Life in the Show Barn: Raider McPhaul & Quentin Cox Talk Sheep, Goats, Girls & Growing Up in Ag · Drench Line Podcast

• Episode 7 - Sony === Wide Shot: [00:00:00] You gotta introduce us this time. okay, this is gonna be episode seven, maybe 7.1. We're not 100% sure. Yeah, we're kinda winging this one a little bit. So we're still in Lajitas, uh, outside of Terlingua, here at the beautiful Lajitas Golf and Resort. Came down here to kinda share some, uh, enjoyable times and hopefully get some content and record, play a little golf. We're not gonna talk hopefully about who won and who lost, but, um- Definitely not. Yeah, thank- thankfully. And if, full disclosure, as we get started, if these two boys that we're interviewing speak anything about winning, unfollow us. And Logan's on his second Badlands Margarita today. True story. So this could go sideways real fast. True story. So let- let's introduce these two fine young gentlemen here. Who do we have with us? So we decided that we wanted to get some content from some kids that are living it real world. Real world. We're gonna be raw and real, right? Raw and real, [00:01:00] 100%. That's why, that's why we're drinking Badlands Margaritas. I'm still on the unsweet tea. Sam is still in the no fun zone, and that is unsweet tea for you guys that don't know. He doesn't even, he doesn't even venture over into sweet tea. Okay- I did have a sip of that margarita. It was good. So we wanted to get some content from some, uh, individuals that were in the mix of it. Um, we're gonna start off, and we got a couple of boys that obviously we're, we're very close to, and we're, you know, convenient because they were... We found them in the rough on hole seven, you know, chasing their ball. But we wanna get some content from these guys, and, uh, we're gonna get some content from some younger kids as we kinda work through this evening. But we put together a list of questions, little bit of a vari- variety pack, and, uh, we're gonna kind of put them on the spot. They do not have a list. They have no idea what we're asking them. So if you're listening and you might potentially have had a crush on them, you might get your heart [00:02:00] broken. The one by Logan's taken. He is taken, full disclosure again. Okay, so we've got Raider McPhaul, Big Lake, Texas. We've got Quinten Cox, uh, Fredericksburg peach farmer of the year- ... down there in the Hill Country. We're gonna ask them a series of questions. We're gonna put them on the spot. Prom king. Prom king. Peach... Dude- ... he dated the peach queen for a little while. He did? Oh, yeah. Nice. That, that, that's a whole episode in itself. Um, but yeah, these guys have no idea what's going on, so we're... Hey, they're nervous too. They're so nervous. Sweating. They're sweating. I mean, it's, it's gonna be tough, but we're gonna put them on the spot. We're gonna ask them some questions. Some of them are gonna be real world. Uh, some of them maybe not so much. Okay. Do it You got a list of them? I do not have a list of them. You don't have a list of the questions? No. Where are the list of questions? This is what hap- um, see, this is what happens when he constantly- He didn't send it to me ... he constantly drinks sweet tea [00:03:00] on sweet tea. We start that Boys: Full disclosure, the only reason why we are on, in the rough on number seven is we are looking for their balls. Me and Quinton were- Wide Shot: No, no ... Boys: in the fairway all day. Wide Shot: No. No. No. We seen y'all coming out of the hills and y'all just- Walking ... come back to, to the fairway and then hit, and then y'all are like, "Oh, that's birdie." Birdie putt. Really? How many times today, I hope this is all still getting recorded. It is. How many times today did we hear these boys after... And it says a lot if me and you beat them to the green, and then all of a sudden they stroll up, like 95 seconds later, and they're like, "What are y'all at? And oh, we got a par putt here. Oh, well that's our, you know, we're, we're, we're shooting for bird." Yeah. Dude. Happened all the time. No. okay, so as we put it together our questions, again, like I said, these guys have no idea what's coming. Um, they don't know if we're gonna ask them about their love life. They don't know if we're gonna ask them about their treadmill regiment. They have no [00:04:00] idea. So I'm gonna start off. I'm gonna hit, I'm gonna hit Raider McPhaul first, and I wanna know what your future plans are within the ag industry. Boys: Uh, my future plans are to go to Texas Tech for agricultural business. Uh, I want to take over my sheep business, raise the best fine wools and crosses in the country, and I wanna learn more about, uh, feed producement and minerals, and I can get a job for DuraFerm. Wide Shot: We can probably hook you up with that. He had so many plugs there. Alan, again, if you're listening, please feel free to reach out to Katie. She handles all of our sponsorship. All right. Sam, you got the list of, uh, questions? I got it. Okay. I got one for, uh, Q-Dog here. how did you learn to show? Boys: I remember when I was in second grade, don't remember how old I was, I learned how to show a market goat. Not very good at it. I've gone a long way. Um, Brad Rader taught me how to show a market goat and got me one. And I don't know what place I got, but [00:05:00] that's where I first learned how to show. Wide Shot: Very good, very good. Uh, yeah, Quentin there, um, local hill country guy, giving a shout-out to Brad Rader. Um, I, I would like to, I would like to emphasize a few points on that. First of all, I've seen the picture of him showing the market goat, and I would, I would venture to say that Brad would agree, he didn't learn how to show that year. The goat showed him. The goat showed him. Second of all, Quentin's going into his senior year of high school, for those of you, you know, listeners that don't know Quentin. Um, we're still fighting, you know, whether he knows how to show or doesn't know how to show. Yeah. Um, but he ha- He did say one thing. He has come a long ways. He tries really hard. I, I hope that I can find that picture of him showing that goat, because I'm gonna send it to Katie, and during this episode, it will get posted on the World Wide Web. Rader, got one for you. What's the worst part of showing sheep and goats? Boys: Real talk The worst part about showing sheep and goats [00:06:00] is showing up to a show and when I'm in the drench line - see what I did there? When I'm in the drench line and Logan and Sam have been waiting 45 minutes 'cause I'm late, and my sheep does not set up correctly- Mm and I get yelled at in front of every single person and their mother in the barn, that is one of the most embarrassing moments. And you would think after 10 years of showing livestock I would learn to show up on time, and it's just something that I've struggled with. But senior year's coming up and we're gonna fix that. Wide Shot: It's important to, uh... What do they say the first step is? Acceptance? Yeah. Yeah. Ac- acceptance, admittance. Admittance. Yeah. Um- He's definitely late. So- He's definitely, uh- Radar, you're not alone in that aspect. When I get up on the tee box in front of everybody and duff one off to the side- Oh ... same Same feeling I agree. Yeah. [00:07:00] Yep, that is definitely, uh, high pressure situations. Okay. Um, all right. I'll hit Quentin. Woo, this could be good Would you rather track or treadmill your sheep or goats since you indicated earlier that you were a previous goat showman? Boys: tracking. S- 1% of the time they'll hurt themselves and they have a problem right there Wide Shot: You indicated that you like the treadmill. Is the reason that you like to treadmill your sheep so that you can text your lady friends on the phone? Boys: Negative. Wide Shot: I, I feel like there's a story behind this. Oh, there is. We'll get to that in a minute. Okay. Don't worry. I'm taking it easy on him. Okay. Okay. Quinn would rather treadmill. Interesting take. Yeah. Uh, Raider, got one for you. What is your favorite show, and what is your favorite sale? Boys: Uh, my [00:08:00] favorite stock show is the Houston Livestock Show. It's the biggest in the world. Uh, it's where everyone goes. The green shavings, all the pressure's on. It's, it's really a once in a lifetime experience and we're lucky that we get to do it. Uh, my favorite sale is also probably the Houston Sale. I like to, uh, see everyone go through for the really high, high bid numbers, and it's really cool that the winners get to talk on the microphone in front of all the people bidding on your sheep Wide Shot: Good take. I like it. I like it. I can get behind, I can get behind all that. 100%. Hey, Green Shavings in Houston with like all the big bright lights, like yeah, there's noth- there's nothing... And, uh, you know, I think we can probably actually talk a little bit about that Raider said his, you know, favorite sale was Houston also. A- and, and we see this every year on, you know, social media posts, so and so's lamb, grand lamb this year brings a million dollars, kid only gets X amount, [00:09:00] whatever. 40,000. Yeah. Houston Livestock Show gives a tremendous amount of money back in scholarships that ag kids and those affiliated are gonna have a huge opportunity to hopefully capture. So yeah, shout out to those guys. Uh- Yeah. For sure. Shout out to Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Yeah. Yeah. And I think they sent checks out this week. Yeah, that's great. We need it. You guys wanna get on podcast? Like podcast. Okay, so, um- Listen to it. It's called The Drench Line. All right. So as we kinda work through this and we kinda continue and, um, and and interview these two, I feel like it's been a little, been a little easy on 'em. Yeah. How, how do we make it harder? Crank up the fire on that dancing chicken. So at this point are we, are we... Quentin, this is for you. Are we going to the shows at this point to try to succeed and, and do really well at them, or are we just kinda like coasting through and checking out the chicks while we're there? Boys: Boom. That's a good question. That's a good question. [00:10:00] Gotta do both First off, you wanna win. I hate losing. Absolutely hate it. We found that out today. Mm. I don't know why they're talking that much because me and Rader beat them by, what was it, 15 shots? No, we beat y'all. 15 shots. No, I, I was just, I was just referring to you having to pay up your bets over there. Yeah, so I don't wanna hear it from, I don't wanna hear it from Sam and Logan. But, uh, nah, I always wanna win. I hate losing Wide Shot: so we've talked through favorite show, favorite cell, track, treadmill, you know, kinda some of the basic parts. Put Quinton on the spot a little bit, whether he was chasing chicks or chasing banners, kinda o- one of, one of the two things. This one actually, this one hit, this one hits close to home. All right, let's do- Pretty serious ... the, I mean, the mosquitoes are just relentless right now. Sam's still worried about, Sam's still worried about the mosquitoes. I've got one that I think, again, like I said, it hits close to home, and I think it's one of the most important things that you can probably really sit back and f- and as your morning starts on show day, what is the hair [00:11:00] product that you use on show day? We're gonna get it from both of them. Oh my gosh. We're gonna get it from both of them. Are we talking about in the sheep or in their actual hair? In their actual hair. Oh, I don't... I can't. I'm not that- This doesn't... No, that's why I said, I didn't, I didn't start this off and I say, "Sam, I want you to be a part of this conversation." Like, I want two boys that got, you know- You can ask, what, what do I put in my hair on show day flowing locks. We already that. Boys: First off, I use sometimes salt, sea salt spray. Sea salt spray, then I use texture powder. Get my hair ri- hair right on point. But this guy, Logan, over here, he does his, like, hairspray and then, like, uh, I don't know what, but it takes him a minute to get ready. I'm, I'm- Contact cement. Yeah, like, it takes him a minute. You know, like, if he doesn't have his hairspray- it's, it's a rough day. It's a rough day. So kinda with the hair stuff, well, you know, whenever you wake up and you have luscious hair, kinda like I do, it's, it's not really a worry on your mind. Like, [00:12:00] Logan, you know, on the golf course, he's always worried about, you know, how the hair looks at a stock show, no hat with just hair out. I, I'm chasing bigger and better stuff, so I just let my hair do the talking, you know, and just don't even, don't even fix it. You just gotta let it breathe. Wide Shot: You let it breathe? I can tell you guys, for those of you that are listening, and if you are chasing a sophisticated look, you don't let it breathe. Oh my- That is not- Yeah, I am like- That is- I, I'm getting slaughtered over here Sam is slapping himself in the face at the moment- Slaughtered because he is getting murdered by- For, for you viewers- Yeah ... I just want you to know- If you're not watching this on YouTube and you're actually just listening- The, the mosquitoes in Lajitas, Texas are, are as big as pterodactyls. Sam is getting attacked. Huge. Massive. Like, they look like a buzzard. I think I can probably answer this next question. I'm gonna give it to Rader. I think it's probably self, pretty self-explanatory. would you rather... I guess this is gonna become a little bit of a game of would you rather. Would you rather hand walk down the road [00:13:00] or put your sheep on a walker? Boys: I would rather, hmm. I would rather walk my sheep to the end of the road by hand because you're getting more, you're more with the sheep, you know? You're not, you're not using a walker when you're in the ring. Your hand's on the sheep in the ring at all times, and if not, then your sheep's probably running around, and that's not a good thing. So yeah, I'd like to walk my hand, walk by hand as much as I possibly can, and I think that gets the most benefit out of it. Wide Shot: I like it. I like it. More big hand walking down the road. Little more, little more interaction- Yeah ... with the sheep. Yeah, yeah. You, you and him- like a bonding ... yeah, you and him becoming compatible. I like it. Yeah. Um, Sam, you got one? Far away. Uh... Off the cuff right now, what's the first thing that comes to your mind? What do you wanna ask one of these two boys? I, I, the first thing that comes to my mind, I really can't ask these boys on camera. We gotta be raw and real. Raw and real? Okay. Um, all right. [00:14:00] Education, Tech or A&M, and why? Boys: went my name being Raider, I'm obviously a Texas Tech fan, and I was in College Station three or four days ago, and I actually think that might have been the most miserable time of my life. Um, like Sam says, they're a bunch of people that are like sheep with their head stuck in a fence. No, no, Raider, back up. Back, back up. You're definitely right. I'm not even saying anything. For, for clarification to the audience, I said, "Hey, when you're down there, just be sure to ask them where all the sheep are at that have their heads stuck in the fence." Wide Shot: All right. So we've asked a couple of questions here. I have no idea if they're gonna get used. Um, I'm not 100% sure that if we do use them, either one of these boys could potentially ever run for, you know, governor or- Public office ... public office or- Not happening ... hey, the mayor of Lajitas, and the mayor of Lajitas Is a GOAT I guarantee you that- He would [00:15:00] get more votes ... he would get more votes. So- What is your favorite Yeah, yeah. So we're, um, Katie's over here chiming in. You know, she's, she's obviously- Keeping us on track ... on the Badlands Margaritas also, and she has offered a c- couple of tidbits, and I think as we do, we can probably just, you know, get both on the mic and just kind of see what's up. Yeah. Um, two-part question. Let's do this. What's your favorite supplement that you've got in your barn, outside of, you know, basic show feeds? Like, what's one thing that you're like, "Hey, if I've got to just, you know, pull everything else out, I wanna keep that one"? Feel good about it, feel confident in how it works. Uh, this is not a plug. Um, as of right now, I would say that none of those companies- No ... have stepped up to the plate. So we're, we're gonna give this a two-part question. One, what supplement, okay? Which one can you go without, or which one can you not go without? Second part of the question, and you can't say any of the guys judging Texas Majors this year so that you feel like you got an advantage. Well, hey, coach- Who is your favorite- That was, that was covered- ... judge- ... just walk to the camera ... to [00:16:00] show to, okay? Two-part question. Favorite supplement, can't live without it. Favorite judge. Who's your favorite judge to show to, but we're not allowing you to say X dude that's judging X show so that you can get a extra- Boys: to answer part one of the question, uh, my favorite supplement and the one that I think we've seen the most benefits out of is Grow 'N Shine for, uh, leg wool, and I, I think that is the best way to get fuzziness on your sheep and goats. I've been using it for the past couple years, and the sheep and goats that I've been successful with have been really hairy and wooly animals, and I think that has helped out a lot with my success. Yeah, I'll answer that part one, too. I think ShowRite Star Shine. I think every sheep that I've fed has had ShowRite Star Shine in it since it was five months old to show day. I think it just works Okay. Wide Shot: Favorite judge to [00:17:00] show to Boys: Uh, my favorite judge that I've ever shown to is Miles Gibbs. Uh, no particular r- reason. Uh, he's very good on the microphone. He gives every kid a chance. Uh, his reasons are never dull. He never makes you just wanna leave the ring. Mm-hmm. You always wanna sit up there and listen to what he has to say, 'cause you never know what he's gonna say. And yeah. Take it away, Quentin. I think my favorite judge to show to is, uh- Steve Sturtz, because he's just, the foundations like muscle, stoutness, squareness. Those are what he like. That's what he likes. Wide Shot: And that's kinda what you like too? Yeah. I guess that- Yeah ... that's fair. That's fair. Okay. Quentin, is that how you also select who you would like to maybe Snapchat? No. Muscle, stoutness, and squareness? [00:18:00] Okay. All right. No, just curious. Hey, I mean, we gotta, we gotta, like this is raw and real. We gotta talk about stuff like that. We gotta ask these questions. You know, I feel like that's one of those like comments that, you know, like whenever you're watching a Home Al- like, no, d- uh, Tim Allen, Home Improvement. Home Improvement. Yeah. Yeah. Like when you were watching that, you know, and, and as they get on there, and then all of a sudden, you know- Great show ... the, the people say like, "Applause, applause." Yeah. Everybody claps. I think some of these questions we're asking these boys, the moms on the other side aren't, aren't just loving it. Yeah. We're not getting the applauses. Okay, so both of them answered the products they couldn't live without. Both of them answered, you know, who a couple of their favorite judges are. I like it. I, I, I don't have no problem with that. We talked about Miles this morning. Rader made the comment, you know, uh, none of his reasons are ever dull and boring. Very Miles Gibbs, very Miles Gibbs things. Yeah. Yeah. He's entertaining. Yeah. I get it ... those, those, those was good to come from, uh, we had a little conversation about Miles this morning and Clinto Brown. Okay, last one, and then we'll kinda wrap this deal up. You got, you got a question for the boys, or you want me to, you want me [00:19:00] to finish it up? You go ahead. Finish it up. Okay. So we've asked them, uh, we've asked them about tracking and treadmilling. We've got a little insight into their love lives. Um, future plans. Wait, wait, wait. Now back up. Oh. We really didn't go down that path on the love life. How is the love life going right now? Like w- are we- Ask this guy. The love life is amazing. Uh, Jintsy, if you're watching, I don't know if you're watching this, thank you for taking care of the sheep and goats. Uh, me and Sam, on the way up here- Oh, yeah ... this was Sam's idea, by the way. no We talked about how you were gonna, we were gonna get you some work boots and a washing suit for the next time I'm gone, but very inappropriate of Sam. Uh, I- ... thank you. You don't condone it. I do not. That is, I'd never say anything- ... kinda like that. Um- Boy, who does that sound like? Somebody I used to know. But let's hear about Quentin's love life, 'cause I'd love- Oh, no. You're derailing this real quick ... well, I've already said that my love life's amazing. I wanna hear about [00:20:00] his. Okay Yeah, at the moment I don't have one, and they're all- All of these people out there, all these comments are throwing bullets right at me, and- So just gotta pull it- I don't know, I don't know if we would call it a bullet. I just think we're, yeah, we're curious. We're, we're, we're questioning. You know, we wanna make sure that, you know, you're on the right path. You know, a kid that's going to, you know, tech in the future and got, got his, you know, got plans. Like, and I know, again, not all of them can be the peach queen, so every now and then we've gotta reach outside of the box, you know, and, you know, maybe, maybe see what's there. Maybe look for the apple queen. Apple queen. Ooh. Apple queen, Sam says. Boys: Yeah, I don't know what peach queen they are talking about because I never was with peach queen, so... We got these mosquitoes. Yeah, so bad. Yeah. I don't know what Wide Shot: Yeah, so, so Quinton's, Quinton is deferring all, um, you know, questions, concerns, thoughts, advice. Ladies, uh, if, if you're single and willing to mingle, Q-Dog [00:21:00] over here- He's, he is, he is free ... hit him up on, uh, uh- All socials ... so- yeah, what is... Snapchat. The Gram. Do you have a TikTok? the Gram. the Gram. a Gram. TikTok. Quinton is on the Gram. TikTok. I'm on TikTok. I'm a TikToker. TikTok, TikTok. Big TikToker. He's a huge TikToker. That's why we can't get, you know, our sheep to jump on the stand sometimes. So you want me to ask the last question? Yeah, I, I... Absolutely. Okay. And, uh- I probably have something pop up. Huh? What? Let us ask a question. Oh. Each of y'all. Hey, we're gonna- Oh, just spun it on us. I think that's pretty good. Rader threw the curve ball. Big curve ball. We were supposed to be interviewing these guys. They actually just asked if they could ask us the question. Yeah. Hmm. So we're gonna let them ask us. Hey, like we said, raw and real. Nothing to hide. Now, just remember, we're OGs, so. We are. We are. And also remember that, um, we are probably paying for your green fees tomorrow Boys: Uh, this is not gonna be an embarrassing question. I don't know why [00:22:00] they think of that of me, but, uh, this is a question for both of them. What has been your highlight in the stock show world? Like, it could be something that you did when you were a kid that has been your all-time high, or something that your kid did, or something that maybe your kid didn't do that just sticks out. Explain, Logan. Wide Shot: Okay, I got it. Um, yeah, again, you know, we talked about it like there is no, uh, this is not a scripted... I think we talked about it on the last episode. This is not a scripted podcast. This is live, right here, interacting, mingling, talking about the things that initially pop in your head. So, Raider asks what, what's been the highlight? Um, I was thinking about this a little bit earlier, just how long, because we made the comment and we talked about Miles Gibbs, and I guess it kind of made me kind of go a little bit down memory lane. Um, earlier whenever we did, whenever we [00:23:00] shot a podcast, you know, this morning, you know, episodes six or seven or whatever it was, but I was thinking about how long we've been involved in this and, you know, the people that you meet and the interactions you meet, and that come and go. You know, if we're talking about that, like, you know, guys that are breeding, guys that are successful, families that are showing. You know, just all the different things that go through it. And, um, as me and Sam were sitting here waiting for the boys to get down, uh, I asked him if he had ever been to Prater's. And y- again, you know, we're kind of talking about the Smiles Gibbs deal, but, you know, rode the bucking bull, and I thought, "Well, I'm... I don't feel like I'm, like, an old person in this," but that does make you feel like, "Holy crap, I've been, for 30 years, involved in this industry," and all the things that it has entailed. But- I guess that all brings it, you know, wraps that back around to the point that before I was in a, you know, current occupation that we are, where we're trying to raise sheep, you know, on a full-time basis, I was a county agent. And, um, and this is, this is, you [00:24:00] know, probably not gonna seem that much of a weird thing for a lot of families that have been close to us for the, for the last 10 or 15 years. But we had a family that we helped, and, um, dad didn't show, mom didn't show. Maybe dad showed some pigs at some point. Um, but that family started out showing three... two or three sheep, you know, maybe making the sale, um, you know, in, at their county fair in some capacity or whatever, uh, those first couple years. And then whenever I was a county agent, they wanted to kind of be, you know, fairly successful and wanted to kind of push, you know, and, and, and try to see what, you know, the kids could do. Kids bought in. Kids were, you know, involved in it, and, um, that family, before it was all said and done, um, put a pile of Houston H trophies on the mantle and a tremendous amount of big, big show banners. And not to [00:25:00] say that that was necessarily, you know, all my doing or whatever. I think that just kind of goes to show that you don't have to be... I saw this the other day, like, you know, you have to be a breeder's kid. You have to be, you know, somebody that's influential in this deal or whatever. And, um, that was a family that started off in a 4H and FFA program and decided that they wanted to be successful, and they got after it and went after it, and kids did it. And they were f- they were fully invested, and they bought into it. And, um, we were kind of a little bit along for the ride or whatever. But yeah, I'd say, you know, for as much success as we have been fortunate to have as a family, that was a, that was a cool situation to be a part of for the last, you know, 10 or 12 years or whatever, just because they were not a family that was in the thralls of it or grew up in it or really knew anything whenever we started. So, yeah. Yeah Me? You want me to answer that too? Yeah, I want you to answer that question. [00:26:00] God dang. So y- you know, we always try to crack jokes and be raw and real, so I, I'll, I'll try to answer this question and, uh, not, not be too, uh, sappy or emotional about it, 'cause that's not me. Um, you know, up until last year, I would say the highlight of, of my stock show life was, uh, seeing Shep win Houston. Um, y- you know, that was neat since I won it and he did it, and there's very few in, in, in the history of it that have done that, a, a dad and son deal. And maybe, maybe my daughter can win it one day, and the whole family deal. But, um, you know, I'd have to say watching you be reserve at Houston this year after what happened and, and what we'd all went through, all of us sitting at this table went through, um, was probably the highlight of that. Because I had gave my word to your father that I was gonna get something done, [00:27:00] and to get that done was, was a highlight to me. Um, but not just from that aspect. I think it was behind the scenes, the people that don't see... You know, all, all people see is advertisements and this and that. But behind the scenes, what was really cool to me was to see how many people came together to help and get that sheep ready that had nothing to do Logan was there on his knees fitting legs. I was there. Uh, Cooper Newcomb was there. Matt Kennedy was there. Um, people that had nothing to do with the purchasing of that animal, the buying of that animal. Um, there, there was no, "I'm on this team, you're on that team" deal. It was, um, good-hearted folks that came together to, "All right. We got a sh- we got a shot at this deal, and we're gonna go in and make this deal work, and, and we're gonna get in here and work." And there, and there [00:28:00] was no, there was no bad blood. There was no, "Hey, this is my sheep. Get away," that kind of deal. Um, so that was a highlight to me, just to see different walks of people come together to get that done, so. Boys: All right, I got a question for these two right here. Two- Oh, my God ... two different types of questions. Two different types of questions. Wide Shot: Hopefully Quentin's gonna lighten it a little. Boys: What is your most embarrassing golf shot? Wide Shot: Oh. Most embarrassing golf shot. Okay. Hmm. Okay, so- This is a, is it, it is a two-part question, correct? Two-part question. Okay. Okay. This isn't recent, but this will always stick in my mind for... And for the audience that does not know, Rader McPhaul's grandad, Rick McPhaul, who is also my business partner in Mad Dog Sheep Company, can make you feel like the smallest person on earth without saying more than two words. I- am I, am I right about this? Correct. Concur. [00:29:00] So this was several, several years ago. We were playing at Big Lake, and I think for some reason me and him ended up on a team together. Um, hit a really good tee shot, hit a really good approach shot. Um, we're getting up there, getting ready to putt, and he's standing right beside me. And like it- all I gotta do is make this putt. I think, I think it was for like a birdie or something. Um- What were you... Wha- was this towards the end or was this like middle of the just- I don't remember- Okay ... when it was. But- Not, not, not super, super significant. It was cr- it was cr- Oh. It was crucial. Like, I, I- Cr- critical and crucial. Okay ... I mean, look, anytime you're playing golf with Rick McPhaul, everything's crucial. Oh, yeah. So y- you know- Probably said crucial, whatever. Um, he's standing beside me and I'm practicing my putt, what I'm gonna putt, and I accidentally hit the ball. Oh, Lord. Oh, no. Oh, no. Yeah, it was, it was- We've got six-year-olds in the audience that just- Totally embarrassing screamed. And Rick looks right at [00:30:00] me and just says, "Pick it up. You're done." Where, where... When you say you're done, where did you go? I just went back to the cart and- Just back to the cart and said, "Okay, I didn't know-" Didn't say a word the rest of the time we were there. Yeah. You entered like the super no-fun zone. Yeah. Like, I mean, that was a deal of like- That was totally embarrassing. Yeah. Practice putt, gave it the old taparoo Gave it the old tap. Uh-oh. Quentin, you got another one? Yeah, what's... Answer it, too. Oh, okay. Most embarrassing golf shot. Um, I don't know. I, I haven't been a part of a situation like that that probably really sent me into that sort of a conundrum. That, that bad tee shot in front of your wife today- No, it's- ... that would've been embarrassing for me ... no, so, so that's what I was saying, like I'm, I'm glad you brought that up. But then all she cared about, she just said, "I hope his butt looked good in those shorts." And what I mean, I'm glad you brought that up. I mean, I'm gonna throw this mic at you shortly. Um, but whenever me and JB, and I joke with everybody 'cause every- you know, [00:31:00] and, and when I say I joke, like it's not really a joke. People are always like, "Oh, did JB go play golf with you today?" I'm like, "No, I haven't taken her since Riverside," a golf course outside of San Angelo, um, yeah, kind of there, over there on the north side, probably since it would've been maybe the summer of like 2007. And we play a fair amount of golf in our house, and she has not been on a golf course with me since 2007, 2008, whenever that was. It was pre-marriage, um, until probably today. And the reason is I had started off pretty solid, probably played two or three holes. She's, you know, she's not a golfer, so she's riding along, you know, probably having, you know, a beverage of some sort. Everybody's happy. Life's good. We're in this, we're in the bliss stage. Think she's fixing to marry the most athletic man on earth. Absolutely. Like, I'm- Yeah ... yeah, I did good here. Oh, yeah, yeah. Like she's never seen me do a- Tall, flowing hair ... she's never seen me do- [00:32:00] Handsome, athletic ... an athletic move that wasn't quite honestly superior. Yeah. I tee off, and whatever hole this was on, I drive it down there. Easy tiger. And I am way, I am way, way there on the left side. Pulls up behind. I grab my fairway wood, uh, rescue hybrid, whatever it was, and, um, I think, well, if I could just bend this thing around this tree just a little bit, like that'll be fine. No big deal. I hit it, hit it flush, sounded good. Pure. You know, pure. Yeah, all these things these boys say in today's world. It hit so pure and flush dead center of this tree that it bounced back and it hit the cart that she was in So all this sounds, you know, fun, right? Like, it's happened to the best of us. Um, to, you know, the man, Tiger. She laughed, and she laughed hysterically. This wasn't like a giggle and then put her hand over her [00:33:00] mouth. She started giggling and laughing. And I kid you not, and this is a true story for those of you guys that know and would like to fact-check this since some of you guys are, are into that. I drove her back to the clubhouse at Riverside Golf Course. I told her to get out of the cart, and I continued playing that round by myself. That is a true story. That would have to be most embarrassing golf shot of someone that, uh, yeah, obviously ended up in the thralls with. Boys: All right, here's part two. He's got another part. Another part. This guy's like, he's re- he's resilient. Okay. What is an equal placing to a triple bogey on a golf course? You mean like equal placing in a stock show? Equal, yep. What would equivalate to that? Wide Shot: A triple bogey would equivalate to a placing in a stock show. Triple bogey on a par five, like we're talking a snowman. On a par five? Or are we talking like a par- Just like, just like any, any par. I'm gonna say- Let's say, let's say, let's say a par five [00:34:00] triple bogey. That'd be an eight, correct? Yep. Okay. Triple bogey on a par five. Hey, so it's tough. You gotta think about it like that. So the... I think the reason he asked this question is 'cause today we were, like, when we were making good putts or chips or whatever, they were asking, "What would you equivalate that to? Like champion down at Houston?" Mm-hmm. Or would you- That's exactly what they were asking ... equivalate that to like grand or- No, that's fine. That's fine ... and I'm like, "Oh, I'm in it." You know, par putt for me is like champion down, a birdie would be like grand. Winning Houston? Yeah, yeah. That's kind of what I'm thinking. Yeah. Radio silence. Some of their shots were equivalent to missing your class. Which, no shots fired, but just pointing that out. First of all, missing your class, that's like duffing it off the tee box, and we didn't have any. No duffs today. No duffs, yeah. Yeah, not today. I, I didn't... No, there was no... There was no... I didn't have any duffs. 10. Might've been a duff. 10 was bad. Okay, yeah. I just ate a hot dog. [00:35:00] That'll do it to you. All right, so- $30 hot dog ... $30 hotdog. So what is it? What is, uh, what is a, what is a snowman on a par five? A tough par five, though. Let's be real. Like the one we played here? Yeah, absolutely. Uh- Toughest par fives ever yeah, I would, um, I'd have to say 12th in class, um, 'cause that's what we placed at Austin this year. The Really Good Sheep, 12th. 12th in class at a major show. Uh, well, okay- Austin ... so, at Austin, yeah. But 12th in class with one that you felt good about. Like, you know, you're walking up to the ring like, yeah, you kind of, you give it the extra spray. Yeah, I had- You feel good about it ... I had the stick. Yeah. I had the lie, I had the distance, I had it all. You s- And it was like whiff ... hey, it's like one, that deal I always see it on Facebook. And you know, Facebook listens to you, if you don't know. It be listening. But it, it's weird how often this comes up and it's like, you know, your cart says it's out. Yes. You shoot it with your, you know, your- Rangefinder ... rangefinder [00:36:00] and it says you're 133 to the pin. And then so you, you, you, you gauge it and you look at it and you think, "Ah, it's probably more 138." And then you skull it 35 yards across the green. Yeah. Yeah. That happens quite a bit. Yeah. So what is it to you? What, what, what, what's a placing ... What would you say? Snowman, par five. So I'm gonna equate it like this, I'm gonna break it down. A par five, a tough par five, so that's gotta be a major show, right? Tough par five, you roll into class, you're feeling it. It's like a one handicap, right? Yeah, number one handicap. Yeah, yeah. Number one handicap. Okay. Houston. So it's Houston, maybe San Anton. San Anton can be a knife fight. Those bye classes, like- Tough. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not gonna ... So I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna roll in. Au- Austin's probably more of, you know, a, a par four with some water. I'm gonna say San Anton, you roll in, you thinking you're You know, you leave there and you got the one to win. Okay. And you're- fifth in class. It's a tough class. [00:37:00] Like, it's a good class, but you're still fifth. Yeah. And, and you thought you had one to win. Yeah. Or maybe, maybe sixth, 'cause then you don't get talked at all. You don't even get talked. So you don't know why. That's fair. Yeah. I could see that. Yeah, so you don't even know why. They basically just said, "Sir, you go stand over there." Yeah. "Count the sheep when they walk in." Yeah. "Thank you for being a part of class. Thank you for your entry fee." Come again next year. Yep. Come again. Thank you. Come again. Um- Here's a T-shirt. So, hey, we've asked some important questions, we've asked some funny questions, we've kidded, you know, along the way. We wanted this one to be a, you know, maybe a little lighter. Just some, you know, interaction amongst, uh, obviously, kids that have been a part of, you know, both of our programs forever, uh, but also that know us very candidly. Um- And good kids. Good kids. Funny kids. Gonna be, uh, funny at times. Um, and we're gonna, we're gonna grab a couple of younger ones. We're gonna grab some girls, uh, that we're gonna interview here in the next little bit. You know, just kinda some interaction amongst customers, [00:38:00] kids, all the fun stuff. Um- So close it out? Yeah, so we're closing it out. So that's what I was getting at. Okay. Um, but yeah, so this was, uh, this was one that maybe was a little bit different. You probably didn't leave here, you know, making any notes in the notebook. Um, but that's okay. That's kinda what we want this still to be a part of, you know, or, you know, have some, um, interaction amongst, you know, people and customers and kids that have been a part of the programs of all the things that we've talked about for what, the last six or seven episodes. thank you for listening. Thank you Quentin and Raider for joining in with us and putting up with us. We really appreciate it. Uh, for our listeners out there, and viewers, don't forget to like, share, subscribe, follow us on all the social media platforms, and we'll see you next time. Absolutely. Thanks, guys.
