- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon podcast, the First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:08preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:11learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:15So it's been a little bit of time, Jeremy, since you and I
- 0:19sat down together, just the two of us last week.
- 0:22We got to sit down with a couple of the young adults who went to
- 0:25Passion. We took a little Christmas
- 0:28break. I had a conversation with Will
- 0:31in there because you were somewhere.
- 0:34I was in Mexico. You were in Mexico?
- 0:35Yep, Yep. So it's been a minute since
- 0:38we've sat down together. Did you have a good Christmas?
- 0:42Good new year? It's all blurred, yeah, in the
- 0:45past month, but I remember there being good moments and happiness
- 0:50around Christmas, like nothing bad.
- 0:52So I'm, I'm assuming it was great, yeah.
- 0:56We didn't have anybody end up in the emergency room at the
- 0:59hospital this year. So that was automatic upgrade.
- 1:06No, it was nice. We we had a good, it was still
- 1:09busy. There were wrestling
- 1:10tournaments, there were, you know, family things.
- 1:13There were people we wanted to see and that kind of stuff.
- 1:17But but in some ways it was. Just a little.
- 1:20Little choir we, we intentionally chose in some ways
- 1:24to do less after last year when we couldn't all be together on
- 1:30Christmas. Yeah, you know, it was a really
- 1:32high priority for us to be together as the six of us.
- 1:35Also, knowing that, you know, Tim graduates high school in the
- 1:40spring and you know things change when you go off into
- 1:44college. You're going to leave the nest.
- 1:47Yeah, might meet a girl someday and go home for Christmas and
- 1:51you know. By next Christmas, it.
- 1:53Could happen. It could happen.
- 1:55I mean, I'm pretty sure I came home my freshman year for
- 1:58Christmas, but one of my years of college, I I, I didn't even
- 2:01go home. Oh, really?
- 2:03Yeah, I I went to Ecuador for a month instead, all over
- 2:06Christmas break and. Had to have those Guinea pigs,
- 2:11yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:15Christmas is always a unique weird time since being in
- 2:19ministry, Yeah, where it's like blending the well, I mean, like
- 2:24even and then marriage, right? Blending 2 sets of tradition and
- 2:28then also the things that go into ministry in that.
- 2:31Like the church tradition where you're serving like kind of.
- 2:34Yeah, all of that. And and then this, you're having
- 2:37to go to Mexico to take care of some personal stuff and mixed
- 2:41in. And then Passion was a little
- 2:43earlier this year. So New Year's Eve, we were
- 2:45flying out with the college kids and yeah, so it all just kind of
- 2:49happened, like back-to-back to back-to-back to back.
- 2:51And but the boys had a good Christmas and playing with all
- 2:56the dinosaurs and trains and your boys leaving.
- 3:01Yeah. How's that?
- 3:03It's heavy, it's heavy, it's good.
- 3:07It's what we've aimed for, right, to have kids who grow up,
- 3:12mature, know where they feel like they're headed in life, and
- 3:18leave the the nest to do it right.
- 3:21So it's good in that sense, but it's hard.
- 3:26It's a lot of things shifting. So we're enjoying all that we
- 3:31can, prioritizing as much of his senior year of wrestling as we
- 3:37can. Destroying everybody in his
- 3:39path. He is, yeah.
- 3:41He's doing pretty well. Not going to say I'm counting
- 3:45down the number of matches we have left to watch him, but it
- 3:47is 23. What are what as a pastor?
- 3:54And I like the, I don't like it, but like the the terms that
- 3:58pastors use of like casting vision.
- 4:02What vision are you casting for our congregation this calendar
- 4:07year? I think my goal this or at least
- 4:10in the first half of this year, because I haven't necessarily
- 4:16thought through the entire year. I don't usually think about the
- 4:20second-half of the year until we're coming up on summer and
- 4:24especially over the summer trying to really pray through
- 4:27what we're doing. But in the first half of this
- 4:29year, which unlike some other years, took me a while to settle
- 4:34in on, I think probably 3 of the last four years over the summer,
- 4:41I've prayed about what to preach, what kind of vision to
- 4:44cast through preaching, since that's the primary way I speak
- 4:46to the whole congregation. I've kind of had a whole school
- 4:51year sketched out by the end of the summer.
- 4:54This year that wasn't the case. And it's only been in the last
- 4:57few weeks that the rest of this school year has kind of fallen
- 5:02into place. I think what I'm feeling led to
- 5:07is encouraging our people to get closer to God, what obviously
- 5:16always the goal, but. Radical.
- 5:19But getting closer to God in such a way that we can withstand
- 5:26and and flourish as a church no matter what comes in the future.
- 5:32And so that's why in this opening series for the first
- 5:36year, we're talking about hearing God because I think
- 5:37that's such a key part of what it means to walk with God and is
- 5:42going to be foundational for some of the other things we talk
- 5:46about this year. So like we have to walk with
- 5:50God, we have to recognize his voice.
- 5:52We have to know where he's leading us.
- 5:54Because as we're going to talk about in Lent, part of a call is
- 5:58to deny ourselves right to take up our cross and follow Jesus.
- 6:02That's what he told us, right? And so if we're going to listen
- 6:05to what Jesus told us, then there's there's an aspect of
- 6:09self denial to this call to follow him.
- 6:12And that has to walk a fine line, a tightrope, right, right
- 6:17between legalism on one side where we say as a church,
- 6:23everybody has to do this and just a free for all of I can do
- 6:30whatever I want because of God's grace, right?
- 6:32So we see that talked about in Romans and other places.
- 6:37We're not free to do what we want because we have been bought
- 6:41with a price. And so figuring out what it is
- 6:46that God is asking us as part of a community but also as
- 6:50individuals, where He's asking us to deny ourselves, Where
- 6:55those things that we're prioritizing are becoming maybe
- 7:00even idols in our lives. Walking with God, hearing his
- 7:03voice helps us figure out what it means where Jesus is asking
- 7:10us to deny ourselves. And then after Lent, we're going
- 7:14to jump into a series on spiritual gifts and, and the
- 7:20Holy Spirit and what it means to not just hear from God, but to
- 7:27live in the gifts and the power and the authority that God has
- 7:33given us as his people. And so I'm excited about that
- 7:38because I think a lot of times we talk about volunteering for
- 7:43the church and getting people to serve within the church.
- 7:46And you know, we need you because we need a warm body to
- 7:49fill that role. And and that's.
- 7:51We accept cold ones too, not necessarily dead.
- 7:57There's a lot of people that are very cold.
- 7:58Well, that's true, that's true. But how much better to be able
- 8:02to say, all right, let's help you figure out what the gifts
- 8:08God has given to you, not just like the natural gifts, as
- 8:12important as they are. And then that plays a role, not
- 8:15just the skills you've picked up over life, but where has God
- 8:19specifically gifted you spiritually so that the church
- 8:25can be built up and the believers can be equipped to do
- 8:28the ministry that God has called us to do, like it says in
- 8:31Ephesians 4. And and I think when we can do
- 8:36that, when we can operate as the church the way God intended for
- 8:42us to goes better, we can live into what he's called us to as a
- 8:46church more. We can be who he's called us to
- 8:50be more. Listen, I I think that's going
- 8:52to be a growing process. I don't think in the six or
- 8:58eight or ten week series, we're going to Plumb the depths of
- 9:02what that means and have it all figured out.
- 9:06I think there's going to need to be some grace in there as as
- 9:11people figure it out, as people learn how to operate in their
- 9:15spiritual gifts, because that's not something that you just wake
- 9:19up 1 morning. It's like a light switch flipped
- 9:21on. No, it is kind of similar to
- 9:24hearing God, right? It's because it's flowing out of
- 9:28a relationship. That relationship has to
- 9:31develop, right? God has to develop the, the
- 9:35character within us that can hold those things, right?
- 9:41The the church gets into trouble when people's gifting outpaces
- 9:46their character development. And and that's where a lot of
- 9:52pastors run into trouble because they focus so much on developing
- 9:56the skills, or maybe they've clearly been given some
- 9:59spiritual gifts, but they spend more time working on those
- 10:03focusing on those things than they do on their own
- 10:06relationship with God, on their own character development.
- 10:10And they get to a point where, you know, just tips the scales
- 10:14and it's unhealthy. Yeah.
- 10:18So that's a very long answer. Perfect, we need to fill space.
- 10:24A very long answer about what the vision is about, but I hope
- 10:27those pieces kind of help people see where we're headed and why.
- 10:32And they're not so distinct from each other as they might seem on
- 10:38the surface, right? I, I think the hearing God is
- 10:42key to the self denial. And I think the self denial is
- 10:45key to being the kind of people that God can entrust with his
- 10:49power. Yeah.
- 10:51What was the quote you used this Sunday about like the importance
- 10:54of hearing God? I can't remember.
- 10:57He had a couple quotes. Two of them, yeah.
- 11:00One from Pete Gregg and one from Dallas Willard.
- 11:02Do the Pete Gregg one. No, I'm not talking about the
- 11:05dangerous one. Yeah, that quote from early on
- 11:10in the book How to Hear God, a Simple Guide for Normal People,
- 11:14says learning to hear God's voice, his Word and His whisper
- 11:19is the single most important thing you will ever learn to do.
- 11:23I'm not exaggerating. Hearing God is not peripheral.
- 11:26It is integral to human history. Neither is it an optional extra
- 11:31for wild eyed Mystics and those who happen to be spiritually
- 11:35inclined. Hearing God is essential to the
- 11:38very purpose for which you and I were made.
- 11:41Without it, everything falls apart.
- 11:45How have you seen that quote bear truth in your own life?
- 11:52Gosh, in so many ways, life is better when I listen to God.
- 11:59It's not always easier, but it's always better.
- 12:04I mean, it's kind of like that story I shared at the end of my
- 12:08sermon on Sunday about the meeting and the PT and
- 12:12oversleeping. And, you know, was it easier to
- 12:17make that choice? No, not necessarily.
- 12:20But was it better because it aligned with what God was
- 12:24inviting me into? Absolutely.
- 12:27Have these last few days since that meeting been better?
- 12:31Probably because in the midst of it, I was able to continue to
- 12:36deepen that relationship with God, Right.
- 12:40So many times I think we, we hear from God and it's like the
- 12:45answer we don't like on the Magic 8 ball.
- 12:48So we don't do it and we shake it up hoping it'll come out
- 12:52different and it doesn't. And then we wonder why we stop
- 12:55hearing from God when the reality is, if in a
- 12:59relationship, if I share something with you and ask you
- 13:04to do something or, you know, share something and you don't
- 13:10actually do anything with that information or that request,
- 13:15well, my, my trust in you is going to diminish.
- 13:20So it's always better. And I think this year, one of
- 13:23the things I'm learning, which seems like a no brainer and
- 13:28seems like something that has a almost 42 year old pastor who's
- 13:34been in ministry for, you know, a couple decades now.
- 13:39You would think that I would have learned, but I really feel
- 13:43like one of the things God's working on in me this year is
- 13:48trust. You know, not just belief, not
- 13:53just knowing all the right things, not just assenting to
- 13:58all the right things, but actually trusting, actually
- 14:02putting the weight of my being, of my life, of my choices on to
- 14:07who I know God to be and how he's asking me to respond.
- 14:14And so a couple of the verses that have just been going
- 14:17through my heart and mind last week or two come from Psalm 20,
- 14:23verse 7, where it says some trust in chariot, some in
- 14:27horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
- 14:31And then the second one comes from Isaiah, Isaiah 26.
- 14:36You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast
- 14:41because they trust in You. Yes, just that idea of, of
- 14:45trusting God, not myself, not my own abilities, not even the
- 14:52people around me, but trusting God to do what God has said he's
- 14:56going to do. And being steadfast in that
- 15:00trust. And steadfast just means, you
- 15:03know, constant and consistent and persistent in that trust.
- 15:10That's where we find peace. I know the past couple of years
- 15:15you've had like a word of the year that you feel like God's
- 15:19put on your. Heart that it's trust for this
- 15:22year. OK.
- 15:22And those are the 2 verses that he led me.
- 15:26I know there's a bonus one or if trust was the bonus one and.
- 15:31Something else. That's one of the things I was
- 15:32feeling kind of frustrated. It's too strong, but somewhere
- 15:36in that direction was because I didn't feel like I had heard a
- 15:41word for this year. Somewhere I was struggling to
- 15:43know what this first sermon series was going to be.
- 15:46There is this 6 week gap in my. Sermon plan.
- 15:50And I hate that. I hate that.
- 15:54But it was just in the last week or so that these verses came to
- 15:59my mind. And this invitation to trust,
- 16:02even on Friday was kind of reiterated.
- 16:05And so holding on to that for this year and excited to see
- 16:11what God is going to do might be a little strong.
- 16:14I'd say it's it's. Hopeful, yeah, to see how God is
- 16:18going to work in the midst of that and with with that kind of
- 16:22framework in mind. Yeah, almost.
- 16:25I hate how the last person used this word, but trepidation of
- 16:31like the nervous anticipation because similar to like, oh, if
- 16:37you pray for patience, God's going to provide things that
- 16:41require a lot of. Patience.
- 16:42Been there. Done that and in regards to
- 16:46trust that there's probably going to be some big things in
- 16:50which require a lot of trust and so I I the hope and also excited
- 16:58to see how God uses those areas in which you entrust him maybe
- 17:03not enjoy the process in which you're called to do it.
- 17:07But it'll be better. For sure, it always is, even if
- 17:11we don't see the immediate results of that trust.
- 17:16Well, that's our conversation for today, but that doesn't mean
- 17:19the conversation is over. We'd love to hear your thoughts
- 17:22on these topics as well. To ask a question about anything
- 17:25we've discussed in this episode or to join the conversation, you
- 17:28can head over to fumccollingswood.org/podcast.
- 17:33Thanks for being part of this conversation.
