- 0:27Speaker 2: and there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate five
- 0:30Speaker 2: hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing
- 0:34Speaker 2: for the stad of the week. This week we're looking
- 0:36Speaker 2: at the number thirty five. That's how many years old
- 0:39Speaker 2: Phil Taylor is today.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Happy, Thanks Spencer.
- 0:44Speaker 2: What does an old man like you, thirty five years
- 0:47Speaker 2: old do on his thirty fifth birthday?
- 0:49Speaker 3: He didn't shave. I can tell you that, that's sure.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm doing a thing right now. I do this
- 0:53Speaker 4: like maybe once or twice a year. I just like
- 0:55Speaker 4: I think maybe maybe thirty five is the year Riking
- 0:59Speaker 4: Never it never is. I'm hoping thirty six. This is
- 1:02Speaker 4: the magic number. I don't have any plans tonight.
- 1:05Speaker 5: I'm Balder's Gate, No nothing, Brody oh, I Instagram the kids.
- 1:11Speaker 3: After the kids are in bed, Balder's Game.
- 1:13Speaker 4: I might be on the on the docket there. Okay, yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 4: I'm playing. I'm playing. I made Randall a Balder's Gate character,
- 1:18Speaker 4: and I'm he's my main character. So I'm gonna see
- 1:21Speaker 4: what kind of you know, horrible situations I can put
- 1:23Speaker 4: him in.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Happy Birthday, Thank you. Here's our Infrequently Asked Questions segment.
- 1:28Speaker 2: If you have a trivia related question for our crew,
- 1:30Speaker 2: send it to Trivia at the mediater dot com with
- 1:32Speaker 2: the subject line I fak you. Ben Anderson says, I'm
- 1:36Speaker 2: fourteen years old and I have a question for Phil.
- 1:38Speaker 2: What types of software does he use to record trivia
- 1:41Speaker 2: and does it differ from what you use to record
- 1:44Speaker 2: the normal podcast? Birthday, Phil? What do you got for Ben?
- 1:48Speaker 2: He's fourteen years old?
- 1:50Speaker 4: Yeah, hey, Ben, I don't actually use a like a
- 1:54Speaker 4: computer software. When I'm recording the podcast in the studio,
- 1:56Speaker 4: I do everything into this big, this fancy Well, see
- 1:59Speaker 4: if I can move this camera here. If you're watching
- 2:01Speaker 4: on YouTube, Ben, you'll be able to see this.
- 2:02Speaker 3: This is real.
- 2:04Speaker 4: That's the mixing board here. It's an Allen and He
- 2:06Speaker 4: digital mixing board, and I record that onto an SD card.
- 2:10Speaker 4: The podcast on do an SD card, and it's also
- 2:13Speaker 4: being fed into the video hard drive, so I have
- 2:17Speaker 4: got like I've got a backup as well. And then
- 2:18Speaker 4: I take all those files and I put them into
- 2:20Speaker 4: my computer upstairs with my office, and I use a
- 2:22Speaker 4: software called pro Tools, which is kind of like the
- 2:25Speaker 4: film and TV industry kind of. That's the software that
- 2:29Speaker 4: all the audio mixers use, and that's what I learned on,
- 2:31Speaker 4: and I'm really that's the one software I'm very fast on,
- 2:33Speaker 4: and so I'm scared to stop using it because that's
- 2:37Speaker 4: the only one I'm good at the scene.
- 2:39Speaker 3: You're getting probably too old to learn about new software, yep.
- 2:43Speaker 3: And Phil's birthday.
- 2:45Speaker 2: For Phil's birthday, Karin said he's going to get a
- 2:47Speaker 2: new studio in twenty twenty.
- 2:50Speaker 3: You're doing that for me?
- 2:51Speaker 2: Is that a thing you promised?
- 2:52Speaker 5: La morning?
- 2:53Speaker 3: Tell us more about this to get.
- 2:55Speaker 2: A new studio at some point as Phil's thirty fifth birthday.
- 2:58Speaker 3: It sounds like it could be good for all of us.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I might have to wait like six months or so,
- 3:02Speaker 2: but Karin made the promise so big.
- 3:05Speaker 5: You're kind of replaced him with AI, are you?
- 3:09Speaker 3: Why would you even put that thought into the ether?
- 3:12Speaker 6: There?
- 3:13Speaker 2: We have some housekeeping. On a previous episode of Trivia,
- 3:16Speaker 2: we had a question about the National Park Service project
- 3:19Speaker 2: that is quote, a way to introduce children and those
- 3:22Speaker 2: young at heart to the natural wonders of the park.
- 3:25Speaker 2: That was referring to the Junior Ranger program, of which
- 3:28Speaker 2: no one in the room had any experience with. But
- 3:31Speaker 2: then just days later, Phil the Engineer went out and
- 3:34Speaker 2: got himself a few Junior Ranger badges. Phil tell us
- 3:38Speaker 2: about that.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Yeah, this program is way more hardcore than I thought
- 3:41Speaker 4: it was. You can't just walk up to a park
- 3:43Speaker 4: ranger and ask for a badge.
- 3:45Speaker 3: They have you.
- 3:46Speaker 4: There's a whole booklet and depending on your age, you
- 3:48Speaker 4: have to complete a certain number of activities within the park.
- 3:51Speaker 4: You know, sort of like find this or find that,
- 3:53Speaker 4: or you know there's stuff like crossword puzzles and word
- 3:55Speaker 4: searches and mazes and everything. The older you are, the
- 3:58Speaker 4: more activities you have to do. And you show you
- 4:00Speaker 4: bring that to a park ranger once it's completed. Uh,
- 4:04Speaker 4: And then they they ask you questions. They kind of
- 4:06Speaker 4: like quiz you about stuff that you've seen, and then
- 4:08Speaker 4: they make you take up a pledge an oath, And
- 4:11Speaker 4: it's different at every park and and every national monument,
- 4:14Speaker 4: and then after you do that, you get a you
- 4:16Speaker 4: get a little Ranger badge.
- 4:17Speaker 2: What did your boys have to do to earn those badges?
- 4:20Speaker 4: Well, I mean, so like the six year old, the
- 4:22Speaker 4: seven year old only had to complete seven of the
- 4:24Speaker 4: activities with the twelve year old had to complete twelve.
- 4:26Speaker 4: So that's sort of like the range. But then I
- 4:29Speaker 4: will I'm going to call out. So we went to
- 4:31Speaker 4: Mount Rushmore, we went to the bad Lands, and we
- 4:33Speaker 4: went to the Devil's Tower National Monument and all of
- 4:36Speaker 4: those Oh sorry, I'm forgetting one. I think we went
- 4:41Speaker 4: to four different but but I the Mount Rushmore bad
- 4:45Speaker 4: Lands all made us. They were really strict about completing
- 4:49Speaker 4: the packet. But oh yeah, wind Cave. That's right, Wind
- 4:52Speaker 4: Cave in South Dakota. They were all very strict. But
- 4:54Speaker 4: there was a guy at Devil's parka who was just
- 4:56Speaker 4: handing out badges like candy and I'm not gonna I'm
- 4:58Speaker 4: not gonna give his name get in trouble, but it
- 5:01Speaker 4: definitely made it feel less special.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Were the boys stoked on them or was.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Like oh yeah, I know that.
- 5:06Speaker 4: That that became the activity for the trip was collecting
- 5:08Speaker 4: these badges, so, I mean, yeah, it's it's effective, it's working.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Great job National Parks.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Nate was here that day we talked about those. Does
- 5:14Speaker 2: anyone else in the room have a Junior Ranger badge?
- 5:17Speaker 3: Yeah, well my boys do.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Uh huh from Rocky Mountain National Park and Yellowstone.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Were they stoked on that or was it?
- 5:25Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 5:26Speaker 5: I mean it was a while ago now, but yeah
- 5:28Speaker 5: they were stoked.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Now a coveted piece of merch at Phil's home. All right,
- 5:34Speaker 2: The Shelby Index for today is a five, so I'm
- 5:37Speaker 2: putting some perfect score alert and with that we're onto
- 5:40Speaker 2: the game of trivia played the Dropville. Look, I don't
- 5:46Speaker 2: need to know what I shoultay under wand everything was
- 5:50Speaker 2: just tend to win everything demon Question one. The topic
- 6:02Speaker 2: is wildlife, and this will be multiple choice. Which of
- 6:06Speaker 2: these animals is a pacoderm? Is it a goose, a hippo,
- 6:12Speaker 2: a newt or a bear? Which of these animals is
- 6:18Speaker 2: a pacaderm, goose, hippo, newt, or bear? Brody and Nate
- 6:26Speaker 2: quick to answer, Nate, do you have this one right?
- 6:29Speaker 2: I think?
- 6:29Speaker 8: So it's like somewhere what's Steve always talking about? That's
- 6:33Speaker 8: the one. I think he's got it.
- 6:35Speaker 9: Brody, do you know this unless you're pulling a fast
- 6:38Speaker 9: one on us, which like you never used to do,
- 6:41Speaker 9: but lately it seems like it happens now. And then
- 6:43Speaker 9: which of these animals is a packaderm, goose, hippo, newt bear?
- 6:49Speaker 2: You're honest? How confident? Are you?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Pretty?
- 6:53Speaker 2: You got this one right? It's everybody ready, go ahead
- 6:56Speaker 2: and reveal your answers. We have Nate and Sarah and
- 7:00Speaker 2: Iiannis and Seth. The whole room says hippo. The whole
- 7:03Speaker 2: room got it right. The correct answer is a hippo.
- 7:07Speaker 2: A pacoderm is a non ruminant animal with thick skin
- 7:11Speaker 2: and hoofs or nails, such as elephants, rhinos, and hippos.
- 7:15Speaker 2: It used to be scientifically accepted as a class of mammal,
- 7:19Speaker 2: but biologists later learned that they're not that closely related.
- 7:23Speaker 2: PACKADERM is still used as an informal grouping at zoos,
- 7:26Speaker 2: though question two the topic is gear. This next great
- 7:30Speaker 2: question is via Miguel Rivera. What is the eleven letter
- 7:35Speaker 2: instrument that measures the speed of a bullet or arrow
- 7:39Speaker 2: in flight? What is the eleven letter instrument that measures
- 7:47Speaker 2: the speed of a bullet or arrow in flight. Nate
- 7:52Speaker 2: and Brody again quick to answer, do either of you
- 7:55Speaker 2: boys own one of these eleven letter instruments?
- 7:59Speaker 5: No, but got one in my truck right now.
- 8:02Speaker 2: There's a little hint for maybe Jannis knows the contents
- 8:05Speaker 2: of Brody's pickup. Johanny, do you know what's in Brodie's
- 8:09Speaker 2: pickup right now?
- 8:10Speaker 3: I was with Brody yesterday and we almost used this instrument?
- 8:17Speaker 2: What have you gotten this right? If this didn't just
- 8:19Speaker 2: happen yesterday? Okay, yes, I would have again. Question two,
- 8:23Speaker 2: the topic is gear. What is the eleven letter instrument
- 8:27Speaker 2: that measures the speed of a bullet or arrow in flight?
- 8:31Speaker 3: I've used a few over the years, always fussy these instruments.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Maybe a cloudy day, I was just gonna say, I
- 8:42Speaker 2: feel like lighting is a big part of that which
- 8:44Speaker 2: like in a machine shed versus outside.
- 8:47Speaker 3: You said you own one? I have over the years.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I don't think I own one at the moment. The
- 8:52Speaker 3: one I own is very great.
- 8:55Speaker 8: Is it the normal one everybody's got.
- 8:57Speaker 3: You'll have to tell us about it after we get
- 8:59Speaker 3: the answer.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Every Are you ready go ahead and reveal your answers?
- 9:03Speaker 2: We have Nate saying chronograph, Sarah says speedometer, and Seth
- 9:10Speaker 2: say chronograph. Corinne says O meter, and Brody says, uh, chronometer.
- 9:19Speaker 2: The correct answer is chronograph. I'm sorry, I gotta see
- 9:24Speaker 2: if that's that's also accepted.
- 9:26Speaker 3: I've never heard that interesting because they're both eleven chronometer.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I see that as a watch.
- 9:35Speaker 7: I think that's a rolling watches special.
- 9:40Speaker 3: How do we both.
- 9:42Speaker 1: That's to remind calling uh, the measures speed of a
- 9:50Speaker 1: bullet chronograph, it's.
- 9:56Speaker 8: A like it's a timekeeper that's certified by an astronomical
- 10:03Speaker 8: like observatory.
- 10:04Speaker 2: We're not going to accept that.
- 10:06Speaker 7: So those watches chronometers are always better than.
- 10:11Speaker 2: There are three primary types of chronographs that outdoorsmen use.
- 10:16Speaker 2: There are optical chronos, which have sensors the projectile passes through.
- 10:21Speaker 2: There are magnetic chronos, which typically attached to the barrel
- 10:24Speaker 2: of your gun like a bayonet. And then there are
- 10:27Speaker 2: Doppler chronos, which use radar waves to track the projectile.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Which one do you have, Seth?
- 10:33Speaker 3: I have the garment one, which is okay. I was
- 10:38Speaker 3: told recently that that one's not as good as the labrador.
- 10:42Speaker 3: It's not as consistent.
- 10:44Speaker 10: As far as accuracy. Yeah, I'm gonna say because it
- 10:48Speaker 10: works way better than the labrador.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yeah, elaborator is a little more finicky.
- 10:52Speaker 8: Which one's the one with the little metal rods?
- 10:54Speaker 2: And that would be the optical. If you're on a
- 10:58Speaker 2: machine shed, your arrow may not be seen the same
- 11:02Speaker 2: as if it was a crowny day, cloudy day. Question three,
- 11:06Speaker 2: the topic is conservation. What state is Great Basin National
- 11:11Speaker 2: Park located in? And the room is stumped.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Oh no, I'm not stumped, Okay, just taking their time, either.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Lived in the state or the one next There was a.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Hint for the rest of the room. What state is
- 11:27Speaker 2: Great Basin National Park? We have six blank whiteboards in
- 11:32Speaker 2: the room right now?
- 11:35Speaker 3: Right?
- 11:37Speaker 2: What state is Great Basin National Park? Located in Yonni?
- 11:43Speaker 2: Thinks he's lived in that state or near that state.
- 11:46Speaker 5: That's a big hint, man.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I've lived in a lot of places, Brody, not that many. Yeah,
- 11:57Speaker 3: but I'm telling you I can't remember if it was
- 11:58Speaker 3: in that state or the one next to it. That
- 12:01Speaker 3: really adds a lot of lots of states in that one.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Right, What states is Great Basin National Park? Located in Nate?
- 12:14Speaker 2: How do you feel about your answer?
- 12:16Speaker 8: I've give myself like one and six.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Okay, Seth, how do you feel about your answer?
- 12:20Speaker 3: It's kind of a guess.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It's up to you two to get the perfect game today.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yanni and Seth, we're already out of it. Ex Yanni
- 12:29Speaker 2: and Brody, We're already out.
- 12:31Speaker 3: It's a lot of pressure.
- 12:32Speaker 2: What state is Great Basin National Park located in Is
- 12:36Speaker 2: everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 12:40Speaker 2: Nate saying Utah, Sarah, Utah, Yannis Utah, Seth utah, krinne Nevada, Brody, Nevada,
- 12:49Speaker 2: and he crossed out? Would you cross out?
- 12:51Speaker 4: Really?
- 12:52Speaker 7: I have a chance at maybe getting this right because Brody.
- 12:56Speaker 5: I don't know is Neveda?
- 13:02Speaker 2: I got it right. Great Basin National Park is located
- 13:07Speaker 2: in eastern Nevada along the Utah border. It was established
- 13:11Speaker 2: in nineteen eighty six and is one of the least
- 13:13Speaker 2: visited parks in the country. Great Basin is where the
- 13:16Speaker 2: Forgotten Winchester was discovered by park employees in twenty fourteen.
- 13:21Speaker 2: The one hundred and forty three year old gun was
- 13:23Speaker 2: found leaning against a juniper tree, with archaeologists speculating it
- 13:28Speaker 2: was left there by its owner over a century ago.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Here is a picture that was taken on the day
- 13:33Speaker 2: of its discovery.
- 13:34Speaker 8: That's so cool.
- 13:35Speaker 3: That's very cool.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I've never heard that the forgotten Winchester discovered in twenty fourteen.
- 13:40Speaker 2: It is now in their visitor center. You can go
- 13:42Speaker 2: see the thing.
- 13:43Speaker 8: I feel like you'd have to rip up that whole
- 13:45Speaker 8: tree and make like a diorama of it.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Well, actually, a wildfire passed through there, I think a
- 13:51Speaker 2: year or two later, and this thing would have just
- 13:54Speaker 2: been forgotten that for real. But so they found it
- 13:57Speaker 2: just in the nicked time, standing there just like the
- 14:00Speaker 2: day someone left it.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I'd like to know. It's good to know there are
- 14:05Speaker 3: places in this country where is something that big could
- 14:09Speaker 3: be leaning against a tree and not be seen by
- 14:12Speaker 3: a human for over n.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I like that observation, especially when you have someone negative
- 14:16Speaker 2: like Steve who says there's too many people and not
- 14:19Speaker 2: enough things to do in national parks. Will look at there, Steve,
- 14:22Speaker 2: there's guns out there to be found that have just
- 14:24Speaker 2: been sitting there for one hundred years.
- 14:26Speaker 7: You've just changed his whole mind.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Unlikely grow into that tree, they said, So the butt
- 14:34Speaker 2: of it was in five inches of soil at that
- 14:36Speaker 2: part at that point, so it was starting to he
- 14:41Speaker 2: rode away. But look at the stock to there's some
- 14:43Speaker 2: enormous cracks there, laid there for just one hundred years.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Question for the topic is hunting. This is our listener
- 14:50Speaker 2: question of the Week, which was won by Sam rival
- 14:53Speaker 2: for sending this great question. Sam is going to get
- 14:56Speaker 2: a board game signed by the crew if you want
- 14:58Speaker 2: a chance to win our listener question of the Week
- 15:00Speaker 2: that sent your question to Trivia at the medeater dot com.
- 15:04Speaker 2: The d h p P vaccine for dogs is meant
- 15:08Speaker 2: to prevent blank, hepatitis, para influenza, and parvo. So we
- 15:17Speaker 2: know three of the things it's meant to prevent. We're
- 15:20Speaker 2: looking for one more. The d HPP vaccine for dogs
- 15:26Speaker 2: is meant to prevent blank, hepatitis, para, influenza, and parvo.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Nate very quick to answer, Sarah has now joined him. Sarah,
- 15:37Speaker 2: do you have this one right?
- 15:39Speaker 6: I have a virus okay, that could in theory appear
- 15:43Speaker 6: in dogs.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Nate have confident.
- 15:48Speaker 8: I think this might be a people virus.
- 15:50Speaker 6: Does Chip have this vaccine?
- 15:52Speaker 8: Yeah, but I don't know what the D is in it.
- 15:55Speaker 2: The d h for dogs is meant to prevent blank yeah,
- 16:02Speaker 2: hepatitis and hinting Nate, did your answers start with the D? Yeah,
- 16:09Speaker 2: okay it did.
- 16:10Speaker 6: I think if it's starting with the D is a hint.
- 16:13Speaker 6: It's pretty far off based, and I think it's going
- 16:16Speaker 6: to get it right to begin with.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's a valid d.
- 16:19Speaker 2: HPP vaccine for dogs is meant to prevent blank, hepatitis, para, influenza,
- 16:25Speaker 2: and parvo.
- 16:26Speaker 8: I feel good now, I changed up. I feel real strong.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Nate likes his answer, Brody, do you like your answer?
- 16:33Speaker 5: We'll find out.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Okay, we have six dog owners at the table today.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Karns making up for me for not owning a dog.
- 16:41Speaker 2: She has four. Now, how did you? How did you
- 16:46Speaker 2: get the fourth one? I haven't heard the story yet.
- 16:51Speaker 3: She has the biggest of dogs.
- 16:52Speaker 5: The what's the weight she's missing?
- 16:56Speaker 2: Has?
- 16:56Speaker 7: Medium is probably like fifteen No, well, old.
- 17:06Speaker 6: I was eating lunch on the little balcony on the
- 17:08Speaker 6: second floor last week and I see you be in
- 17:10Speaker 6: the pond. I look down and Pinata has an entire
- 17:13Speaker 6: dead fish.
- 17:16Speaker 2: It's a great day.
- 17:17Speaker 7: It was a desiccated trout or white fish on the
- 17:20Speaker 7: back of our little pond here, which she proceeded to
- 17:23Speaker 7: later vomit onto the carpet in my office.
- 17:26Speaker 8: Is that also? What's in front of the door? What
- 17:30Speaker 8: you're talking about the front door?
- 17:32Speaker 3: No?
- 17:33Speaker 8: No, okay, it looks like a vomited up fish. This
- 17:36Speaker 8: is last check it out later.
- 17:37Speaker 5: Oh, shoot, floor the second floor is like dog bombit.
- 17:41Speaker 6: Dog shit zone in the third floor is pretty safe, I.
- 17:45Speaker 8: Think, yeah that second.
- 17:46Speaker 2: Yeah, how did you get the fourth dog?
- 17:49Speaker 10: Uh?
- 17:49Speaker 7: So? Pinata is my partner Matt's daughter's dog that she
- 17:55Speaker 7: adopted a couple of months ago. And it used to
- 17:58Speaker 7: be like fifty to fifty both of the houses. And
- 18:02Speaker 7: then she really just ended up at our place and and.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Is our puppy? No good for Pinata?
- 18:07Speaker 7: Yeah, she's very happy. She's best friends with squid again.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Question for the d HPP vaccine for dogs is meant
- 18:14Speaker 2: to prevent blank hepatitis, para, influenza, and parvo. Is everybody ready?
- 18:22Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answers, with Nate saying distemper
- 18:30Speaker 2: diphtheria seth not an answer, Krinn diphtheria, brody rabies. The
- 18:37Speaker 2: correct answer is distemper. The d HPP vaccine is considered
- 18:46Speaker 2: a core vaccine, meaning it's recommended that all dogs get it.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Distemper is a highly contagious virus that also affects foxes, coyotes, wolves, raccoons, skunks,
- 18:57Speaker 2: and ferrets. There's a fifty percent fatality rate for dogs
- 19:01Speaker 2: who have it, with survivors often left with nervous system damage.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Is distemper, hepatitis, para, influenza, and parvo.
- 19:10Speaker 8: Can I ask a dog question real quick?
- 19:12Speaker 2: Sure?
- 19:13Speaker 8: The rattlesnake venom vaccine thoughts anybody?
- 19:18Speaker 3: We did it for our dog and it just absessed
- 19:21Speaker 3: and it was another vet visit. That sounds terrible. I
- 19:26Speaker 3: recommend not doing it. Okay.
- 19:27Speaker 2: We had a professional vet write an article for our
- 19:30Speaker 2: website about his thoughts on the vaccine. I don't remember
- 19:35Speaker 2: what his conclusion was, but you and anyone else carey
- 19:37Speaker 2: about curious about that could go read that. Cool question
- 19:41Speaker 2: five the topic is fishing. This next great question is
- 19:44Speaker 2: via Daniel Kanuth. This holy tool, which is also called
- 19:49Speaker 2: a persuader, is the small club that anglers use to
- 19:53Speaker 2: kill fish.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Where is it?
- 19:57Speaker 2: Oh, we have one in the room somewhere.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Walked off with.
- 20:00Speaker 4: It behind Spencer's.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Holy h O l y. This holy tool, which is
- 20:10Speaker 2: also called a persuader is the small club that anglers
- 20:14Speaker 2: use to kill fish. Brody very quick to answer.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Are you looking for a specific name.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Yes, it's a holy name. This holy tool, which is
- 20:25Speaker 2: also called a persuader, is the small club that anglers
- 20:29Speaker 2: used to kill fish. Brody has found one in the
- 20:33Speaker 2: podcast thing tell us about fifty years ago. What's it
- 20:37Speaker 2: made out of?
- 20:40Speaker 3: Steel?
- 20:40Speaker 2: Rod?
- 20:41Speaker 5: Homemade handle? Little garden hose on there?
- 20:45Speaker 2: Why why the garden host? What does that add to it?
- 20:51Speaker 5: So it doesn't make a bunch of noise rattling around
- 20:53Speaker 5: in aluminum boat?
- 20:54Speaker 2: Okay, that's a well thought out.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Persuade among other things.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I think what else is that killed?
- 21:00Speaker 3: Oh?
- 21:01Speaker 5: I think this is primarily salmon killing machine?
- 21:04Speaker 2: This holy tool, which is also called a persuader, is
- 21:09Speaker 2: the small club that anglers used to kill fish. Now,
- 21:12Speaker 2: did your dad call it the answer we're looking for?
- 21:15Speaker 2: Did he call it a persuader? Did he call it
- 21:16Speaker 2: something else?
- 21:17Speaker 5: He had a name for it. It wasn't persuader, but
- 21:22Speaker 5: it was along that line.
- 21:23Speaker 3: I'll have to.
- 21:25Speaker 5: We'll update it later, but I can't remember his exact
- 21:28Speaker 5: word for it.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Yanni, how you doing over there?
- 21:33Speaker 3: I don't know the answer I'm trying to make one up.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Seth, is there one of these in your boat?
- 21:40Speaker 3: I used the backside of my gaff.
- 21:42Speaker 8: Okay, so that's probably not gad.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I don't call it. I don't call it anything.
- 21:48Speaker 5: If you got a good stout scrub brush in your boat,
- 21:51Speaker 5: that'll work.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, Nate, do you have this one right?
- 21:54Speaker 3: No, dude, total.
- 21:56Speaker 2: This holy tool, which is also called a persuader, is
- 22:00Speaker 2: the small club that anglers used to kill fish. It's
- 22:04Speaker 2: everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 22:09Speaker 2: Nate's saying, iron cross Sarah without an answer, Giannis says
- 22:13Speaker 2: Devil's club, Seth without an answer, Karinn says au bonker
- 22:19Speaker 2: a bunker baton crux uh, and Brody says priest. The
- 22:25Speaker 2: correct answer is priest. Brody got that one right. The
- 22:33Speaker 2: name comes from the notion that anglers are administering the
- 22:36Speaker 2: last rights to the fish before crushing their brain. Priests
- 22:40Speaker 2: have also been used as bold murder weapons and pop culture,
- 22:43Speaker 2: such as the BBC series Father Brown, the Ethan Hawk
- 22:47Speaker 2: podcast Fish Priest, and the Sam Mills novel Poacher's Priest.
- 22:52Speaker 10: Man, if you whack a halbit on the nose right
- 22:54Speaker 10: with one of those things instant death.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Lights out you and I I heard about yesterday. Couple
- 23:01Speaker 3: of anglers in the room will appreciate this. We're talking
- 23:04Speaker 3: about bringing large halib board. And a fellow's telling me
- 23:07Speaker 3: a story about being on a sailboat that he's sailed
- 23:10Speaker 3: up and down six different times between here and not Montana,
- 23:14Speaker 3: but on the west coast of the US and Alaska.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And he was up I think he said, misty fjords
- 23:20Speaker 3: and they landed a two hundred pounder and he goes
- 23:23Speaker 3: and you know, I always keep a little vodka in
- 23:26Speaker 3: a squirt bottle because you just give them a little
- 23:28Speaker 3: squirt of vodka on their gills and boom, oh yeah
- 23:33Speaker 3: aness size just like mellow yellow, and then you can
- 23:36Speaker 3: go to work.
- 23:37Speaker 5: I tried petting them on the belly like Heather's dad did.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Doesn't work from me, like just putting them to sleep. Yeah,
- 23:44Speaker 5: he's got the magic touch, because it did not work
- 23:46Speaker 5: for me.
- 23:47Speaker 3: A big one.
- 23:47Speaker 10: You want to you want to make sure you're past
- 23:49Speaker 10: the belly rough stage before you bring it in the boat,
- 23:52Speaker 10: because yeah, it's chaos.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Phil, we are halfway through the game of trivia. Give
- 23:57Speaker 2: us a scoreboard update.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Yeah, halftime here everyone on the board up at the
- 24:03Speaker 4: bottom of the barrel or Sarah, and after that are
- 24:08Speaker 4: Seth and Karn with two points apiece and tied up
- 24:11Speaker 4: in first are Brody and Nate with three points.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Shelby is going to be in the running to win
- 24:15Speaker 2: this question six, The topic is cooking. McCormick says, this herb,
- 24:25Speaker 2: which has leaves that resemble pine needles, has in quote,
- 24:29Speaker 2: unmistakable woody fragrance. McCormick says, this herb, which has leaves
- 24:36Speaker 2: that resemble pine needles, has an unmistakable woody fragrance. Sarah, Krinn,
- 24:44Speaker 2: Nate Brody all quick to answer, Grindy, have this one right.
- 24:50Speaker 5: If I'm right, I got some growing right now.
- 24:52Speaker 3: M hot tip.
- 24:54Speaker 2: The room is very confident on this one. Oh and Nate,
- 24:59Speaker 2: that would be.
- 24:59Speaker 5: In some in the garden main competition.
- 25:03Speaker 2: McCormick says, this herb, which has leaves that resemble pine needles,
- 25:08Speaker 2: that's an unmistakable woody fragrance.
- 25:11Speaker 5: Also not sure that's how I described the fragrance.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I'll be I thought about that, but then I was like, well,
- 25:19Speaker 2: I don't know how I would describe it.
- 25:21Speaker 3: I'm gonna smell it.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I like what McCormick says. It's everybody ready, go ahead
- 25:26Speaker 2: and reveal your answers. We have Nate and Sarah and
- 25:30Speaker 2: the honest the whole room says, Rosemary.
- 25:36Speaker 8: You made me question my answer.
- 25:38Speaker 2: The correct answer is rosemary. Rosemary flavor has been described
- 25:42Speaker 2: as piney, peppery, lemonie, savory, and woodsy. For that reason,
- 25:47Speaker 2: it naturally complements wild game. Danielle Pruett features rosemary in
- 25:51Speaker 2: her article called how to Make the Perfect Steak Sauce,
- 25:55Speaker 2: and Steve Vernella uses it in his Grilled squirrel with lemon,
- 25:58Speaker 2: thyme and rosemary recipe. You can get both of those
- 26:02Speaker 2: on the meat eater dot com. I love rosemary and potatoes,
- 26:07Speaker 2: yep fries. Question seven, the topic is hunting. Dale tells
- 26:15Speaker 2: Hank that the best part of deer hunting is quote
- 26:18Speaker 2: getting out in the woods away from the government. In
- 26:21Speaker 2: a nineteen ninety eight episode of this show, You've Got
- 26:27Speaker 2: six blank Whiteboards in the Room, Dale tells Hank that
- 26:31Speaker 2: the best part of deer hunting is quote getting out
- 26:35Speaker 2: in the woods away from the government. In a nineteen
- 26:38Speaker 2: ninety eight episode of this show, Krin, do you have
- 26:41Speaker 2: this one right. No, No, I.
- 26:43Speaker 8: Think I know the show and can't remember the name.
- 26:47Speaker 2: This may be a zero percenter.
- 26:50Speaker 3: No, it won't be. Okay knows it? Got an answer.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Dale tells Hank that the best part of deer hunting
- 26:58Speaker 2: is getting out in the wood away from the government.
- 27:01Speaker 2: In a nineteen ninety eight episode of this show, Phil,
- 27:05Speaker 2: would you get this one right?
- 27:08Speaker 3: I would.
- 27:09Speaker 4: I didn't watch a lot of this show, but I
- 27:11Speaker 4: know the characters names just through like cultural osmosis.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Uh huh. That's exactly why I know. I'm right. Okay, Phil,
- 27:18Speaker 3: just there we go. It'll just made me feel real good.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Thanks, Phil Sethy have this one right?
- 27:24Speaker 3: I don't. I don't know, Okay, it's just the first
- 27:26Speaker 3: thing I thought of.
- 27:27Speaker 2: You have a show from the nineties that maybe has
- 27:30Speaker 2: characters named Phil.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Are you gonna be able to do an impression of
- 27:34Speaker 3: one of the characters after this?
- 27:37Speaker 4: Nothing I love more than when Spencer and honest impression that.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Dale tells Hank that the best part of.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Brody I can't believe you can't remember the name of
- 27:47Speaker 3: the show escaping me.
- 27:49Speaker 5: And the thing is, are they doing a reboot of this?
- 27:51Speaker 3: Wow?
- 27:52Speaker 2: There's a hint from Brody Dale tells Hank that the
- 27:56Speaker 2: best part of deer hunting is getting out in the
- 27:58Speaker 2: woods away from the government. In a nineteen ninety eight
- 28:01Speaker 2: episode of This.
- 28:02Speaker 5: Show, No matter how many times he said, and.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Brody's hint an't help anybody despite him being right. Is
- 28:10Speaker 2: everybody ready?
- 28:11Speaker 3: I wonder if Shelby got this?
- 28:13Speaker 2: Go ahead and who nothing happened? Go ahead and reveal
- 28:21Speaker 2: your answers. We have Nate saying the show of the General,
- 28:25Speaker 2: Lee Sarah is not an answer, Yanna says, King of
- 28:29Speaker 2: the Hill, Seth King of the Hill, Krinn Beverly Hills,
- 28:33Speaker 2: nine oh two one oh, Brody, King of the Hill,
- 28:35Speaker 2: he got it. The correct answer is King of the Hill,
- 28:42Speaker 2: right at the boss. Getting out in the woods away
- 28:45Speaker 2: from the government is also Steve's favorite part of hunting.
- 28:48Speaker 2: In that episode, Bobby goes on a high fence deer
- 28:51Speaker 2: hunt in Texas but declines to shoot a baited buck. Then,
- 28:55Speaker 2: later that day, while learning to drive, he kills a
- 28:58Speaker 2: white tail with his dad's pickup. Dale says, they're going
- 29:01Speaker 2: to quote take old mister buck right to the rendering
- 29:03Speaker 2: plant for sausagification.
- 29:07Speaker 3: You know, I can tell you what Steve would have
- 29:09Speaker 3: said about that Winchester right, and about why it was
- 29:15Speaker 3: the whole thing actually buttresses his argument because the reason
- 29:20Speaker 3: he doesn't like national parks is people don't really go
- 29:22Speaker 3: out and enjoy him as much. You can't do things.
- 29:25Speaker 2: That's what he says. They're a place you go to
- 29:27Speaker 2: not do.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Still, yeah, and be cause I feel like if that
- 29:31Speaker 3: gun was laying against any old tree outside of a
- 29:33Speaker 3: national park, the likelihood of it getting found in the
- 29:36Speaker 3: last hundred years is much much higher because of the
- 29:38Speaker 3: way hunters and anglers explore in national parks is a
- 29:42Speaker 3: lot less exploring, going on a lot more just driving,
- 29:45Speaker 3: staying on the trails.
- 29:46Speaker 8: That's think about how many times that's happened with just
- 29:49Speaker 8: some dude and he just took it home and nobody
- 29:51Speaker 8: ever heard about it.
- 29:53Speaker 2: So having what now he's saying, like that happens on
- 29:56Speaker 2: some BLM land, are you saying?
- 29:58Speaker 8: And then some dude just like you know, outside the
- 30:00Speaker 8: park on BLM takes it home and just now it
- 30:03Speaker 8: sits above his fireplace and nobody knows about it. He dies,
- 30:05Speaker 8: his kids don't know what's going on, and goes in
- 30:07Speaker 8: the trash and you don't get a cure of some
- 30:08Speaker 8: cool anecdote about a gun left there for one hundred years.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I think if you don't like parks, just you're just
- 30:14Speaker 2: doing them wrong.
- 30:15Speaker 3: I think.
- 30:15Speaker 6: I think that's right.
- 30:16Speaker 5: Yeah, better to have them than not have them, I'll
- 30:18Speaker 5: tell you.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Question eight the topic is conservation. This next great question
- 30:23Speaker 2: is via Matt Bauer. What does the forestry acronym T
- 30:28Speaker 2: s I stand for? Oh? Thanks, Spencer, What does the
- 30:33Speaker 2: forestry acronym T s I stand for? Yanni and Seth?
- 30:38Speaker 2: They're gonna get this one right for sure.
- 30:41Speaker 4: Well, damn, Bobby, it's great you Phil. I know that,
- 30:51Speaker 4: Hank says Bobby a lot. That's what I know about
- 30:54Speaker 4: King of the Hill.
- 30:55Speaker 2: That's good. What does the forestry acronym T s I
- 30:58Speaker 2: I stand for? I think, yeah, he was hoping for?
- 31:01Speaker 2: Is it boom houer? That's like just mumble talk the
- 31:06Speaker 2: impression you're hoping you wanted, Hank.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Yeah, Bill nailed it again.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Question eight the topic is conservation. What does the forestry
- 31:14Speaker 2: acronym T s I stand for? Nate? Do you have this.
- 31:23Speaker 8: Apart the second half?
- 31:25Speaker 3: That's all we talked about.
- 31:28Speaker 6: I start with the right letters. One of them at
- 31:31Speaker 6: least is relevant to the topic.
- 31:32Speaker 7: My brain stopped working a few years ago.
- 31:34Speaker 6: It's probably the lasagna.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Oh, I definitely feel like I ate too many cars too.
- 31:42Speaker 3: How we do it over?
- 31:43Speaker 5: I'm just making something.
- 31:45Speaker 2: What does the forestry acronym t s I stand for.
- 31:53Speaker 3: One of my favorite things to do these days?
- 31:56Speaker 2: If you follow Yanni on Instagram, if you pay attention
- 32:00Speaker 2: to when he's on Meat Eater Radio, they'll get this
- 32:03Speaker 2: one right.
- 32:04Speaker 6: So that makes me second guess My answer.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Is everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 32:11Speaker 2: have Nate saying tree stand Improvement, Sarah Timber Sale Initiative,
- 32:17Speaker 2: Yanna's timber stand Improvement, Seth timber stand Improvement, Krin without
- 32:23Speaker 2: an answer, Brody Total Soil Index. The correct answer is
- 32:28Speaker 2: timber stand improvement. I don't think we're gonna get it
- 32:32Speaker 2: to Nate. That becomes something else. That's like change, that's
- 32:37Speaker 2: like changing racket, ratchet straps.
- 32:41Speaker 8: I'm talking about improving the stand of tree of trees.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Yes, I is timber.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Seth and Yannish, dude, you're gonna that's trash. Timber stand
- 32:56Speaker 2: improvement is a way to remove unwanted trees from a forest.
- 33:01Speaker 2: The goal is often to simulate to stimulate new growth
- 33:04Speaker 2: and increase the productivity of trees. T s I can
- 33:08Speaker 2: come in the form of prescribed burns, chemical control, or logging. Johanny,
- 33:15Speaker 2: do you think he should get it for tree stand improvement?
- 33:17Speaker 3: No?
- 33:18Speaker 2: Okay, Seth as the forestry man, should he get it
- 33:21Speaker 2: for tree stand improvement?
- 33:23Speaker 3: Because if you took away improvement and you said, okay,
- 33:26Speaker 3: well what is a tree stand? No one ever is
- 33:28Speaker 3: going to say a stand up trees.
- 33:30Speaker 8: A forester would, a hunter might not.
- 33:34Speaker 3: Tree stand improvement.
- 33:35Speaker 8: Yeah, okay, tree stand improvement can refer to timber stand improvement,
- 33:40Speaker 8: which is a land practice.
- 33:41Speaker 3: Blah blah, Google.
- 33:47Speaker 7: Google.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Gemini didn't go to college for forest.
- 33:55Speaker 2: What do you have on t s I. You do
- 33:58Speaker 2: a lot of t s I when you were in college.
- 34:00Speaker 10: Oh yeah, yeah, I've done it. Uh, you know, for
- 34:03Speaker 10: personal use to and the hunting property.
- 34:06Speaker 2: And pa you get jealousy Yanni talking about all that
- 34:09Speaker 2: ts Oh I.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Do I missdoing that stuff. It's fun.
- 34:12Speaker 10: It's fun to uh, you know, manipulate the landscape in
- 34:15Speaker 10: a positive way and then see it pay off.
- 34:17Speaker 2: It's a fun way to look at it. Yanni has
- 34:19Speaker 2: a ts I going this year.
- 34:22Speaker 3: You know, I personally haven't been doing as much. The
- 34:25Speaker 3: logger did most of the TSI.
- 34:27Speaker 2: It's done for twenty five at this point.
- 34:30Speaker 3: I'm gonna be there for a short couple of days
- 34:32Speaker 3: to do some herbicide application in October, and if I
- 34:36Speaker 3: have time, I'll maybe bust out the chainsaw and do
- 34:38Speaker 3: a little ts I.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Okay, Nate is still googling, Nate.
- 34:42Speaker 3: I'm looking at my trail campig. I got it. It's
- 34:46Speaker 3: pretty popped in this afternoon.
- 34:47Speaker 2: All right, Phil, let's get a scoreboard update with two
- 34:50Speaker 2: questions to go.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Yeah, well, Seth has scared.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Sarah with two points, come in with three, Nate and
- 35:01Speaker 4: the Honest with four points apiece. And then now tied
- 35:04Speaker 4: up in first place are Brody and Seth with five points.
- 35:07Speaker 3: And how many questions we have left?
- 35:08Speaker 2: Two left? The topic is fishing. This ten letter word
- 35:16Speaker 2: is defined as quote the junction of two rivers, especially
- 35:20Speaker 2: rivers of approximately equal with This ten letter word is
- 35:27Speaker 2: defined as the junction of two rivers, especially rivers of
- 35:32Speaker 2: approximately equal With Brody and Seth both confident, Nate joining
- 35:41Speaker 2: them as well. Yanni is doing his Hangman. He likes
- 35:46Speaker 2: his answer. This is question nine. This ten letter word
- 35:52Speaker 2: is defined as the junction of two rivers, especially rivers
- 35:56Speaker 2: of approximately equal With.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Some friends, I own a marijuana store in three rivers,
- 36:03Speaker 3: Michigan by this name.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Ooh, that's a good name for marijuana store. I like that.
- 36:08Speaker 8: I don't think I have this right.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 36:18Speaker 2: have Nate's saying confluence, Sarah conversion, Yannis confluence, Seth confluence,
- 36:25Speaker 2: Corinn without an answer, Brody confluence. The correct answer is
- 36:29Speaker 2: the marijuana store confluence. Confluences can either be two rivers
- 36:34Speaker 2: forming a new river, such as where the Jefferson and
- 36:38Speaker 2: Madison create the Missouri in Montana, or it can be
- 36:41Speaker 2: one river joining another, such as where the Yellowstone meets
- 36:45Speaker 2: the Missouri in North Dakota. That is where their state
- 36:48Speaker 2: record paddlefish was snagged in twenty sixteen.
- 36:51Speaker 5: It eventually always comes back to paddlefish with Spencer.
- 36:54Speaker 2: That's right. You'll find that all right, here's a correct answer.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Review so far one was Hippo to Chronograph three, Nevada four,
- 37:03Speaker 2: Distemper five, Priest six, Rosemary seven, King of the Hill eight,
- 37:10Speaker 2: timber stand Improvement nine Confluents. Phil Let's give another scoreboard
- 37:15Speaker 2: update before question ten.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Here we are.
- 37:21Speaker 4: Seth and Brodie are still tied up in first place
- 37:23Speaker 4: with six but Nate and Iiannis can catch up. They
- 37:26Speaker 4: are right behind them with five points of it no, a.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Lot of ways we could go to a tiebreaker here.
