- 0:40Welcome back to a hamster with the blunt, penknife a doctor who
- 0:44commentary podcast and it's me Dylan.
- 0:47I'm here again with Joe, who can't be bothered to do is
- 0:49intros anymore. I'll tell you very lazy today.
- 0:53It is a facts differently, though.
- 0:55I've just made an appearance on fantastic podcast called Doctor
- 1:00Who too hot for TV. Oh really any good any good
- 1:03whatsoever? Bat goes into all of the
- 1:07minutiae of 90s Doctor Who What 90s Doctor Who I hear?
- 1:11You ask a lot of dimensions in time in the TV movie, all the
- 1:16fabulous spin offeree. You know, you never guess what?
- 1:19The host made me watch. What did he make it host of us.
- 1:23What did the host make you a story?
- 1:25Was it something exciting like a bit as a gracious or maybe
- 1:29search at science starring Sylvester McCoy other schools
- 1:32program better than all of those put together?
- 1:35It was could it possibly be Bill bags is probe When to die.
- 1:43Remember the time I got a bone to pick with you, I'll ask you
- 1:49on my podcast to talk about is takes you away a faggot and I
- 1:55literally bought you in to talk about the dregs of Doctor Who
- 1:58spin-off Ferrari, but you will come back and do something that
- 2:02you are actually love and want to talk about it.
- 2:03But you and Mark are the only people stupid enough to say yes
- 2:08to that. Boy, we laughs, I'm doing, but
- 2:13obviously the nature of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey, who
- 2:15knows? Which one of these will come out
- 2:17first. They might be out on the same
- 2:19day, but all they might be six months apart, so we'll never
- 2:22know. So, that's either just out or
- 2:24coming out soon or was out six months ago.
- 2:27You talked about this commentary on that one.
- 2:29We didn't know. We'll have to go back and record
- 2:31something to throw in. Well, look, I've just dropped
- 2:36what we're here to talk about today.
- 2:38It takes your choice and they Technically, the penultimate
- 2:41episode of series, 11 of dogs, you know, you and I talked about
- 2:46demons in the Punjab earlier earlier this year.
- 2:49Was that last year? It was, it was early this year.
- 2:52I think it wasn't so long ago, was it and had a marvelous time
- 2:55talking about that. And I did ask you in that will
- 2:58sort of your opinion, Jodie Whittaker on this season.
- 3:05Was the show sort of turning a corner for you at this point
- 3:08because I know you had a bit of not, not like an issue, still
- 3:11enjoying it. But you have some reservations.
- 3:15Yeah, exactly. So I enjoyed the first run of
- 3:19Jody episodes but I wasn't Blown Away by them have since gone
- 3:22back to them and learn to love them and enjoy them a different
- 3:24way, but it takes you away was very much like our this is the
- 3:27new take on Doctor Who I wanted. I wanted Christian ought to come
- 3:31in and do something I hadn't really seen before and arguably.
- 3:34Actually done that with things like Demons of the Punjab.
- 3:36And Rosa, I just hadn't quite refocused in on his vision of
- 3:40Doctor Who, but it takes you away.
- 3:42I think remains a unique contribution to the doctor who
- 3:46can. And I can't think of a story
- 3:47that's anywhere in any era of Doctor Who that's remotely
- 3:51similar. And I think it's fantastic for a
- 3:53show, that's 57 years old, at the point of this is broadcast,
- 3:57probably even young that maybe 55, whatever, but it's still
- 4:01traveling new ground and doing a new Tori and I just, I was blown
- 4:05away by it and you know what you said there about, it being
- 4:09unique, it's also completely continuity free.
- 4:12Yeah, as far as I can, remember at the only concern that comes
- 4:15in is from this season, which is, yeah, right.
- 4:19But, like, the sexually narratively visually.
- 4:23I think it's, I don't think there's another Doctor Who story
- 4:26like this. I know there aren't many Doctor
- 4:29Who stories you can say that about.
- 4:31Yeah, exactly. And it's I think, In years to
- 4:35come people really start to when they as the really as people
- 4:38reassess this season. And this error, I think they saw
- 4:42suddenly they shoot up the polls this like I think I'll become a
- 4:44bit of an all-time classic. I wonder if awesome 55 didn't
- 4:49damage. Ed hyams reputation a little bit
- 4:54because people just seem to talk about that when it comes to
- 4:57read. However, yeah the vitriol
- 4:58towards the episode which I remember sitting there going.
- 5:01Well that was quite fun idroid those Yay fun.
- 5:04Isn't it a bit too? Is energetic.
- 5:07I'll sign it said I sat there and I thought, oh, that was a
- 5:12lot of fun. Great sort of felt like an 80s
- 5:15Doctor Who but done that like, okay, the old woman wasn't most
- 5:19fantastic actress. But there are many Doctor Who
- 5:22stories out there that don't have a the somebody, let in the
- 5:25cast and, including some Classics, and the monsters look
- 5:29great. And I just, and okay, the speech
- 5:32at the end was a bit on the nose but not, Too much.
- 5:35And then I will add online and I was like, oh my God, this
- 5:38episode appears to have committed a war crime, something
- 5:41like that. I found the one person you know
- 5:44people Amber and yeah, story to death own.
- 5:47I didn't get a word in, he breathlessly spoke for two hours
- 5:52about while from 55 was his favorite new series episode.
- 5:56It's amazing. And I think and it goes to show
- 5:58every episode has their fans. And I just bloody, I love that
- 6:03episode of Quite a lot and I'm glad that he really loves it.
- 6:07Where's Mark Dylan Dylan? Yeah.
- 6:17Okay so for once I've actually written those when episode
- 6:22because I think there's a lot to discuss here I'm going to read a
- 6:26little something out and I want you to tell me if I'm completely
- 6:30off the boil it. Yeah well I think in Those of a
- 6:35story that evolves in a very short space of time, this covers
- 6:41a lot of ground and I'll probably forget to mention any
- 6:44of this while we're watching the thing.
- 6:46So, as far as I can see, this starts off as like a beautifully
- 6:49filmed suspenseful horror movie, that's what it feels like at the
- 6:51beginning. Yeah.
- 6:54Then it becomes like a weird Creature Feature.
- 6:56When you go into the endzone yeah then it steps into like
- 7:00conceptual Science Fiction with a hole.
- 7:04Thing of the solid tracks and the two universities then is the
- 7:08like a heartbreaking character drama as Like A Treatise on
- 7:13Grief. And then finally, it becomes
- 7:17this massive endorsement of the doctors, exploration of the
- 7:20universe, like, sort of suggesting that there are always
- 7:24new thing and that's in 50 minutes.
- 7:27I know, you're absolutely right. It kind of nails all these
- 7:30different themes and ideas and Concepts and I think it It's
- 7:34them all fantastically and that's what they are jarring,
- 7:40differences between the three. You know, that sort of Nordic
- 7:44horror. Yeah.
- 7:45Tapping into things. Like, I'm thinking of things,
- 7:48like, sort of Wrong Turn those sort of leafy wet horror movies,
- 7:52you have out on location. Yeah.
- 7:54And then there's sort of the whole middle bit with ribbons.
- 7:56That's like a 1980s Creature Feature, maybe like Hellraiser
- 8:00or or either or something like that or it's got white.
- 8:04It's like Pan's Labyrinth and things like that.
- 8:06It's all weavin Labyrinth and if it was a labyrinth in the title
- 8:11and then I feel like it goes into sort of weird Sapphire and
- 8:14seal store space where everything's kind of still and
- 8:17quiet. And then it's doing that
- 8:20wonderful sort of knew who thing of tugging at your heart strings
- 8:24as well. It's just, it's just, it's just
- 8:27it's Unique. I would love to see more from Ed
- 8:31Hime. I think I know as we said often.
- 8:34Five gets solid derided in this gets a bit overlooked that, I
- 8:37think he's a fresh voice in the Doctor Who world that is much
- 8:41needed. And I would love to see him come
- 8:43back and do an episode or two in his recent interview in a
- 8:48convention. Chris chibnall do they like an
- 8:50audio interview for Radio free skaro did?
- 8:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:53I did was fantastic drops. That hiring was supposed to
- 8:56write an episode for the third season.
- 9:00Yeah, I think the neighbors hell was as well.
- 9:03Yeah, he was here. Really sad because that's too
- 9:05great names. I wonder whether those scripts
- 9:08exist or whether it's just outlines but it would love to
- 9:11see when the we die of a bit more into this series of sort of
- 9:16vermin archive point of view. I hope that we get to find that
- 9:19the could have been because this even from quite a lot of the new
- 9:23series very little ever leaks out about the what they were
- 9:26going to do. Or yeah.
- 9:28That's what that last one that was so unique because he was
- 9:31talking about the behind the scenes.
- 9:32He says that him Knifehead were bashing out his script for
- 9:36serious 13, like the just the bare bones of it and he went to
- 9:40the Loo and he got a message about like this is the pandemic
- 9:45is really serious. This is happening.
- 9:47We can all be stuck at home and they went back into the room and
- 9:50said to find. This is going to make it to the
- 9:52screen. I'm really sorry.
- 9:54Yeah. It's I mean the could have been
- 9:57to the doctor who was just as fascinating as the of what we
- 10:00actually get but I think there's always that thing.
- 10:04Of all it, you know, for years. People thought the original
- 10:07season 20 was at 22 or 23 season 23 would have been bad because
- 10:12it had all these nostalgic elements.
- 10:14And then when you finally start to hear the audio adaptations of
- 10:18those scripture like, oh, actually maybe try all the time
- 10:20or was a better safer option. You leave mission to Magnus and
- 10:24the ultimate Evil alone audio for the out, be evil.
- 10:29I didn't get through it. I did about 20 minutes of it and
- 10:31I was like, this isn't for me, it takes Not for me to abandon
- 10:35sorry. Interminable.
- 10:38What a last question in to ask you before we go in, you said to
- 10:43me in demons in the Punjab that you fought Doctor Who had been
- 10:47sort of tailored to the Sunday night Slaughter.
- 10:51So the pace with a little slower, it looked beautiful at
- 10:55the production value had gone up.
- 10:58Just think this is a really good example of that.
- 11:00This episode I do and it's weirdly in a nostalgic.
- 11:04Kwai it reminds me of Sunday evenings as a kid with like
- 11:07Narnia and five children in it and things like that.
- 11:10It's it's not the same thing, it's but it's sort of
- 11:14thematically that kind of else world.
- 11:17The Fantasy Realm that you want as a kid before.
- 11:21You know, you've got to go to bed and then go to school the
- 11:23next day and I hope that in 10 15 years time, I'm listening to
- 11:28some podcast by someone who was seven years old when this came
- 11:31out and they're taught. They talk about what?
- 11:34Imprinted left on their on their childhoods because I think it is
- 11:38prime Sunday, teatime fantasy. I am determined to because I'll
- 11:45find this. Whenever I do a Jodie, Whittaker
- 11:47story, there's always a conversation about well why
- 11:50don't people like this era, you know, rather than just a
- 11:53celebration of the episode itself.
- 11:55So I'm going to go to or going to say this is offering the tide
- 11:58of might be turning a little bit already because that doomsday
- 12:03trailer. Dropped and regardless of what
- 12:06my opinion is. I think they're doing a good
- 12:07thing, multimedia, appealing to kids all of this but you know
- 12:10the vitriolic reaction against that people are start going.
- 12:15Remember the good old days of it.
- 12:16Takes you away, you know, you know, the Doctor Who show the
- 12:22Australian podcast that I've been on there and they've got on
- 12:25my podcast and they're, they're lovely guys.
- 12:28But the Jodie Whittaker really didn't work for them as a whole,
- 12:32they just didn't enjoy it. Not They're not in any way sort
- 12:35of vitriolic or horrible about anything.
- 12:37It just doesn't work for them, which is fair enough.
- 12:38The rear is adopted was meant for me, they did what they
- 12:41called, the ultimate Jodie, Whittaker cold, take the other
- 12:43day where they just pick 5 episode each random and went
- 12:47back to them and it's an interesting hearing them discuss
- 12:51them now. And going to now it's not the
- 12:53most important bit of Doctor Who ever because it's on, you know,
- 12:55it's the latest bit of Doctor Who and just how they sort of,
- 12:59even the ones that they were old colder on before.
- 13:01Like so actually, they found a lot more.
- 13:04To enjoy and Dave on their even says like he goes I think this
- 13:07era of Doctor Who is going to age very very well I agree yeah
- 13:12which five I'm so intrigued. Oh I can't remember but it was
- 13:15it was a good mix that but from the first to the first three
- 13:19suit first to, I can't remember but that it was a good mix.
- 13:23They did 58. So 10 in total and it's well
- 13:25worth a listen. Especially if there's anybody
- 13:27out there who doesn't particularly like that era, or
- 13:30didn't like it the first time around like hearing those guys
- 13:33sort of Not completely change their opinions, they still have
- 13:35certain issues but it's just a really good lesson of like, are
- 13:41going back to something for you thought you didn't like, which
- 13:43doctor who pass Doctor, Who fans?
- 13:44We do all the time. For me, it's a bit.
- 13:47Like, I always felt the Peter Davison era.
- 13:50A lot of people were quite cold on that when it first happened
- 13:52but now retrospectively people love it or a lot of younger fans
- 13:57talking about my trial of a Time Lord, when that came out on
- 13:59Blu-ray and just the love it got.
- 14:02So I just I think You will dis, this will only get better in the
- 14:07estimation of fans not not worse and we already loved it.
- 14:11So where exactly is your position there?
- 14:13Yeah, so so, say right, well, I haven't heard it out yet but I
- 14:16would follow you anywhere Dylan race or I'm topic, I'm going to
- 14:19head over there and listen to that one.
- 14:21She want what episode I did? One about Dennis Spooner, the
- 14:25work of Dennis Spooner. I love.
- 14:28Spooning right up there. I'll tell you where I'm going to
- 14:32follow you now to Norway. We are fantastic or probably
- 14:35wails. I think it is a big green
- 14:39screen. Well tunnel the same.
- 14:42Okay, well, you want to count as in, I will keratin in 321 play.
- 14:51I will press the wrong box. Well, mine's gone.
- 14:53Wrong as well. Did they work?
- 14:57Am I on? I mean, I mean, the type are
- 15:01you, are you? Are we
- 15:16now start with a slight criticism?
- 15:19I do miss the opening. Like the, the opening sequences,
- 15:23like I know, chipmunk doesn't do them all the time.
- 15:25I do prefer a pre credits little sting me too.
- 15:29Yeah. But that's a minor criticism
- 15:32for. What's this a fantastic story
- 15:34that you know I'd rather open with that or more and more than
- 15:37the titles and music the theme tune Remain.
- 15:45The biggest misfire from for the new series for me, they're just
- 15:51terrible now. We're missing Jody eating some
- 15:54soil here. And this is a prime example of
- 15:57when people go off. She's not very doctor.
- 15:59It's like The matching Sylvester Mccoy, David Tennant, Tom Baker,
- 16:04doing this scene and acting, it just as well.
- 16:07It's such a doctor. Anything, to do to be able to
- 16:09tell all about where they are from.
- 16:12Putting a bit of soil, in their mouth.
- 16:13I'm perfectly convinced. Now, you tell me if I'm wrong, I
- 16:17think this is one of the best new series episodes for the
- 16:22doctor whether that's either a woman and which I think Ed.
- 16:26Hi, I'm absolutely knows how to characterize Jodie Whittaker.
- 16:30In this and in orphan 55 he's one of the few writers.
- 16:34The other ones, who wrote, dear, TT, and the lady of the Angels
- 16:38or can't remember the name, but Abby's fantastic as well.
- 16:42Like so people just get a bang on.
- 16:48She not only not only she in soil here but immediately she
- 16:53said she's got a detective hat on when she goes towards the
- 16:57cottage and she's like, look taking in all the details.
- 17:00She's like innocently Humane with Hannah in a minute, she's
- 17:03on the hunt for the monster straight away.
- 17:05I mean, this is that's five minutes, it's a very proactive
- 17:08doctor story. It's the sort of thing that
- 17:11people criticize the Christopher Eccleston story for the doctor,
- 17:14not playing such a proactive part in the stories.
- 17:18And I wonder how much people would feel differently.
- 17:22If it was Christopher Eccleston in the role, what I will say is,
- 17:24I prefer Jody to Christopher Eccleston was the doctor.
- 17:27I think my second favorite, you know, Jody of all the doctors
- 17:31are of the new series of the new series one's mine, too.
- 17:35I'm working out. The classics are I think I love
- 17:39them all too. So who's your number one tenant?
- 17:45And that's just because I think it's, because I was riding that
- 17:47wave with him and I recognize that he is not the strongest
- 17:51actor of all of the new series doctors.
- 17:54But just had whatever it is. He had it stilled, they return.
- 17:58Yeah, - Peter Capaldi. It goes compelled and even
- 18:02Whitaker, I think. And I can see why.
- 18:05What a wise want me to called is probably the best actor to have
- 18:08ever played. The dogs are absolutely?
- 18:10Who's the worst actor to her play the doctor?
- 18:14That's, that's a horrible question and I'm probably going
- 18:17to say Arabella we're in the know it's it's I think is
- 18:22probably an I mean in terms of acting now I think it's probably
- 18:27Sylvester McCoy now. It's Lynch.
- 18:29I think you're yeah, he's Limited in range, but, you know,
- 18:33if I was looking at someone's work out, Side of Doctor Who the
- 18:36worst actor to play Doctor, Who would be?
- 18:38It would probably be Tom Baker, but he's just perfect for Doctor
- 18:44Who, but he is some point during Doctor Who he forgets, how to
- 18:49act, but I did, I went on to play Sherlock Holmes and I did
- 18:53it as Doctor Who I went on to do Shakespeare, as Doctor Who
- 18:57people getting very annoyed with me on the stage?
- 19:02Can I just point out Graham and his Jesus.
- 19:05Oh but I also wonder have this been the first episode.
- 19:12I don't wouldn't have been but it had this been the first
- 19:14episode of a series whether people would have suddenly gone.
- 19:18Oh I really love this. New version of Doctor Who I know
- 19:21you wouldn't have had the whole interview or the second episode.
- 19:23Maybe if it had jumped from woman who fell to Earth to this,
- 19:27whether people that are K, I get this new take on Doctor Who I'm.
- 19:30Therefore, if I also had a said, this to you before, I also think
- 19:33what a better better finale. The Run score of Carlos.
- 19:37So I watch this after you said that in Davis and Punjab comment
- 19:41rate and asking is bang-on. I think sort of.
- 19:46It gives the doctor massive hero moment at the end.
- 19:50Yeah, but then it has lots of emotional payoff for the
- 19:52regulars as well. Yeah, because you get gray and
- 19:55being called, Granddad by Ryan. You get to we re meet Grace and
- 20:01it is, it's a it's a thematic finale.
- 20:05Rather than like a story finale, you know, it's all went to the
- 20:09character. There's three lines of the
- 20:10characters that would make it this a great finale, but instead
- 20:14they're getting and you do entice me, because now the
- 20:16thought of this of of it being woman who fell to work, it takes
- 20:19you away Rosa. That would be a one-two-three
- 20:22punch right in the season. Yeah, but it's not it's the way
- 20:27it is. And, you know, I've been brave
- 20:33enough to do it yet. Why I think we should do it one
- 20:36day. I'm not as down on it as other
- 20:39people, it is deeply flawed, but I do think it's got as positive
- 20:42so maybe once we've done flux, we can jump back into that.
- 20:46Okay? My Jodie Whittaker
- 20:47Consciousness, it's wonderful. I love to hear you.
- 20:51Do you always keep me on my toes?
- 20:53You're the only one that's references more obscure than me.
- 20:56It's what I'm here for you as well as well as all the types of
- 21:01changes in genre and tone and how the episode Looks I really
- 21:06like as well. There's a lot of relationships
- 21:08in play in this one. Yeah, you've got that really
- 21:12quite troubling. But interesting relationship
- 21:15between Hannah and her dad's, yeah.
- 21:19Now come in for a bit of criticism, I think not.
- 21:22This is a classic example of Doctor Who fans, not watching
- 21:26any other television, because how many other television shows
- 21:29are there? Where people have been terrible
- 21:31parents or have done things? Stupid things in the Name of
- 21:35grief and we praised it as high drama and you know what, not
- 21:39all. Dads are great dads.
- 21:40Imperfect people and I know people with two dads are a
- 21:43complete fucking assholes and any like look, so because she
- 21:47calls him out at the end, she says Dad, you're not well, yeah,
- 21:52he's grieving for his wife and he's made some terrible
- 21:54decisions. He is mentally.
- 21:56He has mental health problems. And that's a big, an interesting
- 22:00subject to take like otherwise. The other side of it is you've
- 22:03got night terrors and it's Just some guy who really needs to
- 22:07love his, his adopted alien sun, or whatever it is, it's like
- 22:11imperfect characters are a better representation of the
- 22:15world than, you know, a lot of characters in.
- 22:18I don't know if the caretaker or something like that.
- 22:21I think a lot of people just jump on this as being an
- 22:23abandonment story but I think that's what the letter for here.
- 22:27Is that he can't? He can't be her dad because he's
- 22:32trapped animal, and he's there. And it's that whole thing about
- 22:35If you could be with the person you love that you lost.
- 22:38Would you make that choice? Yeah, you probably would?
- 22:41Yeah, absolutely. And I think it's a really
- 22:44interesting says it's some very interesting things about grief
- 22:47and it takes, you know, Bryant know Brian.
- 22:51Graham goes into that, that alternative reality.
- 22:54And he sees the person, he loves the most there and it's like,
- 22:58yeah, you would, you would fight for that and it's only because
- 23:01of the influence of the Doctor Who is the very sort of impetus
- 23:03of the whole thing he goes. Actually, no, it's not that
- 23:06person. You don't like, this is not what
- 23:08you want. You can't live in your own with
- 23:10the globe. Depressed, fantasy for the rest
- 23:12of your life. And he's doing it again and eat
- 23:15blood and Bradley. Walsh are said this, in demons,
- 23:18in the Punjab, stealing them. He's gone on about, you know,
- 23:21having a lark and gone on about we and things like this.
- 23:24And then right at the end, he breaks your fucking heart.
- 23:26It's videos to show and the bit where he goes, oh, no, don't do
- 23:30this to me when he realizes who it is.
- 23:34He's, he's brilliant. Like they're all of the fam are
- 23:38brilliant, but like he is, he is the one that as you say, you
- 23:43turns like that and he's breaking your heart again, and
- 23:47he does lovely boats and as well, when toasting calls and
- 23:49Granddad. He'll IR K.
- 23:51Where we've landed there, that's another relationship in play
- 23:54here. And there's brilliant payoff for
- 23:56that. At the end of the episode, which
- 23:58ties into the season, my favorite relationship, and we'll
- 24:01get there later on. It's The doctor and the other
- 24:05Universe. Oh, amazing.
- 24:07I think today is one of my favorite ever.
- 24:10Doctor has no more so because it, irritates them back out of
- 24:15so many people. Yeah, that I love the production
- 24:18design of this cabin as well with its triangles and obviously
- 24:22and circles. And it's like it's just clever
- 24:25sort of design that makes you a go, the something off here but
- 24:29also go we're in a different country.
- 24:31It's a different architecture. Even if we are in a forest in
- 24:34South Wales somewhere it's just they can't think of another
- 24:39Doctor Who story that does architecture in that way in the
- 24:4321st century everybody else and just have aren't so Cabin in the
- 24:46Woods. It looks like a cabin or trying
- 24:48to make it look real but not the sort of you know, your living
- 24:52room or your you know. Yeah.
- 24:54Not like the living rooms in the probe went to die that we've
- 24:58just watched The Dreadful drapes across the door.
- 25:03Yeah, that's sofas. But this topic idea as well,
- 25:07we're leaving in sort of c.s. Lewis here, aren't we?
- 25:10All yes. Stepping into another world by
- 25:12going through the mirror or wardrobe.
- 25:16Yeah, and it's such a fantastic fascinating idea and you can
- 25:18imagine a kids like eight years old just like playing this with
- 25:22their their mates, that there you go, through the mirror and
- 25:25then you're in this weird, the never wear of play elsewhere of
- 25:29places. It's just a phenomenal idea.
- 25:32And what I love about this, there's a mystery and you don't
- 25:36know where this mystery is going.
- 25:37You're the first time you're watching it, you're sat there on
- 25:39the edge of your seat going. Are you start to think?
- 25:41Oh there's a monster in the woods whatever.
- 25:43But it's not, it's a darker. Are more twisty turny story than
- 25:48I think anybody was expecting. I genuinely think it's like the
- 25:51Zenith of Doctor Who story telling them what the show can
- 25:54do in terms of unpredictability? Yeah, I remember as I watch this
- 25:59as it went out, I was like, you know, for once I have a clue
- 26:02where this is going to wait and it's so it's so easily could
- 26:08have ended even with all those twists and turns and then we
- 26:10will come to the Frog later, but there's always that temptation
- 26:13to put a ship monster there or It's doubtful rocks, or
- 26:16something like that, or it's the alone Cyberman or something like
- 26:19that, but they go for something so much more original and
- 26:25stupid, and Brilliant, and fantastic and silly.
- 26:28It's all those things. The doctor who can be like as
- 26:31you say the tonal shifts and from like abject horror to sort
- 26:35of like something ridiculous, is he Doctor Who?
- 26:40And I feel like now what we step into the interzone we're sort of
- 26:42stepping into 80s who now the sort of Yeah, video nasty,
- 26:46horrors of 80s who you know, not too far away from.
- 26:50I mean, a world away in execution from sort of those
- 26:54weird traps and corridors Avengers anvar.
- 26:56Also you know, mist and darkness and nasty things lurking around
- 27:01every corner. Absolutely.
- 27:03I mean it's a phenomenal. It's a phenomenal sort of shift
- 27:07in tone that you get but at there's somehow it doesn't feel
- 27:10jarring and then you get ribbons.
- 27:13Who is Ghoulish to look at. Oh my God yes of fabulously
- 27:19funny performance. Yeah from Kevin Alton obviously
- 27:23trivia. Where's Kevin Eldon appeared in
- 27:25the Doctor Who Universe before sit probe time to die?
- 27:29No it's not. He's a he's a companion, you
- 27:34know, Kevin Alton, he plays Aunt in Amman timoney, in death,
- 27:39comes to time who is the perfect companion that the doctor is
- 27:42designed as a sort of robot to travel with him.
- 27:44This is So our content, we come to your podcast for Dylan.
- 27:50Well, I'll just kind of says hi, but I think he's perfect in
- 27:55this. Oh, he's absolutely brilliant.
- 27:58I like it gives a fantastic performance.
- 28:00I want to see those deleted scenes with the other.
- 28:01They cast the tallest man in Britain.
- 28:03To play this weird. Sort of the pictures I've taken
- 28:06of it. Look, absolutely astonishing.
- 28:08So I don't know why they didn't take time.
- 28:11Maybe I'm it must be time. They must have shot too much
- 28:13material because it doesn't feel like there's Subplot that's
- 28:16missing like you all like you know like in Legend of the sea
- 28:19Devils where you like, oh someone's cut 10, 15 minutes out
- 28:22of this. Quite obviously, it doesn't feel
- 28:25like this is missing anything so it's I'm sure it was timing
- 28:29given a cover so much, ground is quite sad.
- 28:31A is not particularly fast paced this.
- 28:35I don't feel like anything's rushed, no, but I guess in the
- 28:38edit that it was more about, we want to build the tension,
- 28:41rather than cramming, loads of ideas, and an additional
- 28:43character in. Didn't the art design here, it's
- 28:48fantastic. It is amazingly good.
- 28:51And I feel like, you know, in the mafia era we have that sort
- 28:54of weird, dark Source, I'm sci-fi environment.
- 28:59And we've totally pushed away from that in series 11 and we've
- 29:02gone for bit more sort of traditional settings and sort of
- 29:06beautiful imagery. And this is a nice reminder of
- 29:08that but just done it new house style.
- 29:11Yeah, but it gained its that the choice of the color Purple such
- 29:16a simple one but it just gives it this otherworldly different
- 29:22look to anything that was done in the Moffett era.
- 29:25Like the let what other stories do you associate with purple.
- 29:29I think it's probably the sontaran stratagem, which isn't
- 29:31sure isn't the best directed version of Doctor Who, or even a
- 29:35buddy. It's competent.
- 29:37But it's it's a poppy version of purple.
- 29:40Whereas this is like, Oh no, you're in a dark, you're at you,
- 29:43in an alien environment. Nice.
- 29:45Purples and yellows and us on tax and they don't work
- 29:48together. It's weird.
- 29:49This is yeah. You know what?
- 29:52Oh, he does remind me of Freddy Krueger.
- 29:53Look at his face. It's not sort of horrible
- 29:56scarred face. It's true.
- 29:58And this is also, it's a competent show because you can't
- 30:01imagine in 2005 Russell T, Davies putting in a character
- 30:04like this because it's too gruesome like it's a gruesome
- 30:08terrifying thing that may be worried about going too far but
- 30:12it works perfectly on your Sunday night version of this.
- 30:15Just an incidental character, but is Unforgettable, Joe
- 30:19Wallace. And I love is when it goes
- 30:21below, ribbons to miss to find missing Daddy that way.
- 30:26So, fractured speech that I like from seal, I like the way he
- 30:30talks about the tubular a lot deliver, allow please, you're
- 30:36not the first person to say that to know about, I'm not be the
- 30:39last, but I do love the fact that he's obsessed with the
- 30:44sonic screwdriver. His greed to go and get it is
- 30:47what polishes in here. Well, but I love this weird that
- 30:51the interzone at this world that he's just always been there and
- 30:55doesn't really know anything different and there is part I
- 30:59think by losing the other character.
- 31:01And again, we don't know what the storyline most, it's even
- 31:05weirder that is he there alone? Is he part of a community.
- 31:07How many people pass through here?
- 31:09Is to see live here and then everybody else that was just
- 31:12random strangers as the appears. There's a whole Doctor Who
- 31:15Justin the into Zone, let alone literally just going to say,
- 31:18well, I think there's a doctor who hold on to have sewed for
- 31:20every setting we get yeah, yeah, it is all meshed into this one.
- 31:26Episode is another thing that makes this so unique about the
- 31:29moths are their terrifying. It's so scary on that flash mobs
- 31:34that just yeah brilliant idea it's doing weirdly to give it
- 31:38like a classic series comparison.
- 31:41It's doing what Bob Baker and Dave Martin always do which is
- 31:44their story Stories always have sort of three quite different
- 31:47locations, because it's a way of moving the dragon armor on and
- 31:50keeping the story, exciting over six weeks or whatever or four
- 31:54weeks. But here, they're doing it all
- 31:55in 50 minutes. Now, we've got more
- 31:57successfully, we've got money to put it on the screen, you know.
- 32:01Exactly and Doctor Who is a challenging show to make, but
- 32:05this iteration of Doctor Who is not from what I understand is
- 32:10not a hugely expensive version of Doctor Who or indeed
- 32:14television. Pat to say something like, even
- 32:16his dark materials I believe that around this time in the
- 32:22Moffett area, you're looking at about 3 million an episode.
- 32:25And obviously sometimes they take that money and spent two
- 32:27million on one and four million on another.
- 32:29That's not a lot of money to make television, and I know it
- 32:32sounds like a lot, but when you imagine, there's probably 100
- 32:36120 people working on this thing.
- 32:38And you're paying all their wages, you're paying the rent on
- 32:40the studio, you've got to pay someone to design the sets that
- 32:43it's like or all of this cost money.
- 32:45Oh so it doesn't get you very far.
- 32:47It'll be interesting to see now the budget gone up to whatever
- 32:50it has how much extra value.you. How much more do you see on
- 32:55screen? It's worth mentioning that an
- 32:58entire McCoy season back in the 80s, had a million pounds per.
- 33:03So the fact that they achieve what they did in the McCoy
- 33:08videotape exactly. Is inside a balloon, he's old in
- 33:12that layer. Leaning into it here for ya.
- 33:17All these horror influences, absolutely, and it's imagery and
- 33:21things that kids can play with as well.
- 33:23Like every kid can have a balloon that they carry around
- 33:26and pretend to be ribbons. Look at those flesh mosfet
- 33:29terrifying and a bit where the whole swarm comes after it out
- 33:33and smoke and just in the name, it tells you exactly what they
- 33:37are. You don't need some big
- 33:38explanation. People often talk about this
- 33:42errors, you know, not being very good to be.
- 33:45In terms of like explanations and things like that but they /
- 33:49/ sort of talk everything. But here it's it's very measured
- 33:53and it's very just sort of it's a flash mob.
- 33:55That's our we know exactly what that does.
- 33:57Now you should be afraid of it. I mean I'm guessing.
- 33:59Yeah, we're doing so much. Is that?
- 34:01We ain't got time to hang around talk about it too much.
- 34:03In fact, I think the only seen the doesn't work in this as well
- 34:06as it could do is wear. Poor Jodie.
- 34:08Whittaker is stuck with a ton of exposition about what solid
- 34:12tract is and she does get it across really well.
- 34:14She's kind of Today at this point B have big clunky all that
- 34:18explanation. It also throws in with the solid
- 34:21tracks. You've got a load of Time Lord
- 34:22mythology there in a way that's you.
- 34:25You just necessarily wouldn't necessarily people always say
- 34:28that this era of some sort of continuity life, but it isn't
- 34:32like there are bits there. It's just not the pride
- 34:34O'Neill's of Gallifrey did this, which, you know, we'll get to
- 34:36that next season obviously. But yeah, I think I was in.
- 34:40Sarah goes along continuity. I is not something you can
- 34:43accuse it off. I mean, That era that puts the
- 34:46word sheboygan's back on Main Street.
- 34:48In we've just missed a little reveal of like the speaker's,
- 35:00things like that. Again, I did not know.
- 35:02At that point, I did not expect it to be a bunch of speakers.
- 35:05You like, what is, what is going on here?
- 35:08It's just and that balloon floating above them.
- 35:10Now just looks fantastic. It's a like if he's try and
- 35:15think about Out the logic of this World, perhaps it might
- 35:18fall apart a little bit, but I don't think this the nature of
- 35:21the story and the nature of what it is means.
- 35:24You don't want to think about, but the world too much because
- 35:28it's a fantasy with the atmosphere.
- 35:31Yeah, is such an effective atmosphere.
- 35:33You know, I like my ex-husband and I had a absolute terrifying
- 35:37fear of moths and if it got it, one flew in the room, he
- 35:41peripatetic over there. No screaming his head off, like
- 35:44a big girl. I kind of get it now.
- 35:47Yeah. And it's great because he's done
- 35:53big bugs for years. It has, you know, and also quite
- 35:57sort of cute fluffy things, but they really give him an edge
- 35:59here, but Jodi's running through the corridors and they're just,
- 36:04they're all fluffy and be like, I'm now we know that y Toby,
- 36:09hey, don't was so gutted about the moths eating this Doctor Who
- 36:11scarf because they were coming for his flesh.
- 36:13Next right. It's right.
- 36:15One thing I forgot to mention was, what is the most?
- 36:17Dr. Ish thing that she could possibly do when they find that
- 36:21Paul. She sticks.
- 36:22Her head right through it straight.
- 36:24Yeah, that's right. What's on the other side?
- 36:26It's a bit like a redness in the UK to remember when he said,
- 36:28there's a big spider down, my old.
- 36:30She goes right. Let's go.
- 36:31It's you strap it down. She's a very proactive doctor.
- 36:35And I think, people forget that and it's her sense of it's a 13
- 36:41Adventure. In a slightly naive way, but not
- 36:44nice. Ieave - it's not under -
- 36:46naivety, she's just like goes into everything with such Gusto
- 36:50and excitement. And I think the mafia Tiara was
- 36:55certainly the capacity era which I'm very fond of, but it was
- 36:57missing that it was all, it was quite a totally depressing era
- 37:03in a way in terms of who the doctor was and the doctors
- 37:06Journey. Now I think parts that worked
- 37:08and parts that didn't and obviously you get into him with
- 37:12Bill later on where it is a bit more like this.
- 37:14But this is So refreshingly like an exciting Adventure Show.
- 37:19Again, I the climax of this story and the word I wrote down
- 37:24was optimistic. It's just so optimistic for the
- 37:27future and its celebrating, the best of Life.
- 37:31Yeah, and I think some people look at that and go, oh, how
- 37:33cold know we should be doing a bit more of that, you know, at
- 37:37the same time, we've just seen a flash mob crawl out of the eye
- 37:41socket of the Dead ribbons. It's like horrible.
- 37:44It's Defying, like I keep saying this again and again but I
- 37:48cannot believe how confident this episode of Doctor Who is in
- 37:52terms of what it can get away with and what it's trying to
- 37:55achieve. Its it's beautiful and it's a
- 37:57bottle episode, essentially it's three sets and made well it's
- 38:03two sets, really? Because it's the house used in
- 38:06both universes. And then the the space in
- 38:08between like we get at a completely different visual
- 38:12palette. Now, when we go into the solid
- 38:14track universe, And it's the same sets and locations, but
- 38:18everything sort of oversaturated and and much better lit.
- 38:22Not basically it's sorry brighter.
- 38:25So it's just that ethereal Netherworld but also to suggest
- 38:30like almost hope and happiness. Hmm, I also think there's a
- 38:35version of this story where it's, the, almost the other way
- 38:38around where you start in the happier universe and then go to
- 38:41the the sadder place like the would have been an interesting
- 38:44sort of Every there but, uh, I do that, couldn't you?
- 38:47Yeah, yeah, I sort of flip flops the Barrio, but which would have
- 38:52been quite interesting, but this one actually looks so young
- 39:01here, doesn't she? She's a very beautiful woman as
- 39:05well. I think people, especially when
- 39:07they're slacking off. They forget that but there's
- 39:09something, she's beautiful, but there's something slightly
- 39:12otherworldly, but yet really approachable about it, This is
- 39:15what I find. I can't believe how lucky we
- 39:19were to get a doctor, that sort of f of x and so full of Hope
- 39:24and so beautiful. During one of the darkest times,
- 39:27I can remember the pandemic. Absolutely.
- 39:29Like imagine like season 8 Capaldi.
- 39:55Some Doctor Who fans think that actually Chris chibnall just did
- 39:58the pandemic. So we would have these caused it
- 40:00so we could have less Doctor Who in our lives.
- 40:03Wow. Some that may not be mad.
- 40:11She's such a fantastic. She's only every scene here.
- 40:15Like the issue. You've got no doubts that this
- 40:18is the most important person in the room, but she just with, she
- 40:22wants to help. I forgot to mention about when
- 40:26she means ribbons, and I she's instantly sort of negotiate with
- 40:29him, you know? Yeah, that nobody else really
- 40:31knows what housing behave around him because it's him, but she's
- 40:35very confident. They're also doing something
- 40:38that this area is really good. At there is no reason for it to
- 40:41be. That to Norway at all.
- 40:42But it's just, this is a series set in all of time and space.
- 40:46Let's just not be in Wales or London, and it's even just
- 40:52having the fan based at Sheffield and things like that.
- 40:54It's like, there is a know, obviously if we want to really
- 40:58think about it, they were maybe perhaps the issues, the Doctor
- 41:01Who predominantly happens on Earth.
- 41:02But that's because the nature of the show and where it's been
- 41:05made, but just going to different parts of the UK in
- 41:08different parts of the world rather than it being Nor wails
- 41:12really sells the scale of Storytelling you can endure and
- 41:16whither they like sometimes they go overseas and into South
- 41:20Africa, places like that, and I can absolutely say.
- 41:22But even in things like spiteful, where I think some of
- 41:25it or practice, Alias where. Yeah, however, is on location.
- 41:29Others is just very well done sets and things like that.
- 41:32Yeah, he really does make it International that Global feel.
- 41:37It's, and you we talked about it on Demons of the Punjab as well.
- 41:41Not just setting something in that time.
- 41:43It's sort of groundbreaking for the show and for me, I know you
- 41:46said you had a few issues with kablam, but this has been a
- 41:52straight. What I remember when these were
- 41:54coming out, one after another Punjab kablam, which finders it
- 41:58takes you away our side by this series is just getting better
- 42:02and better. I couldn't understand what sort
- 42:04of so I'm gonna wait and I just think, you know, it's gone from
- 42:11A few weeks ago or a year ago, you had two masters and the
- 42:16Tenth Planet Side of any sort of thing.
- 42:17And then the first doctor it's like I can see why people who
- 42:21want that version of Doctor Who she had a lot with this version.
- 42:26But weirdly then when we threw in chibnall throws in all the
- 42:29continuity, they derided again for not being original.
- 42:33You can't win because this is something that I do every now.
- 42:36And again, they throw Ryan in with a female character, it
- 42:39happens with the Who roams in fact, say S Plus 55.
- 42:44He has that sort of almost romance with the terrorists.
- 42:47I'll take that works really well.
- 42:48It gets to be a bit charming and, you know, do so much just
- 42:53do it. Yeah, again, I do think
- 42:58everybody's got enough to do in this.
- 43:00Like one of the complaints of the era that I think is sort of
- 43:03Justified, is that there's a lot to do, there's not always enough
- 43:05for all four characters to do but I think they've even just by
- 43:09leaving Ryan behind a little It he's discovering the mystery,
- 43:13the other end and looking after her.
- 43:15And they are all given enough to do Yaz, is slightly lightly
- 43:19used, but then I just think her and Jody together.
- 43:22I just, I just think kind of bubble and I'm while I'm not
- 43:25exactly picking up sound some in fives here.
- 43:30They do start by the end of the season, they do start to rumble
- 43:32under a little bit, I think. Yeah.
- 43:34I think people do forget, you know, people meet friends and
- 43:37then things develop, you know, yeah absolutely especially in.
- 43:41Tense situations like that. And also I don't think it's
- 43:46explicitly said that whether yet as is straight or gay or bi or
- 43:51whatever but there's there's also perhaps this is a little
- 43:54bit of her coming to terms with their own sexuality are in my
- 43:58sort of headcanon. She's a straight woman who's met
- 44:01this amazing woman and just gone.
- 44:03Oh my God, I love her apartment by the end of it.
- 44:05Rather than this being some big sort of.
- 44:07I am a lesbian, it's more where you can fall to.
- 44:10I think it's Is it just more about the way some people think
- 44:14and just a very binary way, isn't a very good way?
- 44:17I, absolutely, I know something like that who is considered
- 44:20himself heterosexual but had a relationship with a woman that
- 44:24they fell in love with. Yeah, this is themselves
- 44:26heterosexual or go home. Yes.
- 44:29Because it has ourselves. Yeah.
- 44:30It's for sexual about had a relationship with a woman
- 44:32because they just fell in love. It was a woman.
- 44:34Sorry. Yeah.
- 44:38Society becomes more open. And we talked about Trauma team
- 44:41or me, realize that things aren't.
- 44:43So binary that you but I have, I know a few people who have had,
- 44:48like, one off Affairs or relationships with the same
- 44:52gender, because it just felt right for them at the time and
- 44:55they largely considered themselves hetrosexual, I can
- 44:58pass their relationship. All over the same Jody.
- 45:01Tap me up. All right, you're gorgeous.
- 45:05And it's Jody the woman for you, then it's probably not what I
- 45:09think. Our personalities clicked.
- 45:17We had a chemistry and if there was ever going to be a time, it
- 45:20was going to be so I'm not tired.
- 45:23I'm not somewhere on the scale. I'm just sort of it more that
- 45:26way. Yeah.
- 45:28Anyway enough of my sexuality but did you notice how that
- 45:31scene was shot? I'm gonna go where G is talking
- 45:34to Grace and you can see all their breath as their tool.
- 45:36Yeah. Yeah, it's just got that sense
- 45:38of. So I'm reality about, I really
- 45:39love it. Such a Jody, working it all out
- 45:45in under Moffat. This would have been like a big
- 45:47Sherlock, a moment, but it's not played like Sherlock.
- 45:50It's it's more just she's having this internal sort of conflict.
- 45:54I love seeing the doctor work something out, but it not being
- 45:58like, I'm cleverer than all of you.
- 46:00All that information is there, so you can just go like that.
- 46:03It's, it takes a good good writer to make the doctor seen
- 46:08this, relatable. And that clever, but also, Can
- 46:10you think of anything sort of more Doctor Who than we started
- 46:15off as a very simple story about a young girl abandoned in that
- 46:19house of the woods to a story about a separate universe that,
- 46:25you know, split apart from this universe because they weren't
- 46:28compatible with it, I'm acid because that's what with mundane
- 46:32and sort of extraordinarily creative side by side.
- 46:35Yeah, that's Doctor Who it absolutely is an again.
- 46:39Somebody else would have gone on it.
- 46:40A fiction or something like that behind there.
- 46:42But when you pull away from the big continuity things, you have
- 46:46to concentrate more and just telling the best possible
- 46:49version of the story is because it could always be the master or
- 46:52the Daleks behind it or something.
- 46:54But actually in a story about grief, it doesn't need to be
- 46:59beside of end up converting dead people or whatever it can just
- 47:03be in the stories allowed to breathe, what?
- 47:06And that's what I love that about this as well.
- 47:08Because like, you say, you could so easily You have been, you
- 47:11know, I'm a big villainous, other Universe, you know,
- 47:15dipping bread for things. That is, it's the equivalent of
- 47:18like a lonely little girl or a lonely.
- 47:20Little boy that just wants to be involved, you know, me, the
- 47:24other person about his house in the doctor's wife, which is sort
- 47:28of this weird sort of micro sentient universe.
- 47:32But as you say, it's a big bad. Yeah, it's almost sort of a, you
- 47:37get that a lot in like classic Star Trek of like, oh It's like
- 47:41just some higher race that doesn't understand humans in the
- 47:44senate in the same way as we doing.
- 47:46You know the twist is oh it's a child that's it's actually in
- 47:50the bad guy but not a bad guy, he's just misunderstood and even
- 47:53though it is is always got the great clipped English mysterious
- 47:57voice. So I can't impression I have a
- 48:03brand-new water emoting on the screen right now and he's
- 48:07fantastic in this and so she like a week.
- 48:11Obviously, she's the impetus for the whole story and she is the
- 48:15bit behind the adventures that they go on.
- 48:17And indeed she is the woman who fell to Earth but I would have
- 48:21loved to have seen more of Grace in this series.
- 48:25He's so charismatic, isn't she? Yeah it's such a.
- 48:28I understand why she dies a why she only appears here but I
- 48:31would have just part of me. Wanted Graham to have like his
- 48:37Jackie and Pete moment where somehow reunited.
- 48:41And they get to be together because it's heartbreaking and
- 48:43the chemistry between them. You believe there are couples
- 48:46who believe they're in love, because everybody knows the
- 48:48source of couple in their late 50s early 60s.
- 48:51But I like this who just clearly love each other.
- 48:54I've met later in life, perhaps and they're just totally in
- 48:57love, and to have that taken away, it's heartbreaking, and
- 49:00it's worth remembering. You know, this was being told in
- 49:03the 60s, it wouldn't be a white man and a black woman and no
- 49:07relationship like this. You know, you can And people
- 49:11going to scream about Doctor Who's become fucking woke.
- 49:14Good, at least there's a bit more representation.
- 49:18Me too. And you know what, just I don't
- 49:21think Doctor, Who would have done this 10 years ago.
- 49:24I don't think it would have been a conscious thing, but they
- 49:26wouldn't they wouldn't have gone that there are okay, there's an
- 49:29interracial couple little things like, having the little girl is
- 49:33blind. I know it's sort of part of the
- 49:34story, but the story would have worked without her being blind
- 49:37as well, and it's just like people.
- 49:41Finding themselves within the story of like go, the world is a
- 49:44very diverse place. These are the relationships of
- 49:47people, but existed it lest you know bothered about her being
- 49:52blind and more bothered by. This reminds me so much of Greta
- 49:55tunberg. You know, every time I see her
- 49:57I'm just going to go how dare you, is it just me?
- 50:05Maybe it's just me. No no I get you, I get you.
- 50:07It is she's got great Vibes to her.
- 50:11I would like to say that the doctor does have a moment of
- 50:14intense insensitivity here in a second where she calls Grace
- 50:18furniture with a pulse, that is insensitive.
- 50:23And I do think all of the doctors have their insensitive
- 50:26moments. I think people throw them at
- 50:29Jodi's, doctors particularly, but I honestly find that there's
- 50:34a lot of insensitivity and all of the doctors, but you can't
- 50:37talk about incidents in sensitivity after fucking
- 50:40watching. The Capaldi era before this and
- 50:42then he seeing how the response to Danny pink and Danny Pink's
- 50:47like responds to him. It's like, this is all really
- 50:50misjudged do. The first one is Danny, pink is
- 50:53dead, and he goes. And I was thinking, you know,
- 51:03Danny pink Dynamic. I find it troubling like it
- 51:07almost bordering on. It's racism because he's always
- 51:12been rubbing shoulders with soldiers.
- 51:14Yeah, exactly. Looks awesome.
- 51:17I'm always. Sensitive is when he says here,
- 51:18you want to chat with him. He's that top layer over there.
- 51:20All right. Yeah, love that look.
- 51:26But when I had stopped at Danny pink, don't do that.
- 51:29Another day. Our fabulous doctors spend the
- 51:31entire episode solving this mystery.
- 51:34Now she's got her answer. Now she's got to convince
- 51:37everybody to abandon and their loved ones.
- 51:40Yeah, in this wonderful sequence.
- 51:43Yeah, and you would want to stay like this, and you could be
- 51:49there with my mother. I'll be there in a shot.
- 51:52Yeah, and you and you would have a very happy life but it's just
- 51:55because it's pulled you into sort of feed off this energy.
- 51:59And yeah, you just, you just absolutely would and it's just
- 52:02such a heartbreaking scenario. And it takes a good actor and a
- 52:08good writing and a good doctor to be able to convince those
- 52:12people to leave. And I know eventually she just
- 52:15sort of basically offers herself up instead of so it was the
- 52:18sacrifice but it's absolutely. But I genuinely think she thinks
- 52:24she's not going back. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:27Which is happens. Every now and then in Doctor
- 52:29Who, and it's always a fantastic moment.
- 52:32And I love it a lot, but because that is the So who's capable of
- 52:38so much selfishness? The incessant insensitivity will
- 52:40one moment and then just absolute selfishness for, you
- 52:44know, their friends or a complete stranger.
- 52:47I still wish we'd got that regeneration story for David
- 52:50Tennant. The rusty Davis talked about of
- 52:52him stress at a fighting himself for a family, he didn't know.
- 52:55But I don't think I don't know whether the show could ever do
- 52:58that anymore. Not.
- 52:59I had like a subtle send-off for a doctor intriguing.
- 53:02I like the ideally Andrew cartmel moose hit about the
- 53:05Seventh Doctor regenerates. Generate him because he lost his
- 53:07mind and the last shot of him in a padded cell, like, cradling
- 53:11himself under. That's the way I could do it as
- 53:15well, because I'm perfect. He is mad.
- 53:20Nice to insult him in both yours and my podcast in the same.
- 53:24It's fine. They'll be they'll be months
- 53:26apart. No we're not mr.
- 53:28McCoy? Yes exactly.
- 53:30It's my favorite Classic series doctor anyway and you provided
- 53:32the greatest moment of the year when you went on about Anna love
- 53:37in your doctor. All she's really having said
- 53:42like, yeah, basically let her go or we're gonna die and I love
- 53:47how that is made explicit in this story.
- 53:49So he spent this whole he's gone off on adventures with her.
- 53:51He's trying to forget about Grace or let her go.
- 53:55You have a moment in a records in the UK where she's still
- 53:57haunting him, you know, to the house, the Beautiful Moments
- 54:00there. And there what they had to had
- 54:03to do a story where he chooses to eat. either live in the past
- 54:07or embrace the future and the fact they make it so explicit
- 54:11and so emotional on the screen, Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 54:17Reason why this would have been a good finale, a good emotional
- 54:22conclusion to the Steve. Yeah.
- 54:24Chris the only stuff that happens in rascal have Carlos
- 54:27that you would have to change is the fact that Ryan's calling him
- 54:32Granddad in there. And I think that's probably
- 54:35about it and it's a minor change as you doesn't it?
- 54:39That's this one. Yeah, exactly.
- 54:41So that a glut of these over dumb emotional moments.
- 54:47The last ten seasons of Doctor Who a subtle moment like that.
- 54:52I love it. Yeah, it's a lovely moment and
- 54:56ran score, of course, would have made a perfect episode 9 you
- 54:59would have on our team shoulders back.
- 55:01So, it's a bit of a Sci-Fi episode before the end and I
- 55:05think people go off. This is a groundbreaking finale
- 55:08for talk to because it is not the, the big battle of Daleks
- 55:12and Cybermen. And I mean, the last few years
- 55:15before this, it was always side from involvement.
- 55:17And Do you know what? Like I was afraid you there
- 55:20quite a finale. I would I would quite like
- 55:22because they just got too bombastic in the end, you know.
- 55:25Exactly. But this I don't think we would
- 55:29have had a problem with this and then the season.
- 55:31No. I've got a quick word as well
- 55:35for Mario, not my God. Second that canola are the
- 55:39school's really, the sky's fantastic and especially here
- 55:42where he's the violins are coming in and it's all getting a
- 55:46bit climactic. He did the same thing in the,
- 55:48which Vine is he brought the lines?
- 55:49And that one is what. And it's, the sort of sound
- 55:51we've not heard before. Yeah.
- 55:53It's again, it's a different flavor from the big bombastic
- 55:59Murray gold scores, which there's nothing wrong with, but
- 56:03I'm so happy to have it. The atmosphere it creates is a
- 56:06creepier one as a result. I think he does go a bit more
- 56:10Murray goldish. As he goes along the school's,
- 56:13get a bit louder and more Pacey but I think the scripts demand
- 56:18that other as well, I agree. Yeah, by the time you get to
- 56:22flocks, you're very much back in the territory of RTD and Moffat
- 56:26area in terms of the big adventure series that this
- 56:28perhaps is not and doing it brilliantly.
- 56:31I think that's why. Evan has such a unique feel.
- 56:34Yeah exactly. Oh boy.
- 56:37Here comes the Frog. Okay, here's my question.
- 56:41And why is that frog? Just one of the best things
- 56:43ever. It's amazing.
- 56:46It's a fantastic concept. I don't think the execution
- 56:49works 100% of the time but it's selling you an idea like and it
- 56:55works like and I think they were right to do it as a model as
- 56:59well. But in the list, this is classic
- 57:01who in a nutshell. Very, with that shitty Pearl.
- 57:07It's true. That's such a good idea.
- 57:10It's a cliche to say it's quite Duncan's, Douglas Adams e, but
- 57:13it is, it's just, it's just got that vibe to it.
- 57:16And it is a shame that we didn't mention about Grace and frogs in
- 57:20the woman who fell to Earth at some point.
- 57:21Yeah, exactly. Just sewing the idea in a little
- 57:25bit but it's a clever one that works in can differ a compliment
- 57:29your way. Go on, you're the maddest most
- 57:32Beautiful thing I've ever experienced, I haven't even
- 57:36scratched the surface. Thank you very much.
- 57:41A lot of people say that about me and my knowledge of nice
- 57:43Doctor Who stuff. It's a, it's a wonderful
- 57:48sentiment. Oh yeah, it is like, and again
- 57:52the doctors not trying to destroy or fight this.
- 57:55So it's just like, I need to understand what this is.
- 57:58It's such a Bonkers concept, and Jody plays it.
- 58:03So well did I think this this if I was going to do like the best
- 58:0813th, Doctor scenes, probably be the one.
- 58:13She blows the kiss and walks away.
- 58:16I couldn't love her more. Yeah, she's phenomenal.
- 58:20And I again, I hope as people re-evaluate this series and this
- 58:24era, they come back to this and realize what a fucking special
- 58:27actor. They got in the role and it does
- 58:30the fact that she's being so kind, And and it's an act of
- 58:35kindness it. Remember in Peril the doctor at
- 58:37the last thing she does before. She's murdered by the doctor.
- 58:40At by the master is that very kind act of letting, again.
- 58:44Another strange, weird creature, the likes of which she's doing
- 58:49before. It's like almost like a greatest
- 58:50hits, she's such a such a coin doctor.
- 58:53I like that. And I think it's great casting.
- 58:56And I think the problem is he got the idea of who should play
- 59:00Doctor Who that fans have is almost Always wrong.
- 59:04Like, if you ask people about who should be the first female
- 59:07doctor, they would have got our Helena Bonham Carter or someone
- 59:10like that. And it's just not her.
- 59:13Because it's so in the doctor's wife, all they go, like Hayley
- 59:17Atwell because they loved her in fucking light.
- 59:20Marvel's Agents of Shield, or Peggy, Carter, or whatever it is
- 59:23like that. Because they've seen a pay a
- 59:24lead and it's not that it's someone with a different range
- 59:28in a different approach who doesn't really care what
- 59:31happened in the fucking Ryback. Operation or something like
- 59:37you've never seen doll of Doctor.
- 59:38Who before good? You might bring something new to
- 59:40it. And just, I don't know.
- 59:43Just someone with so much heart. I just, I just love that batter
- 59:46and coming off the Capaldi as well.
- 59:48Who for all intents of us is was fairly dark doctor even.
- 59:52Yeah, it is lighter Seasons. I thought last year I was going
- 59:57to be a wedding that she was going to be at, but she wasn't
- 1:00:00there, a friend, a friend of mine, married, someone, and who
- 1:00:05was in? What's it called?
- 1:00:07Broadchurch. And she played me a voice
- 1:00:10message. When I'd seen a just before To
- 1:00:12go. Oh yeah, makes with Jodie
- 1:00:13Whittaker now and just play with.
- 1:00:14It's like it was just Jody being Jody and I was like, I'm going
- 1:00:17to get to meet Jodie, Whittaker a wedding, but she wasn't there
- 1:00:20sometimes you could have given her.
- 1:00:22My number I could have done, I could have done, I meant to
- 1:00:26mention, you know, the bit where everyone's gone back through
- 1:00:30into the inter sewn and then the solid tracked traps, the doxa,
- 1:00:36the lighting there where the light comes to remember oil
- 1:00:39comes through the rafters and then just pauses.
- 1:00:42Yeah, brilliant. It is so effective.
- 1:00:45I feel like just everyone got together, you know, they have
- 1:00:48these tone meetings, but everyone was in absolutely, for
- 1:00:52this one. Absolutely, like, everybody just
- 1:00:55knew what they wanted to do. And they, I'm not saying they
- 1:00:58knew they were making something special, but they knew that they
- 1:01:01needed to make this episode different from anything that
- 1:01:03came before, aren't a feeling people reject, the Frog, you
- 1:01:06know, because some people just reject doctor, you're being
- 1:01:09silly, it's the same people that reject.
- 1:01:12This Levine and the wheelie bin that burped and all those things
- 1:01:16that might possibly appeal to the kids is, you know, sir,
- 1:01:18forgive me. The, in Levine's of this world
- 1:01:21will take things a bit too seriously.
- 1:01:24And when I was 16 17, 18 19, I was desperate for Doctor Who not
- 1:01:29to be seen as a joke, and not to be seen as silly.
- 1:01:32And I was like, it would mortify me.
- 1:01:35Like they, the 0th of Doctor Who was remembrance of the Daleks
- 1:01:38and Earth shock, because that's what Doctor Who should be like.
- 1:01:41And then Now, obviously, you grow older and you learned, many
- 1:01:45things about yourself and about entertainment and how stories
- 1:01:48are structured and the moment, Rusty Davis brings the show back
- 1:01:51and it's a bit silly. I'm like, almost like I didn't
- 1:01:54realize Doctor Who could be this funny and then you suddenly see
- 1:01:57how funny it was back in the day and it's just really a shock,
- 1:02:01Scott Barrel, read pissed. Lila Derek's award are oh yeah,
- 1:02:13we were a different. Well we're 13.
- 1:02:16Yeah, exactly. And I think it probably suited a
- 1:02:19lot of fans who were suddenly growing up that in the 80s
- 1:02:22Doctor Who was this violent Syria show but it shouldn't
- 1:02:26necessarily big. It can be.
- 1:02:28And I think it's important or we're missing the moment of this
- 1:02:33is great. Talking about Eric's able to
- 1:02:37this person. I'm going to know what people
- 1:02:40really rat on children's. A riot but I think it's he's
- 1:02:43quiet character moments where he's a absolute best people say
- 1:02:46that that scene in resolution between Ron and his dad often
- 1:02:52that one of the best written action sequences in the era.
- 1:02:57And that there's little Grim, as he calls them Granddad.
- 1:02:59It's just a, it's a lovely moment.
- 1:03:02I think the issue is that, it's not, but criminal can't write
- 1:03:05characters, it's just, he's got a lot of them.
- 1:03:07So only one of them ever really gets that the moments per
- 1:03:10episode and he has a tendency to add in a massive guest cast, as
- 1:03:14well. Yeah, I was got any screen time
- 1:03:17but also like it's a problem with Doctor Who that you've got
- 1:03:20to introduce a get rid of a guest cast in 45, 50 minutes,
- 1:03:24you know? So In other programs, characters
- 1:03:28don't evolve and like, all their character development, doesn't
- 1:03:33happen in one episode, it happens slowly over time, so I
- 1:03:35don't think it's a huge, huge problem.
- 1:03:38I just think people people need to look for the moments in it
- 1:03:43and appreciate what's there as things evolve slowly.
- 1:03:45It's not all just thrown at you, like I think that's because
- 1:03:48muffin it was very like here it is.
- 1:03:50Take all this, take all this character and it's funny and
- 1:03:52there's sexy and there's violence, whereas this fucking
- 1:03:55exhausting is, what it It is Arthur exactly.
- 1:03:58Now, look at this. This beautiful next time trailer
- 1:04:03for Battle of robins caught up, Carlos, it does look like, it's
- 1:04:06going to be a fantastic episode. Just it's all right.
- 1:04:09I think he's as bad as well. I do, it's beautifully shot.
- 1:04:12Actually it's but you know Jamie chance of the cseries 11
- 1:04:17director is me Will Do. Ya Allah spent all of Punjab
- 1:04:21saying with Mark tonderai. It wasn't, it was Jamie Charles.
- 1:04:24Oh God, I think my wife and I did the same.
- 1:04:26Oh well. Redacted.
- 1:04:30There are a lot of time on these podcasts that doctor who can be
- 1:04:33anything and go anywhere. I think I used the word
- 1:04:36idiosyncratic at least once per episode.
- 1:04:38Oh yeah, it's the rules. This might be the most
- 1:04:41idiosyncratic Doctor Who episode and in terms of showing you
- 1:04:46everywhere, you can go in one hour.
- 1:04:50Yeah sure. It can be beaten absolutely.
- 1:04:54It's if I was going to show somebody an episode of the Jodie
- 1:04:58Whittaker era. It's sort of say this is what
- 1:05:01encompasses the era it would probably be this one.
- 1:05:05And, you know, I think I'll sit good.
- 1:05:07I'm just gonna say you have to be a fucking idiot, not to enjoy
- 1:05:09it. Well, we said that about Punjab
- 1:05:11has allowed in weight as well. I think people were used to,
- 1:05:17because the one who fell to Earth was fairly Forward piece
- 1:05:21of Storytelling. So stuff like Iraq is in the UK,
- 1:05:24the saranga conundrum, the things like that, that they've
- 1:05:28called a sort of simple linear storytelling with lots of
- 1:05:31character. Bees are think.
- 1:05:33They thought that this sort of complex storytelling might have
- 1:05:36been a thing of the past. Yeah.
- 1:05:39Or yeah. And coming after the mafia era
- 1:05:41where everything was very convoluted and you know very
- 1:05:45often in a genius kind of way. I think this came as a like I'm
- 1:05:50Real were freshmen often rely simple stories earlier in the
- 1:05:54year. Absolutely.
- 1:05:55But also just to say that people were complaining about how over
- 1:06:00convoluted and complicated and nostalgic filled the Moffett ear
- 1:06:03was so you go for a simpler style of Storytelling in the
- 1:06:06first part of this series. Everybody's like, well, I didn't
- 1:06:09mean like that weird and also we have a we feel like dogs, we
- 1:06:15should be entirely cater to our own tastes.
- 1:06:17I know it's very strange and just by the The base level of
- 1:06:21the format is never going to be. There will always be a episodes.
- 1:06:24You prefer more. I don't think there's a reason a
- 1:06:27series of Doctor Who where I universally loved each of this
- 1:06:31episode's. The same amount there are ones
- 1:06:33that appeals will be more than others.
- 1:06:35I and like I love this this series.
- 1:06:39Now series 9 I fucking love series 9 and everybody Rats on
- 1:06:43it and it's like that's the nature of the show.
- 1:06:46It's and again, I said it on the last one.
- 1:06:50I said it on this one, the fact that this 60 year old TV series
- 1:06:53is still covering new ground is just a testament to what a
- 1:06:57fantastic idea Doctor Who was in the first place.
- 1:07:00Well, I was has a marvelous Place 2nd, you know.
- 1:07:03But unfortunately, we do have to do all three things.
- 1:07:05A piece back and forth. Got about that.
- 1:07:08Yeah, yeah. Had just said a very polite,
- 1:07:12goodbye on your podcast. How about you more work?
- 1:07:15Sorry, I don't know. Chris, will you guys first?
- 1:07:18And I'll go after you. I'm going to take the lighting I
- 1:07:22think, which is the cinematography as well.
- 1:07:25Like, it just, it's a very, very considered environments that
- 1:07:30help Drive The Narrative, just through the power of lighting in
- 1:07:34all the different areas of the story.
- 1:07:38I'm going to say the characterization of the doctor.
- 1:07:41I mean job take it as written that I think Jody is brilliant
- 1:07:45but I think on paper as well, the doctors just constantly
- 1:07:50trying to sell things. Looking out for our friends
- 1:07:53being funny, lot of witty asides, gets a confrontation
- 1:07:59with the villain of the piece that just happens to be all
- 1:08:02kindness. Yeah, just brilliant.
- 1:08:05It's a bold New interpretation of the doctor.
- 1:08:09And at this point it's working like gangbusters exactly.
- 1:08:14My second one is going to be Kevin Alton as ribbons just for
- 1:08:18it. The character itself is such a
- 1:08:20fun creation, but I think he gives it, gives it his all in
- 1:08:25this kind of. It's both subtle and
- 1:08:27over-the-top at the same time, as the only way I can describe
- 1:08:30it and it's such a unique little character that is probably no
- 1:08:35more was probably only on For a day or two doing this like
- 1:08:39little Cameo but it just it's such a fantastic character to
- 1:08:43have in the middle of the story. So Kevin elderness ribbons.
- 1:08:48My second will be the grace and Graham which is like the quiet
- 1:08:54strength of this season. Breaking My Heart in the woman
- 1:08:58who fell to Earth and in arachnids the UK and initative.
- 1:09:03This is the payoff to that where he finally has to make the
- 1:09:05choice of, you know, holding on Or moving on.
- 1:09:10And it is just stunning and sort of very visceral, very emotional
- 1:09:13way. I was really engaged with it.
- 1:09:16Yeah. Number two, my number three is
- 1:09:19Graham and Ryan's little moment at the end where they're finding
- 1:09:23least, they finally feel like grandfather and Grandson.
- 1:09:28It's just, it's a lovely moment but the series has been hurtling
- 1:09:31towards. Like again, people say that
- 1:09:35there isn't the kind of interlinking are They want in
- 1:09:38this series, but it's all character-based like you were
- 1:09:40saying about the gray and gray stuff and the Graham and tosin
- 1:09:45stuff, like, it's all character. That is linking these stories
- 1:09:48and the journey they go on together.
- 1:09:51So, it's that moment of the waiting on a few head into the
- 1:09:54second half of the era. And finally, as get so character
- 1:09:57stuff and is Yasmin. The doctor?
- 1:09:59Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09:59And people fucking hate it. I think I loved it.
- 1:10:02The payoff. With that scene on the Tardis,
- 1:10:04eating the ice creams ah daud it.
- 1:10:08Anything where she goes. It's Alright.
- 1:10:10Yes. When she's crying in the Tardis
- 1:10:11after she says she's going to regenerate.
- 1:10:14Jesus will start growing. My first thing then is going to
- 1:10:19be oh yeah, of course, those fucking chilling, moths.
- 1:10:23Yeah, I'll watch this twice in a day and I'm not sure I'm going
- 1:10:25to sleep tonight. I fear of horrible.
- 1:10:29Great flash mobs coming out of the smoke.
- 1:10:31At me, it's Doctor Who during giant insects in a weird way,
- 1:10:37which has been a staple We'll sit silent, the maggots and the
- 1:10:39spiders and all of that and it still works folks.
- 1:10:44It does still work, it does the work and it's such an exciting
- 1:10:47way. I thought again that imagery of
- 1:10:49it just coming out of a skull by yeah, they always suck it.
- 1:10:57What Dylan I wanted you would care to please tell the viewers
- 1:11:01now, you know, you did at the beginning of the episode but do
- 1:11:04it the end as well because I got short memories of the Epic.
- 1:11:07But we Face ahead of us. Yes.
- 1:11:10Next time we're going to be doing all six episodes of flux
- 1:11:14together which I'm very excited to to revisit.
- 1:11:17I don't know exactly when we're going to do we're going to do
- 1:11:20it. But what we're going to do it in
- 1:11:23like 2 episode chunks. I imagine I don't think I could
- 1:11:25do it in a day, but I'm very excited to revisit.
- 1:11:32What was one of my favorite seasons of?
- 1:11:35Don't talk to who won first transmission?
- 1:11:38Oh my God, it's one of my favorites as well.
- 1:11:40Perfect, there you go. I'm a jerk and it ranks.
- 1:11:45Oh, it's difficult. It's definitely a probably my
- 1:11:49top three of the new series I think do much.
- 1:11:53I can see where is for me. It's false.
- 1:11:55Okay, I'll go for three. People are gonna sound crazy 8,
- 1:12:02then flux. So people are gonna think - I
- 1:12:08think it's six. Mine looks.
- 1:12:17I love you so much, I know. And she do one day if we do
- 1:12:22commentaries on and episodes from those Seasons I'll tell you
- 1:12:25why I love them. It's more about how I enjoyed
- 1:12:29them at the time rather than necessarily them I think they're
- 1:12:32the Zenith of the best Doctor Who you could possibly make but
- 1:12:37I think you should come on and do what I consider to be the
- 1:12:41worst episode of the new series and is from Is it serious?
- 1:12:44Six and ten Juwan wrong? The wedding of River Song?
- 1:12:51Okay, I will because I love that finale.
- 1:12:54I love people coming on Sammy. How I'm wrong about the Steven
- 1:12:56Moffat era, just people Charming people, like, Mark McManus
- 1:13:00managed to convince me. Then the deep breath is
- 1:13:02fantastic. Now role of it.
- 1:13:04No one was convinced me that the breath is fantastic.
- 1:13:09But no, we are gonna tackle flax.
- 1:13:11Yeah, we've got trees ahead of us.
- 1:13:13Such as swarm and Azure cars ankles the sontarans.
- 1:13:19It's just one treasure after another That season.
- 1:13:21I cannot wait. I think it's going to be very
- 1:13:23exciting and moving, they'll be laughs and scares and heartbreak
- 1:13:28along the way.
