Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, let's go to Vincent mcavenie, a UK europe correspondent
- 0:02Speaker 1: with his really only one thing happening. Apparently Andrew mount
- 0:05Speaker 1: Betten Windsor has been arrested. If you were just waking
- 0:07Speaker 1: to this news, big story, big crisis for the royal family.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Well more of an ongoing story, but quite at the
- 0:13Speaker 1: development overnight. So let's go to Vincent. Now, Vincent, so
- 0:18Speaker 1: what happened? How did this all shake out?
- 0:22Speaker 2: A huge day here in the UK. The King's brother
- 0:25Speaker 2: was arrested this morning at eight am on his sixty
- 0:28Speaker 2: sixth birthday, after several unmarked police cars surrounded the temporary
- 0:33Speaker 2: property that he's staying in in Norfolk, on the King's
- 0:37Speaker 2: Sandringham estate. He was taken to a nearby police station
- 0:40Speaker 2: where we believe he is being questioned. They are able
- 0:43Speaker 2: to hold him for some twenty four hours. Meanwhile, other
- 0:47Speaker 2: police officers are searching Royal Lodge, which is the home
- 0:51Speaker 2: in Windsor that he's just been evicted from. And as
- 0:57Speaker 2: the King has given a statement, the King and the
- 1:01Speaker 2: rest of the royal family were not made aware of
- 1:03Speaker 2: this at all in advance, and in a statement the
- 1:06Speaker 2: King has said that they are deeply concerned about the news,
- 1:12Speaker 2: but he has said that they are full and wholehearted
- 1:16Speaker 2: in their support and cooperation with the police, saying that
- 1:20Speaker 2: he says, let me state clearly the law must take
- 1:23Speaker 2: its course. So a very remarkable situation here in the UK.
- 1:27Speaker 2: We have not had a member of the royal family
- 1:30Speaker 2: arrested like this. You have to go back about three
- 1:34Speaker 2: hundred and fifty years since a member of the royal
- 1:36Speaker 2: family was sort of captured in any way. So it
- 1:40Speaker 2: is a huge day and a very difficult situation for
- 1:42Speaker 2: the Royal family.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Now he hasn't actually been charged with anything yet, is.
- 1:46Speaker 2: He No, not yet. Now there are at least we
- 1:50Speaker 2: think eight investigations currently going on at the moment into
- 1:55Speaker 2: Epstein in his links with the UK. This is being
- 1:57Speaker 2: led by Thames Valley Police, which is the police for
- 2:00Speaker 2: that covers Windsor, and they're investigating these allegations that whilst
- 2:03Speaker 2: he was a UK Trade envoy in the two thousands
- 2:06Speaker 2: and the early twenty tens, Andrew as we saw, we
- 2:10Speaker 2: think from the Epstein emails, was leaking sensitive government information,
- 2:14Speaker 2: documents and briefings to Epstein, and that is the kind
- 2:18Speaker 2: of nature of this arrest. Now he has always denied
- 2:21Speaker 2: any wrongdoing, but this could just be the start of
- 2:23Speaker 2: a long process because multiple police forces in the UK
- 2:26Speaker 2: are investigating Epstein's travel in and out of this country
- 2:31Speaker 2: on as private jet and allegations that he was trafficking
- 2:34Speaker 2: women to meet Andrew Mantbatten Windsor. There is also now
- 2:38Speaker 2: an investigation within the Met Police within the Diplomatic Protection
- 2:42Speaker 2: teams who provided security for Andrew when he traveled, because
- 2:46Speaker 2: there are allegations that they turned a blind eye to
- 2:49Speaker 2: things that they shouldn't have done whilst they went with
- 2:51Speaker 2: him to the island which Epstein owned in the Caribbean.
- 2:56Speaker 2: So it is moving pretty quickly here in the UK,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, it is. It's very tricky for the royal
- 3:02Speaker 2: family and even for the police because of the way
- 3:05Speaker 2: our laws are in terms of giving kind of commentary
- 3:07Speaker 2: and anything else. So we don't know sort of specifically
- 3:10Speaker 2: yet any the details of why they've pulled him in,
- 3:13Speaker 2: why they've done it this kind of way, but we
- 3:16Speaker 2: expect that he will be we think, either charged or
- 3:21Speaker 2: released in the next twenty four hours and then could
- 3:23Speaker 2: be charged at a later date. But there are more
- 3:26Speaker 2: investigations ongoing.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah, because My understanding is white collar crime like this
- 3:30Speaker 1: should get pulled and could be a couple of hours
- 3:32Speaker 1: and they'll let you go on bail. Do we know
- 3:34Speaker 1: exactly where he is right now or I'm sure at
- 3:36Speaker 1: the stage.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We know he's at the police station being questioned right now.
- 3:40Speaker 2: We do think that, I mean, one of the reasons
- 3:43Speaker 2: potentially why they moved in this way doing it, you know,
- 3:45Speaker 2: because they could have asked him to come in for
- 3:47Speaker 2: question questioning there is that you know, he is potentially
- 3:50Speaker 2: a flight risk. We saw that with the former King
- 3:53Speaker 2: of Spain who disappeared to the Middle East when he
- 3:56Speaker 2: was facing serious, you know, accusations, and you know, also
- 4:01Speaker 2: didn't give him any time to kind of prep all
- 4:03Speaker 2: answers with a legal team or anything like that in advance.
- 4:06Speaker 2: He will have access to a lawyer today in this questioning.
- 4:09Speaker 2: But you know, they obviously thought that there was enough
- 4:11Speaker 2: here that they needed to move quickly.
- 4:13Speaker 1: All right. Vincent mecavinnie a UK europe correspondent.
