- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33Have you ever started your work day and
- 0:35thought about how you're doing and just thought,
- 0:39wow, you know, I'm too encouraged right now.
- 0:42People have just been too encouraging to me
- 0:44recently.
- 0:45I could do with a little less encouragement
- 0:46in my life.
- 0:48No, of course, you've never felt this way.
- 0:50You've never felt this way.
- 0:52Most of us, all of us, have not
- 0:54enough encouragement rather than too much.
- 0:57And there's something about, maybe it's unique to
- 1:00the United States, I don't know, but our
- 1:01work culture where it can feel like encouragement
- 1:04is almost like this bonus.
- 1:07Like encouragement isn't really, you know, essential to
- 1:10the work.
- 1:10It's nice if somebody compliments you or recognizes
- 1:13you.
- 1:13But really, you know, it's just here's the
- 1:15work, do it, get it done.
- 1:16That should be what's expected.
- 1:18Encouragement is some icing on the cake.
- 1:20This is not the vision of encouragement that
- 1:23we see in the Bible.
- 1:25In the Bible, encouragement is vital.
- 1:28Encouragement is a source of strength to do
- 1:31the work that God has called you to
- 1:32do.
- 1:33It pops up all over the place.
- 1:35I think about Barnabas in the book of
- 1:37Acts.
- 1:38He's introduced in Chapter 4, and his name,
- 1:41Barnabas, is actually a nickname.
- 1:43It means son of encouragement.
- 1:44His original name was Joseph, but apparently he
- 1:47was just so encouraging that people were like,
- 1:49there goes little Encouragito, son of encouragement.
- 1:53And it was like that's how he became
- 1:54known, was the son of encouragement, Barnabas.
- 1:56What a cool thing for that to be
- 1:58kind of part of how he was known,
- 2:00his capacity to encourage others.
- 2:02It comes up as a command in Scripture.
- 2:05So Paul, in his epistles, he not only
- 2:09talks about his desire for encouragement and his
- 2:12need for encouragement.
- 2:13He also commands encouragement.
- 2:15So this is 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5, verses
- 2:189 through 11.
- 2:20For God did not appoint us to suffer
- 2:21wrath, but to receive salvation through our Lord
- 2:24Jesus Christ.
- 2:25He died for us so that, whether we
- 2:28are awake or asleep, we may live together
- 2:31with him.
- 2:32Therefore, encourage one another and build each other
- 2:35up, just as in fact you are doing.
- 2:39Okay, so again, encouragement is commanded.
- 2:43Encouragement is central.
- 2:45Even this metaphor that Paul uses here, build
- 2:47each other up, encourage one another and build
- 2:50each other up.
- 2:51Encouragement is like a fuel or a building
- 2:53material.
- 2:54It has a strengthening effect in our lives.
- 2:57It's necessary for the hard work that God
- 3:01is calling us to do.
- 3:03So I want to talk about two sides
- 3:05of encouragement.
- 3:06And to do this, I want to look
- 3:08at what I think is the first time
- 3:10that encouragement is commanded in the Bible.
- 3:12So I was prepping for this episode and
- 3:14did a little bit of reading, did a
- 3:16little bit of Bible gateway sleuthing.
- 3:17And I think the first time that encouragement
- 3:20is commanded by God to anyone is in
- 3:24the book of Deuteronomy, when he's talking to
- 3:26Moses about how Moses is not going to
- 3:29enter the promised land, but Joshua, his assistant,
- 3:32is.
- 3:33So it's this kind of divine succession plan
- 3:35for God's people, right?
- 3:37So let me just read this section.
- 3:40Backstory here was Moses had disobeyed the Lord
- 3:43in an instance where he struck a rock
- 3:45when God told him not to.
- 3:46And this was very significant.
- 3:48And so it led to this consequence of
- 3:50Moses not entering the promised land.
- 3:52So Moses is the one who's writing here
- 3:54in Deuteronomy 1, starting in verse 37 or
- 3:59speaking.
- 4:01And he's speaking to the people of Israel.
- 4:03Because of you, the Lord became angry with
- 4:05me also and said, you shall not enter
- 4:07it, that is the promised land, either.
- 4:10But your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will
- 4:13enter it.
- 4:14Encourage him, because he will lead Israel to
- 4:18inherit it.
- 4:21Okay, so Moses is kind of reporting what
- 4:24God has said to him to the people
- 4:25of Israel.
- 4:26He's saying, you know, God got mad at
- 4:28me because of you.
- 4:28So, I mean, it's interesting.
- 4:29It's one of those kind of like touchy
- 4:31things where Moses is like, it's my fault,
- 4:32but it's your fault too, Israel.
- 4:34You know, and that's fair, right?
- 4:36Like neither Moses nor any of that generation
- 4:39of the Israelites got to enter the promised
- 4:41land.
- 4:42But Joshua, it's incumbent upon him now to
- 4:45lead the people.
- 4:46So Moses is reporting what God said to
- 4:48him.
- 4:48And what did God say?
- 4:49God said, your assistant, Joshua son of Nun,
- 4:52will enter the promised land.
- 4:54Encourage him, because he will lead Israel to
- 4:56inherit it.
- 4:57So of all the things that God could
- 4:59have told Moses to tell Joshua with this
- 5:01big succession plan, he could have said, counsel
- 5:04him.
- 5:04He could have said, guide him.
- 5:06He could have said, pray for him.
- 5:08He says, encourage him.
- 5:10The one thing that he's really going to
- 5:11need is encouragement.
- 5:14Okay, now two sides of encouragement, right?
- 5:18The one side of encouragement is encouragement about
- 5:22the presence and action of God.
- 5:25So think about the story of Israel, right?
- 5:29How does God show up?
- 5:30He shows up at the Red Sea.
- 5:32He parts the Red Sea.
- 5:34How does he lead the people?
- 5:35He leads the people in a pillar of
- 5:36fire and a pillar of cloud, right?
- 5:38How does he provide for the people?
- 5:40He provides for them miraculous bread from heaven,
- 5:42manna and quail, so they get their protein
- 5:45too.
- 5:45And there's all these kind of miracles throughout
- 5:48the story of God providing for his people.
- 5:51He's present with them.
- 5:53It's because God is with them that they're
- 5:55able to move through the desert, that they're
- 5:57able now to move to the promised land.
- 5:59Well, what happens with the story of Joshua?
- 6:03God continues to show up.
- 6:05And it's like he almost echoes his earlier
- 6:08work, right?
- 6:08So they have to cross the Jordan River
- 6:10to enter the promised land.
- 6:12And what happens?
- 6:13The Jordan River parts.
- 6:14It's like this little echo of what happened
- 6:16at the Red Sea a generation earlier.
- 6:18It's like God is saying, I'm still with
- 6:20you.
- 6:22So when encouragement is needed, which is all
- 6:26the time, one way to encourage is to
- 6:30remind people of the presence and action of
- 6:32God, to say God is with you.
- 6:35That is a really powerful way to encourage.
- 6:38Let's just hop back real quick to that
- 6:401 Thessalonians passage, right?
- 6:42Where it's commanded.
- 6:43What's the context of encouraging one another?
- 6:46It says, So
- 7:00in other words, it's saying the resurrection of
- 7:02Jesus means that we will also share in
- 7:06his resurrection, whether we are awake or asleep.
- 7:08In other words, whether we live or die,
- 7:10we will live together with him.
- 7:12Because of Jesus' death and resurrection, we also
- 7:14will experience resurrection life, even if we die.
- 7:18This is the startling claim of the gospel
- 7:21message.
- 7:23Therefore, encourage one another and build each other
- 7:26up.
- 7:26In other words, remind one another about the
- 7:30power of the resurrection.
- 7:31Remind one another of the hope of resurrection.
- 7:33When the going gets tough, remind each other,
- 7:37Jesus is risen.
- 7:40He will raise us on the last day.
- 7:42That's what makes it worth it to stay
- 7:44faithful here, even when there's suffering, even when
- 7:46there's challenge, even when there's difficulty.
- 7:49Okay, so that's the first side of encouragement,
- 7:51is we encourage each other about the presence
- 7:53and action of God.
- 7:54This is relevant even to secular workplaces.
- 7:58And it can be tough, right?
- 7:59Because if somebody doesn't share your convictions about
- 8:02God, it might be awkward to be like,
- 8:04God is with you, right?
- 8:05And yet I've seen people do this in
- 8:08very clever ways.
- 8:10So I just want to brag a little
- 8:12bit about my boss's boss's boss.
- 8:16So Julie Yurko, she's the CEO of Northern
- 8:20Illinois Food Bank, where I work, and she
- 8:21doesn't listen to this podcast, so she doesn't
- 8:23know that I'm bragging about her.
- 8:25But she was in this meeting once with
- 8:27like 30 or so team members who were
- 8:30working on this really challenging project, and she
- 8:32wanted to encourage us.
- 8:33And so what she did is she gave
- 8:35us little stickers, and they were stickers of
- 8:38the Blues Brothers.
- 8:39And so, you know, we're in the Chicago
- 8:41suburbs, and the Blues Brothers is like a
- 8:42Chicago movie, you know, classic with the Belushi's
- 8:45and Dan Aykroyd and, you know, classic comedy.
- 8:50But the line, what's the famous line, you
- 8:53know, from the book?
- 8:53It's, we're on a mission from, not from
- 8:55the book, from the movie.
- 8:56We're on a mission from God.
- 8:57And so she gave all these stickers, even
- 8:59though Northern Illinois Food Bank is not a
- 9:01religious organization.
- 9:02And she said, right, you know, we're not
- 9:05a religious organization.
- 9:06I know we all have different perspectives on
- 9:07this.
- 9:08But I really feel that there's a way
- 9:10in which we're on a mission from God,
- 9:11and I just want to remind you of
- 9:12that.
- 9:13It was so great, right?
- 9:15Nobody, I think, would respond to that and
- 9:17say like, well, that's just exclusionary towards people
- 9:20who don't believe, right?
- 9:21Like even if you don't share conviction, you
- 9:23understand the sentiment.
- 9:24She's saying what we're doing really matters.
- 9:25I believe it ultimately comes from God.
- 9:27I want to encourage you.
- 9:29So I would encourage you to figure out
- 9:32in your workplace, can you figure out a
- 9:35way to say to other people, hey, remember,
- 9:38the work you do matters.
- 9:39You're on a mission from God.
- 9:41And again, that's not a stretch even in
- 9:44secular workplaces.
- 9:45Inasmuch as our work serves the common good,
- 9:48it's serving the purposes of God in the
- 9:50world.
- 9:51It's part of God's action in the world,
- 9:53even if it's not explicitly Christian ministry.
- 9:57Okay, so look for those creative ways to
- 9:59encourage people.
- 10:00And obviously, if you're in a Christian workplace,
- 10:02you know, or with Christian coworkers, you can
- 10:04just do it explicitly.
- 10:05You can remind people, hey, if you're doing
- 10:06this out of love, you know, remember, Jesus
- 10:10is with us.
- 10:11He's going to raise us up on the
- 10:12last day.
- 10:13The work that we're doing right now has
- 10:14eternal significance because of his grace, because of
- 10:17his presence.
- 10:19Okay, the other side of encouragement though, this
- 10:22is person-specific encouragement, right?
- 10:25Encouraging someone because you see how God is
- 10:27at work in and through them.
- 10:29And this can be so powerful, right?
- 10:31I imagine this is some of what God
- 10:33had in mind when he told Moses to
- 10:35encourage Joshua is that he wanted Moses.
- 10:38He was Moses, right?
- 10:39He was, you know, the Ten Commandments, the
- 10:40Red Sea, the deliverance from Egypt, all that.
- 10:43It would be a big deal for Moses
- 10:44to look at somebody and say, hey, you
- 10:46have what it takes to lead the people
- 10:49of God.
- 10:50In God's grace, as he's with you, you
- 10:52have what it takes.
- 10:53If I was Joshua, I'd be like, well,
- 10:54Moses thinks I have what it takes.
- 10:55I mean, what better authority could I ask
- 10:57for?
- 10:58This is the gift that we give to
- 10:59each other where we look at one another.
- 11:02We're in the same work.
- 11:03We're in the same struggle.
- 11:05And so we are the qualified authority to
- 11:08speak to how important other people's contributions to
- 11:12that struggle are.
- 11:13So you are uniquely positioned to encourage your
- 11:16coworkers, your teammates in a way that other
- 11:18people wouldn't be able to do.
- 11:20And again, as we're talking about the meaning
- 11:22of work and how love is one of
- 11:25these aspects of the meaning of work, one
- 11:27of the best ways you can love a
- 11:28teammate is to encourage them.
- 11:31And let me talk a little bit about
- 11:32how not to encourage and then how to
- 11:34encourage.
- 11:34So how not to encourage is what I
- 11:36call like the vague drive-by.
- 11:38Sometimes like team leaders are guilty of this,
- 11:40where they're really busy and they kind of
- 11:42feel like, I really should encourage my team,
- 11:45but I don't really know what they're working
- 11:47on right now.
- 11:48I'm kind of busy, so I'm not going
- 11:49to find out.
- 11:49I'm just going to like swing by their
- 11:51cubicle and say, hey, keep up the good
- 11:53work.
- 11:54And then disappear into my office and do
- 11:56those other high-level decision things I have
- 11:57to do.
- 11:58So it's kind of the vague drive-by
- 12:00encouragement.
- 12:00It's like, ah, it's probably better than nothing.
- 12:02Maybe, maybe not, right?
- 12:04Because it's sort of this like, okay, is
- 12:07this really about me or is this about
- 12:08making you feel good?
- 12:09Because it's just so vague.
- 12:11It's like, how meaningful can it be?
- 12:12In order for an encouragement to be meaningful,
- 12:15I was thinking about this.
- 12:16I put together an acronym.
- 12:18It needs guts.
- 12:20It needs some oomph in it.
- 12:22So guts is the acronym.
- 12:23G-U-T-S.
- 12:26For an encouragement to really be meaningful, it
- 12:28needs to be genuine, understanding, timely, and specific.
- 12:35Genuine, understanding, timely, and specific.
- 12:38So genuine.
- 12:39You should believe whatever it is you're going
- 12:41to say when you encourage.
- 12:41So no false encouragement, no flattery.
- 12:44It should be from the heart.
- 12:45Then understanding.
- 12:46It needs to reflect you understand the significance
- 12:50of what the other person does.
- 12:51You know why what they do matters.
- 12:53You know what they've brought to the team
- 12:54that has made a difference.
- 12:56And then timely.
- 12:57Tell them that it made a difference while
- 13:00it's happening or shortly thereafter.
- 13:02And then specific.
- 13:03Again, talk about the details.
- 13:05When you did this during this important project,
- 13:08I saw these qualities and strengths in you,
- 13:11and I so appreciated those.
- 13:13I got to see this in action recently
- 13:15with one of the managers in our company,
- 13:19or at the food bank rather.
- 13:21She saw somebody stepping into a new kind
- 13:23of volunteer coordinator role for one of our
- 13:25special fundraiser events, and she specifically called out,
- 13:28hey, we got really specific feedback about how
- 13:30your coordination of that event made it flow
- 13:33more smoothly.
- 13:34Great example, right?
- 13:35It was genuine.
- 13:37It reflected understanding of the importance of that
- 13:39event for the mission of the food bank.
- 13:40It was timely.
- 13:41This happened the day of the event or
- 13:43maybe the next week.
- 13:44And then it was specific.
- 13:45It was about how she had stepped into
- 13:47that volunteer coordinator role.
- 13:49So think about how you can do this.
- 13:51You are better positioned to do this than
- 13:53most other human beings for your particular teammates
- 13:56and co-workers.
- 13:57And so part of your privilege as an
- 14:01ambassador of the kingdom of God in your
- 14:03workplace is to take advantage of your authority,
- 14:06your insights that very few other human beings
- 14:08would have about the particular strengths of your
- 14:10co-workers, and encourage them in those particular
- 14:13strengths in a way that's genuine and understanding
- 14:17and timely and specific.
- 14:19So encourage with guts.
- 14:21And that is one of the most practical
- 14:23ways you can love your co-workers.
- 14:26And that's something that a machine, an AI,
- 14:29cannot do.
- 14:30Even if you programmed an AI and said,
- 14:32AI, look at my emails and my tasks,
- 14:34and then every week send me an encouraging
- 14:35note about the specific value I'm bringing to
- 14:37the company.
- 14:38Even if you did that, right, how much
- 14:41more meaningful would it be for a human
- 14:43being to do it?
- 14:44Again, because the human being has to take
- 14:46the time and the energy, the specificity of
- 14:49their embodied relationship with that person in a
- 14:51way that a machine cannot do.
- 14:54There's going to be more power, more strength
- 14:56that's given when you, as a human being,
- 15:00choose to love your co-workers in this
- 15:01way.
- 15:02And so it's a uniquely powerful way to
- 15:05make your work meaningful, is to love your
- 15:07co-workers by encouraging them.
- 15:11Lord Jesus, thank you for the power of
- 15:13your resurrection.
- 15:13Thank you that we can encourage one another
- 15:15with that hope of resurrection life.
- 15:18And thank you that you see each of
- 15:19us individually, and you help us see each
- 15:21other and see others and their unique gifts
- 15:23and strengths.
- 15:25Help us to love them.
- 15:27Help us to name them.
- 15:29Help us to encourage them.
- 15:31Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 15:33do our work with you.
- 15:34Amen.
- 15:39Thanks for listening.
