- 1:21the plugs at the end of the episode.
- 1:22We got a good one, Noah. Yeah, we're going to.
- 1:24We're going to do things a little bit differently today.
- 1:27We are sans Alex. He had some other stuff going on
- 1:31that he couldn't get pulled away from, so I thought we could try
- 1:37shaking up the format a little bit.
- 1:39We're still going to, you know, we're still watching stuff.
- 1:41We're still looking at stuff on screen box, but I wanted to do
- 1:48this thing a little differently. And then depending on how this
- 1:50goes, maybe we'll do more different stuff in the future.
- 1:53But today we have got a short from a series on screen box
- 2:00called Tales from the Void. Tales from the Void is an
- 2:03anthology horror series based on stories from the Reddit thread R
- 2:07slash No Sleep. The whole.
- 2:09The show is hosted by the host of the No Sleep podcast, David
- 2:14Cummings, and features a handful.
- 2:17I think there's six episodes for now of shorts based on some well
- 2:22known, some lesser known stories from R/NO Sleep.
- 2:26And today the story we're going to be checking out is Plastic
- 2:31Smile, which is based on Betsy the Doll by CK Walker, who if
- 2:36you know Creepypasta, if you know R/NO sleep, if you listen
- 2:40to Creepcast, you know who CK Walker is.
- 2:43She was, she wrote for Haunting of Hill House in Blind Manor.
- 2:47She's written Barasca, Room 733, Mayhem Mountain, all of these
- 2:53like really, really well written stories.
- 2:55She's really, I would say one of the best writers to ever get
- 3:00their start on no sleep. So the way I thought we'd do
- 3:06this is we could talk about the short a little bit and then do a
- 3:11little bit of a reading of the original story.
- 3:14Yes, I think that's a fantastic idea which will spawn into many,
- 3:17many, many more versions of the show, I'm assuming.
- 3:21It's just going to. Keep growing.
- 3:23So yeah, I, I, I don't. Want to ride the coattails of
- 3:26some too many other people out on the Internet who just read
- 3:29creepypasta. But I thought with this little,
- 3:32with the twist of it, having a short made of it, then we can
- 3:38tie it back into our it came from our thing.
- 3:41So have you had you heard the story?
- 3:45Had you heard of Betsy the doll? What was your?
- 3:48Did you know anything about this going into it?
- 3:51So I like many of the creepypastas.
- 3:54I, again, I've said it on the show, I've seen tons of, I've
- 3:58read tons of them, right? Like either from Reddit because
- 4:01I was never a Reddit guy. I was like an old school, young,
- 4:04like 4 Chan kid. So I was on slash X, which was
- 4:08like slash Paranormal, which is still around, but obviously that
- 4:12site is more or less defunct now.
- 4:15But a lot of good creepypasta came from slash X.
- 4:18This didn't fly under my radar like a lot of the stuff that
- 4:21came from Reddit. So I had heard of Betsy the
- 4:24doll, but I never fully read the short.
- 4:31But but if it's anything resembling the short film or
- 4:36the, you know, the episode we just watched for this anthology,
- 4:39My God, that. Yeah.
- 4:42It just, it's fucking sad. It hits you.
- 4:46If you had a bit of a childhood, like I did this, you're watching
- 4:52like there's a few scenes and I'm like just, I shuddered.
- 4:55I was like, oh, turn it off. Yeah, this.
- 4:59I didn't. I definitely can't really relate
- 5:01to it in that way. But I read this a few years back
- 5:06and then in prep for this, I read it again.
- 5:08And when you get to the ending, cause the author loves to do a
- 5:11twist, like there's a twist in almost every one of her stories.
- 5:14When I got to that twist like man, I got, I got goosebumps and
- 5:17my stomach dropped. It's just like it's.
- 5:20So well set up and you don't see it coming.
- 5:23Like it's set up to be one thing.
- 5:25And then at the last second she totally does a 180.
- 5:28So I will just go to for spoilers.
- 5:30If you haven't watched this, go watch this.
- 5:33You definitely can't be spoiled for it.
- 5:36Like if you go if you go in knowing the ending, the rest of
- 5:39it kind of falls flat. So yeah, now that they're gone
- 5:43or now that you're back. After you stop here, Yeah, go
- 5:46watch this or read this. Come back.
- 5:48Big time spoiler time. The doll's not a doll.
- 5:52The doll is her, her little. Sister that fucked.
- 5:55Me up, dude, I was, we were watching it and I'm like, God,
- 5:57something's weird about this doll.
- 5:59Like this thing's like, yeah, haunted dolls are fun, right?
- 6:01Like we all have a fun little haunted doll thing, but to then
- 6:04be like, Nah, it's a baby. I was like what the fuck and
- 6:08just that cop is just so oblivious at this point that she
- 6:11just set her sister down the drain or the the tunnel
- 6:17essentially. That's like a storm drain,
- 6:18essentially, yeah. And it's like, no dude, but like
- 6:24the the cool thing is, I mean not cool thing.
- 6:28The exploration into the psyche of a abused child you typically
- 6:36like for me, I would find ways to escape in my head, which is
- 6:40what this was. This was ways to not see the
- 6:43world for what it actually is or to your your situation rather,
- 6:47which was interesting that even though like obviously she had
- 6:50love for her sister in the story, like she loves her
- 6:53sister, but she also views her sister as like a doll that she
- 6:58cares for and loves. But it's it's, it's her.
- 7:00It's her personal escape from reality because she can't, she
- 7:03doesn't have any toys. She barely has that book, which
- 7:06is ripped away from her. You know, why not?
- 7:09In her head, humans come and go. Her mom comes and goes.
- 7:13Her father's non existent. The guy who lives with her is
- 7:18not really a human at this point.
- 7:20He's just a, you know, they're all drug addicts.
- 7:23So why you? I could see why in the story,
- 7:26she views her sister as a dog. That's something like in her
- 7:28mind is irreplaceable because she's never had one.
- 7:31She's had people. She's never had that, though.
- 7:33The doll, yeah, that was cool. That was really cool to see.
- 7:37Maybe I read too far into that, but.
- 7:39No, it's you're 100% right. Like the whole thing is that she
- 7:44sees her little sister as a doll or something to be taken care
- 7:49of. I mean, her little sister is a
- 7:51like a baby, like a pretty fresh baby.
- 7:54Like less, you know, definitely less than a year, would you say?
- 7:58Yeah, probably like a couple, you know, nine months, almost a
- 8:01year, yeah. Yeah, like, you know, still
- 8:04can't talk is like, but it it's insinuating that the baby can
- 8:08crawl, crawl around because you see some later shots, like when
- 8:12it starts, the doll can't do anything.
- 8:14But then as as the short goes on, you start to see the doll
- 8:17blinking or her face changes expressions or she crawls around
- 8:22the room or she's able to look at a out the window somehow.
- 8:26And I don't know if you noticed it, but they had an effect where
- 8:28the the glass was fogging up from her breath.
- 8:34But then you have this storybook that the little girl is reading
- 8:41to the doll about a, a little girl who runs away from her home
- 8:45and goes down the tunnel and goes to like a magical fairy
- 8:48land. So she's like, in her mind,
- 8:51'cause she's still a child in her mind, she's like, this is
- 8:54what I can do to get away from, you know, this horrible abusive
- 8:58situation that I'm in. And it all essentially climaxes
- 9:02with her putting Betsy into like a basket and sending her off
- 9:08into a storm drain because in her mind, it's the only way she
- 9:13could save her from the life that she has.
- 9:16Yeah, yeah. She sent her off to go live with
- 9:19the other children, like the lost children, basically, which
- 9:22is cool. I mean, yeah, yeah, it's
- 9:25definitely a good, like I said, it's a, it's a good exploration
- 9:29into the psyche of a child's mind when they don't, when they
- 9:33can't quite process truly what's happening and they have to use
- 9:37imagination to escape. Yeah.
- 9:40It's great. And the whole like the whole
- 9:43time for the first little bit, it's intercut between the, the
- 9:49girl who's now grown going back to the apartment that they lived
- 9:54at where her like the insinuation is that her mom died
- 9:58in there. So she goes back there for some
- 10:02reason, I think just to look through and see if there's
- 10:03anything she wants to take. And she finds a videotape that
- 10:08we see the the guy, his name is Zed.
- 10:11I don't really know what his role is in the family unit.
- 10:15Junkie dude who hangs around. In my mind he's like.
- 10:20I think he's either like the little girl's older brother or
- 10:26potentially like an uncle or something because he seems much
- 10:30younger than the mom. Yeah, he does.
- 10:32So she goes in there and she finds this videotape that he
- 10:35recorded, and it cuts back at that point for the extended time
- 10:41to that time. And you see on the videotape the
- 10:45the girl and Betsy as a doll. But then at the end, when it's
- 10:50doing the reveal, we see the same shot that we saw before,
- 10:55but this time Betsy is a human baby.
- 10:58And like that, that reveal is insane.
- 11:01It's so it's. A great reveal.
- 11:03It's so it's done. That's that's that's the biggest
- 11:06thing here. Like you can you can fuck up an
- 11:09entire story with a bad twist. Yeah, you can destroy something
- 11:13perfect and make it literal dog shit.
- 11:17This was not that. This was a great twist that I
- 11:20was not expecting. I was like, OK, cool.
- 11:21We're like in my head. I'm like, all right, we'll get,
- 11:23like, another, like, evil doll. Yeah, like, OK, the doll's
- 11:26pissed. It doesn't want anyone to hurt
- 11:29Betsy, right or not. Angie.
- 11:33Angie No. Her name's Abigail.
- 11:37Abigail Abby. So it doesn't want anyone to
- 11:39hurt Abby. So it's going to hurt things,
- 11:40right? And it's not at all what
- 11:42happens. And I I prefer this because like
- 11:44we've seen it. We've seen the doll that is
- 11:47either evil or is evil towards everyone else but the child.
- 11:51And you know, this was done just great.
- 11:53This was good. Yeah, like you said, they, they
- 11:58really stuck the landing with this.
- 12:01Some of the effects, like we someone pointed out while we
- 12:05were watching it, one of the people in the spawn camp channel
- 12:08at the time, there's some like special effects where they're
- 12:11showing like a bird flying into the tunnel.
- 12:13And I was like, oh, that, that doesn't look that good.
- 12:16And then somebody pointed out it looks like a cartoon bird.
- 12:19That's what I said. Yeah, you, you pointed out you
- 12:22had like a cartoon bird, which if you want to, if you see it
- 12:25that way, it's like, oh, it's like from the book, like it's
- 12:27part of the. Yes, that's what I thought.
- 12:30Yeah. Well, the tunnel itself is
- 12:32whimsical. So when you're when the shot
- 12:34happens where she's in front of the tunnel and it's pointed out
- 12:37where it's everything is whimsical around her and nothing
- 12:39looks like just like a drain tunnel, Like it looks like an
- 12:43actual like, hey, like come down here and live with the fairies,
- 12:46live with the other children. And now you're a part of this
- 12:49family, right? Like it's all whimsical and
- 12:51happy. So that's why I was like, you
- 12:53know, the bird is you're like, this is the slowest moving bird
- 12:55ever filled. And I'm like, yeah, but I think
- 12:56it's like a cartoon because the way it goes into the tunnel too,
- 12:59it's just like it hits the dark and it's gone.
- 13:02Yeah, the, I mean, who knows how far that it's like a storm
- 13:06drain, you know, it's a bit, it's, it's what you expect.
- 13:09It's like a big pipe when you know for water to drain under a
- 13:13road, but it seemingly goes on infinitely.
- 13:17Yeah. So All in all, really good,
- 13:20really good short. I think they set up the twist
- 13:24really, really well. I'm gonna give it 4 out of five.
- 13:27Oh absolutely. It gets 4 out of five.
- 13:29This is done great. The landings, the the twist
- 13:31sticks the landing. It's wonderfully shot.
- 13:36It's acted really well and I just think it it it does what it
- 13:40needs to do. Was this the first episode of
- 13:42Tales from the Void? No, this is like the 3rd or 4th
- 13:46episode. OK, out of how many 'cause about
- 13:49say this? So there's six episodes total,
- 13:52and this is the fifth of sixth episodes.
- 13:56OK, so it it's a strong fucking mid almost ending point.
- 14:01Yeah, I mean the the story that they chose for the last episode,
- 14:04I would love to cover this one. We probably wouldn't need to
- 14:06read the story because it's very long.
- 14:08It's called A Whistle in the Woods and it's based off of a
- 14:12story called Something Walks Past My House Every Night at
- 14:153:03 AM and it's a mouthful title, but it is one of the
- 14:20better stories for sure. I'm super pumped to get.
- 14:24Further, that one's really tense.
- 14:26I hope that we definitely can explore this either, you know,
- 14:31during this set of episodes, or maybe, yeah, down in the future.
- 14:36But do we want to read the original?
- 14:40We do, and for the audience, I'm going to be honest, before we
- 14:43read the original, we're going to have a weird cut here because
- 14:46I have to go pee so I'll. Just do my own thing.
- 14:50I'll just vamp a little bit. We're going to read a
- 14:53creepypasta, but I'm not trying to copy a creepcast.
- 14:57But we are going to be creeping our cast for a little bit, if
- 15:00you know what I'm saying. Big fan.
- 15:03Not trying to not as if I could not try to copy, but you know
- 15:11who doesn't like a good narrative?
- 15:13That's that's going to stay between you and me.
- 15:16What the audience? Yeah, me and the audience had a
- 15:18little pow wow just then. So we're not cutting any of
- 15:21that. I'll, I'll go, I'll comb
- 15:23through. We'll see.
- 15:24I for everyone who's new to the show, I never have to do that
- 15:27anymore. Yeah, usually when Nick has to
- 15:30go to the bathroom during a show, he just does it on the
- 15:32show. It's happened twice.
- 15:36It's happened twice. Go back, go back to.
- 15:38Well, yeah, Go back to the Halo episode of WSD and beyond.
- 15:40What was the second time? Game wards.
- 15:45You did not on the mic when? You left no.
- 15:52Is that, do people know that? No.
- 15:55This is the first here. OK, OK, well, all right, let's
- 15:59some tea. It's only on it came from screen
- 16:03box. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:04That's a screen box. It came from screen box
- 16:07exclusive. But yes, yes, I am ready to dive
- 16:12into that. We have fun here.
- 16:15We do. How do we do this before we, I
- 16:17don't know, really quick. I've been using Tiger Tiger
- 16:19bomb. Why?
- 16:22For my neck. Oh, on your neck?
- 16:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. I forgot I had it on my finger
- 16:28the other day and I itched my eye.
- 16:29Oh my God. Oh my God, indeed I was.
- 16:34Like you ever you ever put that stuff on the Jenny's?
- 16:39Yes. Brutal mistake.
- 16:42I would not. I would not.
- 16:45Mistake. We want.
- 16:47This isn't. This isn't.
- 16:48This isn't. This is not for that.
- 16:50We gotta read a story pretty real quick here.
- 16:53Let's do it. I think you should lead it off.
- 16:56This is Betsy the doll. Like most people these days, I
- 17:00had a fucked up childhood. But who doesn't, right?
- 17:03My father took off before I was born and my mother was left to
- 17:06care for me on her own, a skill she was sorely lacking.
- 17:10My mother slipped right back into the drug addled party
- 17:13lifestyle that she'd enjoyed before I was born and had soon
- 17:17turned our two-bedroom apartment into an opium den.
- 17:20For the first five years of my life, I walked around in a
- 17:22confused, terrifying mist. The smoky air would flood down
- 17:26the hallway from our living room and slip under my bedroom door.
- 17:31It always seemed to linger for days.
- 17:34I know my mother wasn't a bad person, just a victim of her
- 17:37addictions. When she did have spare money,
- 17:39she would put food in the house and buy me new clothes from
- 17:42Goodwill. The only pieces of furniture I
- 17:44had in my bedroom was a mattress set and a little blue and white
- 17:47toy chest. Not that I had a lot of toys to
- 17:50put in. And of course, just the three
- 17:52I'd gone on birthdays. 1 was an art kit, 1 was a little red
- 17:56wagon, and the last my pride and joy was a doll named Betsy.
- 18:01Betsy was my best friend. We would have imaginary tea
- 18:04parties together, sleep together, and even take baths
- 18:07together. Sometimes I even remember her
- 18:09voice. When I thought back on my
- 18:10conversations with the doll in adulthood, I realized that I was
- 18:14likely suffering from delusions thanks to the always present
- 18:17butts of smoke that laid claim to the dinghy hallways and
- 18:20drafty bedrooms of our smart small apartment.
- 18:23You guys can tell we're great readers.
- 18:25Still, I remember the sound of her voice, a pleasant tingling
- 18:28lilt. That's a weird fucking word that
- 18:31was almost always coupled with a raucous giggle.
- 18:35I always remember the things that she said to me, and the
- 18:37things she wanted me to do. She asked me to steal.
- 18:40She asked me to steal usual food or pens and pencils She wanted
- 18:45me to bring bring her forks and knives and hit the hit the bad
- 18:49man who slept on our couch. It was always something.
- 18:52I would always get in trouble. What?
- 18:55Oh, it was always something and I would always get in trouble.
- 18:58I'm on the I'm on the spot here. But she would.
- 19:00But she wouldn't. When I told my mother who had
- 19:03put me up to these games, she would scoff and shake her head.
- 19:07She never believed me. Adults never do.
- 19:10I can do something. I was just around my 6th
- 19:15birthday. I asked my mother for a birthday
- 19:18party. I wanted to invite the Mean
- 19:20Girls from school and serve them cake and ice cream to make them
- 19:23like me. I remember standing in the
- 19:25kitchen that day with such hopes, having just asked the
- 19:28most important question of my entire life.
- 19:31The glass bottle of Coca-Cola I held was shaking in my nervous
- 19:34hands. I waited with bated breath as my
- 19:37mother continued putting groceries away, almost as if she
- 19:40hadn't heard me, but I knew she had.
- 19:43Finally, just as I had failed a second time to muster the
- 19:46courage to repeat my question, she turned around and gave me a
- 19:49flip and shake of the head. A birthday party?
- 19:52Laura, that's ridiculous. I can't afford to feed 15
- 19:55children that aren't even mine. Hell, I can barely afford to
- 19:58feed you. You eat like an elephant,
- 20:00especially for a girl your size. I'm sorry, Betsy does.
- 20:04There's barely anything left for me to eat around here, much less
- 20:07a classroom full of other people's brats.
- 20:12God damn, my face fell as she shook her head, mumbled
- 20:17something else under her breath, and stumbled off into the living
- 20:19room. I heard the music go up then, as
- 20:22then as more people walked in the door.
- 20:24Some left, some stayed. I never knew them either way it
- 20:29it simply wasn't fair. My mother threw parties all the
- 20:32time. What about me?
- 20:33I was a kid, all my friends had birthday parties and now the
- 20:36Mean Girls at school would know I was too poor to have one and
- 20:40they would tease me even more. I felt tears start to well in
- 20:43the corners of my eyes and I and I choked, choked back a SOB
- 20:48while I ran to my room and slammed the door behind me.
- 20:51Betsy was lying on the bed and smiling.
- 20:53She was always smiling. Usually it made me feel better,
- 20:56but today just made me angry. She just kept staring at me,
- 20:59smiling. She was going to tell me to do
- 21:01something bad again. This was why my mother wouldn't
- 21:04throw me a birthday party. It was because of all the
- 21:06trouble I got into because of her.
- 21:08This was her fault. Betsy didn't have to go to
- 21:11school, and Betsy never got in trouble like I did.
- 21:14And in my young mind, I truly believed it was the doll, not my
- 21:18mother, who was to blame for everything.
- 21:20I snapped then. Oh my fucking God, I snapped
- 21:24then. I screamed in indignant rage and
- 21:27threw the bottle as hard as I could at the bed.
- 21:29It hit Betsy on her forehead and she fell on the floor.
- 21:32Good. I picked up the bottle and hit
- 21:34her again and again. I thought I heard her laugh and
- 21:37I hit her harder, then I laughed.
- 21:39When my rage was spent, I dragged Betsy to my toy chest
- 21:42and threw her in. I slammed it shut and kicked the
- 21:45chest against the wall. I never wanted to see Betsy
- 21:48again. Ever.
- 21:50That is Nope I skipped one. I never owned another doll after
- 21:55Betsy. After about a week the the
- 21:58police came and two nice ladies took me to live in a new home in
- 22:02a new state with food and toys and no drugs.
- 22:05The trunk went into storage and the wagon disappeared.
- 22:08I never saw my mother again. As I got older my foster parents
- 22:12admitted that she was in jail doing 25 years.
- 22:15That was fine with me. I never I felt nothing for her
- 22:19anyway. I still had nightmares because
- 22:21of my life with that woman. But then slowly I became I began
- 22:25to heal. I focused on doing well in
- 22:27school and I ignored my mother's letters from prison.
- 22:30She reached out to me several times in my 20s as well, but I
- 22:34always did not declined her calls.
- 22:36That is until this morning. I'm 30 now with my own children,
- 22:40a loving, honest husband. I have a beautiful house, 2
- 22:43dogs, and a career as a social worker trying to make a
- 22:46difference for kids who had a bad like me.
- 22:49I'm happy, I'm steady, and I'm content.
- 22:52So when I got a voicemail from my mother informing me she had
- 22:55been paroled and that she wished to speak, I decided to let her
- 22:59say her piece. Since the kids were home from
- 23:03school, I went into our shed in the backyard to return to my
- 23:07mother's call. The shed was the children's
- 23:10domain and they used it to play in the summer.
- 23:13I sat on my old toy chest, which was currently being used as a
- 23:16tea party table, and dialed the number she had left me.
- 23:20Three rings. Hello, Laura.
- 23:24Hello, Mother. How are you?
- 23:25Oh, Laura, Thank you for speaking to me.
- 23:27I know you have your own life now and a family.
- 23:30I would love to meet them someday.
- 23:32I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for everything,
- 23:35Mother. You are not meeting my kids
- 23:37ever. And since you called me, I'm
- 23:39going to, I'm going to, I am going to.
- 23:42What I have that's written fucked up.
- 23:44That's not me. There's some typos.
- 23:47OK, I'm going to say what I have needed to say for years.
- 23:50The opium, the heroin. They destroyed you.
- 23:53And the worst of it is that you almost took me down with you.
- 23:56I was 5. That was no home for a child.
- 23:58Honestly, I'm surprised it took you so long to get caught,
- 24:02Laura. I know.
- 24:03It seems I know how it's. We will get better at this guys,
- 24:08I promise you. I know how it seems, but I
- 24:11honestly know nothing. Look, it hardly matters and I do
- 24:14understand why you would feel that way, why you would hate me
- 24:17and not want me, want me to meet your little ones.
- 24:20I learned a lot about forgiveness while I was away and
- 24:23just. Oh, Laura, I am so sorry about
- 24:25Betsy. Betsy.
- 24:28I paused, confused. Why would you care about her?
- 24:31I know, Laura, believe me, I do. It was all my fault.
- 24:34The drugs, the partying, and Betsy.
- 24:36Oh God, if I had only paid attention, if I had only known.
- 24:39She's gone, and it's because of me.
- 24:41As my mother began to cry, I tapped my fingers on the toy box
- 24:45impatiently. The drugs had clearly fried her
- 24:47brain. Mother.
- 24:49I sighed. Why are you talking about Betsy?
- 24:52And why do you even care? I know where Betsy is, right
- 24:55underneath me. What are you talking about,
- 24:58Laura? Oh God, where is she?
- 25:00I shifted uncomfortably. Well, Betsy's in the trunk where
- 25:04she's always been. There was a beat of stunning
- 25:07silence. What do you mean, your sister's
- 25:10in the trunk? Sister, what the hell are you
- 25:13talking about? Back on drugs so soon?
- 25:15That's a record even for you. Betsy is a goddamn doll.
- 25:18I locked her in my toy box a few days before you got arrested for
- 25:22possession. Oh, Laura.
- 25:25Oh, God, no, no. Laura, what have you done?
- 25:28I wasn't arrested because of the drugs, Laura.
- 25:30I was arrested because of Betsy disappearance.
- 25:33You always called her your little doll, but we thought you
- 25:35knew. Oh, God, we thought you knew.
- 25:37Laura. No.
- 25:38What have you done with my baby? My mind had gone blank and with
- 25:42no emotion I set the phone down next to me and stood up.
- 25:46I could hear the muffled sound of my mother's anguished cries I
- 25:49and feel the dark clutch of of possibility in my own chest.
- 25:53Memories were stirring in the back of my mind, threatening,
- 25:56threatening to flood forward into my consciousness.
- 25:59They pushed against the door in my mind that had been locked so
- 26:03tightly for so long that I had forgotten it was even there.
- 26:06Was it even possible? Could the trauma and the opium
- 26:09have really led me to believed that a small child was actually
- 26:12a doll begging for food and utensils to eat to eat with,
- 26:17asking me to protect her from the bad man?
- 26:19No. I slowly turned around and
- 26:22brought my eyes down the makeshift tea party table.
- 26:25Surely it was too small. You couldn't fit a person in
- 26:28there. You couldn't.
- 26:29But then what about a very small, starving, emaciated
- 26:32child? What about her?
- 26:34Would she fit? Would an investigator even
- 26:36bother looking for a person in this chest?
- 26:40I knew I wouldn't. It was just too small, and I was
- 26:43sure we had opened the toy box at some point over the years,
- 26:47hadn't we? Or had something swimming?
- 26:49And the dark recesses of my memories always stopped me.
- 26:53I couldn't remember ever seeing it open.
- 26:55I knelt down to the ground and opened the clasps.
- 26:58It would have been better not to look after all that I had
- 27:01overcome this new life that I had earned for myself.
- 27:04It could all be undone by opening this toy box.
- 27:07I shouldn't open it. I should throw it in a landfill
- 27:10and forget it ever existed. I should not look inside.
- 27:13I opened the chest. I never had a doll.
- 27:16My mother could never afford to buy me one.
- 27:19I never had a wagon either, for that matter.
- 27:22But I did have a toy box, a pretty blue and white toy box,
- 27:26and when I was 5I beat my little sister to death and put her in
- 27:29it. God fuck man, I don't know
- 27:34what's the. End.
- 27:35I don't know what's more rough that to the story or my reading
- 27:39of it. Well, then hopefully it'll be
- 27:42fun for people to to listen to, but that is the story that the
- 27:47short is based off. I think they're both really good
- 27:51telling of this story. I, I do lean a little bit more
- 27:58toward the short actually, because I think it's like it, it
- 28:02leaves a little bit more up to your imagination in the sense
- 28:05that there's more like different concepts going on.
- 28:08This one I feel like the original leans more into.
- 28:13Potentially the drugs were affecting the little girl for
- 28:16being around it, which is another interesting thing, but
- 28:18it's very different than what the short does.
- 28:20It's a harder story to put on the screen for casual viewers.
- 28:26This I feel like anybody could turn on watch and you're fine.
- 28:31This read right here is I mean, you can see the drugs in the
- 28:34show, right? But it's the the drugs are
- 28:39affecting the girl in a different way.
- 28:40These drugs are affecting her in multiple ways.
- 28:43The abuse that she's suffering and then she's also getting
- 28:47second hand. Yeah.
- 28:49So that is, but I still also in my mind, I don't, I, I'm, I'm
- 28:56more so I'm leaning towards in both stories that the girl was
- 29:00so traumatized that in her head she was escaping.
- 29:04And that's why both of these stories are so good.
- 29:07And of course, as an adult, you want to rationalize it instead
- 29:10of saying, well, I was a kid, I was escaping.
- 29:12It was the drugs around me where I was being affected by that.
- 29:16So it's it's, it's even, it's more interesting because there's
- 29:19more trauma now as an adult. Yeah.
- 29:22And that's even more interesting to me.
- 29:25I think also like there's a really big difference where the
- 29:28crux of the written story is something caused her to act
- 29:36violently toward Betsy, whereas in the short, it's more positive
- 29:43in a way because she's like, well, I'm going to spare my
- 29:46sister or I'm going to spare Betsy from this life.
- 29:50So I kind of I kind of like that ending better, but it is more of
- 29:54like a horrifying. I mean, in in both versions,
- 29:59Laura or Abigail learns that she either on purpose or by
- 30:03accident, killed her little sister.
- 30:06Yeah, I think it's just if, if I'm Laura, if I'm Abigail and my
- 30:13in my mind, I was rescuing her. That's better than I freaked out
- 30:16and killed her and stuffed her in this chest that I've been
- 30:19carrying around for my entire adult life.
- 30:22Yeah, yeah. At that point, you can just be
- 30:23like, OK, well, maybe she lived, but chances are she didn't live
- 30:27down the tunnel. But but in the actual short
- 30:31story that was written, it's very finite.
- 30:35It's very definite. It's it's also very gruesome at
- 30:39the end where it's like a little girl got so stressed out by her
- 30:44surroundings and she thought she was taking out on a doll in her
- 30:48mind because the doll was telling her to do things that
- 30:51she was getting frustrated with. And then the birthday party
- 30:54comes and it's like, well, I didn't have it because of the
- 30:57doll. The doll was telling me to do
- 30:58bad things. So I did bad things.
- 30:59And it's like, you know, it's, it's it's really interesting to
- 31:04see how those two scenarios play out with each other and how they
- 31:09all they they coalesce to a degree.
- 31:10But I almost wish in the short, the birthday party was maybe
- 31:13discussed. The book I think is the her book
- 31:16at that point is the replacement for the party.
- 31:19Yeah. The book.
- 31:20I like that too. The book and the story within it
- 31:23is sort of the replacement justification for almost
- 31:27everything. I mean, we see that this girl is
- 31:30has like presents normally when she's hanging out with another
- 31:34little girl out and, yeah, who presumably lives in the
- 31:36apartment as well. Well, she's still.
- 31:38Trying to show the other little girl the the tunnel.
- 31:41Yeah, she. Yeah.
- 31:42It's the thing that, like, she has an interest in it and
- 31:45doesn't have anybody to share it with.
- 31:48So then in like a moment of desperation, she she acts on it.
- 31:52And then, you know, you get the context of what actually
- 31:56happened. But really, really good
- 31:59adaptation. We had recently done the Soviet
- 32:04Sleep Experiment, which is also based on a creepypasta.
- 32:07I think that shorts are the perfect form for these stories
- 32:11because some of them can be very long, like some of them that
- 32:15they've done shorts for are longer stories, but it's such a
- 32:19good format for a little thing like this is really well done.
- 32:22Hats off to David Cummings of the No Sleep podcast because
- 32:28this is this is really great. This is really good.
- 32:30I can't. I can't wait to watch the rest.
- 32:33This is fantastic. It, it was great.
- 32:34I I'm very excited for the rest of the series.
- 32:36I have a couple points or a couple things.
- 32:39Did you know I've always wanted to write a short story about
- 32:41something that I had happen in my childhood?
- 32:43Yes. Oh yeah, I've had a reoccurring
- 32:45dream since I was a child about a rug.
- 32:47I was going to say, is this about the rug because we've
- 32:49talked. About this it's about the rug
- 32:51dude. So for context for those
- 32:53listening, I, I since I was like 7 that my grandmother had a
- 32:57circular rug in their, in the little bedroom that I would
- 33:02sleep in when I had to leave my, my, my, my house for reasons.
- 33:07And I would sleep over there And every night I'd wake up super
- 33:11late and I would either need to go to use the restroom or get a
- 33:14glass of water or something like that.
- 33:16And I would like the rug in my brain or my dreams had teeth and
- 33:24would eat you. So the dream was I'd hop out of
- 33:28the bed and then the rug loaded like, like having these little
- 33:35eyes. It would just be there.
- 33:39It would be in the center, but as I was trying to creep around
- 33:42it, it would like open its eyes and slowly look and then open
- 33:45its mouth and say, hey, like you can step on me.
- 33:48I'm soft, I'm nice, don't worry. Like I'm the I'm the safe path
- 33:52to the hallway. And I would in my dream, always
- 33:55trust it. And as soon as I would, it would
- 33:58thank me. And then it would just the mouth
- 34:01would open to the perimeter of the edge of the rug and I would
- 34:04fall into the rug. My God.
- 34:07And it was an endless pit just in.
- 34:10And then I would wake up as a kid.
- 34:12Yeah, the infinite fall. And then I wake up and then the
- 34:15rug is. But the problem is, every time I
- 34:17wake up, the rug is right there. Yeah, and you see it.
- 34:20So I didn't have I had I didn't have stuff that like that
- 34:24necessarily, but my either my great grandmother and my
- 34:28grandmother made some Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and they were
- 34:34in a hanging basket, like a wall mounted hanging white Wicker
- 34:41basket on my wall. And at a time I had AI had a a
- 34:45bunk bed and if the way it was oriented, they were on the wall
- 34:51across from me. So I was just sleeping and I
- 34:53woke up and opened my eyes and looked at the wall.
- 34:55I would just see freaking Raggedy Ann and Andy staring
- 34:59back at me. And then I think at some point
- 35:00when I was like 10 or 12, maybe even like 13, like they're in
- 35:04there for far too long. And I said to my mom, I was
- 35:06like, I hate this. And I they gotta go.
- 35:10He's gone. They have to go.
- 35:11And she was like, she was like, oh, you don't like him, but your
- 35:14grandmother, your great grandmother made him.
- 35:16And I was like, I don't care. Get them out.
- 35:19And now they're they're peacefully sitting in my
- 35:23sister's closet, minding their own business.
- 35:25Then that's where they could. Because she wanted them and I
- 35:27said you take it. I do not want anything to do
- 35:30with that. Do not.
- 35:31I don't want to see them. I don't want to know about them.
- 35:34They can be gone forever, so. Fuck that.
- 35:39I had one last question though. Yeah.
- 35:42With the upcoming Backrooms film coming out.
- 35:46Yes. How do you what do you make of
- 35:48it? Cuz like I feel like for
- 35:50something like the back rooms, you can do something long for
- 35:53him because there's so much you can explore with that.
- 35:57So the thing with the back rooms, most of that movie is
- 36:03original content. The guy who's making it hit, the
- 36:06young young man, he's like 19 now and he is coming up with
- 36:11basically all of the lore that's going to be present.
- 36:14Because the whole thing of the back rooms is.
- 36:17It's based on like one image essentially.
- 36:20Yeah. So he's come up with.
- 36:23It's an SCP. For it, it's something like an
- 36:26SCP, but he's come up with like justification for it.
- 36:29He's come up with lore on how it got there, all kinds of stuff.
- 36:37We will be going to see that in theaters.
- 36:38Oh yeah, I'm. I'm going to be seeing that for
- 36:40sure that he's jangling the keys and I am running towards them,
- 36:45but I'm I'm super excited for that.
- 36:47I hope I hope something like this series gets pretty big.
- 36:51I mean, a lot of people seem to like it on Reddit like I would.
- 36:54There's some stories from no sleep like like Barasca and like
- 37:00the Left right Game that I think would make really good like long
- 37:04form movies and. That'd be cool.
- 37:07I mean, they've they've done stuff like for both of those, a
- 37:10channel on you can find them on YouTube.
- 37:12It's called Q Code, I believe. And they've done like radio
- 37:17plays, like acted and sound effects.
- 37:19And Tessa Thompson is in the left, right game.
- 37:24Cole Sprouse is in the Barrasco one.
- 37:26It's it. And that's another CK Walker
- 37:28story. Really good stuff.
- 37:30Real. Like I really love to see stuff
- 37:32like this. And yeah, I hope, I hope you
- 37:35guys, if you know, if you like this episode, we can explore
- 37:38more of these. We probably will regardless
- 37:42later down the line, but we'll see how we go.
- 37:45Yeah, if you guys liked this, let us know. e-mail us at
- 37:48wasdbeyomd@gmail.com. Again, that's WASD
- 37:53beyond@gmail.com. We want to prepare you for a few
- 37:57things, but we're not quite ready to talk about them yet.
- 38:00We have a very awesome big episode that we are preparing to
- 38:05edit right now. Yeah.
- 38:06We want to make sure this is done right.
- 38:08We want you guys to enjoy it to the fullest.
- 38:10It can be enjoyed, but we're not ready to tell you what it is.
- 38:13And I know that's. Kind of next week, we'll we'll
- 38:16say next week we'll have a more solid announcement.
- 38:20You'll know what it is. It was huge and exciting and we
- 38:25can't wait for you guys to hear it.
- 38:27And there might be another trip that we might be doing soon.
- 38:30Let's just. Leave it at that.
- 38:30Might have sparked something. Yeah, I think it did.
- 38:34Could be hitting the road again. So pumped.
- 38:37There will also be some changes coming to the show down the line
- 38:40that we are not also quite ready to talk about.
- 38:42We are discussing all that as a team, but we think it's going to
- 38:46be for the best for the show in the long run of the show coming
- 38:50up on a full year's worth of content, right?
- 38:53So you'll hear more about that towards then.
- 38:58But it's all good. Like what we're doing, our ideas
- 39:02what what these changes mean for the show.
- 39:04And we'll wait for Alex's Alex to be on and all that because he
- 39:08ain't going nowhere. None of us are going anywhere.
- 39:09But all good stuff. Stick around.
- 39:12It's going to be sweet and it expands this show.
- 39:16So stick around and check out all the other shows on the
- 39:20network that's WHD and beyond. It came from screen box and roll
- 39:23for Deception. All links down below check check
