- 0:14Are you on the Christian treadmill? You know
- 0:16that one, try hard, do good, fail. Try hard,
- 0:20do good, fail. You know, if you're sick of that
- 0:22life and finding that it simply isn't the abundant
- 0:25life promise with joy and peace and power, then
- 0:28today is the day for you. I have been there,
- 0:30and we as believers don't have to live there.
- 0:33Stay with me, and we'll learn from God's Word
- 0:35how to break out of the Christian treadmill syndrome.
- 0:40Most of us would love to experience real, lasting,
- 0:43positive life change. But we just don't know
- 0:46how to get traction and actually grow. That's
- 0:49the honest question at the heart of this series,
- 0:51Free at Last, How to Break Out of a Destructive
- 0:54Lifestyle. I'm Dave Drury, and this is Living
- 0:57on the Edge. Today, Chip Ingram begins our next
- 1:00message called, Where Do We Get the Power to
- 1:02Change? And the answer is one you don't want
- 1:05to miss. So in case you can't stick around to
- 1:07hear the whole message, be sure to visit livingontheedge
- 1:10.org to catch up when you can. Well, now here's
- 1:13Chip. Where do you get the power to change? Dan
- 1:17came up to me the very first time I ever publicly
- 1:21taught through Ephesians 4, 1 through 6 that
- 1:24we covered last week. I literally got done. A
- 1:27guy walks up to me. He was a young, zealous guy,
- 1:30played for a local college basketball team. We'd
- 1:33gotten to know one another, and I mean, he was
- 1:34living the life. His life was dramatically changing.
- 1:38And I literally got done, and he caught me just
- 1:40as I was going around the corner, and he stops
- 1:43and goes, stop. So I did, and he opens his Bible,
- 1:46and he opens it up right here to Romans chapter
- 1:496. He goes, listen to this. He says, but thanks
- 1:52be to God that though you used to be slaves to
- 1:55sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed this form of teaching
- 1:59in which you were entrusted. you've been set
- 2:02free from sin and have become a slave to righteousness.
- 2:06And this big 6 '4 guard looked at me and goes,
- 2:09that's not true. It doesn't work. I said, what
- 2:12do you mean? He said, well, a lot's changed in
- 2:15my life, but there's some areas, and he was very
- 2:18specific. He said, I can't change. I'm supposed
- 2:23to be transformed, and I can't. What's wrong
- 2:27with me? We had a little discussion, and literally,
- 2:30this is one of those bizarre experiences. I leave
- 2:33that, walk on around, get a cup of coffee between
- 2:36the services, and a young mom that I'd gotten
- 2:39to know pretty well who came from a horrendous
- 2:41background, drug, alcohol addictions, fractured
- 2:44relationships, difficult home life, had come
- 2:46to Christ, amazing transformation the last couple
- 2:49years, and she walks up to me with an open Bible,
- 2:52Romans chapter 6. I'm thinking, there's something
- 2:55going on here. And she goes to a different verse.
- 2:59She goes, look, look right here. Verse 22. It
- 3:02says, but now that you've been set free from
- 3:04sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit
- 3:06you reap is holiness and it results in eternal
- 3:10life. And she goes, this isn't working. I'm thinking,
- 3:15I guess I really had a bad day on this one. And
- 3:18I said, well, what do you mean? She goes, well,
- 3:20I'm not on alcohol. God's really changed my life.
- 3:24But I smoke dope every day. Every single day.
- 3:28And I'm concerned about my four -year -old daughter.
- 3:30And I've tried to quit and I've prayed to quit
- 3:33and I want to quit and I can't quit. Where do
- 3:36you get the power to change? That's what we're
- 3:40going to talk about today. Listen to the Apostle
- 3:43Paul, interestingly, in the very next chapter
- 3:46after chapter six. He says, for I desire to do
- 3:49what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For
- 3:53what I do is not good. The evil that I don't
- 3:56want to do, this I keep on doing. I mean, he's
- 3:59basically saying, I want to do what's right.
- 4:01I find myself not doing it. And the very thing
- 4:03I don't want to do, I find myself doing that.
- 4:06Anybody in this room having that struggle at
- 4:08all? Yeah, same here. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of
- 4:13the book of Ephesians, this is what God has done
- 4:16for you. Chapter 4 opens up, and this is the
- 4:19practice. I urge you, therefore, Paul says, as
- 4:23a prisoner of the Lord, to walk in a manner worthy
- 4:27of your new life. And then he said, the way you
- 4:30walk in this new life, the way that your belief
- 4:33and behavior tell the same story is the cocoon,
- 4:37if you will, of community. He says, be humble
- 4:39and gentle and patient, bearing with one another
- 4:42in love, making every effort to maintain the
- 4:44unity of the body and the bond of peace. And
- 4:47then he gives us the reason, and he went through
- 4:49those amazing high things. There's one God, one
- 4:51Lord, one faith, one baptism. And so just by
- 4:56way of review, and then I thought I would just
- 4:58sort of poke at you and poke at me, I thought
- 5:00since I wasn't completely humble and gentle and
- 5:04patient and bearing with other people this week,
- 5:06I thought I would put down the opposite of those.
- 5:09And if I'm not humble, it means I'm proud and
- 5:11selfish. And if I'm not gentle, it means I'm
- 5:13demanding and harsh. If I'm not patient, it means
- 5:16I'm impatient and angry. If I don't bear with
- 5:18people, it means I'm kind of critical of them,
- 5:20especially those that live inside my house and
- 5:22judgmental. And if I'm not making every effort,
- 5:24I'm kind of slothful and actually I disengage
- 5:27instead of be connected to people. Is there anybody
- 5:30other than me that had some of the experiences
- 5:32on the right side of that column? Yeah. Now listen,
- 5:36here's what I want you to understand. Christ
- 5:39comes into our life. His game plan is to turn
- 5:43us from a green caterpillar and be metamorphosized.
- 5:47Remember, a walk is a process into the transformation
- 5:50of a beautiful butterfly in terms of our character
- 5:53and likeness of Christ. But listen to what the
- 5:56Apostle Paul, he goes on to say. He says, now
- 5:59if I do what I do not want to do. He identifies
- 6:03the problem. It's no longer I who do it, but
- 6:06it's sin living in me that does it. What a wretched
- 6:10man that I am. Who will rescue me from this body
- 6:12of death? And then he gives us the answer. Thanks
- 6:16be to God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. And
- 6:20so the question is, how did Jesus conquer sin?
- 6:25And how does that work practically in everyday
- 6:28life? The apostle Paul says it's going to be
- 6:30a struggle. In Romans chapter six, he's gonna
- 6:34give us some truth we'll look at a little bit
- 6:35later about what's actually true of this. But
- 6:38how do you overcome the struggle with sin? I
- 6:42mean, what did I say to those two people? What
- 6:44did the conversation go like? And just before
- 6:48we go too far, let me give you a private moment
- 6:51that you don't have to share with anyone. If
- 6:57there is an area in your life that you would
- 6:59say real honestly, You really want to change.
- 7:04You have the desire to change. You know God wants
- 7:06it to change. But you feel stuck. What's it with
- 7:12you? Is it a critical attitude? Is it your addiction
- 7:17to work or media? Is it some addiction? Is it,
- 7:21you know, you fill that in. Because here's what
- 7:25I want you to get. This isn't theoretical. God
- 7:29has given us all the power we need to change,
- 7:32but until we understand what happened to Jesus,
- 7:36are you ready for this? From the time on Friday
- 7:39night when he died to the time on Sunday morning
- 7:42when he rose from the dead, if you don't understand
- 7:45what he did, you'll never understand how to access
- 7:49the power to change. Because what is true in
- 7:53all the New Testament teaching is that what is
- 7:56ever true of Jesus, When you are united to him
- 7:59by faith, you are co -crucified and co -resurrected.
- 8:03And so whatever is true of him becomes true of
- 8:07us. And the Christian life isn't trying hard
- 8:10to live like Jesus or achieve some morality.
- 8:12The Christian life is a relationship with God
- 8:15the Father through the work of the cross as the
- 8:18Spirit enters your life and you live this new
- 8:20life. Remember, I am crucified with Christ nevertheless.
- 8:24In this human body I live, yet not I, but Christ
- 8:26lives in me. And this new life I live, how do
- 8:29we live it? By faith in the Son of God. Out of
- 8:32what? Who loved me and gave himself for me. Now,
- 8:36verse 7 through 10 of Ephesians 4 will explain
- 8:39how it happens. But to each one of us, grace
- 8:44was given according to the measure of Christ's
- 8:46gift. You might circle the little phrase grace
- 8:49given. It means an endowment. It's not the same
- 8:52word as a spiritual gift. It's the idea of a
- 8:55sacred trust or an endowment, something, a treasure
- 8:58that's being given to you. And therefore, it
- 9:01says, he reaches back and quotes Psalm 68, 18.
- 9:05He makes some small modifications. But he says,
- 9:08when he, speaking of Jesus, ascended on high,
- 9:11he led captive a host of captives, and he gave
- 9:15gifts to men. Underline he gave gifts to men
- 9:18because right after this, he's going to explain
- 9:21the gifts. We'll talk about the gifts and how
- 9:23spiritual gifts really interact to help us be
- 9:26conformed to the image of Christ. And then now
- 9:29he explains. Now this expression, he ascended,
- 9:31what does it mean? Except that he also descended
- 9:35into the lower parts of the earth. He who descended
- 9:38is himself also he who ascended far above all
- 9:41the heavens. And here's a purpose clause. So
- 9:44that he might fill. All things. Now, I don't
- 9:48know about you. I didn't grow up reading the
- 9:50Bible. I never opened the New Testament until
- 9:51I was 18. As a brand new Christian, the big thick
- 9:54part, the Old Testament, I didn't touch that
- 9:56for about a year. I couldn't understand it. But
- 9:59even when I started reading through the New Testament
- 10:01two or three times, and then I began reading
- 10:03through the Bible, I remember the first time
- 10:05reading this and thinking, I bet this is really
- 10:09important. But I don't have a clue what there's,
- 10:12what's it mean he ascended, he descended lower
- 10:14parts of the earth, captives. Does any of that
- 10:16make sense to you? Now for some of you it may.
- 10:19But here's what I want you to get. It tells us
- 10:23Jesus' identity and it tells us what he did on
- 10:28our behalf in such a way that if you get it like
- 10:31the Ephesians got it, it'll help you understand
- 10:34how to grasp the power to really change. These
- 10:38key words, he led captive a host of captives.
- 10:42Right above that, I want you to write victorious
- 10:44Savior. These key words are going to tell us
- 10:47Jesus' identity and what he actually did. The
- 10:50next key phrase is lower parts of the earth.
- 10:52Above that, write the word righteous judge. The
- 10:56last phrase is that he might fill all things.
- 11:00Above that, write Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
- 11:05And what you're going to see is the Apostle Paul
- 11:07will take some different pieces and pull them
- 11:10all together and he's going to describe for you
- 11:13and me what Jesus accomplished and whatever he
- 11:16accomplished that's true of him becomes true
- 11:18of us. Phrase number one. He led captive a host
- 11:22of captives. This imagery is from the Old Testament
- 11:25but was still true in many in the Roman world.
- 11:28Here's the picture. You go to battle against
- 11:31your foes. Maybe they're in a large city. You
- 11:33surround the city. You build ramparts. You may
- 11:36cut off the water, cut off the food. It may take
- 11:39months or even years in some of those battles.
- 11:41And then you defeat your enemy. And once you
- 11:44defeat your enemy in those days, you would often
- 11:46deport them to other places. And when you would
- 11:49defeat your enemy, you would come back to your
- 11:51hometown and celebrate the victory. Often the
- 11:55general or the king would be on a white horse.
- 11:57Behind him would be all of his army, often in
- 12:00their, you know, their best battle array. Behind
- 12:03them would be the captives that are described
- 12:06here. And they would chain them three, five,
- 12:09seven across, and they would be stripped to the
- 12:11waist. Or sometimes, it gets a little graphic,
- 12:14they would strip them naked. And then behind
- 12:17them would be what's called the spoils. There
- 12:19might be, you know, all the cattle, all the donkeys,
- 12:21all the gold, all the silver, all the jewelries.
- 12:24So this is a procession or a train. And so imagine
- 12:28this general coming back into his hometown, people
- 12:30cheering. He's on a white horse. He's demonstrating
- 12:33we've won the victory. Here's who won the victory,
- 12:37the soldiers. Behind them, here's our humiliated,
- 12:40defeated foe. And behind them, the evidence of
- 12:43the great victory are the spoils, gold, silver,
- 12:46animals. And so the people would cheer. The military
- 12:51would get much of the spoils, but then the spoils
- 12:54or the gifts as an evidence of the victory would
- 12:57be given to some of the people in the town. So
- 12:59if I was a lady cheering, I might get a cow or
- 13:03I might get a bracelet. And so I would get these
- 13:05gifts, but these gifts are an indication of a
- 13:09victory that's been won and a foe that has been
- 13:12defeated. And Paul uses this imagery as Jesus
- 13:16as the victorious victor over sin, over death,
- 13:22and over Satan. And he's going to talk in a minute
- 13:25about the captives, who he's overcome. And what
- 13:30he's done in giving us gifts or spiritual gifts
- 13:33are the evidence of that victory. The next key
- 13:36word is he's the righteous judge. It says the
- 13:39lower parts of the earth. Now, if you're familiar
- 13:42with the New Testament, and some are and some
- 13:44aren't, let me encourage you later today to just
- 13:47read Luke chapter 16, beginning at about verse
- 13:4919. And Jesus tells a parable, and the story
- 13:53of the parable is pretty simple, but it gives
- 13:55us a picture of the Jewish view of what happened
- 13:59to people when they died in the Old Testament
- 14:01economy. And he tells the story of a righteous
- 14:04beggar named Lazarus and a wicked man who was
- 14:09absolutely selfish and uncaring. They both die.
- 14:14and they go into Sheol, the place of the dead,
- 14:17and there's two compartments. There's paradise,
- 14:20the abode of the righteous, and then there's
- 14:23Hades, or hell, which is the abode of the wicked.
- 14:27And so you have this picture of Lazarus is with
- 14:30Abraham's bosom in paradise, and this wicked
- 14:33man looks, and there's a great chasm, and he
- 14:36asks, please tell him to bring, I'm tortured
- 14:38with this, some water for me, and he says, There's
- 14:41no way that you can go from one place to the
- 14:44other. It's fixed. And he says, well, then tell
- 14:47my five brothers. And the response is, even if
- 14:50someone was raised from the dead, your brothers
- 14:53wouldn't believe. They have Moses and the prophets.
- 14:55But the picture I want you to get is there's
- 14:58this reality of a Jewish Old Testament picture
- 15:01of what was going on when people die. The lower
- 15:05parts of the earth then, here's what happens.
- 15:08When Jesus went into the lower parts of the earth,
- 15:10he made a proclamation and an announcement. He
- 15:15proclaimed a victory's been won to the abode
- 15:19of the wicked. And then he proclaimed the good
- 15:21news that the Savior, the Messiah, is going to
- 15:24do what? All that you hoped for and all the animal
- 15:27sacrifices, all that you believed of God, all
- 15:30the promises of God, they're finished. It's been
- 15:33won. The Messiah has come. Follow along if you
- 15:36will. Hades, this is what it says in 1 Peter
- 15:393, 18 and 19. For Christ died once for sin, the
- 15:45righteous for the unrighteous. Why? To bring
- 15:48us to God. Important, the word preached here
- 15:59is not the same word we'll see in just a minute.
- 16:02This is a word for a pronouncement of judgment.
- 16:07The lower parts of paradise, 1 Peter 4, 6. For
- 16:11this reason, the gospel was preached, different
- 16:13word, even to those who are now dead, so that
- 16:16they might be judged according to men with regard
- 16:19to the body, but live according to God with regard
- 16:22to the spirit. Now, let me ask you to do something,
- 16:26if you will. Open your Bibles to John chapter
- 16:285. Some of you are looking at me like, this is
- 16:31really weird. Okay, I get that. What I want you
- 16:35to do is open to John chapter 5, and I want you
- 16:37to listen to what Jesus said would happen. He's
- 16:42preaching in John chapter 5, beginning at verse
- 16:4524. Now listen to what he says. He's giving this
- 16:50tremendous offer. He says, truly, truly, or I
- 16:52tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and
- 16:56believes in him who sent me, notice the tense
- 16:58of the verb, has eternal life. And the result
- 17:02of this present possession of eternal life when
- 17:04you believe or trust in Christ is he will not
- 17:07be condemned but is crossed over from death to
- 17:09life. I tell you the truth. Notice what he says.
- 17:13A time is coming and has now come when the dead
- 17:17will hear the voice of the Son of God and those
- 17:21who hear will live. Notice what Jesus' role is.
- 17:25For the Father has life in himself and so he's
- 17:29granted the Son to have life in himself. And
- 17:31he has given him authority to what? To judge
- 17:35because he is the son of man. Notice the very
- 17:38next line, verse 28. Do not be amazed at this
- 17:41for a time is coming when all who are in their
- 17:45graves will hear his voice and will come out.
- 17:49And those who have done good will rise to live
- 17:52and those who have done evil will rise to be
- 17:54condemned. And the apostle Paul is saying in
- 17:58this little picture here, When he went into the
- 18:01lower parts of the earth, Jesus was first the
- 18:05victorious victor over sin and death and Satan.
- 18:09Second, he went into the lower parts of the earth
- 18:12and he condemned and gave judgment on the wicked
- 18:15and then told those who'd been trusting in him,
- 18:19it's over. Your faith has been fulfilled. Finally,
- 18:23this last unique phrase that he might fill all
- 18:27things. And the idea of Phil here is the idea
- 18:31that Jesus is taking back all territory. He's
- 18:35the Lord of lords and the king of kings. There's
- 18:38victory over sin. There's victory over death.
- 18:41There's victory over Satan. Remember when he's
- 18:43tempted by the devil? And the devil said to him,
- 18:46if you will bow down before me, I will give you
- 18:49these kingdoms. Apparently in God's economy,
- 18:53he had responsibility over a certain reign upon
- 18:56the earth because of sin. And Jesus avoided that
- 19:01temptation, but now what he does, Colossians
- 19:042 says, he destroyed the works of the devil,
- 19:06and he is now proclaiming he fills all things.
- 19:10He's the ruler. He's the Lord. He's the king
- 19:13of kings now in real time. It's a defeated foe.
- 19:16You can look death in the eyes because its sting
- 19:19is gone. Sin's power, broken. Sin's penalty,
- 19:22gone. In fact, we pick up. Listen, Revelation
- 19:26chapter 5. Follow along and listen carefully
- 19:29for the very end. They sang a new song. You are
- 19:33worthy to take the scroll and open its seals
- 19:35because you were slain. And with your blood you
- 19:38purchased men from God in every tribe, in every
- 19:40language, in people and nation. You have made
- 19:43them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our
- 19:45God and they will reign on the earth. And then
- 19:47I looked and I heard the voice of many angels
- 19:49numbering thousands upon thousands and 10 ,000
- 19:52times 10 ,000. And they encircled the throne
- 19:55and the living creatures and the elders. And
- 19:57in a loud voice, they said, worthy is the lamb
- 19:59who was slain to receive power and wealth and
- 20:02wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise.
- 20:05Then I heard every creature in heaven. and on
- 20:11earth and under the earth and on the sea and
- 20:15all that is in them singing to him who sits on
- 20:19the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor
- 20:21and glory and power forever. We've taken some
- 20:27very remote pieces and a couple hard passages
- 20:30and the very words of Jesus and we have understood
- 20:34what does it mean that he ascended? that he also
- 20:37descended, and that now he is the ruler, the
- 20:40king, the lord of lords. He's a victorious savior,
- 20:44and everything that happened with regard to him
- 20:47of conquering sin and death and Satan is now
- 20:50true of you. And at the very bottom, just so
- 20:52there's not confusion, what you need to understand
- 20:54is all saints or all believers, we all get saved
- 20:58the same way. If you were an Old Testament saint,
- 21:01you believed. by faith, that their sacrifices
- 21:05each year in the Day of Atonement were putting
- 21:08you sort of in hold. And one day, a Savior would
- 21:11come, and your sins would be completely forgiven
- 21:13and dealt with. So they were looking forward
- 21:16to Christ. We now, as New Testament believers
- 21:19or saints, we look back on what Christ has done.
- 21:22But all believers, Old or New Testament, we all
- 21:25are saved on the basis of Christ's finished work
- 21:28on the cross by grace through faith. Now, our
- 21:35theology lesson is over. I hope you'll look up
- 21:39some of those verses, scratch your head, read
- 21:43a couple commentaries, scratch your head a little
- 21:46bit more because you will. But here's what I
- 21:49want you to get. There are three undeniable facts
- 21:52and three principles that out of this passage
- 21:56will help you and me. understand how to deal
- 22:00with the struggle of sin and tap into the power
- 22:03that we already possess. Implication number one,
- 22:06fact is, Christ is a conquering victor over sin,
- 22:10death, and Satan. The power to live a new life
- 22:14was made possible by his death and resurrection.
- 22:17By his death and resurrection. Colossians 2,
- 22:2213 through 15. Notice how Paul in this passage
- 22:26talks about the victory, talks about the conquering
- 22:30of evil. He says he made you, speaking to the
- 22:33Colossian church, alive together with him. How?
- 22:36Having forgiven all your transgressions, having
- 22:39nailed it to the cross. And then notice this
- 22:42addition, and having disarmed the rulers and
- 22:45the authorities, he made a public spectacle of
- 22:48them, triumphing over them by the cross. And
- 22:52he's speaking of this event that we just talked
- 22:54about. The principle is life change always begins
- 22:59with the truth. It's objective. Here's what I
- 23:03want you to get. We are so in an existential
- 23:05world. We think it's our experience. We think
- 23:08life change is trying harder. We think there's
- 23:11some formula. We think of religious activities.
- 23:13We have all kind of people telling you self -help
- 23:15ways of how life change happens. Life change
- 23:18metamorphosis from the inside out, New Testament,
- 23:21it always begins with the truth. And here's three
- 23:25truths that come out of this. Number one, you
- 23:28are free. Sin's power has been broken. Write
- 23:31that in your notes, I am free. Number two, you
- 23:35are forgiven. Not only has sin's power been broken,
- 23:39but sin's penalty has been paid for. Christ,
- 23:43when he hung upon the cross, the sins of all
- 23:46people of all time were placed on him and he
- 23:49absorbed it for you in your place. So write,
- 23:53I'm forgiven. And third, you are secure. Death
- 23:58doesn't have dominance over you anymore because
- 24:01you have eternal life. The moment you turned
- 24:04from your sin and the empty hands of faith trusted
- 24:07in Christ, the Spirit of God came into you, sealed
- 24:09you with the Spirit. adopted you into his family,
- 24:13took you from the kingdom of darkness into the
- 24:15kingdom of light, gave you new relationship with
- 24:18God the Father through the blood of Christ, relationship
- 24:20with the supernatural community called the body
- 24:22of Christ, gave you an inheritance, he's preparing
- 24:25a place for you, deposited spiritual gifts in
- 24:27you, gave purpose for your life, and you'll never
- 24:29be the same. But it happened in objective space
- 24:33-time history. These are facts. Satan does not
- 24:38have power over you anymore. You can give in
- 24:41to sin. You can give in to temptation. You can
- 24:44be fearful of demonic spirits. But you, as a
- 24:47believer, a child of God, a son or a daughter,
- 24:49can look death straight in the eye, can look
- 24:51sin and realize you can give in to it, but it
- 24:54doesn't have power over you. You're not a slave
- 24:56to it. You have a choice. You have power. You
- 24:59have access. Truth. That's the beginning of real
- 25:06Life change. You can feel it or not feel it.
- 25:11You're forgiven, you're free, and you're secure.
- 25:15Begins with the truth. Fact number two. We become
- 25:19co -partakers of Christ's victory over sin, death,
- 25:23and Satan the moment we receive Christ as our
- 25:27personal savior by faith. Remember what I said?
- 25:32Whatever is true of Jesus, The teaching of the
- 25:36New Testament and the Bible, it's true of you.
- 25:40This gets a little bit vague and hard to understand.
- 25:42I've got a picture that will help you. But I
- 25:44want you, if you will, turn to Romans chapter
- 25:466. I'm going to ask you to do a little work here.
- 25:50And as you turn to Romans chapter 6, I want to
- 25:54read a few of the verses that came before the
- 25:56questions that the young man asked me. That came
- 25:59before the questions that the young mom asked
- 26:02me. The Apostle Paul, what I'm going to share
- 26:06is so radical, even in that day, because God
- 26:11is going to say that the grace of God is so overwhelming,
- 26:15no matter where you are, how far you are, however
- 26:18deep the sin is, grace abounds still more. So
- 26:22much so that people were bending the truth, and
- 26:24they started saying, hey, you know something?
- 26:26This New Testament stuff's really great. If God
- 26:29gives more grace, if you sin more, why don't
- 26:31we just start sinning more? Chapter 6 opens up
- 26:35with an emphatic, that is not at all an option.
- 26:38He says, what shall we say then? Shall we go
- 26:40on sinning so that grace may increase? By no
- 26:43means. Now, follow carefully. This is the key.
- 26:46We died to sin. How then can we live in it any
- 26:50longer? Or do you not know that all of us who
- 26:52were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
- 26:55into his death? We were therefore buried with
- 26:58him through baptism and death in order that just
- 27:01as Christ was raised from the dead through the
- 27:04glory of the Father, we too might live, or literally
- 27:08it's our same word, might walk in newness of
- 27:11life. Now follow along carefully. If we've been
- 27:15united with him like this in his death, we will
- 27:18certainly be united with him in his resurrection.
- 27:21For we know that our old self was crucified with
- 27:24him so that the body of sin might be done away,
- 27:27that we should no longer be slaves to sin because
- 27:30anyone who has died is freed from sin. Now, if
- 27:34we died with Christ, we will believe we'll also
- 27:36live with him. For we know that since Christ
- 27:38was raised from the dead, he cannot die again.
- 27:41Death no longer has mastery over him. The death
- 27:45he died, he died to sin once and for all, but
- 27:48the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same
- 27:51way, application. Count yourselves dead to sin,
- 27:55but alive to God in Christ Jesus. And then he
- 27:57begins to explain what that is and how to do
- 28:00that. And we'll discuss that as we go along in
- 28:02this process. You will learn how to count yourself
- 28:06dead to sin and how to present your members by
- 28:09faith. But let me give you a picture that's been
- 28:11very helpful to me. I'm going to just take this
- 28:15block of wood. I put a cross on it. And let's
- 28:18let this represent Christ. And let's have this
- 28:21very heavy looking bolt represent us apart from
- 28:25Christ. And all I want you to get is what we
- 28:27know is wood has a certain nature or properties
- 28:30and steel bolts have a certain nature or properties.
- 28:35There's a gravitational pull in life. And there's
- 28:39a gravitational pull for all of us away from
- 28:41God called sin. And left to ourselves, does anybody
- 28:45know if I take this heavy bolt and put it in
- 28:47this water, what will happen? Any predictions?
- 28:50It's going to sink. Let's test this theory. My
- 28:53lands, we're an amazing group. Now, the properties
- 28:58of wood are quite different. If I take this piece
- 29:00of wood and lay it in the water, can you tell
- 29:03me what's going to happen? It's going to float.
- 29:05Why? Is it better? It's different. It has a completely
- 29:10different nature. What the Bible teaches in Romans
- 29:13chapter 6, what Paul is explaining in verses
- 29:177 through 10 of Ephesians chapter 4, is that
- 29:20Christ died in your place. He descended to the
- 29:26lower parts of the earth. He declared victory
- 29:30over the wicked. He proclaimed new life. He rose
- 29:35from the dead. He's conquered sin. Death and
- 29:39Satan. And the moment that you believe and trust
- 29:42in him, you become a co -partaker by faith, which
- 29:47is this rubber band. And so what you see is when
- 29:52God the Father sees you, remember justified?
- 29:55When God sees you, and you need to get this.
- 29:58You need to get this in your intellect and get
- 30:01it into your heart. God declared you righteous
- 30:04based on his work. And when he looks at you,
- 30:07Despite your experiential times of sin, he sees
- 30:11you as righteous, as forgiven, as through the
- 30:14lens of the blood of his son, as precious, as
- 30:18a child, as adopted. You'll never be more loved
- 30:22than you are today. And you're connected to him
- 30:25forever. Now in this journey of sanctification,
- 30:29how do I live out what's true of me? He says
- 30:32this is how it works. Whatever is true of him
- 30:35is now true of you. Now, can I pull the rubber
- 30:40band off and get wet if I want to? Sure. I am
- 30:45crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I live.
- 30:47Yet not I, but Christ lives in me. And this life
- 30:51I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God
- 30:54who loves me and gave himself for me. It's not
- 31:00religious activity. It's not a formula. It's
- 31:03not my self -effort of trying hard. It's understanding
- 31:07the bedrock truth that when you trusted Christ,
- 31:11you're connected to him for all eternity. So
- 31:15principle number one, life change begins with
- 31:18the truth. Principle number two, we must act
- 31:21on the truth for life change to occur. Life change
- 31:27demands that we act on the truth. Do you know
- 31:30what acting on the truth is called in the Bible?
- 31:33Faith. Faith, that's what it is. Now, faith isn't
- 31:38a feeling. Faith isn't some ooey -gooey thought.
- 31:40Faith is believing what God has said to the point
- 31:44of acting on it, whether I feel like it or not.
- 31:48Let me say that again, because sometimes I think
- 31:49we think, I don't have enough faith. You don't
- 31:51have to feel anything. Faith. is believing what
- 31:56God has said to the point I act on it whether
- 31:59I feel like it or not. God says that sexual purity
- 32:02is my will for this relationship. I don't feel
- 32:06like that maybe in a relationship. And I say,
- 32:08you know what? I'm gonna act on that. And the
- 32:10moment I act and make provision to be sexually
- 32:13pure, God gives grace. And then he does a lot
- 32:16of wonderful things in that relationship that
- 32:18sin block. Faith says, I'm gonna prioritize the
- 32:22first portion of my life my future, my priorities,
- 32:26and my relationships by what God says. I don't
- 32:29always feel like loving my wife. I don't always
- 32:31feel like turning off the remote and walking
- 32:33over and dealing with one of my kids. I don't
- 32:35always feel like doing, but when by faith I trust,
- 32:38the other side of faith is the moment I take
- 32:40that step, it's obedience and I get grace. That's
- 32:44how transformation occurs. Left to myself, I
- 32:47don't do very well. So there's community of people
- 32:49who their gifts and their love and their encouragement
- 32:52helped me on my walk. Because remember, what
- 32:53did we learn about the little babies when they
- 32:55walk? Step, step, step, great then, right? And
- 33:00we're all going to keep falling. And we have
- 33:02a heavenly father who understands, who says,
- 33:05look, that's who you really are. My dad did not
- 33:10grow up as a Christian. And I had been a Christian
- 33:13a year. And you know, sometimes when God's changing
- 33:15you, it's so close to you, you don't see how
- 33:16it really works. And all I knew was what I just
- 33:20shared with you about what Christ had done. I
- 33:23trusted him in 1972. I went away to college and
- 33:27there was a bricklayer who was a godly man who
- 33:30came up and taught me how to get in the Bible
- 33:32for myself. And so I started reading the Bible
- 33:34in the mornings and I memorized, you know, just
- 33:37a few verses. And I got in a small group and
- 33:40did some Bible study. You know, little by little,
- 33:42just the old was passing away and new had come,
- 33:44but I had a long way to go. And I came home that
- 33:47summer, and after about three weeks, my dad said,
- 33:49what happened to you? I said, what do you mean?
- 33:53He said, what happened to you? I said, I mean,
- 33:56what do you mean what happened to me? There's
- 33:59a piece about you I can't understand. And I said,
- 34:02well, Dad, I... You know, we went to church,
- 34:05but we didn't believe the Bible, and we didn't
- 34:07know about a personal relationship to God, so
- 34:08it was hard to say. I said, well, I put my faith
- 34:11in Christ, and I have a new relationship with
- 34:14God. So he said, well, how'd you get it? And
- 34:17honestly, this is not really good news for the
- 34:19people that were helping me, I suppose. I said,
- 34:21I don't know. You know? And so eventually I just
- 34:25said, well, the one key I said, I started reading
- 34:28the Bible. And so, you know, you got an ex -Marine,
- 34:31okay. That's how you do it. He got up at five
- 34:34every morning, read the Bible for a year, almost.
- 34:37Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Matthew, Mark,
- 34:38Luke, and John. Then finally, like six months
- 34:40into it, he goes, do these guys not know the
- 34:42story? They keep telling the same story over
- 34:44and over. And I had to say, well, actually, Dad,
- 34:46you know, Mark's writing to the Romans and Luke
- 34:48to the Greeks. And, you know, it's sort of a
- 34:50composite picture. And after six months, my dad
- 34:53comes to me. And, I mean, he'd been in religious
- 34:56all his life. And in his own words, he would
- 34:58say, I went to church whether I was drunk or
- 34:59not. So he's a recovering alcoholic who, because
- 35:03he knew he was going to lose his marriage, stopped
- 35:04drinking a year earlier, and he wants to change
- 35:07and doesn't know how. His kid comes home, and
- 35:09there's something different. His kid can't explain
- 35:11even, you know, I wish I could have said, oh,
- 35:14Dad, it's a substitutionary work of Christ. He
- 35:17died in your place on the cross, rose from the
- 35:19dead. What he wants to do by faith turned to
- 35:21him. I couldn't explain it. And so he just, but
- 35:24here's the point. Truth. Life change begins with
- 35:28the truth. He got in the Bible. I'll tell you,
- 35:31with the people that I meet and talk to in terms
- 35:32of their journey with God, I would much rather
- 35:35have someone read the Bible with me and have
- 35:37coffee and might put my arm around them as a
- 35:39friend and let's just talk about what this is
- 35:41like for months as opposed to someone feeling
- 35:44some quick moment of guilt and praying a quick
- 35:46prayer. Because I will tell you, God's word never
- 35:49returns void. After six months, he says to me,
- 35:52you know something? I don't know what this whole
- 35:55deal is you have, but it has something to do
- 35:57with faith. I mean, here's a guy that's never
- 36:00read the Bible. It's faith. And I said, dad,
- 36:03I think you're right. He says, so what do I do?
- 36:05I said, I don't know. You know? So he goes another
- 36:09nine months or so, and I go off to school, and
- 36:12I get a call a little bit later, and he said,
- 36:14I got it. I got it. I said, what do you mean
- 36:15you got it? I'm a Christian now. I said, really?
- 36:18What happened, Dad? He said, well, I knew it
- 36:20was about faith. I kept reading, reading, reading,
- 36:21and I don't know where it came from, but I was
- 36:23walking by my dresser, and there was a little
- 36:25pamphlet called The Four Spiritual Laws, and
- 36:27I read it. It had all the stuff I've been reading.
- 36:29God has a plan for your life. What separates
- 36:31you from God is your sin. Christ died in your
- 36:33place. You need to trust him by faith, and it
- 36:36had a little prayer. And it was like, wow, so
- 36:38that's how you do it. And he says, what I did
- 36:40is I got down right on my bed, and I said, God,
- 36:42I have killed thousands and thousands and thousands
- 36:44of people, and I've lived with nightmares and
- 36:46shame all my life, but I received the blood of
- 36:49Jesus to forgive me right now at this moment.
- 36:51And in my dad's late 50s, he came to Christ.
- 36:55Life change begins with the truth. Life change
- 37:00demands that we act on the truth by faith. Let
- 37:04me give you the greatest example of acting on
- 37:06the truth. At the very bottom, I put a little
- 37:08chart, if you will, and I put a verse, because
- 37:12it's truth, and I want you to get to act on it
- 37:14if that's where you're at. The truth is Romans
- 37:176, 23. It says, for the wages of sin is death,
- 37:20but the free gift of God is eternal life through
- 37:22Jesus Christ our Lord. Now, what I've put there
- 37:25is a picture of kind of like two cliffs, if you
- 37:28will. There's us on this side, and there's God
- 37:32on this side. And when you look at that, on the
- 37:35us side, it says the wages. What are wages? It's
- 37:39what you earn, right? It's what you get for what
- 37:41you do. The wages of our sin, what's sin? It
- 37:45just means you missed the mark. It means you
- 37:47blow it. It means you had a thought that you
- 37:50know was not a good thought. It means that, you
- 37:53know, you know what's right to do, but you don't
- 37:54do it. Everyone has sinned and falls short of
- 37:56the glory of God. But the wages of sin, there's
- 38:00this chasm, like in Luke 16. There's this chasm
- 38:04that separates us from God forever. But the free
- 38:08gift of God through Jesus, you have eternal life.
- 38:14So what you need to do is you need to pull your
- 38:17pen out, and I want you to make a bridge because
- 38:20Jesus is the bridge to life. So make a little
- 38:23bridge, okay? And once you make the horizontal
- 38:26line, why don't you make it a really cool, nifty
- 38:28bridge and put a vertical line. And if you put
- 38:32a vertical line and a horizontal line, what do
- 38:34you have there? You got a cross. Now here, we're
- 38:39right back to what Jesus said. Jesus said, the
- 38:42day will come when I'm gonna speak to all that
- 38:45are dead. One day, all of us will be dead. And
- 38:48one day, Jesus will return. And he said, truly,
- 38:51truly, or verily, verily, it's just for emphasis,
- 38:54this is really important, I say to all of you,
- 38:57those of you who hear, my word and believe on
- 39:05him who sent me has, present tense, eternal life.
- 39:10So you are looking at truth. The truth is there's
- 39:14a fact that the eternal son of God, fully man,
- 39:17fully God, walked upon the earth, lived a perfect
- 39:19life. He built a bridge and he paid for the wages
- 39:24of your sin and he atoned or he's covering death.
- 39:28And it's by grace, it's a complete free gift.
- 39:31And if by faith you receive the free gift, you
- 39:34move from this side of the bridge to the other
- 39:36side. And according to Jesus, it means you hear
- 39:39his word and then you believe. And when you do
- 39:44that, the gift of eternal life, you're taken
- 39:48from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of
- 39:50light. You're free, you're forgiven, and you're
- 39:56secure. There's some of you today that this is
- 40:01the most wonderful day in your life ever. Today
- 40:04is better than the day that you were born because
- 40:07today's the day that you will be born a second
- 40:10time or be born spiritually. Jesus said physical
- 40:13life requires a physical birth. Spiritual life
- 40:16requires a spiritual birth. If you have never
- 40:20by faith not come to church, not tried to be
- 40:24a moral person, not tried to read the Bible a
- 40:26little bit. I'm not talking about giving to the
- 40:28United Way. I'm not talking about being religious.
- 40:30If you have never by faith said, I'm gonna trust
- 40:34in the objective facts of what Christ did in
- 40:38my place, then right now in your seat, the greatest
- 40:42thing you could do is cry out to God. Whether
- 40:46you feel or not feel is to say, your sin separates
- 40:50you from God for all eternity. And God's word
- 40:54says, his desire is that not one person would
- 40:57perish. And so he's offered you a free gift.
- 41:00And so you, by faith, say, I'm going to trust
- 41:04in Christ. I want to be united to him. Will you
- 41:08please forgive me right now? I'm sorry for my
- 41:11sin. I turned from it. It's called repentance.
- 41:15And I want to receive right now eternal life.
- 41:17You can pray that in your seat right now at this
- 41:20moment, and God will hear. Jesus came to give
- 41:24you that today. Fact number one. His death and
- 41:29resurrection is the key. Life change always begins
- 41:31with the truth. Fact number two, you become a
- 41:34co -partaker when you receive Christ personally.
- 41:38Principle number two is life change demands that
- 41:41we act on the truth. Remember when the conquering
- 41:45victor, general, or king, when he was declaring
- 41:49his victory, remember there's the military, he
- 41:52humiliates his foes, but remember what's in the
- 41:54back of the spoils? He gave gifts to everybody.
- 41:58He gave gifts of what was conquered. So every
- 42:01time people got a gift, they were reminded what?
- 42:04The love of their king and the victory that they
- 42:06shared in. Fact number three, every believer
- 42:09is given a spiritual gift, a supernatural enabling
- 42:13at the moment of salvation for two reasons. Every
- 42:17believer. What does it mean? He gave gifts to
- 42:21men. Reason number one, to remind us that life
- 42:24change occurs on the basis of grace. not self
- 42:27-effort. When that lady's milking that cow, when
- 42:31that other lady sees the bracelet, when the blacksmith,
- 42:34when he came through town, he said, hey, wow,
- 42:36here, you can have a donkey and two camels. When
- 42:39he's taking care of those animals, he's reminded,
- 42:41my king won a great victory. The evidence and
- 42:46reminder that I was given this gift is my king's
- 42:51work for me. And that's the imagery. Can you
- 42:55imagine what would happen if every time you used
- 42:57your spiritual gift, if you really discovered
- 42:59what it was, and you realized you have this supernatural,
- 43:02sacred endowment that you use to get to love
- 43:06people in a supernatural way, that it would remind
- 43:09you it's a gift. Your salvation is a gift. The
- 43:14second reason is to be empowered as other -centered
- 43:17agents of grace who supply what others need to
- 43:21be transformed into the likeness of Christ. Remember,
- 43:25if life change happens in community, sort of
- 43:27in that spiritual cocoon, well, I was pretty
- 43:31honest with you. This last week, I wasn't humble
- 43:34and gentle and patient and bearing with and making
- 43:36every effort all the time. I had a lot of the
- 43:39right side. And you know what I need? To learn
- 43:43to be humble, I need people that put me first.
- 43:45I need people that'll be patient with me. I need
- 43:48people that won't be critical and judgmental,
- 43:50that will be grace -filled and loving and kind.
- 43:52Because you know what happens? Whoever you're
- 43:54around, you become like. And when the Jesus inside
- 43:57of you and the Jesus inside of me, as we do life
- 44:01together from the heart honestly, the Spirit
- 44:03of God will take your gifts and meet my needs
- 44:06and my gifts to meet your needs. And so you'll
- 44:09have wisdom and I'll make a great decision to
- 44:10experience God. Or I'll really blow it and I'll
- 44:13feel ashamed and down on myself and beat myself
- 44:15up and the enemy will say, see Ingram, you're
- 44:17a lousy, stinking, and you'll have the gift of
- 44:19mercy and you'll say, no, no, no, no, no, Chip.
- 44:22That's your experience. That's who you are. God
- 44:24loves you. The world's not over. And so it gives
- 44:28us power as we use our gifts with one another.
- 44:32The principle is life change is both a gift and
- 44:36a responsibility. It's a gift. You're listening
- 44:42to Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram. and a

- 46:17Find it wherever you listen. Well, now here's
- 46:20Chip. For the last two days, we've been talking
- 46:22about how to experience Christ's resurrection
- 46:25power in our lives. There's three transformational
- 46:28principles we've dealt with. Number one, life
- 46:30change always begins with the truth. Number two,
- 46:34life change demands that we act on the truth.
- 46:37And number three, life change is both a gift
- 46:40and a responsibility. Today, as I begin to apply
- 46:43that, I talked about the evidence of walking
- 46:45by faith and God having the first portion of
- 46:48our money and the first portion of our time.
- 46:50And then I talked about that very sensitive area
- 46:53of forgiveness. And I want to camp there. I want
- 46:56to stop there. I sense that maybe many of you
- 46:59listening to my voice have an issue with forgiveness.
- 47:02I can't imagine how many people with ex -mates,
- 47:05bad bosses, rebellious kids, abusive parents,
- 47:09have unforgiveness in your heart and your life
- 47:12that is quenching the power of God. The application
- 47:16today is release them. Forgive them. It's not
- 47:19a feeling. It's a choice. It's a decision. And
- 47:22I want to call you before God right now to act
- 47:25on the truth that you know. They don't deserve
- 47:28it. They have hurt you. But you release them,
- 47:31you entrust them to God's justice, and you make
- 47:34a commitment that you will not bring up in your
- 47:35mind negative, destructive thoughts, or you will
- 47:39not say negative, destructive things about them.
- 47:41You let it go. You forgive. And then I want to
- 47:45encourage you that to seal that deal, begin today
- 47:48praying for them, asking God to encourage them
- 47:51and help them, and literally even bless them.
- 47:54Remember those words of Jesus, bless those who
- 47:57persecute you. Who do you need to forgive? Do
- 48:01it today. That's the end of today's program.
- 48:04Join us next time as we continue our series,
- 48:07Free at Last, How to Break Out of a Destructive
- 48:09Lifestyle. That's next time with Chip Ingram
- 48:12on Living on the Edge. Today's program is produced
- 48:18and sponsored by Living on the Edge.
