Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / EP 69 - The Hidden Cost of Living Unseen
Transcript
- 0:00I think one of the loneliest places a person can live is not
- 0:03an isolation, but by being invisible.
- 0:09It's being surrounded by people and still feeling unknown, still
- 0:13feeling unseen, still carrying parts of yourself that nobody
- 0:17knows exists. And the difficult part is a lot
- 0:21of people learn how to live there.
- 0:23They become high functioning, They become successful,
- 0:27reliable, funny, helpful. They become the person that
- 0:31everybody depends on. But underneath all of it, they
- 0:35quietly wonder, would anybody still love me if they knew the
- 0:39real me? I think there's people listening
- 0:41right now who haven't felt truly seen in years.
- 0:44Not because nobody loves them, but because they stopped letting
- 0:48people close enough to see them. And eventually living unseen
- 0:52becomes normal. Not healthy, just normal.
- 0:56And tonight, I want to talk a little bit about the hidden cost
- 0:59of that. Welcome to Unmasked, where we
- 1:06take off the filters and get real about faith, failure, and
- 1:09finding freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:12Farnsworth, a dad, veteran, author, and a man who's learned
- 1:16that God does his best work in the middle of our mess.
- 1:20Each episode we have honest conversations with people who
- 1:23have walked through addiction, pain, or doubt, and with
- 1:27pastors, leaders, and everyday believers who are learning to
- 1:30live and lead authentically. So take a breath, pull up a
- 1:33chair, and let's get real. This is unmasked.
- 1:39I don't think many people wake up one day and decide to hide.
- 1:43I think that they adapt. Maybe honesty wasn't safe.
- 1:46Maybe emotions were dismissed, maybe vulnerability got
- 1:51punished. Maybe they opened up once and it
- 1:54didn't go well. And so they learned and kept
- 1:57things private to stay. They learned to stay composed,
- 2:01to not burden people, to not be emotional, or at least not too
- 2:04emotional, to not be needy. And eventually survival became
- 2:09personality. They became seen as the quiet
- 2:12one, the strong one, the independent one, the helper, the
- 2:17easy going 1. And externally, it works.
- 2:21People admire you, they trust you, they depend on you.
- 2:25But internally you're slowly disappearing.
- 2:28You see, there's a difference between privacy and
- 2:30invisibility. Privacy is healthy.
- 2:33Everyone needs a private space. Invisible living is different.
- 2:38Invisible living says that nobody gets access, nobody sees
- 2:44the deeper thing, nobody knows what I'm actually carrying.
- 2:48And after a while, you become skilled at it.
- 2:50You learn how to share without revealing.
- 2:53You learn how to talk openly without actually opening up.
- 2:57You learn to smile without connecting.
- 2:59You become visible externally while remaining hidden
- 3:04internally and eventually people just stop asking deeper
- 3:07questions because you seem OK. And that's the tragedy.
- 3:11The better you become hiding, the less people realize that
- 3:15you're actually lonely. I think there's probably a lot
- 3:17of men that live here because many of us learned early that
- 3:21strength meant constant self containment.
- 3:24Handle it, push through, keep moving.
- 3:28So we became dependable, reliable.
- 3:32The provider, the stabilizer, the guy who carries everything.
- 3:37And honestly, people praise us for it.
- 3:40But carrying everything alone has a cost, because eventually
- 3:45the strong one is going to get tired.
- 3:47The strong one hurts too. The strong one needs people too.
- 3:54But nobody checks on the strong one, because everybody just
- 3:57assumes that they're fine. One of the hidden costs of
- 4:01living unseen is performance, because if people don't know the
- 4:05real you, then they know the version that you present, and
- 4:08maintaining that version becomes exhausting.
- 4:11You become the funny one, the spiritual one, the leader, the
- 4:16helper, the dependable friend, and slowly you become value.
- 4:21And slowly your value becomes attached to the world, not the
- 4:26person. And then a terrifying question
- 4:28starts quietly growing underneath all of it.
- 4:31If I stop performing, who am I? And that question scares people,
- 4:36because many people haven't been loved as themselves in a very
- 4:39long time, only as what they provide.
- 4:43I think one of the saddest experiences in life is being
- 4:46known publicly while remaining unknown personally.
- 4:51People know what you do, but they don't know who you are.
- 4:54They know your role, but not your struggle.
- 4:57They know your success but not your grief.
- 5:00And eventually you start wondering if anyone would stay
- 5:03if the mask came off. That thought keeps people
- 5:06trapped because people hidden, because hidden people often fear
- 5:11exposure more than loneliness. At least loneliness is familiar,
- 5:15but being seen feels risky and so they keep the mask on.
- 5:20I think most hiding comes from fear.
- 5:22Fear of rejection, fear of burdening people, fear of
- 5:26disappointment, fear that the real story is too much and so
- 5:29people just decide to hide. Not because they're deceptive,
- 5:33but because they're protecting something.
- 5:35Usually it's pain or shame or a wound.
- 5:40And honestly, I can understand that because being seen requires
- 5:45trust, and trust feels dangerous when life taught you otherwise.
- 5:50Living unseen though has consequences.
- 5:53Real ones. Because hidden people often
- 5:56struggle with connection, not because they don't want
- 5:59relationships, but because intimacy requires visibility and
- 6:04visibility feels unsafe. And so relationships stay
- 6:07surface level. They stay safe, controlled,
- 6:12predictable, and overtime loneliness grows.
- 6:15This happens inside of marriages, inside churches,
- 6:19inside friendships. You can sit in a room full of
- 6:22people and still feel profoundly alone.
- 6:26There's a moment in Genesis after Adam and Eve sin, where
- 6:31they go and they hide and God asks, where are you now?
- 6:35Obviously God knew where Adam was.
- 6:38The question wasn't informational, it was
- 6:42relational. Be seen.
- 6:44Stop hiding. I think God still asks that
- 6:47question, not because he doesn't know where we are, but because
- 6:51hiding is something that we keep doing.
- 6:55We keep hiding behind roles, performance, humor, success,
- 7:03ministry, busyness. And underneath it all, He just
- 7:07keeps asking, where are you? Because being seen means risk.
- 7:12People may misunderstand, they may reject, judge, leave.
- 7:18And those fears are real. I've experienced them myself.
- 7:22But there's another risk too. The risk of spending your whole
- 7:25life hidden. The risk of never letting anyone
- 7:28know you. The risk of being admired but
- 7:32not known, respected but not loved.
- 7:35Deeply needed but not understood.
- 7:38And that is a heavy price. But there's a moment when things
- 7:42start to shift. I think healing often begins
- 7:45with just one safe person, one moment, one conversation, one
- 7:52place where you stop performing. Not just the whole story, but
- 7:56just with honesty. Some place that you can say I'm
- 7:59struggling, I'm not OK, I've been carrying this alone.
- 8:04Those sentences look small, but for hidden people they are
- 8:08enormous. Because honesty breaks
- 8:12invisibility. One thing that I have seen over
- 8:15and over again in recovery was what happens when people stop
- 8:20hiding, when the masks come off, when the stories come out, when
- 8:24those things happen, shame loses its oxygen and suddenly people
- 8:28begin to breathe differently. Because there's relief in being
- 8:33known, not fully fixed and not perfectly healed, just known.
- 8:38And I think a lot of people underestimate how healing that
- 8:42is. So I want to slow down here for
- 8:43just a minute, because this matters.
- 8:46You cannot be deeply loved as someone you pretend to be.
- 8:51You can be admired, respected and needed, but real connection
- 8:57requires reality. Eventually the mask that you're
- 9:00wearing has to come off because hidden people don't just hide
- 9:05ping, they hide themselves. The beautiful thing is, though,
- 9:10that God, he already sees all of it.
- 9:13God sees the part that nobody knows.
- 9:16He sees the grief, the fear, the insecurity.
- 9:21He sees the version of you underneath the performance, and
- 9:25he still chooses to stay. Think about that.
- 9:28God sees it all, and he still chooses to stay.
- 9:33And that matters because many people live afraid that being
- 9:37fully known means abandonment. But God shows us the opposite.
- 9:42God shows fully known, fully seen, still love, living unseen,
- 9:48feel safe until you realize how lonely it is.
- 9:52And maybe some of you listening aren't actually hiding from
- 9:56people anymore. Maybe you're hiding from being
- 9:59known. Those are two different things.
- 10:01And maybe today God is inviting you out of hiding.
- 10:04Not dramatically, just honestly. So as with tradition, here's
- 10:08your action step. This week, I want you to ask
- 10:10yourself this question. What part of me have I stopped
- 10:13letting people see? Not what do people know, but
- 10:16what do say not no. And then I want you to take one
- 10:18small step towards visibility this week. 1 honest sentence,
- 10:25one safe conversation because healing starts the moment that
- 10:30someone stops hiding and starts to take off the mask.
- 10:39Thanks for joining me today on Unmasked.
- 10:41If something in this episode spoke to you, don't let it stop
- 10:43with you. Share it with the one person
- 10:45that God put on your heart while you were listening.

- 10:50just a simple message from you. If you want more encouragement,
