- 2:26Speaker 4: into the show now from the Charleston Dirty Birds, my
- 2:28Speaker 4: good friend Jill Garon. Jill, good morning, welcome to the show,
- 2:31Speaker 4: Good morning, thank you, thank you for being here. Baseball
- 2:34Speaker 4: is back and we'll be playing soon over at the
- 2:37Speaker 4: ballpark for real. But this Saturday, unofficially, I guess the
- 2:40Speaker 4: kickoff our first pitch as it were for the upcoming season,
- 2:44Speaker 4: the Gomart Home Run Derby. Tell us about it.
- 2:46Speaker 6: Yeah, we're excited. This is our second home Run Derby
- 2:49Speaker 6: presented by Gomart. A lot of people think of home
- 2:51Speaker 6: Run Derby's as kind of an all star break, but
- 2:53Speaker 6: we decide to use it as a way to kick
- 2:55Speaker 6: off the baseball season for a number of reasons. One, obviously,
- 2:57Speaker 6: we want fans to get excited about the season opening
- 3:00Speaker 6: days May second, but also this is a great opportunity
- 3:04Speaker 6: to meet some of our new players. About eighty percent
- 3:06Speaker 6: of the roster is new guys, and when gates open
- 3:10Speaker 6: at five o'clock, every single one of our players will
- 3:12Speaker 6: be there to sign autographs until about five thirty. It's
- 3:15Speaker 6: the only time during season that you have access to
- 3:17Speaker 6: every single player at once.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Now, are you doing the for lack of a better term,
- 3:22Speaker 4: VIPs form the communities taking part in the home run.
- 3:24Speaker 6: Derby this year not this year, to be honest, not
- 3:26Speaker 6: many of them were able to hit the ball out
- 3:28Speaker 6: of the infield, so we decided to leave it to
- 3:30Speaker 6: the professionals this year. But we do have something really
- 3:35Speaker 6: exciting that's new this year. There is interactive voting for
- 3:39Speaker 6: the bracket of who you think is gonna win. You
- 3:41Speaker 6: scan the QR code, We're going to hand out a
- 3:43Speaker 6: flyer and it's gonna be on the video board. You
- 3:45Speaker 6: select you think is gonna win that round, and if
- 3:48Speaker 6: you select correctly, immediately you'll be emailed a cube on
- 3:51Speaker 6: for something like a free hot dog, a free soda,
- 3:54Speaker 6: free popcorn. If you guess correctly in the championship round,
- 3:57Speaker 6: you get a free ticket to opening Day.
- 4:00Speaker 4: So how is the home run derby itself for the players?
- 4:03Speaker 4: How is that going to work out this year? Howre
- 4:05Speaker 4: you gonna do that?
- 4:05Speaker 6: So there's gonna be six or eight I have not
- 4:07Speaker 6: been given the names yet. All of our guys just
- 4:09Speaker 6: showed up yesterday, so we're kind of scrambling right now,
- 4:11Speaker 6: but we're gonna have six or eight guys. It's one minute,
- 4:17Speaker 6: no two minutes of normal. The base balls are are
- 4:20Speaker 6: presented by Army National Guard. The white baseballs are being
- 4:23Speaker 6: hit for two minutes. If you hit one over the wall,
- 4:25Speaker 6: it's a point, and then the last minute is our
- 4:27Speaker 6: go Mart Green money balls. If you hit that over
- 4:30Speaker 6: the wall, it's two points. And then after that it's
- 4:32Speaker 6: like a normal home run derby where if you hit
- 4:34Speaker 6: the most points most home runs, you move on to
- 4:36Speaker 6: the next round.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I mean, I would think that for the players too,
- 4:39Speaker 4: this is kind of an exciting thing, kind of get
- 4:41Speaker 4: them jacked up and ready for the season. Then, of
- 4:43Speaker 4: course they're athletes, so they're going to be competitive with
- 4:46Speaker 4: each other and whatever happens out on the field is
- 4:49Speaker 4: going to carry on throughout the season and the locker
- 4:51Speaker 4: rooms and things of that nature.
- 4:52Speaker 6: Right exactly. I mean last year, one of our guys,
- 4:54Speaker 6: Tilman Pugh, who participated, he said, this is his first
- 4:57Speaker 6: ever home run Derby and he'd been a professional baseball
- 5:00Speaker 6: player for over ten years and this is his first
- 5:02Speaker 6: home run derby, so he was excited about it. And
- 5:04Speaker 6: not just the guys that are participating. You see, if
- 5:07Speaker 6: you watch the MLB Home run Derby, they get so
- 5:09Speaker 6: excited just watching their teammates competing. And we're going to
- 5:12Speaker 6: have that exact same issue with all the other twenty.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I mean, there is into it in watching the MLB
- 5:18Speaker 4: Home run Derby, as you said, Jill, there is into
- 5:20Speaker 4: it as what the fans are some yep.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Yeah, so I'm excited. It's always really fun to see
- 5:25Speaker 6: the fans interact, to see the players interact not only
- 5:28Speaker 6: with the fans, both each other, and it's kind of
- 5:29Speaker 6: my personal first experience of seeing what the personalities are
- 5:33Speaker 6: like on the team.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Also, and you've said the boys are back in town now, yep.
- 5:36Speaker 6: So a lot of them arrive between Monday and Tuesday
- 5:38Speaker 6: this week. Today, we actually have our first scrimmage going
- 5:41Speaker 6: on that's going to be in about an hour. So
- 5:44Speaker 6: we're excited. Baseball's here.
- 5:45Speaker 4: And as we talk about it every time we have
- 5:48Speaker 4: you here to get ready for the season. The kind
- 5:52Speaker 4: of baseball with the Dirty Birds that you don't have
- 5:53Speaker 4: the traditional spring training where you're going off to Arizona
- 5:57Speaker 4: or Florida or whatever. I mean, you train in town.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Much they're doing.
- 6:00Speaker 4: There are things in their respective hometowns. I get that,
- 6:03Speaker 4: but as far as a collective unit, you're you're doing
- 6:05Speaker 4: spring training here at the ballpark, right.
- 6:07Speaker 6: So what the affiliates do, the major league affiliates do.
- 6:09Speaker 6: They have their pitchers and catchers report in February and
- 6:12Speaker 6: they're ramping up as a team with the Dirty Birds
- 6:14Speaker 6: and other independent league teams. These pitchers are ramping up
- 6:17Speaker 6: on their own and they're basically expected to be at
- 6:19Speaker 6: ninety ninety five percent when they step foot in Charleston,
- 6:22Speaker 6: which a lot of them are. And their first real
- 6:25Speaker 6: quote unquote real game is April twenty fifth in Lexington, Kentucky,
- 6:28Speaker 6: and our first one at home is May second.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Of course, I'll have you on what day of the
- 6:32Speaker 4: week is May second on it's a Friday. It's a Friday.
- 6:34Speaker 4: So that's been our tradition for the last couple of years.
- 6:36Speaker 4: You come in, you bring the managers in, you bring
- 6:38Speaker 4: a couple of players, and we got a lot bigger
- 6:40Speaker 4: studia now because we can get three of you in
- 6:43Speaker 4: here and I think three in the in the isolation
- 6:47Speaker 4: booth where Ryan is in there. So we'll bring the
- 6:49Speaker 4: whole team if we have to in here. You've talked
- 6:52Speaker 4: about the players that are that are coming in about
- 6:55Speaker 4: eighty percent of them. I think you said there new
- 6:56Speaker 4: Is that right? Okay? And so where are where are
- 6:59Speaker 4: they coming from?
- 7:00Speaker 6: All over the place? Again, I just got the official
- 7:02Speaker 6: list yesterday, and so what's funny is not all the
- 7:05Speaker 6: guys that are at spring training actually make the opening
- 7:07Speaker 6: day roster, so it is kind of a bit of
- 7:08Speaker 6: a tryout. In terms of other countries, we got some
- 7:11Speaker 6: Venezuelan and some Cubans, Dominicans, a few Puerto Ricans, and
- 7:15Speaker 6: then all over the country we have guys who have
- 7:17Speaker 6: played in the Brewers' organization and the Angels organization. So
- 7:22Speaker 6: it's again, I literally just got the names less than
- 7:24Speaker 6: twenty four hours ago. So I'm still learning about the guys,
- 7:26Speaker 6: but all all over the world.
- 7:28Speaker 4: And that's one of the things I like about this affiliation, Jill,
- 7:32Speaker 4: that the Dirty Birds have now is that these are
- 7:35Speaker 4: guys that it's not just like you know when you're
- 7:38Speaker 4: playing typical minor league baseball. You know, it's your eighteen
- 7:41Speaker 4: nineteen year olds trying to work their web. You got
- 7:43Speaker 4: a few of those, but you also get some guys
- 7:44Speaker 4: who are like thirty, right, No, it goes all across
- 7:47Speaker 4: the board.
- 7:47Speaker 7: Right.
- 7:48Speaker 6: Are the two names that I know of from last
- 7:51Speaker 6: year that you might recognize. Kyle McGowan. He's a former
- 7:53Speaker 6: big leaguer, and so is Kiva Sampson. They're both going
- 7:56Speaker 6: to be in our starting rotation. So it's going to
- 7:58Speaker 6: be great for some of our younger guys in their
- 8:00Speaker 6: early twenties to be able to look up to these
- 8:02Speaker 6: former big leaguers and talk to them. And then, like
- 8:05Speaker 6: you said, we have these guys who maybe aren't trying
- 8:07Speaker 6: to make it back to the league, and then we
- 8:08Speaker 6: have some guys that are trying to make it back.
- 8:10Speaker 6: So it's a really fun diverse group.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Talking to Jill Garrin of the Dirty Birds, Dave Allen
- 8:15Speaker 4: showing five eighty Live brought to you apart by Morgan
- 8:17Speaker 4: and Morgan with more than twenty billion dollars recovered. They
- 8:19Speaker 4: believe that when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan and Morgan,
- 8:22Speaker 4: America's largest injury law firm. We'll have you on, as
- 8:25Speaker 4: I said on opening Day, maybe a couple times between
- 8:27Speaker 4: now and then. Of course you're always on during the
- 8:30Speaker 4: regular season. But for the fans, give us a little
- 8:33Speaker 4: preview of what we can expect at the ballpark this summer.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Anything new, anything exciting, anything gets you, get you all
- 8:40Speaker 4: juiced up. What do we get?
- 8:42Speaker 6: May is going to be packed. We have twenty home
- 8:44Speaker 6: games in the month of May, so if it's good weather,
- 8:46Speaker 6: come on out to the ballpark. There's going to be
- 8:47Speaker 6: a lot of fun promotions, like always, every Friday has
- 8:50Speaker 6: a giveaway. Opening Day is going to be a commemorative
- 8:52Speaker 6: coin to celebrate our twentieth anniversary of the ballpark opening
- 8:56Speaker 6: on the corner of Lewis and Moore Street, so we're
- 8:58Speaker 6: excited about that. Every Saturaturday will always be fireworks as well.
- 9:03Speaker 6: Sunday's kids twelve and under get in for free, so
- 9:05Speaker 6: that's really exciting too. Other promotions are our staples are back,
- 9:10Speaker 6: Woe making a Difference Night, African American Heritage Night, Celebration
- 9:14Speaker 6: of Labor. But you can see all of our promotions
- 9:16Speaker 6: at Dirty Words Baseball one.
- 9:18Speaker 4: That I'm going to go ahead and throw out there
- 9:21Speaker 4: right now. We're going to be doing our stations are
- 9:23Speaker 4: gonna be doing a lot of stuff there. I'm gonna
- 9:25Speaker 4: go ahead and give you a little sneak preview of
- 9:27Speaker 4: something we're excited about. We're gonna be doing an eighties night.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, with our sister station, of which I'm on
- 9:33Speaker 4: that station two ninety eight seven of the Mountain Wild
- 9:35Speaker 4: Wonderful Classic Rocket And anytime you put me and you
- 9:38Speaker 4: put Steve Animal out there, and you put Shockley out
- 9:40Speaker 4: there and we're out there enjoying little hair band music,
- 9:44Speaker 4: eighties night's.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Going to be.
- 9:46Speaker 4: We'll be giving all the details on that, but we're
- 9:48Speaker 4: seriously excited about that.
- 9:50Speaker 6: Yep. That's a Saturday in August. I want to say,
- 9:52Speaker 6: the first Saturday in August. So we're gonna have eighties
- 9:54Speaker 6: music being played for the fireworks too. And the day
- 9:56Speaker 6: before that is a shirt give away that I was
- 10:00Speaker 6: also presented by the Mountain so we're excited.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Yeah, we are excited. All right, let's get back to
- 10:05Speaker 4: the home run derby before we let you go. I
- 10:07Speaker 4: know you've got plenty of information about it on your
- 10:10Speaker 4: social media, but give us the time, give all the stuff.
- 10:14Speaker 6: So gates open at five o'clock. Remember, get here early
- 10:17Speaker 6: on Saturday because our players will be signing autographs and
- 10:19Speaker 6: taking photos for the first thirty minutes. First quote unquote
- 10:23Speaker 6: pitch is six o'clock for the home run derby. You
- 10:25Speaker 6: can get all of your tickets at dirtybirds baseball dot com.
- 10:28Speaker 4: All right, Jill Garrett of the Dirty Birds, It's always
- 10:30Speaker 4: a pleasure. I love this time. I love this time
- 10:33Speaker 4: of year. I mean, you know, baseball, Major League Baseball
- 10:36Speaker 4: has been in swing for a couple of weeks. How
- 10:37Speaker 4: your beloved Red Sox doing.
- 10:39Speaker 6: I wish I could tell you that I've watched a
- 10:40Speaker 6: single game, but I haven't. It's it's just unfortunately my
- 10:43Speaker 6: as soon as baseball season hits for the rest of
- 10:46Speaker 6: the world, my brain hits work mode a little bit
- 10:48Speaker 6: too much.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Catch up over the winter months. I guess about whatever
- 10:51Speaker 4: the season was again, everything's happening over at Gomart Ballpark,

- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:10Speaker 12: So the first trip we filled a really large box
- 15:15Speaker 12: truck full of air conditioners, do you humidifiers, shovels, I mean,
- 15:20Speaker 12: anything that buckets cleaning supplies. And that was the first
- 15:24Speaker 12: trip that we went down. That's been quite a few
- 15:28Speaker 12: weeks ago. And then this week we were able to
- 15:30Speaker 12: go down and present a check to an organization down
- 15:33Speaker 12: there that is still helping with clean up. Yeah, and
- 15:37Speaker 12: we were able to do that because of your listeners
- 15:39Speaker 12: and what you guys did on that day and just
- 15:41Speaker 12: an amazing, amazing time.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Well, we want to make sure people realize that the
- 15:44Speaker 4: need is still there. I mean we talked about it,
- 15:48Speaker 4: Amanda and I did on the midday show last Friday,
- 15:50Speaker 4: and I've told the story before. We thought it was
- 15:52Speaker 4: going to be just this fun little segment about a
- 15:54Speaker 4: restaurant that we do every Friday, we called the Lunch Spoty.
- 15:56Speaker 4: We interviewing a gentleman down there what they called the
- 15:59Speaker 4: Taco Mantaco Man, the Taco Man, and he was on
- 16:01Speaker 4: the show and it turned, as Amanda said, we thought
- 16:04Speaker 4: we were just going to talk about KSO and it
- 16:07Speaker 4: turned into so much more because he told us about
- 16:09Speaker 4: the need that those folks have down there and him
- 16:13Speaker 4: closing his restaurant, and I mean he hooked up with
- 16:17Speaker 4: the food bank across the street and cooked their food
- 16:19Speaker 4: in his restaurant. And and yesterday on the talk line,
- 16:24Speaker 4: I think it was no. Actually a couple of days ago,
- 16:26Speaker 4: uh TJ and Dave Wilson did an interview with one
- 16:30Speaker 4: of the county commissioners down there, McDowell County, and he
- 16:32Speaker 4: talked about he's pretty strong words about how how much
- 16:35Speaker 4: they need is there. And the reason I bring that
- 16:37Speaker 4: up to you guys is because I know you were
- 16:39Speaker 4: you were boots on the ground down there.
- 16:40Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 12: What I understand now is what they're needing is they're
- 16:43Speaker 12: needing people to be able to build. I mean you
- 16:44Speaker 12: think about all the small bridges going up in those
- 16:47Speaker 12: hollers that people are using as their driveways or even
- 16:50Speaker 12: you know, having to cross from those creeks. I mean,
- 16:52Speaker 12: that's what they're struggling with now, is what I understand.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Right, So you can help, yeah, and can they can
- 16:58Speaker 4: they just contact you? I mean if they, I mean,
- 17:01Speaker 4: give me your phone.
- 17:01Speaker 12: Number nine two five zero three six six you can
- 17:05Speaker 12: ask for me and we glad to uh, we'll be
- 17:09Speaker 12: glad to get back into this fight with these folks around.
- 17:11Speaker 4: I mean, like this battle has been going on really
- 17:14Speaker 4: with the with the situation McDowell County. It's been going
- 17:17Speaker 4: on before, before, before the floods, and now it's continued.
- 17:22Speaker 4: And what happens is, unfortunately people come down and they
- 17:26Speaker 4: help with the clean up. God bless them for doing that,
- 17:28Speaker 4: But then they go back home and there's still I mean,
- 17:31Speaker 4: the taco man told us a story about a lady
- 17:33Speaker 4: that was having to walk six miles down the railroad
- 17:36Speaker 4: tracks to be able to get to her doctor appointment,
- 17:38Speaker 4: you know, and uh and and then he continues, Okay,
- 17:41Speaker 4: so what do you guess here to talk about today? Lisa,
- 17:45Speaker 4: So Jason fingers at each other. Women on a Mission,
- 17:48Speaker 4: woman and missions.
- 17:48Speaker 12: Coming up May seventh, Treasures Beyond Measure, Lisa, you want
- 17:53Speaker 12: to tell them a little bit about what's going on
- 17:55Speaker 12: with that?
- 17:55Speaker 5: Sure?
- 17:55Speaker 4: And Leasta, you are the chair of the board, is yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 4: so so look alive.
- 18:01Speaker 10: Yes, I'm trying the boys here.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Yeah, but yeah, you're you're the you're the chair chairperson
- 18:06Speaker 4: on the board here at Union Mission. Talk about women
- 18:08Speaker 4: on a mission.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Well, Women on a Mission is the lunch and we
- 18:11Speaker 5: have every year to benefit the Union Mission but also
- 18:15Speaker 5: honors some amazing ladies from our community. And it'll be
- 18:20Speaker 5: May seventh this year at the Charleston Marriott from noon
- 18:23Speaker 5: to one thirty. It'll the five ladies that we're going
- 18:27Speaker 5: to be honoring this year are doctor Juliet Temple, Courtney,
- 18:31Speaker 5: Laura Anita Purdue, Gene Simpson, and Kelly Woodyard. And last
- 18:37Speaker 5: year we had almost three hundred and fifty people there
- 18:40Speaker 5: and we're looking forward to a really great event again
- 18:42Speaker 5: this year.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And where can people get tickets for.
- 18:44Speaker 5: That online at the Union Mission, Unia Mission dot com.
- 18:48Speaker 12: We feed people dot com or Union Mission dot com.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Talk about the criteria for these women that you're honored.
- 18:53Speaker 4: What are they? What have they done well?
- 18:54Speaker 5: We have a little committee that meets and we throw
- 18:57Speaker 5: around names. There's so many women in our community that
- 19:00Speaker 5: are very worthy of this honor, so it's really really
- 19:04Speaker 5: hard to narrow it down, but one who's community minded.
- 19:08Speaker 5: We focus on community service, on selfless service, on demonstrating
- 19:14Speaker 5: kindness and just helping in our community. All of the
- 19:17Speaker 5: women have great achievements, but we focus on service and
- 19:21Speaker 5: what they do for our community.
- 19:22Speaker 4: And how long have you folks been doing this?
- 19:24Speaker 5: About six years? I think this is our sixth We
- 19:27Speaker 5: had a several year stop because of the COVID But yeah, yeah,
- 19:32Speaker 5: and the event is when and where May seventh, at
- 19:35Speaker 5: the Charleston Marriott starting at New.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Yeah, it sounds like you've got a great lineup of
- 19:38Speaker 4: folks that you're honoring this year. Now in the past,
- 19:41Speaker 4: you've you've honored a lot a lot of great ladies.
- 19:42Speaker 4: We have great things. Yeah, yes, yes, So tell us
- 19:46Speaker 4: about some of the other things going on with the
- 19:47Speaker 4: Union Mission. We'll get back and we'll kind of wrap.
- 19:49Speaker 4: We'll get back to women on the mission in the moment.
- 19:51Speaker 4: But you guys are always you always get something going on.
- 19:53Speaker 4: To tell me about some other things going on in
- 19:54Speaker 4: Union Mission.
- 19:55Speaker 12: Yeah, we're always broadening our footprint in West Virginia. We're
- 19:59Speaker 12: still to not food to pantries all over the state,
- 20:02Speaker 12: thousands of pounds of food. We are still running our
- 20:04Speaker 12: addiction recoveries or behavioral health. We are still involved in
- 20:10Speaker 12: homelessness and that's that's.
- 20:11Speaker 4: A rough one.
- 20:13Speaker 12: People all over the city are obviously dealing with that,
- 20:16Speaker 12: and but it's something that where we are proud of
- 20:19Speaker 12: of getting people into into housing on a regular basis,
- 20:23Speaker 12: and you do a lot.
- 20:24Speaker 4: One of the things I really like about the mission,
- 20:27Speaker 4: if you will, of Union mission is when you talk
- 20:29Speaker 4: about these things, a lot of times there's a stigma attached,
- 20:33Speaker 4: and but you folks really specialize in helping people that
- 20:39Speaker 4: want to help themselves. Sure, because of.
- 20:42Speaker 12: The way we run our departments, there's there's an expectation,
- 20:47Speaker 12: and you know, we don't want somebody coming into our
- 20:49Speaker 12: shelter and just staying at that level in life. We
- 20:53Speaker 12: want that person to come into our shelter and then
- 20:55Speaker 12: get a ged and then get their job, and then
- 20:59Speaker 12: save for a car, then say for an apartment, things
- 21:02Speaker 12: like that, and that's that's that is the expectation.
- 21:04Speaker 4: And what are some of the things that you do
- 21:06Speaker 4: to work towards those expectations.
- 21:08Speaker 12: So immediately during the assessment, we figure out the things
- 21:11Speaker 12: that are barriers in life, meaning driver's license, meaning no
- 21:16Speaker 12: birth certificate, no Social Security card, finds that they've had
- 21:19Speaker 12: in their life and this is this is recovery and homelessness,
- 21:22Speaker 12: by the way, and we want to start immediately removing
- 21:25Speaker 12: those things in their life so they can start seeing
- 21:27Speaker 12: hope and and some success. And then we we bring
- 21:31Speaker 12: in organizations like Truists and Huntington Banks and they start
- 21:35Speaker 12: teaching budgeting and practices, and we get them connected in
- 21:39Speaker 12: our computer classes and we start teaching them Microsoft and
- 21:42Speaker 12: if a lot of them already know that, but then
- 21:44Speaker 12: then we talk about you know, resumes and such, and
- 21:47Speaker 12: we just want to start that process of getting back
- 21:50Speaker 12: into society.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Talking again with the Jason Quadtrel and Lisa Pak from Union.

- 22:12Speaker 4: are you guys doing over there? I mean, you know,
- 22:16Speaker 4: I've been down to read it read a sponsor here
- 22:18Speaker 4: and you guys are over here having way too much fun.
- 22:20Speaker 4: That's one of the things one of the things I
- 22:22Speaker 4: like about having you folks in the studio and when
- 22:23Speaker 4: we team up on these projects Jason, as we've done
- 22:26Speaker 4: in the past is let me say this to you, Lisa,
- 22:28Speaker 4: you're Bloways doing a good job here. Okay, he's safe
- 22:31Speaker 4: for a little while. I think because we have fun
- 22:33Speaker 4: when we do these things. I mean, you're not always
- 22:35Speaker 4: dealing with the most pleasant things, but we always when
- 22:39Speaker 4: we're standing out on those parking lots, whether we're doing
- 22:41Speaker 4: the the event we do with the sock Drop, or
- 22:44Speaker 4: whether we are collecting items for the for the flood
- 22:47Speaker 4: victims or whatever. You know, we do two three four
- 22:49Speaker 4: things a year together. We always have fun.
- 22:52Speaker 12: Hey, you're there six hours anyway, right, Yeah, yeah, and
- 22:55Speaker 12: so you might as well make it fun. Yeah, might
- 22:57Speaker 12: as well make it fun.
- 22:59Speaker 4: So let me get back to you. Why are you
- 23:01Speaker 4: involved in Union Mission?
- 23:03Speaker 5: Well, I have been for about twenty years. I think
- 23:06Speaker 5: my husband and I Larry, just have a heart for
- 23:08Speaker 5: what they do. And you know, they've been around for
- 23:11Speaker 5: one hundred and thirteen years. They truly helped the hurting
- 23:15Speaker 5: people of West Virginia. That's kind of their slogo logo,
- 23:19Speaker 5: and that's what they do. I see that that's what
- 23:22Speaker 5: they do. Jason's built an amazing team that just have
- 23:26Speaker 5: a heart for helping people.
- 23:28Speaker 4: Yeah, a couple of weeks well, actually, I guess a
- 23:30Speaker 4: couple of months ago, myself and Rob Reeal from our
- 23:33Speaker 4: sister station ninety six one KWS, we got an invite
- 23:36Speaker 4: to come out there and join you guys for lunch
- 23:39Speaker 4: and to talk to your board about a little bit
- 23:43Speaker 4: about ourselves, but more about you guys. And I was
- 23:45Speaker 4: amazed when I went around the room and I talked
- 23:49Speaker 4: to your employees there, I said, bored, but I really
- 23:51Speaker 4: mean employees and about the things that they do and
- 23:54Speaker 4: that they bring to the table. And when you looked
- 23:56Speaker 4: around that room of what ten people, I'm going to
- 23:59Speaker 4: guess thing that Rob and I took away from that
- 24:01Speaker 4: was you had a room full of people that truly
- 24:04Speaker 4: loved what they do and truly loved their job.
- 24:07Speaker 12: Yeah. That's the thing that I love to do, is
- 24:10Speaker 12: educate and teach those folks and build them up. About
- 24:13Speaker 12: eleven our of our directors were there at the time,
- 24:16Speaker 12: and and they all, my gosh, I mean, I mean,
- 24:19Speaker 12: they are so passionate about about what they do. And
- 24:21Speaker 12: I wanted you guys to see that. And it was
- 24:23Speaker 12: easy to see, wasn't it.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean it was, and not just in it
- 24:26Speaker 4: because you fed us. I mean we would have been
- 24:28Speaker 4: there plus two though. Yeah, yeah, we would have been
- 24:31Speaker 4: there anyway. But actually we got in in Jayce's truck
- 24:35Speaker 4: and went up to the different facilities that are there.
- 24:37Speaker 4: Explain to people where you are. For people that may not.
- 24:39Speaker 12: Know, Yeah, we're at seven hundred South Park, right across
- 24:42Speaker 12: from cemc Memorial. They used to call it back in
- 24:45Speaker 12: the day, mission holler. You go up in the in
- 24:47Speaker 12: the We're still there. We've got some building projects going
- 24:50Speaker 12: on now, but you know, that's the location, been there
- 24:52Speaker 12: for gosh since the fifties.
- 24:54Speaker 4: I was impressed when we took our little tour up there,
- 24:57Speaker 4: as you called it, mission mission holler, there at the
- 25:01Speaker 4: things that you have going on up there, because I
- 25:03Speaker 4: mean you were pointing to this building that building, saying Okay,
- 25:06Speaker 4: we're we're planning this for here, and we're doing this here.
- 25:09Speaker 4: And you wouldn't be able to do this if you
- 25:13Speaker 4: weren't already doing great things in the community, and if
- 25:15Speaker 4: you didn't have the buy in from the community a
- 25:17Speaker 4: least I'm gonna let you talk about that a little bit.
- 25:19Speaker 4: The buy in from some of these businesses and individuals
- 25:22Speaker 4: that help out. That's a big part of it.
- 25:23Speaker 5: It's a huge part of it. And even with this
- 25:26Speaker 5: event that we're doing, this Woman on a Mission lunch,
- 25:29Speaker 5: and that's what we've really tried to do is get
- 25:32Speaker 5: businesses and folks in the community just and they do
- 25:35Speaker 5: they buy in on what the Union mission that's doing
- 25:37Speaker 5: and it just having sponsors helps us support the daily
- 25:42Speaker 5: work of the mission and what they do.
- 25:44Speaker 4: All right, here's the part that we put the plea
- 25:46Speaker 4: out there. I mean, at this point, do you still
- 25:49Speaker 4: need sponsors?
- 25:50Speaker 5: We do still need sponsors. We have everything from two
- 25:53Speaker 5: hundred and fifty dollars to five thousand dollars.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Okay, is it if a business is listening right now?
- 25:59Speaker 4: A lot of business owners listen to this show. If
- 26:00Speaker 4: they're listening right now, can they still become a sponsor
- 26:03Speaker 4: if you need later? By are you selling tables and
- 26:06Speaker 4: that sort of way?
- 26:07Speaker 5: We are selling tables at work. I will say that
- 26:09Speaker 5: we are getting close to being sold out. I've probably
- 26:11Speaker 5: got about three hundred folks so far. We can hold
- 26:14Speaker 5: about three forty to three fifty, but we'd love to
- 26:18Speaker 5: have more sponsors, all.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Right, And how can they just reach out to Jason
- 26:22Speaker 4: the the information you gave us earlier.
- 26:23Speaker 12: Yeah, give us a call it three zero four nine
- 26:26Speaker 12: two five zero three sixty six and we will get
- 26:28Speaker 12: you to Lisa Pack and get you taken care of.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Yes, and Dave could I think a few sponsors who
- 26:33Speaker 5: knew what are very key. I would like to especially
- 26:38Speaker 5: thank VANDEA Health c AMC. They have always been a
- 26:41Speaker 5: very big supporter of the Union mission. And my husband
- 26:45Speaker 5: Larry Pack and his business partner Steve White have been
- 26:48Speaker 5: big supporters of the mission too. And this year we
- 26:51Speaker 5: have Huntington Banks, garib Dental, Slango Law and Kurt Higgot
- 26:56Speaker 5: the Kurt Higginbotham family have been very supportive. And I've
- 26:59Speaker 5: got a wholely of other sponsors, but those are our
- 27:01Speaker 5: big sponsors this year, all right, and.
- 27:03Speaker 4: We'd like to add your business or you as an
- 27:05Speaker 4: individual to that list. And there again, I'm sure Lisa
- 27:08Speaker 4: you've got sponsor packages. But you'll also say if anybody,
- 27:11Speaker 4: if you can, you can donate, you'll take it. You're
- 27:14Speaker 4: go turn anything away.
- 27:14Speaker 5: Right, That's right, that's correct, all.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Right, give us the details again, but the time and
- 27:19Speaker 4: the date and things of that nature.
- 27:21Speaker 5: It is May seventh. That's a Wednesday at noon at
- 27:24Speaker 5: the Charleston Marriott. Doors will open at eleven thirty. It
- 27:28Speaker 5: should last about an hour and twenty minutes hour and a.
- 27:31Speaker 12: Half, okay, And we know it's a time sensitive thing.
- 27:34Speaker 12: It's a luncheon and we want everybody to know that
- 27:36Speaker 12: we stick very close to that. Try to get everybody
- 27:38Speaker 12: back out. Yeah.
- 27:39Speaker 4: Yeah, And congratulations to those wonderful ladies that you mentioned
- 27:43Speaker 4: there too, because there's some real real go getters in
- 27:46Speaker 4: the Charleston community. And thank them for what they do
- 27:50Speaker 4: as well.
- 27:50Speaker 5: Yes, yes, it'll be a great day to get to
- 27:52Speaker 5: hear a little bit from them and to honor them
- 27:54Speaker 5: and just celebrate them.
- 27:56Speaker 4: Guys. Always appreciate you having having you on the show,
- 27:59Speaker 4: Lisa and Jay, and thanks a lot for being here
- 28:01Speaker 4: and the best of luck with and then Jason, you
- 28:03Speaker 4: and I will get together soon and see what we're
- 28:05Speaker 4: getting into next. Sounds good because once I get you, know,
- 28:09Speaker 4: I get me and you, and I get Rob Real,
- 28:11Speaker 4: and I get Steve Animal involved, and I get Logan
- 28:13Speaker 4: Scott and Stephen, Jenny and Woody and all the folks
- 28:15Speaker 4: here we are I mean when and it's gonna sound
- 28:18Speaker 4: like a commercial. But when you hear that tagline at
- 28:21Speaker 4: at the top of our era every hour, this say
- 28:22Speaker 4: is we're proud to live here too. We are proud
- 28:24Speaker 4: at this company, wv RC Media, to be part of
- 28:28Speaker 4: the community. This is a West Virginia owned and operated company,
- 28:31Speaker 4: and we believe in giving back. It's not just promotion
- 28:34Speaker 4: for us. I mean, we really do, and we appreciate
- 28:37Speaker 4: you allowing us to do that.
- 28:38Speaker 12: No, it's great. It's a great partnership. It's very easy
- 28:41Speaker 12: to see your all's passion for the community and it
- 28:45Speaker 12: only allows us, it gives us an outlet, it gives
- 28:47Speaker 12: us an area to serve and uh and help more.
- 28:52Speaker 12: I understand we're maybe coming this June. We're going to
- 28:54Speaker 12: look to help some kids, aren't we.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we got some I'm not ready to reveal
- 28:59Speaker 4: that yet, but but we got some big announcements coming
- 29:01Speaker 4: about one of our next big events we're gonna be

- 32:59Speaker 4: on Carl's podcast, which is just just crazy good. By
- 33:04Speaker 4: the way, thank you, I appreciate it. Yeah, you guys
- 33:06Speaker 4: just do a fantastic job with that podcast. What is
- 33:08Speaker 4: it about the pot and let's talk to what's called
- 33:12Speaker 4: with for NFL great Carle and Lisa Odie and yourself
- 33:15Speaker 4: and other guests from time to time. What is it
- 33:17Speaker 4: that you enjoyed about doing that podcast so much? It'll
- 33:19Speaker 4: plug in for Carl.
- 33:20Speaker 14: Well, what's strange is that you know Carle coach Carly
- 33:23Speaker 14: he was my football coach at Westernia State. So it's
- 33:25Speaker 14: my college football coach, so we'd have been having these
- 33:27Speaker 14: talks for years. So this is just something that's, you know,
- 33:31Speaker 14: come from what we used to do. So now we
- 33:33Speaker 14: can do it on the radio and we have guys,
- 33:35Speaker 14: so we can actually just dive deep into sports, not
- 33:38Speaker 14: just about you know, what's going on in the field
- 33:40Speaker 14: or the court, but also social issues and different things around.
- 33:43Speaker 4: It's good stuff. I mean, it really really is. I
- 33:45Speaker 4: love a good sports discussion. I can turn this show
- 33:47Speaker 4: easily into a sports show every day, but they won't
- 33:49Speaker 4: let me do that, all right, So I got to
- 33:51Speaker 4: get back to the not so fun stuff sometimes. Yeah,
- 33:55Speaker 4: let's go back to the legislature. Let's go back to
- 33:57Speaker 4: the final night Saturday night. There were some, to put
- 34:01Speaker 4: it mildly, some some tense moments in the closing hour
- 34:05Speaker 4: of the legislative session. What did you make of the
- 34:07Speaker 4: proceedings there towards the end, with the parliamentary procedures and
- 34:11Speaker 4: things of that nature.
- 34:12Speaker 14: It all had to do with DEI okay, talk about
- 34:14Speaker 14: it again. It's supporting issue. Like I said, of my
- 34:18Speaker 14: emphasis and what I wanted to talk about that night
- 34:20Speaker 14: was about history and make sure we teach holistic history
- 34:23Speaker 14: and when I say holistic history, we want to make
- 34:26Speaker 14: sure that we teach all the parts that went into
- 34:29Speaker 14: a historical event that we don't admit individuals or you know,
- 34:34Speaker 14: situations that happened. So as far as the procedural rules,
- 34:38Speaker 14: it just was really disappointing that you know, Delegate excuse me,
- 34:42Speaker 14: Senator Garcia didn't allow he wasn't allowed to enter his amendments,
- 34:46Speaker 14: and you know, they suspended the own rules that they created,
- 34:50Speaker 14: which was Joint rules of three I believe, and you
- 34:53Speaker 14: know just has was said, you know, implementing some dirty
- 34:58Speaker 14: tricks in order to get that d I bill passed.
- 35:01Speaker 4: You know, you hear the letters DEI, and I've talked
- 35:06Speaker 4: about it on the show. I think sometimes that there
- 35:11Speaker 4: is it's not how can I say this? Unlike other
- 35:15Speaker 4: things that you folks in the legislature may focus on.
- 35:18Speaker 4: Sometimes things are very concrete. You know, we're talking about
- 35:21Speaker 4: something to do with voting, we're talking about something to
- 35:23Speaker 4: do with business. You can look at it, you can
- 35:25Speaker 4: say this is what it is. But when you put
- 35:28Speaker 4: throw out those letters DEI, it seems to mean different
- 35:31Speaker 4: things to different people. And I'm not taking aside one
- 35:35Speaker 4: way or the other I'm just saying it's one of
- 35:36Speaker 4: those rare things that you vote on that you talk
- 35:39Speaker 4: to this senator or this delegate, and it means one thing.
- 35:42Speaker 4: You talk to this senator or delegate, it means something else.
- 35:44Speaker 14: Talk about that, And I guess you could say that
- 35:48Speaker 14: I don't know if I necessarily agree with that. Okay,
- 35:50Speaker 14: And again, just as I said on the floor, if
- 35:52Speaker 14: you want to get rid of a diversity equity inclusion
- 35:54Speaker 14: office at a university, I'm not for that. I do
- 35:57Speaker 14: not support that, but fine, But I believe that this
- 36:01Speaker 14: particular bill, it was overly broad and it went too far.
- 36:04Speaker 14: Because what's going to end up happening, particularly has becomes
- 36:08Speaker 14: teaching our kids in high school and middle school, particularly
- 36:12Speaker 14: about history West Virginia history, World history, American history. I
- 36:16Speaker 14: think some teachers are going to be hesitant to do
- 36:19Speaker 14: that because in fear that they may offend, you know,
- 36:23Speaker 14: certain people, and they may get reported. So I just think,
- 36:26Speaker 14: you know, a bill like it, it goes too far.
- 36:28Speaker 14: And when we just use those phrase, the DEI phrase,
- 36:31Speaker 14: it becomes like this boogeyman and.
- 36:33Speaker 4: What does it mean to you?
- 36:34Speaker 15: What does the EI mean to you? To delgate Hollis Lewis,
- 36:37Speaker 15: I just means it means including everybody. It means in
- 36:41Speaker 15: it means learning a little bit about everybody. Far as history,
- 36:44Speaker 15: it means, like I said, I use the furnent frame
- 36:46Speaker 15: holistic history. It means that if I'm going to be,
- 36:49Speaker 15: you know, working in the public sector, that I'm gonna
- 36:52Speaker 15: be trained on cultural competency, so I know how to
- 36:55Speaker 15: deal with individuals from all spectrums. Because for example, when
- 36:58Speaker 15: you take a state like West Virginia, West Virginia has
- 37:00Speaker 15: about four or five cultures just within it. You take
- 37:03Speaker 15: southern West Virginia, you take the Eastern Pandahandle, the Northern
- 37:05Speaker 15: pandahandle north central West Virginia, all different cultures, Charleston, it's
- 37:10Speaker 15: all different cultures. So we have to even within our state,
- 37:12Speaker 15: have to learn about one another. So it's just like
- 37:15Speaker 15: learning those things about people that if you know in
- 37:18Speaker 15: your community that you may not.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Know, what would you say to those who have the idea.
- 37:23Speaker 4: And I'm talking about not necessarily in the capitol dome.
- 37:26Speaker 4: I'm talking about Joe or Joanne average, you know, just
- 37:29Speaker 4: out on the streets or whatever, to think, well, DEI.
- 37:32Speaker 4: It just gives people unfair advantages. You're going to be
- 37:35Speaker 4: hired for a job just because you're a certain caller
- 37:37Speaker 4: or just because you're this or that.
- 37:39Speaker 14: What would you say to that, Well, I think number one,
- 37:41Speaker 14: it's a merit base program anyway you look at it.
- 37:44Speaker 14: So if you work at a law firm and they
- 37:46Speaker 14: have a quote unquote DEI initiative, you still have to
- 37:49Speaker 14: be an attorney, you still have to pass the ball,
- 37:51Speaker 14: you still have to go to law school, so you
- 37:52Speaker 14: still have to be qualified to get the position. So
- 37:55Speaker 14: you're not going to get a position or be hired
- 37:57Speaker 14: into a position in which you aren't qualified for. I
- 38:00Speaker 14: think that you know, when we talk about dr or
- 38:02Speaker 14: divarsity EQUI, including initiatives, we're just trying to round out.
- 38:06Speaker 14: We're trying to get a more rounded perspective of the
- 38:09Speaker 14: people that we have employed or the people that are
- 38:11Speaker 14: in this program. So I think, and again it helps
- 38:14Speaker 14: all it's not and I think too often we look
- 38:17Speaker 14: at like black and white. Right, it's about women, it's
- 38:19Speaker 14: about LGBTQ, it's about eighty eight individual veterans, veterans, it's
- 38:23Speaker 14: about a bunch of people who were saying that if
- 38:26Speaker 14: we have a veteran in a school that's going to
- 38:28Speaker 14: make our school better. We have a woman in the
- 38:30Speaker 14: police department that's going to make our police department better.

- 38:49Speaker 4: better health Today, let's talk about delegate the session as
- 38:52Speaker 4: a whole. Rate your satisfaction level on the session.
- 38:55Speaker 14: Probably I would say, you know, I'm a professor West
- 38:58Speaker 14: Viginia State, so I'm gonna go at d minors. You know,
- 39:01Speaker 14: I think that you know, we were actually able to
- 39:03Speaker 14: do some good things. I guess you could say, you know,
- 39:06Speaker 14: far as of giving teachers more autonomy, as far as
- 39:09Speaker 14: discipline is concerned, you know, we I think that one
- 39:14Speaker 14: of the governor's initiative was I thought was okay, was
- 39:16Speaker 14: one stop shot far as the permitting process. So if
- 39:19Speaker 14: you are trying to get those permission can go online
- 39:21Speaker 14: and do that and there's actually time and consideration interventions
- 39:24Speaker 14: in the classroom, different things of that nature. One of
- 39:27Speaker 14: my friend, Delegate Hall, the Saint Albans he had a
- 39:31Speaker 14: full time dementia service director, which I think is an
- 39:34Speaker 14: excellent idea. However, I don't think we adequately attack those
- 39:38Speaker 14: kitchen table issues. When we talk at about you know,
- 39:41Speaker 14: increased utility rates, when we talk about economic development, clean water,
- 39:45Speaker 14: when you talk about those things that are going to
- 39:47Speaker 14: affect West Virginia's everyday life, we still didn't really tackle
- 39:51Speaker 14: those issues.
- 39:52Speaker 4: Pia. It's still a huge problem. And we have a
- 39:55Speaker 4: foster care issue in this time, we have a childcare
- 39:57Speaker 4: issue in this state in general percentate, and I've heard
- 40:01Speaker 4: a lot of people on both sides of the aisle,
- 40:04Speaker 4: Republicans and Democrats that have said little was done there.
- 40:07Speaker 14: Little was done, I mean, and again it's a huge problem.
- 40:10Speaker 14: So that's not an easy fix, and that's not something
- 40:13Speaker 14: that we can, you know, just fix overnight or even
- 40:16Speaker 14: with a single bill. It's going to be something that
- 40:18Speaker 14: systematically we have to get to the heart of. And
- 40:21Speaker 14: and I think it's one of those things in which
- 40:23Speaker 14: when we talk about our you know, kind of the
- 40:25Speaker 14: elephant in the room here in West Virginia.
- 40:26Speaker 4: We talk about our drug issue.
- 40:28Speaker 14: We have to figure out a way to deal with that,
- 40:30Speaker 14: not only far as treatment is concerned, but prevention, just
- 40:33Speaker 14: a holistic treatment around that.
- 40:36Speaker 4: The Governor delegate on the Midday Sure earlier this week
- 40:39Speaker 4: said there will be a few special sessions. He alluded
- 40:42Speaker 4: earlier as like the long hot summer. He did that
- 40:46Speaker 4: early on, he said that the special sessions are coming
- 40:50Speaker 4: for sure. What do you want to see covered in
- 40:53Speaker 4: those special sessions?
- 40:54Speaker 6: Again?
- 40:54Speaker 14: I want to see, like I mentioned, I want to
- 40:56Speaker 14: see utility race. I want to see us try to
- 40:58Speaker 14: talk about p I. I want us to see us
- 41:01Speaker 14: address clean drinking water. I want us to see I
- 41:04Speaker 14: want to I want to see us help you know,
- 41:07Speaker 14: counties like mcdalll County who are struggling not only with
- 41:10Speaker 14: you know, the flooding that happened, but also their infrastructure
- 41:13Speaker 14: and just where they're going to go from here. You know,
- 41:16Speaker 14: once thriving county who's on the brink of being you know,
- 41:19Speaker 14: taken over by the state. So we have to address
- 41:21Speaker 14: those sort of issues. We have to address our you know,
- 41:24Speaker 14: our economic issues. It's a bunch of issues we need
- 41:27Speaker 14: to address here in Wes Virginia medicate all those sort
- 41:30Speaker 14: of things.
- 41:31Speaker 4: Do look before we let you go. I know you
- 41:33Speaker 4: are someone who really engages with your constituents. You're a big,
- 41:37Speaker 4: very big on social media. You're regularly, as we said,
- 41:40Speaker 4: cheap plug for the podcast you and Carl and Lisa
- 41:43Speaker 4: on let's talk. What do you hear from your constituents?
- 41:47Speaker 4: I know the session just gallbled out, you know, at
- 41:50Speaker 4: midnight on Saturday. But what have you heard so far
- 41:55Speaker 4: from them about the session? And what do you hear
- 41:57Speaker 4: from them on a regular basis, Just if you pass
- 41:59Speaker 4: somebody in the super market or whatever, what do you
- 42:01Speaker 4: hear about consent?
- 42:02Speaker 14: I think a lot of people just don't understand what
- 42:04Speaker 14: we're doing up there. I think they they're thinking of it.
- 42:08Speaker 14: You know, I don't want to say a waste of time,
- 42:10Speaker 14: but why aren't we tackling those important issues? Why are
- 42:14Speaker 14: we spending so much time on you know, defining the
- 42:16Speaker 14: man and woman or different things of that nature. Well,
- 42:19Speaker 14: like I said, and I keep I hate to keep
- 42:20Speaker 14: going back to it, but people are concerned about the
- 42:23Speaker 14: grocery prices, the utility bills. You know, we have a
- 42:26Speaker 14: large portion of our population who work at a state
- 42:29Speaker 14: level government. Job and a PEI rates are rising and
- 42:34Speaker 14: salaries aren't you know we we you know, when we
- 42:36Speaker 14: talk about economic development development we introduce several recreational cannabis bills,
- 42:41Speaker 14: adult use cannabis bills that you know went nowhere. So
- 42:44Speaker 14: people are concerned about those issues, what we call kitchen
- 42:48Speaker 14: table issues that's going to affect their bottom line as families.
- 42:51Speaker 4: And hollow Slewis, it's always a pleasure to have you

- 46:09Speaker 4: that out. Coming a bunch Ofmorrow's show, We're going to
- 46:11Speaker 4: get an update on some things going on at West
- 46:12Speaker 4: Virginia International Yeger Airports. We're gonna talk about the annual
- 46:16Speaker 4: Tunnels to Towers Foundation five K run and walk coming
- 46:20Speaker 4: up in Ripley and Angie Gillenwater is here with our
- 46:23Speaker 4: Adoptmy Please Pet of the Week from the Canal Charleston
- 46:26Speaker 4: Humane Association. That's all on tomorrow's show now on Metro
- 46:30Speaker 4: News Midday Today, powered by Selango Law. I'm flying solo
- 46:33Speaker 4: today as Amanda Baron thirteen News and Tonight Live anchor
- 46:36Speaker 4: will be off today. She's actually off on assignment doing
- 46:40Speaker 4: something for that TV thing that she does, but I'll
- 46:43Speaker 4: somehow get through it today on the show Today, a
- 46:46Speaker 4: couple of state senators in separate segments. Joey Garcia will
- 46:50Speaker 4: be here, as well as Rupy Phillips. Joey Garcia the
- 46:54Speaker 4: Democrat and Delegate Phillips the Republican. A couple of guys
- 46:58Speaker 4: who know a lot about politics in West virgin Mike
- 47:00Speaker 4: Plant and Tom Sussman will be here. April is organ
- 47:04Speaker 4: donation month. We've been spotlighting the success story in the
- 47:07Speaker 4: field of organ transplants. Will introduce you to yet another
- 47:09Speaker 4: success story, and of course open line West Virginia Metro
- 47:12Speaker 4: News Midday with me going flying solo today powered by
- 47:16Speaker 4: Selango Law coming up at noon to three on this
- 47:18Speaker 4: and many other metro news stations. Wow, got a lot
- 47:22Speaker 4: of texts to get to. Uh let me see here.
- 47:28Speaker 4: I'm not gonna be able to get to all of them,
- 47:30Speaker 4: so I'll get to as many as I can. Tex says,
- 47:34Speaker 4: Sorry to break it to you, but most Americans don't
- 47:36Speaker 4: want actual history. Most Americans want the Disney the Disney
- 47:41Speaker 4: fed history that makes them feel good and patriotic, not
- 47:44Speaker 4: the history of slavery, genocide, and oppression and how those
- 47:47Speaker 4: resonate into today. Tech says it's only Republicans who use
- 47:53Speaker 4: whatever definition of DEI they want. They are scared to
- 47:55Speaker 4: say they prefer whites and don't want to help minorities.
- 47:59Speaker 4: Is it DEI to say that the slave trade was bad,
- 48:01Speaker 4: that the US government engaged in genociding against Native Americans,
- 48:04Speaker 4: then the redlining in the sixties disadvantaged blacks, that Ice
- 48:08Speaker 4: is racially profiling Hispanic Americans, that police systematically violate civil
- 48:12Speaker 4: rights of non whites, etc. Yes, if you are Republicans.
- 48:16Speaker 4: Republicans have no honor or integrity. Tex says the only
- 48:21Speaker 4: time that cannabis legislation is a kitchen table issue is
- 48:24Speaker 4: after you fired one up and have the munchies. It's
- 48:26Speaker 4: a tex that even got a smile out of TJ. Medis.
- 48:29Speaker 4: Tex says, any chance of a sixties night some Elvis
- 48:32Speaker 4: and Beatles, etc. Well, I think that was in reference
- 48:34Speaker 4: of the Dirty Birds, Jill Garren. If you're listening, somebody
- 48:37Speaker 4: wants a sixties night over there, Texas day. Religious leaders
- 48:42Speaker 4: need to attend events like Pride Day at the ballpark
- 48:45Speaker 4: and invite people to church. That's what God called you
- 48:47Speaker 4: to do. You don't have a problem supporting a sex
- 48:50Speaker 4: assault felon Texas. All my utilities have gone up one
- 48:55Speaker 4: hundred and fifty to two hundred percent since Republicans took
- 48:57Speaker 4: over the legislature. Need to vote on Public Service Commission,
- 49:00Speaker 4: not allow governor to appoint people to those positions. DJ
- 49:06Speaker 4: is here.
- 49:06Speaker 7: How you doing, man, I'm good. It doesn't matter who's
- 49:08Speaker 7: in office, your utility rates would go up regardless. Yeah,
- 49:11Speaker 7: it's all about how many people you have here to
- 49:13Speaker 7: cover the cost. Look, it's kind of like the price
- 49:17Speaker 7: of oil. People want to blame whoever's in the White House.
- 49:20Speaker 7: The politicians want to say the other party's in charge,
- 49:22Speaker 7: that's why your gas is going up. Pogwash. It's all
- 49:25Speaker 7: about the market. It's all about the number of people
- 49:26Speaker 7: paying into the system. It's all about a huge amount
- 49:29Speaker 7: of fixed costs that we have to cover in this state.
- 49:31Speaker 7: State that's a very hard topography to cover to provide
- 49:34Speaker 7: any kind of utility, and not having enough people.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Paying in I knew as soon as we said utilities
- 49:40Speaker 4: that you'd want to jump in just utilities. It's any
- 49:42Speaker 4: kind of business man.
- 49:43Speaker 7: I mean, come on, I'm not trying to disparage people
- 49:47Speaker 7: or or knock on them for hard times because things
- 49:50Speaker 7: are getting more expensive and it's getting harder and harder
- 49:53Speaker 7: to afford the basic necessities. But that is a symptom
- 49:58Speaker 7: of a much larger problem we have here in West Virginia.
- 50:00Speaker 7: And it all boils down, Dave. We don't have enough
- 50:02Speaker 7: people working, we don't have enough people that live here,
- 50:06Speaker 7: and this is a tough state to live in, especially
- 50:08Speaker 7: from a topography perspective. Yes, these mountains are beautiful. I
- 50:11Speaker 7: love this state, but it's tough to live here. So
- 50:14Speaker 7: until we get honest about these problems and try to
- 50:16Speaker 7: do something to fix the problem, that will then fix
- 50:19Speaker 7: these symptoms. How are you going to fix topography though, Well,
- 50:23Speaker 7: I mean, look, Colorado has topography, but they have people.
- 50:27Speaker 7: You'll always it'll always be expensive to build things, but
- 50:29Speaker 7: if you got enough people to cover the cost, yeah, Well,
- 50:33Speaker 7: and that's one of the problems.
- 50:34Speaker 4: And we talked about a little bit on the show
- 50:36Speaker 4: with some of the areas that are repeatedly flooded, it's
- 50:40Speaker 4: a much larger issue, and some people would say, well,
- 50:44Speaker 4: why don't you just move? I get that sentiment. Sure, However,
- 50:49Speaker 4: you're dealing with a lot of these areas that get
- 50:51Speaker 4: flooded on a regular basis. And I'm not talking about
- 50:53Speaker 4: the occasional flash flood that we have in West Virginia.
- 50:55Speaker 4: I'm talking about the ones in southern West Virginia. McDowell County,
- 50:58Speaker 4: Wyoming County, Mingo County, Logan County. These areas are are
- 51:02Speaker 4: frequently flooded Boone County. I'll throw in your native land
- 51:06Speaker 4: of Boone County in there. We see this a lot.
- 51:09Speaker 4: It's not as easy as telling people to move because
- 51:11Speaker 4: in many cases you're dealing with folks that are disadvantaged economically. Uh,
- 51:17Speaker 4: not saying it's anybody's fault. Sometimes it's their own fault.
- 51:20Speaker 4: I won't call it like it is. I mean, sometimes
- 51:22Speaker 4: it is our own fault. Sometimes it's not. They own property.
- 51:26Speaker 4: Mamm All, Papa owned this property. They're not going to
- 51:28Speaker 4: leave the they don't want to leave. The Hollers paid for,
- 51:31Speaker 4: paid for very very low cost to live there, as
- 51:34Speaker 4: far as property taxes and things of that nature. So
- 51:36Speaker 4: there's a lot of problems you and I will not
- 51:38Speaker 4: solve them. Hey, I've got a snicker out of you.
- 51:40Speaker 4: When the person said that the only time that cannabis
- 51:44Speaker 4: is a kitchen table issue is when you get the munchies.
- 51:46Speaker 4: That was a texture that said that not mean. All right, Well,
- 51:49Speaker 4: so I have a sense of humor despite what people mean,
- 51:51Speaker 4: you do have a sense. I share an office with you,
- 51:53Speaker 4: and I and I do know that you do have
- 51:54Speaker 4: a sense of humor. Yeah, we we have quite fun
- 51:58Speaker 4: in our office to do. Me and you and Bobby
- 52:01Speaker 4: and Leah and Amanda, we all share. Don't forget our
- 52:03Speaker 4: putting green and a putting green and our disco wee.
- 52:05Speaker 4: We're the only office of the building with a putting
- 52:07Speaker 4: green on a disco ball. All right, what you got
- 52:09Speaker 4: on the show today, Bud, Oh, you can't make this
- 52:11Speaker 4: stuff up.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Hobby's on at eleven six.
- 52:14Speaker 4: That'll be fun.
- 52:14Speaker 7: Jeff Jenkins stops by at ten thirty three to tell
- 52:17Speaker 7: us about everything that's going on in the Turnpike. We
- 52:19Speaker 7: start the show with Fairmont State political science professor Greg Now,
- 52:23Speaker 7: we're gonna talk about l Salvador jailing Americans down there.
- 52:26Speaker 4: Get his take, See what the law says. There's an idea.
- 52:28Speaker 4: I don't see what the law says and what a
- 52:30Speaker 4: novel concept? Now, Texas DJ is from Boone County. That
- 52:33Speaker 4: explains a lot.
- 52:34Speaker 7: Yes it does, and I'm proud to be from a
- 52:37Speaker 7: product of Sylvester, West Virginia.
- 52:39Speaker 4: Downtown Sylvester, not the suburb that's aroundtown. That's right, a right,
- 52:43Speaker 4: We gotta go. I'll see you later today I Metro
- 52:45Speaker 4: News midday till then, have fun and love somebody.
