- 0:10of your Colorado Avalanche. Here comes another incredible hour of Denver Sports Star on
- 0:16the station where you get it all. This is now to two Sports Radio
- 0:22ninety five. Nate Kredman, Andy lindag has gotten where He's gotten, He's
- 0:51gotten where. It's a scop Friday edition of the show Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 1:11This song Jeff Legwell. Time here on a Friday afternoon Craign and Lindahl on
- 1:21Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five. Leggy, I don't I'm not even gonna
- 1:25let you warm up. We're just gonna just we're just getting cal Well.
- 1:30He's got to use the ga let's go. If you want to get ready
- 1:34to rock, my friend, there's a gavel right here. I'm gonna smack
- 1:36it on the table. Jeff Legwald, right now on Friday afternoon before we
- 1:42get to Sunday. Yes, who is the second best quarterback that has ever
- 1:46lived? Wow? I'm sure I can name the first. No warm up,
- 1:52I'm just gonna go under by the ring theory that it's Brady existing the
- 1:57Brady and you almost have to thank you, Yes, who's number two,
- 2:00number two? Number two? Well, if you're going by championships, outo
- 2:07Graham played at ten straight and they and they won eight of them in what
- 2:13era pre NFL? I mean it's pre Super Bowl era, pre rotary phone,
- 2:20pre spiral, probably pre spiral even no, I'm not really I always
- 2:29when people leave him off the lists, it always makes me laugh. But
- 2:31anyway, uh, I think most football people I know would probably go a
- 2:38group of three for the next the Montana Menaja quarterback, Yeah, Peyton,
- 2:45and then Unitis, because Unitis is the last, really of the great great
- 2:52ones who called all of his own plays. Five time first Team All Pro,
- 2:55three time MVP Johnny Unitis and he called his own and a haircut you
- 3:00could set a watch too, and called his own game, which to me
- 3:04is that's he's the last frontier there. That's kind of the last grouping we're
- 3:08saying. Manning didn't call his own well, he called his own, but
- 3:12it was off with a head. You got a radio on the hellmet you
- 3:16got Unitis was their soft these days. Unice was tasked with the game starts.
- 3:23It's in your hands. I'll talk to you between series. You weren't
- 3:27holding up sandwich boards with SpongeBob on it or whatever, you know. And
- 3:30he's kind of the first guy to sort of run the real two minute drill
- 3:34to and all that. So I think you always got to keep him in
- 3:36the county. You're not even putting mahomes in the conversation. He will be,
- 3:40will be do he? I don't. I don't like taking twenty eight
- 3:46year olds to the gold jacket town already. But the guy is, he's
- 3:51the next Brady I if he's spontaneously can busted right now, he's getting a
- 3:55gold jacket probably, So Yeah. I mean I've been in the room a
- 3:59long time. I'm in quarterbacks with multiple Super Bowl wins, and he's he's
- 4:03been the whole thing, you know, creative, big moments, lifted his
- 4:10team. I mean, there's no box he doesn't get to check as the
- 4:14best in the league right now. This is his sixth year as a starter.
- 4:16I gave he goes to the Super Bowl sixty six percent of the time
- 4:23when he's a starter. Yeah, no, it's ridiculous. Yeah, and
- 4:26he just I don't know, his playoff records ridiculous, and I think I
- 4:30I had the stat with you guys the other day, but it's still his
- 4:34last six postseason games. The last six postseason games the guy has played,
- 4:41he's They've only surrendered five sacks and he has no picks. He's the only
- 4:46quarterback in the history of the playoffs to go a six game span and not
- 4:50throw a pick. LEGI you like this one. We had this one the
- 4:53other day. Next gen stats. In this postseason, running three games,
- 4:58he has been sacked on six percent of his pressure to drop backs, not
- 5:01his total dropbacks. When they get pressure, he gets sacked six percent of
- 5:05the time. That's when you start talking about quarterbacks in the draft and what
- 5:10you're hoping for. That kind of awareness you might never see in your career
- 5:15as a scout. You might see it twice. Really, And I think
- 5:18the other stat I saw that was phenomenal was I think he has one ball
- 5:24that isn't considered catchable in the playoffs. Really, I think he has one
- 5:30ball that is not considered catchable. That's amazing. The throat that he made
- 5:36to wrap up the AFC Championship game, it's just phenomenal. Vs. Again.
- 5:41You know, we talk about it a lot here because you know,
- 5:44the Broncos are the Broncos here, and you know it's religion, and the
- 5:49dude's twenty eight. Man. I just you know, and I keep saying
- 5:54it, and I know people are tired of it, probably, but no
- 5:57we are. If your plan is ay, we're gonna go and get a
- 6:00quarterback better than him and then things will be awesome, you better have another
- 6:04plan. You will never get another quarterback, but nobody will. And he
- 6:08will stop winning when he either gets hurt or just tired of it. And
- 6:12I don't get a sense he's ever gonna get tired of I think he is.
- 6:16He's like Brady. Peyton was like this, but Peyton's body sort of
- 6:20failed him, you know, going down the stretch. You know, Brady
- 6:25was still chucking it that last year. His arm wasn't quite what we thought
- 6:29it was. But I think Mahomes wants to win as much as possible.
- 6:33Like, I don't think there's a level of jewelry or accolades that would make
- 6:38him say, Okay, I feel good now. We use the phrase the
- 6:41Jordan era. That's that's what he's in right now, you know, like
- 6:45MJ walked away for two years, and niquim Olajuan, you know, wins
- 6:47two NBA titles and I'm not going to dismiss those titles. It's a great
- 6:50era of the NBA, right, And he went out and did it.
- 6:54But Jordan was in his whatever, baseball, whatever you want to determine,
- 6:58its sabbatical that he had going on right there, Like since since Mahomes has
- 7:01gotten to the league. Let's see, Brady got one because he beat Mahomes,
- 7:05which I think Patrick Mahomes got so much better because of what happened that
- 7:09day against Stampa's defense and then and then Mats that takes sometimes Matt Stafford and
- 7:13the Rams snuck in and got one because Burrow actually went in and beat Patrick
- 7:18Mahomes. But that's kind of it. Like I think there's gonna be guys
- 7:21in this era, and there's I mean Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson and Joe
- 7:27Burrow, and I mean these are these are truly great quarterbacks. These guys
- 7:30will be in Canton one day and yet Leggy like they're not him. They
- 7:35might not win rings because they just played at the same time as this guy.
- 7:39No, it's the Brady impact. Yeah. And you know when we're
- 7:41looking at the quarterbacks of the Brady era and people say, oh, he
- 7:46only won whatever, only well, it's because the other dude was yeah,
- 7:51Breeze Manning Rogers. Yeah. And the ultimate compliment, like a football person,
- 7:56a coach in the league or a personnel guy in the league can give
- 7:59a quest quarderback is if you put him on the Bills, they'd probably win
- 8:03trophies. If you put him on the Ravens, they probably win trophies.
- 8:07How about the Broncos. That'd be tough to drag. But you know what
- 8:13I'm saying, Oh yeah, yeah, if you put him on any of
- 8:16those teams in that upper tier, they're the chiefs. I think. Now
- 8:20you still got to match it. Reid has been masterful and how he's year
- 8:26by year they've sort of escalated it a little bit and changed it and tweaked
- 8:31it like this year. This year, I have been so impressed about how
- 8:33they they did. And not just because I've been griping about it for a
- 8:39billion years, but they went two and three tight ends, They ran the
- 8:43ball, sometimes, they went play action. They put him on you know,
- 8:46they did stuff with him. You know, he's the queen on the
- 8:50board. You can go anywhere and do anything. And yet they still did
- 8:56whatever they had to do to maximize the rest of the roster around him,
- 9:00and that that's the match. I mean, you know, Belichick did it
- 9:03with Brady and he does it with Mahome. I think one of the great
- 9:07evolutions that happened in his career was and Leggy, you know you observed it.
- 9:11It happened I don't know what five six years ago, the sort of
- 9:15the revolution of two high safety defenses and going with going with heavy shells and
- 9:20forcing offenses to have to work their way down the fil matriculate down there in
- 9:26the red zone and we'll take our chances. And that's kind of what it
- 9:30went through. And quite honestly, it was a reaction to Mahomes and Kansas
- 9:35City and for half of that season, I want to say it was the
- 9:39year they went to a Super Bowl against Stampa. They everybody, everybody was
- 9:43like, oh, guy's gone, Oh my god. And then you know,
- 9:46he again, he showed what he is. A sixteen play scoring drive
- 9:50doesn't bother that guy. No, he will never get away from what he
- 9:54needs to do. And he's efficient enough to be able to convert all of
- 9:58those downs. Like that's the gift that he has that maybe the other guys
- 10:03don't, is all of a sudden, like they just miss on that third
- 10:05and four. They don't have any they don't have the patience to live to
- 10:11sort of live with quarterback humility when they're great. And Brady had it,
- 10:15and I think Peyton even sometimes, and I talked with Peyton about this.
- 10:18Sometimes you just snap at some point, you just jacket, you know,
- 10:22up the sideline when you shouldn't. But Brady, if they had to hand
- 10:28the ball off thirty five times, he handed the ball off thirty five you
- 10:31know, the winning part of it never escaped. And that's the feeling I
- 10:35get from my homes. He if he went twelve of sixteen for two ten
- 10:41and two touchdowns in a Super Bowl win, he'd be like, cool,
- 10:45Yeah, I didn't care. Hand me the ring and I'll put it on
- 10:48my mantle with the rest of the stuff. But he, you know,
- 10:52again, he's the alpha, and you know, the great, you know,
- 10:58the one sort of always emerges and an era. But he, I
- 11:01think even he in the world of alpha's, he's even a little more just
- 11:05because of the physical gifts. Okay, let's circle back then, is he
- 11:07the second best quarterback of all time? Today? Not today? Not today?
- 11:11I can't disrespect decade, will you? Will you change your opinion on
- 11:16certain up again? No? You know, I think when you get to
- 11:20double digit seasons, you know, you know, it just it's just tice,
- 11:28the flavor of ice cream you like. Essentially is how a scout puts
- 11:31it to me sometimes when you talk talking about you know, is it really
- 11:35do you like the recent guys because you think situational defenses? You know,
- 11:41unit has faced one defensive look essentially all the time. Yeah, you know,
- 11:46man coverage on the outside, you know, four man pressure. You
- 11:50know, just you know, when a guy blitzed, it was like,
- 11:52oh my god, here comes a blitz. You know. Now they're switching
- 11:56two and three plays on every down. You know, they're rolling coverage.
- 12:01So it's a lot harder to play quarterback now, even off the field too.
- 12:07So I think there is some recency multipliers and all of that. But
- 12:11I don't disrespect people who played, and a lot of that is my Hall
- 12:16of Fame hat. You know, if you dominated the ear you played in
- 12:20and you can't penalize a guy for not being born. Sure, later,
- 12:22but yeah, I mean, if he wins Sunday, he's already in the
- 12:28in the smallest of classes of quarterback, he'll be ahead of Brady and pace
- 12:31age twenty eight thirty and in in sort of an offense that you think they're
- 12:39going to let him do his thing like you never felt like the Patriots were
- 12:43just letting Brady loose. Other than the no huddle year when they broke the
- 12:48the four wide, five wide, no huddle gun move fast, yeah,
- 12:54one word, one word, play calls, when they dropped all that on
- 12:58everybody that that was I felt like that was the only year they really just
- 13:01let him rock, And I felt the rest of the time they were just
- 13:05kind of reeling them in. But it's different with my homes. I think,
- 13:09you know, Andy Reid knows what he's got, He does whatever he
- 13:13has to, and he's not retiring people. Now, why would you?
- 13:16I asked that all the time if you're a football coach, and look,
- 13:20it's a in a lot of ways, it's a hard life. Yeah,
- 13:22you make a ton of money, you're famous, you get free cars and
- 13:26all the rest of it, but there's a price tag on that lifestyle of
- 13:31all the time, every day. But the pressure is but if you are
- 13:37in that vocation, you've waited your whole life. And many, most virtually
- 13:43all coaches will coach and never get a crack at that to go cruise control
- 13:48like he's got I mean it's cruise control. Well, he's in there.
- 13:52I mean, he's just so good at I think he showed more this year
- 13:56as a coach in a lot of ways than he had before because he he
- 14:01really adapted this year. I mean really, like the greatest gift you could
- 14:05give, especially an offensive mind like Andy Reid in mahomes is he can do
- 14:11anything he can think of, right, Like, there's nothing that is so
- 14:15nothing off the board, and they do some stupid stuff. But like,
- 14:18because you have the insurance of knowing exactly even if this doesn't work, we
- 14:24can go back and play it by the numbers for X number of snaps.
- 14:28All right, guys, we got a bronco in the Pro Football Hall of
- 14:31Fame. Jeff Legwald is going to tell us about Randy Gradishar going into Canton,
- 14:37going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Plus Andy and leg you
- 14:41will be taking you home on a what's your piculumne Kansas City twenty seven niners
- 14:50twenty four. All right, that was almost the exact score. I think,
- 14:52really see brilliant mind I went. I think I went twenty seven twenty
- 14:56three in our little thing. There you go. That's gonna do it for
- 15:00uh, for me this afternoon. Yeah, you want to tell you what
- 15:03you're doing. I'm this is cool. I love this. I'm We're going
- 15:05to the to the dads and Daughters dance. It's awesome. I'm happy for
- 15:09you you did. Those are the crush those are the moments. Are the
- 15:15moments. I'm gonna I'm gonna go show off the moves and uh, I
- 15:18don't maybe do that, Okay, you gotta walk the fine line between embarrassment
- 15:22and participation. Lucy's Lucy's young enough, it'll be it'll just be melt your
- 15:26heart cute. Yeah, well, Lucy hits the middle school on that.
- 15:28And then you want to down on the old pee wee herman dance. He
- 15:31wants to break out. I might spike the punch due. That's gonna do
- 15:35it for me this afternoon. Leggy and the rest of the way Krekman and
- 15:43Linda presented by Colorado off Road, Colorado Grown, Colorado Own, Colorado off
- 15:48Road online at CEO off Road dot com. Altitude Sports Radio ninety five.
- 16:02Oh yeah, it's a Scott Friday as we take you home. Nates off
- 16:04to enjoy his evening with his daughter, Jeff Legwalld along Mark Springer working as
- 16:11magic as always. We're at super Bowl weekend. Please to have you along
- 16:18real quickly because it's Scott Friday. I can't wait to announce this show.
- 16:22We have a huge sky related show that we will be giving away some tickets
- 16:26to so be listening next week. We're waiting on the artist to announce it
- 16:30to me. It's a dream combo of SKA bands, So if you're into
- 16:33the genre, be with us next week because I'm excited to be able to
- 16:37tell everybody that this is going on finally, so frankly, it should just
- 16:41be our show anyway, all right, Jeff, you know you've waited a
- 16:45long time for this. It's funny because Randy Gratis Shar has waited forever,
- 16:48right, but you four decades. Well, you get stuck with some of
- 16:55the splashback when it doesn't go right. So how did you feel to finally
- 16:57be able to tell Randy Gradish, are you are, in fact Surrey member
- 17:00of the Hall of Fame. Well, I didn't get to tell them,
- 17:03but I'm glad they did well. But you got but you got to talk
- 17:06to him out of training camp, and now I know you. You were
- 17:07cautioning everybody, this may not be we saw stamp. We saw it wasn't
- 17:11a rubber stamp to two of the committee people that subcommittee. One senior candidate
- 17:18didn't make it, and the coach finalists didn't make it. So remind me
- 17:22who was the coach, Buddy Parker, a former Alliance coach in the fifties.
- 17:27Uh, but again it you know again, everybody was like, assuming,
- 17:30oh, he's it. He kept telling people, well, just there's
- 17:33still one more deal, a lot of work and discussion to be done.
- 17:37But it just went to show you that it is a seven member class and
- 17:41it's the smallest class in a bunch of years. So it wasn't a rubber
- 17:45stamp. But I'm so happy for Randy and his family and his friends and
- 17:49his former teammates. I mean, everybody's happy about it. They I do
- 17:53know. They flew Tom Jackson and Billy Thompson in to be part of the
- 18:00door knock surprise for him. And I think you can see that on the
- 18:03web. If people are fired up there and they're going to show, they're
- 18:07going to show it tomorrow. I mean, they're gonna show the full thing
- 18:08tomorrow. But I think the Hall of Fame put up like a minute and
- 18:11a half so you could just see how Stundy is when he walks in and
- 18:18sees you know. Uh. I think Attwater was in there with his gold
- 18:21jacket on and again they when he saw Tom Jackson, I think he he
- 18:25was practically speechless. So you you've said for a long time that the Orange
- 18:30Crush Defense deserves to have Hall of Fame representation. I said in the meeting,
- 18:33it's the biggest omission in the Hall of Fame. I thought, do
- 18:37you think, because look, I also know, and not just from you.
- 18:41You and I have talked about it. I've I've watched a little of
- 18:44the man's career. Louis Wright deserves to me, will this help him?
- 18:48I don't know. I mean I just look at that, You're like,
- 18:51I just I look at I look at Randy's track, and I wrote this
- 18:55down because I've I've got an enormous file on Randy obviously, but he you
- 19:00know, he he last played you know what was his last year, eighty
- 19:04nine or eighty three? Eighty three? Eighty three is last year was eighty
- 19:08three. He was not a finalist for the Hall of Fame for the first
- 19:14time until two thousand and three, so that's twenty years. So he's a
- 19:18finalist in three and eight, and that's it. As a modern era finalist,
- 19:23you have a twenty five year window. He was a finalist twice and
- 19:30then he was a centennial finalist in the Centennial class, the big class,
- 19:36and he didn't get in. I was stunned when I finished my presentation in
- 19:41that meeting, a bunch of people told me why I think he's in and
- 19:47he was not on that list. That's probably one of the more disappointing phone
- 19:51calls I've ever made to another human being is to tell him that not this
- 19:56time, he did not make it. So again, I'm super happy for
- 20:02Randy and his family and it will be life changing for them all, because
- 20:06I know because every guy I know who's gone through it says it's life changing.
- 20:10So good for him. Well, look, I'm happy for the town.
- 20:14I mean, there were a lot of every Bronco fan. You know,
- 20:17you've heard it all. You've been out to camp a number of times.
- 20:18He needs to be Randy needs to be Randy. Randy's finally and do
- 20:22you mind telling me? I hope I'm not asking you something that I'm not
- 20:25supposed to, but give me the dad. Look. Bill Belichick helped with
- 20:30this a little bit, did he not? You know Bill, when you
- 20:33talked to him, did he not that? You know he was here very
- 20:37early in his coaching career for one year, and you know he gave me
- 20:41some stuff up. But Bill's not gonna tip. He's coached so many guys
- 20:45and he knows so many voters are going to come at him about so many
- 20:51players that at some point he can't say sixty guys our Hall of famers.
- 20:55So he's very tempered when he talks about anybody. But if, of course,
- 21:00he had great things to say about Randy, but you know, I
- 21:03will give you my They have a moment in the meeting when the discussion goes
- 21:11however long it goes, and it's a cat fight, and it's a it's
- 21:15a throwdown because there are only a few slots and frankly, all of the
- 21:22finalists are probably Hall of famers most years, so you're gonna leave over half
- 21:26of you know, two thirds of them on the floor. Essentially, they
- 21:30are not going. So you always know it's gonna be a miserable vote.
- 21:34It's gonna be a miserable next day. Everything's gonna be miserable. But there's
- 21:41a moment after the throwdown where the presenter gets the last word. Okay,
- 21:48and I'll tell everybody the stat I use for my last word. Essentially,
- 21:53there are nineteen people who've walked the earth who've been the defensive player of the
- 21:59Year and a pro bowler at least seven times. Nineteen eighteen of them were
- 22:06in the Hall of Fame. Those eighteen were selected on their first few years
- 22:12of modern eligibility. Randy Gradishar was the nineteenth human being. And a lot
- 22:18of people told me that was a stat they had not heard, even though
- 22:22I had said it in the meeting before. But a lot of voters weren't
- 22:26there in a wait, a lot of voters weren't on the Centennial committee,
- 22:30so a lot of these selectors were hearing all of this, a lot of
- 22:34it. You know, you send out and printed form. A lot of
- 22:38it before the meeting, long before the meeting, and you talk to people,
- 22:42but a lot of them had not heard it in that setting ever.
- 22:47You know, if you weren't in the meeting in two thousand and eight,
- 22:48and there were very few of us left on the committee who were there are
- 22:52even fewer of us who were on there three. So it was an important
- 22:57thing, you know, And I I think a lot of people said that
- 23:00it was an impactful item, and you know, I'm just glad again.
- 23:04I'm happy for his family. I can't imagine how happy they all were in
- 23:10private when they got to find out and just sort of the aftermath of that
- 23:15day. Well, look, I'll just say it. He gave you a
- 23:17big old hug a training camp because he knows how hard you've worked for this.
- 23:22You know, you've done a lot of work to make sure these Broncos
- 23:26got into the hall. I want to ask you something. I'm gonna change
- 23:29directions a little bit, but you know what, so we can't get a
- 23:33chance to talk about this earlier, because you know, it's me and Nate
- 23:34show, and that's just what happens. I went to Larry Zimmer's memorial today
- 23:40and one of his eulogists was Steve Foley. And Steve Foley talked about a
- 23:47different time and it look it caught me and Sean Payton is shutting down access.
- 23:52But he's like a lot of modern coaches. Okay, the access has
- 23:56changed. I think the relationships have changed. But both Dave Logan and Steve
- 24:02Foley talked about the relationship with the media decades ago, not I mean years,
- 24:07but decades ago. And Steve told this story that you know, Larry
- 24:11was a great He was a Cajun, so he had a great nose for
- 24:12good food, if you will, and so is Steve Foley. That's what
- 24:15they bonded over when Steve was you know, part of the Morocco teams and
- 24:18Larry was calling the games. And so Steve told this story about how he
- 24:22was sitting in the defensive backs room sharing some of his mom's gumbo with his
- 24:26teammates and Larry, you know, was going about whatever duties he had that
- 24:30day, smelled the gumbo, went in there and just gave a little knock
- 24:33out the door. It was like, uh it, may I have some
- 24:37please? Because he's a Cagun. Right, no, right, So anyway,
- 24:41and Steve said of course you can't come on in. They shared a
- 24:45meal and he just talked about the relationship between broadcaster or media and the old
- 24:49guard. How different was it back then? Just I thought it was a
- 24:55cool story. Can you speak to more about how maybe it was more communal
- 24:57than it was now? It wasn't communal, there just fewer of us.
- 25:02There's no internet, you know. You know, the number of outlets was
- 25:07far fewer. You know, even in the biggest of cities. You know,
- 25:11there'd be one beat writer per paper. You know in that town.
- 25:18You didn't have the swarm of people. And I mean early in my career,
- 25:26and I tell younger reporters this all the time. It's kind of a
- 25:29bummer you missed on this, because it's really how you learned the game.
- 25:33And you learned scouting, and you learn how to chart, You learned really
- 25:38what to look for. You learned who really got beat and coverage and not
- 25:42just the guy who's running close to the receiver. You learn blocking combinations,
- 25:48you learn all of those things. I mean, I sat with coaches when
- 25:53I covered the Steelers. I would get there very early every morning, very
- 26:00early, and Ron Earhart would was the offensive coordinator and he'd say, hey,
- 26:04lady, come on down, and I'd sit with him for an hour
- 26:07and watch him grade film and we talk and he'd say, what do you
- 26:12see And it was just an exchange. It was off the record, you
- 26:17know, I can't quote him. And when it was time for him to
- 26:21get with the players and everything, he'd say, all right, see you
- 26:22later, and I'd go back down to the media room. You know.
- 26:25It's just, you know, there was just not that. It's not that
- 26:29way anymore as social media is changing game. There's just I mean, there's
- 26:32there's forty fifty media people out are of Broncos practice on a Wednesday, no
- 26:38matter how many wins they have. You know, now, granted, is
- 26:41one of the biggest media corps in the country, and I don't think people
- 26:45realize that. Coaches don't realize it till they get here, you know,
- 26:52And so that that's the just the number of the volumes different. Even even
- 26:56the best teams when I first started covering a league would only have a handful
- 27:00of people around them every day, right which in New Orleans, for example,
- 27:06what in the biggest media And I think that's been a shock to Sean
- 27:08Payton in a lot of ways too. It's just the number of people that
- 27:12are out there every day, you know, and everybody's trying to get something.
- 27:18You know, you're trying to make unique content. Everybody's got a boss,
- 27:22you know, saying what are you getting me? And all of those
- 27:26things. But that that part of it was different Now when they, you
- 27:30know, were mad at you, it was a lot easier to get right
- 27:32in your face too and tell you about it. So you learned. You
- 27:34learned that aspect of the job too. A lot of it is managing the
- 27:38situation, you know, sticking up for yourself, being right, doing the
- 27:42work you know it forced you. You better be right. You're going to
- 27:48say somebody got beat un theer covered. I mean, there's way too much
- 27:51of that in what's written and said now when people don't know and they don't
- 27:55check. Players hate it. You know. The one thing players tell me
- 28:00a lot is they like that I talk to him, I to eye,
- 28:04face to face. I got something to ask, I ask it right to
- 28:07them. They never have to be trying to figure out what I'm doing.
- 28:12I tell them what I'm doing right up front. There's no dancing around.
- 28:17I just tell them, and they say they like it that way, and
- 28:21that's how it used to be done. It's not done enough anymore that way,
- 28:23and I try to help people do it that way because it's the way
- 28:29you should do. He is Jeff Legwalden. Again, we're all celebrating.
- 28:33It's into that's the that's a great thing for Randy and his fan Again,
- 28:38it's you know, there's only three hundred and eighty some of all the guys
- 28:44who've ever played in the NFL over a century, only three hundred and eighty
- 28:48those guys the special club. And then when it's it's the hardest one to
- 28:52get into and it's unbelievable, and you know, you talk, you know,
- 28:56and I see these guys all the time at water and here's them,
- 29:00Zimmerman and TD. And it changes their lives. It changes their lives.
- 29:04Even the most jaded, angry player who's waited a long time, the minute
- 29:11they get the jacket, it's all all good. It's all good. Past
- 29:15no one ever, no one ever asked Floyd Little, how long did it
- 29:18take you get in the Hall of Fame? He just you're justam yeah,
- 29:23all right, he's Jeff Legwell, we're gonna come back. We'll talk a
- 29:26little bit more about this game coming up here as we wrap it up and
- 29:29send you off into the weekend on Craikman and Lindall text Altitude Sports Radio Nay
- 29:34three oh three, five four five, the Shop Moste text line, the
- 29:41Champ Mazda text line, Shaped Moska, one price, one person, one
- 29:45hour, and we'll wrapping it up on a staff Friday. Thanks to Mark
- 30:03Springer that said to maneuver through some land mines here, he's making it happen.
- 30:07Our studio, our studio has been fantastic. Honestly, I did a
- 30:11move when I was at the other place, and you know I've told you
- 30:15I was. When we moved into this new studio, I was concerned.
- 30:18I'm like, man, there's always massive bugs and we've not had any.
- 30:21But today we got a few, simply because I probably said something yesterday I
- 30:25should not. You know, I do the wammie on people. You said
- 30:27the guy had a no hitter. Yeah, I did what you did.
- 30:30Goalies got the shut out. It's a great call. So I'll take responsibility
- 30:36for this one. By the way, a lot of people writing in until
- 30:38you thank you, because sharp means a lot to people. Randy got himself
- 30:42in. But well, but unfortunately the fight of the politics. You know,
- 30:47sometimes you got to go into Congress and push the bill through, which
- 30:49is what you did. It's just the process of it. Oh well,
- 30:52so hard. It is the hardest Hall of Fame to get into. And
- 30:56it's just unbelievable. All right, let's talk Super Bowl that we're yeah,
- 31:00coming up on Sunday. But what are the keys for both teams? In
- 31:04your mind? Well, it's it's really who can have the discipline to win
- 31:10the game because you may have to do things how you don't want to do
- 31:14them, like the forty nine ers may have to run the ball more than
- 31:18they want to because that's the huge matchup with the Chiefs. Chiefs are one
- 31:22of the worst. They've done great on defense all year. They're creative,
- 31:26they're aggressive, they're tough to face, they're tough to figure out. Their
- 31:30coverage looks are difficult. The one thing they haven't done is defend the zone
- 31:34run. They're one of the worst in the league, but they don't face
- 31:40a lot of attempts because people are afraid of Mahomes and they're afraid of the
- 31:45three and out, the dreaded three and out. When you run the ball.
- 31:48That's why coaches quit running the ball all the time. You know,
- 31:51first and ten gain of two run games over, you know, forget it,
- 31:55we're out. But they may have you know, I don't think Kyle
- 32:00Shanahan can call a game like he did with the Falcons when the Patriots came
- 32:05back on him. When they were still chucking it around. They were in
- 32:07seven step drops on short yardage situations. I specifically looked at a third and
- 32:14one the other day from that game where they're in a seven step drop.
- 32:19You can't do to me. Look, you know he knows football, he's
- 32:23a Super Bowl coach, But to me, you can't do that. You
- 32:28gotta gotta have the discipline to win the game. And I think the Niners
- 32:32and the Niners have to find a pass rush they haven't had so far,
- 32:37so they may have to blitz more than they want to. What has happened
- 32:39there? Why? I mean you look at the names, yoh wow,
- 32:43they generated much and some of that is they're not as good at corner as
- 32:50they have been and their safety got hurt. Safety was such a good player.
- 32:53So they've had to adjust coverages and they can't hold it always long enough
- 32:59for the guys to get there. So I think that's some of it too.
- 33:01It's been a coverage issue too, And I think if their corners don't
- 33:06have great games, that's gonna be a tough day for them, because I
- 33:10think and their linebackers too. The one way Andy Reid may pull those linebackers
- 33:15away from the line of scrimmage is to go to that two and three tight
- 33:21end look and force them away from the line of scrimmage. So I think
- 33:25a lot of that's got to happen for the Niners. For the Chiefs,
- 33:29you got to keep my homes clean, obviously, and and I think defensively,
- 33:35you know, they've got to be rock solid on the just in you
- 33:40know, Kyle will be creative with the crossers and the you know, the
- 33:45bootlegs and the misdirection, and they have to be very disciplined with their eyes
- 33:51and their key point, their watch points to to keep things in front of
- 33:55them. You know, if they let Kiddle get loose or McCaffrey, you
- 34:00know, suddenly it's a it's a problem, you know. And I but
- 34:05I you know, I was talking to a couple of people today about it.
- 34:09The Chiefs schematically are a lot like the Ravens and the Ravens played the
- 34:15Niners what week sixteen, Yes, it was a disaster party around there.
- 34:21It was disaster for pretty feign interceptions. I think he was like nineteen to
- 34:27thirty two, nineteen to thirty three, something like that in the game with
- 34:30four picks and that schematically, the Chiefs have a lot of elements of that.
- 34:37So I think that game probably got a lot of traction in the video
- 34:44room this week and last week for the for the Niners, because they will
- 34:47see a lot of the same stuff, and you know, again a lot
- 34:51of it's the moment. Who can be you know, who's willing to take
- 34:55a chance once in a while to Russian extra guy or you know whatever,
- 35:01run a trick, play, do something out of the ordinary, because sometimes
- 35:06that's what it takes to real quick let's uh, let's quick fire. Uh
- 35:09yeah, boom boom reaction to the k Adams stuff, you know, and
- 35:13I guess just we'll call it to Sean Payton meaning today, I mean it
- 35:16was on Rich Eisen he did you know, Adam Shine, he did k
- 35:20Adams. He was all over the place. He was sporting a Zebra Technologies
- 35:24fleet. So maybe they were sporting. They paid him money to go make
- 35:29the tour man paid the way. How quickly do we get the QB decision?
- 35:31That's what they were all pressing them on, when well, they can't
- 35:34do anything else till they make it, right, it's the decision that fuels
- 35:37everything. How active are you in the draft? What do you you know?
- 35:40But could it be a next week thing that we hear the decision or
- 35:44like is constraint on that? Do they have to know when they got to
- 35:46be under the cap before free agency opens? Okay? Top fifty one,
- 35:52top March, so three weeks away? Yeah, I think it's March twelfth
- 35:55or something. Okay, so maybe about a month away. Yeah, But
- 36:00could make it in house the decision and not tell anybody, I guess.
- 36:04But I think if you're going to say he and Russ have a great relationship,
- 36:08I think you would give them the most time possible to find a new
- 36:12place. But yeah, I mean I think some of the He definitely had
- 36:17more of it. I mean I asked him specifically at the end of the
- 36:21season, would you keep us? Is there a scenario where you keep us?
- 36:23And he kept saying well, yes, Otherwise it would have been said,
- 36:27Hey goodbye, you know. That was his quote to me when I
- 36:30asked the question. So they have laid this scenario out that there is this
- 36:36sort of possibility they keep them, but nobody in the league believes it.
- 36:40I think they're hoping to at least get enough believability where there if there is
- 36:46a trade out there in the unlikely event, and I mean unlikely event,
- 36:52that there is a trade partner out there, that they would come forward if
- 36:55they didn't think you were really going to cut them real quick on that trade
- 37:00him. Can they still break the cap hit up? Or is that eat
- 37:01the cab? Still? That dead money still crushes you. But you could
- 37:05get some of the cash part of it, gotcha, you can negotiate some
- 37:08of the dead money. Is the dead money? Sure, they can't fix
- 37:12that. But it would have to be all eighty four million, I think
- 37:15the So it'd be that would be the real big hit. Yeah, that'd
- 37:20be the Matza ball. It would be the It would be the most over
- 37:23two years if they release them. It would certainly be the most ever for
- 37:29any team in one year if they trade them. All right, so that's
- 37:32the interesting stuff, all right, tell me who's winning this thing. I
- 37:37still like the Chiefs in a close game just because of sort of the Mahomes
- 37:40factor. Now, talent, you know, one to fifty three. Sam
- 37:45Jisco probably has a little more talent on that roster, but the quarterback means
- 37:49a lot. It's a big ask of purty no matter what. It's a
- 37:54big ask for any quarterback who has not been in that situation. And it
- 37:59is the one time where I honestly think Super Bowl experience matters. I don't
- 38:06think it matters much at left tackle. I don't think it matters much as
- 38:08safety. It does matter at quarterback because managing your emotions. Again, if
- 38:15you play football for a living, it does hit you at some point,
- 38:19either during the anthem or when you run out for the warm ups or during
- 38:23the ninety minute halftime. You know it hits you at some point. You
- 38:29may never get this again, you may never play in this game again in
- 38:35your career, and it hits you. And the people who can manage that
- 38:38do the best. All right, Well, he is Jeff Lakeweald, So
- 38:42there it goes. Uh. I want to pick the Niners, but I
- 38:49can. I mean, locally, you know it'd be cool for you're about
- 38:54the seeds again and Kyle. You know I used to see Kyle out of
- 38:58practice. Yeah, like you know, a college kid, you know,
- 39:01high school kid, you know, Christian McCaffrey. Yeah, you know,
- 39:05it'd be cool if some of those guys a bit get a ring. Sure,
- 39:09all right, well, everybody have fun. I'll try to tweet out
- 39:12a little drinking game that we'd put good. Have good snacks. Wings are
- 39:15dip? I don't know what's on the my docket. What would you prefer
- 39:20wings or dip? I don't know, pretty dip? All right, popper
- 39:25and popped it yet again. He's Jeff Blake, while we always love having
- 39:30him along. And Mark Springer produces this show for my partner Nate Crekman.
- 39:34I am Andy Linda. All everyone, enjoy your Super Bowl weekend. Burdos
- 39:37coming up next with a little bit of the Blitz, and then the Nuggets
- 39:39and the Kings will play a little basketball tonight. Also, if you're around,
- 39:44check out the Colorado manmut they're trying to get back on the winning track
- 39:46against Panthers City down in Dallas. Good Night, all,
