- 0:03Speaker 1: Beyond any terror you have imagined.
- 0:08Speaker 2: A nightmare. No. Unlike anything you have witnessed. Is born.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Hi, my name is Andrew Robinson, and you are listening
- 0:23Speaker 3: to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:26Speaker 4: The unholy is unleashed. It's showtime.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:40Speaker 2: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:45Speaker 2: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:47Speaker 5: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:18Speaker 6: Five more cooling in the containment chamber. To your stations,
- 1:20Speaker 6: we have a movie meltdown.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I'm mad!
- 1:23Speaker 4: I love you, Lord, I love you, but I'm mad
- 1:25Speaker 4: at you.
- 1:25Speaker 7: I am mad at you!
- 1:35Speaker 4: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 1:38Speaker 8: And I'm Nora.
- 1:39Speaker 4: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:41Speaker 4: the Oddity Studios. So, how's it going?
- 1:45Speaker 8: It's... going it's going pretty well how.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Are you i'm fine i was thinking we could maybe
- 1:54Speaker 4: just throw out this whole episode once i started looking
- 1:56Speaker 4: at the news for the weekend this weekend they are
- 2:00Speaker 4: doing free entry and free tours at mammoth cave so
- 2:05Speaker 4: we're gonna just throw out this episode and head there
- 2:08Speaker 4: right now And you will enjoy a fun day of caving.
- 2:12Speaker 8: Is that why you made me put this headlamp on
- 2:14Speaker 8: right when I came in?
- 2:15Speaker 4: I do like that you didn't ask questions. Just like, well, okay.
- 2:19Speaker 8: I mean, I don't know.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I do like finding co-hosts that are willing to do
- 2:23Speaker 4: ridiculous things. That's what got us here every week. But yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 4: free entry. You may or may not be eaten by
- 2:30Speaker 4: subterranean mutants, but... Do you.
- 2:33Speaker 8: Pay extra for that, do you think, for a cave
- 2:35Speaker 8: creature encounter?
- 2:36Speaker 4: I think you have to. You've got to pay extra
- 2:38Speaker 4: to crawl through the mud, and you've got to pay
- 2:40Speaker 4: extra to get gnawed on. Maybe you just get a
- 2:43Speaker 4: leg eaten off or something. It's a process.
- 2:47Speaker 8: Full of surprises.
- 2:48Speaker 4: If none of you got that, you should go back
- 2:50Speaker 4: a few episodes and listen to our Descent episode, and
- 2:54Speaker 4: it'll all make sense. I'm guessing you don't want to
- 2:57Speaker 4: do that.
- 2:59Speaker 8: Absolutely not i will call the police right.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Now they'll know you're willing they'll look at the headlamp
- 3:04Speaker 4: and be like see you're totally down for this kind
- 3:07Speaker 4: of behavior.
- 3:08Speaker 8: God i should have thought about that just like.
- 3:10Speaker 4: She brought her own pickaxe what the hell all right
- 3:16Speaker 4: so i will i will kick it off with some
- 3:20Speaker 4: some geek activities and and stuff i've seen Based on,
- 3:24Speaker 4: actually I was going to see it anyway, but definitely
- 3:26Speaker 4: based on last week's discussion, I did go see Suspiria.
- 3:30Speaker 6: Oh.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Have you seen the new Suspiria?
- 3:34Speaker 8: No, but I've been wanting to and I've heard good things.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I think I'm still recovering.
- 3:41Speaker 8: Like psychologically? Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And not like in a, like, I don't know that
- 3:47Speaker 4: I'm overwhelmed because I've seen a lot of crap and
- 3:49Speaker 4: I've seen a lot of weird movies. I'm like, it doesn't, Again,
- 3:54Speaker 4: I'm not shocked by it. I am shocked that that
- 3:57Speaker 4: kind of movie is in mainstream theaters the way.
- 4:00Speaker 8: That it is.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Because there is a segment by the end. In general,
- 4:04Speaker 4: there's several segments along the way that you're just like, alright,
- 4:08Speaker 4: they're kind of going for it on this one. But yeah,
- 4:11Speaker 4: there's a big finale that I'm just like, yeah, yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 4: you don't expect this in the multiplexes. So the fact
- 4:18Speaker 4: that it got any kind of wide release is pretty impressive,
- 4:21Speaker 4: I guess. But I don't know. I don't know that
- 4:25Speaker 4: I'm having exactly the response that other people are. Like,
- 4:30Speaker 4: I don't know. I guess I won't go too far
- 4:32Speaker 4: into it. So you can go make up your own mind.
- 4:35Speaker 4: But I definitely am glad I saw it. And I
- 4:38Speaker 4: did specifically want to see it in theater because it
- 4:39Speaker 4: is a big, weird, overwhelming experience that I think probably
- 4:44Speaker 4: works better in the theater. So I still encourage everyone
- 4:47Speaker 4: to go see it.
- 4:48Speaker 6: But.
- 4:50Speaker 4: At some point, I guess we can do an entire
- 4:53Speaker 4: episode trying to figure out what the hell exactly. We
- 4:56Speaker 4: spend a lot of time on different stuff and sometimes
- 4:59Speaker 4: things I'm not even sure why. We're invested in a
- 5:02Speaker 4: lot of different weird sub-stories along the way. We're kind
- 5:06Speaker 4: of not going into ones that I'm like, I think
- 5:08Speaker 4: maybe that's more interesting? What are we doing?
- 5:11Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 5:12Speaker 4: One main one we spend a lot.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Of time on.
- 5:14Speaker 4: I'm like, is it really worth this much time? Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 4: So you watch it and decide for yourself. Other than that,
- 5:24Speaker 4: I haven't seen much that wasn't in the middle of
- 5:26Speaker 4: an episode other than Riverdale. Have I previously mentioned how
- 5:33Speaker 4: awesome Riverdale is? I was describing it to someone the
- 5:37Speaker 4: other day who didn't realize what it was, that didn't
- 5:40Speaker 4: even get the reference of the town and so didn't
- 5:44Speaker 4: realize the characters are a one-to-one, like it's an exact
- 5:48Speaker 4: version of, it's just a super cool version of Archie. So,
- 5:52Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, trying to explain it to them, like, okay,
- 5:56Speaker 4: it makes a little more sense. You should be a
- 5:59Speaker 4: little more okay with the heightened drama that's going on
- 6:03Speaker 4: at this point, because they definitely like turned up the
- 6:06Speaker 4: creepiness and the weirdness factor as they decided to transfer
- 6:10Speaker 4: this over. into a tv show but like.
- 6:12Speaker 8: I don't really remember any creepiness from the archie comic.
- 6:15Speaker 4: You're not reading the right ones i mean there is
- 6:18Speaker 4: an afterlife with archie where he is a zombie so
- 6:20Speaker 4: you've oh there are many variations on the archie line
- 6:24Speaker 4: you just have to kind of pick a specific one
- 6:26Speaker 4: but anyway yeah they definitely take a a weirder darker
- 6:31Speaker 4: turn especially as this goes on but it's also like
- 6:36Speaker 4: very unapologetically like diving into almost nighttime soap level of drama.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Like in a way that I'm like, they're aware of it.
- 6:44Speaker 4: It's not badly done. It's like totally embracing that level
- 6:49Speaker 4: of fun. And I'm like, this is just so damned enjoyable.
- 6:52Speaker 4: So yeah, I, I am totally on board for Riverdale.
- 6:56Speaker 4: So if you're out there fighting it, give it a shot.
- 7:00Speaker 4: If you're my level of dorky, you might, you might
- 7:02Speaker 4: be fine.
- 7:02Speaker 8: So have you seen anything like, Um, other than the
- 7:07Speaker 8: movie that we will discuss, I've been watching Haunting of
- 7:10Speaker 8: Hill House on Netflix.
- 7:12Speaker 4: I've heard many things, mostly good things.
- 7:15Speaker 8: I really like it so far.
- 7:17Speaker 4: It's, it's with any of them. Like that, that, that's
- 7:20Speaker 4: the thing. I can't start new series. Like I'm okay
- 7:23Speaker 4: with Riverdale cause I'm midway in and I've been there
- 7:25Speaker 4: like week after week. So it's not overwhelming. But those
- 7:29Speaker 4: Netflix ones, like I just look and I'm like, that's
- 7:31Speaker 4: like 13 hours, 20 hours of like, man, there's just
- 7:37Speaker 4: too many. I'm going to get there with Sabrina. But
- 7:41Speaker 4: there's just a lot to undertake when you get into
- 7:43Speaker 4: these series. There is. That's kind of what's put me
- 7:46Speaker 4: off a little bit. So you're saying it's good?
- 7:48Speaker 8: It's a good one. It's like haunted house, ghost stuff,
- 7:53Speaker 8: mental illness stuff, my favorite. Mental illness girl. You know,
- 7:57Speaker 8: like family drama and the story is really well written
- 8:01Speaker 8: and interesting and it's good.
- 8:03Speaker 4: All right. Anything else?
- 8:09Speaker 9: No.
- 8:13Speaker 4: No spelunking adventures. We know that. No. All right. If
- 8:20Speaker 4: that's the case, I guess we can get ready to
- 8:24Speaker 4: delve into this week's movie.
- 8:26Speaker 6: It's time for Sofa Theater. Thomas, your sister. But she's gone.
- 8:38Speaker 6: These people, they're blasphemers.
- 8:41Speaker 10: A cult.
- 8:42Speaker 11: A disease.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Bring her home.
- 8:46Speaker 12: Name?
- 8:48Speaker 6: Thomas Richardson.
- 8:51Speaker 2: A dream of a world in which each waking day
- 8:54Speaker 2: we rise equal.
- 8:57Speaker 4: This island, it's our paradise.
- 9:00Speaker 6: We have an intruder on our land.
- 9:02Speaker 4: We have to find him.
- 9:06Speaker 11: Your eyes.
- 9:12Speaker 4: They've seen things.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Who are you?
- 9:25Speaker 13: He shall be cleansed according to the edict of this land.
- 9:29Speaker 6: The promise of the divine is but an illusion.
- 9:35Speaker 12: God is pain.
- 9:37Speaker 6: God is suffering.
- 9:39Speaker 11: Beware false prophets which.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are
- 9:45Speaker 4: ravening wolves. Let us begin.
- 10:04Speaker 12: This is time to put away the bottle. I don't
- 10:12Speaker 12: remember what you said. I will take you in as
- 10:19Speaker 12: my apostle.
- 10:22Speaker 8: Cause I love us.
- 10:25Speaker 11: In our bed.
- 10:27Speaker 8: I'm whole.
- 10:38Speaker 9: I'm holding on to you.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Uh, let me, let me read out our little intro,
- 11:12Speaker 4: and then I will let you go to town.
- 11:14Speaker 8: Yes.
- 11:15Speaker 4: So, this week's Sofa Theater feature is Apostle, not The Apostle.
- 11:20Speaker 4: At first, I was, I was like, wait, the one, the,
- 11:23Speaker 4: the Robert, never mind, okay. So, no, no, this is the,
- 11:27Speaker 4: year is 2018. The 2018 Apostle, the director is Gareth Evans,
- 11:32Speaker 4: and the plot, and I'll switch it up as I
- 11:35Speaker 4: occasionally do when it's a Netflix project. instead of imdb
- 11:40Speaker 4: sometimes i'll switch to the netflix version mostly it's just
- 11:43Speaker 4: if i remember to this time i'm gonna go with
- 11:46Speaker 4: the plot according to netflix in 1905 a drifter on
- 11:50Speaker 4: a dangerous mission to rescue his kidnapped sister tangles with
- 11:54Speaker 4: a sinister religious cult on an isolated island spoiler alert
- 11:58Speaker 4: that's actually a pretty good breakdown so maybe maybe that's
- 12:01Speaker 4: why we should go with netflix because like They're professionals
- 12:04Speaker 4: putting this together, not whoever showed up at IMDb that
- 12:06Speaker 4: day and randomly typed something. So that's the basic breakdown.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Do you want to give more as we get into this?
- 12:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 8: Yeah, so I had had dinner the night before you
- 12:22Speaker 8: messaged me with some friends, and we were just talking
- 12:26Speaker 8: about movies, and I talked about how I'd seen The Descent,
- 12:28Speaker 8: and we had done the whole episode about it and
- 12:30Speaker 8: how great it was. And they were like, you need
- 12:32Speaker 8: to watch Apostle on Netflix. And I was like, tell
- 12:36Speaker 8: me about it. And they're like, it's old timey cult.
- 12:39Speaker 8: I was like, sold.
- 12:40Speaker 4: That's enough. We're done talking now.
- 12:45Speaker 8: I mean, that's how you sell a movie to me.
- 12:47Speaker 8: I love cults and I love like period horror. And
- 12:50Speaker 8: we've talked about the Vivitch a little bit.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 12:54Speaker 8: I was like, yes, on it. So then you messaged
- 12:56Speaker 8: me and were like, you want to do an episode
- 12:58Speaker 8: this weekend? And I was like, yep, this is what
- 13:00Speaker 8: we're watching.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Apostle it is. So do we want to just ease
- 13:08Speaker 4: our way into the story? Because that's the thing. It
- 13:11Speaker 4: starts off like many of these kind of stories do,
- 13:14Speaker 4: I guess. Or again, like it's also a weird mixture
- 13:19Speaker 4: going into... just right off the bat, the director, because
- 13:23Speaker 4: one of those opening shots, I'm like, okay, that was good.
- 13:27Speaker 4: And then I knew, again, there's an Evans and there's
- 13:32Speaker 4: like two different... Gareth. Gareth, okay. There's two different Gareths
- 13:36Speaker 4: out there. So I'm like, okay, I'm pretty sure this
- 13:38Speaker 4: isn't the one that's making Godzilla and So this is
- 13:42Speaker 4: the other guy, but I'm like, wait, didn't he... So
- 13:45Speaker 4: do you know much about his other main project.
- 13:48Speaker 3: I guess?
- 13:48Speaker 8: I just Googled it afterwards and people were like, oh,
- 13:51Speaker 8: the guy who did Raid and Raid 2, which I
- 13:54Speaker 8: have not seen.
- 13:55Speaker 4: I mean, I can't remember if I went back and
- 13:58Speaker 4: watched the second one. I was still so impressed with
- 14:00Speaker 4: Raid Redemption that I was just like, this guy... Well,
- 14:04Speaker 4: and the other thing that's amazing to me seeing Raid Redemption...
- 14:08Speaker 4: because it's immersed completely in Indonesia and everything going on
- 14:12Speaker 4: in that culture. So at the time, I would have
- 14:15Speaker 4: just guessed that's also where the director is from.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Welsh?
- 14:19Speaker 4: What the hell? So that was a weird little offshoot
- 14:23Speaker 4: on this. It's just like trying to figure out how
- 14:26Speaker 4: the hell this Welsh guy was knee-deep in the middle
- 14:28Speaker 4: of Indonesia making this story about a specific style of
- 14:33Speaker 4: fighting that obviously they are not based in Welsh land.
- 14:39Speaker 4: there's not a lot of kung fu in wales i suppose.
- 14:42Speaker 8: So unless you count the sheep sheep or sinister yeah
- 14:47Speaker 8: sheep are weird.
- 14:48Speaker 4: But yeah so there's like just yeah he hadn't done
- 14:53Speaker 4: a ton of other stuff like there's a few other
- 14:55Speaker 4: projects and i think one other movie before that again
- 14:57Speaker 4: tying to indonesian fighting so like that's i think what
- 15:01Speaker 4: it was is he was he's He's Welsh and he
- 15:04Speaker 4: grew up there and he got into filmmaking and then
- 15:06Speaker 4: got sent on a job to do a documentary about
- 15:09Speaker 4: this style of fighting and got super into and was
- 15:14Speaker 4: just like fascinated with, I guess, the guy that was
- 15:17Speaker 4: teaching it there. And then the culture as a whole,
- 15:20Speaker 4: I guess, and like made a movie starring that guy
- 15:23Speaker 4: and then wanted to do something bigger and started Raid.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Which then he realized, hey, I don't have the budget
- 15:30Speaker 4: to do this giant story. So scaled it down to
- 15:33Speaker 4: what is Raid Redemption, at least in this country. And
- 15:36Speaker 4: then eventually that did pretty well. And they went, oh,
- 15:38Speaker 4: here's some more money. So he then took most of
- 15:40Speaker 4: what was that original story, I think, and made Raid 2.
- 15:45Speaker 4: And then found his way here. So to me, it
- 15:46Speaker 4: was a really weird having seen Raid Redemption. I'm like,
- 15:50Speaker 4: that's not the direction I would expect this guy to go.
- 15:54Speaker 4: I guess now the Welsh part of it comes out
- 15:57Speaker 4: a little more. But just as far as, like, Raid
- 16:00Speaker 4: is so action-heavy. And it's, like, it's stylistic, but again,
- 16:05Speaker 4: in a really fast-paced way and is set up to
- 16:09Speaker 4: do nothing but, like, amazing fight scenes and stunts and
- 16:13Speaker 4: all of the stuff is kind of geared so that
- 16:15Speaker 4: all of that works. Not that there isn't some of
- 16:18Speaker 4: that in Apostle, but not what I would expect going in.
- 16:21Speaker 4: So this is, to me, a really weird choice director-wise
- 16:25Speaker 4: or maybe a choice... by him to do this project
- 16:27Speaker 4: seems weird i don't i don't know but he did
- 16:30Speaker 4: a great job like that shot of the train that
- 16:33Speaker 4: was like hogwarts yeah i was like that's really cool
- 16:37Speaker 4: and again just right off the bat super visually impressive.
- 16:41Speaker 8: And when they're on the boats like sailing through and
- 16:44Speaker 8: it's just this huge landscape and i was like damn
- 16:47Speaker 8: this is shot beautifully he's.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Got a great visual style so it's it's cool that
- 16:53Speaker 4: we we get that but yeah it's it's not what
- 16:56Speaker 4: i would have expected again i didn't i didn't fully
- 17:01Speaker 4: know that until after the fact and went wait how
- 17:03Speaker 4: did this come to be and i i'm still not
- 17:06Speaker 4: fully sure how he landed on apostle or if someone
- 17:10Speaker 4: just offered if netflix just hey come do this movie
- 17:13Speaker 4: so I feel like there.
- 17:14Speaker 8: Was a lot about this movie that was unexpected. Well,
- 17:18Speaker 8: like seeing Dan Stevens, and I just think of him
- 17:21Speaker 8: in Downton Abbey. And it starts off very Downton Abbey-ish,
- 17:24Speaker 8: kind of. Really beautifully shot, and they're in England, and
- 17:27Speaker 8: it's all gray and cloudy and old-timey. But then it
- 17:31Speaker 8: just goes off the rails, man.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the thing. These new ones that come out,
- 17:36Speaker 4: these movies that are like, hey, it's a 2018 project,
- 17:40Speaker 4: and then I'll watch it and be like, how did
- 17:42Speaker 4: this person that I don't know get to be the
- 17:44Speaker 4: lead in this movie? And then I'll be like, oh,
- 17:46Speaker 4: they're in a show that I don't watch. So once again,
- 17:48Speaker 4: going back to the fact that I don't watch that
- 17:49Speaker 4: many TV shows or series or any of this, it's
- 17:53Speaker 4: like there's so many people that I'm just like, where
- 17:56Speaker 4: the hell did this person come from? And then I'll
- 17:57Speaker 4: hit IMDb and go, oh, they have a massive resume
- 18:01Speaker 4: that's all TV shows I haven't watched, usually, or just
- 18:04Speaker 4: some occasionally one-off movies. But yeah, there's several people that
- 18:07Speaker 4: I'm like, where the hell did they, oh, they're on
- 18:10Speaker 4: some Usually it's like, what's the freaking dragon show? Forever. Oh,
- 18:15Speaker 4: Game of Thrones. It was Game of Thrones. And I
- 18:17Speaker 4: was just like, so many people would show up and
- 18:20Speaker 4: I'd be like, where the hell did they, oh, look,
- 18:23Speaker 4: they're on the biggest show in the world. I'm just
- 18:26Speaker 4: completely unaware, which is most of my life. So that's fine.
- 18:29Speaker 4: So yeah, that was the thing. Almost everyone in this,
- 18:31Speaker 4: I didn't really recognize.
- 18:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 18:34Speaker 4: I knew of, it's.
- 18:37Speaker 8: Michael Sheen.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Michael Sheen. Yeah. Michael Sheen. I think I've, heard interviews
- 18:41Speaker 4: with him i think i know him as he's kind
- 18:44Speaker 4: of a big name now isn't he on um masters
- 18:48Speaker 4: of sex or something i think wasn't he in that
- 18:50Speaker 4: i i've heard really good things about that series so
- 18:53Speaker 4: it's like i think you know he's turned up in
- 18:55Speaker 4: several of those kind of like series that i haven't
- 18:58Speaker 4: watched so i knew him by name i still don't
- 19:01Speaker 4: know that i would have like recognized him once you
- 19:04Speaker 4: get into this and he's definitely got kind of a
- 19:06Speaker 4: different look going on But yeah, so it was kind
- 19:08Speaker 4: of interesting because this is so detached from our time
- 19:11Speaker 4: in its own little isolated place that I also wasn't
- 19:14Speaker 4: being sidetracked by, look at that big celebrity the whole movie,
- 19:18Speaker 4: which is kind of an issue with the other one
- 19:21Speaker 4: I watched this weekend. Not to call out Dakota Johnson,
- 19:26Speaker 4: but somebody seemed out of place the whole time.
- 19:31Speaker 8: Well, Michael Sheen, I know him only from Like a
- 19:34Speaker 8: tiny independent movie back in like the early 2000s called
- 19:38Speaker 8: Dirty Filthy Love. And it's about this guy with OCD
- 19:42Speaker 8: who kind of is this huge germaphobe and like falls
- 19:45Speaker 8: in love with this girl. And of course, from what
- 19:47Speaker 8: I remember, you know, she's more like earthy.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 4: So Dharma and Greg the movie. Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker 8: But it was really, really, really good. And so I
- 19:55Speaker 8: still remember him from that. And when I saw he
- 19:57Speaker 8: was the main, you know, preacher man, I was like, what?
- 20:01Speaker 8: This is going to be good.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Yeah he's really good in it he's i definitely want
- 20:06Speaker 4: to get back to him but i don't know what
- 20:08Speaker 4: do we where do we begin yeah where do we
- 20:10Speaker 4: begin i guess with our i i will give them
- 20:13Speaker 4: credit like i almost like when they will like just
- 20:17Speaker 4: kind of throw us as the audience into a story
- 20:21Speaker 4: and we don't necessarily know what's going on because our
- 20:24Speaker 4: main character doesn't fully know what's going on so this
- 20:27Speaker 4: is definitely one of the like we don't even fully
- 20:29Speaker 4: understand the circumstance or the family scenario it just seems
- 20:33Speaker 4: like dad's lost his mind now but like yeah we
- 20:36Speaker 4: don't fully especially at that time we don't know where
- 20:39Speaker 4: the brother's been like he's just gone and everybody thinks
- 20:41Speaker 4: he's dead dad's lost his mind the sister's been kidnapped
- 20:45Speaker 4: like it's just a lot of weird things going on
- 20:47Speaker 4: in the one scene and then we're just on a
- 20:50Speaker 4: boat and we're starting off the story so i i
- 20:52Speaker 4: kind of like that more than when as we said
- 20:56Speaker 4: instead of spending 20 minutes of intro and intro and
- 20:59Speaker 4: really setting everything up it's just kind of throws you
- 21:02Speaker 4: into it and kind of gives you bits and pieces
- 21:04Speaker 4: and what it wants to elaborate on it will elaborate
- 21:07Speaker 4: on so i appreciate that when they can do it.
- 21:10Speaker 8: Right there were some things i wish they elaborated on
- 21:13Speaker 8: more definitely.
- 21:15Speaker 4: As we get to the end there could have been
- 21:17Speaker 4: more i'm i think i just land more on i
- 21:23Speaker 4: guess i want to know what every well the filmmaker
- 21:27Speaker 4: and everyone involved is is trying to do with it
- 21:30Speaker 4: yeah i think that's more of what i wanted to
- 21:32Speaker 4: know which again may be jumping ahead so if we
- 21:34Speaker 4: want to wait to get to that later so um
- 21:38Speaker 4: yeah i don't know what what do we think once
- 21:42Speaker 4: we get to the island it's.
- 21:45Speaker 8: This is obvious like super obvious from watching it but
- 21:49Speaker 8: it's so wicker man you know these People out on
- 21:54Speaker 8: this island.
- 21:54Speaker 4: I did think that as I watched the trailer after
- 21:57Speaker 4: you threw it out there, I was like, all right,
- 21:58Speaker 4: I'm on board. But I'm like, this looks a lot
- 22:01Speaker 4: like a little bit of Wicker Man influence going on here.
- 22:04Speaker 8: And of course, we skipped the whole part where he
- 22:06Speaker 8: finds out that it's the cult because he already knows
- 22:09Speaker 8: something weird is going on.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Something weird is going on.
- 22:11Speaker 8: On this island. And I want to know how he
- 22:13Speaker 8: got the boat ticket in the first place. Because they
- 22:18Speaker 8: mark it so they knew. So how did he connect?
- 22:24Speaker 4: That's what I was trying to decide did they send
- 22:26Speaker 4: him that little like invitation with the letter about the
- 22:31Speaker 4: sister but they marked it so they would know when
- 22:33Speaker 4: the dad was coming so that they could hit him
- 22:36Speaker 4: up for the money but he kind of realized hey
- 22:39Speaker 4: mine's got a weird mark on it nobody else has
- 22:42Speaker 4: so he swapped out and kind of sold that other
- 22:44Speaker 4: guy down the road he didn't know exactly but especially
- 22:48Speaker 4: as we went to that scene I was like was
- 22:50Speaker 4: that a little extreme like once because by the end
- 22:53Speaker 4: they realized this isn't the guy and they still offed
- 22:56Speaker 4: him I'm just like you already beat the hell out
- 22:59Speaker 4: of him like what did that really accomplish anything other
- 23:03Speaker 4: than proving you guys are evil but I was just
- 23:06Speaker 4: like there wasn't really even a reason for that other
- 23:08Speaker 4: than they seem like horrible people but oops we made
- 23:12Speaker 4: a mistake better cover our tracks like it's not like
- 23:15Speaker 4: the cops were gonna show up like you're on an
- 23:17Speaker 4: island you also run everything you could have just been
- 23:20Speaker 4: like Oh, well, get out in the field, you weird
- 23:22Speaker 4: old man.
- 23:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Sent him on his way, but had to cover up
- 23:27Speaker 4: their screw up.
- 23:29Speaker 8: And so much blood wasted.
- 23:31Speaker 9: Yeah, really?
- 23:32Speaker 4: What the hell?
- 23:33Speaker 8: You're so into collecting it in jars and you're just
- 23:37Speaker 8: pouring it all.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Over the floor of this barn. Just dumping that guy
- 23:39Speaker 4: on the floor. It's ridiculous.
- 23:41Speaker 8: Wasteful.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Damn people.
- 23:44Speaker 8: I also got a bit of like a Jim Jones
- 23:46Speaker 8: vibe from the guy when he's doing his, Michael Sheen,
- 23:50Speaker 8: I think he's Malcolm, I think. And he's kind of
- 23:53Speaker 8: like the head of the whole operation. And he's doing
- 23:57Speaker 8: that speech about how everybody's equal. And, you know, this
- 24:01Speaker 8: is a land where no one's better than another person.
- 24:04Speaker 8: And so that whole feeling of like equality and you
- 24:07Speaker 8: all come in and it doesn't matter. You know, money
- 24:09Speaker 8: doesn't matter and titles and race and things like that.
- 24:13Speaker 6: Seems like anything.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Speech like anyone trying to win people over don't we
- 24:18Speaker 4: always kind of certainly in the last 200 years everybody
- 24:22Speaker 4: comes on board with this freedom and equality and like
- 24:26Speaker 4: which is great if it actually is happening that way
- 24:29Speaker 4: yeah it rarely in any circumstance is actually happening in
- 24:33Speaker 4: them that idealistic way but yeah he's he's there's definitely Again,
- 24:39Speaker 4: almost more of a politician vibe to it than a
- 24:42Speaker 4: cult leader, which that's a fine line, I suppose. But yeah,
- 24:48Speaker 4: you do get that point thrown at you, how charismatic
- 24:52Speaker 4: he is and how easy it is that he's sort of...
- 24:55Speaker 4: That is one, as we get into it more and more,
- 24:57Speaker 4: I'm just like, what exactly led him to this? You
- 25:02Speaker 4: get a few details as you go along, but it's
- 25:04Speaker 4: like you're still kind of trying to figure out like
- 25:08Speaker 4: what specifically led them to want to break away from
- 25:11Speaker 4: everything else. Why this version of that? There's sort of
- 25:15Speaker 4: a specific reason why the one part of it, but
- 25:18Speaker 4: it's still like, cause even like midway in, I'm like,
- 25:21Speaker 4: they're still talking about, they're talking about religion in a
- 25:26Speaker 4: way very similar to normal. Like it's really to me,
- 25:30Speaker 4: very similar in a lot of ways to normal Christian religion.
- 25:34Speaker 4: So I'm like, Midway in, I'm like, what religion are we?
- 25:38Speaker 4: Are we an offshoot of something? Is this just a
- 25:40Speaker 4: weird variation? So again, it gets a very weird variation
- 25:44Speaker 4: by the end of it, but like it's still functioning
- 25:47Speaker 4: more or less like some sort of weird Catholicism. So like...
- 25:53Speaker 4: I don't know. That's the part that I was just like,
- 25:55Speaker 4: what religion were they? Were they that crazy about religion before?
- 25:59Speaker 4: Or did they totally create this when they got there?
- 26:03Speaker 4: And how do you get such devout followers if they
- 26:05Speaker 4: weren't raised that way? So they kind of skip a
- 26:08Speaker 4: lot of steps to get to that point.
- 26:10Speaker 8: And how are you recruiting followers on the mainland? Clearly
- 26:15Speaker 8: they all come in and know that the whole bloodletting
- 26:17Speaker 8: thing is expected and that's what you do. So it's like,
- 26:20Speaker 8: who's the guy over in London or wherever? The crazy
- 26:24Speaker 8: guy on the corner.
- 26:25Speaker 4: You feel like you got too much blood?
- 26:28Speaker 8: She wants your blood. Come to this island. Yeah, definitely.
- 26:32Speaker 8: I want to know how that recruiting went.
- 26:35Speaker 4: I assume pamphlets i'm hoping a little comic book yeah
- 26:41Speaker 4: that gets left in washrooms around london.
- 26:44Speaker 8: Yeah like i want to know more about the behind
- 26:48Speaker 8: the scenes recruitment that's.
- 26:49Speaker 14: Going on you're going to hell because you have too
- 26:52Speaker 14: much blood come to the island get rid of your
- 26:55Speaker 14: extra blood then i guess we get like a nice
- 26:58Speaker 14: like sales pitch infomercial sort of like Like a travel agent.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Come to the island. Enjoy the luxurious splendor as you bask. Oh, no,
- 27:09Speaker 4: you got to do a lot of work. We don't
- 27:11Speaker 4: even have crops at this point. How are you even
- 27:14Speaker 4: selling it? This place is falling apart. How do you
- 27:17Speaker 4: recruit new people?
- 27:21Speaker 8: Or how did they even... It shows a tiny bit
- 27:24Speaker 8: of a scene of them finding this old woman.
- 27:29Speaker 8: Goddess whatever but to the naked eye she would appear
- 27:32Speaker 8: to just be a random old woman on this island
- 27:35Speaker 8: and it's like how did you get to the point
- 27:36Speaker 8: where now she's imprisoned in a bunch of tree roots
- 27:39Speaker 8: and you're feeding her rabbit blood what was the process
- 27:43Speaker 8: where you decided like now we're here we gotta do.
- 27:46Speaker 4: This now and how did it like how do you
- 27:50Speaker 4: immediately like get the jump on her because our one
- 27:53Speaker 4: our one dude who kind of rises at the end
- 27:55Speaker 4: there is like He's the one who found it out,
- 27:58Speaker 4: it seemed like, and imprisoned her. I'm like, so you
- 28:01Speaker 4: immediately just, like, jumped her and tied her up? Or, like, what? Like,
- 28:04Speaker 4: how did we immediately get to the point that she
- 28:07Speaker 4: doesn't even want to be there, essentially, and you're making
- 28:10Speaker 4: use of her for a weird religion? I don't know.
- 28:13Speaker 4: It's very... It is very strange how this unfolds. I
- 28:18Speaker 4: think they wanted you to kind of, like, be there
- 28:21Speaker 4: for some sort of shock moments of, like, oh, God,
- 28:23Speaker 4: look what they're doing.
- 28:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I don't know, did somebody backtrack enough to, like, make
- 28:28Speaker 4: all those points connect? Like, backtrack to one point that
- 28:32Speaker 4: made sense? Or is it just kind of jumping ahead
- 28:35Speaker 4: to be like, well, this will look weird. That's what
- 28:37Speaker 4: we're looking for. Yeah, exactly. Like, ooh, it's creepy. Which
- 28:39Speaker 4: it does.
- 28:40Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 28:40Speaker 4: It's creepy and it looks really good when we get
- 28:42Speaker 4: to those points. But, yeah, it's like, if you think
- 28:46Speaker 4: about it too much, you might get yourself in trouble. Yeah.
- 28:50Speaker 8: In that same sort of vein, I felt like there
- 28:52Speaker 8: were so many little subplots that they started that then
- 28:55Speaker 8: we never really.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Kind of, or we start one... And we start a
- 29:02Speaker 4: couple kind of knowing how they're... Not really, but I'm like,
- 29:06Speaker 4: we almost need them to be there. We need to
- 29:09Speaker 4: care just enough about them for them to be an example.
- 29:13Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Certainly our couple... Which to me, this is a very
- 29:18Speaker 4: specific message to kids out there. Don't go getting pregnant.
- 29:23Speaker 4: I don't care if it's 1905. Figure something out. Because
- 29:27Speaker 4: many a kid has gotten knocked up and been like,
- 29:30Speaker 4: oh man, my parents are going to kill me.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Literally.
- 29:34Speaker 4: Dad ain't going to put up with that.
- 29:36Speaker 8: It was so sad.
- 29:37Speaker 4: So that was, yeah, that was one of those like,
- 29:39Speaker 4: we're so... like on board with them because they're this
- 29:42Speaker 4: like star-crossed romance kind of thing, and everyone's against us.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Of course they're going to die. So we know it's
- 29:49Speaker 4: probably not going to work out well. I don't think
- 29:51Speaker 4: I realized he was going to go down that road.
- 29:54Speaker 4: I was sure he was going to kill the guy.
- 29:56Speaker 4: I thought he might even go and immediately try to
- 29:58Speaker 4: stab the baby, but I didn't think he would just
- 30:01Speaker 4: out and out take her out first and foremost. So, yeah,
- 30:05Speaker 4: that's a little overboard.
- 30:08Speaker 8: And I feel like they kind of tried to set
- 30:11Speaker 8: up So that the teenage boy and what's Dan Stevens?
- 30:15Speaker 8: I don't remember his Thomas Richardson.
- 30:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 8: Richard Thomason. Something like that. But they set it up.
- 30:23Speaker 8: So like they kind of met and they each knew
- 30:25Speaker 8: that they had these secrets. So you're thinking like, okay,
- 30:28Speaker 8: you know, maybe they'll come together and like do something.
- 30:34Speaker 4: There's a few moments like that. Cause yeah, you would
- 30:36Speaker 4: think they would like work more together and they don't
- 30:39Speaker 4: really get a chance to.
- 30:40Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 4: But kind of that same thing when we get to the,
- 30:43Speaker 4: the assassin sent in and then we've got Thomas is like,
- 30:47Speaker 4: kind of like then taken, like he seemed like he
- 30:50Speaker 4: would have been the most likely. I mean, he just
- 30:52Speaker 4: showed up. Nobody knows him. Like they're calling him out for,
- 30:54Speaker 4: haven't seen you at the worship lately. Like, you know,
- 30:57Speaker 4: so it seems like he's the outsider. He'd be the
- 30:59Speaker 4: most likely culprit for what they're looking for. But then
- 31:03Speaker 4: when he kind of proves himself to our leader, I'm like, okay,
- 31:06Speaker 4: this is kind of cool. Like you could do something
- 31:08Speaker 4: really cool here where you like, Have him, like, he's
- 31:12Speaker 4: now in your confidence. So, like, you've got, like, a
- 31:14Speaker 4: whole side story where he brings you in as, like,
- 31:17Speaker 4: his right-hand man kind of thing. And, like, you really
- 31:20Speaker 4: are kind of brought into the inside track because you've
- 31:23Speaker 4: proven yourself. You've taken, you know, a knife for him, essentially. So...
- 31:28Speaker 4: we don't ever get that. Like, I really thought that
- 31:29Speaker 4: was going to be an interesting plot point that, like,
- 31:33Speaker 4: seems kind of missed.
- 31:35Speaker 8: And he even, like, explicitly came in and shook his
- 31:37Speaker 8: hand and was like, you took a knife from me.
- 31:40Speaker 8: You have my trust. So I was like, all right,
- 31:42Speaker 8: clearly something's going to come.
- 31:43Speaker 4: I'm going to take care of you. And I'm like,
- 31:45Speaker 4: a scene and a half later, he's already outed and
- 31:48Speaker 4: everybody knows and they're hunting him down. I'm like, well,
- 31:51Speaker 4: we missed that. Seems like a missed opportunity to me. But,
- 31:54Speaker 4: you know, they did the story they wanted to do. But,
- 31:58Speaker 4: sometimes i that's become a running theme is i coming
- 32:01Speaker 4: up with alternate movies like yeah i know sometimes people
- 32:06Speaker 4: like i i've seen people that are very into film
- 32:09Speaker 4: that are just like nope you review what's on the
- 32:11Speaker 4: screen and i'm like that's fine if if that wants
- 32:14Speaker 4: to be your approach that's that's up to you but
- 32:17Speaker 4: i like like the whole picture and like i like
- 32:20Speaker 4: we're coming at it from a very specific other end
- 32:24Speaker 4: of the spectrum here we're coming from the other side
- 32:26Speaker 4: of the screen So we're bringing something different to it,
- 32:30Speaker 4: and I kind of want to flesh that out sometimes. Yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 4: I don't know. I kind of like coming up with
- 32:35Speaker 4: things that were missed opportunities or a plot point we
- 32:38Speaker 4: could have followed a little further.
- 32:42Speaker 8: Also, the sister, I don't even know if she talked
- 32:48Speaker 8: to the entire movie other than to be like, you
- 32:50Speaker 8: rescued me. That's it. But they didn't really go into...
- 32:54Speaker 8: their relationship at all or, like, how close they are
- 32:57Speaker 8: or what happened to her before and how she got
- 33:00Speaker 8: kidnapped and brought there. Yeah, how did she get.
- 33:02Speaker 4: Duped into this thing? Well, and also, like, when your
- 33:06Speaker 4: entire story is on the shoulders of, like, this person
- 33:10Speaker 4: being so awesome that you're willing to risk your life,
- 33:14Speaker 4: essentially give your life to rescue her, to make sure
- 33:18Speaker 4: she has a life and she goes on. So, like,
- 33:20Speaker 4: if you are selling that character as somebody that important.
- 33:24Speaker 4: Person that you choose you know your actor as well
- 33:27Speaker 4: as their performance has to kind of balance that where
- 33:30Speaker 4: i'm like no offense to that lady but like she
- 33:32Speaker 4: didn't really have enough to do to be like she
- 33:34Speaker 4: was just sort of there and like i guess you
- 33:36Speaker 4: want her to get saved because that's his whole mission
- 33:39Speaker 4: in this movie but but yeah she doesn't seem to
- 33:43Speaker 4: yeah again like she doesn't pull you in in the
- 33:45Speaker 4: audience to be like oh no she's gotta get out
- 33:47Speaker 4: like yeah it's just like Well, I guess we want
- 33:50Speaker 4: her to escape. It just doesn't really, like, grab a
- 33:54Speaker 4: hold of you. It's just kind of like, yeah, yeah.
- 33:56Speaker 4: I mean, she seems like one of the good people
- 33:58Speaker 4: versus the bad, so we want her to come out okay. But, yeah.
- 34:03Speaker 8: She spent, like, 50% of the movie in a bag.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:07Speaker 4: You know, those nights when you wake up in a bag.
- 34:10Speaker 4: I mean, we've all had that. But, yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 8: And then the other girl, I'm like, you're just here
- 34:16Speaker 8: to be pretty.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Daughter.
- 34:17Speaker 8: First of all, where'd you even find lipstick on this island?
- 34:20Speaker 8: I don't believe it.
- 34:21Speaker 4: The shot, I think, when she's doing the laundry, I'm
- 34:23Speaker 4: just like, wow, you look very nice. But at the
- 34:27Speaker 4: same time, I'm just like, your hair is so perfect.
- 34:31Speaker 4: You've got makeup on and lipstick.
- 34:33Speaker 8: Her eyebrows, yeah. Who'd you get to do your eyebrows
- 34:35Speaker 8: on this Welsh island?
- 34:37Speaker 4: I'm like, this is a very, this is what, you know,
- 34:39Speaker 4: the not, I don't know that Netflix is the Hollywood version,
- 34:42Speaker 4: but the Hollywood-izing of everything where we look back and
- 34:45Speaker 4: I'm like, okay, if we had a window into the
- 34:48Speaker 4: actual people in 1905, that girl would be a train wreck.
- 34:52Speaker 8: None of those people are looking that good.
- 34:54Speaker 4: They all, you couldn't even be around all of them
- 34:57Speaker 4: because of the stench, I'm assuming. But on top of that,
- 34:59Speaker 4: they would all look to be such a mess.
- 35:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Like our little... modernized minds would explode because we're we
- 35:07Speaker 4: can't even get through a day without like issues and
- 35:10Speaker 4: selling hygiene products so i'm just like i don't i
- 35:14Speaker 4: don't think i don't know that anybody looks that pretty back.
- 35:16Speaker 8: In the day no and her yeah it was like
- 35:18Speaker 8: okay like is this a love interest thing because if
- 35:21Speaker 8: so that's kind of lame and i feel like this
- 35:23Speaker 8: movie doesn't even need that but it didn't even become
- 35:25Speaker 8: that really yeah it was just like a look at
- 35:27Speaker 8: each other with you know kind of weird gazes and
- 35:33Speaker 8: say some cryptic things sometimes and I'm.
- 35:36Speaker 4: A sap so I'll even go along with random love
- 35:39Speaker 4: interest thrown in even though in my head I know
- 35:42Speaker 4: it doesn't always need to be there but if they
- 35:44Speaker 4: do it right I'm just like it's okay it worked
- 35:46Speaker 4: but yeah we really just didn't get anything on that
- 35:50Speaker 4: it's just like and I kind of then when I
- 35:54Speaker 4: saw it wasn't really going too far into that I
- 35:56Speaker 4: thought we were going to get more into the father
- 35:58Speaker 4: daughter thing because that to me seemed like the way
- 36:00Speaker 4: more interesting relationship of like you were sort of born
- 36:05Speaker 4: into this so you didn't really have a choice when
- 36:08Speaker 4: you were young but now you're old enough to be
- 36:09Speaker 4: like hey hey hey what the hell is going on
- 36:11Speaker 4: here like you're definitely questioning things going on in this
- 36:15Speaker 4: existence of yours as well as the religion so it's
- 36:18Speaker 4: like it really would be kind of cool if then
- 36:20Speaker 4: she steps up and like no i'm not gonna go
- 36:22Speaker 4: along with this like she's going to like create a
- 36:25Speaker 4: little resistance more or less to fight against the religion
- 36:28Speaker 4: and her father essentially which we don't really get. Like
- 36:31Speaker 4: she just kind of calls him on a couple of
- 36:33Speaker 4: things and then kind of just escapes as quickly as
- 36:37Speaker 4: possible because her dad might just kill her. I don't know.
- 36:40Speaker 4: So yeah, we don't, I kind of wanted more from
- 36:44Speaker 4: her character. She's definitely the more interesting of our female
- 36:47Speaker 4: characters and we don't get much out of her either.
- 36:50Speaker 4: So yeah, I don't know what to do with that.
- 36:56Speaker 16: Always hoped that I'd be an apostle Knew that I
- 37:05Speaker 16: would make it if I tried.
- 37:11Speaker 17: Then when we're in time, we can.

- 41:44Speaker 17: What's part of your problem?
- 41:48Speaker 6: You know, you haven't seen enough movies.
- 41:51Speaker 5: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now,
- 41:55Speaker 5: on with the show.
- 42:00Speaker 3: I see myself with a suspicion Your motives on your
- 42:04Speaker 3: mission Some.
- 42:06Speaker 15: People live for the rules I live for exceptions Can't
- 42:11Speaker 15: take part in.
- 42:13Speaker 3: The deception But I know just how it feels To
- 42:17Speaker 3: want to blow the world away Just to get to
- 42:21Speaker 3: what is real It won't work cause Everybody grinds to
- 42:25Speaker 3: a halt now and then Everybody's name gets salt then
- 42:28Speaker 3: again No matter what the paper says, the normal as
- 42:31Speaker 3: they come.
- 42:32Speaker 18: Bodyguards, ball of wax, they.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Hide behind the gun. They get up and it falls
- 42:36Speaker 4: when they are so far from home.
- 42:38Speaker 19: We need that as a reason to continue to roam.
- 42:41Speaker 3: Acceleration makes people scum blazing.
- 42:43Speaker 4: Checking out the shows that are sadly unamazing.
- 42:47Speaker 19: Hostile apostle, we can follow in. Negative energy, that's just wallowing.
- 42:53Speaker 19: Some cookout malcontent, whose soul is up the ring. Victim
- 42:56Speaker 19: of lost soul, hostile apostle.
- 43:02Speaker 9: All right.
- 43:04Speaker 4: Creepy imagery is that where you would uh like to
- 43:07Speaker 4: go yeah i'm like i.
- 43:08Speaker 8: Want to get into the the culty part at least
- 43:12Speaker 8: what we do know about the.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Cult yeah yeah there's some there's definitely very creepy moments
- 43:21Speaker 4: and some again there are moments when i see like
- 43:25Speaker 4: Very few though. When I see the, the guy who
- 43:28Speaker 4: made the raid like kick in mostly like when Thomas
- 43:32Speaker 4: breaks out and like starts fighting those guys. But again,
- 43:35Speaker 4: it's over in about a second and a half, but like,
- 43:37Speaker 4: there's a second I'm like, Oh, that, that, nope. There
- 43:39Speaker 4: you go.
- 43:39Speaker 6: That was it.
- 43:40Speaker 4: But the, the spears into the other guy, the assassin guy.
- 43:45Speaker 4: I'm like, that's an awesome scene. So again, I'm like, okay,
- 43:47Speaker 4: there's the, there's the raid guy.
- 43:49Speaker 19: All right.
- 43:49Speaker 4: I see him. I see him. He's still there. So yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 4: that kind of stuff comes in. So those are just
- 43:54Speaker 4: more of the little tiny bit of action going on
- 43:58Speaker 4: kind of imagery. But creepy, there's definitely a lot of
- 44:02Speaker 4: creepy as we get. Again, like the halfway point you start.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Because it seems so normal for the first third or so.
- 44:10Speaker 4: And then it starts getting a little weird. And then
- 44:12Speaker 4: midway in, you're like, wait, what the hell was that?
- 44:15Speaker 4: There'll just be moments. You're like, okay, so.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess the floorboards is maybe the first sign.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Do you remember when he, like, he dumps the blood
- 44:28Speaker 4: from one into the other, and then, like, we get, like,
- 44:31Speaker 4: a face under the floor? Yes. That even now, I'm like,
- 44:35Speaker 4: was that? Like, I'm still trying to piece together what
- 44:37Speaker 4: that was officially, what it actually was within the context
- 44:42Speaker 4: of the story. But that was the first time you're like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 44:45Speaker 4: what the hell was that? And then we get that
- 44:48Speaker 4: a few more times, so. What's your favorites? My favorite creepiness.
- 44:54Speaker 4: Favorite creepiness.
- 44:55Speaker 8: I want to know what the story is behind the
- 44:57Speaker 8: dude with the twig mask. Twig head.
- 45:01Speaker 4: The mask man. The hooks dude.
- 45:03Speaker 8: Yeah, like their body sacrifice guy.
- 45:07Speaker 4: We get just very... Again, it's almost for us, I guess,
- 45:13Speaker 4: because there's no... there's no structure to this religion that
- 45:19Speaker 4: we can tell, but like when it snaps into, okay,
- 45:22Speaker 4: we're going to full on do some sort of ceremony.
- 45:24Speaker 4: We've got people in giant pointy hooded. We've got our
- 45:28Speaker 4: two guys in the black, you know, the black Klansman outfit.
- 45:31Speaker 4: So I'm just like, whoa, what the hell is that? Like, and,
- 45:35Speaker 4: and we don't ever really figure out who they are
- 45:37Speaker 4: or why those two guys get to wear that outfit
- 45:40Speaker 4: and nobody else does. So it's like, I think that's
- 45:43Speaker 4: almost just for us. So we know there's a weird
- 45:45Speaker 4: religious cult thing.
- 45:47Speaker 8: You didn't even found the cult until like 20 years
- 45:50Speaker 8: ago or whatever, whenever you washed up onto this island
- 45:53Speaker 8: for whatever reason. And then, yeah, now you have all
- 45:57Speaker 8: these like ancient rituals. And then also what's the deal
- 45:59Speaker 8: with the like sea cave ritual? paintings like was that
- 46:03Speaker 8: from people who lived there before or did they come
- 46:06Speaker 8: in and were like just trying to make it look
- 46:08Speaker 8: legit so they drew it like 15 years.
- 46:10Speaker 4: Ago I think it's the same people that did the
- 46:12Speaker 4: one in the descent yeah we have nothing but weird
- 46:15Speaker 4: cave paintings in most of our series we got going
- 46:18Speaker 4: here yeah but that one is like well yeah there's
- 46:21Speaker 4: a lot of stuff that like doesn't totally add up
- 46:24Speaker 4: again like only if you stop and think about it
- 46:27Speaker 4: like if you just watch it straight through it's like
- 46:29Speaker 4: alright it's fine but Yeah, the more you're like, wait,
- 46:33Speaker 4: why is that?
- 46:35Speaker 8: Or like her whole tunnel of blood. And then her
- 46:38Speaker 8: popping up in there when it's like, aren't you?
- 46:41Speaker 4: Well, again, I was trying to figure out what that is.
- 46:45Speaker 4: As I was trying to figure out, I think I
- 46:49Speaker 4: saw that was at least someone threw that out that
- 46:52Speaker 4: that's her manifesting herself.
- 46:54Speaker 8: Okay.
- 46:56Speaker 4: Sending out some sort of vision to him if she
- 46:59Speaker 4: is a goddess or whatever the hell she is.
- 47:01Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 47:02Speaker 4: Like, I guess this is one of the things she
- 47:03Speaker 4: can do. So that's why I was like, was that
- 47:06Speaker 4: actually her under the floor then? Or is she constantly
- 47:10Speaker 4: tied up underneath a tree, you know? And like everything
- 47:13Speaker 4: else we see of her is just a vision of her.
- 47:16Speaker 8: Or is she just like somehow the whole island intertwined
- 47:21Speaker 8: as her. So she can do whatever the hell she wants.
- 47:25Speaker 4: And what was the tunnel he was in? Are we
- 47:28Speaker 4: assuming that was?
- 47:30Speaker 8: And there's so much leftover blood in there.
- 47:32Speaker 4: Was that blood? I wasn't sure what he was in.
- 47:35Speaker 8: Something.
- 47:36Speaker 4: I was like, well, I assumed it was, again, I'm
- 47:39Speaker 4: going with modern day, which is like, oh, Lord, is
- 47:41Speaker 4: he in the sewer? Which is maybe more gross than
- 47:45Speaker 4: a tunnel of blood. That's true. So, yeah, I was
- 47:48Speaker 4: not 100% sure what he was wading through there, but
- 47:52Speaker 4: not good either way.
- 47:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Think of some of the other but yeah the twig
- 47:58Speaker 4: head i again like that's essentially i think he's just
- 48:02Speaker 4: like he's the executioner more or less he's there to
- 48:06Speaker 4: to kill things and then give her the blood more
- 48:08Speaker 4: than anything else but that's the other thing that like
- 48:12Speaker 4: especially you just mentioned that we're on kind of because
- 48:15Speaker 4: if we're going by the daughter like that's really our
- 48:18Speaker 4: only timetable but like she had a mother i'm assuming
- 48:21Speaker 4: all this took off when the So that puts it within, like,
- 48:28Speaker 4: what is she, like 20? So that puts it kind
- 48:30Speaker 4: of in a 20-year span. How is it that there's
- 48:33Speaker 4: all these literal mechanics to it as well? Because that
- 48:38Speaker 4: was the other thing. I was like, we have no
- 48:40Speaker 4: seeming structure other than him kind of preaching, and again,
- 48:45Speaker 4: in a very Christian kind of a religion in the beginning.
- 48:49Speaker 4: But then when it snaps over and it becomes like, okay,
- 48:54Speaker 4: once we've crossed the line and the dude decides to
- 48:58Speaker 4: pull rank and become the new leader, suddenly we have
- 49:03Speaker 4: machinery involved. That's the thing. Because up until that point,
- 49:06Speaker 4: other than slicing that one dude's throat, we hadn't seen
- 49:09Speaker 4: him kill people. We hadn't seen a whole lot of
- 49:11Speaker 4: weird cult stuff other than the bloodletting and collecting. But
- 49:15Speaker 4: you know it wasn't super crazy cult level at that
- 49:19Speaker 4: point but when it switches it like all of a
- 49:22Speaker 4: sudden now okay so you just have this table that
- 49:25Speaker 4: you vice people down to like just ready to go
- 49:29Speaker 4: like in a moment's notice they slapped it all together
- 49:32Speaker 4: got it built and it was some like weird does
- 49:35Speaker 4: everyone know that that's there? Obviously they're schooled in enough
- 49:38Speaker 4: that they put it together pretty damn quick. So does
- 49:41Speaker 4: everybody have the job that they know how to like
- 49:43Speaker 4: piece together the mechanics of this religion and like get
- 49:47Speaker 4: it ready to start sacrificing people like that? So that
- 49:51Speaker 4: I thought was kind of weird that we don't have
- 49:52Speaker 4: any version of that earlier. It just seems like it
- 49:54Speaker 4: comes out of nowhere.
- 49:55Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 49:56Speaker 4: And was it all, like, was her dad, like, trying
- 49:59Speaker 4: to keep that level at bay and was trying to
- 50:03Speaker 4: keep that at a minimum, and that's why he was failing,
- 50:06Speaker 4: because he wasn't killing people to the extent that he
- 50:08Speaker 4: needed to? Because, yeah, once the other guy's in charge,
- 50:11Speaker 4: it just, like, full-on starts sacrificing people with a drill
- 50:14Speaker 4: to the head.
- 50:15Speaker 11: So....
- 50:17Speaker 4: Which, again, that's what I was saying earlier. It's like
- 50:18Speaker 4: we almost just needed that dumb kid to like him
- 50:21Speaker 4: just enough so that somebody could get a drill to
- 50:24Speaker 4: the head.
- 50:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 50:24Speaker 4: Because we couldn't do that to our guy because we
- 50:27Speaker 4: still needed to finish our story. So it's like we
- 50:29Speaker 4: need somebody else that he gets to be friends with,
- 50:31Speaker 4: but not too much of friends because he's not going
- 50:33Speaker 4: to be around that long. So just care about him
- 50:36Speaker 4: enough that you're like, I hope he doesn't get a
- 50:37Speaker 4: drill in the head.
- 50:39Speaker 8: Poor buddy.
- 50:40Speaker 4: But yeah, so there's that one, and then there's the
- 50:43Speaker 4: mangler machine at the end there that the guy is
- 50:47Speaker 4: cranking him into. That's pretty sophisticated for 1905. I mean,
- 50:53Speaker 4: not that they hadn't been building machines for quite a while,
- 50:55Speaker 4: but still, it also seems for a very specific purpose
- 51:00Speaker 4: of mangling people. So yeah, the fact that they... seemingly
- 51:05Speaker 4: to the naked eye, they're kind of a normal bunch
- 51:08Speaker 4: of weirdos in 1905, but they have all this structure
- 51:11Speaker 4: and machinery built up for the religion that, I don't know,
- 51:17Speaker 4: it just seems like that's strange that that's not part
- 51:20Speaker 4: of what's going on in the day-to-day, but when we
- 51:23Speaker 4: need it, it's there to be creepy.
- 51:24Speaker 8: Yeah, and also like the, whatever hooks they're hanging the
- 51:28Speaker 8: people in the bags from, there's like two other bodies
- 51:31Speaker 8: already in there when they bring in the sister. So
- 51:33Speaker 8: then it's like, How many people are we sacrificing per day?
- 51:37Speaker 8: Because there's got to be 50 or maybe 100 who
- 51:41Speaker 8: live on this island. So how often are we either
- 51:45Speaker 8: taking one of our own and doing it that way
- 51:48Speaker 8: or kidnapping somebody, bringing them to said island, asking for money,
- 51:53Speaker 8: getting a family member to come out to the island?
- 51:57Speaker 8: going through this multi-day investigation of it like is this
- 52:00Speaker 8: the first time you guys have are just trying this
- 52:02Speaker 8: part out or is this a regular thing because that
- 52:04Speaker 8: seems like so much effort for not that great of
- 52:07Speaker 8: a reward.
- 52:08Speaker 4: Well as you say that i was like are there
- 52:10Speaker 4: also two other movies going on simultaneously for those other
- 52:13Speaker 4: two bags yeah exactly is there another brother over there
- 52:16Speaker 4: and this one's dad showed up and like there's two
- 52:18Speaker 4: other movies going on right now that like somebody else
- 52:21Speaker 4: gets to watch that version but we're focusing on this
- 52:24Speaker 4: thomas character And.
- 52:25Speaker 8: Then again, why are we going all willy-nilly with the
- 52:27Speaker 8: murdering and doing it wherever? Shouldn't you have a designated
- 52:31Speaker 8: ceremonial space where you can really make sure that you
- 52:33Speaker 8: funnel all that blood down into one big blood jar?
- 52:37Speaker 4: Again, they're not planning very well on this. There really
- 52:39Speaker 4: should be. If you're that concerned about blood, it really
- 52:43Speaker 4: should just be set.
- 52:44Speaker 8: Up in a chamber. And that prone to having to
- 52:46Speaker 8: murder people, yeah. Be prepared, you guys. Do some planning.
- 52:50Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. This is just, this is why your cults are failing. Exactly.
- 52:55Speaker 4: That was another one. I think I just trying to
- 52:58Speaker 4: figure out some of what's going on in this story. Like,
- 53:00Speaker 4: I think they also said maybe her dad was mostly
- 53:03Speaker 4: focusing on animals and that's why everything was kind of
- 53:06Speaker 4: falling apart. Cause he was trying not, I guess, I
- 53:10Speaker 4: don't know. Like he was focusing more on sacrificing animals,
- 53:13Speaker 4: which is why they didn't have any more animals. So
- 53:15Speaker 4: it's like now the crops are also starting to die.
- 53:19Speaker 4: So they don't really have anything anymore. I don't know.
- 53:21Speaker 4: So I don't know if that's this like focusing more
- 53:24Speaker 4: on humans is a new thing, but if so, why
- 53:26Speaker 4: do we have machinery to kill? And I guess you
- 53:29Speaker 4: could throw a sheep in the mangler. I don't know.
- 53:32Speaker 4: It's still like, yeah, it's a lot of weird pieces
- 53:36Speaker 4: kind of thrown out there. Yeah.
- 53:39Speaker 8: You need to figure some stuff out in your cult, guys.
- 53:41Speaker 4: As you're building your cult, be sure to put it
- 53:44Speaker 4: together a little tighter than this.
- 53:47Speaker 8: That's what, yeah, you got to plan if you're a
- 53:49Speaker 8: good cult leader.
- 53:51Speaker 4: I think the most effective and scariest part of the cult,
- 53:55Speaker 4: and you think about this when you get kidnapped by
- 53:57Speaker 4: a cult, man, it's going to suck when kids are
- 53:59Speaker 4: poking you with sticks.
- 54:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 54:03Speaker 4: No, it's okay. They'll braid your hair. But they're also
- 54:07Speaker 4: simultaneously going to poke you with sticks.
- 54:10Speaker 8: Which then also, who are these jerk kids going and
- 54:14Speaker 8: listening to this sermon about how we're all equal and
- 54:16Speaker 8: then being like, let's go poke the lady.
- 54:18Speaker 4: Except this girl, we get to poke with a stick.
- 54:20Speaker 8: She sucks.
- 54:21Speaker 4: We hate her. Poke, poke. Poke, poke.
- 54:26Speaker 8: Poke.
- 54:26Speaker 4: You're raising a whole new generation of jackasses.
- 54:30Speaker 8: Alec, are you trying to intentionally be evil and just
- 54:35Speaker 8: be crazy about it? Or are these kids just jerks?
- 54:40Speaker 4: Because, yeah, like the way that we're led to believe
- 54:43Speaker 4: by what little dialogue we have covering this is they
- 54:46Speaker 4: hadn't been doing this, which does make me wonder what
- 54:49Speaker 4: the hell's in those other two bags. But like this
- 54:51Speaker 4: was a desperate one off thing that he came up
- 54:53Speaker 4: with because he found out her dad had money. So
- 54:56Speaker 4: like it was just like, oh, we're doing pretty well
- 54:59Speaker 4: doing this, you know, our religion. And then it wasn't
- 55:02Speaker 4: going so well and they were starting to lose the
- 55:04Speaker 4: crops and they needed more livestock, I guess, because he
- 55:07Speaker 4: keep killing them all. So, like, this became sort of
- 55:10Speaker 4: a last-ditch effort of, okay, let's try kidnapping. You know, like,
- 55:14Speaker 4: ransom is the way to go. So, yeah, any good
- 55:17Speaker 4: religion involves kidnapping and ransom. But, yeah, so, I mean,
- 55:22Speaker 4: it seems like that isn't a normal thing for them.
- 55:25Speaker 4: So then, this is, like, a weird point that we
- 55:29Speaker 4: kind of come into this story. That he's even, like,
- 55:31Speaker 4: once we get to the guy trying to escape on
- 55:34Speaker 4: the boat, the kid that drilled, his dad... It's just
- 55:38Speaker 4: like calling out all this stuff. It's like, what is
- 55:41Speaker 4: working about this for you? How are you still hanging
- 55:44Speaker 4: on to this as your life now? It's like everything
- 55:47Speaker 4: about this place is falling apart. Get out. Time to move.
- 55:54Speaker 4: He's kind of right.
- 55:55Speaker 8: Find yourself another island. Well, then how do we want
- 55:58Speaker 8: to interpret that ending?
- 56:02Speaker 4: That, to me, gets to the bigger question. Because I
- 56:05Speaker 4: think all this other, like, it's mostly nitpicky. I can
- 56:08Speaker 4: just kind of, like, let most of that slide. The
- 56:11Speaker 4: thing that is more of an issue with me by
- 56:13Speaker 4: the end of it is, what are we trying to
- 56:15Speaker 4: say with this? Like, as a whole, I mean, it's about,
- 56:18Speaker 4: I mean, you can't even question anything else. Like, there's
- 56:22Speaker 4: no other layers to it. It's not like, let's focus
- 56:26Speaker 4: on the problems with marriage.
- 56:30Speaker 11: No, no.
- 56:31Speaker 4: We don't see much of that. Let's talk about family relationships. No,
- 56:35Speaker 4: we get a pretty messed up, broken version of that too.
- 56:38Speaker 4: So it's like, it doesn't focus on anything else. The
- 56:41Speaker 4: only through line through, through the whole thing is religion.
- 56:44Speaker 4: So it's like, okay, what are we trying to say
- 56:47Speaker 4: about religion? Cause I don't even think it lands on anything.
- 56:50Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 56:51Speaker 4: It seems like it's because it's so close to traditional
- 56:55Speaker 4: religion in the beginning, it seems like it's just sort
- 56:58Speaker 4: of damning of religion in general and But then when
- 57:00Speaker 4: it becomes a cult, it's like, yeah, this cult sucks.
- 57:03Speaker 4: But I'm like, okay, but what are you trying to say?
- 57:07Speaker 4: So just that kind of basic level of what the message,
- 57:12Speaker 4: what the direction of this is supposed to be. And
- 57:14Speaker 4: it gets even weirder when we get to the end
- 57:16Speaker 4: with him. Again, I try not to go delve too
- 57:22Speaker 4: far into what other people think, but that one I
- 57:24Speaker 4: was like, I only went one place that doesn't count
- 57:26Speaker 4: as much because it was Wikipedia. But the way Wikipedia
- 57:30Speaker 4: described it is not really where I was going. So
- 57:33Speaker 4: what's your take on the very end of basically him
- 57:36Speaker 4: bleeding in the dirt?
- 57:39Speaker 8: Yeah. I mean, well, it's again like, well, then what
- 57:43Speaker 8: was the deal with the... Because if he set her
- 57:46Speaker 8: on fire, she bursts up in flames and then it's like...
- 57:50Speaker 8: maybe I thought the whole island would just go up
- 57:52Speaker 8: in flames if she's kind of the one who controls
- 57:56Speaker 8: all of the vegetation on it and stuff, or maybe
- 57:58Speaker 8: everything dies, but it's like, Oh, she can just be
- 58:01Speaker 8: replaced by another person. Is that what they're going for?
- 58:04Speaker 8: Or like, he's just going to get, you know, he's
- 58:07Speaker 8: the last sacrifice and gets taken in and then that's that.
- 58:10Speaker 8: But like, are we going for him being the.
- 58:12Speaker 4: New, I think that's kind of plant God, but they, yeah, they,
- 58:17Speaker 4: I mean, they'd, The way they worded it was as
- 58:21Speaker 4: he becomes a living God. I was like, okay.
- 58:27Speaker 16: I don't know.
- 58:28Speaker 4: To me, it was more of just a downer bleeding
- 58:33Speaker 4: out kind of thing.
- 58:33Speaker 8: Yeah, exactly.
- 58:35Speaker 4: Then you can take it almost... Because again, before it
- 58:39Speaker 4: wasn't about.
- 58:42Speaker 4: Her bleeding like it was her ingesting other blood and
- 58:46Speaker 4: then that would make everything it was only when she
- 58:49Speaker 4: was getting blood that things would flourish yeah so like
- 58:51Speaker 4: this isn't really doing the same thing so to me
- 58:54Speaker 4: it was almost more of like a cruel like well
- 58:56Speaker 4: this is what it took to fix everything guess what
- 58:58Speaker 4: you're it's all gone now so it doesn't matter yeah
- 59:01Speaker 4: so i got way more of like a downer like
- 59:04Speaker 4: and here's our hero bleeding out in the dirt you
- 59:06Speaker 4: have fun with that this is what happened tied to
- 59:08Speaker 4: this terrible island yeah he did the one thing he
- 59:12Speaker 4: came here to do but that's pretty much the only
- 59:13Speaker 4: win you guys get because everything else has gone up
- 59:16Speaker 4: in flames and it's all falling apart so i don't
- 59:20Speaker 4: know like where where do we land on.
- 59:23Speaker 8: This well and then like yeah what does that say
- 59:25Speaker 8: about religion especially for him that he was this missionary
- 59:29Speaker 8: went through horrible torture and then wasn't religious anymore but
- 59:34Speaker 8: now if i mean depending on how you interpret it
- 59:37Speaker 8: but now he's an actual he's.
- 59:39Speaker 4: Becoming a god so it takes losing your faith well
- 59:43Speaker 4: that's what yeah i mean that's what like all of
- 59:47Speaker 4: his because i did stuff that was the only thing
- 59:49Speaker 4: like as i didn't make a ton of notes but
- 59:52Speaker 4: as i went through like some of the stuff he
- 59:53Speaker 4: was saying Was so, like, just blatantly, like, as for God,
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: he left me. Like, pain, suffering, betrayal, these are his
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: descriptions of religion. So, like, it really is, like, I
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: don't know, like, faith is pain.
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Is what we start to take from this. That, like,
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: the only way that this religion works is through other
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: people's suffering. And then in the end, that's kind of
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: proven right. Yeah, exactly. So I'm like, again, I'm like,
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: is that what we're saying about this whole story and
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: religion as a whole?
- 1:00:29Speaker 8: Yeah, like religion is horrible and now congratulations, you're forced
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: to do this.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Be the light that guides me to eternity. That was
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: the sister, I believe, because she's such a shining beacon.
- 1:00:44Speaker 8: We don't know anything about her.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: She's so amazing to be around. Oh, no. She's a
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: stick poking. That's the most action she gives. Just poked
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: with a stick. That's all we get from her. Really?
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: And she doesn't even say, like, anything.
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: Guys.
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: Yeah. So, like, generally, I did like the movie and
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: thought it was worth a watch.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: Not just for, like, the crazy visuals and the kind
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: of new-ish take on the cult thing.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. I only feel like it's different because it's,
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: it feels unfinished to me. Like I feel like if
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: it went one way or another, it would probably land
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: more on like, this is a 1905 version of Jonestown,
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: you know? Like it really would land somewhere we've seen before,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: but because it never squarely lands anywhere, like it feels
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: a little different, I guess, which maybe is what they
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: were going for. I don't know. But yeah, it's like,
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: I never really know where they're going with the points
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: again it seems very damning of religion as a whole
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: like especially like when we get his flashback of like
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: burning crosses and like him again like it's we're supposed
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: to be on his side but now like really if
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: you if you flip to the other side it's like
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: you're forcing your Christianity down this other culture's throat and
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: This is the backlash. This is them fighting against you,
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: forcing your religion on them. So I'm like, is this
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: cult any different than what you were doing? It's like,
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: it ends in violence here. It ends in violence over here.
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: How is it any better? Just because you call this
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: one a cult, what's it say about your religion that
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: you were totally on board with in the beginning? Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: I don't know. It seems like it's got a very
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: damning version of religion, but then it never fully finishes that.
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: It never seems like it lands on a take one
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: way or the other 100%. I don't know.
- 1:02:44Speaker 8: Well, yeah, like, even the goddess as a whole, like,
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: do we feel bad for her? Is she, like, an
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: inherently evil being? Because, you know, they sure make her
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: look creepy and stuff.
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: Definitely, but, like... That scene in the tunnel is disturbing. Yeah. Like,
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: I didn't... That's the one I was like, I didn't
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: see that coming.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: Like, it is like, whoa, what kind of a movie
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: did I just stumble into? It becomes a horror movie
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: for a few seconds, and then it's kind of just
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: back to a weird cult movie.
- 1:03:07Speaker 8: Yeah, and, like, she's definitely creepy, but then... have they
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: just imprisoned her in this thing and are forcing her
- 1:03:15Speaker 8: to you know sit there and drink.
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: Blood that would almost be a different take on it
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: is if she if because midway in i'm like is
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: there anything supernatural like like what if she was just
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: an old woman and like they decided she was the
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: goddess and like she's just an old woman trapped under
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: a tree and like they're still making her drink blood
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: it's like if it just happened to be a good
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: year you know it's like What if there were no
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: signs that there was anything supernatural from her? To me, again,
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: that would be more of a take of total rabid zealots.
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: Just them forcing this religion into something it really isn't.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: Because there is no supernatural element to back it up.
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: But we do get those moments where they bother to
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: show she does have some sort of powers involved. again
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: mostly just some sort of ancient language and she can
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: make like moscrow but other than that it's like we
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: don't you know she doesn't have much power because if
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: she did she should have freed herself a long time
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: ago so it is like it is it it doesn't
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: fully land on that either like i feel like it
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: would almost be more interesting if it if she wasn't
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: a goddess if she was just someone that had become
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: a pawn in this weird game that they set up
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: 20 years ago and like that That, in a way,
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: would be more interesting to take, but we don't really
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: fully get that either. But she doesn't do much. It's
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: just enough to throw out that theory. So it's very,
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: I don't know, it's very strange. And where do we
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: land on her dad as the bad guy? Because, like
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: I said earlier, it's like he was doing the least amount. Like,
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: it definitely gets way scarier when the other guy takes over.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: So I'm like, is, because he, by the end, kind
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: of isn't the villain.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: Because you're fighting with some other guys by the end
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: for him to, you know, when we get into the
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: big battles at the end there. Because it was midway
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: into that last part that I was like, wait, we
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: didn't even see the dad die, did we? So that's
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: why he finally comes wandering up at the end. I
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: was like, okay, I was right. We didn't see him
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: officially die. So I'm like, okay, so again, if he's
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: not really the villain, where is he on this spectrum?
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: He's definitely a bad guy. We watched him kind of
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: kill him and They set up this weird cult, but, like,
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: I don't even know what to do with him by
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: the end of it. He's just kind of, like, I
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: don't know. He's just a part of the problem, but
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: still not even our villain fully. So, yeah, it's all
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: hard to process.
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: I feel like there was a lot of time spent, like,
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: either setting up stories that they didn't go into or
- 1:05:57Speaker 8: just like building up really gory scenes with a lot
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: of like slow suspense, like, Oh no, he's not going
- 1:06:03Speaker 8: to do it.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Oh no.
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: And that stuff works. Like there are times when I'm like,
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: I didn't much like the old lady. I also did
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: not expect him to get the hand in the man.
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: I'm like, I assumed he was going to fight his
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: way out and throw the other dude in there, but no,
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: he lost 90% of that hand. Yeah. I'm like, that
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: sucks for you. Like, I didn't see that. So again,
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: it does do stuff that's kind of unconventional for this
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: type of movie and does it really well. Like most
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: of the, like you said, the suspense in those scenes
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: is really well put together. So it is working on
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: so many angles, but like, yeah, it's just not like 100%. Yeah.
- 1:06:42Speaker 8: I just wish that, and the actors were so good
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: that it's like, I wish they were given more kind
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: of going into that background and more things that would
- 1:06:51Speaker 8: explain their motives and why they're in whatever mood they
- 1:06:55Speaker 8: are in.
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: Um because even even thomas is like a weird hero
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: to get by like it's from the get-go like him
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: in that room is the guy's reading the letter he
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: has the look of crazy yeah that i'm just like
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: what is going on like who is that guy i'm
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: like Suddenly he's our hero, but I'm just like, he's
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: never like, other than his very pure, you know, I
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: need to save my sister. Like other than that, there's
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: so much about him. That's just kind of never really
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: ironed out as to like who he is. And like,
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: we don't, again, we don't know anything about him and
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: his sister. We don't understand the relationship between him and
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: the father. Like all of that is just kind of gone. And, like,
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: we get him, like, his actions along the way, but
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: we never really get much more about him as a person.
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: So he's hard to, like, totally get behind even as
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: a protagonist because he's just, like, he's the guy we're
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: spending the most time with. And, like, he's got, like,
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: issues with religion for good reason. Things weren't going so
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: well on that side either. But, like, again, I feel
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: like we could have learned a little more about him
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: and kind of, again, he's a great actor. So giving
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: him a little more to, like, try to you know
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: put out there like just enrich this character a little
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: bit because i think it's a good performance but it
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: could have had more you know there's just more potential
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: that you know we could have gotten out of that
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: character with a little more character development.
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: Well and like we have all these questions and there
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: was that scene with the whole you saved me now
- 1:08:27Speaker 8: i trust you thing they could have covered so much
- 1:08:30Speaker 8: of like the founding of the cult and Malcolm's reasons
- 1:08:34Speaker 8: for starting this island civilization and like that whole weird
- 1:08:40Speaker 8: friendship or some sort of bond. Like they could have
- 1:08:43Speaker 8: just had one scene with that and it would have
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: answered so many more questions.
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: It's funny. Cause I, as I went to read the
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: description there, it also gave me the time. I didn't
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: even feel like it, it, is a longer running time
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: than I feel like it is. And I think it's
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: because we don't get any of those things. Like we don't.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: go down any of those roads we don't get the
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: story really taken very far at all so it i
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: assumed as i watched it it was like 90 minutes
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: but like it's over two hours so like you think
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: because i'm like as you're saying that i'm like yeah
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: if we had like a 20 minute little segment where
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: we went into her and the father and like we
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: kind of learn more about our character and why the
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: dad did what he did. And like, it would really
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: kind of enrich the story, but I'm like, I don't
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: need a two and a half hour version. So like,
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: obviously you can trim down some of the, I don't know. Like, again,
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: it's like, there wasn't excess stuff going on the opposite.
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: It's like, we feel like we need more almost from
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: everything across the board. So it's hard to decide how
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: you would cut down the rest of it to put
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: in more of story along the way. So it's, yeah,
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: I don't know. It's strange.
- 1:09:50Speaker 8: They should have just stretched it out into like a
- 1:09:52Speaker 8: three-part something.
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: It's on Netflix. I guess it could have been a series.
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: And here's a 12-hour version. That seems excessive maybe. So
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: maybe a limited run.
- 1:10:03Speaker 8: You have a whole episode about the flashbacks.
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: Again, if you just sort of told the story on
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: a grander scale, if we really did spend more time...
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: We could have a whole episode of him on the
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: train and a little bit of flashbacks and him learning
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: what's going on. There is a way to do that
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: where it's a longer tale that you're telling. We, I think,
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: could have benefited from more story at least. I don't
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: know that we needed it to be a series. I
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: think you could do this in a movie, but I
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: don't know. I was trying to think what else. The
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: other main thing I was going to say, the music
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: is really good. Like, it's very deliberate.
- 1:10:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: It starts off with your normal culty vocals of, you know,
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: it sounds like every cult movie that just people sort
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: of chanting. But as we go along, it's like it's
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: got these weird natural noises mixed in, these little pings
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: and clangs that are almost like real world noises that
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: they've just musically sort of timed into the process.
- 1:11:10Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: So that part is cool. But then when we get
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: to the tense moments, it's like really ramped up and
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: it's like, it's really, I think that's a good portion
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: of why those tense ones work so well is because
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: the music is so effective. But yeah, it's like points
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: for the music. Cause all of that stuff seems like
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: it's really, it's really well done.
- 1:11:31Speaker 8: I would find myself like not even noticing how ramped
- 1:11:34Speaker 8: up it was getting until the scene was over and
- 1:11:36Speaker 8: you were like, Oh shit.
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: Well, and then, yeah, I mean just the, to hit
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: again on the good stuff like the visuals yeah mostly
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: like and you see there's i i kind of could
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: have used a little more i think he is a
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: really impressive visual director and we get moments of it
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: like again the train swooping in at the beginning is
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: good the the burning cross scene is amazing like but
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: we also get those the only thing he does that
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: he doesn't seem like he he doesn't shy away from
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: is the the turning of the camera, like when it
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: matches the character. So, I mean, we get like that
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: entire scene after Thomas is like laying on the floor
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: that the camera is turned on its side and we
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: see all of the actions from his point of view.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: So everything is sideways essentially, or when they carry him
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: in and like the kid and he's upside down, the
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: camera's flipped upside. So he doesn't seem to have a
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: problem like manipulating the camera to match the character's point
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: of view, which is kind of cool. But like the other,
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: like there's only certain times when you really see him
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: kind of like showing off at what a good visual
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: director he is. And I'm like, for the other stuff
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: we're missing, you could have kind of thrown some more
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: of that in just to give it a little extra flair.
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: Cause I'm like, yeah, the, the shots of him, like
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: once the other guy takes over and we've got the,
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: the Klansman behind him, but like the weird angle on
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: the statue, like those are just framed so perfectly. And
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: then the, Just all of that stuff when he has
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: no problem just sort of like tilting the camera to
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: put it at a weird angle. You know, it's like
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: you don't, in a more conventional project, you don't get
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: directors that want to do that stuff, that are like
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: willing to do anything out of the ordinary, where he's
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: okay with it, but I almost could have used a
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: little more just to kind of like make the other
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: stuff interesting. Because, yeah, it's like he's definitely got a
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: great visual flair that I kind of want to see. So, yeah,
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: I don't know. Maybe it's just screenplay on this one.
- 1:13:30Speaker 8: I think it is, because the acting was great, and
- 1:13:32Speaker 8: it's really fun to watch, and there were definitely interesting visuals,
- 1:13:37Speaker 8: not only from the way it's shot, but just the
- 1:13:41Speaker 8: characters themselves, or the kind of creepy feeling of it.
- 1:13:45Speaker 8: So definitely still worth a watch, especially if you like
- 1:13:48Speaker 8: cult movies. But I could have just done with a
- 1:13:53Speaker 8: little bit more background.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: I just want to double-check the writing. Damn, he wrote it.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: He did? I was going to say, like, if you
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: wrote the raid and then not this one, it would
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: almost make sense. Because for as much action as is
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: going on in the raid, like, it is really well
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: put together. And, like, we do follow our main character's
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: story the whole way. And we kind of understand what's
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: going on with all these different characters. So, like, yeah,
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: that one seems to hold up a little better. This one, okay, yeah,
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: he did write the raid. He's kind of written all
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: of his main projects, all of his films. He's also
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: a writer. So that's, yeah, that's really weird. You would
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: think he would focus more on the, you know, getting
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: that story ironed out beforehand if you're going to focus
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: so much on being a great visual director. And I
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: don't know. It seems like it worked at least right.
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: I may have to go back and watch the movies
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: before that. He's got a couple other ones, so I
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: want to see what else he does. But yeah. I
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: don't know. I feel like that's the weak point in this.
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: Because visually it's definitely interesting.
- 1:15:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: It's got a lot to offer otherwise, but it leaves
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: a lot of questions. Agreed. Then we have to piece together.
- 1:15:14Speaker 8: Maybe they'll make a prequel.
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: Oh, boy.
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: More prequel action. A reboot. That's what it'll get. Give
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: it about four years and it'll be time for a reboot.
- 1:15:26Speaker 8: Now set in 1910.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: Ah, we've leapt forward in time so many years. Oh, wait.
- 1:15:36Speaker 12: All right.
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: Is there anything else to pass along?
- 1:15:41Speaker 8: No. That's all my thoughts.
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: Figure out what you think about religion as you're going
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: into this. Because I don't know if it's going to...
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: It probably won't sell you on religion. There's not a
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: lot of good points coming through from either version of
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: religion we see, but yeah, you kind of have to
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: put the finishing touches on yourself because we don't really
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: get an answer. So just, I don't know. Don't, don't,
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: don't lean on religion. That's, that's your takeaway.
- 1:16:12Speaker 8: The lesson of the film.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:17Speaker 19: All right.
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: I think that about does it. Thank you for joining
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: us this week. I'm sure you'll be back in the
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: very near future. If our plans come together. Otherwise, that
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: about does it. We will return next time. Same geek feed.
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: Thanks for listening.
- 1:16:33Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 1:16:39Speaker 11: Bye.
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: Bye.
- 1:16:53Speaker 15: I pray to your apostles every night.
- 1:16:57Speaker 11: I pray help them.
- 1:16:59Speaker 15: Guide me to your light. My love for you is strong, Jesus,
- 1:17:04Speaker 15: I'll sing it all night long. I pray to your
- 1:17:08Speaker 15: apostles every night.
- 1:17:12Speaker 11: Oh, St.
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: Thomas, oh, St.
- 1:17:13Speaker 7: John, may the Lord forgive his prodigal son. I've wandered
- 1:17:21Speaker 7: through the desert, out then upon the mountain. So why
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: am I filled with all this doubt?
- 1:17:56Speaker 11: Oh, St. Peter, oh, St.
- 1:18:08Speaker 7: Paul, lead me to him, help me not to fall.
- 1:18:14Speaker 7: In a world full of sinners, I'm among the worst.
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: Save me for the devil saves me first.
- 1:18:22Speaker 15: I've read your apostles, I pray help them guide me
- 1:18:29Speaker 15: to your light. I'm in love with.
- 1:18:33Speaker 11: You and strong Jesus.
- 1:18:34Speaker 15: I'll sing it all night long. I pray to your
- 1:18:38Speaker 15: apostles every night.
- 1:18:43Speaker 17: I pray to your apostles every night.
- 1:18:40Speaker 9: Oh, St.
- 1:18:41Speaker 11: Matthew, oh, St.
- 1:18:43Speaker 17: Mark The road ahead seems so very.
- 1:18:49Speaker 13: Dark Others tried and failed and have died all along.
- 1:19:12Speaker 15: Please lead me on to his highest home. How pretty
- 1:19:17Speaker 15: are apostles every day.
- 1:19:26Speaker 7: And i was just.
- 1:19:32Speaker 17: Like i've never.
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: Even heard of this like he knocks out he's getting
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: so many well he always has like ever since he
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: went into oh my god i'm gonna lose all my
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: money You heard that, right? There's a reason he started
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: making all those ridiculous movies. It's because he was in
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: so much debt. And he had like seven houses and
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: a castle.
