- 0:00Ezra felt that intermarriage threatened the Israelite
- 0:03covenant. He said it was the holy seed
- 0:05should not have been mingled. These daughters are
- 0:08demonstrating they want to build Jerusalem again to fulfill God's
- 0:13promises to this community. The real problem is idol
- 0:17worship. To solve this problem, Ezra
- 0:19commanded the men to divorce all their foreign wives.
- 0:23The scripture say they wept very sore that the children spoke
- 0:27their mothers languages, not Hebrew.
- 0:30Nehemiah responds with absolute fury.
- 0:33He physically confronts these men for marrying out of the
- 0:36covenant and he makes them swear to create no more marriages with
- 0:40foreigners. And he calls on people again to
- 0:43have divorces. When her marriage was arranged
- 0:46with a priest, the priest did something very unusual.
- 0:51He chose to keep the family. Hello.
- 0:59Welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 1:00I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of the team that wants to build
- 1:04enduring faith in Jesus Christ. As we look at the Old Testament,
- 1:07and today we're in Ezra and Nehemiah, I want to look
- 1:10specifically at the handmaidens and the harems and the heroines.
- 1:14Actually, I don't know how many of those we have.
- 1:15We do have a lot of handmaidens. We have a lot of female
- 1:18servants. We've got, we got a lot of
- 1:20daughters, we got 1 queen and we have unfortunately one false
- 1:24prophet, prophetess. But originally Ezra and Nehemiah
- 1:29were one book. You know, it was divided into 3
- 1:32portions. The rebuilding of the temple in
- 1:34Jerusalem, a religious community being developed and purified,
- 1:38and then the building of the walls in Jerusalem from
- 1:41Nehemiah. And now that's all together in
- 1:45one book of Ezra and one book of Nehemiah.
- 1:48But just as a little bit of background, just to remember
- 1:51where we are, the Babylonian Empire comes in from all the way
- 1:56from about 626 BC to 539 BC. And even though these books are
- 2:03not written by prophets, they're written by scribes and
- 2:06governors. We did have prophets at this
- 2:08time. We've got Jeremiah and Daniel
- 2:10and Habakkuk and Lehigh from this time buried in Jerusalem
- 2:14and Ezekiel right after. And I've got a nice little graph
- 2:18here on my slides as well as in my handout to describe there was
- 2:21the first captivity in six O 5. That's when Daniel was taken in
- 2:25the wealthy. Then there was another group
- 2:28taken from Jerusalem to that's the second captivity.
- 2:32That's when Ezekiel was taken in 597.
- 2:36But the entire temple, Solomon's temple was destroyed in 586.
- 2:42And so the majority of the people that were living in the
- 2:45southern tribes at that time, we're all called Jews, even
- 2:48though there are many tribes are living in Babylon on the ur of
- 2:52Chaldees in Mesopotamia. But Babylon falls to Cyprus, the
- 2:56Persian in 539. And Cyprus is just within a few
- 3:02years is told that you have been prophesied to help us return to
- 3:07our people. Well, he's very thrilled and
- 3:10allows them to go with great pageantry and the first group of
- 3:14exiles return. That's where we're starting.
- 3:17And that's under Zahra Babel's Zerabable leadership.
- 3:21And he is to rebuild the temple. And then about 70 years, almost
- 3:27100 years later, we get Ezra and Nehemiah.
- 3:30And by the time Nehemiah and the walls are finished, it's been
- 3:32100 years period of time from the first returning exiles to
- 3:37the time that the wall is finished under Darius the
- 3:39second. Babylon has a lot of records and
- 3:43so we can go back and date things and get exact dates of
- 3:46when certain people were ruling. We even have some of the
- 3:50archaeology still. Europeans came in and took down
- 3:54the beautiful blue tile ceramic walls of Babylon and they are
- 3:58now available to be seen in the Berlin Museum.
- 4:02They are absolutely gorgeous and you can see them online.
- 4:05You don't need to go to Berlin and get a feel for who they
- 4:09worshipped and what they were worshipped and the, and the high
- 4:12level of civilization and artistry at this time.
- 4:15The first Persian Empire is founded by a Cyrus the Great and
- 4:20he begins this dynasty that goes from about 550 all the way down
- 4:25to 330 BC. And he it, it's included in the
- 4:29Medes. And sometimes the Bible talks
- 4:32about them separately and sometimes together, but
- 4:35historically they, they tended to overlap.
- 4:37But this Cyrus allows the Jews to return to Jerusalem and
- 4:42rebuild their temple. And as I mentioned, just a
- 4:44couple of years after he's put in power.
- 4:47So at about 5:38 to 5:37, they begin gathering and many Jews
- 4:53choose to go back. He opens up the temple treasury.
- 4:56He gets all the things that the his predecessors had stolen or
- 5:01taken from I I think stolen's appropriate from the temple, the
- 5:05gold and the and the different instruments that were used
- 5:09inside. And Cyrus gives them back to
- 5:11this group of returning Jews. Now there are three periods
- 5:15where the Jews actually leave the Babylonian area or the UR of
- 5:19Chaldees and go back to the Promised Land.
- 5:22But this first one is the largest, but it's still only
- 5:2642,000. Well, the numbers are actually
- 5:29counted exactly. When the remnant returns, we
- 5:32have 42,360 3 Israelites. These are males and females and
- 5:38children. And then they have 737 servants
- 5:42and singers. You know, they're exactly
- 5:45numbered. They know who went.
- 5:47And now we're not told in the scripture if this servants and
- 5:52the singers had a right to choose to accompany their
- 5:55masters or if they just all came as part of the household.
- 5:57I assume studying a little bit about servitude and slavery at
- 6:01this time that everyone was required to go if your master
- 6:04was going. But however they got there,
- 6:07these officials counted each returning refugee, male and
- 6:11female, and they counted more than the people.
- 6:15So if you count up the servants and these free men and women,
- 6:18you've got about 50,000. And then they list 736 horses,
- 6:22245 mules, 435 camels, and the animal of choice, 6720 donkeys.
- 6:34You've got an enormous amount of of animals to accompany and help
- 6:38carry all these things for these almost 50,000 people.
- 6:43The people that returned, I was very interested to see how
- 6:48carefully they named and numbered the servants that were
- 6:51returning to Judah. The female maids were among
- 6:55these, of course. And it let me know that the
- 6:59social class all needed to work together to rebuild this temple
- 7:03and city. It wasn't going to work if you
- 7:05just brought back the elites. You needed those who are going
- 7:08to help in the kitchens and in the lifting the rocks and the
- 7:12stones and and with the children.
- 7:14And so these female servants likely perform very important
- 7:17duties, you know, in addition to just a number.
- 7:20They came because they were needed, and their return to this
- 7:24devastated homeland, even though they lived a much more
- 7:28comfortable life in Babylon, required an enormous sacrifice
- 7:32by the time they got to Jerusalem.
- 7:34And as I thought about the British Saints coming to Utah
- 7:38and being sent out in the desert, you know, it was a
- 7:41horrendous sacrifice for them. I feel the same about this.
- 7:45You know, they've been in captivity about 70 years.
- 7:47They want to go back and fulfill God's purposes.
- 7:50They want to fulfill God's covenant, but it is hard work.
- 7:57I've got one more graph that's very helpful.
- 7:59These three groups of return from the exile, the first one
- 8:03after the 70 years of captivity, is Zerubbabold's responsibility
- 8:08to rebuild the temple. And we've got at least two
- 8:11prophets during this time, the prophecies of Hagia and
- 8:15Zechariah. And we'll get into those when we
- 8:18get to the prophets. But then there's about a 60 year
- 8:21gap before we have the next group under Ezra.
- 8:26Oh I should have also remembered that Joshua was the high priest.
- 8:31So Zerubbabel was in charge of building the temple, but the
- 8:33high priest was in charge of running the temple.
- 8:36So this this group of 50,000 returnees.
- 8:39Now, if you count how many people were taken, this is just
- 8:42a small portion. Some people have estimated only
- 8:446% of the Levites returned and they're the ones that we
- 8:49numbered the most carefully. So very few considering the
- 8:54overall picture. Many chose to stay and live in
- 8:58Babylon. And the next group that came out
- 9:01was a very small group with Ezra.
- 9:03We're told that number in the scriptures, it's 1000, 1/2 I
- 9:06think, and then there's a 12 year gap.
- 9:09And then Nehemiah is called as the governor to rebuild the
- 9:12wall. And then Nehemiah goes back and
- 9:14forth and on his second return we have the prophet Malachi
- 9:19prophesying. Then we've got about 400 years
- 9:22without prophecy in the scriptures of the Christian
- 9:26Bible. Now the Jews claim a lot of that
- 9:29intertestamental period as wise people giving wise counsel, and
- 9:35they're in the Apocrypha and they are listed in things like
- 9:40the Maccabees and Judith and then Sera, and some of them
- 9:47claim to have wisdom, but nobody claims to be a prophet during
- 9:51that time. Among these 50,000 that are
- 9:53returning, a family is described that I'm very interested in.
- 9:57It's both in Ezra and Nehemiah, which tells you that they're
- 10:00very important to the text, and it also tells us what the author
- 10:06wants to emphasize. The fact that he is including
- 10:08this extremely unfortunate family is is pointing to what
- 10:14the authors are trying to say. So I'd like you just to pause
- 10:17and look a little closer at Ezra chapter 2, verse 61 and Nehemiah
- 10:23Chapter 7 verse 63. They talk about generations
- 10:27before a wonderful woman from the family of Barzilia, who is a
- 10:33Gileadite, and they came from the very wealthy, honored
- 10:37family. They were very loyal supporters
- 10:39of King David. And when her marriage was
- 10:42arranged with a priest, the priest did something very
- 10:47unusual. He chose to keep the family name
- 10:51of his wife instead of his own priestly name.
- 10:56So generations later, they're now back, they're coming to
- 10:59Israel and they want to help in the rebuilding of the temple.
- 11:03However, it causes serious problems because they don't have
- 11:07a record that he came from the priestly family that was allowed
- 11:11to work on the temple proper. Things like the the the
- 11:15sanctuary, that altar has to be worked on only by the priest.
- 11:19Well, these authorities excluded him from temple service and he
- 11:24has to completely abandoned his priestly genealogy because they
- 11:29don't acknowledge with his name changed.
- 11:32This tells you what they're trying to emphasize in these
- 11:36chapters. Even though this is at the early
- 11:38part of Ezra, we will hear later on in both of these books an
- 11:42attack against anyone who is not blue blood.
- 11:47It's rather interesting in conjunction with the book of
- 11:49Esther right next door where a woman is allowed to marry out of
- 11:53the covenant. And but this, this isn't even
- 11:55out of the covenant. It's just marrying the ironic
- 11:57and a Judaic tribe and which happens all the time.
- 12:01That isn't a problem. I mean, just look at Solomon.
- 12:03There's plenty of them with Solomon.
- 12:05But this one is interesting because it suggests the
- 12:08priesthood line was not done by genealogy but by name.
- 12:12And I realized that many people were illiterate at this time.
- 12:15It was very difficult. Anyway, interesting story, Very
- 12:20sad story that's included there. Another group that came back are
- 12:23these singers. Now, do you remember Claire back
- 12:25with Moses, Sister Miriam? And we talked about all the
- 12:30women who are using the tambourine and singing and
- 12:33dancing. And we've seen lots of female
- 12:35singers ever since we began reading from Miriam on down.
- 12:39But these singing women were considered important enough that
- 12:42they that the officials specifically counted them in
- 12:45their census and mentioned them as the female singers and the
- 12:50male singers restoring proper worship to Jerusalem that
- 12:54required it was skilled musical instruments.
- 12:57And these men and women who have been chosen to help are
- 13:02performing at the temple ceremonies, at the festivals, at
- 13:06the community gatherings. They're providing worship that
- 13:10has been in the past was part of Israel real service.
- 13:13I don't know while they were in exile if they were able to
- 13:16continue this, but their willingness to leave Babylon and
- 13:20return to this devastated homeland really demonstrates
- 13:24their dedication to re establishing the authentic
- 13:27worship in Jerusalem. I think it's it's wonderful,
- 13:30especially since I'm a musician and rather favor musicians
- 13:34myself. This is an exciting part of the
- 13:37story for me. But as we move forward after the
- 13:39period of Zerubbabel on to the building of the wall, twice in
- 13:44our account, Ezra 9 and Nehemiah 10 and 13, we hear about these
- 13:50daughters of Judah. So these Israelites, remember,
- 13:53you're called from Judah sometimes even if you're from
- 13:55other tribes who are marrying foreign sons and vice versa.
- 14:02Some foreign daughters are marrying sons of Judah, but the
- 14:05bottom line is they are marrying across the covenant.
- 14:09And so we've now been there for for decades.
- 14:13But between this Babylonian exile and the return to Judah,
- 14:16these these Israelite tribes have been engaged in interfaith
- 14:20marriages, which is causing a lot of problems from a modern
- 14:25perspective. Looking at this, I want to step
- 14:27back and say, but the Jewish daughters had very little choice
- 14:31in the selection of their spouse.
- 14:33You know, they can't divorce. They can't choose.
- 14:36Everything's arranged for them when they're very, very young,
- 14:39from birth until age 12 1/2. But Ezra discovers that among
- 14:44these interfaith marriages, some of the people who are doing this
- 14:48are ironic priesthood holders. And he gets furious.
- 14:51The priesthood lineage has got to remain pure.
- 14:54Their concern was not ethnic. It's religious.
- 14:58It's purity in the temple, but he goes beyond that.
- 15:03I think they go to an extreme that from my history, my
- 15:07perspective is a little concerning, but I want to walk
- 15:11in their shoes and look at from their perspective.
- 15:14And what Nehemiah and Ezra are concerned about in their records
- 15:18is that there is idolatry coming in.
- 15:21The real problem is idol worship.
- 15:23And so to solve this problem, Ezra 9.
- 15:26This is this is crazy. And verse 2, he speaks out
- 15:30instead of asking them to be converted and doing missionary
- 15:34work. And instead of these great
- 15:36examples we had in the past of Rahab, and then even David's
- 15:40grandmother Ruth marries Boaz and they're both converted
- 15:43strong women. Instead of those two examples,
- 15:46Ezra felt that intermarriage threatened to the Israelite
- 15:50covenant and he said it was the holy seed should not have been
- 15:54mingled with unholy. And so Ezra commanded the men to
- 16:00divorce all their foreign wives. Now as I mentioned, this seems
- 16:05harsh, especially in Babylon when a Jewish maid is about to
- 16:11marry the king. You know, this is this is the
- 16:14same time period of of Esther that we'll talk about it next
- 16:17week. But to save her people, she does
- 16:21this, or the Lord opens a doorway for her to do this.
- 16:24But it's interesting that in Jerusalem, they're living it one
- 16:27way, and it's interpreted completely different in Babylon.
- 16:31So the crisis demonstrates to me that the marriage covenant
- 16:36requires faith on both sides, but it can be enacted
- 16:40differently at different times under different leadership.
- 16:42But I just want to remind you that Ezra and Nehemiah are not
- 16:45prophets. They are scribes.
- 16:48They are what we would call an attorney or something.
- 16:51They are governors. You know, that's it's a very
- 16:53different situation here. Who's leading the show?
- 16:57But God has given the commandment to preserve family
- 17:01and the national spiritual identity.
- 17:03So I appreciate that they're probably doing the best they
- 17:06know how to do at the time. Moving forward now to Ezra 10,
- 17:10these women are part of a massive congregation that
- 17:13gathers at Jerusalem. Ezra wants to publicly mourn
- 17:18about the loss of this covenant purity and this inner marriage
- 17:22between the Israelites and idol worshippers.
- 17:24And so the women are there and active participants.
- 17:28The women at this moment are part of a national repentance.
- 17:33They're showing that they are included in the religious
- 17:36gathering. They they they care about the
- 17:39covenant and the covenant violations and the the scripture
- 17:43say they wept very sore. This is really wonderful that we
- 17:48see this. I think the people are weeping
- 17:51are the people who are going to be kicked out of the families,
- 17:54but they may be weeping further senses.
- 17:55But the fact that these quote UN quote required divorces would
- 18:01separate innocent children and parents is is tragic.
- 18:05But the fact that the text wants to say that the men and women
- 18:09are all making this vow together is is powerful.
- 18:14Now, Ezra aimed for accountability for the entire
- 18:17community. And that's why, of course, the
- 18:19women have to share not only emotionally in, but in the
- 18:22spiritual loss to this nature nation.
- 18:26So they're going to go through a repentance the best they know
- 18:28how. And in his mind, it is requiring
- 18:31divorce. I think he's out of line.
- 18:33When we get to the book of Nehemiah in chapter 2, there's
- 18:37another woman, the queen of our taxes.
- 18:40This is now the Persian queen. She's unnamed, but it says that
- 18:45she is sitting right there next to her husband.
- 18:49And when Nehemiah is requesting permission to return with
- 18:52another group of Israelites or Jews to Jerusalem to rebuild its
- 18:56walls. And I think this is interesting
- 18:58that her presence is specifically noted during this
- 19:01important political decision. You know, I think it might
- 19:04suggest that either she had influence in the King's court,
- 19:07that Nehemiah wanted to say both king and queen were united in
- 19:13carrying this out because the the Persian queen sometimes held
- 19:17considerable power. It's a little bit different than
- 19:19it is in other countries, but they could sway royal decisions.
- 19:23And we even know who this queen was.
- 19:26If it were the right king, then it's Queen Damaspia, so he gets
- 19:31permission. The third group gets to return
- 19:34back. It's not very many a number, but
- 19:37we're told that one of the people who has an important role
- 19:41here is a man named Shalom and his daughters are working
- 19:46alongside their father to repair this wall.
- 19:49This is very unusual. They're the only women we've
- 19:52ever heard of in the text or this 100 years of trying to
- 19:55rebuild. A lot of women are there.
- 19:57A lot of women are helping, but we are not told that they're
- 20:01doing the this job. Now.
- 20:03It's interesting because this Shalom, it was a ruler over half
- 20:08of Jerusalem, which makes his daughters, I think, a woman of
- 20:12status. But we don't know if they're
- 20:16physically lifting the stones and helping in this
- 20:18reconstruction, or he just doesn't have sons.
- 20:21And he says no, these daughters are running the show.
- 20:23They're directing it. They're they're helping in many
- 20:25ways. Now to rebuild a Stonewall is
- 20:28going to be extremely physically difficult, even with donkeys and
- 20:33horses helping you. But these daughters most likely
- 20:37were committed to the project, not just because of their dad's
- 20:42position, because they wanted to help restore Jerusalem.
- 20:47You know, we don't know about the family dynamics, but as the
- 20:50text mentions this, I assume that these daughters are
- 20:54demonstrating and transcending just physical labor, that they
- 21:00want to build Jerusalem again to fulfill God's promises to this
- 21:05community. I I think it's pretty exciting
- 21:08and moving on into Nehemiah. By chapter 4, we get some other
- 21:12information that these Israelite wives and daughters faced severe
- 21:17economic oppression after leaving Babylon and coming back
- 21:20to Jerusalem. During the time that walls are
- 21:23being constructed, there's a lot of attacks against Jerusalem.
- 21:26These women are hungry. They're not able to even provide
- 21:30enough food for their families because the men are busy
- 21:33working. And there's a very sparse
- 21:36farmland and the water sources, you know, that's just a few of
- 21:39them. And even though it's been
- 21:42decades and decades, they still are being exploited.
- 21:45And in fact, it says the Jewish nobles are exploiting the poor.
- 21:50They're they're causing them to be sell their daughters into
- 21:53slavery. So we talked about these
- 21:56horrific situations where the families are selling their wives
- 22:00and their daughters into slavery.
- 22:02So Nehemiah rallies his men to fight for their daughters and
- 22:07wives, and he places the women and children as his primary
- 22:10motive to get these men moving to action.
- 22:14He uses the phrase some of our daughters are brought into
- 22:18bondage already. That's Nehemiah 55.
- 22:22And so he wants to, you know, make this an immediate crisis.
- 22:26These girls have already been sold into servitude, which means
- 22:29probably they are sold into either prostitution or as a
- 22:33concubine or just in in slave labor or, or servitude in a
- 22:38house. I don't know.
- 22:40But he is worried that they are facing exploitation and probably
- 22:44abuse. So Nehemiah, just like Captain
- 22:48Moroni says, let's fight for our women and our children, our
- 22:53wives and our daughters. And he commands these wealthy
- 22:57people to stop charging interest and return the confiscated
- 23:01property and stop abusing the daughters of Judah and the
- 23:06daughters of Israel who have been who are being sold into
- 23:08slavery to these foreigners nations.
- 23:11He also called for a unified community to protect the
- 23:14economic injustices that are coming there.
- 23:17Some of these people who are fighting against Israel at this
- 23:20time include a false prophetess. Her name is no idea and most of
- 23:26our prophetesses in the Old Testament are good women, but
- 23:29she is part of a team that are trying to oppose the Israelite
- 23:35return from Babylon. And you remember the Israelites
- 23:39when the Samaritans came down, they said we want nothing to do
- 23:42with you, stay away. And so these groups that they
- 23:45said stay away from us, this is our land have now gathered other
- 23:51locals around and we are having there's almost as many people
- 23:54guarding as we are building. And then it gets to the point
- 23:57where there's more people guarding than building.
- 23:59Now initially, Ezra said Zuble was very clear in telling the
- 24:05locals, quote, you have no part with us in building this House
- 24:09of our God. Since we are alone.
- 24:11We must build it for the Lord and the God of Israel as Cyrus
- 24:15Arc, the king of Persia has commanded us.
- 24:17That's Ezra 4-3 in the BSB translation.
- 24:21But over the generations now, this retaliation has become
- 24:26worse and worse. You know, you've gathered
- 24:28together not just the Samaritans, not just the Arab,
- 24:30but the Ammonites and the Astrodites, and in particular
- 24:34this female leader, this this prophetess.
- 24:37No idea. And she's part of their
- 24:40scheming. And we're told in in Nehemiah
- 24:43chapter 2 that it failed. But the contention continued.
- 24:49So I wanted to just point out at this point, we do have 5
- 24:53righteous prophetesses mentioned in the Bible.
- 24:57There's Miriam and Deborah and Isaiah's wife and Holda.
- 25:01And then in the New Testament we have Anna.
- 25:04So we've got the couple of bad ones, one in the New Testament,
- 25:07one in the Old Testament. But we still have great women
- 25:11who are serving as prophetesses. They believed in the God of
- 25:14Abraham, but this woman now is being hired to curse and destroy
- 25:20Israel. I also want to mention that we
- 25:24use the word prophetess in the Old Testament and in the New
- 25:28Testament as one who is going to prophecy of the future.
- 25:32But in the Book of Revelation in chapter 19 verse 10, remember
- 25:36they define the gift of prophecy as one who has a testimony of
- 25:41Jesus Christ. And when Joseph Smith was the
- 25:44last couple of years of his life, he was taken before a
- 25:47court in Springfield, IL, and they said, are you a prophet?
- 25:52And he said, well, according to the John, you know, according to
- 25:55the Book of Revelation chapter 1910, you know, according to
- 25:59John, anyone with a gift of prophecy is one who has a
- 26:03testimony of Jesus Christ. So with that definition, yes, I
- 26:08am a prophet. And under that definition, I
- 26:12think the Bible and the Restoration and many, many
- 26:16beyond are filled with a testimony of Jesus Christ and
- 26:21the gift of prophecy. So I would like to broaden that
- 26:24definition far beyond these 5 great women.
- 26:27But continuing on now in Nehemiah, we're introduced to
- 26:29another daughter. And now there's a man named
- 26:32Mushulam who arranged a marriage for his daughter outside of the
- 26:36covenant. And unfortunately, this man is
- 26:41one of the chief wall builders. He's an important person, but
- 26:45his daughter's husband, the way that he's arranged this marriage
- 26:49is one of those who are fighting directly against the rebuilding
- 26:53of the wall. It's, it's really quite
- 26:56surprising that he arranged this marriage.
- 26:58It's with a man named Johanan, who's the son of Tobiah, who's
- 27:02this Ammonite who is trying to stop the work of Judah
- 27:06returning. So their marriage turns out to
- 27:11be a game for the disloyals and a real disaster for those who
- 27:17are trying to build the wall. And this poor woman who's just
- 27:20part of an arranged marriage is caught in the middle of it.
- 27:24And it's another example that the the authors of these two
- 27:27texts want to keep speaking out against interfaith marital
- 27:31conflicts. And story after story after
- 27:34story is brought up about them. The these women are active
- 27:39participants when they are part of the covenant, though, and
- 27:43that's exciting. I want to read one verse from
- 27:46Nehemiah 8, verse 2. All that could hear with
- 27:49understanding were part of the covenant.
- 27:52You know, the women and the daughters are part of these
- 27:55Israelite assemblies that are trying to build the Kingdom back
- 28:00up to where it was before. But it's a very slow process and
- 28:04it's very hard. I'm thrilled though, that
- 28:07Nehemiah 10/28 is specifically even mentions that the daughters
- 28:12are joining in. Those women who had been getting
- 28:14sold out to slavery are now being honored and allowed to be
- 28:19part of the voice and part of the commitment to make it work.
- 28:24The text also repeats that old and young women fully
- 28:27participated in quote separating themselves from evil and making
- 28:33a quote oath to walk in God's law, UN quote.
- 28:37That's verse 28. You know, they celebrated with
- 28:40music. There's joy, Jerusalem's
- 28:42dancing, and even afar off they could hear the happiness.
- 28:46This is Nehemiah 1243. There's unity again and there's
- 28:50an essential part of the covenant that it's a community
- 28:54that's working together. They're actively engaged in this
- 28:56religious instruction and covenant making and celebrating,
- 29:01which is wonderful in opposition to this group of covenant
- 29:05makers. We also have the women of the
- 29:08foreigners. We've got women of Ashot and
- 29:11Ammon and Moab and and Nehemiah. Again attacks these
- 29:16intermarriage problems in chapter 13, verses 23 and 24.
- 29:20And the new challenge is the same one that the old challenge
- 29:23was. The children are being born.
- 29:26And it says in our text that the children spoke their mothers
- 29:29languages, not Hebrew. I don't think this is just
- 29:32talking about a dialect that's different, you know, because
- 29:36they're not really speaking Hebrew anyway.
- 29:38They're speaking Aramaic if they came from Babylon.
- 29:40Aramaic is the language they're still speaking in the New
- 29:42Testament times. That's their Babylonian
- 29:44language. The problem is, is the language
- 29:46of the covenant. It's their, it's their
- 29:48commitment level. You know, I think it suggests
- 29:51that these foreign wives have not adopted their covenant
- 29:55testimonies of Jehovah. And so this phrase they could
- 29:59not speak to the Jews. Language is only a part of the
- 30:03problem. And it really takes just one
- 30:06generation of children to solve that.
- 30:09You know, you can. Children pick up languages so
- 30:11quickly that they would be able to be your translators very
- 30:13early on. But Nehemiah responds with
- 30:16absolute fury. He physically confronts these
- 30:19men for making them marrying out of the covenant, and he makes
- 30:24them swear to create no more marriages with foreigners.
- 30:28And he calls on people again to have divorces in these mothers.
- 30:32Influence affects the tenacity of the covenant.
- 30:35And the governor is is very upset about this and as one of
- 30:41his examples to ask for it to stop.
- 30:43Nehemiah goes back and talks about Solomon.
- 30:46He says in verse 26 of chapter 13.
- 30:48Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin by these things, even
- 30:53outlandish women caused him to sin.
- 30:56And unfortunately, that same problem carries on today.
- 31:01And so we end the books of Nehemiah and Ezra.
- 31:04And as I've tried to open up some of the challenges that the
- 31:07women were facing then, I hope you can get on your knees and
- 31:11pray to understand this time period better and see how it
- 31:14applies to us in our day and age.
- 31:17Because usually history repeats itself.
- 31:20But as one who has found her Messiah, as one who has a
- 31:24testimony of Jesus Christ, as one who loves the Scriptures, I
- 31:30hope and pray that you can feel the Spirit of the Lord in your
- 31:33scripture study today. In the name of Jesus Christ,
- 31:37Amen.
