh, yeah, he, he, he rides, you know, thousands of miles a year, um, and, and really, really is, is an, an inspiration. To me, has been for...
• 8:12
I bought my first adult bike from him, uh, way back when, when I was a professional photographer in, in the store in Hales Corners. It was over on Forest Home. Um- Mm-hmm. Yep...
• 8:22
and, uh, and he's been an inspiration ever since then for me, uh, both in advocacy and, and, you know, and just, uh, beyond that in, in, uh, how to, uh, be a salmon swimming upstream for so long and, and keep a positive attitude about it.
• 8:37
Um, and, uh, so, um, so I was in visiting, as I said, and, and Chris would really... said he'd really like to have a bike ride for him.
• 8:46
Um, and so, uh, all the folks at Trek who've been in visiting were immediately jumped on board, and, and so they're pulling out all the stops. They're printing T-shirts that are gonna be free. They're bringing in tents.
• 8:58
They're buying the food for the party at Cagle's Inn afterwards. Um, there's gonna be, uh... Uh, of course, there's a Packer game on, and, and nobody will wanna miss that. I'll, um...
• 9:07
So there's gonna be a big screen TV outside. Um, they're blocking off- [laughs]... the street outside of Cagle's Inn. Um, and, and there's no cost for any of this stuff.
• 9:16
It's all just a celebration of, of, you know, Chris Cagle. Um, so- So, so the ri- So hopefully we can really blow this up. Right on.
• 9:24
The ride gets, uh, underway at 10:00, but people start meeting about 9:00 at, uh, State Fair Park. Yeah, right. Yeah, right. And that's to pick up a T-shirt and stuff like that.
• 9:33
And we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna meet in the parking lot by, uh, the Pettit Center, the park and, park-and-ride spot there, um, uh, 76th and, and Adler. You can get at it from 84th and Adler, too.
• 9:46
They're meeting there just because there are so many people coming in from out of town that, uh, they wanted a big parking lot for people to park and, and, and get on their bikes.
• 9:54
So then we'll head east on the Hank Aaron State Trail, which is right there, and, uh, and we'll ride down to Lakeshore State Park, where there are gonna be a bunch of banners up, up that, uh, people can sign and leave a nice little note for, for Chris.
• 10:07
Um, and then we're gonna ride back to the party at Cagle's Inn. And, uh, we'll also have a bunch of people on, on the route shooting stills and, and some video.
• 10:16
Um, if you go to chriscagle.com, they're collecting stories, uh, about... that people... little vignettes of people's memories of Chris and, and how he's impacted their life in a positive way.
• 10:27
And so w- w- we're gonna have some, some shooters on, on the ride, uh, doing short little interviews. So, uh, so watch for me. I'll have a camera, and, and a handful of other people will be there doing the same.
• 10:38
All right, man. Well, thanks for taking time out of your evening to tell us about this. Um, I think everybody that can go should go. It's Sunday, September 25th. That's, like, two days from now.
• 10:50
And, uh- Yeah, this Sunday, yeah. Right, right. And, uh, State Fair Park, easy to find. And, uh, hope to see you there. Thanks a lot, Dave. Okay. All right. Thank you. Thanks a lot, guys. Okay. Bye. Bye-bye. All righty.
• 11:05
Dave Schlabowske telling us about that ride. Sounds like something I'll be at. Yeah. I, I was doing the math in my head while you- [laughs]... talked. Like, "What time do I have to get up to make it?"
• 11:14
I'm like, yeah, what... It's like- [laughs] Well, let's, uh, go ahead and take a break here, and when we come back, we're gonna call Mr. Uncle Senior Gomez out there in, uh, Las Vegas.
• 11:26

• 12:12
And we're back with our special guest, Gomez. Sven is punching his digits now. Punching digits to see if we can, uh- Beep, beep, boop... get our friend Uncle Gomez on the phone here. Beep, boop. It's doing its thing.
• 12:29
I don't know what that thing is. It happens, like, with squirrels and lions that go above the, the desert and stuff. Do you need something to assist you with using your telephoning device? Bueno. Hey, there he is.
• 12:41
It's Uncle Gomez coming through five by five from out there in Las Vegas. Happy hump day. Way. How are- Way... how are you doing, sir? I'm good. I'm good, man. You got there Monday, is that right?
• 12:57
Yeah, Monday, the red-eye. So, uh, it was 100 degrees that day. The show progressed. Right on. I put stuff on the internet. Yeah. [laughs] So, well, obviously, obviously you made it- So, it's been-...
• 13:09
you made it out there. You, you reported on what you saw. Uh- Yeah, yeah, yeah... w- what it, what is- So are we gonna talk about that? Is that- Yeah... is that, uh- Well, sure... that what we're gonna do?
• 13:19
We could talk about that. You're, you're the- All right... you're the, uh, the, the man on the scene. You're the, you're the street reporter. You're the person with the, uh, the knowledge.
• 13:26
Lay on us what you wanna lay on us, and, uh- Yeah, I have, I have the media badge and, uh, and, and the dirty shoes, and the dirty knees. So, [clears throat]
• 13:37
as you might have heard, the outdoor dirt demo was remarkably smaller. I mean, like, empty real estate, like- I s- [laughs]... at least 50% smaller. I saw, I saw- As far as-... a guy who had a- As far as-...
• 13:53
a canopy company that was trying to fill his canopy. [laughs] The, uh, um- [coughs] So, so that's the first thing is there were fewer bikes that you could demo.
• 14:07
But I don't think that the crowds as far as the dealers, I think none of the dealers really caught the memo, and there was a good crowd of people to ride. So the people that did have bikes were slinging a lot of bikes.
• 14:24
Yeah. Uh, and the trails were- I read, I read somewhere that, uh-... full of bikes... I was gonna say I read somewhere that Pivot was just, um, slammed, that they couldn't keep them on the rack.
• 14:34
Everybody was on the mountain. Yeah, many times I had to, I had to wait to get a bike- Wait, what?... that I wanted to ride. What? What? Don't, don't they know who you are? [laughs] Dude, yeah.
• 14:47
So and I never got to ride this Cannondale bike that I wanted to ride 'cause they were always gone, so.
• 14:54
So the people that were there really got a lot of people on their bikes, and I think that that's, it's kind of a strategic advantage for some companies that did go there, that they got their new wares shown.
• 15:09
For instance, Otso, man, that, that company got a leg up because there weren't that many.
• 15:16
Now, Surly had their full new demo fleet going, but you know, there weren't-- They didn't have to compete with a bunch of other carbon fat bikes. Uh, I got to ride that bike. I thought it rode really well.
• 15:30
Um, there's a ton of innovation, uh, coming from them, that 80 milli- 83-millimeter bottom bracket shell, um- So would-... with a narrower Q factor...
• 15:42
would you consider this then, you know, it's kinda being on the cutting edge in 2016, like a generation three fat bike? We kinda went through the original- Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
• 15:52
So do you think- Yeah, this has the sliding dropouts that we've seen from Pivot and Trek and a couple of other companies, and it also has the narrow Q factor.
• 16:03
Pivot said that they have a narrow Q factor, but it's 100 millimeter shell still. Okay.
• 16:09
So I mean, this is really a, a one-of-a-kind fat and plus bike because they had their demo fleet split right down the middle with 27.5 plus tires
• 16:25
and half the fleet having 26 by, uh, by four-inch tires, all with the new Terrene tires as well. And we'll be talking to Tim Kreider a little bit later, and he's involved with both of those companies. Yeah. Um- Cool...
• 16:40
they also had a really cool handlebar bag that's fairly small, kinda replaces the gas tank bag. I really think it's the gas tank bag to the next level. Has a magnetically self-closing top.
• 16:56
Perfect size to put my camera in. I'm telling you, I'm-- my camera's gonna just live there forever. It's, like, the perfect fit for a little, uh, three-fifths, four-thirds, whatever that camera is. Yeah.
• 17:08
A little point-and-shoot. I saw how you had it mounted sideways on your handlebar. That's a, a cool way to mount it. Yeah. An easy- Yeah, and that's the way it-... easy access... that's the way it's designed to go.
• 17:16
Yeah, that- Yeah... well, that makes a lot of sense for- So-... whipping a camera out for sure, or food or- And what-... glassware, whatever... what else?
• 17:23
Yeah, that's what it's, that's what it's kind of for is for snacking, but I saw it and I was like, "Oh, my camera. Perfecto fit." So we're going to get a, uh, demo bike
• 17:34
from the folks at Otso, and Ken from Fat Camp is gonna do the, uh, review on that, so it's an extra large demo bike. I was gonna say they have to make an XL then, don't they? Probably. [laughs] Sizing for tall people.
• 17:48
Yeah, that's what they definitely do. Right on. Yeah. So Surly was out there. They had all of their new demo bikes, so all of the Ice Cream Trucks are yellow and, uh, the Wednesdays are burgundy.
• 18:02
That, that's a very- So, uh-... interesting color. If you captured that in the photos I saw on our site, that's a, that's a pretty stunning color. It is very deep, deep, deep dark red
• 18:14
And, uh, the, the big news out of Surly was that they had a brand-new Krampus, and, uh, they had the demo fleet set up with the Manitou front fork. Excuse me, taking a drink of water there. Drink of water.
• 18:31
Um- Quench that desert thirst. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And the, uh... So I got to ride that bike. That's, uh, that, that really made [laughs] me wanna trade, trade up and get the new Krampus.
• 18:45
They shortened the chainstays, they kept the rad, wide, slack front end, and, uh, it really is, it rides really nice.
• 18:55
Um- So is, is there still a 29+ or have they, uh, gone in this direction just for the whole Krampus model? Uh, no, Krampus is 29+, so I don't know, I don't know why I said no, but, uh, yeah, it, it is 29+, the Krampus.
• 19:09
And then the Karate Monkey, which is also new- [laughs]... uh, they have a single speed version of that that is 29er, and then they have a 1x11 version of it that is 27.5+.
• 19:26
So, and they had all of those bikes there. Um, we, I saw a ton of people riding Surlys, and that was the company that I thought, "Wow, those guys are just slinging those bikes out the door, um, like crazy." Very cool.
• 19:40
So, uh, I mentioned Terrene tires. I wanna say terrain, but it's Terrene. Yeah. Terrene tires. It, it's one of those interesting words- [laughs]...
• 19:51
'cause they ran out of most of the other, you know, easily accessible words. Right, right, but people are gonna call it terrain. So they had, they have a B+ tire called The Chunk, which is, lives up to its name.
• 20:05
I rode that tire on a, uh, a Duke, uh, and, oh man, a Duke is pretty sweet.
• 20:12
Um, and they also have a Waziya fat bike tire, which w- it's, it's, you know, it's been on the internet before, but I got to see the studs up close and I should let, uh, Tim do his stud talk, but they're taller for deeper penetration- Is it, why, is he gonna talk about you?
• 20:30
Is that what, you have to let him talk about you? Uh, yeah. Uh, no. Um- [laughs] Nope... the, uh, so I rode both those tires, and both are, you know, good. I, you know, I didn't ride them for, for long term, but damn.
• 20:47
You know, and that's not, you know, you've ridden out there, it's a lot of loose, decomposed granite, sand, it's, uh, and rock, so- Yeah, for sure...
• 20:59
it's, uh, the- There's a lot of sharp edges and the- You need a chunky tire Yep, for sure. And it's a chunky tire. You'll, look at the pictures, man. That's on- And all of those tires-... fatbike.com...
• 21:08
come, uh, in a light casing and then also an enduro casing, and, uh, all of the, the sidewall reinforcements, et cetera, are different on those, um, on all of their tires. I had the full, full presentation from Mr. Tim.
• 21:27
All right. And, um, so those, that, that looks like a lively brand. And I think Tim- Lively... is the shining light of newness at the Interbike. And, you know, Otso and all of those other things. Uh, so
• 21:44
something that isn't new, but they were there, and had their wares there, and have an improvement to their hubs are the folks from Onyx Racing.
• 21:52
So Jim showed me his little clamp-on seal that will go on the outside of all of their hubs that make them just completely water and, and, uh, dust-proof, so- Sweet... uh, he was pretty excited about that.
• 22:07
He's like, "You got babies with you. Here, take these." Those are on my, those are on my 27+ bike right now And I got- For sure. Sure. I got to ride his
• 22:15
bike from Lamaire, and here's maybe, maybe, maybe this is the biggest news, is, like, JP Lamaire, his Dopamine full suspension, I rode it as a 29+ with a, uh,
• 22:31
with a lefty Olaf on it, and that, that's Jim's personal ride, so it was set up for my weight, and damn if that isn't the nicest bike. I wanted to hate that bike [laughs] But this is like, oh, damn. It's pretty sweet.
• 22:49
I, I love how silent that hub is. Yeah. It's just, you can sneak up on bears, and deer, and people and whatnot. I wasn't even thinking of that [laughs] when I was riding it, but yeah, uh, that, that bike is, is sexy.
• 23:01
That, and, and just ridiculously cushy, and [sighs] yeah. Hey, hey, speaking of sexy- Really good... uh, we have, uh, one Mr. Tim Krieger that we've been, uh, talking about here on the line right now. Welcome, Tim.
• 23:18
Oh, yeah. Well, hello. Tim Krieger, how's it going? Wow, Tim- How's it- Tim is very- Pretty good. How are you guys tonight? [laughs] We're good. [laughs] Tim, Tim is, like, super loud. That's awesome. You're good.
• 23:29
All right. Oh, yeah, I'm, uh, I'm at, I'm at a casino right now, so, you know, I gotta talk loud just so y'all can hear me. [laughs] Killer. We've been talking a little bit about, uh, some of your stuff. Oh, thanks.
• 23:42
You know, feel like I got that right. Yep, we are out here at, uh, we are out here at Interbike right now.
• 23:48
Yep, launching Terrene Tires, a brand-new tire brand from, uh, several people in the bike industry with a history of tire development, and we're trying to launch the first rider-focused tire brand to build products that are actually how we're, uh, we're all using our bicycles today.
• 24:05
That sounds like something that- I-... every rider should want. [laughs] Yeah. I got to ride the, your first two tires, and I have to say, thumbs up. Well done. That Chunk, I think-...
• 24:17
is prob- probably if you, did you have Bootleg Canyon, like, in your mind [laughs] when you designed that tire? Because it just seems like the tire that I would wanna take to that kinda abrasive, rocky conditions.
• 24:33
Yeah, well, I think that's, uh, not Bootleg in particular, but just trails in mind.
• 24:37
I think one of the things that's missing in tire product development is that, is actually looking at how a mountain bike tire is going to be used and, and, and where- Mm-hmm...
• 24:47
it's gonna be used and, and what it needs to do. I think too many times the, uh, the companies are worried about how they're gonna market the tire and what the posted weight is going to be. Um- Mm-hmm...
• 24:59
and so they, they might skimp, skimp on tread design or skimp on casing toughness in order to get a lower posted weight that looks better online. Um, fortunately for us, none of us ride bikes online. Um- [laughs]...
• 25:11
and we actually ride bikes in the real world, right? Yeah, try- So, uh-... light cycles and trying- So we're, you know, we're, we're designing a bunch of tires that are actually designed to ride in the real world.
• 25:21
Killer. Yeah. I, I, I live in the real world. So tell me- [laughs]... a little bit about, fill us in a little bit about the studs.
• 25:30
We were just kinda talking about how your studs are longer, thinner, concave, and tri-pointed. We actually didn't go into that much, but I'm just, I'm trying to, trying to lead you into some stud talk. Yeah, sure.
• 25:46
So with studs, um, there's kinda two theories that, uh, in how studs work, and one of them would be surface area, and one of them would be penetrating the ice. Penetrating. Um, in the sense that... Yeah.
• 25:59
We, uh, we chose to penetrate the ice. [laughs] Um, and it, think of it like an ice ax and how an ice ax works, right? An ice ax, you don't want, uh, a large surface area with your ice ax.
• 26:11
You want a point that's going to dig deep into the ice and hold onto it, right? Mm-hmm. So we made a, we made a stud that has three points to it, uh, kinda like a crown, and that is designed to be super sharp.
• 26:24
In fact, um, they're sharper than anything else out there. When you're handling the tire, you actually have to be careful not to cut your knuckle. Um- Oh, yeah...
• 26:33
and it's a tall, it's a taller stud than other items on the market.
• 26:37
And the combination of those two, the, the science behind how the stud works is that as opposed to trying to get surface area of a sharp, uh, surface and kinda grab the ice from the side, it's actually designed to deeply penetrate the ice like an ice ax and hold tight.
• 26:55
And so we found, uh, with that stud design, we found a lot of superior traction.
• 27:00
So what we did is we actually, um, we found how many studs were necessary to truly make a ridable tire, and we were able to reduce the stud count to 154 studs on our tire, which, uh, keeps the same overall traction of the tire, which as we know, stud tires, most stud tires we can pretty much go and do nose wheelies on glare ice today 'cause they're so good.
• 27:24
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Um, but we've, uh, to keep that, to keep that traction, we reduced it to 154 studs, uh, which reduces the overall weight of the tire. Are the aluminum sombrero with the carbide point, right?
• 27:39
So there's a light stud. Yeah, of course. I mean, that's a, there's an, there's definitely an industry standard for a bicycle, uh, stud shape. Uh, kinda we all refer to it as the top hat. Um, you know- That's a-...
• 27:49
where it inserts with a, with a, with a bigger disc that holds it into the tire. But yeah, we use a, a design with an aluminum top hat, uh, with a tungsten carbide insert that's pressed it, uh, into the aluminum.
• 28:02
So I can stud- Yeah. Any tire that's homed-... some other tire then with my, with your new studs? Is that gonna be a possibility, upgrading to the, uh, penetrating stud versus the, uh, surface area stud?
• 28:13
Yeah, most definitely we'll have, um, we'll have that stud kit, uh, available after market. Mix and match your studs, folks, and that'd give you a real fun ride. That's right. There we go.
• 28:23
[laughs] Tim is, Tim is not only in the stud business- [laughs]... but... So yeah, the, since we have you on the phone, we really wanted to kinda- Yeah... talk to you about, um... Well, before we get into how much of
• 28:40
new business, new fat bike and plus bike business that you're involved with- Mm-hmm... maybe give us a, uh, what your thoughts are on Interbike. We were just talking about Outdoor Demo being, you know- Yeah...
• 28:52
much smaller. Uh, tell me, tell me what your thoughts are about the show. Yeah, it's definitely getting smaller, and that's starting to concern me.
• 29:01
Um, you know, there's a lot of, there's actually a lot of chatter on the internet right now amongst, uh, we'll say, the industry types about how Interbike is dying.
• 29:10
And, you know, some people are, are almost, um, happy to see it go, uh, lauding the fact that, you know, they can get better value out of their own events and things like that.
• 29:21
And I do see, like, that is the reason Interbike is, uh, is definitely declining, and it's because the big brands are taking on their own... You know, they can put on their own events. Right.
• 29:32
So they, so they- I don't think that's very good for- Yeah... and then con- and then completely control the messaging. Yeah, have a captive audience, for sure. Exactly, and that's where... I don't think that...
• 29:40
That's exactly where I'm going next, is I don't think that's very good for our industry, 'cause what's happening is, yeah, those, those, those large brands are able to create a captive audience and to selectively pick what shops they want there and tell them what they want to tell them, uh, and basically make, you know, make an end result that they, that is best for them.
• 30:01
And what it does is it cuts out the small independent retailer who may not qualify to go to the big show for the big company. Uh, it cuts- Right...
• 30:09
out the new retailer who's just starting up and nobody knows who they are. And it all cuts out, it also cuts out the small independent brand who are really driving innovation in our industry, right?
• 30:19
So- Um, it, uh, it's gonna be an interesting thing to watch, but I am actually, I'm very concerned and I'm actually saddened that it's a shrinking show because it is, um, because it's the only really independent show we have left that's not being controlled about who gets to go and who doesn't get to go by some, uh, bike brand or, or distribution brand.
• 30:40
Um, it's kind of the last bastion for, uh, for the truly independent to, to meet and greet and get, uh, get what they need. Yeah, and those independent bike dealers, you know, that's the backbone. Uh,
• 30:55
we, we take them for granted, but when you need something, when you have, you know, uh, when you need something worked on that you can't figure out, you're looking for that independent bike dealer, and when those companies disappear, and I don't, I don't live in a big city and I kind of gotta drive ways to get to a good bike shop with a good service department.
• 31:19
Uh, uh, those, uh, those retailers are the backbone of, of the fat bike movement. I mean, you think about the shops that created their own brands, those were all independent bike dealers. So
• 31:35
it's, uh, it, it is-- I mean, [laughs] I was driving back to, uh, the hotel, and I was, I was starting to actually get like-- I was getting a little pissed about it, but, you know. Yeah, I mean, exactly.
• 31:48
It's, it's- Would we all, would, would we all wanna go get the, the latest, greatest fat bike toy, and we all wanna go kinda hang out with a, uh, with a good dose of cycling culture?
• 31:57
I mean, none of us are going to the factory-backed chain stores, right? We're going to our local independents who definitely knows what's up and what's cool, right? Those, those- Right...
• 32:08
are definitely the guys we need to support, and, uh, those are the guys this show is for. Yeah, right on. Right on. Preaching to the choir. Well, uh, you certainly- Preaching to the choir...
• 32:17
you certainly brought your, uh, brought your A game to- [laughs]... to Interbike. [laughs] Hey- Now let's-... yeah... talk about, uh... Go ahead. Oh, go ahead. I, I-- keep it moving. We've got, uh, we've got Mr.
• 32:31
Tupper on the line. He's listening to us, uh, chatter here for a little while. And, uh, if you guys wanna join in- All right...
• 32:36
we did, we did have a segment about, uh, frame bags, but let's, uh, let's finish with your, your guys' stuff and then maybe we can talk about that stuff. Hang out, Tupper. [laughs] Well, first of all- All right...
• 32:48
hi, Tupper. How's it going, buddy? [laughs] Um, but yeah, you were, uh, you were saying, Gomez, uh, uh, about my, uh, my dream little empire here. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 32:59
We, we talked about, man, you have, you have your hand in a lot of new companies.
• 33:04
And, you know, the, the bike that, that I kinda picked as the, the best bike I saw at the outdoor demo was the Otso Voytek, and you had a big hand in developing that, so tell us about that. Yeah, I mean, and that's it.
• 33:20
Since I, since I went independent, uh, almost exactly two years ago, um, it's definitely-- it's been to where I wanted to support, uh, and create independent and new things and be innovative again, right?
• 33:33
Like, um, I found myself kinda end up going down a, a route, uh, didn't wanna go down. So I wanted to get, uh, to be an independent and really support the independent bike brands again.
• 33:44
So what I've done is, uh, I've-- between the minutes of, uh, building my own companies and consulting for other companies, um, definitely wanted to...
• 33:54
I guess the best way to say it is I wanna give the resources, the resources behind, um, whether it's supply chain manufacturing, um, logistics and importing, that, uh, a big company may have, and kinda access that by having a bunch of small companies band together, right?
• 34:12
So yeah, I mean, def- I've, uh, I've helped with Otso. Um, gotten those guys-- that is an amazing bike. That's, uh, probably the leading carbon fat bike in the industry right now.
• 34:24
Um, you know, Tumbleweed, you guys have probably seen, uh, what Daniel has created there with a fat bike that can take a couple trips around the globe and, you know, get up wanting more.
• 34:33
Um, and then with my own companies, uh, with Advocate Cycles, you know, obviously a new business approach that hasn't been done, but is sorely needed in the cycling industry.
• 34:43
Uh, and, uh, then this new launch with Terrene Tires. We've, uh, you know, and, and building fat bike tires that are big lug, aggressive traction fat bike tires because that's actually, uh, why we ride fat bikes.
• 34:55
We want- So-... the massive traction... Tim, I got a question for you. Are there eight days- Yeah... in your week? How do you do this?
• 35:01
I mean, most of us only have seven and, you know, you got-- you must have eight or nine. How do you do it? [laughs] Um, really good cocaine. [laughs] Yeah, you can get that out there in lost wages, folks.
• 35:14
[laughs] No, no, actually, um, actually, actually how we do it, um, is what I, what I mostly do is, uh, I-- my, my skill is in, uh, the space between a concept and the first delivery of a bike, so building supply chain, putting connections together, and a lot of what I do isn't actually the work.
• 35:32
Um, a lot of what I do is connecting the right people to the right people.
• 35:36
Um, I'm actually-- uh, as an entrepreneur, I'm very interested in how, uh, the world of new startup businesses has been drastically changing in the last five years, and it's gonna continue to change with, uh, third-party service providers, um,
• 35:52
and, uh, and new ways of performing all kinds of business functions with, you know, new IT systems and all of that.
• 35:59
And so there's, there's massive networks out there of service providers that help entrepreneurs get stuff done.
• 36:05
Uh, and what I do a lot of the time is, is create those connections between the people that need them and, and, and, uh, and the people that are offering them.
• 36:14
So in the instance of let's take, you know, one of these fat bike brands that we just brought to market, um, more than doing any work, what I do is, you know, if they need an engineer, connect them with an engineer.
• 36:25
I've got Anna Schwinn always in the, in the background ready to take on any sort of engineering product and whip out another kickass product. Um, you know, we need a manufacturer.
• 36:34
I travel to Asia many times a year, know a bunch of factories over there, use several factories. And, um, more than anything, the big ticket with Asia is just knowing who not to go to, you know?
• 36:45
[laughs] Who's gonna screw you. And- Right... you know, that's, that's, that's a huge leg up. That's a huge leg up that little startup businesses don't have. Many of them- Right...
• 36:52
go over the first time and, you know, there's lots of stories of, of, uh, you know, I think other fat bike brands out there that have tried to start up and, you know, they ended up all of a sudden a year behind 'cause they accidentally picked the wrong factory, got screwed the first time, and had to start over a year later.
• 37:05
And so, um, I help navigate those waters just, uh, through my experience and get people, uh, get people on the right path on the first time. Right on. You got the knowledge.
• 37:16
Well, I just, I just thought of, uh, some questions [laughs] that could really get us into trouble. So let's, [laughs] let's veer away from those and let's, let's...
• 37:25
I'm gonna steer you towards talking about the new bike from Advocate- Yeah... that I saw today. Yeah, the, the Seldom Seen. Seldom- The Seldom- God damn. Yeah.
• 37:36
Yeah, Seldom Seen, uh, if you guys are, any of you guys are Monkey Wrench Gang fans, Seldom Seen is a, is another character from the book.
• 37:44
Uh, c- uh, companion to, uh, Heyduke, which is also our model of our mountain bike. So Seldom Seen is a bikepacking specific 27+ bike.
• 37:54
Um, what we wanna do, as, of course, as Advocate we're trying to make, uh, you know, our first and foremost, we donate 100% of our profits to cycling advocacy, but we also have smaller missions within, um, one of them being trying to reduce the cost of entry to getting people on some of these, uh, niche products and, and make affordable products that are, that are really good and not going to fail or let somebody down, as
• 38:19
affordable as we can possibly make them, right? Mm-hmm.
• 38:22
So Seldom Seen, uh, coming out in 1999 complete, is a chromoly steel 27+ bikepacking rig that includes its own bolt-on frame bag and full SLX, uh, of course with our new super gnarly, that you absolutely loved, uh, Terrene Chunk tires.
• 38:40
Chunk. Yeah. Cool. Very cool, and every braze on that you ever thought of, uh- Yeah, actually-... for a bike pack... uh, you can, you can bolt so much stuff to it.
• 38:49
There was a media guy in the, in the booth today and we were talking about it, so we just decided to count. It's got 29 places to bolt shit to the frame. [laughs] Love it, man. Yeah. And, and I'm not exaggerating.
• 39:01
That is, that is literal. Uh, the tubing that you use is also, like, a special butted tube set, right? Oh, yeah. Yeah. So going into the science of what we engineered, um,
• 39:14
typical frames are, you know, double-butted chromoly steel, is the common catchphrase we hear.
• 39:19
And, uh, people don't always understand what it means, but all it means is a double-butted, uh, chromoly steel means that the ends of the tube are thicker, right? So there's two butt zones.
• 39:29
Um, essentially the thicker outer ends and the thinner sec- center. Um- He says, he said, "Butts"... what we did, what we... And, and then you go to,
• 39:39
you know, all kinds of technological advances, but the crazy thing we did on the Seldom Seen was what's called eccentric quadruple butting. What that is, is the, the down tube actually has four different butt zones,
• 39:51
and the forward one is actually eccentric, meaning that it's, uh, thicker on the bottom of the tube than on the top of the tube. Oh, cool. Um, which can basically be explained as an integrated gusset.
• 40:02
Um, so we were able to- Oh, wow...
• 40:04
make, make all that instead of welding on a gusset and creating another heat-affected area, everything's integrated into the drawn, um, seamless tube, which, uh, both increases the strength of the frame and reduces the weight.
• 40:18
And in the case of the Seldom Seen being a, you know, big bikepacking rig designed to take a load, uh, it's a r- it's a steel frame that weighs relatively similar to our Heyduke, but is drastically stronger and stiffer to, uh, take the increased load of, uh, going out in the woods with all your gear.
• 40:35
Cool. And, uh, you had, uh, sponsored Lael Wilcox's, was it the Ride Across America, the Race Across America? Was that the,
• 40:45
the project that you- Uh, no, actually, well, well, with, with Lael, I mean, Lael is actually, because she's such an excellent racer, Lael races for Specialized on their bikes. Mm-hmm.
• 40:54
Um, because they, they definitely kick in, uh, a real good sponsorship for her, which allows her to not have to, uh, work a real job and go keep doing kick-ass races and kick-ass things.
• 41:04
Um, we back Lael, uh, as a touring, as a tourer, so, um, when she's not racing, she's riding the Advocate Heyduke.
• 41:11
Um, and they, her and her partner, Nicholas, uh, Carman, they are putting on the Baja Divide, so a Divide race, bikepacking race down Baja that starts in January this year. Oh, cool.
• 41:24
Um, and so they w- they did, went out and did all of their planning aboard, uh, the, with her aboard the Advocate Heyduke. And then, um- Sweet...
• 41:32
as Advocate and Terrene Tires, uh, we're sponsoring the Baja Divide and, uh, helping them with the funding they need, uh, to put the race on, 'cause it seems like after they put it out, we have an enormous amount of people interested.
• 41:44
Seems like we're gonna have a lot of people show up to do this thing. Um, so we, uh, we just doubled down on that.
• 41:49
We decided to make a scholarship, um, where we are gonna provide a cash stipend and an Advocate Heyduke, uh, for one person that, uh, basically we think we can help get down the Divide where they might have not otherwise had the chance.
• 42:03
Killer. That's awesome. Yeah, yeah. Right on, Tim. Just like, uh, like we've been talking about, you just, you're all over the face of fat biking now.
• 42:15
Hey, that's, uh, I just wanna make this, uh, make this world a little bit better, so. Right on. Every time a, a new, every time a new awesome opportunity comes up, uh, I have a hard time saying no, so I say yes.
• 42:25
[laughs] And, uh- [laughs]... and, and then, uh, good things just seem to happen from there. This is a good thing. Hey, speaking of good things- Yeah...
• 42:33
how about we take a quick break here, and, uh, we'll be back in just a little bit. We got a couple other things to go through, and, uh, blabbity, blabbity, blah. Right on, Tim.
• 42:42
Thanks for all you've talked about today All right, sounds good It was awesome. Yeah. Thank you, guys. All right, bye. All right, have a good one. All right, we'll see you. Bye.

• 44:49
In this week's special segment [cheering] we are going to discuss the 10 most important things we carry in our frame bags. Yeah. That's, that's something that probably changes for people, but I- Yeah...
• 45:02
I, it gave me pause to look and see what might be in my bag. And speaking of bags, uh, we've got Tupper Becker from up there in Alaska who makes said frame bags.
• 45:13
So I thought, "Well, who better to tell us either, one, what he carries in his own bag or even maybe more importantly, what, you know, what people that are doing these amazing races might have in their bags, and how he could possibly customize it to, for specific uses."
• 45:28
So welcome to the program, Mr. Tupper Becker. Oh, thanks for having me on, gentlemen. So what do you think about what goes into a frame bag?
• 45:38
Do you have like a, a, a standard pack for, or do you ta- tailor it to the, the exact ride? Yeah. I've...
• 45:46
Man, so in Alaska, the most common thing that I get requested is some way to carry firearms, like usually- [laughs]... you know, some kind of handgun and they want it- Ah, makes perfect sense...
• 45:58
they want it carried to where it doesn't bang up the frame or it doesn't bang up the pistol.
• 46:02
But that's like, I guess you could say that's strange, but not for up here, 'cause everyone goes out in the woods with guns up here. But, uh, I see, I had someone request like a, a secret hidden zippered pocket.
• 46:14
Like, that was kind of off the wall. But, uh, like nothing, nothing really out of the ordinary, like even the strange things, I think.
• 46:22
But, um, I think my list is pretty boring, probably pretty typical for like, you know, what we do up here, like what anyone would pack on a ride.
• 46:30
And, um, you know, we obviously do like a bike multi-tool, your tube, your pump, and then I've got a couple of master links and valve cores. And these are all just for like, you know, a day trip, like 10 to 30 mile.
• 46:42
And then, you know, I, depending on what type of season or what season we're in, I may bring like an extra thermal and/or shell, um, just for like worst case scenario. Um, toilet paper or baby wipes.
• 46:56
Ooh, that's a good one. My spoon. Yeah. And then, uh- Out, out in the wilderness. Yeah, we're more city, we're more city oriented for a lot of our rides. So that's something I gotta remember though- Yeah...
• 47:04
'cause you never know. Oh, it's f- it's so friendly when somebody has those handy wipes- [laughs]... around. I'm like, "That's a brilliant idea." Oh, man, they're pretty gold.
• 47:11
And I don't know why I didn't think of that earlier. [laughs] When you're pooping in the woods, you wanna, you wanna, you wanna like, you know, you wanna, you wanna treat yourself, you know? For sure.
• 47:22
[laughs] Little lanolin on there. Nice. But I, I have a collapsible bowl and cup too. That's like the last thing. A collapsible bowl? Yeah. And, or a cup. Like, but tho- that's for like day trips.
• 47:33
Like, my overnight kind of stuff is, it's, it's all similar stuff to that and then like in addition, like maybe a snow collection bag if it's wintertime, a stove, extra socks, and then like a reflective heat blanket.
• 47:47
But that's just stuff in my frame bag, you know.
• 47:49
Like other, other bags, I carry other things like, you know, additional gear, but just in frame bag, it's, that's about all I can pack in there and that's, it's pretty loaded at that point. Right. Yeah. Yeah.
• 47:59
Well, it's, I mean, you're, you know, obviously the firearm, I, I don't know, maybe some, some people would carry one down here in the lower 48, but I, I wouldn't think as many as up there.
• 48:07
That's something I didn't even consider. So, you know, a little bit condition- Yeah... specific for sure, but obviously, you know, when you're urban riding versus, uh, real Alaska, it's, it's a little different story.
• 48:19
[laughs] Well, yeah. And I think it, it's mainly just the moose thing, you know.
• 48:23
Like when you have like a 1,200 pound moose on the trail, you know, it, and it doesn't wanna move and you can't, you know, either get back to your car or get to your cabin out in the woods, it's either fire a few shots to like scare it off if it's not gonna move or, you know, if you get attacked or whatever.
• 48:38
You know, probably 9 times out of 10 they never even have to pull it out, which is, which is great 'cause you don't wanna have to do that. Oh yeah, for sure. Absolutely
• 48:46
Right on, man We have, we have gnomes here, and if you just clap your hands- Gnomes? Just clap your hands... we have gnomes. And they come out and do some gnome ninja kung fu and, like, scare the moose away? [laughs] No.
• 48:59
As opposed to moose- [laughs]... we have gnomes. Oh, as opposed to moose. Ah, the gnome- Also, those are like helpers. Like, they would help you- Gnome hunters We don't need firearms.
• 49:07
[laughs] All we need is, like, a titanium toothpick. Nice. And you poke them in the head with that, and then they run away. That's all it takes. [laughs] It's called gnome, it's called gnome piking. Mm. Yeah.
• 49:23
So is that- [clears throat] So is that one of the- So what do you carry in your bag, Gomez? Yeah. One of the items? I carry a pump. I carry a patch kit. I carry a multi-tool, two tire levers, a pocketknife, uh,
• 49:42
a inner tube inside of a beer koozie, a assortment of zip ties, a space blanket, a reflect blanket, I think that's what you're talking about. But they're from space, man. [laughs] Space.
• 50:00
[laughs] The outer frontier. And, uh, several Ziploc baggies just in case I get caught in a downpour, I can throw my electronics in there. Um,
• 50:13
but now with your, with your sweet frame bag, I, I would trust my electronics in there. But in a true downpour, a dirge, maybe I would put them inside the, the Ziploc bags as well.
• 50:27
You can't go wrong with double protection. I think that, yeah. It's peace of mind. You gotta double bag that. For sure. Double bag that sucker too. You can't- Yeah... can't have enough protection sometimes.
• 50:36
Water's insidious. And in the winter, yeah, in the wintertime, I would freaking always have a puffy jacket with a hood, extra gloves, extra socks, um, extra hats, 'cause that's how I like...
• 50:51
That's how I judge my, how long a ride is, is how many hats I sweat through. [laughs] As opposed to miles. Right, right. That's how I... Right. Two, two or three-hat ride, that's pretty good too. Yeah.
• 51:03
True, that's a long one. That's a long one, yeah. [laughs] So yeah, that's, that's, that's what I carry. So we've kind of, we've kind of- Nice...
• 51:11
talked about, you know, Tupper up in Alaska where, where the, obviously, the conditions are different, and more often than not, you're out in the wilderness.
• 51:18
Gomez, I think, straddles the line between being out in, you know, where there's not a lot of, uh, uh, services and whatnot, and also urban riding. But for a true urban rider, we've got JK in the studio.
• 51:29
[laughs] So, you know, when a guy basically uses his bike for transportation, rides around town, goes on a lot of organized, uh, uh, local rides that are really a lot of fun, what, what do you put in your frame bag, JK?
• 51:41
Uh, normal- well, the primary is, is my lock. I got one of those- Right... Kryptonite, like, chain-ish locks that are ridiculously heavy- Yeah... and cumbersome and back- Weigh more than your bike. Yeah.
• 51:54
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, and, and in our, I mean, in our area, needed. 100%. And, and you just... Yeah, yeah. And you just, like, drop it in the middle, and it's like, "Okay, body, you compensate after two rides.
• 52:02
Now you know." [imitates bike noise] Right? You know. So there's that. I mean, and I have a, one of those, like, little pencil bags made out of, uh, used, uh, tubes. Uh-huh.
• 52:13
And, you know, it fits a lot of crap, which that also fits into the bag. Right. So you- So I can put all, like, my, you know, charging crap and my tools and, you know- Sure... just the, the whatevers.
• 52:23
So that's only one item, though. Even though there's multiple items inside- Yeah... it's only one of the 10. I kinda want this round to... [laughs] I think. Exactly. Uh, flask. There's gotta be a flask.
• 52:32
There's- So the liquid in the flask doesn't count. That's maybe two things. [clears throat] Yeah. But it only counts as the flask. There has to be a flask filled with something.
• 52:39
Uh, normally, I have a pump that's strapped up in there. Um, but apart from that, I normally roll with a backpack, like, constantly just to keep me upright.
• 52:48
[laughs] Otherwise, I'm slouching and, like, have to have the counterbalance for some reason. It's, like, pulling your shoulders back for you? Yeah. Oh, okay. Kinda like that, but... And you never know.
• 52:57
You, "Hey, you're the guy that has the space to carry a 12-pack," and, you know. [laughs] Or an 18-pack or whatever. That kinda thing. Yeah.
• 53:05
So- But if I have to transfer all that down, it, it, it totally can roll that way. Well, I've seen you do a lot of stuff like hanging a Boombotix off the side of the bag and- Yeah... you know.
• 53:14
You've got a bunch of stuff in there that maybe might be glassware sometimes. Yeah. You never know. Un- yeah, unknowingly. [laughs] Oops. Hey, out here in the local news, a calf with two faces was born today.
• 53:29
[laughs] Um, do you have, do you have line... Do you have a little alien? You're not at the local news. Do you have footage? 13 Action News, cow born with two faces. Yeah. [laughs] You're not at the Little A-Lin.
• 53:42
That's awesome. It happened in Balls out here. [laughs] Well, that's New Mexico. Oh, Little Aliens in, uh, New Mexico. Yeah. Yep, for sure. Oh. I was close. I was feeling it. I was feeling it. All right, guys.
• 53:53
Well, we're getting towards the end of the show here. Uh, any, any final words, Tup? Um, I keep all of Tim's cocaine in my frame bag. There you go. Item number 11. [laughs] All right. And then that,
• 54:08
that, that 40 below bag, then- The most important one... that would be, that would be, like, one giant line. Yeah. Well, why don't you- I drink your milkshake. Yeah, or Grandmaster Flash. [laughs] I drink it up.
• 54:22
I hit it. Drainage, Daniel. [laughs] Uh, all right. Thanks, Tupper. Thanks, fellas. Appreciate your input, and, uh, we'll talk to you again, I'm sure. Yep. All right. Take care, gentlemen. Have a good night. Bye, Tup.
• 54:34
Are you... Okay, next week, you're gonna, you're gonna sponsor the Fatty Farm Field Report. Yay. Okay, I'm gonna send you an email and stuff. Yay. Sponsor. Excellent. Thanks, Tup. Yay. All right. Thanks, gentlemen.
• 54:46
Talk to you later. Bye. All right, see you later. He thinks we're gentlemen. [laughs]All right. What do you think? Any, any final closing thought? Uh,
• 54:59
yeah, mm, I, I just wanna say, like, I, of all the bikes that I rode
• 55:06
at the outdoor demo, I think my favorite, it was the first bike I rode though, 'cause, eh, and it was close to the, really close to the Krampus, but I think it's that Advocate Heyduke, man. It just felt right.
• 55:18
I just think that B+ wheel size for a mountain bike for me is, like, just right [laughs].
• 55:27
Yeah, especially for, like, what, I think for what the conditions are like at Bootleg Canyon, I'd agree with you that a, a good burly 27+ tire, especially since that's a gravity place pretty much, you know, you can- Mm-hmm...
• 55:38
you can grind up the hill, but they'll also drive you to the top, so, you know, you can get a few runs in and you're gonna want a tire that's got some, uh, you know, capability to take, like, sharp-edged rocks and still can blast through, um, pulverized, like, s- almost sand, you know, conditions at the bottom of all the, the whoops and whatnot.
• 55:59
And, uh, I guess if I had one other thing that I'd like to mention is that, uh, I saw a pretty cool B+ rim at Head, at the Head booth today, about 40 millimeters wide in the, uh, B+ size, and they also have the
• 56:16
27.5 by 80 millimeter fat bike size for bikes like the Trek and the Rocky Mountain that- Oh, yeah, yeah... is featuring that size. So, um, so you can get your
• 56:31
lightest and bestest in market carbon hoops, single wall hoops, uh, in that size now for the fat bike and for the B+ size.
• 56:42
And Andy said, "Man, I should just send to Sven that Appleman carbon 24 inch, 24 by four fat bike down for him to test."
• 56:55
[laughs] I was like- I, I got a little bit of time on it when he was here, what, last year, but no, that's, uh... Well, no, that was the Cake. This is- Oh, that was the Cake... a completely- Oh, okay...
• 57:05
custom carbon version- Oh, that's when I saw-... which weighs, like Yeah, I saw it when we were at, uh- 21 pounds or something... when we were up at, uh, the, uh, the Fat Bike Berkey last year. That's where I saw it.
• 57:15
I took some photo of it and, uh- Yeah... just rode it around the parking lot. So- I didn't take it any further... he said, "He should just, he should just send that down here for you to ride for a month." All right then.
• 57:24
I was like, "Well, I'll check it out and see if Sven can fit it into his schedule." [laughs] That might get me back on a bike again, having something cool like that, [laughs]
• 57:34
or at least a fat bike because, uh, it's been kind of road plus for the, for the summer a little bit more. Anyway. Well, you know, and then also it's a whole new wheel size for you to- True that... experience, you know?
• 57:46
All right, Mr. Gomez. We have come to the end of the show. This is, uh, from Las Vegas, Nevada. I'll let you guys close the show. Thank you very much. And, uh,
• 57:58
we'll, uh, we'll talk more about this, the shrinkage- [laughs]... the bike market, and how fat bikes aren't cool anymore next week. Yeah, there's gonna be, there's gonna be more coming. This show ain't over yet, folks.
