Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. Hello everyone, my name is
- 0:29Chanel Price and I'm excited. To talk about.
- 0:31Racing the indoor 800 meter in 2014, I became the first
- 0:38American woman to win the 800 at a World Championships when I won
- 0:43the gold medal at indoor. Worlds which were which?
- 0:46Were held in SOPA, Poland. Funny enough, I came in second
- 0:51place in every single 800 race I ran that 2014 indoor season.
- 0:57Right up until that. Final at indoor worlds I
- 1:00remember the night before the world final, I spoke to my
- 1:03coach. Renowned Middle.
- 1:05Distance coach JJ Clark. And he said, Chanel, I've been
- 1:09studying all of your eight hundreds this indoor season,
- 1:13watching the videos, trying to. Figure out.
- 1:16Why you're getting caught at the line?
- 1:19I think you're pressing too much.
- 1:21The 3rd 200 just come off the. Throttle a tad bit that. 3rd 200
- 1:27and you'll have a stronger finish coming home.
- 1:29That last? 50 meters, they aren't going to
- 1:33be able to catch you tomorrow. And he was.
- 1:36Right, I listened to coach. JJ and ended up winning the 800
- 1:40meter title. So here's what I've.
- 1:43Learned from many many, many years of racing the indoor 800.
- 1:48For those of you. Who don't know the indoor 800
- 1:51is? 4 laps as opposed to two laps
- 1:54outdoor. Therefore, you're running a lot
- 1:57more turns indoor, and the turns are much tighter indoor than
- 2:02outdoor. This actually favors.
- 2:05Runners like me. Who are what we like to.
- 2:07Call frontrunners. Frontrunners are those.
- 2:10Who like to get out front? From the start of the race and.
- 2:13Dictate the pace. Front and running the 800 indoor
- 2:16is not the only way to run the indoor 800.
- 2:20But it's not a bad idea if it's. Something you're comfortable?
- 2:24With because it takes a lot of effort to pass people.
- 2:27On the indoor track, I front ran the 800 at Indoor World in 2014
- 2:34and if you watch. The video there were plenty of
- 2:36times. When my competitors looked like
- 2:39they wanted to go around me, but I just didn't let them.
- 2:43That's the beauty. In front running you can
- 2:45control. The race.
- 2:47And there's no win to battle. Like when you.
- 2:49Front run in outdoor races. But regardless if you decide to.
- 2:54Front run or not the goal in that.
- 2:56First lap. Of the indoor 800.
- 3:00Is to get out and. Establish your position.
- 3:04When the gun goes off, you'll want to take off pretty hard,
- 3:07not an all out. Sprint, of course, but about 80.
- 3:105 to 90% effort. Now if they have you starting in
- 3:14lanes, you'll stay in your lane the entire 1st 50 meters or the
- 3:18entire first turn and then you'll do.
- 3:21What they call? Break in, breaking in is when
- 3:24you. Are allowed to leave.
- 3:26Your lane and make your. Way to the.
- 3:28Inside rail or in other words make your way to lane one
- 3:33breaking in can be. Pretty dangerous with a lot of.
- 3:36Pushing and shoving and sometimes tripping and falling.
- 3:40So you have to stay alert. Once everyone has broken in and
- 3:45established their position, the. Pace will settle in.
- 3:49No matter where you end up in the pack of runners, don't
- 3:53panic. There's still.
- 3:54A lot of race left. Try to remain as.
- 3:57Close as possible. As you can to the inside.
- 4:01Rail. Don't run out in lane two.
- 4:04You're running extra if you run in lane 2, Stay in lane one now
- 4:10during the second lap. Try to stay.
- 4:13Nice and relaxed. The pace should still.
- 4:16Feel pretty comfortable. Some people around you may be
- 4:19making all kinds of moves to get into better positioning.
- 4:23Don't do. That that's wasted.
- 4:24Energy. Just hold your ground.
- 4:27Keep hugging. The Rail, AJ.
- 4:30Wilson did an awesome job of this when she won the 2022 World
- 4:35Indoor 800 meter title she was in. 4th or 5th place The first.
- 4:39Lap and didn't panic during the second lap.
- 4:42She stayed. She stayed right where she.
- 4:44Was didn't make any unnecessary moves because she knew.
- 4:48There was still a lot of race left.
- 4:53During the third. Lap you.
- 4:55Still want to remain calm and nice and.
- 4:58Relaxed but this. Is when you'll want to.
- 5:01Tell yourself to stay alert. You'll want to focus on
- 5:06maintaining that same. Speed that you have.
- 5:09Been running. But there's a.
- 5:11Fine line between maintaining and pressing.
- 5:16That's what Coach JJ realized I was.
- 5:18Doing during my. 3rd lap all. Season when I kept coming in
- 5:22second. Place I was.
- 5:23Pressing the third lap, getting. Tight it was.
- 5:27Taking away from my kick during the final.
- 5:30Lap, which we'll talk about soon.
- 5:32But in the indoor? Title.
- 5:34That I won. I stayed relaxed the.
- 5:39Best runners are able to run. Fast while staying, while while
- 5:42while also. Staying relaxed, but you're
- 5:45going to have to train your. Body.
- 5:47To do this you have to run fast but relaxed.
- 5:51And practice so you can start to naturally.
- 5:54Do. So in your races.
- 5:57But again. During that 3rd 200 of the
- 6:01indoor 800 meter. You.
- 6:04Want. To start telling yourself, yeah,
- 6:06OK, be alert. I want to maintain, but I'm
- 6:09going to stay relaxed. I'm not going to press, I'm not
- 6:11going to start my kick early, right?
- 6:15I'm just going to try to maintain this.
- 6:19Speed that I've. Been going and as you're coming
- 6:22into. The.
- 6:24Final lap. That's when you'll want to start
- 6:26thinking about positioning. You.
- 6:29Have to remember though, everyone is thinking about
- 6:32positioning at this point in the race, so if you're going to make
- 6:36a move coming into that final lap, make it a definitive move.
- 6:42AJ Wilson did a. Beautiful job of this when she
- 6:45won her indoor 800 meter title. I know I keep bringing her race
- 6:49up, but it truly was like the perfect.
- 6:51Indoor 800 meter run. You should definitely check it
- 6:54out. It's on.
- 6:54YouTube anyway coming into that final.
- 6:57Straightaway of the third lap, Ajay was still in about fourth
- 7:01place, but she starts. To move.
- 7:03Wide to get. Around the runners in front of
- 7:06her and then going into. That last lap.
- 7:08She makes the strongest move to the front.
- 7:11No hesitation? No.
- 7:13Fear, she searched. The front and never.
- 7:15Looked back. So if you're going to make a
- 7:17move. Like like like that it has.
- 7:19To be definitive if you watch my world indoor race.
- 7:23I was. Still in the front coming into.
- 7:27The last lap into that 4th lap. And I knew the runners were
- 7:30going to try to make a move to get around me coming into that
- 7:33final lap, but I didn't let them.
- 7:35Their move wasn't strong enough to overtake me it.
- 7:38Has to be kind of. It has to be a.
- 7:40Forceful move to the front if you're going to do it.
- 7:44So if you're in the front going into the final lap, stand your
- 7:47ground. Be alert.
- 7:48If you're not in the front, make a strong move.
- 7:51To get there. And then that final lap is all.
- 7:54About. Trusting your training and
- 7:57kicking to the finish. Again, stay nice and relaxed.
- 8:01I'm going to keep saying that. Stay.
- 8:02Nice and relaxed. While also winding up.
- 8:07Your kick to the. Finish.
- 8:09I know, I know every coach is going to have a different.
- 8:11Philosophy. Philosophy for this, but with
- 8:14coach JJ used to call it. Wind move and punch so that at
- 8:201:50 to go I'm winding up at 100 meters to go I'm moving and at
- 8:25the 50 meters ago I'm punching. And if you can see.
- 8:29The if you. Watch my race, you can see that
- 8:31last fifty. I was running like a dog was
- 8:33chasing me. That was my punch.
- 8:35But. That was something we did in
- 8:36practice, like every day. We ended our training with a
- 8:40wind move punch 150 so that when it came to races I naturally
- 8:45wind moved and punched and so again.
- 8:48What you do? In training is going to.
- 8:51Correlate to your. Races, it's not just going to
- 8:54automatically happen on race day.
- 8:56So training, training, training is fair, very important, and
- 9:02I'll say. This in that last lap as you're.
- 9:06Doing your kick? Keep your shoulders.
- 9:08Relax your face loose. And when your.
- 9:11Legs get tired, go to your. Arms, arms, arms, arms will get
- 9:16you to that finish line. And don't forget to run all the
- 9:20way. Through the.
- 9:21Line. Now, as I mentioned earlier, I
- 9:25came in second place. In.
- 9:28Every single Andrew meter I ran leading up to that world indoor
- 9:31final, right, I had to be very mentally strong to stand on that
- 9:37finish line and during that final, sorry to stand on that
- 9:40start line during that final and still.
- 9:43Believe that I. Could win.
- 9:46And I say. That because the mental side of
- 9:48the. Sport is just.
- 9:49As important as. The physical side.
- 9:52Having a short term memory is crucial.
- 9:56I was not standing on that line thinking about all of those
- 9:59races that I had lost, right? It wasn't the time or the place
- 10:02to. Think about.
- 10:03That I was standing on that line confident, you know, I didn't
- 10:07let those. Past races discourage.
- 10:09Me. I knew I had put in the work.
- 10:11I knew I was. Fit.
- 10:13I knew I was. Ready, right?
- 10:15I trusted my training and I also trusted my coach.
- 10:19His advice to back off a little that 3rd 2. 100 scared me a
- 10:24little bit, I'm not going to lie, but I.
- 10:26Trusted his expertise. So that's the thing, you have
- 10:29to. Believe in yourself and you.
- 10:30Also have to. Believe in your.
- 10:32Coach that's. Crucial to running any race, not
- 10:36just the indoor 800. It doesn't matter how ready.
- 10:39You are physically if you're if you've already psyched.
- 10:42Yourself out mentally. Now I'm a big, big advocate for
- 10:47mental. Health especially.
- 10:48Athlete mental health, it's something I've struggled with
- 10:52and I'm. Very, very passionate about
- 10:54Maybe I'll do. Another video down the road
- 10:57focusing on mental health, right.
- 11:00But in the meantime, if you're an athlete or a parent or a.
- 11:05Coach. And you're interested in finding
- 11:07ways to. Support to support.
- 11:09Your athletes mentally check out on Rise.
- 11:13That's ONR. ISE.
- 11:17On Rise is an organization where current athletes can receive
- 11:20mental health guidance from former athletes.
- 11:24I'm currently a mental health specialist for On Rise and it
- 11:29is. So so.
- 11:30Incredibly powerful. To see the type of support that
- 11:37former athletes can give to to. To current.
- 11:41Athletes, because we've been there, we get it.
- 11:44You know, we, we've done that, we understand.
- 11:46And so it's a. It's a really, really cool.
- 11:48Setup. If you want to learn more, check
- 11:51out on. Rise dot care.
- 11:54That's on. Rise dot care.
- 11:57Anyway, I've taken. Up enough of your.
- 11:58Time. That's all folks.
- 12:01Thank you for listening. I hope you took something out
- 12:04of. This video of.
