- 0:01Speaker 1: A great life does not happen on accident. A great
- 0:04Speaker 1: life is going to be driven by your intentional choices.
- 0:07Speaker 1: What you repeatedly do, the things that you believe in life.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's a lens for your future. What you focus on
- 0:14Speaker 1: is going to determine where you're going to go. What
- 0:17Speaker 1: you repeatedly do is who you're going to become. Who
- 0:20Speaker 1: you hang out with is going to determine what's right
- 0:22Speaker 1: for you. When you tolerate the wrong things, you're going
- 0:25Speaker 1: to get wrong in your life. And when you won't
- 0:27Speaker 1: stand for anything that isn't right, you're going to see
- 0:30Speaker 1: more righteousness in your life.
- 0:32Speaker 2: That's impossible. Let me tell you what I believe.
- 0:35Speaker 1: What's your weakness is not your technique.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Don't think you know you the Impossible Life Podcast. I
- 0:46Speaker 2: mean you're sitting on a winning lottery tech, an idea
- 0:49Speaker 2: that is fully formed, fully understood.
- 0:52Speaker 1: That sticks. This is the Impossible Life Podcast because Nick
- 0:58Speaker 1: and I are attempting to live impossible lives. What we
- 1:02Speaker 1: know is that nothing is impossible. So instead of using
- 1:06Speaker 1: impossible as an excuse to not try, we'll use the
- 1:09Speaker 1: pursuit of impossible as an accelerant for greatness. If something's
- 1:14Speaker 1: never been done before. That just means it's unexplored. If
- 1:18Speaker 1: they tell you it's too hard, it's just waiting to
- 1:21Speaker 1: be simplified. Impossible as a default label used by uncourageous
- 1:26Speaker 1: people unwilling to take a risk. The real truth is
- 1:30Speaker 1: this The solution to any impossible task. Starts with this question,
- 1:35Speaker 1: if I had to what would it take? What would
- 1:38Speaker 1: it take?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of the Impossible Life Podcast. I'm
- 1:45Speaker 2: your co host, Nick Surface, and I'm looking across at
- 1:46Speaker 2: a man so intentional he has after action reports for
- 1:49Speaker 2: his wife after every meal. That's right, friends, Garrett Nuckleback,
- 1:57Speaker 2: a man who is relentless in his pursuit of the
- 2:00Speaker 2: perfect meal.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Feedback is the breakfast of champions.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Feedback is the breakfast champions, and you are very liberal
- 2:07Speaker 2: with how you give it to the people close to you.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I make the best breakfast, do you?
- 2:12Speaker 2: It's feedback, yos. We've got a new breakfast Cereal coming
- 2:16Speaker 2: out in five years. No, we don't gee. Today we
- 2:19Speaker 2: are going to dive into what shapes your life. This
- 2:24Speaker 2: is a really interesting episode for me because I remember
- 2:27Speaker 2: when I went back to the UK after being away.
- 2:29Speaker 2: The first time I went back I remember there was
- 2:32Speaker 2: the famous dinner that we had where your wife told
- 2:34Speaker 2: me that I was being weak for not going back
- 2:35Speaker 2: with my family, and the way she delivered that feedback
- 2:38Speaker 2: to me was a hilarious b it was also very effective.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So I have never missed a trip back and we
- 2:44Speaker 2: will continue to do that.
- 2:46Speaker 1: So I think many people would look at what shapes
- 2:49Speaker 1: their life and they would think of the time period
- 2:52Speaker 1: I'm born in, right, the genetics I was born with,
- 2:55Speaker 1: the level of wealth, the level of education, or the
- 2:58Speaker 1: family I was born into. Certainly those things do affect
- 3:01Speaker 1: your life. But what we're going to talk about today
- 3:03Speaker 1: is the predominant things that shape your life that also
- 3:06Speaker 1: you have a hand in. Yeah, Because there's so much
- 3:08Speaker 1: yeah you don't control. We're going to, as as we
- 3:11Speaker 1: always do, We're going to focus on what can we control.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah, because that was my big takeaway. I went back
- 3:15Speaker 2: to the UK because if you know my story, and
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think it's on episode ninety eight you can listen
- 3:19Speaker 2: to it or ninety seven. I did not thrive in
- 3:22Speaker 2: the UK, and so I didn't want to go back
- 3:24Speaker 2: because it was a pain, a place of great pain
- 3:26Speaker 2: and misery for me, which is one of the reasons
- 3:28Speaker 2: why I wasn't going back until your wife lovingly corrected
- 3:31Speaker 2: me at you Yeah, thanks, bro, appreciate it what she said,
- 3:35Speaker 2: that's not what she said, but she did what she
- 3:37Speaker 2: said in other words, in nicer words. Yeah. Anyways, let
- 3:41Speaker 2: me get my story here, dude. So the point is,
- 3:43Speaker 2: but when I went back, I remember I had this
- 3:44Speaker 2: really big revelation at work because for whatever reason, I remember,
- 3:46Speaker 2: you were encouraging. You're like, dude, go back, like you're different.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think you're going to see different things. And so
- 3:51Speaker 2: I remember when I was there, I was like, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 2: if I had to live here, what would I do differently?
- 3:54Speaker 2: Because all the reasons I didn't like it were the weather,
- 3:57Speaker 2: I don't really like the cynicism of the people. I
- 3:59Speaker 2: had all these things that I didn't really like about
- 4:02Speaker 2: the place. And it wasn't until I got there and
- 4:05Speaker 2: I realized. I was like, man, you cultivate your life
- 4:07Speaker 2: the same way that you cultivate you want the way
- 4:10Speaker 2: you want to grow anything. And I always use the example,
- 4:11Speaker 2: if you want to grow an orange tree in Montana,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you better build a greenhouse, right. Well, hey, what do
- 4:16Speaker 2: you want to grow in your life? Whatever it is
- 4:18Speaker 2: you got to build it. So we're going to dive
- 4:20Speaker 2: into that today, g and I'm very much looking forward
- 4:22Speaker 2: to it. I think there's so many things in our life.
- 4:25Speaker 2: One of the things I think it's so amazing is
- 4:27Speaker 2: obviously God is eternal, and so he sees things on
- 4:29Speaker 2: a timeline. A. He exists outside of time. I think
- 4:33Speaker 2: it's very easy for God to see like A connects
- 4:35Speaker 2: to B. And I think for us we don't even
- 4:37Speaker 2: recognize where A is because we're just like, man, this
- 4:39Speaker 2: thing is just here, and for a lot of us
- 4:41Speaker 2: we stop question it. Great example of this is the
- 4:43Speaker 2: forty hour work week. Have you ever wondered why forty
- 4:46Speaker 2: hours a week is considered full time employment in the
- 4:49Speaker 2: United States.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I saw a video the other day. They cracked me up,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and it was it was a blue collar reference and
- 4:57Speaker 1: a guy talked, you know, his boss is telling him
- 5:00Speaker 1: you got to show up, you know, you got to
- 5:01Speaker 1: be here from nine to five, and it's like, I
- 5:02Speaker 1: didn't know this was a part time job, right. Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 1: People have different frames of what for it. For some people,
- 5:09Speaker 1: forty hours is like, gosh, I don't I don't have
- 5:11Speaker 1: time to live my life.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:13Speaker 1: For other people forty hours, Like, that's it, that's like
- 5:15Speaker 1: half of it.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Well, the industrialized work week was like seventy hours minimum
- 5:19Speaker 2: when they started, right, And that's because you were dealing with.
- 5:21Speaker 1: A bunch of the farmers. What was the work week
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know a couple thousand years ago? Right, Yeah, you work,
- 5:26Speaker 1: he's one hundred to one hundred and twenty hours a week.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Your life was there to work.
- 5:30Speaker 1: That was the point of the sabbath, was you know,
- 5:34Speaker 1: take Sunday afternoon and just rest. Yeah, because you worked
- 5:38Speaker 1: from sun up to sundown Monday to Saturday.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and that in the eighteen hundreds, factory employees were
- 5:44Speaker 2: ten to fourteen hours a day, six days a week, right,
- 5:46Speaker 2: And so it's just like that's just what we do, man,
- 5:48Speaker 2: Like we were working. What does that work out to
- 5:50Speaker 2: be like eighty two or sixty to eighty hours minimum?
- 5:53Speaker 2: And it just it keeps plowing through. Well, in the
- 5:57Speaker 2: timeline of how we got here, it always starts with
- 5:59Speaker 2: the thought process. Right. In eighteen seventeen, there was a
- 6:01Speaker 2: guy named Robert Owen who was a Welsh industrialist, and
- 6:04Speaker 2: he came up with the amazing slogan of eight hours labor,
- 6:07Speaker 2: eight hours recreation eight hours rest, right, like just divide
- 6:10Speaker 2: the day. You've probably all seen that viral clip of
- 6:13Speaker 2: what's his name? Who's like, I live four lives because
- 6:16Speaker 2: I lived three days?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, who is that?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's well that was Robert Owen probably did that,
- 6:24Speaker 2: but it didn't go viral back then. So anyways, in
- 6:26Speaker 2: the eighteen sixty to eighteen eighties, at this point you
- 6:28Speaker 2: got all these workers, it becomes the labor movement happens,
- 6:31Speaker 2: and in nineteen fourteen, your favorite guy, Henry Ford, like reduce.
- 6:36Speaker 2: He moves workers away from a nine hour shift to
- 6:39Speaker 2: an eight hour work day and raises their wages.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:41Speaker 2: He was the first mass company to say, you know what,
- 6:43Speaker 2: we're going to do this now. One of the things
- 6:45Speaker 2: that motivated was he realized if you only had them
- 6:47Speaker 2: working eight hours to day, they became consumers, so they
- 6:49Speaker 2: would want to buy cars and drive. So, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 2: he was not a he was a shrewd man.
- 6:53Speaker 1: He wasn't well, he wasn't thinking about next year. He
- 6:56Speaker 1: was thinking about the future.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Right, Well, that's exactly right, and so he see how
- 7:00Speaker 2: this would fit in. Well, then, so he adopted He
- 7:03Speaker 2: also adopted a five day work week, and then in
- 7:05Speaker 2: nineteen thirty eight. So at this point, you know, it
- 7:07Speaker 2: starts as an idea. One big company takes the idea
- 7:10Speaker 2: and goes, you know what, we're crazy enough to do it.
- 7:11Speaker 2: And then in nineteen thirty eight, the Fair Labor Standards
- 7:14Speaker 2: Act comes in and they say that they set the
- 7:16Speaker 2: overtime threshold. They don't put a limit, they just say
- 7:18Speaker 2: forty four hours per week. And then in nineteen forty
- 7:21Speaker 2: forty hours became the standard as part of the Fair
- 7:24Speaker 2: Labor Standard Acts threshold they changed the threshold and now
- 7:28Speaker 2: it's mandated, as you know, you employed people they work
- 7:30Speaker 2: more than forty hours a week and they have the
- 7:32Speaker 2: designation of non exempt employees, they have to be paid overtime.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that means your hourly folks, you got to pay them.
- 7:38Speaker 1: If they go over forty, well, you salary folks get
- 7:40Speaker 1: back in there.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah. That's and that's how they found their way around it.
- 7:43Speaker 2: They're like, i' gon't to invent this great thing where
- 7:44Speaker 2: we just agree up front on salary. But like, so
- 7:47Speaker 2: there's a story, and when I lay it out for you,
- 7:49Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, of course that makes sense. But this
- 7:52Speaker 2: is stuff in our life all the time. I think
- 7:54Speaker 2: if you walked around said hey, why is forty hours
- 7:55Speaker 2: a week full time? Most people would be like, you know,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you might get somebody that knows if they're in HR
- 8:00Speaker 2: or if they've done any payroll stuff, they go, well,
- 8:02Speaker 2: that's what's mandated, but that still wouldn't answer the question
- 8:04Speaker 2: of why they got to that number. And I think
- 8:07Speaker 2: there's so many things in our life that are like
- 8:09Speaker 2: that where we've stopped questioning what they are, we not
- 8:12Speaker 2: really realized that we have any influence on them to
- 8:15Speaker 2: the point that you made, and so we're just like, well,
- 8:16Speaker 2: that's just the way it is.
- 8:18Speaker 1: The point that Nick is making is there's things that
- 8:21Speaker 1: you might not be thinking about that are shaping your life.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And today we're going to give you those points. It's
- 8:26Speaker 2: like my man John Lennon said, life is what happens
- 8:29Speaker 2: when you're busy making other plans. He said that famously
- 8:31Speaker 2: in one of his songs called Beautiful Boy, which is
- 8:33Speaker 2: a great song, and I've heard that quoted many times
- 8:35Speaker 2: because that really is for a lot of people, that's
- 8:37Speaker 2: what happens. Make all these plans. The next thing you know,
- 8:39Speaker 2: they're pretty old and they're looking back and going, wow,
- 8:40Speaker 2: where'd it go so g we're gonna dive. Then you
- 8:44Speaker 2: have lovingly given seven things that shape your life. And
- 8:49Speaker 2: you know it's such as Sobmery thought. I saw a
- 8:51Speaker 2: Hormosy quote on this, and it's something that to really
- 8:53Speaker 2: think about. You know, we're gonna die and for whatever
- 8:56Speaker 2: we're doing right now, right like, for all this stuff,
- 8:59Speaker 2: I don't know what age cares. Well, no, that's not
- 9:01Speaker 2: the leg Okay, let me let me take this. Tomans
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah that no, well though his lens is yeah, nobody
- 9:07Speaker 2: cares to do what you want, which I I don't
- 9:10Speaker 2: necessarily agree with that thought Well, no, not necessarily I
- 9:12Speaker 2: don't agree with that thought process. There is a god,
- 9:14Speaker 2: it's not you. Uh so you got to find it's
- 9:16Speaker 2: not just do what you want, but you're gonna die.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And what's so crazy? For all the stuff that you're
- 9:21Speaker 2: worried about, wherever you're at in your life, your life's
- 9:23Speaker 2: going to be summed up in two to three paragraphs,
- 9:26Speaker 2: and a lot of it is going to be factual
- 9:27Speaker 2: based off the decisions you made that you had no
- 9:29Speaker 2: idea the amount of impact they would have where you
- 9:32Speaker 2: were born. Obviously you didn't choose that. But then who
- 9:34Speaker 2: you married, how many kids you had, your hobbies, what
- 9:37Speaker 2: you did for a living, or any organizations you significantly
- 9:40Speaker 2: contributed to. That's what's going to be read out at
- 9:42Speaker 2: your funeral, which is wild. People are not going to
- 9:45Speaker 2: read your credit score, your GPA, or your followers on
- 9:47Speaker 2: social media. They're literally just going to give a summary
- 9:50Speaker 2: review in two to three law and that's your life.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And for a lot of people, that's that's the last
- 9:54Speaker 2: that's one of the last times that they'll be truly recognized,
- 9:57Speaker 2: and after that they're just forgotten about. Now that can
- 9:59Speaker 2: sound incredibly depressing, and we're not the depressing cynical podcast,
- 10:02Speaker 2: because what we know is that that you're going to
- 10:04Speaker 2: step into eternity and you're going to give an account
- 10:06Speaker 2: for your life. Like the parable of the Talents with
- 10:08Speaker 2: the Steward, we're all gonna be judging, We're gonna have
- 10:11Speaker 2: to we're gonna have to give an account to God
- 10:12Speaker 2: for what we've done. And I don't know exactly how
- 10:15Speaker 2: eternity it works, but Jesus gave so many examples of
- 10:18Speaker 2: what you did on this earth leads to what you
- 10:20Speaker 2: do into eternity. That puts so much more significance on
- 10:23Speaker 2: what we do, and so for all these things that
- 10:26Speaker 2: are just you know, how did my life get to
- 10:27Speaker 2: where I am? Like, I look around? What did I do?
- 10:30Speaker 2: You have made some decisions or whether you were aware
- 10:33Speaker 2: of them or unaware of them, that are influencing you
- 10:35Speaker 2: and directing where your life is headed. And we want
- 10:37Speaker 2: you to really be able to take hold of those.
- 10:40Speaker 1: There's times when you're driving down the road and you know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: you just kind of like it's scary for a second,
- 10:47Speaker 1: You're like, oh my gosh, where was I Yeah, right
- 10:49Speaker 1: in the car. You know you're another especially on like
- 10:51Speaker 1: long road trips or if you commute on a daily basis,
- 10:54Speaker 1: it's like I'm five x. It's further than the last
- 10:57Speaker 1: time I remember consciousness, Like where where? Where did I
- 11:00Speaker 1: just go?
- 11:01Speaker 2: That's me driving to your house at five point thirty
- 11:03Speaker 2: on a Sunday morning, right.
- 11:04Speaker 1: That happens to us all the time. Yeah, and this
- 11:06Speaker 1: happens in your life. You know, this happens in your
- 11:08Speaker 1: life where it's like, man, where did the last year go?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Where did the last few years go? Where maybe it's
- 11:13Speaker 1: not like you crashed, but you're just thinking like I
- 11:16Speaker 1: was not really mindful of what was happening in that
- 11:18Speaker 1: season right there right What I want to talk about
- 11:21Speaker 1: today is really one of the things that is the
- 11:25Speaker 1: example of how you have you got to keep your
- 11:27Speaker 1: hands on the wheel, right, hands on the wheel, know
- 11:29Speaker 1: where you're going. If you are not paying attention to
- 11:32Speaker 1: these things, then you are essentially hands off the wheel.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And none of these I think are going to be
- 11:39Speaker 1: like revelational. Really, what this episode is meant to be
- 11:43Speaker 1: is to be a reminder of if I'm not being
- 11:45Speaker 1: intentional in each one of these areas, We're going to
- 11:48Speaker 1: talk about what it is. We're going to talk about
- 11:49Speaker 1: how it shapes your life if we're If I'm not
- 11:52Speaker 1: being intentional in each one of these areas, then I'm
- 11:55Speaker 1: just cruising down the road and my life is going
- 11:57Speaker 1: to end up in a certain place. Here's what I
- 11:59Speaker 1: know for me, and here's what I believe for so
- 12:02Speaker 1: many the people that listen to this podcast. You want
- 12:04Speaker 1: everything that God has for you in this life. You
- 12:07Speaker 1: want to reach your fullest potential, and you don't want
- 12:10Speaker 1: to live a wasted life. If you don't want to
- 12:12Speaker 1: live a wasted life, you have to utilize every day,
- 12:15Speaker 1: every opportunity that's given to you. And so really what
- 12:18Speaker 1: this is is like, this is seven things that be
- 12:22Speaker 1: intentional in these things. And I would also like some
- 12:24Speaker 1: of you may be like, oh, yeah, like I do that,
- 12:27Speaker 1: but like be more. I got to be more intentional
- 12:29Speaker 1: about that because this is what's driving my life. Yeah, okay,
- 12:32Speaker 1: So here we go. Seven ways to shape your life.
- 12:36Speaker 1: These are the things that are going to determine what
- 12:38Speaker 1: your future looks like. This is a big one here.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I got to start here. This is something we talk
- 12:43Speaker 1: about all the time. But what's going to shape your
- 12:45Speaker 1: life is what you believe. Right, Remember what beliefs are.
- 12:48Speaker 1: There's things that you know are true but cannot prove right.
- 12:53Speaker 1: This is like, hey, I you know one of the
- 12:55Speaker 1: ways I've said it recently that I think is a
- 12:57Speaker 1: great lens for it is you. Everybody believes, or not everybody,
- 13:01Speaker 1: but a lot of people especially, I would say nearly
- 13:03Speaker 1: everybody who listens to this show. You believe God has
- 13:06Speaker 1: a plan. But do you believe God has a plan
- 13:09Speaker 1: for you? Right? You've got to believe in that. What
- 13:13Speaker 1: you believe, what you build your life on, what you're
- 13:16Speaker 1: willing to bet on, it's going to determine what your
- 13:19Speaker 1: future looks like. Beliefs shape the lens through which you
- 13:22Speaker 1: see everything else in your life. Every way you look
- 13:25Speaker 1: at your life, like the way that I deal with struggle,
- 13:28Speaker 1: the way that I look at everything I'm in right now,
- 13:31Speaker 1: it's based upon my beliefs. My belief in who God is,
- 13:34Speaker 1: my belief in my potential, my belief that God has
- 13:36Speaker 1: a plan specifically for me, my belief that I'm an overcomer,
- 13:40Speaker 1: my belief that what I think about and what I
- 13:42Speaker 1: focus on is what's going to determine my future. Right,
- 13:46Speaker 1: all of those things that determines what my future looks like.
- 13:49Speaker 1: If you don't believe that, if you don't believe God
- 13:51Speaker 1: is a plan for you, if you don't believe you
- 13:53Speaker 1: can change things, if you don't believe you're an overcomer,
- 13:56Speaker 1: I promise you will have a life that does not
- 13:58Speaker 1: reflect any of those qualities. Right. Your life will be
- 14:01Speaker 1: what happened to you. So not so much that I'm
- 14:04Speaker 1: trying to tell you what to believe right now, but
- 14:06Speaker 1: I'm saying this is one of the predominant impacts of
- 14:10Speaker 1: what your future looks like is what you believe, and
- 14:13Speaker 1: you should be able to and if you can't. This
- 14:16Speaker 1: is where I'm telling you you're asleep at the wheel.
- 14:18Speaker 1: You should be able to look at all of the
- 14:20Speaker 1: difficult and major decisions that you're making and say why,
- 14:25Speaker 1: like from a belief standpoint, why you're making that decision,
- 14:29Speaker 1: not just from an analytical standpoint, right, Because in every
- 14:33Speaker 1: analytical assessment you make, you have and I'm not saying
- 14:36Speaker 1: throw analysis to the wind. I'm not saying just throw
- 14:40Speaker 1: out like current details in your situation, but in every
- 14:45Speaker 1: situation you are in in life, you don't know everything, right,
- 14:48Speaker 1: You don't know Like just let me give a simple example.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Like you're talking with your wife, okay, and she may
- 14:54Speaker 1: have told you that she went to the store. Okay,
- 14:57Speaker 1: Now you don't know that, but you believe her. Why
- 15:01Speaker 1: based or maybe you don't.
- 15:02Speaker 2: But where are the groceries? Yeah?
- 15:04Speaker 1: But you believe her not just based upon what you
- 15:07Speaker 1: are able to see, taste, in touch in that moment,
- 15:10Speaker 1: but also based upon what you believe about her, right, Okay,
- 15:13Speaker 1: And so take that situation and magnify that across every
- 15:18Speaker 1: single thing you do in your life. You have a
- 15:20Speaker 1: set of facts, details, things you can see, taste, touch
- 15:23Speaker 1: in that moment. However, you also make decisions based upon
- 15:27Speaker 1: what you believe about what you see, taste, in touch. Yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 1: And so your beliefs shape every single thing in your life.
- 15:33Speaker 1: And if you can't point to the beliefs, right, most
- 15:36Speaker 1: people can point to the facts. Well, I'm doing this
- 15:38Speaker 1: because of that. I'm doing this because of that. If
- 15:40Speaker 1: you can't point to the beliefs, you are asleep at
- 15:42Speaker 1: the wheel and where your life is going.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you can't say you have a belief
- 15:47Speaker 2: if there's no action with it. Because I think if
- 15:50Speaker 2: you to the point that you just made. The one
- 15:52Speaker 2: with your wife is a really simple one. But how
- 15:54Speaker 2: many times are you walking around and things happen and
- 15:57Speaker 2: you're just reacting and I said, like, why did you
- 16:00Speaker 2: do that? You would say, well, because they've made me mad,
- 16:03Speaker 2: or because you know they spilled this. Like if your
- 16:05Speaker 2: kids spill something, you lose your temper. Why'd you lose
- 16:07Speaker 2: your temper because my kids spilled that. No, that's not
- 16:10Speaker 2: why you lost your temper, Like there's a there's an
- 16:12Speaker 2: underlying belief that caused you to take an action. I
- 16:16Speaker 2: would say in this case, it's you probably haven't thought
- 16:18Speaker 2: it through. And I'm making a pretty simple one as well.
- 16:20Speaker 2: But one of the things I've realized is if you
- 16:22Speaker 2: you know, it's like whenever I talk about I worked
- 16:24Speaker 2: at the cognitive behavioral therapist, I said, how do I
- 16:26Speaker 2: change my beliefs? And I was waiting for like the
- 16:27Speaker 2: three steps so I could just knock it out. And
- 16:29Speaker 2: he's like, oh, that's simple, you just take action on
- 16:31Speaker 2: the new belief. I was like, well, that's not very
- 16:33Speaker 2: simple at all. But what he's saying, there's no belief
- 16:36Speaker 2: without action.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Yep.
- 16:37Speaker 2: So when you're raising this point about to people about
- 16:40Speaker 2: this about how it shapes everything you see, it shapes
- 16:43Speaker 2: everything you do. And so if you were to take
- 16:45Speaker 2: an analysis of your life and say here's what you
- 16:46Speaker 2: did today, what would you demind, Like, what would you
- 16:49Speaker 2: have to believe to in order to take all those actions?
- 16:53Speaker 2: It be a really interesting audit because you might say, well,
- 16:55Speaker 2: this is what I thought I believe, but my actions
- 16:57Speaker 2: are saying all different. Otherwise, that's where a lot of
- 16:59Speaker 2: us live.
- 17:00Speaker 1: And that's the point that I'm making. Yeah, it's not that, Hey,
- 17:03Speaker 1: you're not in control of your life at all. Know
- 17:05Speaker 1: what I'm saying is, if you want to have the
- 17:07Speaker 1: most control over your life, because you can't control all
- 17:10Speaker 1: of it. But if you want to have maximum control
- 17:13Speaker 1: that you can have, you have to be aware and
- 17:16Speaker 1: very intentional of what your beliefs are. And if you
- 17:19Speaker 1: are making major decisions in your life, not that you
- 17:22Speaker 1: can't point to the information or the data, but you
- 17:25Speaker 1: can't point to the beliefs that supported your decision, you're
- 17:30Speaker 1: not in control of where you're going.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Man, I hope that lights some people up. I think
- 17:34Speaker 2: it's amazing as well. Jee I was going to go
- 17:36Speaker 2: to scripture here. There's this great scripture, you've referenced it before,
- 17:39Speaker 2: and you talk about the importance of what you believe.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Man standing before literally the savior of the universe and
- 17:46Speaker 2: the creator of the universe, Jesus is there and he's
- 17:49Speaker 2: talking about how his son is being being thrown down
- 17:52Speaker 2: into the fire, and it's marked nine twenty two to
- 17:54Speaker 2: twenty four and he says to Jesus, said, but if
- 17:56Speaker 2: you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I think this answer from Jesus is unbelievable. If you
- 18:02Speaker 2: can with a question mark said Jesus. Basically, he's going like,
- 18:06Speaker 2: if you can. He doesn't know who he's in front of.
- 18:09Speaker 2: He says, everything is possible for one who believes, and
- 18:12Speaker 2: immediately the boy's father exclaimed, I do believe, help me
- 18:15Speaker 2: overcome my unbelief. And then Jesus lays his hands and
- 18:18Speaker 2: heals the man.
- 18:19Speaker 1: And I use that scripture all the time to help
- 18:22Speaker 1: people activate their faith, Like you don't have to have
- 18:25Speaker 1: a superhero level of faith. Right, it's exactly what is
- 18:29Speaker 1: in this scripture. I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief. Right,
- 18:32Speaker 1: God sees your heart if you do have an ounce
- 18:35Speaker 1: of belief and you're saying, God, help me in that right,
- 18:37Speaker 1: help me. And that's, by the way, it's why God
- 18:40Speaker 1: doesn't tell us the whole story. He says, Look, believe
- 18:43Speaker 1: for the next step and take the next step, and
- 18:45Speaker 1: then I'll give you some belief for the next step. Yeah,
- 18:47Speaker 1: you don't have to believe for the thing all the
- 18:49Speaker 1: way through because it's really beyond our capacity most of
- 18:52Speaker 1: the time.
- 18:52Speaker 2: What a great picture of grace that is, though, gee,
- 18:54Speaker 2: because you said it shapes the lens through which you
- 18:56Speaker 2: see everything else. And that's what I'm saying. He's saying,
- 18:58Speaker 2: if you can you're talking to there's nothing this guy
- 19:01Speaker 2: in front of you can't do. But because you don't
- 19:03Speaker 2: believe that, you don't know who he is, you don't
- 19:05Speaker 2: see it. Whereas the one of the people that impressed
- 19:08Speaker 2: Jesus was the man who understood authority and just and
- 19:11Speaker 2: just say the word. And he's like, I've not found
- 19:13Speaker 2: such great faith even in Israel. That's because he his
- 19:15Speaker 2: belief was this is the son of God, this is
- 19:17Speaker 2: the guy. All he has to do is give the word.
- 19:19Speaker 2: It really and so some of us might, to your point,
- 19:22Speaker 2: be like, well, no, I have to muster up that belief.
- 19:23Speaker 2: But man, there's the grace of no. If you have
- 19:25Speaker 2: an ounce of belief, God will help you overcome it.
- 19:27Speaker 2: But it's just I think it's one of those scriptures
- 19:30Speaker 2: you can read through and go like, okay, cool, that's
- 19:31Speaker 2: about faith, and it's like, no, there's so much more
- 19:33Speaker 2: to that. So anyways, I wanted to highlight that Number two.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Yes, okay, these are the things that shape your life.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Number two what you focus on or what you give
- 19:41Speaker 1: your attention to, man, Okay, yeah, And I want to
- 19:44Speaker 1: talk about this kind of in two different perspectives. The
- 19:47Speaker 1: first is, you know, I'm going to look at focus
- 19:50Speaker 1: or what you give your attention to in a micro
- 19:53Speaker 1: and in a macro. All right, just think about in
- 19:56Speaker 1: just in a conversation you're having with a person, people
- 19:59Speaker 1: can say something, but you can clue in or key
- 20:01Speaker 1: in on a specific part of what they said, and
- 20:04Speaker 1: you can just focus on that one sentence or focus
- 20:06Speaker 1: on that, and you can hyper fixate on certain intonations
- 20:10Speaker 1: and the way that they said something. And that's that's
- 20:13Speaker 1: what you're going to give all That's where you're going
- 20:16Speaker 1: to see the conversation. That's the impact you're going to
- 20:18Speaker 1: get out of the conversation. Right when I was going
- 20:21Speaker 1: through training, one of the things I learned in driving
- 20:24Speaker 1: school is look where you want to go, right, So
- 20:26Speaker 1: what you focus on, what you notice, what you give
- 20:29Speaker 1: recognition to, that's what's going to reflect your reality. Right.
- 20:33Speaker 1: And so I'm using this as just a simple example.
- 20:37Speaker 1: In a conversation, what you key in on, well, that's
- 20:40Speaker 1: how you're going to frame the entire conversation. Now, you
- 20:42Speaker 1: could focus, you could focus on other things, but bas
- 20:45Speaker 1: upon the thing that you really give your attention to
- 20:47Speaker 1: of that conversation, that's going to be your walk away
- 20:50Speaker 1: definition of what that conversation was about.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:54Speaker 1: When if you're going through like a difficult circumstance. Right,
- 20:57Speaker 1: if you're you know, losing in a football game, if
- 21:00Speaker 1: you're got a plane that's lost an engine. If you
- 21:04Speaker 1: keep focusing on the negatives, it's going to get worse.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I'm not saying you just ignore them, but you have
- 21:10Speaker 1: to focus on how do I get some wind underneath
- 21:12Speaker 1: my wings? Not just stare at the ground. Right right,
- 21:15Speaker 1: look where you want to go? This is what's going
- 21:18Speaker 1: to determine what your future is about. And I'll use
- 21:21Speaker 1: this also in a macro standpoint. Right, your life is
- 21:24Speaker 1: going to be shaped by what you give the majority
- 21:26Speaker 1: of your time and attention to. Is a majority of
- 21:28Speaker 1: your time and attention focused on I'm developing, I'm becoming.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I want to follow my purpose? What is my purpose?
- 21:35Speaker 1: God reveal these things to me. Is the majority of
- 21:37Speaker 1: your time focused on? Man, I'm just trying to get
- 21:39Speaker 1: away from these this negative stuff in my life. Is
- 21:41Speaker 1: a majority of your life focused on? Man? I just
- 21:43Speaker 1: really like to get to a place where I could
- 21:45Speaker 1: be more comfortable. We like to a place to get
- 21:46Speaker 1: to where I could have more fun. Like what is
- 21:50Speaker 1: the substance of your focus? Right? Like, what's the thing
- 21:53Speaker 1: that you really feel like you're missing out on in life. Right,
- 21:57Speaker 1: I can tell you what I'm chasing after. I'm chasing
- 21:59Speaker 1: after greatness. That's what like the miss for me is
- 22:02Speaker 1: I don't become who God's called me to be. Right,
- 22:04Speaker 1: But that's not everyone's focus. Some people's miss is like, man,
- 22:07Speaker 1: i'd really just not like to not hurt so bad. Right,
- 22:09Speaker 1: This stuff really hurts. If that's what you focus on,
- 22:12Speaker 1: that's what's going to shape your future. So really think
- 22:15Speaker 1: about it in both like the micro and a small
- 22:17Speaker 1: perspective and in the macro. The things that you notice
- 22:21Speaker 1: and give right recognition to, that's what's shaping your future.
- 22:25Speaker 1: It's what's shaping your reality. And if you're not being mindful. Again,
- 22:28Speaker 1: this is like you could call this episode like be
- 22:31Speaker 1: intentional about these things episode, be really intentional about like
- 22:35Speaker 1: why am I? Why am I caring about that? Yeah?
- 22:37Speaker 1: Because some like you've got to catch yourself sometimes given
- 22:41Speaker 1: a little too much recognition to the wrong things. Because
- 22:44Speaker 1: when you give recognition to something, look at that thing
- 22:46Speaker 1: and say, where's this going to take me? If you're
- 22:49Speaker 1: hyper fixating on the negative things that your wife says,
- 22:52Speaker 1: hyperfixating on you know, I don't like this or I
- 22:55Speaker 1: don't like that. What are you what fruit are you
- 22:57Speaker 1: expecting that to produce?
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yah? I mean that's what we did that episode. Play
- 23:01Speaker 2: the tape on that which is really roll it down.
- 23:04Speaker 2: What's so interesting about what you said? The macro and
- 23:06Speaker 2: micro are tied together because this is the reticular activation
- 23:10Speaker 2: system at work, which is whatever you tell it's important
- 23:12Speaker 2: to the example that people here all the time is
- 23:14Speaker 2: you know, you bought this new car and then you
- 23:16Speaker 2: start seeing it everywhere because for the first time you said, hey,
- 23:19Speaker 2: this is something really important this work. You know, from
- 23:22Speaker 2: a survival standpoint, this makes sense. If we're out and
- 23:24Speaker 2: we're stuck in the forest, Garrett, you know, you and
- 23:26Speaker 2: I are going to see we're going to see everything
- 23:28Speaker 2: that moves because we need to kill it for food,
- 23:30Speaker 2: right and hunter eyes means we'll price se that stuff anyways.
- 23:33Speaker 2: But like it's a lot different when you have to survive.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Yep.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Now, so that's where it makes sense. But because survival
- 23:37Speaker 2: is like taken for granted now in Western culture, we
- 23:41Speaker 2: have like a reticular activation system that can run wild.
- 23:44Speaker 2: And so the more you start to set your mind
- 23:46Speaker 2: on the right things, like you said, in the macro,
- 23:48Speaker 2: the more you'll start to be drawn to them in
- 23:49Speaker 2: the micro as well. But I think for a lot
- 23:52Speaker 2: of people, if you're if you're pain focused, you're going
- 23:55Speaker 2: to be if you're just man, I just want to
- 23:56Speaker 2: get rid of this pain, you're gonna be drawn to
- 23:58Speaker 2: all sorts of pleasures and distractions. And that's when you
- 24:00Speaker 2: can look up and go like, man, a decade of
- 24:02Speaker 2: my life went, but I have nothing to show for him.
- 24:04Speaker 2: And that is a frightening thought.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And the belief in the focus will work together. And
- 24:08Speaker 1: let me give you an example. I remember when I
- 24:10Speaker 1: was a kid playing small Pea week football and this
- 24:15Speaker 1: is like one of the funny things that happens in
- 24:16Speaker 1: pe Week football. Sometimes there's just some kid that it's like,
- 24:20Speaker 1: where's this dude's birth certificate? Yeah, I remember playing football
- 24:23Speaker 1: in seventh grade and there was this guy that looked
- 24:26Speaker 1: like a senior in high school. Like he was two
- 24:28Speaker 1: hundred and forty pounds, Like you know, we're all just tiny. Yeah. Now,
- 24:32Speaker 1: he wasn't fast, but you couldn't stop him, right, he
- 24:35Speaker 1: was massive. And I'm going to use this as an
- 24:38Speaker 1: example of and by the way, for today's episode, this
- 24:43Speaker 1: is what shapes your whole life. But you can also
- 24:44Speaker 1: zoom in on this. Here's what's going to shape my marriage, right,
- 24:47Speaker 1: here's what's going to shape my business. Here's what's going
- 24:49Speaker 1: to shape my personal growth and development. Whatever you want
- 24:51Speaker 1: to shape. Right. And so back to pee wee league football.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You could look at this guy and like, this isn't fair.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I like, this guy should not be able to play
- 25:01Speaker 1: in our league. He's way too big. And you're gonna
- 25:05Speaker 1: start then you're gonna start saying every single time like
- 25:07Speaker 1: he breaks through the line, like, see, this isn't fair.
- 25:09Speaker 1: See he shouldn't be able to be here. You're going
- 25:11Speaker 1: to reinforce what you're focusing on. I remember saying like
- 25:17Speaker 1: having like having this thought and talking to some of
- 25:19Speaker 1: the guys on the team. He's not fast, we can
- 25:21Speaker 1: go around him. He like he was unstoppable. I remember
- 25:26Speaker 1: they gave him the ball and me trying to tackle him,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and like I hit him as hard as I could
- 25:30Speaker 1: and just latched onto him and it did not face
- 25:32Speaker 1: him at all. And so I held onto him and
- 25:34Speaker 1: he's just dragging me down the field. And then a
- 25:37Speaker 1: second guy and a third guy, and finally when we
- 25:40Speaker 1: all pile on him, we're able to bring him down.
- 25:42Speaker 1: But I was like, look, he's not fast. We can
- 25:44Speaker 1: get on him, right, We're gonna have to just play
- 25:46Speaker 1: the game differently. We're not gonna be able to he
- 25:48Speaker 1: like he's going to break through the line every time,
- 25:51Speaker 1: So we're just kept to blow out to the side, right,
- 25:53Speaker 1: or we're gonna have to run around him right wherever
- 25:55Speaker 1: he's at, We're going somewhere else. And when he gets
- 25:57Speaker 1: the ball, we can just all get on him because
- 25:58Speaker 1: he's not fast, right. And so instead of focusing on like, wow,
- 26:02Speaker 1: this isn't fair. He's gonna blow us over every single time. Well,
- 26:05Speaker 1: here's how we can beat.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Him, right. Yeah, I find that that's so interesting to
- 26:08Speaker 2: hear your strategic mind, Gary, that's seventh grade.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Keep going, man, what's what you focus on, right, what
- 26:15Speaker 1: you notice and what you give recognition to, it's gonna
- 26:18Speaker 1: shape your reality. And this is Matthew Chapter six, Verse
- 26:21Speaker 1: twenty two and twenty three. The eye is the lamp
- 26:24Speaker 1: of the body. So if your eye is healthy, your
- 26:27Speaker 1: whole body will be full of light. But if your
- 26:29Speaker 1: eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.
- 26:33Speaker 1: If then the light in you is darkness? How great
- 26:37Speaker 1: is the darkness? Right? What this scripture is talking about
- 26:41Speaker 1: is is and it says eye here, not eyes, yeah,
- 26:44Speaker 1: because this is really about your spirit. But what you
- 26:46Speaker 1: spiritually see, what you spiritually focus on is this scripture
- 26:50Speaker 1: is telling you the principles of the same thing they
- 26:53Speaker 1: taught me in driving school. Look where you want to go, right,
- 26:56Speaker 1: what you focus on, what you give attention to, what
- 26:59Speaker 1: your can assuming, what you're letting into your life. It's
- 27:02Speaker 1: going to determine who you are. Yeah.
- 27:04Speaker 2: I think it's so interesting that the word there uses
- 27:06Speaker 2: if your eye is healthy, because this is the ESVs.
- 27:08Speaker 2: So this is like a like for light translation because
- 27:11Speaker 2: when it says if your eye is bad or like,
- 27:12Speaker 2: oh my eyes just drawn to all the bad things,
- 27:14Speaker 2: we wouldn't think.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Of that eye as unhealthy. I'll use my other.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Eye, right, Yeah, that's what we would think of It's like, oh,
- 27:19Speaker 2: it's just not working. If this is literally saying like
- 27:21Speaker 2: a healthy eye sees the good, right and like and
- 27:24Speaker 2: looks towards the right sea.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Spirit look at ie in the singular not the plural
- 27:28Speaker 1: eye is your ability to see?
- 27:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's so good man, so good?
- 27:32Speaker 1: All right? Number three. Okay, again, these are all the things.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I'm not telling you anything you haven't heard. I'm reminding
- 27:40Speaker 1: you because some of you guys are gonna be great
- 27:41Speaker 1: at a few of these, but then there's going to
- 27:43Speaker 1: be one they're like, yeah, I gotta be more intentional there.
- 27:45Speaker 1: And that's the whole point of this episode, right that
- 27:47Speaker 1: one of these would remind you, like man, I got
- 27:49Speaker 1: to take the wheel in that area. Okay, Number three,
- 27:52Speaker 1: what you repeatedly do you want to determine what your
- 27:56Speaker 1: future looks like. It's what you repeatedly do. Your routine,
- 28:00Speaker 1: your habits, your disciplines. It doesn't matter that you go
- 28:03Speaker 1: to the gym one time, doesn't matter that you get
- 28:05Speaker 1: a trainer, you bought a fitness plan, doesn't matter that
- 28:08Speaker 1: you read a book, doesn't matter that you start a business.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Your future is going to be based upon what you
- 28:15Speaker 1: repeatedly do. Okay. If there's a reason that Jesse Eatsler
- 28:19Speaker 1: hired a navy seal to come live with him, he
- 28:22Speaker 1: didn't want to read the navy seal's book. He said,
- 28:24Speaker 1: come live with me, help me live like you. And
- 28:26Speaker 1: because he knew if I do this for thirty days,
- 28:29Speaker 1: that'll start to really impact some change. You can read
- 28:32Speaker 1: all about it. You can go do like Jocko does
- 28:35Speaker 1: these and they're great. He does those. I forget what
- 28:37Speaker 1: they're called. It'll come back to me in a minute.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But he does these big workout beat ups, right, and
- 28:42Speaker 1: so everyone will come do a workout with Jocko, these
- 28:45Speaker 1: grind grinder pets, and it's great. You can go do
- 28:47Speaker 1: one workout with the Navy seal. But unless you carry
- 28:51Speaker 1: that discipline forward and you keep doing all those same things,
- 28:54Speaker 1: you're not going to get the results that he has. Right,
- 28:56Speaker 1: you got an experience, but an experience is not what
- 28:59Speaker 1: drives a results. Experience is meant to be your result
- 29:02Speaker 1: makes you feel a certain way. But if you want
- 29:04Speaker 1: your future to change, it's going to be determined by
- 29:07Speaker 1: what you repeatedly do. What you repeatedly do is who
- 29:10Speaker 1: you're going to become in life. If you're someone who's
- 29:13Speaker 1: the men I just like to read, right, that'll shape
- 29:15Speaker 1: your life. And I just I always work out. I
- 29:17Speaker 1: can't help but go a day and I like, I've
- 29:19Speaker 1: got to work out at some point during the day.
- 29:21Speaker 1: The things that you focus on, the things that you
- 29:23Speaker 1: give all of your time and attention to and I
- 29:25Speaker 1: do this every day. I do it all the time.
- 29:27Speaker 1: I always read scripture. I can tell you for me,
- 29:29Speaker 1: one of the things that has really shaped me is
- 29:32Speaker 1: like it's way beyond habit and routine. At this point
- 29:34Speaker 1: in my life, I just read proverbs. I've been doing
- 29:36Speaker 1: it since I was young. Just keep reading the proverbs.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And it was something for me early on that I
- 29:43Speaker 1: was like, you know, I know I need to read
- 29:44Speaker 1: my Bible every day, but I don't really like read
- 29:47Speaker 1: and study chapters of the Bible every day. I've and
- 29:50Speaker 1: for me even today, right and like in my current life,
- 29:54Speaker 1: I have I'll do a couple sessions a week where
- 29:57Speaker 1: I read for an hour or read for two hours,
- 29:59Speaker 1: more so than just read for an intentional thirty or
- 30:02Speaker 1: forty five minutes a day. A lot of times I
- 30:04Speaker 1: read my proverb during the day, and then I'll listen
- 30:06Speaker 1: to a couple of chapters of the Bible while I'm
- 30:09Speaker 1: while I'm driving or while I'm working out, and I'm
- 30:12Speaker 1: going to get some of that in me. But where
- 30:13Speaker 1: I like really sit down and study, I do that
- 30:15Speaker 1: a couple times a week. But the point that I'm
- 30:16Speaker 1: making is I've had an intentional routine in my life
- 30:20Speaker 1: of reading proverbs every day for decades at this point
- 30:24Speaker 1: in my life, and it's greatly impacted my wisdom. It's
- 30:27Speaker 1: determined who I am just a couple just that one
- 30:30Speaker 1: thing that I said, this is who I'll always be,
- 30:31Speaker 1: right right, So you want to you want to shape
- 30:33Speaker 1: who you are in the future. What are the things
- 30:35Speaker 1: that you repeatedly do and not just for a few weeks,
- 30:37Speaker 1: not for a few months. But it's like, man, this
- 30:40Speaker 1: is just who I am. Yeah, and I really really
- 30:43Speaker 1: capture what you said there. You said who so many
- 30:46Speaker 1: times And I think I think the way that we
- 30:49Speaker 1: are by default thinking as consumers is what am I
- 30:52Speaker 1: going to get rather than who I'm going to become?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Because that's where you see people pursue an outcome and
- 30:58Speaker 1: get transformed into something that maybe they didn't intend to
- 31:00Speaker 1: and they don't like once they get there, right, Like,
- 31:02Speaker 1: I mean, these are people that they want to make
- 31:04Speaker 1: money so bad, and so you get to the point
- 31:06Speaker 1: that you made whatever big sum you think it is,
- 31:08Speaker 1: but then you look around and you're like, dude, you
- 31:09Speaker 1: treat people terrible. You're a user, you can't make a
- 31:12Speaker 1: relationship work, and they're like, well, I never wanted it
- 31:14Speaker 1: to be this way. It's like, because you were thinking
- 31:17Speaker 1: about what not who, changing the thought process to who
- 31:20Speaker 1: do I want to be will really radically change the
- 31:23Speaker 1: inputs because now you're going, okay, this is shaping something
- 31:26Speaker 1: that's like this is who I'm going, who I am?
- 31:28Speaker 2: It's massive, that's right.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Think Well, I think some people pursue wisdom is like, well,
- 31:32Speaker 1: if I could just get some wisdom, I could trade
- 31:34Speaker 1: that wisdom for what I really want exactly right, as
- 31:36Speaker 1: if you could transact it like it's a form of currency, right,
- 31:39Speaker 1: And it's really the pursuit of just being a wise person. Yeah,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I mean, and like that has to be the life
- 31:44Speaker 1: that you want. And I'll tell you, like, being wise
- 31:46Speaker 1: is way better than being wealthy. Well, wealth is great,
- 31:49Speaker 1: and wisdom will lead you to wealth, but to be
- 31:52Speaker 1: an unwise person you just fall into all sort of
- 31:55Speaker 1: traps like being being And this is what a proverb says,
- 31:59Speaker 1: by the way, pursue wisdom overwhealth. Wisdom will guide you
- 32:04Speaker 1: in every single area of your life. Right, But that's
- 32:06Speaker 1: what you've got to desire. It's like, I want to
- 32:08Speaker 1: be a wise person, So what do wise.
- 32:10Speaker 2: People do, yeah, because I think the difference there is
- 32:13Speaker 2: is between wisdom and wealth. Like what we're talking about
- 32:16Speaker 2: here is if I said, hey, what if you could
- 32:17Speaker 2: be the kind of person that you always knew how
- 32:19Speaker 2: to make wealth, but you never knew how to enjoy it.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I think I think a lot of people would step
- 32:23Speaker 2: back and go, man, I don't know if I want that.
- 32:25Speaker 2: And when it talks about the fruit of wisdom and
- 32:27Speaker 2: that it pays, it's more than it's worth more than
- 32:30Speaker 2: all the silver and gold, it's better than Ruby's what
- 32:32Speaker 2: that's saying is, it's like, look, if you actually want
- 32:34Speaker 2: to know how to be content in any and all
- 32:36Speaker 2: circumstances and to truly be the type of person who's
- 32:38Speaker 2: living life skillfully, sure, money and all that stuff will fall,
- 32:42Speaker 2: like we've said so many times, but man, it's that
- 32:45Speaker 2: wisdom that you can be that person in any situation
- 32:48Speaker 2: that you're like, hey, I know what we should do.
- 32:49Speaker 2: I know how to live with peace. That's worth more
- 32:51Speaker 2: than anything.
- 32:51Speaker 1: So this is an obvious one, but I'm just reminding them.
- 32:54Speaker 1: So right, look at your life. Look at your life
- 32:57Speaker 1: right now, and answer this question, what are the things
- 33:01Speaker 1: that in twenty years I'll be able to look back
- 33:05Speaker 1: at today and say I am who I am twenty
- 33:07Speaker 1: years from now because I did these few repeatable things
- 33:11Speaker 1: I can I can point, I can point to, I
- 33:14Speaker 1: can point to having a daily proverb practice how it
- 33:18Speaker 1: has made me who I am today? Right, So just
- 33:20Speaker 1: ask yourself that question, twenty years from now? What am
- 33:23Speaker 1: I going to look back and say? I am who
- 33:24Speaker 1: I am because of these few little things that I did.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Great question, and you could ask that question for any
- 33:30Speaker 2: area of your life. I mean, we're big on the
- 33:32Speaker 2: date your wife every single.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I was just about to say that it's not that hard,
- 33:36Speaker 1: just do it, right. I can look at our men's group.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I can look at mighty men, and I said, you
- 33:41Speaker 1: know what, we're going to be here every Saturday, and
- 33:44Speaker 1: a couple of you nuggets I'm going to hold on to.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let y'all leave right Like, we're just
- 33:48Speaker 1: gonna have some really strong relationships and we're going to
- 33:51Speaker 1: be here every week.
- 33:52Speaker 2: I do this in every area of my life, man,
- 33:54Speaker 2: And it's when people go like, how are you doing
- 33:57Speaker 2: all this? I'm like, it's really not that hard. I've
- 33:59Speaker 2: just heat in on the things that I know I
- 34:01Speaker 2: need to do over and over again that are going
- 34:03Speaker 2: to produce the life that I want.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Hey, let me give you an example and then we'll
- 34:06Speaker 1: go on to the next one. You say you want
- 34:08Speaker 1: to get in shape, All right, say you want to
- 34:10Speaker 1: get in shape. Make here's here's where you like your
- 34:14Speaker 1: whole life will be different. Five years from now, ten
- 34:16Speaker 1: years from now, that you could look back and say, well,
- 34:19Speaker 1: Monday to Saturday, every every day at five am, I
- 34:23Speaker 1: was at the gym right like nothing else. I didn't
- 34:27Speaker 1: get education, I didn't you know, read all these books,
- 34:30Speaker 1: by all these supplements. Just that years from now you
- 34:34Speaker 1: can say, well, just for the last few years, I've
- 34:36Speaker 1: just lived a life where, you know, Monday to Saturday
- 34:39Speaker 1: at five am, I'm at the gym every single day. Yeah,
- 34:41Speaker 1: you'll figure it out from there, I promise.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Because when you start feeling terrible at five am,
- 34:45Speaker 2: you go, man, what am I eating?
- 34:46Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 34:46Speaker 2: And then when you start looking at you're eating, like, man,
- 34:48Speaker 2: what can I eat that's better? And then next thing
- 34:49Speaker 2: you know, you're exactly right, it's but it's but I
- 34:52Speaker 2: wanted the thirty Days to six Pack program. Man.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Well, I thought I thought if i'd maybe if I
- 34:57Speaker 1: just learned this next thing, then everything would is become
- 35:00Speaker 1: easy for me.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Yeah, because once I get the six pack, man just
- 35:02Speaker 2: takes care of itself.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Well, your life follows your routines. Okay, let's keep going.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Number four. These are the things shaping your life, right,
- 35:09Speaker 1: And like I said, none of these are probably going
- 35:11Speaker 1: to be revelational for you guys, but it's a reminder.
- 35:13Speaker 1: You're going to have a couple of these that you're
- 35:15Speaker 1: going to say, Man, I got to drive harder in
- 35:17Speaker 1: that area. I got to put my hands back on
- 35:18Speaker 1: the wheel. Yep. Number four your relationships, Right, Who are
- 35:23Speaker 1: your relationships? Because your relationships are going to have the
- 35:25Speaker 1: biggest impact on who you are. Yes, relationships are the
- 35:29Speaker 1: model in your life for what's normal. They're the model
- 35:33Speaker 1: in your life for what's admirable. They are one of
- 35:36Speaker 1: the biggest influencing factors in your life. They're one of
- 35:39Speaker 1: the things that influences and reflects what your standards are. Yes, Okay,
- 35:45Speaker 1: if you want to be someone who doesn't curse anymore,
- 35:48Speaker 1: hang around a bunch of people who don't. Right, And
- 35:50Speaker 1: I'll use this one as an example. I have to
- 35:53Speaker 1: be very intentional, right, Like I've lived in a season
- 35:56Speaker 1: for the last year and a half where different than before,
- 35:59Speaker 1: and it was like when I was in the Navy, right,
- 36:01Speaker 1: Like I just I have no desire to use that language,
- 36:04Speaker 1: but I spend time right now around a lot of
- 36:06Speaker 1: people who do use foul language, and like I've found
- 36:10Speaker 1: myself like almost wanting to use that word or words
- 36:13Speaker 1: plural and having to say, no, that's not how I am.
- 36:17Speaker 1: I don't use those words. And that's that's just and
- 36:19Speaker 1: it's it's an example of how who you're with is
- 36:23Speaker 1: going to show you who you are. Now. It doesn't.
- 36:26Speaker 1: It's not, you know, one hundred percent strict, but I'm
- 36:29Speaker 1: having to be intentional about this one little decision and say, like, Okay,
- 36:32Speaker 1: I'm not going to let the people that I'm with
- 36:34Speaker 1: influence that in me, right, because I'm very strong about
- 36:37Speaker 1: a bunch of these other areas in my life, and
- 36:39Speaker 1: that is one of my routines and habits. I don't
- 36:41Speaker 1: use foul language. You won't ever even hear me be negative, right, Right,
- 36:45Speaker 1: I'm just going to choose to be a certain way.
- 36:46Speaker 1: But I'm using that as an example of the people
- 36:48Speaker 1: around you influence you. Right, So you need to be
- 36:52Speaker 1: intentional about who do you spend time with? Where do
- 36:55Speaker 1: you want your life to be? In ten years and
- 36:58Speaker 1: twenty years, you can look back at where you're life
- 37:00Speaker 1: is and it'll be because of your who's did you
- 37:03Speaker 1: spend time with? Yep? Yeah.
- 37:05Speaker 2: And by the way, that wasn't a shot at me
- 37:07Speaker 2: when you were talking about people you found much. I
- 37:09Speaker 2: just want to make sure that's way as a joke.
- 37:11Speaker 2: But so depending on where you're at in your life,
- 37:13Speaker 2: this is gonna look differently. But the emphasis on this
- 37:17Speaker 2: cannot be overstated. If you're in your early twenties, what
- 37:20Speaker 2: I tell people all the time, as I say, the
- 37:21Speaker 2: number one decision that you're gonna make right now is
- 37:23Speaker 2: who you're around right And the reason I say it's
- 37:26Speaker 2: the number one is because of everything that you just said.
- 37:28Speaker 2: If I'm in my twenties, I'm looking for ways to
- 37:31Speaker 2: be around people that I admire, knowing that you don't
- 37:34Speaker 2: really bring something to them at the same level that
- 37:37Speaker 2: they're at, which means what you're gonna have to serve.
- 37:39Speaker 2: If I was in my twenties and I wanted to
- 37:40Speaker 2: be around someone, I'm like, what can I do for you?
- 37:43Speaker 2: How can I serve you for free just to be around.
- 37:46Speaker 2: You're gonna have to pay a price. As you get
- 37:48Speaker 2: older and you start having more about you, this becomes
- 37:51Speaker 2: like are your friends all the people that just happen
- 37:53Speaker 2: to live close to you or are you really looking
- 37:55Speaker 2: around and going, you know what, I need to be
- 37:57Speaker 2: intentional about whom around And guess what this means. You're
- 37:59Speaker 2: going to have to reach out to those people. You
- 38:01Speaker 2: may be the person who initiates all the time, and
- 38:03Speaker 2: you have to be okay with that because if you
- 38:05Speaker 2: realize the significance of this, it's not about like, oh
- 38:08Speaker 2: well they don't reach out to us or or I
- 38:10Speaker 2: want it. It's like, okay, who do we need to
- 38:12Speaker 2: be around and why? And I think a lot of
- 38:14Speaker 2: people will fill up their calendars with coffees and different
- 38:17Speaker 2: things and there's no thought process. It's just whoever came
- 38:19Speaker 2: along and sent me a text message against my time?
- 38:21Speaker 2: And you really need to think about that because it
- 38:24Speaker 2: gets I think as you get older, it gets harder
- 38:26Speaker 2: because your kids start playing sports, they go to school
- 38:28Speaker 2: with people, and there's a lot of factors that pull
- 38:30Speaker 2: on you. And if you're not the one going like, hey,
- 38:32Speaker 2: this is who we are, This is who we hang
- 38:33Speaker 2: around with. This is why you're gonna end up with
- 38:36Speaker 2: a bunch of people that are, like, you know, maybe
- 38:38Speaker 2: nice but not really, not really understanding what you've signed
- 38:42Speaker 2: up to.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Look at the people who you're in relationship with today
- 38:46Speaker 1: and ask yourself, by the sum of who they are,
- 38:49Speaker 1: is that who I want to be? Yeah? And then
- 38:51Speaker 1: you've got to also reflect and say, am I willing
- 38:54Speaker 1: to make some changes if that's not what you want?
- 38:57Speaker 1: If the people that you're with is not what you want,
- 39:00Speaker 1: then you might have to be willing to make some changes.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Proverbs chapter twenty two, verse twenty four and twenty five.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor
- 39:10Speaker 1: go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways
- 39:14Speaker 1: and entangle yourself in a snare. Yeah, but the Bible
- 39:17Speaker 1: says to love your neighbor. What if my neighbor? What
- 39:19Speaker 1: if the guy who lives next door to me aren't
- 39:22Speaker 1: I supposed to be you know, like a good reflection
- 39:24Speaker 1: of Christ? Absolutely? Yeah, but don't make him your best friend? Right.
- 39:28Speaker 2: I think it's so amazing that thousands of years ago, Solomon,
- 39:31Speaker 2: in his wisdom, was able to see this, Like you become.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Because like it's a very clear statement. Make no friendship.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, there's no interpretation there.
- 39:39Speaker 1: It's unless you learn his ways and entangle yourself in
- 39:43Speaker 1: a snare.
- 39:44Speaker 2: And so what a great thing that it goes both ways, right,
- 39:46Speaker 2: you can get the negative or the positive, So choose wisely.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Let's keep going here. Number five, Right, these are the
- 39:51Speaker 1: things that are shaping your life. Okay, this is a
- 39:55Speaker 1: big one. This is a big one. And it's what
- 39:57Speaker 1: you tolerate. Okay, there's some stuff in your life that
- 40:02Speaker 1: it's little stuff. You're like, I don't really like that,
- 40:04Speaker 1: but it's okay, that's not that big of a deal, right,
- 40:06Speaker 1: What you tolerate will change your life for the better
- 40:10Speaker 1: or for the worse. Nobody wakes up in the morning
- 40:13Speaker 1: and says, you know what I'm really thinking, I want
- 40:16Speaker 1: a bad marriage. Nobody wakes up in the morning and says,
- 40:19Speaker 1: I'd like to live in just total financial distress for
- 40:22Speaker 1: the rest of my life. Nobody wakes up and says,
- 40:25Speaker 1: you know, I've decided that the goal for my life
- 40:27Speaker 1: is mediocrity. Nobody wakes up and chooses those things. But
- 40:31Speaker 1: you tolerate your way into one of those lives. You
- 40:34Speaker 1: tolerate your life. You tolerate your way into mediocrity, you
- 40:37Speaker 1: tolerate your way into financial distress, you tolerate your way
- 40:42Speaker 1: into a terrible marriage. Right, it's just these little things
- 40:45Speaker 1: over and over that you allowed. Right. You tolerate your
- 40:49Speaker 1: way into being overweight, You tolerate your way into being
- 40:52Speaker 1: over debt. One decision at a time, you say, yeah,
- 40:55Speaker 1: I know I shouldn't, but this is okay. You need
- 40:57Speaker 1: to get a little bit more aggressive about the things
- 41:01Speaker 1: that like, this is one of the things that you
- 41:03Speaker 1: guys laugh at me about, But it's why I am
- 41:05Speaker 1: the way that I am. Like you step an inch
- 41:07Speaker 1: on me and I said, no, I didn't want you
- 41:08Speaker 1: to take that step.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Right, No, back up, right.
- 41:11Speaker 1: I'm very intentional about the way that my life is about. Thoughts,
- 41:16Speaker 1: most especially is what I'm most aggressive with because I
- 41:19Speaker 1: know that's what's going to termine my future. But anything
- 41:22Speaker 1: in my life that if it starts to go in
- 41:24Speaker 1: a direction I don't want it to go. I don't
- 41:26Speaker 1: let it take more than a step before I push
- 41:27Speaker 1: it back. But the problem is people let it's like, yeah,
- 41:31Speaker 1: it took a step, and I'd like it to not
- 41:33Speaker 1: be there. But it's all right. I don't want to
- 41:34Speaker 1: say anything your sense of like, man, I want to
- 41:37Speaker 1: be rude, I'd be mean, or that would be like
- 41:39Speaker 1: or people would think I'm crazy. Who cares about any
- 41:43Speaker 1: of that stuff. You've got to decide this is what's right,
- 41:46Speaker 1: this is what's best, and take the steps according to that.
- 41:49Speaker 1: Every time you tolerate these little things, it's robbing your potential.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, I do laugh at you, as you know,
- 41:57Speaker 2: but I haven't been around you as much as I have.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I feel like I've understood a lot more because it
- 42:02Speaker 2: can be like, oh, that's crazy Navy seal guy, and
- 42:04Speaker 2: that's why he reacts the way he does. What it
- 42:07Speaker 2: really is. Gee, when you say you've got to decide
- 42:09Speaker 2: what's right, you've decided on a lot of ways, but
- 42:12Speaker 2: it's based on truth. And this is where people will
- 42:15Speaker 2: struggle with this one. If you don't know the difference
- 42:17Speaker 2: between principal truths and your own preferences, you'll fight the
- 42:21Speaker 2: wrong battles here and you'll tolerate the wrong things. Because
- 42:25Speaker 2: let me give you an example. There may be something
- 42:27Speaker 2: where like my wife wants to go do something that
- 42:29Speaker 2: I don't particularly want to do, right, whatever instant like
- 42:32Speaker 2: this is a hypothetical situation. To me, I love my
- 42:36Speaker 2: wife and I have a saying in my marriage. If
- 42:37Speaker 2: it's important to you, it's important to me, I'll go
- 42:38Speaker 2: along and do that thing, and I'll have a great
- 42:40Speaker 2: attitude about it, and we'll do that. And maybe I didn't.
- 42:42Speaker 2: You know, it's not naturally what I would have enjoyed.
- 42:44Speaker 2: But I'm not going to fight over that because that's
- 42:45Speaker 2: just a preference matter. Now, if my wife and I
- 42:48Speaker 2: have an argument about something and there's some like bitterness
- 42:52Speaker 2: between us, we're not going to bed until we solve that.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Why because because the Bible says don't let the sun
- 42:57Speaker 2: go down, you know, go and it talks about what
- 43:00Speaker 2: unforgiveness will do to you. It says if you if
- 43:02Speaker 2: you have unforgiveness between you and your wife, God won't
- 43:04Speaker 2: hear your prayers. Now that So this is what I'm saying.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Where there's truth, Okay, this is a big deal. This
- 43:10Speaker 2: is one that we're going to stay up till whatever
- 43:11Speaker 2: time it takes to solve because this is actually based
- 43:14Speaker 2: on principle. So when the more you know the truth,
- 43:17Speaker 2: the more you're gonna realize the little things that you
- 43:19Speaker 2: tolerate where they'll absolutely kill you. Paul talks about this.
- 43:22Speaker 2: This is Galatians five to nine. He says, a little
- 43:25Speaker 2: yeast works through the whole batch of dough. And what
- 43:27Speaker 2: he's referring to is he's talking about to the Galatians.
- 43:29Speaker 2: He's like, who bewitched you? Having started off in grace,
- 43:32Speaker 2: are you going to now finish with the law, Because
- 43:34Speaker 2: what they were doing is they were starting to say, hey,
- 43:35Speaker 2: you need to be circumcised. Now, the thought process could
- 43:38Speaker 2: be like it doesn't you know, we're not saying that
- 43:40Speaker 2: Jesus didn't come, Like let's just have like there's nothing
- 43:43Speaker 2: wrong with being the circumcised. We've done it for thousands
- 43:45Speaker 2: of years.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Sounds very harm harmless. But when you understand, no, no,
- 43:49Speaker 2: there is a grace now that's no longer by works.
- 43:51Speaker 2: And if we start to say, well this work is
- 43:53Speaker 2: still good but the other ones aren't, we're going down
- 43:55Speaker 2: the complete wrong path. Because truth is grace, like God's
- 43:58Speaker 2: grace is the new Covenant, that's the truth. We can't
- 44:01Speaker 2: go back to this old way. So he's fighting for
- 44:03Speaker 2: something that I imagine a lot of them are like,
- 44:04Speaker 2: what's the big deal We've been doing this for thousands
- 44:06Speaker 2: of years. You know, we're not saying that Jesus isn't Lord,
- 44:09Speaker 2: And that's the deception that comes in. So the more
- 44:12Speaker 2: you know the truth, man, the more you will know
- 44:13Speaker 2: what to fight for.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Next one. Right, all these things they're shaping your life. Okay,
- 44:20Speaker 1: number six, what you commit to? All right, So think
- 44:24Speaker 1: about this. This is like you like your primary, your
- 44:28Speaker 1: major commitments, the things like marriage or for me, it
- 44:32Speaker 1: was choosing to join the military first season. That was
- 44:34Speaker 1: a contract. I couldn't get out of it. Right. You
- 44:37Speaker 1: making a contract in your marriage, You making a commitment
- 44:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna follow God. You making a commitment in fitness,
- 44:43Speaker 1: making a commitment with certain other relationships that are more
- 44:48Speaker 1: of a covenant basis. The contracts that you write in
- 44:51Speaker 1: your life, they're gonna determine what your future looks like.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Think about for a business. Like for a business, you
- 44:56Speaker 1: can look at its contracts and you can determine what
- 44:58Speaker 1: its future is going to look like. For a man's life,
- 45:02Speaker 1: you can look at his contracts and you can see
- 45:04Speaker 1: what his future is going to look like. That's also
- 45:06Speaker 1: based upon what you do with those contracts. Do you
- 45:09Speaker 1: honor them, or do you walk away from them. You
- 45:11Speaker 1: can have good contracts and not honor them, and you're
- 45:13Speaker 1: going to have a negative future. You can have bad contracts,
- 45:16Speaker 1: you can honor those, and that's going to determine what
- 45:19Speaker 1: your future looks like. There may be some positives that
- 45:22Speaker 1: go with honoring that contract, and there may be some
- 45:24Speaker 1: negatives that go with honoring that contract, but it says
- 45:26Speaker 1: a lot more about you than it says about the
- 45:28Speaker 1: other thing. Your life is going to be a reflection
- 45:31Speaker 1: of the things that you've commit to.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's so good man. I think people, I
- 45:36Speaker 2: think this is one of the areas where we are
- 45:39Speaker 2: very bad at counting the cost, and so something sounds
- 45:43Speaker 2: good in the moment, we get excited about it. This
- 45:44Speaker 2: where equanimity will really help you, and so you're just like, yeah,
- 45:46Speaker 2: I want to do that, and then like a couple
- 45:48Speaker 2: weeks later, after that's worn off, like you know that
- 45:50Speaker 2: new car feeling it's so good, and then like three
- 45:53Speaker 2: months later, when it's just your car, you're like, dang man,
- 45:56Speaker 2: this payment hurts.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Bro.
- 45:57Speaker 2: I really could do without having whatever amount of car.
- 46:00Speaker 2: And that's us for a lot of one of the.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Worst contracts that I think people make I think I've
- 46:07Speaker 1: seen this many times. People go through circumstances that hurt them, right,
- 46:11Speaker 1: and they write.
- 46:12Speaker 2: A contract in pain.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And the contracts that you write in pain
- 46:16Speaker 1: are terrible. You must like when you're in pain, when
- 46:20Speaker 1: you're vulnerable, you're gonna write bad contracts. And you've got
- 46:24Speaker 1: to be very mindful to write a contract that's right,
- 46:27Speaker 1: not out of pain and out of vulnerability. Here's what
- 46:30Speaker 1: I mean, right. You see this in you see this
- 46:33Speaker 1: in women where women get scorned by a man, and
- 46:36Speaker 1: they say, and men do this too, right, I'm just
- 46:39Speaker 1: using an example that we've seen in culture. Women get
- 46:42Speaker 1: scorned by a man. I'll never let a man treat
- 46:44Speaker 1: me that way again. Right now, there's obviously a problem
- 46:47Speaker 1: with that man, but it's not a problem with men. Right.
- 46:50Speaker 1: And but what you've done is you have sworn off like,
- 46:53Speaker 1: I'll never be in a relationship with a man again.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I'll never trust a man again. You've hurt yourself, right.
- 46:59Speaker 1: And what happens is we make these type of emotional contracts.
- 47:02Speaker 1: We committed to be a certain way, and that's the
- 47:04Speaker 1: worst contract you could have written. Yeah, you need to
- 47:06Speaker 1: rip that contract hup immediately. But your life is a
- 47:09Speaker 1: reflection of those things, those little commitments that you've make.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a friend who I will not name,
- 47:14Speaker 2: and I don't think it is not associate with the
- 47:16Speaker 2: podcast or anybody trying to figure it out. He's been
- 47:18Speaker 2: married three times now and thankfully it's the third is
- 47:21Speaker 2: going fantastic. I think it's the right woman he's been
- 47:23Speaker 2: they've been married for a little while now. He got
- 47:25Speaker 2: married early in his twenties, right, and this woman they
- 47:28Speaker 2: moved to Vegas, and she started hanging out with the
- 47:31Speaker 2: wrong people and just completely turned direction and just decided
- 47:35Speaker 2: that she didn't want to be a mom and a
- 47:36Speaker 2: wife anymore. They had a kid and everything, and so
- 47:39Speaker 2: he was basically left on his own to raise this
- 47:41Speaker 2: son while his wife was out hooking up with other people.
- 47:44Speaker 2: And of course they eventually got divorced. So for his
- 47:46Speaker 2: second marriage, what do you think he was looking for? Man,
- 47:48Speaker 2: I had this woman that I thought was going to
- 47:50Speaker 2: raise my kids. She was opposite, Right, I just want
- 47:52Speaker 2: someone maternal. So he married someone who was very maternal,
- 47:55Speaker 2: but also had a lot of deep, deep character flaws, manipulation, substance,
- 48:00Speaker 2: its abuse. So he but hey, she was maternal and
- 48:03Speaker 2: and we told him, we're like, we don't think this
- 48:05Speaker 2: is a good idea. And then you know, fast forward
- 48:07Speaker 2: and then they're getting a divorce. And that's exactly what
- 48:10Speaker 2: you said, because he was so hyper fixated on what
- 48:13Speaker 2: he had been wounded, and understandably so. But it's like, man,
- 48:16Speaker 2: it doesn't change the consequence of what happens, because you wrote,
- 48:19Speaker 2: as you said, a contract and pain, And my heart
- 48:21Speaker 2: goes out to him and to anybody else who's in
- 48:23Speaker 2: that situation but may not be conscious, be conscious of
- 48:26Speaker 2: what you're fixating on. It goes back to what you
- 48:27Speaker 2: said in point in point two, what are you focused on?
- 48:31Speaker 1: Yep? Right, man, these are the things shaping your life.
- 48:34Speaker 1: And here's the last one. Yep, right, this is a
- 48:36Speaker 1: big one. I would say nearly all of these points
- 48:41Speaker 1: influenced the other points.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they're all tied together.
- 48:43Speaker 1: You want to get all of these right? Yeah, and right,
- 48:47Speaker 1: here's what right is. Right is that you're mindful of it.
- 48:49Speaker 1: It's not that you get every decision right, but right
- 48:51Speaker 1: is that you're mindful of it, that you look at
- 48:53Speaker 1: decisions in this area and you understand, Okay, this isn't
- 48:58Speaker 1: just you know what, you tolerate being trash in your car, right,
- 49:02Speaker 1: that's determining my future. It's not just that my car
- 49:05Speaker 1: has trash or doesn't has trash. That's determining my future.
- 49:09Speaker 1: And so that's what winning, that's what getting it right
- 49:11Speaker 1: in every single one of these areas, that when you
- 49:13Speaker 1: make decisions in these areas, you understand the thing is
- 49:17Speaker 1: not about the thing. This is going to determine what
- 49:19Speaker 1: my future looks like.
- 49:20Speaker 2: It's investment thinking is what it is, right, And you
- 49:22Speaker 2: really have to think like an investor in your life.
- 49:24Speaker 2: I think we think like consumers, not like investors. And
- 49:27Speaker 2: when you switch that, when you hit that switch, you
- 49:29Speaker 2: make very different decisions.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Good Nick, all right, last one here, this is one
- 49:33Speaker 1: of the biggest ones. And I think this is more obvious, right,
- 49:36Speaker 1: What shapes your life? What shapes your future? Number seven?
- 49:39Speaker 1: How you respond to adversity, How you respond to adversity,
- 49:43Speaker 1: because your relationship with pain, how you respond to adversity
- 49:47Speaker 1: is going to determine what adversity produces in you. When
- 49:51Speaker 1: you go through pain, when you go through difficult circumstances,
- 49:54Speaker 1: you can decide to run from that thing, or you
- 49:56Speaker 1: can decide to lean into that thing. It's going to
- 49:58Speaker 1: be based upon your belief. It's going to be based
- 50:00Speaker 1: upon the things that you focus on. It's going to
- 50:03Speaker 1: be based upon what you repeatedly do. All these things
- 50:05Speaker 1: are going to influence your relationship with adversity. But you've
- 50:10Speaker 1: got to have a right relationship with adversity because let
- 50:14Speaker 1: me just give you an example. Let's frame an entire life.
- 50:17Speaker 1: If your relationship with adversity is when I go through adversity,
- 50:21Speaker 1: I try to avoid it, you will be weak. You'll
- 50:23Speaker 1: be weak the rest of your life, and you won't
- 50:26Speaker 1: build anything special or do anything great like that's just
- 50:29Speaker 1: all in all. If that's your relationship with with adversity,
- 50:33Speaker 1: and when things get hard, if you don't lean into it,
- 50:35Speaker 1: you're going to get pushed back your entire life. Now,
- 50:39Speaker 1: on the flip side, it doesn't mean you'll win everything
- 50:42Speaker 1: in life. But if how you respond to adversity in
- 50:46Speaker 1: your life is man, when things get hard, I get harder,
- 50:49Speaker 1: I'm going to push back. I want to win, I'm
- 50:51Speaker 1: going to overcome. If that's your relationship to adversity, you've
- 50:54Speaker 1: got a great chance at a winning life.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Yeah, this is Philippians four eleventh through thirteen, which people
- 50:59Speaker 2: will know Phlippians four or thirteen. But I just think
- 51:01Speaker 2: this is the winning adversity mindset, and Paul demonstrated it perfectly.
- 51:06Speaker 2: For I've learned to be content whatever the circumstance lo needs.
- 51:10Speaker 2: I know what it is to be in need, and
- 51:11Speaker 2: I know what it is to have plenty. I've learned
- 51:14Speaker 2: the secret of being content in any and every situation,
- 51:18Speaker 2: whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or
- 51:20Speaker 2: in want. I can do all this through Him who
- 51:23Speaker 2: gives me strength. He's basically saying, I'm going to just
- 51:27Speaker 2: keep winning. My trust is in God. If I'm going
- 51:30Speaker 2: through hard times, it's because he's shaping me for something.
- 51:32Speaker 2: He's doing something for the future. I'm working out his
- 51:35Speaker 2: purposes in the earth. That's a man who has such
- 51:38Speaker 2: a right view of what life is from an eternal
- 51:41Speaker 2: perspective that it's not about oh, man, I won on
- 51:44Speaker 2: this deal or I lost on this deal, or things
- 51:45Speaker 2: are good or things are bad. It's always about moving
- 51:48Speaker 2: God's plans forward in the earth, which is not about you,
- 51:51Speaker 2: which is about something so much greater. And when you
- 51:53Speaker 2: have that mindset, man, you're always winning, right because You're
- 51:56Speaker 2: always moving the ball forward, whether it looks like how
- 51:58Speaker 2: you thought it would or not.
- 52:00Speaker 1: So remember this a great life. A great life does
- 52:03Speaker 1: not happen on accident. A great life is going to
- 52:06Speaker 1: be driven by your intentional choices. What you repeatedly do,
- 52:10Speaker 1: the things that you believe in life. It's a lens
- 52:13Speaker 1: for your future. What you focus on is going to
- 52:16Speaker 1: determine where you're going to go. What you repeatedly do
- 52:19Speaker 1: is who you're going to become. Who you hang out
- 52:21Speaker 1: with is going to determine what's right for you. When
- 52:24Speaker 1: you tolerate the wrong things, you're going to get wrong
- 52:27Speaker 1: in your life. And when you won't stand for anything
- 52:29Speaker 1: that isn't right, you're going to see more righteousness in
- 52:32Speaker 1: your life. What you commit to, the contracts you take
- 52:35Speaker 1: on in life and business and marriage, that's going to
- 52:38Speaker 1: determine what your future looks, and ultimately, how you respond
- 52:41Speaker 1: to adversity will open the door or close the door
- 52:44Speaker 1: on a great life.
