- 0:52eight hundred and fiftieth show, which was actually on Tuesday. By the nature
- 1:00of doing six shows a week is that we don't always end up at the
- 1:07end of our show, even when we get to a special like number eight
- 1:11to five. Oh and there may be a point when I go ahead and
- 1:17I upload one episode at midnight one episode at noon. But in this case,
- 1:21I just decided we'll go ahead and do it on the Sunday closest and
- 1:27we're gonna bring you an episode of a series we brought to you before for
- 1:32our special. However, it's been a long time since we presented it,
- 1:37so I'm gonna give you an introduction. In nineteen forty two, Mutual introduced
- 1:44a program called Murder Clinic. Murder Clinic ran for sixty episodes, and it
- 1:53was a fascinating concept. What they did was they ran in anthology series.
- 2:00Each week it featured a different great fictional detectives. Now, some of these
- 2:08have been well remembered. There were episodes of the series done featuring Poi Row,
- 2:15Miss Marple, Father Brown, and wide variety of others that are still
- 2:23remembered today. There are others that are far more obscure. Superintendent Henry Wilson,
- 2:32there was a doctor Colin Starr, Horn Fisher, things like that.
- 2:38So it was a mix. But each one of these quantum plane a detective
- 2:44who was at the time considered one of the best ever. And that was
- 2:49the case with today's episode. This was the sixth or fifth episode of Murder
- 2:53Clinic and it tells the story a story in the Adventures of Max Carroll.
- 3:00Mister Carrados was introduced in nineteen fourteen and his stories appeared in The Strand along
- 3:08with Sherlock Holmes and sometimes the editors of The Strand actually gave Max Carrados top
- 3:15billing. Believe it or not. Oh, there's a lot of details about
- 3:19Max Carrados. But before we go into any explanation, we'll play the program
- 3:23for you. I do want to let you know today's program is brought to
- 3:27you by the financial support of our listeners. Thanks so much for your support.
- 3:31Here now is the Holloway Flat Tragedy Murder Clinic, stories of the world's
- 3:43great detectives of fiction, men against murder, All but the exploits are you
- 4:01neiques. Each week at this time, wr Mutual invite you to Murder Clinic,
- 4:06where you will meet one member of this select band in his most interesting
- 4:12case, The Curtains part in our emphatheet or of mystery. All is dark
- 4:26save for one brilliant spotlight, and out of the shadows comes Max Carrados for
- 4:35mister Carradoss. Look out, look out, sir, there's a set down
- 4:39there. May I help you? No, I can get along, good
- 4:43father, mister Knight. I can see the dark, mister Caradoss. I
- 4:46thought that you thought I was blind. Well you're right, I am.
- 4:51It's pretty bed. Thank you. Yes, I see that you do.
- 4:55But tell me, don't you find your blindness and enormous handicap and your detective
- 5:00on the contrary, it prevents me from being deceived by the obvious. I
- 5:03must rely on my other senses, which are more reliable. I assure you,
- 5:08but with the carols, I really don't you admitted, and yet you
- 5:11have eyes? Well, I shall try to convince your ears, my friend.
- 5:15Let me tell you the story of the Holloway Flat tragedy, in which
- 5:19those who had eyes saw nothing. You may recall Louis Carlyle, my very
- 5:31good friend and associate. He was a privat quarry agent and often didn't the
- 5:35honor of asking my help in some of his are more complex cases. One
- 5:41morning I have dropped in at his office. Parkinson was with me. Of
- 5:44course, he has been my personal attendant and my physical eyes for many years.
- 5:49Louis was a bit bewildered by a letter that had arrived in the morning.
- 6:08What do you make of this letter? Max? It's certainly out of
- 6:12the ordinary run of my correspondence. Good done paper, little head, engraved
- 6:18Albert Henry Purish, written by hand. I see did see what he has
- 6:25to say? Important? See you alone, absolutely privacy. We'll call ten
- 6:33o'clock tomorrow morning and age punished again. Max? How do you do it?
- 6:42I've seen it a hundred times. I still can't believe it. My
- 6:45idea, Why are things you can't see so mysterious to you? You wouldn't
- 6:49be surprised to watch me reading Brail, would you? Well? The income
- 6:54this paper is as clear as Brail to me. But to get back to
- 6:58this letter, you're a mysterious If it's a Polish because he's coming this morning,
- 7:02perhaps I'd better go. I wish you wouldn't, Max, but he
- 7:05says here absolutely privacy. M Yeah, Look Max, I have an idea.
- 7:13Why didn't you win Parkinson? Go into the next office and leave the
- 7:16door cracked just a bit, so if you can listen in this Polish affair,
- 7:20might in pishit? Yes? What is it? Ah? It send
- 7:29him in in one minute. It's here now, all right, Louis,
- 7:34if you wish it, come on Parkinson. Let's go very well, sir
- 7:43whom the door too, but it's not too close to Parkinson. Yes,
- 7:46sir Ah, that must be often Polish. Now yes? Are you alone?
- 7:58Why? Yes? I don't think he sat me to come here.
- 8:01I was careful the girl. What did you wish to tell me about?
- 8:07Is the Carlisle? Someone is trying to murder me when talking this promises to
- 8:11be surely I know it sounds impossible that I kill you. It's true.
- 8:18He's made one attempt to my life already. Oh, Peter, Peter r
- 8:22I durning his last name. He's a polliner, used to be engaged to
- 8:24the girl, the girl you wish to marry. Oh no, nothing like
- 8:30that. I met it already. Oh, I see, it's not what
- 8:33you're thinking. There's nothing between us really. But you see, well,
- 8:37my wife, she's a highly nervous woman to Carlisle insomnia. And that's all
- 8:41of a sudden. As a matter of fact, we've had separate rooms for
- 8:45every year. Now. Yeah, I understand. Well when mother this girl
- 8:50found out I was married, there was a scene as well, yes,
- 8:52most unpleasant, but nothing compared to what happened when she told her boyfriend Peter.
- 8:56He tried to murder me. Are you quite sure that? Let me
- 9:01tell you what happened that night after the row. I mean I couldn't sleep,
- 9:05I was jumping. I saw that I go out for a bit,
- 9:09walk it on. So I got up, fixed a bolster and a pillow
- 9:13with my bathrobe over it in the bed. And then excuse me, and
- 9:16why did you do that? I told you my wife's a highly nervous woman.
- 9:20You saw me up? If she came in and saw my bed empty,
- 9:24she'd be likely to get his tereks or sometimes see well. I fixed
- 9:28up this dummy in my bed and went out. I walked around maybe half
- 9:33an hour. When I got back, he was coming up the stairs.
- 9:35We live in a block of plants. I came face to face with a
- 9:39man coming up. It was Peter. What did you do? I didn't
- 9:41do anything. When he saw me, he hurried back against the ball and
- 9:46gasped, looked as we'd seen a ghost. That's what I could say a
- 9:48word. He gas passed me down the stairs and out of a house like
- 9:52a shot. And when I got up to my room there was a booster
- 9:54in the bathrobe I left in the bed stapped through him through the knife.
- 10:00They had written a knife do what you thought was my body? Well,
- 10:03mister Polish, that's plain evidence of attempted murder. This this is a policeman.
- 10:09That's just what I can't have. I think what it wouldn't is it
- 10:13inquiries, cross examinations, explanations. The whole thing would come up. My
- 10:16home would be broken up, my whole life room. What can I do,
- 10:20mister Polish? What you want? I continue when I don't want mister
- 10:24callis I don't want to be murdered and I don't want my wife to get
- 10:26wind of this in this affair. Well, mister Polish, I should advise
- 10:31your going away for a while. It's impossible just now my business. Well
- 10:33then until you can, I should advise new locks on all your doors,
- 10:39in your windows. That means locksmith's more questions my wife's nerve Not surely,
- 10:43mister Polish. That's caring consideration a bit far. How did you account for
- 10:48the cut linen the bolster? Oh, I've hidden them away in the drawer
- 10:52until I can buy another sheet and cover. I managed to serve up the
- 10:54bolster. Well, mister Polish, it's a unique problem. I don't see
- 11:00a moment just how I can advise cam Parkinston. This interview is practically over.
- 11:03Let's get out into the anteroom. I should like to see this fool
- 11:07heartad but diverse. It has been good day, Colin. It's been a
- 11:13great relief to me telling more about I see that someone in the anteroom isn't
- 11:20another way out of I don't want to see quite all right? As Polished
- 11:22is the carodot blind, I'd like you to meet him blind do say you
- 11:28all right? Oh? Next, I'd like you to meet mister Polish.
- 11:33How do you do, mister Polish? Oh yes, yes, pardon my
- 11:37glad, won't you You see I'm missing part of the single in my right
- 11:41hand, and I'm sensitive about you needn't be misster Polish. I found physically
- 11:45infirmative. They have their compensations. I can see that. I must be

- 12:11the right Luis, tell me what does mister Polish look like? Why?
- 12:15Max? He's a medium height, average weight. He's got got of Browning's
- 12:22hair, and I see, Luis medium average, a perfect picture. And
- 12:28what would you say, Parking? And mister Polish is five foot nine,
- 12:31sir. He weighs in the neighborhood of eleven stone six. His hair is
- 12:37light brown, several shades lighter than his brow. He has a small mold
- 12:41beneath the left eye. Clothing but material but not custom me glove on right,
- 12:48hair only coskin, I should say help Foster enough. Incidentally, you

- 15:26me not four days ago. A bit of mick, I could say,
- 15:28with the Carlisle, because we've got our murderer before we even start. Polish
- 15:33didn't happen to give you the name? The dress of this young lady?
- 15:35Did eat? No? No, I mean they left something to unify.

- 16:40just leave everything to stop her inspector horrible better and get it out of here?
- 16:55He is Come on, nummy, he is an arst sip. I've

- 17:07It looks like there's been a wild beast at work. It fits him
- 17:12with what we know what he told me himself, then rage and sheer blood,
- 17:18cirstams eecters. Mister Cadadas. Are you sure the corpse is Polish?
- 17:23Why I might have been for granted, mister Cadadas, Why do you are
- 17:27I'm always suspicious of these murders where the victim's face is best beyond recognition metals.
- 17:33You are right, Max, he's fairly unrecognizable. Wait, yes,
- 17:40yes, it's Polish. All right here, I seemed the missing on the

- 17:48with him the other day in the office. Yes, I remember that,
- 17:49but it will nevertheless inspected. I'd compare our victim's finger Prince, the doors
- 17:53of mister Polish's if I were you, mister Caddas, we haven't polished his
- 17:57fingerprintip, my dear, and then must be literally hundreds of them around this

- 19:32uncle, take a look at this. Here's whether Peter Fellow must have
- 19:36come in. Here's marks on the window sill. You're right, George,
- 19:38easy is ring of roses. There's the balcony in the stairway window and on
- 19:42the yard aware Kimurders seems to have gone out of his way and make things
- 19:48easy for you. It fits max its blind jealous rage and didn't have the
- 19:52wit to cover his clack. Too bad, polish didn't take my advice about
- 19:56changing the locks on his door and window. I mean, yes, what

- 21:47as well as I do, you, you'll understand that all theo there's always
- 21:51something in what he says. It's not always what you think it is.
- 21:55That's right, mister Carroda. That's just why do you think the murderer might
- 21:57have written, I tell you spoken on the bed obviously inspected to make sure
- 22:03you wouldn't miss it. No, you're right, mister Kadace. This pee,
- 22:08Peter has been pretty helpful. Nothing too the case, just a simple
- 22:14routine job of finding the shop girl and an Italian boy bull dog. You
- 22:18are inspector, but I wonder while you're pursuing this simple routine job, would
- 22:25you do a favor for me? Why? Of course, mister cares anything
- 22:27alike if it was, if you think it'll help find the murderer. Thanks,
- 22:30Inspector. Now this is what I want you to do. Yes,

- 24:44And tell them to meet us in the lobby of the Peacot Club and tell
- 24:47them to be sure to wait in the lobby for me. Oh, Louis,
- 24:56you got you before me? Hello, man, and its sect to
- 24:59be mister Karadas. You called it to a turn? How you ever guessed

- 25:15blind that a man, George, that's the famous compliment you could have paid
- 25:18me. Now, what's happened so far? Well? As soon as we
- 25:22had them spotted, I talked to the manager. There was a little trouble,
- 25:26but Uncle fixed that as soon as he got here. One of our
- 25:27own men took over the waiter's job at their table, though they seemed careful
- 25:32when he was around. Just one thing he caught though. When our men
- 25:36came up, she was saying something about there might even be a raid here,
- 25:40to look for Peter the Italian, and then they both laughed. Yet
- 25:45they wouldn't laugh. I'm going in there alone. We can't hear the mister
- 25:48Cadadas. It's still big a risk. The man has a gun on him.
- 25:52We spotted that these people are desperate, dangerous. It would turn to
- 25:55what he inspect to believe me, I'll be see just one thing he eyes
- 26:00on me when I unloosened my scarf, so that master switch in the US
- 26:03box turn out a mid night in the place. It's important, mister Kada.
- 26:07I won't hear of it. I last it. He's in there already.
- 26:19Made you finish yours. No hurry, we have plenty of time.
- 26:23Oh, don't finish your carritake. I'm nervous here. I still think it
- 26:29was a crazy standard. Don't worry. It's over a month now. Nothing
- 26:33good evening, good evening. He listened to meet you again, mister Polish.
- 26:37Well, what do you mean what the course. How stupid of me.
- 26:42I couldn't expect you to remender me, mister Polish, after all we
- 26:45met only one muster some mistake I never joined, mister Polish, you would
- 26:49recall your visit to mister Carlyle. As you were leaving, I was sitting
- 26:53in the answer room. I've told you there must be some mistake. My
- 26:57name is not Polish. Of course, how stupid of me. Oh,
- 27:02you must forgive me. You couldn't be tolish, could you. I remember
- 27:06now I've been somewhere the pope and it was murdered one was it? Yes,
- 27:11terrible thing. But what an embarrassing mistake. You know. It's only
- 27:15the second time in my life it's happened to me. I'm mistaking a voice.
- 27:18I mean you see I'm blind, Oh, yes, miss pipe blind.
- 27:23And I've always prided myself on never forgetting a voice, and now here
- 27:27I am forgetting the first. You've made your second mistake, So if you'll
- 27:33excuse me, Yes, it's all coming back to me now. How could
- 27:36I have forgotten? Why? Only the other day mister Carlyle was telling me
- 27:41about that Ligro murder game. The police setting in on the little game they're
- 27:45playing what little game? What do you mean? Well, I shouldn't tell
- 27:48you. It's in the strictest confidence, of course, but you've been so
- 27:52kind. Yes, yes, what little game? Fine, it's Peter.
- 27:59Tell you who mean they found him? Found? That's Jestic the police.
- 28:03No, there's no such a person. Ridiculous. I all the evidence in
- 28:07the newspapers planted every Pacific. Imagine that why they even know who didn't do
- 28:15it? You see, the police had discovered that the man who called on
- 28:18Carlyle that day wasn't used to Polish at all. He was the wife's lover.
- 28:22This is Polish. I mean, that's very interesting. He didn't,
- 28:27you see, Polish's wife and her lover had tend to murder Polish all along.
- 28:32So he the lover I mean went to Carlyle was Polish and study yarn
- 28:37about some non existent Italian who would already tried to kill him that's never loved
- 28:42them to supply the police would have murdered. They've never good time. Why
- 28:47are you telling me all this when I thought this is under strictly for Polish
- 28:52and all that, you might be interested. But if I'm boring you,
- 28:57it must have been the wife who planned the whole She wanted the lover and
- 29:00her husband's money booth. The police know that. Cant to a thing about
- 29:06it, that is it didn't they find a lover? Of course, if
- 29:10they once find him, it's simple they've both hangs unless the lover turns toshibidence
- 29:15and that's a saved his life is good? You shutter back, were absolutely
- 29:22what are you thinking? But on the other hand, if they never find

- 29:53to missus, Pulish has just shot and killed her partner in clime, you
- 29:57know, dead men tell their tables. If I hadn't consented it by catching
- 30:00her would have found the gun in his hand and the verdict might have been
- 30:04suicide. Who is mostly young? Lady armisis to you tell you so I
- 30:10could kill you? No, no, my dear lady, you mean you
- 30:12would kill me? The two are not synonymous. Well, mister Carodoffs,
- 30:27that was a very pretty trap that elaborate, perhaps was privy elaborate. Yes,
- 30:33Rather, I weren't you taking a chance personally and turning out the lights
- 30:37that way? Who you could get this to night in the dark? It
- 30:41is I who can see, I who have the advantage without light. We
- 30:45were killing in my backyard. Yes, I could see how your blindness helped
- 30:49you there. But tell me this, how did you get onto them in
- 30:53the first I gotten my first clue to the truth because I didn't trust my
- 30:59eyes having their eyes. You remember when we found that she didn't those two
- 31:03cases so beautifully didn't fast in mind, the knife thrusting just the right place
- 31:08to bear out the story Louis her Yes, yes, But Beetle and Carlisle
- 31:14and George, they saw them too, exactly they saw them, but I
- 31:19I smelled them. They were perfumed, my friend. They had been taken

- 31:45You have been listening to Murder when w Our Mutual series which brings you
- 32:01each week one exciting case. One member from the Select Band of the World's
- 32:07Great Detective. Tonight's detective was mister Max Caronon and was played by Alfred show
- 32:29Lloyd. Carlisle was played by Horace Brayer. Original music was composed by Ralph
- 32:35Barnhardt and conducted by Bob stem The tales told on Murder Clinic are adapted by
- 32:40authors Lee Wright and John A. Bappan. Murder Clinic is produced under the
- 32:46direction of Elvin Flanagan. This is Frank Knight speaking. This is the mutual
- 33:01broadcast season Welcome Back. While a very neat solution, and I had to
- 33:15love the gentle way he read the police about being taken in by this ruse
- 33:21that he saw through. Really a great concept. It's been done since,
- 33:25but this was as far as I know, the original Blind Detective story.
- 33:30There were four separate Max Carrados books publish There was Max Carrados in nineteen fourteen,
- 33:38The Eyes of Max Carrados Max in nineteen twenty three, The Max Carrados
- 33:45Mysteries in nineteen twenty seven, and The Bravo of London in nineteen thirty four,
- 33:51which was actually a full fledged novel. And Carados has appeared in quite
- 33:58in a few I shouldn't say quite a few, but in a few other
- 34:01media productions. One of them was on the television series The Rivals of Sherlock
- 34:07Holmes from the nineteen seventies and That's been a series I've always been somewhat fascinated
- 34:15with because they had a lot of forgotten detectives in that series well, including
- 34:22Lady Molly of Scotland Yard, which has always sounded like an interesting concept from
- 34:27Baroness Orczy, who of course wrote The Scarlet Pimpernel, and of course Alfred
- 34:32Shirley, who played Max Carrados in this episode, would have a few other
- 34:37claims to fame as well. Longtime listeners of the show will remember him as
- 34:43the first Doctor Watson to John Stanley's Holmes. He also played in the CBS
- 34:50Radio series as a Hearthstone of the Desquad. All right, well, that'll
- 34:55do it for today. We'll be back with you on Monday with Frank Race.
