- 0:00SPEAKER_10: Welcome to Topeka Bible Church.
- 0:03SPEAKER_10: Right now you're probably sitting in your seats thinking, where's Jim and who is this kid?
- 0:08SPEAKER_10: Well, today is a special Sunday.
- 0:10SPEAKER_10: This is Youth Sunday.
- 0:11SPEAKER_10: This is a Sunday where the youth ministry would get to leave the basement in the cab and come up and we get to help lead service and tell you about all the fun that we had this summer and this past year.
- 0:23SPEAKER_10: So you might have noticed we had students taking the offering this morning in the aisles and standing at the doors, greeting you as you came in, handing you your bulletins, uh, which is all really cool.
- 0:33SPEAKER_10: Um I'm Jacob.
- 0:35SPEAKER_10: I was one of the interns this summer, and this summer we talked about what it means to be hashtag blessed.
- 0:42SPEAKER_10: We talked about what it means to truly be blessed as opposed to what the world would have us believe uh it means to be blessed.
- 0:50SPEAKER_10: Uh through that, we went through the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew.
- 0:54SPEAKER_10: Each Sunday we took a different passage and we worked our way through all the way up until last week where we finished um the final part in that message.
- 1:04SPEAKER_10: Um alongside that, we went on a lot of trips.
- 1:07SPEAKER_10: We went to New York, we went to Sky Ranch, uh, we helped at Catapult, we went to Royals Games, we went to Chiefs Training Camp.
- 1:15SPEAKER_10: We just had a ton of fun this summer, and we're gonna watch a video right now, and it'll show you a little bit about what we did.
- 1:23SPEAKER_10: Good morning.
- 1:26SPEAKER_08: Well, I'm Shane, and I am an intern for the summer.
- 1:29SPEAKER_08: Um I'm just up here to invite the the youth that are gonna be sharing a little bit about these experiences to come on up.
- 1:41SPEAKER_08: Using the stairs safely.
- 1:51unknown: Okay.
- 1:54SPEAKER_06: We had trouble last time getting on stage.
- 1:57SPEAKER_06: Um uh hello, I'm Carter Bryan.
- 2:02SPEAKER_06: I'm going into eighth grade next year, and uh uh I got a chance to be a junior helper with uh Camp Catapult, and I just really liked it because I got to play with these kindergartners, first second and second graders, and just like bond with them and be able to do all these games and talk about Jesus with them, and I kind of fit right in.
- 2:29SPEAKER_06: Um, but I wanted to share with you guys two instances of when uh I saw God moving through the children, and the first one was when we were worshiping.
- 2:41SPEAKER_06: I just saw all the kids in my group just singing and dancing because we had all these like dances and songs that we could sing and dance to.
- 2:49SPEAKER_06: You saw some of them up there, but uh the kids in my group were just literally dancing for God, it was really cool.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: They were just not afraid what anyone else cared about them, which is a really big issue like now, and it was just really cool.
- 3:06SPEAKER_06: The second time was when we were in a small group, we were talking about how Jesus died for us on the cross and how he rose again and how that makes us go to heaven, and that we don't have to live or in eternal torment and hell.
- 3:26SPEAKER_06: And so I think it just clicked with one of these kids who just looked frowned for a long time and he was just like thinking.
- 3:35SPEAKER_06: He looks over at me and he just says, Jesus really does love us, doesn't he?
- 3:39SPEAKER_06: I said, Yes, he does.
- 3:41SPEAKER_06: He made the ultimate sacrifice for our eternal being.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Hi, my name is Anna Holloway, and I'm gonna be a senior this year.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Um so today I'm gonna be talking to you guys about Sky Ranch, which was our senior high camp, week-long camp down in Oklahoma.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: And so I had never gone to this camp before, even though I've been in the youth group for like what, seven years now?
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Never gone to the camp, and actually wasn't planning on it either until the week before me and my sister, we had had a lot of fun with the interns, got to know them really well, and so we decided, you know what, let's go.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: It'll be a lot of fun, right?
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: So we asked Lori if there's spots, and she said, Yeah, there's a couple spots open, so we sign up and everything, and then our mom's like driving us there to drop us off the day of when we go down there, and we were kind of like, oh shoot, we don't really want to go.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: We're like, we don't know a lot of people, we don't have a lot of friends, we don't think it's gonna be very fun.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, we wish we wouldn't have signed up and everything.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: But oh my goodness, like just the car ride down proved ourselves wrong because we had so much fun.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Like the whole week we played basketball every day, we had some awesome time, got to know so many of the kids in the youth group, and we were like, hey, like these kids are kind of cool, like these are pretty cool kids.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: And if I had to pick like one highlight of the entire week, it would probably be our small group.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: Kylie goes later on, Kylie and Abby go into a little more detail about it, but it was just so cool to sit with kids from all across Topeka, all different schools, environment, and just find this connection through Jesus and just dig deep to find him.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: It was so awesome.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: And so it just like opened my eyes to the youth group that has literally been there my entire life.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: I just haven't reached out and grabbed it.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: And I hope that if you're listening to my story and if you're the same way, I hope this has encouraged you to reach out if you're not in a Sunday school or if you're in the youth group age to come out and just try it.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Give it a chance because it has changed me and it is incredible.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: It is so awesome.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: And as I look back on the summer, I'm like, I didn't make friends, I made a family, and it it is so awesome.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: God's family is awesome.
- 6:35SPEAKER_05: Hi, my name's Amanda Pettit.
- 6:37SPEAKER_05: One of the cool experiences I had in New York was on the day of the tea outreach.
- 6:42SPEAKER_05: So before we left on the trip, Derek gave each of us Bibles to give to someone while we were evangelizing.
- 6:49SPEAKER_05: And it was about halfway through the week.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: I hadn't given my Bible to anyone yet, so I was a little frustrated.
- 6:55SPEAKER_05: And I remember praying that morning, Lord, please bring me someone who needs you and who needs this Bible.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: God definitely answered that prayer.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: So we were handing out free iced tea, and this woman named Annie came up to me.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: Um, she's like in her late 20s, and she had come to New York all the way from Germany, um, with one suitcase, no money, all by herself.
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: And she was just asking me all these questions about Jesus.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: She was just really intrigued.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: Um, and so I explained the gospel to her and everything, and then she just smiled and she was like, My friend Michelle would be so happy that I'm speaking to you right now.
- 7:33SPEAKER_05: And I was like, Why is that?
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: And she told me that her friend Michelle um believes everything I do, and that she's gone, uh, invited her to the church she goes to.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: And I was like, Oh, that's so cool.
- 7:44SPEAKER_05: And so then after that, um, I asked if I could pray for her, if there's been anything on her heart lately, and that is like when she lost it.
- 7:53SPEAKER_05: She just broke down in tears and she like had her arms wide open, hugged me, um, and here I am, this complete total stranger, and she's just sharing every detail of her life, and we just had a really good uh deep conversation from that, and that was really great.
- 8:09SPEAKER_05: And so then I just decided to take the plunge and ask her, Do you want to accept Jesus into your heart?
- 8:15SPEAKER_05: Um, and she said no, and so I was a little shocked about that because I thought we had a really good conversation, but she told me that she didn't want to be chained down by any religion.
- 8:26SPEAKER_05: Um, but I was trying to explain to her that I have freedom in Christ, but she just wasn't really having it, so I didn't want to force anything.
- 8:33SPEAKER_05: Um I asked if she's ever read the Bible before, and um she said no, and so I said, Well, I have one, it's brand new, never been used, it's yours if you want it.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: And so she was like, Yeah, um, I've been meaning to get into that, so I will.
- 8:48SPEAKER_05: And um, I was just like so excited because she like literally lit up like a kid on Christmas morning being given the best gift ever, which it really is, and she was just so excited.
- 8:59SPEAKER_05: Um, and so I showed her some scripture she could look at and everything.
- 9:03SPEAKER_05: Um, and then I asked if she wanted to come to church with us because we were gonna go to church in the city the next day.
- 9:09SPEAKER_05: Um, and we're gonna go to the church called Hillson.
- 9:11SPEAKER_05: And when I said Hillson, she was so excited because she told me, Oh my gosh, that's the church my friend Michelle's uh goes to and then has invited me to before.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: And so we exchanged our Facebook so I could message her what time we're gonna meet up the next day.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: Um and so we ended on great terms, it was everything was so great, and then the next day I messaged her what time we're gonna meet up at church, um, and she never responded, she just like read it, um, and then she was like a no-show at church, and so that was a little discouraging.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: And that happened to be the last day we were in New York, and so when I got back from the trip, I continued to pray for her.
- 9:52SPEAKER_05: Um, and this is where the story gets really good.
- 9:55SPEAKER_05: This is the best part.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: So hold on.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: So um then she texted me a week after the trip, and she said, Tonight I'm sitting at Hillson all by myself, and tonight's the night I started believing in God.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: Uh so that was just really amazing.
- 10:22SPEAKER_05: Um, and she also told me that she keeps the Bible that I gave her in her room in New York, and she reads it often, and she told me that she would have never started believing in God if it wasn't for our encounter.
- 10:33SPEAKER_05: Um, and so I just really think uh her friend Michelle, who invited her to church and gave her that foundation, was the one who was planting those seeds for her, and I was just there to water those seeds, and God definitely let them grow.
- 10:45SPEAKER_05: Um, and I still keep in contact with her.
- 10:47SPEAKER_05: Like I told her last night that I was gonna be talking about her this morning.
- 10:51SPEAKER_05: So I think I'll probably like send her the link about this video and she can watch me talk about her.
- 10:58SPEAKER_05: So that'll be cool.
- 10:59SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, so that's my story.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: Um my name is Kerrigan, and I'm a senior this year, and my story from New York is about one night we were um just relaxing.
- 11:19SPEAKER_04: We had some downtime before we were gonna go out, and um I was talking to a friend from back home, and the friend kind of believes in God, kind of doesn't, goes to church never.
- 11:31SPEAKER_04: Um so yeah, so I was just talking about actually he was talking to me about it.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: So he came to me and was just asking, like, so what do you say to people?
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: What are you talking to these people about?
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: And so I was just kind of like sharing the word with him and telling him like about different key points in the Bible that you learn when you're younger, and um yeah, so he was just asking me about it, and he said that he would consider doing a Bible study with me if I had found a good enough point in the Bible.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: Um and so he had asked me a question about how God was working in a situation in his life, and I said, I'm not really sure, so I'll ask Lori.
- 12:13SPEAKER_04: And I never asked Lori.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: So the next day he asked me, Did you ever talk to Lori?
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: And then so I talked to Lori and then I told him, so I could tell that he was really interested because he was following up with me, and it was just really exciting, and so I'm excited that I get to see where it's going now, since I'm here and he's here.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: Instead of like if I talk to a random person, I probably wouldn't ever see what happens to them.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah.
- 12:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so it's cool to hear about you know their stories where we get to hear and see the the fruit that came out of them.
- 12:56SPEAKER_08: Um I had some really cool conversations in New York.
- 12:59SPEAKER_08: Uh I talked to a guy that was 93 years old, and his name is Gino.
- 13:04SPEAKER_08: Uh he lived in well, he was born in Belgium, and he lived in France, and he lived actually in northern Africa for a while, and then the US, and then Canada, and now he's back in New York and just had a crazy life.
- 13:16SPEAKER_08: Um But throughout that conversation and throughout, I don't know, multiple other conversations that I had the whole week, there was one consistent thing that kept like stopping people from wanting to become Christians.
- 13:30SPEAKER_08: And I don't know if it's the culture of New York, but I don't think it is.
- 13:34SPEAKER_08: Um it's the fact that they see it as rules and regulations, that all these people that we talked to, the the biggest thing that stopped them is they were like, I don't want to be bound to that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_08: I don't want to have all these rules and regulations and um things that I'm tied to.
- 13:50SPEAKER_08: I just want to be free.
- 13:51SPEAKER_08: And that really hit hard with me because the the definition of what Jesus did on the cross was he bought our freedom.
- 14:00SPEAKER_08: So it's just crazy to me that um our world has a really eskewed view of what Christianity is, and we the church um can change that.
- 14:12SPEAKER_08: So it gave me just a spark to want to do that.
- 14:15SPEAKER_08: Um and the second thing that I learned is we or I I don't know, I've my whole life I've been super selfish as to wanting to share the gospel because I'm scared to do it and there's rejection in it, and I didn't want to do it until we went to New York because that was the purpose.
- 14:32SPEAKER_08: But while I was there, I realized there is so much purpose here.
- 14:37SPEAKER_08: You know, we live in Topeka, Kansas, one of the most like crime-rated cities per capita in the US.
- 14:43SPEAKER_08: And there's there's stuff that needs to be done here, there's people that need to be reached here, and I'm just not doing it because I I don't know.
- 14:51SPEAKER_08: I don't know why.
- 14:52SPEAKER_08: There's no answer to it.
- 14:53SPEAKER_08: So it gave me just a fire to want to do it here.
- 14:56SPEAKER_08: Um, so that's my encouragement to you as a church is let's let's do it.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Lori Tennyson.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: I'm the student ministry assistant here at TBC, and I was blessed enough that I was able to go to New York last year and then again on the trip this year.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And I think one of the big differences, last year when we went, we were just terrified.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: We were just praying for courage because we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And so this year, having been there before, we had a little bit of an idea, and so my big prayer going in was just for receptive hearts and for the words to say when we got there.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Um, and I was blessed to have a ton of great conversations with people, and I just wanted to share a couple of them with you really quick.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Um, the first one was with a college student, her name was Jazz, and she happened by when we were doing a tea outreach, and we stopped and chatted.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: And my opening question to pretty much everybody I talked to was, what's your response when you hear the name Jesus?
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: What is what feelings does that elicit in you?
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: And her response to that was, um, I believe the Bible's a lie, I'm an atheist.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: And so I followed that up with, well, if that's the case, then what do you think happens when you die?
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And she said to me, worst case scenario, I just cease to exist.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And I was taken aback.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: I was thankful for her honesty, but I said, is that really worst case scenario?
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: And she said, Well, if I'm in hell, at least I'm still alive.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And so at that point I thought, okay, we've got some room to work here.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: So um, so I was able to share with her just how we believe that God is the giver of every good and perfect gift, and by being inhabitants of this planet that He created, that believer or not, we're still privy to all or many, many of the blessings that He's given us.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: And that if you make that choice to reject God for eternity, if you don't choose Jesus as your means to heaven, then you're looking at an eternity that is void of all of those blessings, most importantly, a relationship and access to God.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: And so I kind of asked her, asked her to imagine what that would be like, and she looked at me and she said, Wow, that's really scary.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: And I said, Yeah, it is really scary.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's why we're here, because we love you, because God loves you, and we don't want that to be an eternity that you have to face.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: And so, with that, I was able to share the gospel with her.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Um, she was very receptive to what I had to say, and I was able to encourage her friend that was with her who was a Christian to follow up and maybe even invite her to church.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: So I felt like that was one conversation that went really well.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Um, another one that I had was with a 16-year-old girl, um, her name was Cade, she's a transgender girl.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: She was sitting on a park bench in uh in Batter, uh not Battery Park, in Washington Park, and had the opportunity to talk to her.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: And when I sat down and listened to her story, she shared with me that she had grown up in a home that was uh Roman Catholic, that she had just felt like she had had a very strict upbringing, lots and lots of rules.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: And God's mercy and grace were not things that she was aware of, they weren't attributes that she'd heard about very often.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: And so I was able to share with her God's just overwhelming love for her, how desperate he was to have a relationship with her, and how he cared so much for her that he sent Christ to die on the cross for her, and that he had every hair on her head numbered.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: That's how precious she is to him.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: And so that was a sight of God that she had not heard of before.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Um, again, she was really receptive to that.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: I encouraged her to go home and start with the gospels and to see Jesus through that lens and um through the lens of what he did for us.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And she said that she would.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Um so I think the the two things that I came away with were number one, as we began our trip there or as we began preparation for our trip this year, we gave all of our kids a copy of a book called The One Thing You Can't Do in Heaven by Mark K.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Hill.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: And if you've never read it, I highly suggest that you do.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: And his bottom line for his book was that a hundred years from now, five hundred years from now, there's only one thing that's gonna divide all of humanity, only one question that's ever gonna be asked that's gonna make a difference, and that is if you've accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: And so, armed with that urgency and that knowledge, I think it really set us out and uh gave us the ability to have conversations with people and really listen to them and hear where they were coming from, and then just trust that the Lord was gonna give us the words to say in each of those individual situations for the lies that those people were believing or the background that they had come from that had influenced where they were at now.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Um so my encouragement to you guys would just be that we haven't just done this for New York.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: That was our big trip that we did this year, but we have gone to Kansas City, we had a group that went to NOTA, we've been at West Ridge Mall and Gage Park, downtown Shawnee Lake.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: We've been doing this all summer, and Derek even had us doing it during the school year a little bit.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Um our kids are learning how to share the gospel, and these are kids that are 14, 15, 16, 17 years old.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Um and I know just like me that you guys have family and friends and co-workers and neighbors that desperately, desperately need to hear the good news of Jesus.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And so I would just hope and pray that as you guys listen to these guys and to our other students and interns that went, um, that you would be inspired by their story and that it would give you the courage to step out in faith that God will give you those words if you take the opportunity to share the word and to share the good news of his son with someone.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: So that's all we have for you on that.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Um we're gonna say goodbye to these guys and we're gonna transition really quick.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Okay, so really quick, um, as you guys know, every summer we are so blessed that the Lord is faithful and he sends us a phenomenal group of interns that we get the honor and privilege of working with over the course of the summer, and they are gifted and they work tirelessly and pour their hearts and lives into our students.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Um, and so we want to give you an opportunity to get to hear from them and get to know them just a little bit.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Our first one is Kylie Clifton, and she's gonna be in a video this morning because she had an obligation at her uh campus where she's gonna be working this fall.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna play a video and let you hear from Kylie, and then we're gonna let you hear from these guys.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Hey guys, my name is Kylie Clifton, and I had the pleasure of being a summer intern here at TBC.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Um and I attend College of the Ozarks, um, and I will be a junior there.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: So that's why I'm not here today.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: I had to go back for work.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: Um so I'm sorry I couldn't be here in person, but I've just loved getting to know the students more this summer and building relationships.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Um, it's been such a big hashtag blessing.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Um I think my biggest highlight was honestly at Sky Ranch.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: After Derek gives a devo or lesson, we all break into small groups.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: And Abby, another intern, and I joined our small groups.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: And we honestly went late every night just because our Discussions were so good, and the students really wanted to dig deep into God's word.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: They didn't just want to answer the questions, and that really inspired me in the same for my own faith to not take things at surface value, but to dig deep.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: And so that was that was amazing for me.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: And then honestly, just the community here at TBC, just being welcomed and invited in.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: And I think us interns did the same just because we had that example, and that was kind of our underlying theme, too, was unity for the summer.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: So thanks so much for letting me come and build relationships.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: And I'm so thankful for the opportunity.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: And I'm sorry again I couldn't be here with you all.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: But I hope to see you soon if I ever come back.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: But just thanks for a great summer.
- 22:55SPEAKER_10: My name is Jacob Haas.
- 22:57SPEAKER_10: A little bit about me.
- 22:59SPEAKER_10: I am going to Washburn University right now, majoring in criminal justice.
- 23:15SPEAKER_10: I was a part of the youth group.
- 23:17SPEAKER_10: I went to like all the events and stuff.
- 23:19SPEAKER_10: And I always thought it would be kind of cool to be an intern.
- 23:23SPEAKER_10: But I like I never really pursued it.
- 23:27SPEAKER_10: And then one day one day Abby told me, hey, you should apply for this.
- 23:32SPEAKER_10: I was like, okay.
- 23:34SPEAKER_10: And here I am.
- 23:36SPEAKER_10: And I came into this summer kind of with the idea that I'm older than these kids, I get to teach them and I get to pour into their lives, and I am the one with all the knowledge.
- 23:53SPEAKER_10: And I hope, I hope that they took something away from me, but I think that I took so much more away from them.
- 24:00SPEAKER_10: The youth at this church are phenomenal.
- 24:03SPEAKER_10: Their relationships with each other, their relationships with God, the relationships that I got to build with them were just incredible.
- 24:11SPEAKER_10: One instance of that was in New York while we were walking around one of the parks evangelizing.
- 24:28SPEAKER_10: And I was I was getting discouraged and I was like, why won't anybody talk to me?
- 24:32SPEAKER_10: And I'm just walking around with like my head down, and two of the students see me and they're like, What's up, Jacob?
- 24:37SPEAKER_10: And I was like, guys, nobody's talking to me.
- 24:40SPEAKER_10: I don't know why.
- 24:41SPEAKER_10: And they they were so encouraging, and they were like, Well, what are you talking to them about?
- 24:46SPEAKER_10: And I told them, and they were like, Well, try this, try this.
- 24:49SPEAKER_10: And they were just so encouraging to me, they were doing my job.
- 24:52SPEAKER_10: I was supposed to be helping them, and they were helping me.
- 24:54SPEAKER_10: But and so we walked around for a little bit just talking, and then they were like, Alright, that kid over there, you're gonna go talk to him.
- 25:01SPEAKER_10: And they were like, This is what you're gonna say, you're gonna do this, this, this, and this.
- 25:04SPEAKER_10: I was like, Alright, I'm gonna do it.
- 25:05SPEAKER_10: And I was like, I fully expected to get shut down.
- 25:08SPEAKER_10: I was like, I've been doing this, it's not gonna work.
- 25:10SPEAKER_10: And so I went up to this kid, he was 14 years old and he was a Muslim, and I said what they said, they what they told me to say, and lo and behold, I had a great conversation.
- 25:20SPEAKER_10: I ended up talking to this kid for 30 minutes, and uh he was really like questioning uh like his beliefs.
- 25:28SPEAKER_10: He didn't really know what he believed, he didn't really want to believe anything, and so we had a really good conversation, and uh I ended up giving away my Bible to him uh that we all got, we all got to give away a Bible that week, and I gave my Bible to him, and I probably never would have talked to that kid if I hadn't been encouraged by the students.
- 25:46SPEAKER_10: And so that's what I'll take away from this summer is just how much they impacted me and how much I grew in my faith.
- 26:00SPEAKER_12: Well, hi everybody.
- 26:02SPEAKER_12: My name is Monica Garcia.
- 26:04SPEAKER_12: Um, a little bit about myself as well is that I go to Kansas State University studying sports medicine.
- 26:09SPEAKER_12: Um, fun fact, I forgot to mention this at the other two services, but I will be transferring to Manhattan Christian College here for this semester, so that's gonna be a really exciting transition for me.
- 26:20SPEAKER_12: Um but I actually grew up in this church as well as Jacob and Abbey.
- 26:24SPEAKER_12: Um, and so it's really interesting just coming back as an intern uh and stepping into a leadership role.
- 26:30SPEAKER_12: Um, it's really interesting, really realizing that um there's a lot of planning to go on behind all of the events that we host for the summer.
- 26:40SPEAKER_12: Um and the past two services I've talked a little bit about Camp Catapult being one of my favorite, uh one of my favorite uh moments in the summer working with the kids was just being able to see uh the junior hires specifically step up into these leadership positions to mentor some of the younger kids in the kids' ministry.
- 26:57SPEAKER_12: Um it was just really great to be able to see um at their age that they're able to just go in head on strong, be able to just serve and um help with as little or as much as they are allowed to.
- 27:10SPEAKER_12: Um it was just really encouraging to get through the summer um throughout, just being able to just have that encouragement and be able to see them um pour their hearts into something that when I was their age I probably wouldn't have done because I was just awkward back then and still kind of am.
- 27:25SPEAKER_12: But um I just wanted to go on even more for that.
- 27:29SPEAKER_12: Um just in general, like this summer, not only just as junior hires, but um all of these kids over here, they're just phenomenal.
- 27:36SPEAKER_12: And um I don't think there's ever been a day where I just wasn't shocked by how willing they were to just pour into each other and especially into us.
- 27:45SPEAKER_12: Um I know that going into this summer, I was like Jacob, wanting to impact these kids, um, be able to just be able be available for them, um, whether they needed just like someone to talk to or to just like grab ice cream and all, but um it just shocks me how open they are to us as interns um throughout this whole summer.
- 28:07SPEAKER_12: I don't think there was a day where we one of us didn't like spend a night at each other's houses or just like hung out, went to the movies or anything.
- 28:14SPEAKER_12: Um it's a funny fact that when we got back from New York, uh we couldn't stand being away from each other, so we planned the next day to hang out with each other all day.
- 28:22SPEAKER_12: And so that's how the rest of the summer went, um, just every day, just going out and hanging out as a whole group.
- 28:28SPEAKER_12: So um big props to these students for just showing me how it is to be fully um hospitable towards uh not only just each other, but um others, no matter the age or no matter the uh level of leadership that they are given, that they're just able to just full-on um just show unconditional love more than what I've ever seen in my life.
- 28:48SPEAKER_12: So just big props to them and big props to uh Lori and Derek for being able to do this year-round.
- 28:53SPEAKER_12: Oh my goodness, I would not be able to take out of that, but definitely big props to them.
- 28:58SPEAKER_09: So, um Did you guys catch that?
- 29:08SPEAKER_09: She said she didn't like you.
- 29:10SPEAKER_09: Just kidding.
- 29:12SPEAKER_09: Just kidding.
- 29:12SPEAKER_09: Um she just said she couldn't handle it, handle you for a year.
- 29:16SPEAKER_09: But it's okay.
- 29:17SPEAKER_09: Um so my name is Dalton Mitchell.
- 29:19SPEAKER_09: I am a student at Kansas State University.
- 29:21SPEAKER_09: Um so I expected to come into this summer learning a lot, and I did, and then some.
- 29:26SPEAKER_09: Um but two of the f two of the things I learned the quickest are I don't know as much as I thought I knew.
- 29:32SPEAKER_09: And I'm and these kids think I'm really cool, and they think I'm more cool than I think that I actually am.
- 29:37SPEAKER_09: Um and so that was really fun because this entire summer I bonded with them and with the interns.
- 29:43SPEAKER_09: Um and not only did I learn so much more from them than I think that I taught them, um, but the relationships and the community at TBC impacted my life a lot.
- 29:56SPEAKER_09: So, not only with the fellow interns, um, but as well with the students.
- 30:02SPEAKER_09: And one of the coolest experiences that I had that summer was at Summer Sizzle, we all shared our testimonies, us interns.
- 30:09SPEAKER_09: And after I shared mine, a couple students came up to me and talked about the connections and the similarities that our stories had.
- 30:17SPEAKER_09: Um, and it was really cool to see because it took me back to when I was younger.
- 30:21SPEAKER_09: And I know when I was younger in the youth group, I wished that I had somebody college age or an older role model, and just being able to sort of be that for younger students who remind me of myself and remind me of that same period of life and where you sort of don't know a lot, but you're really seeking answers.
- 30:41SPEAKER_09: And actually, I don't know if that ever stops.
- 30:44SPEAKER_09: You always seek answers, but I see myself in your guys' shoes, and it was so cool to become your friend this summer.
- 30:51SPEAKER_09: It was less of a leader and the mic just turned off, but that's probably my cue.
- 30:58SPEAKER_09: I'm talking too long.
- 30:59SPEAKER_09: Thanks.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: Hi, my name is Abby Holloway, and I'm going to be a junior at Washburn University studying music and English.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: And this is actually my second year having the privilege to intern with the youth ministry.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: And I just have to say that there's no better way I could spend my summers because there's nothing like just having fun and building relationships with these kids.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: But not only that, but like Kylie talked about having uh the deep small group talks and standing in a room and hearing all of these youth behind you just sh singing for Jesus and worshiping with all their hearts.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: There's just nothing like that.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: Um but one of the one of the biggest things that I was excited for coming into this summer is already having kind of a connection with a lot of the students and um having the opportunity to go deeper and build better and deeper relationships with them.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: And um, but one of the biggest things I was nervous about was uh what our intern group was gonna be like because I didn't really know any of them super well, and I was just kind of nervous of how that was gonna go.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: Um but uh almost like from the first day uh we just all clicked and we were all like we were gonna do anything we could to make the mission happen and um we're gonna be unified all together just to make it work.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: And um I realized at the end of this summer that God actually answered a prayer that I have prayed for a long time, and that was um giving me a group of uh friends um that I can uh rely on and that support me and support my family and um challenge me in my faith and encourage me and um just draw me closer to God, and so that's the biggest thing that I've been blessed with this summer, but it's also been such a huge blessing to see all of these kids, like we've been talking about, showing God and all that they do.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: Um, and one of my examples of that is while we were on one of our trips, there was a girl that was kind of having a meltdown and um just was really discouraged and um just down in the dumps, and uh one of our senior girls just uh took the initiative and um just comforted her and encouraged her and stayed up like late into the night with her, just um being there for her, and that just really moved me because um I I just think that's just awesome how God uh uses us to touch and encourage the people around us.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: And so it's just been a true honor to um spend time with you all this summer, and I'll definitely miss it this semester.
- 33:57SPEAKER_08: And Dalton has been my best friend for almost three years now, and I'll tell you, he is not cool.
- 34:04SPEAKER_08: So fun fact, he's not cool.
- 34:09SPEAKER_08: He reads fantasy.
- 34:13SPEAKER_08: I don't know what that's sort of anything.
- 34:15SPEAKER_08: Um so yeah, I'm Shane, and I'm gonna be a senior at MCC.
- 34:26SPEAKER_08: Um and I'm the mean one apparently, but I study pastoral ministry and I still really have no idea what I'm gonna do with it, but that's okay because God's in control.
- 34:38SPEAKER_08: Um but yeah, I think I've learned so much more this summer than I could have ever, ever thought that I would learn.
- 34:49SPEAKER_08: Um or ever even, yeah, I never I never thought I was gonna learn as much as I did.
- 34:54SPEAKER_08: Um, and that's because I came into the summer not wanting to really be here.
- 34:59SPEAKER_08: Um I came here, I I don't know, I told myself that I would never be back in Topeka because I'm from Topeka for a summer.
- 35:08SPEAKER_08: Um and so coming back here was kind of like a I didn't know why I was here necessarily, and the Lord was really quick to show me why I was here, and that was to learn and to break down so much pride that I had had stored up.
- 35:22SPEAKER_08: Um and so I just learned so much from these youth.
- 35:26SPEAKER_08: Um so much.
- 35:29SPEAKER_08: They they love people endlessly.
- 35:32SPEAKER_08: I mean, they we came here and it felt like I had been here for months the first day because they uh took the time to like read our biographies and learn about us and stalk us on Facebook, and it's like they knew us more than we knew ourselves coming here.
- 35:49SPEAKER_08: Um but they're so great, and you cannot do I don't know, like we we go everywhere in like groups of 30 people, and to have 30 students together in one place, and there's no arguments, there's no um, I don't know, everyone's just you united and they love each other so well and love everyone that we come in contact with so well.
- 36:13SPEAKER_08: And I would have never done that um at this age.
- 36:16SPEAKER_08: So just watching them, they are really honestly like role models to us.
- 36:23SPEAKER_08: So I I've I've learned so much this summer.
- 36:32SPEAKER_11: Good job, guys.
- 36:35SPEAKER_11: It really has been has been an honor working with all of these guys this summer.
- 36:39SPEAKER_11: Uh my name is Derek, and I'm the student ministry pastor here at TBC.
- 36:44SPEAKER_11: And it's been it's been a blast seeing students come and you know take the take the offering and greeting and work in the tech booth and just all kinds of different things to make this happen.
- 36:58SPEAKER_11: It's great to see their willingness and great to see all that God has been doing through them over this last year.
- 37:04SPEAKER_11: And over the last school year, we've had really two main focuses.
- 37:08SPEAKER_11: The first is evangelism, and then the second one is discipleship.
- 37:12SPEAKER_11: And so you've heard a lot about evangelism from New York to different places in town and Kansas City, and it's great to see that our students are able to articulate the gospel well and be able to present that good news message to somebody who doesn't know Christ.
- 37:27SPEAKER_11: But we also had a strong focus on discipleship, and through that, over the last year, we got to start a mentoring program here at TBC where we match students who are interested in deepening their faith, interested in getting together, you know, twice a month for about an hour each time with an older adult, somebody who's further along in their faith.
- 37:48SPEAKER_11: And so right now I'm gonna ask that my wife Gabby and then Sydney, if you guys would come on up.
- 37:54SPEAKER_11: I would really like for you guys to get an insider's look at what one of these relationships looks like.
- 38:02SPEAKER_11: And so they've been meeting for a little over a year now, um, roughly about twice a month, so about two hours a month or so, and they have some experiences with our new mentoring program that I think you guys will really want to hear.
- 38:19SPEAKER_11: So, Gabby, first question for you is why would you want to be a mentor anyway?
- 38:25SPEAKER_13: When I was in college, I had some ladies who really poured into me and were my mentors, and that was a time when my faith really grew and it became my own.
- 38:34SPEAKER_13: And so um growing up in that during the college years, I kind of looked back on it and it was something that I really cherished, and I wanted to be able to do that for a younger woman.
- 38:45SPEAKER_11: So and Sydney, for you and being involved in band and all these other things that are out there, why would you seek out a mentor and take the time to do that?
- 38:55SPEAKER_07: Um for the couple years before I had talked about doing it, I just it had been on my heart that I need to share some things and kind of open up more to someone that I trusted.
- 39:07SPEAKER_07: And like it just it seemed like the right thing to do, and I knew um God was calling me to talk to someone.
- 39:15SPEAKER_11: That's great.
- 39:15SPEAKER_11: Gabby, what's been a highlight for you of being able to do mentoring with Sydney?
- 39:20SPEAKER_13: Just getting to meet with Sydney, um, the places that we would go to grab a smoothie or a cookie or whatever it was.
- 39:28SPEAKER_13: Um, but just those times that we met and watching her just open up and getting to talk about what was going on in her life and her relationship with Christ.
- 39:37SPEAKER_13: Um it was just enjoyable to watch her grow over the year and to be a small part of it.
- 39:44SPEAKER_11: So Sydney, what about you?
- 39:46SPEAKER_11: What's been a highlight for you over the past year?
- 39:48SPEAKER_07: I think um just growing more comfortable talking and uh that I've gotten closer to Gabby, and I think that um just going through this with her, it's been a lot easier to go through what I struggle with, and um it's just been nice to have a person that I can talk to about really anything and not worry about being judged or any of that.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 40:12SPEAKER_11: Yeah.
- 40:13SPEAKER_11: Gabby, what would you say um for those adults who are are Christians, who are believers, and who maybe don't have somebody to mentor, what what reason or maybe one reason would you give as some encouragement as to why they should think about mentoring?
- 40:30SPEAKER_13: It's such a blessing to be a mentor.
- 40:32SPEAKER_13: Not only do you get to watch another person grow, but you get to grow in your own faith.
- 40:39SPEAKER_13: Um, just being able to rely on God in a new way and asking him, Lord, you know, use me in this young woman's life, give me words to say, show me scripture, whatever it is.
- 40:50SPEAKER_13: Um, but just getting to trust God in a whole new way and watching him work through it, and then also just watching her grow, it really is a blessing and a joy to get to be a part of it.
- 41:02SPEAKER_13: So that'd probably be the biggest reason to do it.
- 41:05SPEAKER_11: And Sydney, for those maybe students or other adults who've never had a mentor in their life, what what reason would you give them or encouragement as to why they would seek out a mentor?
- 41:16SPEAKER_07: Um I think that it really does help you to grow in your faith when you choose someone to pour into you and learn from.
- 41:24SPEAKER_07: And especially since Gabby's a little older than me and a little farther along, I learn new things about maybe that I didn't know before.
- 41:33SPEAKER_07: And it's nice to just be able to trust someone.
- 41:36SPEAKER_07: And I think that if you are considering it, definitely do it and pray about who you're gonna do it with because you'll grow in ways you probably wouldn't before, and it's just it's a really good experience.
- 41:47SPEAKER_07: So I encourage you to do that.
- 41:49SPEAKER_13: I'm gonna tack on something really quick.
- 41:51SPEAKER_13: So we didn't always do our meetings formally either.
- 41:55SPEAKER_13: There was a few times where I said, Sydney, I really need to go to the laundromat and wash my bed spread.
- 41:59SPEAKER_13: Can we do our time at the laundromat?
- 42:01SPEAKER_13: And so we would grab a drink and go there.
- 42:04SPEAKER_13: So it's not like it was this very formal thing, and sometimes that's intimidating for adults if you're considering it.
- 42:11SPEAKER_13: And so just knowing, you know, it can be as informal as you need it to be.
- 42:14SPEAKER_13: She's gone grocery shopping with me once because I really needed to get that done.
- 42:19SPEAKER_13: But there's also been times where we were just focusing on one another and getting to grow in that.
- 42:24unknown: Cool.
- 42:25SPEAKER_11: Well, thank you guys.
- 42:26SPEAKER_11: Appreciate that.
- 42:27SPEAKER_11: Hopefully, you got.
- 42:35SPEAKER_11: Yeah, just a glimpse into what one mentoring relationship looks like, and every single one of them is completely different, completely unique based on the mentor, based on the mentee, and what works best for them to help that relationship grow in the Lord.
- 42:52SPEAKER_11: Uh, something that we do each year here at TBC on New Sunday is we take up an intern, a summer staff offering.
- 43:00SPEAKER_11: And so, guys, if you would come forward, and one of the reasons that we do this is just so we can show our summer staff, show our interns how much we love them, how much we appreciate them.
- 43:12SPEAKER_11: And this is just one small way that we're able to do that.
- 43:15SPEAKER_11: All these guys are going back to school, they're all involved in different ministries, different organizations, uh, back on their campus, and they're gonna be able to take everything that they've experienced, everything that they've learned throughout this entire summer back to their campuses and have an impact for Jesus there.
- 43:32SPEAKER_11: And so if you feel like you are led to do that, like God is leading you in that direction, I'd highly encourage you to do that as well.
- 43:40SPEAKER_11: And we can't do any of our ministry, we can't have you Sunday, we can't do these things without our terrific leaders, whether they're year round uh Sunday leaders or midweeks, or whether they're mentors throughout the year, whether they're interns, we can't do it without people who are.
- 44:00SPEAKER_11: Solid in their faith, people who are growing themselves in Christ, and then being able to give back their time, give back their efforts, give back their talents so that we can raise up these next teenagers for the Lord.
- 44:12SPEAKER_11: And so right now, what we're gonna do is we're gonna watch a video and it's going to highlight some of our leadership over the past year.
- 44:27SPEAKER_11: Definitely.
- 44:28SPEAKER_11: So thank you, thank you, leaders, and everybody who is involved.
- 44:31SPEAKER_11: It's been a terrific summer.
- 44:33SPEAKER_11: It's been a terrific school year here at TBC in the student ministry.
- 44:37SPEAKER_11: And as Jacob said earlier, our theme this summer was hashtag blessed and finding out what it really means to be blessed.
- 44:44SPEAKER_11: And we did that by looking at the Sermon on the Mount.
- 44:48SPEAKER_11: And the beginning are those Beatitudes and blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, all these things that you're not going to see on Facebook, you're not going to see posted on social media anywhere, but that are true and that Jesus describes as being blessed.
- 45:03SPEAKER_11: And so at the very end of the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew chapter 7, the last about eight verses, Jesus finishes his entire sermon with talking about two different foundations.
- 45:15SPEAKER_11: One of those foundations is on the rock, and the other foundation is on the sand.
- 45:20SPEAKER_11: And Jesus was a carpenter.
- 45:23SPEAKER_11: So he wasn't just using this as a great illustration, although it was, but he had personal experience with it because he built stuff.
- 45:30SPEAKER_11: And so he probably saw other people build things and realized oh, if you build something such as a house on sand, it's not going to work.
- 45:39SPEAKER_11: It's going to crumble as soon as any kind of adversity hits, as soon as the wind hits, the water, that thing's coming down.
- 45:46SPEAKER_11: And as we relate that to our spiritual lives, the beginning of our rock solid foundation is trusting Jesus Christ as our Savior.
- 45:54SPEAKER_11: And so He's done the work already.
- 45:56SPEAKER_11: He's already finished it.
- 45:58SPEAKER_11: He did it at the cross for us and he proved that he was God by rising again for us.
- 46:02SPEAKER_11: And so if you haven't made that decision to trust Christ, I would ask that you pray about that, that you think about that, and that you would do that today.
- 46:11SPEAKER_11: But our Christian life doesn't end right when we trust Christ.
- 46:15SPEAKER_11: We still have all the rest of this life that we're here for, and that's where that long-term discipleship process comes in.
- 46:22SPEAKER_11: And so I would highly encourage you, if you can't point to somebody in your life and say, man, I know that I am helping this person grow in the Lord.
- 46:31SPEAKER_11: It might be a sibling, it might be a coworker, it might be a friend or somebody in your Bible study.
- 46:36SPEAKER_11: But if you can't do that, I would encourage you to pray about that, seek that out and be a mentor.
- 46:42SPEAKER_11: Help somebody who's younger than you grow up in their faith as you continue to grow in your faith too.
- 46:48SPEAKER_11: And I guarantee that if we took a survey across the room and asked people who have grown in their relationship with the Lord and ask you, hey, can you point to one person who has helped you?
- 47:02SPEAKER_11: Every single one of us can point to at least one person and say, this specific person spent time with me, this specific person helped me grow in the Lord.
- 47:10SPEAKER_11: And so I would urge you and ask you to think about that and pray about that.
- 47:14SPEAKER_11: And maybe that's even with the student ministry.
- 47:17SPEAKER_11: And so if you'd like more information about that, maybe it's being a small group leader on either Sundays or Wednesdays, or maybe being a mentor to one of our students here at TBC, you know, a couple hours a month.
- 47:29SPEAKER_11: Contact me.
- 47:30SPEAKER_11: There's my email that's on the back of the bulletins.
- 47:33SPEAKER_11: And also we're having Discovery Sunday coming up two weeks from today.
- 47:37SPEAKER_11: And we'll have a booth out there as well as all the other ministries that are here at TBC as opportunities where you can get plugged in, where the Lord would have you get plugged in at.
- 47:47SPEAKER_11: So thank you for listening to all of our students.
- 47:50SPEAKER_11: They're terrific.
- 47:51SPEAKER_11: And I hope that you are encouraged.
- 47:52SPEAKER_11: I hope that you are hashtag blessed through all the ways that God is working in the student ministry.
- 47:59SPEAKER_11: Now I'd just like to pray for us in closing.
- 48:01SPEAKER_11: Heavenly Father, you are good to us.
- 48:04SPEAKER_11: You are awesome, even more than we can imagine.
- 48:07SPEAKER_11: Thank you for sending Jesus Christ to die on the cross for us, paying the penalty that we couldn't pay for ourselves.
- 48:14SPEAKER_11: And through that and through our faith in you, that we get to live with you forever, we get to live eternally in heaven.
- 48:21SPEAKER_11: Thank you for that opportunity and love and grace that we don't deserve, but but that you offer to us.
- 48:26SPEAKER_11: And I pray that if there's anybody here who hasn't trusted you as your savior, that you would work in their heart and that they would do that.
- 48:32SPEAKER_11: And also with discipleship.
