- 1:19Carter the original air and eight December the seventh, nineteen forty seven. The
- 1:23title the Case the Exploded Alibi Alibi Today's adventure starring Lonclock At Nick Carter rob
- 1:33you buy a new Port war Oh that's glen. The streets of the big
- 1:37city are strangely silent as a sleek black convertible person way down the boulevard.
- 1:42Suddenly, what's that? Oh? No, they were not some right stop.
- 1:52I'm curious to know why the art museum is all to light it up
- 1:55at three o'clock in the morning. Oh, don't tell me that you're going
- 1:57to stop an investiga. I guess because they're two lifetime I certainly am okay
- 2:02if you go prowl around all by yourself, and I'm gonna stay right here
- 2:07and finish my nap. Yeah that guy, I'll wait here to the plotter
- 2:23eye. Yeah, by something wrong office in I owe you. I'm Nick
- 2:27Carter. Carter, Hey, I've heard of you. Thanks, But what's
- 2:30wrong? Lenny sam Hills of the Night Watch? But here in the museum
- 2:35has been murdered. How you happen to find him? You want duty here?
- 2:38No, No, I'm on the pod detail. So this is on
- 2:40my beat. You see. I go off duty at two o'clock and I'm
- 2:44usually stop in and have a cup of tea with old stam beflock going back
- 2:46to the station, and that's what I did tonight. Yes, well,
- 2:50damn wasn't in the office, so I waited for him, thinking maybe he
- 2:53was making his rounds. Did you hear anything while you were waiting? Not
- 2:55insane, But when he didn't show up after half an hour, I want
- 3:00to look for him. And found him then, Yeah, lying on the
- 3:04floor of the ADSs infection with three bullets in them, and you didn't see
- 3:07anybody, not as soul. The place is deserted, though I called headquarters.
- 3:12Uh huh, do you mind if I take a look at the body?
- 3:14Oh no, come on, I'll tell you where it is. In
- 3:25a pretty santasy, murder is never pretty birth. Yeah, this is rather
- 3:30rod but that you noticed about two of the bullets got him right near the
- 3:35heart. We were apparently fired from a distance in the one of what it
- 3:38killed him looks like. But the third shot, the one on the amber,
- 3:42and that was fired from close up. Say you're right. You can
- 3:45see the powder burns in his vest pocket. Wow, Look what's this?
- 3:50What or what's left of it was in his best pocket. And with the
- 3:53look at that, the bullet shot that stem clean off of it and stopped
- 3:57the watch at exactly two twenty seven. Well that's work. Who we got
- 4:00that time of the murder? Apparently did you look to see whether anything's missing?
- 4:05So I didn't take time. But there's a display case right over here
- 4:10that's pretty badly mashed up, and I'll tell her. Look, I just
- 4:13happened to see it when I was smashed up. All right. Hey,
- 4:15what's that, god say with Carter? That's exhibited from the collection of Tyler
- 4:19van de Breeze. Hey, and he's that rich guy you always hearing about.
- 4:25He's not only rich, he's one of the most famous collectors of Egyptian
- 4:28relics in the world. It's just must be valuable. Huh. Can you
- 4:31tell what's missing? Well, there's a vacant space in the center of the
- 4:34case, but I wouldn't know it was there. I wouldn't find that out
- 4:38in the museum sellers. Then all of first, I when, oh,
- 4:43there's a gun on the floor. That must be the murder weapon. Shouldn't
- 4:46be surprised. I think from the smell of it, I'd say it's been
- 4:50fired very recently. Oh, what's got the viduacase, mister Carter, I'm
- 4:55wondering. I doubt that there are any identifying marks of any kind of misgun.
- 5:00There were, it wouldn't have been left here on the floor. Mm
- 5:03hmm. Three empty shells take somebody's coming with you're here, you know?
- 5:13D you say, that's the museum's reputation and all its fare for it?
- 5:17Hey is that tunic? Nobody else? Maddy? But how come you always
- 5:21seem to beat me to the scene of any crime? I don't not always
- 5:27too bad. They had to drag you out of bed at this on perthly
- 5:30hour medic. Hey, I'll say, oh, make justicious. Missus Steiner
- 5:32curated the museum and the caught how do you do? I picked him up
- 5:36and brought him along to see if anything's been stolen to This is terrible.
- 5:42Such a thing hasn't happened here in twenty years. Eat anything but the boy.
- 5:45You tell us that I'll never hear the end of this. By the
- 5:48way, when you'd we think it's been broken? Open my most valuable collection
- 5:55in our horse Sun the Uncle up the water is gone, the Uncle task
- 6:01Cab, one of mister Benderbrie's most spike the pieces, one of the few
- 6:05remaining Joseph fifth Dynasy regions won by the Princess. I'm in rahat obviously a
- 6:11collectors Adam, then, oh, definitely, only a collector would be interested.
- 6:15You know, how can I everreak you miss, mister debris. God,
- 6:18watch all them things in the next room that don't look like museums,
- 6:23doctor mazingn't. The City College of Science is remodeling their engineering building, and
- 6:28then some of their stuff here store in the next room temporarily. So I
- 6:31do hope nothing else is missing. I'll never be able to hold up my
- 6:35head again. Here my whole life word when I could wait? Now,
- 6:40Bert you go ahead, My men will behave well you got here, so
- 6:45you finally got here? Did the William for your main Finally? You know
- 6:48what I mean? Look, you will go get busy, go over everything,
- 6:53get sing your prints, anything you can find, and have the boys
- 6:56rou the boys gets way of pictures. Yeah, now wait a minute,
- 7:00dots badly come with you. He started down here on here, covers the
- 7:02body and let me get back to bed. Yeah, probably a duck he
- 7:05wasn't gonna make up. Okay, okay, it was shot three times,
- 7:10so I see, what is it that any one of those bullets could have
- 7:16been safe? Off? How long do you think it's been dead? Between
- 7:20two or three hours? I'm safe for sure, But what about those three
- 7:25wounds? They all are like no cause they're not. I'll have to probe
- 7:30for the two bullets in his chest, but the third ones right near the
- 7:33surface. I mean it was fired close to the body, but it didn't
- 7:39go very deep. That's because it's what stopped. It's what I don't say
- 7:44me what I have it here? Took it out of his pocket to examine
- 7:46it. Well, will you look at that? The stem was shot clean
- 7:51off and the rocks were stopped at twenty seven with my India in the world,
- 7:56Are you a high who's that on the floor? The night watchman?
- 8:01Stop by a brother? You will write me there was trouble here? Yes?
- 8:05Better, there was none murder. Well, I guess I've got all
- 8:07I can get here for now, so it's not getting any really very safe
- 8:11obsivation, my comly an efficient young segretary. I should I've done it at
- 8:16once. Good night Mary, see you in the morning. Good morning mate?
- 8:28Why good morning, Pats. She didn't expect you for hours yet?
- 8:31Oh? I was done the sleep play, but I couldn't. I was
- 8:35much too curious to find out about the murder. Uh huh the true professionally,
- 8:39What are you doing now? Oh, I've been going through our file
- 8:43trying to pick out all the crooks would be interested in stealing that presure scared?
- 8:46Would that be a special kind of a crupness. It would, But
- 8:50because in spite of the scared the value, there's a limited demand for such
- 8:54things, he would have to know where to sell it after he stole it.
- 8:56Oh, and there are very few crooks that would know that. How
- 9:00many such crooks have you found? Only three? Danny Mierson, Jim Peterson
- 9:07and Jack Grogan. I don't seem to recognize any of those names. No,
- 9:13I's never had any active connections that I am. Let's see, Danny
- 9:16Meerson is still arerodvas from Senator Johnson's home three years ago in his non state's
- 9:20prison. Now, who's next? Jim Peterson? See, he's doing time
- 9:26in Nevada for forgery and counterfeiting. His sentenced has several years to run yet,
- 9:31and he couldn't have done it. Which leave Jack Groban, wanted on
- 9:33a burglary charge by the Montana police, just appeared six months ago. You
- 9:37need to be dead and none of them could have done it. Suppose you
- 9:41call Madis see whether he knows anything about any of these men, of course,
- 9:46but having any other clue this seems like guesswork. Eliminating suspects is never
- 9:52guess work, better part of the routine work that sells many a case homicide.
- 9:58Roger Madison is, oh, on top of the morning, to you,
- 10:01sergeant, we'd three suspects, Jannerson, Jim Peterson, and Jeff Rogan.
- 10:07A fine collection of crooks. No record show where any of these men
- 10:09are now. Well, Peterson's still in jail as far as I know,
- 10:13like Tony Meerson was let out on pearol three days ago. He says,
- 10:18Mearson's don't prove that's interesting. How about Groven? How about grogn Sergeants,
- 10:22all records Shogren's presumed to be dead. Eh, well we ain't. We've
- 10:26been seen around town the last couple of days. Does Nick think he did
- 10:30it? Oh? And Nick isn't talking yet, not for publication. Well
- 10:33tell him to hurry up. If you don't, I'll go ahead. And
- 10:37so let's take by myself. Oh did you have any good plue? Sergeants?
- 10:41Well I am, it's by of course I do. Good for you.
- 10:46Let Nicks know when you attached the murderer, were you? Are you
- 10:50good? How do you say about Grogan? House, that he's been seen
- 10:54around town in the last few days. Oh no, so Merson is free
- 10:58and Groven's back on circulationing, which gives you a suspect not so good.
- 11:03Wow, Misson's a better suspect than grogn. He'd be needing money if I
- 11:07know him. But he can't haven't picked up or have something to go on,
- 11:11true enough, But I can call on him and see what he has
- 11:15said. Yes, you can find them, I think I can. He
- 11:18always used to say at the old Sampley house, shouldn't be surprised if you
- 11:22were staying there right now. But do you think he'd go back to when
- 11:24all the address after committing a crime like this. From what I know of
- 11:28Danny, he'd be so sure he left no clue that he wouldn't even try
- 11:31to hide. The boy. Should tell Maddy to have his men pick up
- 11:33Grogan and to meet me at the Stampley House in half an hour with a
- 11:35search one. I'll bet we get results on Nick, I give up.
- 11:48There ain't a thing in this room that shows that Danny Meerson ain't been strictly
- 11:52on the up and up. Think he got out. I'm afraid I have
- 11:56to agree with you Mary, Oh that must be down me coming back.
- 12:01No, they were not gonna don't do it. Well, well if it
- 12:07ain't Jack Grogan, Okay, this is darns of your Grogan. Yeah,
- 12:13that's nice about it. Well, I had the boys out looking for you
- 12:18and they couldn't find you. So now you find us, but you're looking
- 12:22for me for just wanted to ask you a few questions by seem about what
- 12:26I suppose we go into that when we get down the headquarters. Okay,
- 12:31you ain't taking me to know. Hey, quarter's cover. Wait, don't
- 12:35be a fool broken. You can't cover a moose? I have done?
- 12:37Huh what have we done? Your mon before I say so, Y'll see
- 12:39if I can cover your boat Rogans look at me. I'm gonna yeah,
- 12:45what can your mind cover? I just want to warn you. Oh with
- 13:00Jack Grogan who showed up at Danny Merrison's room in the old Sampley House,
- 13:03you'll see what this means to Nick and Natty and just the moment. Now
- 13:11back to the gate of the exploded alibi. Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought
- 13:16you by a new post war all that cleanser. When Budge and Mathison invited
- 13:22Jack Grogan to go down the headquarters and talk things over. Jack objected genuously.
- 13:33A nice work, Nick, that did it? Never thought he'd be
- 13:37cool enough to think he could teap the two of us covered, not when
- 13:41we were on opposite sides of the room. Held on, Grogan, get
- 13:43up, Get up? What you're picking a meat for Copper? You just
- 13:48pulled a gun on an office of the law with their hands. H Grogan,
- 13:54what are you doing here? Anyway? Well, Getty and me with
- 13:58He owes me some money. So he dropped into clerk when he wasn't here.
- 14:03Yeah, I thought, maybe, look, you and Nerson wouldn't have
- 14:07been working together on that job last night with just what uh well, we'll
- 14:11talk about that down as headquarters. Are you coming Nick? Oh no,
- 14:16no, I'm not too here yet. Matt. I suppose you would turn
- 14:18Groven over the coppet waiting down stairs and come back. He was, okay,
- 14:20Nick, come on, Droven something now, let's Copper here. Let
- 14:26me see groping and Mierson we're working together. Hebe grop and came back here
- 14:31to go across this and he did that and he something's kidding here? Afterwards?
- 14:41Hey? What well? Hello? Danny Nick Carter, Hey, what
- 14:46are you doing in my room? Quite? Just looking around? Looking around
- 14:50for what? I think you know? Don't try to be killed, Catter.
- 14:56You gotta search one here, we gotta search one. You want to
- 15:00see it? Well, so you're in this soul, you're done right,
- 15:03I am. What do you expect to find here? Something that disappeared from
- 15:07the museum last night? Well you won't find it here. You seem to
- 15:11be right this time, Danny, And we've looked and we haven't found it.
- 15:13Where'd you hide it? See? I don't know what you mean,
- 15:16and I can't answer that. You mean you won't? What's the matter,
- 15:20sir? Didn't you look unhappy? I got my hands, I got a
- 15:24fierce pennich. Didn't get enough sleep last night? Well it's a mass from
- 15:28the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Help yourself. Hey, you I do
- 15:31that? You got a glass? I can't take the stuff without water or
- 15:37I'm sorry, so I don't. But well, I broke the only glass
- 15:41I had this warning. You broke the only glass, Danny. What's that
- 15:45on the shelf behind you? Oh? Yes, I forgot that was Hey,
- 15:50I don't. Oh, I'm sorry, you dging that what's out of
- 15:56my hand? Okay, okay, I'll take it. Danny. You didn't
- 16:00drop that glass accidentally. What do you get not, Nick? For some
- 16:04reason, Danny doesn't want you to have a drink of water. Matter.
- 16:07Maybe he doesn't want to run the water in the beak. Okay, you
- 16:10dope, I just go on the water. Matter, See what happened.
- 16:12Can't you can't do what I I mean here, I'll do it for you.
- 16:18That force that is kind of tricky. Oh yeah, you see you
- 16:22have. I got my gun right in the middle of your back. If
- 16:29you make a move, okay, okay, hey moving, and if your
- 16:32friend tries anything fancy, you'll get it. I understand, Kada, I
- 16:40understand what the proposition Jenny. I just take the thing you've been looking for
- 16:45and get out of here without any interferance. Otherwise you well, I think
- 16:49fair enough. What do you say, Mary, I say you're crazy?
- 16:53Nick, you better let your cinnomatic. Yeah, but I might say the
- 16:56wrong thing. Make Danny thow. Oh, I got a gun on the
- 17:03sage and it's backing my arm on his neck. The other one of you
- 17:06guys tiney way, Nick, I don't get it. I can stick your
- 17:14stangle and if anybody makes them break, don't truck. All right, but
- 17:17that's not your head. Yes, oh no, Now what do you say
- 17:23to you? Don't take your g him get here? H my arm?
- 17:34Call you breaking my arm? I won't break. It's not up your hole.
- 17:38Still, Okay, I know, and I'm like, NI, tell
- 17:45you excuse one. You know I learned that trick a bang on my head
- 17:48against the nose of a guy holding me from behind. But I forgot to
- 17:52tell you my day. You know you're toll My nose is blu. He
- 17:56didn't cover many. Yeah, I want to get to scare of give me
- 18:00it's really here to say? It is that time? It's my guest,
- 18:03I admit, not yet. I don't bet that it's done yet. Here
- 18:07here were here in the wash basin drain. It's a beauty. Are you
- 18:14kidding? You mean that's what we've been looking for? That beatle thing?
- 18:19That's it, Maddy. This is a scarab of Princess amon Ra. Well,
- 18:23the wow, Danny, there was a pretty smart trick to spending this
- 18:26thing in the drain of the wash basin by a thread. So that's why
- 18:30he didn't want us to run the water course. If we did, thread
- 18:33might break. It's all right, the scab just about filled the drain and
- 18:37the water wouldn't have run off as fast as it should. Uh huh,
- 18:41Well, Danny, are you ready to confess? Confess? Why that's your
- 18:45stolen that carib and not off the museum? Watch Now? All you got
- 18:49on me is having stolen goods in my possess. That's the Watchman. I
- 18:52got an alibi? Wow, that's interesting. Yeah, suppose we all go
- 18:57down to headquarters so you can tell us about that alibi of yours. Make
- 19:15you anythink you can prove Danny till that watchman? Oh that depends on how
- 19:19good his alibi is, Paddy. Yeah, But an albi can be faked,
- 19:22can't it can? And I'm positive Danny's is Nick Starter's office Patty Bone
- 19:30speaking Nick air Patrick, Oh yeah, chargeant nigger, Sergey Madison, Oh
- 19:36yeah, matter what have you found out? Look that Danny's alibi is Air
- 19:40Height, Nick. We can't feed it. Are you sure that I'm positive?
- 19:44The Watchman was killed at two twenty seven. Between two ten and two
- 19:48thirty five, Danny was in an all night drug store three miles from a
- 19:52museum. Oris alibi witness is good? Well, the drug store like remembers
- 19:56him. But what's works the cup on the beach stopped in there at coo
- 20:00twenty and talk to him. He knows damning and swears to the time man
- 20:03that just isn't possible. Oh maybe not. But look, next, we
- 20:07got to prove we're right before we can take him before the Grand Jewelry.
- 20:11Okay, okay, I'll find some way now, I hope you can.
- 20:15Next, what's sken say? I'll try so long? What do you say?
- 20:19It? And he's alibi? Is their tight? But I still don't
- 20:25believe it. Kurky could be innocent? Why are you so sure he did
- 20:30it? Made because he started flaring ahead an alibi before he even knew what
- 20:33time the murder occurred. And another thing. The watchman were shot twice from
- 20:37a distance and once close up, but a close up shot to stop that?
- 20:41What add exactly to twenty seven? So what look, Patty? The
- 20:45first two shots killed the Watson. I understand that. Okay, So suppose
- 20:51the killer took the watch out of the dead man's pocket. Better they head
- 20:53to two twenty seven, then put it back in his pocket. And then,
- 20:56in order to stop the watch and also to make it look as though
- 20:59it's not at the exact time of the murder, he shot the watchman a
- 21:03third time. I'm close up. Do you really think that's what happened?
- 21:07I'm sure of it. I gotta find some way to prove it. Oh,
- 21:11I'll say, no jury would believe that story without proof. Oh,
- 21:18Bessie, let's go back to the his ear. Maybe we overlook something that
- 21:22would give us a facts we need. Is there anything else you'd like to
- 21:37see, mister cottam Oh nothing I can think of, mister Stanner, But
- 21:41you still believe this misson is guilty. I'd take my reputation on it.
- 21:47Belief and proof but two very different things. Couldn't you try a lie detector
- 21:51on him? Yes, we could, but unfortunately some jury still believe that
- 21:55a lie detector is only a makeshift and not real evidence. A clever lawyer
- 21:59can sometimes talk as client out of the results of a life detector test.
- 22:02I suppose they think a wiggly line running across at chart doesn't really mean anything.
- 22:06Definitely ridiculous. Any scientist now instet of than met and pick the seismographs.
- 22:11For example, I look at it every morning at wiggly line you call
- 22:15it. Do you have a seismograph here in the museum? Like, yeah,
- 22:18it's part of the apparatus City College of Science, stored in the next
- 22:22room. Of course. I remember now that you mentioned something, and the
- 22:25head is running, ye, and I want to say it quick. I
- 22:30see that seismograph is going to prove that Danny Maerson's guilty of murder. Well
- 22:41that's a new wrinkle, a seismograph used as proof in a murder case.
- 22:47Just how Nicked plans to use this information we'll find out in just a moment.
- 22:56Now for the conclusion of the case of the at Alibi, the day's
- 23:00adventure with Nick Carter bought you buy a new post war all that's glendor.
- 23:07The Dean is Bugeant Mathieson's office at police headquarters. The sergeant and Nick are
- 23:11discussing Danny Meerson's case with Danny and his lawyer, mister Carter, I demand
- 23:17to know why my client, mister Mierson, is being featured. Likely he's
- 23:19admitted to be a receiver of stolen goods, but he's guilty of nothing else.
- 23:23Mister Amiley, you claim that Danny couldn't have stilled in the scab and
- 23:29kill the watchman because at the time the murder and theft were committed, he
- 23:33was at a drug store some three miles from the museum. It's absolutely the
- 23:37rick, mister Emiley. The watchman was apparently killed at two twenty seven,
- 23:41if we can judge by the time he's watched up. But actually he was
- 23:45killed exactly one hour and twelve minutes before the time shown on the watch.
- 23:49Why that's impossible. What will turn The watchman's timepiece was set ahead by Merson
- 23:55to establish an alibi for himself, and I have positive proof of that back
- 23:57a line. Certainly. Is it absolutely ridiculous? Is it? All?
- 24:03The evidence I'm talking about is unemotional, truthful and positive. At a seismographic
- 24:07shark? What's that here? What in the name of this saint is the
- 24:12size earth? A seismographic shark? Yeah, what you say, I'll tell
- 24:17you, Maddie. Yes. In the room next to the Egyptian collection in
- 24:19a museum, there's an instrument used to detect earthquake tremors. It's called the
- 24:23sidemograph, and it's so sensitive it will require the slightest disturb My dear mister
- 24:29Carter, I can't you were in a minute, Miss Ramblay. I have
- 24:32here a shot that was made by the sizemograph last night. Let me show
- 24:37you what I said, which is hardly tony. There was murder. Now.
- 24:41Look at twelve forty five, there was a slight tremor, a trembling
- 24:45of the earth, probably due to some very distant earthquakes. What do you
- 24:48know? At one oh five, five minutes past one, there were two
- 24:52sharp eruptions in the immediate vicinity. I can't say exactly what caused them,
- 24:57but they're probably due to blasting in the neighborhood or took gunshots in the immediate
- 25:03vicinity. There was no blasting done last night. Get to a point,
- 25:08mister Carter. My time is valuable, so it's human life, Emily.
- 25:14I'll notice the shot shows that at one seventeen, twelve minutes later, there
- 25:18was another sharp report just like the previous ones. But from then on until
- 25:23fifteen minutes before six, the line made by the seismograph shows nothing whatever out
- 25:29of the ordinary. Then there were no shots fired at the museum between one
- 25:33seventeen and five forty five yesterday morning. That's right, medic and that means
- 25:38that the watchman was shot and killed at five minutes past one. The killer
- 25:42then took the watch out of the dead man's pocket and set it ahead to
- 25:45two twenty seven, and then shot him again at one seventeen, and that
- 25:48gave him plenty of time to get to the drug store and set up an
- 25:52armor. I see here. That doesn't mean no, waste your breast and
- 25:56bely, it happened just the way they said. I've got away with it
- 26:00if it wasn't that. I call it a truth machine, Benny, because
- 26:04that's what it really is. It tells the truth, and a this case
- 26:08makes others tell the truth too, That's true. A great cliche, Yes,
- 26:15a great machine. Welcome back. Well, this is pretty much is
- 26:32the weakest reason for Nick getting involved in investigation. Something looks suspicious and he
- 26:37just decides to investigate, even though he has nothing to do with this museum.
- 26:41And if you're successful, I guess that's how you get to be the
- 26:45greatest of all manhunters. I do like the mystery overall. The cracked watch
- 26:52is a bizarre thing mystery writer's like to do, and it's something that I
- 26:56wonder about. I haven't seen anything in a few decades, but you can
- 27:02follow this, you know, into the nineteen seventies and episodes of Colombo.
- 27:07They were still doing it, and it's a classic false clue. I have
- 27:11yet to see a mystery where a broken watch and that the time on it
- 27:15actually represents the time of death. It's invariably a red herring, and I
- 27:22can't imagine anyone doing it in real life unless they do it at the correct
- 27:26time, hoping that the detective has seen a lot of movies and will conclude
- 27:32that it's a false clue. Using the seismograph was clever, and that does
- 27:37sound pretty plausible to me. But I'm a bit of a layman on this
- 27:40subject, as I am on most so anyone who is an expert on whether
- 27:45this is plausible or not plausible, I'd love to hear from you. I
- 27:48definitely do hope we're able to get into some episodes soon that have better sound
- 27:53quality. Like I said, the episode was itself was good, but whoever
- 27:59ed it just got hacked to pieces before we got it. So I'm sorry
- 28:03about the sound quality on these, but it's the best I can find.
- 28:07So appreciate your patience well that we do have a couple listener comments and feedback
- 28:12really quick, and we have a comment from David Over on Facebook. Hi,
