- 0:07The 1976 Major League Baseball All-Star game took place at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 13th, 1976.
- 0:16This was the third All-Star game to be played in Philadelphia, but the first at Veterans Stadium.
- 0:21The game was held at Shy Park in both 1943 and 52.
- 0:25This was the first All-Star game that featured both O Canada and the Star Spangled Banner during the pre-game ceremonies.
- 0:31Even though the Montreal Expos had been in the league since 1969, the American League planned to expand into Toronto with the Blue Jays in 1977,
- 0:39so it took this opportunity to start this new tradition.
- 0:42The American League starting lineup included two future Hall of Famers, Rod Carew at first and George Brett at third.
- 0:48They were managed by the Red Sox' Daryl Johnson, who would start Detroit rookie phenom Mark the Bird Fittich on the mound.
- 0:54Mark entered the game with a 9-2 record, which included nine complete games and his 11 starts.
- 0:59The National League was managed by Sparky Anderson, who led the Reds to the championship in 1975,
- 1:04and they were still flying high in 1976 with the 53-33 record entering the break.
- 1:10This game featured seven Cincinnati batters, including five that were in the starting lineup.
- 1:15This audio recording is from the CBS Radio broadcast featuring announcers Jack Buck, Brent Musburger, and Andy Musser.
- 1:22Randy Jones, the left-hander, a 16-game winner, will pitch to Ron LaFleur.
- 1:27The thing about Jones is he seldom gives you anything good to hit.
- 1:30He won't let you hit his fastball. He's a secret ball pitcher.
- 1:33He keeps those infielders busy, rolls his in at third base.
- 1:37As Frank Robinson coaches at first base and Gene Mark coaches at third for Daryl Johnson.
- 1:42The umpire waits until the field is clear, and then he says, play ball, and the 47th annual All-Star game is underway.
- 1:50The first pitch is low, ball one.
- 1:54And most of the pitches from Randy Jones will be right down around the knees.
- 2:00Here it comes, swing and a foul at the feet of the catcher, Johnny Bench, one ball, one strike.
- 2:05They say that Jones' strike zone is from below the knee to the top of the knee, and I don't think they stretch the point very much.
- 2:14One ball, one strike from the floor. They play him straight away with the left fielder, Luzinski, deep.
- 2:19The curveball is hit on the ground, through the hole, and a left up base hit.
- 2:22And that's the way it starts, and the speedy Ron LaFleur is on base.
- 2:26Luzinski gets it back in, and that's reflective of what we're talking about.
- 2:31The tiny ball ball and the fastball between the two.
- 2:35That's exactly what you were pointing out just prior to the start of the game, Jack, with Randy Jones not being the strikeout pitcher
- 2:43and inviting the ball players to hit the ball on the ground. They could get them through in the hole, as they did.
- 2:48Jones is a nut-head.
- 2:50Now, let's see if we can get a few of these things in the hole.
- 3:15One strike to count on Karoo.
- 3:18I think Jones came pretty close to a balk move that time, but nothing was called.
- 3:24A lead by the runner, the pitch to the plate, and the curveball stays inside to even it up, the ball and the strike on Karoo.
- 3:30The on-deck hitter is George Brett.
- 3:32And even though the National League is favored, a lot of people like the chances of the American League this year
- 3:39because of the speed and power that they have that they didn't have before.
- 3:42The pitch is up and in. Two balls and a strike. Bench came up ready to throw.
- 3:46The interesting thing you see, LaFleur with his great speed and Bench with his fine throwing arm match up here.
- 3:52Come on, Ron, go ahead and run.
- 3:55Two balls and a strike, the pitch and a swing, and a double play ball.
- 3:59To Morgan, to Concepcion, over to Perce, a double play.
- 4:03That was made to order. A big bounce to Morgan.
- 4:06And despite the running speed of Karoo, who knew that he had plenty of time and they turned it over easily.
- 4:12Four, six, three, two out, and George Brett is the batter.
- 4:16So Jack Fox, Marty Anderson can start with Morgan and Concepcion, and then late in the game he can switch to the Philadelphia and field.
- 4:24He can have Cash in second and Boyd short, and those are men who have worked together all along.
- 4:28He's not going to lose a thing when he puts in those substitutes, and now the base is empty.
- 4:32And there again is another of the secrets of Jones pitching. You get on base and he'll throw that double play ball.
- 4:38Here is ball one loaded George Brett, who has the most hits this year of any player in either lineup, with a total of 122.
- 4:45The Kansas City infielder is batting 365.
- 4:49Now if you'll place him to the opposite field, the pitch from Jones is a curve ball that misses.
- 4:53It's inside for ball two. Jones, as you know, seldom walks anybody, so Brett can look for something to hit right here.
- 5:01But even when he's behind on the count, he won't give in. The pitch is high for a ball, ball three.
- 5:07I get to walk him just to make me look bad.
- 5:11Two men out, nobody on base. First inning, the American League batting, Jones pitching to Brett in his low ball, before he draws the walk.
- 5:22So, the second base runner of the opening inning, and that gives the number four hitter, Thurman Munson, a chance to bat.
- 5:28The Yankee catcher is batting 319.
- 5:33Most everybody, Brent, is a threat at the plate to hit the long ball in this ballpark.
- 5:39Well, particularly Thurman Munson is having an excellent year with the bat, Jack Burke, even though he was injured in a collision at home play,
- 5:45Charlie Spikes of the Cleveland Indians charged into him a couple of weeks ago.
- 5:49He had to play some games in the outfield. He's back now behind the plate. I think we'll see the National League try to test his throwing on.
- 5:56On at first base is George Brett. Jones checks him, brings it into the right-handed batter, Munson. He hits it up the middle, and it's fielded by Concepcion to Morgan for a force-out,
- 6:06and the inning is over. And you can tell by the coolness of the infielders that they've been through the heavy fireworks before in that Cincinnati ball club.
- 6:16One hit and one left for the American League after one half inning, no score.
- 6:23Well, we're anxious to catch the act of Mark Pidrich, the right-hander of the Detroit Tigers, who is affectionately called the Bird.
- 6:32I have never seen him hit myself. Brandy spells his name, F-I-D-R-Y-C-H. He was born in Worcester, Mass., lives in Northboro, and he is 9-2, and only the second rookie to ever start an All-Star game.
- 6:45And Jack the First, of course, was Dave Stenhouse of Washington in back in 1968. You have not seen Pidrich or Innes retreat, but what I want to see tonight is whether or not he will go through all of the antics in front of an All-Star game.
- 6:58Will he talk to the baseball as much as he has during the first half of the season?
- 7:02We'll see if he's intimidated by his surroundings. George Brett, the third baseman, is over to talk to the youngster, and the leadoff man is going to be Pete Rose, who possesses 117 base hits already this year.
- 7:15This broadcast is authorized and are rights granted by the Major League Baseball, solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 7:24Any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the description and account of this game without the express written consent of the Commissioner of Baseball is prohibited.
- 7:36Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds, the switch hitters, will be up there batting left-handed against Pidrich, the tall right-hander, who is 6'3".
- 7:45The catcher is Thurman Munson. They have Brett at third base for the American League, with Toby Harrah at shortstop, the second baseman Bobby Gritch and Rod Carew at first.
- 7:55On the floors and left, Freddie Lynn in center field, and the right fielder is Rusty Stout.
- 8:02John McNamara coaches at third base. He's the manager of the San Diego Padres.
- 8:07The Philadelphia manager is the first base coach, and the first pitch of the night from Mark Pidrich is on the way.
- 8:15And it stays outside. It's ball one, according to Harry Wendelstedt, the playdumb player.
- 8:22They play Rose about straight away, and he swings and gets a base hit to center. A line drive single to center.
- 8:29Brett Lynn gets it back in, and Pete Rose is safely on, and I'm sure that the American Leaguers are saying, come on, Mark, hold us in.
- 8:37We've lost enough of these games as of late. Four in a row they've lost to the National League.
- 8:43Jack, Mark has spent so much energy the last couple of days just talking to media representatives here in Philadelphia.
- 8:50He has entertained everyone at the press conference. He was a nonstop talker for about 30 minutes, and he kept it up for another hour.
- 8:57He's going to be a very tired young man tonight. Rose takes his lead. Seldom does any running.
- 9:02Steve Garvey is the batter. The Dodger first baseman takes a pitch which sinks low, ball one.
- 9:06A little more power at the plate now on the first with Garvey. Seven home runs and even 300 batting mark.
- 9:12He was the most valuable player in the All-Star game a couple of years ago. Strong right-handed batter.
- 9:17They're playing the ball. The pitch coming, and it's low for a ball. Ball two.
- 9:21So, Fenrich gave up a base hit to feed Rose, and he used two balls, no strikes on Steve Garvey with Joe Morgan on deck.
- 9:30What a great night for baseball at this time of year in Philadelphia.
- 9:33Garvey hits one in the right field. Rusty Stobb on the move. Can't get it.
- 9:37Base hit, and it goes to the wall. Stobb falls down, and Rose is going to score.
- 9:41Garvey's going to end up at third base. Rose scores. Standing up. One-nothing actually. Garvey has heard nobody else.
- 9:52And Jack, there we saw one of the problems presented by the artificial playing surface.
- 9:58The ball was stroked out into right field. It started to curve as Rusty Stobb was coming over.
- 10:03It struck in front of him and bounced away quickly, and as Stobb fell, the ball rolled back to the wall.
- 10:09And by the time he could retrieve it, the National League had scored.
- 10:12That's the problem for outfielders on the Astro Derby. You get too close to this baseball, and it'll bounce over your head.
- 10:18Now the infield is playing back. Off the stretch is Fenrich Morgan, the batter, and he swings and misses.
- 10:23Strike one. Garvey's at third. Nobody else.
- 10:29Garvey is now five out of eight in National League play.
- 10:34They give him a three-base hit all the way. Morgan trying to get the run home. He swings and pops it up.
- 10:40That will not get the run home with nobody out. I don't think Garvey will try it.
- 10:44Stobbs under the ball, makes the catch, and stays at third as the throw comes in.
- 10:48And he throws strikes. Not throws strikes in the play, but Garvey stayed at third, and it'll be up to George Foster with one out to chase Garvey home from third.
- 10:57George Foster is enjoying a remarkable season for the Cincinnati Reds. Jack Plyer, the game's Marky Anderson, was saying that he thinks Foster this year is the most improved player in the National League.
- 11:09Brother, can he get those runs home? He's driven in 72 this year. He has more runs added in than any player on the field here tonight.
- 11:17He has drilled 17 home runs, and when he hits the ball, it just goes and goes and goes.
- 11:22He's slender, but he's strong. The infield is still back, so a ground ball to anybody who's at the third baseman or first baseman will get the runner home.
- 11:30Strike one called as Fidrich gets ahead, and he could go for the strikeout here. He needs it.
- 11:35Off the stretch, a check on Garvey, the pitch to Foster, and a ground ball will get the runner home. It's hit to the second baseman, Grip. He's up. He throws two out, but it's good or nothing as Garvey caught it home.
- 11:46I was sort of surprised here on the after court that they played the infielders back as far as they did to allow the run score, and here's a big hand for Drake Lizinski.
- 11:57Lizinski has scored the only starter in the Philadelphia Phillies lineup, the big favorite. What a team they've got this year, Jack. A 10-game lead here at the All-Star Game. Blake and the Pirates have played very well.
- 12:10Lizinski on the first one pops it up. It'll be caught. Foul ball, Karou, chases it. That will end the first inning, and Rod has it for the off, but the National League has jumped on top.
- 12:20Two runs, two hits, nobody left after one, two-nothing National League.
- 12:24Campaign 76, the Democratic National Convention, led by Claire Gordon in New York.
- 12:30Jack, you know it's a privilege tonight to have this game carried around the world by the American Forces Radio. We've been listened to by servicemen on either side of the globe, and I know that many of your games, your St. Louis Cardinal broadcasts, have already been carried across the world, and occasionally you hear from servicemen over there.
- 12:47Yes, we do, and we're always pleased to hear from the folks, and we better include the gals in there, Brent, too.
- 12:52I've forgotten. They've changed the Army today.
- 12:56I was surprised, Brent, with a runner on it third and one out, that the American League played it as loosely as they did with the second baseman and shortstop as deep as they were on this fast turf. They seemed to give up that run very, very easily. Had they been playing in, the run would not have scored.
- 13:10They must be expecting an explosion here with the bats.
- 13:13I guess they think they can score runs of their own, and Fred Lynn will lead it off. In the first inning, the American League had a base hit by Ron LaFleur, a double play off the batter of Rod Carew, George Brett DeRualk, and then Munson forced him with a ground ball to shortstop.
- 13:28So it's Fred Lynn, the Rookie of the Year last year in the American League, leading off, and he's up to his old tricks, batting 324. Left-handed batter, first pitch, swing and a miss, on the curveball from Randy Jones.
- 13:39And the National Leaguers are up to their old tricks. They're out in front, 2-0 after one. Outfield straightaway for Lynn, Jones brings it in, fastball is hit on the ground foul, and that's strike two, Garvey gets it back into play.
- 13:51It'll be Lynn, then Toby Hara, then Rusty Staub. Staub made the mistake in that opening inning of getting a little bit too close to that ball. He thought he could catch it, and when he was unable to do so, it bounced by him for a three-base hit.
- 14:04A foul by Lynn keeps him at the plate. No balls, two strikes. And frequently when Randy Jones is pitching, you'll look up and you'll see that count, no balls, two strikes.
- 14:15And then he'll get you to go for that sicker ball, or the bad fastball off the plate. He'll seldom let you hit his fastball. The pitch coming, curve, and a little tap foul, still on two.
- 14:28Several players, Jack, have made derogatory comments about the velocity of Jones' pitches, but I think it is a testament to what you can do with good control and the good sicker ball.
- 14:40And a lot of youngsters who don't have that overpowering fastball should follow his lead. The pitcher curveball is popped straight up by Fred Lynn. It's a foul ball back near the stands.
- 14:48This bench has a crack at it near the dugout, and one-handed by Garvey. He the one could have caught it, but Garvey did, and Lynn has fouled out.
- 14:58I'll tell you this about Randy Jones. If you think he doesn't have a fastball, start crowding the plate and reaching for that outside pitch, and he'll spin you around and show you a little better fastball than he does when he wants you to hit his fastball.
- 15:13The batter is Toby Harrah. Here's a shortstop with power. That's an unusual commodity. He is belted eight for the Rangers and batting 278. Right-handed batter, the pitch is low ball.
- 15:27Johnny Bench behind the plate. Rose guards the line with Harrah at the plate, and Concepcion is in the hole. The pitch is swung on and hit to Rose on one bounce. Plenty of time. He throws him out. Seagull.
- 15:40Jones keeps those infielders busy, and Rose throws out Harrah. Rusty Stobb will bat with the bases empty. Here's the fellows at the privilege of being on three National League All-Star games, and now he wears the uniform of the Detroit Tigers.
- 15:53In the offseason, he was traded for pitcher Mickey Lulich. He got off to a terrible start with the New York Mets, but he's been coming on. A lot of it, Jack, was lack of support. The Mets didn't score for him.
- 16:02He's a tough out. The first pitch is outside from Randy Jones. You'd expect Rusty to take this pitcher up the middle or go the other way, and he's capable of that. Or he can hit with power. He's hit six home runs. Strike called.
- 16:14Off the inside corner. Jack, it's amazing to me that a player who's as good as Rusty Stobb has been traded as many times as he has. Here's the pitch, and it is a curve ball inside. Ball two, two and one.
- 16:28Started with Houston, and then it was with Montreal and the New York Mets, and now with the Detroit Tigers. He's choked up on the bat a bit and takes a strike over the inside corner. He bailed out on a curve ball, and Jones dropped it over the edge. Two balls, two strikes.
- 16:45Bases empty. Two men out as the American League bats second inning, two nothing National League. Fastball inside as Jones tried to slip it by him. He throws so slowly that when he throws his fastball, it looks like Bob Feller cut it loose.
- 16:58It's a full count and the pitch, and a line drive base hit to right. Stobb singles with two men out, giving Bobby Gritch a chance to hit, and that's the second hit for the American League, and that's another part of Jones' philosophy.
- 17:11Three and two, here, hit it. He won't put you down. Let the fielders do the work, which has of course contributed greatly to his 16 victories as he comes into this All-Star game. That is the most victories by any pitcher at an All-Star break.
- 17:26Bobby Gritch is the batter, and the American League could use some of his power, and he is capable. He has hit seven home runs. A right-handed batter, the first pitch coming. It's a ball, low and outside as Jones turned it over.
- 17:38He ran away from the right-handed batter a bit. They play Gritch to pull. The Bluzinski back near the track and left field. Here it comes, and it's high and away, and that's ball two.
- 17:51The National Leaguers are leading here, two to nothing in the second inning. Stobb on it first for the American League, two out, and Gritch waiting at the plate and digging in.
- 18:00A 2-0 count and a ground ball and a half swing to the charging Concepcion. He throws him out. I had to chuckle because even on 2-0 Gritch didn't get a good swing.
- 18:106-3 on the putout, a hit and one left, two left for the American League. They trail after an inning and a half, two to nothing.
- 18:17Campaign 76, the Democratic National Convention. Back here in Philadelphia, and right now Mark Federich is out there warming up, and Jack so far he has not been talking to the baseball.
- 18:31We've seen none of the antics which has attracted so much attention. Here at the ballpark they point out that baseball has dedicated this All-Star game to the United States Navy, where we are hopeful of having the pleasure of visiting with a U.S. Navy representative here during the course of the game.
- 18:50Brent Busberg, your home is Billings, Montana, and tomorrow night an old friend of ours, Max Petkin, will be up there entertaining at the ballpark. He is a great performer, I guess one of the last of the old-time clowns.
- 19:03I remember Price was a performer. He used to travel around with a Jeep and catch a lot of flyballs. Max of course goes out, I think he does a little coaching during the game. He's trying to get Bill Beck to put him on the third base line back in Chicago.
- 19:15He's going to be in Billings tomorrow and Denver on Thursday and El Paso, Texas on the 16th. Johnny Bench lays it off for the National League, National League on top to the melting. They bat in the home half of the second inning.
- 19:28Bench has belted nine thus far. First pitch to him from Fidrich is low for a ball. It will be Bench, Kingman, and Concepcion. And of course the pitchers will bat, this being a National League ballpark. Here is a strike call as Fidrich got his fastball in there.
- 19:45He does not have an overpowering fastball. He has a good sinker ball as does Randy Jones. He's a slider pitcher. Swing and a miss. Foul tip into the glove of the catcher. Permanence and one ball, two strikes. I think Mark was beginning to talk just a little bit more that time.
- 19:59He's loosening up a little bit now. Bench leading off, takes it low for a ball, two and two. Fidrich looks at the scoreboard to check the count. Nobody on or out here in the home half of the second. The pitch. Bench quirks one in the left and that's a base hit in front of the left fielder. The four gets it back. Now I tell you, Bench really hung out a rope.
- 20:21He should have. Jack, let's pause ten seconds for station identification. This is the CBS Radio Network. All American country. WTHI Terre Haute.
- 20:37Jack with Johnny Bench on first base is a guy who's a threat to power one out. Dave Kingman. He lets a high foul ball that will be caught by Rod Carew. The first pitch from Fidrich got him out and there's one gone. Kingman was a threat to make it four to nothing here, but it's still two to nothing as he fouls out.
- 20:53And Concepcion is the batter. Watch John McNamara coaching down at third base to see if we can pick up any of the signs, but it looks like they have nothing going. I happen to know the signs. Somebody squealed to me, Brent.
- 21:10That must have been baked McBuy. The Cardinals. No, no, I won't tell you anyhow. Bench is going. Swing and a base hit up the middle will send Bench on to third base without a play and it's first and third with one man out. Evidently I missed the sign.
- 21:24A hit run single by Concepcion. Bench goes to third. The pitcher Randy Jones is due to hits. Parky Anderson, the manager of the squad, talks to him. And Jones will bat for himself.
- 21:41Now there have been four hits by the National Leaguers, two in each inning and Fidrich isn't pulling anybody. It looks like they've been hitting his fastball. Exactly. Jackie has not been overpowered here tonight. One other thing about the young man. He's been rushing his pitches more than he normally does.
- 21:56I caught him against the Boston Red Sox one night up in Fenway Park and then I've seen him work in Tiger Stadium. And when he's at his best, he takes his time. He's more deliberate than he has been here so far.
- 22:07John McNamara coaching a third is talk to Jones and now he talks to Bench and we might see Jones bump the ball here to try to move the runner down to second without trying to squeeze Bench home from third, a throw to first and it's late.
- 22:23First and third with one man out here in the second inning. Concepcion is a threat to steal another throw and he's back. It was close. Fidrich evidently has a good move.
- 22:35Jones throws left and bats right. And there's a mixed up creature.
- 22:41Check on the runner, the pitcher on the way and Jones takes a strike. It gets away. Concepcion goes to second and Bench stays at third and that'll be a fastball.
- 22:53Second and third with one man out.
- 23:00It is a fastball. It popped right out of the glove of the catcher Thurman Munson.
- 23:06And now the infield is in and Jones swings and misses.
- 23:10And it's strike two. Fidrich could go for the strikeout here once the strikeout.
- 23:15Brett, Harrah, Rich and Carew all playing in. The pitch to Jones struck him out for the second out.
- 23:21The first strikeout for Fidrich and it's up to Pete Rose.
- 23:26See if they pitch to him or take their chances with Garvey.
- 23:32He rose, started the ballgame with a base hit. Which is not unusual for him.
- 23:37What an amazing performer Jack Buck. He has played at four different positions in all-star competition. Third, second and twice in the right and left.
- 23:44First pitch is a strike call as Fidrich got one over the outside corner down around the knees. Rose with a base hit could make it four to nothing.
- 23:52And Cepsio on the runner of second with fine speed. Here's the pitch. Pete swings, hits it to first.
- 23:58Carew to the pitcher covering. This will be not close and he's out. The inning is over.
- 24:02Carew to Fidrich and the inning is over and the National Leaguers get two hits and lead two.
- 24:07After two they lead the American League two to nothing.
- 24:13And we're back in Petron Stadium. Jones is running out to the mound.
- 24:17Jones prepared here to work his last inning. I guess the rules have always been that a pitcher can go but three innings unless we go extra innings.
- 24:25This is what they sang about in the Fiddler on the Roof tradition. They don't like the break from it.
- 24:31So we're going into the third inning with the National League leading two to nothing.
- 24:35They had another threat but left him on. And the American League will be anxious to get back in it at the expense of Randy Jones.
- 24:43And their pitcher is going to be lifted right here. That's the item we were talking about where you're going to have a pinch hitter.
- 24:48Looks like Al McCray coming out to bat for Mark Fidler.
- 24:51Al McCray of Kansas City will indeed be the hitter.
- 24:54Jackal, we've got a moment. I can remind everybody that the Summer Olympics begin Saturday, July 17th and CBS Radio Sports will be on the job with special broadcasts from Montreal and regular bulletins and all our sportscasts here on the CBS Radio Network.
- 25:07We've been joined in the booth tonight by Wynn Elliott who does such a great job for us on the weekends. He'll be headed up to Montreal. The fire reports out of there. I'll be going. Jim Kelly will be up there.
- 25:17Jack, you better jump away from the Cardinals and come up there for a week.
- 25:20We'll leave Wynn to handle that. He can put 30 minutes of coffee in a 15-minute show better than anybody I've ever heard.
- 25:28He can do that.
- 25:31The pinch hitter is going to be Al McCray, the Kansas City outfielder who is having a very fine season with the front-running Royals.
- 25:38A couple of these races in both divisions of both leagues have disintegrated a little bit.
- 25:45And the closest one involves Kansas City and Texas at the moment.
- 25:48And McCray has played a big part in the success of the Kansas City Royals. He'll be followed by LaFleur and then Carew.
- 25:56McCray is batting.347. Here's the swing and a miss. Strike one, former member of the Cincinnati Reds. Otherwise, I guess the Reds would have another player on the all-star.
- 26:06Randy Jones working his third inning. McCray batting for Pidrich.
- 26:11We're in the third. The National League leads 2-0. The pitch is coming and it's high and away. Pidrich worked two innings.
- 26:18And he allowed two runs.
- 26:22A total of four hits. McCray on a half swing hits it back to the pitcher. Jones gets it and flips it out as Garvey helped him.
- 26:30Jones was in an awkward throwing position. Somehow the left-handed pitcher just can't throw the ball to first base.
- 26:35I don't know if it was the fact he was left-handed or the fact he seemed to stumble on a seam out there on the artificial surface for just a moment.
- 26:42And indeed he did throw off balance.
- 26:45Pidrich worked two innings. He allowed two runs, four hits.
- 26:51He struck out one and he walked none. The batter is Ron LaFleur and he takes the ball.
- 27:00American League looking for a baserunner here in the third. The pitch is a fastball at the knees and a strike called. One ball, one strike.
- 27:14And the pitch. A little tap is fouled off to the left. And now Randy Jones is ahead on the count. One ball, two strikes.
- 27:23This hitter, Jack, has to be a great inspiration for a lot of people in America. Ron LaFleur spent some time in a prison in Michigan.
- 27:30He's come out and earlier this year he tore up the American League. He hit in 30 consecutive games.
- 27:34A swing and a miss and LaFleur missed the off-speed breaking ball.
- 27:39And down he goes for Jones' first strikeout of the night. And there are two men going.
- 27:49And Ron Carew bats with the bases empty.
- 27:53Jones works very, very rapidly. Throws a lot of strikes and he has a lot of fastball game.
- 27:59There's a breaking ball in there and a called strike one to Carew who grounded into a double play his first time up.
- 28:03Carew, for all of his accomplishments in the game, has done poorly in all-star competition.
- 28:08Breaks the bat and grounds the ball to Morgan. He waits for Jones to cover. He throws him out.
- 28:12And the inning is over. And Carew was very polite. He could have run over Randy Jones, but he didn't do so.
- 28:194-1 on the putout, down and ordered the American League. And after two and a half, two-nothing, National League.
- 28:24Campaign 76, the Democratic National Convention from Madison.
- 28:27And back here in Philadelphia with the national leading the American by a score of two to nothing, Jack Buck, the American League, has turned it over to a millionaire right-hander, Catfish Hunter.
- 28:35Catfish Hunter with a record of 10-8. And I guess Randy Jones will take a shower only as a formality.
- 28:41He earned the focus out there while pitching three innings, no runs, two hits, struck out one, walked one.
- 28:46He's one of the few people who can gain weight while he pitches out there. He works so easily.
- 28:51And by the way, he now has four consecutive scoreless innings as an all-star pitcher.
- 28:55And usually when a fellow is having a great year, Randy comes into an all-star game like this and doesn't do so well.
- 29:02But that was not the case with Randy Jones.
- 29:08Now we have the Catfish with a cheek full of tobacco out there getting ready to pitch to the National League and Steve Garvey in the home half of the third inning.
- 29:17What's the score you say? Well, the National League's on top, two to nothing.
- 29:20Got two in the first and a single by Rose, a triple by Garvey and a ball that bounced past Rusty Stobb and then an infield out by George Foster.
- 29:29Two to nothing for the National League as they bat Steve Garvey in his white home Dodger uniform with the blue helmet, blue trim, and the pitch from Catfish Hunter.
- 29:40And it's punted and it's fouled off to the left.
- 29:43Garvey trying to get on base, front of the ball foul. He'll be followed by Morgan and then Foster.
- 29:49The National League threatens to make it five in a row in front of a crowd of 61,000 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 29:58They had the first night all-star game here in Philadelphia right a few years back, 1943.
- 30:06Garvey pops it foul and there's a play for Rod Carew. He's under it and has it one yard.
- 30:16Garvey fouls out and Morgan comes up flying to right his first time, left-handed hitting.
- 30:23Jack you were talking about that night game. One of the big reasons why the Cincinnati Reds are leading the Dodgers by six full games.
- 30:32The pitch from Hunter is high and away, ball one. We have a Yankee battery now of Hunter and Thurman Munson.
- 30:43High and away to Morgan again. That's ball two. One of the best batting eyes in the business, Joe Morgan.
- 30:48Jack you were talking about that night game, the last all-star game. Of course here was 1952, rained out after five.
- 30:55Here the foul ball hit down into the seats off the bat of Joe Morgan. Two balls and the strike.
- 31:01They still have, talking about the American League, Brett at third, Harrods short, and Griff at first.
- 31:08Four and left, Lin in center field and Staub in right. With one out, Morgan swings and it's a base hit to the right of Bobby Griff.
- 31:16That's the fifth hit for the National League and Morgan, a base-stealing Brett, is on base with one out.
- 31:25National League had four hits off of Mark Fidleritz and Stunner.
- 31:29And now a base knock off Catfish Hunter and Foster is up. Drove in a run with a new field out, the opening inning.
- 31:37Foster has driven in 72 runs already this year for the Reds.
- 31:43They play him deep into the left. Right-handed batter, Brett near the line at third, throw to first, Morgan is back.
- 31:52He's being held by Rod Carew. Hunter looks over there. Morgan is not going and there's a foul by Foster.
- 32:02Line drive down into left field. Strike one, Morgan bluffed a break but didn't go.
- 32:10American Legion baseball is well represented. 35 former American Legion baseball players are on the rosters of the American League.
- 32:24Hunter checks Morgan. Not going and a five ball to deep left by Foster. Way back, Mike Go and go it by Holman.
- 32:34That makes it four to nothing. There's something about Foster and the way he hits that ball. When he gets into it, it just goes and goes and goes.
- 32:43That makes it four to nothing. And Catfish Hunter is big.
- 32:51Foster has driven in three of the four National League runs.
- 32:57He's a very heavy fat and when he hits that baseball, it just doesn't stop.
- 33:04The batter is Luzinski who really showed off during batting practice tonight. He must have hit ten out of here.
- 33:10Here's a high five ball to short left that will be caught by LeBlanc.
- 33:13The crowd got excited but the catch is made and there are two men out. Luzinski took a dead aim. Got it up in the air for the second half.
- 33:22You can do that against Catfish Hunter because of course he has marvelous control.
- 33:27He brings the pitch around the plate all the time so hitters like George Foster can stand in there and if they get the pitch they want they can power it up.
- 33:34And with two men out the batter is Johnny Bench. He fouls one away. Strike one and everybody's pumping on the first one.
- 33:40And in an all-star game like this, it's the truth that these pitchers won't be knocking people down or spinning their hands around.
- 33:46They can dig in a little more here. With two men out Bench swings and Hunter threw it by and Bench got a base hit his first time.
- 33:53We're in the home half of the third and it's four to nothing now.
- 33:59And the pitch. Bench fouls one away to stay alive. Oh and two.
- 34:04That home run by George Foster.
- 34:08It's typical of the home runs you get in this ballpark.
- 34:12There would have been an out in a good many other ballparks but not here. It carries Bench with two out. Makes a ball in the dirt.
- 34:19One ball two strikes.
- 34:26Hunter has been treated rudely in all-star competition. One ball two strikes and a foul by Bench.
- 34:32Back and out of play.
- 34:34And an all-star souvenir is a coveted item here.
- 34:39Great weather.
- 34:42Mesa's empty. Bench strikes out on a low pitch from Captain Hunter.
- 34:46Two runs on two hits. A home run by Foster after three.
- 34:50National League four. American League nothing.
- 34:53And back here in Philadelphia with the National League All-Stars leading the American by a score of four to nothing.
- 34:58Tom Seaver has come on now for the National League.
- 35:01Well if the American Lakers were complaining that Randy Jones didn't throw the ball hard enough for them to hit it.
- 35:06They've got all the fast balls they want right now. Maybe a little too much from Seaver.
- 35:10What about this for a high powered all-star battery. Tom Seaver and Johnny Menn.
- 35:15Jack it was interesting that the crowd here in Philadelphia booed when Bench went out the last time because they think their catcher Bob Boone deserves to be the all-star starter.
- 35:24And I guess they're trying a little early psychological warfare on Bench who probably will be back here in October in the playoffs.
- 35:31They want to get under his skin if they can.
- 35:33Listen there's some fans out in Los Angeles who want to agree with you right now.
- 35:36I know that.
- 35:38Bob Lemon who is the honorary captain with the American League is coaching his first base during this half inning.
- 35:43And Robin Roberts will coach down there during the next half inning.
- 35:46And we go into the top of the fourth with Tom Seaver on the mound and George Brett at the plate.
- 35:52The Kansas City third baseman.
- 35:55Hitting a lusty three sixty five drew a walk in the opening inning. A left handed batter in the pitch to him.
- 36:00Strike off. Brett is one of those people who plays the game with a tank full of enthusiasm.
- 36:08Malapet rose and others.
- 36:12First pitch a blistering fastball a called strike and now breaking ball low.
- 36:16One and one.
- 36:18Tom Seaver on the mound fourth inning for the nothing National League.
- 36:22American League has had two hits but they left both runners.
- 36:25Got a walk and hit into a double play.
- 36:27Brett leading off swing and didn't get the fastball.
- 36:31One and two a high fastball and Seaver blew it right by him.
- 36:37It will be Brett and Munson and Fred Lin.
- 36:41And the pitch from Seaver swing and a high fly ball into right will be caught by Dave Kingman.
- 36:47Big right fielder is under it and has it for the up.
- 36:50He's not the most graceful outfielder in the world but he made the catch one go.
- 36:56Earlier this season John Matlak a teammate who is also on this all-star team criticized Dave Kingman for not taking outfield practices.
- 37:03Shortly thereafter the Mets went on a tear. A long winning streak and Dave Kingman turned red hot with a bat.
- 37:08He didn't criticize him when Kingman was standing next to him with a bat in his hand.
- 37:14Munson is up with one out. The Yankee catcher hit into a force out his first time.
- 37:18A right handed batter and the pitch from Seaver on the way.
- 37:21A foul off to the right.
- 37:22Seaver relieved on Sunday and Johnny Bench was hit by that foul ball.
- 37:28Bench was hit by that foul ball and the turner comes out to check him out.
- 37:32Boy he's got a tough year for this man.
- 37:35And the Philadelphia fans are on him.
- 37:37I tell you they can just take a look at the scar on the top of his lip so little.
- 37:42The scar across his back from the operation that he had or some of the aches and ailments which have plagued him.
- 37:47I don't think they'd be doing him like that.
- 37:51Bench was really stunned on the right shoulder by that foul ball.
- 37:55We want booms for all of your fans here.
- 38:03One man out. One strike to count on Munson and Seaver gets ready to work again.
- 38:08His pitch is low with the ball.
- 38:11One ball, one strike to count.
- 38:13The bases empty for the American League.
- 38:19They trail 4-0 here in the fourth inning.
- 38:21And the pitch on the way.
- 38:24It's a low and away ball too.
- 38:32Seaver waits for the batter to get set again and brings it in.
- 38:36The Munson, the right handed batter, swinging a foul back to the right.
- 38:39Now to play in the upper deck here in Philadelphia.
- 38:43One ball, two strikes.
- 38:45Red Lin waiting to bat next to the American League.
- 38:48Olszczynski back near the track and left with Munson at the plate.
- 38:51He's popped eight home runs this year.
- 38:54Seaver kicks and fires.
- 38:56Munson swings and got a piece of it.
- 38:58Foul back to the screen.
- 39:00It's still 1-2.
- 39:04What a wonderful job the Philadelphia Phillies organization has done in hosting this
- 39:08all-star game.
- 39:10Everything has been top-rate.
- 39:14Pre-game activities here tonight ran like clockwork.
- 39:17Seaver brings it in and Munson swings and a high fly ball behind second.
- 39:21Concepcion, the shortstop, fades out, waits and has it two up.
- 39:25Two men gone.
- 39:27Munson was jammed and popped out.
- 39:31With two gone, Fred Lin takes a little while getting to the plate.
- 39:36We're Admiral McClinton.
- 39:39The U.S. Navy is here with us.
- 39:42I'll let him share the microphone while you talk to him.
- 39:45This all-star game has been dedicated to the U.S. Navy.
- 39:48It was interesting, Jack, to find out that the Navy was founded here in Philadelphia
- 39:52as Tom Seaver throws a ball inside to land in next.
- 39:55You have to be a Phillie fan, too.
- 39:57I have to tonight.
- 39:58I'm a National League fan from way back, Fred, so this is really a thrill for us.
- 40:01The Navy was founded back here on the 13th of October of 1775.
- 40:04Today we're almost 201 years old now.
- 40:06Tom Seaver throws another ball, and of course I know many of your Navy men
- 40:10are listening around the world on American Forces Radio.
- 40:12They are indeed, and they're just as thrilled as those of us who are here tonight.
- 40:15Here's Lin with a long one to ride, and it's all now Tom Seaver putting the American League on the board.
- 40:21Fred Lin, who has hit six for the Red Sox, really got into it,
- 40:25and two former Southern Cowboys athletes hooked up there,
- 40:28and Lin got the better of Tom Seaver.
- 40:30It's 4-1 now, and the fans like that because they love the action.
- 40:35They don't want to see a one-sided game here.
- 40:37And check out Magic the American League with like-minded Admiral Robert McClinton
- 40:40to sit right here for the rest of the game.
- 40:43What's the game here?
- 40:45It'll bring Toby Harrah to the plate.
- 40:48Harrah ground it out his first time up.
- 40:51So we've had a couple of home runs tonight, one by George Foster of the Reds,
- 40:55and one just now by Fred Lin, strike one call to Harrah.
- 41:00He's batting with two men out.
- 41:02Lin's home run hooks the American League on the board here in the fourth inning.
- 41:06Swing and a foul tipped, and that's strike two, and Seaver is quickly ahead of Harrah.
- 41:11Must be stopped on deck.
- 41:16Seaver is seemingly unperturbed by the home run caught by Fred Lin.
- 41:21Goes right back to work, and a swing and a foul keeps Harrah at the plate.
- 41:24Admiral, we like your hard-sightedness.
- 41:27You're getting more and more women involved in the U.S. Navy, including the Naval Academy.
- 41:32We have 81 ladies who entered just seven days ago, as a matter of fact, Jack,
- 41:35and they're well ensconced down to the Naval Academy, and apparently starting off very nicely.
- 41:39Harrah batting with two men out.
- 41:41Seaver pitches a swing and a pop fly, will be caught by the second baseman, Joe Morgan.
- 41:47One run on one hit, the Lin all run.
- 41:49He's going to the bottom of the fourth, and that's the league lead by the score of 4-1.
- 41:54Once in a while you find someone who knows what to do
- 42:00And that's someone you can talk to
- 42:04Once in a while you find someone who knows what to do
- 42:05Personal service, and that's special expertise in making the future secure.
- 42:10Your life, Underwriter. Only a phone call away.
- 42:13We all need someone to talk to once in a while
- 42:18Someone to tell our dreams to
- 42:20To help make those dreams come true
- 42:23Your life, Underwriter. Wants to see you smile
- 42:28That's certain special someone
- 42:30You're going to talk to once in a while
- 42:33A message from your National Association of White Underwriters.
- 42:36You imagine...
- 42:37Campaign 76, the Democratic National Convention.
- 42:42Philadelphia crowd came alive when they saw Larry Bow and Mike Schmidt head for the Wolf End to warm up along with Cesar Stadano of Houston.
- 42:50David Cunha will leave off, and the home half of the fourth will be followed by Kirsten Saehmann.
- 42:54And Saehmann is due to hit against Catfish Hunter.
- 42:58The score is 4-1.
- 43:00This is Brad Lynn's homer, he's put the American League on the board.
- 43:04And Kingman's Swingsman, and this is strike one.
- 43:07Kingman fouled out his first time, he possesses 30 home runs.
- 43:11The next point of view is the all-star break.
- 43:13He's ahead of Wilson, the National League record pace of swinging and infighting.
- 43:19And that strike two.
- 43:21He strikes out a lot, Kingman Doug.
- 43:23He throws the ball where he's swinging.
- 43:25He'll lose it for him.
- 43:27Outfield, deep to the left, and Hunter pitches.
- 43:31Swing, and that's a fan ball.
- 43:33And he struck him out. Second strikeout for Hunter.
- 43:36Brent, let the Admiral get a plug-in for Navy recruiting before we see what happens to Concepcion.
- 43:43This is a thrill for the Navy here tonight, Brent, I can tell you that.
- 43:46And the kind of people we see in the crowd like this are those we like to see come into the Navy.
- 43:51There are a lot of youngsters here who are our style tonight, I can tell you that.
- 43:54Admiral, thanks for dropping by.
- 43:55Pleasure to be here. Thank you.
- 43:57Dave Concepcion with a swing and a miss, strike one.
- 44:00Concepcion's single, his first time up, so he's trying for his second hit of the night.
- 44:05And he pops it into short left field.
- 44:07The floor broke back, now comes higher.
- 44:09He'll get there, and on the move he has it for the outs.
- 44:11Two men gone.
- 44:13Two men gone, and the batter will be Tom Siever, who bat for himself here in the fourth inning.
- 44:20We mentioned earlier that Catfish Hunter has been bopped around, and after previous innings,
- 44:26he had given up four runs and less than four innings in all-star competition.
- 44:30Siever can handle that bat, but against Hunter, why,
- 44:33he can say the odds were great of a base hit, and he takes a strike.
- 44:39National League has out hit the Americans, 6-3, and the National League leads 4-1, fourth innings.
- 44:45Why you not ask Mike Siever?
- 44:46He looks overmatched on that swing, strike two.
- 44:51Hunter, working in a hurry, needs a fresh chew of the back of his, strikes him out, the inning is over.
- 44:56Three strikeouts and two innings for Hunter, down and order of the National League,
- 44:59and after four, 4-1, the National League lead.
- 45:02And here's the all-star game with the National League leading the Americans, 4-1, Jack Buck.
- 45:06The crowd gave a rose in hand to Bob Boone, the Philadelphia catcher who has replaced Johnny Finch.
- 45:12And out on the outfield, I see a couple of changes.
- 45:14Siever Sabanio, who has gone into centerfield, and George Buster, switching over to right,
- 45:20which means that Dave Payne, one of the New York Mets, is coming out,
- 45:23and the new shortstop will be Larry Bowe of the Philadelphia Phillies, who will work alongside of Joe Morgan.
- 45:29Luke Rose and Steve Garvey still out there, and of course the pitcher is Tom Siever,
- 45:33and the left fielder, Greg Musinski of the Phillies.
- 45:38Well, we've got a moment here as Siever completes his warm-up to remind everybody
- 45:42that because we've had a lot of surprises in the tennis world,
- 45:45it should be signed U.S. Open coming up from Forest Hills.
- 45:48That begins on August 31st. CBS Radio Sports will bring you an exclusive outside report.
- 46:10Some changes for the National League, with Siever on the mound, Bob Boone,
- 46:14who takes over the Cancun Jetties, and he's batting in the number seven spot, replacing Kamen.
- 46:19They have Boa at shortstop, and he is batting eighth.
- 46:24And Sabanio's playing centerfield.
- 46:26Swing on this by Rusty Stopp, who starts the fifth inning of this game.
- 46:29George Buster has moved from centerfield to right, and Sabanio, of Houston, is taking over in center.
- 46:36And Sabanio is batting.
- 46:44He's got a single this first time. It's a foul now for strike two against his former teammate, Tom Siever.
- 46:49Payed attendance here tonight at 63,974, the third largest All-Star crowd ever,
- 46:56exceeded only in Cleveland in the years 1935 and 1954.
- 47:01A receipt of $772,000 taken in in this All-Star game in Philly.
- 47:07Stopp with a swing and a foul right over our head.
- 47:10He keeps the count one and two.
- 47:13I mean, right over my head, not over your head, perhaps, but mine.
- 47:17You need a souvenir, don't you? Tell them to hit it toward you.
- 47:21Take it over to one of the children.
- 47:23Stopp leading off with a base hit against Siever here in the fifth inning.
- 47:26And the American League, trailing by the score of 4-1, puts its leadoff man on for the second time in the game.
- 47:36You might see quite a few American League pitchers here tonight, particularly if they go for a pink hitter in this setting.
- 47:43And the American League does have a pitcher warming up right now.
- 47:51The batter is Bobby Gritch of Baltimore, swinging a miss, strike one.
- 47:59Four base hits for the visitors, the American League, as Perez, Cash, and Al Oliver head down to the National League hole for them to warm up.
- 48:08Here's a swing and a miss for strike two. Gritch down to the short his first time.
- 48:15And the fifth inning, and Stopp is leadoff with a hit.
- 48:17Garvey plays behind him in first base. Siever looks over there and pitches.
- 48:23Gritch took a half swing, held up ball one.
- 48:27One and two. County bench.
- 48:29Gave way to Bob Boone, who's behind the plate now.
- 48:32And Louis Teon, one with a counter. Seriously, I'm in.
- 48:36All of all.
- 48:38Stopp with the lead, Siever with the pitching.
- 48:41Gritch looks at it, going away.
- 48:46Nicky Rivers is on deck.
- 48:48There's no pinch hit for Catfish Hunter.
- 48:53Stopp with two hits in this game, leads away. Gritch hits it on the ground foul, and Rusty is now three to five in an all-star competition.
- 49:06You can get a good hit by this whether you're making batting practice in a regular season game or an all-star game or whatever, and Stopp can hit the ball.
- 49:15Gritch trying to follow it up with a base hit.
- 49:17Waits, swings, fouls it out of play. It's still two and two.
- 49:21We're in the fifth inning for the American League, the visiting team batting in the National League on top, four to one.
- 49:30He's scored two in the first.
- 49:31Singled by Rose, tripled by Garvey in a ground ball, and two in the third on the two-run home run by George Foster.
- 49:37Redland is giving the American League their only run.
- 49:39The pitch to Gritch. Swing and a double play ball.
- 49:41De Morgan has it. Over the short to Boa. Out for the first double play.
- 49:46Out of the top hop for Joe Morgan.
- 49:48This is an all-as-to-turf field except for the sliding hits, and that ball hit off the turf, off the dirt on the short hop to Morgan, but he stayed right with it, got it to Boa, and over to Garvey.
- 50:00And it was the second double play that Joe Morgan has started at second base.
- 50:03Back in the first inning, he fielded a ground ball by Rod Brew and doubled it for Rod LaFleur.
- 50:08A couple of double plays. One bailed out the starter, Randy Jones. This one helps Tom Seeger.
- 50:15And Mickey Rivers.
- 50:17The Yankee outfielder is at the plate batting left-handed and hitting for Cat 300.
- 50:23Rivers chokes up on the bat a bit and hits a foul, strike one.
- 50:29Rivers is batting three-ten.
- 50:32With a lot of his base hits of the infield variety, he can run.
- 50:37Two men out, nobody on. Seeger goes into a full wind-up. Here it comes and hits both.
- 50:44Well, Hunter, worth only two runs, two hits, struck out, three walk-nots.
- 50:55Rivers with two outs. Takes a strike from Seeger, looks at the umpire, doesn't believe it. One and two.
- 51:02Harry Wendelstedt is the man in blue behind the plate, Jerry Newdecker, Andy Olson, John Denkenshire,
- 51:10Satch Davidson, and Jim Evans, the other umpires.
- 51:14Seeger, with his swing, a foul by Rivers out of play to the left.
- 51:20Well, the American League put the leadoff man on base in this inning.
- 51:24The old double play followed.
- 51:26The National League has Rose, Boa, Morgan, and Garvey on the infield.
- 51:30The boom catching, the pitch is low from Seeger.
- 51:34Two and two. Zdinski's still playing. He's in left, the day he went center, and Foster in right.
- 51:42Seeger's 2-2 delivery. Struck him out on a high fastball.
- 51:46Seeger gets his first strikeout. No runs, one hit, a double play, nobody left.
- 51:50And after four and a half, four to one, National League.
- 51:57And Jack Baseball's year-long Most Minimal Moments campaign came to a climax here in Philadelphia today
- 52:03with the announcement earlier of Henry Aaron's 750th home run as the most memorable moment ever in baseball.
- 52:10And Babe Ruth as the most memorable personality.
- 52:13Bobby Thompson shot her around the world back in the 1951 National League playoffs
- 52:18for the Giants against the Dodgers. Met with second Aaron and both Thompson and Aaron.
- 52:23Bobby Thompson handles himself with a lot of grace and dignity.
- 52:28Hey, he reminds me a lot of Joe DiMaggio in this day and age.
- 52:32The charm that DiMaggio has, Thompson possesses the same.
- 52:37Wherever he goes, people eyeball him and enjoy seeing him.
- 52:42We have Louis T. I'm coming into the game here now.
- 52:45He's the third American League pitcher of the night.
- 52:47And he's a favorite over here because, well, I guess he doesn't get so old.
- 53:02Campaign 76, the Democratic National Convention at New York City's Madison Square Garden.
- 53:07I'm George Furman, CBS News, reporting on the CBS Radio Network.
- 53:11And just minutes ago, a moment of supreme, wholly understated drama.
- 53:15A man played briefly while a ramp was placed in the rostrum.
- 53:18And then Governor George Wallace of Alabama took the rostrum to speak out against government red tape.
- 53:23Discarding his glasses after a moment, he warmed to one of his favorite themes,
- 53:27bureaucrats and their briefcases, which he said ought all to be thrown in the Potomac, the briefcases, presumably.
- 53:33And then cheers, warm but very brief, for Governor George Wallace and a smiling wave from the governor and a kiss from his wife.
- 53:40And then George Wallace's farewell from all appearances from the stage of presidential politics.
- 53:45And the convention moved on to the next part of the platform now being presented by Bess Meyerson of New York City.
- 53:51That's it for the moment from the Democratic National Committee.
- 53:53I'm George Furman, CBS News.
- 53:56Jack, back here in Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, we see quite a few changes for the American League.
- 54:01Louis Teon is out there on the mound. It will be an all-Boston battery.
- 54:05His teammate Carl Fisk is joining him at shortstop.
- 54:08The manager of Baltimore, the outfield, Carl Jaskinski has gone out there to play now.
- 54:13And Mickey Rivers has moved in to right field.
- 54:15Lin will stay in center.
- 54:18Now we'll find out how they're batting for you folks as Louis Teon takes over as the third American League pitcher of the night.
- 54:26And I'm sure that the Latin American fans of American baseball get a kick out of the fact that Louis is into the game.
- 54:32This contest is being broadcasted in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic of Venezuela.
- 54:37And as we mentioned here on CBS and around the world, the American forces radio.
- 54:47Teon takes his warm-up classes.
- 54:51No scores of other games to give tonight's red as baseball has come to a standstill except for this all-star game.
- 54:57All of the eyes of the baseball world are on Veterans Stadium.
- 55:04The girls laid off against Teon against who only batted in the World Series last year.
- 55:09Louis spins pitches and a swing and a miss by Rhodes.
- 55:13He's won for two tonight, got a base hit in the opening inning, then ground it out.
- 55:18National League is on top, 4-1. We're in the home half of the fifth inning.
- 55:23Teon's next one is a curveball drilled in the right center for a base hit.
- 55:27If it might get in between, it does.
- 55:29It goes to the wall and Rhodes is going to get two.
- 55:32He's got a chance at him, head first, save the third.
- 55:36Steve Rose with a leadoff triple, beats Louis Teon in the fifth inning.
- 55:44And you knew he was going to try for three, Brent.
- 55:47What a remarkable performer Pete Rose is in a game that doesn't mean a thing, that head-first dive into third base.
- 55:55Here is Rose in an exhibition and who will ever forget back in 1971 down in Cincinnati
- 56:00when he barreled into Ray Fossey and he broke Fossey's collarbone with a winning run in that all-star game.
- 56:05The center owes to Canada to compete in the diving competition up there.
- 56:09Head-first slide in the third, the infield is in, the batter is Garvey who could increase the National League lead.
- 56:15Teon's pitch is a ball outside.
- 56:18Garvey is one for two, a three-base hit and a run batted in.
- 56:22They select the most valuable player in this game and George Foster has a leg up on that trophy with three RBIs tonight.
- 56:29Garvey waiting.
- 56:31The pitch is a strike ball with a breaking ball, Rose in third, nobody out.
- 56:37He'll make sure that the ball is beyond the infielders before he breaks for home on a ground ball.
- 56:43The right fielder, Mickey Rivers, is playing in a bit.
- 56:46Other outfielders deep in around to the left with Yaskromski in the left and Lin in the center.
- 56:51Garvey is jammed by a pitch ball to two and one.
- 56:55So we have Yaskromski in left, Lin still in center, Rivers in right.
- 57:00Still Brett at third but the line here is at short.
- 57:03Richard second base, Carrou at first, Carlton Fisk is catching.
- 57:08The pitch to Garvey with the runner at third is swinging a miss, two and two.
- 57:20Garvey trying to get the runner home.
- 57:23The official league leading, four to one, home half of the fifth inning, a leadoff triple by Pete Rose.
- 57:29His second hit of the night, Garvey calls time.
- 57:33One tobacco chewer has followed another here as Catfish Hunter gave way to Louis Teon.
- 57:39Mark Fidrich started the game.
- 57:41This is the third American League hurler.
- 57:43The pitch on the way and Garvey looks at a fastball, three and two.
- 57:49Fastball out and away from Garvey but he wouldn't chase it.
- 57:54Garvey's dad is here visiting from Florida.
- 58:03Lead by Rose and the pitch, swinging at a ground ball to third.
- 58:09Clear ball, fielded by Brett.
- 58:11He throws out at first, but Garvey's scooped in out of the dirt and Rose stayed at third.
- 58:16Jack, there were two nice fielding plays.
- 58:19George got down at third base, picking that up on the short bounce and then Rod Carew over first base with that scoop.
- 58:25There's a heck of a play by both as Brett had to battle with Pete Rose for a fielding room down there.
- 58:31And he took a swipe at Rose, tried to tag him to the ball, just missed him.
- 58:34Rose got back to third.
- 58:36And it's up to Morgan to get Pete home from third with one man up.
- 58:39Morgan has flied to right and single, the infield's still in.
- 58:43First one from T-Nav and Morgan swings and pops it out.
- 58:46That'll be the second out.
- 58:48Second baseman Bobby Gritch has it two-go on and it's smack up.
- 58:52And George Foster has already driven in three of the four national league runs.
- 58:57That's not like Joe Morgan, failed to get that runner home from third.
- 59:01That's twice now that Joe Morgan has failed to produce a runner from third base.
- 59:05Steve Garvey had the hole back in the first inning after tripling.
- 59:08Joe Morgan flied out to right field.
- 59:10Morgan got the game-winning hit in the World Series against Teon, but Teon got him this time.
- 59:16And of course he received three million votes.
- 59:18He was the most popular of the All-Stars, Joe Morgan of Cincinnati.
- 59:22Infield drops back now. Rose to third, two out, Foster the batter.
- 59:26George takes a swag, a good fastball call over the inside corner.
- 59:30Foster drawing it on with an infield out in the first and pops the two-run homer in the third inning.
- 59:35Teon wants to get him out and keep the American League in the game.
- 59:40Foster wants to pop another and widen the margin, take some of the drama out of this contest.
- 59:48A full windup by Louis, his pitch is high, and Carlton Fisk had to reach for that one.
- 59:53One ball, one strike.
- 59:55Now this game is dominated by Boston players with a batter of Teon and Fisk.
- 1:00:00With the Estrumski and Lynn in the outfield, the four of the nine are wearing the Red Sox uniform.
- 1:00:08One ball, one strike.
- 1:00:10George Foster waits and takes outside ball, too.
- 1:00:14And speaking of Boston, what's sad news this week of the death of Tommy Yawkey.
- 1:00:18What a marvelous man he was, the millionaire owner of the Boston Red Sox, one of the true sportsmen who stayed in baseball through the years.
- 1:00:27Loved his Boston Red Sox.
- 1:00:29Foster trying to get Rose home from third with two men out.
- 1:00:34The pitch from Luis Teon and a swing and a foul on a curveball, two and two.
- 1:00:39A leadoff triple by Rose, but he's still there with two out.
- 1:00:48Brett Musinski waits on deck, but for the moment it's a battle between Teon, who wants a new baseball, and George Foster.
- 1:00:55John McNamara, the San Diego manager, coaching the third.
- 1:00:59Andy Ozark, the Phillies skipper, coaching the first.
- 1:01:05Foster waiting. Fisk gives the sign.
- 1:01:09Teon looks at third at Pete Rose and goes to work.
- 1:01:13The pitch, swing and a smash to short.
- 1:01:16One hop-couple injury as it imposed.
- 1:01:18He's out, and Rose died at third base after the leadoff triple.
- 1:01:22Great pitching by Teon. No runs, one hit, one left.
- 1:01:25Three left for the National League, but after five they leave the American League 4-1.
- 1:01:30To me, a lot of car advertising sounds something like this.
- 1:01:34Mr. Average, tell us about your new car.
- 1:01:37In my own words, my new car is truly a great automobile.
- 1:01:44And I know who I am, and I believe that I'm always a car for the man who knows who I am.
- 1:01:53Well, America, we did it. We made a big car small and a small car big.
- 1:02:00Push aside the tons of car advertising, and of all the cars in the world,
- 1:02:04no test magazine, Subaru, Carline, or Deere.
- 1:02:08Maybe it's because only we have a four-wheel drive wagon,
- 1:02:11or because every Subaru has front-wheel drive, the CT engine,
- 1:02:15and a price tag that makes us an economy car for today's economy.
- 1:02:19At Subaru, we don't have to manufacture great things to say about our car,
- 1:02:24because we manufacture a great car.
- 1:02:26Test drive at Subaru, a true local Subaru dealer.
- 1:02:34At home or on the road, it's always a thrill to see that ball scale right out of the park.
- 1:02:37I'm Mike Schmiller of the Phillies, and I'm here to tell you how to drive in the winning run for your future in the Navy.
- 1:02:43Great training, a challenging job, travel, and some real adventure.
- 1:02:47That's the Navy lineup of opportunity.
- 1:02:49So get your high school diploma and join the Navy team.
- 1:02:52For more information, call your Navy recruiter toll-free at 800-841-8000.
- 1:03:00Nice gesture right now by Sparky Anderson, the manager of the National League, Jack.
- 1:03:05He has all five members of the Philadelphia Phillies on the field.
- 1:03:09As Dave Cash has come on to play second base, and Mike Schmidt will be at third.
- 1:03:13Lozinski at first stays in left. Boyd shortstop, Boone is the catcher.
- 1:03:17The new pitcher for the National League is going to be the count, John Matapisco, out of San Francisco.
- 1:03:23And out in right field, Al Oliver, the Pittsburgh Pirates, who right now is leading the National League in hitting.
- 1:03:29And the first baseman is Sparky Anderson's Tony Perez.
- 1:03:32He's in the sixth inning, it is 4-1, and the National League has dominated this game from beginning to end.
- 1:03:38You can hear the crowd reacting to the introduction of the other Phillies players.
- 1:03:49Here's the batting order now with numerous changes for the National League.
- 1:03:53Al Oliver is leading off, he's in right field.
- 1:03:55Dave Cash of the Phillies at second base, hitting second.
- 1:03:58Tony Perez of the Reds, playing first base and hitting third.
- 1:04:01Mike Schmidt of the Phillies in third base batting fourth.
- 1:04:04Lozinski is still in the game in left field.
- 1:04:07Cesar Cedeno is in center field and batting sixth.
- 1:04:10Bob Boone behind the plate of the Phillies, of course.
- 1:04:14Harry Ball of the Philadelphia Club is the shortstop batting eighth.
- 1:04:18And John Matapisco, another of the characters in baseball, becomes the third National League hurler of the night.
- 1:04:25Following Jones and Sieber to the mound, we're going into the sixth inning.
- 1:04:28The National League on top, and go to one of the American League.
- 1:04:32And Carl Hruszynski of the Boston Red Sox will step into the batter's box.
- 1:04:37He's had a marvelous career as an all-star performer out of the American League.
- 1:04:46Hruszynski at the plate for his first and bat.
- 1:04:52Carl batting 264, but he's a better hitter than that, is he not? And strike one is called from Matapisco, the tall right-hander.
- 1:05:02And Sieber worked two innings, allowed one run, two hits, struck out, one walk, none.
- 1:05:07Hruszynski, the left-handed batter, courts a foul back here, and that's strike two.
- 1:05:12Hruszynski will be followed by Carew and then George Brett.
- 1:05:17Philadelphia Phillies are represented now by Schmidt, Boah, Cash, and Boone, and Hruszynski.
- 1:05:25The pitch to Hruszynski, misses outside, ball one. Hruszynski leading off in the sixth inning.
- 1:05:32National League leading 4-1, two runs in the first, two in the third.
- 1:05:37Two runs in the third, an all-run by George Poston.
- 1:05:40Brett Lynn, home run for the American League. A ball to Hruszynski.
- 1:05:44Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:05:53Nobody on or out. The pitch, Matapisco pitches. Hruszynski hits it high in the air behind third.
- 1:05:58Fair ball, Boah out. Shortstop has it. Fair ball, good play.
- 1:06:02He covers some ground and all it is.
- 1:06:09Hruszynski pops to short to start it.
- 1:06:12And that in-league is such a thing to run with it, Brett. They have like split batting in the number nine spot with Matapisco hitting fourth.
- 1:06:23Jack again on that catch by Boah, the familiarity with the ballpark helped him.
- 1:06:27He knew exactly where that rail came in down there.
- 1:06:30And he knew that Hruszynski left field, if he left field he wouldn't bother.
- 1:06:35So there's one out and Rod Carew, 0 for 2, is that the play?
- 1:06:39A standard batter against Matapisco and a swing and a miss and Matapisco blew it by.
- 1:06:46Carew is a distinctive character boy can he hit.
- 1:06:50Five American League batting titles.
- 1:06:53Hitch goes low. Here you think about it.
- 1:06:56The size of his forearms is greater than the size of his biceps.
- 1:07:02That's where his hitting strength comes from.
- 1:07:05He takes it low for ball and he can bunk. Perez is cheating in a step.
- 1:07:10Cash is rather deep at second.
- 1:07:14American League needs some runners here.
- 1:07:17Couple of double plays at the four of them tonight.
- 1:07:19The pitch goes low inside, 3 and 1.
- 1:07:24Schmidt is in even with the base at third base to guard against the bunt.
- 1:07:28Carew the batter with George Brett on deck.
- 1:07:31The pitch is low and Carew draws a walk.
- 1:07:35Many a rally has been started with a base on ball.
- 1:07:39Well let's see what happens with Brett coming up.
- 1:07:41He has walked and he's 0 for 1.
- 1:07:44We're at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:07:47Andy Musser alongside. He'll be conducting the post game show here on CBS Radio.
- 1:07:52Brent Mussberger at the other microphone. I'm Jack Buck and we've had some action.
- 1:07:57Carew takes a good size lead.
- 1:07:59The pitch on the way. Brett swings and a long one to very deep center field.
- 1:08:03Sabina's going to get it.
- 1:08:04Way back near the track he has it and Carew returns to first.
- 1:08:08Brett hit it to the deepest part of the ballpark.
- 1:08:11High and out and two men gone.
- 1:08:16So it's back up to Carlton Fisk who's at the plate for his first time this year.
- 1:08:24He's one of the most dramatic home runs in the history of baseball during the World Series last year.
- 1:08:31Batting 255. He has nine home runs.
- 1:08:38Carew walked earlier and is at first with two outs.
- 1:08:41In the sixth inning now a throw to first and a late tag by Perez.
- 1:08:51Each club has used three pitchers.
- 1:08:53So has followed Randy Jones and Tom Siever to the hill.
- 1:08:56First pitch to Fisk is high and away.
- 1:09:06In time called is the plate umpire Harry Windelstedt sends a new ball to the mound.
- 1:09:11Another Cincinnati player.
- 1:09:14Ken Griffey is sufficiently warm. He comes in from the both end of the dugout.
- 1:09:18Soon as the lineup evidently pesky with a swing and a miss. One ball one strike.
- 1:09:26As much as Fisk is about as confident a guy as you'll ever encounter in baseball.
- 1:09:32And cocky might be a better word than confident but he backs it up.
- 1:09:37He can pitch.
- 1:09:40Took him a long time to get signed. He had to beg to be signed by professional baseball.
- 1:09:46Carew is running the pitchers low and Boone cannot make a throw.
- 1:09:50So Carew steals the base with two men out.
- 1:09:54Stolen base for Rod Carew.
- 1:09:56Now Yaskomsky can change his hitting tactics with two men out.
- 1:10:02Now he's gone to two balls and a strike to the Boston catcher.
- 1:10:09Schmitz deep behind the base at third. Bola playing a deep short.
- 1:10:13Here's the pitch and a high pop foul behind the plate. Boone has the play.
- 1:10:18Should end the inning. He has it. The inning is over.
- 1:10:21Fisk leaves the runner stranded. No runs, no hits. One left.
- 1:10:25There have been three left for the American League. They've been in the two double plays.
- 1:10:28Middle of the sixth inning. National League leading 4-1.
- 1:10:32And let's pause. Ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:10:35This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:10:38All American country.
- 1:10:41WTHI.
- 1:10:46Terrahoot.
- 1:10:48I came home one day, my wife says, remember when you turtle waxed the car.
- 1:10:52It still looks great. That part show stood up to everything.
- 1:10:56I said terrific. But how'd the car get in the dining room?
- 1:10:59She says easy. I took a left when I came out of the kitchen.
- 1:11:03Wax is a hot tub, isn't it?
- 1:11:07That turtle wax is so easy. I could polish my car faster than my girlfriend puts on her lipstick.
- 1:11:13But with her mouth, that takes half an hour.
- 1:11:17Wax goes on like that. Easy turtle wax.
- 1:11:22That turtle wax shine is so much like a mirror. Somebody could save their private life shadow every question.
- 1:11:27As a matter of fact, ladies and gents, speak up. I win.
- 1:11:31WTHI.
- 1:11:36The Lakewood Orchids.
- 1:11:41WTHI.
- 1:11:46The Democratic National Convention.
- 1:11:51George Verman reporting on the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:11:56And apparently we'll work late tonight, perhaps to midnight.
- 1:12:01We had Sharon Lovejoy tonight at a Carter raid. Mark Zwicker at the presence of Massachusetts delegates.
- 1:12:06If they didn't go along with Carter tomorrow night.
- 1:12:09They did say that if we did not want to go along with Carter, that we would be blacklisted.
- 1:12:13And that Governor Carter already did not like Massachusetts.
- 1:12:18And this could even further that division.
- 1:12:23Ezekiel told CBS News he's asked for an apology from the Carter people.
- 1:12:27Not from Carter himself, but perhaps from campaign manager Hamilton Jordan.
- 1:12:31They haven't been able to get any reaction from the Carter people yet.
- 1:12:34Meanwhile the platform goes on. That's it at the Democratic National Convention for now.
- 1:12:38I'm George Verman, CBS News.
- 1:12:41And here at CBS Radio, we're keeping you up to date with the all-star action as well as the Democratic Convention.
- 1:12:46Jack, you've got a couple of changes out there defensively.
- 1:12:49Only a couple in this half, Benny. The new third baseman, Don Money.
- 1:12:52The new second baseman, Phil Garner. Money of Milwaukee, Garner of Oakland.
- 1:12:55Luzinski leads off against Teon. Strike one, call it the knees.
- 1:12:59We're in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:13:01The National League is a home club and they're leading 4-1.
- 1:13:05Luzinski leads it off here.
- 1:13:08And takes the ball inside. He's 0-2.
- 1:13:15Cesar Cedeno waits on deck. Luzinski has played the entire game.
- 1:13:20And takes it along away. Ball 2.
- 1:13:23Luzinski is well up in the batter's box.
- 1:13:26He's rather close together. A short stroke, but he backs a wallop.
- 1:13:31Nobody on or out the pitch. From Luis Teon, a swing at a high, pop fly behind first.
- 1:13:36Near the foul line, Mike Jopper goes foul and caught by Carrell.
- 1:13:41By Carrell, who ran a mile for that one. I made a dandy play to retire.
- 1:13:44Greg Luzinski who's 0-3.
- 1:13:47Jack Phil Garner, the new second baseman, was over there.
- 1:13:50Of course, he was added to the team because of an injury to the Yankees' Willie Randolph.
- 1:13:55And Garner on that particular play was playing Luzinski to fall and he couldn't get there,
- 1:13:59but Carrell made the catch. 1-0.
- 1:14:02Now scoring off Teon thus far. Two runs charged to the starter, Midrich, and two to Catfish Hunter.
- 1:14:10Cesar Cedeno, heading for the first time tonight.
- 1:14:14And the fellow can do it all. You're supposed to say that about every member of both All-Star teams.
- 1:14:19Cedeno a right-handed batter against Teon. Swing! That misses strike one.
- 1:14:27Cedeno from the Dominican Republic, Luis Teon, native Cuban.
- 1:14:34He plays Cedeno to pull the ball.
- 1:14:37He's batting 2-97 and he has been torrid lately. Swing and a miss at a bad ball high. Strike two.
- 1:14:48Cedeno batting with one out in the sixth inning. The National League on top, 4-1 over the Americans.
- 1:14:55Cat Teon kicks, spins, and fires high with a breaking ball, one and two.
- 1:15:00Teon comes at you and every conceivable angle.
- 1:15:06He spins and kicks and flails his glove around and finally out comes the baseball.
- 1:15:11Now to Cedeno. High with a fastball, two and two.
- 1:15:16Jack, it's amazing that Luis Teon can pick up his target the way he turns his back on the catcher.
- 1:15:21So many of those people just concentrate all the time on that bit.
- 1:15:24I guess he can do it with his eyes closed.
- 1:15:26He's been around so long now.
- 1:15:28Cedeno calls time.
- 1:15:31Now back in and waiting.
- 1:15:34Batting with one out, nobody on base.
- 1:15:37Here it comes.
- 1:15:39He looks head and load.
- 1:15:40And a full count of three and two, and then I want Cedeno on base because he can run.
- 1:15:51Bob Bloom of the Phillies waits on Beck.
- 1:15:55Cedeno with a 3-2 count.
- 1:15:59Teon brings it to him, swing and a foul, and will do it again.
- 1:16:03The National League has out hit the American League, 7-4.
- 1:16:06The National League leading 4-1, George Foster of the Reds has driven in three of the runs for the leaders.
- 1:16:16Steve Garvey plated the other.
- 1:16:22Teon to Cedeno once more.
- 1:16:25Swing and a miss, he's struck him out.
- 1:16:29Down on strikes goes Cedeno, and that's five and a roll retired by the Boston right-hander.
- 1:16:34Here's a big hand for Bob Bloom.
- 1:16:37Put him out to a catch.
- 1:16:39Son of Ray Bloom, former American League insurer.
- 1:16:42Boom, what a year he's having, batting 3-0-9.
- 1:16:45He's driven in, 40 runs.
- 1:16:49Well, then only 20 runs all of last season.
- 1:16:54So he has found himself a fine defensive catcher also.
- 1:16:58Swing and a high, puff fly will end the inning.
- 1:17:00Who wants it?
- 1:17:01It's up to Blanger, down in order goes the National League, 1-2-3.
- 1:17:06And after six, National League four, American League one.
- 1:17:14The American League's offense is due up.
- 1:17:16That would be Lynn who hit that line drive home run into right field.
- 1:17:20It is 4-1 with the National League ahead.
- 1:17:22Jackie pointed out that Tim Griffey had been warming up down in right field.
- 1:17:26He has come in to play right field now without all of us pitching over the left.
- 1:17:30If one of the five fillies has come out, that would be Greg Lesinski.
- 1:17:33Lesinski was all for free while he was in there,
- 1:17:35and he has left after playing the first six innings.
- 1:17:38We're going into the seventh inning with Lonepisco on the mound for the National League club.
- 1:17:43Bob Bloom catching, Smith at third, Boa at short,
- 1:17:46Cash at second, first baseman is Tony Perez,
- 1:17:49Al Oliver in left, Sedanio in center, and Griffey in right.
- 1:17:54Looks like we'll have a pinch hitter in the setting.
- 1:17:56Fred Lynn will lead it off, and then Blanger and Teon is due to bat third.
- 1:17:59Tony Markham, a bullpen, is busy once again.
- 1:18:02Because, Jack, CBS radio sports are pleased to be here in Philadelphia
- 1:18:06covering this All-Star game, and then later this fall,
- 1:18:08we look ahead to the league championship playoffs and the World Series.
- 1:18:12They'll all be broadcast on radio exclusively over the CBS network.
- 1:18:16This is the start of a four-year contract with CBS radio and professional baseball.
- 1:18:21CBS radio will be broadcasting the All-Star game, the playoffs, and the World Series.
- 1:18:26We hope you're enjoying our broadcast this evening.
- 1:18:29Fred Musburger, Andy Musser, and Jack Buck from Betterton Stadium, Philadelphia.
- 1:18:33Ken Conner and McConniff, Lonepisco will take on the Rookie of the Year
- 1:18:37from last year in the American League.
- 1:18:39Fred Lynn, first pick to the left-handed batter, foul into the sixth straight line.
- 1:18:45Lynn has given the American League their only marker.
- 1:18:48After fouling out in the second, he founded a home run in the fourth inning.
- 1:18:52A home run tonight, one by Lynn, one by George Foster of the Reds in the National League.
- 1:18:57Lynn with a swing up out of the screen, strike two.
- 1:18:59What a sweet, lovely swing this guy.
- 1:19:02What a fine young athlete, and of course he is one of a handful of players
- 1:19:06who still has not yet signed a contract.
- 1:19:08It was troubled by that earlier this year with the Red Sox.
- 1:19:11Here's the ball outside to Lynn, and along those lines,
- 1:19:13a very important meeting will take place here tomorrow and put it off you.
- 1:19:17Agreement with the new proposal, which the players seem to think is okay.
- 1:19:21Here's a swing and a miss, and he struck him out.
- 1:19:24The ball in the dirt, and boom, tagged him in Montefiasko.
- 1:19:26Wisely reminded the catcher, Pagan, what she did, all the strikeout,
- 1:19:31and no hits against Montefiasko in an inning and a third.
- 1:19:35It started early here at the Reds, the National League is one corner off.
- 1:19:38They got two in the first, and not much going for the Americans.
- 1:19:42Right now, Jack, warming up for the American League is Frank Tanana
- 1:19:45for the California Angels. He's an outstanding left-hander.
- 1:19:48Some people tell me that he is the best left-hander in the game.
- 1:19:52Name all the others, Randy Jones, not like, whoever you want.
- 1:19:56Ballenger took a strike and now a ball.
- 1:19:58Mark Ballenger, the Orioles batting for the first time this evening,
- 1:20:01a right-handed hitter, they play him straight away.
- 1:20:04In the seventh inning, the American League cannot generate any offense.
- 1:20:07Breaking ball, he bailed out, but it went low.
- 1:20:10In balls and a strike.
- 1:20:12Ballenger batting 273.
- 1:20:14The Oriole Weaver is charging in Baltimore.
- 1:20:19Here he comes, slamming in a high up fly in a short right.
- 1:20:23Riffey comes in, gets there easily, and has it before the up.
- 1:20:27It seems to be the big question tomorrow.
- 1:20:29Can the owners agree in one very up session?
- 1:20:33I think some of the owners want more time to study this proposal
- 1:20:36that will be put on the table in front of them now.
- 1:20:40In fact, they've only been picking around a lot more than the owners have.
- 1:20:44They know a little bit more about it.
- 1:20:46At least they're approaching a compromise,
- 1:20:48and from what we have heard here in Philadelphia,
- 1:20:50it would bind each player to his cause for six years,
- 1:20:53and then one option here beyond that.
- 1:20:55What we don't know is whether or not players like Leonard who have not signed
- 1:20:58will be affected by the ruling,
- 1:21:00and all these things will have to be hammered out.
- 1:21:02At least finally we're close to an agreement
- 1:21:04and we can go back to concentrating on just baseball.
- 1:21:07The plate, the switch-hitting catcher of the Minnesota Twins,
- 1:21:10and he becomes the youngest player to ever play in an all-star game.
- 1:21:13Now what a fine young man and a great baseball talent he is,
- 1:21:16batting left-handed against Montefioreco with two men out.
- 1:21:21He is only 20 years old.
- 1:21:25He's quite a while away, about eight months away from his 21st birthday.
- 1:21:31And probably odds on at this moment to be the rookie of the year
- 1:21:34in the American League, Butch Weininger.
- 1:21:37Swinging on this, one ball, two strikes, as Montefioreco got by.
- 1:21:41Previously, Jerry Walker, who is now a scout for the Yankees, I believe,
- 1:21:45was the youngest player.
- 1:21:48That honor now belongs to Butch Weininger of the Twins.
- 1:21:51He looks at the ball down and in, two and two.
- 1:21:54Jack was walking that young pitcher with Baltimore.
- 1:21:57Right.
- 1:21:59He tuned around for a while and a hot shot for a while,
- 1:22:02but I think it's so hard to soundline him and he's with the Yankees now,
- 1:22:05scouting to two-pitch low from Montefioreco to Weininger.
- 1:22:09Win the seventh inning, two out, nobody on.
- 1:22:12National League four, American League one, as Weininger battles Montefioreco.
- 1:22:16Trying to get on base ahead of Phil Garner who's on deck.
- 1:22:19Swinging a foul keeps Weininger at the plate.
- 1:22:22Dean Mark, who's coaching at third base, is really proud of this youngster,
- 1:22:26one of his Minnesota twins.
- 1:22:31And when you meet him, glad it's yes sir or no sir,
- 1:22:34and if he plays, I certainly will.
- 1:22:37Here's Andy Young-Pillard.
- 1:22:40Weininger fouls another one off the mask of the catcher, Bob Booth.
- 1:22:47Booth catching.
- 1:22:50National League lineup dominated by Phillies now with Schmidt at third,
- 1:22:53Booth short, Cash at second base.
- 1:22:59Montefioreco's full count delivery.
- 1:23:02High and away and Weininger draws the walk.
- 1:23:05That's the second pass by Montefioreco.
- 1:23:09And it is the third walk given to the American League tonight.
- 1:23:14Double plays at this time of the night.
- 1:23:16They've left, they're running on with two out and Phil Garner,
- 1:23:19right-handed hitting second baseman, is at the plate.
- 1:23:23Garner is batting 257 with the Oakland A's.
- 1:23:29And batting for the first time tonight.
- 1:23:31Fouls run away, strike one.
- 1:23:37The action came early in this contest.
- 1:23:40Two runs in the first for the National League,
- 1:23:43two in the third on the George Foster homer.
- 1:23:48And the second by Lin came in the fourth inning for the only American League run.
- 1:23:54Weininger leads away at first and Garner fouls one away, strike two.
- 1:24:00Waiting on Dexter, bat next to Mickey Rivers.
- 1:24:05Jack Rickford is now warming up for the National League,
- 1:24:08the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher.
- 1:24:13First it was Randy Johns and Tom Sieber.
- 1:24:16Dexter on a swing and a miss and a high hard one and Garner strikes out.
- 1:24:20Second strike out in the inning for one of Dexter's two-pitch two-score descendants.
- 1:24:25A walk in one left, four-stranded for the Americans.
- 1:24:29At seventh inning, stretch time, National League four, American League one.
- 1:24:33To me, a lot of car advertising sounds something like this.
- 1:24:37Mr. Average, tell us about your new car.
- 1:24:41In my own words, my new car is truly a great automobile.
- 1:24:47The Javallero, I know who I am.
- 1:24:51And the Javallero is a car for the men most who I am.
- 1:24:56Well, America, we did it.
- 1:24:59We made a big car small and a small car big.
- 1:25:03Precious times of car advertising and all the cars in the world.
- 1:25:08The new test magazine, Subaru, car lining is here.
- 1:25:12Maybe it's because only we have a four-wheel drive wagon,
- 1:25:15or because every Subaru has front-wheel drive,
- 1:25:18the CT engine and a price tag makes us an economy car from today's economy.
- 1:25:24At Subaru, we don't have to manufacture great things to say about our car,
- 1:25:28because we manufacture a great car.
- 1:25:31Test drive at Subaru at your local Subaru dealer.
- 1:25:35Campaign 76, the Democratic National Convention.
- 1:25:38I'm George Berman reporting on the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:25:41That question of whether a Carter worker, Mark Zwicker,
- 1:25:44tried to lean on dissidents in the Massachusetts delegation
- 1:25:47and threatened them with some kind of blacklisting
- 1:25:50has drawn a reaction from the Carter people at last.
- 1:25:53And CBS's Sharon Lovejoy reports.
- 1:25:55I talked with Jody Powell, Carter's press secretary, just a few minutes ago.
- 1:25:59He said the remark was made by a student who jokingly said,
- 1:26:02you people better straighten up or you're going to be on Hamilton Jordan's blacklist.
- 1:26:06Powell said that the Carter staff regret the remark was taken seriously
- 1:26:10and has extended an apology.
- 1:26:12Pretty much what old Tom was here with that extra,
- 1:26:14and Carter has it too safely in the bag to invite trouble
- 1:26:17with any kind of strong-arm tactics at this point.
- 1:26:20Eleven more platform presenters to go on the floor,
- 1:26:22and the convention may disprove Chairman Robert Sprouse's prediction
- 1:26:26that we'd be out of here before midnight every night.
- 1:26:29That's it at the Democratic National Convention for now.
- 1:26:32George Herman, CBS News.
- 1:26:34And back in Philadelphia, we are coming into the bottom half
- 1:26:39of the seventh inning of this All-Star game
- 1:26:41with the National League leading the American 4-1.
- 1:26:43Jack Buck already has praised Frank Panana,
- 1:26:46and now we're going to get a chance to see him working.
- 1:26:48Jack Allen's shortstop is a remarkable story.
- 1:26:51Buddy Potek, only five for the smallest man ever to play on All-Star.
- 1:26:55That's one of the great things about baseball.
- 1:26:57It's great to be able to play this game.
- 1:26:59You don't have to be anything but talented.
- 1:27:02And he can do a lot of things.
- 1:27:04He's a strong little fella.
- 1:27:05He'll pull you when you look at him.
- 1:27:07He gave out one of the favorite quotes of all time, I think,
- 1:27:12when they asked him how it felt to be the shortest man in the big leagues.
- 1:27:16He said it's better than being the shortest man in the minor leagues.
- 1:27:19And Potek has taken over a short batting six,
- 1:27:22and Frank Panana, a talented left-hander,
- 1:27:25follows Luis Tion to the mound.
- 1:27:27Luis gave up only one hit, no runs in two innings,
- 1:27:30struck out one walk none.
- 1:27:32And Frank Panana, a California left-hander,
- 1:27:37comes into the game to pitch to the National League in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:27:40It's been a while since we've had any action.
- 1:27:42We had Larry Bullock, and his first at bat will try to get something going.
- 1:27:47He'll be followed by Mike Smith, and then Al Ho.
- 1:27:55So we have Don Money at third base,
- 1:28:01Freddy Potek at short for the American League,
- 1:28:03Bill Garner at second base,
- 1:28:05and Rod Carell, who's played all the way at first,
- 1:28:07called the fist behind the plate with Frank Panana on the mound,
- 1:28:10and Krumski on the left,
- 1:28:12and Loonan Center in the right through those Mickey Rivers.
- 1:28:14Larry Bullock, no leader off,
- 1:28:18switch hitting shortstop with the Phillies,
- 1:28:20that's right-handed against Panana.
- 1:28:23Hold on, the National League leading here in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:28:27Not much action lately.
- 1:28:29Here's the pitch, followed away.
- 1:28:31It seemed when DeRose let off with a three-base hit in the fifth
- 1:28:34and Bill to score, that might pick up things for the American League,
- 1:28:38but they didn't cash in on the psychological lift.
- 1:28:42And here's the next one, DeBoer, inside for the ball.
- 1:28:49Larry likes to bunt the ball.
- 1:28:51Money knows him well, having played with the Phillies,
- 1:28:54but still he's rather deep behind third.
- 1:28:57He steps behind the base, the pitch, breaking ball low,
- 1:29:02ball two, to the north.
- 1:29:05And DeBoer whoops him over, a good batting eye, draws a lot of walks.
- 1:29:10The crowd will come alive when Schwick comes to the plate,
- 1:29:13the big home run threat.
- 1:29:15Here's a foul by Boy, and it is two and two.
- 1:29:20A lot of baseball scouts tell me that Panana might be the best left-hander in the game.
- 1:29:30Ball leading off here in the home half of the seventh inning,
- 1:29:33four to one, National League.
- 1:29:35The pitch, curve, in the dirt, ball three, three and two.
- 1:29:39And going forward, both clubhouses tonight took hands with each of the players individually
- 1:29:44and they have some of the quotes of the conversations which took place
- 1:29:49between the president and the players, and Brent will select some of the hotter items for you.
- 1:29:54There's a five-ball into right, chase by Rivers, and he catches up with it and holds it in.
- 1:29:59Looks like that ball might get down, the Rivers can run.
- 1:30:02Full across the outfield, a retired ball, and here's Mike Schmidt.
- 1:30:09Any of those conversations strike you, Brent?
- 1:30:12He walked up to Robin Roberts in the National League locker room, Robin of course the honorary captain.
- 1:30:16He said, how many games did you win, 240?
- 1:30:19And Roberts told the president, 286.
- 1:30:22The president then was blushing slightly and said, I should have known.
- 1:30:25So one of his advisors didn't get the right figure there.
- 1:30:28Mike Schmidt is at the plate, the slugging third baseman of the Phillies, right-handed batter, ball one is high.
- 1:30:36That's while it really gets into the ball with a short scope.
- 1:30:40It flies off his bat when he makes contact.
- 1:30:43He's got 22 home runs, driven in 60.
- 1:30:47And the pitch, right call, and then I got one in on him.
- 1:30:53Schmidt, Dayton, Ohio, Ohio University.
- 1:30:58Here's an Atkins, Ohio.
- 1:31:00One ball, one strike, the pitch and a ground ball, the short contact scoops and throws.
- 1:31:05He is out at first base.
- 1:31:07That was an example of a shortstop being able to play very deep on this curve and handle a hard-hit ball.
- 1:31:13Schmidt has retired and Oliver bats for the first time.
- 1:31:16I think Bob Blake has just summed up that conversation between President Ford and Robin Roberts.
- 1:31:21He said that a Michigan man would never give a Michigan state man full credit, and that's still true.
- 1:31:26Robin, of course, an outstanding smart man, made it to the President's place in football at Michigan.
- 1:31:31Here's a solid hitter, Al Oliver, the center fielder of the Pirates.
- 1:31:35Hits one on the ground to the right side.
- 1:31:37The pitcher covers, takes it from Carew, and Kanana sets them down.
- 1:31:41One, two, three, and not much action lately after seven.
- 1:31:44National League Four, American League One.
- 1:31:47At last, Meece brings you fine liberty since you can toss in the washer and dryer.
- 1:31:50You choose the style three-piece trio, a suit with an extra pair of contrasting slacks or three-piece vest and pay just $77.

- 1:32:08Choose the style three-piece trio or three-piece vest and pay just $77 at Meece, downtown Plaza North in Looney Creek.
- 1:32:16A good plumbing contractor is as much a guardian of your health as your doctor.
- 1:32:20Why? Because improper plumbing installations made by unqualified persons can lead to expensive corrections and even serious illness.
- 1:32:29Whenever your home needs some plumbing repairs, remember to call one of the plumbing pros.
- 1:32:34They're trained and licensed to work to standard and quality only learned through years of apprenticeship and public health education.
- 1:32:41The Piping Industry Fund suggests that you get the bill, your plumber. Be sure he's qualified to work for you.
- 1:32:47We're prepared to start the eighth inning and here's the fourth pitcher for the National League, Rick Rosen who's out there and he'll be backed up by his own shortstop.
- 1:33:12The whistle of the Dodgers. Boone continues to be the National League catcher.
- 1:33:17Tony Perez is over there at first, Dave Cash at second, Mike Schmidt is in the third baseman and in the outfield from left to right we have Al Oliver of the Pirates,
- 1:33:24Cesar Cervano of Houston and Ken Zippy of Cincinnati over in right field and we've got Mickey Rivers and Carl Yostromski waiting to take on Roden.
- 1:33:34Jack, as you pointed out, it's been very quiet. The American League's got to get something going.
- 1:33:38Well, it's been Randy Jones, Tom Siever and John Manufusco and now it's Rick Roden, the undefeated Dodger right-hander with a record of 8-0 and they'll see some smoke now in the minor innings.
- 1:33:50We're going into the eighth inning with the National League on top, 4-1 and Roden, R-H-O-D-E-N, can throw as hard as anybody in baseball.
- 1:33:58And he's the pitcher to work against the American League here in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:34:02The muscle of the Dodgers takes over at shortstop and he's batting in the number four spot, just vacated by Manufusco.
- 1:34:10Manufusco pitched two innings and allowed it. No runs, no hits. He's banned three.
- 1:34:20He's banned two and he walked two. And Roden is the fourth pitcher on the home side.
- 1:34:26It's Tom Siever, Manufusco and Roden. So each club has used four hitters. Nicky Rivers leads it off and it's only a bat in this game.
- 1:34:34Trying to get something generated for the American League. They need some baserunners.
- 1:34:39Roden, the big right-hander, goes to work and it's high away for a ball.
- 1:34:44The Dodgers have brought Roden along rather slowly to the point now where he is a very, very effective hitter.
- 1:34:52As witnesses record of eight, no. Rivers with a foul to the screen evens the count. One ball, one spade.
- 1:35:05Rick Roden, he's from Florida. Six-four, 200 pounder.
- 1:35:13Broken in 71 with a ton of beach, been with the Dodgers system throughout.
- 1:35:18Nicky Rivers takes a strike call on the outside corner. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:35:25Rivers will be followed by Jaskromski and then Rod Carew. Carew is one of the few who has played the entire game to this point.
- 1:35:33Nicky jumps back. Ball two, two and two. Roden's got that good size like Don Drysdale.
- 1:35:40And he uses it. He'll intimidate those hitters. He'll move them off the plate.
- 1:35:45Not very polite out there. We're in the eighth inning, nobody on or out.
- 1:35:51They play Rivers to hit the left, the pitch on the way and a high foul backing out of play.
- 1:35:58Leads the leadoff man up there.
- 1:36:02Rivers is one of the additions to the Yankees, which made them, at this point, runaway leaders in the American League East.
- 1:36:12Tony Priman warms up now for the National League.
- 1:36:17Cage Roden gets into trouble.
- 1:36:21Two balls, two strikes. Right-hander pitches to Nicky Rivers and a swing and a chopper to the mound.
- 1:36:27He'll beat it out. Roden throws to Hayden and Rivers streaks down the line.
- 1:36:32I had a stopwatch on him, right?
- 1:36:36I got him in 3-9 going down there and he'd beat that way easily.
- 1:36:43And he has helped change the image of the New York Yankees completely.
- 1:36:46When they used to dominate, of course, they hit all of those home runs.
- 1:36:49And now they've worked together a couple of singles and sacrificed and stolen base into one of his rivers.
- 1:36:54And he's added that great dimension speed.
- 1:36:56The old Baltimore chop, Nicky Rivers on his first base. Leading off here in the eighth inning.
- 1:37:01What an excitement. R. Yostemsky, 0-1 in the game at the plate against Rick Roden.
- 1:37:06Roden fielded that ball, hit by Rivers, and might be doing some running here despite the score.
- 1:37:12Here's a strike call, the ads on the outside corner. Roden made a play, but much too late at first base.
- 1:37:18Now the infield of Schmidt, Russell, Cash, and Perez is holding against the runner, but for the double play.
- 1:37:25Throw to first, the runner back. The National League has pulled off two twin killings tonight.
- 1:37:32We have Oliver on left, Cedeno in center, and Griffey in right. A throw to first base and nothing to it.
- 1:37:41And that ain't getting late for the American League and Harold Johnson outside to Yostemsky.
- 1:37:52One ball, one strike. The visitors now have five hits.
- 1:38:00On a home run by Fred Lind for their only run. The National League has seven hits.
- 1:38:05Rivers, a big lead. Throw over there, he's back in time.
- 1:38:16Lead off infield hit by Rivers, a shorter lead now. The pitch, Yostemsky, swing and a miss.
- 1:38:22One and two.
- 1:38:31Rick Roden following Randy Jones, who stands to be the winner if it stays as is.
- 1:38:36Then Tom Seaver, Montefiusco, and now Roden here in the eighth.
- 1:38:40The pitch, Yostemsky hits a double play ball to catch. Over to second out and on to first out.
- 1:38:47Bill Russell was almost taken out of the play by Mickey Rivers, but he continued on with the throw.
- 1:38:52And that's the third D.P. tonight. And again, that was the speed of Rivers.
- 1:38:57I don't think Russell anticipated Mickey being down on top of him as quickly as he was.
- 1:39:02Rivers sliding a bit to his right to get out of the way.
- 1:39:05So he was playing tough baseball and trying to break that up in an all-star game.
- 1:39:09Today, a lesser shortstop would not have been able to get out of the way.
- 1:39:12But Russell was able to avoid the sliding Rivers and complete the double play in the third of the night for the National League.
- 1:39:19And Carew has to bat with the bases empty.
- 1:39:22High for ball one, so earlier Carew hit into a double play.
- 1:39:28And Bobby Gritch hit into a D.P. and now Yostemsky has the honor.
- 1:39:33Bases empty, two out, Carew with a high foul. Out of play, one ball on strike.
- 1:39:4263,974 watching the action. Better than the stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:39:56Carew with the bases empty and a 1-1 count. Swings and hits a foul back and out of play.
- 1:40:01We have a quote from Mark Fidrick who started for the American League.
- 1:40:05He said, I don't know what happened. I was up for the game, felt good, wanted to throw good.
- 1:40:09It's hard to believe I'm here. Wow, I can't believe I'm here.
- 1:40:12It's a great honor. All my friends got to see me.
- 1:40:15So I'll give up a couple of runs. Stands to be the loser, unless it changes.
- 1:40:21Carew battling to get on with two men out. Rick Roden pitches.
- 1:40:25High with a blistering fastball, two and two. Looks like he's throwing harder than anybody here tonight.
- 1:40:35Down money in the on-deck circle.
- 1:40:40The pitch to Carew is high.
- 1:40:44Carew is all for two with a walk and a stolen base.
- 1:40:47Else hasn't done well in all-star game.
- 1:40:53A full count from Rick Roden.
- 1:40:57Carew with a bat right down on the end waiting.
- 1:41:00Here it comes and a shot into left center field.
- 1:41:03On the run is the left fielder Oliver and he has it for the out.
- 1:41:06Some money will lead off in the night. A hard hit ball but out.
- 1:41:10Now runs one hit, a double play and nobody left.
- 1:41:13So the American League is in in a three-double play and is in left four.
- 1:41:16Bottom of the eighth, National League four, American League one.
- 1:41:20Castle towers shrouded with mist.
- 1:41:23Streets that knew Napoleon's troops.
- 1:41:26Echoes of the Chauvinist waltz.
- 1:41:28Towns that were old when the pilgrims sailed.
- 1:41:31Here in Europe you'll find Kelly Springfield radial tires proving themselves on the now winding cobblestone streets or the punishing Autobahn.
- 1:41:40Kelly Springfield tires have won over Europe's drivers with their new round all-weather performance.
- 1:41:46In 76 countries on five continents, Kelly Springfield tires are quality leaders.
- 1:41:52Now in America, Kelly Springfield announces an incredible new tire cord, Aramid Plus, as strong as steel with less weight.
- 1:42:00Tire cord is one of the many factors that affect performance, quality and strength.
- 1:42:05Put this fiber on a radial tire and have a ride smoother than a steel-belted radial tire.
- 1:42:10Aramid Plus, a step ahead of steel.
- 1:42:13Kelly Springfield, tires that make a world of difference.
- 1:42:19Campaign 76, the Democratic National Convention.
- 1:42:24George Herman, CBS News, reporting on the CBS radio network.
- 1:42:28The speaker for the platform at the moment is Coretta King, the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King.
- 1:42:33And she reminded the delegates that in 200 years we've come a long, long way,
- 1:42:38but she added, as anyone who was black knows, we still have a long, long way to go.
- 1:42:43And now she's talking more about the progress of 200 years.
- 1:42:47Against this fragile background, with the most careful and cautious consideration of the language they would use,
- 1:42:59they found it impossible to declare the logic of their decision.
- 1:43:04And she will end by asking the party, its people and its leaders to assert with bravery, love and passion for justice
- 1:43:10that the nation must rise up and live out the meaning of its creed.
- 1:43:13That's it at the Democratic National Convention. This is George Herman, CBS News.
- 1:43:19And here in Philadelphia, the All-Star Game, it is the pitchers who have taken charge.
- 1:43:24The last run was scored back in the top of the fourth when Fred Lynn powered a home run for the American League.
- 1:43:30The only run and the score right now, Jack Buck 4-1, and it's been all matched in the league except for that one.
- 1:43:36Only a total of four picks in the game, seven by the National League, five by the Americans,
- 1:43:42Frank Sinanah of the Angels will try to prevent the National League from scoring here,
- 1:43:47with Dave Cash leading off in the eighth inning to give his American Leagueers the chance of things in the night.
- 1:43:52Oh, one inside to Dave Cash.
- 1:43:56A right-handed batter who crowds the plate and ordinarily hits the ball to the opposite field.
- 1:44:00He'll be followed by Tony Perez.
- 1:44:03And then a six to seven, sets him down in order, and throws inside ball two.
- 1:44:08Jack, this is my first opportunity to see a baseball game in Philadelphia.
- 1:44:12I must say that the message boards here keep the fans well informed.
- 1:44:16Who's warming up in the bullpen? They've got the lineups, they've got the up-to-date average of everybody.
- 1:44:20It's a pleasure to watch baseball here.
- 1:44:22As they come to the ballpark, you won't miss a thing here in Philadelphia
- 1:44:26and most of the modern ballparks around the country.
- 1:44:30Cash followed on the way, two balls and a strike to count.
- 1:44:37From the honor out is Dave Cash, choked up on the bat handle, rips it in the left for a base hit.
- 1:44:42A leadoff single here in the eighth inning by Dave Price, and it gives the Philadelphia fans a chance to cheer.
- 1:44:49Roz Lewinsky did nothing, and Cole is retired, Moon is retired, Cash gets a base hit.
- 1:44:59And Tony Perez is the batter.
- 1:45:02Tony is batting for the first time tonight, the big RBI man of the, one of the big RBI men of the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:45:09Cash can run, but doesn't try to steal very often, draws a throw, and he is back in time.
- 1:45:17At this point, this is the lowest scoring All-Star game since 1968.
- 1:45:25Cash with the lead, and Anna Jackson pitches. Perez takes it high and away, ball on.
- 1:45:31John McNamara coaching at third base, Danny Ozark, the first base coach for the National League.
- 1:45:39They're in good shape, batting in the bottom of the eighth, leading 4-1 over the American League.
- 1:45:45Monique Patek garnered, the crew looking for the double play ball, disc behind the plate is given the sign.
- 1:45:52And Anna brings it in, and a foul to the screen, one ball, one strike.
- 1:45:57Wally Fingler's warm hook to the American League, Woody Freiman warmed up earlier for the National League.
- 1:46:0663,974, almost 64,000 in attendance here in Philadelphia.
- 1:46:16Cash draws another throw and gets back in time.
- 1:46:19Frank Tanana, he followed, Mark Fidrich, Catfish Hunter, Louis Tion to the mound, Fidrich gave up two, Hunter gave up two.
- 1:46:31The fish is low for a ball to Tony Perez.
- 1:46:36Not many squawks with the plate umpire Aaron Mendelstam tonight, no tough calls for the base umpires or the power line umpires.
- 1:46:44Money near the line at third, lead off single by Dave Cash.
- 1:46:53And Perez, waiting at the plate in the power stance of his, takes a breaking ball in the dirt and a snap throw to first by Fiske, who made a good play on the ball.
- 1:47:03Check the second base umpire Andy Olson has an interesting background.
- 1:47:06He was a minor league pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, putting it in the left hand and then he came down with a sore arm.
- 1:47:11Andy and I went to Al Somers umpire in school together back down in the late 50s and look what's happened to him.
- 1:47:18And to you.
- 1:47:19Bob Bragg just off in the Asceta Glacier.
- 1:47:21Here's the flip to Perez, a foul to the screen and makes it a full count of three and two.
- 1:47:28And it's our guess that Dave Cash will be off and running your first base.
- 1:47:33The rule holds against Cash.
- 1:47:36Outfield, deep to the left for Tony Perez.
- 1:47:39Batting here in the home half of the eighth inning.
- 1:47:41Four to one, Nashville League.
- 1:47:43Cash is running, ball four, puts him in on base and nobody out.
- 1:47:48And that's the fourth walk given to the Nashville League tonight to go with their eight hits.
- 1:47:53And the batter is Bill Russell.
- 1:47:55One thing about Russell, he's come together in the double play so this is going to be a tough game.
- 1:48:00One thing about Russell, he's come together in the double play so this might be a score I'm getting for the Nashville League.
- 1:48:12Russell batting at three on nine.
- 1:48:16He's at the plate for the first time this inning.
- 1:48:18Wearing that white Dodger home uniform.
- 1:48:22The American League players tonight are wearing their road uniforms.
- 1:48:24The Nashville League players are wearing their own individual farm uniforms.
- 1:48:29Russell takes a strike call.
- 1:48:32I guess in some ball games this situation would call for a front.
- 1:48:37Russell banged in an all-star game.
- 1:48:40Sparky Anderson is not going to ask him to do that.
- 1:48:43Give him a chance to swing.
- 1:48:45Ball one from Kananen.
- 1:48:47Fingers in the bullpen for the American League.
- 1:48:50The pitch curve is rounded to money.
- 1:48:53Grads it, throws to second out and over to first and they got them both.
- 1:48:56Cash goes to third and he's there with two outs.
- 1:48:58So the American League comes up with a double play on their own.
- 1:49:01Five-four-three and Darnagher with that ball in a big hurry down there at second base.
- 1:49:06Cash went off with the single and got third with two outs.
- 1:49:11And one of the fastest men in the game, Ken Griffey, at the reds.
- 1:49:16That's for the first time.
- 1:49:18Here's a fellow having a great year.
- 1:49:23As are most members of that Cincinnati club, Griffey's batting 340.
- 1:49:29He'll feel back with two outs, strike one call from Kananen.
- 1:49:34A good many of Griffey's hits are the infield variety because of his great running speed.
- 1:49:39They play him to hit the left field.
- 1:49:42He is from the
- 1:49:43Denora, Pennsylvania.
- 1:49:48They'll almost stand the man.
- 1:49:53Cash at third.
- 1:49:57Oh wind up by the tall left-hander.
- 1:49:59And in a picture, the curve is fouled.
- 1:50:02And that's strike two.
- 1:50:07The night's inning for the American League and they're trailing right now 40-50.
- 1:50:12Money will lead it off and then Fisk and then Fred Lynn.
- 1:50:19And an L-dine check with only five hits thus far.
- 1:50:24Nationally trying to win their fifth in a row, the pitch to Griffey.
- 1:50:28Low and away.
- 1:50:30One and two.
- 1:50:33Savino is in the on deck circle.
- 1:50:40Here's another pitch with Cash at third and two outs.
- 1:50:44Fastball hit on the ground, base hit.
- 1:50:47And it's five to one nationally.
- 1:50:49First scoring since the fourth inning.
- 1:50:52Griffey didn't get around on a fastball but hit a hard to the left of the shortstop Freddie Potts.
- 1:50:58And in the score is Dave Cash making it five to one nationally.
- 1:51:04Griffey drives in a run.
- 1:51:06Foster is driven in three, driving with the other RBI.
- 1:51:11And Savino, a strikeout victim his first time in bat, appears at the plate again.
- 1:51:20Griffey on it first two outs.
- 1:51:23So a run against Tenana.
- 1:51:28First one to Savino inside ball.
- 1:51:31Hidrich gave up two runs, 102 runs.
- 1:51:34Now one is charged to the California left hander.
- 1:51:38Jack you watch Cesar Savino play with Houston here in an all-star game and physically he's got everything that a ball player has to have.
- 1:51:46If he would concentrate as hard as somebody like a Willie Mays or a Stan Musial did, he would be one of the all-time greats.
- 1:51:53Here's the pitch to Savino. It's a strike call.
- 1:51:56He's young yet and he has ample opportunity to put it all together but you're right.
- 1:52:00He's about as talented as anybody who ever played the game.
- 1:52:04One ball, one strike to Cesar.
- 1:52:09On the first base is Griffey.
- 1:52:12He won't be going anywhere early.
- 1:52:14He'll let Savino handle the situation.
- 1:52:17High with a fast ball, ball two.
- 1:52:20I don't know if we mentioned the Popsville Pennsylvania High School Band before they came.
- 1:52:26We wanted to give them a mention because they did a good job.
- 1:52:33Runner at first, two outs.
- 1:52:37Caru holds against Griffey.
- 1:52:40Pitch to Savino, high outside. Ball three, three, one.
- 1:52:46While Pogba was waiting on deck, might get a chance to get it.
- 1:52:52Five to one now. The National League is scored here in the eighth inning.
- 1:52:56They've led all the way and they're on top five, one.
- 1:52:59And then a call's time, stepped off the rubber.
- 1:53:05These players will all go home with mementos.
- 1:53:10All-star ring from Val Flora plus gifts that they are allowed to select.
- 1:53:18And they've had a good time.
- 1:53:21All except the American League on the field here tonight.
- 1:53:24Savino pulls one foul past third and it's three and two and Griffey will go with the next delivery.
- 1:53:30What do you think the MVP of this game is going to be, Brent?
- 1:53:36I guess Costco.
- 1:53:38Costco with the three out of the eyes, Jack.
- 1:53:40All the way a two on over and a three run batted in evening.
- 1:53:44You can't overlook Randy Jones though.
- 1:53:46He puts three very strong innings off the top.
- 1:53:48In fact, all the pitchers of the National League have done well.
- 1:53:52The National League pitchers have dominated.
- 1:53:54Two on the left by Savino and it is good-bye.
- 1:54:00Three's are Savino.
- 1:54:02He'll furl the Latin American fans and the Houston fans with that one.
- 1:54:06A two round home on exit seven to one.
- 1:54:09Is there any doubt about this ball shot?
- 1:54:13Savino locked in one here.
- 1:54:15He's got a ball up in the air at Leonard Stadium.
- 1:54:17There's not much chance to keep it in the ball.
- 1:54:22Yeah, it started this all with a base hit.
- 1:54:25Griffey kept it going with two out and Savino hit one high in the air.
- 1:54:30That was a Ruthenian sort of home run.
- 1:54:33A majestic home run off the bat of Savino.
- 1:54:37Savino has given up three.
- 1:54:41I just won the bull.
- 1:54:46What has been a fun time here in Philadelphia for everybody who loves his game of baseball.
- 1:54:51Great job by the Phillies of hosting it.
- 1:54:56The National League now has banged out ten hits and they lead seven to one.
- 1:55:01The pitchers on the way to Bob Boone and that is ball one.
- 1:55:05Boone is open wide.
- 1:55:10With the bullpen that the National League has remaining and Rick Roden in there now,
- 1:55:14the odds of the National League losing this game with a 7-1 lead and the eighth inning a rather slant.
- 1:55:20Boone is batting with two men out.
- 1:55:22Nobody on base. They still have Ken Force, Woody Friedman, John Metlack, and Dick Ruthen in the bullpen.
- 1:55:29Here's a high flat ball to right by Boone who will be caught by Rivers.
- 1:55:34Back near the track he one hands it, but the National League has come up with a three run inning.
- 1:55:39Three runs on three hits and after eight they lead the American League seven to one.
- 1:55:45Honda, be a general.
- 1:55:47This colorful bicentennial issue is now available by mail.
- 1:55:51Just send $2.50 to All Star Program Philadelphia Phillies, box 7575.
- 1:55:58That's box 7575, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1901.
- 1:56:04And one of the stars the program will be talking about is the right handed pitcher Kenny Force of the Houston Tavors.
- 1:56:11Come on now, the pitcher in the ninth inning against the American Tavors.
- 1:56:15Rick Roden worked only one, the Dodger right hander.
- 1:56:19His inning gave a hit.
- 1:56:21Struck out none, walked none.
- 1:56:23Ken Force takes over and Ron Say of the Dodgers is in at third base.
- 1:56:31Say replaces Mike Schmidt.
- 1:56:38And the pitcher is Ken Force, the tall and talented right hander of the Houston Astros.
- 1:56:43He talks it over with Bob Boone and he has a seven to one lead as Don Money leads it off for the American League.
- 1:56:51There have been two runs scored tonight against Mark Fitts.
- 1:56:54He'll be the loser if it doesn't change.
- 1:56:57Hunter gave up two and Kanana gave up three runs, three hits and two innings.
- 1:57:02And gave the only walk that was given to the National League.
- 1:57:08Well one from Ken Force and now Don Money pops it up on the infield. Who wants it? Dave Cash.
- 1:57:14And that will be the first out in the ninth inning. It is one draw.
- 1:57:19Money pops up.
- 1:57:27Carlton Fisk is lifted for the pinch hitter Chris Kamlitz.
- 1:57:31That was an interesting young man, a very articulate fellow. Left handed hitting force baseman in the Yankees. His father is a chaplain in the United States Navy and the active Navy.
- 1:57:42And this game has been dedicated to the U.S. Navy so it's fitting that he can end the game.
- 1:57:46Ball one high outside from the hard throwing force. Brother Bob pitches for the Cardinals.
- 1:57:55Here is the pitch. Swung on a broken back ground ball to short. Russell gets it close. Out at first. Kamlitz can run for a big man.
- 1:58:03He was throwing up a goal. Russell is the business end of the bat when passed the pitcher's mouth.
- 1:58:09The National League which lost 12 of their first 16 All-Star games now has a 10 game edge.
- 1:58:16They win this one 28 to 18. Leading they've won 24 out of the last 30 including five in a row.
- 1:58:23The National League players really think they have more camaraderie on their club than the American League players.
- 1:58:30They care more about this game. I don't know if it's true or not.
- 1:58:34Well certainly when you saw Pete Rose take that head first slide into third base you would have to think there's something to it.
- 1:58:40But overall the National League players in this game tonight Jack have a lot more experience in the American League.
- 1:58:45I think the American League now is trying to groom and bring along some young stars like Amos Otis who's here at bat.
- 1:58:51Otis is batting for Fred Lynn and he swings and misses strike one.
- 1:58:56They're too quick out here in the ninth inning as the National League leads by the score of 7 to 1.
- 1:59:01And the ball gets away from Boone to even it up one and one on Amos Otis of the front running Kansas City club.
- 1:59:12Forrest trying to end it here. Otis swings and misses and now he's in the hole one and two.
- 1:59:24It's been all National League since they scored two in the first.
- 1:59:28They have out hit the American League 10 to 5 and they lead 7 to 1.
- 1:59:32There have been no errors in this game.
- 1:59:34Forrest pitches. Otis fouls it and keeps the ball game underway.
- 1:59:38Well we've enjoyed our description of the game.
- 1:59:43Jack Buck along with Brent Musburger and Andy Musser.
- 1:59:46And in charge of programming CBS Radio Frank Miller has been producing this game.
- 1:59:54Here's a swing and a miss and Otis goes down and the National League has now won five in a row.
- 2:00:007 to 1 National League.
- 2:00:02Music
