Transcript
- 0:00Hello, I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of the Scripture Central
- 0:03team to talk today about the book of Hebrews.
- 0:06It's my favorite epistle in the second-half of the New
- 0:09Testament. I love this book because it
- 0:12talks about the temple. The whole book of Hebrews is,
- 0:15generally speaking, the promise of the temple and the price of
- 0:19the temple. Now we'll divide it into many
- 0:21different sorts and and look at it in different ways, but this
- 0:25book is very unique amongst the Epistles.
- 0:27It's not the same as the others, chronologically.
- 0:31You can see on my chart here that Paul probably wrote it when
- 0:34he was in prison in Caesarea after his third mission.
- 0:37Before he is in prison in Rome, he spends 2 years in Caesarea.
- 0:42But we aren't positive. People often debate the
- 0:46authorship of this book, But Eusebius, our church historian
- 0:50who's writing from 260 AD to 339 AD, Eusebius said that the
- 0:55Epistle the Hebrews was written for Hebrews Meaning for Jews
- 0:59Jewish Conference in their own language, translated by Luke and
- 1:04published for Greek readers. Hence in the Greek version of
- 1:08this epistle, we find the same stylistic color as an Axe.
- 1:13Because remember, Luke wrote Axe and then he's Paul's companion
- 1:16and he supposedly translated this from Hebrew into Greek.
- 1:20Now it says his own tongue. Most Jews were not speaking
- 1:22Hebrew at this time, but because Paul was a scholar, he probably
- 1:25knew it. Most Jews were speaking Aramaic,
- 1:28the language of the Babylonians that they still have as their
- 1:31mother tongue. Here's another interesting
- 1:33statement on the book of Hebrews by my favorite Catholic scholar,
- 1:36Raymond Brown, in his introduction to the New
- 1:39Testament. By all standards, this is one of
- 1:42the most impressive works in the New Testament.
- 1:44It is written in quality Greek and passionately appreciative of
- 1:49Christ. Christ is the center of this
- 1:52Jesus as the Messiah and the whole book takes all these
- 1:55things about the Judaic traditions and the Law of Moses
- 1:58and says shows how the Savior is better than any of them.
- 2:03There's three or four reasons why I believe this book was
- 2:06written by Paul, or at least in some form of it was written by
- 2:09Paul because it may have been edited, it may have been
- 2:12changed, it may have been dictated and or given an
- 2:15outline. But the reason why I do is
- 2:17because he mentions Timothy. He mentions he's in bonds.
- 2:21He quotes the same LXX translations that the other
- 2:25letters of Paul does. And interestingly, he also
- 2:28quotes Habakkuk chapter 2 verse four, as he does in two other
- 2:31epistles. Most people don't have the book
- 2:33of Habakkuk memorized. They don't even have that
- 2:35scroll. Very few synagogues had scrolls
- 2:39beyond the Torah and the Psalms. And if you were a large city,
- 2:43you may have had the scroll of Isaiah, but the minor prophets
- 2:47were very hard to come by. And so if you had those
- 2:50memorized, you had probably been taught by one of the great
- 2:53masters in one of the great synagogues in Jerusalem.
- 2:57Another reason why I think Paul wrote this because he repeats
- 3:01this beloved scripture that he has memorized, and he's
- 3:04repeating it overward. You know, it's one of his
- 3:06favorite scriptures. We see it repeatedly.
- 3:08Another thing that's interesting about the book of Hebrews is
- 3:11that it fulfills the Law of Moses, just as Leviticus
- 3:16announced the Mosaic system. Remember, the Leviticus is the
- 3:19priesthood manual of the Old Testament.
- 3:21Hebrews explains it. I love this, and it's quite
- 3:25consistent actually with what Nephi also explains about the
- 3:28law of Moses in the book of Hebrews.
- 3:31It describes how the gospel is growing out of the context of
- 3:35the Levitical order, out of the temple ordinances and the
- 3:39Levitical soil. One of the our past BYU
- 3:42professors, Joseph F Mcconkey stated among the New Testament
- 3:46books, Romans is the most abused, Revelations is the most
- 3:50minister understood and Hebrews is the most neglected.
- 3:55So I hope to overcome that. I'm thrilled.
- 3:56We have two whole weeks on the book of Hebrews.
- 3:59It is the most Christ centered book among all of the Pauline
- 4:03epistles and I'm excited to dive into it with you.
- 4:06There's one more reason why I think this was written by Paul,
- 4:09and that has to do with statistical analysis of
- 4:12authorship. Do you remember The Federalist
- 4:15Papers were trying to be analyzed?
- 4:17Who actually wrote them? And when people try to say who
- 4:21wrote Shakespeare, And now when we go to courts of law, they're
- 4:23trying to determine is this text accurate or is it plagiarized?
- 4:28All of these now are done statistically through
- 4:31computerized studies A few decades ago.
- 4:34They used to call it word prints.
- 4:36But this whole idea of stylometry, this idea that the
- 4:39textual words are fit into contextual analysis, all of this
- 4:45very, very esoteric studies have been able to be shown even
- 4:50through translated works. And the stilometry of the book
- 4:53of Hebrews shows it to be Pauline.
- 4:56Let's dive in now with chapters one to three.
- 4:59They talk about the superiority of God's Son.
- 5:03The author is constantly comparing the Old Testament law
- 5:06with God's Son. The book of Hebrews does not
- 5:10start like Paul's other letters. Instead, chapter One, verse one
- 5:14through 4 is this beautiful resume of our Savior.
- 5:17He talks out with being an heir of all things.
- 5:20He made the world's He's the brightness of God's glory.
- 5:24He's the express image of God. He upholds all things.
- 5:29By the word of His power. He purged our sins, and he is so
- 5:36much better than the angels. So this beautiful resume sort of
- 5:40summarizes the Gospels. He's taking all the things we
- 5:43know about the resurrected Lord and putting them together in
- 5:46these first four verses. One other thing that is
- 5:49fascinating about the book of Hebrews is if he is writing to
- 5:53his own people, he's writing to people that understand the books
- 5:57that we refer to as the Old Testament.
- 5:59But they had more. It was not a small Canon like we
- 6:02have now for the Old Testament. It was much larger.
- 6:05We find so many citations from the Old Testament in Hebrews
- 6:09chapter one. Look at this, we have in verse
- 6:125, verse 6, verse 7, verse 9, verse 12, verse 13, He's quoting
- 6:16the Psalms and Samuel and Deuteronomy.
- 6:19And then in Hebrews chapter 2, verse 8, verse 12, verse 13, two
- 6:23times he quotes Isaiah and so Psalms.
- 6:25Hebrews chapter 3, we're quoting numbers in the Psalms.
- 6:28You know this book is saturated. This author really knew the law.
- 6:34He really knew the Old Testament writings.
- 6:37And I think Paul was one of the most educated and academically
- 6:42trained writers in the New Testament we had, and I think he
- 6:46knew them better than all the others.
- 6:47And hence we get a outpouring of scriptural connotations here.
- 6:52But let's start back in Hebrews chapter one, verse one through 2
- 6:56in the NIV. In the past God spoke to our
- 6:59ancestors through the prophets. But in these last days, meaning
- 7:03now meaning Paul's day, you know he's writing in the present
- 7:06tense. He has spoken to us by his Son.
- 7:11Verse 3. The sun is the radiance of the
- 7:14Father, the glory, the exact representation of his being.
- 7:19And this is an interesting word that was the NIV translation.
- 7:22But as we look into this in Greek, it says he is properly
- 7:26and the word first meant that he was engraving.
- 7:28You know, it's an image made by engraving tools, but
- 7:31figuratively it means he has the likeness, his inner character.
- 7:36Now if you look at other translations, this express image
- 7:40is translated as he is stamped, you know, as a photo, a
- 7:43photocopy. But I like the RSV.
- 7:45His nature is the exact same or in the CSV is like him in every
- 7:52way. So it's not necessarily saying
- 7:55they have to be a a photocopy, but they share the same things
- 8:01The Son and the Father share much.
- 8:03In verse six we have a Joseph Smith translation.
- 8:06So I'd like to read it to you that way Let all the angels of
- 8:09God worship him who maketh his ministerings as the flame of
- 8:14fire. And the angels, he said, Angels
- 8:17are ministering spirits. This is exactly what we believe
- 8:20in our dispensation, thanks to the JST changes.
- 8:23There verse 8:00 and 9:00 in the Neb translation read, But unto
- 8:27the sun he said, Thy throne, O God, is forever.
- 8:33And skipping down a little bit, it reads, Thou hast loved
- 8:36righteousness. And therefore God, even thy God,
- 8:40hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness.
- 8:43And skipping down to verse 9 above fellows by anointing with
- 8:48the oil of exaltation. And do you remember that the
- 8:52word Messiah, Mashiah is anointed, the anointed?
- 8:561 And that's also the word for Christ.
- 8:59And so he's saying above the angels, above the prophets.
- 9:03We have one who is anointed by God, and we believe that he is
- 9:09above the angels. He is above the prophets.
- 9:11And he's trying to show that in these beautiful verses that this
- 9:15anointing is of gladness. It's also significant, I think,
- 9:19as we think about the anointing, that Christ became the anointed
- 9:231 by going through His atoning sacrifice in Gethsemane and on
- 9:27the cross. And the word Gethsemane means
- 9:29the olive press, the place where they make that crushing heavy,
- 9:34heavy weights to make the oil, that first drop that comes out
- 9:38with the first pressing taken to the temple to use to anoint
- 9:43others to become holy. And all of them are just types
- 9:47of our Savior and we can become holy as we come unto Christ and
- 9:51are anointed to share His anointing.
- 9:54But He is the anointed. 1 Chapter 2 in Hebrews verse 1 to
- 9:599 all talks about the role of Christ in salvation.
- 10:03Now remember we talked about this in the Old Testament a
- 10:05couple years ago. The early children of Israel
- 10:09used the Temple and the focus on the sacrifice.
- 10:13The atoning sacrifice was their whole focus of their writing and
- 10:17their thoughts, and everything was focused on the Temple.
- 10:20But later Israelites, especially as they come back from the
- 10:24Babylonian exile, they are focused on the Law.
- 10:27The Law can save us, and if we can add to our law and live it
- 10:31entirely, we will not lose God's favor.
- 10:33So they added the Oral Laws, and they diminish the influence of
- 10:39the written 613 and emphasize the 10,000 extra traditions of
- 10:45the Jews. And so he's now trying to show
- 10:48that we're going back to the original, It's back to the
- 10:51Temple. And the Temple was only a sign,
- 10:55a pattern of our Savior. I'll read in verse one from the
- 10:59NIV of chapter two. We must pay the most careful
- 11:03attention, therefore, to what we have heard so that we do not
- 11:07drift away. And then he goes into verse 2 by
- 11:10saying, if you're not going to heed the don't go back to the
- 11:13Old Testament angels. You know you shouldn't give more
- 11:15attention to the Angel than you do to Christ.
- 11:17Christ is the Anointed One, and yet he's using that word for
- 11:20word play. Moving on to verse four, he says
- 11:23God hath also bearing them witnesses, both with signs and
- 11:27wonders and diverse miracles and gifts of the Holy Ghost
- 11:30according to his own will. Now I have to ask, what
- 11:35witnesses and wonders do you see of him?
- 11:38Paul asks the early Christians, Are you seeing God in your
- 11:42world? We read about him in the Old
- 11:44Testament. Do you see him now?
- 11:45And I think that's a wonderful question to ask ourselves as
- 11:48well. Chapter 2, verse eight and nine
- 11:50also refer to Christ's role. Quote.
- 11:53Thou has to put all things in subjection under thy feet.
- 11:57Remember, the word subjection is voluntary cooperation for the
- 12:01suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor that he by the
- 12:06grace of God, should taste death for every man.
- 12:10So our Savior's role is to taste death for every man He has died
- 12:15for all, so that as Isaiah said, O death, where is thy sting?
- 12:21There will be no end of life immortality.
- 12:24All will be able to receive the tree of life.
- 12:27All will be able to go back to the Garden of Eden and partake
- 12:30of the tree of life without our sins and live forever.
- 12:35And those who want to be exalted need to repent and come unto
- 12:37Christ. But every human will be able to
- 12:40live again. Chapter 2, verse 15 relieves
- 12:43that he will deliver them who through fear of death were
- 12:47subject to bondage. Now sometimes bondage is a fear.
- 12:51It can entrap us. We become paralyzed by fear.
- 12:55But he's asking us to remember that Christ, just step back,
- 12:59take a galactic view. All things are going to be made
- 13:03right and whole through our Savior. 1st 10 goes back to the
- 13:06suffering servant mentality of our Savior, it reads.
- 13:10For it became Him skipping down a little bit to make the captain
- 13:14of their salvation perfect through suffering.
- 13:18Now this is so fascinating. We don't ever seek suffering.
- 13:21We don't ask God for trials. He gives them to us.
- 13:25He tailor makes them and part of them are just part of life.
- 13:28But this is so significant that he had to suffer in order to
- 13:33become perfect. He had to bear the sins of all.
- 13:36He had to receive the the thrashings and the crucifixion.
- 13:40He had to go through this suffering in order to be
- 13:43perfected. He also became the great High
- 13:46Priest. This is chapter 2, verse 17.
- 13:49In all things it behaved him to be made like unto his brethren,
- 13:54that he might be merciful and faithful high priest to make
- 13:59reconciliation for the people of God.
- 14:02Now that word reconciliation is sometimes translated as
- 14:04propitiation, and it's for the sins of the people in the new
- 14:07King James version. But the high priest, remember
- 14:10once a year would offer the the day of atonement in the early
- 14:14fall the heifer and have the scapegoats and have the blood
- 14:19sprinkled on the altar and on the veil.
- 14:21And finally, after all the ritual that was involved in
- 14:24Leviticus chapter 16 would be allowed to enter into the Holy
- 14:29of Holies, enter into the throne of God and enter into the mercy
- 14:35seat. He's saying it wasn't the High
- 14:38priest. Christ is the great High priest.
- 14:40It was Christ blood that was represented this.
- 14:43It. It wasn't this one man doing
- 14:44things, it was representing our Savior.
- 14:48Verse 18 continues on with the suffering servant mentality and
- 14:51that he himself has suffered. Being tempted, he is able to
- 14:55succor them that are tempted. I am so grateful that we believe
- 14:59in a God who has descended before lo all things that he can
- 15:02always understand me. And then in chapter three he
- 15:06talks about Christ as an apostle as well as a high priest.
- 15:10This is interesting. We usually don't use the word
- 15:12apostle for our Savior, but he says in verse one of chapter 3,
- 15:16consider the apostle and high priest of our profession, Christ
- 15:20Jesus. And so we look at what does this
- 15:22mean by an apostle. Well, in Greek, which we
- 15:24mentioned before, Apostolos is 1 sent.
- 15:27It's a messenger, it's an envoy, A delegate 1 commissioned by
- 15:31another to represent him in some way.
- 15:34It's especially a man sent out by Jesus Christ to preach the
- 15:37gospel. All this comes from the strong's
- 15:39concordance. So Paul is using these beautiful
- 15:43temple imageries and these beautiful imageries from the
- 15:45gospel to say Christ. He is the high priest.
- 15:49Christ is the greatest apostle. But his Apostolic calling came
- 15:53from the Father and the others came from the Son.
- 15:56In verse three he talks about Jesus and Moses.
- 15:58He says chapter 3, verse three, this man he's referring to Jesus
- 16:02was counted worthy of more glory than Moses in as much as he who
- 16:06hath builded the house hath the more honor than the house.
- 16:10You know in the ancient world Moses was their greatest of all
- 16:13the prophets and he's saying no. Moses was directed by Jehovah
- 16:19and Jesus was Jehovah. It's beautiful image here.
- 16:23He that buildeth all things is God.
- 16:26That is Jehovah. That is Jesus in the flesh.
- 16:30That's verse four. In verse five he goes on and
- 16:32talks about this role of the apostle being a servant.
- 16:36And I want to remind you that the word servant is that we are
- 16:39waiting on God, and Moses was a servant.
- 16:42And as we wait on God we are not passive.
- 16:44We are actively meeting all of his needs.
- 16:47We're asking what would you like next, what would you like next,
- 16:49and what would you like for dessert?
- 16:51This is our role as servants of God.
- 16:54Verse six then goes on to the House of God, Christ as the Son
- 16:58over his own house. Whose house are we?
- 17:02So he's using the church as the house, as disciples.
- 17:05If we hold fast to the confidence and the rejoicing of
- 17:09the hope firm unto the faith, this is so important.
- 17:13We cannot serve God unless we honor Him with our faith.
- 17:17We have got to be receiving forgiveness in order to be
- 17:21cleansed by Him, and we can't work for Him unless we're
- 17:23cleansed. It's so important that we
- 17:25receive His atoning sacrifice in order to work for Him.
- 17:28But all can come unto Him and receive that grace.
- 17:31Continuing on in chapter 3, clear down to verse 12, and
- 17:35actually I'm going to do 12 all the way down to 17.
- 17:38He says take heed. And then skipping ahead, harden
- 17:42not your hearts and he goes back to this beautiful imagery as in
- 17:46the day of provocation with them that have sinned.
- 17:49OK, the day of provocation goes back to Moses when the children
- 17:52of Israel were brought out of Egypt to Mount Sinai.
- 17:55Remember, this is just a month or so out.
- 17:56It's 50 days out from Passover. They get back to Sinai and Moses
- 18:02says let's go back. Jesus has Jehovah asked them to
- 18:05bring the children visual back and have them ascend them out
- 18:08and enter into his presence. And he says they say no, Moses,
- 18:11you know, they built the golden calf.
- 18:13They they weren't ready for the higher law.
- 18:15Those were the days of provocation.
- 18:18They provoked God, and Paul is saying, we are back to this holy
- 18:22mountain. We are back to the days when
- 18:25Christ is asking us to enter again in His presence.
- 18:28He wants us to have the higher ordinances, the higher law, to
- 18:32once again receive of his greatest loves and his greatest
- 18:35gifts and let us not provoke him again.
- 18:40He continues on in the same verses of 17 to 19 with whom he
- 18:44was grieved 40 years because of unbelief.
- 18:49The clear statement here in Hebrews is that it was not
- 18:52necessary to walk in the wilderness 40 years.
- 18:55They had to walk for 40 years because they had provoked God.
- 18:58It was their punishment. It was to kill off that entire
- 19:01generation. So only the children were
- 19:03allowed to go into the promised land.
- 19:06Let us not spend years and years wandering in the wilderness.
- 19:10Let's come unto Christ and let's let's receive His higher law and
- 19:15honor our temple covenants, Chapter 4 says in the NIV verse
- 19:20one Since the promise of entering into His rest still
- 19:24stands, let us be careful that none of us have you be found to
- 19:29have fallen short of it. Well, what does entering into
- 19:32His rest mean? We are so blessed in the
- 19:35Restoration to have Joseph speak on this in many, many sections
- 19:40of the Doctrine Covenants. Actually, I shouldn't say Joseph
- 19:42speak on this. Joseph recorded divine
- 19:44revelation. One of those is section 84,
- 19:47verse 24, where it says the Lord's rest is the fullness of
- 19:51his glory. So he sang back in chapter 4,
- 19:53verse one, the promise of having God's full glory still stands.
- 19:59You know he's he's saying it's time to climb the mountain.
- 20:03It's time to enter into the higher law.
- 20:06The next three chapters are also filled with a lot of Old
- 20:09Testament citations. I gave you that huge list from
- 20:12the first three chapters. They're a little bit less here.
- 20:15He's got 3 Old Testament sections in chapter 4, two in
- 20:19chapter 5, and one in chapter 6, but they're again from Psalms
- 20:24and Genesis and Proverbs and verse 3-4 and seven and in
- 20:28chapter 4. Anyway, I've got them all in my
- 20:30hand on my notes. It's it's fascinating to see how
- 20:32well he knows his scriptures. Let's move on now to verses two
- 20:36and three. In chapter 4 there's a small
- 20:38Joseph Smith translation where he changes it.
- 20:41He says for unto us was the gospel preached.
- 20:45Joseph changes that he says for unto us was rest preached.
- 20:49Now this is very interesting to see Joseph already using this
- 20:53definition for the rest of the Lord in 1832 when he's making
- 20:58these changes. But he has received a section 84
- 21:01shortly after this and he's and he's already understanding what
- 21:06the rest of the Lord meant. So he's saying God is trying to
- 21:10have you enter into His presence.
- 21:12That's what the Joseph Smith translation change means, And
- 21:15continuing on in verse 3 for we who have believed to enter into
- 21:20rest, that is a powerful verse. Then in verse four we have
- 21:25another Joseph Smith translation.
- 21:26He says in this place again and he's quoting Psalms 95, verse 11
- 21:31and seven and eight. He says in this place again is
- 21:33the book of Psalms. If they and then Joe Smith adds
- 21:37in the Joseph Smith translation harden not their hearts, they
- 21:41shall enter into my rest. Joseph is always clear to say.
- 21:45It's not a passive gift. It's not.
- 21:47You're either elect or you're damned as Augustine and Calvin
- 21:51taught and which was part of the Puritan translation of the King
- 21:55James Version of the Bible. It is only those who have soft
- 22:01and meek and humble hearts who come unto Christ.
- 22:03Continuing on in chapter 4 verse eight in the NIV.
- 22:06And the reason why I want to use the NIV is because the King
- 22:08James says Jesus. But remember Jesus is Joshua
- 22:12Joshua in Greek. So the NIV translation says for
- 22:15if Joshua had given them rest, God would have spoken later
- 22:20about another day. So he's going through the Old
- 22:23Testament scripture saying we know there's another one because
- 22:26it was promised. Paul's also using the Jewish
- 22:29argument the way that they disgusting the way that they
- 22:31would go and debate their scriptures.
- 22:34He's using the same techniques that he had learned as a
- 22:37Pharisee in the synagogue here in this letter.
- 22:40Moving on now to verse 10 of chapter 4 and the BSB at C
- 22:44reads, whoever enters God's rest also rests from his own work,
- 22:49just as God did. This is so powerful we have to
- 22:53completely submit our will to God's will.
- 22:57But I also want to add a different dimension to this
- 22:59verse. We are told that the Sabbath is
- 23:01to be a day of rest, but once you start getting a church
- 23:04calling, it's hardly a day of rest, especially if you're
- 23:07you're the primary president or something.
- 23:09You know it's going to take a full day of preparation and
- 23:12service if you're the Bishop or something.
- 23:14It is not a day of quiet nap time.
- 23:17So what we can do to add this definition of rest.
- 23:22Rest is entering into the presence of the Lord.
- 23:24It's receiving of the Lord's fullness, it's doing His will.
- 23:28So if our Sabbaths are a day of rest, our Sabbaths are entering
- 23:33into God's presence, our Sabbaths are doing His will, our
- 23:36Sabbaths are serving him. So instead of saying is this
- 23:40something I should be doing on the Sabbath or not, ask is this
- 23:43God's work? And if it's not God's work,
- 23:46don't do it. The Sabbath is a day where we
- 23:49don't do our own will. It's a day we do the Lord's will
- 23:52according to the Restorations definition of this verse here in
- 23:58chapter 4, verse 10, Verse 11 continues on.
- 24:01Let us labor, therefore, to enter into that rest, you know,
- 24:06whether you're a missionary, whether you're a child learning
- 24:09to pray, whether you're going to the temple, whether you're
- 24:11serving someone else. Let us serve God at all times in
- 24:15all places. No matter if we're having to
- 24:17earn our money another way or get our education another way,
- 24:20we can serve God with everything we say and do.
- 24:23He goes back to the idea of Jesus as the great High Priest
- 24:25in Hebrews chapter 4, verse 14 all the way to Hebrews chapter
- 24:295, verse 10. And he goes on with the idea of
- 24:32this great sacrifice because it was the high Priest who took the
- 24:35sins of the children of Israel upon him, offers them on the
- 24:38altar, sprinkles the blood, and is allowed to then represent the
- 24:44the promised Messiah in the future.
- 24:46He's a type of that, a precursor.
- 24:49It says in the NIV verse 14. Since we have a great high
- 24:53priest who has ascended into the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God,
- 24:58let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
- 25:02And then skipping down to verse 16 again in the NIV.
- 25:05Let us then approach God's throne, the of grace and
- 25:09confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to
- 25:13help us in our time of need. This is such a powerful message,
- 25:18you know, Come to Christ, return to him.
- 25:21Repent not just every day, but every time we need to turn
- 25:24around, every time we get self-centered or selfish return
- 25:27to Christ. He has made a sacrifice for us.
- 25:32He has already done it. Please apply his atoning
- 25:35sacrifice in your life through repentance, Verse 15 in the NIV
- 25:39reads. For we do not have a high priest
- 25:42who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one
- 25:47who has been tempted in every way just as we are.
- 25:51Yet he did not sin. That is powerful.
- 25:56And chapter 5 continues on with this High priest theme.
- 25:58I'll read verse one from the BSB.
- 26:00Every high priest is appointed from among men to represent them
- 26:05in matters relating to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for
- 26:10sins. This is powerful.
- 26:14And this early Christian artwork that I have on my slide shows
- 26:18God's hand coming down through the heavens to an altar where
- 26:22Melchizedek and Abel are offering sacrifice.
- 26:25It's all temple, temple, Temple. This is a temple text.
- 26:30How do we enter the temple and what is required?
- 26:34Read the book of Hebrews with that in mind.
- 26:36Chapter 5, verse four. No one takes this honor upon
- 26:40himself unless he must be called by God, as Aaron was.
- 26:45You know, this is used often in the Restoration, that when we
- 26:48receive God's power and authority in our lives, it's not
- 26:51because we've gone to school. It's not because we get
- 26:54authority from the Bible. It's not even because we get
- 26:56authority from Peter. It is because we get authority
- 27:00from Christ. The keys are passed down through
- 27:04God's anointed ones. Continuing on in verse four it
- 27:08reads, Christ did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a
- 27:12high priest, but he was called by the one who said.
- 27:17And then in verse 7 through 9 I'll read in the BSB.
- 27:20During the days of Jesus earthly life he offered up prayers and
- 27:25petitions with loud cries and tears to one who could save him
- 27:29from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
- 27:34He was a son and he learned obedience from what he suffered
- 27:39having been made perfect, and he's repeating this from his
- 27:42earlier times. This message is consistent
- 27:45throughout the Pauline epistles. That's another reason why I see
- 27:48this is Paul. We see the same themes there
- 27:50that we saw back in the pastoral epistles.
- 27:53Continuing on to chapter 5, verse nine, in the NIV, he
- 27:56became the source of eternal salvation and all who obey him.
- 28:01He not only died for us, but He lives for us and he was
- 28:05resurrected for us. Verse 12.
- 28:08By this time you ought to be teachers and you need someone to
- 28:13teach you. I'm reading from the NIV this
- 28:15Elementary truths of the gospel. This word again.
- 28:18You need milk, not solid food. I love this analogy, he says.
- 28:22I want to teach you with meat. And yet you are still back, like
- 28:27a babe needing milk from your mother.
- 28:29You should be the ones who are teaching the gospel.
- 28:31You're the ones who had the law of Moses before.
- 28:33You're the Jewish converts. Why aren't you ready for the
- 28:36meat of the gospel? But it's the real word is solid
- 28:40food. You know, he's just using this
- 28:41analogy of a nursing baby and a child who grows up.
- 28:45He's saying Saints come, I I want you to receive more.
- 28:49Chapter 6, verse one has an important Joseph Smith
- 28:51translation change. It says therefore not leaving
- 28:55the principles of the doctrine in Christ.
- 28:56Let us go on to perfection. So without it, he's saying, I've
- 29:00already talked about faith and who Christ is.
- 29:02Now I want to talk about how you can receive, how you can receive
- 29:07His perfecting grace. And he's saying, I would now
- 29:10want you to give give you the temple promises, the promises of
- 29:13living with God again, of being like the High Priest, being
- 29:17washed and anointed and clothed, and then going into the holy
- 29:21place and and partaking of these sacred ordinances so that you
- 29:25can go to the veil which represents Christ.
- 29:28We'll learn about that in Chapter 9 next week and enter
- 29:30into His presence, moving on now to Chapter 6, verse four in the
- 29:34JST, he adds. For he hath made it impossible,
- 29:40and then going back to King James, for those who were once
- 29:43enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made
- 29:46partakers of the Holy Ghost. Moving on to verse six.
- 29:50If they should fall away, Joseph Smith adds here to be renewed
- 29:55again unto repentance. They're unable to repent.
- 29:58They've fallen. The King James again says,
- 30:01seeing that they crucify unto themselves the Son of God afresh
- 30:05and put him to an open shame, then finishing up with verse
- 30:08nine in the KJV. But beloved, we are persuaded
- 30:12better things of you, the things that accompany salvation.
- 30:16He is referring in these few verses to those who have who are
- 30:21sons of perdition. Very few people fall into that
- 30:24category. He's saying I think more of you,
- 30:28you are going to survive. But that verse 6 area, you know
- 30:32the King James sounds as if once you've fallen you can't repent.
- 30:36And the Joseph Smith translation trains to change that.
- 30:39And then Joseph spoke on this as we discussed earlier that there
- 30:42are very few who have actually had their ordinances and and do
- 30:46this I'll just cite again from the discourse of April 7th,
- 30:491844. So general conference, we
- 30:51usually refer to this as the King fall.
- 30:52It's discourse. Joseph said All sins shall be
- 30:56forgiven except the sin against the Holy Ghost.
- 31:00And after a man has sinned against the Holy Ghost, there is
- 31:04no repentance for him. He has got to say that the sun
- 31:08does not shine while he sees it. He has got to deny Jesus Christ
- 31:13when the heavens were open to him, meaning he has seen the
- 31:17Lord. He has received higher
- 31:19ordinances that would seal his calling election permanently.
- 31:24That's who Joseph defines there. Moving now to chapter 6, verse
- 31:2819, in the NIV we have this hope as an anchor of our soul, firm
- 31:34and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary
- 31:36behind the curtain. So what's the inner sanctuary
- 31:39behind the curtain? He's talking about the temple.
- 31:42Go back to the Old Testament temple.
- 31:43The curtain is the veil. It's between the holy place and
- 31:47the holiest place or the Holy of holies.
- 31:50That curtain is the veil now. It was a curtain during called
- 31:54Day and Age, but in Solomon's temple it was made out of wood.
- 31:57It separated the two with a sliding, sliding wood doors.
- 32:00But he's saying, I want you to enter into that sanctuary.
- 32:04I want you to go through the veil and enter into the presence
- 32:08of the Lord. And he's begging the Saints, he
- 32:10said. I want this to be your anchor.
- 32:12I want this to be a firm assurance.
- 32:14Go through the veil and see the Lord and continue to live and
- 32:20hold on to your covenants, because your covenants are to
- 32:22bring you to Christ. It's the covenant path, is the
- 32:26path to Christ. It's the way back to entering
- 32:28into His presence. Verse 20, continuing on in the
- 32:31NIV, our forerunner Jesus has entered on our behalf.
- 32:36He's entered through the veil. He has become a high priest
- 32:40forever in the order of Melchizedek.
- 32:43Now remember back in the Old Testament we only have a couple
- 32:46of verses on Melchizedek. We have a lot more in the Joseph
- 32:49Smith translation of Genesis chapter 14.
- 32:52I think it is. But in the book of Hebrews we
- 32:55have even more the place you want to learn about Melchizedek.
- 32:58And remember as I talked about in the Old Testament,
- 33:00Melchizedek is 2 Hebrew words together King of righteousness.
- 33:05It may be a title. And remember he was the king of
- 33:09Salem, the King of Peace. So he has these titles that we
- 33:13use. Remember there's no vowels.
- 33:15It's MLK Malek. It's all over the Old Testament.
- 33:18MLK means king in Hebrew and in English if you know who MLK is.
- 33:23And so you have to wait till next week when we got to talk
- 33:26more about Melchizedek and who he is and how that typifies of
- 33:29Christ. But remember, at Christ passing
- 33:32the veil of the temple was rent. And as we go back to the Gospels
- 33:36and look at that, many people have seen that symbolically, as
- 33:40the entrance from the Holy Place into the Holy of Holies is now
- 33:44open, the ability now to enter into the presence of God is
- 33:47actually there. But you can also look at it
- 33:50according to the book of Hebrews, that our forerunner has
- 33:53entered into our behalf. It is Jesus who has gone back to
- 33:58the Father without sins. He has made the way.
- 34:02The way is the way back to the tree of life, the way back to
- 34:06enter into the presence of God, the way through the ancient
- 34:11temple with our washings and our anointings and our clothing.
- 34:15The High Priest, then offering sacrifices and praying at the
- 34:19altar, is able to partake of the fruit and enter it.
- 34:22It's just a beautiful, archaeological, symbolic,
- 34:27symbolic walk back to the presence of the Lord as we look
- 34:31at the ancient world. And this letter is written to
- 34:33those who understood that priestly walk, that walk of the
- 34:38priesthood to go back into the presence of the Lord.
- 34:41And I tie it to the Lord's death as well.
- 34:43I hope that you'll continue on in your book study of Hebrews
- 34:47and if you can, go to the temple this week and see how the book
- 34:51of Hebrews ties in to our teachings on the promise of the
- 34:55temple and the price of the temple in the name of Jesus
- 34:59Christ, Amen.
