- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everyone, Welcome. It's the U CUT Women's Basketball Coaches Show,
- 0:02Speaker 1: our final one of the season. I'm Bob Joyce with
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame head coach Geno Oriema as the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Husky is coming off another regular season Big East championship
- 0:11Speaker 1: and the Big East Tournament that gets underway Saturday against
- 0:13Speaker 1: either Saint John's or Butler Well. Gino two wins this
- 0:18Speaker 1: week over Creighton and Marquette, and the common theme is
- 0:22Speaker 1: pressure defense, particularly off the inbounds in the well, particularly
- 0:26Speaker 1: in the first and second quarters of the two games,
- 0:30Speaker 1: where you go to your small lineup, you start pressing
- 0:33Speaker 1: the heck out of them and just denying on the inbounds.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I mean, so many five second calls, so many turnovers
- 0:38Speaker 1: off inbounds the last couple of games. And you know,
- 0:41Speaker 1: it's amazing how things work when you decide to guard
- 0:43Speaker 1: the on the inbound all of a sudden and get
- 0:46Speaker 1: all the turnovers they had I think twenty one points
- 0:48Speaker 1: off turnovers in each of the last two games against
- 0:51Speaker 1: pretty good, pretty good teams in the Big East.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I mean, it's hard to explain other than we have
- 0:57Speaker 3: spent some time on it, and we're going to spend
- 1:00Speaker 3: some more time on it this week, and I think
- 1:02Speaker 3: once it happens, I think inbounders get a little bit
- 1:06Speaker 3: gun shy kids don't work as hard to get open.
- 1:10Speaker 2: You know. We added Aubrey to the list of people
- 1:13Speaker 2: out there.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Doing some putting on some of the pressure, and she's
- 1:17Speaker 3: different than anybody we have, so I think we're working
- 1:20Speaker 3: harder at it. We've vamped up the pressure a little bit,
- 1:23Speaker 3: starting with the inbounds pass a while there. All we
- 1:27Speaker 3: were doing was trying to put pressure after the ball
- 1:31Speaker 3: been inbounded, and I mean that's fine, but it's not
- 1:34Speaker 3: nearly as effective as as what you've seen in the
- 1:37Speaker 3: last couple of games. So it doesn't always work. When
- 1:41Speaker 3: it's not done great like we had that this weekend.
- 1:44Speaker 3: You give up open threes, which is probably why a
- 1:47Speaker 3: lot of teams don't press as much as they used to.
- 1:49Speaker 3: You know, used to give up a two. So what now?
- 1:53Speaker 3: You know, we gave up back to back threes the
- 1:55Speaker 3: other day to start the game. And so it's effective
- 1:59Speaker 3: as long as you can get back in time, and
- 2:02Speaker 3: we'll see where it takes us. You know, I think
- 2:05Speaker 3: as long as it's effective, you know, we can we
- 2:07Speaker 3: can keep using it, you know, we might have to
- 2:09Speaker 3: change up.
- 2:10Speaker 2: What it looks like, sure, which I like to do.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But let's see what happens this weekend.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Right with the depth that you have now and that
- 2:18Speaker 1: one included in South Carolina where you knew you had
- 2:20Speaker 1: to mix up your defenses and it certainly helps to
- 2:22Speaker 1: see the ball go in the basket. But now you
- 2:24Speaker 1: have all these pieces that you didn't have in the
- 2:27Speaker 1: last couple of years and able to do different things defensively.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 2:32Speaker 3: In order to play that way, a couple of things
- 2:34Speaker 3: come into play.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You can't foul. I mean, it.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Defeats the whole purpose if you're going to if you're
- 2:39Speaker 3: going to press like that and then foul. And you
- 2:43Speaker 3: have to be able to substitute, keep fresh legs out there.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And we do have more more opportunities, more bodies to
- 2:51Speaker 3: do that with this year. And the final piece of
- 2:55Speaker 3: that is you have to be able to shoot with
- 2:59Speaker 3: someone tired legs, you know, because if you're going like
- 3:03Speaker 3: that NonStop, you're gonna get worn down a little bit quicker.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And you know that's the other thing. You do have
- 3:09Speaker 2: to practice shooting.
- 3:11Speaker 3: When you know when you're tired, and there's a lot
- 3:15Speaker 3: of things that come into it, you know, but the
- 3:18Speaker 3: points off turnovers is worth it. Causing the other team
- 3:21Speaker 3: to play much much faster than they want to play.
- 3:24Speaker 3: You know, there's so many benefits to it. You just
- 3:27Speaker 3: got to manage the downside to it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Do you sense with some of your veterans now now
- 3:31Speaker 1: that we are into March, they're getting a little bit
- 3:34Speaker 1: cranked up again because February sometimes, okay, outside the South
- 3:38Speaker 1: Carolina games, February can be a bit of a grind
- 3:41Speaker 1: where you're just trying to fight through the wall and
- 3:43Speaker 1: you see March coming. Now March is here. Do you
- 3:45Speaker 1: see a little extra pep in their step? Knowing that
- 3:49Speaker 1: now there are you know what March is all about
- 3:51Speaker 1: at Yukon, You know what the expectations are.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I do.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I mean you have to try to you have to
- 3:58Speaker 3: try to prepare for that in February. By you can't
- 4:03Speaker 3: exhaust every player in practice during the month of February.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You have to cut practice is shorter.
- 4:10Speaker 3: You have to change the way you practice in February
- 4:13Speaker 3: because if they're exhausted, it's not easy to all of
- 4:17Speaker 3: a sudden flip the switch and be good to go
- 4:19Speaker 3: in March. You know, I think we've managed to do that.
- 4:22Speaker 3: And now the good thing is we had this week
- 4:26Speaker 3: to get ready and then it's three games in three
- 4:29Speaker 3: days and then we don't play again for twelve days
- 4:30Speaker 3: or whatever it is thirteen days. So it's a delicate
- 4:34Speaker 3: thing that you're trying to manage, and so far, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 3: seems like knock on wood. These last couple of years.
- 4:41Speaker 3: We've well, the last thirty years, you know, we've we've
- 4:45Speaker 3: handled it. We've handled it pretty well. So let's hope
- 4:49Speaker 3: it's still there.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, the banners on the wall would be testament to that.
- 4:52Speaker 1: We're with geno Orium on this Wednesday night ahead of
- 4:55Speaker 1: the Yukon Men and Marquette. They're coming up at eight o'clock.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Right now, we'll take our first break on you kind
- 5:00Speaker 1: of women's basketball coach a show here Onlearfield.
