- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his word, and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in the book of James, and James is a book that
- 0:21I love very, very much. I've actually memorized the
- 0:27entire book of James on It was either two or three different
- 0:30occasions. One was back I think in middle
- 0:35school, and I had memorized it for some Bible quizzing that was
- 0:40done at our church. It was kind of like a sport of
- 0:44sorts. I don't know if I've mentioned
- 0:45it much on Tabernacle Talk before, but so memorized the
- 0:50book for that. And I did not understand nearly
- 0:53as much of it then as I have been privileged to know it
- 0:57today. But it was it was great.
- 0:59And then the other times were at various like Bible camps during
- 1:03my teen years. And because I'd already
- 1:06memorized it previously and when I was at camp, like you just had
- 1:10to be able to say, I forget if it was a chapter at a time or
- 1:13something like that. And then you could, if you will
- 1:15kind of forget it after that. You didn't have to say the whole
- 1:18thing as one piece. And so I was able to, you know,
- 1:21just kind of go through and I could memorize the phrases, but
- 1:26certainly it did not make nearly as much of an impact as several
- 1:30years ago when I was a pastor at Moses Lake Baptist Church in
- 1:36Moses Lake, WA. We went through this book
- 1:39together on Sunday nights as a church family and I got to
- 1:43preach a couple of of the messages in there.
- 1:45Several of my friends, Dennis Fountain, the main pastor there,
- 1:49as well as Robert, Robert Elliott, the youth pastor, and
- 1:53Carlos Farias, our children's pastor, all got to preach some
- 1:56different messages within this series.
- 1:58And James and man, it was such a great encouragement and I know
- 2:04it'll be an encouragement to us here on Tabernacle Talk.
- 2:07And so we, once I do this, we'll have done everything from
- 2:13Philippians through Jude, all of the books in a row from there to
- 2:19there in the New Testament. And it's the one that I have not
- 2:24done yet from the general epistles is what it's called.
- 2:28That is books not written by Paul and and also not a gospel
- 2:33and not John's Revelation, which we will definitely get to at
- 2:38some point. I don't know exactly when yet,
- 2:40but I'm going to get us started off with who wrote the book of
- 2:44James and some things that we'll be looking for over the next
- 2:49several episodes as we learn together.
- 2:52I'm going to read verse #1 because it gives us kind of the
- 2:55baseline. He says James, a servant of God
- 2:58and of the Lord Jesus Christ to the 12 tribes dispersed abroad.
- 3:03Greetings. All right, here we have James.
- 3:07He says he's a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:11This word servant would also be the word.
- 3:14I'm just going to make sure I've got this correct.
- 3:15It should be the word do loss. Yes, that's correct.
- 3:18It's the word slave. And this would be someone that
- 3:21worked in someone else's household for them and they were
- 3:25at their beck and call. Whatever the master said, that's
- 3:27what they did. And James says I am just a slave
- 3:32of Jesus and of God. And that's my claim to fame.
- 3:37Now, those that would be receiving this letter here, the
- 3:4012 tribes dispersed abroad. So we know James is writing to a
- 3:44Jewish audience. And even as he starts off the
- 3:48letter saying that he's a servant of the Lord Jesus
- 3:51Christ, he's writing to a a Jewish audience that had
- 3:56accepted Jesus as the Messiah. And we would know from church
- 4:01history this would be James the brother, or I should say half
- 4:07brother of Jesus. That is, he would be a son of
- 4:10Mary and of Joseph. And so he had a kind of that
- 4:15half relation to the Lord Jesus who was born of Mary and of the
- 4:21Holy Spirit. And so Jesus would have grown up
- 4:25with James. Now one very random aside that I
- 4:28want to throw in here just because it's interesting to me
- 4:30and probably not another person on earth, the name here, James,
- 4:35is actually kind of an English thing that's happening.
- 4:38It may also have some roots to Latin as well.
- 4:40I haven't looked that far yet. The, the name here is the name
- 4:45Iakob in Greek, which we would know in English as Jacob for
- 4:51some reason when the Bible came into English and this very much
- 4:56by several centuries predates the King James translation.
- 5:01So it has nothing to do with him.
- 5:02But for some reason when we brought the name Iacob Jacob
- 5:07into our New Testament English Bibles, it got translated as
- 5:13James. And I don't know the why of
- 5:16that. And I'm I'm sure some of you
- 5:18will want to look that up later. Feel free to do so.
- 5:21Just know it's not some conspiracy by King James in the
- 5:241600s. It predates him by a couple 100
- 5:27years. But so this person, James, the
- 5:31half brother of Jesus, one that grew up with the Messiah and one
- 5:37that did not believe on him until after Jesus had risen from
- 5:41the dead and then showed himself to his disciples, to his his
- 5:47brothers, to his half brothers, and then to many other people.
- 5:51Even as we would read in First Corinthians 15, James went on to
- 5:55become a dominant force in the early church in a good way that
- 6:01he because of his proximity to Jesus and because of the fact
- 6:05that he became a Christian as a result of seeing the resurrected
- 6:11Christ and having interacted with him.
- 6:13James was on fire for the Lord. And he was actually one of the
- 6:18elders, one of the pastors at the church that was in
- 6:22Jerusalem. So you've got all of the
- 6:24disciples, all of the apostles that were there in Jerusalem,
- 6:28especially at the start of the book of Acts.
- 6:31And as we were going through, we interacted with James in Acts 15
- 6:36at the Jerusalem Council, which was when there had been some
- 6:39people that had gone out from the church at Jerusalem and they
- 6:44were basically tailing. They were following Paul on his
- 6:48missionary journeys and they were telling the churches along
- 6:51the way that they needed to not just believe and Jesus, but they
- 6:54needed to follow all of these Old Testament laws as well.
- 6:59And so when Paul came back through and he was like, no,
- 7:01that is anti gospel. That is false.
- 7:04When he got back to the church at Antioch, which would be kind
- 7:07of in in Syria ish, how we would know it today, he, he really
- 7:14disagreed with these people from the church at Jerusalem.
- 7:16And so they went back to the church at Jerusalem and they
- 7:20were talking to, if you will, the church that these men were
- 7:24members of. And Paul and then Peter and
- 7:30James giving the final word on, do these new Gentile believers,
- 7:35do they have to follow the Old Testament law in order to be
- 7:38right with God? To which the resounding answer
- 7:41was, no, absolutely not. Like they should still stay away
- 7:45from worshipping idols and from fornicating and those things
- 7:48like those things transcend just the Old Testament law.
- 7:53And James is the one that gives kind of this final declaration.
- 7:56And he has a a letter that's sent out to the church is
- 8:00basically to say what these guys said was untrue and it was
- 8:04wrong. And we did not send them out to
- 8:06say this here. Here's what we do think you
- 8:08should do, but you don't have to follow what these men were
- 8:11saying. So James was the pastor.
- 8:14Some would view his position in that church as like what we
- 8:18would know today is the senior pastor or the lead pastor of
- 8:22that church. And so that's the person is the
- 8:29pastor of the church at Jerusalem.
- 8:32And there were these tribes that were spread out.
- 8:34The book of James is often considered to be one of the very
- 8:38first portions of the New Testament that would have been
- 8:41written. And so James very much has the
- 8:46Sermon on the Mount on his mind. And as we go through over the
- 8:50next several episodes, we're going to see this together.
- 8:53Like, OK, how does James think about Jesus's teaching and how
- 8:58it applies to these Jewish believers that are now scattered
- 9:03all across the Roman Empire, in part due to some of the
- 9:06persecution from the religious leaders They are in Israel and
- 9:10in Judea, some of the things that Paul even would have
- 9:15started. And Paul would be part of the
- 9:17reason why some of these people were dispersed abroad.
- 9:20And so James is writing to these believers.
- 9:22He's writing to them for a couple of reasons #1 he wants to
- 9:25encourage them in their faith and very practically in their
- 9:30faith. This book is often mentioned as
- 9:32like the the Proverbs of the New Testament because there are so
- 9:37many down to earth. Here's exactly what you need to
- 9:40be doing kinds of verses as opposed to some of Paul's
- 9:45writings are very like, hey, here's who Jesus is and here's
- 9:48all of these tie insurance with Old Testament prophecy.
- 9:51And with what this writer said, James is just very down to earth
- 9:56and very practical. And so a lot of people love this
- 9:59book for that reason. He is also writing because there
- 10:04are some rich people that came into these churches, these
- 10:11congregations, and because they were rich and because they were
- 10:15very like charismatic and could teach.
- 10:19They were placed in positions of authority that they should not
- 10:23have been and they were abusing people as a result of their
- 10:27positions that they had. They did not have a care and a
- 10:31love for God's people. They were not avoiding sin.
- 10:34They, if you will, did religious things, but they did it in an
- 10:38ungodly way. And so James is writing to warn
- 10:42these believers about allowing these people to continue in in
- 10:48the path that they were leading some of these churches in that
- 10:52way. It's very much like some of what
- 10:55we would read in second Peter and in first, second, and third
- 10:59John and in Jude. So we're going to go through
- 11:04just a couple of verses today now that you kind of have the
- 11:08basis of who's writing, who's he writing to, what's going on?
- 11:13And I think we're going to get through verse, just verse #7
- 11:17today. So we're going to read verses 2
- 11:18through 7 and we'll be done. Verse #2 Consider it a great
- 11:22joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various
- 11:27trials, because you know that the testing of your faith
- 11:30produces endurance, and let endurance have its full effect,
- 11:35so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
- 11:40Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to
- 11:45all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given to Him.
- 11:50But let him ask in faith without doubting.
- 11:53For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed
- 11:57by the wind. That person should not expect to
- 12:00receive anything from the Lord, being double minded and unstable
- 12:05in all his ways. All right, so we have two kind
- 12:10of commands here. One, consider it joy when you're
- 12:13going through trials and #2 ask God for wisdom in faith.
- 12:20So let's look at that first section here in verse #2 through
- 12:244 Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever
- 12:28you experience various trials, this word, consider it.
- 12:31It's a accounting term. It is to reckon you are to count
- 12:36it all joy. Whenever you experience various
- 12:40trials, when you have that relational difficulty, you
- 12:45should count it as a win. It is an asset.
- 12:49It is income into your spiritual life.
- 12:52When you are going through relational trials, when you are
- 12:58needy financially, when you are struggling with temptation
- 13:02versus sin, you need to view these as good things in your
- 13:07life. Now that goes completely
- 13:09contrary to how we would think. We'd say no, that's a that's a
- 13:12bad thing if I'm going through a trial, but God says no, it's
- 13:16good. And here's why it's good when
- 13:18you go through various trials in your life, he says, because you
- 13:22know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
- 13:28That when our faith, when our belief in God and our following
- 13:33of him, our acknowledgement of him as Lord, when that is
- 13:37tested, when we are given the option to give up on God and to
- 13:43give into despair, to give into temptation, to give into
- 13:48atheism. When we are confronted with
- 13:51those and we say no, I'm going to stick with God that produces
- 13:56endurance in our life. I'm going to look at this word
- 14:00endurance here. This is the capacity to hold out
- 14:05or to bear up in the face of difficulty.
- 14:08This would be elsewhere translated as patient or having
- 14:13fortitude, steadfastness, perseverance.
- 14:16God wants to grow perseverance in your life so that in one
- 14:20sense you show the devil that he is wrong, he is evil, he is
- 14:28condemned when you do not give up on God.
- 14:32This is what we see in the life of Job and where God continually
- 14:37there. There's two times in Job one and
- 14:39two tells Satan, Hey, have you considered my servant Job how
- 14:42there's no one like him in the earth, A mature, a complete and
- 14:46an upright man and and Satan goes, Oh well, if only you
- 14:52would, you know, do this or this, then then he would no
- 14:55longer love you or serve you. In this way.
- 14:57We get to spit in the face of Satan.
- 15:00When we don't give up on our God and we become persevering
- 15:07people. We become stronger as a result
- 15:10of the trials and the temptations that we go through.
- 15:15I'll just speak for me. That is a God mindset that I
- 15:20have to choose to adopt. That's not natural to me.
- 15:22When I'm going through trials, I'm like, hey, God, I'd really
- 15:25like to give up. I don't.
- 15:27I don't want to keep on doing this.
- 15:28This is bad. God.
- 15:29Get Me Out of this situation. But God loves me too much to
- 15:34leave me just the way I am. He wants to make me more like
- 15:38Jesus. And the way I become more like
- 15:40Jesus is I go through trials like Jesus went through trials.
- 15:43He was rejected by his earthly family.
- 15:45He was scorned and ridiculed by people and by the religious
- 15:48leaders. He went through temptations by
- 15:51Satan and and by some of his best friends enticed him to sin.
- 15:55But as he continually turned to God and did not give up on the
- 16:01Lord, it, it just proved over and over again the righteousness
- 16:06of Jesus and in your life and in mine.
- 16:08When we say no to sin and to trials and temptations, we get
- 16:14to look more and more like Jesus, that Jesus has more and
- 16:17more glorified in us that people would go, man, there's no way
- 16:19that Brian's getting through this on his own.
- 16:21Like he's got to have some supernatural help in order to go
- 16:25through all of this. And so we know the testing of
- 16:29our faith produces endurance and perseverance that resounds to
- 16:33the glory of Christ. Verse #4 Let endurance have its
- 16:37full effect so that you may be mature and complete, lacking
- 16:43nothing. The more that we allow trials to
- 16:49impact us in the way that God wants them to, which is to draw
- 16:53us to Him, that we would be closer and closer in
- 16:55relationship with Him, we'd be talking with Him, we'd be
- 16:58worshipping Him. That happens as a result of the
- 17:02trials and we continually yield to Jesus as a Lord as a result
- 17:09of our trials that we say, Jesus, I know you have something
- 17:12for me to learn. So I'm going to learn something
- 17:14about my character. I'm going to learn something
- 17:16about your goodness. I'm going to learn something
- 17:18about your provision in times of my need as all of these things
- 17:24shape us and it shapes our mind on what we expect to receive
- 17:28from God. Do I expect that there will be
- 17:30trials? Do I expect just a clear Rd.
- 17:32with nothing ever going wrong? As we allow trials to have their
- 17:37full effect, then we become more and more mature and complete in
- 17:42our Christian faith. Lacking nothing.
- 17:44I think of one person, Joni Erickson Tata.
- 17:48So Joni Joni and then Tata TADA. Joni Erickson Tata is a
- 17:58quadriplegic who has a wonderful testimony of faith and she is a
- 18:04mature, she is a mature believer as a result of the hardships
- 18:09that she has gone through. And in my life, the people that
- 18:13have made some of the most impact are the people that have
- 18:16walked through the deepest trials in life.
- 18:19I've mentioned here before Fountain Senior, my, my pastor's
- 18:22dad that he went through 10 years of four different cancers
- 18:26and, and strokes. And he was one of the godliest
- 18:28men that I knew. But that was born out of trials
- 18:32in his life that made him the person that he ended up being.
- 18:38All right, I'm going to do this. I don't often do this, but I'm
- 18:40going to back out of verses 5 through 8 today.
- 18:45I'm just going to stop at verses 2 through 4.
- 18:47Next episode we'll look at verses 5 through 8 at least, and
- 18:53we'll look at asking God for wisdom and how to do it, how not
- 18:58to do it. And I hope it'll be an
- 19:00encouragement to you Today. Our thought is, are you
- 19:03grateful? Do you consider it a win when
- 19:07you are going through trials and temptations knowing that God
- 19:10wants to shape and mold you and make you look more like Jesus?
- 19:15That you would have a closer walk with Him, and that you
- 19:17would be able to tell others about your God as a result of
- 19:21what you are going through? Are you allowing the trial to
- 19:24shape you to love God more and to seek His mind more and and to
- 19:30manage your expectations more or to change your character?
- 19:33Are you allowing that to happen when you are going through
- 19:38difficult times? I hope that'd be a challenge and
- 19:40an encouragement to you. I know it is even to my heart.
- 19:43And I will pick up tomorrow in verse #5 thanks for being here.
