- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Cause when I swing these buckle, nothing but trouble.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: When I'm flexing my muscles, yo, I'm hard as nails.

- 0:52SPEAKER_01: That's where the tails.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Break them all off, solid or frail.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Unlike the rest, independent.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Ever since my first breath, first detest.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Feel the right, then my words left.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: It's the new porcupine on the block with the buff chest.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Straight out the wilderness with the ruggedness.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Knock, knock, it's snuc, shawl.

- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Magic emerald, hold on, corona.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Give me the cold shoulder and my spikes go through home.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Hello and welcome to the Overclocked Podcast, the best source for OC remix news that you can listen to while driving a car.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: This is episode number two, which is also the highest number Gabe Newball can count to.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: Playing in, you heard Knuckles Unknown from MC from Sonic Adventure 2 by Jose the Bronx Regan.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: Hope things are going well for you in the Bronx, Jose.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Today we're going to be talking about December 2024, all the way from the future year of 2025! My name is Zach with an exclamation point.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: The meowing you hear in the background is Olivia.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: And I've been an OC Remix listener and fan for over 20 years.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Various OC Remix podcasts have come and gone over the years, and I miss them.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: So I decided to be the change I want to see in the world.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Just like last time, I want to check out the new remixes from the previous month and then do a segment.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: But first, we have some news.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: To commemorate the site being old enough to rent a car in the United States, we had a hangout on Discord, which is a great reminder that we have a Discord.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: And if you haven't yet, please come join us.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: You can find the link right on the main page.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: Over on the forums, we have a couple of news items.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: An Overclocked Christmas 18 is out.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: By the time you hear this, the holidays will be over, but in the Northern Hemisphere we still have plenty of winter left to go, so keep the season bright with some merry mixes.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: And for you Southern Hemisphere folks, plenty of great tunes to listen to while you party on the beach.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Mo'organ is gauging interest in a new album project celebrating Ending Credits music.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: Some of my favorite tracks are Ending Credits tracks.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: I, for one, will be holding Mo'organ personally responsible if we don't get a Milky Way Wishes remix.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: If your interest is piqued, please go express it on the forums.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: Dark Flame Wolf is still looking for tracks for their Star Fox album.
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: They've moved Project Organization over to a new Discord.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: Check out the forum thread to express your interest if you want some more bangin' Star Fox tracks.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Ooh, I hope the artwork is puppet-themed.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: I loved the Star Fox Zero trailer with Iwada and the puppets.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: Our news music for today was Liskoyuta from Chrono Cross by Aino Kesketalo.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: Fun fact, that means lizard beat in Finnish.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: We must, however, say goodbye to Dancing Wizards and move on to the new releases.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: And strap in, there were a ton of mixed posts in December, so this is gonna be a long one.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: You won't believe how many dishes you've washed by the time this episode is over.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: First up we have a translator's tale from Dragon Warrior by Exalef, Chromatic Apparatus, Point Blanket, Sable Providence, Seal for the Jackal, and T Sori.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: That's right, Dragon Warrior, because this is a cover specifically of the NES version that Satoru Iwata worked on.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: He was one of the programmers who reworked the game for English language support.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: The song opens with a traditional Chinese flute with backing instrumentals, eventually shifting over to more of a Western orchestral style.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: And then the guitar comes in.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: That's right, folks, we have here a bona fide prog metal slash orchestral medley, and it rocks.
- 11:01SPEAKER_03: This is a medley of several themes from the game.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: The familiar world map theme serves as the backbone of the mix.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: We shift over to the castle theme about halfway through, before returning to the overworld theme, cleverly intertwined with the battle theme.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: An incredible remix for a game and a series that is under remix.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Gimme back my cat from Lash Mush.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: Released roughly at the same time as Cave Story.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: Might be worth checking out, especially if it can inspire incredible tracks like this.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: Lash Mush gives us a synth-led metal track with a lot of Commodore 64 vibes.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: In fact, Dark Sim is quoted in the mix post comparing the track to the band Makena Supremacy.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: If you aren't familiar, they've done a couple of game soundtracks.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: What I'm most familiar with is Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams, which I'd describe as the game most reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country that you can buy on Steam.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: And yeah, this track would fit right here.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: Up next, from Chrono Cross, Lost Orphan by Azure Heaven.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: I am such a sucker for Pragi rock organ.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: Despite originally, of course, being composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, Kevin's arrangement has a much more Uamatsu quality.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: The transition from Burning Orphanage to the much slower, more acoustic section reminds me of similar transitions from Uamatsu's Dancing Madly, as well as some tracks from the Deer Hunter, like the transition from the Bittersweet 5 to the Bittersweet 6 on Act 4.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: What all the comparisons to other musicians really mean for this track, though, is that it's right in my wheelhouse.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: I absolutely adore it.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Well done, Kevin.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: And now, Sumo Swagger by Minus World Eric MG and Dakota City Rag from Ah, Hari Monada.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: Ah, Hari Manada.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know this game at all.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: As quoted in the mix post, the remix no one asked for of a song no one heard and a game no one played.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: Regardless, listen to this track.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness, I dig it.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: Minus World, Eric MG, and Dakota City Rag have knocked this one out of the park.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: I dig the combo of the heavy bass, funky rhythm guitar, and saxophone chorus.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Reminds me a little of the band Thank You Scientist.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: I don't know how the song is used in game, but the arrangement sounds like boss music to me.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: Yet another great example of the dwelling of duels to OCR Pipeline bearing fruit.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: I hope you guys are ready to skitch, because CJ the Music Dude is bringing us Infinite Starship Sausage Journey from Skitchen.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: This is a very dancy club arrangement from a game from 1994, and I really hear the 1994.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: It reminds me of nothing so much as early 90s DOS games, and PC sound hardware was finally prevalent enough that game devs could just sort of assume everyone had a sound blaster.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: I love the crunchy bass line and the 90s console sound and voice clips.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: CJ mentions in the mix post that this is technically a resubmission, a record-setting one at that.
- 27:13SPEAKER_03: He had originally submitted a mix of the source track, Belly Button Lint, Ew, in 2010, and here it is finally in all its accepted glory in 2024.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: Really great job, CJ.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: You've been dropping hints that you want to sunset your time as a mixer, and we here at the OCR Pod are begging you to keep on mixing and sketching.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Moving on now to Corridors of Time Shift from Chrono Trigger by JSA Blixer.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: One of the all-time most remixed tracks, the first mix coming in the year 2000, before I had even discovered the site.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: And incidental aside, kudos to all the work that's gone into the OCR database, which is a godsend to a data hound like myself.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: Alright, now let's start the track.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: That last track was Skitchin, and this one is Chippin'.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: I hope you guys like the Game Boy sound chip, because that's what you got.
- 34:09SPEAKER_03: A very chill take on the theme, with a couple of transitions that take it out of the familiar, mysterious sound of the original and into a more wistful, melancholy place.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: Of note, this track functions as a sneak preview for Dilux' as of now upcoming Time Shift album, an OCR anniversary album of sorts.
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: One of the rules is that contributors younger than OCR must remix tracks from games older than OCR.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: I think we can infer something about JSA Blixer's age from this, and all I have to say is, great job, Whippersnapper.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: Speaking of Whippersnappers, Team Whip submitted this track for the Game Set Mash 2 compo.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Mobius, Cyril the Wolf, Pixels and Paradoodles, and Varya bring us Gallery of Mysteries from Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: Once again, Team Whip cites a specific Prog Act as inspiration in the mix post, specifically Periphery.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: But we need to put this track in context and talk a little about game set match.
- 37:11SPEAKER_03: GSM is a team-based series of competitions conceived by Darksword.
- 37:16SPEAKER_03: The basic idea is that each team will have to write mashups of tunes from different games or series, and GSM 2 was the Metroidvania mashup.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: That is, Metroid and Castlevania.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: So while the nominal source tune of this track is Marble Gallery from Symphony of the Night, people with sharp ears, by which I mean elves, of course, will also be able to pick out Environmental Sound Silence 2 from Metroid Fusion.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: Catchy title there.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: Back to the track itself.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: Love, love, love that prog metal sound.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: This is great.
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: Incredible job, Team Whip.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: I love that super froggy section starting around a minute 30.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: So good.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: Right into my veins, guys.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: Now for something entirely different.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: Seven D D nine.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: Seven double D nine, not seven times ten d nine.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: Gives us flashback from the future.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: From flashback.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: An a media game I did not play.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: I think the kids call this Synthwave, but I call it Nostalgic Electronica.
- 41:34SPEAKER_03: Nostalgitronica.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: Okay, maybe Synthwave is easier to say.
- 41:38SPEAKER_03: This is a track from a flashback tribute album called The Holocube.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: If you like what you hear, or if you're just a fan of Flashback, check out the link in the show notes for more.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: This high-quality mix had me curious about the game.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: I know a lot of us in North America missed out on the Amiga as a games platform, which had a more enduring popularity in Europe.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: That's okay though, as my good friend the Search Engine has informed me that Flashback also got Genesis and SNES releases, as well as seemingly every other platform that exists.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: Awesome job, 7d9.
- 42:09SPEAKER_03: Atmospheric hits me right in the nostalgia despite the fact that I've never played the game.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: Who likes final battle themes?
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: I like final battle themes.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: And I think it's safe to say that Doc Jekyll does too, because they've submitted a remix from Lufia 2, The Shrine of Twisted Shadows.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: First of all, Doc Jekyll is a newcomer.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: What's up, Doc?
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: This track is a resub.
- 46:20SPEAKER_03: For the mix post, he felt like his original submission roughly two years ago wasn't up to his own standards, so here it is all polished and shiny.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: I have to admit, I'm not a big trance guy.
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: Not as in I don't like trance, but more as in, it's not a genre I've ever really sought out.
- 46:37SPEAKER_03: As a result, almost 100% of my trance exposure has in fact been through Overclocked Remix.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: So to me this mix has an incredibly nostalgic sound.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: Maybe the first trance song I ever even heard was Surnut's Lightspeed from Sonic Adventure, over 20 years ago now.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: Doc's track here definitely takes me back to a time and a place in my video game music journey, and it's a cozy one.
- 47:03SPEAKER_03: Hope to hear more from Doc in the future.
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: With jingle bells still in the air and peppermint lingering in our mochas, how about a Christmas themed Undertale remix?
- 47:12SPEAKER_03: David El Puga provides with a little bit of mercy.
- 50:05SPEAKER_03: This remix was originally made for an overclocked Christmas 2020, and thanks to the very same OCR Hangout that got this very podcast to its feet, David has also submitted this track.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: It's very chill, very cozy, and it doesn't try to be anything but what it is.
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: David mentioned he wanted to make something pretty, chill, and more hopeful and uplifting.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: Nailed it.
- 50:27SPEAKER_03: Gario calls it out as a great example of subtractive arranging.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: Brings to mind an old quote by a Frenchman whose name I won't even attempt to pronounce.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: Perfection is finally attained, not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: David has taken the source material and simmered it down to what is probably the single best hot chocolate track of the year.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: Get cozy, sip something warm, and enjoy.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Reminds me a bit of Tim Follin's phenomenal Dreamcast Echo soundtrack.
- 54:21SPEAKER_03: Really chill, but also quite upbeat.
- 54:23SPEAKER_03: It sounds like taking a picnic on a sunny day.
- 54:26SPEAKER_03: And you've left your spellcasting crystals out in the sun to recharge, as you do.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: Timaeus mentions using the Chapman Stick plugin from Spectrasonic's Trillion, and that's a perfect fit.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: The dreamy sound of the Chapman Stick really fits in perfectly with the mood here.
- 54:43SPEAKER_03: Lion Tamer mentions this track reminds him of some of Quinn Fox's tracks, and I can hear it too.
- 54:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, this is making me want to replay Pokemon Crystal.
- 54:51SPEAKER_03: I still think Gold, Silver, Crystal were the only generation to be two steps forward without taking one step back.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: This is the circle of remixes.
- 55:01SPEAKER_03: Playing the game inspires the remix, which inspires playing the game.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: Okay, we're done with chill.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: Back to Broad.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Minus World takes us to the Thunder Planes from Final Fantasy X with they say lightning never strikes two hundred times.
- 58:14SPEAKER_03: The source material is the most Hamaozu-esque Hamaozu track that Hamaozu has ever written.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: It just oozes his style.
- 58:22SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't be shocked at all if it were an extra town theme from Saga Frontier 2 that never got used.
- 58:27SPEAKER_03: And to my ear, Hamaozu's style is not really conducive to prog.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: Boy am I glad to be wrong.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: This definitely has a 2010's prog metal sound to it, which makes sense as Minus World mentions Pliny as an influence.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: Aside from the obviously excellent guitar, I quite like the piano work, which both evokes the source track and just slots nicely into that 2010's prog metal sound.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: The ticking clock sound that comes and goes throughout the piece is also a nice callback to the original.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: Just excellent stuff all around.
- 58:57SPEAKER_03: Incidentally, this was another Dwelling of Duels track from PS2 month, and it didn't even get first place.
- 59:03SPEAKER_03: It got sixth! That must have been a heck of a competitive month.
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: Now it's time for the only purely orchestral mix of the whole month from Newcomber Supremo Musico 400.
- 59:15SPEAKER_03: It's a Dragonborn Symphony from the Elder Scrolls 5 to Skyrim.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: We've really upped our orchestral game over the years as a community.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_03: I love the use of choir in this piece.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: Prophetic mentions the use of choir to support the strings, and this is an excellent choice.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_03: While the timpany cymbals and a handful of horns and woodwinds are all there to support the piece, that's where they are, like the choir, supporting mostly a string-based arrangement.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_03: Harp and the bowed strings are really where most of the melodic action lie.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_03: Which makes sense! Per Supremo Musico 400, this mix takes inspiration from a classical guitar arrangement of the source material.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_03: If I had to call out one thing I don't like about this piece, it's just too short.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: It clocks in at just two minutes 21 seconds.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_03: Give us more next time, Supremo.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: Finish lines in sight, guys.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_03: Just one more new remix to go.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_03: It's the Janine Collective with Mysterious Forest Witches Strut from The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_03: Okay, we need to talk about how many colons there are in the title tag.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_03: Guys, you can't be putting colons in the title of the song when the game already has a colon in the title.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_03: It's too much colon! But I'm gonna forgive it this time, because I love this funky track.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_03: Let's get the elephant in the room out of the way.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_03: The instrumentation on this track is weird.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_03: It's sort of nostalgic.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_03: I couldn't quite put my finger on it, and then I read the mix post.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_03: Uh so yeah, believe it or not, all this funk is General MIDI.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_03: Probably the funkiest use of General MIDI I've ever heard.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: Just wow.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_03: And holding 30-second notes, Batman.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_03: Is that the Guardian Acorn theme?
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_03: It is! The word wacky appears more than once in the mix post, and that's apt, because it is.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_03: But it's also funky.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_03: Come for the funk, stay for the whack.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_03: Or come for the whack, stay for the funk.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_03: You do, Eugene, and keep sharing it with us.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_03: That was a lot of music.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_03: Time for a segment! Would you believe after 25 years and over 4,000 tracks, there are still whole games that OC Remix hasn't covered?
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, you do believe it.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_03: Because there's more than 4,000 games.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_03: Well, okay, I guess that makes sense.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_03: But there are some really, really good games that have never been covered, and I'm going to abuse my position as a podcast host to try to change that.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_03: This segment is soundtracks that need love, volume one, and today we're going to be talking about Darius Guiden.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: First of all, what is Darius Gaiden?
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: It's a horizontally scrolling arcade schmuck that took Japanese arcades by storm in 1994, and it's the third game in the Darius series.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_03: It's also the best game in the Darius series, but as yours truly loves it enough to have 1c seed the game and own the arcade board, he's willing to concede there may be some bias.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_03: And yes, it is pronounced Darius, look at the katakana.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_03: Fun fact, Darius is officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records to be the first game to feature boss warnings with its iconic Warning! A huge battleship is approaching fast! Darius Gaiden was designed to show off the then new capabilities of the Taito F3 system, and what better way than to shoot at giant robotic fish?
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_03: But enough about that! Let's talk about this incredible song.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_03: The entire game was composed by the Taito in-house band Zuntara, and this song is Visionaires Hallucinated People.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_03: It starts with this sort of off-beat, spacey clicking noise, and a creepy voice saying, eyes and head before that funky bass line kicks in.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_03: The drums then join to introduce us to the actual beat before they're joined by this jazzy dissonant piano and then breathy female vocals, and then we're into the song proper.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_03: A cool thing Darius Gaiden does is that the song actually is used for both the first and the second stage.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_03: As you get through the stage one boss and move on to stage two, the song just keeps going, with all the strings and the opera.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_03: The really proggy synth solo is usually about where stage two starts, unless you're milking Golden Ogre, the first boss, for a high score.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_03: But stage two brings us to the first boss track proper, Burst Out, and I'm gonna go to the house.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_03: Love that right-hand piano groove that keeps going regardless of where the piece goes.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_03: I'm going to end this segment with a bit of the stage three theme, EEG, which is maybe the closest Darius Gaiden ever gets to traditional schmuck music with that driving percussion.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_03: That was a heck of a long episode.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna complain though, because I'm happy to have all the tracks I can get.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_03: As always, here on the OCR pod, we are gonna end things with a random song chosen from the Russian Remix Roulette.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_03: But first, if you want to leave feedback, by the time you hear this, there should be a thread on the OC Remix forums for that.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_03: You can also find me on the OCR Discord as Zack.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_03: That's Zack with an exclamation point.
