- 0:00Speaker 1: Well back with Jim morro the Yukon Football Coaches Show
- 0:02Speaker 1: on Mike Chrispin or The other thing coach I wanted
- 0:05Speaker 1: to mention on offense was all the wide receiver screens
- 0:08Speaker 1: that we were seeing in the game against ball State. Obviously,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Skyler Bell made a bundle of catches, I think one
- 0:14Speaker 1: shy of his career high in a game. There was
- 0:17Speaker 1: a lot of that. Does that go into the idea
- 0:20Speaker 1: of like maybe spreading out the defense as well and
- 0:23Speaker 1: opening up some opportunities for Skyler Bell to run after catch?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. You know, it's kind of like I
- 0:31Speaker 2: said in the last segment, when you can spread a
- 0:34Speaker 2: team vertically and horizontally, it's going to be to your
- 0:37Speaker 2: advantage as an offensive team, making them cover as much
- 0:40Speaker 2: space as they can. And then we've got some guys
- 0:44Speaker 2: out there that are willing to block, you know, out
- 0:46Speaker 2: on the perimeter, which is not something you see out
- 0:49Speaker 2: of every team in football. And it's a selflessness that
- 0:53Speaker 2: I really appreciate. And then we've got some guys that
- 0:55Speaker 2: can make people miss and get yards out there. So
- 0:57Speaker 2: and then another thing, Mike, is some of that stuffs
- 1:00Speaker 2: an RPO game, you know, a run pass option game.
- 1:03Speaker 2: You know, if there's a certain look, you're going to
- 1:05Speaker 2: give the ball, and if there's a different look, you're
- 1:06Speaker 2: going to throw it out there and just try to
- 1:08Speaker 2: get five or six, seven, eight yards. So it's a
- 1:11Speaker 2: big part of our offense and it's really become something
- 1:14Speaker 2: that you see a lot in college football. You know,
- 1:17Speaker 2: that ability to kind of spread the field, run the
- 1:19Speaker 2: ball one way if it's there, and if not, pull
- 1:22Speaker 2: it and throw it the other way to you know,
- 1:24Speaker 2: to space where you have numbers.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Defensively, Now, you mentioned it after the game, you weren't
- 1:29Speaker 1: happy with the two minute defense. Late in the game.
- 1:32Speaker 1: They drove it down and we're able to score and
- 1:34Speaker 1: we'll talk about that touchdown in a second, but that
- 1:38Speaker 1: you get kind of caught in between. I'm thinking as
- 1:41Speaker 1: a defensive unit, knowing you've got a two touchdown lead,
- 1:44Speaker 1: there's very little time for the opposition to put anything
- 1:47Speaker 1: together to come back and steal the game from you.
- 1:50Speaker 1: But you're kind of caught in between. How do we
- 1:52Speaker 1: play that, Do we play prevent, do we play aggressive?
- 1:55Speaker 1: What do we do? And boll State took advantage and
- 1:58Speaker 1: they drove it down the field and put point on
- 2:00Speaker 1: the board late in that game. I know you weren't
- 2:01Speaker 1: pleased with that.
- 2:03Speaker 2: No, it wasn't And we don't have a prevent defense.
- 2:07Speaker 2: It's like that word to me, it's always been a
- 2:09Speaker 2: really bothersome word to me as a defensive coach, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: is like prevent defense. The only the only prevent defense
- 2:16Speaker 2: you have is like when they're going to throw that
- 2:17Speaker 2: hail Mary and you're back, then you're trying to knock
- 2:20Speaker 2: it down. Otherwise you're just playing your defense. And I
- 2:22Speaker 2: think the important thing is that when you get in
- 2:26Speaker 2: situations like that is that nobody freelances. You know that
- 2:29Speaker 2: the call comes in and we all commit to playing
- 2:32Speaker 2: the call to the best of our ability on that down.
- 2:35Speaker 2: And what has happened too many times is that we
- 2:38Speaker 2: have had I would call them mental breakdowns, you know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: little things that have hurt us in a big way,
- 2:46Speaker 2: and that's something that has to get fixed. It's it's
- 2:49Speaker 2: we work on it constantly. Our players understand that. I
- 2:52Speaker 2: think it's a form of confidence or it's an indicative
- 2:55Speaker 2: of confidence, maturity, trust, all of those things. And those
- 2:59Speaker 2: things grow oh through the season, especially when you're putting
- 3:01Speaker 2: together a new group, and I expect this to be
- 3:04Speaker 2: better this week. You know, one thing I know is
- 3:06Speaker 2: that our guys, I've said this a million times, they
- 3:09Speaker 2: take it very very seriously. Our players do. I don't
- 3:14Speaker 2: have to worry that it bothers them. I know it
- 3:17Speaker 2: bothers them. I don't have to worry that they're not
- 3:19Speaker 2: going to own it. I know they're going to own it.
- 3:21Speaker 2: And that's all well and good. And now we have
- 3:23Speaker 2: to make sure that we get it corrected. We're very
- 3:26Speaker 2: very close, but close doesn't really matter. You got to
- 3:30Speaker 2: get it done.
- 3:31Speaker 1: That's an horseshoes, by the way, closer.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I was trying to figure out what that was.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I remember the old cliche saying, but I don't know.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You've got a few of them that you bring out.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I like it. We're going to talk to Ben Smiley
- 3:42Speaker 1: a little bit. He actually mentioned that same thing that
- 3:45Speaker 1: you just talked about. All these new people on defense
- 3:48Speaker 1: nine new starters, it takes a while and to develop.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I'm going to use that word chemistry. It's probably overused,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but what has to happen with a new group of
- 3:59Speaker 1: people playing together on the defensive side to the point
- 4:03Speaker 1: where they go, okay, I know exactly what he's doing
- 4:05Speaker 1: what this man to my left's doing. They're more in sync.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It's been four games. The last two have been up
- 4:12Speaker 1: and down defensively, So I'm just curious what you think
- 4:15Speaker 1: about that. I mean, is there a coming together on
- 4:17Speaker 1: defense that we're going to see here as we go forward.
- 4:20Speaker 1: We're only four games in. There's eight games to play yet.
- 4:23Speaker 2: I hope so, and I believe so. I think that
- 4:26Speaker 2: the last thing I ever want to do is make excuses.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I will say that it is about, you know, consistently
- 4:31Speaker 2: having the same guys on the field doing things over
- 4:34Speaker 2: and over so that they developed that bond and that trust.
- 4:36Speaker 2: And you know, we've had some injuries at times in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the games or you know, so far early in the
- 4:41Speaker 2: season that have kind of hurt our ability to keep
- 4:43Speaker 2: everyone out there at the same time. But that, like
- 4:46Speaker 2: I said, you know, that's an excuse. But I believe
- 4:48Speaker 2: that the more you see our guys play together, the
- 4:51Speaker 2: better you'll see them play. It's desperately important for them
- 4:56Speaker 2: to them that they play well, and that is step
- 4:59Speaker 2: number one. If you you have a group that cares
- 5:01Speaker 2: and is willing to put into the work, you've always
- 5:02Speaker 2: got a chance. If you've got a group that is
- 5:05Speaker 2: indifferent and it's looking for excuses and ways out, and
- 5:08Speaker 2: then you don't have a chance. And we have guys
- 5:10Speaker 2: that care and want to put in the work. But
- 5:13Speaker 2: it's got to happen, you know. It's like, it's got
- 5:15Speaker 2: to happen. We got we can't just keep waiting on it.
- 5:18Speaker 2: It's like there's got to be an urgency to make
- 5:20Speaker 2: it happen like now.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And meanwhile, I mean, the pressure on quarterbacks that you're
- 5:25Speaker 1: facing has been good. You've been getting tackles behind the
- 5:28Speaker 1: line of scrimmage, you've been getting sacks. It's kind of
- 5:31Speaker 1: a I don't want to use the word feast or
- 5:33Speaker 1: famine because that's not really correct. But sometimes you look
- 5:36Speaker 1: at it and go, wow, we're in their backfield, we're
- 5:38Speaker 1: sacking their quarterback, we're throwing them for losses, and then
- 5:41Speaker 1: they're running something off tackle for twenty four yards. It
- 5:44Speaker 1: doesn't compute for me.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Well, I'm gonna give you an interesting one, but I
- 5:48Speaker 2: don't think Matt Brock will really be happy with me
- 5:50Speaker 2: giving this stat out. And you know, we're not necessarily
- 5:53Speaker 2: big stat guys, but there are some stats that matter.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Because you just stated that I'm gonna tell you this,
- 5:58Speaker 2: So in the last three games, we define an explosive
- 6:03Speaker 2: play offensively or defensively as a twelve play or twelve
- 6:06Speaker 2: yard run or sixteen play pass. I'm not going to
- 6:08Speaker 2: give you the exact numbers, but I'll tell you that
- 6:11Speaker 2: almost half the yards that we've given up on defense
- 6:15Speaker 2: this year have come on thirty one plays versus two
- 6:19Speaker 2: hundred and fifty fifty five other plays given up very few.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Wow.
- 6:25Speaker 2: It's kind of what you say, a little bit of
- 6:26Speaker 2: feast or famine, and we need more feast famine. And
- 6:32Speaker 2: I think as our guys become more confident in each
- 6:37Speaker 2: other and trusting in each other, which they are, that
- 6:39Speaker 2: you'll see us be much better in that area.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I just go back to those first
- 6:43Speaker 1: fifty five minutes against Syracuse where you basically put them
- 6:47Speaker 1: on their heels the entire time and just couldn't finish
- 6:50Speaker 1: the job. But anyway, it was.
- 6:51Speaker 2: The same thing Saturday, Mike, right. I mean, we went
- 6:53Speaker 2: fifty fifty three minutes and thirty eight seconds of giving
- 6:58Speaker 2: up ten points execuse and in the last six minutes,
- 7:03Speaker 2: you know it kind of we struggled.
- 7:05Speaker 1: So that's scared.
- 7:06Speaker 2: We're aware of it.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I gotcha. All right, back to the coach. We're
- 7:09Speaker 1: going to talk a little bit about Buffalo Bulls football
- 7:12Speaker 1: in a moment here on lear Field.
