- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I hope you're ready for a fresh episode. Luna: Hey Lucas! I am so ready. And I've been practicing from last time — the colors. Rood, blauw, geel... still working on it. Lucas: That's great. Colors are a good foundation. But today, let's go somewhere we all go — a bakery. But this time, we're focusing on bread. Luna: Oh, bread! Yes, I love a good loaf. What's the first thing I need to say? Lucas: The basic phrase: Ik wil graag brood kopen. That means 'I would like to buy bread.' Let's hear it. Luna: Ik wil graag brood kopen. Lucas: Perfect. Ik wil graag brood kopen. Nice and clear. Luna: Ik wil graag brood kopen. So brood is bread. Got it. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if you want a specific type, like whole wheat, you can ask: Heeft u volkorenbrood? That means 'Do you have whole wheat bread?' Luna: Heeft u volkorenbrood? That's a mouthful! Volkorenbrood. Lucas: You said it well. Volkorenbrood is whole wheat bread. Let's practice that again: Heeft u volkorenbrood? Luna: Heeft u volkorenbrood? Lucas: Yes! And maybe you don't want a whole loaf. Maybe just half. So you can say: Mag ik een half brood? — 'May I have half a loaf?' Luna: Mag ik een half brood? That sounds very polite. Mag ik een half brood? Lucas: Exactly right. And then you'll want to ask the price: Wat kost dat? — 'How much does that cost?' Luna: Wat kost dat? Simple enough. Lucas: And when you're done, you can say: Dat is het. — 'That's it.' or 'That's all.' Luna: Dat is het. So I can use that to say I'm done ordering. Nice. Lucas: Exactly. Let's run through a little scene. Imagine you walk into a bakery. You say to the baker: Ik wil graag brood kopen. Luna: Ik wil graag brood kopen. Lucas: The baker asks: Heeft u volkorenbrood? You say: Ja, alstublieft. Then: Mag ik een half brood? Luna: Mag ik een half brood? Lucas: Then you ask: Wat kost dat? The baker says the price, and you say: Dat is het. Perfect. Luna: That feels so real. I can actually imagine doing that. Lucas: Good. Now let's do a quick recap. I'll say the English, you give the Dutch. 'I would like to buy bread.' Luna: Ik wil graag brood kopen. Lucas: 'Do you have whole wheat bread?' Luna: Heeft u volkorenbrood? Lucas: 'May I have half a loaf?' Luna: Mag ik een half brood? Lucas: 'How much does that cost?' Luna: Wat kost dat? Lucas: 'That's it.' Luna: Dat is het. Lucas: Excellent. You know, if this episode is helping you feel more confident in Dutch, that's exactly why we make these. And the way we keep them free and without ads is through listeners like you supporting the show. If today was actually useful to you, you can help us keep going at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Just a small gesture goes a long way. Luna: Yeah, absolutely. It's nice to have a way to say thanks, right? And we really appreciate it. Okay, back to bread. One more phrase: what if I want a different type, like white bread? Lucas: Good question. White bread is wit brood. So you can say: Heeft u wit brood? Luna: Heeft u wit brood? Easy. So I can swap volkorenbrood for wit brood. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want a whole loaf, say: Mag ik een heel brood? Luna: Mag ik een heel brood? That's useful too. So heel is whole. Lucas: Right. Let's put it together. Luna, you're at the bakery. Go ahead. Luna: Okay. Ik wil graag brood kopen. Heeft u volkorenbrood? Mag ik een half brood? Wat kost dat? Dat is het. Lucas: Perfect! You just ordered bread in Dutch. That's fantastic. Luna: Dank je wel! Oh, I said that right. Dank je wel. Lucas: Yes! And that's a great way to end. So practice these phrases, and next time you're in a Dutch bakery, you'll be all set. Luna: I think I need to go find a bakery now. Thanks, Lucas! See you next time. Lucas: Tot ziens, Luna. And thanks to you for listening. Keep practicing!
