- 1:31Today I sit down with Caitlin Pavey.
- 1:34She has a powerful story That First Capital Films and Kappa
- 1:38Studio produced a featured length movie called I Can that
- 1:43was in theaters across the nation about Caitlin's life.
- 1:48Caitlin has this remarkable journey of being born with one
- 1:52arm and how that didn't stop her from being the greatest star
- 1:57softball player to grace the fields.
- 2:00Her story is one of tremendous perseverance, endurance, and
- 2:06triumph, with the power of God's grace and strength to get
- 2:10through major adversity. She has the biggest heart, you
- 2:14guys, for God, and has such audacious ambitions and goals.
- 2:19You'll be so inspired by her and the hope and the encouragement
- 2:22she gives to others that they too can experience God's
- 2:26possibility when it feels impossible.
- 2:29So let's dive in. Here's my conversation with
- 2:33Caitlin Pavey. Hey Caitlin, welcome to She
- 2:36Speaks Life. I am so excited you are here
- 2:39with us to share your powerful story with us.
- 2:42Welcome. Well, thank you for having me.
- 2:44I'm excited. Do you have a very powerful and
- 2:47inspirational story to share? And in fact, I believe it was
- 2:53First Capital Films and Kappa Studios that did this incredible
- 2:57job in featuring your true story in a featured length film and in
- 3:05theaters across the country. And I can't wait to dive in more
- 3:10for you to share this journey with us.
- 3:13But before we begin, I love kicking off with the guests
- 3:17sharing their favorite scripture verse and why.
- 3:20So my favorite verse is John 1633.
- 3:24It's kind of what I stuck with with through my softball playing
- 3:27career and it and it says in this world you will have
- 3:31trouble. But take heart, for I have
- 3:32overcome the world. And for me, this is really
- 3:36important because it means that you know, no matter what you go
- 3:39through, no matter you know, when sports, no matter the wins,
- 3:43no matter the losses, you already have the victory.
- 3:46Because Jesus died for you and he died for your sins.
- 3:49So you already have that victory.
- 3:51Yes. Amen.
- 3:52Thank you, Jesus. That's a powerful verse.
- 3:55And so you have this remarkable journey, Caitlin, on
- 3:59perseverance and triumph and the power of God's grace to get you
- 4:05through some major adversity. And would you just love to start
- 4:11us out by sharing your story? Let's get to know you and how
- 4:16this movie called I Can came about.
- 4:19Yeah, so the movie I can came about my church, First Capital
- 4:23Christian Church in Corden, Indiana.
- 4:26You know we make movies. So my pastor, Tyler Sansom.
- 4:30Ever since he was little, he wanted to make movies and he
- 4:32said what not a better way for as a mission field to reach
- 4:36people to than to make movies. And so he wanted to do movies
- 4:40out of the real people, out of our church.
- 4:42And he knew a little bit about my background and my parents
- 4:44background and asked us. Well, the story about me was I
- 4:48was conceived out of wedlock due to an affair and my parents
- 4:52always thought that their sin caused me to be born with one
- 4:54arm. So I was born with one arm.
- 4:57It's called Focal Milia. And so I was basically born
- 5:01without the in part of my arm where the elbow meets and then
- 5:05it left me with a small hand and two digits.
- 5:07And so this story I can came about because of that.
- 5:12And Tyler has asked us three times if we wanted to make this
- 5:16movie and every every single time we denied him, we said no.
- 5:20And you know, the reason we said no was we didn't think we had a
- 5:23story to share. All of our sins are going to be
- 5:25displayed on the big screen. And my parents didn't want to do
- 5:28that. And personally, I didn't want to
- 5:30be seen. Like I sit on a pedestal.
- 5:32You know, everybody has a story. I have one arm play softball.
- 5:36So what? But Tyler said, if you can help
- 5:39one person find and follow Jesus, would you do it?
- 5:42And that's the mission of our church.
- 5:44If you can help one person find and follow Jesus, would you do
- 5:47it? And I said yes, and my parents
- 5:48said yes. So that's what led us to make
- 5:51this movie. And I Can is a redemption story
- 5:54and a story of me growing up through softball and I became a
- 5:59all American softball player in college and just overcoming all
- 6:02the adversity and things that came my way.
- 6:04So cool, Caitlin. So take us through playing
- 6:09softball with one arm. Was it extremely challenging and
- 6:15hard, or was it something you just felt God supernaturally
- 6:20giving you this gift and ability to perform well?
- 6:26Well, I started playing softball at the age of three and you
- 6:30know, at first it was very difficult, very challenging
- 6:33because you know how am I going to catch with one hand and throw
- 6:36with the same hand at the same time?
- 6:37And my dad, you know, how are you going to coach a kid with
- 6:41one arm, how to play softball. So at first it was very
- 6:44challenging, but I think softball.
- 6:47Once I overcame that challenge was something that I thought I
- 6:50was good at and where I could express myself.
- 6:53That makes sense. It let me, you know, show my
- 6:56abilities and talents that God gave me.
- 6:58So cool. Did you become a Christian at a
- 7:01young age? I did.
- 7:03I grew up in a Christian household, so I always went to
- 7:06church on Sundays, on Wednesday nights and.
- 7:09I got baptized in high school. So cool.
- 7:11And I read that you were a center fielder in softball.
- 7:16Is that correct? Yes, I played center field.
- 7:20I actually pitched and played first base when I was growing
- 7:23up. Yeah, and to get recruited, I
- 7:26went to a few college showcase camps.
- 7:29And coaches were like, have you ever tried to play outfield?
- 7:31And like you can get recruited maybe playing that position.
- 7:34And so I transferred and I end up loving outfield.
- 7:37And that's where I ended up playing all throughout my
- 7:39college career. Incredible 'cause you got to
- 7:42have a powerful arm to throw that softball.
- 7:46I I was actually recorded .2 seconds slower.
- 7:49I have a what's called a glove transfer.
- 7:51So I catch with my right hand. I tuck the glove underneath my
- 7:54small arm, grab the ball out and throw it.
- 7:56Yeah, .2 seconds slower than somebody with two arms.
- 7:59Wow. Oh incredible.
- 8:02Caitlin. Yay.
- 8:03God, right. Yes, All them.
- 8:06The glory. So cool.
- 8:08And so when this movie came out, how does how did that make you
- 8:12feel when you saw your true story in theaters everywhere?
- 8:19Was it just surreal or? It was very surreal.
- 8:23And it was crazy. I mean, I had people, you know,
- 8:25that I went to school with, people that I played ball
- 8:27against. All reaching out to me and
- 8:30congratulating me and seeing they've seen it everywhere and
- 8:33couldn't believe it. And it it's really cool.
- 8:36Oh, that's so neat. And I love that more and more
- 8:40families and individuals are coming out and they're making
- 8:44these movies about people's imperfect life and you know how
- 8:50they got through the mire and and overcome with God's power
- 8:56and strength. And I'm loving seeing these
- 9:00movies more and more these days of just the testimony of where
- 9:06where somebody was and where they are now, all because of the
- 9:11Lord and how much of A testament that is for believers and non
- 9:17believers. So I love how we're rising up as
- 9:20Christians, as believers, to share the good news in that way.
- 9:24And so what's the back story of the phrase I canned?
- 9:30Where did that come from? Yeah, So growing up, my dad
- 9:33always told me to never say the words.
- 9:36I can't. I can't do something.
- 9:38I can't do that, he said. You're gonna find a way to do
- 9:41it. It might just look a little bit
- 9:42different than somebody else. But you can always find a way to
- 9:44accomplish something. And what through Christ, all
- 9:47things are possible. And so the movie I I can and I
- 9:51can phrase came to saying like, I can do this, I can with Christ
- 9:57and never turning back. Through your old ways and are
- 9:59always overcoming that adversity that you're thrown.
- 10:02So cool. Do you feel like, do you have a
- 10:05lot of friends, especially in softball, that come to you for
- 10:10mentoring? I've always been told, you know,
- 10:13I'm not. I guess on the field I wasn't
- 10:15very a vocal leader. I was more of actions.
- 10:20I was showing people through my actions, you know, and so I
- 10:25think that. They've always told me that
- 10:27whenever I play, they can really see it.
- 10:29That's right. And it's the actions that speak
- 10:32louder than the words, right? People are looking at your
- 10:35example and what you're displaying and that speaks way
- 10:39volumes than anything else. And good for you.
- 10:43That's so cool. So what is your favorite part of
- 10:47softball? That's a good question.
- 10:52I would say my favorite part of softball.
- 10:54One is knowing that it's a team sport and it's not
- 10:59individualized cause for a long time I used to really, I used to
- 11:04think of a lot about myself and not putting my team first.
- 11:09And then once I realized that, I put my team first and that I got
- 11:13all these talents and gifts. Not from what I did, but what
- 11:17God gave me really helped me as a player just to display that,
- 11:22like like you said, my actions. I was trying to show people
- 11:25Christ through how I played on the field.
- 11:27Yeah, so cool. I love that answer.
- 11:30You know, it's not about the actual playing the sport, but
- 11:33it's the eternal meaning. So did you play any other sports
- 11:36or was it just softball? I played a lot of different
- 11:40sports. I grew up playing basketball,
- 11:42volleyball, flag football, Ran cross country, but that didn't
- 11:45last long. But my two my 2 main sports in
- 11:48high school was basketball, softball.
- 11:50Basketball was more just to stay in shape and have fun for
- 11:54softball season. Now do you get asked if you're
- 11:57friends with Bethany Hamilton? Oh, all the time.
- 12:00And then when people, they compare my movie and they're
- 12:03like, oh, you're like that surfer, aren't you?
- 12:08Yeah, you're like, well, I'm Caitlin and I have my own story,
- 12:12right? I don't know.
- 12:15Have you tried surfing or do you want to?
- 12:17I want to. That's on the bucket list.
- 12:19Yeah, very cool. I love it.
- 12:22So what is the main message you hope people get out of this
- 12:27movie? Well, there's a really a big
- 12:30message behind this movie and in the beginning.
- 12:34It's God doesn't make mistakes. And my grandma was the one that
- 12:38told my parents, you know, when I was born and they first saw me
- 12:41with one arm. You know, God doesn't make
- 12:43mistakes, and he has a plan for everything.
- 12:46You might not know what it is, but in the end you'll find out.
- 12:48And she always told my parents and I to trust in God and trust
- 12:53what what he had for us. And So what I want to tell
- 12:56everybody is, you know, God doesn't make mistakes, no matter
- 12:58what you look like, no matter where you came from.
- 13:01He has a plan and a purpose for you and for your life, and all
- 13:05you have to do is lean on him and he'll get you through it.
- 13:08I love it. Amen to that.
- 13:10Now, I read somewhere that you were in an injury.
- 13:14Is that correct? Right before you're going to get
- 13:17your scholarship. Yes.
- 13:19So could you share that with us? Yes, So my freshman year of
- 13:24college, right? Whenever I got there.
- 13:26You know, I signed a full ride scholarship to get to college.
- 13:28That was on my bucket list and I crossed it off and it was a
- 13:31scrimmage game, so it was not even an actual collegiate game.
- 13:35It was our scrimmage game right before our first college game.
- 13:38And a few of us freshmen were doing really well in the fall
- 13:41and our coach said that we deserve an at bat.
- 13:44So it was my turn and I got up there and I hit it right to the
- 13:47shortstop and everything I do is 100%.
- 13:50And then I was like, well, my goal is I'm going to beat it out
- 13:52at first base. So I was.
- 13:55Trying to beat it out at first base and I kind of lunged and my
- 13:59left leg hit the top of the bag and my body went forward.
- 14:02But my leg didn't go with me and all I heard was pop, pop, pop,
- 14:05pop and I fell to the ground. Well my my kneecap was pointed
- 14:10one way and I looked at, looked at it, looked at my coach and he
- 14:13helped me up and I said, man, that was an awful hit.
- 14:16Can I can I have a redo? And he said, well, if you can
- 14:19walk from here to home, you can. And I took one step and I fell
- 14:23again. Welcome to find out.
- 14:25I tore my ACLI, tore my meniscus, and I sprang all the
- 14:29other ligaments around my knee. And so I was out for the entire
- 14:33season. And that was a point in my life
- 14:36where I really started questioning God.
- 14:39And I questioned him why, You know, why do bad things happen
- 14:42to good people? You know I worked.
- 14:44It's so hard to overcome everybody's negativity, saying I
- 14:47would never make it to college, saying I've never even played
- 14:50the sport and I get here and then I blow up my knee and I
- 14:53can't even play in my first college game.
- 14:55And so that was the one devastating point in my life
- 14:58where, you know, I thought softball was the only thing that
- 15:02was going to get me through. And I was only, I wasn't even
- 15:04leaning on God. I was.
- 15:06So focused on softball that I that I lost sight of.
- 15:08God, wow. So So what was your lesson that
- 15:12you learned and that that you put softball first?
- 15:15Yeah. I was.
- 15:17I was basically idolizing softball and idolizing myself.
- 15:22I was so focused on, like, being the best and wanting to do this
- 15:26that I didn't realize, like, like I mentioned before, that,
- 15:29you know, he's the one that gave me all these talents and all the
- 15:32abilities, and I should be using it to glorify him.
- 15:34And I wasn't. I was just so focused on myself.
- 15:37Wow, amazing to learn that at such a young age.
- 15:41So what are your ambitions and goals today?
- 15:45Well, currently right now I am working with a softball
- 15:49organization called National Fastpitch Coaches Association
- 15:53and we deal with college softball all around the States
- 15:57and we help educate coaches and we help you know inspire them
- 16:00and. Just get them to help grow the
- 16:04game of softball basically. And right now I'm loving it and
- 16:09I hope to stay within softball and one day maybe become a coach
- 16:13that's on the bucket list. Very cool.
- 16:15I love it. Yes, well, you would make
- 16:18amazing coach, that's for sure. And so I read about the I can
- 16:25experience for youth softball league teams and churches.
- 16:29Can you explain more of what the I can experience?
- 16:33Is so the experience is coming out in November and basically
- 16:37teams can get a link and they get a special message from me
- 16:41and they get to see the movie and it comes with like this
- 16:43whole package deal that teams can do together for like a team
- 16:46bonding experience. What a great message and what a
- 16:50great inspirational story you have.
- 16:52Caitlin and I could see why they did this film about your story
- 16:57and your family's story as well. We need to get more and more of
- 17:01these stories out there to encourage other people that God
- 17:07is with them, they're not alone and he will get them through
- 17:11this. So let's end with a take away.
- 17:15What is something that you could leave with the listener to
- 17:18ponder on or take action in? So this whole story, my story,
- 17:22is a redemption story and just to know that you know.
- 17:26Whatever you think your worst sin is, or whatever you think's
- 17:29the worst thing you could ever do, God's a redemptive God, and
- 17:33He loves you for you and he loves you no matter what, and
- 17:36that's why he died. He sent his Son to die on the
- 17:39cross for us. And there's no sin that's
- 17:42greater than another sin. And he loves everybody just the
- 17:45same. I love that.
- 17:48Yes, we serve a God who is a restorer, right?
- 17:51And redeems like you said. Amen to that.
- 17:55Well, thank you, Caitlin, for coming on here.
- 17:58Where is this movie? Just nationwide in various
- 18:02theaters. Yes, it was.
- 18:04It came out September 22nd in various theaters nationwide.
- 18:10We're hoping to stream it. If you want more movie
- 18:13information you can go to icanmovie.info and then it just
- 18:18tells about the movie you know, shows the trailer, and then it
- 18:21gives different locations where the movie was shown and then
- 18:25might be shown and eventually have it be on, I don't know,
- 18:28Amazon or Netflix. And something like that, Yeah.
- 18:32Platform. That would be so cool.
- 18:34I love it. It's gotten good reviews and
- 18:38impactful feedback of how moving it is in people's lives.
- 18:43So it's really done well. So proud of you, Caitlin, and so
- 18:50good to meet you and coming on here and sharing your powerful
- 18:54testimony on here. Thank you.
- 18:56Thank you for having me. Thank you so much for listening
- 19:00today, and I trust that God has encouraged you through this
