- 0:00Hey everyone-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, and I've got Edwin Carrington here with me.
- 0:05Edwin, how are you today?
- 0:05I'm doing well,
- 0:08Claire.
- 0:09Always good to be here-especially for this topic.
- 0:11Gen Z.
- 0:13This isn't a generation that's coming-they're already here.
- 0:16And they're changing the game.
- 0:16Right?
- 0:19And it's kind of wild-by 2025,
- 0:21Gen Z's gonna be almost a third of the workforce.
- 0:23Like... that's huge.
- 0:24I remember when I started out,
- 0:26and even back then, I was already craving something deeper.
- 0:28Not just the, you know, the free LaCroix or the ping-pong table,
- 0:31but like-does this job actually matter?
- 0:33And now?
- 0:34Gen Z is basically saying, "That's the starting point."Exactly.
- 0:38They're not dabbling in these ideas-they're demanding them.
- 0:42Purpose, flexibility, transparency,
- 0:45inclusion-these aren't perks.
- 0:47They're expectations.
- 0:49And what's more, Gen Z is highly diverse and fully digital.
- 0:53They grew up Googling everything.
- 0:55They'll see right through the fluff.
- 0:57If your culture or hiring feels performative or stuck in the past... they
- 1:01won't stick around to give you feedback.
- 1:03They'll just move on.
- 1:03Totally.
- 1:05Like, older generations might've tolerated a clunky application portal
- 1:09or a vague mission statement.
- 1:10Gen Z?
- 1:11They'll just-what's the phrase?-swipe left.
- 1:14They want clarity.
- 1:14They want alignment.
- 1:15And if you're not showing who you really are,
- 1:18they're gone.
- 1:18And it's not just about getting them through the door-it's
- 1:22about keeping them.
- 1:23If your hiring playbook hasn't changed since 2010,
- 1:26you're playing the wrong game.
- 1:28Gen Z is forcing organizations to evolve-how they recruit,
- 1:32how they build teams, how they communicate values.
- 1:35It's not a disruption-it's a recalibration.
- 1:35Okay,
- 1:39so let's break it down.
- 1:40What does Gen Z actually want-from that first click on a job ad,
- 1:44all the way through onboarding?
- 1:45Because the real challenge isn't finding talent.
- 1:48It's building a place where they want to stay.
- 1:48So,
- 1:50first up-the application process.
- 1:53Gen Z is the first generation that's fully digital-native.
- 1:56They expect everything to just... work.
- 1:59Seamlessly.
- 2:00If your site's slow or the form takes forever,
- 2:02they're out before they even apply.
- 2:02And it's not just about tech,
- 2:06it's about trust.
- 2:07They're not evaluating you only on design-they're reading your vibe.
- 2:11Are you transparent?
- 2:13Are you human?
- 2:14If your site looks like it's from 2006 and still asks for a fax number...
- 2:19that sends a message.
- 2:19Ha-seriously.
- 2:21And you know what really lands with them?
- 2:23Realness.
- 2:24Like, I've seen companies let employees take over their Instagram for
- 2:27a day, or post unfiltered behind-the-scenes stories.
- 2:30That kind of authenticity?
- 2:32It speaks louder than any list of perks.
- 2:32It does.
- 2:36Because authenticity builds connection.
- 2:39And once they're in the process,
- 2:41communication becomes critical.
- 2:42Gen Z expects fast feedback.
- 2:46Silence doesn't just feel rude-it feels like disorganization.
- 2:50Even a quick "We're still reviewing your CV" can keep them engaged.
- 2:50Totally.
- 2:55And hey, just text them.
- 2:56I mean, email's great, but a lot of Gen Z sees email the way we saw voicemail.
- 3:01They don't love it.
- 3:02Keep it frictionless, and you'll stand out.
- 3:02Now,
- 3:04post-offer is where it really counts.
- 3:06Gen Z isn't playing around when it comes to mental health and balance.
- 3:10It's not a nice-to-have-it's non-negotiable.
- 3:10That's right.
- 3:13Things like mental health days,
- 3:14flexible schedules, setting boundaries with after-hours emails-these
- 3:19aren't radical ideas anymore.
- 3:20They're signals.
- 3:22And those signals tell Gen Z whether you actually live your values.
- 3:22Exactly.
- 3:27And one of the biggest signals?
- 3:28Career growth.
- 3:29If they can't see how they're going to develop with you-they're not staying.
- 3:33Vague lines like "we invest in our people" won't cut it.
- 3:36Show them the map.
- 3:37Mentorship, upskilling, internal mobility-give it structure.
- 3:37We touched
- 3:43on this in our episode on retention-how the real driver isn't just perks.
- 3:47It's progress.
- 3:48Gen Z is just turning up the volume on that truth.
- 3:51They're not afraid to leave if they feel stuck.
- 3:51And here's a big one:
- 3:55inclusion.
- 3:56For Gen Z, if your leadership team looks like a copy-paste of the same
- 4:00profile-and your DEI efforts feel like a checkbox-they'll notice.
- 4:04And they won't just be disappointed.
- 4:06They'll disengage.
- 4:06Right.
- 4:08Diversity isn't a trend.
- 4:10It's foundational.
- 4:11And not just at the entry level-representation and voice need to
- 4:11show
- 4:15up at every layer of the organization.
- 4:15Okay,
- 4:18if you're sitting there thinking,
- 4:20"Wow, we've got a long way to go"-you're not alone.
- 4:22But honestly, small things matter.
- 4:25Even just cleaning up your careers page,
- 4:27or being more transparent in interviews-it creates momentum.
- 4:27It's not
- 4:31about overhauling everything overnight.
- 4:33It's about meeting Gen Z where they are.
- 4:35Understanding what matters to them.
- 4:37And then proving-consistently-that you mean it.
- 4:37So how do you keep Gen
- 4:42Z engaged long-term?
- 4:43It's not about adding more perks.
- 4:45It's about living your values.
- 4:47Feedback, inclusion, purpose-that's the baseline now.
- 4:47And here's the catch-Gen
- 4:52Z can spot surface-level change from a mile away.
- 4:55A diversity statement on your site won't impress them if it's not backed
- 4:58by action.
- 4:59They want real mentorship.
- 5:01Real development.
- 5:02Real impact.
- 5:02Like, think Patagonia.
- 5:05Or Salesforce.
- 5:06They're not just saying they care about purpose-they're baking it into
- 5:09their hiring, their culture, everything.
- 5:12And sure, they're big brands, but any company can start where they are.
- 5:15Listen.
- 5:16Invest.
- 5:17Make diversity visible.
- 5:17Exactly.
- 5:19And sometimes the most powerful shifts aren't splashy-they're personal.
- 5:24Leaders creating safe spaces, giving honest feedback,
- 5:28showing they actually care.
- 5:29That's how trust gets built.
- 5:29And that trust?
- 5:32That's how you keep people.
- 5:34Because when someone feels seen,
- 5:36heard, and challenged to grow-they stay.
- 5:36We've seen it time and again.
- 5:40When you build an inclusive, values-driven culture-you don't just hire
- 5:44better.
- 5:45You build a team that's aligned,
- 5:47agile, and ready for whatever's next.
- 5:47So if you're serious about staying
- 5:51ahead-start with this: real purpose,
- 5:54real growth, real inclusion.
- 5:56Gen Z isn't a disruption.
- 5:58They're a wake-up call.
- 5:59And honestly... I think they're exactly what we need.
- 5:59Couldn't agree more.
- 6:04And if you're wondering how to actually do this-how to assess fit,
- 6:08hire smarter, or align your team-we've made it easy to test out OAD's
- 6:12behavioral tools.
- 6:13You can try them for free at o-a-d-dot-a-i.
- 6:13Such a great resource.
- 6:18And that's it for today-thank you,
- 6:20Edwin!
- 6:20And thanks to all of you for joining us on The Science of Leading.
- 6:23We'll be back soon with more on building smarter teams and better workplaces.
- 6:23Always
- 6:28a pleasure, Claire.
- 6:29Take care, everyone.
- 6:29Bye for now!
