- 0:00Right hour number two, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 0:02Trent and I have another. Well, not quite an hour.
- 0:04We'll take you until just before 2 off the bench.
- 0:07At that time. We do have a keyword coming up.
- 0:09Another opportunity. Win $1000.
- 0:11That in about 20 minutes. Bill Seals on Iowa State at the
- 0:15bottom of the hour. The music means it's time to
- 0:18talk some baseball. unjuice.net dot Bet, I beg your pardon?
- 0:22Unjuice dot Bet is the sponsor of our weekly guest, our weekly
- 0:27conversation with Matt Snyder from CBS, cssports.com.
- 0:31I wondered how you were going to handle the power rankings.
- 0:33By the way, you've had a very busy Monday, Matt Snyder.
- 0:36Not fine enough hours in my day to keep up on everything you're
- 0:38writing. That's a good thing.
- 0:40But the Braves, right on top of your power rankings, again, had
- 0:44another important weekend and it went their ways.
- 0:48They take two or three from the Dodgers.
- 0:49That was a series. I think a lot of baseball fans
- 0:51were wondering how it would go. Good to talk to you, Matt
- 0:54Snyder. How are you?
- 0:56Yeah, I'm, I'm very good. Yeah, I also mowed the lawn too,
- 0:58so I pack it in today. Getting all that stuff done,
- 1:03just the Braves big series, big series win.
- 1:06Strider looked really good over the Dodgers this weekend.
- 1:09Look, the Dodgers are going to be there at the end, one would
- 1:12assume, right? But the Braves are playing very
- 1:14good baseball as we speak. Yeah, I think the biggest thing
- 1:19from the weekend was the Spencer Strider start and how, you know,
- 1:25he came back from injury last year, He had the surgery in
- 1:272024, came back last year, 4.45 VR Ray just never really looked
- 1:32right, didn't look like himself, was on the IL took a while to
- 1:36get back. Like OK, what's going to happen
- 1:38with this guy? First start in Colorado, not
- 1:41very good, but it's in Colorado. But he's still 6 blocks or five
- 1:45walks and then he comes out in Dodger Stadium and throws 6
- 1:48scoreless innings with only one hit allowed and strikes at 8
- 1:51now. OK, well that's Spencer Strider
- 1:53now. So they had in terms of the
- 1:56rotation just from the injuries such as Schwellenbach, who still
- 1:59is out for a while, Chris Dale, you know, he's probably going to
- 2:02be good all year, but you don't know about Bryce Elder, you
- 2:05don't know about Martine Perez, how they're going to hold up,
- 2:09getting Strider to look like the old Strider.
- 2:11That had to be big time optimism resonating throughout the
- 2:15organization there. I mean, we know the offense is
- 2:18going to continue to be good, especially when Nekunya comes
- 2:20back. We know the bullpens going to be
- 2:22amazing all year with Iglesias and Suarez and Kinley and Lee.
- 2:25But to see stride or so like that, I thought that was a big
- 2:30big. Deal, No question.
- 2:31Just real quick before I have you seen Mike Trout rumored to
- 2:35the Braves? I'm starting to see more and
- 2:37more of that. I don't know if it's just one
- 2:39site and now everybody's picking up on it.
- 2:42OK, not really. So nothing to that because I
- 2:45mean, what an addition that would be, right?
- 2:46I mean, they I think Major League Baseball wants him in the
- 2:49playoffs. Obviously, the Braves have a
- 2:50major, major chance Boy with him, with the Brave, that might
- 2:53that might be enough to put him over the top.
- 2:56Yeah, that'd be cool. It feels like he'd have to go to
- 3:00left field to replace Mike Yastrzemski there.
- 3:04Yeah. I mean, I, you know, he he
- 3:07obviously he has his ten and five rights at this point.
- 3:09I don't, I don't know that he would definitely wave them to go
- 3:12anywhere. But with the Braves being a fine
- 3:16organization that are contending very, very often, that might
- 3:19just do it. You know what?
- 3:21I'm gonna jump in here, Jack. Does anyone come back to the
- 3:23Braves? Bobby Cox passed away this
- 3:25weekend. What the some of the stories
- 3:28that have come out from his former players.
- 3:30I don't know if you ever had an opportunity to interview him.
- 3:32I remember is the Blue Jays skipper when they when they
- 3:36started to get good in the 80s, when they were, you know, they
- 3:39sucked, sucked, sucked and then all of a sudden they were good.
- 3:41But Bobby Cox, what a what a phenomenal baseball life.
- 3:44What a phenomenal baseball man. Just your thoughts on on what he
- 3:48leaves behind and what he meant to MLB.
- 3:51Yeah, fourth all time and wins 5 tenants World Series 4 Manager
- 3:55of the Year awards. That's a lot of, you know,
- 3:59decoration right there on the resume as it is fourth all time
- 4:03and post season wins as well. One of the things I think that
- 4:07sticks out to me the most is the having the career record and
- 4:12ejections, which I don't think will ever be touched because I
- 4:14don't think that guys are going to be at the helm long enough.
- 4:17But I also with how many things you can challenge nowadays,
- 4:20there's hardly the opportunity to go argue and get thrown out
- 4:23anymore. So now, and the reason I bring
- 4:27it up is there are there are myriad reasons.
- 4:30It's not just because it sounds really funny that he got kicked
- 4:33out so often. There are different components
- 4:36to that. First off is the longevity.
- 4:38In order to have that job for long enough to set the record
- 4:40for ejection, you have to be good enough to keep your job.
- 4:43So that's part of that's a testament to how good the Braves
- 4:45were so for so long, winning fourteen straight division
- 4:48titles. Another part of that is they
- 4:50were very good during that run at developing talent.
- 4:52We saw guys like Chipper Jones and Andrew Jones and even Jason
- 4:56Hayward toward the end of his run come up underneath Bobby Cox
- 5:00learn on the fly. We also saw him deal with, you
- 5:03know, the development of let's say, John Smoltz, Tom Clavin,
- 5:06Steve Avery came up. They brought Greg Maddox over.
- 5:08Obviously that helped. But Denny Nagle, for example,
- 5:12really coming to his own there. Kevin Bill would really come and
- 5:14coming into his own there with that staff.
- 5:18So getting your players backs is part of what can get managers,
- 5:22managers ejected, whether it's standing up for them on a close
- 5:25call and, and, and whether you think they're right or not,
- 5:29whether it's just keeping them in the game because you think
- 5:31it's a terrible call and you think the players going to get
- 5:33kicked out. So you get in between them and
- 5:35make sure that you get kicked out and not the player.
- 5:38There are just so many different components to all those
- 5:40ejections that I think a lot of people might not think about.
- 5:43Tariq's Google could recover from orthopedic elbow surgery
- 5:48quicker than the usual tie line timeline, according to his
- 5:52agent, Scott Boris. Not only that, Boris takes it a
- 5:56step further in the procedure that was used.
- 5:58He's calling it a scubal scope. I mean, is he looking for a side
- 6:01deal here? Because it looks like school's
- 6:04not going to get the money. Maybe, he thought, in the open
- 6:05market. Yeah.
- 6:08So again, several different components to this.
- 6:11First off, the initial reaction when you say Scott, Boris does
- 6:15this about his client, the initial reaction is to kind of
- 6:18roll your eyes, say yeah, whatever.
- 6:19But the more I thought about it, it was like, well, this is in
- 6:22season. He's obviously not getting an
- 6:24extension. He's going to free agency.
- 6:26He's not a free agent right now. So it's not like he's trying to
- 6:29get him a job right now. So why would he have to over
- 6:32exaggerate? It leads me to believe.
- 6:35And in fact, if you take that another step further, if he says
- 6:39this and then Scubal's out for the rest of the season, then he
- 6:41looks really, really bad. So I don't think unless it was
- 6:45true, he would take that chance. Now, of course, then he has to
- 6:48take it a step further and go with the Scubal scope and all
- 6:52that crap. That's like winter meetings.
- 6:54Scott, Boris, right there for you.
- 6:56But like, yeah, it led me to believe that there was that
- 7:00there were at least elements of truth because I was like, man,
- 7:04if he doesn't come back now, Morris has egg on his face.
- 7:07And he doesn't want to do that in front of free agency.
- 7:09So it led me to believe that there might have been like one
- 7:13small bone chip. And it was really easy to go in
- 7:15and take it out. And then he'll be able to start
- 7:17throwing quickly, which a lot of the recovery timeline usually is
- 7:22how much longer it takes to build yourself back up right if
- 7:25you don't. For example, in spring training,
- 7:28did they get a pitcher to get two months to build themselves a
- 7:31month and 1/2 at least month and a half month, Three weeks to
- 7:34build themselves up and get ready for the regular season
- 7:36until you're ready to go. So if you get shut down for a
- 7:40month, you're basically starting over.
- 7:42Then you need another six weeks to build your arm up to get
- 7:44back. So I think part of the argument
- 7:47is he's only going to be shut down from throwing for like a
- 7:50week or two, and then it's not going to take him near as long
- 7:52to build back up. So we'll see.
- 7:54But my hunch is that's what it was more like he's not going to
- 7:58have near as much recovery time because he's not going to be
- 8:00shut down. For as long.
- 8:02Interesting. I think you're spot on and never
- 8:04thought of it that way. I'm glad you brought that up
- 8:05because if it does backfire, that's obviously going to hurt
- 8:08him once he gets to the morning. It'll be awful, no doubt about
- 8:11it. So what about his Tigers?
- 8:12I mean that division The Twins are in last place 2 1/2 games
- 8:15out of the league, which is just tells you all you need to know
- 8:19about the division overall. But if the Tigers do languish,
- 8:23is scuba made available, do you think, once we get to the trade
- 8:26deadline? OK, It would have to be really,
- 8:30really far back because I don't think they would do that if they
- 8:33thought they had any, any shot at making the postseason,
- 8:36especially when we saw the Guardians last year come back
- 8:38from. 15 and the Tigers the year before.
- 8:41Yeah, So I mean it has to be at least double digits out of a
- 8:46playoff spot. But if they did get far enough
- 8:49back, yes, absolutely. I think that they would get in
- 8:51front of it because they signed from Revaldez last offseason.
- 8:54I think that was kind of like, hey, we're going to go for it
- 8:57this season, but if we don't do anything, at least we've got
- 9:00Valdez plus some savings and money for other people and then
- 9:05school's going to walk. So yeah, I think he's gone from
- 9:09Detroit after the season regardless.
- 9:10So if they're in a spot where they think we're definitely out
- 9:14of it, yes, absolutely they would trade him.
- 9:17I just, man, they'd have to work awfully hard to get so far out
- 9:22in that division right now. They almost went from first to
- 9:24worst in like 3 days. That's the division, that's.
- 9:30Why different than the National League?
- 9:31Speaking of the American League as a whole, there are only three
- 9:34teams in the whole league above 500 at this point in time.
- 9:37Just absolutely unthinkable. It feels like a mathematical
- 9:41impossibility that you have a 15 teams and only three of them
- 9:45above 500. Yet here we are.
- 9:48Are there teams that you feel confident or going to turn it
- 9:50around? Who do you like outside of the
- 9:52Rays, the Yankees and I guess the A's because of the division?
- 9:56Who do you like in the American League?
- 9:58It's hard to be confident right now because we've seen about 1/4
- 10:02of the season. That's a decent sample.
- 10:04Mariners, I'll go right to. They're better than this.
- 10:07They were under 500 into June last year and then they ended up
- 10:11in the ALCSI don't think anybody else in the AL West is that
- 10:15good. I have the Rangers.
- 10:18Maybe I still just don't like their offense that much and the
- 10:21rotation isn't as deep as it should be or as good as it
- 10:25should be if you want to get by with a little offense.
- 10:28But then again, like Corey Seeger should be way better
- 10:30offensively. When Wyatt Langford comes back,
- 10:33maybe he gets things going. You expect Mackenzie Gore to be
- 10:37better than this 5.180 RA. They expect Nathan Ivaldi to be
- 10:41better than this? Maybe, but definitely confident
- 10:45in the Mariners out there. Astros done with them.
- 10:49Obviously the Angels are not good central hard to be
- 10:53confident in anybody, but it seems like the Royals kind of
- 10:56have a good thing going right now after that horrible start.
- 10:59Maybe the Royals will get things going.
- 11:01Tigers. I'm, I'm waiting, especially
- 11:03with school ball out for at least another few weeks, waiting
- 11:07a little bit there and the East. I still, I still think there's
- 11:11something more on them in the Blue Jays. 8 1/2 outs of tall
- 11:15order right now. 7 1/2 behind the Yankees is a tall order.
- 11:17But to at least get into wild card contention with the winning
- 11:20record, yeah, I do think they have enough to do that.
- 11:22And again, four games under, they were two games under in
- 11:25late May last year. So I know it is a tall order, as
- 11:30I said, not only to run down the division title, but to expect
- 11:34them to get as hot as last year just because it happened last
- 11:37year. But you at least have the
- 11:40mentality in the clubhouse, which is, hey man, we already
- 11:43did this, then you know you're not going to be lacking
- 11:45confidence in the clubhouse. You have to if their leader
- 11:48could hit the baseball further than the warning track, for
- 11:51crying out. Loud.
- 11:51I don't. That's what I think.
- 11:52I don't know if you saw my power rankings.
- 11:54I did yes. When Vladimir Guerrero junior to
- 11:57be slugging under 400 to only have two home runs that I mean,
- 12:01I know he's hitting three O 8. I know he's getting on base, but
- 12:04man, that's that's the guy that you won't need to hit the ball
- 12:07out of the ballpark who's just not cutting it.
- 12:10No doubt I want to go to the National League.
- 12:12I do want to get to the text of the play at the plate the other
- 12:15yesterday where replay totally got it wrong.
- 12:17But but I'm going to start with the Brewers who I'm starting to
- 12:20think that they're starting to look like themselves again.
- 12:23The guys are coming back into this line up.
- 12:25It looks as though the Brewers probably too late to get them
- 12:28now to win the Central Division. I don't know what they were.
- 12:30I don't think they ever dropped off the face of the earth, did
- 12:32they, Trent? I don't think they did.
- 12:35But it seems like the Brewers are about to make a run and the
- 12:38Cubs, I think it's going to be like we thought it was going to
- 12:41be. It's either the Brewers or the
- 12:42Cubs. Here comes Milwaukee, Matt
- 12:44Snyder. I bet you could still get pretty
- 12:46decent odds because there's always a tax for the the mega
- 12:49market teams and the Cubs had a decent sized lead and just won
- 12:52so many games. I bet the Cubs are still favored
- 12:54there and the Brewers are decent money, but not as much as it
- 12:57would have been, you know, a week ago.
- 12:58Like, especially with them sweeping the Yankees.
- 13:01That'll make people perk up. Yeah, get Jackson Turio back,
- 13:06and he's been amazing. And that's somebody who could
- 13:08make a difference in a big, big way.
- 13:11He could be, he could play like an MVP caliber guy having missed
- 13:16as much time as he is in the same league as some major, major
- 13:19big guns. I'm not saying he's going to win
- 13:20it this year, but I'm saying he could play like that type of guy
- 13:24that's a needle mover there. And then you get Andrew Vaughn
- 13:26and hits a home run. That's you get another extra
- 13:30oomph of power in the middle there.
- 13:31When you've got Churrio and terrain toward the top of the
- 13:34order, you can put Vaughn in the middle there.
- 13:36That really lengthens their lineup on in the middle with
- 13:38William Contreras, obviously and in the rotation.
- 13:41I know Woodruff had that dead arm where he was only throwing
- 13:43like mid 80s. He's on the IL, but Miss
- 13:46Zorowski looks like a legit ace. I mean, 70 strikeouts and 44 is
- 13:51ridiculous. And Kyle Harrison, Chad Patrick,
- 13:55Logan Henderson, they've got good rotation depth right now
- 13:58even with Woodruff being hurt. So yeah, they're legit.
- 14:03Something came out contender versus pretenders.
- 14:05And I said that brews are strong, strong contender.
- 14:09Play at home played aside in the Cubs game yesterday, as Ken
- 14:12brought up to me, degrom reaches 1900 strikeouts.
- 14:17Like, OK, that's nice. And then you see it's the least
- 14:19amount of innings and the least amount of games started to hit
- 14:23that park. He's still searching for his
- 14:25100th career victory, yet if he can have a healthy couple more
- 14:30seasons in today's environment, a baseball Mr. Hall of Fame
- 14:34voter? Yeah.
- 14:35Is Jacob to Graham a Hall of Famer?
- 14:38Yeah, 99 career wins is not even remotely on my radar.
- 14:42I don't think that matters as much.
- 14:43Like if somebody, I don't think we're going to see anybody for a
- 14:46long, long time get there. But just for the sake of
- 14:48argument, if somebody got to 300 wins, I don't think I would look
- 14:51at any other stat. And I would just say, I'll give
- 14:53you the respect to stick around long enough to get to 300 wins
- 14:56because you can't get there without being good.
- 14:59But not having enough doesn't move the needle for me,
- 15:02especially when he only has 67 loss.
- 15:05So if you're just looking at on a percentage basis, it's very
- 15:09obvious this guy's gotten screwed out of so many wins over
- 15:12the years, whether it's by a lack of offense or or as
- 15:15bullpen. The workload I think is more of
- 15:19an issue because you're not even to 1600 innings right now.
- 15:23It'll be interesting to see on a rate basis.
- 15:25There's no reason to talk about it, right?
- 15:27Like 2.570 or a 0.98 WHIP to strike out.
- 15:30Rates hardly ever walk in anybody.
- 15:33All of his percentages are absolutely Hall of Fame level
- 15:36percentages. It's just are you going to have
- 15:39the workload? Because even in this day and age
- 15:41of high strikeouts, he's not even the 2000 strikeouts yet.
- 15:44He'll get there. I think he needs to get over
- 15:462000 innings, which is at 1584 and a third right now, get over
- 15:512000 innings, and then we're probably getting over 2500
- 15:55strikeouts. And then given the rate stats, I
- 15:58think we're in good range there and he would probably make it.
- 16:01It's going to be close because he's still so good, but he's 38
- 16:05and there's so much mileage on that arm given the surgeries.
- 16:09Who? Yeah, like you say, you better
- 16:10stay healthy for the next couple of years.
- 16:12I think he's a Hall of Fam boy. Sure looked like 1 yesterday,
- 16:14but there. Really.
- 16:15Feels like 1. He does one of those guys that
- 16:17when you say the feel factor, like when you're watching
- 16:20somebody, it's what people said like anti Scott Roland, for
- 16:23example, when you watch Scott Rowland, did you feel like you
- 16:26were watching a Hall of Famer? When you watch Jacob degrom, you
- 16:30always feel like you're watching a Hall of Famer.
- 16:32He got no run support for the most part, other than that two
- 16:34run bomb in the 9th inning. He got one the play at the play
- 16:38at the plate Mat. I mean, if you're going to have
- 16:40replay, they're there to get the call.
- 16:42Right. And that was pretty he.
- 16:44Was he was? He was out.
- 16:46There's no get. There's no way around it.
- 16:49It looks pretty easy to me. I know it was close, but just
- 16:52because it's close doesn't mean you have to uphold it.
- 16:56Just because it's close doesn't mean you can't change it like it
- 16:58can be. Oh man, it was so, so, so close.
- 17:01But he's out. OK then.
- 17:02He's out pretty seems seems pretty straightforward to me.
- 17:07We if you have any thoughts of a Philadelphia push come post
- 17:11season is the time to maybe buy a ticket Now.
- 17:14They're 10 and three under. Mattingly Sash Warber had
- 17:16another big day. Is the time now to jump aboard
- 17:20with Philadelphia because they definitely have the pieces and
- 17:22feels? Like, well, it apparently was
- 17:24right before, right when they fired.
- 17:25Yes, but. Excitingly was the time the
- 17:29upcoming schedule was really soft.
- 17:30They just got done playing only the brazen Cubs for two straight
- 17:33weeks when they were at their worst.
- 17:35And so it's it's kind of natural that they would get hot.
- 17:38Part of the key there is they I think we talked earlier in the
- 17:42season, the roster just seems so thin.
- 17:45Well, now you've got Brandon Marsh doing absolutely bonkers
- 17:48offensively, hitting 353. That lengthens the line up in a
- 17:53big, big way behind Trey Turner, Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber,
- 17:57who you know are going to be as good as anybody in the top
- 17:59three. If you can get, you know, Justin
- 18:02Crawford having a pretty good year toward the bottom lineup.
- 18:04Probably need more from Bryce and Scott now with Boom, but
- 18:08Brandon Marsh coming on strong and getting that hot as a good
- 18:11sign. Getting Zach Wheeler back and
- 18:14having him look at least close to old Zach Wheeler is also a
- 18:17big way to lengthen that, to lengthen that rotation there.
- 18:21Christopher Sanchez with that now 20 inning straight scoreless
- 18:24streak. Looks like again, you've got the
- 18:26pair of vases in Wheeler and Sanchez.
- 18:28Uzzardo is so inconsistent, but when he's on, he's really good.
- 18:32Probably need to see a rebound from Nola there, but they've got
- 18:35the ROM back at the end of the bullpen.
- 18:37They've had a lot of good signs. We'll see where it goes.
- 18:41A fascinating week. What's the What's the best
- 18:43series coming up this week? I was asked to rank them,
- 18:47actually, and preliminarily looking at it like Philly's
- 18:51Pirates is a really, really good one for the weekend.
- 18:55Braves is pretty good. Yeah, I was actually going to
- 19:00say, oh, I was just looking at the weekend, but yeah, if we
- 19:03were in the middle of the week, holy cow.
- 19:06I mean, that's top two in my power ranking.
- 19:07So of course I think that was amazing.
- 19:10Braves, Cubs. But I actually was thinking
- 19:13Cubs, White Sox over the weekend.
- 19:15It's at White Sox, the White Sox right in the mix.
- 19:19You never know, they could be in first place on the weekend
- 19:22because they're only one game out right now.
- 19:24The White Sox fans always have kind of little brother syndrome
- 19:28about the Cubs. So they're going to show up like
- 19:29it's their world theories and they hate the Cubs so much.
- 19:32Cubs are good. If the White Sox feel like
- 19:34they're good, that could be a really, really raucous
- 19:36environment there on the South Side this coming weekend.
- 19:39Murakami. What a story he has no doubt.
- 19:42About. Oh yeah.
- 19:43Really great. Good stuff.

- 21:36Let's talk some Iowa State Bill Seals joins us cyclonereport.com
- 21:40Bill Trenton Ken, thank you for coming on.
- 21:42I guess I want to start with the quarterback who by the name of
- 21:45Brody Campbell, who is he had 30 Division One offers and his his
- 21:51narrowed that list apparently to four schools, Arkansas, Georgia
- 21:54Tech, Maryland being the others and Iowa State.
- 21:58Have you got your crystal ball out?
- 21:59Is that what you do over at the rival slash on three?
- 22:02Well, your thoughts on Brody Campbell?
- 22:04Is he? What's a likelihood that he ends
- 22:07up a cyclone? Well, I think the odds are are
- 22:11pretty good guys. I mean, it sounds like Iowa
- 22:13states really making him a priority now.
- 22:16You know, he tweeted out a graphic a few hours ago that was
- 22:20sent to him by the Iowa State staff.
- 22:23He's kind of 1A now. They, they, I think they've cast
- 22:27aside DJ Hunter, not recruiting him as much or if at all like
- 22:32they were when they had him in during the spring.
- 22:35You know, Gary Chapman was another one they had offered
- 22:38were in home in school, I believe with him during this
- 22:42recent period. He's committed elsewhere.
- 22:44So I think it's Brody Campbell right now.
- 22:48That's the that's the priority. Arkansas, Georgia Tech,
- 22:52Maryland, the other of the finalists Iowa State will get
- 22:56its shot with him on an official visit in in June.
- 23:00They'll have him in I believe the 12th through the 14th is the
- 23:03weekend on that so and they they they got to get a quarterback
- 23:08here in in this class guys it's it's it's probably the most
- 23:12important. Well, it's always one of the
- 23:14most important positions on the field and in this class right
- 23:17now, it's probably the most important.
- 23:20I felt that they've done a great job addressing the offensive
- 23:23line. They've gotten a couple other
- 23:25positions commitments there, a couple on defense here recently,
- 23:30but quarterback I think, and Brody Campbell, that's probably
- 23:33the priority right now for the staff is to try to get him in
- 23:37the fold. I'm going to ask you about a
- 23:39couple of local guys, state of Iowa guys, Joe Vineyard, who I
- 23:42saw plenty of Waukee Northwest catching the ball from Matt
- 23:45Heitlin and making plays at the tight end position.
- 23:47Made his commitment and then Will slaggle.
- 23:49And after Matt Campbell departed, a lot of concerns, a
- 23:52lot of questions. Was he going to go over the east
- 23:54side of the state, maybe make a go a lot further east and go out
- 23:57to State College? Recommitting to this staff feels
- 24:00like 2 pretty important gets for the new coaching staff.
- 24:03Yeah, I think so, Will, Will Slaggle was an early priority
- 24:08for Matt Campbell and his staff and open, they had committed
- 24:12really early and then open things up for a little bit when
- 24:16the coaching change. And I think Jimmy Rogers, Jake
- 24:18Fortin, the offensive line coach came in, made a very quick
- 24:22impression on him. And I think all along Will was
- 24:26was probably looking to stay close to home, to close to
- 24:30Grinnell. You know, his his dad and his
- 24:32uncle played for Iowa, stayed in the 90s.
- 24:34He's a legacy type of guy. And then Iowa State got him in.
- 24:38And I think he's going to having having that commitment is going
- 24:42to pay dividends I think down the line for this, for this
- 24:45class as well. When you got a guy who's, you
- 24:48know, pushing 4 star consideration, I think if he
- 24:51plays his entire junior season and and wasn't out with the foot
- 24:55injury, he's a four-star right now.
- 24:57I think maybe slipped a little bit just with not a whole lot of
- 25:00junior film, but I think he re emerges as a four-star caliber
- 25:04guy this year. So having him in the fold is
- 25:08huge. And then Vineyard, you know,
- 25:10Waukee, how about that tight end that what do you want to call it
- 25:14tight end town or whatever whenever Jacobson going to A&M
- 25:17at Waukee and now the northwest kid that Joe vineyards a
- 25:22cyclone. So Isaiah Hanson, he's another
- 25:26one in state from Newton High School.
- 25:28He was the first commitment in this class.
- 25:30So I think you know, all things considered, this staff is is
- 25:33getting acclimated pretty well in state and in getting some of
- 25:37these guys early. Iowa State has a general
- 25:40manager. I hope I'm saying his name,
- 25:42right. Ricky Saccone is Saccone.
- 25:44Is that how do you say his name? Well, I'm calling him Ricky
- 25:47Chicone. I might be wrong.
- 25:49I think you're right. Maybe John Walters needs to
- 25:52correct me or something. However, he would introduce
- 25:54those guys. But yeah, yeah, he's the GM.
- 25:58He he pretty much took over the role that Derek Hoosier had that
- 26:02that's kind of that GM role as a director of player personnel,
- 26:06whatever you want to call it has kind of become the thing in the
- 26:10current era of college football with the, you know, handling the
- 26:13NIL Rev share all that kind of the behind the scenes type of
- 26:17stuff. Yeah.
- 26:18And then that's so it's not new that just a new name then for I
- 26:22would say, I guess what's his primary duty?
- 26:24Is he allowed to actually go on the road as a general manager?
- 26:28Do you know some of the rules that they are limited to or is
- 26:31it basically, you know, he can go out and do what he has to do
- 26:35as representative? Iowa State, What are the rules
- 26:38there? Well, they, they seems like
- 26:41they're ever changing. I'm, I'm not aware of him going
- 26:45out on the road during this, you know, this recent evaluation
- 26:49period. It was kind of a screw this kind
- 26:51of screwy timing on it really because Iowa State was still in
- 26:55spring ball. The evaluation period opened,
- 26:59you know, for coaches to go out and see kids and Iowa State's
- 27:01not going to miss time to be on the road when they're in spring
- 27:06ball. So what they ended up doing was
- 27:08sending out some of the some of the recruiting staff out.
- 27:13I'm not sure that Chicone was out, but I do know some of the
- 27:17other recruiting guys on the on the staff were out.
- 27:22Some of the names kind of escaping me right now, but some
- 27:26of the guys under under Chicone. OK, here we go.
- 27:32Oh gosh, name Alex Self. He's one of them I'm really
- 27:36thinking of here. He hits Saint Louis pretty hard,
- 27:39I believe from that area. Andy Lucas was another one,
- 27:43another one that has been pretty involved.
- 27:46But I think Alex Self was probably the primary one that
- 27:48was out on the road. I don't think he was doing a lot
- 27:51of communicating with the kids. He was doing a lot of filming
- 27:55and and talking to coaches. And then I think it was going
- 27:58back to their lead recruiter would follow up with a phone
- 28:01call or whatnot. But yeah, they've been this
- 28:04recruiting staff's been very active and it's all kind of
- 28:08being spearheaded by Ricky Chicone right now.
- 28:10So general manager Trent, the first one, did you remember 1
- 28:13before Belichick hired Michael Lombardi to be the general
- 28:17manager? North Carolina?
- 28:19I'd never heard referred to that, did you?
- 28:22Yeah. I mean it been something that
- 28:24has been out there and basketball, I think there was
- 28:26more of that that was having a dedicated position to do it and
- 28:29there are certain programs that don't do that, but that's been
- 28:32out there. I think it's because we also do
- 28:34the name and he used to be AGM at the end of that kind of
- 28:37helped connect the dots. But this is our new reality,
- 28:40Bill. I mean, as you see across the
- 28:41industry, there's got to be something that everybody's going
- 28:44to be doing right? Some form or fashion.
- 28:47Salary cap is one thing, but just trying to find the guys and
- 28:50and having that dedicated position feels like a new
- 28:53position that has been created in college football.
- 28:56Right. And, and correct me if I'm wrong
- 28:58here, Trent, I think Tyler Barnes is in that role for Iowa
- 29:01too, Correct? The GM and you know, I think
- 29:04he's the chief of staff too. And, and Iowa State's got a
- 29:07separate guy that's that that's the chief of staff.
- 29:10So at Chacon's main role is, is general manager and, you know,
- 29:15just handling everything. I think from a personnel
- 29:18standpoint, you know, numbers, NIL, web share recruiting, who
- 29:25you know, who they're bringing in.
- 29:26He he was a pivotal figure. I think when the the staff got
- 29:31to Ames and and they had to go to the transfer portal pretty
- 29:34quickly. And you, I mean, you noticed
- 29:36that Chacon was one of the first to join Rogers and Ames.
- 29:40And I think that was by design because he was heading up all of
- 29:44those efforts to, you know, flip this roster around.
- 29:48I think what 81 new players they're going to have.
- 29:51Not all of those are transfers, but that includes like the high
- 29:54school editions and stuff. But he had a pretty pivotal
- 29:57role, you know, especially earlier on, and he's still a
- 30:02busy guy. Just getting ahead of this
- 30:04switching to basketball. If Manchilovich decides that the
- 30:07NBA is just it's not that that dream is not going to happen
- 30:10this year. I don't know either way if it
- 30:12will or will if it won't, but I'm starting to see Kentucky.
- 30:16I'm seeing some removal for Manchilovich.
- 30:19Is the door totally closed? I know that.
- 30:21I mean, obviously TJ thought that he the likelihood of him
- 30:25coming back to Ames was slim to maybe none because he went out
- 30:28very quickly and he filled that roster and he spent, I'm
- 30:31guessing a lot of money to do so.
- 30:33We'll never know exactly how much, but Manchilovich is at
- 30:36least listening to some pretty big names when it comes to the
- 30:40the option for him to play his final year.
- 30:42What are you hearing, if anything, Bill?
- 30:44Yeah, I think that it's probably pretty well closed.
- 30:48I I wouldn't say it's ever completely closed.
- 30:50You you never say never. Iowa State does have one more
- 30:54scholarship it can give. And I, I, I don't see him
- 30:58probably using it and there's probably a #2 in mind if Milan
- 31:04were to ever come back. You know, what's the number?
- 31:06I'm not sure what exactly that number is.
- 31:08They probably got a little bit left in their Rev share pot.
- 31:12I, I would think with all the guys coming off the books this
- 31:15year around him with, with Tayman and Joshua, but yeah, I
- 31:19mean, when you're, when you're listening to, to Kentucky,
- 31:22they're at this point in the process.
- 31:24Iowa State's added five transfers already.
- 31:28I, I would assume that Kentucky's number, he, he's not
- 31:32going to turn that down. What we've seen them have a ton
- 31:36of money to throw around in the transfer portal market, you
- 31:40know, and the other thing the other thing is too is Pope is
- 31:44probably on the hot seat that has to be and he's missed out.
- 31:49You know, Kentucky's used to be in that blue blood team that can
- 31:52go out and get these five star high school kids.
- 31:54And you know, Tyron Stokes just committed to Kansas, another one
- 31:58that Pope has has missed out on. So the pressure's on him.
- 32:03You know, Milan's only got one year of eligibility left.
- 32:06So I mean it, it's it stands to reason that and he's got a
- 32:10pretty sizable offer out there that probably would make more
- 32:15money playing for one season at at Kentucky then maybe he would
- 32:20on a two way. And I again, I'm not sure what
- 32:23the two way he would contract amounts are, but he'd probably
- 32:27make more at Kentucky for a year than he would, you know, riding
- 32:30that two way roller coaster in the NBA and G League.
- 32:34And I saw something where Mark Pope did a live like Twitter
- 32:38question and answer to make. Sure, that was great.
- 32:42They he took a couple of hard questions.
- 32:44I was surprised. Yeah, there were a couple, he
- 32:47said. Though in that the clip that I
- 32:48saw, they had 14 of the top 20 transfers took a visit to
- 32:52Kentucky. Guess how many got to commit?
- 32:55Zip. Zero.
- 32:56Wow. Kentucky.
- 32:58Kentucky and the thought is out there.
- 33:01A lot of these players are using Kentucky for leverage and then
- 33:05going other places on top of the other.
- 33:07World we live. In absolutely a different world,
- 33:09there is no doubt about it. Hey Bill, I did have a quick
- 33:12football question for you. I was reading your article over
- 33:16previewing the safeties and trying to figure out outside of
- 33:18Drew Surgis who the hell are these guys we're doing all the
- 33:22time? Braden also.
- 33:24That was the big story really. His injury and being lost for
- 33:27the season with the ACL. Does he have a red shirt year
- 33:30available? Will he be able to to be
- 33:31available for 2027? Well, I, I think I, he, he's got
- 33:36a medical that he can use. I believe he's already used a
- 33:39traditional, but I mean, there, there's no doubt in my mind he
- 33:43could get a medical for what I mean, for they're, they're
- 33:45handing out red shirt years like candy anymore.
- 33:48And, and he's got a, he's got a legit case for a medical.
- 33:51I mean, he's out for the entire year.
- 33:53He's got a knee injury. So he could come back and in, in
- 33:582027. There's no doubt about that.
- 34:00I think it's just a matter of if he if he wants to, you know, go
- 34:03through the the whole process and and come back, I think he'd
- 34:07be welcomed back. They've got a pretty big gap, as
- 34:10you saw Trent on that, on that layout, a pretty huge gap
- 34:15between seniors and then it gets pretty thin and you get into
- 34:18sophomore and freshman, a lot of red shirt freshman and freshman
- 34:23in that group. They've got a pretty young, you
- 34:26know, nucleus there, but I think no doubt that Braden Alls would
- 34:30be welcomed back in 2027 and be a huge piece.
- 34:33But you know, going back to the original point, it's it really
- 34:38is wide open at that spot right now.
- 34:40They've got 3 red, well 2 red shirts seniors, a traditional
- 34:46senior and a fourth year junior and Drew Surges we talked about
- 34:50him a lot. I think those are probably the
- 34:52four that are in the mix right now for those two starting
- 34:56roles. So they'll have that nickel
- 34:58slash hybrid type of safety that switches in and out with a Sam
- 35:03linebacker in this scheme as well.
- 35:06So we'll see how that all sorts out.
- 35:08But a lot more unsettled, I think, than what it was the
- 35:12beginning of the spring when everybody knew all's was was
- 35:15going to be one of those starters.
- 35:16I was also taking a peek and I appreciate over the weekend that
- 35:19you updated the unofficial scholarship chart.
- 35:22I just love looking at those things.
- 35:24We've talked about this a little bit this spring with Iowa
- 35:26football and how young they are and the lack of seniors.
- 35:29Same thing for Iowa State. Who knows how what year #1 is
- 35:32going to look like, but there's going to be a ton of guys that
- 35:35at least have the opportunity to come back and feels like a
- 35:37pretty good building block here, guys with a lot of years of
- 35:40eligibility remaining. Yeah, there are.
- 35:43And and I think, you know, this staff is, is going to be a lot
- 35:47more aggressive in the portal. They had to be this year.
- 35:51There's no secret in that. But I think when they get
- 35:53settled in, they're going to be more aggressive probably than
- 35:57the old staff. So you you look at you look at
- 36:00the number of underclassmen, those guys and and this is an
- 36:04evaluation time for for those guys are they did the staff was
- 36:08not, you know, they didn't had no qualms about if there was not
- 36:12a spot for a guy on the old team, he wasn't welcome back on
- 36:16the new team. And I think they're they'll have
- 36:17a serious assessment of everyone on this roster.
- 36:21It's not just seniors that they'll lose, you know, they'll,
- 36:24they'll have some other guys that they just don't think can
- 36:27cut it at this level, you know, character issues what what have
- 36:31you. So, yeah, I mean it.
- 36:33They'll they'll look at those younger guys too.
- 36:35And then, you know, the ones that they think are cut out for
- 36:38this level make a nice nucleus for for future seasons.
- 36:41And then they'll go out into the portal.
- 36:43And, you know, we were talking about this kind of other media
- 36:46guys on the Iowa State beat after spring ball.
- 36:49And it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they go out and and
- 36:53they go get probably 30 more transfers this offseason.
- 36:57You know, they'll need to replenish the senior class that
- 37:00they lost. And then there will be just
- 37:02those junior, sophomore, freshman that they just don't
- 37:05think have a future in the program.
- 37:07And they'll make no qualms about it that they don't have a spot
- 37:10for him. And they'll go go hit the portal
- 37:13again for 30. And then that's the way that's
- 37:15the way things are these days. And it is it is a business.
- 37:18All these guys are getting paid, so that's just kind of how
- 37:21things go. Indeed it is.
- 37:23Good stuff. Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com,
