Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32All right, let's hop right into it here with our next podcast.
- 0:35Guys, gals, why don't you introduce yourself, kind of give
- 0:37us a 32nd, 30,000 foot level of what your relationship is to our
- 0:41great sport and what's the name of the podcast that we're
- 0:43talking about today? Go ahead, Julia.
- 0:47I'll jump in first. So my name is Julia Abel.
- 0:49I ran track at A&M for five years.
- 0:52Coach Mcraven was my coach, and then I got hired.
- 0:55When the rules changed about hiring additional coaches, I got
- 0:58hired as a second distance coach.
- 1:01So now I get to coach alongside my former coach, which is
- 1:04awesome. The name of our podcast is, hey
- 1:07dude, what's up man? I'll let him explain it 'cause
- 1:09he's kind of why it got named the way it is named.
- 1:12But yeah, that's just a short high up view of me.
- 1:17All right, I'm Wendell Mcraven, cross country and distance coach
- 1:21at Texas A&M. I've been here.
- 1:23I guess this is my 14th year at Texas A and MI lost track.
- 1:26How many years of college coaching?
- 1:29As Julie said, it's the hey dude, what's up man podcast and
- 1:36what am I forget to spend what I have to mention here.
- 1:38What's it what's it about? It's about.
- 1:41It's about running, I guess. And yeah, that's about it.
- 1:47I love it and so my question is, well, what is the significance
- 1:49of the name? This is a very original.
- 1:51Oh yeah, I love the origin of the name.
- 1:53What's how do we come up with hey dude, what's up?
- 1:54I'm. Sorry that that idea was Coach
- 1:56Abel's idea, but I guess I was the motivation.
- 1:59Apparently my greeting when I greet people and she notices at
- 2:04last year's convention she was wandering around with being.
- 2:07And I said, you know, stay close to me, you'll stay out of
- 2:09trouble, stay close to me or maybe get in more trouble.
- 2:11And everybody I walked, she noticed my hat.
- 2:15I thought maybe the end of the first day or second day or
- 2:17something like that, Like, why do you greet everybody the way
- 2:20you do? And I'm like, what are you
- 2:21talking about? He's like every person you run
- 2:23into, you're like, hey, dude, what's up, man?
- 2:26And I'm like, I don't do that. And I noticed I actually do.
- 2:29And it's kind of like reading. I don't know why I don't just
- 2:31say hey, dude, or why I don't just say what's up, man?
- 2:35I apparently got to get a lot of words out.
- 2:38So I threw in the hey, dude, what's up man?
- 2:40And, and I, I told her I actually do like, it's not
- 2:43because I don't recognize people or know their names.
- 2:45I really do know the people. And then I introduce her to the
- 2:48people and stuff like that. But but yeah, that's, that's my
- 2:51greeting. So when we when we decided to
- 2:53start a podcast, she she said that would be the logical name.
- 2:56I love it. And talk to us about the style.
- 2:59Is it, you know, typically I'd call it a one person with no
- 3:01guest, a solo podcast. There's two of you.
- 3:03Is it always the two of you? Do you have guest?
- 3:06What's kind of the the style that we go here?
- 3:08Yeah, So far through Episode 11, that's our most recent one
- 3:13there. It's just the two of us now.
- 3:14We have talked about obviously we want to get other people on,
- 3:18we want to get our maybe some current athletes on, former
- 3:20athletes on coaches. We do want to expand it.
- 3:23But yes, at this current moment it is has been just the two of
- 3:27us for the 1st 11 episodes. And I, I love the report you 2
- 3:31have, you know, Julia's being an athlete to Wendell at 1st and
- 3:33now being a peer working alongside him.
- 3:36To me, it's always great because you get to see kind of a picture
- 3:39to the future. So you see his hair.
- 3:41I got, I got bad news. I know, yeah.
- 3:47It is awesome. I I, I will agree with that.
- 3:49What is the I know that you know things can vary min and Max
- 3:53here, but what's the average length of an episode?
- 3:57We're we're right, right in, in about an hour, right?
- 3:59Yeah. We have some that are less, some
- 4:01that are unfortunately more for our listeners.
- 4:03They got to deal with us for a little bit longer than an hour,
- 4:06but yeah, they're right around that hour range.
- 4:09Awesome, and you know, we all start these things for some
- 4:12reason or another. What's the original you about 11
- 4:15episodes in? What was the original motivation
- 4:17to start the Hey Dude What's Up Man podcast?
- 4:20Well, I'll, I'll start it and and let Julie expound on it.
- 4:23But I think one of the things that, that I think both of us
- 4:26independently kind of wanted to, to do a podcast.
- 4:30I, I had a podcast by my original podcast Mike, which we
- 4:34thought was defective. Turns out it just probably
- 4:36wasn't turned on. And, and she had a podcast, but
- 4:39she had taken some, she'll tell you more about that.
- 4:42But she had taken some classes, communications classes and stuff
- 4:45at AMA, you know, that delved into that area.
- 4:49But we were in the that year, this past last year in the fall
- 4:55in recruiting, you know, just taking recruits and their
- 4:57parents around. A lot of parents started
- 5:01mentioning, wow, you guys are kind of funny.
- 5:03Like why don't you guys start? You guys just do a podcast, You
- 5:06guys with, you know, the kind of the banter back and forth, the
- 5:09same thing we do on the podcast. I mean, we just, that's just who
- 5:13we are. We just kind of joke back and
- 5:14forth and kind of RIP each other a little bit.
- 5:17All in good fun. And and we it kind of light bulb
- 5:20went off and I think when we saw you in Eugene at the guilt
- 5:28social guilt coaches social. We had just recorded our first
- 5:31episode that day. We finally got, you know, pack
- 5:35your mics, we're going to Eugene, pack your mic.
- 5:37We'll we'll have time. We'll record an episode, the
- 5:39first episode of the podcast. But yeah, that's that's what
- 5:43kind of led into it a little bit of a self motivation, but then
- 5:45inspired by by recruits and their parents.
- 5:48That's. Cool Julia, anything to add
- 5:49there? Yeah, it, it just, it really was
- 5:52on those like I, I wanted to go into radio broadcasting
- 5:55originally in college. And so I had to take a lot of
- 5:57classes where I had to buy all the equipment and I had to learn
- 6:00how to edit, edit audio and all that stuff.
- 6:04So our, our podcast is actually not audio edited.
- 6:07We just upload the the raw file. But I already had that
- 6:11background knowing how to do that kind of stuff and having an
- 6:14interest in it. And so when I decided several
- 6:17years ago not to go down that path anymore, I thought, well,
- 6:20part of what excited me was having like a talk show or
- 6:23something like that. And so I'm like, well, I don't
- 6:25have to do that as my career. I could have a podcast where I
- 6:28get to still kind of have that be a hobby, not a career,
- 6:31because I still did have a passion for that aspect.
- 6:33So yeah, now it's now we're having, we didn't start it to,
- 6:37you know, recruit with or anything that it's, it's
- 6:40literally just us saying, hey, if we're the only two people
- 6:42that listen to it, then that's totally cool.
- 6:44And who knows, maybe we are, but well, we're not, we know we're
- 6:47not. But the cool thing is we'll get
- 6:49emails from recruits going like, hey, I found, I found y'all's
- 6:52podcast and it's like the first time they've ever emailed us,
- 6:55but they've already listened to our podcast.
- 6:57And one thing we tell them on the visits is like, hey, what
- 7:00you see is what you get. Like the interactions you see us
- 7:02have, like I used to be his athlete, like this is not, we're
- 7:06not Co workers. We didn't meet at, you know, 40
- 7:08years old. Like he met me when I was 17
- 7:11years old. And we have this kind of
- 7:14relationship. This is kind of proof of the
- 7:16developmental and the relationship you'll have as an
- 7:19athlete here. You get to actually see it
- 7:20happen. And so the podcast is just like
- 7:23another layer of that and people from all across the country can
- 7:27now experience what happens at practice and stuff like that.
- 7:30We have our former athletes Will former teammates of mine will
- 7:34text us and say I feel like I'm sitting in the lounge before
- 7:37practice just hearing like hearing coach talk before
- 7:39practice, like this is such a nostalgic thing for me to listen
- 7:42to. So it's been really cool on all
- 7:44fronts. Being I'm gonna say only 11
- 7:47episodes in because I know you have several 100 more to go
- 7:50before this ever phase out, Is it safe to assume that the
- 7:54original idea and form it stayed the same so far?
- 7:58Episode 1 through 11 right there?
- 8:00Probably you haven't had a lot of time maybe to evolve into
- 8:02other styles and formats. Yeah, I think that's, I think
- 8:06that's true. I mean we, we, I mean, we really
- 8:09just kind of turned the mic on. I mean, we've had a little bit
- 8:12of now a little bit of outline, but it's very, very rough.
- 8:15But pretty much we just turned the mic on and go.
- 8:17Do you? Do you do you though?
- 8:18I mean, it took the 8 or 9 episodes for you to turn it on.
- 8:22Yeah. OK, one of the mics gets turned
- 8:25on, maybe not mine, and we go like coach, you need to yell in
- 8:29the background so we can hear you.
- 8:31Like you mumble all the time. You're just.
- 8:33You're getting a preview of what happens every episode right
- 8:35here, guy. This is basically the format
- 8:37here in business, every business, every correct business
- 8:42creates what they call an ideal customer profile.
- 8:45So like for us at Gill, certainly moms and dads will
- 8:48order some equipment from us. We have contractor and
- 8:51construction companies that order for us, but our ideal
- 8:54customer who we are when we produce equipment, market,
- 8:57etcetera, we're focused at the college and high school track
- 9:00coach, podcasters, kind of the same thing.
- 9:03Your ideal listener profile, you're targeting someone,
- 9:06they're going to be other people that may listen and you
- 9:08mentioned recruits and your former athletes, maybe current
- 9:11athletes, maybe coaches, etcetera.
- 9:13Who is your ideal listener profile?
- 9:15Who are you really targeting? Who should be listening?
- 9:20I don't know if we've thought that deeply well.
- 9:23I OK, maybe we haven't refined it as much, but I would say I'll
- 9:26do 2 and that gives a better answer than having none.
- 9:29I would say 1 is just, you know, that again, not using it as a
- 9:34recruiting tool, but like that, maybe it's a young runner.
- 9:37And when we're not talking about serious specifics of training,
- 9:40we got into a little bit of that in episode.
- 9:42I think I'll, I think 10, but we're not getting into the nitty
- 9:45gritty, high level stuff that a professional runner needs to
- 9:48hear. I don't have that experience to
- 9:50speak on that. So a lot of our episodes,
- 9:52especially the early on ones, are like how to run in the heat,
- 9:55how to find a run club. And so I think our target at a
- 9:58very basic level is just the people that the people that
- 10:01think that running isn't for them.
- 10:03And they're kind of like, oh, well, I'm not, I don't want to
- 10:05listen to a running podcast because I'm not a professional
- 10:08runner or a professional coach. I'm not an Olympian.
- 10:10It's like, yeah, we're not trust me.
- 10:12We're not talking to those people.
- 10:13We're talking to the people that are, you know, they're excited
- 10:17about running. Running is a passion and a
- 10:18hobby, but it's not their entire life at this point yet.
- 10:22And I think the other side of that would be we do talk about
- 10:26kind of big picture NCAA topics and, and stuff like that.
- 10:30And so I think on the flip side, maybe some, some coaches who
- 10:35want to take a step away a little bit and look at it from a
- 10:39big picture of like, oh, This is why we all got into running and
- 10:42coaching in the 1st place because it was fun.
- 10:43And that's like a direct quote from Coach Mcraven.
- 10:46And I said it even how he says it, but you got into it because
- 10:49it was fun. And so I think our podcast is to
- 10:51remind, I guess all people that, hey, it's supposed to be fun.
- 10:56Here's some tips if you're a, a starting out runner, Here's some
- 10:59things to think about if you're a college coach.
- 11:00But big picture, it's a, it's a fun thing that we all do because
- 11:03we enjoy it. And that's why I think, not
- 11:06intentionally, but we don't get into the nitty gritty, super
- 11:09serious stuff because there's enough of that.
- 11:11There's enough of that on other podcasts with people that are
- 11:14more qualified than me to talk on that.
- 11:16So I'm going to talk about what makes it fun and exciting and
- 11:18how to make you love it if you've kind of fallen out of
- 11:21that too. That's awesome.
- 11:22I love that. Out of the 11 episodes that
- 11:25you've had, what has been your favorite episode?
- 11:28And maybe another way to answer it could be what's maybe been
- 11:31the most popular? Those are those two aren't
- 11:32necessarily the same episodes, but maybe what's what's been
- 11:35your favorite or what's been the most popular one.
- 11:40You can go first on favorite. It it, it might be the emotional
- 11:45water bottle. I should have gone first on
- 11:47favorite. Yeah, I mean, that might be my
- 11:49favorite one. And, and part partially because
- 11:52it's part of the subject is Al Karius, who was my college coach
- 11:58and who's the guy that means the world to me.
- 12:00And it's, it's something that he taught us in, in and it's
- 12:06technically it's the emotional container.
- 12:08It's not the emotional water bottle.
- 12:09I've turned it into the emotional water bottle.
- 12:10But, but it's, you know, it's something that Al talked about,
- 12:15I mean, talked about before I was in college and continued.
- 12:18And that was 100 years ago. And, and, and I think it's stuck
- 12:23with me as you know, you deal with, with, with, with student
- 12:27athletes and, and people in general that we all, we only
- 12:30have so much emotion in this and how to, how to ration that out
- 12:33in a, in a way to be at your peak when it, when it matters
- 12:35the most. So that's my favorite.
- 12:37I don't know if it's, I don't even know what the most popular
- 12:39episode is because I don't look at the numbers.
- 12:41He is, he is not the, he says he's not the brains behind the
- 12:44operation. So I actually do have the
- 12:45analytics pulled up. The most popular one is our
- 12:48first one. And I will say for our
- 12:50listeners, that is only because we heavily promoted the first
- 12:54few and then the rest of the time we just kind of got caught
- 12:56up in other stuff. And not that the excitement of
- 12:59doing the podcast wore off, but I think we really heavily pushed
- 13:02out. And I mean, we were sending the
- 13:03link straight to people in Group messages and posting it
- 13:06everywhere. So our first 4 episodes are our
- 13:10four first four most listened ones.
- 13:15Yeah, those are my don't, don't judge us all those, those are
- 13:17the worst ones. I will say though, after those
- 13:20four that we really promoted ourselves #7 the emotional water
- 13:24bottle one is the 5th best. So I would say that one.
- 13:27I mean, realistically at that point, we weren't, we weren't
- 13:31pushing it out as much. So I'm going to say that's our
- 13:33most listened to just because the other ones, it's only
- 13:36because we basically forced people to listen to those.
- 13:40But but that one is my favorite one as well.
- 13:42I feel like it has a lot of substance to it.
- 13:44It's something that people, whether they're runners or not,
- 13:47can really take away from it. I, I mentioned it there, my
- 13:49brother works in finance. If he gets out way too
- 13:52aggressively and stuff, and I got Q1 for him, if they get, if
- 13:57he gets burned out in the first part of the year, he's going to
- 13:59be barely getting it through November and December.
- 14:02And so I think that one applies no matter what industry you're
- 14:05in is just kind of keeping in check your mental health and
- 14:08your emotional side of things. Yeah, I love that.
- 14:11You know, our fans, our listeners, we certainly have
- 14:14some group of listeners that have listened from episode 1 all
- 14:17the way through to today, but that's a pretty small number.
- 14:19Most listeners come and go. They'll come in whether it's a
- 14:22subject matter that they like or the time of the year based on
- 14:25their busy schedules or not. But you guys have been there for
- 14:30every episode. You're behind the mic and you're
- 14:31doing all these other things behind the scenes that people
- 14:33don't see that what it takes to put out a podcast.
- 14:36What have you learned in this 11 episode stretch that you've had?
- 14:40Where have you grown? Where have you learned?
- 14:41Where have you evolved as a podcast host creator during this
- 14:46time? OK, I'll start.
- 14:50I think I've learned. They they have not learned who
- 14:52goes fur. They haven't got that that rat a
- 14:54tat down just here. Jump in on this one.
- 14:59Yeah, I think for one thing I've learned is that there there is a
- 15:01little bit of a level preparation that needs to
- 15:03happen. You know, I think the first few
- 15:05episodes we just really kind of shooting from the hip and we've
- 15:07done that and that's worked out OK.
- 15:09But I think you kind of have to have a little bit more of a
- 15:12plan. And and, and we're we definitely
- 15:14haven't we haven't scripted anything, nothing scripted.
- 15:16But we, we, I think otherwise you pretty much soon you run out
- 15:21of topics if you don't, if you don't really have a plan as to
- 15:23what you're going to talk about, you know, So I think that that's
- 15:27preparation is one thing. I I think is is probably one of
- 15:31the keys. Yeah, good, Julia.
- 15:32I'll say the big thing we we learned or maybe just confirmed
- 15:36with ourselves was we got into it because people like our
- 15:39authentic relationship with each other.
- 15:41And so I think one thing that I've learned is that people love
- 15:45that we, the feedback we've gotten is not y'all, y'all
- 15:48rambled or there wasn't really a clear plan today.
- 15:51And, and I guess this maybe goes against what he's saying.
- 15:54I agree with him. And we need to have a, you know,
- 15:56a plan moving forward if we want to like keep having, if we want
- 16:00to grow this thing. But I think in that we also need
- 16:03to stay true to just being authentic, not having it
- 16:06extremely scripted, because I feel like people in today's
- 16:09world like things that are just authentic and we mess up and we
- 16:12don't edit ourselves. And so it's just kind of like
- 16:15sometimes I look at him and I'm like, like, what are you saying?
- 16:18Like I'm giving him like the cut off signal behind the mic, Like,
- 16:21Oh my gosh, no, stop. But I think we want to keep an
- 16:25aspect of that because that's why we got started in the 1st
- 16:27place. People didn't like sitting here
- 16:30listening to us get interviewed by, you know, the newspapers
- 16:33here, that that wasn't the exciting thing.
- 16:34They liked hearing us just in the vans at practice, just
- 16:37talking back and forth. And so we need to keep that
- 16:40aspect of it because that's what people like.
- 16:42That's why we got started. Yeah, love that.
- 16:45All right. Last two questions here.
- 16:46Where can listeners find you? Are you exclusive on any any one
- 16:49of the podcast apps? Do you have a YouTube component?
- 16:51Where can we we find you at? No one needs to see our faces.
- 16:54That's what Coach Mcraven says. So we are on Apple and Spotify,
- 16:58yeah. Perfect.
- 16:59And, you know, we've know from just, you know, general podcast
- 17:03listeners that the average number of episodes of podcasts
- 17:07that a listener listens to. If you're a podcast listener,
- 17:08you listen to between 7:00 and 10:00, different types of
- 17:11podcasts. Take away your track podcast.
- 17:15What is your favorite podcast to listen to?
- 17:19Go ahead, coach Table. Oh no, you said take away your
- 17:21track. Podcast, yeah, no track.
- 17:23We're we're already hitting all the track ones through this
- 17:25mobile series. So what's just a, a, a we're
- 17:26kind of really kind of learning about you.
- 17:28What's something that you like to listen to?
- 17:31Coach Mcraven go first here. OK, I, I really like, and this
- 17:33is going to sound weird for a college track coach, but my one
- 17:37of my favorite podcasts and I, I do listen to it religiously as
- 17:40the College Football Inquirer, Dan Wetzel and Pat 40 and Ross
- 17:45Dellinger and the Pete family used to be on it.
- 17:48They're just I, I just I also, I enjoy their style.
- 17:51They, they keep it fun, they keep it light.
- 17:53They always they, they joke around a lot and I'm a huge
- 17:57college football fan, which sounds odd for maybe a college
- 18:01track and cross country coach, but I am a huge college football
- 18:04fan. The good lesson that we're
- 18:06people first, not our profession first.
- 18:08So Wendell loves college football, which I do too.
- 18:10So I love that a lot, Julia. Coach, do you remember that one?
- 18:13I listened to that when it was like a medical one that my
- 18:16brother sent me. I like, can't remember the, I
- 18:20can't remember the name of it now.
- 18:22It's like you're drawing me a blank.
- 18:23I don't, I don't know, I don't have the I.
- 18:25Listen to this one. OK, I don't like coach Mcgraven
- 18:27can get into all like the specifics of training.
- 18:29I listened to this one. I was actually on a run last
- 18:31year and my brother had sent it to me.
- 18:33When I find you the when I find the name, I will e-mail it to
- 18:36you. But it was a really good one and
- 18:37it kind of went through a lot of like medical research on I guess
- 18:42it was still like a athletic one, but it was not a track 1.
- 18:44He was going through basically bone health and and stuff like
- 18:47that, which I found was really interesting.
- 18:49It was good timing to listen to it as I was transitioning out of
- 18:52collegiate athletics going into, but what is lifestyle fitness
- 18:55look like? What does my bone health in 50
- 18:59years look like? Or if I'm trying to play with my
- 19:02grandkids, can I lift them up? So it was talking about kind of
- 19:05the rate at which all that declines and building that up
- 19:09now. So I was looking at kind of that
- 19:11as I was structuring how I was going to train for the rest of
- 19:13my life after being a college athlete.
- 19:15Yeah, love that. Very cool.
- 19:17And I got, I got. I got one more I.
- 19:19Want to? To, to since she, she, she
- 19:21couldn't come up with one. I, I get 2, but two writers
- 19:24slinging Yang with Jeff Pearlman.
- 19:27He's a, an author every week. It's like every week he
- 19:32interviews a different writer. And it could be not just a, a
- 19:36traditional writer. It could be somebody that you
- 19:39know is a songwriter. It can be you name it, he's he
- 19:43and, and they're really interesting interviews.
- 19:47I, yeah, I he comes out with one once a week.
- 19:49He's he's written a lot of books.
- 19:51He's written the Walter Payton bio, the big one about the
- 19:54Lakers they turned into Showtime series, Bo Jackson bio,
- 19:58etcetera, etcetera. So he's, he's really it.
- 20:01Is he he he really is into the the?
- 20:06The actual into writing like into that as a as a profession
- 20:09and a thing to do and and and so he interviews a lot of people
- 20:11out there. Very cool I.
- 20:13Got my phone out. It was the drive by Peter Attia.
- 20:15Thank you the. Drive good.
- 20:16All right, perfect. Love it.
- 20:18Well, listener, so we're done right with this episode.
- 20:21So my challenge to you is to hit pause, use the exact same app
- 20:24that you're listening to this right now and just search for
- 20:26hey, dude, what's up, man? And that'll bring the podcast up
- 20:29right there. And my recommendation, I always
- 20:31like to recommend listen to the the latest episodes.
- 20:33That'll kind of give you where they are in their journey and
- 20:36the flavor and style of the podcast.
- 20:37But I am absolutely going to implore you and challenge you to
- 20:41go listen to the empty water bottle theory.
- 20:45I thought I echo what those two said.
- 20:47It is my favorite episode of all theirs by a mile.
- 20:50And I love all their episodes. They have had one guy at least
- 20:53listen to every single one of them and it's this guy here.
- 20:56But the empty water bottle, I was so struck by its message and
- 21:01of course, the originator of Valkyrias about what it means to
- 21:04be. They talked a little bit more
- 21:06about it, like as an athlete, but I reflected on it as a coach
- 21:09of we need you for the long term.
- 21:11And so you can't go to the well and go dry.
- 21:14So that's gonna be my challenge. Let's go listen to that.
- 21:16So same app you're listening right now.
- 21:17Just search. Hey, dude, what's up, man?
- 21:19And they'll bring it up and maybe it's the right style for
- 21:21you. Hit that subscribe button.
- 21:22That way you'll know when they publish their next episode for
- 21:25you to listen to. So thanks again for being here,
- 21:26guys. I hope this podcast brings you a
- 21:28lot of joy and entertainment and that it's one for your seven to
- 21:3110 to listen to. Thanks, Wendell.
- 21:32Thanks, Julia. Thanks, Mike.
